Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / The DiCecco Daily: "Unprecedented Situation" Puts Nick Sirianni In Tough Spot
Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Hey, what's going on, everybody?
- 0:10Speaker 2: Welcome in to another episode of DiCecco Daily. It's Andrew DiCecco,
- 0:14Speaker 2: Eagles beat reporter for InsideTheBirds.com. And we have an update
- 0:19Speaker 2: on the scary situation concerning Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts. His agent,
- 0:24Speaker 2: Nicole Lynn, released a statement in conjunction with the Philadelphia Eagles.
- 0:28Speaker 2: It was a joint statement, and it reads, Over the
- 0:33Speaker 2: last few days, Jalen Hurts has received comprehensive medical evaluations
- 0:37Speaker 2: by physician experts. In the interest of transparency, we are
- 0:40Speaker 2: providing additional information on the diagnosis and treatment plan related
- 0:44Speaker 2: to his condition. Jalen was initially diagnosed by specialists in
- 0:48Speaker 2: London with a left calf superficial vein thrombosis. After further
- 0:53Speaker 2: testing and monitoring, the current diagnosis is a deep vein thrombosis,
- 0:59Speaker 2: as well as bilateral pulmonary emboli. He is clinically stable
- 1:05Speaker 2: and has no significant functional limitations. His treatment should only
- 1:09Speaker 2: involve anticoagulation, i.e.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Blood thinners.
- 1:13Speaker 2: During this time, he will not be allowed to participate
- 1:16Speaker 2: in any contact activities, including football. Jalen's prognosis is very good,
- 1:21Speaker 2: and we expect a full recovery. We anticipate that he
- 1:25Speaker 2: will have the opportunity to resume contact football activities when
- 1:28Speaker 2: off the blood thinners. In the meantime... He will remain
- 1:32Speaker 2: active around the team and continue to condition. More importantly,
- 1:36Speaker 2: we anticipate that he will have no long-term effects. We
- 1:40Speaker 2: are thinking of Jalen and looking forward to a strong recovery.
- 1:44Speaker 2: And that was a statement on the health status of
- 1:47Speaker 2: Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts from the Philadelphia Eagles and Jalen
- 1:49Speaker 2: Hurts' agent, Nicole Lynn.
- 1:52Speaker 1: So clearly a really scary.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Situation that's continuing to develop, and we're gathering more information.
- 1:58Speaker 2: I know Jeff and Adam did a podcast on it
- 2:01Speaker 2: earlier today, so I'm not going to pile on and
- 2:05Speaker 2: discuss it a whole lot further.
- 2:07Speaker 1: But the priority here is Jalen Hurts the person.
- 2:10Speaker 2: This is not a football situation. This is a life situation.
- 2:14Speaker 2: And what you're hoping right now is that Jalen is, one,
- 2:18Speaker 2: in good spirits and is able to continue to persevere
- 2:21Speaker 2: through this. And the most important thing is the note
- 2:26Speaker 2: here that says we anticipate that he will have no
- 2:29Speaker 2: long-term effects.
- 2:31Speaker 1: So that is certainly encouraging.
- 2:33Speaker 2: And if you've been keeping an eye on social media,
- 2:36Speaker 2: there seemingly are reports coming out throughout the day. This
- 2:40Speaker 2: is the biggest story in sports right now, quite frankly,
- 2:44Speaker 2: and rightfully so it's, it's an unprecedented situation. And again,
- 2:49Speaker 2: You heard from Nick Sirianni today, and Nick Sirianni was
- 2:54Speaker 2: really clear, I guess, and I should say he was very.
- 3:00Speaker 2: He went with the same line that you would expect,
- 3:04Speaker 2: and he mentioned that he's not a medical expert. He
- 3:07Speaker 2: talked about supporting the medical team there and.
- 3:13Speaker 2: He said the health of our players is always at
- 3:14Speaker 2: the forefront of our minds, and we leave that up
- 3:16Speaker 2: to the medical experts, but we always, always care deeply
- 3:19Speaker 2: about our players. And then he talked about completely focused
- 3:23Speaker 2: on together and connection.
- 3:25Speaker 1: So that was kind of a prevailing theme from Nick.
- 3:27Speaker 2: He didn't offer much in terms of adding some more
- 3:33Speaker 2: clarity and information to the forefront, and that's where things
- 3:39Speaker 2: stand right now. But I want to get to a
- 3:45Speaker 2: football-related topic as we segue because Nick Sirianni was asked
- 3:50Speaker 2: whether or not Sean Mannion is still calling plays going forward,
- 3:55Speaker 2: and Nick Sirianni said yes. Now, it's important to remember
- 3:58Speaker 2: that after the game, Nick Sirianni said that everything's on
- 4:01Speaker 2: the table and what could be different there. Now, I
- 4:08Speaker 2: and he said not going to get too much into that. Obviously,
- 4:12Speaker 2: we're looking at everything. And there are conversations that I've
- 4:15Speaker 2: had with the staff this whole morning and everything's on
- 4:17Speaker 2: the table.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Oh, but we've done this. Yeah. Well, maybe this isn't
- 4:20Speaker 1: working quite as good.
- 4:21Speaker 4: All right.
- 4:21Speaker 1: So this is on the table without getting too much
- 4:23Speaker 1: in the scheme.
- 4:24Speaker 2: I'm saying to you, obviously, it hasn't looked the way
- 4:26Speaker 2: we wanted it to look and we're not scoring enough points.
- 4:28Speaker 2: So everything is on the table again. I'll do everything
- 4:31Speaker 2: we can do. Our coaches will do everything we can do.
- 4:35Speaker 2: to help us win football games. If I said, hey,
- 4:37Speaker 2: this is all on the table, but this isn't, everything's
- 4:40Speaker 2: on the table. As far as who's coaching the positions
- 4:43Speaker 2: and who's calling the plays, that will remain the same.
- 4:46Speaker 2: We're looking for answers and we're looking for solutions. Nick
- 4:49Speaker 2: Sirianni has often said that he's not looking to assign blame.
- 4:52Speaker 1: He's trying to find solutions.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Well, we're entering week seven and there don't appear to
- 4:56Speaker 2: be any clear cut solutions here for the offense. And
- 5:00Speaker 2: I want to reemphasize something that I said on the
- 5:04Speaker 2: postgame podcast, and that is the alarming rate of three
- 5:08Speaker 2: and outs and how they have not been able to
- 5:10Speaker 2: yet rectify that at this stage of the season. And
- 5:14Speaker 2: what you're seeing is a defense, which I believe is
- 5:18Speaker 2: elite or damn near close to being elite.
- 5:21Speaker 1: And they're now being put out there.
- 5:23Speaker 2: For 70 plus snaps, 78 snaps against the Carolina Panthers.
- 5:28Speaker 2: And really with the exception of week two against the
- 5:31Speaker 2: Tennessee Titans, the defense has been out there for 70
- 5:35Speaker 2: plus snaps, which is not sustainable.
- 5:38Speaker 1: And it doesn't matter how much.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Uh, of a star-studded cashier fielding, how good of a
- 5:44Speaker 2: coordinator Vic Fangio is, naturally, when you're out there as
- 5:48Speaker 2: long as you are, the dam will eventually break. And
- 5:51Speaker 2: I think that what you're seeing is they come out
- 5:54Speaker 2: fairly strong early in games, they're getting off the field,
- 5:57Speaker 2: they're getting the football back to their offense, and their
- 6:00Speaker 2: offense is sputtering, and they're putting the defense right back
- 6:04Speaker 2: on the field. And then later in the games is
- 6:06Speaker 2: where you see them most susceptible to And then all
- 6:08Speaker 2: of a sudden, the strongest point of your team is
- 6:12Speaker 2: now leaky, and you're not seeing complementary football. So not
- 6:16Speaker 2: only is the offense hurting itself, they're now starting to affect, well,
- 6:20Speaker 2: not starting, they have affected this defense. And, I mean,
- 6:25Speaker 2: I don't know how much longer that can continue before
- 6:28Speaker 2: you start to see a.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Clear drop-off in play. Fatigue will set in.
- 6:35Speaker 2: And when fatigue sets in, that's where details and fundamentals
- 6:39Speaker 2: tend to waver a little bit, and that's not something
- 6:42Speaker 2: that happens– I mean that just comes with it.
- 6:46Speaker 1: That comes with the territory.
- 6:48Speaker 2: That's not something you plan for, but fatigue, that's a
- 6:51Speaker 2: byproduct of that, and now all of a sudden you're
- 6:54Speaker 2: seeing– leaks on on all levels there and so what
- 6:58Speaker 2: can they do offensively to make changes well maybe maybe
- 7:02Speaker 2: one of the solutions could be having Sean Mannion call
- 7:05Speaker 2: plays from the sideline he's been calling plays from the
- 7:08Speaker 2: coach's box maybe that changes and.
- 7:11Speaker 1: That would be sort of a a move on the
- 7:14Speaker 1: smaller scale to see if that impacts things in any
- 7:17Speaker 1: meaningful way but.
- 7:20Speaker 2: I think that you may eventually see a more collaborative
- 7:23Speaker 2: approach if the offense doesn't get rectified or at least
- 7:27Speaker 2: improve even marginally. You haven't seen the steps taken in
- 7:32Speaker 2: a positive direction. It's mostly either flatlined or you've seen
- 7:36Speaker 2: regression in many regards. And I look back to the
- 7:39Speaker 2: protection schemes and they're having difficulty blocking up the zero
- 7:44Speaker 2: blitzes and a lot of the pressure that teams are
- 7:47Speaker 2: throwing at the Eagles. And I think when you look
- 7:49Speaker 2: at that, that doesn't necessarily solely fall on the shoulders
- 7:52Speaker 2: of the offensive coordinator. Chris Cooper, the offensive line coach,
- 7:57Speaker 2: he needs to be able to adjust on the fly
- 7:59Speaker 2: as well and make the most of the personnel that
- 8:01Speaker 2: he's working with. Because what I've noticed from the players
- 8:04Speaker 2: who are out there, a lot of times, Willie Lampkin,
- 8:08Speaker 2: Markel Bell, Jake Majors over the last two weeks, they've
- 8:12Speaker 2: handled their individual responsibilities.
- 8:15Speaker 1: I look at the.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Blocking scheme and some of the lack of answers that
- 8:19Speaker 2: they have in terms of just handling pressure as being
- 8:22Speaker 2: a prevailing theme that that in and of itself should
- 8:25Speaker 2: be able to head things in the right direction.
- 8:27Speaker 1: If you can do that.

- 11:40Speaker 3: about them, let them know it was inside the birds.
- 11:42Speaker 4: It's the best way to support the show.
- 11:44Speaker 1: But the under-center play action.
- 11:46Speaker 2: While I said on the post-game show that I thought
- 11:50Speaker 2: that you would like to see the Eagles tap into
- 11:52Speaker 2: that a little bit more, I think they did it
- 11:53Speaker 2: maybe a half dozen times. And it wasn't successful. It
- 11:56Speaker 2: is slow developing. They're not able to block it up well,
- 11:59Speaker 2: and Tanner McKee, I think, was sacked once or twice
- 12:01Speaker 2: on those. But that doesn't mean that you can't execute
- 12:05Speaker 2: it better. If that is a hallmark of your offense
- 12:07Speaker 2: or expected to be a hallmark of your offense, you
- 12:10Speaker 2: have to find a way to execute it better and
- 12:13Speaker 2: not simply say, well, we're not doing it well, so
- 12:15Speaker 2: we're going to scrap that. If you have conviction in
- 12:19Speaker 2: your scheme, which is something that Nick Sirianni mentioned time
- 12:23Speaker 2: and time again about Sean Manning, that he has a
- 12:25Speaker 2: lot of conviction, then you're Stay with it and work
- 12:29Speaker 2: through those challenges. I understand that you don't have the personnel,
- 12:32Speaker 2: and there's always so many ways you can go with
- 12:35Speaker 2: this thing, but you owe it to yourself. This is
- 12:37Speaker 2: Sean Mannion's crack at being an offensive coordinator. You want
- 12:41Speaker 2: to make sure that you're leaving no stone unturned and
- 12:44Speaker 2: giving yourself the best opportunity to be successful. Now, what
- 12:48Speaker 2: can you do to acquiesce to Tanner McKee and tailor
- 12:51Speaker 2: it around his strengths? Because the reality of the situation is,
- 12:56Speaker 2: And I think the report said that, that Jalen Hurts
- 12:58Speaker 2: is done for the year. So Tanner McKee is going
- 13:01Speaker 2: to be your guy. So find out what he does well,
- 13:05Speaker 2: what he's comfortable with, and really lean into that. That
- 13:08Speaker 2: is your best chance of trying to capitalize or maximize
- 13:12Speaker 2: the opportunity in front of you, which is a lackluster
- 13:15Speaker 2: NFC East, if we're being frank.
- 13:17Speaker 1: So the season is not over. However.
- 13:21Speaker 2: If they come out Monday night against the Dallas Cowboys
- 13:23Speaker 2: and they fall on their face or they come out
- 13:25Speaker 2: flat or they're not able to answer the bell at home,
- 13:29Speaker 2: that's where you start to question whether or not things
- 13:32Speaker 2: spiral and whether or not it.
- 13:33Speaker 1: Is a lost season.
- 13:35Speaker 2: So right now, it may look bleak, and it certainly does,
- 13:38Speaker 2: and it doesn't seem like there's a lot of answers
- 13:41Speaker 2: or reinforcements coming because... If you haven't seen it through
- 13:44Speaker 2: the first six weeks, what leads you to believe that
- 13:47Speaker 2: there will be in week seven, week eight and there on?
- 13:50Speaker 2: I mean, all I can tell you is this is
- 13:52Speaker 2: a really critical part of the stretch. This will determine
- 13:55Speaker 2: the Eagles season, the NFC East, and they're still alive.
- 13:58Speaker 1: So.
- 14:00Speaker 2: You need to make some drastic changes, and I think
- 14:02Speaker 2: right now the running game isn't working.
- 14:05Speaker 1: What I liked yesterday.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Is that they leaned into the screen game a little
- 14:08Speaker 2: bit more, which is an extension of that. You can't
- 14:10Speaker 2: just say, we can't run, so we're not going to.
- 14:13Speaker 2: You have to find creative ways to try to offset that.
- 14:19Speaker 2: create it, manufacture it on your own, in your own way.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Andy Reid did a lot of that with the screen passes,
- 14:24Speaker 2: if you remember, with Brian Westbrook and Deuce Daly and
- 14:27Speaker 2: Correll Buckhalter. And it's not traditional, but it is something
- 14:31Speaker 2: that have traditionally been mainstays in a West Coast offense.
- 14:35Speaker 1: So of that game that we just saw.
- 14:38Speaker 2: On Sunday, some of the things that I like was
- 14:40Speaker 2: that they were able to get the ball out to
- 14:42Speaker 2: the running backs in the flats. And that is sort
- 14:46Speaker 2: of an extension of the running game.
- 14:49Speaker 1: But maybe work in Jaden Blue a little bit. He's explosive.
- 14:54Speaker 2: He gives you a different dimension as a running back.
- 14:56Speaker 1: I understand he's new. But you know what you have
- 14:58Speaker 1: in Damian Pierce.
- 14:59Speaker 2: He's more of a plotter. He's a downhill runner. But
- 15:03Speaker 2: you've got to try to find a way to kickstart things.
- 15:05Speaker 2: And I was asked on 97.5 The Fanatic whether or
- 15:08Speaker 2: not I believe– That the offensive line will improve at
- 15:12Speaker 2: any point this season. And I said, well, right now
- 15:14Speaker 2: their in-house options are limited. The best chance that the
- 15:16Speaker 2: Eagles can hope for is that Landon Dickerson has a
- 15:18Speaker 2: great week of practice.
- 15:20Speaker 1: They feel comfortable where he is from a health perspective.
- 15:23Speaker 1: You put him in there at left guard.
- 15:25Speaker 2: That gives you a muller that can help move bodies
- 15:28Speaker 2: in the run game. Drew Kendall, who was active as
- 15:32Speaker 2: the eighth lineman, didn't play, and that was more of
- 15:35Speaker 2: an emergency case where you don't want to go into
- 15:38Speaker 2: a game with seven offensive linemen. That was a break
- 15:40Speaker 2: glass in case of emergency situation.
- 15:43Speaker 1: But maybe after another week.
- 15:44Speaker 2: Of mending from the knee injury, he's able to step in,
- 15:47Speaker 2: and then all of a sudden you have a different
- 15:49Speaker 2: left guard and a different center. So I'm trying to
- 15:51Speaker 2: present all of the alternatives here, all of the options
- 15:55Speaker 2: or the reasons why the offense could play improve somewhat.
- 15:59Speaker 2: And I'm not, and look, I'm not going to sit
- 16:01Speaker 2: here and tell you that these changes are going to
- 16:03Speaker 2: be drastic and that you're all of a sudden, you're
- 16:05Speaker 2: going to see them score 28 points a game. But
- 16:08Speaker 2: if you're talking about trying to kickstart things and get
- 16:10Speaker 2: this run game going, protect a little bit better. All
- 16:14Speaker 2: I can tell you is that you have Landon Dickerson
- 16:17Speaker 2: who had his 21 day practice window opened.
- 16:21Speaker 3: Nobody loves grilling more than me. It could be 30
- 16:23Speaker 3: degrees and I'll be out there grilling burgers and steaks
- 16:26Speaker 3: and But the one thing that I really can't stand
- 16:29Speaker 3: is losing my fish and my veggies because they just
- 16:32Speaker 3: can't grill without falling through. That's why I've been using
- 16:35Speaker 3: Hexclad's BBQ Collection. It's bringing hybrid technology outdoors with products
- 16:41Speaker 3: specifically designed to make grilling easier, especially when you're cooking
- 16:45Speaker 3: foods that normally.
- 16:46Speaker 4: Don't cooperate on a traditional grill.
- 16:49Speaker 3: The Hexclad BBQ Grill Plan combines the searing power of
- 16:52Speaker 3: stainless steel, durability of cast iron, and.
- 16:56Speaker 4: the convenience of nonstick.
- 16:57Speaker 3: All in one versatile grill pan. They've also launched their
- 17:00Speaker 3: new BBQ Grill Topper. That gives you even more control
- 17:03Speaker 3: when you're cooking delicate foods like veggies or seafood, or
- 17:07Speaker 3: if you're cooking multiple portions.
- 17:09Speaker 4: At one time.
- 17:09Speaker 3: Last week, I grilled the best surf and turf my style,
- 17:13Speaker 3: which is salmon and ribs, and lost none of it
- 17:16Speaker 3: because I used Hexclad's BBQ Collection.
- 17:20Speaker 4: With over 1 million customers and.
- 17:21Speaker 3: More than 50,000 five-star reviews, It's clear people love cooking
- 17:26Speaker 3: with Hexclad. There's a reason Gordon Ramsay uses Hexclad at

- 18:57Speaker 3: made for Philly fans 21 and up.
- 19:00Speaker 1: And you have Drew Kendall, who.
- 19:04Speaker 2: I saw him working out pregame, and he clearly wasn't
- 19:07Speaker 2: moving very well with the knee. But maybe after another
- 19:10Speaker 2: week of recovery, rehab, practice, he's able to give it
- 19:14Speaker 2: a go. But they have to find things that they're
- 19:16Speaker 2: good at and lean into that. And you've got to
- 19:19Speaker 2: get more of the quick game going. I think Tanner
- 19:21Speaker 2: McKee is a quarterback that should theoretically thrive with the
- 19:25Speaker 2: quick game. Not only does he get the ball out
- 19:27Speaker 2: of his hands faster, but it also limits the amount
- 19:30Speaker 2: of time that you're leaving the offensive linemen out there
- 19:32Speaker 2: to handle their assignments, and you're giving... the offense or
- 19:38Speaker 2: the drive, a fighting chance of being successful. So I
- 19:42Speaker 2: don't think you need to complicate it. I think you
- 19:44Speaker 2: need to go back to the basics and figure out
- 19:46Speaker 2: what works for this group of players that you're working with.
- 19:49Speaker 2: And Sean Mannion, just needs to try to continue to
- 19:55Speaker 2: implement his scheme and not move too far away because
- 19:58Speaker 2: I honestly don't know what this offense is right now.
- 20:01Speaker 2: I've said that many times before. They don't seem to
- 20:04Speaker 2: quite know. They're searching for their identity. Well, now would
- 20:07Speaker 2: be a good time to get with Tanner McKee this week.
- 20:10Speaker 2: He'll have a full week of practice with the ones,
- 20:17Speaker 2: excuse me, Something got caught in my throat there, and
- 20:21Speaker 2: that should be able to help him become more prepared
- 20:24Speaker 2: for this Monday night matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.
- 20:27Speaker 1: So that's where things stand right now.
- 20:30Speaker 2: Nick Sirianni was clear that Sean Mannion is still calling plays,
- 20:36Speaker 2: and I would expect that to be the case, but
- 20:39Speaker 2: the season can quickly unravel depending on how this upcoming
- 20:42Speaker 2: stretch against the NFC East goes, and he said everything's
- 20:46Speaker 2: on the table, so we'll see how Things transpire in
- 20:49Speaker 2: what should be a really interesting week there at the
- 20:51Speaker 2: Jefferson Health Training Complex. That's going to do it for
- 20:53Speaker 2: this episode of the Checo Daily. I'm Andrew DiCecco, and
- 20:56Speaker 2: I'll catch you all on the next one.
