- 0:12Speaker 1: This is the Wheel of Time Spoilers podcast. It's fine,
- 0:23Speaker 1: I guess these chapters. That's how I feel about these chapters.
- 0:26Speaker 1: They're fine.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Yeah, they're fine, I guess. I. On rereading Matt's letter chapter,
- 0:30Speaker 2: I find it less egregious than I do in my
- 0:33Speaker 2: memory for a couple of reasons that I'll point out
- 0:35Speaker 2: when I get there. Most notably, he says, yeah, this
- 0:39Speaker 2: is a rough draft that I just decided to send anyway,
- 0:41Speaker 2: and it's like I was going to rewrite this, like
- 0:42Speaker 2: and when he's writing a rough draft, I can see where, oh,
- 0:45Speaker 2: there's a couple of misspellings as crossed that words like
- 0:47Speaker 2: of course, like if you're writing a rough draft, you're
- 0:49Speaker 2: going to cross stuff out and use a different word, right.
- 0:52Speaker 1: That is why it's called a rough drafts because you
- 0:54Speaker 1: don't have to make it perfect. You can just allow
- 0:56Speaker 1: the mistakes to stand and it's okay.
- 0:59Speaker 2: I mean, then you can my that with just like
- 1:02Speaker 2: the number of emails I've written to then delete and
- 1:05Speaker 2: the things I've said to them. But I feel like
- 1:07Speaker 2: this is one of those situations where it's like, Matt,
- 1:08Speaker 2: you should have deleted this one and rewritten it like better,
- 1:12Speaker 2: and like taking that into account, I can I can
- 1:14Speaker 2: forgive some of the crudeness that's in there.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, like I said last time, I love the
- 1:20Speaker 1: sibling bickering energy that gets translated through the letter, So
- 1:24Speaker 1: I'm willing to forgive the letter's actual awkwardness because of
- 1:27Speaker 1: how Elaine and Matt interact with each other via that
- 1:30Speaker 1: letter as an icebreaker. So but uh, before we get
- 1:34Speaker 1: to that, we have to do this this Parent chapter,
- 1:37Speaker 1: which is like maybe a little bit less than fine.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Honestly, it's I have a few things to say about it,
- 1:45Speaker 2: but not a lot. Actually, there's a few background things
- 1:49Speaker 2: that I think are interesting in this chapter, but I
- 1:51Speaker 2: really don't find the main plot to be. I mean,
- 1:53Speaker 2: Parent meets with Galled and they both kind of go yep,
- 1:56Speaker 2: we're gonna fight, and like Gold never says his name,
- 2:00Speaker 2: which is just dumb. He says, I'm the Lord Captain commander,
- 2:03Speaker 2: Like what why would he not say his formal title
- 2:06Speaker 2: and his full name? Like that seems just common sense.
- 2:09Speaker 2: It feels manufactured that that pairing doesn't find out in
- 2:12Speaker 2: this moment that gall It is the Lord Captain commander.
- 2:15Speaker 2: And I think that's what frustrates me about this chapter.
- 2:17Speaker 1: That's what frustrates me hugely about their entire dynamic is
- 2:21Speaker 1: that so much would have been resolved if Galott had
- 2:23Speaker 1: just ever introduced himself by name, which seems like a
- 2:27Speaker 1: perfectly ordinary thing to do, and the fact that that
- 2:30Speaker 1: is what so much of this like, will they won't
- 2:33Speaker 1: they plot hangs on just I hate will they won't
- 2:36Speaker 1: they anytime that that's used as a narrative, plot forwarding,
- 2:41Speaker 1: quote unquote, or plot stalling device. It just I hate
- 2:45Speaker 1: it as a trope. I hate it as a mechanic.
- 2:47Speaker 1: And this feels like so manufactured and ham fisted, even
- 2:51Speaker 1: within the context of that trope that it's I sprained
- 2:55Speaker 1: my eyes rolling my eyeballs when I was reading this chapter.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Yes, yes, I don't think I want to do a
- 3:01Speaker 2: read in on this. I don't find the I I'd.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Rather Yeah, the only thing I think we need from
- 3:07Speaker 1: this reading is to point out these two interesting two
- 3:10Speaker 1: Rivers names that never come up again, because those are
- 3:12Speaker 1: probably fan inserts.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Because oh, okay, good call, we've.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Never heard of montem Alsan and asi Alphone. I don't
- 3:19Speaker 1: think those are names we've ever seen before or since,
- 3:22Speaker 1: so I'm pretty sure those are some more hat tips
- 3:25Speaker 1: to batter reads.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Let's see, I didn't actually look those two people up.
- 3:31Speaker 1: And then the only other interesting part about the area
- 3:33Speaker 1: that would be a read in is just that they
- 3:36Speaker 1: have recently camped near the statue that Ninive comes to
- 3:41Speaker 1: get Tam at, right, Like this is one of those
- 3:43Speaker 1: location stamps of like it's the statue with stabbing the
- 3:46Speaker 1: ground with the sword, and you know, we know that
- 3:49Speaker 1: when Ninive comes to get Tam that's significantly after this,
- 3:53Speaker 1: but like they have just arrived at that statue. So
- 3:56Speaker 1: for what it's worth in trying to organize the timelines,
- 3:59Speaker 1: that's how helpful.
- 4:00Speaker 2: But yeah, this is before Tam quite a bit, right.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean because Tam leaves on the eve of
- 4:07Speaker 1: the trial, right from the eve of the battle, right,
- 4:10Speaker 1: And Parrott is like, you have to leave now, like
- 4:14Speaker 1: right now, and Tam says, yeah, I'm real sorry, Bud,
- 4:17Speaker 1: but like I have to go right now. And that's
- 4:18Speaker 1: after all of this Parent and Galt stuff has gone
- 4:21Speaker 1: back and forth and back and forth and back and forth.
- 4:23Speaker 1: That's when Tam leaves, and they have only just now
- 4:26Speaker 1: this day in the plot arrived. So for what it's worth,
- 4:30Speaker 1: we can locate ourselves on the timeline in that way.
- 4:33Speaker 2: So, and just to reference those two names. In two
- 4:35Speaker 2: thousand and eight, Anthony AZ's won a drawing grand prize
- 4:39Speaker 2: hosted by tarvalont Net to get his name in the
- 4:42Speaker 2: Tower of Midnight, So that's where this comes from. And
- 4:45Speaker 2: mantam Alson is named for Sean Montgomery, a fan of
- 4:49Speaker 2: the Wheel of Time. So I'm not sure how he
- 4:50Speaker 2: got his name in there, but they are both fan inserts.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Yes, nice, Yeah, that's the game we're playing now, that
- 4:57Speaker 1: is the game we're playing now. It was spot the
- 4:59Speaker 1: fan insert So yeah, that's all I had for the
- 5:02Speaker 1: entire read in section was like fan in certain names.
- 5:05Speaker 1: And they have just arrived at the statue, which we
- 5:07Speaker 1: know they will be camped at up to tamp getting
- 5:10Speaker 1: taken away.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Yeah. I've got to mention that some of the two
- 5:13Speaker 2: of her men are eyeing him sideways because they still
- 5:15Speaker 2: think he cheated on if I deal with Berylane. They
- 5:17Speaker 2: haven't dealt with that yet.
- 5:20Speaker 1: I roll number one. I roll number one, And we
- 5:22Speaker 1: should mentioned this is the chapter called after the Taint, right,
- 5:25Speaker 1: because paren and Grady have that discussion about I used
- 5:29Speaker 1: to not have anything to live for because of the
- 5:32Speaker 1: tant and now that the taint is gone, Aschaman has
- 5:35Speaker 1: something to live for. And that's an important like gestalt
- 5:37Speaker 1: shift in their entire worldview.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Which you know, that's the thing that Rand. It's kind
- 5:42Speaker 2: of weird because he picks that up before Rand sends
- 5:44Speaker 2: the message that you're not weapons your men, right, because
- 5:47Speaker 2: that's kind of saying the same thing.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Well, yeah, because it's kind of a universal observation. You
- 5:51Speaker 1: don't need Rand to tell you that. It's sort of
- 5:53Speaker 1: a natural law.
- 5:55Speaker 2: But that's what Godswayne had to teach them, right.
- 6:00Speaker 1: I truly don't think that Katswain was necessary because this
- 6:04Speaker 1: man came to that conclusion entirely. Sands Katswain, you know,
- 6:08Speaker 1: the simplest the dragons fan because again, obviously.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Parents first thought was so and so they're dealing with
- 6:14Speaker 2: the fact that the white Cloaks took the travel and
- 6:17Speaker 2: the people who were traveling with supplies.
- 6:19Speaker 1: And the grain from so Harbor. Like Cassanderson's like, remember
- 6:22Speaker 1: so Harbor, Remember So that's right, Yeah, the white Cloaks
- 6:25Speaker 1: took that grain, the weavil grain.
- 6:28Speaker 2: And so his first thought is like what do I
- 6:30Speaker 2: what I did last time I came into the White Cloaks,
- 6:32Speaker 2: I snuck in and freed the prisoners and snuck back
- 6:34Speaker 2: out again, and that worked pretty well. So he's like,
- 6:36Speaker 2: can we sneak in a freedom and they're like, uh,
- 6:39Speaker 2: grades like, you know, I don't really see why we
- 6:41Speaker 2: would sneak. I could just kill them. They don't have
- 6:45Speaker 2: channel alerts. They're worthless as fighting a fighting force. And
- 6:48Speaker 2: I love I just like I love that whole sentiment
- 6:52Speaker 2: where Gray's like, they don't have anyone who can channel
- 6:54Speaker 2: the one power. Grady shrugged, hands clasped behind his back
- 6:57Speaker 2: as he walked with his black coat, the pin and
- 6:59Speaker 2: the increasingly soldier like attitude. He was looking less and
- 7:02Speaker 2: less like a farmer. Neil is feeling better. He and
- 7:04Speaker 2: I could pound those children down until they give us
- 7:07Speaker 2: what we want, and it's just like yeah, like ye,
- 7:10Speaker 2: just the two of them are a force that outstrips
- 7:12Speaker 2: the White Cloaks. They're so useless.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, Paren's like, oh my god, complicated, complicated, complicated.
- 7:19Speaker 1: They're like parent, parent, parent. The level of Mountain versus
- 7:23Speaker 1: Mole Hill right now is ridiculous. Any One of these
- 7:27Speaker 1: channelers could probably take out the entire White cloak army,
- 7:30Speaker 1: any two of us, it's going to be a walk
- 7:32Speaker 1: in the park. Don't make this complicated. This is not
- 7:35Speaker 1: one hundred thousand shidow. This is like three thousand dickwads
- 7:39Speaker 1: on horses.
- 7:40Speaker 2: Right without channelers. And you just figured out circles. So
- 7:44Speaker 2: you know you have male channelers who can now pound
- 7:47Speaker 2: them with an incredible amount of force with a lot
- 7:49Speaker 2: of support in a circle.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Well they're going to figure out circles in about thirty seconds. Yeah, yeah,
- 7:55Speaker 1: but yeah, it's just paren is so determined to make
- 7:58Speaker 1: this complicated because his ad. It's in a way him
- 8:01Speaker 1: and Galad are so well matched because they just insist
- 8:04Speaker 1: on making everything so much more complicated than it.
- 8:08Speaker 2: He realizes that this is basically the same group of
- 8:10Speaker 2: white cloaks he dealt with before in the Two Rivers
- 8:12Speaker 2: that he kicked out, because it's got born hauled.
- 8:15Speaker 1: He hasn't thought at the beginning that like maybe they're
- 8:17Speaker 1: going to like be able to sneak by and like
- 8:19Speaker 1: maybe they won't know who we are. Maybe we can
- 8:21Speaker 1: hide that. And then the first white cloak that walks
- 8:23Speaker 1: up is like the one who has the most animous
- 8:25Speaker 1: for him. Okay, we're not going to get to exactly,
- 8:31Speaker 1: so none of none of that subterfuge is going to
- 8:33Speaker 1: help cool.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Does parent have six fingers on his left hand?
- 8:37Speaker 1: I know right well he is from the two rivers
- 8:39Speaker 1: and the cats. There are paradactyls. What the polydactyl god?
- 8:45Speaker 1: Paradactyl polydactyl.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Oh god, that reminds me of a reference Sluggie before.
- 8:55Speaker 2: It's a webcomic, and there's there's a horror theme where
- 8:59Speaker 2: Satan gives birth to a slew of murderous kittens who
- 9:02Speaker 2: eventually sprout bat wings and start attacking from the skies.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Polydactyl ary tactyles. Yes, that's where I'm going, But yeah,
- 9:12Speaker 1: so circles. Another important step in the creating of Malinair
- 9:16Speaker 1: occurs when the male female experimentation into making circles becomes
- 9:22Speaker 1: a thing, and now they're just going to teach it
- 9:23Speaker 1: to everyone else. But like, this is the moment when
- 9:25Speaker 1: they figure it out.
- 9:26Speaker 2: I feel like Sanderson is trying to be like, Okay,
- 9:29Speaker 2: we have all of these things that exist out in
- 9:32Speaker 2: the world that now I need everybody to figure out
- 9:35Speaker 2: all of the same. Like we're doing stepping up power
- 9:37Speaker 2: levels very quickly. A lot of people are learning how
- 9:40Speaker 2: to be soldiers very quickly. A lot of channelers are
- 9:43Speaker 2: learning these weaves that were, you know, kind of scattered,
- 9:47Speaker 2: and how to make how men and women can work together,
- 9:50Speaker 2: and how to make gateways. And there's just a lot
- 9:53Speaker 2: of power scaling happening in this book, kind of in
- 9:56Speaker 2: the background as we He's like, okay, to have the
- 9:59Speaker 2: last we want all of these tools and abilities and
- 10:04Speaker 2: things to be in the last battle, which means all
- 10:06Speaker 2: these people need to have those abilities. So hold on
- 10:09Speaker 2: really quick, let me teach everybody everything.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Yeah, signaritively, there is a critical mass that does make sense,
- 10:15Speaker 1: But it also is like Sanderson got in here and
- 10:17Speaker 1: was like, all right, we're going to turn the pedal
- 10:19Speaker 1: to the medal. Let's go, right, let's go. Sanderson is
- 10:21Speaker 1: in town now, we need to make this happen.
- 10:24Speaker 2: And don't get me wrong, I think power scaling magic
- 10:27Speaker 2: systems is one of Sanderson's best writing abilities, right, Like
- 10:32Speaker 2: he's a great world builder and he's great at power
- 10:35Speaker 2: scaling magic right. I think those are two of the
- 10:37Speaker 2: things he's you know, I think his character work needs work.
- 10:40Speaker 2: I think his plot is often a little simplistic, and
- 10:44Speaker 2: I think his writing is often not as well layered
- 10:47Speaker 2: as it could be. All these means he's very accessible, right,
- 10:50Speaker 2: He's very easy to read. And I know people will
- 10:53Speaker 2: disagree with some of the people love some of his characters,
- 10:56Speaker 2: and I still find them very shallow, even as more
- 10:58Speaker 2: complicated ones.
- 11:00Speaker 1: But and he writes his action well, yeah, no, it's
- 11:03Speaker 1: I love Robert Jordan and his magic system. But Sanderson's
- 11:06Speaker 1: ability to scale and expand a magic system at this
- 11:10Speaker 1: critical juncture in the escalating towards the Last Battle was
- 11:13Speaker 1: really a powerfully constructive wave.
- 11:16Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, yeah, And I'm really love Pavara and Andral.
- 11:22Speaker 2: I just I wish it had been Logaine and one
- 11:25Speaker 2: of the and his like if I just rewrite that
- 11:28Speaker 2: to be like, oh yeah, just have that below gain
- 11:30Speaker 2: because he's a character that exists. It'd be cool to
- 11:32Speaker 2: see him figuring this all out with the Gateways, you know,
- 11:36Speaker 2: but I understand why they didn't. You know. The other
- 11:39Speaker 2: thing Sanderson really likes to do, and you see this
- 11:41Speaker 2: really in The Misborn, the second Misborn trilogy, is he
- 11:43Speaker 2: loves just to min max his characters. He loves to say,
- 11:46Speaker 2: oh what if he's really really really low power? But
- 11:51Speaker 2: he can do this really amazing thing with this one
- 11:53Speaker 2: really amazing thing with gateways, How can I use that
- 11:55Speaker 2: to its full full extent?
- 11:58Speaker 1: Which is fun, it's a good it's a good sandbox
- 12:01Speaker 1: to plan, but it is also you can see it
- 12:03Speaker 1: when it's happening. Something I really like about this exchange
- 12:06Speaker 1: with Paren and Greedy is that Paren does not even
- 12:10Speaker 1: question the concept that the tank could have been cleansed.
- 12:12Speaker 1: He's like, no, that makes sense, seems like something Rand
- 12:15Speaker 1: would do, seems like something this man really believes. Just
- 12:18Speaker 1: kind of feels right, like he doesn't be all stuck
- 12:21Speaker 1: in them at about it like literally everyone else except
- 12:24Speaker 1: for Moraine. It's like Paren and Moraine are the only
- 12:26Speaker 1: ones that are.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Like, oh yeah, that tracks and it's his. And he
- 12:30Speaker 2: does that repeatedly with Rand, where he's like, oh, yeah,
- 12:33Speaker 2: of course you need to break the seals like you have.
- 12:35Speaker 2: You can't have to clear the rubble. That makes sense
- 12:37Speaker 2: to me, right like all of the You can't reford
- 12:40Speaker 2: something that's broken, you have to make a new one,
- 12:41Speaker 2: right like that. He Paren is is super probably the
- 12:45Speaker 2: most supportive of Rand out of anybody in the series.
- 12:49Speaker 1: In general, by a large margin.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Like his whole, this whole quest to go out and
- 12:53Speaker 2: get the profit and come back. He has stuck to
- 12:56Speaker 2: that the whole time. I mean, little diversion to rescue
- 12:58Speaker 2: his wife, but that's understandable, right, But other than that,
- 13:01Speaker 2: he's completely stuck with his quest and up until the
- 13:03Speaker 2: point where you know, and he really he's like, well,
- 13:06Speaker 2: he wanted me to take care of him as a problem,
- 13:08Speaker 2: and I took care of as a problem. If it
- 13:12Speaker 2: was somewhat accidental, he did. He put his followers through
- 13:14Speaker 2: a meat grinder on purpose, so you know, he's and
- 13:17Speaker 2: he's loyal and Matt, Matt's almost loyal by accident, you know.
- 13:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel like Matt is a lot more skeptical
- 13:26Speaker 1: when he gets told about the taint being cleansed, like
- 13:27Speaker 1: he's convinced, but his first reaction does not make sense.
- 13:31Speaker 1: His first reaction is are you insane? Yeah, you're probably insane,
- 13:34Speaker 1: because you know, like he does what everyone else does,
- 13:37Speaker 1: and Paren's just like, I don't I want to say
- 13:39Speaker 1: why that would be false? Seems reasonable, which I mean,
- 13:41Speaker 1: granted Paren has the spidy sense of smell, but still,
- 13:45Speaker 1: I just liked that his inclination is like weeah, Rand
- 13:47Speaker 1: would probably do something like that.
- 13:48Speaker 2: And logically, yeah, I mean, he's the Dragon reborn, He's
- 13:51Speaker 2: this legendary figure. He's probably going to do things no
- 13:53Speaker 2: one else has done, and the tent has to be
- 13:56Speaker 2: cleansed in order to be tainted, right, and you know,
- 13:59Speaker 2: like and just it's it makes sense on a lot
- 14:00Speaker 2: of levels. And I think that's why it's so frustrating,
- 14:02Speaker 2: because you expect everyone to react the way parent does.
- 14:05Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly, Parent's an outlier, but it's what all of
- 14:08Speaker 1: us are feeling as readers who spend so much time
- 14:11Speaker 1: with Rand, being sympathetic to Rand.
- 14:14Speaker 2: So then we get Grady talking about how he wants
- 14:16Speaker 2: to go back to see his family in the Black Tower,
- 14:18Speaker 2: which doesn't that like not be possible because the spike
- 14:23Speaker 2: is there.
- 14:25Speaker 1: I think that's how parent is clued into the fact
- 14:28Speaker 1: that something's wrong at the White Tower, because yeah, this
- 14:30Speaker 1: man who is the Black Tower you very determined to
- 14:33Speaker 1: go see his family. Is like I can't get in parents, like,
- 14:37Speaker 1: oh that that means something's wrong, something has to be
- 14:41Speaker 1: But we have our own problems here, Like I don't
- 14:43Speaker 1: think parents have ever able to do anything about it.
- 14:45Speaker 1: But yeah, I don't do we ever know what happens
- 14:48Speaker 1: to Sora and Gadrin throughout all of the Black Tower Shenanigans.
- 14:52Speaker 2: One would assume they're fine because Gadrin.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Is got ok okine, right right. Yeah, so one assumes
- 14:59Speaker 1: that him and his mom are fine. But I don't
- 15:01Speaker 1: think we ever see them on page or see them
- 15:03Speaker 1: reunite with Grady or anything. That has to just be
- 15:06Speaker 1: a pure speculative headcanon. Yeah.
- 15:08Speaker 2: I don't see any reference to them after this chapter.
- 15:12Speaker 1: But yeah, Gadrin is definitely Geidl Kane because he's ugly
- 15:15Speaker 1: as a stump, young enough to be paired up with
- 15:18Speaker 1: Brigido when she's you know, reborn in like less than
- 15:20Speaker 1: a year. And yeah, it's described as ugly and has
- 15:24Speaker 1: a g name, So you know, one assumes no one
- 15:28Speaker 1: is not assuming.
- 15:29Speaker 2: Also, I believe it's been confirmed by Sanderson in his
- 15:33Speaker 2: Outside the Books.
- 15:34Speaker 1: Oh really really okay, okay, cool, cool, because it feels
- 15:38Speaker 1: a little water tight of a theory for anything else.
- 15:41Speaker 1: But that's a little satisfying to know. Actually.
- 15:44Speaker 2: Yeah. Brandon Sanderson, however, indicated he knows both who Geidle
- 15:47Speaker 2: is and left a clue and Towers of Midnight about
- 15:49Speaker 2: his identity. Wait, In a later interview, he ended that
- 15:52Speaker 2: Gadrin would be too old.
- 15:54Speaker 1: I thought it was Olver. That's too old. Yeah, I
- 15:56Speaker 1: thought it was always Oh it must be Olver, and
- 15:58Speaker 1: it's like no, Oliver significantly too.
- 16:00Speaker 2: He later admitted Grady had multiple children. The new theory
- 16:03Speaker 2: practically confirmed by Sanderson is that Gadriel is another son
- 16:07Speaker 2: of Grady that is either just born or recently conceived. Okay, whatever, whatever, whatever.
- 16:14Speaker 1: God. Sometimes authors are just wrong, need us readers to
- 16:18Speaker 1: tell them that they're wrong.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Yeah, no, you don't. He's he's this is clearly a
- 16:23Speaker 2: g name, ugly like, this is clear. Oh my god,
- 16:26Speaker 2: No it's another son because he's too No, he's not
- 16:27Speaker 2: too old.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Now what have you read?
- 16:30Speaker 2: Okay? Whatever? God. Sometimes Brandon Sanderson needs to shut up
- 16:40Speaker 2: outside of his books. It's also one of my biggest
- 16:42Speaker 2: problems with his own books too. It's like, dude, can
- 16:44Speaker 2: you just let us read the books and interpret them
- 16:47Speaker 2: like raphos shit? More often?
- 16:49Speaker 1: Yeah, this is why I ignore. I don't really follow
- 16:51Speaker 1: authors in general as a as a thing. I follow
- 16:54Speaker 1: very few authors because I just want the finished book.
- 16:56Speaker 1: I don't want all of their thoughts and musings and
- 16:59Speaker 1: whatever else. I just want the finished work. That's it.
- 17:03Speaker 1: Sanderson is just the most epitomous of all of that.
- 17:06Speaker 1: All right, So news of the White Cloaks and their
- 17:09Speaker 1: parley comes rolling in, and Dane bornh Dane bornhold's all
- 17:14Speaker 1: over the situation, as one does, and yeah, invites paren
- 17:18Speaker 1: you know, to go meet with Gallad, saying I would
- 17:22Speaker 1: totally ambush you, but the Lord captain commander has such
- 17:25Speaker 1: a code of honor that you can trust him not
- 17:27Speaker 1: to ambush you, which parent doesn't really believe. But it
- 17:31Speaker 1: is an interesting expression of the dynamic that this guy
- 17:34Speaker 1: is like, I would ambush you. Just to be clear,
- 17:37Speaker 1: I would ambush you. I will not be ambushing you
- 17:39Speaker 1: because I respect my commander who will not be ambushing you.
- 17:42Speaker 2: But yeah, I mean he blames them for killing his father,
- 17:44Speaker 2: so I mean there's definitely like some real animosity there.
- 17:48Speaker 1: Yeah, and I do like that. Galada and parents' parties
- 17:52Speaker 1: are both like, how crazy are you to do this?
- 17:56Speaker 1: You shouldn't do this, This is dangerous, this is foolish.
- 17:58Speaker 1: Like both of their crew who are having the same complaints,
- 18:01Speaker 1: and these two very honorable, very logical men are like, no,
- 18:05Speaker 1: we're gonna do our leader thing. Where we ignore all
- 18:08Speaker 1: of our advisors and do the unadvisable thing, and yet
- 18:11Speaker 1: somehow annoying, they still miss each other in the most
- 18:13Speaker 1: annoying will they won't they ever?
- 18:15Speaker 2: Because again Bornhold never says Lord Captain Commander Madrid have
- 18:20Speaker 2: demondred right? Can damnondred right? Yeah? Just say the name,
- 18:23Speaker 2: say the name.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Like we knew the Lord Captain Commander's name every other
- 18:26Speaker 1: time he walked on stage, every other time he's been
- 18:29Speaker 1: announced by one of his subordinates, he gets his full
- 18:32Speaker 1: title and legal name. This one time for a plot,
- 18:36Speaker 1: it happens to get left out.
- 18:38Speaker 2: And you do you think, well, uh god, what's the
- 18:40Speaker 2: spy master's name who came from the White Cloaks?
- 18:43Speaker 1: Ballwer?
- 18:43Speaker 2: Ballwer? You think Balwer wouldn't immediately suss out who the
- 18:47Speaker 2: Lord Captain Commander is?
- 18:49Speaker 1: Yeah, I just I refuse to believe that Balwar can
- 18:51Speaker 1: be that ub touse when Gallad was a pawn in
- 18:55Speaker 1: his old master's machinations. Like, I just I don't, I
- 18:58Speaker 1: don't buy it.
- 18:59Speaker 2: So he walks in, and of course, you know, the
- 19:01Speaker 2: first thing Galad does is go, oh, you got golden eyes.
- 19:03Speaker 2: You must be a dark friend, because that that was true.
- 19:06Speaker 1: I didn't believe that, but that confirms everything else.
- 19:09Speaker 2: It's like no, no, wow.
- 19:11Speaker 1: And Paren walks in and goes, oh, the white Cloaks
- 19:14Speaker 1: smells terrible, but the leader smells slightly better, So I
- 19:17Speaker 1: guess I can work with them. Maybe possibly, Yay, Galad's
- 19:20Speaker 1: a fanatic who's not fanatical.
- 19:22Speaker 2: That doesn't even make sense, right, the leader of the
- 19:24Speaker 2: and like, shouldn't this be the group that's less fanatical?
- 19:27Speaker 2: I thought it was like the these are the good ones, right,
- 19:30Speaker 2: these are the ones who didn't have the issues with
- 19:33Speaker 2: the as, the questioners, who aren't the torturers, who aren't
- 19:35Speaker 2: the ones who're crazy fanatical. So yeah, I don't know.
- 19:39Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. So they do a little bit of a
- 19:41Speaker 1: back and forth. You know, he said, she said, potato, potato.
- 19:45Speaker 2: You killed some white cloaks a few years back.
- 19:48Speaker 1: Yeah. Parent demands a more formal parley, which Galad snap
- 19:52Speaker 1: decisions decides he doesn't want to do. It's like the
- 19:54Speaker 1: first time we've ever seen Galad make up truly incorrect
- 19:57Speaker 1: decision because he actually goes back on it. But yeah,
- 20:00Speaker 1: that's just setting up the back and forth that we're
- 20:02Speaker 1: gonna have to suffer through. Forever.
- 20:07Speaker 2: And so then we go back to Glaude's POV where
- 20:10Speaker 2: he basically says, you know, since he has yellow eyes, we're.
- 20:14Speaker 1: Gonna fight, oh right, and paren literally doesn't take him
- 20:17Speaker 1: captive when Grady's like, I could just nab this guy. Yeah, yeah,
- 20:20Speaker 1: it would have been so simple to just do a
- 20:23Speaker 1: little reverse ambush, the little una reverse on who's the
- 20:25Speaker 1: asshole here? And no, parent's so honorable.
- 20:29Speaker 2: And then exchange them for the prisoners, be like, give
- 20:32Speaker 2: me my prisoners back and you can have your large
- 20:33Speaker 2: captain commander back.
- 20:34Speaker 1: It would have been so simple, So many last chapters
- 20:38Speaker 1: of me banging my head against the wall if we
- 20:40Speaker 1: had just done that.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Chapter eleven, an unexpected letter, Let's get away from the
- 20:59Speaker 2: parents stuff.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Matt and Elaine, let's do it well, mostly Elaine but Elaine,
- 21:04Speaker 1: laughing at Matt. I guess this one does deserve a reading. Sure, yes,
- 21:12Speaker 1: they can't possibly think I'll sign this, Elaine said, tossing
- 21:16Speaker 1: the sheaf of papers on to the floor beside her chair.
- 21:19Speaker 1: It's unlikely that they do. Dylon said. Her golden hair
- 21:23Speaker 1: was pristine, her firm face controlled, her slim body poised.
- 21:27Speaker 1: The woman was perfect. It was unfair that she should
- 21:30Speaker 1: look so pristine, while Elaine felt like a sow fattened
- 21:33Speaker 1: up and ripe for the slaughter. The heart in Elaine's
- 21:36Speaker 1: sitting room crackled warmly. Wine sat in the pitcher on
- 21:39Speaker 1: one of the wall's sideboards, but of course she wasn't
- 21:42Speaker 1: allowed any of that if one more person tried to
- 21:45Speaker 1: offer her bloody goat's milk. Brigita lounged near the far wall,
- 21:49Speaker 1: golden braid hanging over her right shoulder, contrasting with her
- 21:52Speaker 1: white collared red coat and sky blue trousers. She poured
- 21:56Speaker 1: herself a cup of tea and smiled over it. Amused
- 21:59Speaker 1: by Elaine's annoyance, Elaine could feel the emotion through the bond.
- 22:03Speaker 1: They were the only ones in the room. Elaine had
- 22:05Speaker 1: retired to the sitting room after accepting the proposal from A.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Laurien's messenger, explaining that she would like to consider the
- 22:12Speaker 1: offer in private. Well, she'd consider it, consider it trash,
- 22:17Speaker 1: for that was all it was. I love Elaine when
- 22:20Speaker 1: she's pissed piste a Lane's pretty good, and Kate reads
- 22:24Speaker 1: pissed off Elaine really really well.
- 22:27Speaker 2: Now I actually do enjoy this. This chunk of Elaine, right.
- 22:31Speaker 2: I think it's fun, It's well written. Pregnant Elaine is
- 22:34Speaker 2: just I think, a fun character, even though she does
- 22:36Speaker 2: really dumb, risky stuff and everyone's like, ah, I don't know.
- 22:41Speaker 2: I like it.
- 22:41Speaker 1: I also like getting to see the after we win
- 22:45Speaker 1: the succession war. The plot continues right the succession arc.
- 22:49Speaker 1: I find a lot more frustrating than her figuring out
- 22:53Speaker 1: how to shore up her power after she technically gets
- 22:56Speaker 1: the throne.
- 22:57Speaker 2: Same same, we definitely have talk a little bit about
- 22:59Speaker 2: a Laura and when we'll get to her though.
- 23:01Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure. So basically we have to start with
- 23:04Speaker 1: this proposal, which is that Alurian is saying, you need
- 23:08Speaker 1: to release the political prisoners that you've taken, you know,
- 23:12Speaker 1: the three women whose names I'm forgetting, and a couple
- 23:16Speaker 1: of other people. She's like, you have to let them
- 23:18Speaker 1: go because reasons reasons politics.
- 23:21Speaker 2: Are Mila, Nian and Elania are the three.
- 23:24Speaker 1: Yes, yes, those three women, and so to let them
- 23:28Speaker 1: go is you know, a show of reconciliation whatever whatever.
- 23:32Speaker 1: But it also puts loyalty towards the Laurian, Like there's
- 23:35Speaker 1: all this you know, who owes who quid pro quo
- 23:38Speaker 1: kind of stuff, and Alaurian is for some reason proposing this,
- 23:42Speaker 1: which pisses a Lane off because it's like she's working
- 23:44Speaker 1: for her enemies. And you know, Alaurian is supposed to be,
- 23:46Speaker 1: you know, more like Dialan, right, She's supposed to be
- 23:50Speaker 1: like an honorary aunt who is best friends with her
- 23:52Speaker 1: mom and one of her most solid supporters, and instead
- 23:54Speaker 1: she's like actively undermining her. It's a whole thing, and
- 23:58Speaker 1: as we learn, there are reasons for that. It's not
- 24:01Speaker 1: just a Laurian being petty. There's stuff going on here.
- 24:05Speaker 2: Right, because, like go back through a Laurian's history, she
- 24:08Speaker 2: was an ally, but she was exiled right by Morgeze right,
- 24:12Speaker 2: beaten and exiled, beaten and exiled. But there was a
- 24:17Speaker 2: point where she was talking about supporting.
- 24:20Speaker 1: Elaine No's She's the never trick cand hold out, Like
- 24:24Speaker 1: when she gets exiled by more Gaze, she is over it.
- 24:27Speaker 1: She never wants to see another trickcand on the throne.
- 24:29Speaker 1: She's very solid about that.
- 24:31Speaker 2: Hmm. Path of Daggers, chapter twenty eight. Hold On. So,
- 24:36Speaker 2: according to Dilon in the Path of Daggers, when she's
- 24:41Speaker 2: laying out her threats, Luon and Alaurian support Elaine, but
- 24:45Speaker 2: may switch to like and may support her instead, So
- 24:49Speaker 2: at least in that moment, maybe I'm rereading this chapter
- 24:55Speaker 2: summary incorrect. Let me do it quick.
- 24:57Speaker 1: Either that or Dialon is super delusional. Yeah. I feel
- 25:03Speaker 1: like every time Alaurian gets to speak for herself she
- 25:06Speaker 1: is a never tracanned absolutist.
- 25:09Speaker 2: Yeah. Maybe I feel like that's more of a hope
- 25:13Speaker 2: that she would support.
- 25:14Speaker 1: Her because of the history that Dylan and Alurian and
- 25:18Speaker 1: Morgaze all had. Right, She's like, well, the three of
- 25:21Speaker 1: us are tight, like, of course she's going to come around,
- 25:23Speaker 1: and a Laurian's like, the fuck I am? I was
- 25:25Speaker 1: publicly whipped No interesting?
- 25:28Speaker 2: Yeah, So yeah, I think that was just Dilan over
- 25:31Speaker 2: like Overest, thinking oh, she'll come to us because and
- 25:34Speaker 2: not actually getting her.
- 25:35Speaker 1: Actually yeah, yeah, Dylan was really hopeful for that entire
- 25:39Speaker 1: process and kept being overly optimistic. But the real reason
- 25:43Speaker 1: why this proposal is happening is not because a Laurian
- 25:45Speaker 1: hates Elaine, but because Duhara is yes anding her frustrations
- 25:50Speaker 1: with Elaine.
- 25:51Speaker 2: Right right, So she's being advised by a black Ajah.
- 25:54Speaker 1: Sister operating as an Alida aligned red right right, It's
- 25:58Speaker 1: really never gonna be a good situation.
- 26:01Speaker 2: And so that's where I assume that this really frustrating
- 26:04Speaker 2: proposal that comes out is like, yes, this is actually
- 26:07Speaker 2: the Black od Jaw sabotaging her.
- 26:09Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure, for sure. I think it's both Elida
- 26:12Speaker 1: making sure that Elaine can't succeed without her and the
- 26:15Speaker 1: Black Auja making sure she can't succeed period, like I
- 26:18Speaker 1: think Duhara is double dipping.
- 26:20Speaker 2: And because the timelines, this is happening before a Gwaine
- 26:23Speaker 2: over throws Alida and reveals the Black Oudjaw and Varren's letters,
- 26:27Speaker 2: you know, and Varren commits suicideal this is all happening
- 26:30Speaker 2: long before that.
- 26:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I would assume that this is maybe around when
- 26:34Speaker 1: a Gwaine's getting captured and into the White Towers. Is
- 26:38Speaker 1: probably roughly around then.
- 26:40Speaker 2: Which is just crazy that that's like two books ago.
- 26:42Speaker 1: Yeah, I know, I know. But yeah. So now Dalon
- 26:46Speaker 1: and Burgita are debating the merits of the proposal in
- 26:50Speaker 1: the sense that these prisoners are expensive to keep, and
- 26:54Speaker 1: keeping them loses its value over time, so choosing when
- 26:59Speaker 1: and how to get of them is a super valid
- 27:01Speaker 1: thing to do, even if you don't like this proposal
- 27:04Speaker 1: per se.
- 27:04Speaker 2: And of course Brigida says, we should murder them, you know,
- 27:09Speaker 2: like they're just they're prisoners, they're for political prisoners. They
- 27:12Speaker 2: should be executed right for treason essentially.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Meanwhile, the political operators are like, no, but I love
- 27:20Speaker 1: this next paragraph.
- 27:21Speaker 2: So our soldiers can die. But the noble's bloody walk away,
- 27:25Speaker 2: Brigida asked. Then she raised her hand before a link
- 27:27Speaker 2: of brod has spared lecture.
- 27:29Speaker 1: Why do they always send the bore?
- 27:31Speaker 2: I understand, I don't agree, but I understand it's always
- 27:34Speaker 2: been this way. And it's like, yeah, thank you Brigida
- 27:37Speaker 2: for pointing out the fact that like, yeah, soldiers can die,
- 27:40Speaker 2: you know, on an order to take a few inches
- 27:43Speaker 2: of hallway. But yet the person who is willing to
- 27:47Speaker 2: fight and have those people sacrifice their lives on their
- 27:49Speaker 2: behalf is not Their life is not up for grabs.
- 27:53Speaker 2: The life is not at risk, and it's like, maybe
- 27:56Speaker 2: it should be.
- 27:56Speaker 1: Why don't princess fight the wars? Why do they always
- 27:59Speaker 1: send them? You know, yeah, no, it's I do appreciate
- 28:04Speaker 1: Burgita being the voice of that's not fucking fair right
- 28:09Speaker 1: in this moment it's really nice to have her, this big,
- 28:13Speaker 1: strong hero soldier, just being like, this is fucked up,
- 28:18Speaker 1: and then the two politicians saying, anyway, it's just like, ah,
- 28:23Speaker 1: like I get I like Burgida. I'm not gonna argue
- 28:26Speaker 1: it as like, obviously, this is the way things are,
- 28:29Speaker 1: this is the way things have always been. But acknowledging
- 28:32Speaker 1: that it's fucked up is important. Maybe we can change
- 28:36Speaker 1: it someday. Certainly in this moment it won't happen, but
- 28:38Speaker 1: we should at least state for the record that this
- 28:41Speaker 1: is not okay.
- 28:42Speaker 2: But you know, it is one of the reasons why
- 28:43Speaker 2: being president is is statistically one of the most dangerous
- 28:47Speaker 2: jobs out there. Right, The number of people who are
- 28:49Speaker 2: a president who have been murdered in office is actually,
- 28:53Speaker 2: as a percentage, a lot higher than almost any of
- 28:55Speaker 2: the job.
- 28:56Speaker 1: Yeah, well, that's also what you get with very small
- 28:57Speaker 1: sample sizes.
- 29:01Speaker 2: Thank you for pointing that out.
- 29:03Speaker 1: But yeah, no, I mean, being being the leader of
- 29:06Speaker 1: a large organization that does many violent things at scale
- 29:11Speaker 1: is not supposed to be a safe position. Although I
- 29:14Speaker 1: guess it is supposed to be a safe position because
- 29:16Speaker 1: a lot of resources get put into making it safe.
- 29:19Speaker 1: What can I use Swiss Guard. It's just really funny
- 29:22Speaker 1: though that the basic soldier is like, seems like the
- 29:26Speaker 1: rich people should probably have to have some consequences, and
- 29:29Speaker 1: the two very rich people.
- 29:30Speaker 2: Just look at her like crazy, No, that's yeah.
- 29:35Speaker 1: Anyway, Why why do we have a plub in here?
- 29:39Speaker 2: How can we play game with people's life if it's
- 29:41Speaker 2: not a game?
- 29:42Speaker 1: Yeah, like you do realize that we're more important because
- 29:45Speaker 1: we wear nice clothes, right, Like that is obvious to
- 29:49Speaker 1: you anyway.
- 29:50Speaker 2: Not to bring up Dungeon Crawler, Carl, but one of
- 29:53Speaker 2: my favorite things about that series is that, you know,
- 29:57Speaker 2: it starts out as the people are stuck in the
- 29:59Speaker 2: dungeon and the aliens get to come down and play
- 30:03Speaker 2: roles and can murder at their heart's content and aren't
- 30:05Speaker 2: in danger, and he's able to change the rules so
- 30:08Speaker 2: that they are in danger, and that sort of changes everything.
- 30:11Speaker 2: That these rich people are now trapped in a game
- 30:13Speaker 2: where they can be murdered, where before it was just
- 30:15Speaker 2: them hunting for fun. I just.
- 30:20Speaker 1: That's a dark premise.
- 30:21Speaker 2: Yes, it's a dark book. It's a bloody dark series
- 30:26Speaker 2: for sure, for sure, but a lot of comedy as well,
- 30:29Speaker 2: which balances it all.
- 30:31Speaker 1: Right, So we're talking about how a Lane's going to
- 30:34Speaker 1: shore up power given that she's nibbling away at it
- 30:36Speaker 1: with giving chunks to the sea folk and political prisoners
- 30:39Speaker 1: and da da da da da, And she says, you
- 30:41Speaker 1: know what we should do, We should have a war
- 30:43Speaker 1: on two fronts. Not really but kind.
- 30:47Speaker 2: Well, I think the sea folk thing is setting up
- 30:48Speaker 2: the fact that she wants to get the kin so
- 30:50Speaker 2: she doesn't have to pay the seafolk in land anymore. Right,
- 30:53Speaker 2: this is the hole She had a bargain with them
- 30:55Speaker 2: to be channelers for her and do gateways, and now
- 30:58Speaker 2: she's like, Okay, I can do that with then and
- 31:00Speaker 2: get a better deal out of them and tell the
- 31:02Speaker 2: sea folk to go. Because this chapter ends with her
- 31:04Speaker 2: going to the can and basically saying let's get them
- 31:07Speaker 2: here in and Or and give them a base of power.
- 31:09Speaker 1: She still has to give the land to the sea folk,
- 31:11Speaker 1: though she just makes it less valuable for them than
- 31:13Speaker 1: they thought it was gonna be.
- 31:15Speaker 2: I know, I know. And she's she's also like, I
- 31:18Speaker 2: don't want to depend on the sea folk anymore, right,
- 31:20Speaker 2: Like that's a big part of I think this is
- 31:22Speaker 2: sort of starting a thought process of like yes, they've
- 31:24Speaker 2: been valuable, but I don't want to be dependent on
- 31:27Speaker 2: them as a foreign entity.
- 31:29Speaker 1: Right, And she's already given them a chunk of land, which,
- 31:32Speaker 1: as Dialand points out, as like kind of a precedent
- 31:35Speaker 1: breaking things, it's a little bit uncool.
- 31:39Speaker 2: But gives them old piece of land that's not actually
- 31:41Speaker 2: on the river, which so they have to like get
- 31:44Speaker 2: off the river to get to the piece of land
- 31:46Speaker 2: and pass through you know, customs.
- 31:47Speaker 1: Anyway, it's a whole thing. It's a whole thing. But yeah,
- 31:53Speaker 1: Elaine says, I literally just finished one more. We should
- 31:57Speaker 1: pick up another one. Though in fairness, Kyrieane doesn't have
- 32:01Speaker 1: to be a war, not necessarily, given that the dragon
- 32:03Speaker 1: wants it to be handed over, et cetera, et cetera.
- 32:05Speaker 1: But from where Brigida and Daland are sitting, it's like
- 32:08Speaker 1: you haven't even cooled your heels yet from the last conflict.
- 32:11Speaker 2: But she does use her conqueror of Kyrieenne to calm
- 32:15Speaker 2: and appease the nobles of and Or. Right, she's able
- 32:18Speaker 2: to give them lands in Kyrieenne of people who have died,
- 32:21Speaker 2: and all of a sudden, you know she's got this
- 32:23Speaker 2: this people want to be in her favor because she's
- 32:26Speaker 2: able to give them things. She's bribing them.
- 32:29Speaker 1: Yeah. No, it's a really good swave political move, but
- 32:33Speaker 1: it's also a gamble, right, Like she basically does double
- 32:37Speaker 1: or nothing with this move, and her advisers are like, ooh,
- 32:40Speaker 1: maybe play it safe. Help, this is scary and it
- 32:43Speaker 1: works out in the end really well.
- 32:44Speaker 2: Instead, well, she's like, it's it's last battle time. There's
- 32:47Speaker 2: no I'm not playing it safe anymore, right, Like we
- 32:49Speaker 2: need to unite. And she points out that like if
- 32:52Speaker 2: I have Kyrienne and and or two of the most
- 32:54Speaker 2: powerful countries, Rand has basically alien all the southern countries,
- 32:59Speaker 2: t her. Yeah, and he's got the South, Elaine sort
- 33:02Speaker 2: of has the middle, and the border lands are going
- 33:03Speaker 2: to fall into line, you know, and parents bringing sort
- 33:06Speaker 2: of what I would call the unconquered lands that sort
- 33:09Speaker 2: of chunk south of the two rivers west of Rand's territory. Right,
- 33:15Speaker 2: that's kind of like abandoned Mirandy, all them parents bringing those,
- 33:19Speaker 2: and Matt should be bringing the shan Chan to the table. Right,
- 33:23Speaker 2: so you really look at Grand's allies, I have really conquered. Right,
- 33:28Speaker 2: Land is in charge of the borderlands. Matt's got the
- 33:31Speaker 2: shawan Chan. Parent's got the two rivers in that area.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Elaine has the middle of the country and Rand has
- 33:39Speaker 2: the south, and they should all be bringing them together.
- 33:43Speaker 2: And I kind of wish that there was a little
- 33:44Speaker 2: more togetherness in the last battle the shawan Chan kind
- 33:48Speaker 2: of being wishy washy, right. I'm like, Matt, do your job.
- 33:52Speaker 2: Paren brings his group and they're not very coherent as
- 33:55Speaker 2: a group. I wish they were a little more coherent.
- 33:58Speaker 2: I think it's because he doesn't have a lot of channelers.
- 34:00Speaker 1: Yeah, but it really works out well for Kyrion and
- 34:04Speaker 1: and Andor to this noble swapping thing because they both
- 34:07Speaker 1: have a lot of disgrace to nobles and depopulated estates
- 34:11Speaker 1: and doing the because uh Rant does that with Tyr
- 34:15Speaker 1: and Kyrie in as well, a little bit where he's
- 34:19Speaker 1: really trying to show I mean, in his case, it's
- 34:20Speaker 1: more of a keep them out of their home country
- 34:23Speaker 1: so that way they can't get into trouble. But you see,
- 34:25Speaker 1: you know, people setting down new roots and developing new
- 34:29Speaker 1: political alliances and like maybe having a bit more international
- 34:33Speaker 1: camaraderie because now you have family members in both countries.
- 34:37Speaker 1: Kind of do it.
- 34:38Speaker 2: Feels to me a little bit like Spain, France and
- 34:40Speaker 2: England all like exchanging nobles through marriage. Like yeah, it's
- 34:44Speaker 2: you got Alien Kyrieen and and or all kind of
- 34:48Speaker 2: inter breeding, intermingling. You have this class of nobles that
- 34:52Speaker 2: kind of rule over all three countries. It's all one
- 34:55Speaker 2: intermingled family. Like it's you know, he's basing this on
- 34:58Speaker 2: European history.
- 35:00Speaker 1: Yeah, definitely, one of Elaine's children is going to be
- 35:03Speaker 1: the Queen Victoria of the whole scenario in the next age.
- 35:07Speaker 2: So she says her claim to the Kyriene throne is strong.
- 35:10Speaker 2: Have we what is that besides Rand's decree.
- 35:13Speaker 1: Her father was the Kyrieenne and noble. Remember, yeah, she's
- 35:18Speaker 1: literally descended from I guess he was brother to the
- 35:24Speaker 1: king at the time when he married more Gaze.
- 35:28Speaker 2: Okay, so she's literally niece to the King of Kyriene at.
- 35:32Speaker 1: One point Yourn the then king of Kyriene I believe
- 35:35Speaker 1: is the relationship. But yeah, that she has an actual
- 35:38Speaker 1: familial pre dragon Reborn connection to the throne. Plus the
- 35:44Speaker 1: dragon Reborn wants her to have.
- 35:45Speaker 2: It, and assuming her grandparent on that side was king
- 35:50Speaker 2: right because her uncle's father would have been king, I assume,
- 35:54Speaker 2: so before him, we don't. I don't think we have
- 35:55Speaker 2: direct history. But assuming that the line wasn't broken.
- 35:58Speaker 1: Right, they were not some upstart new house to the throne.
- 36:01Speaker 1: They were like a normal kyrie in a house to
- 36:03Speaker 1: be holding the throne for the you know. Yeah, however
- 36:05Speaker 1: many generations and yeah, so that's a big part of
- 36:07Speaker 1: where her claim comes from. Is her father Tarangale Damadred.
- 36:12Speaker 2: Tarangale Damondred, that's right.
- 36:13Speaker 1: Yeah, And there was the whole thing about how like
- 36:15Speaker 1: he gave up the right to name the children because
- 36:19Speaker 1: of the fact that he was marrying into more Gazes
- 36:21Speaker 1: country rather than her marrying into his. And so that's
- 36:23Speaker 1: why the kids Ritra Cans instead of Damon Dreads. There's
- 36:26Speaker 1: a whole thing.
- 36:27Speaker 2: But then why is Galade Damon Dread?
- 36:30Speaker 1: Because when Trengale and Ti Grain were married, the dynamic
- 36:35Speaker 1: was different and they their kid was named Damondred. But
- 36:39Speaker 1: when he made a play for the next Queen of
- 36:41Speaker 1: Anne or the negotiation was different because I guess Tom
- 36:44Speaker 1: was in the picture or whatever. Just I don't know,
- 36:50Speaker 1: assume Tom is the reason ultimately why that happened.
- 36:53Speaker 2: Mm hm. I kind of assumed it's like, oh, well,
- 36:55Speaker 2: you've already got your air with your name. He's the
- 36:57Speaker 2: oldest son.
- 36:58Speaker 1: That might have been part of it, but yeah, you
- 37:00Speaker 1: have your firstborn son. So now the queen is going
- 37:03Speaker 1: to have her firstborn daughter be you know, named properly
- 37:06Speaker 1: for her purposes as a future queen.
- 37:09Speaker 2: That's right. It's been so long since I thought about
- 37:10Speaker 2: that family tree that I kind of forgot how it
- 37:12Speaker 2: was all everyone was related, you know, I don't know.
- 37:15Speaker 2: She does have a strong, strong claim to the throne.
- 37:17Speaker 2: You're right, You're right. That's probably the granddaughter of the
- 37:20Speaker 2: previous king and the niece of the one after that.
- 37:23Speaker 1: All right. I mean Gallad probably could make a claim
- 37:26Speaker 1: to sure if he was not a white clok. I
- 37:28Speaker 1: mean'm pretty sure being a white cloak means you give
- 37:30Speaker 1: up your other claims.
- 37:31Speaker 2: Kind of deal.
- 37:32Speaker 1: But like, you know, he has almost the same ancestry claim,
- 37:36Speaker 1: like if they were really that hard up for people
- 37:38Speaker 1: with claims, which they aren't, because obviously so Nori walks in, right,
- 37:45Speaker 1: he's got a little addendonym to the meeting. They thought
- 37:48Speaker 1: they were done for the day, and he says, I
- 37:49Speaker 1: have a couple of pieces of news actually that probably
- 37:52Speaker 1: shouldn't have waited till tomorrow. So here we go.
- 37:55Speaker 2: So this is where we find out that Duhara is
- 37:58Speaker 2: advising Laurian.
- 38:00Speaker 1: But also that she wants to be seen advising Olorian.
- 38:04Speaker 1: That's also part of it is that this is not
- 38:05Speaker 1: actually like a true secret, this is a covert fuck you.
- 38:09Speaker 2: Basically, I think because Duhara came in and said, I
- 38:12Speaker 2: want to be your advisor, and Elaine said, absolutely fucking not.
- 38:16Speaker 2: I would never trust you. You're part of the Red
- 38:18Speaker 2: Ajaw and Black even though I don't know it, And
- 38:22Speaker 2: so she is off visibly supporting Elaine's enemies because of
- 38:26Speaker 2: that rejection would be my assumption.
- 38:28Speaker 1: Yeah, making a show of hiding it, that's totally ineffective.
- 38:32Speaker 1: So that way, it's just like you don't see me, I'm.
- 38:37Speaker 2: Going to put up my hood, but go in my
- 38:39Speaker 2: branded carriage with all my attendants.
- 38:43Speaker 1: Yes, very subtle, very subtle, very subtle, but ironically so
- 38:47Speaker 1: it was subtle enough that Elaine needed her spy master
- 38:49Speaker 1: to take initiative.
- 38:50Speaker 2: Yes, well, that's why you.
- 38:52Speaker 1: Need a novice spy master mind you. This is a
- 38:55Speaker 1: man who was not practiced in the craft, and he
- 38:57Speaker 1: still managed to do better than her figure this out.
- 39:01Speaker 2: I do like this. However, I have reason to believe
- 39:03Speaker 2: that Duhara said I may have had in the hand
- 39:05Speaker 2: in the documents, seemed to be treating with unusual reverence.
- 39:09Speaker 2: He glanced at the page's lane had tossed to the floor.
- 39:11Speaker 2: One bore a distinct outline of her shoe.
- 39:15Speaker 1: So funny. I like that one unusual reverence.
- 39:20Speaker 2: And I don't think we ever get a conclusion about
- 39:24Speaker 2: Duhara's plot. I don't think is she ever dealt with.
- 39:27Speaker 1: I booh, how does Duhara die? I feel like it's
- 39:32Speaker 1: a little bit funky, but I don't remember how google.
- 39:50Speaker 2: During the last battle, Duhara was co opted by Heslam.
- 39:53Speaker 2: Duhara and Phalen were in a circle led by Haslam
- 39:56Speaker 2: and faced off against the circle led by Avienda, the
- 39:59Speaker 2: two Black sisters. We're incinerated by Avianda. So she gets,
- 40:03Speaker 2: uh yeah, fireballed by Avianda.
- 40:06Speaker 1: I wonder when and how she leaves and or and
- 40:10Speaker 1: messing with a lane. Do we see that or does
- 40:13Speaker 1: that just kind of I think she must vanish at
- 40:16Speaker 1: some point. Maybe it's when Elaine tries to do some
- 40:19Speaker 1: stuff she just kind of bounces.
- 40:21Speaker 2: One would assume that the message gets out right the
- 40:23Speaker 2: last battle all the dread Lords, there's a point where
- 40:26Speaker 2: all the dread Lords converge, and one would assume that
- 40:28Speaker 2: happens shortly after like and go to be with the
- 40:32Speaker 2: dark One in the borderlands. Right, Yeah, at.
- 40:37Speaker 1: Some point she chooses to leave from and.
- 40:40Speaker 2: Or, and so at some point I assume she chooses
- 40:42Speaker 2: to leave and gets like recruited. I don't know if
- 40:44Speaker 2: they're recruited by the Forsaken or if it's just like
- 40:49Speaker 2: they get as summoning through their Yeah, there's.
- 40:51Speaker 1: Some kind of bat signal, and then they all go
- 40:53Speaker 1: to like a central organizing station and get like assigned
- 40:56Speaker 1: to their Forsaken to go off and function up.
- 40:58Speaker 2: And one would assume that happens shortly after Agwayne cleanses
- 41:02Speaker 2: the White Tower, because everybody has Yeah.
- 41:06Speaker 1: That would make sense that probably Duhara bounces shortly after
- 41:10Speaker 1: the White Tower purge as soon as news oh, right,
- 41:12Speaker 1: because it would make sense, right, because it would be
- 41:15Speaker 1: a race between if a Gwayne's message or a Black
- 41:18Speaker 1: Sister's message would get to and Or first. Right, if
- 41:21Speaker 1: Elaine is going to be able to take Duhara into custody,
- 41:23Speaker 1: or if Duhara will get let to note to bail
- 41:26Speaker 1: quickly before that happens, So yeah, it must be. It
- 41:29Speaker 1: must be in response to a agwain cleansing the tower.
- 41:32Speaker 2: Because Duhara is on the list.
- 41:34Speaker 1: Oh yeah. And then next we have a page that
- 41:37Speaker 1: Nori treats with unusual reverence, which is of course Math's letter.
- 41:44Speaker 1: Rory usually values his papers, and this one he's like,
- 41:47Speaker 1: this is a dead rat of a piece of paper.
- 41:50Speaker 1: And we get a little bit of a digression talking
- 41:52Speaker 1: about why the mercenary captains are being handled the way
- 41:55Speaker 1: they are, which is essentially that Elaine has had a
- 41:57Speaker 1: lot of the same realizations that paren has, except without
- 42:01Speaker 1: all the misgivings, but just that we need everyone who
- 42:04Speaker 1: wants to swing a sword collected for the last battle.
- 42:07Speaker 1: We don't need them for a succession war, et cetera,
- 42:10Speaker 1: et cetera, but we do need them for a tarment guiden.
- 42:13Speaker 1: So she's trying to sort of collect as many mercenaries
- 42:16Speaker 1: as she can and keep them in a staple holding
- 42:19Speaker 1: pattern around the city in preparation for the last battle
- 42:23Speaker 1: ultimately happening.
- 42:24Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, and I don't think chees Mel and Duhara
- 42:28Speaker 2: are ever in contact. She's not part of that group
- 42:31Speaker 2: that Elaine deals with later, right, because those are the
- 42:34Speaker 2: ones that are known dark friends. They're the ones who
- 42:37Speaker 2: have been known for a while.
- 42:39Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, So.
- 42:41Speaker 2: Yeah, this is where we get the letter. The scrawl
- 42:43Speaker 2: on the page was on even there were numerous crossed
- 42:45Speaker 2: out words, and some of the spelling was creative, and
- 42:48Speaker 2: so yeah, you get we go through here and there's
- 42:50Speaker 2: like a couple of crossed out words. But like I
- 42:55Speaker 2: said earlier, this is a this would be a rough
- 42:57Speaker 2: draft that would scent be sent. I feel like it's
- 43:00Speaker 2: like someone typing up an angry email and sending it
- 43:02Speaker 2: instead of deleting it and retyping.
- 43:04Speaker 1: This is the stream of consciousness blowing off steam first,
- 43:09Speaker 1: first crash, because yeah, sometimes I'll do that right to
- 43:11Speaker 1: write an email or an essay or something. It's just
- 43:15Speaker 1: you stream of consciousness, what you emotionally want to say.
- 43:18Speaker 1: And then yeah, you look it over, you start editing,
- 43:22Speaker 1: you end up deleting the vast majority of it in
- 43:24Speaker 1: the course of getting to the final version. But this
- 43:27Speaker 1: is that first just brain dump onto the page.
- 43:30Speaker 2: Can I also say I think it's unfortunate that it's
- 43:33Speaker 2: not read by Michael Kramer in the audiobook. I think
- 43:36Speaker 2: having Kate Redding read it makes it sound less like Matt.
- 43:39Speaker 1: It sounds well, it sounds like how Elaine is reading
- 43:42Speaker 1: in her head is exactly internal voices here.
- 43:45Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's more of Elaine's internal voice of
- 43:48Speaker 2: what Matt sounds like than actual Matt. And I think
- 43:50Speaker 2: it would be this would actually be a fun thing
- 43:52Speaker 2: to get Michael Kramer to read.
- 43:54Speaker 1: That would be fun. Yeah, because yeah, when you know
- 43:57Speaker 1: from me at least, when I don't know someone's speaking
- 44:00Speaker 1: voice and I read their written stuff, they'd sound like me.
- 44:04Speaker 1: But if I know someone's speaking voice and I know
- 44:06Speaker 1: how their mannerisms go and the way that they choose
- 44:09Speaker 1: to like gesture and pause when they talk, that when
- 44:12Speaker 1: I read their written stuff, I hear it in their cadence.
- 44:16Speaker 1: Matt and Eline have spent enough time together. It should
- 44:20Speaker 1: sound like Matt. It shouldn't sound like her internal voice.
- 44:22Speaker 1: It should sound like Matt. She knows what Matt would
- 44:25Speaker 1: sound like. So yeah, I agree, we should have We
- 44:28Speaker 1: should have Michael read this.
- 44:29Speaker 2: No, and like the crossed out, he crosses out angry
- 44:31Speaker 2: and writes perturbed, But then in parentheses says that means angry,
- 44:34Speaker 2: and it's like.
- 44:36Speaker 1: Okay, again, this is venting, this is this is for,
- 44:39Speaker 1: this is the inside words, this is stream of conscious
- 44:42Speaker 1: is venting, this is not it's so it's so weird.
- 44:45Speaker 2: And there's one where he's using his ring like a
- 44:48Speaker 2: signet like it was and the writs paper, crosses that
- 44:50Speaker 2: out and writes proper like that's just writing fast, you know. Yeah,
- 44:55Speaker 2: there's no spell check on this thing. So and yeah
- 44:58Speaker 2: he said and like I was gonna write this.
- 45:00Speaker 1: Tom is laughing at me so hard that I'm done.
- 45:03Speaker 2: I'm done. I'm not even gonna like And so there's
- 45:06Speaker 2: that sort of like, yeah, this is just it was
- 45:07Speaker 2: a couple of guys who probably you know, made a
- 45:09Speaker 2: poor decision to send a letter and not rewrite it.
- 45:13Speaker 1: Yeah. I also love how he throws in the most
- 45:16Speaker 1: important piece of information so casually and found postand but
- 45:21Speaker 1: like that's the whole point is the Bell Founders. The
- 45:24Speaker 1: Bell Founders is the most critical thing, and it is
- 45:26Speaker 1: given as little emphasis as him being married. Right, even
- 45:31Speaker 1: him being married is given more words and set up
- 45:34Speaker 1: than the Bell Founder's line. But that's the real crux.
- 45:38Speaker 2: And you acted like a queen then, So I guess
- 45:40Speaker 2: I don't know why I'm surprised that now you act
- 45:42Speaker 2: like a queen when you really are a queen again.
- 45:45Speaker 1: Stream of consciousness, this is just dictating into your note
- 45:48Speaker 1: in your phone.
- 45:50Speaker 2: So yeah, in my head, I built that up as
- 45:52Speaker 2: a much more pray on based misspelling bad letter. And
- 45:58Speaker 2: now I'm like, eh, I could do without the pps.
- 46:01Speaker 2: Don't mind me calling your backside pretty like that. I
- 46:03Speaker 2: think I could have just gotten cut. Yeah, and also
- 46:06Speaker 2: the PS salutations means greeting, Like, there's a couple of
- 46:09Speaker 2: things in here that I think would if it was
- 46:11Speaker 2: just a little bit shorter, a little less try hard
- 46:14Speaker 2: on the matt humor, I would enjoy it better.
- 46:17Speaker 1: I'm much nodding, much nodding.
- 46:19Speaker 2: But it's not as egregious as I had built up
- 46:21Speaker 2: in my head by far.
- 46:23Speaker 1: That happens. Sometimes we turn a bath into a series
- 46:26Speaker 1: of baths, or a few chapters into a book and
- 46:30Speaker 1: a half worth of complaining. Right, yeah, Fuji points out
- 46:34Speaker 1: credit where credit is due. These are wa characters trying
- 46:37Speaker 1: to communicate, trying, which you know, but they are trying,
- 46:42Speaker 1: which is more than most of them do. Yeah, this
- 46:46Speaker 1: is emotionally cathartic for Elaine, aside from getting the news
- 46:50Speaker 1: that Tom is alive and all that. Like, she's just
- 46:52Speaker 1: she's highly struggled, and he just gives her this ridiculous
- 46:55Speaker 1: little standard routine and she laughs and it just makes
- 46:58Speaker 1: her whole mood relax and it's good.
- 47:00Speaker 2: Well, and she's felt guilt over abandoning this group of
- 47:05Speaker 2: people in Abu Dhar. She's like, the stan Chan came
- 47:08Speaker 2: and I took the kin and I get way the
- 47:10Speaker 2: fuck out of there, and I left behind these people.
- 47:12Speaker 2: And as far as she knows, they could all be dead,
- 47:14Speaker 2: they could all be enslaved by the shan Chan. She
- 47:15Speaker 2: has no idea, And so I think there's just there
- 47:18Speaker 2: was some relief in there, some unloading of guilt.
- 47:22Speaker 1: Intention right, Like it's one of those like things where
- 47:26Speaker 1: you carry it for someone, you forget you have it,
- 47:28Speaker 1: and then and then it releases and you're like, WHOA,
- 47:31Speaker 1: I didn't know my shoulders could be that low. Holy shit. Yeah. Yeah,
- 47:36Speaker 1: there's a lot going into her outburst here, but it's
- 47:39Speaker 1: it's good to see La and laugh. She's really cranky
- 47:42Speaker 1: and now she's you know, laughing hysterically.
- 47:44Speaker 2: It's Greatgew's line, he's got a nice butt, but his
- 47:47Speaker 2: face is to far too pretty. I'm not into pretty men.
- 47:50Speaker 1: She's like, I will admire him from behind, only.
- 47:55Speaker 2: The front.
- 47:55Speaker 1: Eh yeah, yeah, And then she says, finally someone I
- 48:00Speaker 1: can go drinking with who doesn't look at me as
- 48:02Speaker 1: their bloody military Superior's kind of echoing paren in a
- 48:07Speaker 1: lot of ways, just that, like, I need people who
- 48:10Speaker 1: don't look up to me because that makes me uncomfortable.
- 48:13Speaker 1: And Matt, you know, Matt is our irreverent friend. He
- 48:16Speaker 1: will not look up to you at all.
- 48:18Speaker 2: And Brigito was never really meant to be the commander
- 48:21Speaker 2: of troops, right, that's not her role again, that should
- 48:24Speaker 2: have been Godwin, who should be here doing that right now,
- 48:28Speaker 2: or and should have been during the whole session war.
- 48:30Speaker 2: But you know, and here Elaine has a good instinct
- 48:34Speaker 2: that Matt's soldiers are much more worthwhile than most other soldiers.
- 48:38Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, I think that's to Matt's credit, right, She's
- 48:42Speaker 2: she's understanding something about Matt. She still doesn't believe in
- 48:45Speaker 2: his luck.
- 48:47Speaker 1: So funny she.
- 48:48Speaker 2: Does say, oh, soldiers, and they're superstitions, when Brigidi is like, no,
- 48:52Speaker 2: he she doesn't believe Brigido when he's like, no, he's
- 48:54Speaker 2: actually very lucky.
- 48:55Speaker 1: Yeah, she just looks down on all Soldiery stuff as
- 48:58Speaker 1: being oh, those silly plebs and they're superstitious. It's just
- 49:02Speaker 1: like you need to pay more attention to the line,
- 49:04Speaker 1: as Brigida.
- 49:05Speaker 2: Said, and then immediately is like, oh, yeah, who is he? Well,
- 49:07Speaker 2: he's Tavern, So could do you not see how that okay,
- 49:11Speaker 2: how the luck could be real when in one breath
- 49:14Speaker 2: you say he doesn't have the luck, in another he's
- 49:16Speaker 2: Teverean when tavern is the bending of the pattern, which
- 49:18Speaker 2: could be interpreted very easily as luck.
- 49:21Speaker 1: It's like the smallest stretch you could possibly make. Right right, anyway,
- 49:26Speaker 1: She tells Nuri, next time someone claims to know me,
- 49:29Speaker 1: make sure to at least run it by Burgida, and
- 49:31Speaker 1: also definitely invite this guy in because he is who
- 49:34Speaker 1: he says he is.
- 49:35Speaker 2: He is a friend, and he's got kyrieene in soldiers,
- 49:38Speaker 2: and we just talked about taking over Kyrieenne. So let's
- 49:40Speaker 2: use those soldiers to be native Sons. Because remember, you
- 49:44Speaker 2: know a lot of the Band of the Red Hand,
- 49:46Speaker 2: the origin was Matt.
- 49:48Speaker 1: Matt picks up the Kyrie in in nobility during the
- 49:53Speaker 1: shidow getting kicked out of Kyrie, right, he has a
- 49:56Speaker 1: little core of the Tyrants, and then the are looking
- 50:00Speaker 1: down on the Kyrieane and really aggressively, and Matt has
- 50:03Speaker 1: to kind of be like, no, y'all are equal, but yeah,
- 50:06Speaker 1: it is Tyrants and Kyrieene and who make up the
- 50:09Speaker 1: band before it starts just attracting everyone with a sword.
- 50:12Speaker 2: Right, Okay, okay, you're right. I got those two scenes
- 50:16Speaker 2: confused in my head.
- 50:17Speaker 1: Easy to do. They are two asshole countries that mostly
- 50:20Speaker 1: just operate as big military units. It's easy to confuse them.
- 50:24Speaker 2: And Matt's playing dice and cards with the nobles, right, yeah.
- 50:28Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly exactly, but yeah, he does have a lot
- 50:31Speaker 1: of Kyrie in and compared to most nationalities, it's Tyrants
- 50:34Speaker 1: and Kyrie and are like the two big wedges of
- 50:36Speaker 1: the pie chart. And then everything else is you know,
- 50:38Speaker 1: a regulars from everywhere, I.
- 50:40Speaker 2: Guess, except you know the fact that it grew by
- 50:44Speaker 2: multiple sizes while he was away. So it's like the
- 50:46Speaker 2: core group might be Kyrieenne and Tyrine, but I bet
- 50:49Speaker 2: the majority are from you know, Murandi.
- 50:54Speaker 1: Right, like yeah, Atara and yeah, yeah, but nonetheless she
- 51:00Speaker 1: has a lot of Kyrie and to potentially loan to
- 51:03Speaker 1: Elaine for a more or less peaceful transition of power
- 51:07Speaker 1: in their own native land, which in many ways Elaine
- 51:09Speaker 1: would be going into help continue finishing what was happening
- 51:13Speaker 1: when Matt was in their first recruiting them, right, like
- 51:16Speaker 1: the shidow taking over and then the nobility rebelling against Rand.
- 51:21Speaker 1: Is like they're still dealing with the fallout from that.
- 51:24Speaker 1: That is the power of vacuum that Elaine is looking
- 51:27Speaker 1: to finally fill permanently and stably.
- 51:30Speaker 2: No, And she makes the point with Kyrie and I
- 51:31Speaker 2: began knitting as ault together. Rand already controls Ilien and
- 51:34Speaker 2: Tyr and has bonds to the Ieel. You know, she
- 51:36Speaker 2: doesn't know about parents, she doesn't know about Matt, but
- 51:38Speaker 2: like there is this like bonding of the people and
- 51:41Speaker 2: bringing together the different sections of the world to fight
- 51:45Speaker 2: the last battle.
- 51:47Speaker 1: She didn't get the eel fin prophecy about the North
- 51:49Speaker 1: and the South must be as one, but she's got
- 51:51Speaker 1: the same general idea that like, maybe unity is the
- 51:55Speaker 1: correct approach to this upcoming world shattering battle thing.
- 52:00Speaker 2: And she's also like, maybe I should be in charge
- 52:02Speaker 2: of the Dragon's empire after Rand dies, if he dies,
- 52:05Speaker 2: but she's probably gonna die.
- 52:06Speaker 1: I mean, she's looking at Kyrie and it's a void
- 52:08Speaker 1: of power, and then she's extrapolating forward to Rand's much
- 52:11Speaker 1: larger empire and the inevitable void of power that his
- 52:14Speaker 1: death will create. And she's like, mm, a pretty savvy
- 52:17Speaker 1: political operator, I should be positioned to take.
- 52:20Speaker 2: That because Alien and Teer border her lands, right, So,
- 52:24Speaker 2: and if they're both going to be left leaderless, all
- 52:26Speaker 2: of a sudden, she controls a third of the continent, basically,
- 52:29Speaker 2: everything but the border lands and the shan Chan lands.
- 52:32Speaker 1: Yeah, and in many ways, you know, she's got the
- 52:36Speaker 1: right arrogance to try to, you know, match hawk Wing
- 52:39Speaker 1: in some ways, right like and or Or Camlin has
- 52:42Speaker 1: been an institution since the embers of Arter Hawking's empire.
- 52:46Speaker 1: For her to say, well, it seems right that the
- 52:47Speaker 1: son should never set on the andor At empire. It
- 52:50Speaker 1: feels keeping in character with who that nation is.
- 52:53Speaker 2: It is Camelot, right Like that's yeah. And so then
- 52:56Speaker 2: she's just basically like, yeah, I'm going to go take
- 52:58Speaker 2: Kyrie in. I need traveling to be able to rule
- 53:00Speaker 2: to major cities at the same time, So let's go
- 53:02Speaker 2: talk to the kin.
- 53:04Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, basically we get a timestamp that Rand is
- 53:08Speaker 1: really dark right now. But she really doesn't have time
- 53:10Speaker 1: to think about that, you know, she just sort of
- 53:12Speaker 1: notes it to the side and then says, Yeah, more
- 53:14Speaker 1: immediate issue, let's figure out the future of the Kin.
- 53:17Speaker 2: What did she say about Rand?
- 53:18Speaker 1: She glanced to the west where she could feel that
- 53:21Speaker 1: lot of emotions that was Rand. The only thing she
- 53:23Speaker 1: ever sensed from him these days was a cold anger
- 53:25Speaker 1: buried deeply? Was he an Ara Domon?
- 53:28Speaker 2: So, yeah, timestamp which.
- 53:30Speaker 1: I think we saw Paren was thinking about Rand earlier.
- 53:33Speaker 1: I was like, oh, yes, Rand feels like shit for
- 53:35Speaker 1: whatever reason. And he sees a vision of Rand with
- 53:38Speaker 1: Ninive on muddy streets. And then Elaine thinks, here is
- 53:42Speaker 1: he in Aaron Demon's I think he is. That is
- 53:44Speaker 1: the era Demon section.
- 53:46Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, he's failing Ara Domon right now. Yeah, where
- 53:48Speaker 2: he's cutting open the grain section of the grain and
- 53:51Speaker 2: right right, yeah, that it's all going bad and everyone's
- 53:54Speaker 2: going to starve, and he's abandoning those people.
- 53:56Speaker 1: Right, That's that's where we're at in terms of the timeline.
- 54:00Speaker 1: But yeah, that's not really Elaine's problem. She's got plenty
- 54:02Speaker 1: of food. We write, food is not so much an
- 54:04Speaker 1: issue for her. She's worrying about the future. The present
- 54:08Speaker 1: is less of an issue for her. The future is
- 54:10Speaker 1: the issue. And yeah, I guess I should do a readout.
- 54:13Speaker 2: Uh, sure, let's do it.
- 54:15Speaker 1: She could not let that happen. The woman in her
- 54:17Speaker 1: cringe to think of planning for Rand's death, but the
- 54:20Speaker 1: Queen could not be so squeamish. The world was changing.
- 54:24Speaker 1: I realize it will be difficult to administer two nations,
- 54:27Speaker 1: Elaine said, but I must hold Kyrie in for the
- 54:30Speaker 1: good of both thrones. She turned and met Dilond's eyes,
- 54:34Speaker 1: and the older woman nodded slowly. It seems you are committed.
- 54:39Speaker 1: I am, Elaine said, but I feel I'm going to
- 54:42Speaker 1: need reliable use of traveling if I'm going to manage it.
- 54:45Speaker 1: Let's set up a meeting for me with Jamaico and Elise.
- 54:48Speaker 1: We need to discuss the future of the king. That
- 55:32Speaker 1: is going to be a very productive relationship for and Or.
- 55:35Speaker 1: Having the kin base there is going to have short,
- 55:38Speaker 1: medium and long term benefits for and Or well.
- 55:40Speaker 2: And if you look at where the White Tower is positioned,
- 55:43Speaker 2: it's kind of in the no man's land between Kyrieenne
- 55:46Speaker 2: and Or and the borderlands, and she's already got the
- 55:49Speaker 2: Black Tower there. It's like, you know, she really is
- 55:53Speaker 2: sort of making her this space the center of channeling
- 55:57Speaker 2: because she's got the kin where the White Tower is
- 55:58Speaker 2: going to retire, She's probably going to expand upwards into
- 56:01Speaker 2: that land where the White Tower is, and she's got
- 56:04Speaker 2: the Black Tower there already. Yeah, because like, look, I
- 56:07Speaker 2: don't know, I mean, who's going to rule? Well, it
- 56:09Speaker 2: doesn't Ran set up rulers for Illian and Tier.
- 56:12Speaker 1: He sets up stewards for the Dragon.
- 56:15Speaker 2: Don't uh, doesn't the steward of Tier get become king?
- 56:18Speaker 1: Yeah, he does transition the steward to being a proper king.
- 56:22Speaker 1: That's Darlin, and what about Lilian Alien They find Stepaneos
- 56:28Speaker 1: in the White Tower, still undamaged, and they pick someone
- 56:33Speaker 1: from the Council who's not tainted or a dark friend
- 56:36Speaker 1: or whatever, and yeah, he gives it back. I forget
- 56:40Speaker 1: the specifics of how Ilion goes down, So.
- 56:43Speaker 2: One would assume then that Elaine doesn't take them over
- 56:46Speaker 2: after the last battle, and they just maintain that when
- 56:49Speaker 2: they signed the Piece of the Dragon, that that's just
- 56:51Speaker 2: the borders are where they are.
- 56:52Speaker 1: Right, because Elaine has a large enough empire that she's
- 56:55Speaker 1: got a she's a good ally, right, you don't have
- 56:58Speaker 1: to take over a thing in order to be in
- 57:01Speaker 1: charge of dealing with the sean Chan issue. Right, there's
- 57:03Speaker 1: the whole like in abvien As the vision they call
- 57:05Speaker 1: like the Pact of the Griffin, right, Like, it's not
- 57:07Speaker 1: one nation, it's a mutual defense agreement. And Alan's not
- 57:11Speaker 1: you know, power hungry for power's sake. She just has
- 57:13Speaker 1: a very big sense of what stability looks like, which,
- 57:16Speaker 1: you know, in fairness, given the way we've seen these
- 57:18Speaker 1: nations interact over the last two years of this book's timeline,
- 57:21Speaker 1: she's not wrong.
- 57:23Speaker 2: Right, but a lot of changes in the last two years,
- 57:27Speaker 2: I mean, and.
- 57:28Speaker 1: The world's been shrinking for centuries, right, the human world
- 57:31Speaker 1: has been in retreat, like the Ogier talk about, for
- 57:33Speaker 1: centuries upon centuries, So looking to make a nice big
- 57:36Speaker 1: bubble to hold stability, and it makes sense.
- 57:39Speaker 2: And then to expand out right like the one would
- 57:41Speaker 2: assume that a lot of the unclaimed lands, now that
- 57:44Speaker 2: you've got trains, right, are very quickly going to be populated, well.
- 57:48Speaker 1: Especially with the loss of the Dark One and the
- 57:51Speaker 1: Dark Armies of Trolis. Right, there's going to be so
- 57:54Speaker 1: much room for humanity to finally expand and have their
- 57:58Speaker 1: birth rate go up and not all be slaughtered by
- 58:00Speaker 1: the age of sixteen and Tralla grades or whatever. So
- 58:03Speaker 1: they're going to be able to, yeah, move into spaces
- 58:06Speaker 1: that they haven't had access to for many centuries, and
- 58:09Speaker 1: with such better technology. Yeah, it makes sense to set
- 58:13Speaker 1: those those boundary markers out nice and big anticipating that
- 58:16Speaker 1: growth period.
- 58:17Speaker 2: Yeah, and one wonders how much and Or and Kyriene
- 58:20Speaker 2: are going to continue to be separate nations, right, Yeah,
- 58:24Speaker 2: and then I can I bet the Iel end up
- 58:27Speaker 2: a lot of them end up settling in the unclaimed
- 58:29Speaker 2: lands of Kyriane because there's a huge chunk of land
- 58:32Speaker 2: between the waste in Kyrieenne that they've abandoned because they're
- 58:36Speaker 2: afraid of the ideal.
- 58:37Speaker 1: And then they're nice and close to the waste if
- 58:39Speaker 1: they want to go, you know, ex visit their family
- 58:41Speaker 1: who don't like being in the.
- 58:42Speaker 2: Wet length, or go to Ridian, right, because Ridian's also
- 58:45Speaker 2: become a major city, right, that's being a major hub
- 58:47Speaker 2: of commerce and all that kind of stuff.
- 58:49Speaker 1: So, yeah, you're going to have a population center at
- 58:52Speaker 1: that mountain pass. It makes sense that the ideal would
- 58:54Speaker 1: be the ones gravitating to do that totally. Yeah, the
- 58:57Speaker 1: fourth Age is going to be a real boom for sure.
- 59:00Speaker 2: Definitely. Yeah. No, again, the only issue is the Sean Chan.
- 59:03Speaker 2: But I just I just believe that the culture is
- 59:06Speaker 2: has to change in the shawn Chan. Like the fact
- 59:09Speaker 2: that all of the Suldam can be collared just means
- 59:13Speaker 2: that the society and the power dynamic is going to
- 59:15Speaker 2: fall apart. There's just no way they can maintain it.
- 59:18Speaker 1: I mean a Guyan and bail Domon alone are on
- 59:22Speaker 1: a mission. Lyellwyn and bail Domon, they're on like a
- 59:26Speaker 1: mission on their own to try to, you know, jail
- 59:29Speaker 1: break people's minds for lack of a better term. Many
- 59:32Speaker 1: people are on that mission. It's Yeah, the shawn Chan
- 59:35Speaker 1: culture is going to change profoundly and for the better.
- 59:37Speaker 2: Yeah, we'll have to talk a lot about the bargain
- 59:40Speaker 2: between Elaine and Tuon about like the channelers and how
- 59:45Speaker 2: they can they can request to be collared, And I
- 59:49Speaker 2: just I have a lot of curiosity about the implications
- 59:52Speaker 2: of that it'll be fun to talk about.
- 59:55Speaker 1: That chapter will not be a doubleheader. Just making a prediction.
- 59:58Speaker 2: Now, for sure, for sure, But I think we're done
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: with this doubleheader.
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: Yeah, that was quick. I will not say it short
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: and sweet, but it was short and fine. I guess
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: it's fine.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: Yeah, you know those chapters, especially the parent Gala chapters,
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: like one thing's happening, right, it's parent meeting with Glad
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: and a few things around that. But like Sanderson really does,
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: sometimes when he sets things up, is setting up one
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: or two things per chapter. He's not necessarily doing a
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: lot of deep, deep movement in these chapters. Yeah, he's
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: an outliner. And when you can spot the outline, you
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: can spot the header of that outline, which was parent
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: meets with Glad. I can see it in my chapter
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: summaries right as I go through Sanderson's books. You know,
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: when I go through Jordan's books, I'd have this happens, Comma,
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: this happens, Comma, this happens, and I'd be like, well,
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: I'm leaving out a bunch, but that's enough for us
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: to get the gift of it. The gist, the gist.
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: I learned that word from reading. That's okay, but my
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: summaries of the Santa and stuff is generally one sentence
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: and it captures everything, you know, So it's just it's
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: even I am actually currently going back and listening to
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: Warrior of the All Tai, which is Jordan's you know,
- 1:01:12Speaker 2: proto Wheel of Time slash Barbarian fantasy, and just like, ah,
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: the number of layers going on, even in that sort
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: of early early book of his, which is a very
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: simple plot line with very simple characters, kind of reminds
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: me like if Land was I eel sure, sure, and
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: the isid I and the wise ones were the same
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: thing as well, they were merged together, and like, yeah,
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: so there's this the interesting culture and magic system and
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: it's really good. But uh yeah, just the layers, the
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: layers that Jordan puts in there almost without trying, almost
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: just by having rounded characters in the backgrounds. It's so good.
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: Yeah. And speaking of layers, I have layers upon layers
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: of podcasts that you can find in the show notes
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: or you can find in theory on our website Foxndrivenmedia
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: dot com. You definitely should check them out and follow
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: us on social media on YouTube because all the podcasts
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: are going to YouTube. Now, if you're a YouTube podcast
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: listener kind of person, it's another layer of infrastructure.
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: You can't see us, you can just hear us.
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, we're still not doing our phases. But if
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: you like to get your podcast through YouTube, which I
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: know some people do, you can find us there. And otherwise,
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: Equinox is coming. The world is on fire. I still
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: don't have a dog. I think those are all the
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: important pieces of information. I think that's all that the
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: audience needs to know at this point.
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: You don't want to get into the assassinations of political
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: and non political figures.
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: Do we want to get into listing all the people
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: whose deaths should be getting honored? Actually for real, No, no,
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: we don't. Let's turn recording. Bye everyone, Bye, All right,
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: recording is on.
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: So yeah, you're just tuning in. You missed our stunning
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: discussion on how much we don't know about video games,
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: So I'm assuming that's not something we need to repeat
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: for recording.
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: Yeah. I think I think the people can can stand
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: to believe that we're video game geniuses, to believe that
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: we don't need to disabuse them of that head canon.
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: Without any evidence to the contrary. You can imagine. I
- 1:03:19Speaker 2: am an excellent gamer. Life updates. I had my one
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: year anniversary since my wedding. That was fun. We went
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: to the coast, had some seafoods, had a good time. Yeah.
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: So we still seem happy with each other a year later,
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: So that's going well. I suppose that's good.
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: It's now been a year and a day since you
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: made it formal, a year with a few days, but
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: over a year.
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: And a day, you know, two days.
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: Yeah, yep, I've celebrated another birthday. I am enjoying my
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: mid thirties most excellently. I got to go see Thievery
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: Corporation at an outdoor show, and if you know Thievery Corporation,
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: you know that was awesome. The band was super on fire.
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: I danced my butt off. It was great. It was great.
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: We've both had a very good week.
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: Yes, so my throat's a little more, uh croaky than normal,
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: that's yeah.
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: My voice doesn't sound like I was screaming for three
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: hours straight at a literal goddess who was two feet
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: away from me.
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: I'm impressed. I'm impressed that you don't have any leftover scratchiness.
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: Yeah, no, my voice was fine. My feet which I
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: expected to be tired, were fine, Like I just sailed
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: through that on Cloud nine and seriously, they were so
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: on fire. They were just the band was so tight
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: and on fire. It was so good. Like it's one
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: thing to go to a show where people are talented,
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: it's another thing when they are all thinking together and
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: like you can just see them making decisions on the
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: fly and having fun. And like half the show was
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: an encore. I swear it was. It was great.
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: It's always fun when they like do more after.
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, And then the dude came down with it
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: with the hand to the to the audience and all
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: the hands were reaching up and I got to touch
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: the guitarist. It was so cool. I never go up
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: to the front of the dance thing, and I just
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: had every possible experience you want to have up there
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: with none of the bad ones. It was Oh, it's
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: just so good.
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: I can admit though, that Encore stressed me out. I
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: wish bands just played a set and then left, because
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: then I don't know how long I'm going to be. Like,
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: even if I'm enjoying the band, I want to know
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: when they're going to finish. I have a hard time
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: not knowing when something's gonna end.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: I do get frustrated with like if I scream loud enough,
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: will you come back?
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: And like that game back and forth is a little annoying.
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: But at the same time, I'm also like, if they
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: come back, I'm so happy that, Like I don't even
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: care what play with me.
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: It's fine.
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: And then I knew I was gonna need an after
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: party after or something as long as we can stretch
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: this out, like sure, I'm not going home and going
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: to bed for many hours regardless of when you people finish,
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: because that venu closed early and I was not ready
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: to be done celebrating.
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: Speaking of staying up later, my shift is changing slightly.
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: I'm going from just for a few months, I'm going
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: to a more middle of the day shift rather than
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: early morning shift, which means I have a hat to
- 1:05:54Speaker 2: practice staying up late every night. So I've gone from
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: like I need to go to bed at eight thirty two.
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: I need to be able to stay up till one,
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: and so I've been stretching that out, and I have
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: to do that in one weekend. It's a long weekend,
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: but I still have to do that in one weekend.
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: So I've been trying to stay up later, somewhat unsuccessfully.
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: I made it till about ten thirty last night before
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: I wanted to pass out. So my goal for tonight is, like,
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: let's make it to eleven, maybe eleven thirty. I'll have
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: to do a very sleepy shift. I'll probably be very
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: sleepy at work next week for the first couple of days,
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: and then after that I should be fine. But changing
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: your schedule by six hours in a couple of days
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: is significant.
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: I mean, daylight savings time already sucks, and that's just
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: one hour.
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, so you know, I'll pay for it, But
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: I am looking forward to the changing shift. I think
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: that's going to be I'm just doing it for a
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: couple of months, and I think it'll be a nice
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: just refresher on my schedule to you know, been working
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: at this job now for almost four years three and
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: a half, I suppose it's more accurate. And yeah, it's
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: just nice to chane. I've been working the same shift
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: the whole time, and it's nice to change things up
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: every once in a while.
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: I'm looking forward to the seasonal change. Equinox is like
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: two weeks from now, not even it's less than two
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: weeks and I am Now I've had my birthday. I'm like,
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: you know what, I'm ready for fall. Everyone backup summer.
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: I'm ready for it to be fall. Now.
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: It feels like fall now, it does. It feels like
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: it's switched very quickly.
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's yeah. That we got over half an
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: inch of rain on Saturday night slash Sunday morning. It's
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: just like, yeah, it is the fall. Weather is coming,
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: and I'm I'm finally ready for it.
- 1:07:25Speaker 2: All right, Well, speaking of a fall, do you want
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: to talk about I don't know how that relates to
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: the book whatsoever. I was going to try and do it, but.
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I know, I can't. I can't see how to
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: connect my favorite season of all with these chapters. This
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: is this is just it's fine. Thank you for listening
