- 0:06Speaker 1: It's second down 14 31 of the giants it's a
- 0:09Speaker 1: shotgun snap to the ram quarterback stafford sets side on
- 0:12Speaker 1: throw leaping catch 20.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Down the middle 10 pass mark five adams touchdown what
- 0:20Speaker 2: a throw and what a catch 31 yard touchdown for
- 0:25Speaker 2: the rams who go up early late first quarter on
- 0:28Speaker 2: the giants.
- 0:31Speaker 3: And week number two of the NFL season in the books.
- 0:35Speaker 4: Now we all turn our.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Attention, NFL, college football, high school football, all levels of football,
- 0:42Speaker 3: to week three.
- 0:43Speaker 4: Good afternoon, everybody.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Welcome to the program here on Sports Radio AM 1300,
- 0:47Speaker 3: The Zone, and where you can always listen to us
- 0:49Speaker 3: for free on the iHeartRadio app. My name is Craig Way.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Glad to have you alongside. That was Kevin Harlan, Westwood One,
- 0:55Speaker 3: with the call. Do you know, our producer, Jake Herman,
- 0:58Speaker 3: do you know, Jake, that.
- 1:02Speaker 4: Kevin Harlan works without a spotter.
- 1:04Speaker 6: That's incredible.
- 1:05Speaker 4: I know. He does pretty well for work. I wonder why.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Well, I had a producer tell me that, you know,
- 1:12Speaker 3: that had produced him on some Monday night games, a
- 1:15Speaker 3: Westwood one, that he just felt uncomfortable, kind of felt
- 1:19Speaker 3: encumbered by it, felt like it could be distracting to him,
- 1:23Speaker 3: even if somebody's just pointing to who made the tackle
- 1:26Speaker 3: or the interception who grabbed it.
- 1:28Speaker 4: Listen. Listen.
- 1:29Speaker 3: For people who compliment me on what I do, and
- 1:32Speaker 3: I appreciate that, there's no way that I could be
- 1:35Speaker 3: as effective at doing what I do if I didn't
- 1:37Speaker 3: have a good statistician, which we do have in Steve Leach,
- 1:41Speaker 3: and an outstanding spotter. And I didn't even really have
- 1:45Speaker 3: to teach him that much. Andy Wade, my son, has
- 1:47Speaker 3: been my spotter since he was 13. And he's just
- 1:50Speaker 3: gotten better over time with what one has used him.
- 1:52Speaker 3: He's worked on television games. And so without those guys,
- 1:59Speaker 3: in addition to having an excellent analyst and Roger Wallace
- 2:03Speaker 3: and Will Matthews on the sidelines, I couldn't do the
- 2:04Speaker 3: job that I do. So for Kevin Harlan to do
- 2:09Speaker 3: it without a spotter, can be pretty impressive. So, uh,
- 2:13Speaker 3: but he, he would rather not work with one. So
- 2:16Speaker 3: called that touchdown pass to Devante Adams without, without a spotter. And, uh,
- 2:21Speaker 3: he called this touchdown pass as well to Devante Adams.
- 2:25Speaker 4: With the, uh, with the Rams getting the win on
- 2:27Speaker 4: Monday night.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Rams have it first and 10 tight end in motion.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Jaffer gets the pass off the side.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Over the shoulder, catch both side and the end zone
- 2:40Speaker 2: caught touchdown.
- 2:40Speaker 6: Adams lassoes it.
- 2:42Speaker 2: His second touchdown reception tonight. 11-yard touchdown catch as Stafford
- 2:50Speaker 2: has thrown yet another touchdown tonight in the first home
- 2:54Speaker 2: game for the Rams at now 20-3 over the Giants in.
- 2:59Speaker 4: The third quarter.
- 3:01Speaker 3: Yeah, that was another one there, again, from Westwood One
- 3:05Speaker 3: that Kevin Harlan called. Matthew Stafford had a fine game.
- 3:09Speaker 3: He bounced back nicely from that loss to San Francisco.
- 3:11Speaker 3: He threw four touchdown passes. Even without Puka Nakua on
- 3:14Speaker 3: the field, the Rams got plenty of offense. They ran
- 3:19Speaker 3: the ball well with Kyron Williams and Blake Corum and
- 3:23Speaker 3: then got the touchdown pass as well.
- 3:26Speaker 4: Touchdown passes as well. All of that.
- 3:30Speaker 3: And let me tell you something, all of that is
- 3:32Speaker 3: Rams fan. You know, that's nice and all that. I'm
- 3:33Speaker 3: glad they got back to 500 and all that kind
- 3:35Speaker 3: of stuff. And they look a little more like themselves and,
- 3:38Speaker 3: and they had the bonus of Aaron Donald's return. I
- 3:42Speaker 3: think he had what he had three tackles in the game.
- 3:45Speaker 3: And he said it was special to be back there.
- 3:49Speaker 3: Three tackles, a tackle for a loss and, Didn't have
- 3:52Speaker 3: any pressures. He played 32 snaps, 58% of their defensive snaps.
- 4:01Speaker 3: And Sean McVay was asked whether he was on a
- 4:04Speaker 3: snap count.
- 4:04Speaker 4: He said, what do you think? You tell him to
- 4:06Speaker 4: come out.
- 4:06Speaker 3: Now, all of that is well and good, even if
- 4:12Speaker 3: you're a Rams fan like I am. But the best
- 4:14Speaker 3: part of the night for me– Yeah, I mean, the
- 4:18Speaker 3: win's important as someone who was rooting for the team.
- 4:22Speaker 3: But probably just as important was a bit of a
- 4:25Speaker 3: mea culpa after the game. Because, remember, after they went
- 4:30Speaker 3: to Australia, folks kept asking, why did they do it
- 4:36Speaker 3: the way that they did?
- 4:38Speaker 4: Because, remember, they were really....
- 4:43Speaker 3: Really determined to do it how they wanted to do it,
- 4:47Speaker 3: which was to go out, whatever it was, 36 hours
- 4:50Speaker 3: before kickoff, spend one night there, play the game, get
- 4:55Speaker 3: on the plane, come back home. There'd been similar travel
- 4:59Speaker 3: things that had been cited in the past, including last
- 5:04Speaker 3: year when they went to London and play the Jaguars.
- 5:06Speaker 3: But there's big differences there. One, They had just played
- 5:10Speaker 3: a game in Baltimore, so they were still on the
- 5:12Speaker 3: East Coast. They stayed on the East Coast and practiced
- 5:15Speaker 3: until late in the week. Two, from Baltimore over there,
- 5:19Speaker 3: it was only about a five and a half hour
- 5:21Speaker 3: flight to there. It wasn't a 16-hour flight. And if
- 5:25Speaker 3: we're being completely honest, they're playing the Jaguars. They were
- 5:27Speaker 3: not playing the 49ers. So you had all of that
- 5:29Speaker 3: kind of stuff versus what they decided to do, which
- 5:33Speaker 3: was to go out 36 hours before you could tell
- 5:35Speaker 3: that just the They looked sluggish.
- 5:37Speaker 4: They looked out of position.
- 5:39Speaker 3: They jet lagged, as many called it. But the Rams
- 5:43Speaker 3: didn't really, and in specific, the head coach, Sean McVay,
- 5:48Speaker 3: didn't really own it that much afterwards. They were kind
- 5:50Speaker 3: of like, well, we just weren't ourselves. We didn't play well.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Credit the 49ers. We'll get back at it. And then
- 5:55Speaker 3: you heard all this stuff about putting it in the
- 5:56Speaker 3: rearview mirror. What was it McVay said? I never want
- 5:59Speaker 3: to go to Australia ever again. It was something like that.
- 6:01Speaker 3: He said, nothing against Australia. Just never want to play a.
- 6:03Speaker 4: Game there again.
- 6:04Speaker 3: So then last night, He was wrapping up his press
- 6:08Speaker 3: conference and was asked a different question about the response.
- 6:11Speaker 4: But listen to how he finishes this.
- 6:14Speaker 6: Yeah, I think, you know, sometimes you win, sometimes you learn.
- 6:18Speaker 7: And, you know, sometimes you have a dumbass coach that,
- 6:21Speaker 7: you know, makes travel plans that put you in a
- 6:23Speaker 7: bad spot.
- 6:25Speaker 6: There you go.
- 6:27Speaker 4: Everybody was laughing about that and was like, okay, he
- 6:29Speaker 4: owned it.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Sometimes you have a dumbass coach who makes travel plans
- 6:33Speaker 3: that put you in a bad spot.
- 6:35Speaker 4: He owned it.
- 6:36Speaker 3: That's part of the reason why I think a lot
- 6:37Speaker 3: of people like Sean McVay because he'll point the finger
- 6:40Speaker 3: at himself if it's not the only one.
- 6:42Speaker 4: And he'll do it in a way that it's, there are.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Coaches who can say, it's on me, it's on the coach,
- 6:49Speaker 3: and it sounds like they're saying what they're supposed.
- 6:52Speaker 4: To say as the head coach. And I get it.
- 6:56Speaker 3: Sean McVay's one of those guys who when he says
- 6:58Speaker 3: it like that, you believe that he believes it. That,
- 7:04Speaker 3: you know, that he's, thinking to himself, I screwed this
- 7:06Speaker 3: up by going out there. So we'll see. They did
- 7:10Speaker 3: look more like the Rams team that everybody's expecting this
- 7:12Speaker 3: year last night.
- 7:13Speaker 4: But it was a home game. Now they got to
- 7:15Speaker 4: go to Denver this week. We'll see.
- 7:18Speaker 3: And we'll see if Pukunuku is back, you know. But
- 7:20Speaker 3: there were a lot of injuries that come out, most notably,
- 7:22Speaker 3: of course, the Giants quarterback, Jackson Dart. We'll have more
- 7:24Speaker 3: on that coming up later this afternoon. There's several other,
- 7:28Speaker 3: Tyson Bajet is probably going to have to go at
- 7:31Speaker 3: quarterback for the Bears. You know, what with the injury
- 7:36Speaker 3: to Caleb Williams, although they don't think it's that serious,
- 7:39Speaker 3: at least not initially. I think the week two injury
- 7:44Speaker 3: report in the NFL is looking a little more extensive
- 7:48Speaker 3: than the week one injury report.
- 7:49Speaker 8: I think it's been a bad year for injuries in general.
- 7:52Speaker 8: It feels like you can say that every year in
- 7:53Speaker 8: the league, but I think there's been a lot of
- 7:55Speaker 8: high-profile injuries, particularly on the offensive side of the ball.
- 7:59Speaker 8: But as we'll get to, there's a few big defensive
- 8:01Speaker 8: injuries out there, too, that are piling up. But I
- 8:04Speaker 8: don't know the why behind that. There's a lot of
- 8:08Speaker 8: potential explanations, whether it's guys playing less in the preseason,
- 8:12Speaker 8: whether it's guys having less time to ramp up to
- 8:15Speaker 8: NFL action. But some of it is just year-to-year variance.
- 8:19Speaker 3: I think that it's almost, almost a can't-win situation. It's
- 8:27Speaker 3: a lose-lose proposition for NFL coaches. Here's what I mean
- 8:29Speaker 3: by this.
- 8:30Speaker 4: Sip of water.
- 8:34Speaker 3: If they play the guys in preseason and somebody suffers
- 8:37Speaker 3: a big injury, then they're just excoriated for what are
- 8:41Speaker 3: you doing playing the guys in preseason? What in the
- 8:45Speaker 3: world are you thinking? You're not thinking. How could you
- 8:48Speaker 3: do that?
- 8:49Speaker 4: But if you don't play them, then.
- 8:52Speaker 3: you can expect it to look a little more sluggish
- 8:56Speaker 3: out of the gate and more susceptible to injury if
- 8:59Speaker 3: they don't play in the preseason. And by the way,
- 9:02Speaker 3: that's another reason why the Rams.
- 9:03Speaker 4: Look so awful against the 49ers.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Nobody plays in the preseason that's going to be a
- 9:08Speaker 3: starter or expected to be a contributor. It's always been
- 9:11Speaker 3: that way for McVay, and that has been a winning formula,
- 9:15Speaker 3: but it didn't help. all the other issues they were
- 9:17Speaker 3: dealing with when they went to Australia, the fact that
- 9:20Speaker 3: they had guys, including Matthew Stafford, who did not play
- 9:23Speaker 3: in the preseason and who looked rusty. Stafford looked 38
- 9:27Speaker 3: against the 49ers. He looked 28 against the Giants last night.
- 9:32Speaker 9: So did Devontae Adams.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Yeah, he looked 25 instead of 35. So get a
- 9:38Speaker 3: game under Bell. And while, and again, I'm right there
- 9:43Speaker 3: at the head of the line that people think it
- 9:44Speaker 3: was a grievous mistake to go out when they did.
- 9:49Speaker 3: And at the time when we learned that they were
- 9:51Speaker 3: going to do it this way, I was kind of like, okay.
- 9:55Speaker 3: You know, as a fan, I'm like, I'm going to
- 9:59Speaker 3: trust the process. I'm going to trust the coach that
- 10:01Speaker 3: he knows what he's talking about because he's the coach.
- 10:03Speaker 3: He knows the team.
- 10:04Speaker 4: I don't. I've never been to Australia.
- 10:07Speaker 6: Fans trusting a coach?
- 10:08Speaker 4: What's that? Fans can do that? I try to be realistic.
- 10:11Speaker 4: I'm not always. Watch me during a Dodger game.
- 10:15Speaker 9: I was talking to some of our audience.
- 10:17Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I understand.
- 10:19Speaker 3: But I was like, I'm going to trust and all
- 10:22Speaker 3: this other kind of stuff.
- 10:23Speaker 4: And then it just looks like pig slop.
- 10:27Speaker 3: It looked awful. They looked awful. I'm like, it had
- 10:29Speaker 3: to be that. What a mess that is. But I
- 10:35Speaker 3: think coming out of that, having the extra time. Remember, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday.
- 10:42Speaker 3: It was 11 days in between games. It was kind
- 10:44Speaker 3: of almost like a bye when they came home. So
- 10:47Speaker 3: they got rested. They got their body clocks right. They
- 10:50Speaker 3: got in some good work, other than Nakua, who had
- 10:53Speaker 3: the injury. They got in some work. They got Aaron
- 10:56Speaker 3: Donald ready. And then it was like, okay. And then
- 10:59Speaker 3: they were anxious to get on the field and on
- 11:01Speaker 3: their home field to play a Giants team that lofty
- 11:04Speaker 3: things were being said about after the win of the Cowboys.
- 11:07Speaker 3: I mean, last night, even on the Monday Night Football,
- 11:11Speaker 3: on the predictions, was it they had seven people who picked,
- 11:15Speaker 3: four picked the Giants to win last night. So all
- 11:19Speaker 3: this stuff said, so they were properly prepared and ready
- 11:22Speaker 3: to go. And I think the Giants were too. They
- 11:23Speaker 3: just got overwhelmed by a better team. Plus the injury
- 11:26Speaker 3: to Dart took a lot of wind out of their sails.
- 11:29Speaker 3: No doubt about that. It hurt them. All right, coming up,
- 11:34Speaker 3: we've got a lot more to get to. We're going
- 11:36Speaker 3: to hear from Brian Schottenheimer, the Cowboys head coach. We're
- 11:40Speaker 3: going to hear from Longhorn players. We'll hear from Trevor Goosby.
- 11:43Speaker 3: We'll hear from Arch Manning. And we will also hear
- 11:46Speaker 3: from Longhorn's men's basketball coach, Sean Miller, who, you know,
- 11:52Speaker 3: practice got underway yesterday. This is a team that is,
- 11:56Speaker 3: at least in the early projections, picked to be a
- 11:58Speaker 3: top 10 team. So we'll see about all of that.
- 12:02Speaker 3: So we've got all that coming up and more right
- 12:04Speaker 3: here on a Tuesday afternoon on Sports Radio AM 13
- 12:06Speaker 3: Under the Zone and where you can always listen to
- 12:08Speaker 3: us for free. Oh, and by the way, we didn't forget,
- 12:11Speaker 3: we do have Inconceivable this hour as well. All that
- 12:13Speaker 3: coming up here on The Zone and on the iHeartRadio app.
- 12:32Speaker 3: It is a Texan Tuesday here on Sports Radio AM
- 12:36Speaker 3: 13 Under the Zone, which means certainly we hear from
- 12:43Speaker 3: some of the biggest legends in Texas music included in.
- 12:46Speaker 6: Our return cuts.
- 12:47Speaker 3: Included in, but not exclusive to, in the 4 o'clock hour,
- 12:52Speaker 3: the king, George Strait. In the 3 o'clock hour, the
- 12:55Speaker 3: iconic Willie Nelson. Here in the 2 o'clock hour, we
- 12:58Speaker 3: ring it in with the immortal Stevie Ray Vaughan.
- 13:03Speaker 8: And his first cut off the album Soul to Soul
- 13:05Speaker 8: titled Say What?
- 13:07Speaker 9: With an exclamation.
- 13:09Speaker 4: There's a lot of that over the weekend. Sure was.
- 13:11Speaker 4: Say what? Kentucky beat A & M in College Station?
- 13:18Speaker 4: Say what?
- 13:18Speaker 9: And beat them by two scores.
- 13:20Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah. There was one of them. Some.
- 13:27Speaker 3: Kind of grumbling and growling about the long words. They
- 13:29Speaker 3: only won by 24?
- 13:30Speaker 6: Oklahoma only won by eight?
- 13:32Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:33Speaker 3: 7-6 in the third quarter of that game.
- 13:38Speaker 4: Hey, it's the day and age of college football now.
- 13:42Speaker 4: Things change. There's a lot that's changed.
- 13:45Speaker 3: So the Longhorns right now are 3-0 and getting ready
- 13:47Speaker 3: to go to Knoxville, Tennessee to play the Tennessee Volunteers
- 13:51Speaker 3: in the state of Tennessee for the first time in
- 13:54Speaker 3: school history. They have three prior meetings with the Volunteers
- 13:57Speaker 3: all in the Cotton Bowl in 1951 and 1953. Texas
- 14:04Speaker 3: lost the first meeting. They had a 14-6 lead going
- 14:07Speaker 3: into the final quarter. That one ended up losing 20-14.
- 14:09Speaker 3: The next time out, they won 16-0. And then January 1st, 1969,
- 14:16Speaker 3: which capped the first season after the conversion to the
- 14:22Speaker 3: wishbone in the 1968 season when they lost a game
- 14:26Speaker 3: early and tied a game early and then got on
- 14:27Speaker 3: a roll. won the rest of them, including the Southwest
- 14:29Speaker 3: Conference title, and then beat Tennessee in the Cotton Bowl 36-13.
- 14:34Speaker 3: And it set the stage for the back-to-back national championship
- 14:38Speaker 3: seasons that followed in the 20-game winning streak in 1969
- 14:44Speaker 3: and 1970. So there's all of that. And now they
- 14:50Speaker 3: get ready to play at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville for
- 14:54Speaker 3: the first time ever. Trevor Goosby, anchor of that offensive front.
- 14:58Speaker 3: I was talking about thinking and asked, you know, we've
- 15:01Speaker 3: seen the running game at times look good with Hollywood
- 15:04Speaker 3: Smothers and Raleigh Brown. And then Derek Cooper got his
- 15:07Speaker 3: first touchdown as a long one last week. And then
- 15:09Speaker 3: times when it hasn't been consistent enough. So Goosby was
- 15:11Speaker 3: asked to evaluate the team's running game.
- 15:14Speaker 10: You know, I think we're in a good spot. You know,
- 15:16Speaker 10: I just think there's still more that we can do.
- 15:18Speaker 10: But that's always a good thing, you know, being able
- 15:20Speaker 10: to improve. And, you know, we just got to go
- 15:23Speaker 10: out and execute on the road.
- 15:25Speaker 3: Yeah, and the road means going to Knoxville. How about
- 15:27Speaker 3: the excitement level for that?
- 15:29Speaker 4: I'm super excited. You know, obviously, Neyland is an amazing stadium.
- 15:33Speaker 10: You know, obviously, Tennessee has great fans and, you know,
- 15:35Speaker 10: they always show up for their team.
- 15:37Speaker 4: So I'm super excited to go play Rocky Top. All right.
- 15:39Speaker 3: So you go to Rocky Top and what's the most
- 15:42Speaker 3: important thing a team needs to do and needs in
- 15:47Speaker 3: order to play well on the road?
- 15:49Speaker 10: I think just a sense of unity and understanding, like,
- 15:51Speaker 10: we're going into a hostile environment, especially Neyland Stadium, you know,
- 15:54Speaker 10: playing Tennessee. You know, we just have to have a
- 15:56Speaker 10: sense of unity and making sure that we're all on
- 15:58Speaker 10: the same page and just, you know, communication, especially up front.
- 16:01Speaker 3: Now, I mentioned that Dylan Sikorski is, or excuse me,
- 16:05Speaker 3: that Goosby is the anchor of the offensive front. They're
- 16:08Speaker 3: along with Connor Robertson at the senior spot there at
- 16:11Speaker 3: the center. But at left guard, they've had a pretty
- 16:13Speaker 3: good rotation over Dylan Sikorski. As a starter, Lawrence Seymour
- 16:17Speaker 3: getting snaps as well. And Goosby's asked, what is it
- 16:20Speaker 3: that we don't know about the junior transfer from Sumner, Washington,
- 16:25Speaker 3: by way of Oregon State, Dylan Sikorski?
- 16:28Speaker 10: Man, Dylan, I could talk all day about that guy, man.
- 16:30Speaker 10: He's an amazing person, first and foremost. And, you know,
- 16:33Speaker 10: he came in as a transfer, obviously. But he's bought
- 16:35Speaker 10: in super early. And, you know, he trusts what Flood
- 16:39Speaker 10: is doing. And he trusts the guys around him, you know,
- 16:41Speaker 10: Connor Robertson and I and, you know, Melvin and Baker.
- 16:44Speaker 10: You know, we're all just kind of super close. So
- 16:46Speaker 10: Dylan really bought into that. You know, I appreciate him
- 16:47Speaker 10: for that.
- 16:48Speaker 3: Yesterday was obviously the player availability. So it's early days
- 16:52Speaker 3: in terms of trying to evaluate the opponent on tape.
- 17:00Speaker 4: And the media asks anyway, you know, what do you think?
- 17:03Speaker 3: And so he was asked, you know, what about Tennessee's
- 17:06Speaker 3: defensive playmakers?
- 17:07Speaker 4: What he notices on video.
- 17:09Speaker 10: Definitely number six. Number six is, uh, he's definitely one
- 17:12Speaker 10: of their playmakers for sure. He, uh, he'll come downhill and,
- 17:15Speaker 10: you know, make some plays, um, him and then number
- 17:18Speaker 10: 22 as well.
- 17:19Speaker 4: Um, I think, uh, their DC has said easily.
- 17:22Speaker 10: You know, the heart and soul of the defense and,
- 17:23Speaker 10: you know, you don't become the heart and the soul
- 17:25Speaker 10: of it, you know, sec defense by, you know, playing mediocre.
- 17:27Speaker 4: So obviously those guys are, are really good for them.
- 17:30Speaker 8: All right.
- 17:30Speaker 4: Good points there.
- 17:31Speaker 3: Uh, we'll hear more from him a little later on and, uh,
- 17:34Speaker 3: we'll hear from Arch Manning coming up, uh, as well. Um,
- 17:38Speaker 3: Brian Schottenheimer, Cowboys head coach. Cowboys coming off that win
- 17:42Speaker 3: over the Washington Commanders. So they're one and one. And
- 17:44Speaker 3: now they go to Rio de Janeiro. They play the
- 17:50Speaker 3: Baltimore Ravens in Rio. I was invited. I was at
- 17:57Speaker 3: a gathering of some friends last Sunday. And the host
- 18:02Speaker 3: of the party included... A woman and her partner who
- 18:09Speaker 3: have this beautiful house out in Jonestown overlooking the lake.
- 18:13Speaker 3: But they also have a place that is right beside, gosh,
- 18:22Speaker 3: the beach.
- 18:23Speaker 4: It just went away out of my head there in Rio.
- 18:27Speaker 4: Not Ipanema. Anyway, and they have a place there.
- 18:36Speaker 9: Is it Copacabana Beach?
- 18:38Speaker 3: It might have been Copacabana. I thought about that, but
- 18:40Speaker 3: I was thinking it might have been a different one.
- 18:42Speaker 3: It might have been right off.
- 18:43Speaker 4: Of Copacabana Beach. I don't think it was that one.
- 18:46Speaker 8: Okay.
- 18:47Speaker 4: All right.
- 18:47Speaker 3: So anyway, but the point being, it was close to
- 18:49Speaker 3: the beach. It was like, hey, you should come down
- 18:51Speaker 3: and stay at our house down there and go to
- 18:53Speaker 3: the cowboy game and all that.
- 18:57Speaker 4: I'm not doing that.
- 18:58Speaker 3: I'll be coming home from Knoxville on Sunday.
- 19:02Speaker 4: But.
- 19:03Speaker 3: Um, Sean Iver was, was, uh, talking about the game
- 19:07Speaker 3: in Rio among, I think, first of all, how about
- 19:09Speaker 3: updates on the Marvian Overshawn and some of the other
- 19:11Speaker 3: banged up guys?
- 19:12Speaker 11: So the guys that have been doing the rehab, uh,
- 19:14Speaker 11: Dmo's doing good, make good progress. Uh, Malik Hooker, you know,
- 19:18Speaker 11: continues his rehab, uh, Kobe Durant and, uh, PJ Locke.
- 19:22Speaker 11: Kobe's got the hamstring strain and, uh, P, uh, PJ, uh,
- 19:26Speaker 11: you know, uh, toward the plantar fasciitis. plantar fasciitis in
- 19:31Speaker 11: his foot. And so both those guys could be a
- 19:33Speaker 11: few weeks.
- 19:34Speaker 3: One thing that Shadi was asked about, about the grass
- 19:38Speaker 3: in Rio, the grass they play on in Rio. And
- 19:43Speaker 3: did he have some concerns hearing some of the stuff
- 19:46Speaker 3: that had been said about the condition of the grass
- 19:48Speaker 3: in Rio?
- 19:48Speaker 4: I mean, no concerns, literally.
- 19:50Speaker 11: Just walking down here, Todd Williams came and saw me
- 19:53Speaker 11: and said, the NFL has people down there. They said,
- 19:56Speaker 11: we're going to be fine. Um, so I have zero
- 19:59Speaker 11: concerns about it. They've got people down there, eyes on it. So, um,
- 20:03Speaker 11: you know, we look forward to the trip.
- 20:05Speaker 8: All right.
- 20:06Speaker 3: And then, so that means also, uh, does the playing
- 20:10Speaker 3: surface impact what the decisions that he'll make about injured players?
- 20:15Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 20:16Speaker 11: Again, you know, I'm not saying that, you know, um,
- 20:19Speaker 11: until I put eyes on it, but everything that we're
- 20:21Speaker 11: hearing from the league, sounds like it's great.
- 20:23Speaker 4: Okay. He mentioned about P.J.
- 20:26Speaker 3: Locke, the Lifetime Longhorn, had a tear of the plantar fascia. Now,
- 20:35Speaker 3: did you hear who it was that asked him the question?
- 20:38Speaker 4: I don't know if it was Todd Archer. Somebody asked.
- 20:41Speaker 6: This might have been Clarence Hill.
- 20:44Speaker 3: Yes, I think it might have been. Might have been Chills.
- 20:48Speaker 3: Clarence Hill asking Schottenheimer that he had heard that it's
- 20:54Speaker 3: better to just go ahead and have the full tear
- 20:58Speaker 3: of the plantar fascia instead of the partial tear. And
- 21:01Speaker 3: he was asking for Schottenheimer's thoughts on that. That is correct.
- 21:05Speaker 3: You and I are both learning about doctor stuff. But yeah,
- 21:09Speaker 3: they say it's better. It's pretty sore for a week.
- 21:12Speaker 3: And then it begins to heal much quicker when you
- 21:14Speaker 3: tear it fully.
- 21:15Speaker 4: Okay.
- 21:16Speaker 11: Okay.
- 21:17Speaker 4: Strange though it may be.
- 21:18Speaker 3: And then strange, Todd Archer was asking him about how
- 21:23Speaker 3: strange it is to have an international week for signing
- 21:27Speaker 3: players and then getting them acclimated and ready for the trip.
- 21:30Speaker 4: Weird week this week.
- 21:32Speaker 6: If you sign somebody, they need a passport, a visa.
- 21:35Speaker 4: Can you kind of do all that stuff still? Or
- 21:37Speaker 4: are you kind of locked in the Dallas Cowboys, man?
- 21:39Speaker 4: We can do it.
- 21:42Speaker 11: We know people. We can do whatever we got to do.
- 21:47Speaker 11: I mean, might be a Brazilian citizen. I mean, who knows?
- 21:50Speaker 4: Okay.
- 21:53Speaker 9: He knows how to get that room going.
- 21:56Speaker 4: We're the Cowboys, man. We can do what we got
- 21:58Speaker 4: to do.
- 21:58Speaker 6: Amazing what a win will do.
- 22:00Speaker 8: Amazing what coaches will sound like in a press conference
- 22:02Speaker 8: after they get to face Washington.
- 22:04Speaker 3: He stops just short of saying we can do whatever
- 22:06Speaker 3: we want. He didn't say that. But he said we
- 22:09Speaker 3: can do what we need to do to do that.
- 22:12Speaker 3: So we'll see. Speaking of quarterbacks, as we were early
- 22:17Speaker 3: with all the injuries that are going on with quarterbacks,
- 22:20Speaker 3: the Jets made a roster move.
- 22:23Speaker 4: Remember Will Levis?
- 22:24Speaker 9: Oh, yeah.
- 22:25Speaker 3: Signed him to the practice squad. And he had worked
- 22:29Speaker 3: out for the Jets before week one. He was 5-16
- 22:32Speaker 3: as the Tennessee Titans.
- 22:34Speaker 4: Starter in 23-24.
- 22:36Speaker 3: Missed all of last year due to a shoulder surgery,
- 22:39Speaker 3: second-round pick back in 2023. And in a corresponding move,
- 22:44Speaker 3: the Jets released, remember Bailey Zappi, the guy from Western Kentucky?
- 22:50Speaker 3: He had nine career starts. He was released for the
- 22:53Speaker 3: practice squad. And, of course, Geno Smith and, yes, Cade
- 22:57Speaker 3: Klubnick are on the active roster. So if something were
- 23:02Speaker 3: to happen to Geno, yeah, you'd see Geno. Plumnik, the
- 23:04Speaker 3: one-time Westlake Chaparral being there. Levis became available when he
- 23:08Speaker 3: was cut by the Titans at the end of the preseason.
- 23:10Speaker 3: They decided to go with Cam Ward, obviously, as a starter,
- 23:13Speaker 3: and then Mitchell Trubisky as their top two quarterbacks because.
- 23:19Speaker 4: Some folks still see some things in Mitchell Trubisky as well.
- 23:24Speaker 4: So there we go. In the NBA, important to.
- 23:27Speaker 3: Mention this, this whole drama and everything has been going
- 23:31Speaker 3: on with Kawhi Leonard and That trade from the Clippers
- 23:36Speaker 3: to the Raptors and the Clippers' ownership and management being
- 23:41Speaker 3: hauled up before the magistrate and suspended and fined and
- 23:46Speaker 3: draft picks docked and all that kind of stuff. The
- 23:49Speaker 3: one guy who wasn't punished for all of this was
- 23:52Speaker 3: Kawhi Leonard.
- 23:53Speaker 4: He didn't get... punitively assessed by the league.
- 23:57Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 23:58Speaker 8: And it's interesting. I was listening to a few different
- 24:00Speaker 8: perspectives on it. It sounds like there's the widely held
- 24:04Speaker 8: belief is that he was willing to come to the
- 24:06Speaker 8: table and cooperate on this as was the players association
- 24:10Speaker 8: in a way that maybe the Clippers side wasn't.
- 24:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 24:13Speaker 3: So the deal is now done between the Clippers and
- 24:18Speaker 3: the Raptors. And Leonard today has agreed to a two
- 24:22Speaker 3: year $ 115 million contract to go back to Toronto and
- 24:29Speaker 3: that's a contract extension plus a player option for 2028-2029
- 24:32Speaker 3: so he took $ 11 million less than the maximum extension
- 24:34Speaker 3: number on top of waiving the.
- 24:35Speaker 4: $ 7, 450, 000.
- 24:36Speaker 3: Trade kicker to accommodate that trade from the Clippers so
- 24:39Speaker 3: because of what's going on with the Raptors' salary books
- 24:56Speaker 3: and things of that nature. So it was back on
- 24:59Speaker 3: June 30th when the Raptors and the Clippers agreed on
- 25:02Speaker 3: that trade with Kawhi going back to Toronto for Brandon Ingram,
- 25:07Speaker 3: Grady Dick, two unprotected first-round picks, one first-round pick swap,
- 25:12Speaker 3: and two second-rounders.
- 25:14Speaker 4: So the deal was placed.
- 25:15Speaker 3: On pause when the NBA had that you know, investigation
- 25:20Speaker 3: going on because they informed the Raptors in July that
- 25:23Speaker 3: they would be liable for any discipline for Leonard, you know,
- 25:29Speaker 3: amid the investigation. So they just held off until the
- 25:33Speaker 3: league said, no, he's all right.
- 25:35Speaker 4: He's cleared. It's good to go.
- 25:36Speaker 3: So, I mean, meanwhile, the Clippers get hit with the
- 25:39Speaker 3: loss of five future first round picks, a $ 30 million fine,
- 25:45Speaker 3: And in a year-long suspension for the owner, Steve Ballmer,
- 25:49Speaker 3: for violating that salary cap circumvention, Leonard was paid $ 700, 000
- 25:56Speaker 3: in restitution, or he paid $ 700, 000 in restitution for improper
- 26:01Speaker 3: benefits provided by the franchise for his uncle and his
- 26:04Speaker 3: former business representative.
- 26:05Speaker 4: Dennis Robertson.
- 26:06Speaker 3: He had to pay that money back, which he did.
- 26:09Speaker 3: And Leonard also fired Robertson. And his agent, Mitch Frankel
- 26:13Speaker 3: and Juney, hired... this new agent Harrison Gaines of Slash Sports.
- 26:20Speaker 3: He hired him as his new agent weeks later, and
- 26:23Speaker 3: Robertson's been banned by the NBA from all business dealings.
- 26:28Speaker 4: So there's some NBA for you.
- 26:29Speaker 3: All right, coming up next, Inconceivable on a Tuesday afternoon
- 26:32Speaker 3: here on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone and
- 26:35Speaker 3: the iHeartRadio app. Second hour of the program here on
- 26:38Speaker 3: Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone. Craig Way alongside
- 26:41Speaker 3: the producer, Jay Kerman. We'll be with you up until
- 26:43Speaker 3: 5 o'clock this afternoon. More NFL sound coming up here momentarily.
- 26:48Speaker 3: Also more from the Longhorns and a couple other college
- 26:51Speaker 3: and pro football notes.
- 26:53Speaker 4: And we'll hear a little bit from Longhorns basketball coach,
- 26:57Speaker 4: Sean Miller. Practice began.
- 27:00Speaker 3: Listen, I said that for some folks who think that, wow,
- 27:06Speaker 3: we're talking about college basketball here in just the backside
- 27:11Speaker 3: of the middle part of the month of September here,
- 27:13Speaker 3: headed toward late September, today being the first day of autumn.
- 27:18Speaker 3: And I know it didn't feel like it outside. You know,
- 27:22Speaker 3: to be talking about college basketball, maybe that seems a
- 27:25Speaker 3: little weird to you. I'll see that and raise you
- 27:29Speaker 3: What Sports Illustrated used to call the sign, another sign
- 27:33Speaker 3: that the apocalypse is on us. Seeing highlights of NHL
- 27:38Speaker 3: exhibition games on SportsCenter and in their top 10.
- 27:42Speaker 5: Wow.
- 27:42Speaker 3: That seems really, I first saw it Saturday night while
- 27:46Speaker 3: doing the post game. For the long words, there was
- 27:49Speaker 3: scores flashing along the bottom. Jets won, Islanders won, third period.
- 27:54Speaker 4: You know, I'm like, what? Bruins two, Maple Leafs one, final. Yeah. Now,
- 28:03Speaker 4: as a fan of the reigning Stanley Cup champions who
- 28:06Speaker 4: opened defense of their championship, I'm not as put off
- 28:09Speaker 4: by it since the Carolina Hurricanes will try to.
- 28:11Speaker 3: Defend that cup. But he's weird, don't you think? I mean,
- 28:14Speaker 3: even you followed and worked in the hockey world for
- 28:17Speaker 3: a bit.
- 28:17Speaker 8: You know, preseason hockey, Craig, is a bit of a snooze.
- 28:20Speaker 8: I hate to admit it. I'm not a preseason fan.
- 28:23Speaker 4: Of much.
- 28:23Speaker 8: I always enjoy seeing how a pitcher looks in spring training.
- 28:26Speaker 8: Maybe that's just the baseball nerd in me. But the
- 28:28Speaker 8: Capitals did something cool last night. They played up in
- 28:30Speaker 8: Hershey at the AHL Arena, I believe against Philadelphia, and
- 28:33Speaker 8: they sold the place out, which was a really cool
- 28:35Speaker 8: atmosphere for preseason.
- 28:36Speaker 3: I like that very much. Okay, also, coming up in
- 28:39Speaker 3: just a few minutes, Greg Tepper. Editor-in-Chief Dave Campbell's Texas
- 28:42Speaker 3: Football Magazine, our weekly look at college football and high
- 28:48Speaker 3: school football in the Lone Star State. But let's jump
- 28:50Speaker 3: back to the NFL, coming off that Cowboys victory, and
- 28:52Speaker 3: Brian Schottenheimer, the head coach, was asked about things, and
- 28:57Speaker 3: among those, Don Vaneziraku, and how he can turn the
- 29:00Speaker 3: pressure that he's getting on quarterbacks these days into more
- 29:04Speaker 3: in the sack category.
- 29:06Speaker 11: Well, that is the million dollar question, but I will
- 29:10Speaker 11: say I thought our pass rush was really, it really
- 29:13Speaker 11: was terrific last night.
- 29:14Speaker 4: We had these guys moving all over the place.
- 29:17Speaker 11: Again, it's the last two QBs we've played and including
- 29:21Speaker 11: Lamar this week, they're nifty guys. um but really it's
- 29:24Speaker 11: more just you know when you when you get near
- 29:26Speaker 11: them being able to wrap them up you know part
- 29:28Speaker 11: of what we're doing is we're you know getting close
- 29:31Speaker 11: we're trying to attack.
- 29:31Speaker 4: The ball as well but if you can't get to
- 29:34Speaker 4: the ball we just got to be a.
- 29:34Speaker 11: Little bit better at finishing those things up and again
- 29:38Speaker 11: it's every guy doing his job so if you know
- 29:40Speaker 11: if we win you know winning the rush off the
- 29:43Speaker 11: off the left side of the offense you know we
- 29:45Speaker 11: got to make sure we've got the quarterbacks contained because
- 29:47Speaker 11: where they're kind of hurting us right now is stepping
- 29:50Speaker 11: up in and out so they're going north and south
- 29:52Speaker 11: first and then getting out and.
- 29:54Speaker 4: So we got to close some of the seams.
- 29:57Speaker 3: Next, that lack of sacks the Cowboys have not been
- 30:01Speaker 3: able to accrue of late. Is that due to the
- 30:04Speaker 3: quarterback's face? And by the way, how does that dovetail
- 30:07Speaker 3: into having to deal with Lamar Jackson this Sunday in Rio?
- 30:11Speaker 4: Yeah, well, it's certainly got something to do with the quarterback.
- 30:14Speaker 11: It certainly means that we have to do a better job,
- 30:17Speaker 11: like I said, of finishing and wrapping guys up. And
- 30:19Speaker 11: a couple of times we've been getting a little high
- 30:23Speaker 11: on the guy rather than getting the legs. But these
- 30:26Speaker 11: quarterbacks that we've had to face these first couple weeks
- 30:29Speaker 11: are very, very athletic. But I believe that these things
- 30:34Speaker 11: do come in bunches. And if you're close, it means
- 30:37Speaker 11: you have a chance. And if you can finish a
- 30:39Speaker 11: couple of those things, that would be tremendous for us
- 30:40Speaker 11: because talk about some of our struggles on third down.
- 30:44Speaker 11: A couple of those have been really good rushes that
- 30:46Speaker 11: we just haven't been able to finish, and the quarterbacks
- 30:48Speaker 11: have either scrambled for big plays like Jaden did last
- 30:51Speaker 11: game or found some people open late.
- 30:55Speaker 4: But I'd rather be.
- 30:56Speaker 11: Around the quarterback than not around the quarterback, but we
- 30:59Speaker 11: definitely have to finish better.
- 31:02Speaker 3: Since we're still on the subject of the defense, coaches
- 31:06Speaker 3: always like to talk about things that can clean up.
- 31:08Speaker 3: We need to clean up some things. We've got to
- 31:11Speaker 3: get into the cleaning up thing. What can his defense
- 31:14Speaker 3: clean up from the win over the commanders on Sunday?
- 31:17Speaker 4: Yeah, I would say, obviously, our run defense.
- 31:20Speaker 11: You know, I still think that there's some things we
- 31:22Speaker 11: got to do from a running game, you know, containing
- 31:24Speaker 11: the quarterback. I thought, you know, White hurt us some
- 31:27Speaker 11: with a couple things.
- 31:27Speaker 4: You know.
- 31:30Speaker 11: We're going to play a team this week that's very,
- 31:32Speaker 11: very good running the football, both with Derrick Henry and
- 31:34Speaker 11: with Lamar. We're going to see runs. I would run
- 31:40Speaker 11: against this. So we've got to be better. We've got
- 31:43Speaker 11: to set edges better. I thought there was some steps
- 31:46Speaker 11: in the right direction, but I think you can see
- 31:49Speaker 11: that if we can get people behind the sticks, we
- 31:52Speaker 11: have the ability to rush the passer, but you've got
- 31:55Speaker 11: to get people behind the sticks, and that starts with
- 31:57Speaker 11: run defense.
- 32:00Speaker 12: All right.
- 32:00Speaker 3: So, uh, PJ Locke being banged up, uh, Siobhan Ravel, uh, how,
- 32:06Speaker 3: how is he going to be? Oh, and is he
- 32:08Speaker 3: ready to go? And how prepared is he to step
- 32:11Speaker 3: into that position? No, he's definitely ready. Um, working really,
- 32:14Speaker 3: really hard.
- 32:15Speaker 11: I do think he played, you know, uh, well in
- 32:18Speaker 11: the game, you know, they, uh, they tried them immediately,
- 32:21Speaker 11: which that's part of the deal of being a young corner.
- 32:23Speaker 11: You know, they went right after him. Um, you know,
- 32:25Speaker 11: I think it was the army Brown, right, right down
- 32:27Speaker 11: our sideline. And, Um, the next time they came back
- 32:30Speaker 11: and they were going to try the same thing and, um,
- 32:32Speaker 11: you know, it was him on, uh, McLaurin and his
- 32:35Speaker 11: technique was, was excellent, outstanding, just the way we teach it.
- 32:40Speaker 11: And so every, every rep he plays, Nick, he gets better,
- 32:43Speaker 11: better and better. And, um, you know, it's good for
- 32:46Speaker 11: his confidence.
- 32:48Speaker 3: Next, the thoughts about Marquise Bell having to step in, uh,
- 32:51Speaker 3: formerly cookers out with the surgery and how that's all going.
- 32:56Speaker 4: Same thing.
- 32:58Speaker 11: Here's a guy that wasn't planning on playing a whole
- 33:00Speaker 11: lot and went in there and got forced into duty
- 33:03Speaker 11: when P.J. went down and was mentally ready and did
- 33:07Speaker 11: a good job in communication. That's the benefit of having
- 33:11Speaker 11: that deep safety class and a veteran like that that
- 33:14Speaker 11: understands the defense even though he doesn't usually get a
- 33:18Speaker 11: ton of reps in terms of what we're doing. He's
- 33:21Speaker 11: getting more reps and walkthroughs and things like that, but
- 33:24Speaker 11: veterans generally can do that and certainly the good ones.
- 33:27Speaker 3: And one more defensive question, talking about trying to be
- 33:30Speaker 3: better on tape defensively from.
- 33:33Speaker 4: Week one to week two and week two now to
- 33:36Speaker 4: on coming to week three. Yeah, I thought the communication
- 33:38Speaker 4: was better. I really did.
- 33:39Speaker 11: Again, I thought Jay Sean did a terrific job with
- 33:42Speaker 11: the green dot.
- 33:42Speaker 4: I was really proud of him.
- 33:43Speaker 11: You know, I think, you know, he played well, got
- 33:46Speaker 11: the forced fumble.
- 33:47Speaker 4: That was great.
- 33:48Speaker 11: But, you know, and like I said, I wasn't surprised
- 33:52Speaker 11: that the communication was better, but I would start there.
- 33:55Speaker 3: All right, and we'll hear more from Shadi coming up
- 33:58Speaker 3: next hour. But up next, we turn to college football
- 34:02Speaker 3: and high school football, specifically in the state of Texas.
- 34:06Speaker 3: The editor-in-chief of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, Greg Tepper,
- 34:09Speaker 3: joins us for our weekly Tuesdays with Tep installment. That's
- 34:13Speaker 3: next here on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone
- 34:15Speaker 3: on the iHeartRadio app.
- 34:18Speaker 1: I am following the river down the highway through the
- 34:22Speaker 1: cradle of.
- 34:23Speaker 3: The Civil War. Some prefer the Paul Simon version. But
- 34:37Speaker 3: it's hard to say Willie Nelson's ever done a bad
- 34:40Speaker 3: version of anything, including going to Graceland there. Of course,
- 34:44Speaker 3: we hear from the iconic Willie Nelson at 3 o'clock
- 34:46Speaker 3: hour every Tuesday. And on this Texan Tuesday in the
- 34:51Speaker 3: 3 o'clock hour, we visit with Greg Tepper, the editor-in-chief
- 34:53Speaker 3: of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, who the impression I
- 34:58Speaker 3: got from you, Tepp, between over the weekend and what
- 35:01Speaker 3: we've done this week, is that you are definitely ensconced.
- 35:08Speaker 3: Not only are we knee-deep into the football season now
- 35:11Speaker 3: with the NFL two weeks in, and obviously what's happened
- 35:13Speaker 3: with college football and high school football, all this stuff
- 35:18Speaker 3: kind of comes at you in a tidal wave right now,
- 35:19Speaker 3: a rush with it, with everything you got, your daily responsibilities,
- 35:22Speaker 3: calling your game on Friday night, all this kind of stuff, right?
- 35:27Speaker 6: Yeah, it comes in waves, right?
- 35:32Speaker 13: One of the things that I think is fun and
- 35:35Speaker 13: also terrifying about this job is that there's almost no
- 35:39Speaker 13: opportunity to sit back and reflect on what you just saw.
- 35:43Speaker 13: Because now, that time has become truncated. Basically, by Tuesday morning,
- 35:50Speaker 13: you need to be on to the next week because
- 35:52Speaker 13: it's coming fast and furious. We got games on Thursday.
- 35:54Speaker 13: whether it's in the college ranks or the high school
- 35:56Speaker 13: ranks coming. So you've got to get all your stuff done,
- 36:00Speaker 13: get all of it out of your system by Monday,
- 36:02Speaker 13: because then on Tuesday, it's got to be on to
- 36:04Speaker 13: the next one. It just comes fast and furious. And
- 36:07Speaker 13: especially when you're covering the state holistically from widespread, any
- 36:13Speaker 13: opportunity to sit back and look back too far, I
- 36:17Speaker 13: think you're losing time.
- 36:20Speaker 6: Because there's so much on the horizon that's coming.
- 36:23Speaker 13: You've got to be moving forward even when you're looking back.
- 36:26Speaker 4: Here's where.
- 36:29Speaker 3: I am reminded weekly of the scope and the expanse
- 36:33Speaker 3: of the state of Texas. And I know you would
- 36:35Speaker 3: appreciate this because sometimes you catch part of our broadcasts,
- 36:40Speaker 3: the Texas Longhorn broadcast. And one of the things that,
- 36:43Speaker 3: and we started this a few years ago with our
- 36:45Speaker 3: studio anchor, because here's a little bit of inside stuff
- 36:48Speaker 3: behind the curtain stuff. Our studio anchor is not in
- 36:50Speaker 3: the state of Texas. He's in the state of North Carolina.
- 36:53Speaker 3: That's where the network studios are, where it all goes
- 36:56Speaker 3: into that. So we have a new studio anchor this year,
- 36:59Speaker 3: and Jeff Marson, who's really sharp and for years had
- 37:02Speaker 3: been the studio anchor for Mississippi State.
- 37:04Speaker 4: So he knows the SEC inside out. He's very, very
- 37:06Speaker 4: good on that.
- 37:07Speaker 3: But he needed a little bit of education on some
- 37:11Speaker 3: of the other colleges in the state of Texas. And
- 37:14Speaker 3: I started doing this even with the guy we had
- 37:16Speaker 3: before him, who had been the Vanderbilt studio anchor before
- 37:20Speaker 3: he was ours. And that was to acquaint them on
- 37:23Speaker 3: the large scale of scope of colleges and college football
- 37:28Speaker 3: programs in the state of Texas. This was an idea
- 37:30Speaker 3: I got once when I was driving from Manhattan, Kansas,
- 37:34Speaker 3: back to Kansas City after Texas had a day game
- 37:37Speaker 3: at K-State. And I'm listening to their scoreboard show. And
- 37:40Speaker 3: that dude is knee-deep in JUCO scores. Because, you know,
- 37:44Speaker 3: JUCOs are big in Kansas. Yeah, Butler County, Cloud, all
- 37:49Speaker 3: of those, Coffeyville, all those. And so I got to thinking,
- 37:53Speaker 3: I thought, you know, we don't have to go to
- 37:54Speaker 3: the JUCO level, like Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine dives
- 37:58Speaker 3: that deep into it. However, we could do at least
- 38:02Speaker 3: the Division II and Division III in addition to the
- 38:04Speaker 3: FBS and FCS scores. So what I then drew up
- 38:09Speaker 3: the following week, and we've done it ever since, is
- 38:13Speaker 3: to have like a scoreboard thing, and it's usually like
- 38:16Speaker 3: the last one he does, like in the case of
- 38:19Speaker 3: the other night, pretty late in the evening, and we're
- 38:21Speaker 3: still waiting to visit with Sark, or we just finished
- 38:25Speaker 3: with him, and we were done with the player interviews.
- 38:27Speaker 4: We've got a couple more segments we've got to fill.
- 38:29Speaker 3: So what I do is I have him do all
- 38:32Speaker 3: the SEC score. Well, in the state of Texas, there's
- 38:36Speaker 3: only one other SEC team. You'll recap what happened with
- 38:38Speaker 3: A & M, which was a doozy last Saturday. Then
- 38:41Speaker 3: the other P4s, in that case, the Big 12 with TCU, Baylor,
- 38:44Speaker 3: and Tech, the ACC with SMU. Then I have him
- 38:47Speaker 3: go to the other FBS G6 schools, so the other
- 38:54Speaker 3: American conference schools. And then beyond that, then I have
- 38:59Speaker 3: him go FCS, so we go Southland Conference, and then
- 39:02Speaker 3: United Athletic Conference.
- 39:04Speaker 4: Him do that. then Division II with Lone Star Conference.
- 39:08Speaker 3: And by the time he gets down to Division III
- 39:10Speaker 3: and he's doing American Southwest and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association,
- 39:14Speaker 3: some folks may be saying.
- 39:17Speaker 4: Where exactly is Schreiner?
- 39:19Speaker 3: Where exactly is Southwestern University?
- 39:22Speaker 4: That kind of thing.
- 39:23Speaker 3: But that's always a weekly reminder of the scope because
- 39:26Speaker 3: there's college football going on at all levels in this state.
- 39:29Speaker 5: Wow.
- 39:30Speaker 13: So fascinating to me is that basically as you were
- 39:32Speaker 13: going through that, you took a tour of our magazine.
- 39:35Speaker 13: Like that is exactly, if you go and you look
- 39:38Speaker 13: at the way that our magazine is laid out, we start,
- 39:40Speaker 13: it used to be forever and ever, we started with
- 39:42Speaker 13: the Southwest Conference. Then Southwest Conference goes by the wayside,
- 39:45Speaker 13: the Big 12 became the conference of record in the state.
- 39:48Speaker 13: And now we start with the SEC. The SEC is
- 39:50Speaker 13: the biggest conference that the Texas team's playing. We do
- 39:53Speaker 13: that one, move on to the Big 12, et cetera.
- 39:55Speaker 13: You actually flow perfectly through the magazine, but you're right.
- 39:59Speaker 6: Like that's the thing.
- 40:00Speaker 13: There's now, I think like one of the things whenever
- 40:02Speaker 13: I do like, I'll do like some public speaking. One
- 40:06Speaker 13: of the things I'll lead with is I think people
- 40:08Speaker 13: know it's like 1,500 high schools across the state. I'll
- 40:11Speaker 13: tell people there's 50 colleges, college football teams in Texas,
- 40:14Speaker 13: and that catches them almost.
- 40:15Speaker 6: More by surprise.
- 40:16Speaker 13: Because I think that they are thinking of Texas and
- 40:19Speaker 13: A & M, and maybe they're thinking of Texas State, right?
- 40:22Speaker 6: Or they're thinking of UTEP.
- 40:24Speaker 13: But they're probably not thinking of Southwestern Assemblies of God.
- 40:27Speaker 13: They're probably not thinking of UTRGV. And by the way,
- 40:31Speaker 13: that's to say that it's a pretty good year.
- 40:34Speaker 6: In the non-FPS ranks in Texas right now.
- 40:38Speaker 13: You've got two top 10 FCS teams in Tarleton and
- 40:40Speaker 13: SFA already. who have looked fantastic to start the year.
- 40:48Speaker 13: You go on the Division II level, you've got UT
- 40:50Speaker 13: Permian Basin and Midwestern State are off to really nice
- 40:52Speaker 13: starts as well. It's a good year in non-FPS, and
- 40:56Speaker 13: it's one of those things that in my job, you
- 41:02Speaker 13: almost get more, I think it's the same way with
- 41:03Speaker 13: high school, you get more gratification the deeper you go
- 41:07Speaker 13: because you realize, oh wait, there's good ball down here.
- 41:10Speaker 13: If you're a 6A fan, Go watch some 3A ball
- 41:13Speaker 13: and you'll be like, man, there's some really good football teams. Yeah,
- 41:15Speaker 13: there's not as many guys on the sideline, but there's
- 41:17Speaker 13: some really good football teams. That, I think, is probably
- 41:20Speaker 13: the magic and probably just what doesn't happen in any
- 41:23Speaker 13: other state and probably why our state is so singular.
- 41:27Speaker 4: Yeah, no doubt.
- 41:28Speaker 3: And while the magazine probably does a little deeper dive,
- 41:30Speaker 3: for example.
- 41:31Speaker 4: You probably... won't hear.
- 41:34Speaker 3: Our studio anchor give too many Texas college scores, not
- 41:37Speaker 3: too much NAIA stuff. And by the way, there's a
- 41:41Speaker 3: new name, isn't it, for the old Southwestern Assemblies of
- 41:44Speaker 3: God College?
- 41:45Speaker 4: It's a one-person name.
- 41:46Speaker 13: Oh, did they change their name to Texas Wesleyan?
- 41:51Speaker 4: No, there's another one. It's a person's name.
- 41:55Speaker 9: Nelson.
- 41:55Speaker 4: That's it.
- 41:56Speaker 6: Nelson. Thank you. That's right.
- 41:58Speaker 5: That's it.
- 41:59Speaker 6: Got to update my memory.
- 42:00Speaker 4: That's right.
- 42:01Speaker 3: Located right there in the heart of Ellis County. But
- 42:05Speaker 3: from other levels, obviously, we strive to do that. Same
- 42:08Speaker 3: thing that you guys do. And that is inclusive of
- 42:10Speaker 3: your Texas Power Poll, that college football power poll that
- 42:17Speaker 3: you and the staff and Mike Craven all put together
- 42:19Speaker 3: each week and do this. And I noticed the drop
- 42:22Speaker 3: of Texas A & M down there to the number
- 42:25Speaker 3: four slot. How about your thoughts on the Aggies last week?
- 42:29Speaker 13: I did one of my least favorite things on Saturday
- 42:33Speaker 13: in the fourth quarter of that game against Kentucky, which
- 42:36Speaker 13: is that I texted Mike Craven and said, you were
- 42:39Speaker 13: absolutely right. Because, and he took it with the amount
- 42:43Speaker 13: of stride that you think Mike Craven took it with.
- 42:46Speaker 13: Because even if you go back and you read what
- 42:49Speaker 13: he wrote after their win over Arizona State, he... He more,
- 42:55Speaker 13: and even though they won comfortably, won by like three
- 42:58Speaker 13: touchdowns in that game, he pointed out, he goes there,
- 43:02Speaker 13: he's like, something's rotten here.
- 43:03Speaker 6: Like there's something going on.
- 43:05Speaker 13: And he kind of targeted the offense and specifically Marcel Reed.
- 43:09Speaker 13: and just said, right now he's not carrying his weight.
- 43:13Speaker 13: They're getting away with it because the defense swore some turnovers.
- 43:16Speaker 13: They're getting away with it because they're making some plays
- 43:19Speaker 13: in special teams and winning field position battles and stuff
- 43:21Speaker 13: like that.
- 43:22Speaker 6: And you can win like that.
- 43:23Speaker 13: He goes, but basically, he kind of said, he's like,
- 43:26Speaker 13: time's going to run out if he doesn't kind of
- 43:27Speaker 13: take that step.
- 43:28Speaker 6: And time ran out last week. And basically, Kentucky... Didn't turn.
- 43:32Speaker 4: The ball over.
- 43:32Speaker 13: Like, Kentucky was the aggressor on defense, and Kentucky put
- 43:36Speaker 13: them in a position where they made Marcel Reed put
- 43:39Speaker 13: the ball up. And he was just inaccurate, plain and simple.
- 43:43Speaker 13: And that's kind of been the knock on him. He
- 43:45Speaker 13: can't make the throws consistently. That he makes some dazzling plays.
- 43:49Speaker 13: but he can't make those throws consistently. I think that
- 43:51Speaker 13: was all of A & M' s worst fears kind of
- 43:54Speaker 13: come to fruition there. I thought the defense played okay.
- 43:59Speaker 13: I thought they were put in some tough spots because
- 44:01Speaker 13: of some turnovers as well as because of some field
- 44:06Speaker 13: position issues. But I thought the defense played okay, but
- 44:09Speaker 13: the offense is in a tough way right now.
- 44:11Speaker 6: It's a bad way.
- 44:12Speaker 13: And by the way, It's not like the schedule gets
- 44:16Speaker 13: any easier, considering they go this weekend to what has
- 44:20Speaker 13: to be a frippy, upset LSU team on the road
- 44:24Speaker 13: to Death Valley. There's at least six teams on their
- 44:28Speaker 13: schedule that are as good or better than Kentucky. And
- 44:31Speaker 13: if they're not beating Kentucky at home as, what.
- 44:33Speaker 6: 18-point favorites, then it could be a long season for
- 44:36Speaker 6: the Aggies.
- 44:37Speaker 4: Yeah, it's an angry LSU team.
- 44:42Speaker 3: As we visit with Greg Tepper, of Dave Campbell's Texas
- 44:46Speaker 3: Football Magazine. And the other one, I wanted to get
- 44:48Speaker 3: your thoughts on SMU. I mean, it's been said about,
- 44:51Speaker 3: you know, SMU that had a shot to get in
- 44:54Speaker 3: the playoff, and maybe they still do. They still have
- 44:56Speaker 3: to deal with Miami. They've still got some other big games.
- 44:58Speaker 3: But it definitely was a sting. It definitely hurt them
- 45:02Speaker 3: taking a step back with that loss at Louisville.
- 45:05Speaker 13: Yeah, I mean, look, it's one of those things where
- 45:09Speaker 13: on the road against a good nationally ranked Louisville team.
- 45:13Speaker 6: If you guys didn't know, Louisville's pretty good.
- 45:16Speaker 13: They went toe-to-toe with them, and they went play-for-play with them.
- 45:20Speaker 13: But in the end, what ended up costing them is
- 45:24Speaker 13: that they just turned the ball over too much.
- 45:27Speaker 6: You know what I mean?
- 45:29Speaker 13: You can't be like that on the road and do that.
- 45:33Speaker 6: They were minus three in turnover margin. You can't be
- 45:36Speaker 6: like that.
- 45:37Speaker 13: And there are a couple of throws that Kevin Jennings
- 45:40Speaker 13: is going to want back.
- 45:41Speaker 6: And that's kind of what turned the game. I'm not
- 45:43Speaker 6: here to bury SMU.
- 45:44Speaker 13: I think that they went on the road and played
- 45:46Speaker 13: a tough team and they came up short. There were
- 45:50Speaker 13: a couple of things that they need to do a
- 45:52Speaker 13: little bit better. I think they need to run the
- 45:54Speaker 13: ball a little bit better, more consistently, if they're going
- 45:56Speaker 13: to get where they want to go. Look, this is a,
- 45:59Speaker 13: you know, although I thought that Kendrick Raphael had a
- 46:01Speaker 13: nice game, they just need to shake it off and
- 46:05Speaker 13: not let, there's one of those things where don't let
- 46:07Speaker 13: one game beat you twice.
- 46:09Speaker 6: That's one of the things that I keep coming back to.
- 46:11Speaker 13: If they are able to, you know, with the way
- 46:13Speaker 13: that college football is now, you can take a loss
- 46:16Speaker 13: and you can still be in the mix, especially.
- 46:18Speaker 6: A ranked loss on the road in a competitive game.
- 46:22Speaker 13: SMU is still in it, but their margin just got smaller.
- 46:25Speaker 6: Their margin just shrunk and they can't afford one more
- 46:29Speaker 6: of those. That's the thing. And you'd rather that you
- 46:31Speaker 6: lose your margin.
- 46:32Speaker 13: In week 10 as opposed to week three because But
- 46:35Speaker 13: such as the breaks there on the hilltop, they've got
- 46:37Speaker 13: to come home and regroup and make sure they don't
- 46:39Speaker 13: let something like that happen again.
- 46:41Speaker 3: All right, let's move to the high school ranks. Here's
- 46:43Speaker 3: the well-worn-out question. Is DeSoto back?
- 46:48Speaker 13: Yeah, you know, here's the thing about DeSoto, and I'm
- 46:51Speaker 13: going to sound like a broken record here about the Eagles,
- 46:53Speaker 13: because they go and they get a win over a
- 46:55Speaker 13: previously unbeaten Burleson Centennial team. I think they are better
- 46:58Speaker 13: than Burleson Centennial. That's not necessarily surprising. Their defense was really,
- 47:04Speaker 13: really good in this game. They were able to bottle
- 47:06Speaker 13: up Burleson Centennial and especially reduce them to essentially not
- 47:10Speaker 13: being able to run the ball.
- 47:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 47:13Speaker 13: They, the issues for me and where I like, again,
- 47:17Speaker 13: I hold DeSoto to an extremely high standard.
- 47:19Speaker 6: They've won three titles in the last four years.
- 47:20Speaker 13: So when we talk about is DeSoto back, the question
- 47:22Speaker 13: is not, are they going to make the playoffs? Yes,
- 47:24Speaker 13: they're going to make the playoffs. Are they, my question is,
- 47:27Speaker 13: can they win a state championship? And my concerns for
- 47:30Speaker 13: them continue to be that offensively, they're really one dimensional.
- 47:34Speaker 6: They cannot throw the ball consistently.
- 47:36Speaker 13: I mean, their leading passer in this game was Sir
- 47:40Speaker 13: Rod Baker.
- 47:42Speaker 6: He threw the ball. He went eight for 10. Pretty
- 47:44Speaker 6: good passer.
- 47:45Speaker 13: Turns out having one of the best players in Texas
- 47:47Speaker 13: high school football is great. The problem is he's playing
- 47:49Speaker 13: out of position. And that's not a long-term solution, in
- 47:52Speaker 13: my opinion. And that's not something that they can do.
- 47:55Speaker 6: They need to.
- 47:55Speaker 13: Find a way to get the ball out on the
- 47:57Speaker 13: edge and make it so that they're not stacking the box.
- 48:03Speaker 13: Having Theroux Baker is fantastic. They are going to need
- 48:05Speaker 13: to find another element to that offense to get where
- 48:08Speaker 13: they want to go. Because, by the way, I know
- 48:10Speaker 13: we've all talked about them dropping down and, oh, wow,
- 48:14Speaker 13: look how.
- 48:15Speaker 6: Good they are.
- 48:16Speaker 4: I will just tell you this.
- 48:17Speaker 13: Take a look at 5A Division I and look at
- 48:19Speaker 13: the other teams in that classification. Smithson Valley has looked spectacular.
- 48:25Speaker 13: Richmond Randall, 3-0. Frisco Lone Star, really strong. Port Arthur Memorial. Angleton,
- 48:31Speaker 13: I think, is flying under the radar. I think this idea,
- 48:33Speaker 13: I will say this, I'm ready to now say four
- 48:36Speaker 13: games in that, yes, I think DeSoto is certainly on
- 48:39Speaker 13: that short list of teams that can win a state championship.
- 48:41Speaker 13: But any thought that they were a prohibitive favorite in
- 48:44Speaker 13: 5A Division I, I think has gone out the window.
- 48:46Speaker 3: Yeah, I look at Smithson Valley, and you know me,
- 48:49Speaker 3: I'm a Dodger fan. I kind of look at them
- 48:50Speaker 3: like I did the Dodgers in June, a two-time defending
- 48:53Speaker 3: champ who looks every bit the part. Now, the Dodgers
- 48:55Speaker 3: had a horrible August, and they're kind of recovering themselves.
- 48:58Speaker 3: So we'll see what happens with Smithson going forward. But
- 49:02Speaker 3: Larry Hill's got it rolling, and there's no reason to
- 49:04Speaker 3: think they won't be a contender and maybe coming out
- 49:06Speaker 3: of Region IV, be in that championship game yet again.
- 49:10Speaker 13: I think we take them for granted just because they're
- 49:13Speaker 13: not flashy. It's a very Larry Hill coach ball club.
- 49:16Speaker 13: They're not flashy. Now, they are flashier than they have been.
- 49:19Speaker 13: Ty Knutson, their quarterback, the Texas commit, is a star,
- 49:23Speaker 13: I think. They have a legit blue chipper at the
- 49:24Speaker 13: quarterback spot. Hunter Haug, their Texas Tech commit, in the
- 49:28Speaker 13: first half last week, had a 40-yard touchdown catch and
- 49:32Speaker 13: three defensive touchdowns.
- 49:34Speaker 6: In the first half against Porter Maynard. Yeah. They're legit.
- 49:38Speaker 13: And I think that that Smithson Valley, maybe it's just
- 49:41Speaker 13: because they're in the San Antonio area and San Antonio
- 49:43Speaker 13: has been been relatively down the past decade or so
- 49:46Speaker 13: kind of from a statewide perspective. But man, like, like,
- 49:50Speaker 13: take the scales off your eyes as far as Smithson
- 49:52Speaker 13: Valley is concerned, because they are. and if you've forgotten
- 49:55Speaker 13: about them, they're the guys with the 5A Division I crown.
- 49:59Speaker 13: Just because there's another team there that has a 6A
- 50:01Speaker 13: crown doesn't mean that they got the one.
- 50:02Speaker 4: The Smiths and Valleys got.
- 50:04Speaker 3: Let me also say this, and it may not be
- 50:06Speaker 3: a popular opinion in these parts, and I want to
- 50:08Speaker 3: make sure I'm clear in saying this. I'm not saying
- 50:11Speaker 3: there's a quote-unquote changing of the guard in 6A in
- 50:15Speaker 3: the greater Austin area.
- 50:16Speaker 4: I will say this.
- 50:18Speaker 3: Um, you know, Westlake does not look as dominant as
- 50:21Speaker 3: they have been in the past.
- 50:22Speaker 4: Lake Travis comes off losing to Cornerstone.
- 50:24Speaker 3: Uh, and I just, last Friday night, it was a
- 50:27Speaker 3: marvelous ball game at six lead changes, but Round Rock
- 50:30Speaker 3: did emerge with the win at Vandegrift.
- 50:33Speaker 4: I'm not saying Round Rock's better on them.
- 50:34Speaker 3: And by the way, Round Rock will get a chance
- 50:36Speaker 3: to prove itself because they're now in the same district
- 50:38Speaker 3: with Westlake and Lake Travis. But, um, Maybe between that
- 50:43Speaker 3: and an unbeaten Cedar Ridge, maybe we're starting to see
- 50:45Speaker 3: a little.
- 50:46Speaker 4: More balance out in 6A in these parts.
- 50:49Speaker 13: I like to think about gaps, right? Okay, and so
- 50:51Speaker 13: for a long time, we talked about the gap between
- 50:53Speaker 13: Austin and San Antonio, that Austin's just had San Antonio's number,
- 50:56Speaker 13: plain and simple.
- 50:58Speaker 6: I think that gap is closing.
- 51:00Speaker 13: I think part of it is that Austin's maybe falling
- 51:02Speaker 13: back to the pack and San Antonio is on the rise.
- 51:04Speaker 13: Teams like Johnson have been really, really good, a team
- 51:07Speaker 13: that I think is a legit state championship contender. The
- 51:10Speaker 13: other thing is that I think that that gap between
- 51:13Speaker 13: that upper, upper, upper crust, the Lake Travis, the Westlake,
- 51:17Speaker 13: the Vandegrift, I think that gap has narrowed because I
- 51:21Speaker 13: think that this, what you would call probably, again, I
- 51:24Speaker 13: don't mean this disrespectfully, but the middle class of high
- 51:27Speaker 13: school football in Austin is rising up. Round Rock, you
- 51:32Speaker 13: mentioned that. Cedar Ridge has been fantastic. There's a lot
- 51:35Speaker 13: of good football teams in the Austin area that if
- 51:39Speaker 13: you are only paying attention to the big brand names,
- 51:43Speaker 13: then you might end up being shocked on a Friday
- 51:45Speaker 13: night whenever Round Rock goes and beats Vandergrift. Those are
- 51:48Speaker 13: the types of things that I'm looking at. And I
- 51:49Speaker 13: think that gap between the tier one and tier two,
- 51:53Speaker 13: call it, I think that gap has closed, which should
- 51:56Speaker 13: make for a real dynamite district season and some real
- 52:00Speaker 13: fun playoff chases going as we get into when it
- 52:03Speaker 13: hopefully starts cooling down.
- 52:04Speaker 3: All right, on to the meanest thing we do each week.
- 52:07Speaker 3: I give you three games, and it'll be different. Now,
- 52:11Speaker 3: you've got a Corker this week. You've got North Shore
- 52:13Speaker 3: and Tascosita. So that's removed from the equation here. But
- 52:17Speaker 3: I've got three others, and you give me your choice.
- 52:20Speaker 3: If you couldn't be there for North Shore and Tascosita,
- 52:23Speaker 3: which of these three would you teleport to?
- 52:27Speaker 4: Uh.
- 52:28Speaker 3: How about down there at Freedom Field for Angleton, Iowa Colony?
- 52:32Speaker 3: I have, this one I think could be really a
- 52:36Speaker 3: lot of fun. Bernie at Alamo Heights. And then the
- 52:40Speaker 3: other one, my old pal Rodney Vinson doing it up
- 52:43Speaker 3: with Shallow Water. And they're unbeaten and they've got Idlew
- 52:45Speaker 3: this week. Which of these do you like?
- 52:47Speaker 13: Man, that's really what I wish you hadn't put in,
- 52:50Speaker 13: Idlew-Shallow Water. Because that game's going to be great. I think,
- 52:53Speaker 13: first of all, I think Shallow Water's really strong. Idaloo
- 52:57Speaker 13: might be a team you need to upgrade your priors on.
- 53:00Speaker 13: I think Idaloo's really, really good. And the games in
- 53:04Speaker 13: Shallow Water should be a fantastic ballgame out there. Fascinated
- 53:09Speaker 13: by the Angleton game because Angleton, again, kind of doing
- 53:12Speaker 13: the Angleton team thing very quietly off to a 4-0 start.
- 53:16Speaker 13: They play District 11 5A D1 play. Richmond Randall will
- 53:20Speaker 13: loom for both of these teams. But I'm going to
- 53:22Speaker 13: keep my powder dry for that one because I want
- 53:24Speaker 13: to keep– when Randall and Angleton rolls around, I'm really
- 53:27Speaker 13: interested in that one.
- 53:28Speaker 6: I'm going to go with Bernie and Alamo Heights.
- 53:30Speaker 13: It's a District 13 5A Division II opener between two
- 53:33Speaker 13: state-ranked unbeaten teams. Um, Bernie beat Alamo Heights twice last year,
- 53:39Speaker 13: and there is a chance. I think the winner of
- 53:41Speaker 13: this game is the district is the early favorite to
- 53:43Speaker 13: be district champion. And therefore we'll be at least on
- 53:46Speaker 13: the very short list of being regional champion.
- 53:48Speaker 6: And again, one of those, one of these games where
- 53:50Speaker 6: it wouldn't be.
- 53:50Speaker 13: A surprise if we saw it twice. I love Grant
- 53:53Speaker 13: Sweeney at the quarterback spot for, for Bernie. Can he
- 53:56Speaker 13: put it up against a really good defense there from
- 53:58Speaker 13: Alamo Heights? Uh, that that's my, I think that's my
- 54:01Speaker 13: game of the week is, is Bernie and Alamo Heights.
- 54:03Speaker 4: That's a good call.
- 54:04Speaker 3: He's Greg Tepper, editor-in-chief of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. TexasFootball.com
- 54:10Speaker 3: is where you can go to subscribe to get all
- 54:11Speaker 3: the great content and be able to watch them in action.
- 54:15Speaker 4: Call North Shore to ask Casita.
- 54:17Speaker 3: On Friday night, plus all the other games they have
- 54:19Speaker 3: coming in through Texan Live and their telecast. Hey, appreciate it.
- 54:23Speaker 3: Have a lot of fun this week, even as busy
- 54:25Speaker 3: as it all is.
- 54:27Speaker 6: It's a lot, but it's a good kind of a lot.
- 54:29Speaker 6: You know what I mean? Better than digging ditches.
- 54:31Speaker 4: No doubt about it. Thanks, Tepper. All right.
- 54:33Speaker 3: That's our Tuesdays with Tepper segment. We have more coming
- 54:36Speaker 3: up on 13 Under the Zone.
- 54:42Speaker 6: Driving baseline.
- 54:44Speaker 4: Works it back around into the corner. Sinks the shoot
- 54:46Speaker 4: in the corner. Cam Heide at three. Good! It's good!
- 54:51Speaker 4: 14 seconds to go. Texas up four.
- 54:54Speaker 5: Into the frontcourt.
- 54:55Speaker 6: St.
- 54:55Speaker 4: Saberi launches a long three.
- 54:57Speaker 6: Short.
- 54:58Speaker 4: Off the rim. Rebound Texas.
- 55:00Speaker 12: It's going to happen, folks. It is going to happen.
- 55:03Speaker 12: Modest focus. Heides lays it in. That'll do it. An
- 55:08Speaker 12: 11 seed has crashed the Sweet 16 party.
- 55:12Speaker 4: It's the Texas Longhorns.
- 55:14Speaker 12: Final score, Texas 74, Gonzaga 68, San Jose. The next
- 55:21Speaker 12: stop on this Longhorn postseason saga.
- 55:25Speaker 4: We're back.
- 55:26Speaker 13: It's the Craig Way Show with Hall of Fame broadcaster
- 55:29Speaker 13: and voice of the Texas Longhorns, Craig Way.
- 55:34Speaker 3: Doesn't seem like it's been that long ago, and then
- 55:36Speaker 3: at the same time, it seems like it's been about
- 55:37Speaker 3: six months, right, since the Longhorn basketball team reached the
- 55:40Speaker 3: Sweet 16 in Sean Miller's first season. Cam Heide with
- 55:43Speaker 3: a big three in the corner leading the way for Texas,
- 55:47Speaker 3: getting the victory, the upset over Gonzaga, and then getting
- 55:50Speaker 3: there into the Sweet 16 and took Purdue to the
- 55:52Speaker 3: wire before falling there by a point. So that happened,
- 55:57Speaker 3: and yesterday was the first day of practice with a
- 56:02Speaker 3: almost completely remade roster, the only returning starter being Modest Vocantitis.
- 56:06Speaker 3: Sean Miller had a press conference yesterday talking about it.
- 56:08Speaker 3: First of all, let's get his opening thoughts on this.
- 56:11Speaker 7: You know, in some ways it feels like a long,
- 56:12Speaker 7: long time ago that basketball season was up and running.
- 56:16Speaker 4: We're playing Purdue and.
- 56:17Speaker 7: San Jose, and all that is now a distant memory.
- 56:23Speaker 7: In another way, it feels like it just happened a
- 56:25Speaker 7: couple weeks ago.
- 56:26Speaker 4: But here we are again.
- 56:28Speaker 7: I'm very excited about our season that lies ahead.
- 56:33Speaker 4: For a couple reasons.
- 56:34Speaker 7: I think that what happened last spring gave a lot
- 56:38Speaker 7: of momentum to our program moving forward. So much of
- 56:42Speaker 7: our game is about what happens in the month of March,
- 56:45Speaker 7: and we had a lot of great things happen to
- 56:47Speaker 7: us by the way we played a year ago in
- 56:50Speaker 7: the tournament. And I think that set a healthy tone
- 56:53Speaker 7: for this spring, this past spring and summer leading into
- 56:56Speaker 7: where we are today. But I love the group of
- 56:59Speaker 7: guys that we have. I think we have a lot
- 57:02Speaker 7: of good elements. I think the two things that really
- 57:05Speaker 7: strike out is, or that are striking for me versus
- 57:09Speaker 7: where we would have been a year ago is just
- 57:11Speaker 7: our overall depth as a team is significantly greater. And
- 57:16Speaker 7: I also think the size of our team with that depth,
- 57:21Speaker 7: you know, the same. And I think those are two
- 57:24Speaker 7: really good attributes to have in college basketball, depth and size.
- 57:28Speaker 7: And now it's up to us to, to take advantage.
- 57:31Speaker 7: Today is day one for us, meaning we have 30
- 57:35Speaker 7: practices in the next 42 days. And today is day
- 57:39Speaker 7: one of those 30 practices. So we're excited to get started.
- 57:44Speaker 3: Miller was then in the Q & A portion of
- 57:46Speaker 3: the press conference asked, starting off, what are the areas
- 57:50Speaker 3: in specific where he feels confident that his team, even
- 57:54Speaker 3: here in late September, is better than they were a
- 57:57Speaker 3: year ago?
- 57:58Speaker 7: My hope is that we really achieve that we're better
- 58:02Speaker 7: in every phase, in every area. I don't think it'll
- 58:05Speaker 7: be that way on day one, but I do think
- 58:07Speaker 7: we have the ability to just be.
- 58:09Speaker 4: Overall better across the board.
- 58:12Speaker 7: Modest, as you guys know, if you followed his progression
- 58:15Speaker 7: a year ago, how he would have started in the
- 58:17Speaker 7: month of November and where he ended in March, he
- 58:20Speaker 7: made a huge jump during the season. And every year,
- 58:24Speaker 7: program wants players that are playing to make the rise
- 58:27Speaker 7: that Modest made a year ago.
- 58:29Speaker 4: But it's difficult.
- 58:30Speaker 7: A lot of times you see the progress in an
- 58:32Speaker 7: offseason where they add something to their game or physically
- 58:36Speaker 7: they grow and get bigger and stronger. And you really
- 58:38Speaker 7: see it the following year. Modest's progression really happened in
- 58:42Speaker 7: the 30 plus games that we played last season. So
- 58:46Speaker 7: it's been interesting following him. He's had a great offseason.
- 58:49Speaker 7: As you guys know, he's a really hard worker, loves
- 58:52Speaker 7: the game. really pours into what he does. And I
- 58:56Speaker 7: think the one thing that I would answer just about
- 58:58Speaker 7: your question is I think he'll pick up where he
- 59:01Speaker 7: left off. I'd be surprised if he didn't. He's smarter
- 59:04Speaker 7: with his fouling. I think you'll see it right away.
- 59:08Speaker 7: He moves better.
- 59:10Speaker 4: Defensively.
- 59:10Speaker 7: He just knows what to do in an easier way.
- 59:13Speaker 7: And then offensively, as you guys know, he's such a
- 59:16Speaker 7: weapon because it's difficult to defend him without fouling. And
- 59:21Speaker 7: I think he's added to that, his repertoire, putting more
- 59:25Speaker 7: tools in his toolbox. And I look at him as
- 59:28Speaker 7: being one of the best front court players in the country.
- 59:32Speaker 4: And one more question for me.
- 59:33Speaker 3: It was about the investment that the athletic department and
- 59:38Speaker 3: the donors have had in the basketball program and the
- 59:41Speaker 3: impact of getting to the sweet 16, how that might've
- 59:44Speaker 3: all been affected by this.
- 59:45Speaker 7: Well, like I said, you know, I think March, you know, it's, we,
- 59:49Speaker 7: we can accept it as coaches in college basketball or
- 59:52Speaker 7: try to fight it, but you know, March madness is,
- 59:55Speaker 7: it's what it's about, you know, Number one, it's very
- 59:57Speaker 7: difficult to be a part of March Madness.
- 59:59Speaker 4: I don't think anybody can.
- 1:00:01Speaker 7: Truly understate just the importance of being in it. And
- 1:00:05Speaker 7: by the way, the parity in the game and how
- 1:00:08Speaker 7: difficult it is just to be a part of it.
- 1:00:10Speaker 7: And then, yeah, being a part of it's exciting, but
- 1:00:12Speaker 7: can you advance? And I think the word momentum comes
- 1:00:15Speaker 7: in a lot of forms, one of which is what
- 1:00:17Speaker 7: you're alluding to. But look, being here at the University
- 1:00:20Speaker 7: of Texas, it's about excellence and And it's a high
- 1:00:24Speaker 7: expectation environment for all of us, coaches, players, teams, programs.
- 1:00:29Speaker 7: But it's also, as I've been here in the year
- 1:00:32Speaker 7: and a half that I've been here, it's also high support,
- 1:00:36Speaker 7: high investment. I was at the football game, all three actually,
- 1:00:40Speaker 7: but the Ohio State game, I've never been at a
- 1:00:43Speaker 7: game like that where things aren't necessarily going well throughout
- 1:00:47Speaker 7: the game. And yet over 100,000 people remain intact, stay
- 1:00:51Speaker 7: in the stadium and And what happened in the fourth
- 1:00:54Speaker 7: quarter is just, to me, it's a lasting memory for
- 1:00:58Speaker 7: all of us. If you were there, it's like you'll
- 1:01:00Speaker 7: never forget how that felt.
- 1:01:02Speaker 4: And that's football.
- 1:01:03Speaker 7: But the next day I went to the volleyball game
- 1:01:05Speaker 7: and I watched Jarrett's team, who's gotten off to a
- 1:01:08Speaker 7: slower start because of these injuries, and especially the one injury.
- 1:01:12Speaker 7: And there's 10,000 people at that game on a Sunday morning.
- 1:01:16Speaker 7: My point being, this is a place that's second to
- 1:01:20Speaker 7: none when it comes to the leadership, the investment, You know,
- 1:01:23Speaker 7: I think we all as coaches call it Team Texas,
- 1:01:26Speaker 7: pull for each other. And no doubt we've had great
- 1:01:29Speaker 7: support to put us in a position to compete for
- 1:01:32Speaker 7: in our sport, the top prize, the top prize in
- 1:01:35Speaker 7: our league and then beyond. And it takes an investment
- 1:01:38Speaker 7: both on and off the court to make that happen.
- 1:01:40Speaker 7: And we have great support here.
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: We'll obviously hear some more from Sean Miller as we
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: draw closer to the start of the season, which is
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: just around the corner. but practice is underway on the
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: UT campus. All right, we have more coming up. We'll
- 1:01:56Speaker 3: be back to wrap up our number two here on
- 1:01:59Speaker 3: Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:02:07Speaker 3: Third and final hour of the program here on Sports
- 1:02:09Speaker 3: Radio AM 13 Under the Zone. Craig Wade, joined by
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: the producer, Jake Herman. Glad to have you with us
- 1:02:14Speaker 3: here for another hour. Up until five o'clock, we've talked
- 1:02:20Speaker 3: some NFL. We're going to have some more here in
- 1:02:21Speaker 3: a moment. We have discussed the Texas Longhorns. We're going
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: to have some more sound from them coming up here
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: in just a few moments. So there's plenty to get
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: to coming off the completion of the second full week
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: in the National Football League.
- 1:02:42Speaker 4: So the second week is in the books.
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: And as a result, because all of this stuff happens,
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: as you know, very, very quickly, The brand new power
- 1:02:53Speaker 3: rankings are out for the NFL. So going in inverse order,
- 1:02:58Speaker 3: tell me if any of these ranking spots surprise you.
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: Number 32, Miami Dolphins.
- 1:03:05Speaker 4: Not surprised. Yeah, 0-2.
- 1:03:06Speaker 3: Number 31, Atlanta Falcons.
- 1:03:08Speaker 9: Also not surprised. That's the worst offense in the league
- 1:03:10Speaker 9: so far.
- 1:03:11Speaker 4: Yeah, and Thursday night they're going to play Green Bay.
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: Last night on the Manning cast when they had Andrew
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: Whitworth on the fourth quarter, they were talking about the
- 1:03:19Speaker 3: game he's got Thursday night on prime. With the Packers
- 1:03:22Speaker 3: and Falcons, and they're like, Peyton's like, yeah, that's going
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: to be difficult.
- 1:03:26Speaker 9: Do we get an early appearance for Groggy Owl?
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: Yeah, that's possible.
- 1:03:33Speaker 9: Not Groggy, but disgruntled.
- 1:03:34Speaker 4: Yeah, disgruntled. Number 30, Tennessee 0-2.
- 1:03:38Speaker 8: Yeah, I'd be surprised if they win more than four games.
- 1:03:45Speaker 3: Number 20, excuse me.
- 1:03:47Speaker 4: Number 29.
- 1:03:47Speaker 9: He's choking just thinking about this team.
- 1:03:49Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely. Number 29, the 1-1 Cleveland Browns. Okay.
- 1:03:53Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:03:55Speaker 8: Not a huge bump for Cleveland after winning that rain-delayed
- 1:03:59Speaker 8: game in Tampa Bay.
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: One of their comments is, one thing we know about
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: the QB1, Deshaun Watson found a risk-averse winning formula. Earned
- 1:04:07Speaker 3: his first win since September 2024 with the lowest average
- 1:04:12Speaker 3: depth of target of his career, 3.7. In fact, on
- 1:04:16Speaker 3: all of these, I guess I should have left this
- 1:04:18Speaker 3: in there, they add the line about what we know.
- 1:04:21Speaker 4: About the QB1.
- 1:04:22Speaker 3: For Miami, Malik Willis is still developing and needs more help.
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: For Atlanta, the Falcons are desperate for Michael Penix Jr. Yeah,
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: he's supposed to be back on Thursday, so look forward
- 1:04:33Speaker 3: to that. For the Titans, Cam Ward will run the
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: ball more this season. And then I mentioned Cleveland. Deshaun
- 1:04:40Speaker 3: Watson found a risk-averse winning formula. Number 28, your 0-2
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: Washington Commanders.
- 1:04:45Speaker 4: Fair.
- 1:04:46Speaker 9: Tough, but fair.
- 1:04:47Speaker 4: One thing we know about the QB1, Jane Daniels can't
- 1:04:49Speaker 4: stay healthy.
- 1:04:51Speaker 9: Not recently.
- 1:04:52Speaker 4: Yeah. I hate that.
- 1:04:53Speaker 9: I hate that for him.
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: Number 27, the 1-1 Jets. One thing we know about
- 1:04:58Speaker 3: the quarterback, look, no interceptions for Geno Smith. They said
- 1:05:02Speaker 3: this is notable because he threw a league-high interception, 17
- 1:05:06Speaker 3: interceptions last season with the Raiders. He's making smart decisions
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: with the ball for the most part, not a single
- 1:05:11Speaker 3: turnover and 74 dropbacks. He's completing nearly 71% of his passes,
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: though he's only averaging 5.8 air yards per attempt, tied
- 1:05:20Speaker 3: with Daniel Jones for 28th in the league. Number 26,
- 1:05:23Speaker 3: the 1-1 Arizona Cardinals. One thing we know about QB1,
- 1:05:28Speaker 3: Jacoby Brissett should be just fine.
- 1:05:31Speaker 4: Okay. Number 25, the 1-1 Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 1:05:37Speaker 9: Yeah, this is about accurate.
- 1:05:39Speaker 8: I've seen a lot of people too high on the Steelers,
- 1:05:41Speaker 8: so I'm happy they're down in the bottom seven here.
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: One thing we know about the QB1, Aaron Rodgers is
- 1:05:46Speaker 3: no longer comfortable under pressure. That's because their offensive line
- 1:05:50Speaker 3: is Swiss cheese. I mean, the guys are— what was the
- 1:05:52Speaker 3: line I heard? I stole it from one of the
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: recap shows. I'm going to use it in a broadcast
- 1:06:01Speaker 3: I know somewhere. is that the offensive line, or they
- 1:06:05Speaker 3: were talking about a specific offensive lineman that said, was
- 1:06:08Speaker 3: a turnstile.
- 1:06:09Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:06:09Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:06:10Speaker 9: I like turnstile, traffic cone.
- 1:06:12Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, that's another one as well. Okay, number 24,
- 1:06:16Speaker 3: the Colts, 0-2. One thing we know, Daniel Jones' Achilles
- 1:06:22Speaker 3: injury is not impeding him. Number 23, the 0-2 Buccaneers.
- 1:06:27Speaker 3: Baker Mayfield is fully healthy, but something is not right.
- 1:06:31Speaker 3: Number 22... The 0-2 Chargers. Justin Herbert looks uncomfortable.
- 1:06:36Speaker 8: Yeah, I heard a fantasy football podcast I like compare
- 1:06:41Speaker 8: him to that really nice set of stereo equipment at
- 1:06:45Speaker 8: your buddy's house. And he swears it sounds perfect when
- 1:06:48Speaker 8: it's all done right, but he's fiddling with it constantly,
- 1:06:50Speaker 8: and it's never perfect.
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: Yeah, there you go. Number 21, the 1-1 Panthers. Bryce
- 1:06:56Speaker 3: Young isn't afraid to throw it deep.
- 1:06:59Speaker 4: Number 20?
- 1:06:59Speaker 9: That one jumps out to me. Too low.
- 1:07:01Speaker 8: I believe in this Carolina team.
- 1:07:03Speaker 9: I think they'll climb.
- 1:07:04Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:07:04Speaker 3: At number 20 is the lowest ranked 2-0 team, the Raiders.
- 1:07:09Speaker 9: Yeah, the Panthers should be ahead of them.
- 1:07:10Speaker 3: One thing we know about QB1, Kirk Cousins can handle
- 1:07:13Speaker 3: pressure well. Let me tell you something. On my fantasy team,
- 1:07:16Speaker 3: and I didn't even play him, he's like lighting it up.
- 1:07:21Speaker 3: So he's doing really well. And he said, why didn't
- 1:07:23Speaker 3: you play him? Because I got Dak Prescott and I've
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: got Patrick Mahomes.
- 1:07:28Speaker 9: Say hello to my little friends.
- 1:07:29Speaker 4: All right. Number 19, the 1-1 Saints.
- 1:07:32Speaker 3: One thing we know about the quarterback, Tyler Shuck can
- 1:07:35Speaker 3: handle the big moments, but he needs to start faster.
- 1:07:37Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:07:39Speaker 3: Number 18, the Giants at 1-1. It's all about Jackson
- 1:07:44Speaker 3: Dart staying on the field.
- 1:07:46Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:07:47Speaker 3: Number 17, 1-1 Packers. One thing we know about the quarterback,
- 1:07:52Speaker 3: Jordan Love is getting hit a lot. He's taken 18
- 1:07:55Speaker 3: hits and sacked four times.
- 1:07:57Speaker 9: Their O-line is struggling. Struggling in front of him.
- 1:08:01Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:08:01Speaker 3: Number 16, the one-and-one Cowboys. One thing we know about
- 1:08:04Speaker 3: the quarterback, the Cowboys will go as far as Dak
- 1:08:06Speaker 3: Prescott can take them. It says there have been and
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: will be growing pains with the defense, so a lot
- 1:08:11Speaker 3: will be on Prescott's plate. The run game has not
- 1:08:14Speaker 3: been what the Cowboys have wanted so far either. Through
- 1:08:17Speaker 3: two games, Prescott is completing 73.8% of his passes, and
- 1:08:20Speaker 3: he has been able to escape harm with his legs, too.
- 1:08:24Speaker 3: He has six touchdown passes and one interception, but the
- 1:08:28Speaker 3: one giveaway shows the Cowboys' thin.
- 1:08:30Speaker 4: Margin for error.
- 1:08:31Speaker 3: The Giants turned that into a touchdown to shift the
- 1:08:33Speaker 3: momentum in Dallas' week one loss. Todd Archer wrote that.
- 1:08:36Speaker 3: And we'll hear some more. We've already heard from Brian Schottenheimer.
- 1:08:38Speaker 3: We'll hear some more coming up later on this hour.
- 1:08:41Speaker 3: Number 15, how about the 0-2 Texans being ahead of
- 1:08:44Speaker 3: the 1-1 Cowboys?
- 1:08:46Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:08:46Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 1:08:47Speaker 8: I look at if you're, if your priors on a
- 1:08:49Speaker 8: team were so high, two weeks should not be able
- 1:08:52Speaker 8: to change them unless you've got catastrophic injuries. And even
- 1:08:55Speaker 8: though the Texans have had injuries at the wide receiver position,
- 1:08:59Speaker 8: you can't change your takers. on the Texans just because
- 1:09:01Speaker 8: they couldn't score in the red zone this week just
- 1:09:03Speaker 8: because Josh Allen made the defense look exposed in week
- 1:09:06Speaker 8: one they had that game right there.
- 1:09:08Speaker 3: Uh the one thing we know about the quarterback CJ
- 1:09:12Speaker 3: Stroud just needs a healthy supporting cast talk about Nico
- 1:09:15Speaker 3: Collins missing the game and you know the other injuries
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: they've had Number 14, the one-in-one Lions. Jared Goff continues
- 1:09:23Speaker 3: to build a case as the greatest quarterback in franchise history.
- 1:09:27Speaker 4: Okay, whatever.
- 1:09:30Speaker 9: Competing with who on that? Dante Culpepper?
- 1:09:33Speaker 4: Stafford.
- 1:09:34Speaker 8: Well, but think about what Stafford did with the Lions
- 1:09:37Speaker 8: and start comparing that to golf. Then you see a
- 1:09:39Speaker 8: little bit of a closer comp.
- 1:09:40Speaker 4: Okay, so what has golf done with the Lions?
- 1:09:44Speaker 8: Well, I mean, I think he's a better winning percentage,
- 1:09:46Speaker 8: but that has a lot to do with what's going
- 1:09:48Speaker 8: on around him.
- 1:09:48Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, the team around him as well.
- 1:09:51Speaker 9: Well, he's not the best quarterback to wear the Lions uniform.
- 1:09:53Speaker 9: We know that.
- 1:09:54Speaker 3: But says, Jared Goff continues to build a case as
- 1:09:57Speaker 3: the greatest quarterback in franchise history.
- 1:09:59Speaker 8: You put greatest Lions quarterback, not best quarterback to put
- 1:10:02Speaker 8: on a Lion helmet.
- 1:10:03Speaker 9: That you got to go to the future Hall of
- 1:10:05Speaker 9: Famer at Stafford.
- 1:10:05Speaker 3: Yeah, okay. Number 13, the 1-1 Jaguars. One thing we
- 1:10:11Speaker 3: know about the quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, has to be better
- 1:10:13Speaker 3: against pressure. Number 12, the 2-0 Vikings. The Vikings can
- 1:10:18Speaker 3: win with replacement level QB playoff.
- 1:10:20Speaker 8: I heard Nate Tice yesterday comparing Brian Flores to a
- 1:10:24Speaker 8: knuckleball pitcher in that he just keeps offensive coordinators really,
- 1:10:27Speaker 8: really off balance.
- 1:10:29Speaker 3: You know, the best comment I ever made about a
- 1:10:32Speaker 3: knuckleball pitcher was Bob, Bob Uecker made it because Bob
- 1:10:36Speaker 3: Uecker was a catcher before he became, you know, a
- 1:10:38Speaker 3: funny man and a broadcaster. And he said, you know,
- 1:10:41Speaker 3: people make such a big deal out of catching a knuckleball.
- 1:10:44Speaker 3: I never worried about it. The guy, if I had
- 1:10:46Speaker 3: a knuckleball pitcher and he threw the ball, come across
- 1:10:50Speaker 3: the plate, then I would go to the backstop, pick
- 1:10:53Speaker 3: it up, and throw it back.
- 1:10:54Speaker 4: To him afterwards. So, yeah.
- 1:10:57Speaker 3: Number 11, the one-on-one bears. One thing we know about
- 1:11:00Speaker 3: the quarterback, Caleb Williams' hamstring injury isn't serious.
- 1:11:04Speaker 9: Yeah, what a scare.
- 1:11:05Speaker 3: Yeah, they think that Tyson Badgett can operate the offense.
- 1:11:09Speaker 3: Number 10, New England Patriots. Drake May's accuracy isn't what
- 1:11:15Speaker 3: he's accustomed to.
- 1:11:16Speaker 6: No, he hasn't looked right.
- 1:11:17Speaker 8: He has not looked right since the back half of
- 1:11:20Speaker 8: last year, and I'm going to hopefully chalk it up
- 1:11:22Speaker 8: to facing that tough Seattle front without A.J.
- 1:11:24Speaker 4: Brown.
- 1:11:25Speaker 3: Number nine, 2-0 Cincinnati. One thing we know about the QB,
- 1:11:29Speaker 3: Joe Burrow is a tough customer. I think we all
- 1:11:31Speaker 3: knew that. Number eight, the 1-1 Broncos. Bo Nix might
- 1:11:35Speaker 3: not be all that fond of September. He gets the
- 1:11:39Speaker 3: Rams on Sunday night.
- 1:11:41Speaker 9: He needs to start taking care of the football a
- 1:11:42Speaker 9: little better.
- 1:11:43Speaker 3: In his first two seasons, he's thrown eight of his
- 1:11:46Speaker 3: 23 interceptions in September, including three games with at least
- 1:11:51Speaker 3: two picks. And of course, in the season opening loss
- 1:11:54Speaker 3: to the Chiefs, he had his first career three fumble
- 1:11:56Speaker 3: game and was sacked four times.
- 1:11:59Speaker 8: He was missing guys by five yards in the first
- 1:12:01Speaker 8: half of that Jacksonville game, but he's a winning player.
- 1:12:04Speaker 6: He was able to get him back into it.
- 1:12:06Speaker 3: Uh, number seven, the one in one Ravens. One thing
- 1:12:08Speaker 3: we know about the quarterback, Lamar Jackson is facing a
- 1:12:10Speaker 3: lot of pressure. Um, Baltimore only had a 38% pass
- 1:12:16Speaker 3: block win rate in week one against the Colts and
- 1:12:20Speaker 3: 33% in week two when they lost to the Saints.
- 1:12:23Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:12:23Speaker 8: They, they invested a lot on the defensive side of
- 1:12:26Speaker 8: the football this year and they are resting even more
- 1:12:30Speaker 8: of their offense than ever on the shoulders of two guys,
- 1:12:32Speaker 8: Lamar and Derek Henry.
- 1:12:34Speaker 3: Number six, the two and O Eagles. One thing to
- 1:12:37Speaker 3: know about the quarterback, Jalen Hurts is carrying this team in, uh,
- 1:12:41Speaker 3: as he's acclimating to Sean Mannion's system as well.
- 1:12:46Speaker 9: Yeah, quietly, Jalen Hurst has had a really, really good
- 1:12:48Speaker 9: start to the year.
- 1:12:50Speaker 4: Number five, the 1-1 Rams.
- 1:12:52Speaker 3: One thing we know about the quarterback, Matthew Stafford, is
- 1:12:54Speaker 3: still capable of playing at an MVP level. We'll see
- 1:12:59Speaker 3: what happens when the time comes to get Puka Nakua back.
- 1:13:04Speaker 3: Number four, the 2-0 Chiefs. One thing we know about
- 1:13:07Speaker 3: the quarterback, Patrick Mahomes can deal from under center. Number three,
- 1:13:11Speaker 3: the 2-0 49ers. Brock Purdy looks poised for his best season.
- 1:13:16Speaker 3: Number two, the 2-0 Seahawks. Drew Locke is one of
- 1:13:20Speaker 3: the NFL's best backup quarterbacks. And number one, the Buffalo Bills.
- 1:13:25Speaker 3: Josh Allen is going to make defenses pay either way.
- 1:13:28Speaker 8: And look, they're just outscoring teams. The Buffalo defense hadn't
- 1:13:31Speaker 8: impressed me at all through two weeks. But if they
- 1:13:34Speaker 8: can put up 40 a week, it doesn't matter.
- 1:13:36Speaker 4: That's true enough.
- 1:13:37Speaker 3: Okay, before we get to break, I want to jump
- 1:13:39Speaker 3: back over to the Longhorns because there was a lot
- 1:13:42Speaker 3: made about this. I've read it on a couple of sites,
- 1:13:47Speaker 3: like The Athletic, I think at ESPN, and obviously this
- 1:13:51Speaker 3: is coming up on the fan sites. And that is,
- 1:13:53Speaker 3: and I think everybody figured this was coming, that Arch
- 1:13:56Speaker 3: Manning was going to be much more guarded in his
- 1:14:00Speaker 3: comments in media availabilities. especially given what happened a week ago.
- 1:14:07Speaker 3: So this may swing back. The pendulum may swing back.
- 1:14:12Speaker 3: But for now, he's.
- 1:14:13Speaker 4: Going to be more guarded.
- 1:14:14Speaker 3: So here with this, normally when we play sound bites
- 1:14:19Speaker 3: from a press conference, if I told Jake to play 12,
- 1:14:23Speaker 3: it might take 20 minutes to do it. It's not
- 1:14:26Speaker 3: going to take long to do this. So we'll just
- 1:14:28Speaker 3: go through this in rapid fire. This is actually how
- 1:14:31Speaker 3: it happened. First of all, is he excited to play
- 1:14:33Speaker 3: in Knoxville?
- 1:14:34Speaker 5: Yeah, definitely excited to play. Hostile environment, SEC road game.
- 1:14:38Speaker 5: That's what it's all about.
- 1:14:39Speaker 4: That's one of his longer answers. Does getting on the
- 1:14:42Speaker 4: road help him focus on football? I think so.
- 1:14:45Speaker 5: Just being kind of us against the world mentality.
- 1:14:47Speaker 4: What about the need for consistency?
- 1:14:49Speaker 5: Just trying to find that in practice this week, be
- 1:14:51Speaker 5: consistent in practice. Excited for this challenge.
- 1:14:54Speaker 3: Was there any reason that he didn't visit Tennessee during
- 1:14:57Speaker 3: the recruiting time?
- 1:14:58Speaker 4: No, just never visited. Does he watch Tennessee? tape of,
- 1:15:05Speaker 4: what's it say?
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: Allen?
- 1:15:06Speaker 6: Yeah, Josh Allen.
- 1:15:07Speaker 4: Oh, Josh Allen. Okay.
- 1:15:09Speaker 12: All right.
- 1:15:09Speaker 4: I didn't know who Allen was.
- 1:15:11Speaker 3: Josh Allen tape of protecting himself while using his legs.
- 1:15:15Speaker 4: Josh does a good job using his legs when he
- 1:15:17Speaker 4: needs to. Sometimes I.
- 1:15:20Speaker 5: Don't need to take these unnecessary hits like he does.
- 1:15:22Speaker 4: He does a good job of not. Okay.
- 1:15:25Speaker 3: Does he notice things to help him clean up on film?
- 1:15:29Speaker 5: Lots of clean up. That's what we got practice for
- 1:15:31Speaker 5: this week. Excited for the challenge.
- 1:15:32Speaker 4: Okay. And here's what I think is kind of a
- 1:15:34Speaker 4: silly question.
- 1:15:35Speaker 3: Do you listen to Rocky Top at practice and follow
- 1:15:38Speaker 3: up on how you would rate it?
- 1:15:40Speaker 4: Yeah, we played it a bunch today. How would you
- 1:15:42Speaker 4: rate it? It's not bad. Okay. How is this team
- 1:15:47Speaker 4: better equipped for playing on the road? We've got a
- 1:15:49Speaker 4: tight-knit group this year, so excited to see how we
- 1:15:51Speaker 4: do on the road. Okay. Does he ever get used
- 1:15:55Speaker 4: to the crowd noise on the road? I think so.
- 1:15:57Speaker 4: As the game goes along, you get used to it.
- 1:15:59Speaker 4: What has he seen from Tennessee when he looks at
- 1:16:02Speaker 4: them on video? They fly to the ball well-coached, so
- 1:16:05Speaker 4: excited for this challenge.
- 1:16:06Speaker 3: He was asked a question that a lot of guys
- 1:16:08Speaker 3: were asking about what the identity of this Texas team is.
- 1:16:11Speaker 4: We're going to play hard, tough, smart, physical. and continue
- 1:16:13Speaker 4: to show that each week.
- 1:16:14Speaker 3: And finally, how helpful is it to have a head
- 1:16:17Speaker 3: coach who played quarterback at that level, to have Sark
- 1:16:21Speaker 3: having been a highly decorated college quarterback?
- 1:16:24Speaker 5: It's definitely helpful having your head coach be the play
- 1:16:28Speaker 5: caller and play quarterback in his past.
- 1:16:30Speaker 4: That's it, okay?
- 1:16:32Speaker 3: So understand he's going to be, at least for a time,
- 1:16:36Speaker 3: perfunctory in his response, especially in that kind of environment.
- 1:16:41Speaker 3: where the issue happened a week ago, the exact same room,
- 1:16:44Speaker 3: the exact same setting. He might be different on the road,
- 1:16:47Speaker 3: and he might be different after games, depending on how
- 1:16:50Speaker 3: it goes. But Saturday night after the game and then yesterday,
- 1:16:55Speaker 3: he's definitely going to be more guarded.
- 1:16:56Speaker 4: I can't blame him for that.
- 1:16:57Speaker 3: I certainly just want to make sure he's being.
- 1:17:02Speaker 4: Buttoned up at the press conference.
- 1:17:04Speaker 3: All right, coming up. We'll jump back to the NFL.
- 1:17:07Speaker 3: We'll do that next when we continue on Sports Radio
- 1:17:09Speaker 3: AM 13 Under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:17:11Speaker 8: I hang my hat in Tennessee.
- 1:17:15Speaker 3: Here on a Texan Tuesday, of course, in the 4
- 1:17:17Speaker 3: o'clock hour, we always hear from the King, George Strait,
- 1:17:20Speaker 3: and this song is particularly apropos. All my exes live
- 1:17:24Speaker 3: in Texas because that's why he hangs his hat in Tennessee.
- 1:17:28Speaker 3: Texas at Tennessee this week. I was on a show
- 1:17:31Speaker 3: this morning in Knoxville. And the host of the show
- 1:17:36Speaker 3: is a sports talk guy, but he also plays in
- 1:17:39Speaker 3: a band, and they're going to be playing at a
- 1:17:40Speaker 3: place on Friday night.
- 1:17:42Speaker 9: He's doing his best Bill Shoning.
- 1:17:43Speaker 4: Yeah, probably better when it comes to that. I don't know.
- 1:17:48Speaker 4: I haven't heard the guy sing, so I don't know.
- 1:17:50Speaker 3: Anyway, he asked me for suggestions of songs that have
- 1:17:56Speaker 3: Texas in it. He said, well, you've got to go
- 1:17:58Speaker 3: George Strait.
- 1:17:59Speaker 4: All my exes live in Texas. After all, he mentions Tennessee.
- 1:18:02Speaker 4: He goes, that's perfect. So he'll be doing that.
- 1:18:04Speaker 9: He knew who to come to with a music question.
- 1:18:07Speaker 4: I suppose, I guess.
- 1:18:09Speaker 3: The Cowboys are off to Rio later this week. They'll
- 1:18:12Speaker 3: play Sunday afternoon against the Ravens. And they'll be in
- 1:18:18Speaker 3: action on Sunday afternoon against Baltimore. Both of the teams
- 1:18:22Speaker 3: are 1-1 at his press conference. Brian Schottenheimer was asked about,
- 1:18:28Speaker 3: among other things, the always challenging proposition of being able
- 1:18:32Speaker 3: to defend Lamar Jackson and was asked about Jackson's ability
- 1:18:37Speaker 3: to escape and create.
- 1:18:39Speaker 4: He's really slippery. I mean, he just, you know, he's
- 1:18:41Speaker 4: got got quickness.
- 1:18:43Speaker 11: Um, he's nifty. He's got, you know, great feet. Um,
- 1:18:47Speaker 11: but he's, he's, he's, he's, he's stronger. I mean, he's
- 1:18:49Speaker 11: a strong guy, you know, like muscular. And so he's
- 1:18:52Speaker 11: just hard to get on the ground. And, uh, those
- 1:18:54Speaker 11: guys are, um, hard to find. And those guys are
- 1:18:57Speaker 11: hard to, hard to, to play well against because he
- 1:18:59Speaker 11: can hurt you so many different ways. And of course,
- 1:19:01Speaker 11: when he breaks, he's got very, very good speed. Um,
- 1:19:04Speaker 11: but I don't think people talk enough about what a
- 1:19:07Speaker 11: great pass for the guys too.
- 1:19:09Speaker 3: Next, he was asked about his team's defensive depth really
- 1:19:13Speaker 3: being put to the test by this Baltimore team.
- 1:19:16Speaker 11: The old thing, Skyler, is next man up. I mean,
- 1:19:18Speaker 11: that's real. I thought we used the elevations well for
- 1:19:23Speaker 11: the linebackers. I think we'll look at some things potentially
- 1:19:26Speaker 11: on defense, maybe in the secondary. We've got some guys
- 1:19:29Speaker 11: there that we feel might step up and help us
- 1:19:34Speaker 11: in a couple different roles. But as we get into
- 1:19:36Speaker 11: the plan, I think it's going to be what this
- 1:19:40Speaker 11: league is about is next man up and whether it's
- 1:19:42Speaker 11: you're down for offensive lineman like we talked a lot
- 1:19:44Speaker 11: about last year you're down you're down to two linebackers
- 1:19:47Speaker 11: and then you got to have some elevations that's why
- 1:19:49Speaker 11: the league when they changed the rule to the you
- 1:19:52Speaker 11: know the practice squad being larger I think was the
- 1:19:55Speaker 11: right idea they were predicting that you know it's a
- 1:19:57Speaker 11: physical violent game that there's going to be injuries and
- 1:20:00Speaker 11: the game's going to be better when you can have
- 1:20:02Speaker 11: guys that actually know what you're doing and not have
- 1:20:03Speaker 11: to get guys off the street.
- 1:20:06Speaker 3: The run production, I think, came up the other day.
- 1:20:09Speaker 3: They only had something like 56 yards rushing, something like that.
- 1:20:13Speaker 4: Yeah, 66. 66 yards rushing.
- 1:20:15Speaker 3: And that was in the win over Washington. And some
- 1:20:19Speaker 3: of that is taking what the defense is going to
- 1:20:20Speaker 3: give you and doing some other things.
- 1:20:22Speaker 4: And Sean Hammer explained that the other day.
- 1:20:25Speaker 3: But he was asked about why the run production has
- 1:20:28Speaker 3: been behind last.
- 1:20:29Speaker 4: Year so far. A couple things.
- 1:20:31Speaker 11: One, first game, had the ball for 23 minutes. That's
- 1:20:34Speaker 11: a big part of it. You get limited ops. Yesterday,
- 1:20:38Speaker 11: quite honestly, we came out with a different plan. We
- 1:20:42Speaker 11: were going to throw it around the yard. I like
- 1:20:45Speaker 11: that plan. It worked good. This week we might run
- 1:20:49Speaker 11: it around the yard. But at the end of the day,
- 1:20:52Speaker 11: when you look at us, we're... You know, we're getting
- 1:20:56Speaker 11: a little bit too much knockback in the backfield. You know,
- 1:20:58Speaker 11: we're not getting the movement at times at certain things.
- 1:21:02Speaker 11: I do think that, you know, it's a feel thing. And,
- 1:21:06Speaker 11: you know, we had to run 20-something yards, 30 yards
- 1:21:09Speaker 11: callback late in the game. But there's a lot of
- 1:21:12Speaker 11: different things. Running games sometimes takes time. And I think
- 1:21:15Speaker 11: that's kind of where we are.
- 1:21:16Speaker 3: He was also asked with regard to that passing game,
- 1:21:19Speaker 3: you know, obviously CeeDee Lamb had a big game. on
- 1:21:22Speaker 3: Sunday against Washington. Does he have a game plan to
- 1:21:25Speaker 3: get George Pickens going?
- 1:21:26Speaker 11: Of course, I want to get, um, you know, him
- 1:21:28Speaker 11: and CD the ball. I think, you know, CD's playing great.
- 1:21:30Speaker 11: I think George is playing really well. I mean, some
- 1:21:32Speaker 11: of the catches he made yesterday were really, um, you know,
- 1:21:35Speaker 11: big time plays and big time situations for us. Third one,
- 1:21:38Speaker 11: he catches the over route, gets, you know, smacked, catches
- 1:21:41Speaker 11: a slant early. Um, he just didn't have the highlight
- 1:21:44Speaker 11: type catches and the explosive catches and things like that. But, um, yeah,
- 1:21:48Speaker 11: he draws a lot of attention out there and, uh,
- 1:21:51Speaker 11: But believe me, we're looking for ways to continue to
- 1:21:54Speaker 11: get those guys the ball. If you look at George
- 1:21:57Speaker 11: last year, he didn't really take off until a couple
- 1:22:00Speaker 11: games in. And the rest, as I know, is history,
- 1:22:04Speaker 11: how well he played. So I have no questions about
- 1:22:07Speaker 11: him and his readiness, and he'll be ready to go
- 1:22:11Speaker 11: this week.
- 1:22:11Speaker 3: Andy was also asked about being able to combine The
- 1:22:16Speaker 3: run game, the pass game, how important is that to do?
- 1:22:20Speaker 3: Given that they've had success through the year, obviously, with
- 1:22:23Speaker 3: what Dak Prescott has been doing as receivers, but how
- 1:22:25Speaker 3: important is it to combine the run game and the
- 1:22:27Speaker 3: pass game?
- 1:22:28Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, yeah. I mean, I don't want to throw
- 1:22:32Speaker 4: it 50 times a game.
- 1:22:35Speaker 11: And quite honestly, some of the best things we do
- 1:22:37Speaker 11: are our action passings. So you've got to have a
- 1:22:40Speaker 11: little semblance of a run game. But like I said,
- 1:22:44Speaker 11: Javante Williams is a terrific back. um you know the
- 1:22:47Speaker 11: offensive line has played very well for us over the
- 1:22:49Speaker 11: past two games for the most part and uh Tyler
- 1:22:52Speaker 11: Booker you know Terrence Steeler one of the stronger sides
- 1:22:56Speaker 11: on the right side of the line that in the
- 1:22:58Speaker 11: league and um it's just again we just got to
- 1:23:01Speaker 11: tighten some things up.
- 1:23:03Speaker 3: So we'll see that'll be Sunday afternoon it is a
- 1:23:06Speaker 3: 325 like a regular Sunday afternoon kickoff even though it
- 1:23:09Speaker 3: is in Rio because Rio Rio is either in central
- 1:23:12Speaker 3: time or it's in eastern time. So it's not like it's,
- 1:23:15Speaker 3: you know, Australia or even Europe, you know, something like that.
- 1:23:18Speaker 3: It's on a much more normal scale. That's why the
- 1:23:20Speaker 3: Cowboys are also leaving on Thursday to go down there.
- 1:23:23Speaker 3: There's not as much acclimation, at least in terms of
- 1:23:25Speaker 3: body clock and time. The surroundings are different, but the
- 1:23:29Speaker 3: time zone is pretty close. They're two hours ahead of
- 1:23:32Speaker 3: us here in Austin. Okay, so that would be Atlantic
- 1:23:35Speaker 3: time then. Okay, two hours ahead. Well, it's a little
- 1:23:38Speaker 3: bit of adjustment. It's kind of like going out of.
- 1:23:40Speaker 4: California, but a little bit later. Okay.
- 1:23:42Speaker 9: Nothing like Melbourne.
- 1:23:44Speaker 4: No, then again, nothing is.
- 1:23:46Speaker 9: Or as Noah Eagle said, Melbourne.
- 1:23:48Speaker 4: Yeah, right. Okay, a couple other NFL notes.
- 1:23:53Speaker 3: The Giants kind of breathing somewhat a sigh of relief
- 1:23:58Speaker 3: on that injury to Jackson Dart.
- 1:24:00Speaker 4: The X-rays negative.
- 1:24:02Speaker 3: Uh, MRI today, but expected probably in the four to
- 1:24:07Speaker 3: six week range, uh, at the very least.
- 1:24:10Speaker 8: The Twitter lip readers were right about the exchange we
- 1:24:13Speaker 8: saw on the sideline with the training staff and John Harbaugh.
- 1:24:15Speaker 3: He said, what, four to six weeks or something like
- 1:24:17Speaker 3: that is what they were saying. So we'll see, uh,
- 1:24:20Speaker 3: how that goes. Uh, other injuries, you know, the Falcons
- 1:24:24Speaker 3: have had all manner of injuries with the quarterback situation.
- 1:24:27Speaker 3: Now they do expect to have Michael Penix back on
- 1:24:29Speaker 3: the field, but They'd put their star corner, A.J. Terrell,
- 1:24:33Speaker 3: on injured reserve with a groin injury today. He came
- 1:24:40Speaker 3: out of the loss to the Panthers, didn't practice yesterday,
- 1:24:44Speaker 3: and of course isn't going to be on the field
- 1:24:48Speaker 3: when they play the Packers on Thursday night. So he's
- 1:24:51Speaker 3: got to miss at least the next four games, not
- 1:24:54Speaker 3: eligible to return until week seven. The Giants only have
- 1:24:59Speaker 3: made the official call on the IR thing, but they're
- 1:25:02Speaker 3: expected to make that call with regard to Jackson Dart.
- 1:25:06Speaker 4: It'll probably happen like that.
- 1:25:08Speaker 3: A couple other things. We've been telling you about Alec Pierce.
- 1:25:12Speaker 3: This is unfortunate for the Colts. He's going to miss
- 1:25:14Speaker 3: several weeks when he aggravated, and this isn't the most
- 1:25:17Speaker 3: common thing on the planet, a left heel injury. So
- 1:25:24Speaker 3: they moved quickly to address that absence. They agreed to
- 1:25:28Speaker 3: a deal with Darius Slayton. And so he's going to
- 1:25:31Speaker 3: attempt to rehab the injury rather than have surgery. So
- 1:25:36Speaker 3: that's a tough situation for a really good receiving target.
- 1:25:39Speaker 8: Yeah, so this is the same leg, remember, that he
- 1:25:42Speaker 8: delayed the surgery on until he signed his contract extension.
- 1:25:47Speaker 8: And I don't know enough medically where this is a...
- 1:25:52Speaker 8: you know, anything related to trying to ramp up quickly
- 1:25:55Speaker 8: off of a surgery that was delayed. So that's a
- 1:26:00Speaker 8: kind of a looming storyline over this. That's a tough
- 1:26:02Speaker 8: look for the Colton Pierce.
- 1:26:05Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:26:06Speaker 3: And interesting in Philadelphia where Dallas Goddard has an MCL sprain.
- 1:26:12Speaker 4: So he's going to be out a few weeks.
- 1:26:14Speaker 3: And they went and signed their one-time erstwhile tight end,
- 1:26:17Speaker 3: Zach Ertz.
- 1:26:18Speaker 4: Got him back.
- 1:26:18Speaker 3: He'd been with Washington. He'd been with Arizona and all
- 1:26:22Speaker 3: that sort of thing. And he had been healing up
- 1:26:26Speaker 3: as well. He had been working his way back from
- 1:26:30Speaker 3: that ACL tear in December. Said to be in good health.
- 1:26:33Speaker 3: 35 years of age.
- 1:26:35Speaker 9: How about that?
- 1:26:36Speaker 8: I thought he would probably, I thought the injury he
- 1:26:38Speaker 8: suffered carted off mid-season last year in Washington would probably
- 1:26:43Speaker 8: have ended his career.
- 1:26:44Speaker 9: So I'm really happy for him.
- 1:26:46Speaker 3: Seahawks are planning to have Sam Darnold back on the
- 1:26:48Speaker 3: practice field on Wednesday, tomorrow, after he missed most of
- 1:26:53Speaker 3: the first two games because of that glute injury. So
- 1:26:59Speaker 3: can we accurately say then that he was butthurt? Is
- 1:27:02Speaker 3: that what we're saying here?
- 1:27:03Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:27:05Speaker 9: Missing a phrase in there.
- 1:27:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:27:06Speaker 3: Anyway, Mike McDonald said there's a chance that he'll play
- 1:27:10Speaker 3: against your Washington Commanders at Northwest Stadium this week.
- 1:27:14Speaker 8: Well, we might be treated to Mariota versus Locke otherwise
- 1:27:19Speaker 8: in the home opener for Washington.
- 1:27:21Speaker 6: That's where the air comes out of the balloon.
- 1:27:23Speaker 8: The Commander season ends before the team even gets to
- 1:27:25Speaker 8: see Jaden Daniels play again.
- 1:27:27Speaker 4: Well, that's true.
- 1:27:28Speaker 6: The fans, I mean.
- 1:27:29Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:27:30Speaker 11: Right.
- 1:27:30Speaker 4: Exactly. Caleb Williams.
- 1:27:34Speaker 3: Supposed to be week to week with that right hamstring injury.
- 1:27:38Speaker 3: In fact, Ben Johnson, the coach, says he's not even
- 1:27:41Speaker 3: really going to rule him out for the Monday night
- 1:27:43Speaker 3: game against the Eagles, but he's not expecting him to
- 1:27:47Speaker 3: practice this week. And normally, if you're not practicing, you're
- 1:27:50Speaker 3: probably not going to get back out there on the
- 1:27:52Speaker 3: field unless they really, really need you. But in other words,
- 1:27:55Speaker 3: I guess the main thing is the important thing that,
- 1:28:02Speaker 3: he's going to be back sooner rather than later because
- 1:28:04Speaker 3: a lot of folks wondered about that.
- 1:28:08Speaker 4: And then.
- 1:28:10Speaker 3: We heard from Sean McVay that funny comment earlier where
- 1:28:13Speaker 3: he owned the poor travel planning for the Australia trip
- 1:28:18Speaker 3: and the season-opening loss to the 49ers. But McVay today
- 1:28:23Speaker 3: said that he's not sure if Pukunukuwa Is going to
- 1:28:28Speaker 3: be able to go yet. Held out of last night's game.
- 1:28:31Speaker 3: Doesn't know if he'll play Sunday night against the Broncos.
- 1:28:33Speaker 3: He said if he's ready to go, great. If not,
- 1:28:34Speaker 3: we'll continue to roll. So he's got that hip and groin.
- 1:28:40Speaker 3: kind of combo package there. Said still dealing with a
- 1:28:44Speaker 3: little bit of soreness in the groin and didn't practice Saturday.
- 1:28:49Speaker 3: And it's not related to the injury that caused him
- 1:28:54Speaker 3: to miss time during training camp. Uh, it's the soft
- 1:28:57Speaker 3: tissue type. He said, you're going to err on the
- 1:28:59Speaker 3: side of caution with that. So, uh, we'll see, but
- 1:29:02Speaker 3: he's not going to be able, he's not going to
- 1:29:05Speaker 3: go there. And then, and then one other NFL note,
- 1:29:07Speaker 3: this is kind of weird. Um, the, the Rams took
- 1:29:12Speaker 3: a lot of grief and deservedly so for how they
- 1:29:15Speaker 3: played when they got whacked by the 49ers in Australia,
- 1:29:19Speaker 3: starting with the organization all the way to the top.
- 1:29:21Speaker 3: And like we said, the, the soundbite that we played
- 1:29:23Speaker 3: from Sean McVay, he owned it. said it was just,
- 1:29:27Speaker 3: you know, they tried something that didn't work. Poor travel planning.
- 1:29:31Speaker 3: And I know a lot of us are sitting back going,
- 1:29:33Speaker 3: how could he not know that? How could he not
- 1:29:36Speaker 3: know how to do that? How can he not know
- 1:29:40Speaker 3: that that is not.
- 1:29:41Speaker 4: Going to work?
- 1:29:43Speaker 3: It worked when they went to London, but they're going
- 1:29:46Speaker 3: East and they're not crossing an international date line and
- 1:29:50Speaker 3: a lot less to do. And they had played in
- 1:29:52Speaker 3: Baltimore the prior Sunday. So then they have nearly as
- 1:29:54Speaker 3: far to travel before that game. And they were playing
- 1:29:57Speaker 3: Jacksonville as opposed to San Francisco. So none of it worked, uh,
- 1:30:02Speaker 3: against the 49ers. And he was willing to, to take
- 1:30:06Speaker 3: the heat on that, um, put it on himself.
- 1:30:10Speaker 4: But then, um, The Rams turn around.
- 1:30:14Speaker 3: They played really, really well last night and beat the Giants.
- 1:30:18Speaker 3: And you say, okay, well, that's one thing. There was
- 1:30:25Speaker 3: a little bit of trolling that happened. Did you hear
- 1:30:27Speaker 3: about this, what the Rams did?
- 1:30:29Speaker 11: No.
- 1:30:29Speaker 4: Okay. All right.
- 1:30:33Speaker 3: Los Angeles shared an image of a bitten apple with
- 1:30:36Speaker 3: the Giants NY logo on it, like taking a bite
- 1:30:38Speaker 3: out of the big apple. But in the caption, the
- 1:30:41Speaker 3: team wrote, ate the W, which was a reference to
- 1:30:47Speaker 3: an eat a W speech that Jameis Winston delivered when
- 1:30:51Speaker 3: he was playing for Tampa Bay.
- 1:30:54Speaker 4: Because they kind of ate him up off of that.
- 1:30:57Speaker 4: So they took a little jab on that.
- 1:30:58Speaker 3: But we've learned and have known for some time that
- 1:31:05Speaker 3: the media relations department for an NFL team or a
- 1:31:11Speaker 3: lot of times college team is separate of those who
- 1:31:15Speaker 3: are handling the social media accounts.
- 1:31:18Speaker 6: Which is a good thing.
- 1:31:20Speaker 4: Yeah, because.
- 1:31:21Speaker 6: Church and state on that.
- 1:31:22Speaker 3: Yeah, and if somebody goes rogue or some 23-year-old fresh
- 1:31:27Speaker 3: out of college guy just completely just says something ridiculous
- 1:31:32Speaker 3: they can write it off to that boom the guy's
- 1:31:34Speaker 3: gone you know something like that as opposed to like
- 1:31:36Speaker 3: long-time media relations people who aren't going to do that
- 1:31:38Speaker 3: sort of thing for a team so anyway uh somebody
- 1:31:42Speaker 3: did that all right uh we've got more coming up
- 1:31:44Speaker 3: more on the longhorns as well when we continue on
- 1:31:47Speaker 3: sports radio am 13 under the zone and the iheart
- 1:31:49Speaker 3: radio app so here we are on the uh Backside
- 1:31:54Speaker 3: at 4 o'clock hour here and still on a Texan Tuesday.
- 1:31:58Speaker 8: Coming back with Josh Abbott Band, probably making their debut
- 1:32:01Speaker 8: here on this program. A band from Lubbock, Texas with
- 1:32:05Speaker 8: Texas Women, Tennessee Whiskey.
- 1:32:08Speaker 3: Josh Abbott has been on this station before. In fact,
- 1:32:10Speaker 3: Josh Abbott has been in this station.
- 1:32:13Speaker 6: On this program before, though?
- 1:32:14Speaker 4: On my show.
- 1:32:15Speaker 6: No kidding, Craig.
- 1:32:17Speaker 8: Yep.
- 1:32:18Speaker 4: Josh Abbott, I met him.
- 1:32:20Speaker 3: In Omaha, at the College World Series when Texas and
- 1:32:23Speaker 3: Texas Tech were both there, this would have.
- 1:32:26Speaker 4: Been like 2014, and Augie.
- 1:32:28Speaker 3: Garrido took the entire team and the travel party out
- 1:32:31Speaker 3: to dinner, and we were at this really nice Italian
- 1:32:33Speaker 3: place called La Solomio, and there was Josh Abbott sitting
- 1:32:37Speaker 3: across the way with some friends, and Abbott, who is
- 1:32:41Speaker 3: an avowed Texas Tech Red Raider, nevertheless, plays a lot
- 1:32:44Speaker 3: in Austin, and sent dessert over to the entire table,
- 1:32:49Speaker 3: to our table.
- 1:32:50Speaker 6: That's awesome.
- 1:32:51Speaker 4: Good dude. Came over, visited with us and everything.
- 1:32:53Speaker 9: We're going to bring him in for some more Texas Tuesdays.
- 1:32:55Speaker 4: That would be nice.
- 1:32:58Speaker 3: So, speaking of Texans, the Texas Longhorns headed for Knoxville
- 1:33:04Speaker 3: to take on the Tennessee Volunteers.
- 1:33:07Speaker 4: We've heard some from Trevor Goosby.
- 1:33:08Speaker 9: Here's a little more.
- 1:33:09Speaker 3: He was asked about this environment at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville.
- 1:33:14Speaker 3: And Goosby was asked, what all has SART said to
- 1:33:18Speaker 3: them about.
- 1:33:18Speaker 10: This obviously um you know he knows that it's going
- 1:33:21Speaker 10: to be super loud really just anywhere we go you
- 1:33:23Speaker 10: know in the sec you know they love football you
- 1:33:25Speaker 10: know their fans love football he kind of focused more
- 1:33:28Speaker 10: on us though and just understanding you know um you
- 1:33:31Speaker 10: know we're going into a hostile environment we got to
- 1:33:32Speaker 10: be able to like he said you know be a
- 1:33:34Speaker 10: fist because a fist hurts a lot more than a
- 1:33:36Speaker 10: hand does so just being unified.
- 1:33:38Speaker 3: So uh one of the popular questions we even heard
- 1:33:42Speaker 3: arch manning address it earlier this hour about him protecting
- 1:33:47Speaker 3: himself a little bit more when he runs the football
- 1:33:49Speaker 3: and gooseby was asked about.
- 1:33:50Speaker 10: It definitely for sure and uh you know arch is
- 1:33:52Speaker 10: a tough guy um so there's no doubt that he'll
- 1:33:55Speaker 10: be able to he he can't take those hits that
- 1:33:58Speaker 10: doesn't mean i want him to obviously you know being
- 1:34:00Speaker 10: our quarterback um You know, just protecting, you know, himself
- 1:34:04Speaker 10: and also us, you know, continuing to do a good
- 1:34:06Speaker 10: job and, you know, even doing a better job protecting
- 1:34:08Speaker 10: him as well.
- 1:34:09Speaker 3: You know, we heard from Sean Miller, the Longhorn basketball
- 1:34:13Speaker 3: head coach, last hour. And, of course, one of his,
- 1:34:17Speaker 3: you know, freshmen really get acclimated and a lot of
- 1:34:22Speaker 3: accolades coming in is Austin Goosby, Trevor's brother. So Trevor's asked,
- 1:34:26Speaker 3: has he talked to Austin much about this? His first
- 1:34:29Speaker 3: couple of years of UT and Austin getting acclimated to everything?
- 1:34:33Speaker 10: You know, I told him, the first thing I told
- 1:34:34Speaker 10: him is that it wasn't going to be easy coming here.
- 1:34:36Speaker 10: You know, playing for the University of Texas, we're a
- 1:34:39Speaker 10: big brand. And, you know, people, there's eyes everywhere. You know,
- 1:34:43Speaker 10: that was the first thing I told him. And just
- 1:34:45Speaker 10: to just buy into the program and work hard. Those
- 1:34:48Speaker 10: are the kind of things that I learned from, you know,
- 1:34:50Speaker 10: my successors. You know, I always talk about Kelvin and
- 1:34:52Speaker 10: Jake and Hayden. You guys hear that a lot. But,
- 1:34:55Speaker 10: you know, just the.
- 1:34:57Speaker 10: The quality of hard work, or the value of hard work,
- 1:34:59Speaker 10: that's kind of what I, you know, hit on him,
- 1:35:01Speaker 10: and obviously, you know, he's a good player coming out
- 1:35:02Speaker 10: of high school, but, you know, talent only gets you
- 1:35:04Speaker 10: so far, and that's kind of what I told him.
- 1:35:06Speaker 3: All right, a couple other things, asked about the offensive inconsistency,
- 1:35:11Speaker 3: as Sar called it, choppy, whatever, against UTSA.
- 1:35:14Speaker 10: I think just, we have to do a better job
- 1:35:16Speaker 10: of straining mentally, you know, just mentally continuing to be
- 1:35:19Speaker 10: in the game, and making sure that we're executing, you know,
- 1:35:22Speaker 10: no matter who's on the field, whether it's Ohio State, UTSA,
- 1:35:25Speaker 10: Texas State, or Tennessee, you know, and just making sure
- 1:35:28Speaker 10: that we're focused on what we have going on.
- 1:35:31Speaker 3: And then finally, one of those, I won't say it
- 1:35:35Speaker 3: was a gotcha journalism kind of question, but, you know,
- 1:35:38Speaker 3: there's people that always want to see if they can
- 1:35:41Speaker 3: get some sort of response out of guys about a
- 1:35:43Speaker 3: certain thing. And so Trevor was asked about, has there
- 1:35:45Speaker 3: been much locker room talk about all this fan stuff
- 1:35:48Speaker 3: going back, and forth about who's the real UT and
- 1:35:52Speaker 3: the real Orange and all that stuff, and Goosby wasn't
- 1:35:54Speaker 3: having it.
- 1:35:55Speaker 4: No, not really.
- 1:35:55Speaker 10: We're not really focused on, you know, who the real
- 1:35:58Speaker 10: UT is. At the end of the day, this is
- 1:35:59Speaker 10: a SEC game, and, you know, we're just, you know,
- 1:36:02Speaker 10: getting ready to play whoever it is that, you know,
- 1:36:05Speaker 10: steps on the field.
- 1:36:05Speaker 4: Who is the real UT?
- 1:36:08Speaker 10: I mean, you know, it's kind of up in the
- 1:36:11Speaker 10: air for everybody. So, you know, I just know for me, like,
- 1:36:16Speaker 10: I'm more of a burnt Orange fan, you know.
- 1:36:19Speaker 4: The Tennessee orange personally.
- 1:36:20Speaker 10: So I didn't say I didn't like it. I just
- 1:36:23Speaker 10: like burnt orange a little bit better.
- 1:36:24Speaker 4: You know what I mean? So yeah, there you go.
- 1:36:28Speaker 3: And then when he walked away, several, when he was done,
- 1:36:30Speaker 3: that was the last question. Several people said, nice job, Trevor.
- 1:36:34Speaker 4: Nice job. Way to, way to get around that.
- 1:36:37Speaker 3: A couple other, um, College football notes, Shane Beamer, head
- 1:36:40Speaker 3: coach of South Carolina, defending his quarterback, Lenora Sellers, who
- 1:36:44Speaker 3: has struggled coming off. And he said they all need
- 1:36:47Speaker 3: to play better. Then a reporter asked him about rumblings
- 1:36:50Speaker 3: from those who say a change at quarterback is needed.
- 1:36:53Speaker 3: He said people outside of this building don't get to
- 1:36:55Speaker 3: decide that.
- 1:36:57Speaker 4: We win as a team and lose as a team.
- 1:36:59Speaker 3: Are there some throws that Lenores would like to have
- 1:37:00Speaker 3: back or throws he'd like to make?
- 1:37:02Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:37:03Speaker 3: And then there's also some plays we made or didn't
- 1:37:04Speaker 3: make on defense and special teams that every single person
- 1:37:08Speaker 3: would like to have back. As I told Lenores, when
- 1:37:10Speaker 3: you lose a football game, the two people who get
- 1:37:12Speaker 3: the most blame are the coach and the quarterback. And
- 1:37:14Speaker 3: it's no different this week. We'll worry about what we control.
- 1:37:17Speaker 3: Lenores needs to be better. I need to be better.
- 1:37:19Speaker 3: Our entire team needs to be better. They better be
- 1:37:22Speaker 3: better going to Alabama this week. All right, we'll be
- 1:37:25Speaker 3: back to wrap up today's edition of the program on
- 1:37:27Speaker 3: 1300 The Zone.
