- 1:58Speaker 9: be flying by like a flash because this weekend will
- 2:02Speaker 9: be preseason hockey.
- 2:04Speaker 6: And it is officially our.
- 2:06Speaker 9: Ice breaking moment here once again for the season on KJR.
- 2:10Speaker 9: We'll lay the whole schedule out for you with the
- 2:12Speaker 9: Kraken getting ahead.
- 2:13Speaker 6: Here for the preseason.
- 2:15Speaker 9: With the Canucks, Oilers, and Flames all in that preseason
- 2:19Speaker 9: group before we finally hit the ground running officially on
- 2:22Speaker 9: October 1. Without further ado, Everett and Al joining me. Boys,
- 2:27Speaker 9: we have made it. We have made it. The official
- 2:31Speaker 9: question is, how was your summer?
- 2:32Speaker 3: Well, Mikey, it was too long, and I'm tired of
- 2:37Speaker 3: saying that for the past three years. It was too long,
- 2:41Speaker 3: but yes, I did use it to its max. Smoked
- 2:46Speaker 3: a lot of meat, caught a lot of crab, enjoyed
- 2:49Speaker 3: a lot of weather, a lot of golf, but man,
- 2:52Speaker 3: I am ready to get back after it.
- 2:53Speaker 6: You have leftovers also?
- 2:56Speaker 3: They're in the freezer. So, you know, let me know.
- 2:59Speaker 6: Way to make some new friends. Fitz, what's up?
- 3:01Speaker 4: I'm with Al, man.
- 3:02Speaker 2: I hate these long off seasons.
- 3:03Speaker 4: Make sure my life's around the corner. I love the
- 3:06Speaker 4: long off season.
- 3:07Speaker 3: You didn't say we.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I didn't say we. I said I. No, it's funny.
- 3:12Speaker 4: Shelly, the other day, she was like, I'm just realizing
- 3:14Speaker 4: that you're going back to work now.
- 3:15Speaker 2: And like, it's just. I'm getting used to.
- 3:17Speaker 4: Having you around, and I'm like, yeah, no, I know,
- 3:21Speaker 4: as I'm going through the schedule, like, all right, day
- 3:23Speaker 4: off here, great hotel there.
- 3:25Speaker 2: I can get my shoes packed. Like, I got everything
- 3:27Speaker 2: ready to go.
- 3:28Speaker 4: No, listen, man, I'm with Al. I am tired of
- 3:31Speaker 4: these long off-seasons, but like Al, I hit the reset
- 3:37Speaker 4: meter as hard as I could.
- 3:38Speaker 9: We.
- 3:39Speaker 4: plenty of time in the driveway. My son's now four.
- 3:42Speaker 2: He's hitting real tee balls.
- 3:44Speaker 4: So going to the, going to the ballpark and, and
- 3:48Speaker 4: playing baseball with him. A guy's trip went to Pittsburgh
- 3:52Speaker 4: and Cleveland, saw a couple of baseball games.
- 3:54Speaker 6: Don't bury the lead. Also, they rolled out.
- 3:58Speaker 4: Oh, yep. I went back home boys.
- 4:02Speaker 2: It felt really good to go back home.
- 4:05Speaker 4: And I actually did go back home, went to Detroit
- 4:08Speaker 4: as well to see my fam. So, It was good,
- 4:10Speaker 4: but I've been itchy since about August 1st, so I'm
- 4:13Speaker 4: ready to go.
- 4:13Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm itchy as heck too right now.
- 4:16Speaker 9: We had some good vacation time with family on the
- 4:18Speaker 9: Benton side, went to California and did the usual things.
- 4:22Speaker 9: Amy's car unfortunately went kaput, but good friends of ours
- 4:25Speaker 9: down with Tacoma Nissan had a pretty nice hookup and
- 4:28Speaker 9: she's back on the road and we're kind of do
- 4:30Speaker 9: an SUV swapping back and forth. So the Benton family
- 4:33Speaker 9: is a busy family. Kids are playing baseball. They're getting
- 4:36Speaker 9: into basketball as well. They want to watch some hockey.
- 4:38Speaker 9: So we're going here, there, everywhere. And we are getting
- 4:43Speaker 9: closer and closer to our annual Global Credit Union Kraken
- 4:47Speaker 9: Audio Network dinner kickoff launch, I would believe.
- 4:51Speaker 3: I'm glad it's official.
- 4:54Speaker 9: It's put the five months of waiting in the rear
- 4:56Speaker 9: view mirror for me. I have been aching to get
- 4:59Speaker 9: these last five months here in the rearview mirror.
- 5:02Speaker 6: But let's get after it, boys.
- 5:03Speaker 9: First off, I think with training camp finally here, 84
- 5:07Speaker 9: games doing this officially, which means preseason will be shorter,
- 5:10Speaker 9: which also means training camp is going to fly by
- 5:13Speaker 9: here in a flash. Opening, of course, here Thursday, and
- 5:17Speaker 9: then just like that, voila, Saturday, first preseason game, and
- 5:21Speaker 9: then we get into the part of evaluating who's going
- 5:23Speaker 9: to make this roster because there are a ton of
- 5:25Speaker 9: question marks, especially in with the young guys. So I
- 5:29Speaker 9: think for us, and I'll just kind of begin with
- 5:32Speaker 9: the general overall scope of this. I think for me,
- 5:35Speaker 9: the word is opportunity for you guys. What are we
- 5:38Speaker 9: looking forward to personally here for the beginning of this season?
- 5:41Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 5:42Speaker 4: I mean, I think opportunity number one, I think also
- 5:45Speaker 4: for me, when you look at the shortness of this
- 5:48Speaker 4: training camp, you're really going to see who took things
- 5:52Speaker 4: seriously over the summertime and who kept their training up
- 5:57Speaker 4: who worked out the way they were supposed to because
- 5:59Speaker 4: we go from 21 to 14 days of camp you
- 6:02Speaker 4: go from four uh to or you go from six
- 6:06Speaker 4: to four games and if you have a hundred games
- 6:10Speaker 4: or more in the nhl you can only play for
- 6:12Speaker 4: two of those games so you really only have two
- 6:15Speaker 4: shots to get your body right so we're going to
- 6:18Speaker 4: see the offseason conditioning and where that lies. I also
- 6:22Speaker 4: think this is going to be a real tough test.
- 6:25Speaker 4: We haven't seen an 84-game schedule since, what, 1994, I
- 6:31Speaker 4: think it was, 93, 4, 4, 5 seasons.
- 6:33Speaker 6: Back when Gretzky was still winning scoring titles.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 6:37Speaker 4: So, you know, this is uncharted territory for players right now.
- 6:42Speaker 4: And I do think that you're maybe going to see
- 6:45Speaker 4: an uptick in the injury front this year.
- 6:47Speaker 3: But you're right.
- 6:48Speaker 4: A lot of questions are going to be answered in
- 6:50Speaker 4: these next two weeks. And I think looking at the
- 6:52Speaker 4: Kraken roster, you lose Alexiak, you lose Jaden Schwartz, that
- 6:57Speaker 4: and Ellie Tolvanen. So now you've got the likes of
- 7:01Speaker 4: Avayani Newman, you've got Ryan Winterton, you've got Jacob Melanson,
- 7:07Speaker 4: you've got Yager Furkus, Oskar Fisker-Molgaard, John Hayden. You've got
- 7:12Speaker 4: a number of guys who are going to be battling
- 7:15Speaker 4: for spots in that bottom six forward group. I think
- 7:17Speaker 4: your top six forward group It's pretty much set. You
- 7:20Speaker 4: only have got one D that you have to really replace.
- 7:22Speaker 4: So is it going to be Mahura or is it
- 7:24Speaker 4: going to be Cale Flurry? Tyson Jugnoff is in that
- 7:27Speaker 4: mix as well. But the bottom six forward group, that
- 7:31Speaker 4: is where a lot of, for me anyway, a lot
- 7:33Speaker 4: of the battles are going to take place these next
- 7:36Speaker 4: two weeks.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, some of the questions that I've written
- 7:39Speaker 3: down so far, and one of them was about Cale
- 7:42Speaker 3: Flurry is having played 23 games, you know, does he
- 7:44Speaker 3: have a full-time role? on the blue line this year.
- 7:48Speaker 3: Yanni Newman's still a question mark for me. I need
- 7:51Speaker 3: to see big things from Yanni Newman outside of a
- 7:54Speaker 3: one-timer from the top of the circles on the power
- 7:56Speaker 3: play in training camp. I don't think any of us
- 8:00Speaker 3: believes Curtis Douglas is going to play 84 games, but
- 8:04Speaker 3: what effect does having him on the lineup have for
- 8:08Speaker 3: the team? Fitz, you and I had a chance to
- 8:10Speaker 3: meet him the other day, and I don't know about you,
- 8:12Speaker 3: but I felt like I was about five feet tall.
- 8:14Speaker 6: I didn't like it.
- 8:16Speaker 4: I remember the first time I met Jamie Alexiak at
- 8:18Speaker 4: the expansion draft and I was like, I don't like
- 8:19Speaker 4: looking up at you. And then Curtis Douglas walks in.
- 8:22Speaker 4: I'm like, I damn sure don't like looking up at you.
- 8:24Speaker 4: Like I can't do it.
- 8:26Speaker 9: I was hosting dog boat, by the way, it's kind
- 8:28Speaker 9: of like a party boat, sailgate thing for the Washington
- 8:31Speaker 9: Huskies this last Saturday when they played Utah state and
- 8:34Speaker 9: just got out of that game by the hair of
- 8:36Speaker 9: their chinny chin chin. But a few cracking players, of course,
- 8:40Speaker 9: were there at the game. Ran into Bobby McMahon along
- 8:44Speaker 9: the way. Saw Jordan Eberle set high. And I took
- 8:47Speaker 9: my oldest son. And because my wife, Amy, couldn't come,
- 8:52Speaker 9: our youngest son, Liam, had a.
- 8:54Speaker 6: Fall baseball game. They were elsewhere.
- 8:57Speaker 9: Lucas wanted to invite one of his best buddies here
- 8:59Speaker 9: from his baseball team and his dad. And we get
- 9:02Speaker 9: going into the stadium and we brush right by Curtis Douglas.
- 9:07Speaker 9: And our dad tagging along goes, Who is that? And
- 9:10Speaker 9: I go, that's unofficially our club bouncer.
- 9:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:15Speaker 6: He's a big boy.
- 9:16Speaker 7: He's a big boy.
- 9:17Speaker 9: That's also officially a tease here for who we're going
- 9:20Speaker 9: to pick for our camp dark horses coming up. Because again,
- 9:23Speaker 9: there's a lot of question marks here on this roster
- 9:25Speaker 9: that I'm looking forward to. I had a chance to
- 9:27Speaker 9: see some of the guys just, you know, skate unofficially
- 9:29Speaker 9: the other day before media day really got up and
- 9:31Speaker 9: going and ramping up here. We'll get to that in
- 9:35Speaker 9: just a bit. First off, I want to get into
- 9:37Speaker 9: camp storylines. And we saw not just one, but two
- 9:40Speaker 9: breaking news items happen on Wednesday morning shortly before we
- 9:44Speaker 9: began recording this podcast.
- 9:46Speaker 6: Number one, Chuck Fletcher named senior advisor to the general manager.
- 9:52Speaker 9: And I think number one, not just what he brings,
- 9:55Speaker 9: but number two, what's it going to say maybe as
- 9:59Speaker 9: far as the influence? and decision making. In hockey operations.
- 10:02Speaker 9: I think for me number one. It is such a
- 10:05Speaker 9: relationship based game. So you go right here to the
- 10:08Speaker 9: past resume. Where they cross. Jason Botterills had experience with
- 10:13Speaker 9: Chuck Fletcher. The two were in Pittsburgh together. When the
- 10:16Speaker 9: team won the Stanley Cup back. In 2009. Number two,
- 10:20Speaker 9: you also bring in a guy who's ran teams across
- 10:23Speaker 9: multiple decades. The Florida Panthers were his expansion project, and
- 10:27Speaker 9: they got to the Stanley Cup final under his watch.
- 10:29Speaker 9: He was a part of the Ducks front office when
- 10:30Speaker 9: they got to the Cup final as well. You got
- 10:32Speaker 9: experience with Minnesota. He was in the room when they
- 10:35Speaker 9: drafted Kirill Kaprizov, Joel Eriksson, etc. The Flyers, it ended
- 10:40Speaker 9: with about a 500 record. He moved on, then went
- 10:43Speaker 9: to the similar role that he had in New Jersey,
- 10:46Speaker 9: and they cleaned house after letting go of Tom Fitzgerald.
- 10:49Speaker 9: Moves like these are for a figure who's brought in
- 10:51Speaker 9: as a sounding board, but what do we make out
- 10:53Speaker 9: of the move?
- 10:54Speaker 6: Fellas, take it away.
- 10:56Speaker 3: Well, I would say, Mike, that it can be really good.
- 11:01Speaker 3: It can be good to have advisors. Listen, you know,
- 11:04Speaker 3: no one thinks, I don't care which GM you are
- 11:07Speaker 3: in the NHL, no one thinks they have all the answers.
- 11:08Speaker 3: So I think senior advisors are good. But I also
- 11:11Speaker 3: think of... Something that happened recently for me where I
- 11:16Speaker 3: was sending a very important text message. And normally I
- 11:19Speaker 3: would ask my wife, hey, what do you think about this?
- 11:21Speaker 3: And she would give me some feedback and she'd say,
- 11:23Speaker 3: change this, do this, do that. In this particular instance,
- 11:27Speaker 3: I had five people that were helping me. An hour
- 11:31Speaker 3: and a half later, I didn't have a text sent.
- 11:34Speaker 3: And so my point is, is that you get too
- 11:37Speaker 3: many voices in the room and sometimes you get over analysis,
- 11:42Speaker 3: paralysis by analysis. And I hope that's not what happens here.
- 11:47Speaker 3: I hope it leads to just better decision-making, but too
- 11:50Speaker 3: many cooks in the kitchen can be a bad thing.
- 11:54Speaker 4: I think anytime you've got a person, coach, GM, player, advisor, whatever,
- 11:59Speaker 4: who've won the championships and who have been a part of,
- 12:03Speaker 4: of winning cultures, it only serves your organization in a
- 12:07Speaker 4: positive way. I mean, a lot of his success granted
- 12:11Speaker 4: has been, you know, more than a decade ago. So I,
- 12:15Speaker 4: I guess there is a little bit of the, what
- 12:17Speaker 4: have you done for me lately factor there, but you can't,
- 12:22Speaker 4: you can't teach success, right? That's something that you don't
- 12:25Speaker 4: fall into by accident. And I think for him, he's
- 12:28Speaker 4: made some big trades. Um, he, he's won cups. He's
- 12:32Speaker 4: been in roles where he has had to make some
- 12:35Speaker 4: tough decisions and by and large, he's, he's made the
- 12:39Speaker 4: right call more often than not.
- 12:42Speaker 2: So I think that's a positive here. I'm with Al.
- 12:44Speaker 4: You can't ever have too many angels on your shoulder
- 12:47Speaker 4: helping you out. And I think with a guy like
- 12:49Speaker 4: Jason Bottrell, who I've, I've come to, I've come to
- 12:54Speaker 4: know is, is pretty collaborative. And that's a really good thing.
- 12:57Speaker 4: I think especially, in today's NHL when you've got so
- 13:01Speaker 4: many different players who need so many different things and
- 13:04Speaker 4: this isn't this is no longer a one-size-fits-all sport you
- 13:09Speaker 4: need different people for different things in your organization and
- 13:14Speaker 4: Jason has proven to be very collaborative in that in
- 13:16Speaker 4: that effort so I think this is a move that's
- 13:19Speaker 4: going to benefit Seattle in the long term but again
- 13:22Speaker 4: And like I said, I'm with Al, you know, hopefully
- 13:25Speaker 4: the roles within the front office are clearly defined. Hopefully
- 13:30Speaker 4: there isn't seven text messages trying to figure out what
- 13:33Speaker 4: we're having for lunch today. And we can we can
- 13:36Speaker 4: get that all sorted out. But, you know, Chuck Fletcher
- 13:40Speaker 4: is a person that is is very well respected online.
- 13:44Speaker 4: around the hockey world. He is a genuinely, by all accounts,
- 13:49Speaker 4: good guy. Like he is a really good person to have.
- 13:54Speaker 4: And Mikey, you and I, and Al as well, you know,
- 13:58Speaker 4: if you can enjoy the people that you work with,
- 14:01Speaker 4: if you're working with good people, you know, I think
- 14:04Speaker 4: that's going to solve a lot of problems. So I'm
- 14:07Speaker 4: on board with it. I think it can, it's going
- 14:10Speaker 4: to be, you know, someone that's going to help this team.
- 14:12Speaker 4: And also too, when you look at senior advisor, that
- 14:15Speaker 4: role means different things in different organizations. What he did
- 14:20Speaker 4: in New Jersey as a senior advisor might be different
- 14:25Speaker 4: from what he does here in Seattle in that same role.
- 14:28Speaker 4: So it's going to take some time to see what
- 14:30Speaker 4: that role is going to be. And hopefully over the
- 14:32Speaker 4: next few days of training camp, And preseason, we'll be
- 14:36Speaker 4: able to meet him. We'll be able to talk to
- 14:38Speaker 4: Jason and get an idea what that role is going
- 14:41Speaker 4: to be. But you're bringing in cups. You're bringing in guys,
- 14:44Speaker 4: a guy that's had success, a guy that's drafted great
- 14:48Speaker 4: players and has had a history of that. So I
- 14:50Speaker 4: think it's going to it's going to pay positive dividends.
- 14:53Speaker 7: For this team.
- 14:54Speaker 3: At the end of the day, it's about leadership, right?
- 14:58Speaker 3: And lots of times you think about leadership in the
- 15:00Speaker 3: front office and it's coach and GM and assistant GM.
- 15:03Speaker 3: I think you're trying to strengthen and broaden that leadership,
- 15:06Speaker 3: just like you might do the same thing with your
- 15:08Speaker 3: team on who wears a letter, right, Mike?
- 15:10Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely.
- 15:11Speaker 6: Absolutely.
- 15:12Speaker 9: And we'll get into this here in just a little
- 15:13Speaker 9: bit because that's a terrific segue. I'm wrapping up my
- 15:16Speaker 9: thoughts here on this with Chuck Fletcher, just with I
- 15:19Speaker 9: think ultimately.
- 15:20Speaker 6: The key here is stability.
- 15:22Speaker 9: That's the big word here for me, because we all
- 15:25Speaker 9: know that from the top, this organization wants to win.
- 15:28Speaker 6: But how do you get to a winning cycle.
- 15:32Speaker 9: Over and over and over? You need stability, number one.
- 15:36Speaker 9: And so this is ultimately, I think the goal in
- 15:38Speaker 9: this is to try to find an established ground where
- 15:41Speaker 9: you can begin to veer in one direction from anywhere
- 15:45Speaker 9: from how you manage your roster to player development, to
- 15:50Speaker 9: drafting all across the board. Not many guys here in
- 15:53Speaker 9: the NHL who've got Chuck Fletcher's resume and for as
- 15:56Speaker 9: long of a resume as he has. So I think ultimately,
- 16:00Speaker 9: if you're doing this year to try to begin the
- 16:03Speaker 9: build with stability, that's the word that Jason Botterill has
- 16:07Speaker 9: used before and used this as well back earlier this year,
- 16:10Speaker 9: is finding a guy who has done this over and over,
- 16:12Speaker 9: who he's worked with that can help take that next
- 16:15Speaker 9: step and then build incrementally That, I think, is the
- 16:18Speaker 9: biggest key for a hire like this and where they
- 16:20Speaker 9: want to go. To the leadership group side, just announced
- 16:23Speaker 9: as well Wednesday morning after this, it's out. Five players
- 16:28Speaker 9: wearing a letter. Number one, no surprise, Jordan Eberle. He
- 16:31Speaker 9: will be captain now for the third consecutive season. Matty
- 16:35Speaker 9: Beneers is back wearing an A. Adam Larson's back wearing
- 16:38Speaker 9: an A. Two new additions, which were very, very intriguing
- 16:42Speaker 9: for me, and I'm not surprised this happened. For many
- 16:45Speaker 9: of us, we're not surprised this happened. Vince Dunn and
- 16:49Speaker 9: Brandon Montour. Monty is the guy that we usually talk
- 16:54Speaker 9: about who is the emotional engine in this dressing room.
- 16:59Speaker 9: And we all kind of figured maybe it was a
- 17:02Speaker 9: matter of time with some roster changeover. I love the addition,
- 17:06Speaker 9: especially with Brandon Montour as part of this leadership group.
- 17:10Speaker 6: Fellas, your takes on this. Fire away.
- 17:14Speaker 4: Yeah, I think for me, Montour was the no-brainer, unanimous
- 17:21Speaker 4: Hall of Fame vote for a letter for me this year.
- 17:23Speaker 4: I think we're now entering year six of this organization.
- 17:29Speaker 4: There aren't a lot of folks from the previous, from
- 17:32Speaker 4: the expansion draft, from the previous regime here. You're trying
- 17:35Speaker 4: to turn things over. We've seen that on the staff
- 17:38Speaker 4: side and now on the player side. You're starting to
- 17:40Speaker 4: see guys, you know, they're cracking time come to an end. And,
- 17:44Speaker 4: you know, I've always said that this is one of
- 17:47Speaker 4: the more exciting parts for me, just watching the fan
- 17:53Speaker 4: base react to, wait, this has been my favorite player
- 17:56Speaker 4: for X amount of years. This guy got me into hockey.
- 18:00Speaker 4: What do you mean now they're leaving? But now they're
- 18:02Speaker 4: finding new players and they're finding new fan favorites. And
- 18:06Speaker 4: it's an exciting time.
- 18:07Speaker 2: And I think.
- 18:08Speaker 4: When you get new leadership, when you get new voices
- 18:11Speaker 4: in that locker room, it's an exciting time. And listen,
- 18:15Speaker 4: Brandon Montour didn't need the letter on his sweater to
- 18:21Speaker 4: be considered a leader. He is a player that numerous
- 18:24Speaker 4: guys will congregate around. They talked to. He's making the
- 18:29Speaker 4: rounds up and down the plane.
- 18:31Speaker 2: He's in the locker room. He's laughing. He's smiling.
- 18:34Speaker 4: He keeps things light. And I think that is so important.
- 18:38Speaker 4: especially for a young team. I've said many a time
- 18:43Speaker 4: that once Jordan Eberle's time here with Seattle is done,
- 18:46Speaker 4: I would pick Montour to be my next captain after
- 18:50Speaker 4: Jordan Eberle. So, I mean, maybe this could be the
- 18:53Speaker 4: beginning of the handoff, if you will. Eberle's got two
- 18:55Speaker 4: more years left on his deal. That's just my opinion.
- 18:59Speaker 4: But I think Brandon Montour, for my money, is going
- 19:03Speaker 4: to be– One of the best, one of the better
- 19:07Speaker 4: leaders on this team. He already is, but now you
- 19:10Speaker 4: make it official. You put a very much deserved letter
- 19:14Speaker 4: on his jersey, and he's going to continue doing what
- 19:17Speaker 4: he does best, and that's leading by example on the ice,
- 19:20Speaker 4: but especially in the locker room.
- 19:22Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, when you think about leaders, we talk
- 19:25Speaker 3: a lot about quiet leaders and not quiet leaders. I
- 19:31Speaker 3: think Montour is one of those not quiet leaders. Having
- 19:35Speaker 3: had a chance to spend some time with him recently,
- 19:37Speaker 3: he likes to make sure whoever's around him is engaged,
- 19:42Speaker 3: is ready to go, feeling good. And I think that
- 19:47Speaker 3: now there's this group, this group of five guys with, letters.
- 19:52Speaker 3: It's a good mix. I think of the five, Brandon
- 19:54Speaker 3: Montour is probably the most external. But then you get
- 19:57Speaker 3: quiet leaders like Adam Larson and like Vince Dunn. And
- 20:01Speaker 3: those guys are great as well because they feel like, hey,
- 20:04Speaker 3: I don't have to scream and shout and get in guys' face.
- 20:07Speaker 3: I just have to be the hardest working guy on
- 20:08Speaker 3: the ice. And that's how I'll lead. And I like
- 20:11Speaker 3: I like that mentality as well. And I would put,
- 20:13Speaker 3: you know, Maddie and Jordan Eberle somewhere in the middle
- 20:15Speaker 3: a little bit. You know, Eberle, obviously, as the captain
- 20:18Speaker 3: speaks up when needed. But, you know, he's not going
- 20:20Speaker 3: to be in your face all the time. And I
- 20:22Speaker 3: think Maddie's learning, you know, he's learning what kind of
- 20:24Speaker 3: captain he wants to be. So I think it's a
- 20:27Speaker 3: good group of leadership with differences in their personalities across
- 20:31Speaker 3: the board.
- 20:32Speaker 6: That for me is the biggest key here for this.
- 20:34Speaker 9: Is that it's not one collection of guys who are
- 20:37Speaker 9: sitting back.
- 20:38Speaker 6: In the room who are wearing a letter.
- 20:39Speaker 9: It's not a collection of guys who are going to
- 20:41Speaker 9: be in your face as well.
- 20:43Speaker 6: This is kind of the optimal.
- 20:45Speaker 9: Blend that you need to have for a leadership core
- 20:48Speaker 9: that's going to, I think, form the message for this season.
- 20:52Speaker 9: Eberle is a guy that he's not going to be
- 20:54Speaker 9: so much in your face, but he provides direction just
- 20:57Speaker 9: based on leadership. By example, we've heard this over and over.
- 21:00Speaker 9: Matty Beneers, and we'll get into this here. is becoming
- 21:04Speaker 9: more outspoken. You've got Vince Dunn, who has been outspoken.
- 21:08Speaker 9: He brings a certain brand of fire as well. Adam
- 21:11Speaker 9: Larson's right there to kind of move the needle back
- 21:13Speaker 9: the other way with quiet strength, if I can use
- 21:16Speaker 9: that term.
- 21:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I was going to talk about Vince Dunn.
- 21:19Speaker 4: You know, I think for him, you look at his
- 21:22Speaker 4: play on the ice from where he was day one
- 21:24Speaker 4: to where he is now. His gameplay has improved. His
- 21:27Speaker 4: defensive performance play has improved. Obviously, the offense has never
- 21:31Speaker 4: gone away. He's had some injury problems, but for the
- 21:34Speaker 4: most part, Vince Dunn has stayed at a very consistently
- 21:38Speaker 4: high level, and that is leadership by example. You're right.
- 21:44Speaker 4: Vince Dunn isn't the loudest guy. He's not the most
- 21:48Speaker 4: gregarious guy, but he's got some personality. He's good for
- 21:52Speaker 4: some one-liners every.
- 21:53Speaker 2: Now and again.
- 21:54Speaker 4: And he, I think, is going to lead in a
- 21:58Speaker 4: very different way, like you said, from a Brandon Montour,
- 22:03Speaker 4: from a Jordan Eberle, from Matty Beneers.
- 22:05Speaker 2: The mix is great.
- 22:06Speaker 4: I think Matty Beneers, we have said since he was
- 22:12Speaker 4: drafted that Matty Beneers is going to be that franchise
- 22:16Speaker 4: cornerstone piece, and every year we've seen him take another
- 22:20Speaker 4: step in his maturation. Last year, he added the defensive
- 22:24Speaker 4: element to his game. He became a strong, solid 200-foot player.
- 22:28Speaker 4: He'll tell you this year, I need to score more goals.
- 22:30Speaker 4: I want to score more goals. I want to be
- 22:32Speaker 4: more offensive. I want that from a captain, from a
- 22:35Speaker 4: leader as well. So everybody in this group, from Eberle,
- 22:40Speaker 4: who's been your captain, from Adam Larson, who's worn a letter,
- 22:43Speaker 4: and then you add in the two new guys with
- 22:46Speaker 4: Montour and Vince Dunn, I think that this group is
- 22:51Speaker 4: going to get a lot out of this team and, and,
- 22:54Speaker 4: you know, say what you want. I'm sick and tired
- 22:56Speaker 4: of the narratives around the hockey world. I think the
- 22:59Speaker 4: people that are leading this organization on the ice in
- 23:03Speaker 4: that locker room are going to get the most out
- 23:06Speaker 4: of the other, uh, what 17 guys, 18 guys in
- 23:09Speaker 4: that dressing room.
- 23:11Speaker 9: And also what's the big thing here to Al your
- 23:13Speaker 9: leadership is often a reflection of the coach.
- 23:17Speaker 3: A hundred percent. And not only that, too, I was
- 23:19Speaker 3: going to add that you lose Jaden Schwartz, who was
- 23:22Speaker 3: a cup winner, but you add Montour, who was a
- 23:24Speaker 3: cup winner. So you got two cup winners in Dunn
- 23:27Speaker 3: and Montour on that group of five as well, which
- 23:29Speaker 3: also helps set the stage for the other 17 or
- 23:32Speaker 3: 18 guys of what it takes to win a cup.
- 23:34Speaker 3: And I like that aspect as well.
- 23:37Speaker 9: All right, we've got more to get to, including some
- 23:39Speaker 9: pretty spicy comments from Matty Beneers made in The Athletic
- 23:43Speaker 9: several days ago.
- 23:45Speaker 6: But he had thoughts on the Jason Robertson saga. What
- 23:49Speaker 6: do we make out of Matty's comments?
- 23:51Speaker 9: Before that, a little slice of media day from Kraken
- 23:55Speaker 9: Community Iceplex as we sat down with Beneers. goaltender Joey
- 23:59Speaker 9: Decord and leading things off right here with the Kraken captain.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Buck played on the far wing side. There is John Marino.
- 24:05Speaker 3: Seattle keeps it alive.
- 24:07Speaker 5: McCann in front.
- 24:07Speaker 2: Larson right on.
- 24:08Speaker 3: The rebound.
- 24:09Speaker 6: Eberle scores. Jordan Eberle joining us once again. Welcome back.
- 24:16Speaker 6: Hope you had a great summer. The family also doing well. Yeah,
- 24:19Speaker 6: I know we're excited to be back.
- 24:21Speaker 10: Long summer, obviously missing the playoffs and just trying to
- 24:24Speaker 10: get your body right and tuned up and I think
- 24:26Speaker 10: you get to this point and you're just excited to
- 24:28Speaker 10: get going.
- 24:29Speaker 9: The two year extension kicking in now for you, which
- 24:32Speaker 9: pushes you to potentially seven years that would tie the
- 24:35Speaker 9: most longevity that you've had with any organization that tie
- 24:40Speaker 9: with Edmonton.
- 24:41Speaker 6: What does a legacy look like here to you?
- 24:46Speaker 10: Um, I mean, I've been here from the start. Um,
- 24:48Speaker 10: it's been fun and it's been exciting to be with
- 24:51Speaker 10: an organization from building blocks in the ground up. Um,
- 24:55Speaker 10: Our whole or my whole, you know, thought process behind
- 24:59Speaker 10: being here and from the start is just trying to
- 25:02Speaker 10: build a culture and building a team that people are
- 25:04Speaker 10: excited about and.
- 25:05Speaker 5: Bring hockey to the city. You know, we've we've done
- 25:09Speaker 5: that in spurts.
- 25:10Speaker 10: I think with hockey within Seattle, I look at the
- 25:12Speaker 10: rink being built in Kirkland and hockey becoming more. and
- 25:17Speaker 10: kids getting more into it in Seattle, which I really,
- 25:19Speaker 10: really love. But obviously making the playoffs the second year
- 25:23Speaker 10: and not making it the last three years has been
- 25:25Speaker 10: a bit of a disappointment, I think. To build hockey
- 25:27Speaker 10: in this city and the Washington greater area, we have
- 25:32Speaker 10: to win hockey games. And that's the biggest thing for
- 25:34Speaker 10: me this season is just the growth. We have a
- 25:37Speaker 10: lot of good young players. We have some good veteran
- 25:39Speaker 10: players in the mix. And we need to get back
- 25:41Speaker 10: to where we were for 75% of the year last
- 25:44Speaker 10: year and build on what.
- 25:45Speaker 2: We did then.
- 25:47Speaker 9: When's the last time a place in Seattle left a
- 25:49Speaker 9: great mark and a great impression on you and your family?
- 25:52Speaker 9: Just going around town.
- 25:54Speaker 6: Uh say one more time sure when's the last time.
- 25:57Speaker 9: Uh you know a spot a place somewhere around seattle
- 26:00Speaker 9: left a great impression for.
- 26:01Speaker 10: You yeah i mean there's many i mean for us
- 26:03Speaker 10: we you know we we enjoy exploring our kids love
- 26:06Speaker 10: getting out we went to the olympias uh last weekend
- 26:09Speaker 10: you know we've gone to bainbridge we've gone you know
- 26:12Speaker 10: we've done so many different places and my wife and
- 26:14Speaker 10: kids have done i think that's the biggest thing for
- 26:16Speaker 10: me is just getting outside and You know, it's just
- 26:19Speaker 10: such an amazing, the views, the sights, and the people.
- 26:22Speaker 10: I mean, really. And for me, coming here, I was
- 26:24Speaker 10: always a big Seahawks fan and the sports. This is
- 26:27Speaker 10: a really big, the sports fans here are incredible. You know,
- 26:30Speaker 10: from the Mariners, the Seahawks, to us, to the soccer team,
- 26:35Speaker 10: the Torrent. I mean, it goes on. We have it all,
- 26:37Speaker 10: and they're passionate about it. So I just enjoy the
- 26:40Speaker 10: vibe here in Seattle.
- 26:41Speaker 7: If you could pick.
- 26:43Speaker 9: one individual player or coach you would trade spots with
- 26:46Speaker 9: on the Seahawks for one day, who would it be?
- 26:50Speaker 10: We actually went to the Seahawks facility yesterday and met
- 26:52Speaker 10: a bunch of players and coaches and watched the practice.
- 26:55Speaker 10: I mean, JSN is obviously a pretty You know, he's
- 26:58Speaker 10: a stud now in this league. Yeah, he's he's grown
- 27:03Speaker 10: into one of the best wide wide outs in the league.
- 27:05Speaker 10: And I mean, Mike McDonald's done a heck of a
- 27:08Speaker 10: job there at such a young age. I think he's
- 27:10Speaker 10: only maybe a year or two older than me. So
- 27:12Speaker 10: it's pretty impressive to see him commanding a team like that.
- 27:14Speaker 9: At this stage of your career, guys will often say
- 27:16Speaker 9: that how you take care of your body is so important.
- 27:19Speaker 9: What's one specific drill that made a difference for you
- 27:22Speaker 9: in your offseason training?
- 27:25Speaker 6: Um, that's a good question.
- 27:27Speaker 10: I think, um, I've always gone with the approach every
- 27:30Speaker 10: summer and every season, you know, consistency is such a
- 27:33Speaker 10: hard thing to do in this leg and to, and
- 27:35Speaker 10: to last the game has gotten so fast and quick.
- 27:37Speaker 10: These kids are so skilled and, um, you're trying to
- 27:41Speaker 10: maintain yourself, but, you know, just being able to keep up,
- 27:44Speaker 10: you know, every summer you just, you try and find things,
- 27:46Speaker 10: whether it's your recovery, your diet, your training, just to
- 27:49Speaker 10: try and get three, four or 5% better. Um, and
- 27:52Speaker 10: as you go, you know, as you get older and
- 27:54Speaker 10: I'm in my, I think my 17th year, you know, that,
- 27:57Speaker 10: that just builds and builds and builds and you just
- 27:59Speaker 10: continue to try and build in what you've worked. So, um,
- 28:02Speaker 10: that's for me been the key to consistency and just
- 28:04Speaker 10: trying to maintain your foot speed.
- 28:06Speaker 5: That for sure is huge.
- 28:07Speaker 9: Give me one teammate from the past who had the
- 28:09Speaker 9: funniest superstition.
- 28:10Speaker 10: Um, from the past, you know, the one that pops up,
- 28:13Speaker 10: Brandon Tannev had a bunch of different quirks that he
- 28:16Speaker 10: would do. Um, you know, that was, that was one
- 28:19Speaker 10: that kind of sticks.
- 28:20Speaker 3: In my head. 335 to play in regulation.
- 28:23Speaker 4: Here's Matty Beneers, finds a soft spot, scores!
- 28:29Speaker 9: Back once again, center Matty Beneers. How much have you
- 28:32Speaker 9: been looking forward to the beginning of this season after
- 28:34Speaker 9: last April, Matty?
- 28:35Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm super excited. I think, you know, we got
- 28:38Speaker 5: a good group of guys. You know, we obviously added
- 28:42Speaker 5: Dougie and Mackie and I think we'll be good. I
- 28:46Speaker 5: think there's going to be a lot of guys taking
- 28:47Speaker 5: steps this year. Some growth with the team. We obviously
- 28:51Speaker 5: got the same coach with Lehner and coaching staff, so
- 28:54Speaker 5: I'm excited. Obviously, it's a long summer, especially when you
- 28:57Speaker 5: don't make playoffs. I think a lot of guys had
- 28:59Speaker 5: great summers, and we're ready to be back.
- 29:00Speaker 6: Remember when you first met Mackie as a kid growing up?
- 29:04Speaker 7: No.
- 29:05Speaker 2: No, you did not?
- 29:05Speaker 5: I remember playing against him when we were younger, but...
- 29:08Speaker 5: I don't remember, like, the exact moment we met. But, yeah, no,
- 29:12Speaker 5: we definitely played against each other when we were a
- 29:14Speaker 5: little younger and obviously made it to Michigan together. So
- 29:17Speaker 5: it's fun that we're here now.
- 29:18Speaker 9: What do you remember about him as a player back
- 29:19Speaker 9: in college that, you know, led you to believe that,
- 29:22Speaker 9: you know, a career at this level, you know, could
- 29:24Speaker 9: be possible?
- 29:25Speaker 5: Yeah, I always thought he was going to be playing
- 29:28Speaker 5: in the NHL. I think he's got the speed and
- 29:30Speaker 5: the skill and, you know, he thinks the game very well.
- 29:33Speaker 3: So....
- 29:35Speaker 5: Yeah, it was only a matter of time and obviously
- 29:37Speaker 5: he went into Florida and he really did a great job.
- 29:40Speaker 5: they obviously had a super stacked team and I felt
- 29:42Speaker 5: like he was making an impact every night and helping
- 29:44Speaker 5: those guys you know have success and obviously win when
- 29:48Speaker 5: they did and and so yeah I think it'll be
- 29:50Speaker 5: a you know I know he had success in Florida
- 29:54Speaker 5: but I really do think that it's going to be
- 29:56Speaker 5: a great change for him to come here and get
- 29:59Speaker 5: some more opportunity.
- 30:01Speaker 9: As far as on ice matters, can you name one
- 30:03Speaker 9: specific drill that made a difference in your off-season training?
- 30:06Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, there was a lot of them. I
- 30:10Speaker 5: think that we did a lot of little skill work,
- 30:12Speaker 5: like stick-wise in terms of passing and passing under sticks
- 30:15Speaker 5: and passing over sticks, saucing passes. We did a lot
- 30:20Speaker 5: of drills that had a lot of pressure on you.
- 30:23Speaker 5: I think that was you know, some of the biggest
- 30:25Speaker 5: things that I found, like down low pressure, picking up
- 30:28Speaker 5: rims and trying to make plays out front or trying
- 30:31Speaker 5: to get away from pressure. I think that was a
- 30:33Speaker 5: big part of my summer was trying to replicate what
- 30:37Speaker 5: it'd be like at full pace in a game as
- 30:39Speaker 5: much as possible. In the past, I think I've done
- 30:43Speaker 5: a lot more skill work that didn't have any pressure
- 30:46Speaker 5: or defense or anyone to get around. And that is good,
- 30:50Speaker 5: but it obviously changes when your time shrinks and when
- 30:53Speaker 5: you have you know, one to two seconds to make
- 30:55Speaker 5: the play out front to the guy that's open for,
- 30:58Speaker 5: you know, half a second. So that was mostly what
- 31:01Speaker 5: we worked on this summer was, you know, making plays
- 31:04Speaker 5: under pressure and making things realistic to what it would
- 31:07Speaker 5: be like in an NHL game.
- 31:08Speaker 9: Guys talk about often how much conditioning matters at this level.
- 31:12Speaker 9: What was the biggest key you think may be going
- 31:14Speaker 9: back to try to put on more weight, whether it
- 31:17Speaker 9: might be, you know, what you put in your body
- 31:18Speaker 9: food wise or what you do in the weight room?
- 31:22Speaker 5: In like in conditioning or, um, yeah, I mean, I
- 31:26Speaker 5: think I get most of my conditioning on ice. Obviously
- 31:28Speaker 5: a lot of guys do bikes. I did bikes this summer, but, um,
- 31:31Speaker 5: I feel like, you know, it was mostly getting in
- 31:34Speaker 5: the weight room for, you know, two hours, mostly, um,
- 31:39Speaker 5: Monday to Friday and, and then, you know, skating, whether
- 31:44Speaker 5: it was two times at the start of the summer
- 31:45Speaker 5: to three, then to four for the last, you know,
- 31:49Speaker 5: two months probably. Um, And it's just about trying to
- 31:54Speaker 5: figure out what you're burning and making sure you're above that,
- 31:56Speaker 5: making sure you're putting 1,000 to 2,000 calories more in
- 32:00Speaker 5: your body than what you burned off that day when
- 32:03Speaker 5: you worked out, skated, and played a golf round of 18.
- 32:07Speaker 5: So yeah, that was kind of my summer. It was
- 32:12Speaker 5: a lot of working out, skating, and then doing some golf.
- 32:15Speaker 9: I got a funny one for you. Give me one
- 32:17Speaker 9: teammate from the past, and you don't have to name
- 32:19Speaker 9: names here, but had the funniest superstition ever.
- 32:21Speaker 5: I don't know what it was. Like he had like
- 32:23Speaker 5: a million, but Donato's got to be up there.
- 32:26Speaker 9: Ryan Donato.
- 32:26Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:27Speaker 2: He's, he had, he had a.
- 32:28Speaker 5: Ton of supers. I mean, they worked like guys, you know,
- 32:32Speaker 5: he scored 42 years ago. So where it works clearly,
- 32:36Speaker 5: but yeah, he had a funny room and he knows
- 32:38Speaker 5: it too. He jokes about it. Like he understands his
- 32:41Speaker 5: warmup routine is pretty crazy, but, you know, it's to
- 32:44Speaker 5: each their own. If it works for you and you
- 32:46Speaker 5: feel the best out there, then you got to do it.
- 32:47Speaker 5: And I'm like all for it. Like, yeah, go do it.
- 32:50Speaker 5: If you're going to play well out there, you're going
- 32:52Speaker 5: to have.
- 32:53Speaker 3: Two goals tonight.
- 32:55Speaker 4: Do whatever you need to do.
- 33:03Speaker 6: Joining us now, Joey Decord back once again.
- 33:05Speaker 9: Joey, you look phenomenal. Welcome back to Seattle. What have
- 33:08Speaker 9: you missed about this place here in the last few months? Yeah,
- 33:10Speaker 9: it's great to be back. It's good to see all
- 33:11Speaker 9: the guys, all the staff, everyone. It's just an exciting
- 33:15Speaker 9: time of year.
- 33:15Speaker 8: It's really fun to see everybody again and get fired up.
- 33:18Speaker 7: For the new season.
- 33:19Speaker 6: You recently celebrated a birthday 30 years of age, correct?
- 33:23Speaker 7: Yeah, thanks for reminding me.
- 33:25Speaker 6: You look 25 and no more, though.
- 33:27Speaker 7: I feel 25, let me tell you.
- 33:29Speaker 9: What did life look like to you, honestly, five years ago,
- 33:33Speaker 9: and how much has that met your goals and expectations here?
- 33:37Speaker 8: Well, I think if you did kind of one of
- 33:38Speaker 8: those where am I going to be in five years things,
- 33:41Speaker 8: I would say I've exceeded expectations. Very happy, obviously super
- 33:46Speaker 8: grateful to be here playing for the Kraken and in
- 33:49Speaker 8: Seattle and grateful.
- 33:50Speaker 7: To the Kraken organization for giving the trust to me.
- 33:54Speaker 8: I've been with the team now since day one, you know,
- 33:57Speaker 8: with the American League team and now with Seattle. So
- 34:00Speaker 8: I feel like, you know, I've been with this organization
- 34:02Speaker 8: from the start. Um, very happy with where I'm at, but, uh,
- 34:06Speaker 8: feel very good about it.
- 34:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 34:07Speaker 8: What was the food spread like for your birthday? Big spread,
- 34:10Speaker 8: big spread. I had some steak, a little bit of
- 34:12Speaker 8: Mac and cheese, some fries. Um, my mom got me
- 34:15Speaker 8: a nice birthday cake.
- 34:16Speaker 7: She gets me, she gets me the same cake. She
- 34:18Speaker 7: used to get me when I was like six. It's
- 34:20Speaker 7: a hockey cake. It's so good.
- 34:21Speaker 9: Um, yeah.
- 34:22Speaker 2: Hilarious.
- 34:23Speaker 9: How does training differ now versus back in your twenties?
- 34:26Speaker 7: Back in my twenties, my twenties were like 30 days ago, dude.
- 34:29Speaker 6: I'll be specific.
- 34:32Speaker 7: Yeah. It's a lot different. Um, you know, at this point.
- 34:37Speaker 8: In my career, it's a lot more focused on longevity,
- 34:40Speaker 8: how I can prepare my body for, for a long season. Um,
- 34:44Speaker 8: and basically just optimizing every little thing that I can.
- 34:47Speaker 8: I think in, in college and when you're younger and you're,
- 34:50Speaker 8: you're pushing really hard to try.
- 34:51Speaker 7: To make the NHL, it's a little bit different.
- 34:53Speaker 8: Um, I would say it's a lot more like broad strokes,
- 34:58Speaker 8: I guess, because you're trying to put on muscle, you're
- 35:00Speaker 8: trying to put on weight, trying to fill out your frame,
- 35:03Speaker 8: versus now it's like, okay, I'm 30 years old, just
- 35:05Speaker 8: trying to optimize so that I can perform as well
- 35:07Speaker 8: as possible during the season.
- 35:09Speaker 9: Can you name one specific drill that makes a difference
- 35:12Speaker 9: in your off-season training? Tennis.
- 35:14Speaker 6: Tennis, really?
- 35:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 35:16Speaker 2: Why is that?
- 35:17Speaker 8: Tennis is my favorite thing to do in the off-season. Yeah,
- 35:19Speaker 8: the last couple summers I really, I played in high school.
- 35:21Speaker 8: But the last few summers, I really picked it up
- 35:23Speaker 8: big time again. I've been playing a ton. And there's
- 35:27Speaker 8: so many reasons why it's beneficial for me, but the
- 35:30Speaker 8: biggest one is just the way the energy systems work.
- 35:33Speaker 7: So, like, you think about a hockey game, you think
- 35:35Speaker 7: about a goalie.
- 35:36Speaker 8: The game, you know, it's 60 minutes, but it takes
- 35:38Speaker 8: two and a half to three hours to play the game.
- 35:42Speaker 7: Tennis is very similar to playing.
- 35:44Speaker 8: Goalie in that you're very active, you're explosive, hand-eye coordination,
- 35:48Speaker 8: processing speed, changing direction for.
- 35:51Speaker 7: About anywhere from five to, like, 20, 30 seconds. How
- 35:54Speaker 7: long is a tennis point?
- 35:55Speaker 3: Right.
- 35:55Speaker 7: You know?
- 35:56Speaker 8: But then you have to do it repetitively over hours
- 35:58Speaker 8: and hours. You know, on top of just, like I said,
- 36:01Speaker 8: the hand-eye coordination, the processing speeds.
- 36:05Speaker 7: And it's just fun. So that's been a huge addition
- 36:08Speaker 7: to my summer training, yeah.
- 36:09Speaker 9: This is your chance to plug your social media accounts.
- 36:13Speaker 9: Do it now.
- 36:14Speaker 6: Let us know where we're at.
- 36:14Speaker 7: I'm not much of a social media guy.
- 36:16Speaker 6: You're very active, though. You're very active. Very active.
- 36:19Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 36:20Speaker 7: I'm being sarcastic here.
- 36:22Speaker 6: I mean, just first off, where are you leaning more
- 36:24Speaker 6: into these days?
- 36:25Speaker 7: You're like Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, anything else? Full core press, everything.
- 36:30Speaker 7: Full core press. Yeah, for sure.
- 36:31Speaker 8: I'm really trying to get big in my YouTube. So
- 36:34Speaker 8: check out my YouTube channel. You'll see like lots of
- 36:38Speaker 8: behind the scenes stuff there. You'll see I had some,
- 36:41Speaker 8: you know, really close friends and family over for my
- 36:43Speaker 8: 30th birthday. Took you guys into my parents' house a
- 36:48Speaker 8: little bit and checked out my childhood bedroom, which... It's
- 36:52Speaker 8: pretty cool to see some of the stuff, some of
- 36:54Speaker 8: the hockey stuff. I had my first ever pair of
- 36:55Speaker 8: hockey skates that were like so.
- 36:57Speaker 7: Small in there.
- 36:58Speaker 8: My mom still has them. Yeah, tennis sessions, workout on ice.
- 37:01Speaker 8: You basically, you get to see what my summer looks like.
- 37:04Speaker 8: And hopefully you're going to have a lot more stuff
- 37:06Speaker 8: coming up this season, in season as well.
- 37:09Speaker 7: So just trying to let people in a little bit
- 37:11Speaker 7: and get more behind the scenes.
- 37:12Speaker 9: Some guys lean into it. ton these days and it's
- 37:15Speaker 9: a different game than say versus you know even just
- 37:18Speaker 9: you know roughly 10 years ago but for you what
- 37:20Speaker 9: does being active in social media mean to you.
- 37:22Speaker 7: As an athlete well I think.
- 37:25Speaker 8: I think it's an area of sports that's really become
- 37:28Speaker 8: popular in the last few years and I think I
- 37:30Speaker 8: honestly think hockey is behind the curve compared to some
- 37:33Speaker 8: of the other big sports on that stuff I think
- 37:36Speaker 8: some of the stigma around it with hockey is that
- 37:38Speaker 8: it like takes away from the team when in reality
- 37:41Speaker 8: it doesn't at all like I'm doing the same things,
- 37:44Speaker 8: whether I would have a camera there or not.
- 37:47Speaker 7: Um, and it's not about like making about myself.
- 37:50Speaker 8: I think it's just giving more access to the fans,
- 37:52Speaker 8: giving people what they want to see.
- 37:54Speaker 7: Like I watch other guys, YouTube all the time. Like
- 37:56Speaker 7: I love watching Erling, Erling Holland's YouTube. I think it's fascinating.
- 38:00Speaker 8: So, you know, and I'm a professional athlete, so, uh, I,
- 38:04Speaker 8: I would love to see more behind the scenes from everybody.
- 38:06Speaker 8: Like I would have loved to seen behind the scenes,
- 38:08Speaker 8: YouTube videos of Roger Federer, Tom Brady, when they were,
- 38:12Speaker 8: you know, in their prime. Um, So I just think
- 38:15Speaker 8: it's important. I think it's really cool, especially with where
- 38:18Speaker 8: technology is nowadays. It's really not hard to produce. So
- 38:23Speaker 8: I enjoy it. I think it's really cool. Yes, I'm
- 38:26Speaker 8: going to keep keep pushing forward with.
- 38:27Speaker 9: All right, that's school tender Joey Decor. Plus, also big
- 38:30Speaker 9: thanks to him with Captain Jordan Eberle and for Matty Beneers.
- 38:33Speaker 6: By the way, all those Meet.
- 38:35Speaker 9: The Kraken interviews, we'll have those rolling out all season
- 38:38Speaker 9: long on our Global Credit Union Kraken Audio Network broadcast.
- 38:42Speaker 9: Also via social media, check out Instagram, 93.3 KJR. Also
- 38:48Speaker 9: on Twitter and X. We'll still call it Twitter here
- 38:51Speaker 9: for the sake of calling it Twitter. The Global Credit
- 38:53Speaker 9: Union Kraken Audio Network. You can find that account, by
- 38:56Speaker 9: the way, at X at Kraken Audio Net. Everett now
- 39:00Speaker 9: back with me once again. I want to get into
- 39:03Speaker 9: Matty Beneers' comments here from the other day. And when
- 39:05Speaker 9: I filled in for the Greg Bell show on KJR,
- 39:07Speaker 9: I had John Forslund on with me, and he offered
- 39:09Speaker 9: his take on this. But this is, I think, going
- 39:12Speaker 9: to really set up two things. Number one, just from
- 39:18Speaker 9: the window dressing of this, A very interesting complexion of
- 39:23Speaker 9: when Dallas comes into town. Without question, first five years,
- 39:28Speaker 9: the guy who was booed the loudest on the ice
- 39:30Speaker 9: was Kale McCarr. When the Avalanche came in here, and
- 39:33Speaker 9: I should say really more so second-year playoffs and then
- 39:35Speaker 9: from that point on, does Jason Robertson give him a
- 39:39Speaker 9: run for his money? Because here's Matty Beneers and his
- 39:42Speaker 9: thoughts in The Athletic on if he took Jason Robertson's
- 39:47Speaker 9: rejection of the sign-and-trade to Seattle... personally. Veneers told The Athletic, yeah, absolutely.
- 39:56Speaker 9: There's a tough rep about Seattle because it's rainy and
- 39:59Speaker 9: maybe the city, but guys love it in Seattle, the
- 40:03Speaker 9: guys that are there. When the sun's out, it's beautiful.
- 40:06Speaker 9: There's so much nature. There are a lot of things
- 40:09Speaker 9: to do. So yeah, it obviously doesn't feel good when
- 40:12Speaker 9: you're on a team and you try to get someone
- 40:14Speaker 9: else and they don't want to come. But at the
- 40:17Speaker 9: same time, If you don't want to be here, we
- 40:22Speaker 9: don't want you anyway. Quote unquote, that from Matty Beneers
- 40:27Speaker 9: to the athletic. The foundation has been laid. And I
- 40:32Speaker 9: thought some pretty important words here from a leader on
- 40:35Speaker 9: this team. My thoughts are number one, fantastic. He took
- 40:40Speaker 9: it personally and he should take it personally. That's a
- 40:44Speaker 9: guy who told you and your group, I don't want
- 40:47Speaker 9: to come play with you. So hockey players have long memories,
- 40:52Speaker 9: circle the dates on the calendar. Maybe when the crack
- 40:55Speaker 9: and play the Dallas stars number two as well, I
- 40:59Speaker 9: think maybe a foundational seed here for some guys to really, really,
- 41:04Speaker 9: really get a bird in their saddle over this and
- 41:07Speaker 9: begin to build this thing here for the long term out.
- 41:10Speaker 6: Fitz, I'll take it away. Your take on this.
- 41:13Speaker 2: I love it personally.
- 41:14Speaker 4: I think this was great. I, I, I've always disagreed
- 41:20Speaker 4: with the bulletin board material in pro sports. You're making
- 41:24Speaker 4: millions of dollars. And if a comment from me is
- 41:27Speaker 4: going to get you off your game that much like, dude,
- 41:30Speaker 4: what are you doing here? I think it's a great comment.
- 41:32Speaker 4: He's standing up for his team. He's standing up for
- 41:35Speaker 4: his city. He's made a long-term commitment.
- 41:38Speaker 2: Matty Beneers has.
- 41:40Speaker 4: And I've said this before. I don't care who you are.
- 41:42Speaker 4: I don't care if you're Connor McDavid. I don't care
- 41:45Speaker 4: if you're prime Wayne Gretzky. If you don't want to
- 41:47Speaker 4: be here, I don't want you here. I don't care
- 41:50Speaker 4: how good you are. I don't care what you've done.
- 41:52Speaker 4: I want people in that dressing room who want to
- 41:56Speaker 4: be in that dressing room. Brandon Montour said it from
- 41:58Speaker 4: the time he got signed here. Chandler Stevenson as well.
- 42:02Speaker 4: This is a team that wanted me from day one
- 42:04Speaker 4: when considering my options. My family and I kept coming
- 42:08Speaker 4: back to Seattle, an organization that's building something. I want
- 42:11Speaker 4: to be a part of it. That's the guy that
- 42:13Speaker 4: I want here.
- 42:15Speaker 2: When I heard those comments, I stood up. I cheered.
- 42:18Speaker 4: I'm 10 toes, 10 fingers down on those comments.
- 42:22Speaker 2: More of it. I need more of it.
- 42:24Speaker 4: I want more of it.
- 42:26Speaker 2: Seattle versus everybody.
- 42:29Speaker 4: Um i applaud maddie for saying it i know that
- 42:32Speaker 4: it is not easy to to say those things hockey
- 42:36Speaker 4: is a very much speak softly but carry a big
- 42:40Speaker 4: stick no grab the bullhorn and your big spic and
- 42:44Speaker 4: your big stick and and speak your mind i love
- 42:48Speaker 4: everything he.
- 42:48Speaker 6: Said maddie benears wants so many more fans al oh yeah.
- 42:52Speaker 3: Yeah Yeah, I think so. And when you're talking about
- 42:55Speaker 3: the regular season, you're talking about 200-plus days. Half of
- 43:00Speaker 3: those days, you're not even in Seattle. So, you know,
- 43:03Speaker 3: if you're not coming to Seattle because you don't like rain, well,
- 43:06Speaker 3: half the time you're here during the regular season, you're
- 43:08Speaker 3: somewhere else. Or a second layer.
- 43:11Speaker 6: Who cares?
- 43:12Speaker 3: Right. And obviously, the summer, as Everett likes to say,
- 43:15Speaker 3: is undefeated as far as weather goes. So, I think
- 43:19Speaker 3: that's a weak reason for not... wanting to come to Seattle.
- 43:23Speaker 3: I think at the end of the day, a player
- 43:25Speaker 3: doesn't not want to play with the guys on the roster.
- 43:29Speaker 3: He might like and respect all of them. But for
- 43:32Speaker 3: whatever reason, he chose something else. And maybe it's not
- 43:36Speaker 3: because of Seattle. Maybe it's because of something else that
- 43:39Speaker 3: they wanted that Seattle could never offer. But Matty's point
- 43:43Speaker 3: is spot on. I don't want to play with somebody
- 43:46Speaker 3: that doesn't want to be here in Seattle, whether it's
- 43:49Speaker 3: they don't like the city, they don't like the team,
- 43:51Speaker 3: I don't want to play with that guy because I
- 43:53Speaker 3: know I'm never going to get 100% out of them.
- 43:56Speaker 3: There's always going to be a certain part of them
- 43:57Speaker 3: that's like, yeah, I don't want to be here, so
- 44:01Speaker 3: I'm not going to go that extra mile on that
- 44:03Speaker 3: shift in that game, in this series, whatever. I want
- 44:07Speaker 3: guys that believe in the team, that believe in the
- 44:09Speaker 3: front office, that love being here, laying it on the
- 44:13Speaker 3: line every day.
- 44:15Speaker 9: Let's wrap this up here just with a couple of
- 44:16Speaker 9: quick thoughts. And first I'll get to who we maybe
- 44:19Speaker 9: pick as a camp dark horse. And I'll begin with,
- 44:23Speaker 9: I think this, there's so many questions as far as
- 44:26Speaker 9: who's going to fit on this roster.
- 44:28Speaker 6: Jason Botterill said as many as.
- 44:29Speaker 9: Eight forwards, 23 or younger could be here by October
- 44:33Speaker 9: one for opening night. I am so inclined to pick
- 44:36Speaker 9: Jacob Melanson, but I think already you can maybe pencil
- 44:40Speaker 9: him in right now as it's his spot to lose
- 44:43Speaker 9: on the fourth line. So I'm going to go here
- 44:45Speaker 9: to the tough guy, Curtis Douglas. It's not just the
- 44:48Speaker 9: fact that he brings size at 6'9. I mean, you
- 44:52Speaker 9: just look at him the wrong way, maybe on the ice,
- 44:55Speaker 9: and you're scared as far as out of your gourd
- 44:58Speaker 9: to even look at him, let alone fight him. But
- 45:02Speaker 9: he's got some AHL experience elsewhere. Jason Botterill's already said
- 45:07Speaker 9: he's looking forward to seeing him in the lineup this year.
- 45:10Speaker 9: There could be a spot for him already. 13 forward maybe,
- 45:13Speaker 9: but I watched him a little bit when the veterans
- 45:16Speaker 9: were skating together about a couple of days ago informally.
- 45:19Speaker 9: He's got kind of an underrated set of hands. A
- 45:23Speaker 9: couple plays that he made that I thought that, you know,
- 45:26Speaker 9: for a typical.
- 45:27Speaker 6: Enforcer, maybe out of their league. But he looked comfortable
- 45:31Speaker 6: as well with the puck.
- 45:32Speaker 9: And in this day and age of the NHL, if
- 45:35Speaker 9: you can fight, great, but you better have a decent
- 45:38Speaker 9: set of wheels and or a decent set of hands.
- 45:42Speaker 9: It wouldn't surprise me if Curtis Douglas takes a few
- 45:45Speaker 9: extra names here in training camp, but turns a lot
- 45:48Speaker 9: of heads for a player that was maybe battling behind
- 45:51Speaker 9: guys like Oscar Fisk or Mulgar, Jacob Melanson, Yanni Newman, etc.
- 45:56Speaker 9: My dark horse pick is Curtis Douglas, guys.
- 45:59Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, Mike, the days have changed where we
- 46:02Speaker 3: had 10 preseason games and you probably fought, if you
- 46:05Speaker 3: were Curtis Douglas, in just about every one of them,
- 46:08Speaker 3: trying to send a message to the teams you were
- 46:11Speaker 3: playing about to the role you were going to play.
- 46:13Speaker 3: I think his role is known and you probably won't
- 46:15Speaker 3: see him fight at all in any of the preseason,
- 46:17Speaker 3: but I think when it comes to cracking the lineup
- 46:20Speaker 3: and first game of the season. Yeah, he's a question
- 46:23Speaker 3: mark for me as well, because I think that he's
- 46:26Speaker 3: a tool for the Kraken. I think how often, how
- 46:30Speaker 3: frequently that tool is needed is unknown yet. I think
- 46:34Speaker 3: just having him on the roster is, is a tool. Meaning,
- 46:38Speaker 3: if I'm an opposing player and I'm looking at running
- 46:41Speaker 3: over Berkley Catton or Matty Beneers, I'm looking at that roster.
- 46:45Speaker 3: I know that roster and Curtis Douglas might not be
- 46:48Speaker 3: on the bench but I'm pretty sure he'll be on
- 46:50Speaker 3: the bench the next time I see him if I
- 46:52Speaker 3: run over one of those guys. So I think he's
- 46:55Speaker 3: a valid tool just even having him on the roster.
- 46:58Speaker 3: Other question marks for me for opening night, I'm looking
- 47:03Speaker 3: forward to seeing a guy like Ben Myers, where he
- 47:07Speaker 3: fits in. I mentioned Yanni Newman earlier. What's his role
- 47:11Speaker 3: look like coming out of training camp? But I think
- 47:13Speaker 3: there's even broader questions that go beyond opening night. what
- 47:17Speaker 3: does Shane Wright season look like? You know, what is
- 47:20Speaker 3: a full 84 game season of Bobby McMahon look like?
- 47:24Speaker 3: So there's some questions that go beyond game one for
- 47:27Speaker 3: me that I'll be, I'll be watching closely, but as
- 47:30Speaker 3: far as, as the roster goes, yeah, I'd say Yanni
- 47:33Speaker 3: Newman and Ben Myers. Those are the two big ones
- 47:35Speaker 3: for me.
- 47:37Speaker 2: Yeah. My I've got two, I've got one up front.
- 47:39Speaker 4: I've got one on defense and, and I went super
- 47:42Speaker 4: out of the way with this one, my.
- 47:44Speaker 2: Dark horse up front. is Leighton Rode.
- 47:47Speaker 4: The Kraken signed him out of Bemidji State back in
- 47:51Speaker 4: 24 after a 30-point season there in college, and then
- 47:55Speaker 4: he scored in the American Hockey League. He put up
- 47:58Speaker 4: seven points in 12 playoff games last year, 13 goals
- 48:01Speaker 4: two years ago, 11 last year. He's gotten more points
- 48:04Speaker 4: in each of his last.
- 48:05Speaker 2: Two seasons, 26 and 38.
- 48:07Speaker 4: I know we talk a lot about the middle six
- 48:09Speaker 4: for the Seattle Kraken and how this team was a
- 48:11Speaker 4: lot of middle six depth guys, but I think Leighton
- 48:14Speaker 4: Rode can be this year's Jacob Melanson, this year's Oscar Fisker-Molgaard,
- 48:20Speaker 4: the guy that you went into camp and then you
- 48:24Speaker 4: left yourself saying, oh, this guy is going to play
- 48:27Speaker 4: some NHL games this year.
- 48:28Speaker 6: I like the.
- 48:29Speaker 4: Way he played at 24 years old, a little bit older.
- 48:33Speaker 4: I got to watch him in the playoffs a couple
- 48:34Speaker 4: of years ago, and he's got a really– in the
- 48:37Speaker 4: AHL playoffs, and he's got a really good handle, I think,
- 48:41Speaker 4: on the pro game. I've talked to Evan Pitnick, the
- 48:44Speaker 4: Coachella Valley PR guy, radio guy, and he's said multiple
- 48:47Speaker 4: times that Leighton Road could be a dark horse. And
- 48:51Speaker 4: that's the uneasy one. Obviously, you've got Perkis. You've got
- 48:55Speaker 4: Oscar Fiskermolgar, Yanni Newman.
- 48:56Speaker 2: We've seen.
- 48:57Speaker 4: And those guys, we know the book on those guys.
- 48:59Speaker 4: But I think Leighton Road could be a dark horse.
- 49:01Speaker 4: And then on defense, Tyson Jugnoff. I mean, the Kraken
- 49:05Speaker 4: need to find a way. Yeah, the Kraken need to
- 49:08Speaker 4: replace Jamie Oleksiak. And like I said, there's only really
- 49:12Speaker 4: one spot up for grabs on the blue line.
- 49:14Speaker 2: And I think that.
- 49:17Speaker 4: Chase Reed, depending on his year, is going to have success.
- 49:20Speaker 4: NHL time at the end of the year.
- 49:22Speaker 2: But I could.
- 49:22Speaker 4: See Tyson Jugnoff making a real strong case for the
- 49:28Speaker 4: opening night roster in training camp this year.
- 49:30Speaker 6: Looking forward to it.
- 49:31Speaker 9: We said we would keep this 40 minutes or less.
- 49:34Speaker 6: We're doing it here for today.
- 49:35Speaker 9: We got places to go, but we can't wait here
- 49:37Speaker 9: for day one of camp. And we're on the air, boys. Saturday,
- 49:43Speaker 9: preseason hockey. We're looking forward to it. Get the mics
- 49:47Speaker 9: back in front of our faces.
- 49:48Speaker 6: Headsets on.
- 49:48Speaker 2: Ready to go.
- 49:49Speaker 4: Oh, I can't wait. I got the throat lozenges and
- 49:52Speaker 4: the tea ready to go. Mike, you're in mid-season form already, buddy.
- 49:55Speaker 3: I keep giving my wife the three keys to the
- 49:58Speaker 3: day every day, and she hates it. She's ready to
- 50:02Speaker 3: get rid of me.
- 50:03Speaker 6: Time to get out of the house. We're on air
- 50:05Speaker 6: 6 p.m.
- 50:05Speaker 9: Kraken Canucks on Saturday on 950 KJR, the 20th at Calgary.
- 50:11Speaker 9: Back-to-back scheduled and wrapping up. Calgary on the 24th. Vancouver
- 50:15Speaker 9: the 26th. October 1 officially.
- 50:17Speaker 6: It's go time.
- 50:18Speaker 9: Big thanks Everett now and for you for also dialing
- 50:21Speaker 9: us up. Enjoy a training camp for overtime.
- 50:24Speaker 3: I'm Mike.
- 50:24Speaker 6: See ya. Your home for the Kraken.
- 50:26Speaker 1: Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM.
