- 0:01Speaker 1: Local news now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Sarah Strickland. Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne will announce an
- 0:09Speaker 2: extension of the gas tax holiday at a press conference
- 0:13Speaker 2: in Ottawa today. The Liberals temporarily suspended the federal 10-cent-per-liter
- 0:18Speaker 2: excise tax on gas in April when the war in
- 0:20Speaker 2: Iran caused global fuel prices to spike. The excise tax
- 0:24Speaker 2: suspension was supposed to end after Labor Day, but a
- 0:27Speaker 2: government official confirms the tax will not be reimposed next week.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Summer heat is slowly giving way to fall chill, and
- 0:37Speaker 2: that means frost warnings for much of the island tonight.
- 0:40Speaker 2: The West Coast, South Coast, Central Newfoundland, and the metro
- 0:43Speaker 2: region are under a risk of frost overnight, with temperatures,
- 0:46Speaker 2: especially in low-lying areas, dropping into the single digits. David Neal,
- 0:51Speaker 2: a meteorologist with the Gander Weather Office, says the number
- 0:54Speaker 2: of 20-degree days will grow fewer as we march through September.
- 0:58Speaker 1: So yeah, it's definitely, we're getting to that time of
- 1:00Speaker 1: year where you're going to have to start thinking about
- 1:02Speaker 1: if you haven't started harvesting some of your plants and
- 1:05Speaker 1: stuff like that, it's going to be, we're getting into
- 1:07Speaker 1: that type of season where they may have to start
- 1:09Speaker 1: taking some precautions on these cooler, colder nights.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Some barbecue utensils distributed throughout Canada have been recalled by
- 1:17Speaker 2: the federal government. Cuisinart metal wire bristle grill brushes can
- 1:22Speaker 2: fragment and stick to the food or grill. If ingested,
- 1:26Speaker 2: even one of those bristles can end up requiring surgery.
- 1:30Speaker 2: As of August 26, the company, Crate & Barrel Canada,
- 1:33Speaker 2: had not received any reports of injury. Consumers should quit
- 1:36Speaker 2: using the items immediately and contact the company for a refund.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Questions are being raised about how to enforce or verify
- 1:45Speaker 2: the age of young users after the introduction of Bill C-34,
- 1:49Speaker 2: new proposed federal legislation barring kids under 16 from access
- 1:53Speaker 2: to social media accounts. The legislation will allow for exemptions
- 1:58Speaker 2: if companies can prove they have created and implemented robust
- 2:02Speaker 2: safety features. Tech expert Kevin Andrews says although he thinks
- 2:06Speaker 2: protecting younger people on social media is important, Age verification
- 2:10Speaker 2: remains a difficult sticking point.
- 2:13Speaker 3: We want everybody, including adults, uploading identification to a social
- 2:17Speaker 3: media company just to prove they're old enough to use it.
- 2:21Speaker 3: And I think that's where it gets complicated. We want
- 2:24Speaker 3: to protect the 13-year-olds' privacy and safety, but you don't
- 2:28Speaker 3: necessarily want to create another system where millions of Canadians
- 2:31Speaker 3: have to hand over all of their personal information to
- 2:34Speaker 3: a technology company.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Canadian Tire and Tim Hortons are hoping to perk up
- 2:39Speaker 2: their customer bases by linking their loyalty programs starting today.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Under a partnership between the home goods retailer and coffee giant,
- 2:48Speaker 2: millions of customers who link their Triangle and Tim's Rewards
- 2:51Speaker 2: accounts will earn between 2 and 5% in Canadian Tire
- 2:54Speaker 2: money in addition to Tim's points on select Tim's purchases.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Canadian Tire money can be redeemed for savings on purchases
- 3:02Speaker 2: at the retailer, as well as its other banners, including
- 3:05Speaker 2: Sport Check, Mercs, and Party City. Tim's points can be
- 3:09Speaker 2: used to purchase food and beverages at the chain. That's
- 3:12Speaker 2: your news. I'm Sarah Strickland.
