- 0:17We're almost gave up drinking. I could bang the three and I
- 0:27ain't even started exercise. Welcome back to the boundary
- 0:53Corner podcast. My name is Curtis Wilson along
- 0:56with my co-host bronzy glow. Hey buddy, I almost gave up
- 1:06drinking but then the game happened today.
- 1:10Jesus did that game where the I definitely went full fat kid
- 1:19mode in like 8 and drink my feelings after that game.
- 1:24Rough game and pokies. Fall to the Tar, Heels 56:45.
- 1:31We're drinking our feelings away with drinking till we don't feel
- 1:34feelings anymore. I'm holding a mother, Sam Adams
- 1:37Boston, Lager Brian's probably, would you pick up tonight,
- 1:41Brett, the brick wrecking Bachmann been rolling.
- 1:44The brecon böck crime Squad and Bach.
- 1:47It's after midnight. The Highlight just came on
- 1:51SportsCenter about two minutes before we hit record.
- 1:53And so, even more freaking ain't little salt in the wound there,
- 1:58this salting like we're sitting here talking through the stuff
- 2:01anyway. And it's like, oh, here it is
- 2:03again, right in the side. So guys, you know, 56:45 in one,
- 2:12just kind of wild crazy game. We're going to hit some few
- 2:18things here tonight. Looking at tape looking at some
- 2:22breakdowns Galahad a stop in the middle of the game and head over
- 2:26to a kid's birthday party. But I think he was able to come
- 2:29back, get enough of the viewings, unfortunately, of the
- 2:33remaining parts of the second half he missed, it wasn't scored
- 2:37some points in that they can happen.
- 2:39Wow, I mean, yeah, everyone points to use those.
- 2:42I mean, if I told you, we put a 45 and 260 on the ground.
- 2:46Hell we're probably thinking shit lie.
- 2:48Ali won this game, but I thought that was a 10 point win, but no,
- 2:51a laugh. Let's hit it up, Brian.
- 2:55Let's get it rolling. Let's start with the what you
- 2:58said you wanted to focus on Virginia Tech's defense today
- 3:02and let us start with this. Brian coming in you and he was
- 3:06rushing for 168 yards, a game, that's not bad, pretty good them
- 3:12sumbitches, tripled that up. Pretty much today.
- 3:17Yes yeah not good at all the one-two punch of Williams and
- 3:22Michael Carter-Williams with 169 yards on the ground quarter with
- 3:27214 and Brian. We've been going back and forth.
- 3:31What the hell happened to our linebacker Corps today?
- 3:36Man, I was watching the game. I went back and watched some
- 3:42tape later, man, the linebackers play, probably the worst game
- 3:45I've seen them play Since since stuff.
- 3:49So, I've watched this unit play together.
- 3:52You know, Richard Ashby didn't have a great game Dax.
- 3:56Hollifield had a horrible game, Alan Tisdale was Good in spots
- 4:04and bad and spots. And it was just bad all around
- 4:08man. They played timid.
- 4:10They got bad reads and they did not tackle.
- 4:13Well. I like that's the trifecta right
- 4:15there. Like what three things?
- 4:19Well, maybe it's a different outcome, right?
- 4:21If you've been at least tackle, which is one thing we emphasize
- 4:25they needed to do in this game if we wanted to win, if you at
- 4:28least a car while you probably take maybe 10 points off the
- 4:32board. They're so in that that might
- 4:35have been enough to, to pull out a victory, or at least have a
- 4:37chance there at the end. But damn, dude, we did not do
- 4:41it. I mean, it was, it was, it was
- 4:44bad. It really showed the lack of
- 4:47athleticism that we have at the linebacker position, they were
- 4:52up on us at the second level pretty much.
- 4:56Every time they ran the ball, Like even when we did the right
- 5:01thing that they were getting five and six yard games and the
- 5:03running game, like it was, it was bad, but it was as bad as
- 5:07I've seen our run rush defense ever, why don't you send me
- 5:12some, some screenshots? And some of them it just looked
- 5:15like we were taking just horrible steps.
- 5:17Like, you know, one of the ones you sent me on was Tisdale
- 5:21essentially flowing back up to Brooks position.
- 5:26And what does that was? That huge run that massive what?
- 5:3040? 50 yard, run?
- 5:32Yes, 40-yard running Williams, got nudged out on the sidelines.
- 5:37I think the Run started at about the 20 and then they ended up on
- 5:41the other side like 38 yard line.
- 5:44So I mean it was it was a big run and you know what happened
- 5:48was kind of kind of simple there.
- 5:50So, you know you had Tisdale that got a bad read ended up
- 5:54about one gallon Gap further to the to the right of the
- 5:58formation. And he should have been and that
- 6:02left a big hole and then Matheny was a little late with the plug
- 6:05missed the tackle. And all of a sudden, you got
- 6:07this huge gain down the sideline, which if Tisdale made
- 6:12the raid read, he's probably there to assist Matheny making
- 6:15that play in The Gap. Instead of chasing the play, I
- 6:21mean, Tisdale got got blocked and he blocked wrote for me.
- 6:26Never pursue their because the guy that was supposed to blog
- 6:30work ended up blocking Tisdale on that play to the when you
- 6:36talked about it, if he steps into that Gap, the running back
- 6:41in either face them head-on because the way that the way
- 6:43that run was blocked, he would have been unblocked in the Gap.
- 6:47Yeah. I mean, it's the guy can't hit
- 6:49him and take the two or three yard game, Mort's.
- 6:52The hump. And we see any constitute a man?
- 6:56No, they were getting to their spot when they wanted to just
- 6:59about every play and that like I said, we talked about it a
- 7:04couple weeks ago like when when you're able to get to your spot
- 7:07as a running back that gives you options and what you can do with
- 7:10the cutbacks or getting up the alley like you at least have
- 7:14options and we gave them options all day.
- 7:18They were able to get to the second level and kind of pick
- 7:22their poison with based on what was left in the back end.
- 7:26And when you couple that with not tackling well across the
- 7:30board but especially if the linebacking position is trouble,
- 7:33man, it's a big, big clusterfuck of a mess.
- 7:38Let me ask you, is to go, just going forward because we're
- 7:40going to hit a couple other things here.
- 7:43The problem you call it a day, are they?
- 7:46Fixable they are fixable but it's going to take.
- 7:51I think if we play another Elite level team that has this effort,
- 7:56This is woman, runs this type of offense and has Lyman that can
- 8:02push around our defensive tackles a little bit.
- 8:05We're going to still struggle because I don't think we have
- 8:10enough athleticism at the linebacking position to kind of
- 8:13offset some of those shortcomings.
- 8:17Now, I think if you had Devon Diablo and Kiante Jenkins in the
- 8:21game, I think some of that gets cleaned up on the back end but I
- 8:26Think we're in till we kind of get better Personnel on the
- 8:29defensive tackle area that can kind of occupy space and not get
- 8:33moved out of the Gap like because it's definitely a it
- 8:37trickles kind of up to the different levels.
- 8:39I think our defensive tackles did a good job of shooting the
- 8:42gaps. The problem with that is that
- 8:45with the way they're running the RPO and how efficient they were,
- 8:50they were getting rid of the ball, so shooting the gaps
- 8:52didn't really benefit us in the the pass Rush game.
- 8:56And because of what they were, they were getting so much
- 8:59movement with the on the defensive tackles.
- 9:02So I think guards were getting down blocks, and they were just
- 9:05moving those defensive tackles out of the Gap.
- 9:08So even though they were in the right place, the Gap was getting
- 9:11mu. That means the holes getting
- 9:12wider something into. Guys, I love Matheny because the
- 9:18guy plays with hard, he tries his hardest but he still a third
- 9:22string. Walk on, let me ask you this,
- 9:25I'm going to move this up. Up a couple rungs on our
- 9:27rundown. How many, how many points do you
- 9:31think have in kyanka, and Deedee would have made a day?
- 9:34How many points walked by 11:00, would it have been just two or
- 9:38three? I think they say would touch
- 9:40down because there's a couple places where I think Diablo
- 9:44would have been in there. Making the tackle Matheny,
- 9:48missed a couple at the. I think a couple he was late
- 9:51getting his film which meant that the running back could
- 9:55stick it. Of the dirt, widen his angle and
- 9:58get to the sideline instead of having to getting getting met
- 10:02kind of right in the hole that, you know, we're dividing or
- 10:06Jenkins would have filled their. So there's definitely areas
- 10:10where we would have got been better with those guys in the
- 10:12game. But at the same time it would
- 10:16have been. We distill given up a lot of
- 10:18points because it was kind of a weird have been dealing more
- 10:22with a death by a Thousand Cuts than You know some of those big
- 10:27cashing runs and ended up going for touchdowns are going for 30,
- 10:3040 yard gains. All right.
- 10:34Well I hear that that that makes me think different because when
- 10:37you're not gassing, the more plays a team has to run the more
- 10:41chance that areas, the more chance that incompletions the
- 10:43more chance. It good things happening for the
- 10:46Hokies. So now let me let me ask this
- 10:50next tomorrow Connor gets hit with the targeting objection so
- 10:54we won't listen next week, thank goodness.
- 10:57But how big did that hurt us? Especially in the running it
- 10:59because it was very early, it was very early in the first
- 11:02quarter. It was one of those.
- 11:06This is where I think you feel Collegiate needs to adjust
- 11:10because how was up, when essentially Shamari was coming,
- 11:16and then with where, how went how tomorrow his head was, he
- 11:21gets injected how much of not having him?
- 11:25Do you think affected the Run game throughout the day?
- 11:29It definitely hurting the Run game especially as the game wore
- 11:33on. I mean, we were Already thin at
- 11:35those positions coming in because of the two big guys
- 11:40being out. And you know, some of the other
- 11:42guys that we had at that play quarterback, you know, not being
- 11:45in. So, we were already thin there
- 11:47and we got obviously thinner once once.
- 11:49Connor went went out with the ejection there and that would
- 11:53have helped in the Run game honestly, and they were good in
- 11:56the Run game before he left, but they were actually taking more
- 12:00advantage of Connor in the past game.
- 12:04When he was still in the game and I think we ended up getting
- 12:08a little better at that because we ended up.
- 12:11I think as the game wore on we actually move water into nickel
- 12:14and let him kind of run run that and I think that shirt that
- 12:18short up some of the things they were doing in the past game but
- 12:22we just kept getting gashed in the Run game and Connor would
- 12:25have definitely made a difference there.
- 12:27I'd like I said, I don't know if some of that yardage would have
- 12:29ended up being kind of short passing, you know, more that our
- 12:34Oh, stuff, where they were going to some quick outs and things
- 12:37like that, that they were taking advantage of early on in the
- 12:39first half, but, you know, it's really hard to say but it
- 12:44definitely hurt from a run game perspective, no, doubt Italy.
- 12:48And I mean, when you look at the Run game, it was nine point
- 12:51three yards per carry. I mean, your to give up that
- 12:55much and to fight back the way the team fought back to lose by
- 12:5811:00. It's Ana Testament.
- 13:00You know, we're going to probably as we get into this.
- 13:03We're probably gonna To torch the coaching staff a little bit
- 13:07because it's on them. But the guys never quit like
- 13:11this. This is the question because I
- 13:14made a note here as you were talking about it.
- 13:18You mentioned Brooke didn't have his best, Tisdale was good and
- 13:22bad. You mentioned Dax was horrible.
- 13:28What should back Molly Fields role on this team?
- 13:31Be, he needs to be a guy that's coming into spell Tisdale or
- 13:36row. He doesn't need to be a
- 13:39Frontline guy anymore. I think we've seen everything
- 13:42that Dax is going to give us at this point and I think we've
- 13:46kind of seen that for a while, man.
- 13:48I mean he's he's kind of piqued. He picked her early and I think
- 13:53people kind of expected more of a steady upward trajectory.
- 13:57Curry with his game and we just haven't seen that.
- 14:00We've seen more or less the same player we saw in 2018, just with
- 14:06a little more leadership skills that he's been playing out of
- 14:10position and Backer instead of the mic.
- 14:13You think that's had heard his progression that they're asking
- 14:17him to do things to me. He can't do.
- 14:20But when you only have a couple options there, you've got to do
- 14:23it. I think if we would have been
- 14:25smart, we would have went ahead and said, once Tisdale came on
- 14:29and played the way he did, the back half, say Dax you're inside
- 14:33your Mike, you're going to backup Rook.
- 14:35You're going to come in and we'll maybe put you out there on
- 14:39the outside in certain situations or for playing a
- 14:42team. That's very, very much, a kind
- 14:46of between the tackles traditional, run style, not this
- 14:49RPO and read option because he does, he does pretty good when
- 14:54You kind of get a good read and get down hill and make a play.
- 14:59But when he has to think it becomes problematic, he was out
- 15:05of position a lot in the game today.
- 15:09When he was in position he was missing tackles when he was in
- 15:15position to potentially make a play, he was getting blocked by
- 15:17even dad's Newsom. Like come on man.
- 15:24He pounds Dex is six foot three and a half 235 pounds.
- 15:29He should not be getting even, great technique not be getting
- 15:33blocked. If you tell me that, you know,
- 15:36he he stopped the momentum. Yeah, that that means that
- 15:40Newsom is working on his, you know, blocking skills, you're
- 15:43telling me. He's just wiping them out.
- 15:45And tells me somebody's essentially, not listening and
- 15:48understanding leverage and what he needs to do to get to the
- 15:51right point. Yeah, but it was just, it was
- 15:55ugly across the board. I think, I mean, obviously we're
- 16:00going to talk about coaching a little bit here and I mean, it's
- 16:08so difficult to determine how much of this is coaching and
- 16:12calling, and how much is Just Really bad matchups against what
- 16:17they were doing on offense, man. And I mean, I think it's a
- 16:20little bit of both. I think there were some issues
- 16:23with preparation for this team. I think we had some execution
- 16:28flaws. I think we were mismatched from
- 16:32a athleticism perspective, especially with the linebackers
- 16:36against what they were doing in the inside, Run game.
- 16:39Well, but I think also a few calls, put our guys in some bad
- 16:43spots. and, You know, we got been a couple times with some
- 16:49Depot's where we had guys on an island.
- 16:53Yeah, let's get the beat balls in the passing because clearly
- 16:57the running game, they let us up or you know 390 + yd.
- 17:01That's why I said triple, they're not like triple, but two
- 17:04and a half times what they normally do.
- 17:08You know how today? I mean he was efficient, he it's
- 17:12what you want to do. If you're running like that, you
- 17:15want to have the foul line of 18. 23, 257 three touchdowns.
- 17:20His two big weapons had great days.
- 17:23Diana, me Brown 3486 with two touches desk, killed us
- 17:28essentially, 74 69, and a touchdown still.
- 17:31Don't know why we offered that didn't offer.
- 17:33That kid had his brother. Obviously, Myron, play here in
- 17:36the 90s and then Williams continued to kill on the ground
- 17:42game, with 55 yards in the bath, Their offensive line played
- 17:48good, really good in the Run game solid in the past Pro game.
- 17:54The only allowed one back, but Brian me and you talked about it
- 17:58and I kind of early in the game, they didn't have to drop five to
- 18:01seven. It was quick.
- 18:02It was threes, it was getting rid of the ball quick.
- 18:05I mean, we don't have to don't have to drop back the offensive
- 18:10line, as you kind of said to me, is your responsibilities goes by
- 18:14half? Yeah.
- 18:16And the big thing I saw was that, you know, because of the
- 18:20success they were having On The Run game, they were able to just
- 18:25you know, fake The Zone read and then just stand in the pocket
- 18:28right there. You know, four yards deep in the
- 18:32in the backfield and wait for some of those guys to get about
- 18:3620, 25 yards downfield and then he was chucking it.
- 18:39And you know, couple times they they set up the the formation
- 18:43where we were in a bad car. All we had.
- 18:48The one that went deep to to Brown in the first quarter, they
- 18:53had to to the top of the screen and brown on the bottom.
- 18:58And we were in in quarters with with Chapman, having half the
- 19:03field, they're against against Brown.
- 19:06And you know what? Essentially became a quasi
- 19:10one-on-one matchup there because of everything that was going on
- 19:15to the other side of the field. That Browns, the only person On
- 19:17that side of the formation. And you know what?
- 19:20I didn't like about Chapman's technique, there is that he gave
- 19:23up ground very quick to wear brown, got to dictate terms of
- 19:30that route and as soon as soon as you do that, you know, Brown
- 19:34all he had to do is give them a little shoulder fake.
- 19:36And a little, bit of reaction was enough to get him about four
- 19:39or five yards or space where he got open deep and, you know,
- 19:44great ball by house is right on the money.
- 19:46And, you know, Chapman tried to recover their but unfortunately,
- 19:50that ended up with the big TouchDown for than the gave them
- 19:53Twenty One, nothing lead. Yeah.
- 19:56And we talked about the downfield numbers in the preview
- 19:59show that will Sam house. First are yard pass over 20
- 20:03yards, all year. All year so Ron make sure I
- 20:10heard you right on this. Imani Chapman.
- 20:14That was a zone. That wasn't a man, because to
- 20:17me, it looked like he was in, man, because of the way he bit
- 20:20down, when he made that much shoulder turn, like you was
- 20:23gonna go on an out route, and then cut back up on him.
- 20:26So if you look back at it, it's quarters coverage.
- 20:29So you had Walker was playing on the the far hash you had Matheny
- 20:36playing on the numbers, far numbers, he took Newsom up the
- 20:39sideline on the flight. So it was essentially twin fly
- 20:43routes and then they sent the tight end I believe was up the
- 20:48seam or was it Was it. What's his name?
- 20:53There's one of the other guys to the high side, there went up the
- 20:59seam. So you had two guys running up
- 21:03on the outside the other hash. And then you had essentially
- 21:07became a Defector 101 even though Armani Chapman was
- 21:09supposed to be in essentially, half filled in that quarters
- 21:13coverage. He's playing the back half of
- 21:15the, the left side of the formation and I ask you a
- 21:18question. Yep.
- 21:20If Mommy continues to back pedal, does that become a
- 21:24touchdown? Because the way you're saying is
- 21:27he saw him make that move, and he essentially just bit down
- 21:32versus saying no, you're in quarters, almost hits.
- 21:36He gave up his cushion, too fast with him having that deep deep a
- 21:41half responsibility. Okay, that, there we go.
- 21:45There we go. So he's like a cushion here.
- 21:49It became like A man responsibility that point he
- 21:52did, he did he wasn't driving on the ball, he was running with
- 21:57brown served at that point. Brown was dictating the terms of
- 21:59what was going on there. Instead of Chabot, if he kept
- 22:03his cushion, he could have kind of read and react.
- 22:07So essentially, because of what brown did, he flipped it from a
- 22:11Zone to a man coverage? Yeah, because he because of how
- 22:14much he got rid of the cushion right at the beginning of the
- 22:16rout. Okay.
- 22:17Okay. I feel like the other 12 was
- 22:21also a man beater. I'm not sure but either way it
- 22:27just you know, they hit two big ones today, they hadn't hit any
- 22:32all year. They hit two big ones for
- 22:34touchdowns today and They also maintain their efficiency in the
- 22:39Red Zone. Run, if you take out the kneel
- 22:43down, they were essentially perfect in the red zone.
- 22:48And you're not going to be the team that is perfect in the red
- 22:53zone and gets several deep ball touchdowns.
- 22:59It's almost like the perfect storm happen for this defense
- 23:02today where we had felt good. The first couple weeks.
- 23:05We didn't feel great. We didn't feel 2005-2006 defense
- 23:11but we felt like they were tackling solid.
- 23:13Not great, but they were getting their game.
- 23:17Tackling they were playing good in coverage with some of those
- 23:20zones they were staying in their Zone.
- 23:23They weren't as you talked about Armani giving up their cushion
- 23:28is like they didn't trust themselves today.
- 23:29It's like they started getting beat defensively and it was just
- 23:33like, The overthinking. The, let me do this, not that.
- 23:38In against the team with the talent of Carolina, gas is
- 23:41talented yami's, talented there to back since a more talent that
- 23:45they have a, don't have a great offensive line, but they have a
- 23:48solid offensive line. That everything that could go
- 23:53wrong. Did go wrong.
- 23:55Yeah and because of this their success in the Run game that
- 23:59offensive line never really got pushed from the pass rush like
- 24:04Were quick getting rid of the ball and when they did take
- 24:08shots, I took shots from play-action.
- 24:10So guys were playing less aggressive going after the
- 24:15quarterback and they and we didn't get them in a lot of
- 24:18third and long situations, where, you know, it was an
- 24:22obvious past situation so that that put us in a spot where we
- 24:25couldn't just pin our ears back and go after how.
- 24:29Yeah, so, really bad debut for ham, I don't think this is
- 24:36indicative of the kind of defensive coordinator.
- 24:38He is especially today. You know, having Divine out,
- 24:43having Chianti out having Brian Murray out.
- 24:46Having Tyree out losing tomorrow early in the game.
- 24:49Essentially, you lose so much depth at essentially, what I
- 24:54will call the safety positions, you know, it just it wasn't good
- 25:00but I'll say something to Kudos on the coaching staff.
- 25:04To get down by 21 then 25. The team never quit.
- 25:12And maybe the switch at halftime help when we went to Hendon.
- 25:17But Ron anything else on the Virginia Tech defense if I
- 25:22before we flipped and look at the offensive side.
- 25:24But we've got some things we gotta look at there because we
- 25:28did score 45 points today, 31 in the second half.
- 25:31Yeah, I mean, I'm good on defense.
- 25:34Are I will say like it, like you said, you know, rough start for
- 25:38J Hamm. I want to see See some
- 25:41improvement on some of the areas we just talked about man,
- 25:43especially with with regard to the linebackers.
- 25:47Hopefully getting those safeties back on the field, Diablo and
- 25:51Jenkins is going to in particular, is going to be a big
- 25:55help in the Run game because we definitely need it.
- 25:59I know I was talking with you a little bit about kind of what
- 26:02we're doing on the defense of wine.
- 26:03Now, and how what, linebackers, and safety responsibilities in
- 26:06the Run game? How much more of that matters
- 26:09now? Yeah, and I made the comparison
- 26:13of the Colts team that won the Super Bowl with Peyton Manning
- 26:18and how that run defense when Bob Sanders was was injured and
- 26:22not playing for pretty much that whole season was absolutely
- 26:27garbage. But he comes back late in the
- 26:30the regular season and then in the playoffs you know it goes
- 26:34from a bottom, three in the league Rush defense to one that
- 26:40only gave up I think one 100 yard rusher in the playoffs and
- 26:44that was only just so, you know, the safety play with with the
- 26:49way we're playing defense. Now in the Run, game is very
- 26:53important. So not having both of those
- 26:55starters in the game is significant again.
- 26:59I don't think we were going to hold them under 30 with them in
- 27:03the game but I think we might be a, you know, a touchdown better
- 27:07and that might have been just enough to give us a shot there
- 27:09at the end. All right, so let's jump over to
- 27:13the offense. Now, first of all, Brian I
- 27:17started marking short side runs and in those first drives we had
- 27:22540 matter. I'm losing my mind again on
- 27:25that. Probably, I hope you are the
- 27:28same way. But the first three series with
- 27:31Braxton early, part of the game, basically, they were doing the
- 27:35most basic plays. That we had ran the first two
- 27:40games. Yes.
- 27:41And dude it look like UNC was absolutely prepared in getting
- 27:47to this pot and flying and make them a swamp and being the
- 27:53offensive lineman and I sit here and I'm like, what the hell are
- 27:58we doing your literally show? Giving them everything that we
- 28:01have shown on tape there? Yeah, it was it was sad to see
- 28:07how early on we went way vanilla.
- 28:10Play calls, we didn't lean on juice in the Run game.
- 28:16We he had one carrying the first quarter and three in the first
- 28:19half like you know, I get that. You know, you want to start
- 28:25getting some positive movement on offense before you start
- 28:29just, you know, feeding the man. But at the same time, you need
- 28:34to lean on your strength. And we've seen the strength of
- 28:37this defense. This offense is running the
- 28:39football with Khalil Herbert and if we you know, I get what
- 28:46you're saying with the vanilla play calls and I think we should
- 28:48have definitely mixed up how we were getting the ball to him,
- 28:51but the fact that we didn't get it to him is a travesty An
- 28:56absolute travesty because, you know, he would end up wanting
- 29:00up, even with that little of carries in the first half, he
- 29:04still had 138 yards. He still had two touchdowns.
- 29:08He still had seven point seven yards.
- 29:10A carry with those those just having three in the first half.
- 29:15So it, again, it just kind of tells you, it's like, you know,
- 29:19it's okay to do things you do, but you guys figure out
- 29:23different ways to kind of get him in.
- 29:25All be intelligent about that in for you know after those three
- 29:31series they bring him in for a series he goes 3 and out.
- 29:35I don't think that shock to anybody.
- 29:36They again, very vanilla, very blase, nothing special, but
- 29:41finally, we're down 21-nothing, we finally start mixing up the
- 29:46play calls and lo and behold. Two touchdowns in three
- 29:51possessions. We cut it to a one score game,
- 29:56anything specifically on those drives, other than mixing it up
- 29:59a little bit, you know, mixed it up.
- 30:02And honestly on the first touchdown drive, just a hell of
- 30:07an individual effort by Trey Turner kind of taking that
- 30:12little r out there and working inside and then coming back
- 30:16outside and getting up the sideline for a really big gain I
- 30:19mean it was it was one of those. Give me your ankles type
- 30:23situations with the safety there.
- 30:26Yeah, he gave him the little okey-doke and then went outside
- 30:28and all of a sudden he was up the sideline.
- 30:30I was like, what? 50 yard game on that one.
- 30:33Play I want to say, maybe 55. Look, here on the first one real
- 30:40live here. I think we touched on this
- 30:42earlier, but I missed did 3636. Okay, inflated.
- 30:49The play. It felt like a 55 Yard game to
- 30:53us because of how porous everything had been.
- 30:55And to that point so we went from we went from just
- 31:11our side of Midfield Red Zone and a few plays later, you know,
- 31:17we run we run and then we'd run the little jet swimming to James
- 31:22Mitchell from the like one or two yard line.
- 31:26The most Unstoppable playing Collegiate football, I don't
- 31:28know how but it is go up 21-7, and then 445 running those jet
- 31:37sweeps to him at the goal line, man.
- 31:39It is one of the more impressive things of all times and then
- 31:43defense steps up gets a three and out.
- 31:45But we then we have a three and out but defense holds again and
- 31:49gets a three and out and then another big play drive and this
- 31:54one brine I know. No was again a couple Cleo
- 31:59Herbert with a big run Turner with the catch and then Herbert
- 32:03punches it in and your Sydney. And it's like wow after that
- 32:07first quarter. Holy shit.
- 32:10We're down 2114. Yeah, that Herbert touchdown was
- 32:14impressive because he got outside and then he waited for
- 32:20the safety to come up, all your Venture said.
- 32:24All right, I'm going outside got to the Ed's got up the sideline
- 32:27scampered In The End Zone, his vision and patience on that run.
- 32:31I've got jotted that down on that run.
- 32:33It's like, you don't see guys do that.
- 32:36He literally set it up. Waited found it when also props
- 32:40to James Mitchell for getting a big ass pancake at the end of
- 32:43that to your, you texted me and my buddy, Mike texting me, like
- 32:49give James Mitchell. All the credit in the world for
- 32:51that touchdown run. He crushed that guy.
- 32:54Absolutely. All right.
- 32:56Well defense again all day it happened.
- 32:59They have a couple good series and then they give up another
- 33:02touchdown. They go back upstairs scores but
- 33:05you know, hey, we proved we can go squirrel these guys now.
- 33:10Yep. Yep. 2014.
- 33:12It's getting ground near the end of the half and we're driving
- 33:17you know got a good drive going. We get to the UNC 43.
- 33:22Brian its third and fourth at the UNC 43.
- 33:27You're clearly down, two touchdowns you are out of Brian
- 33:30Johnson's Ranger so we think about he did later was pretty
- 33:34impressive. What what do you expect?
- 33:37If you're the offensive play? Colin Braun what, what is your
- 33:40call? Their third and four 43-yard
- 33:44line, your you probably into down territory, what's your play
- 33:47call there? Run.
- 33:50Any specific Grand anything, you would have liked to sing.
- 33:55I would like to seem probably outside Zone to the wide side to
- 34:00Khalil Herbert. You said, well, I had to piss me
- 34:03off. No, Brian Brad.
- 34:08Cornelison looks at the Excel spreadsheet and runs.
- 34:11A booking short side screen to Tavian Robinson and we get one
- 34:18yard. You know what I would have been
- 34:23okay? If it was like a tunnel screen
- 34:25because at least he's moving towards the quarterback and can
- 34:28kind of roll up feed where you feel like his momentum and it
- 34:32was just like a quick spot screen outside where he has no
- 34:35forward momentum. When he catches the ball, like
- 34:39he can't even fall forward for like two or three yards.
- 34:43It's just like once again, I'll ask you.
- 34:53It's 4th and 38 to 42 of the UNC What what's your play call here?
- 35:00Is is white and still on the field.
- 35:03And fourth and three but you you're driving.
- 35:07You're showing you can score on this team.
- 35:10I mean I like the play call to go for it.
- 35:12I don't like the call that was called throwing a quick slant
- 35:16from the slot position into double coverage.
- 35:20I don't like that. What I would have liked to seen
- 35:22is that if you're going to throw the ball in that situation, you
- 35:26either kind of do one of those fake one way and kind of
- 35:30throwback to your tight end. We're honestly lean on your
- 35:36strength and just run zone out of rather.
- 35:41Seen you run Zone on Fourth and three than what than the play
- 35:44call. We ended up going with.
- 35:46Yeah. And I think for me and you we
- 35:48hate it because we know the strength of this team is our
- 35:50line. It's like yeah I'll for you and
- 35:54it's all running backs you know you know Bryson and have the
- 35:57best day and essentially you know, Braxton's time to starter
- 36:01is over, but you Feeling that situation run him in some way.
- 36:06Let us use our strengths. Yeah and I don't think Braxton
- 36:10played a bad game. I think he played considering
- 36:15his strengths and weaknesses probably A B+ game for him
- 36:22against that defense, but I don't think we needed a lot more
- 36:26than that to win the game, especially the way they were
- 36:29humming on offense. And that's that's the long and
- 36:34short of it, man. But again, like on that fourth
- 36:36alcohol. Like, why not do something where
- 36:38your lease may be moving the pocket so you know, if the route
- 36:43isn't there Braxton has a chance to take off and maybe get it
- 36:46with his legs but you know, you kind of you.
- 36:49You're throwing the slant and I mean there's not really a whole
- 36:51lot, he's not moving off that unless for whatever reason the,
- 36:57you know, the Seas part and he can, you know, run right up the
- 37:01gut or something. But you took away the option for
- 37:06him to even use his best ability on that fourth down.
- 37:10Absolutely now, so again Carolina gets the ball.
- 37:15It's and they hit their second big play.
- 37:17We're down, 3514 going into half.
- 37:20I am second half, I don't think to anyone surprised him and
- 37:24comes out as the starter. And this is the honest truth.
- 37:30Hidden hooker is our qb1 me, no doubt.
- 37:34If you show as that, I think it showed in that first half that
- 37:39you were missing the elements of the passing game that if they
- 37:42were there, maybe were maybe 3521, 3524, go.
- 37:49One and a half time. We can we can get on that.
- 37:52Yep these are one now as we come out in the second half the early
- 37:56play calls, just very vanilla. Then we got a first down and
- 38:01then it where it took three plays for the offense, to start
- 38:07mixing up the calls of rack 3-Series, excuse me, it took a
- 38:11couple plays within them and they start mixing it up and then
- 38:15an absolute perfect. I'll Credit in the world to
- 38:18cornelison play called to Trey Turner for a touchdown that was
- 38:23unfortunately. Nullified by has an illegal
- 38:26motion, any wasn't set, which just sucks because it was
- 38:30Perfect. Play right into his own on the
- 38:33inside. Almost using middle of the field
- 38:34is the same in and puts it on the money.
- 38:36Triton. Stop running touchdown.
- 38:39Fortunately, it comes back now, very fortunate.
- 38:43We have a kicker. Now we can trust and you saw
- 38:47that kick because you were at the brown fortunate.
- 38:51I was stopped and a son to a birthday party for a while, so
- 38:53he was having to pay attention to a seven-year-old at a
- 38:57birthday party. Trying to keep an eye on the
- 38:59game. Text me some stuff.
- 39:01You saw that play about what? 20 minutes to go right?
- 39:06Before we started recording Jesus.
- 39:08What A kick. Yeah, they were holding it on
- 39:12the UNC logo. Well, yeah, 55 yarder.
- 39:18And it gets us to within 18, but just looking at that that kind
- 39:25of play and then kind of everything that would happen
- 39:28from here on out hidden had some good runs and Brian having him
- 39:35in there. The offense is so much more
- 39:37dynamic. Yep.
- 39:41And it is and let's just talk about it.
- 39:42I mean you showed up on the damn scoreboard and so did 31 points,
- 39:4831 31 points in the second half. So it's this is not just, you
- 39:52know, I test like it's fucking, you know we've got the data
- 39:56there too. May we got, we got 31 points,
- 40:03double the yardage in the second half.
- 40:07Big runs by Herbert opened up. We finally started giving the
- 40:11ball to Herbert. What was this?
- 40:13Final final total number number again, 138:2 touchdown. 7.7 a
- 40:21carry, how many carries At 7.7 like 18.
- 40:26Okay 15 minutes second half so 15 in the second half.
- 40:30Yeah, which out of out expected at least 12 per half.
- 40:36So the fact that, you know, I thought he was going to be
- 40:39between 20 and 25 carries for the game.
- 40:42Yeah, and we were under that and we were under that because we
- 40:47underutilized him in the first half.
- 40:49Yep. I think I just thought I don't
- 40:51get how we didn't lean on our strengths.
- 40:54In the first half, especially when again, we were having some
- 40:57limitations in the passing game, it's 100% man.
- 41:01And I talked about the hooker on, he runs the set and the
- 41:04first touchdown in the second. Half in, after hitting a
- 41:06freaking 50-plus, you order to Big Stone Gap and right there
- 41:11because the next series was the big juice run in me and you
- 41:16talked about it and we've mentioned it before UNC when he
- 41:20got in there. They couldn't just In.
- 41:24Go to a spot they actually had to thank and dissect mortal van
- 41:30dissect, the more we scored and you know Brian as we get into
- 41:35deeper into the third quarter you know the defense you know
- 41:41continues to hold pretty good because now they're getting some
- 41:44time off the field. They hold to a three and out you
- 41:47know and you know, UNC gets the lead back to 12 and then we
- 41:52finally Get there. Get it within four on explain
- 42:01that route where Tavian Robinson called us touchdown, because I
- 42:04loved it. They showed it a great angle but
- 42:08tell me what those guys are thinking.
- 42:10Yep. And then there's the runner you
- 42:11have juice and juice just broke a big one.
- 42:14They've hit Big Stone Gap, tell me what that defense is thinking
- 42:18on that touchdown play to take me on.
- 42:20So tree ran a wheel and and trade took two guys up the
- 42:27sideline with him on the wheel and what that left was Tavian
- 42:32essentially running a route kind of in right up the hash and they
- 42:37hit him there and all he had to do was make a move on the
- 42:39safety. The safety was the only person
- 42:41there safety still had an eye on what Trey Turner was doing.
- 42:46He put a little okey-doke on him and then ran right right between
- 42:49the Cash, is there for the touchdown?
- 42:52I mean, it was a really good play call, man.
- 42:54It was a really good play call. And the way they set it up, they
- 42:57definitely bad both of their eyes on the wheel because we've
- 43:00thrown the wheel a couple times at this point.
- 43:03And then, you know, kind of work that route underneath and you
- 43:07know, Tavian Robinson had a lot of room to work and when he's
- 43:09got room to work he can make guys miss and just get up.
- 43:12Feel for the touchdown. Yes, you can.
- 43:16But, you know, obviously the defensive struggle continued,
- 43:20after we cut it to five the defense pretty quickly, gave it
- 43:24back, we go back up to 12. Then we have The just the one
- 43:30that irritated the crap out of a lot of folks, you included me
- 43:35included, we get the ball juice. Herbert 11 yards out, here we go
- 43:40again. We're going to cut it right back
- 43:41down. After an 11-yard gain.
- 43:45We choose to pass the ball on three consecutive plays and I'm
- 43:53trying to figure that out. Because it makes no sense.
- 43:57And then takes a sack on third down and 10.
- 44:00We have to punt. Let's just not run at all.
- 44:05He just got 11 yards. That's just completely ignore
- 44:11The motor a little team, the thing to keep the team going,
- 44:15and this is where the Excel spreadsheet needs to be tossed
- 44:19out, and potentially the person up in the booth colonies plays,
- 44:24this is where you get to that point.
- 44:25I'm holding the neck like this brown, like maybe he needs to go
- 44:28because it's so inconsistent. And at that point right there,
- 44:35you know, you can store them. Yep.
- 44:56To a lot of things and he does but he is so inconsistent and
- 45:05Sometimes either under thinks or overthinks the situation.
- 45:10Not just when it happens it's definitely more of like when
- 45:14it's the flow of the game, like that was a key drive like we
- 45:18needed that to get points. It wasn't like, you know, I mean
- 45:22sometimes you know there's drives where okay, well, you
- 45:25don't feel bad about a three and out are you don't feel bad about
- 45:28you know, trying to do something different and it didn't work and
- 45:31he had a punt. Sometimes, there's those
- 45:33scenarios and you're like, okay well he was trying something
- 45:37different, it didn't work but that's something You do when
- 45:40you're not in these crunch-time moments, it's not something you
- 45:44don't get cute. When things are humming for you
- 45:48and you all of a sudden, you try to do something different just
- 45:50to shake things up. Like the running game is going.
- 45:54The misdirection game is going both in the passing game in the
- 45:56running game. You know, go back to the well
- 46:00until they can stop it. Yep.
- 46:04But they don't that happens. We punt UNC get this again to go
- 46:10up 56-37. We're down 19 and you know it's
- 46:16about nine minutes left in the game and all hopes.
- 46:20Not lost because you take a look at how we scored the third
- 46:23quarter, one in a minute and 18, s 1.
- 46:26Then under a minute. If I cool, this is fine, let's
- 46:30go. We've got to go score.
- 46:33You know, let's mention real quick, the brawn Johnson onside
- 46:37kick. That was a thing of beauty, that
- 46:39swung the momentum in our favor. And we not only one, the one up,
- 46:44the middle was pretty but the one to the outside that they got
- 46:47later on, it was all so beautiful, so give him his due
- 46:51diligence, forgiveness credit. But then so we get the ball,
- 46:54nine minutes or so, left. And Brian.
- 46:58I don't know if you didn't get to see this.
- 46:59I don't think live the tempo of that touchdown Drive.
- 47:03I've felt so shitty. Yep.
- 47:07It took three minutes and 23 seconds and I'm sitting here.
- 47:09It's like what are we doing? We are down 19 points.
- 47:13We know we can score fast on them.
- 47:15We need to get our asses and go. When once again, you just meant
- 47:20to more flaws about bread cornelison.
- 47:23There's another one right there. It's like, no, this is when you
- 47:26need to go Temple, this is when you need to take shots.
- 47:30Basically that drive it, you know, it says essentially each.
- 47:33Switch the drives. Yeah, you did this on the
- 47:37previous drive and then, you know, hurried up and was
- 47:40chucking it on this drive you might say, okay, well, at least
- 47:42there's a rhyme and reason to it but you know, he got too cute
- 47:49and moving too fast and trying to do too much on a drive where
- 47:53he just needed to simplify things and keep rolling with
- 47:57what's working. And then once, you know, then
- 48:00when he's in a situation where we need points, we have to get
- 48:03points and how to get points fast.
- 48:04He's like, all right, we're going to We're going to
- 48:07methodically drive. This bad boy down the field and
- 48:09get a, get a touchdown, and a two point conversion, no big
- 48:12deal. Yeah, and here's the issue with
- 48:15that drive, and it's to your point.
- 48:17Exactly. Eight.
- 48:19Play 77 yards. Three minutes, 23 seconds.
- 48:22We had five runs on that one. Yes, we have the explosive,
- 48:29guys, don't get me wrong. But when you're down 19 with
- 48:32nine minutes left, you need to be pushing the ball and again,
- 48:36It's just terrible situational awareness.
- 48:40Again this is where we can add the onside kick, we don't get it
- 48:44but that last Drive even you said it to me right before the
- 48:47game fight. For we started there were
- 48:50several opportunities for the defense to stop them.
- 48:52We didn't and at the end of the day, not enough stops and not
- 49:00going to quarterback one quick enough.
- 49:03Lost the game, 5645. If we should have went to
- 49:07quarterback one. Snap one.
- 49:10Oh yes, that's what me and you was that snap one should have
- 49:14been qv1 hidden hooker. Should have started the game.
- 49:18I'm going to put that on Coach Fuente and coach cornelison for
- 49:23not getting the right guy to start the game.
- 49:26I mean, at some point you got to say regardless of preparation,
- 49:31regardless of what the practice is look like.
- 49:34He's had enough time to react. Himself, you know, he is your
- 49:38best option at the position. You don't play it.
- 49:42Safe against a ranked opponent in your conference that you're
- 49:47likely going to have to beat in order to play for a conference
- 49:50Championship. Yeah.
- 49:52Now we that's not to say that our hopes of a conference
- 49:55Championship were out the door because, you know, unc's play to
- 50:00tie games against lesser ACC competition to this point and
- 50:03almost got nicked against Boston College.
- 50:06So that's not to say they can't drop two games and we're right
- 50:09back in the, in the driver's seat.
- 50:11But right now, we didn't put our best effort out there to start
- 50:16the game and it came down to buy this because if hendon's out
- 50:21there, this could have ended up in a shootout versus having to
- 50:23play catch-up the whole damn game.
- 50:26That's where the bigger issue is its we had it like catch up if
- 50:29he's out there you feel from Jump Street, they score opening
- 50:32weeks for opening and that set the tone for them also to Where
- 50:37I don't think they get as comfortable running the ball.
- 50:40I think they got to become to run of the ball because you're
- 50:42up 21 nothing after the first quarter.
- 50:46Shit. I mean, tell me in football
- 50:49coaching, this world that we're up.
- 50:51We're going to run a little more.
- 50:52If we continue to stay up, we're going to keep running.
- 50:56We kill clock. We're getting cashiers.
- 51:00What do you work with you and see dead against us?
- 51:02Is that they found what was working and they stuck with it.
- 51:07That's not talk about that because there were certain
- 51:09things that were working for us that we just decided to go away
- 51:12from run and you know as we close in on 1 p.m. here Eastern
- 51:19Standard Time, watching highlight shows we were on the
- 51:26BC. Right into PCL pit today in
- 51:33overtime. And, you know, You told me it's
- 51:426:00 because I told you it's six o'clock and by that time, so
- 51:45it'll be three hours right? At a little over three hours
- 51:48past the game. I texted you and said I'm not as
- 51:51mad with this loss. He texted me back.
- 51:54You're like I'm still bleeping man with his loss.
- 51:58Where are you a few hours later? And looking at more tape, are
- 52:02you still as angry or is it? Are you coming down to where?
- 52:07It's like, I'm not as mad. But I'm very mad that we did not
- 52:15have any hooker out there to start the game, especially the
- 52:17way he played, when he was on the field, I'm still mad that
- 52:24our linebackers didn't play better.
- 52:27Because at some point, I mean, The, the bad reads I will live
- 52:34with that because people are going to get bad reads
- 52:37especially against a team that does use some misdirection in
- 52:40the things with the RPO that they do.
- 52:42I get that. But they played timid and they
- 52:45didn't tackle well and that's things that they can control.
- 52:49So that's got to be better. That's got to be better going
- 52:53forward. And I mean, I'm hoping getting
- 52:56Didi and Jenkins back is going to clean up a little bit of that
- 52:58run game stuff, so we'll see how that goes.
- 53:01Thankfully, we got a team coming in that does not run the ball
- 53:04very well. So I think we're going to have
- 53:07some more success in that area this week.
- 53:11But with the way they sling, the ball, a bunch of times.
- 53:15I would like to have the safeties back as well for that.
- 53:20Well, from everything. We're Gathering divine's back.
- 53:23Regardless, the vine actually, Divine should probably be back
- 53:27for a whole week of practice, which is good.
- 53:29Yeah, if we cuz Me and you did some counting earlier.
- 53:34We said he could be back if he was one of these tests, but he
- 53:38won't. He was in.
- 53:39He was in the Friday set which meant that he wasn't going to
- 53:42get even if it was - he wasn't getting results back until after
- 53:46the team had already traveled. Yeah.
- 53:48So he's in the Friday set you hope he's back because if he's
- 53:51back because it has been Friday, Saturday Sunday, Monday,
- 53:54Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday Sunday, his
- 53:57tenth day will be tomorrow which is not a practice daily.
- 54:01Luckily it's one of those things, he can be on a zoom
- 54:03meeting with the guys and he's back on the field.
- 54:05Monday, practicing kyanka. I want to say Kion toe was in
- 54:13the early set of testings. I want to say it.
- 54:17Sounded like she was the Monday, he was in.
- 54:20So he has a chance of being cleared either Wednesday or
- 54:24Friday, right? So we think he's in the Monday
- 54:28if it that he's Wednesday. No.
- 54:30He would be Wednesday or Thursday if you middle, he's the
- 54:36borderline. Yep, we're borderline, appease
- 54:39their next Week. Now, luckily for us it is a home
- 54:43game, right? Yep.
- 54:45So no travel so he's not cleared by the wind State St.
- 54:49To be clear about a Friday test. We should at least be available
- 54:52even if he's not the guy that you're rolling out there to
- 54:54start the game because of preparation.
- 54:57So he's at least available. My beer is empty.
- 55:02I think I'm not going to have another one.
- 55:06It's one of your ear at the moment of truth for you.
- 55:09Got to decide. Do I drink some more or do I
- 55:11just go to sleep? Yeah, I need to go to sleep.
- 55:14The little one was up at like six twenty this morning on a
- 55:16Saturday. So I need ya freakin kid sleeps
- 55:22till like 6:45 on the weekdays and Saturday morning, he wants
- 55:26to wake up at 6:00 and it's, you know, the unthinking boniest,
- 55:30wake up exactly. Um, have the case of turnout Do
- 55:37it was baller with the fundido had some some chorizo Jalapeno
- 55:44in their little Rotel, got the the Velveeta Blanco what else I
- 55:52have in there. Some pepper, jack, some onion,
- 55:56and did you have get your wife and child have any?
- 56:00Oh, yeah. I mean honestly there's about
- 56:05half a pan left sitting in the I put it in a container for
- 56:10tomorrow. So I've got some I've got some
- 56:12Game Day food for tomorrow, too. So whatever I ended up doing
- 56:16some, you know, we had talked about brisket, I actually ended
- 56:19up grabbing a boneless pork button.
- 56:23Did some carnitas so I had some carnitas tacos with the case.
- 56:26Oh dude, you turn baller tonight, man.
- 56:31Very nice. Like I said, I eat my feelings.
- 56:35You ain't your friend. I said here, I ate a bagel for
- 56:38breakfast and didn't eat anything until I had gorditas
- 56:42with me, Jalisco and some shrimp, some chicken, and some
- 56:46steak on that bad boy, I gobbled down.
- 56:50My wife looked at me as I was eating the second one.
- 56:52She's like, you can eat all of it.
- 56:53I'm like, yeah, yeah, I've committed a quick committed.
- 56:57Quit exactly scrolling through Here at one am anything.
- 57:03We've missed. Nothing fun, man.
- 57:06Nothing fun, you know, the only upside knock on wood is
- 57:13essentially. Luke tenuta was out today, but I
- 57:16don't, I think that was probably something else.
- 57:19Just when you see only one position, group guy, go down,
- 57:22hopefully find out more this week.
- 57:24Have it reported few guys on the preview show but since there is
