What is the Gospel?

The word “gospel” means “good news,” so the question really is: what is the good news? In Matthew 4:17, Matthew writes that Jesus began to preach saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” But just a chapter later in Matthew 5:17, Jesus teaches in his Sermon on the Mount: “do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”This is Jesus’ point: everything in the Old Testament points to him.
