- 0:00Let me start with a question that might make you a little
- 0:02uncomfortable. Have you ever felt more pressure
- 0:06to look faithful than to actually be faithful?
- 0:09Not because you're fake or malicious or trying to deceive
- 0:13anyone, but because somewhere along the way, faith quietly
- 0:16became something you felt expected to perform.
- 0:20Something you had to keep polished.
- 0:22Something that had to sound right, look right, and fit
- 0:25neatly inside of other people's definitions.
- 0:29And if you're honest, there may be moments when your public
- 0:32faith sounds stronger than your private one.
- 0:35Moment when words become easy but connection feels thin.
- 0:39Moments when you wonder if anyone would still recognize
- 0:42your faith if you stopped using the right language or showing up
- 0:46in the right ways. Today I want to talk about what
- 0:49happens when faith gets buried underneath expectations, and
- 0:53what it looks like to move beyond the labels and into
- 0:55something real again. Welcome to Unmasked.
- 1:04I'm Wesley Farnsworth, your host, and this is a podcast
- 1:07about removing the filters, dropping the masks, and having
- 1:10honest conversations about faith, life, and transformation.
- 1:15Today's episode is called Beyond the Labels, embracing authentic
- 1:18faith in a world of expectations.
- 1:21This is not an episode about abandoning faith.
- 1:24It's not about rejecting church theology or spiritual
- 1:27disciplines. It is an episode, though, about
- 1:30what happens when faith stops being lived and starts being
- 1:34curated, and how we can reclaim something deeper on the other
- 1:38side. So let's talk about why we fake
- 1:45faith. We don't usually wake up one day
- 1:48and decide to perform our faith. It happens gradually over time,
- 1:53almost quietly at first. It's subtle.
- 1:56You learn the language, you observe what gets affirmed, and
- 2:00you notice which behaviors are celebrated and which questions
- 2:04are quietly discouraged. And over time, you start
- 2:06adjusting, not necessarily to deceive, but to belong.
- 2:10Social media has only amplified this.
- 2:12We live in a world today where spiritual moments are shareable,
- 2:16quotable, and optimized for engagement.
- 2:19A verse posted at the right time.
- 2:21A worship lyric in the caption. A polished reflection that
- 2:24sounds vulnerable without actually being risky.
- 2:27And listen, none of these things are wrong on their own.
- 2:30The problem is when they become substitutes for real connection
- 2:34instead of expressions of it. It's possible possible to attend
- 2:38services consistently while remaining spiritually
- 2:42disconnected. It's possible to quote scripture
- 2:44accurately while never letting it confront you personally.
- 2:47It's possible to appear deeply rooted while you're still
- 2:50quietly running on empty. Jesus actually addresses this
- 2:54directly in Matthew 15/8, he says, and that's in the NIV
- 2:59version of the Bible. It's a it, but it's a warning,
- 3:03not an insult. See, performance grows when
- 3:05faith becomes about external validation and set of internal
- 3:08transformation. When belief becomes something we
- 3:12present instead of something that we practice, when we feel
- 3:15pressure to represent certainty even when we're wrestling.
- 3:19And here's the dangerous part. Over time, the gap between
- 3:22belief and practice widens. What starts as a child
- 3:26inconsistency turns into quiet exhaustion because maintaining
- 3:31an image requires energy that faith doesn't.
- 3:34So let me ask you something. When was the last time you felt
- 3:37light instead of heavy? One of the biggest lies that we
- 3:42absorb, often without realizing it, is that an offense is that
- 3:46authentic faith should feel consistently strong, confident
- 3:51and clear. But Scripture tells us something
- 3:53very different. David wrote in Psalms from
- 3:56places of despair and confusion. Elijah, after a powerful
- 3:59victory, collapsed under exhaustion and asked God to take
- 4:03his life. Even John the Baptist, who
- 4:05recognized Jesus as the Messiah, later sent messengers asking if
- 4:09Jesus was really the one. So faith has always been messy.
- 4:13We just stopped talking about that part of it.
- 4:15There were seasons when prayer feels dry, seasons when
- 4:18Scripture doesn't hit the way it used to, seasons when obedience
- 4:22felt mechanical and joy felt distant.
- 4:25Those moments don't disqualify your faith, though.
- 4:28They reveal that it's alive. The problem is that many of us
- 4:32have learned to hide behind these seasons.
- 4:35We internalize the idea that doubt equals danger and that
- 4:40struggle equals weakness and silence equals failure.
- 4:44But listen closely. Doubt is not the opposite of
- 4:47faith, AB. Doubt means you still care
- 4:50enough to wrestle, You still care enough to ask.
- 4:53You still care enough to seek something truer than surface
- 4:56level answers. In Psalms 13, David asks, how
- 5:00long, Lord, will you forget me forever?
- 5:02If you've ever felt spiritually dry, disconnected, or uncertain,
- 5:07know that you are not broken. You're human and you're in in
- 5:10good company. Somewhere along the way, we
- 5:12absorbed a timeline for faith that doesn't actually exist.
- 5:17We we've believed this myth that there's a perfect journey out
- 5:22there. We imagined progress as a
- 5:24straight line that starts with conversion and then goes to
- 5:27growth. The maturity stability.
- 5:29Questions were answered, doubts were resolved, confidence
- 5:32secured. But faith looks more like a
- 5:34spiritual spiral than a staircase.
- 5:37You revisit the same questions at deeper levels.
- 5:40As you grow, you encounter familiar struggles with new
- 5:43awareness. You grow not by avoiding
- 5:46tension, but by engaging it honestly.
- 5:48Paul writes in Philippians 1/6. He who began a good work in you
- 5:52will carry it on to completion. That implies process, ongoing
- 5:56formation, incomplete chapters. Faith is not something that you
- 6:00graduate from struggling with. It's something that you learn to
- 6:04carry with integrity. The danger of a Perfect journey
- 6:07myth is that it teaches us to edit our stories and instead of
- 6:10live them, we share victories behind the process.
- 6:14We highlight outcomes, but silence the waiting.
- 6:16And when everyone around us sounds confident, we assume our
- 6:21uncertainty is abnormal. We perform, we nod, we agree, we
- 6:25stay quiet. But authenticity dies in
- 6:28silence. See, there's a lot of power and
- 6:30vulnerability and not staying silent.
- 6:33There's something profoundly disarming about honest faith
- 6:36when someone admits that they're struggling.
- 6:38Not dramatically, not theatrically, but truthfully.
- 6:42It creates space, it invites connection, and it reminds
- 6:46others that they don't have to pretend either.
- 6:49James 516 says. Therefore confess your sins to
- 6:52each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.
- 6:55Notice that it doesn't say confess your image or confess
- 6:58your success. It just says confess.
- 7:00Healing doesn't happen in performance, it happens in
- 7:03honesty. Vulnerability doesn't mean
- 7:06oversharing or dumping everything on everyone.
- 7:09It means refusing to hide behind language that keeps people at a
- 7:13safe distance. It means allowing yourself to be
- 7:16known appropriately, wisely, and courageously.
- 7:20There's a concept often called radical honesty, and within
- 7:23faith communities, it can be transformative.
- 7:26When people stop pretending that they're fine and they start
- 7:28telling the truth about where they are, something shifts.
- 7:32Walls begin to come down and shame begins to lose its grip.
- 7:36Faith becomes relational again. And here's something important.
- 7:40Vulnerability deepens your connection with God, too,
- 7:43because you stop approaching him as who you think you should be,
- 7:48and you start approaching Him as who you actually are.
- 7:51In that moment, God does not require Polish.
- 7:54He simply responds to honesty. And when you have that honesty,
- 7:59you begin to shed the burden of expectation.
- 8:02One of the most liberating moments in a person's faith
- 8:05journey is realizing that God never asked them to carry
- 8:08everyone else's expectations. Those expectations often come
- 8:12from good places, tradition, community, culture, but they
- 8:16still come from and become burdens.
- 8:20When faith becomes about meeting standards instead of
- 8:23encountering God, it becomes exhausting.
- 8:25You start measuring yourself consistently.
- 8:28Am I doing enough? Am I consistent enough?
- 8:31Do I sound spiritual enough? Jesus actually addresses this in
- 8:35Matthew 1128. He says come to me, all who are
- 8:39weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
- 8:42That invitation still stands to day.
- 8:44Rest doesn't come from trying harder, it comes from being
- 8:48honest about where you are. Let me ask you another question.
- 8:51What expectations have you been carrying that God never actually
- 8:54gave? You say at some point we have to
- 8:56reclaim our authentic journey. If you're ready to move beyond
- 9:01performative faith, then it starts with awareness.
- 9:04Pay attention to moments when your actions are driven by the
- 9:07optics instead of the conviction.
- 9:09Notice when you say yes out of obligation instead of alignment.
- 9:13Notice when your spiritual language sounds right but it
- 9:16feels hollow. That awareness isn't
- 9:18condemnation, it's clarity. And then you have to ask
- 9:21yourself a harder question. What does genuine faith actually
- 9:25look like for you right now? Not five years ago, not
- 9:28according to somebody else's timeline, but right now.
- 9:32That authentic faith might look quieter than you expected.
- 9:36It might involve fewer words and more listening.
- 9:39It might show up through journaling, time in nature,
- 9:42honest conversations, or intentional solitude.
- 9:46Jesus often withdrew to lonely places to pray, not to perform
- 9:50it and not to be seen, but to reconnect.
- 9:52There is no simple template for authentic faith.
- 9:55There's only the honesty and intention.
- 9:58Build practices that draw you closer instead of impressing
- 10:02others. Choose rhythms that sustain
- 10:05connection rather than drain it, and give yourself permission to
- 10:09let faith evolve without abandoning it.
- 10:13Labels can be really helpful in life, but they were never meant
- 10:17to replace relationship. So we need to move beyond the
- 10:20labels. Denominational labels,
- 10:23theological labels, spiritual labels, they all can provide a
- 10:27structure, but they can't carry the faith for you.
- 10:30Authentic faith transcends categories because it's lived,
- 10:33not just defined. When people bring their full
- 10:36stories, their doubts, their questions, their breakthroughs
- 10:40waiting, it creates A richer, stronger community, one built on
- 10:45humanity instead of shared performance.
- 10:47The Church doesn't need more polished faith, It needs more
- 10:50honest faith. It needs people willing to say
- 10:53this is where I am instead of this is who I should sound like.
- 10:58And that kind of faith doesn't weaken belief.
- 11:00It only strengthens it. As you know, I love to leave
- 11:03each episode with action steps, something that you can meditate
- 11:06on. And so here's your action step
- 11:08for this episode. It's just one, but what it
- 11:11matters. I want you to take 10 minutes
- 11:13and write down 1 area of your faith where you feel pressure to
- 11:17perform instead of permission. To be honest, I don't want you
- 11:21to edit it and don't spiritualize it.
- 11:23Just name it and then ask yourself this question and write
- 11:27the answer. What would authenticity look
- 11:29like here if I stopped worrying about expectations?
- 11:33You don't have to share this publicly, and you don't have to
- 11:37fix it immediately. This is all about you and your
- 11:41inward review of your life. But naming this thing, naming
- 11:45this area of your life that you're still performing in, is
- 11:49how you start moving beyond the labels and back towards a faith
- 11:53that's real, lived, and deeply human.
- 12:01Well, thanks for joining me today on Unmasked.
- 12:03If something in this episode spoke to you, don't let it stop
- 12:06with you. Share it with one person who God
- 12:08put on your heart while you were listening.
- 12:10You never know whose breakthrough might start with
- 12:13just a simple message from you. If you want more encouragement
- 12:15from me, you want to work with me one-on-one, or you're
