Latest / Cardinal Territory: A St. Louis Cardinals Podcast / Can the Cardinals keep up with the NL Central?
Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: It's Thursday, June nineteenth, and as Bernie and I record
- 0:09Speaker 1: this episode, it was supposed to be a serious recap
- 0:12Speaker 1: episode between the Cardinals and the White Sox, but we
- 0:15Speaker 1: should have known after two weeks thought a doubleheader, that
- 0:17Speaker 1: the Cardinals would get another one.
- 0:19Speaker 2: So as we recorded this right now, it's four to
- 0:21Speaker 2: one Saint Louis.
- 0:22Speaker 1: In the top of the fourth, Alec Burlason and Nolan
- 0:25Speaker 1: Arnotto went back to back in the inning. Prior Congratulations
- 0:27Speaker 1: to Nolan home run number three fifty for the Cardinals
- 0:31Speaker 1: third baseman. What a career he has had. Welcome back
- 0:34Speaker 1: to Cardinal territory. Bernie and I finally reunited. It's been
- 0:38Speaker 1: so long, Bernie, how are you. I haven't seen you
- 0:41Speaker 1: in forever. I feel like I'm doing good.
- 0:43Speaker 3: I missed you, you know. I'm used to doing two
- 0:45Speaker 3: of these a week with you, and I thought, well,
- 0:47Speaker 3: maybe I got maybe I was designated for assignment or something.
- 0:50Speaker 3: So I'm.
- 0:53Speaker 2: The show episode. No way.
- 0:57Speaker 3: No, It's good to be back with you. And yeah,
- 0:59Speaker 3: always a lot to talk about. The Cardinals are interesting,
- 1:02Speaker 3: if nothing else, whether they're good or they're bad, or
- 1:05Speaker 3: there's a drama, it's just they're always always interesting, you know,
- 1:09Speaker 3: because of that lineup churn and Ali's got to make
- 1:13Speaker 3: all these decisions, and you you know, you have McGreevy
- 1:17Speaker 3: pitching today, and it's it's kind of like, are they
- 1:20Speaker 3: really gonna send them back to Memphis? I mean, there's
- 1:23Speaker 3: just always something going on.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Well, let's jump right into it, because Shotter, you're in
- 1:27Speaker 1: my mind. As we mentioned, the Cardinals are still playing
- 1:29Speaker 1: right now, their second game of Thursday's doubleheader, but they
- 1:32Speaker 1: did take the series things to comeback win in Game
- 1:34Speaker 1: one five to four. Shout out Wilson Contrera's game tight
- 1:37Speaker 1: home run. Shout out the White Sox defense for you
- 1:40Speaker 1: go ahead on earn run that won that game. But
- 1:44Speaker 1: really I thought that, and we talked about this in
- 1:45Speaker 1: Tuesday's episode. The win on Tuesday was they needed to
- 1:49Speaker 1: do that. They needed to at least win the series
- 1:51Speaker 1: bare minimum.
- 1:53Speaker 2: They can hold on to.
- 1:53Speaker 1: This lead, obviously, they'll take a sweep, would do wonders
- 1:56Speaker 1: to get them back to a good place ahead of
- 1:59Speaker 1: their seven straight games against their Nlcentral opponents. But I
- 2:03Speaker 1: think Michael McGreevy, who's allowed want and run so far,
- 2:07Speaker 1: this is fun. It's like we're watching the game together
- 2:09Speaker 1: and yeah, yeah.
- 2:10Speaker 3: We should have done a live stream just we're able
- 2:13Speaker 3: to talk about the game, not play by play. We
- 2:16Speaker 3: could have done like a game breakdown, you know, kind
- 2:18Speaker 3: of play by play by not play by play, but
- 2:20Speaker 3: for when something happens.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Well, okay, finally that away for my next off series.
- 2:27Speaker 1: I would love to do that with the Foul Territory.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Guys.
- 2:29Speaker 2: What a fun idea.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Okay, So back to McGreevy before I get super sidetracked.
- 2:35Speaker 1: I checked out from the team for maybe twelve hours,
- 2:37Speaker 1: and as a B writer that you are apparently not
- 2:39Speaker 1: allowed to do that. Because imagine my surprise as I
- 2:41Speaker 1: have MLB Network on my TV this morning, getting ready
- 2:43Speaker 1: to go hang out with my.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Mom and St.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Charles, and on the little ticker it says McGreevy, as
- 2:49Speaker 1: they're probable for today, and I've said, oh, all right.
- 2:53Speaker 1: So after a couple of texts with the manager, yes,
- 2:56Speaker 1: Michael mcgreeby brought up to be the twenty seventh man.
- 2:58Speaker 1: As we know, this will not impact his availability or
- 3:01Speaker 1: eligibility to be called up again on June twenty fourth,
- 3:05Speaker 1: which is the Tuesday game between the Cubs, should the
- 3:08Speaker 1: Cardinals elect to go that route, they will end up
- 3:12Speaker 1: using another temporary six man starter, similar to how they
- 3:15Speaker 1: have in weeks prior when they do that.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Not sure.
- 3:19Speaker 1: They were tentatively looking at July or June twenty fourth,
- 3:22Speaker 1: excuse me for that date.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Not sure with the doubleheader if they will.
- 3:25Speaker 1: But we will see Michael McGreevy again at some point
- 3:28Speaker 1: in the next couple of weeks after as the Cardinals
- 3:31Speaker 1: next off day is not until July third, so.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Hopefully, And it's going well so far.
- 3:36Speaker 1: If Michael mcgevy can handle the Mets and the Dodgers,
- 3:38Speaker 1: he should be able to handle the White Sox. But
- 3:40Speaker 1: at this point, Bernie, we'd understand and we know why
- 3:43Speaker 1: Michael McGreevy isn't in this rotation.
- 3:45Speaker 2: But I mean, what.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Else does he have to do, and what's in your mind,
- 3:50Speaker 1: what's the best path to get him in Saint Louis
- 3:52Speaker 1: pitching continuously every five six days.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Well, you know, I gotta be honest with you. I mean,
- 4:00Speaker 3: and I do understand it, Okay, I do understand it
- 4:02Speaker 3: from a logical standpoint. But then I sit here. I
- 4:06Speaker 3: got a lot of time to think. You know. Up
- 4:08Speaker 3: in my lair, which is my office, I have a
- 4:10Speaker 3: lot of time to think. I'm in here all day,
- 4:14Speaker 3: and then I get annoyed because the Cardinals, you know,
- 4:18Speaker 3: they they want to tell us over and over and
- 4:21Speaker 3: over again, it's a runway season. It's a runway season.
- 4:24Speaker 3: Young players opportunities here, we go, roll out the runway, okay,
- 4:27Speaker 3: and it's like, yeah, okay, we're all on board with that.
- 4:30Speaker 3: But then they make decisions that indicate, hey, we're trying
- 4:33Speaker 3: to win, you know we Yeah, we got to try
- 4:35Speaker 3: to win. Okay, so yeah, we're we're gonna give ourselves
- 4:37Speaker 3: the best chance to win. It's not always going to
- 4:39Speaker 3: be about the runway. But this is what irritates me
- 4:42Speaker 3: about the McGreevy situation. He's both Okay, you're right, he's both.
- 4:49Speaker 3: He fits the runway. In fact, he may be the
- 4:52Speaker 3: epitome of a runway pitcher or player, and he also
- 4:58Speaker 3: increases your chances of winning because he's really really good.
- 5:02Speaker 3: So why isn't he in your rotation. I'll try not
- 5:05Speaker 3: to holler, would holler at you, Kate, But it's like,
- 5:08Speaker 3: if you think about it in those terms, it's just
- 5:11Speaker 3: exasperating because it really doesn't make a lot of sense.
- 5:15Speaker 3: But to your question, I don't know. Do you trade uh?
- 5:19Speaker 3: Do you trade fetti at the trade deadline? Do you
- 5:22Speaker 3: do you say thank you to Miles Michaelis but we
- 5:26Speaker 3: have to move on. Do you send Pilante to Memphis
- 5:29Speaker 3: to work on some stuff? I don't know, but if you,
- 5:32Speaker 3: if you want, If this is a Runway season and
- 5:35Speaker 3: you have a runway pitcher and the picture happens to
- 5:38Speaker 3: be outstanding every time you give him a chance, why
- 5:43Speaker 3: does he have to take his suitcase back to Memphis
- 5:45Speaker 3: so often? I don't it's just.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Here, Bernie, let me add a banner for you. I
- 5:50Speaker 1: feel like this, this is something, this would be the
- 5:53Speaker 1: new segment.
- 5:54Speaker 3: Yeah, I love it.
- 5:55Speaker 4: I love it.
- 5:55Speaker 5: Yeah, you're spot on, like he is the.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Best off for Runway and results and we haven't seen him.
- 6:04Speaker 2: And I understand it. I you know, have never really
- 6:07Speaker 2: loved it.
- 6:08Speaker 1: But I get what they're doing and I can't think
- 6:10Speaker 1: of a I can't think of something that disproves their
- 6:14Speaker 1: theory here because they are right.
- 6:15Speaker 3: I just don't like it.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Okay, that's right, that's right, right.
- 6:18Speaker 1: But a credit to McGreevy, who, when I talked to
- 6:21Speaker 1: him after the Dodgers spot start, said like, hey, this
- 6:24Speaker 1: you know, it's not ideal, but it's the business. I
- 6:26Speaker 1: get it, and I'm in a good spot mentally here
- 6:27Speaker 1: and I can handle this and I believe him, and
- 6:30Speaker 1: that's something that I think is only going to suit
- 6:32Speaker 1: him more going further.
- 6:34Speaker 2: And it's why Ollie Marmal likes him so much. Look,
- 6:36Speaker 2: it's not like the Cardinals don't want Michael McGreevy and
- 6:38Speaker 2: Saint Louis. Do you know who probably wants him here
- 6:41Speaker 2: the most? Allie? Do you know who also wants him here? Mo? Like?
- 6:45Speaker 2: It's not a matter of every like not.
- 6:49Speaker 3: Well, they're in charge, aren't they.
- 6:50Speaker 2: They're in charge.
- 6:51Speaker 1: They want him here, they don't have room for him.
- 6:53Speaker 1: I think you're right when you gave those three options.
- 6:56Speaker 1: I think the most the highest probability of those options
- 6:59Speaker 1: is the Cardinals. Look, whether they buy or sell, and
- 7:01Speaker 1: that's a different conversation. I'm not ready to have that
- 7:04Speaker 1: conversation on June nineteenth. But whether they buy or sell,
- 7:07Speaker 1: you can trade Eric Fetti, who was in his final
- 7:10Speaker 1: year of a seven point five million dollar contract, who's
- 7:12Speaker 1: having a good year, who is going to show what
- 7:15Speaker 1: quick math, maybe two million dollars for the rest of
- 7:17Speaker 1: the season, probably a little less to be a league
- 7:20Speaker 1: average starter and has value. You can offload him and
- 7:25Speaker 1: trade him and create a spot for McGreevy if you
- 7:28Speaker 1: feel comfortable with the depth and Triple A now with
- 7:31Speaker 1: some heavy arms have come back from the injured list,
- 7:33Speaker 1: when Matthews's back team hands is back to cohe where
- 7:35Speaker 1: we just promoted to Triple A earlier in the month.
- 7:38Speaker 1: I'm not saying rush them up as the last thing
- 7:40Speaker 1: the Cardinals should be doing with those three pictures, but
- 7:43Speaker 1: you maybe feel a little bit more comfortable with your
- 7:45Speaker 1: depth in August. If those pictures stay healthy and perform, well,
- 7:49Speaker 1: that's the conversation that you can have and say, maybe
- 7:51Speaker 1: the Cardinals trade Eric Fetti, create that position for McGreevy.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Just two months of runway, and by doing that, maybe
- 7:59Speaker 2: you're old.
- 8:00Speaker 1: I'm so boosting your team because by trading Fetti, by
- 8:02Speaker 1: trading almost the majority of these guys, if the Cardinals
- 8:05Speaker 1: decided to do that, it's not about the return, okay,
- 8:08Speaker 1: it's about creating other opportunities for playing time. Where think
- 8:12Speaker 1: of the Detroit Tigers last year, for example, what the
- 8:15Speaker 1: Tigers did at the deadline, offloading expiring talent and opening
- 8:19Speaker 1: up runway for some of their younger guys actually made
- 8:22Speaker 1: them a better team.
- 8:23Speaker 2: They snuck into the playoffs.
- 8:24Speaker 1: That's the ideal blueprint for the Cardinals, if they can
- 8:27Speaker 1: do that with an Eric Fetti, because I don't think
- 8:28Speaker 1: they're gonna be able to do that with michaelis full,
- 8:30Speaker 1: no trade clause owed a little bit more money, hasn't
- 8:33Speaker 1: been as effective as Eric Fetti. And I don't think
- 8:35Speaker 1: they're going to move Plant into the bullpen because of
- 8:37Speaker 1: the depth reasons. So if they can offload Fetty and
- 8:39Speaker 1: bring McGreevy in, that makes sense. But that just goes
- 8:43Speaker 1: into if they.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Trust their depth right now, I guess we'll see.
- 8:45Speaker 1: We'll see McGreevy in like brandom bursts of happiness because
- 8:50Speaker 1: I'm with you, Bertie, you should be here.
- 8:52Speaker 5: He should.
- 8:52Speaker 3: And then you know, quinnin Atthews, I thought the Cardinals,
- 8:56Speaker 3: the people down below were really smart. I mean, he
- 8:58Speaker 3: had some shoulder fatigue, some mild distress, and they did
- 9:02Speaker 3: the smart thing. They not only shut him down, but
- 9:05Speaker 3: when he was in his downtime, they kind of smoothed
- 9:07Speaker 3: out some mechanical flaws. I mean that See, this is
- 9:10Speaker 3: my hope, and I think it's every once hope for
- 9:12Speaker 3: the Cardinals player development and farm system, you're going to
- 9:15Speaker 3: have like really good, smart, proactive handling of your well
- 9:20Speaker 3: all your guys, but your best guys. So since he's
- 9:23Speaker 3: been back, he's made three starts and he's been outstanding.
- 9:26Speaker 3: His strikeout rate is like thirty five percent, you know,
- 9:30Speaker 3: and er like one point three six or something. But
- 9:33Speaker 3: the point is it just reminds you just how talented
- 9:37Speaker 3: he is. Now if he continues down this track of
- 9:41Speaker 3: just striking people out and looking great and everything else, well,
- 9:45Speaker 3: the runway is going to get even more crowded. And
- 9:48Speaker 3: I know that the Cardinals can push Matthews back until
- 9:51Speaker 3: twenty twenty six. I get it, But I'm just wondering
- 9:55Speaker 3: other than Libataur and I commend the Cardinals for giving
- 9:59Speaker 3: him a shot this year. Are they ever? We all
- 10:03Speaker 3: talk about whether they we'll have enough pitching prospects. Oh,
- 10:05Speaker 3: it's been a failure for years. They don't develop their own. Well,
- 10:08Speaker 3: they're finally developing their own and you sort of have
- 10:13Speaker 3: them parked in neutral I mean metaphorically speaking. So I'm
- 10:17Speaker 3: gonna be I'm gonna see. It's really interesting. It's whether
- 10:21Speaker 3: Quinn Matthews becomes a factor in this, and because maybe
- 10:26Speaker 3: he's next in line after McGreevy, whether this would be
- 10:30Speaker 3: some kind of spur to push McGreevy forward and then
- 10:35Speaker 3: to use the runway method to get rid of the
- 10:38Speaker 3: runway metaphor again, and then the next the next picture
- 10:41Speaker 3: for takeoff would be Matthews, right, I don't.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Know, maybe maybe Matthews, maybe Roby. I think you can
- 10:47Speaker 1: have the composition with both of those. I think Tin
- 10:49Speaker 1: Kent is a little bit more behind. But again, this
- 10:52Speaker 1: just all goes into well, I'm really excited about Quinn Matthews,
- 10:55Speaker 1: and I'm really excited about Tokoorobi.
- 10:57Speaker 2: You know, Hols is really excited about to Kobe all
- 10:59Speaker 2: In Marmal He's like that we it's not.
- 11:01Speaker 1: The major league manager's job to memorize the minor league
- 11:04Speaker 1: stat lines out of all the things that they have
- 11:06Speaker 1: on their plate that you know, he'll get the email
- 11:08Speaker 1: and he'll understand what's going on then. But he seems
- 11:10Speaker 1: to always know what's going on with Roby, So that
- 11:11Speaker 1: says a lot about where he is on mar Allie
- 11:14Speaker 1: Marble's scale. This all goes back to death though, and
- 11:18Speaker 1: creating death and ensuring you have enough is important. The Cardinals,
- 11:21Speaker 1: knock on Wood again, have not had any major pitching injuries,
- 11:24Speaker 1: and they actually candidly probably expected McGreevy in the rotation
- 11:28Speaker 1: by now because they're planning for an injury. It's so
- 11:32Speaker 1: rare in this day, especially to not have a significant
- 11:36Speaker 1: rotation injury. I'm gonna stop talking about it before I
- 11:38Speaker 1: drink some. But it's it's a good problem to have.
- 11:43Speaker 1: It doesn't make it any more frustrating.
- 11:44Speaker 2: So looking forward to see, oh it's six to one,
- 11:46Speaker 2: I wonder how they scored.
- 11:47Speaker 3: I don't know, you know what I was watched. I
- 11:49Speaker 3: had the game on TV here and I have a
- 11:51Speaker 3: pretty big TV set in my office, and I noticed
- 11:54Speaker 3: it when I was getting ready for you like, because
- 11:56Speaker 3: because of the camera shots and all this stuff, it
- 11:58Speaker 3: was like flickering. Yeah, I thought. I thought, like in
- 12:01Speaker 3: the background, it's like the lights would be changing colored.
- 12:04Speaker 3: People be thinking what is he doing in there?
- 12:06Speaker 1: Is he?
- 12:06Speaker 2: Like?
- 12:07Speaker 3: Like, what's up with that? Is he is? You know?
- 12:09Speaker 3: Is he having some kind of psychedelic moment or something?
- 12:12Speaker 3: So I thought I better just I better pause it.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Let's let's do that.
- 12:15Speaker 1: We'll do an episode on like psychedelic experience, so that'd
- 12:18Speaker 1: be really good.
- 12:19Speaker 3: So funny way, No.
- 12:22Speaker 1: It's it's a fair point, and I think moral of
- 12:24Speaker 1: the story for this segment, we got to see more
- 12:26Speaker 1: Maa Greeby.
- 12:27Speaker 2: I believe we will. I'm not.
- 12:28Speaker 1: They're probably gonna send him. They are going to send
- 12:30Speaker 1: him down because he's twenty seventh man.
- 12:31Speaker 2: They have to.
- 12:32Speaker 1: He's not eligible to be recalled until the twenty fourth.
- 12:34Speaker 1: We will see him most likely, like ninety nine point
- 12:37Speaker 1: five percent at some point between the twenty fourth and
- 12:40Speaker 1: July third, we want to see more, all right, Wrapping
- 12:45Speaker 1: that one up, quick message from HelloFresh, and then Bernie
- 12:48Speaker 1: and I are back with you to talk about some
- 12:49Speaker 1: NL Central Division mashups coming up.

- 13:51Speaker 6: new subscribers only.
- 13:52Speaker 5: Varies by plant.
- 13:55Speaker 1: All Right after this White Sox game, the Cardinals come
- 13:58Speaker 1: back to Bus Stadium. Seven homestand against the Reds and
- 14:01Speaker 1: then four against the Cubs, thirteen of their next sixteen
- 14:04Speaker 1: games versus NL Central opponents. I cannot believe we over
- 14:08Speaker 1: We are over a third of the way through the
- 14:09Speaker 1: season and we have not seen the Chicago Cubs yet.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Uh, this is a huge series. Get we got to
- 14:15Speaker 2: go through the Reds first.
- 14:16Speaker 3: I get that.
- 14:16Speaker 1: I understand when I'm sure at a time, let's not
- 14:19Speaker 1: minimize where the things are in the NL Central standings.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Let me look them up right now, because I'm not
- 14:23Speaker 2: sure if they've changed.
- 14:25Speaker 3: I think I think the Reds were getting beat bad today.
- 14:27Speaker 3: I assume they lost, but I guess I shouldn't count
- 14:30Speaker 3: on that.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Okay, So the Brewers beat the Cubs and the Reds lost,
- 14:34Speaker 1: So the Cardinals they'll pick up what half a game
- 14:37Speaker 1: today could move If they win five and a half
- 14:40Speaker 1: games back from the Cubs tied.
- 14:41Speaker 2: With the Brewers a four game series, A lot can
- 14:43Speaker 2: go down there.
- 14:44Speaker 1: So am I being dramatic by saying this week is
- 14:47Speaker 1: super telling for how the Cardinals trade deadline will go.
- 14:51Speaker 3: No, I think you're right, because you know, first of all,
- 14:56Speaker 3: you know I think the Cubs are going to run
- 14:58Speaker 3: away with the division, but you know you still want
- 15:01Speaker 3: to see how you measure up against him, and if
- 15:04Speaker 3: you can win that series somehow, win three out of four,
- 15:06Speaker 3: you know it'd be good for your psyche and a
- 15:08Speaker 3: lot of other things. But you also have to handle
- 15:11Speaker 3: Cincinnati because Cincinnati. Let me look at my notes here,
- 15:14Speaker 3: like with the loss today, they've still won nine out
- 15:17Speaker 3: of their last twelve, and they're nineteen. They're nineteen and
- 15:20Speaker 3: twelve in their last thirty one games. They're starting, pitching
- 15:23Speaker 3: is really good. Even with Hunter Green out, they've been
- 15:25Speaker 3: scoring a lot more runs. Even though even though you
- 15:31Speaker 3: know they plugged in what's his name, Paglia or Pigott,
- 15:36Speaker 3: I'm sorry, he's been a lights out closer. So all
- 15:39Speaker 3: of a sudden, that thing looks a lot more firmed up.
- 15:42Speaker 3: And I'm not saying they're super team, but they're clearly
- 15:44Speaker 3: playing better. And these two teams split in Cincinnati. Now
- 15:48Speaker 3: the Reds eat despite the loss today, they're going to
- 15:50Speaker 3: come in here, you know, kind of strutting a little bit.
- 15:53Speaker 3: You know, this is just all right, we got hey,
- 15:55Speaker 3: we're Terry or Francona's team. Now we sateened some things out.
- 15:58Speaker 3: Let's go get the Cardinals and beat him in their place.
- 16:01Speaker 3: So I do think it is I use this word
- 16:04Speaker 3: a lot. I think it really isn't good test for
- 16:06Speaker 3: the Cardinals because look, I never ever ever de duct
- 16:11Speaker 3: points from when the Cardinals beat up on a bad team.
- 16:13Speaker 3: And if they sweep the White Sox or they went
- 16:15Speaker 3: two out of three. They did their job. Okay, I
- 16:17Speaker 3: don't nitpick that because you can't lose the bad team,
- 16:22Speaker 3: so if you beat them, you get credit for that.
- 16:24Speaker 3: But now the next seven games after this, it's going
- 16:28Speaker 3: to be challenge time for sure. And I don't want
- 16:33Speaker 3: to overlook the Reds because the Reds, you know, you
- 16:35Speaker 3: look look at you look at the four starting pitchers
- 16:38Speaker 3: that are healthy, you know, Abbot and Lodolo and Singer
- 16:40Speaker 3: and Martinez their last twenty four starts, you know, combined
- 16:45Speaker 3: their eras a little over three. So the Reds are
- 16:48Speaker 3: coming in here with some great pitching, and I think
- 16:51Speaker 3: that I think it's it's going to be fascinating to
- 16:54Speaker 3: see if the Reds are better than the Cardinals now
- 16:57Speaker 3: and they're about they're about a dead heat in the state.
- 17:01Speaker 3: So or is this going to be the Cardinal series
- 17:03Speaker 3: to sort of push back and say, Okay, we went
- 17:05Speaker 3: through some hard times, right, we're feeling better. Now we're
- 17:09Speaker 3: going to take you down in our place. You know,
- 17:11Speaker 3: I don't know, I kind of love the psychology this series.
- 17:14Speaker 3: The next three days, before you even.
- 17:16Speaker 2: Get to the Cups, I'm with you and I'm a
- 17:19Speaker 2: self I'll say it.
- 17:20Speaker 1: I'm kind of a Reds hater because every year I
- 17:23Speaker 1: come in and I'm like, oh, they could surprise some people.
- 17:26Speaker 2: They have, you know, an athletic roster.
- 17:28Speaker 1: I was hoping to see some some things that are
- 17:30Speaker 1: Terry Francona, I like their pitching, and then every year
- 17:33Speaker 1: they're just kind of like five hundred and I'm like,
- 17:35Speaker 1: why did I believe? So I decided not to believe
- 17:38Speaker 1: this year, and I'm a little skeptical on if this
- 17:40Speaker 1: is sustainable. But you make great points about this Reds
- 17:43Speaker 1: team and this is going to be a very compelling series,
- 17:45Speaker 1: and I like what you said about is this something
- 17:47Speaker 1: where the Cardinals went through a tough stretch which they knew.
- 17:50Speaker 1: They knew coming into June that this was going to
- 17:52Speaker 1: be brutal. They knew this was going to be tough,
- 17:53Speaker 1: and they knew that this might not go according to
- 17:55Speaker 1: plan with I think we just all really underestimated the
- 17:59Speaker 1: amount of consecutive games in a row and how much
- 18:02Speaker 1: of a toll that would take, especially when you had
- 18:04Speaker 1: players like Jordan Walker unavailable for two weeks. Laras Newbar
- 18:07Speaker 1: had to take a little mini hiatus, Brendan Donnovan out
- 18:09Speaker 1: for four games, so you're relying on a lot of
- 18:12Speaker 1: depth that the Cardinals don't really have. Now, if they
- 18:14Speaker 1: can come in against the Reds and take care of
- 18:15Speaker 1: business and you know, at least split against the Cubs,
- 18:19Speaker 1: are you feeling more confident like the May version of
- 18:22Speaker 1: the Cardinals, and are you more likely to say, okay,
- 18:24Speaker 1: the first two weeks of June was kind of just
- 18:26Speaker 1: a fluke and part of the ups and downs at
- 18:28Speaker 1: this baseball season. Because I'm inclined to think just depending
- 18:31Speaker 1: on how the games go, if they go four and
- 18:33Speaker 1: three against the Cubs and the Reds, I'm more inclined
- 18:37Speaker 1: to get back to the May side than the June side.
- 18:40Speaker 3: It's a fascinating thing because the more I watch them
- 18:44Speaker 3: and I look at the fact that before they went
- 18:46Speaker 3: on that fourteen and three tear, okay, they were five
- 18:50Speaker 3: games on five hundred, and then once that was over
- 18:54Speaker 3: or once one of their big streaks maybe they're twenty
- 18:57Speaker 3: and seventh streak was over, then they say, then they
- 19:00Speaker 3: were until these last couple of wins, they were like
- 19:03Speaker 3: three or four games under five hundred. So they've had
- 19:05Speaker 3: the one hot streak, but they've been a losing team
- 19:08Speaker 3: in the two other phases of the season. So what
- 19:13Speaker 3: that tells me, I think, because every time I lock
- 19:16Speaker 3: in on the Cardinals they do something different, Like I think, oh,
- 19:19Speaker 3: they're boy, they're okay, they're returning to Earth, and then
- 19:22Speaker 3: they go flying again. You know, here they come. So
- 19:26Speaker 3: I think for this team here, here's what I think.
- 19:30Speaker 3: For this team to be consistently good and I'm not
- 19:33Speaker 3: saying great, but consistently good where they avoid those down
- 19:38Speaker 3: times that take a lot out of them. For that
- 19:42Speaker 3: to happen, they have to have so many guys position
- 19:45Speaker 3: players and pitchers like sort of playing close to their
- 19:50Speaker 3: ceiling of ability. And if those guys who when you're
- 19:56Speaker 3: when the team's going well, they're they're kind of collectively
- 19:59Speaker 3: reaching their as individuals, right.
- 20:02Speaker 2: But.
- 20:04Speaker 3: They're not quite established where that consistency is there. So
- 20:07Speaker 3: if they're not hitting their ceilings or they're not close
- 20:09Speaker 3: to their ceilings, and we saw that with the lineup recently,
- 20:12Speaker 3: and you have about four or five guys at one
- 20:13Speaker 3: time or just aren't hitting, it's pretty ugly. Or your
- 20:17Speaker 3: rotation a couple three of your starters go through a rut,
- 20:20Speaker 3: it's pretty ugly. So I'm not saying they have to
- 20:23Speaker 3: be great, But I think it's a team that frankly
- 20:28Speaker 3: is kind of wired to have a lot of ups
- 20:31Speaker 3: and downs. But how do they get past the part
- 20:34Speaker 3: of it's inevitable to have a lot of ups and downs?
- 20:38Speaker 3: You know what I mean? I'm kind of looking at
- 20:39Speaker 3: it from an overview standpoint, but I'm still not sure
- 20:43Speaker 3: who they are, except maybe that's who they are. They're
- 20:46Speaker 3: going to be an up and down team, and in.
- 20:49Speaker 1: A season that's designated for runway and opportunity and adjusting
- 20:53Speaker 1: and readjusting, that does make sense.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Does it make it easy for us? No? Does it
- 20:57Speaker 2: make it easy for the fans? No? But I'm not boring,
- 21:01Speaker 2: And in this season where expectations.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Were on the floor and there was an overall just whatever, apathetic, frustrated,
- 21:11Speaker 1: disinterested view over this organization, having a baseball team that
- 21:16Speaker 1: is objectively not boring and performing above expectations, you know,
- 21:22Speaker 1: highs and lows aside, I think that we can get
- 21:25Speaker 1: on board with that. I'm not saying that here that
- 21:28Speaker 1: they're going to go and make the playoffs. I have
- 21:29Speaker 1: no idea what their trade deadline is going to look like.
- 21:31Speaker 1: I have no idea in the next four weeks how
- 21:33Speaker 1: their play is going to impact those decisions. And I
- 21:36Speaker 1: have no idea how not Mo, not Heim Bloom, how
- 21:39Speaker 1: ownership will respond to their play, because ultimately those are
- 21:42Speaker 1: the ones making the decisions this year. MO will have
- 21:45Speaker 1: all to say over you know, the baseball operation standpoint,
- 21:49Speaker 1: but as terms like as far as the finances go
- 21:51Speaker 1: and the money and the payroll, that's ownership, So all
- 21:54Speaker 1: those things outside of our control. The thing that we
- 21:56Speaker 1: can watch every day is is team play. And when
- 21:58Speaker 1: you have a team that has a learned the big
- 22:00Speaker 1: leagues in real time, you're gonna see players like Victor
- 22:03Speaker 1: Scott the second have some real low weeks. You're gonna
- 22:05Speaker 1: see Lars Newbar have some real low weeks. You're gonna
- 22:07Speaker 1: see Brendan Donovan have some highs, and you're gonna see
- 22:10Speaker 1: Matthew Libertore be really good one start and not so
- 22:12Speaker 1: good the next start.
- 22:13Speaker 2: And that's kind of I think I think you nailed
- 22:16Speaker 2: at Bernie.
- 22:16Speaker 1: Like, the overall approach for this Cardinals team is there's
- 22:19Speaker 1: gonna be some highs and lows, and if they can
- 22:21Speaker 1: figure out a way to whether the highs a little
- 22:23Speaker 1: bit more consistently, maybe we have a much more exciting
- 22:26Speaker 1: second half than we originally thought.
- 22:28Speaker 3: Can I throw one more thing into and the guys
- 22:30Speaker 3: that we are coming into the season and I should
- 22:35Speaker 3: have It just occurred to me to think of it
- 22:37Speaker 3: this way, or I would have written down a listed names.
- 22:39Speaker 3: So I didn't forget anybody but the guys who came
- 22:41Speaker 3: into the season with established records who are good and
- 22:44Speaker 3: we expected them to be good, maybe even great those guys.
- 22:49Speaker 3: I understand the fluctuations with the people trying to get established,
- 22:54Speaker 3: but Sonny Gray's got to be more consistent. They really
- 22:57Speaker 3: need Ryan Helsley to fix that fastball. They really need
- 23:01Speaker 3: that because they're going to play a lot of tight games.
- 23:04Speaker 3: He's nowhere close to himself, at least based on twenty
- 23:08Speaker 3: twenty four. That was a nice save today, But until
- 23:11Speaker 3: that fastball gets fixed, you know, you're not sure what
- 23:17Speaker 3: to expect from him from save opportunity to save opportunity.
- 23:22Speaker 3: And that's a really dangerous thing for the Cardinals because
- 23:25Speaker 3: last year they were not a super team. And I'm
- 23:27Speaker 3: not putting all this on Hellsley, but they were not
- 23:30Speaker 3: a super team last year. But why did they win
- 23:32Speaker 3: eighty three games? Because the bullpen, the setup guys were great,
- 23:37Speaker 3: and he just basically went boom every time he came
- 23:40Speaker 3: out to put one away. And that's not the case
- 23:44Speaker 3: this year. And during this bad stretch they've been they've
- 23:47Speaker 3: they've been in and coming out of, he was really shaky.
- 23:50Speaker 3: So I don't mean to put it all on Sunny Gray,
- 23:53Speaker 3: and I'm just saying, Sonny Gray is the guy that
- 23:55Speaker 3: leads your rotation. He's got to be a hammer. Ryan
- 23:58Speaker 3: Helsley's got to be a hammer. Who else would you
- 24:01Speaker 3: put in that category? A guy that a hitter or
- 24:04Speaker 3: pitcher that's established that's being really good and the Cardinals
- 24:08Speaker 3: need them to be really good, I mean, or else
- 24:11Speaker 3: if they fluctuate just like the young guys, then you're
- 24:14Speaker 3: not going to be real successful consistently. Who else would
- 24:18Speaker 3: you put in that camp?
- 24:19Speaker 2: You're right on the Sunny grade. They're paying him to
- 24:21Speaker 2: be the ace.
- 24:21Speaker 1: He needs to pitch like the ace, and he's had
- 24:24Speaker 1: a good season, but you'd like to see him be
- 24:25Speaker 1: a little bit more consistent. Hellsley couldn't agree more. I'd
- 24:30Speaker 1: say controers, and he has done that. I mean, the
- 24:32Speaker 1: first two weeks of the season were not great. But
- 24:35Speaker 1: since then he's been one of the most productive hitters.
- 24:37Speaker 1: And honestly, I would have said heading into the season,
- 24:39Speaker 1: Nolan Arnado, but I the ops is right around seven
- 24:44Speaker 1: hundred right now, and yet the offense seems to be
- 24:46Speaker 1: doing okay without him, because.
- 24:48Speaker 2: I mean, I'm not saying he's not contributing.
- 24:50Speaker 1: He's had ten homers on the ear, but he's not
- 24:52Speaker 1: contributing to the level that the Cardinals needed him to
- 24:55Speaker 1: or that he expects of himself. But the reason that
- 24:57Speaker 1: they've been able to get away from that and be
- 24:59Speaker 1: okay with that is because guys like Brendan Donovan and
- 25:02Speaker 1: Von Herrera have come up and really established themselves as.
- 25:04Speaker 2: Legit major league hitters in different ways.
- 25:06Speaker 1: Brendan Donovan is the contact, get on base kind of guy,
- 25:09Speaker 1: and Herrera is he's like their big moment bat.
- 25:12Speaker 2: When was the last time the Cardinals had a bat.
- 25:14Speaker 1: In the lineup where in late inning game situation, runners
- 25:18Speaker 1: in scoring position, you felt good about it.
- 25:20Speaker 2: You're like, you know who's going to come through for
- 25:22Speaker 2: us right now? Yvon Herrera.
- 25:24Speaker 1: And in this very short sample size, he's given me
- 25:27Speaker 1: a ton of confidence in those big moments. So I
- 25:30Speaker 1: wouldn't say that they need to perform this year because
- 25:32Speaker 1: that shouldn't be the expectation. But now that those two
- 25:35Speaker 1: have proven that they can and they've set the expectations
- 25:37Speaker 1: for themselves going forward, they need to be able to
- 25:39Speaker 1: sustain this if they if the Cardinals want to be.
- 25:42Speaker 3: Good, that's exactly right. And I love watching Avon Herrera.
- 25:47Speaker 2: Bet.
- 25:47Speaker 3: I don't like watching them catch, but I love that.
- 25:50Speaker 3: I love watching him swing the bat. And he's such
- 25:55Speaker 3: a confident hitter and he's so smart. And the thing
- 25:57Speaker 3: about it is, and you saw him go through We
- 25:59Speaker 3: saw him go through a drought recently, and he got
- 26:03Speaker 3: through it. He's smart, He adjusted, he figured out what
- 26:06Speaker 3: they were doing. He's a very cerebral guy when it
- 26:08Speaker 3: comes to hitting a baseball and wondering what pitchers are
- 26:11Speaker 3: going to do. He doesn't get tricked a lot. So
- 26:14Speaker 3: he's only going to get better and better and better.
- 26:16Speaker 3: And that's pretty exciting for the Cardinals and their fans
- 26:18Speaker 3: for the future. But I'm with you in Wilson Contreres.
- 26:21Speaker 4: He is.
- 26:22Speaker 3: Look, I don't know about the inner dynamics of leadership
- 26:25Speaker 3: in the clubhouse, about who gives the speeches and all
- 26:27Speaker 3: that if anybody gives speeches anymore. But certainly his presence
- 26:31Speaker 3: and his personality and his intensity on the field, as
- 26:34Speaker 3: we saw in Milwaukee, saw it a little bit in
- 26:36Speaker 3: this series. I think I think his younger teammates are
- 26:41Speaker 3: just really fired up by him. He's careless, he doesn't
- 26:45Speaker 3: give a damn.
- 26:46Speaker 1: You know, he's not, as evidenced by his interview postgame
- 26:49Speaker 1: on Saturday against the Brewers.
- 26:51Speaker 2: Look, I have learned in my five years on the
- 26:55Speaker 2: beat that you.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Should always expect the unexpected. I did not expect Wilson
- 27:00Speaker 1: Conturis to go secon mode.
- 27:02Speaker 5: On the live post.
- 27:03Speaker 1: So I can't repeat those words on this TV. My
- 27:06Speaker 1: grandma watches the show sometimes, so I will not. But
- 27:09Speaker 1: I think we all know what we're at, what incident
- 27:11Speaker 1: we're talking about with Wilson. But let me tell you,
- 27:13Speaker 1: the clubhouse was like shocked.
- 27:15Speaker 2: For a second.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Those young guys are like, no way, he just said that,
- 27:17Speaker 1: Because we're in the visiting club much smaller so you
- 27:19Speaker 1: hear everything, and all of a sudden, just.
- 27:22Speaker 2: Like they just erupted. They were like no way, Like
- 27:26Speaker 2: who says that?
- 27:27Speaker 1: But he's done a really nice job, I think, and
- 27:29Speaker 1: Nolan too, of letting this clubhouse these young guys be
- 27:33Speaker 1: themselves this year, where in twenty one and twenty two,
- 27:37Speaker 1: twenty three go on, there were a bunch of established
- 27:39Speaker 1: veterans with a high expectation of how not just how
- 27:43Speaker 1: baseball should be played, but how being a Cardinal should
- 27:45Speaker 1: look and feel. And I'm not taken away from that
- 27:48Speaker 1: because obviously those veterans, no matter what ones you're thinking of,
- 27:51Speaker 1: have had tremendous success both personally and with the team.
- 27:55Speaker 1: And when you're in the Saint it was Cardinals, it's
- 27:57Speaker 1: so important to have a culture established in that club house.
- 28:00Speaker 1: But this is not a normal year for Saint Louis, right,
- 28:03Speaker 1: It's it's one where they can start to establish their
- 28:05Speaker 1: own culture. Anderson Arnatto said, Okay, we're going to let
- 28:08Speaker 1: them do that. And Sonny Gray said, I'm going to
- 28:10Speaker 1: let them do that. I'm gonna let those pictures come
- 28:12Speaker 1: to me. I'll be there for them, and he has been.
- 28:14Speaker 1: I mean, Sonny has a different picture with him every day.
- 28:16Speaker 1: But we're going to let them figure out what they
- 28:18Speaker 1: want the culture to be and we're going to give
- 28:20Speaker 1: them the opportunity to develop there as well.
- 28:22Speaker 2: And that's done a lot, maybe more than I would
- 28:24Speaker 2: have expected.
- 28:25Speaker 3: Smart it is, it's really smart. And listen, you know,
- 28:28Speaker 3: as someone who chronicled the Cardinals during the Tony LaRussa
- 28:31Speaker 3: era and even beyond, because they were still really good
- 28:34Speaker 3: through twenty fifteen, the whole Cardinal Way thing mattered. And
- 28:42Speaker 3: the whole Cardinal Way thing was also misrepresented a lot
- 28:45Speaker 3: by people in the media. But even Mike Mentheni, the manager,
- 28:49Speaker 3: it was never meant to be like, oh, we're holier
- 28:51Speaker 3: than now, We're you know, oh we're we have good morals,
- 28:56Speaker 3: you know, we know, and that message sort of got
- 29:00Speaker 3: out there by frankly, some of the stuff Mike Methidi
- 29:02Speaker 3: would say, and then all of a sudden, the rest,
- 29:05Speaker 3: you know, basically national baseball media, they're sort of sort
- 29:08Speaker 3: of making fun of it. It's like, who these guys
- 29:10Speaker 3: are a little bit a little bit haughty here. Okay,
- 29:14Speaker 3: that part of it was was just ridiculous, right, But
- 29:19Speaker 3: the basic fundamentals and the principles that the Cardinal Way
- 29:24Speaker 3: that started by George Kissel, what they represent, that was
- 29:27Speaker 3: a real thing and they really really matter. However, and
- 29:29Speaker 3: I'll be quick here, However, that culture from a baseball
- 29:34Speaker 3: standpoint is still really something to aspire to. But I
- 29:39Speaker 3: thought I think the Cardinals were too slow to adapt
- 29:43Speaker 3: to the fact young players today it's just a different vibe.
- 29:48Speaker 3: It's a different setis cultural standards, and you have to
- 29:51Speaker 3: let guys be who they are. It can't be a
- 29:55Speaker 3: library in there, like if you have a loose clubhouse
- 29:57Speaker 3: with the young guys. You know, you can't be like, oh,
- 30:00Speaker 3: we better keep it down. You know, we just got
- 30:03Speaker 3: to look from you know, you can't have that. You
- 30:06Speaker 3: got to let them be who they are. To your point,
- 30:08Speaker 3: I'm backing up your point because you know, the Cardinal
- 30:11Speaker 3: way thing from a baseball standpoint, will live forever if
- 30:14Speaker 3: people take care of it. But the Cardinals did get
- 30:18Speaker 3: a little too haughty there for a while, and they're little,
- 30:20Speaker 3: little little too like button down and where the Cardinals
- 30:23Speaker 3: and we're immaculate, and all that stuff had to go away.
- 30:27Speaker 3: You got to let the boys be boys. Look at
- 30:30Speaker 3: all the great teams. Look at how much fun they have.
- 30:34Speaker 3: Look at how loose they are. They get dirty on
- 30:36Speaker 3: the field. I mean they're they're kind of rowdy, you know,
- 30:39Speaker 3: they play pranks on each other. They kind of put
- 30:42Speaker 3: all their personality out there. You gotta dapt with the times.
- 30:47Speaker 2: Yeah, agreed. And you know we hear a lot after
- 30:50Speaker 2: games or bad weeks where the veterans.
- 30:52Speaker 1: Are like, hey, I really like where our heads around
- 30:54Speaker 1: are here, Allie like, well, I really like where the
- 30:55Speaker 1: club is at right now.
- 30:56Speaker 2: I know fans Bowl the Rise and they're like, we
- 30:58Speaker 2: like winning games.
- 30:59Speaker 3: I get it.
- 31:00Speaker 2: But someone who's in the clubhouse every game.
- 31:03Speaker 1: The first time the Cardinals lost, I walked in there
- 31:06Speaker 1: and they had music playing, not bumping, not super loud,
- 31:08Speaker 1: but just like music like to hey, we're going home.
- 31:11Speaker 2: We'll go get them tomorrow.
- 31:13Speaker 1: And I remember myself and a couple of reporters stopping
- 31:15Speaker 1: and looking around like we've never heard that. Usually after
- 31:18Speaker 1: losses in years prior, you could hear your footsteps in
- 31:21Speaker 1: the clubhouse and we'd all have to like whisper in
- 31:23Speaker 1: our postgame interviews because it.
- 31:24Speaker 2: Was so quiet. Now it's like, hey, we lost, but
- 31:27Speaker 2: don't worry, we're gonna be back tomorrow. We're going to
- 31:28Speaker 2: be a good spot.
- 31:29Speaker 1: So I agree with you, Bernie. I really like what
- 31:32Speaker 1: these young kids are at. And we'll talk about a
- 31:35Speaker 1: little a couple more young kids in our final segment.
- 31:37Speaker 1: First though, from a message from.
- 31:39Speaker 5: PHG, it is summertime. We are in the thick of
- 31:43Speaker 5: golf season.
- 31:44Speaker 6: It's always golf season down in Florida, but we're in
- 31:46Speaker 6: the thick of golf season across the country and someone's
- 31:49Speaker 6: looking to get a new club.
- 31:51Speaker 5: That logo should say it all PXG. What do they do?
- 31:55Speaker 3: Don't get fitted?
- 31:56Speaker 4: Don't get fitted by their master fitters, professional fitters.
- 32:00Speaker 5: I've done it.
- 32:01Speaker 4: It's helped shave many strokes off my handicap. It is
- 32:03Speaker 4: worth it. It's educational. You learn about not only clubs,
- 32:06Speaker 4: you learn about chefs, you learn about grips, you learn
- 32:09Speaker 4: about angles. They have all the numbers, all the setups
- 32:11Speaker 4: that you need to help improve your handicap.
- 32:14Speaker 5: You feel like of VIP when you're there one hundred percent.
- 32:17Speaker 4: They even help my putting, which needed.
- 32:19Speaker 5: Help there They help your putting there there, that's how
- 32:22Speaker 5: cool it is.
- 32:23Speaker 6: So schedule you're fitting today and for a limited time
- 32:26Speaker 6: you could save up to twenty percent on your entire order.
- 32:29Speaker 6: Head over to PXG dot com slash foul. That's PXG
- 32:32Speaker 6: dot com slash foul to save up to twenty percent
- 32:34Speaker 6: on your entire order. P xg dot com slash foul
- 32:38Speaker 6: restrictions apply. Se site for detail.
- 32:42Speaker 2: All right, vibe chef, vibe check. It's still six to
- 32:45Speaker 2: one Saint Louis in the bottom of the fifth.
- 32:48Speaker 3: And by the way, how about Alec Burlson.
- 32:51Speaker 2: How about Alec Burlison.
- 32:52Speaker 3: I mean, now he's crushing left handed pictures yea, you.
- 32:57Speaker 2: Know, shouting out as the field. He had a ball
- 32:59Speaker 2: at as eyeballs, I.
- 33:00Speaker 3: Know, And it's just like I was watching that because
- 33:02Speaker 3: it's right before I got ready to come on with you,
- 33:04Speaker 3: and he's like he's I think he's figured this out,
- 33:08Speaker 3: you know, and and uh boy, he's fun to watch.
- 33:11Speaker 3: And that's one of the to me. I know, we're
- 33:13Speaker 3: talking about some younger players, but he's kind of in
- 33:15Speaker 3: between because he's not like this, you know, highly experienced
- 33:19Speaker 3: season major league player and he's still twenty six. He
- 33:23Speaker 3: still had some things to prove. But he may be
- 33:28Speaker 3: the success story if you're looking for like so called
- 33:30Speaker 3: runway or near runway players. He may be like the
- 33:34Speaker 3: best thing that's happened so far, right, And you know,
- 33:38Speaker 3: certainly with certainly with position players.
- 33:41Speaker 1: And this is the player who saw his runway cut
- 33:43Speaker 1: him and just the nature of not being able to
- 33:46Speaker 1: being able to trade Arana. We know that that brings
- 33:48Speaker 1: us to our great segue. As always Bernie, who's in
- 33:51Speaker 1: the line up and who's out. I'll tell you this,
- 33:53Speaker 1: I do not I don't know Olie marml right now
- 33:56Speaker 1: because he needs to play the kids, right, opportunity for Walker,
- 34:01Speaker 1: for Gorman, for Burlison, for a new bar, take your
- 34:03Speaker 1: pick Mason, Win, Brennan, Donovan, and there is virtually it's.
- 34:07Speaker 2: Impossible to play all of those players at the same time.
- 34:11Speaker 2: And here's where.
- 34:11Speaker 1: Things got will get a little dicey. We talked about
- 34:13Speaker 1: von Herrera earlier in the show. The plan was for
- 34:16Speaker 1: Herrara to be the starting catcher every day. Pedro Pa
- 34:19Speaker 1: has to be the backup. Pozel was never part of the.
- 34:22Speaker 2: Plan, okay.
- 34:23Speaker 1: And then Nolan Gorman, you're starting DH, put Donovan at
- 34:27Speaker 1: second Lars new Bar, and left, mix in opportunities for
- 34:31Speaker 1: Burlison in the corners or as the DH, leave.
- 34:34Speaker 2: Walker and right. That was the formula.
- 34:36Speaker 1: It wasn't perfect, but it was. You know what, this
- 34:38Speaker 1: is how we can guarantee the most in bats. Gorman
- 34:40Speaker 1: and Burlson are going to see a little bit reducted,
- 34:42Speaker 1: but overall we feel pretty.
- 34:43Speaker 2: Good about it. And then what happened.
- 34:45Speaker 1: Pedro Pa has emerged as the far far superior defensive catcher,
- 34:50Speaker 1: so he needs to play every day. But there's no
- 34:53Speaker 1: way the Cardinals are taking Herrera's bat out.
- 34:56Speaker 2: Of the lineup. So now you have a log jam.
- 34:59Speaker 1: And no matter what lineup, Ollie Marmal rolls out because
- 35:02Speaker 1: he's rolled out three different ones in three games, someone
- 35:05Speaker 1: that should be playing is on the bench and there's
- 35:08Speaker 1: no way he can get around it.
- 35:09Speaker 2: Bernie, who are the players that have to be playing
- 35:11Speaker 2: for you every single day?
- 35:13Speaker 3: Well, Pae should be the catcher, you know, not every
- 35:17Speaker 3: single day, but you know, but he should be. Contrall
- 35:20Speaker 3: should be the first basement for sure, Burl Lissen taking
- 35:23Speaker 3: some turns there when Contra scenes a day off or
- 35:25Speaker 3: he dhs Donovan should be the second baseman when Aaron
- 35:29Speaker 3: Otto speaking theself, you got to stick with Nuke barn left.
- 35:32Speaker 3: You ride with Scott for a while. You know, you
- 35:34Speaker 3: just got to have faith in him. He's a smart guy.
- 35:37Speaker 3: I think he's gonna adjust and start to hit a
- 35:40Speaker 3: little better. Looks like he is and Walker, listen, he
- 35:43Speaker 3: is like mister Runway, you got to stick with him too.
- 35:46Speaker 3: So Alec Burlison has secured his spot in the lineup,
- 35:51Speaker 3: like he's moved ahead of Gorman in terms of the
- 35:54Speaker 3: left handed hitter pecting order. The only thing that Frus
- 36:00Speaker 3: strats me a little bit about the Gorman situation. And
- 36:02Speaker 3: you and I were in in in the we still
- 36:05Speaker 3: are in the play Gorman camp, and we do realize
- 36:08Speaker 3: like you said, as Kevin Wheeler, my colleague came, Oh,
- 36:10Speaker 3: I said, you know, Ali's got this Rubik's cube every
- 36:13Speaker 3: day and he's trying to figure it out, and it's
- 36:15Speaker 3: just that you never can really get it to line up.
- 36:19Speaker 3: The only thing like what bothered me for I give
- 36:21Speaker 3: you an example. You know, Ali and everybody's teaching, preaching
- 36:26Speaker 3: patients about Nolan Gorman. It's like, listen, for this guy
- 36:29Speaker 3: to be a good major league hitter, he just had
- 36:32Speaker 3: to tear it all down and start from scratch. And
- 36:34Speaker 3: he has to improve his plate approach, his plate discipline,
- 36:37Speaker 3: and he's gonna he's not going to be swinging his
- 36:39Speaker 3: hard because you know, he can't be just gripping it
- 36:41Speaker 3: and ripping it. So he's going to be a little
- 36:44Speaker 3: more not tentative, but he but he's going to be
- 36:47Speaker 3: a little more deliberate because he has to get a
- 36:50Speaker 3: sense of what a picture's trying to do. He's got
- 36:52Speaker 3: to think more and rip less. Well, he didn't get
- 36:55Speaker 3: the results, but the lessons. He absorbed the lessons and
- 37:00Speaker 3: his plate discipline improved, improved. And I know we said
- 37:03Speaker 3: a couple three weeks I said, like, listen, the results
- 37:06Speaker 3: probably are going to start to come now. And the
- 37:09Speaker 3: results have been coming now. He went through since made
- 37:13Speaker 3: the twenty six up, you know, to the start of
- 37:16Speaker 3: the Chicago series, among players had like forty forty five
- 37:20Speaker 3: played appears, Nolan Gorman was leading them in batting average,
- 37:24Speaker 3: on base percentage, slugging ops and walk rate. Okay, small sample,
- 37:28Speaker 3: but still sign of progress. He's awesome. In the Milwaukee series.
- 37:32Speaker 3: He even hits a three run homer off a lefty
- 37:36Speaker 3: and he laid down that bunt single that that should
- 37:39Speaker 3: have really, you know, won the game for them or
- 37:41Speaker 3: set it up. What was he doing sitting on the
- 37:45Speaker 3: bench the first game of the White Sox series when
- 37:49Speaker 3: they start a right handed pitcher. Why in the world
- 37:51Speaker 3: would he be on the bench in that situation.
- 37:54Speaker 2: Like I would have loved to ask Allie because I
- 37:57Speaker 2: have because.
- 37:58Speaker 3: He's he was the guy has done everything they wanted
- 38:02Speaker 3: him to do, and they told him, you have to
- 38:04Speaker 3: do this. Brtt you got you gotta, but you gotta
- 38:07Speaker 3: move in with Brent Brown. You gotta build throw all
- 38:09Speaker 3: throw throw all this away, and build it back up again.
- 38:12Speaker 3: And then he's starting to do it and the dudes
- 38:14Speaker 3: like hitting bombs off left hand, left handed pitcher and
- 38:17Speaker 3: a big spot right and he's not in the lineup
- 38:21Speaker 3: against her right handed starter like the first game in Chicago.
- 38:24Speaker 3: I was just like, I know, listen, I know Oli
- 38:28Speaker 3: is in a really tough spot. I get it, and
- 38:30Speaker 3: I talked to him about these type of decisions every
- 38:32Speaker 3: Tuesday on KMOX. But that was an example of just
- 38:38Speaker 3: me saying, you know, no, no, that's just not right.
- 38:42Speaker 1: Yeah he should have been I agree, And then you
- 38:46Speaker 1: get to the the butt question, But who are you
- 38:49Speaker 1: sitting Because if you're gonna play Gorman and Donovan, aren't
- 38:51Speaker 1: you sitting Burtleson and Burlison deserves to play just as much?
- 38:55Speaker 1: And then are you gonna sit Walker mister call him
- 38:58Speaker 1: that great nickname. I mean, if you want to play
- 39:00Speaker 1: your best beats. Sure, but that's how many lefties in
- 39:03Speaker 1: the lineup then five? Okay, how easy it is to
- 39:06Speaker 1: game plan against as an opposing manager. Plus, if this
- 39:09Speaker 1: is a runway season walker priority number one and you're
- 39:13Speaker 1: not taking new Bar out, and you shouldn't take Victor
- 39:15Speaker 1: Scott out, they have to adjust and go through the
- 39:17Speaker 1: trials and tribulations as well.
- 39:18Speaker 2: There is no perfect lineup for the say Lois Cardinals
- 39:21Speaker 2: right now.
- 39:22Speaker 1: No matter who's then, you can make the argument that
- 39:24Speaker 1: they need to be there, and whoever's on the bench,
- 39:25Speaker 1: you can make the argument they should be starting.
- 39:27Speaker 3: I do I think. I think at one point in
- 39:31Speaker 3: one of these runway players like Gorman, you know, they
- 39:35Speaker 3: gave him a lot to do, a lot to do
- 39:37Speaker 3: to sort of get his head back and just become
- 39:40Speaker 3: a new type of hitter, and he had some real
- 39:43Speaker 3: momentum going. And I don't I don't care who has
- 39:46Speaker 3: to sit. You don't interrupt his momentum by sitting them
- 39:49Speaker 3: on a bench. Ya, You're so right, you know, you
- 39:53Speaker 3: pull the plug on that sortyway. Now, Am I overreacting
- 39:56Speaker 3: to one decision? Yes? I am, But I was just
- 40:00Speaker 3: like really really excited by what Nolan Gorman was doing.
- 40:05Speaker 3: And by the way, I think he had a double
- 40:07Speaker 3: in this game the second game today. So anyway, no, no,
- 40:10Speaker 3: I get that, and I feel bad for Ali because
- 40:13Speaker 3: he didn't create this roster. He didn't construct it. Oli
- 40:16Speaker 3: dropped a hint on kmo X with us on Tuesday
- 40:19Speaker 3: when I was we were asking about Barreros JC, I
- 40:23Speaker 3: proposed a scenario to him to where he actually could
- 40:26Speaker 3: find some playing time for playing time for the JAC
- 40:29Speaker 3: two or three starts a week, two starts plus off
- 40:31Speaker 3: the bench, and he actually agreed with that. He said, yeah,
- 40:35Speaker 3: there's a way to do. It would mean more rest
- 40:37Speaker 3: for win, more making sure Donovan isn't running to the
- 40:40Speaker 3: ground Ronado, maybe getting more breathers, and he said, yeah,
- 40:44Speaker 3: he could help us during the week in a number
- 40:46Speaker 3: of ways. Yeah. But he made a point of saying,
- 40:49Speaker 3: he said, but that's a front office thing, like they
- 40:52Speaker 3: make the roster decisions, and I don't I got to
- 40:54Speaker 3: talk to him because I don't want to take that
- 40:56Speaker 3: the wrong way that he was just sort of pointing
- 40:59Speaker 3: a finger, But I could I have the feeling that
- 41:02Speaker 3: he would like to have Jace up here. And that
- 41:04Speaker 3: was a comical moment. Actually Tuesday when we asked him
- 41:08Speaker 3: about Barrero and I'm pointed out that he doesn't play,
- 41:10Speaker 3: and Oli said, well, okay, I get it. To Jayce,
- 41:13Speaker 3: he said, but he would he would be replacing a
- 41:17Speaker 3: guy who doesn't play. Right, So what.
- 41:22Speaker 2: We're like, who's not playing?
- 41:25Speaker 3: And I know what he man, I know what he went.
- 41:29Speaker 3: What he meant said, Jaycey's got to play if he's
- 41:31Speaker 3: up here. But fans were like, wait a minute, he
- 41:33Speaker 3: just said, you can't bring you can't bring Jayce up
- 41:38Speaker 3: here to replace a guy who's not playing. And the
- 41:41Speaker 3: fans were going nuts in the comments, They're like, if
- 41:44Speaker 3: he's not playing, Like, well, why is he here?
- 41:48Speaker 2: Let's use some critical thinking skills here.
- 41:50Speaker 3: And I understand what Oli meant. It just came out wrong.
- 41:54Speaker 3: I know what he meant, because you can't have Sa
- 41:56Speaker 3: Jayce up here sitting on the bench all the time.
- 41:59Speaker 3: I like, you can't.
- 42:01Speaker 1: No bo can sit on the bench. That's why he's
- 42:04Speaker 1: the twenty sixth man, right every season? Every season, I
- 42:09Speaker 1: know there is an obsession about the twenty sixth man
- 42:12Speaker 1: and why he is never used and why it's a
- 42:13Speaker 1: waste of space no matter.
- 42:15Speaker 3: Who it is.
- 42:17Speaker 2: And I just want to say.
- 42:19Speaker 1: That is the point of the twenty sixth man, to
- 42:22Speaker 1: have death to fill in a role when needed.
- 42:25Speaker 2: That is the point, Jose Berras.
- 42:27Speaker 1: Jose Berra's role is to cover for Mason win when
- 42:30Speaker 1: needed in a doubleheader like today, and pinch run if
- 42:33Speaker 1: they need him to. Good teams have that as their
- 42:36Speaker 1: twenty sixth man. Now sometimes they have a little bit
- 42:38Speaker 1: better option than the Cardinals have had for the twenty
- 42:41Speaker 1: six mans from an overall skills standpoint. But that's the
- 42:43Speaker 1: whole point of the twenty six man and Thomas and
- 42:45Speaker 1: jac is not going to be here to be a
- 42:47Speaker 1: twenty six man.
- 42:48Speaker 2: That's a disservice to everybody.
- 42:50Speaker 3: I get it from fl Like you said, critical thinking,
- 42:53Speaker 3: I get it.
- 42:54Speaker 2: But how he said it was hilarious, though I did laugh.
- 42:57Speaker 3: It was funny. That was the thing. I wasn't upset,
- 43:00Speaker 3: but yeah, I wasn't like ticked off about it. I
- 43:03Speaker 3: was just kind of like, I can't believe he said that,
- 43:04Speaker 3: because you know, the fans were just going nuts and
- 43:08Speaker 3: he just kind of walked right into that one. But
- 43:10Speaker 3: I get it. I don't want s JC coming up
- 43:12Speaker 3: here and sitting around. But then again, I think the
- 43:14Speaker 3: Jac could probably be used a couple times a week
- 43:17Speaker 3: and come off the bench during games. I do wonder, Katie,
- 43:21Speaker 3: And I don't want to drag this out, and I apologize,
- 43:23Speaker 3: but I do wonder. You know, I can't sit here
- 43:28Speaker 3: and draw up a grid with the schedule. He's the manager.
- 43:30Speaker 3: But I do think Arnatto should get a little more
- 43:33Speaker 3: time off. I know Wind should absolutely and don have
- 43:38Speaker 3: been you know, with the toe, and you don't you know,
- 43:41Speaker 3: I admire him a great deal, but you know, if
- 43:44Speaker 3: something's bothering him, you got to get it taken care of.
- 43:47Speaker 3: You don't run that guy into the ground. See. I
- 43:48Speaker 3: think Ali's got to be careful about that. And see
- 43:51Speaker 3: that's where a j C in theory would fit in
- 43:54Speaker 3: and he would have a role. But I don't know
- 43:56Speaker 3: that Ali's going to back off playing these guys basically
- 43:59Speaker 3: every day.
- 44:00Speaker 2: I'm not sure it feels like he can.
- 44:01Speaker 3: One.
- 44:02Speaker 1: Good luck getting Ronauda to agree to a day off exactly.
- 44:04Speaker 1: Doesn't that two who is who's on the bench is
- 44:09Speaker 1: going to help you? Okay, you take Mason Whin, give
- 44:11Speaker 1: him a day and you start brunding Donovan. Okay, that's fine,
- 44:15Speaker 1: Like it's not your best option at shortstop, but it's
- 44:17Speaker 1: major lely serviceable, and you feel okay there.
- 44:19Speaker 2: You take Donovan out of the.
- 44:20Speaker 1: Game and you play Gorman at second sure for a day,
- 44:24Speaker 1: because the defensive difference is dramatic between Donovan and Gorman
- 44:28Speaker 1: at second base. So he's balancing all he is runway
- 44:31Speaker 1: versus results and putting his best line up out there,
- 44:33Speaker 1: but also try not to bring these guys into the ground.
- 44:36Speaker 1: And I don't know, it's just so so comfortable because
- 44:40Speaker 1: by this section there is no one easy answer that
- 44:43Speaker 1: everyone won't agree to.
- 44:45Speaker 3: And we go back to the beginning because we should
- 44:48Speaker 3: never forget the number one factor in all this. They
- 44:52Speaker 3: tried to trade Aronado. They thought they had to trade.
- 44:55Speaker 3: They were confident they could trade him. They couldn't. He
- 44:59Speaker 3: came back, see if he And by the way, this
- 45:02Speaker 3: isn't me saying boo to Aronado. I love watching this
- 45:06Speaker 3: guy play like today, watching this doubleheader. He's making plays
- 45:09Speaker 3: left and right. I mean, he's his defense is so
- 45:12Speaker 3: entertaining and and and he's actually been hitting pretty well lately.
- 45:16Speaker 3: But when they couldn't trade Aronado, it clogged everything up
- 45:21Speaker 3: because if Ironado had been traded, Gorman would be playing
- 45:23Speaker 3: a lot more so JC would be up here. We
- 45:26Speaker 3: could take it right on down the line with some
- 45:27Speaker 3: of these other some of these other players, but with
- 45:30Speaker 3: him still at third, it just sort of, like I said,
- 45:35Speaker 3: it kind of clogged clogs up the drain, right, you
- 45:38Speaker 3: don't have that flow. So what are you going to do? Though?
- 45:42Speaker 3: And you know, gosh, I'm so tired of reading stories
- 45:44Speaker 3: not written locally. That's just you know, everyone's got Aronaudo.
- 45:51Speaker 3: Oh here's a trade. Oh, here's what, and they always
- 45:55Speaker 3: leave out little things like, oh oh yeah, he's got
- 45:59Speaker 3: a no trade clause. Oh oh yeah, he's owed about
- 46:02Speaker 3: fifty five million, fifty million if you'd subtract the Rockies money.
- 46:08Speaker 3: Maybe the other team doesn't want to pick up off
- 46:10Speaker 3: fifty million of that, maybe because they say we'll take
- 46:12Speaker 3: his defense, but not a fifty million. But everybody, I'm
- 46:15Speaker 3: just so tired of our profession. Sometimes here I'm being
- 46:18Speaker 3: the grumpy old man. That's okay, where it's kind of like,
- 46:21Speaker 3: you know what, just stop writing stuff about where you're
- 46:25Speaker 3: matchmaking Aaronato with like five teams.
- 46:28Speaker 2: You think it's nothing from this offseason. It's not that
- 46:30Speaker 2: easy exactly.
- 46:31Speaker 3: It's just And what bothers me about it is that
- 46:35Speaker 3: there are fans who read this stuff and they think, oh, yeah, see,
- 46:40Speaker 3: they could trade him to Philadelphia. See, they could trade
- 46:42Speaker 3: him to the Dodgers. See, like it's easy. It's actually
- 46:45Speaker 3: incredibly complex and it ain't going to happen. You think
- 46:48Speaker 3: Bill DeWitt wants to pay off half of what they
- 46:50Speaker 3: own to make a deal like that. I don't.
- 46:53Speaker 2: The whole reason they wanted to trade him was to
- 46:55Speaker 2: offload the salary, as.
- 46:56Speaker 3: We know, and he's a beloved cardinal. Now he really
- 46:59Speaker 3: is the too. And oh that's the other thing. If
- 47:03Speaker 3: you're still in contention, you think John Mozilac is going
- 47:06Speaker 3: to cut this team's hard up by trading Nolan Aernano. No, Katy,
- 47:12Speaker 3: you could you become the sports media zar and just
- 47:15Speaker 3: put an end to all this stuff?
- 47:17Speaker 2: Uh No?
- 47:17Speaker 1: Because no, I guess I have tried, but no one
- 47:21Speaker 1: cares because it's much easier to write about hypotheticals and
- 47:24Speaker 1: speculation because the truth is boring.
- 47:26Speaker 3: So but I'm sorry about my rant.
- 47:28Speaker 2: So that's okay, I mean you have to do.
- 47:30Speaker 1: I need we needed the rant because our beloved listeners
- 47:33Speaker 1: haven't had one in a couple of weeks, so we'll
- 47:35Speaker 1: be better about that.
- 47:36Speaker 2: We got them, wed them a long episode too, so
- 47:38Speaker 2: that I.
- 47:38Speaker 3: Know that's my fault.
- 47:39Speaker 2: No, I liked it because it was fine. It was
- 47:42Speaker 2: our l to talk about. We'll up with one more.
- 47:45Speaker 2: We'll bring this one back, Okay, play the kids for
- 47:48Speaker 2: Michael McGreevey.
- 47:49Speaker 1: A big showdown Over the next week in the Nlcentral
- 47:52Speaker 1: at Bush Stadium.
- 47:53Speaker 2: Burnett will be back to recap Cardinals Reds. Disclaimer.
- 47:57Speaker 1: I'm only going to be there for Friday's game, but
- 47:58Speaker 1: I will be watching from home Saturday and Sunday.
- 48:00Speaker 2: I got some weird scheduling going on this week, so
- 48:03Speaker 2: hopefully we are recapping another series win. Good for Oh
- 48:06Speaker 2: Michael Graves out of this game, Riley.
- 48:08Speaker 3: Yeah, five innings, three hits, one solo homer, one run,
- 48:12Speaker 3: one walk, five strikeouts.
- 48:14Speaker 2: What was the pitch count?
- 48:16Speaker 3: Hold on one second? Seventy five?
- 48:19Speaker 2: All right, just give him fresh, but that's possible.
- 48:21Speaker 3: Get him out of here. You got to get him
- 48:24Speaker 3: out of here, Bertie.
- 48:25Speaker 2: We have. We have finished up another episode of Cardinal Terror.
- 48:29Speaker 1: As always, this was super fun and we'll get back
- 48:31Speaker 1: to you guys all on Sunday and yeah, talk soon
- 48:35Speaker 1: Thanks Bertie, take care,
