- 0:01Speaker 1: Ft live postgame show ALCS Game one in the Books
- 0:06Speaker 1: presented by box one, the new streaming app where you
- 0:09Speaker 1: could watch the entire ALCS Scottie Brown along with Eric Kratz.
- 0:13Speaker 1: He's dancing and so are Mariners fans. There happened a weekend. Man, Hey,
- 0:18Speaker 1: you got to be in it. You got to be
- 0:19Speaker 1: here for the marathon to watch them win and walk
- 0:22Speaker 1: off fashion in fifteen innings and then tired with a
- 0:25Speaker 1: lot of exhausted arms, moving their way up to Toronto
- 0:30Speaker 1: and winning a three to one ball game in very
- 0:32Speaker 1: Mariners fashion. Pitching was fantastic, low scoring game, and Kratz
- 0:37Speaker 1: I thought, as many others did, that the Blue Jays
- 0:39Speaker 1: were going to look just like they did in the
- 0:41Speaker 1: last round. And they did for one inning.
- 0:45Speaker 2: Maybe for one pitch. For what the first pitch of
- 0:48Speaker 2: the game, which Bryce Miller throws seventy three out of
- 0:52Speaker 2: his seventy three starts, he throws a speedball like the
- 0:56Speaker 2: Blue Jays came out and I was like, oh, man,
- 0:59Speaker 2: like theroners are riding high. You went across the border
- 1:03Speaker 2: and George Springer said, welcome to the six Boys. And
- 1:07Speaker 2: then Nathan Lucas has a I want to say eleven
- 1:10Speaker 2: pitch at bat. Essentially, Bryce Miller was sitting there with
- 1:13Speaker 2: thirteen pitches, a runner on first and losing one and
- 1:18Speaker 2: nothing with the greatest hitter on the planet from the
- 1:21Speaker 2: last postseason, last season, last series, and that was it.
- 1:25Speaker 2: That's all the Blue Jays got.
- 1:28Speaker 1: What happened, Kratz is you know I always like to
- 1:30Speaker 1: ask the question, is this a Mariner's staff that is
- 1:34Speaker 1: just so supreme and someone was able to figure out
- 1:38Speaker 1: how to keep this Blue Jays offense pretty quiet here
- 1:40Speaker 1: in the postseason? Or did the Blue Jays bats look
- 1:44Speaker 1: a little bit off compared to what you saw in
- 1:48Speaker 1: the DS.
- 1:49Speaker 2: I mean compared to what we saw. Yes, but let's
- 1:51Speaker 2: go to let's go to what we saw in the
- 1:55Speaker 2: last game against Cam Schlitler, where the Blue Jays were like, okay,
- 1:59Speaker 2: there go in there. They're like, hey, we're gonna not
- 2:02Speaker 2: strike out, and you kind of give the other pitcher
- 2:07Speaker 2: an opportunity to stay in the game. While Cam Schlitzler
- 2:10Speaker 2: didn't get a million punch outs like he did against
- 2:13Speaker 2: the Red Sox, he stayed in the game and he
- 2:16Speaker 2: did well. Tonight they were facing the Blue Jays were
- 2:19Speaker 2: facing Bryce Miller, on short rest with the bullpen, and
- 2:25Speaker 2: every one of their starters absolutely gassed. So if I'm
- 2:29Speaker 2: the Blue Jays, now, this is not what you think
- 2:31Speaker 2: as a hitter. You think, Okay, I'm gonna go in
- 2:33Speaker 2: and I'm gonna smash Bryce Miller, because we have a
- 2:36Speaker 2: history of being able to have success against a guy
- 2:38Speaker 2: like this. He's not gonna strike us out. We're gonna
- 2:41Speaker 2: drive the ball. But what happened was they let him
- 2:44Speaker 2: in the game. They let him stay around and help
- 2:47Speaker 2: his team on short rest get through six innings and
- 2:51Speaker 2: seventy some pitches. This may be a downfall because it
- 2:56Speaker 2: was tonight of a team that doesn't strike out much,
- 3:00Speaker 2: team that says, okay, we're not going to strike out.
- 3:03Speaker 2: It doesn't mean they're gonna have long at bats, especially
- 3:05Speaker 2: when you think about the fact that Lucas had a
- 3:08Speaker 2: eleven or twelve pitch at bat. The rest of the
- 3:11Speaker 2: guys he had eighteen ounts on under seventy pitches whatever
- 3:17Speaker 2: that number is. Eighteen outs under seventy seventy one pitches
- 3:20Speaker 2: is crazy, And the fact that the Blue Jays came
- 3:23Speaker 2: out and only got two hits, I chalk it up
- 3:27Speaker 2: as a night off because I think this Blue Jays
- 3:29Speaker 2: lineup is better than that. But it's a prime case
- 3:31Speaker 2: that Bryce Miller came in on short rest and they
- 3:34Speaker 2: did not grind out these at bats that you would
- 3:36Speaker 2: normally see a team that hits a ton of dangers
- 3:40Speaker 2: maybe grind out more at bats. Yeah, they're going to
- 3:42Speaker 2: strike out six to eight times, but they're going to
- 3:46Speaker 2: grind these at bats and make a belieguered. Pitching staff
- 3:51Speaker 2: pushed through this game and they really didn't.
- 3:54Speaker 1: So I'm with you for this game. You'd love to
- 3:57Speaker 1: write up a pitch count, get a starter knocked, and
- 4:00Speaker 1: really make the bullpen work. Coming off the marathon game
- 4:04Speaker 1: five in this series as a whole, do you think
- 4:07Speaker 1: it will matter because of what the Mariners have in
- 4:10Speaker 1: their bullpen. They have solid starting pitching. So if you
- 4:13Speaker 1: can get to them and crack them at any point,
- 4:14Speaker 1: you crack them right. You don't worry too much about
- 4:17Speaker 1: working deep counts that that's not part of your game.
- 4:19Speaker 1: For some Jays it is for others. They love to
- 4:21Speaker 1: attack early. But it's not like you're like, Oh, I
- 4:24Speaker 1: can't wait to get to the Mariners bullpen. They've had
- 4:28Speaker 1: a really strong bullpen throughout the season, and yeah, there's
- 4:30Speaker 1: been some ups and downs. Spire's really good. He's had
- 4:33Speaker 1: a few blips in the postseason, but the stuff is
- 4:35Speaker 1: there for a lot of these guys. Munos obviously got
- 4:38Speaker 1: the job done for five seconds. They'll use him as
- 4:41Speaker 1: much as possible. Brash is great, So is it really
- 4:45Speaker 1: worth riding up pitch counts in a spot like this?
- 4:48Speaker 1: In a series like this, I should say to get
- 4:50Speaker 1: to the bullpen when the bullpen looks like it's really rolling.
- 4:55Speaker 2: The bullpen does look like it's really rolling, But who
- 4:57Speaker 2: is the bullpen rolling against? The bullpen was rolling against
- 5:02Speaker 2: the Tigers. The Tigers offense was They were not it.
- 5:06Speaker 2: They were not it from the second half on. They
- 5:08Speaker 2: were not into the playoffs. And the fact that the
- 5:11Speaker 2: Mariners took it to the fifteenth inning of Game five
- 5:16Speaker 2: is a telling sign that maybe the Mariners offense isn't it.
- 5:22Speaker 2: But this bullpen did everything they needed to do. And
- 5:26Speaker 2: you can question, are they a bullpen that needed to
- 5:31Speaker 2: shut down the Tigers? Yes, and they did, Like you can't.
- 5:36Speaker 2: You can't say, oh, I don't know. The Tigers were terrible,
- 5:38Speaker 2: So we'll really see what the Mariners bullpen does. You
- 5:43Speaker 2: can only get out the guys that are in front
- 5:44Speaker 2: of you, and the guys that were in front of you,
- 5:46Speaker 2: they did it. I don't know that the Tigers would
- 5:48Speaker 2: have ever scored in that game, Like we went through
- 5:51Speaker 2: a lot of game essentially they had that they had
- 5:54Speaker 2: late in Game four, they late, they scored there and
- 6:00Speaker 2: other than that, they really kept that Tigers team down.
- 6:04Speaker 2: They spun a lot of balls, they weren't able to
- 6:06Speaker 2: hit breaking balls. So to me, if they are able
- 6:10Speaker 2: to beat the Blue Jays, that's where it is. That's
- 6:13Speaker 2: where the Mariners. That's where the Mariners superpower is. Besides
- 6:17Speaker 2: cal Rawley, who hit another dinger tonight. To me, this
- 6:20Speaker 2: superpower is exactly why the last two years we've set
- 6:24Speaker 2: here on our show, and I think a lot of
- 6:26Speaker 2: people in baseball have said, don't let the Mariners get
- 6:29Speaker 2: into the postseason. Why because they have a bunch of
- 6:32Speaker 2: starting rotation that can then give the ball over to
- 6:37Speaker 2: this like this combination of spire brash munios. I mean,
- 6:43Speaker 2: you're talking about guys like Bizarda who's not even getting Brasabon,
- 6:47Speaker 2: who's not even getting a lot of do because he
- 6:49Speaker 2: got hurt by Hovey Baiaz. I think he had like
- 6:52Speaker 2: a two six this season.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Yeah, no, you got it right the first time Biar
- 7:00Speaker 1: in Mexico right now with the Mets sipping cocktails, had
- 7:04Speaker 1: time to do it, to do it, yes, But for
- 7:07Speaker 1: the Mariners, we've seen this game in Seattle a million times,
- 7:12Speaker 1: a million times over the past few years, right we have.
- 7:15Speaker 1: We've seen great starting pitching from Bryce Miller, who had
- 7:18Speaker 1: a rough year until he figured it out with the
- 7:21Speaker 1: pitch chipping and then timely hitting and oh cal Rally.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Should we mention cal Rally and Jogte Polanco?
- 7:27Speaker 2: You can't. You can't bet. I'm not going to say
- 7:29Speaker 2: it about four Hippolonco, but you can't bet against Cal Rawley.
- 7:33Speaker 2: What are we like, what are we saying if we're saying, okay,
- 7:38Speaker 2: you know, I just don't think Cal's going to have
- 7:40Speaker 2: enough for this team. Like he comes through. He's been
- 7:43Speaker 2: striking out a little bit here in the postseason, but
- 7:46Speaker 2: he's also been lace in some line drives, doubles, big hits.
- 7:50Speaker 2: When you're like it seems like this offense is is down,
- 7:54Speaker 2: He's not going to be able to do it. Whack
- 7:56Speaker 2: danger Like, if you're betting against Cal Rawley. It feels
- 7:59Speaker 2: like this is the year of cal and if they
- 8:03Speaker 2: move on to the World Series, he's gonna have more
- 8:05Speaker 2: big moments just like this solo homer. And if you
- 8:08Speaker 2: go back and look at the numbers that he's had
- 8:10Speaker 2: against the Blue Jays, he is a Blue Jay killer.
- 8:14Speaker 2: At home and in Toronto, they do not want to
- 8:17Speaker 2: see him.
- 8:19Speaker 1: And yes, quick side note for those in the chat
- 8:22Speaker 1: are watching later on, my pupp was pissed that we're
- 8:25Speaker 1: doing a show at eleven o'clock Eastern time instead of
- 8:28Speaker 1: one to three Eastern time, totally screwing up the schedule.
- 8:31Speaker 1: In the agenda, Bella is behaving beautifully right now in
- 8:34Speaker 1: the crat's household. But it is what it is. I mean,
- 8:39Speaker 1: is there a more clutch hitter in the postseason right
- 8:41Speaker 1: now than jorgeye Blanca.
- 8:42Speaker 2: There's not.
- 8:43Speaker 1: He's been ridiculous and yeah, go ahead.
- 8:46Speaker 2: No, no, they can't be. You're talking about three. Three
- 8:50Speaker 2: of his last five at bats have either walked it off,
- 8:56Speaker 2: put them ahead, or extended a lead after the seventh
- 9:01Speaker 2: like he's doing it from both sides of the plate
- 9:04Speaker 2: and he's like clutch, but it's just it's it's clutch.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Right now for Jorge Polanco, and I don't think he's
- 9:12Speaker 2: blinked the entire postseason. He's just like.
- 9:18Speaker 1: I think he's blinked the entire season. Cratzy the worst
- 9:22Speaker 1: season of his career last year. He's been a really
- 9:24Speaker 1: solid player in our game for a while now, nice
- 9:27Speaker 1: switch hitter to have. And we were one of the
- 9:30Speaker 1: shows that questioned what the Mariners did in the offseason.
- 9:34Speaker 1: We're like, planco, that's it, You're bringing him back. And
- 9:36Speaker 1: he had a rough year, Okay, what else. Obviously they
- 9:39Speaker 1: patched things up at the trade deadline and it's been
- 9:43Speaker 1: a significantly different looking team this year. That plus cal
- 9:47Speaker 1: Riley basically doubling the production that we usually see from him,
- 9:50Speaker 1: if not more. But for Polanco Kratz, I mean, he
- 9:53Speaker 1: completely turned it around this year and now he's had
- 9:56Speaker 1: I don't know if it's his best, if not one
- 9:58Speaker 1: of his best seasons of his career, and he's kind
- 10:00Speaker 1: it right into the playoffs as a really nice role
- 10:04Speaker 1: player for the Mariners all year long and blossoming into
- 10:07Speaker 1: a clutch star for them at the moment. Back to
- 10:11Speaker 1: cal just because this game looked like first inning springer
- 10:14Speaker 1: dinger Toronto's gonna get going. They were causing trouble in
- 10:19Speaker 1: that first inning, right ye had the twelve pitch Nathan
- 10:21Speaker 1: Lucas walk after that, and hopefully he's okay. We'll find
- 10:24Speaker 1: out if there is any updates on him. He left
- 10:26Speaker 1: early in the game with the knee issue. Filed the
- 10:28Speaker 1: pitch off his knee that looked pretty gnarly, looked pretty flush.
- 10:32Speaker 1: But anyway, so we go to finally the sixth inning
- 10:36Speaker 1: where there's action here. Like Kratz mentioned too, out to
- 10:39Speaker 1: strike Homer fourth, one off, Kevin Gossman. We're all talking
- 10:42Speaker 1: about splitters to four out of the five pitches in
- 10:45Speaker 1: that at bat were splitters, and can anybody hit the
- 10:47Speaker 1: splitters of the Toronto Blue Jays. The Yankees certainly couldn't.
- 10:50Speaker 1: They couldn't touch the splitters of the Toronto Blue Jays.
- 10:52Speaker 1: And during the broadcast they talked about how the Mariners
- 10:56Speaker 1: did not ranks particularly well against splitters, and then what
- 10:59Speaker 1: is cal right do. Of course, smashes a splitter for
- 11:02Speaker 1: a home run, and it's a Kevin Gossman splitter too.
- 11:05Speaker 1: It's one of the best in the base. So I
- 11:07Speaker 1: want to talk about this, but I also want to
- 11:09Speaker 1: make sure that we include who's going to pitch in
- 11:12Speaker 1: Game two, And I wonder if the Mariners are a
- 11:16Speaker 1: team that's going to be able to handle one or
- 11:18Speaker 1: two of those and try and create another scenario like
- 11:21Speaker 1: they did in Game one, where they do just enough
- 11:24Speaker 1: they're able to get a homer or two off of
- 11:26Speaker 1: Trey Savage and completely turn this series in their favor
- 11:30Speaker 1: heading to Seattle, do you think that this team can
- 11:33Speaker 1: handle pitches like that differently than what we saw last
- 11:36Speaker 1: round with the Yankees and their approach against that pitch.
- 11:41Speaker 2: That pitch like that, like what he the uniqueness of it,
- 11:45Speaker 2: the fact that it looks unlike any other pitch kind
- 11:50Speaker 2: of starts to lose a sheen and shine every single
- 11:55Speaker 2: at that, every single outing in the big leagues, because
- 12:00Speaker 2: somebody from the somebody from the Mariners is going to
- 12:04Speaker 2: go and talk to somebody from the Yankees say, what
- 12:07Speaker 2: do you see? I mean, if you if you delve
- 12:10Speaker 2: into tray, you Savage. If you delve into tray you
- 12:12Speaker 2: Savage is like why his pitches are unique? Then pitchers
- 12:18Speaker 2: can start to, like our hitters can start to formulate
- 12:21Speaker 2: how they're gonna approach it when they see that slider spin. Technically,
- 12:25Speaker 2: that thing it backs up, it doesn't go away from
- 12:28Speaker 2: a right hander, so guys are gonna have to like
- 12:30Speaker 2: start swinging in that direction. The Yankees, unfortunately, were a
- 12:35Speaker 2: kind of a guinea pig against Trey you Savage. They
- 12:37Speaker 2: hadn't seen him, they hadn't seen much. So can they
- 12:41Speaker 2: do it? Yes, they can do it. Does the Mariners
- 12:44Speaker 2: pitching staff have to show up and you know, essentially
- 12:48Speaker 2: throw up zeros or ones? Yes, his, I mean historically
- 12:52Speaker 2: or so far in this in this postseason, that's what
- 12:56Speaker 2: they've had to do. But that Kevin Gosman splitter, I know,
- 12:59Speaker 2: I'm kind of jump around. We were talking about the
- 13:01Speaker 2: Kevin Gosman splitter there. It is one of the best
- 13:03Speaker 2: in the game. But if you watched Cow's other at bats,
- 13:06Speaker 2: he made a very concerted effort to do something that
- 13:10Speaker 2: was kind of unlike other guys in the lineup that
- 13:13Speaker 2: we're doing, where they were like, okay, the ball down,
- 13:17Speaker 2: I'm taking it. I'm taking the ball down. It almost
- 13:19Speaker 2: looked like Cal said, I'm going to swing at the
- 13:22Speaker 2: ball down, but I'm going to catch it so far
- 13:25Speaker 2: out in front that my only choice is to be
- 13:28Speaker 2: able to hit a dinger because you saw some swings late.
- 13:33Speaker 2: I think it was later in his next step bat,
- 13:35Speaker 2: or maybe it was one of his strikeouts. And you
- 13:38Speaker 2: don't get those kind of swings unless your approach is, hey,
- 13:41Speaker 2: you know what, I'm going to catch that ball as
- 13:44Speaker 2: far out in front as I can. And I know
- 13:48Speaker 2: I'm going to chase balls that are going to bounce,
- 13:50Speaker 2: but I don't think he's going to bounce it so
- 13:53Speaker 2: far out in front that I'm not going to be
- 13:54Speaker 2: able to clip it. And when you catch balls out
- 13:56Speaker 2: in front, that's when you're going to do damage. And
- 13:58Speaker 2: I think that's what he's done all year. Cal hasn't
- 14:02Speaker 2: hit four seen fastballs very well. He's hit those off
- 14:05Speaker 2: speed pitches that are down, and it looked like that
- 14:09Speaker 2: was his concerted effort against effort against Gosman.
- 14:13Speaker 1: A couple other things about Cal that stood out to me.
- 14:15Speaker 1: One Tom Verducci, who is a very smart brain in
- 14:19Speaker 1: our sports, that he hasn't seen a catcher command a
- 14:22Speaker 1: game like this since Yati Molina. That is super high praise.
- 14:28Speaker 1: We don't have to get into a whole MVP debate
- 14:30Speaker 1: right now between him and Judge. Let's focus on the postseason,
- 14:33Speaker 1: but just the value that Cal is providing. Right, It's
- 14:37Speaker 1: a position cratz where many teams don't expect a ton
- 14:41Speaker 1: of offense. They just want a guy that is an
- 14:43Speaker 1: absolute stud handling a pitching staff, blocking baseballs, calling pitches,
- 14:48Speaker 1: catching runners, if possible, the whole deal, right. I mean,
- 14:51Speaker 1: Cayl Riley is looking like one of the best catchers
- 14:54Speaker 1: we've seen in a really long time. And hey, if
- 14:58Speaker 1: he's getting YACHTI praise. That's incredible. But also it's a
- 15:02Speaker 1: much better hitter than Yadi in terms of impacting me.
- 15:06Speaker 1: He's the best spat it definitely the most dangerous spat
- 15:10Speaker 1: on the team. So I thought that part was special.
- 15:12Speaker 1: If you want to comment, then I got one other
- 15:14Speaker 1: about Cal.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Huge huge winning teams need a winning catcher. Show me
- 15:20Speaker 2: a team in the playoffs, especially the later you get
- 15:24Speaker 2: into the playoffs that doesn't have a winning catcher, and
- 15:28Speaker 2: people will say, well, that's just cherry picking. That's an
- 15:30Speaker 2: easy thing to say. Guys that catch no hitters, guys
- 15:34Speaker 2: that control of pitching staff really well, know how to
- 15:38Speaker 2: help them get through a start on short rest, like
- 15:43Speaker 2: you did tonight. Like those are the things that you
- 15:45Speaker 2: kind of you build that rapport and you get kind
- 15:48Speaker 2: of a idea of what kind of a catcher this
- 15:51Speaker 2: guy is. You can't you can't put a stat on it.
- 15:53Speaker 2: The only stat you can put on it is the
- 15:55Speaker 2: W at the end of the day. And cal Raley
- 15:59Speaker 2: is clearly is clearly running this staff, and he clearly
- 16:04Speaker 2: has their has their ear, but he's also helping them
- 16:07Speaker 2: get through tougher times here in this postseason. And if
- 16:11Speaker 2: they're gonna do anything, like I said at the beginning,
- 16:14Speaker 2: this is the year of Cal. It's not just about
- 16:16Speaker 2: him hitting dingers behind a dish. What can he do?
- 16:20Speaker 2: How can he control? How can he help these guys?
- 16:22Speaker 2: Now they're exhausted, but you know what, you got to
- 16:26Speaker 2: get them through. You gotta be able to read what
- 16:27Speaker 2: they have in that moment that night you're talking to
- 16:30Speaker 2: the pitching coach, the manager, you know what. He gets
- 16:35Speaker 2: as much credit as Bryce Miller gets here.
- 16:38Speaker 1: And many catchers fade either in the second half or
- 16:41Speaker 1: definitely in the postseason. Did Cal have as good of
- 16:44Speaker 1: a second half as the first half. I think the
- 16:46Speaker 1: first half numbers were better, but his second half was
- 16:49Speaker 1: still very, very good. And look at what he's doing
- 16:52Speaker 1: in the postseason. It's so impressive. And he's coming off
- 16:55Speaker 1: catching fifteen innings. You got fifteen innings two nights ago.
- 16:58Speaker 1: He's a beast. Durability matters.
- 17:02Speaker 2: And he flew from Seattle to Toronto. Toronto was sitting
- 17:07Speaker 2: like this. They were like, we had Jeff Hoffman on
- 17:10Speaker 2: on Friday, and he was like, it's so nice to
- 17:12Speaker 2: be watching these games. Cow just played a fifteen inning game,
- 17:18Speaker 2: just caught all fifteen innings, got a little got a
- 17:22Speaker 2: little booze, got on a flight, flew out to Toronto.
- 17:26Speaker 2: Like this is why the end of October, when you
- 17:28Speaker 2: play all the way through October, you're exhausted. Nobody is
- 17:32Speaker 2: gonna need rest more than him. But he doesn't need
- 17:35Speaker 2: rest right now. Sorry. Whatever you get from him offensively
- 17:39Speaker 2: is a bonus, and he is just cashing in these
- 17:42Speaker 2: bonuses every it seems like night in and night out.
- 17:47Speaker 1: Oh yeah, and Mariners fans obviously love him to death.
- 17:49Speaker 1: They're gonna have him for a very long time. I mean,
- 17:52Speaker 1: he signed an extension with Seattle. What was that was
- 17:56Speaker 1: that this year? Last year? Now I'm forgetting.
- 17:59Speaker 2: It's great that you brought that up. How much does
- 18:02Speaker 2: an extension do for a player. People will say, well,
- 18:05Speaker 2: you know, sometimes there's pressure on players and all this stuff,
- 18:09Speaker 2: or some players they get complacent. He signed that extension
- 18:13Speaker 2: this year. Do you think cal Raley is sitting here going,
- 18:18Speaker 2: I need to prove this extension. Maybe is he sitting
- 18:22Speaker 2: there going, Man, I wonder if I can play through
- 18:24Speaker 2: this injury. He's sitting there going, you know what, I
- 18:27Speaker 2: have this money locked up. What I'm going to focus
- 18:30Speaker 2: on now is just playing this game, is just playing
- 18:33Speaker 2: to win. And I think honestly too, and maybe I'm
- 18:37Speaker 2: overstepping what an extension for a premium talent in the
- 18:42Speaker 2: game does for an organization. How many other years did
- 18:46Speaker 2: they go all in to get offense at the trade deadline,
- 18:49Speaker 2: even offense in the offseason they signed them to an extension,
- 18:52Speaker 2: and all of a sudden, they're like, hey, you know what,
- 18:54Speaker 2: we're kind of in striking distance. They might have had
- 18:57Speaker 2: a better team last year and he did nothing. This year.
- 19:00Speaker 2: They were in striking distance. They had cal lopped up.
- 19:02Speaker 2: You know what we're going to do. We're pushing our
- 19:04Speaker 2: chips all in. So good for Jerry Depoto and good
- 19:07Speaker 2: for an ownership that I've been and we've been very
- 19:10Speaker 2: critical on for pushing, for pushing all in, going to
- 19:16Speaker 2: get au Hennio to add to this lineup, going to
- 19:18Speaker 2: get Josh Nailer to add to this lineup, which is
- 19:21Speaker 2: what they needed.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Yes, it is exactly. Yeah, we have been critical and
- 19:25Speaker 1: Mariners fans are seeing what this pitching staff is capable
- 19:28Speaker 1: of doing in the playoffs if they had enough offense.
- 19:30Speaker 1: Now they have enough offense to make this a problem.
- 19:33Speaker 1: A couple other quick cal notes and then we'll move
- 19:35Speaker 1: on to Game two. What is it now? Nine home
- 19:39Speaker 1: runs in fourteen games in his career in Toronto. That's
- 19:41Speaker 1: really good. Four home runs against Cosman. I mentioned they
- 19:44Speaker 1: were really on the money in the broadcast describing everything
- 19:46Speaker 1: and one more component that really makes the full season
- 19:50Speaker 1: or the season full circle for me. The very beginning
- 19:54Speaker 1: of our season, the story that dominated the sport for
- 19:58Speaker 1: a week was the torpedo back. The Yankees had these
- 20:02Speaker 1: torpedo bats unfair. Now everyone's getting them. Oh it's gonna
- 20:05Speaker 1: change the sport. Offense is going to go up a ton.
- 20:07Speaker 1: It didn't work out. Most of those got thrown out, right,
- 20:11Speaker 1: you actually pull nominators are using them. A lot of
- 20:13Speaker 1: them will throw them out and say, yeah, I tried
- 20:15Speaker 1: it for a little bit, wasn't for me. Cal Raley, Yes,
- 20:18Speaker 1: is a torpedo bat. Cayl Rally is the poster point
- 20:22Speaker 1: for that bat. It's what a lot of people thought
- 20:25Speaker 1: everyone's numbers were going to turn into. They're like, this
- 20:27Speaker 1: isn't fair. This thing's so different. Everybody's gonna have inflated numbers.
- 20:30Speaker 2: Not just cal Rally, just cal Raley and ultimately, like
- 20:34Speaker 2: we covered this so much, torpedo bat. There's even variations
- 20:38Speaker 2: of the torpedo bat. Cal Rally's is a little bit
- 20:42Speaker 2: different than Austin Wells with the Yankees. Austin Wells looks
- 20:48Speaker 2: like a bowling pin, like it's such a pronounced smaller
- 20:51Speaker 2: cup which is the end of the bat, and Cow's
- 20:54Speaker 2: is a little bit more less demonstrative. It's just the
- 21:00Speaker 2: it's just the feel of a bat. But man, the
- 21:03Speaker 2: torpedo he doesn't need another he doesn't need another nickname.
- 21:07Speaker 2: So let's just stick with big Dumper. Don't try to
- 21:10Speaker 2: add like a torpedo to the Big Dumper or anything
- 21:13Speaker 2: like that. But I don't care what you call it.
- 21:16Speaker 2: That thing's a freaking bomb bat because.
- 21:17Speaker 1: He's right, bombs that's right. Well, we'll see if it continues.
- 21:22Speaker 1: So let's finish by talking about game two of this
- 21:24Speaker 1: series that remains in Toronto. First off, we did get
- 21:28Speaker 1: worried about Nathan Lucas. It's not a fracture, so he's
- 21:31Speaker 1: going to try and play through it if he's feeling
- 21:34Speaker 1: good tomorrow. That was a tough one off the knee.
- 21:36Speaker 1: Do you know what it brought memories of for me?
- 21:39Speaker 1: And why I'm so concerned Christian Yellwich fractured kneecap. So
- 21:43Speaker 1: it sounds like that's not the case. That's great news.
- 21:47Speaker 1: He's pretty damn good and important. All these scrappy quote
- 21:51Speaker 1: no namers in our game, Lucas is one of them. Barger,
- 21:56Speaker 1: Ernie Clement, David Schneider. Right, the role players Toronto has
- 22:01Speaker 1: is what makes them special and complete, and Nathan Lucas
- 22:04Speaker 1: is a big part of that.
- 22:06Speaker 2: Yeah, because you play twenty six guys. This team plays
- 22:08Speaker 2: twenty six guys. Ernie Clement will lead off. If the Mariners,
- 22:13Speaker 2: you know when they faced lefties, Ernie Clement will hit
- 22:16Speaker 2: second in front of Vladimir Guerrero or David Schneider will
- 22:19Speaker 2: hit second. Like this lineup like really changes in morphs,
- 22:25Speaker 2: and when one of those guys is out, that's really
- 22:28Speaker 2: tough to put someone else in a situation for an
- 22:31Speaker 2: entire nine innings and entire seven innings that they're not
- 22:34Speaker 2: used to being in those spots.
- 22:39Speaker 1: Do we think it's not announced yet? But do we
- 22:41Speaker 1: think Luis Castillo starts game two here trade Savage is
- 22:46Speaker 1: already announced? I feel like based off what they have
- 22:49Speaker 1: to work with, Castillo only went fifteen pitches in the
- 22:53Speaker 1: epic game five inning in a third. I mean, Gilbert's
- 22:57Speaker 1: not pitching yet, and George Kirby obviously isn't pitching yet,
- 23:04Speaker 1: So it's got to be Castillo, right. They haven't announced it.
- 23:07Speaker 1: I guess they could announce a bullpen game, but I'm
- 23:10Speaker 1: imagining Castillo is going to go against a Savage here.
- 23:13Speaker 2: Has to I don't see how he doesn't. I think
- 23:17Speaker 2: they had not only I guess you can never think
- 23:21Speaker 2: of this game when you're in that game five or alds,
- 23:26Speaker 2: but you have to think like that's his bullpen day.
- 23:30Speaker 2: So in that bullpen day, some guys don't throw more
- 23:33Speaker 2: than twenty pitches, so for them to keep him under
- 23:36Speaker 2: that twenty even I thought, I thought that day I
- 23:38Speaker 2: thought he could go thirty. I thought you'd be pushing
- 23:42Speaker 2: him to thirty, because if you throw a twenty five
- 23:46Speaker 2: pitch bullpen, then you know, twenty five pitches in the
- 23:50Speaker 2: game is really pushing it. But maybe that thirty mark fifteen,
- 23:54Speaker 2: I feel like, maybe he can give you seventy five pitches.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Maybe he can give you seventy pitches. I never felt
- 23:59Speaker 2: like Luis Castillo in the last two years. They've really
- 24:03Speaker 2: pushed him super long anyway, So it's gonna come down
- 24:08Speaker 2: to the bullpen. It's gonna come down unless the Mariners
- 24:11Speaker 2: find a way to say, hey, you know what, we're
- 24:13Speaker 2: gonna score five runs. Like the Mariners aren't built for
- 24:18Speaker 2: like a ton of like somebody just eating a ton
- 24:21Speaker 2: of innings out of their bullpen. So this next game,
- 24:23Speaker 2: I'm not saying they kick it down the road, but
- 24:27Speaker 2: if they can push through, they fly home, they're back
- 24:30Speaker 2: in their time zone, and then they have a day off.
- 24:34Speaker 2: No team needs a day off more than this pitching
- 24:36Speaker 2: staff does, and I think Luis Castillo can give them,
- 24:40Speaker 2: can give them this huge break that they need. But
- 24:45Speaker 2: they're going up against Trey Savage and I don't think
- 24:47Speaker 2: anybody has has the answers yet to get after him.
- 24:53Speaker 1: One hundred pitches by the entire Mariners staff in this
- 24:56Speaker 1: Game one. It is, according to Sarah Langs, the fewest
- 25:00Speaker 1: by a team to win a postseason game since the
- 25:02Speaker 1: Dodgers in Game two of the twenty eighteen NLDS against
- 25:06Speaker 1: the Braves. And they sure could use that medicine for
- 25:09Speaker 1: this Game one coming off what they did so an
- 25:11Speaker 1: impressive three to one win for the Mariners. Brian Wu
- 25:14Speaker 1: is on the playoff roster for the MS and could
- 25:16Speaker 1: be a factor later in this series. That's important to
- 25:19Speaker 1: keep in mind as well. Maybe it's Castillo game two,
- 25:23Speaker 1: Kirby game three, Gilbert Game four, and uh Wu game
- 25:29Speaker 1: five maybe And for the Blue Jays no Boba Schet,
- 25:33Speaker 1: but Max Scherzer and Chris Bassett added to the roster. Oh,
- 25:38Speaker 1: logan Gilbert tomorrow is the word on the street, off
- 25:44Speaker 1: the press.
- 25:46Speaker 2: How am I? What am I? What am I missing?
- 25:47Speaker 2: There isn't isn't Gilbert on short rest?
- 25:51Speaker 1: Also then Daniel Kramer reporting logan Gilbert will start game.
- 25:55Speaker 2: Two, Okay, I mean he started he started? What game?
- 26:03Speaker 1: Gilbert was Game three in Detroit and then pitched in
- 26:07Speaker 1: Game five we're gonna get help from the crack staff
- 26:12Speaker 1: since it's late Tuesday.
- 26:16Speaker 2: So Tuesday he's pitching again Monday.
- 26:20Speaker 1: But my thing was he already went thirty four pitches. Yeah,
- 26:24Speaker 1: he went four pitches, but I guess that's an extend
- 26:28Speaker 1: bullpen session.
- 26:29Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 26:31Speaker 1: Hey, you also check in with your guys. Who feels good?
- 26:34Speaker 1: He feels good? Right? And you roll with Logan Gilbert.
- 26:39Speaker 2: You gotta have It's more than just Hey, Logan, how
- 26:42Speaker 2: you feeling. I'm good? I'm good. No, it's like, dude, seriously,
- 26:47Speaker 2: like we need to know because we need of you,
- 26:52Speaker 2: Like what do we have?
- 26:53Speaker 1: So?
- 26:54Speaker 2: Hey, good for them? Thirty four pitches in game five
- 26:57Speaker 2: and you guys, the guys on the stem and ice
- 27:01Speaker 2: machine right now for sure getting it ready.
- 27:04Speaker 1: They like him on the road and Castillo at home.
- 27:07Speaker 1: That is very evident. Wow, I mean it asked me right.
- 27:12Speaker 1: I love Logan Gilbert. I mean who spoke to him?
- 27:15Speaker 1: What a week and a half ago? Super swing and
- 27:17Speaker 1: miss guy strikeouts up big this year and he had
- 27:20Speaker 1: a big game in Detroit for the Mariners. So we'll
- 27:23Speaker 1: see what he looks like in Game two, coming off
- 27:26Speaker 1: a weird situation it's not even short rest. It's like
- 27:29Speaker 1: a weird thirty four pitch bonanza and we'll see if
- 27:33Speaker 1: he's okay or if he was like Matt Boyd saying
- 27:35Speaker 1: he's okay, but he wasn't really okay, because then Boyd
- 27:37Speaker 1: was really good the next time around. That was the
- 27:39Speaker 1: cub situation in the other series. Oh, it sounds shorts.
- 27:45Speaker 2: It's not short rest. It's just it's just what I
- 27:49Speaker 2: would call travel ball. He's got travel ball arm right now.
- 27:53Speaker 2: Like he started and then they're like, we need you
- 27:56Speaker 2: to win the semi final game. Came back in and
- 27:59Speaker 2: he's like, well, I've I've thrown I've thrown one hundred
- 28:01Speaker 2: and twenty pitches in the last I'm looking at it.
- 28:05Speaker 2: That was five days apart, and now we need you
- 28:08Speaker 2: go and throw and start again for our high school team.
- 28:11Speaker 2: Like it's like the old travel ball travel ball kids
- 28:14Speaker 2: schedule where it's like, well, he only threw one hundred
- 28:16Speaker 2: and two pitches, one hundred and twenty pitches last week.
- 28:19Speaker 2: He can throw one hundred again. It's like, well, that
- 28:22Speaker 2: was three days ago, so I guess everything's out there.
- 28:26Speaker 2: It's a postseason.
- 28:27Speaker 1: Yeah, he's a vet at this playing fourth year in
- 28:30Speaker 1: the bigs, and Trey Savage is a rookie who's a
- 28:34Speaker 1: baby in the big league's coming off a nice, nice rest.
- 28:38Speaker 1: It's been a minute since he was shining in Toronto
- 28:41Speaker 1: right a little over a week, so we're excited for it.
- 28:44Speaker 1: We're going to do a postgame show after that game, too,
- 28:47Speaker 1: so we'll be back to talk about that one. It's
- 28:49Speaker 1: a little bit earlier. It's five o'clock Eastern time first
- 28:52Speaker 1: pitch for that one, So figure the games three ish
- 28:54Speaker 1: hours and we'll be on here at eight to do

- 28:58Speaker 1: many of these as we can, kind keep you posted

- 29:03Speaker 1: up with the games, where the games are at in
- 29:05Speaker 1: terms of the series, and then we'll do as many
- 29:07Speaker 1: of these as possible. So hope you enjoyed it. That
