- 0:00[rock music plays] You know what?
- 0:19We don't need a whole lot of this intro? I'm now all paranoid that I didn't turn everything on again. Although, I know this is on. I know that time. I do see- I see a red button. Is that the good button?
- 0:28That's a good thing, yeah. These are our EC Unlike last week. [laughs] Yeah, but did... Well, you know, these were what recorded last week. They were okay. They- I listened to it today.
- 0:38And I had to run it through the Adobe Podcast AI thing to kind of clean it up, but it worked okay. Aren't they getting sued for their licensing bullshit right now? Who knows? They- They are. They are. It's awesome.
- 0:49Probably. Sorry, that's my department. I hate them guys. I hate those guys. Just like I hate Dell and Apple and everyone else. [laughs] There, I said it. Tony's a hater. Damn the man. Equal opportunity hater.
- 1:01I hate everything. I hate everything equally, and with fervent whatever, whatever. Hey, everybody. That was Tony talking over there. Yep. JK hacking up along. [laughs] Although, that was earlier. Yes.
- 1:14And today, we have Brad Dickson as our very special guest in the studio. I, I believe he is- Hello... B. Rad Dickson. Hello. B. Rad. [laughs] I just... It's in the background. It's still going. Listen to it.
- 1:27[rock music plays] That's an AI-generated stoner doom metal track. Oh, really? [laughs] Yeah, from, uh, from U- Udio. That's funny. I gotta mention Udio just 'cause that's where that came from.
- 1:38How many weeks in a row are we gonna mention Udio? Probably no more. Okay. I don't know. It's in the- I'm holding you to that next week. No, it's in the show notes. Okay.
- 1:45And I still wanna go there, and I wanna do a bunch of different- Well-... just not necessarily stoner metal. For me, for me, with a small child at home, every time you say Udio, all I think of is Yu-Gi-Oh.
- 1:57Is that- That's an anime... is it, is it just that's the character? Yeah. Well, and the name of the show, too. [laughs] I guess- Sorry. I'm living you-... who's this, who's this guy? [laughs] That's Yu-Gi-Oh.
- 2:08[laughs] Is that... That's Rotoro. What's the guy's name? The- I don't know. It's b- I, I just have to deal with it in the background 'cause I have children.
- 2:15'Cause I do walk, I do walk around the house like that once in a while, and Garrett's all like, "That looks like what's-his, whatever his name is." I...
- 2:22Although, yeah, he doesn't mention it much anymore being a high school graduate and all now. You're done with yours, too. How was the party? We ate a lot of food, drank a lot of beer. That's a party.
- 2:34Sam walked around, 'cause he's so antisocial, and picked up nails, and handed me several hands of roofing and/or siding nails.
- 2:42[laughs] Dur- like, in the middle of the party, just walked up and he's like, "Open your hand," and dropped shit into it. [laughs] 'Cause, you know. There you go. It's Sam. I almost made it over. Almost.
- 2:53Oh, there, you missed out on some- I was-... killer, uh, killer empanadas. Oh, shit. It was- Right?... it was part of the flight plan, and then the flight plan got- Lots and lots of beer... accelerated.
- 3:04Yeah, and that included going to the Amorphic thing with, uh- And, yeah, that... M545 and Two and a Half Stars and what's... It's Fake Twin, is that the other one? [sighs] And then Resurrectionists was really good.
- 3:19Yeah, those were great. Well, they're all good, actually, but for a Sunday at 3:00 in the afternoon and getting four bands for free, can't go wrong. That was yesterday? That was- Mm-hmm... uh, Sunday, this past Sunday.
- 3:29Oh, yeah, yeah. It's Tuesday. Over at Amorphic. Already. Yeah, already. Well, while we record this. When you're listening to this though, it will be Thursday. Mm-hmm. It's like internet time.
- 3:40So Brad is a, uh, he's kind of a BMX aficionado. Yeah. And a killer DJ. Don't rule that out. Well, I haven't seen this DJ action. When are we gonna- He's good... when are we getting the DJ going?
- 3:51I don't know if that's ever gonna happen again. It should. Do, do you, like, put a BMX on its side and use the- No... wheels as turntables? [laughs] Wiggity, wiggity, wiggity. No. Never happening again.
- 4:01How about the BMX riding? That's happening. Oh, yeah. Definitely tomorrow. Tomorrow? I'm off for the rest of the week, so- Oh, nice. Nice. That'll work. Doing inventory at work, so- So you get to chill out. Yeah.
- 4:13We don't, we don't have to do it. I just like to- We don't have to drive...
- 4:15when they're doing inventory, I like to load the truck up with everything and then kind of move it somewhere else, and they're like, [clears throat] "Wait, did we count that already?" It's like, "I don't know.
- 4:23Now it's over here. Count it over here." Yeah. That's called creative accounting. [laughs] B. Rad's gotta... He... You know, you, you do a good thing. I do applaud you for your job. I- Yeah. I think- It's all right...
- 4:35helping out other people is really important, and I don't really do it at the university. I have done it in the past for other things, but I do really applaud that, yeah, you help- I think you help people.
- 4:47If you d- if you weren't there- Uh... people like Michael would not- Help... be able to do- Yeah... his job. You help, yeah, you help the poor. He helps people far, far more in need than I do.
- 4:56I gotta fix a fucking printer. He feeds people. Yeah. You had, you had to find the printer for me first. I, I, I fed some lions today. Nice. Was, was that the Big Cat Rescue? The Wisconsin Big Cat Rescue. Nice. Yeah.
- 5:07I have me- So I checked in with your, uh, he... I checked in with your Instagram. Is that your main area that you put, like, pictures and stuff? Yeah, yeah. Not so much Facebook. Yeah.
- 5:16Not so much TikTok- Well, it, it, it's-... or whatever... it's on both. Okay. It's Facebook and Instagram. So you put it on one, and it shows up- Yeah... on the other. I like Instagram a lot.
- 5:23I, I, I get caught up in that, and then I forget that it does that, and I'm like, "Whoa." Yeah. "Whoa, there's a lot of stuff over there." Um, so it's, uh, is it just... It's braddickson43 at Instagram? Not even sure.
- 5:35I'm pretty sure that's what it is. [laughs] I mean, sure. Sorry. Sure. Let me see your wrist. Is your wrist labeled 43? Yeah, it is. There it is. No, no. It's bdickson. Bdickson43. 43. 43. At Instagram, anyway.
- 5:46Uh- Yeah... so, yeah, I, I checked into your photos, 'cause I, I usually get your reels when you're doing reels. Mm-hmm. And, uh- Which are great...
- 5:54I, you know, the, the most recent thing I saw that you did that I thought was super cool was this, um, uh, Buckeye BMX thing. Yeah, yeah. Tell, tell us about that a little bit, just because it was recent.
- 6:04And then maybe we'll- Delve, delve back into your past- It was so awesome... with some questions about your [laughs]... So what was the deal? Is that an annual thing or? It is an annual thing.
- 6:13And it- So that was the fourth annual one. Okay. Yeah. Is it a show or is it a- It's a BMX show... swap meet? And it's a ride-out. Oh, okay. So it's a ride-out on Friday night, and then Saturday is the show. Nice. Yep.
- 6:27So what the... Couple, three weeks ago it was, Friday, we get there and we met at a park. This is in Dayton, Ohio. And this is with your, uh, your, your friend, Allison? My friend, Allison. Significant other. Yes.
- 6:40Allison. So we get there and- Better ask. Better ask... so we rode out through Dayton with 250 people. Wow. Wow. Yeah, yeah. All BMX? It was amazing. All BMX? All BMX bikes, with Hollywood Mike Miranda- Whoa...
- 6:56and Eddie Fiola, so. Guys were- Were tricks happening? Amazing, amazing. There had to be a lot of tricks happening. Eh, I mean, we were, we were riding around, so. Yeah, the...
- 7:06Were you, were- But at certain points we stopped and we were doing tricks, yeah. Sure. Yeah. Well, that sounds...
- 7:11I mean, I was looking at some of the bikes that were in the show part of it, and these things are, like, pristine from- Yes, yes... what, the mid-'80s? Some of those bikes are worth, like, $5,000. Thousands. Yeah. Yeah.
- 7:22Absolutely. Yep. [laughs] Well, that Schwinn Predator Freestyle- Yeah... that was... Good God- Pretty, yeah... that thing looked unridden. Mm-hmm. It was so clean. [laughs] Yep.
- 7:32Yeah, I just, I came up a little earlier than the BMX scene, in the skateboard side of stuff. Me too. And just kind of, whatever, missed out on the major part of it.
- 7:42I mean, I came up, you know, it's stingrays and orange crates, and then it's blurry, and then it's- Cool BMX... then it's mountain biking. So- Yeah, yeah...
- 7:49um, I, I kinda missed the comradery, but I mean, it's obvious that there's still a very avid community of people who did stuff back then that still do it now. Yep. I mean- Yep...
- 8:00you know, you've been doing this for 30-plus years? Almost, almost 40. Almost 40 years. Yeah. Yeah. So. Awesome. I mean- And hopefully I can do it for a lot longer. Yeah. In other words, he's fucking old.
- 8:11[laughs] Well, not as old as you, though. Yeah, there's a lot of younger- I know, he's the youngest. Well, you're, no, you're the youngest, then you. I'm a baby. Then me, then you. Just... Don't point at me, man.
- 8:19I pointed. Yeah, I pointed, Noble. Don't point at me, bro. Don't point at me, bro. [laughs] I, I love to see my old i- bicycle idols, like, still doing it, like Eddie Fiola, still riding, 60 years old. Mm-hmm.
- 8:30Martin Aparijo, 61, still riding. He's, he's better than he was back in the day. That's unbelievable. He rides every day. Really? Somehow, somehow- Yeah...
- 8:38I, maybe it was, uh, Facebook today or somewhere, I got a, I got a Tony Alva thing. 67- Yes... Tony Alva. Geez. Yes. Wow. You know, skateboarding. Yeah. But still similar in that you can still- Oh, man...
- 8:47break your shit all up when you're an old man. Oh, hell yeah. But, you know, I guess you've been doing it so long. I watched some of your tricks.
- 8:53It's obviously, you've done those thousands of times or- You're great at them I've, I've changed my style. Yeah. I've changed my style a lot over the years. So it's not so- I love watching your videos...
- 8:59so it's not so break your bone-ish? It's a, it's a little... [laughs] It's, it's retired, yeah. You're not riding wood piles and- I call them my retirement tricks. That's great. [laughs] I like them.
- 9:08I enjoy watching your posts. I like that idea. I'm, I'm like, I definitely, as soon as I see one, I'm like, "Gotta watch this." I like that slide going backwards thing. Yep. That's pretty cool. I like those too.
- 9:17I don't know, it just looks cool. I'll do those for the rest of my life. It's [laughs] good. You had a, you had a video overlay or a audio overlay, I can't remember what it was, but I was like, "Oh, God.
- 9:26It's even better with this music." Yeah, yeah. I was like, "This is so good." Yeah. Well, where do you get your tunes from? Do you get them from Udio? Udio? No. Udio? No. Udio? What the hell is Udio?
- 9:36[laughs] It's the AI- That's Sh- It's the AI music generator. Oh, no, no. No. [laughs] Skynet, Skynet. So, so- Right...
- 9:44do you find f- Is the music, you find something somebody would know and you just use it, and it doesn't get flagged? Or is it stuff that's like, "Oh, this sounds cool. I'm gonna put it in there"?
- 9:53So I do all my videos with my iPad mostly. Okay. And there's the iMovie or whatever thing on there. Oh, gotcha. So I film it, you know, the separate clips with the iPad. Sure, sure.
- 10:07And then the, the iMovie, it just puts them all together, and then- Oh, they've got the Magic- You can add music. You can-... they've got the Magic Movie. Oh, man, you can do great stuff with that thing.
- 10:16I, yeah, I actually- It's amazing... for our, for our very awesome video part of the show. Yeah, yeah. If I, if I turn it on. If I didn't... You know what? I don't know.
- 10:23[laughs] We'll, we'll turn it on next- I don't see a red button. We're... Yeah. A red light or... That thing needs a red light on top of it. I think I'm gonna fix that.
- 10:30But I actually- Well, the new cameras do have a red light, so you would know. [laughs] I just still don't understand how red- Means go... well, actually I do know how.
- 10:37It was always outside the room, like when you're in radio. Or quiet. It was outside the room, which red meant stop, don't come in here, we're doing something important.
- 10:45And to me, you know, always green always meant go, so. [laughs] But I'm, I'm learning. After 260 shows, you'd think I'd figure it out by now, wouldn't you? [laughs] You didn't last week. [laughs] Hey-oh.
- 10:56After multiple times. Are you sure you got that button? Silence, you. You can be replaced. [laughs] Fine. [laughs] With AI. Next week. [laughs] Can it be next week? Brought to you by Udio. Oh, it's AI Tony this week.
- 11:10[laughs] AI Tony's not as funny as the real Tony. That's, that's not a threat, just so you know. [laughs] That's not even remotely a threat. [laughs] I just figure you keep coming 'cause you like doing it.
- 11:19Otherwise, you could just stay home and have more fun. And having beer next door and stuff, so. Right? Yeah. Other, otherwise, why are we all here, actually? Right. Pretty much. Uh, hey, here's something interesting.
- 11:30You, you guys remember my buddy Gunner from Decorah? Yeah. Decorah. Decorah. Still one of the fastest guys at, like, 60 or whatever he is. He's pretty close to my age. And, uh, Pro- Faster than that Chewy guy...
- 11:42prob- Oh. Probably one of the three fastest guys in that area of Iowa. And, uh, he- Iowa... a- a- and I think Chewy had this bike, and I know Jeff Olvera had it.
- 11:55Jeff Olvera's the wrestling coach still after I don't know how many years at Luther College. Um- He's a pussy. Or... [laughs] Yeah. Please don't listen to this, Jeff. Please don't listen to this.
- 12:04[laughs] Yeah, he's smaller than you. He will kill me. He's smaller than you. You'll kick your ass. I've watched him take someone down. [laughs] I've watched, and it's frighteningly strong. [laughs] So- Sorry. Sorry...
- 12:13way back in the olden times, he bought a very special Schleck Teasdale built- Ooh, what's going on over there? Oh. Bloopity bloop. Important.
- 12:21Um, he built a very specially designed [clears throat] Schlick 'cause he wanted a fat bike, but something that was light, small, single speed, and didn't have to have the full on five-inch tire. So it was, it was
- 12:33super custom made, and he rode it for several years, and he ended up at one point breaking it 'cause he's a beast.
- 12:39[laughs] So sometime towards the very, very end of Tom Teasdale's frame building career, he had another one built and it was number 835, which we think- [clears throat]... is the very last
- 12:53Teasdale sh- it's a sh- you know, it's got Schlick livery on it- Before he passed?... but it's a Teasdale.
- 12:58So he did pass that year on RAGBRAI, and for some reason, the crank that, uh, O'Gara wanted to use on it, it wouldn't quite clear the chain stay, so he wanted to send it back to Tom and have him dimple it, but Tom was not around anymore, so he just kinda took to banging on it with a hammer and made enough clearance, which it worked fine.
- 13:18It really does? Yeah. [laughs] And, uh, and he rode it for years before he decided carbon was more his speed 'cause he wants a 17-pound fat bike or something. Pfft. Because he is the fastest guy- Weenie... in Decorah.
- 13:29[laughs] Yep. [laughs] I don't even know this guy. Yeah, right?
- 13:32[laughs] And then, uh, so Chewy had it for a while and used it to pull [clears throat] the trailer for all those, uh, those Rochester events where we did the Santa Rampage up there.
- 13:41He was pulling the trailer, the long trailer with all the, the gifts and stuff in it that we collect for, um, Toys for Tots. Toys for Tots, yep.
- 13:49And then it sat in his garage for a couple years, and now Gunner has it, and it couldn't have gone to a better guy, [laughs] so it's got quite the history, this number 835. Hmm.
- 13:58It's not maybe quite as historical as some of those BMX bikes at the Buckeye BMX, uh- Man... ride out, but, uh- Seriously... it's got cred. I just thought it was really cool 'cause he just sent it this morning.
- 14:08I'm like, "Oh, this is gonna make something good for the show." Hey. Uh-huh, there you go. There you go. Yep. Um, what, how many bikes do you have, Brad? Uh, probably about five or six completes.
- 14:19And they're all 20-inch- They're all BMX... all 20-inch BMX. I have one 24. I was gonna say, you have one 24. One, one cruiser, yep. I wish I- What is that, GT? No, it's, it's actually, it's a Stranger Things bike. Oh.
- 14:31But it looks like an old school Schwinn from like- Mm-hmm... the late '70s. Was it made as a, a racing bike? It was just made as a, you know, as like- Right, ride around the neighborhood bike... Stranger Things. Yeah.
- 14:43Yeah. Yeah. And I put cool parts on it, you know? Uh-huh. It's, it's steel. It's a steel frame, so I really shouldn't be jumping it, but I do jump it a little bit. Steel frames are made for jumping.
- 14:54Yeah, not for a 200-pound dude. Yeah, st- the, the ones that we built, the three BMX bikes that we built, you c- I don't think anybody could ever kill them. The frame weighed like nine pounds. [laughs] Right.
- 15:04[laughs] It was like a ramp bike, but 24 inch. [laughs] No, I really need to- A Fisher that I'm sitting on... I really need to not jump this bike 'cause it's gonna break. Yeah. Well, yeah. So what are your...
- 15:14All your other bikes are steel, aren't they? Uh, chromoly. Chromo- 4130 chromoly. There you go. That's steel. That's, that's all you make bikes out of these days, folks. You don't need no carpet fiber- Nope...
- 15:23or new fangled aluminum or- Mm-hmm... uh, whatever you're 3D printing in your basement these days. Which by the way, Tony Burger- Burger... I went down to, [laughs] uh, Andrew's basement to see his 3D-printed RC plane.
- 15:36Yeah, I- I was like, "This thing is surprisingly heavy. Do you know when we make RC planes, what we do is try to make it as light as possible?"
- 15:45I'm curious about it though, because I've seen all these, you know, 3D printed, uh, bottom brackets, centered metal, titanium, you know, chain stays. It's like a thing that has...
- 15:56And, and you put your tubes on it, and it's 3D printed. I'm like, "Wow." [laughs] That's new technology, folks, right there. Right. Well, it's not that- Heavy new technology... I guess it's not that new anymore.
- 16:04They make fighter airplane parts out of it. It can't be that new, but [clears throat] that's what I'm seeing. Can you print carbon fiber? Uh- Probably, but I just don't, I don't know enough about 3D printing...
- 16:14I don't know about carbon fiber. You can print metal, I know that. Right. And Andrew explained to me- And concrete... how it's different. It's not additive like it is now. It uses lasers and stuff.
- 16:21[laughs] It's really cool. Anyway, so, uh- [laughs]... that's not old school though. That's new school. Yeah. No, not middle school, fifth grade, like junior high. Mm-mm.
- 16:31[laughs] So at one, at one time in the mid-'90s, my freestyle bike weighed 50 pounds, so I am not a light guy. Like, I don't care. [laughs] Like, my bike is pretty light now, but- How? How did you get- What do you-...
- 16:47a 50-pound freestyle bike? That's why I was so muscular back then. Well, I know you were huge when I first met you. [laughs] I wasn't huge, I was just strong, yeah. So what, what...
- 16:56I'm gonna throw this little side note in. I met Brad at Art Bar. We were hanging out. [laughs] I don't know when the whole, how long we hung out, et cetera, but I had to go home and Brad had a fixed gear bike. Ooh.
- 17:12And I had never ridden a fixed gear bike in my life. [laughs] So I'm like- Like a 20-inch fixed gear? No, yeah, it, it was a 700C fixed gear. No, I had a 16. Oh, okay.
- 17:19[laughs] And I'm like, "Hey, can I take your bike home?" And he's like, "Yeah, sure." Now mind you, I was living in the 3000 block of Booth. This is two blocks.
- 17:27[laughs] And somehow between riding home and coming back, I had to give Brad a bike with a flat tire. [laughs] Jesus. I, I don't know what happened, dude- I don't, I don't remember that... but the tire's flat.
- 17:38Oh, don't you at all? No, I don't. Oh yeah, dude. It was your- That's funny... it was your fixie and I'm like- That's funny... "I don't know what happened. Uh, you have a flat tire, so you should call Tom."
- 17:44Were you doing, like, Jesus skids on the way home or- I was doing... No, I don't know. The first thing I'm probably... I was, like, trying to live. [laughs] He looks like- Tried to go up the curb?
- 17:52I didn't try to do anything like that. Yeah, like the, the first couple of weeks- It was the rear tire that flatted... of me having the chrome pannier wing and the- Was that that chrome mountain bike? Yeah. Yeah.
- 17:59It was your chrome p- Pisa? Yep. Yep. Yeah. Poppin' tubes. 2005, yeah. Poppin' tubes. Yep. So it was about Cleone... Is it 2005? Yeah, that was a 2005.
- 18:07So it meant Cleone was- But I, I bought it- Oh yeah, she was a year old... I bought it, like, um, way at the beginning of 2005, so- Cleone was born 2005, so-... got it as, got it as babes, so yep, I love that bike, dude.
- 18:18That was a cool bike. I did 40 miles an hour on that thing. Wow, that was- On flat, on flat ground... that wasn't going uphill. No. Speaking of going uphill, where's that thing? It, it, it- Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah...
- 18:29yeah... just so we can- Yeah... just so we can talk [bell ringing] about, you know, top of the hill, strong guys on fixies is what we're saying. Mm. Probably living with- I mean...
- 18:36probably living with Trusty back then, huh? That m- no. [laughs] Way before [laughs] th- [laughs] That man's a beast. All right.
- 18:43So today we have two beers just because there's only that many of four of a kinds in the fridge. There's a lot of doubles. There's a lot of twos in there. Don't you have a whole bunch of...
- 18:54Didn't you buy a 12-pack of, of- Yeah, we drank most of it last week. Do we really? It's in the thing though, so we can get to it. Pseudo Sue Toppling Goliath. Okay, thank you. Thank you.
- 19:02By the way, if you guys wanna ride up a really big hill, go from downtown Decorah up to Toppling Goliath. It's like two miles and 500 vertical feet. No, thanks. [coughs] It's like, like this. Yeah, you're going.
- 19:14Do that on your fixed gear, yeah. [laughs] And that's what those guys- Or I could push a button... oh, by the way, all the fast guys in Decorah that go up and down, up and down- Fixed gears...
- 19:21up and down, up and down, they're not fixed gears, but they are single speeds. Oh, yeah. So- Mm-hmm... get a lot of- You know why? Get a lot of speeds... 'cause they're going into that... very silly people.
- 19:29Oh, they, they just haven't evolved. Well, that's... Th- yeah, you don't get a... If you don't have a thumb, how are you supposed to shift a bike? Right? That's my thing there. Right. So the other one is- Turtles...
- 19:39the other one, Tony brought the Space Whistle, which is, uh- Rest in peace... it's a Mosaic IPA. It's good. It's good beer. The thing a- the thing about this is you can't get it anymore, so. Right. Blow the whistle.
- 19:49But maybe- Well, I can at home... maybe somebody- I still have one six-pack left... maybe somebody'll pick up the recipes from Company or something. I hope somebody does something w- I'm...
- 19:56Okay, I'm really jaded about River West right now. Um- Yeah, you're jaded about Apple. You're jaded about Dell. No, but I mean- [laughs]... this is my home. This is my neighborhood for 30 years,
- 20:06and I am just getting so tired of just... Someone posted a apartment for $1,350 a month, and it's not a nice apartment. I'm like, "Ah." That's a cash grab. Buy all you can get it.
- 20:23I'm like, are you- How many, how many bedrooms in that? Two. Two. Yeah. Two bedroom. Two bedroom, one bath. If you're- I'm sorry. That's not- [laughs] Like, not 13, 1250 I think it was. Dude, that's the going rate now.
- 20:31With all utilities. That's the going rate. That's insane. Yeah. That's insane. Yep. But if you had grass on your yard, you'd be like, "Get off my grass, you kids." Yeah, I am at that stage.
- 20:41[laughs] But the, the fact of the matter is it should not- Have you- I mean... have you been over to Tony's house yet? The n- the n- I have not... the new crib? I have not. You gotta check it out- The old house...
- 20:50because there's a really cool feature of it which needs to be exploited in that you could have awesome- [clears throat]... under porch bike parking, like- Ooh... the whole- [laughs] On the front... front of the house.
- 20:59[laughs] Yeah. It is pretty high, probably. Yeah, you could just put, like maybe... I don't know. You could put a lot of bikes in there.
- 21:03It'd be really cool, and all those animals that live under there could find new homes then. [laughs] You're, you're over by River West Arby's then, or what? Yeah, I'm three doors down from Mad Planet. Oh, okay. Right on.
- 21:13Three doors down. Three doors down. [laughs] And I have a- [laughs] Oh, yeah. Thanks... a favorite band. Oh, yeah, Maroon 5's coming to Summerfest- And I have-... just in case you wanna go see that too.
- 21:22[laughs] And I have a lot in the app, so I have a nice side lot to park bikes- Oh, okay... which is what I do. You know what they have a complete lack of at Summerfest besides a lot of stuff is- Morals?...
- 21:31any- anything punk rock oriented. Morals. Right. No punk rock at Summerfest this year really- It's pretty lame... that I could think of. Yeah.
- 21:38Cleo went and saw SZA, and is now trying to get her money back because they flashed up a sign to evacuate now. Yeah, it was... Oh, so that was the day of the- Saturday night... of, of the big, uh, light- So okay.
- 21:51So my daughter is a stage manager at Miller. Seven times different people were calling and saying, "Shut it down." And there's only one person that's supposed to be saying, "Shut it down." Why would you say that?
- 22:05Because there was lightning, and if lightning- Oh, the weather?... is within- Yeah, yeah... nine miles of Summerfest, they have to shut it down. Oh, okay. Rain, no, nobody cares about rain.
- 22:12You're gonna play in the rain unless it's falling on your s- board or something, but lightning is a big deal, so. [laughs] Makes sense. Um, but- You could die... but there's like, "Shut it down."
- 22:22Five minutes later, "Bring it back up. Shut it down." [laughs] That's exactly what Cleo said. "La- land the PA. Pull the PA back up." It's just like- Mm-hmm... I don't know.
- 22:31I'm not sure what's going on down there at the Summerfest. I'm, I'm more shocked that she spent $90 for grass seats- I-... 'cause that was both of our really nice seats for They Might Be Giants.
- 22:40Which you went to how many days? Two days in a row. So that Flood shirt was the most popular, the green one? Oh, yeah, everyone had a Flood shirt on. And they played how many songs from the album? Uh, well, they...
- 22:52The first night was Flood, and I'm drawing a mental blank, but 31 songs the first night. [laughs] That seems like a lot with three- It was freaking great. [laughs] Great. I don't know.
- 23:03I t- I, I think, uh- I may or may not have been on the will call list for that. I never got reconfirmation of it. It was, it was- But I had to go see Jesus Jones, 'cause- [laughs] I had to see Jesus Jones.
- 23:14In the, in the, in the beer thing. Oh. In the beer thing. Jesus Jones and the Barenaked Ladies- Yeah. I, I do-... and the Unbelievable Oh!. No. Now, had I not- Do, do, do, do, do...
- 23:22been way too excited to see They Might Be Giants, I would've definitely been to that show. Well, you didn't even poach that show. You actually- I-... somehow...
- 23:29Did you pay entry or get a- I bought 12 packs of Terrapin for- Oh, you got free tickets-... for-... by buying beer. [laughs] Yeah. [laughs] Wow. That's- Yeah, 12-pack- Okay... boom. There's your ticket. I take that back.
- 23:39That's very smart. There is one good thing about- Very smart... Summerfest, and it is buy beer and get a ticket.
- 23:43[laughs] And the, uh, old radio person now is a person that works at Summerfest, so she got us pit passes- Nice... for the US Cellular stage. Yeah, the- Which got you a little closer. It didn't get you a bathroom.
- 23:54So you were- It didn't get you a bathroom... unbelievable. It didn't get you a bathroom or free beer. Oh, I'm not a big fan of the pit because- I'm just getting closer- It's just-...
- 24:01and I don't need to be that damn close... it's just, like, you gotta know somebody or you gotta pay something to get in there, and it's like, "Just let the people go to the front."
- 24:07Or you gotta get lucky with WMSN, get pit passes for Slater Kinney. Yeah, but the, but every stage has it now, you know? It's like- But that's Uline, and if I w- I could just poach that from the outside.
- 24:17Well- Have my own beer... but I don't have to. I get to be right there. I can smoke my own weed. I- I thought, uh- And it costs me zero... I can smoke my own beer. I thought Slater Kinney was at Briggs.
- 24:24I can use other... Well- According, according to, according to the schedule, it's at Briggs. But according to your ticket- Well, we're gonna find out in a little while- Let's see here, Ryan...
- 24:30when we go to the WNC benefit and Ryan gives me the tickets. Oh, there you go. Yes, guitar smasher. [laughs] This is the... Is, is- It's just a- Are there four of these a year? It's a wristband.
- 24:41Uh, we, we get, Tony and I. What? Yeah, throw 500 bucks at me and I'll give him a... [laughs] [laughs] I drink- I get, I get-... and win free- You-... $500 worth of drinks and free tickets a year...
- 24:54yeah, but you guys listen a lot more often. Although, I do. I do. I listen all the time. So I put my antenna up in the ceiling, and actually, if you look at 91.7, it's right on- It's coming in. It's coming in...
- 25:03on the thing. Look at how many bars there are. Ooh. There's five bars. I still have to listen to it in mono, though. Otherwise, it gets a lot of multi-path...
- 25:10I don't know if anybody's an FM antenna junkie out there, but I sure would like to get something that doesn't do that, and we could get their beautiful signal in stereo. But it's only a 3,300 watt station. It's stereo.
- 25:21You know? It's not, it's not a 50,000 watt mega station. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Like when Mike worked at, uh- New Rock. 102.1. [laughs] Shit. But it was Nostalgia Friday. It was
- 25:35old promotions guy, myself, the old salesperson, and yeah. All right, we need Brad's opinion on Pseudo Sue versus, uh, Space Whistle. Pseudo Sue. Have you ever had this, Pseudo Sue? Space Whistle. No.
- 25:48It is, it is- Every time they say-... out of Decorah, Iowa... Space Whistle, I think it's- Can I say Decorah? How many times can I say Decorah on this show? Decorah, Decorah, Decorah.
- 25:53How many times can you say Udon or Udon noodles or whatever? A lot of times. I don't know anything about noodles. What are you talking about? What was it? Udo? I don't know. Noodles sound good.
- 25:59You're making words up over there. Yug-yoh. I have no idea what you're saying. Uh, here's another thing, just so you know. Like, uh, day after tomorrow- Is it-... is the start of the-... internet time or no?
- 26:10It's the 29th, is the start of the Tour de France. Mm. Ooh. Ah. Ooh, la, la. I tried to figure out how to somehow watch it for free, and you cannot do that. There is not even a trial version of Peacock- Yeah...
- 26:23which is what it's gonna be on. Wow. I think, I think you can do a year for 20 bucks or something. I have Peacock, so I can watch that, I guess. Yeah, I heard about that. I just don't have the code yet. I need the code.
- 26:31Somebody leave the code in the, uh, comments for the video or the, uh, show notes or whatever. All right. So that we can sign up because it is interesting to watch.
- 26:39I'm not, like, a super Euro fan or anything, but it gets... The first stage this year is going to be one of the hardest stages ever on the Tour, I believe. It's 206 kilometers, which would be 120 miles plus- Okay. Yes...
- 26:55on the very first day. Thank you very much. And- That's crazy... you have to factor into that that a lot of it is cobblestone. Have you ever ridden your bike on cobblestone?
- 27:07Let alone riding your bike on cobblestone at 20-plus miles an hour. Not fun. Yeah. I, these- And it being slightly skiddy... these guys are, these guys and la- That's how you get the flats. Yeah. Right...
- 27:16like you were talking about. And we're talking- Yeah, right. Yeah, you're talking, you know, 20- Little, little road tires, yeah... 19. All right. Uh, so that is something I'm curious about on the bikes this year.
- 27:24I don't know how much cobbles are actually on the whole road. Oh, oh, there are. But like Paris-Roubaix is a lot of cobbles. There's very good sections, and it's very famous.
- 27:33And RockShox even made a fork for road bikes way back in the day that I think even Greg LeMond rode, I'm not positive. But they, to deal with the cobbles, but they're still riding, like, 25s or 28s on their 700C.
- 27:47Think they're getting, like, 28s and 32s now- Right. There you have it... 'cause people are starting to realize that a little lower pressure's a lot more comfortable- And-... a lot less fatiguing. Tubeless.
- 27:57Well- And less that. Yeah, they work, they run 'em tubeless. Yeah. Dude. Because then you don't pop your tube- Right. Yeah... on your... Yeah. Hmm.
- 28:04I just, uh, I'm curious how, how bike technology, because that, that's supposed to trickle down to us. It's- But nothing ever on a Tour de France bike tours, trickles down to me.
- 28:14It, it's almost like they're doing Tour de France on gravel bikes. I think it's virtual. It's actually- They're all just sitting in there with, in virtual goggles- With BioDog or something... online, like.
- 28:25Yeah, they're, yeah, they're on, like, their Zwift bike or their Peloton, and we're all just getting, like, the AI-generated version of the- That's what they do in the off time at the Sphere in Vegas. It's coming.
- 28:32You know it's coming. Oh, w- [laughs] The next time some guy does a quadruple flip or a f- [laughs]... quin- quintuple, I'm pretty sure that's gonna be an AI generated. [laughs] Right. That was me. Yeah. I did that.
- 28:44I don't know. I did that. So, uh, here's a, a final, well, it's not a parting thought, but it's a question for Brad, because in the old days, uh, tricks were sorta simple i- in both skateboarding and in BMX.
- 28:57You c- you did a jump. Mm. You know? Yeah. Well, I don't know, maybe you didn't come up as early as I did, but basically you're jumping milk crates- Oh, absolutely...
- 29:05and, like, trying to be Evel Knievel is the first thing you're trying to do, is jump as- I was jumping my bike in the '70s... yeah, yeah, jumping as far as you can. Yeah, yeah.
- 29:12Over, over girlfriends and, and w- Banana seat bike. Yeah, right on. Okay. Oh, yeah. So, so, uh- I had a banana seat in my basement... and then, you know, then people...
- 29:20I didn't, I don't know when, you know, ramps, that was the first thing. I think pools were next, right? Or anything with a r- not a pool, but a- Hmm... but an inclined thing that you could ride up and down maybe. Right.
- 29:31Yeah. So, so- Quarter, quarter pipes always were, like, the first intro. Yeah. Whenever, like, friends of mine would go to skateboarding, and I'm like, "No, stay with the bike. I'm good at that." Yeah.
- 29:41I suck at the s- skating. Well, we had... Okay, so Northern Lights down on Water Street had a really cool, like, curvy thing. It was about six feet high. Mm-hmm. But it was not only...
- 29:49It was, it went up to their loading dock, so you had to go there when, like, on the weekend when nobody was there. Yeah, yeah. But not only did it curve real nicely- Mm-hmm...
- 29:56to vertical, but it also curved this way, too, like 45 degrees. Complex. Complex curve. Yeah, it was- Complex curve. You know how I know about that? What? Uh, college and stuff? Bringing it back. [laughs] Dinardo. Oh.
- 30:12[laughs] Like, who showed up- Dinardo... at the party, by the way. Can you say Dinardo again? I don't want to say- Say Dinardo... Dinardo again. That's bad news. If we say it three times, he's gonna fucking show up.
- 30:21Oh, right. Just the, so- Hey... my whole point here was about, you know, how tricks evolved and how- Do you think we've, like, reached a point where to jump to the next level, what's gonna happen in freestyle?
- 30:35Or, you know, I mean- Well- A, a, a vert, like a ramp, what are you gonna do? Another twist, another McFlip, another whatever. I was a skater and a BMXer. Okay, right on. I did both. Yeah. I grew up doing both, yeah.
- 30:46Multi-talented. Yeah. Well- And DJing too. Yeah. I don't know how good I was. That's a tri- that's a trifecta right there. We should not be here with this man. [laughs] He's just way too cool.
- 30:55[laughs] I don't, I don't know. Like, the new stuff is cool. I love it. I, it's, it's amazing. I'm blown away by it. But you know what? I would rather watch somebody from the old school do something stylish, you know?
- 31:09Gotcha. It's got that much more appeal to me. I don't know. Yeah.
- 31:13So would you- Not to take anything away from those dudes that are- No, no, I, it's like, it's like watching Kurt- Flying through the air doing the- They're awesome, man...
- 31:18oh, hey, let me just grab that and just- It's amazing... flip it around once and then land on it somehow... it's amazing. Skateboarding and BMX. Yeah, and- It's amazing. It's amazing...
- 31:24what about the Rotten Tomato and that, uh, snowboarding thing? [clears throat] Eh, snowboarding. I was a snowboarder [laughs] too actually for a little while. No, I'm just- Dragon's Back...
- 31:32but I am thinking, I like- [laughs] I- He's the Flying Tomato, not the Rotten Tomato. I'm sorry. [laughs] I'm sorry. You talking about Sean? I'm sorry. All I'm saying here is that I, I think, uh- Super legit beer...
- 31:43Brad brought up a good point, is that sometimes that stuff happens so fast that seeing style, unless you're like so into it that you're like, oh, he just flicked his finger at you while he was doing whatever he did, or he's, you know- Yeah...
- 31:56looking at his fing- you know, whatever. So- Did a bump mid-air. [laughs] Well, yeah. [laughs] It- Oh, yeah. That was- It is kinda cool how- Where you at, Mike? [laughs]...
- 32:05that, that old school style in both has come back. Yeah. Has it? No, I appreciate that a lot- Yeah. Yeah. Oh, yeah...
- 32:11because I think it, it, because it, it's more evident what's happening when it's stylish versus just doing as many flips or twists or whatever as you can. Doing five tail whips in a row. Yeah. Can you do... Yeah.
- 32:22Like, why? Right. Do one and make it look- 'Cause it's a video game... fucking badass. It's a video game. Right. Right. [laughs] Skate or- Or die... or die. Yeah. Yeah. You gotta look out for those bees.
- 32:33I remember that game. [laughs] I say that, what's, what was the Tony Hawk, uh- Boom Boom Rock Jam?... 900 beep, beep, beep, bop, boop, bop, bop. Oh, yeah. [laughs] I was way too old for that by then. Boom Boom Rock Jam?
- 32:46Did not, did not- You were, you were playing Paperboy, weren't you? I loved Paperboy. Yeah. Oh, such a good game. [laughs] Dude- It's hard... I loved that game... man. That game's hard, man. That and- Yeah... Spy Hunter.
- 32:56Two of the most fun video games ever. Well, the soundtrack of Spy Hunter. Is, oh, you mean, come on, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo. [laughs] [singing] Love the Peter Gunn theme. I'm a Pep Band guy.
- 33:09I played clarinet in Pep Band. You always played Peter Gunn theme. I mean, that was just a given. Right. Well, come on, come on. Any time out, busting it- Come on, Peter Gunn... you know, busting it. Come on, come on.
- 33:21[laughs] Do the locomotion. All right, I don't, I don't think we missed a lot. We talked to Brad a lot. [clears throat] Talked to Tony some, talked to Mike, and whatever, whatever.
- 33:28Uh, Bikes, Boat and Goats has been postponed because Silver Lake is full of campers. Okay. This is Muskegon- So which is actually a-... North Muskegon, right?... good thing. Uh, it's north of Muskegon. Okay.
- 33:39It's actually, yeah, Silver Lake Park. But it was the Bikes, Boats and Goat thing, which I still think is a good idea. Later in the summer I think is a better time. Speaking of that- Other than that-...
- 33:50it's really, I saw, uh, Dave Lund's post, davefuckinglunds-.com... [laughs] that he was in Chicago seeing the Pixies, and it was, like, the second time he's seen The Pixies.
- 34:01I'm like, dude, I've seen The Pixies like a dozen times. I've seen 'em once. Yeah. Oh, I fucking love the Pixies. I think I'm on the one or two times or- Mm... or three.
- 34:11Aaron Frisch did- Did you g- did you pull the CD out from under the- I loved it. It was great... the seat? They're a great band, man. Oh, that wa- Yeah, they're huge Pixies fans... yeah, I still have that burn.
- 34:18I am a huge Pixies fan. I am now though. 2,000- This summer... well, The Pixies rule. I just didn't- Well, I don't-... never really see 'em though. I never realized that till I saw 'em live. Oh, yeah.
- 34:27That's- And I was just like- Well, I know... dude, I know all these songs. And it's probably been said in this podcast, but I also was at Port Shank Hall when- What? Port Shank Hall, you know. Port Shank Hall. Yeah.
- 34:41Every- right? You know Port Shank Hall. Oh, yeah. I ran into some people- And-... at the turf benefit- And right... one person in particular who has a complete... I mean, I do not have any kind words for Mr.
- 34:53Jess whatever. Oh, no, I don't either. But all the same, I normally just keep 'em on the shelf un- until somebody picks the scab off. So- But this guy was just vile. Frank, Frank Black- Black Francis?...
- 35:03uh, yeah, was on stage after Black 47 opened- [laughs] I w-... which was in itself was great... I like Frank Black as [laughs] Black- And he literally looked at the crowd- Hey, that's-... and he's like-...
- 35:14that's two today. Two Bloodhound Gang references in one show. Yeah, right? Yeah. Um- [laughs]... Frank Black turned around to the crowd, he said, "I know I said I would never do this, but I'm gonna do it."
- 35:26And he busted into Here Comes Your Man. Yeah. And it was literally, like, the first time he had played a Pixies song since they broke up. And our friend Leslie and Molly and I looked at each other and we're like,
- 35:39"I can't believe we're part of this." It was one of those situations where you're like, "This is..." And that was way before Loud Quiet Loud, the documentary. Yeah. Way before they went on tour again.
- 35:49Um, I mean, it was just like, holy shit, this is so cool to be a part of. Dude over there with that wristy going on over there. He's sweltering. I know. Yeah.
- 35:59We've already, you know, we've already- I saw the Braiders back in the day. I did too. Oh. Many times. That was awesome. Also one of my more favorite bands. Yeah. The Deal sisters. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Digging on the Deals.
- 36:09We've already- They're, they're cute too. We've already spent way more time with Brad than, you know... We, we gotta have Brad back because I'm pretty sure we haven't even scratched the surface yet.
- 36:18[laughs] Gotta pick the scab a little bit. Yeah, yeah. Of, speaking of picking scabs- Yeah... how's your crashy doing? Oh. You got a crashy over there. Got a little road rash. Little crashy. I picked all three of them.
- 36:27Yeah. [laughs] I got some road rash, he's got some road rash. We'll live. I'm not crashing this week. That's my, that's, that's- I'm a BMXer, man. I pick scabs... that's my new motto. I'm not crashing this week.
- 36:34[laughs] I, I don't have any active ones. That's like asking to crash. [laughs] I know, right? I haven't had any- And there's a latent one that... And I've had some- If you crash it, it's pretty fun... it's pretty fun.
- 36:44I do have some pedal strikes. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That happens. I got pedal strikes. [laughs] Stop picking my scab. [laughs] Actually, I don't have any pedal scabs right now. That's crazy.
- 36:54Do you wear shin guards? Hell no. Like some pansy? No. [laughs] I, I did back in the '90s- Well-... with my 50 pound bike, you know? Oh, yeah. Dude. Pops still wears shin guards. Ooh, Poppy. Do you know Poppy?
- 37:09No, I don't think I know him. Let's, we'll have Pop- Do you know the, uh- We'll have Poppy and B Rad-... Countdown, Countdown Yodo?... on the same show. Oh. How do you get a BMX bike to 50 pounds?
- 37:15Went to high school with him. Oh, nice. [laughs] He's a rad guy. Veto. Yeah, he's awesome. Veto, Veto, yeah. He's awesome. I saw him at the turf benefit. That was- I met him a couple years ago actually. Yeah. Yep.
- 37:24He's cool shit. Yeah. Yep. Very cool. All right, everybody. We could keep going on forever here. I know. We're gonna do this next week though so, uh, don't- B Rad, come on back... don't, don't think you- Come on back.
- 37:32Come on back... don't think you've heard everything we have to talk about. Thank you very much and come again. Come again. [upbeat rock music] Please pay for your groceries and come again.
- 37:43[upbeat rock music]
