- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to wired to hunts, Rut fresh radio, bringing you
- 0:05Speaker 1: the latest reports from the White Tail Woods, and now
- 0:09Speaker 1: your hosts, Casey Smith Tyler Jones. This is Rut fresh
- 0:15Speaker 1: radio powered by vortex. I'm your host, Casey Smith, and
- 0:19Speaker 1: this week we're talking about how good access can get
- 0:21Speaker 1: you on a big buck. What's up, y'all? This is
- 0:38Speaker 1: rough fresh radio, powered by VORTEX, and today we're talking
- 0:41Speaker 1: to hunters from all across the country who've got some
- 0:44Speaker 1: pretty slick tactics. I mean even some stuff you've never
- 0:48Speaker 1: heard of. flactics, slactics, baby. That helped them getting on
- 0:52Speaker 1: some giant bucks and have some really great hunts. So
- 0:55Speaker 1: look forward to that. But right now I am actually
- 0:59Speaker 1: in the room with one Tyler Jones, the mountain man himself,
- 1:02Speaker 1: Tyler Jones, Mr Mule deer splitter, Tyler Jones. Man, how
- 1:08Speaker 1: are you feeling, tyler? Are you black back over two
- 1:10Speaker 1: hundred yet? Are you still slim pickings? I'm two tents
- 1:12Speaker 1: of a pound over two hundred. All right, just wait, man. Yeah,
- 1:16Speaker 1: so been hogging out southern the last week or so.
- 1:20Speaker 1: My goal is to be the second heaviest person on
- 1:24Speaker 1: the element team and I've been that quite a few times.
- 1:28Speaker 1: I don't think I am right now after my hunt.
- 1:30Speaker 1: I'm still a little higher than you were because only
- 1:32Speaker 1: hunting for two days, so I got to pig out
- 1:34Speaker 1: on the way home and eat some Chil eyes, Um Buds.
- 1:36Speaker 1: When you're a good hunter, man, no, you don't have
- 1:38Speaker 1: to hunt very hard. Uh, I wouldn't. I don't know
- 1:41Speaker 1: if to say that, but no matter what, our buddy
- 1:44Speaker 1: mark Kenyon will never weigh as much as you right,
- 1:48Speaker 1: even though he's taller. He's he is what what did
- 1:51Speaker 1: y'all call him? PENCILMAN's mark? Is Uh in Um Ottaho
- 1:58Speaker 1: hunting hard right now. So he's not on the show
- 2:00Speaker 1: with us today, but we'll have him and Josh on
- 2:02Speaker 1: the show next week to discuss all of their adventures
- 2:06Speaker 1: in Idaho and get the low down on what it's
- 2:08Speaker 1: like hunting bucks in the West and what you can
- 2:10Speaker 1: look forward to now. But, Tyler, last week we talked
- 2:14Speaker 1: a little bit about your mule to your hunt, and
- 2:16Speaker 1: this is all sharpening us, getting US ready for up
- 2:19Speaker 1: and and why tell hunts. But why don't you tell
- 2:21Speaker 1: me a little bit about how you changed as a
- 2:25Speaker 1: hunter hunting that mule, Deier um? Well, so actually the
- 2:32Speaker 1: preparation of of like leading up to that hunt changed
- 2:36Speaker 1: me as a shooter really. Um, I knew that this,
- 2:41Speaker 1: that I would draw this tag Um, that I had
- 2:44Speaker 1: the points to draw it and would draw it. And so, basically,
- 2:47Speaker 1: since I've known that, even before I drew the tag
- 2:50Speaker 1: probably I started really like dialing in my shooting and
- 2:53Speaker 1: being very consistent day in and day out with shooting. Um,
- 2:57Speaker 1: I think there's a lot of guys out here that
- 2:58Speaker 1: I understand this when I say this, but prior to
- 3:02Speaker 1: Um doing this, I guess you could say full time,
- 3:06Speaker 1: I um sometimes would pull out the bow about August
- 3:11Speaker 1: and start shooting for the first time since November pretty much.
- 3:14Speaker 1: You know what I mean, and I think a lot
- 3:16Speaker 1: of guys do that and I don't think it's I
- 3:17Speaker 1: don't feel like for me there's a lot like riding
- 3:19Speaker 1: a bike. I could literally pull my bow out and
- 3:21Speaker 1: shoot accurately out to forty, which is all I mean,
- 3:24Speaker 1: like really accurately out to forty, which is all I
- 3:27Speaker 1: needed to shoot at deer Um back then. But Um,
- 3:32Speaker 1: we do a lot of different things across the country
- 3:34Speaker 1: now that might require different uh positions to be in
- 3:38Speaker 1: when you shoot slash different distances. Um. And I did
- 3:43Speaker 1: shoot this melder at a long distance, and I did
- 3:46Speaker 1: that I actually was ten yards inside of what I
- 3:49Speaker 1: felt was good. Um. And I shot a group, a
- 3:53Speaker 1: very tight group. My last group that I shot at distance, Um,
- 3:57Speaker 1: was it was what I basically decided that was gonna
- 4:00Speaker 1: to be. Um, you know what I end up shooting at.
- 4:03Speaker 1: I actually talked to a guy last night at a
- 4:05Speaker 1: fish fry and, uh, this isn't a fish boil, for
- 4:08Speaker 1: all you wisconsiners out there, and that was what they
- 4:10Speaker 1: call it. A boyl. It's what a boy it's a boil, right,
- 4:12Speaker 1: a bowl, when they like do like and stuff? No,
- 4:17Speaker 1: I think they do. They have like a deal. They're
- 4:19Speaker 1: probably yelling at me right now, but it's like a
- 4:21Speaker 1: deal where you throw fishing to a boil instead of like, ah,
- 4:25Speaker 1: I think so. It's definitely, you know, a little so. Uh. Anyway,
- 4:34Speaker 1: at the fish fry this guy told me, you know,
- 4:36Speaker 1: he said, Um, he was shooting good out of eight,
- 4:41Speaker 1: and I was like really, he goes, yeah, I wan't
- 4:42Speaker 1: good enough to kill a deer. And I started thinking
- 4:45Speaker 1: about it and I'm like, well, some people think that
- 4:47Speaker 1: if you're shooting at the range, you know, inside of
- 4:50Speaker 1: a deer's lungs, then you're good to go at that range.
- 4:53Speaker 1: I'm just telling you right now. You guys know that
- 4:56Speaker 1: is blackout city whenever a deer comes in. Sometimes. I
- 4:59Speaker 1: believe it was Tony treach that said. You can have that. that.
- 5:03Speaker 1: I was reading. What's his name? They got kills big
- 5:06Speaker 1: mule deer. UHMER Omer, that's it. UH, he says. That's
- 5:11Speaker 1: what he says too. So yeah, I've heard him said
- 5:14Speaker 1: it too. As you said, half of that or whatever,
- 5:16Speaker 1: which I don't actually agree with either, but it's a
- 5:18Speaker 1: good principle to possibly live by. But I would say, Um,
- 5:22Speaker 1: before you answered the question, that was what I was
- 5:24Speaker 1: going to say. Is The answer for you is, and
- 5:28Speaker 1: knowing you for a while like that's the thing that
- 5:30Speaker 1: has changed the most I've seen in you as a
- 5:32Speaker 1: hunter is your comfort at longer distances, and I think
- 5:35Speaker 1: it comes from just some dedication to shooting, for sure,
- 5:38Speaker 1: and you're good at it. I mean you shot a
- 5:40Speaker 1: really awesome white til last year at uh, pretty long range,
- 5:45Speaker 1: and I say it, yeah, and then you shot, you
- 5:48Speaker 1: know that's so relative for people, you know, but uh yeah,
- 5:51Speaker 1: fifty and then you shot, because I know there's a
- 5:54Speaker 1: people out there I think I'm an idiot for doing that,
- 5:57Speaker 1: you know, but it was perfect. I mean, would you
- 5:59Speaker 1: say leave is an idiot for shooting fifth a deer
- 6:02Speaker 1: at fifty leave? I was the man. Believe I could
- 6:04Speaker 1: put it through his eyes. I guarantee you know what
- 6:06Speaker 1: I mean, but you're not. But I practice a lot
- 6:08Speaker 1: of people and I learned like what I where I
- 6:12Speaker 1: can put it, you know, and I feel like if
- 6:13Speaker 1: I'm shooting a four inch group at a distance, that
- 6:15Speaker 1: I should be able to shoot a white tell at that. Yeah, exactly.
- 6:18Speaker 1: All in all, ethics are literally based on yourself and
- 6:22Speaker 1: what you think. Absolutely and if y'all are interested in
- 6:24Speaker 1: watching that multary hunt, it's absolutely awesome. It is on
- 6:28Speaker 1: the element Youtube Channel. Go check that out if you haven't.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Uh that that uh, that hunt is epic and I
- 6:33Speaker 1: can't wait to see that deer. But back to your
- 6:36Speaker 1: thing about like how it's on you. I just went
- 6:40Speaker 1: to Arizona shot cal there Um and on the pack
- 6:45Speaker 1: out with meat, I had my bow in a hand,
- 6:47Speaker 1: in my hand and I rolled off of, you know,
- 6:49Speaker 1: a rock and fail on my bow and we were
- 6:52Speaker 1: just shooting out here today and I wouldn't shoot at
- 6:54Speaker 1: a deer at fifty. Right now. I can shoot good enough,
- 6:56Speaker 1: but I need to go do a little work, you know,
- 6:59Speaker 1: like inside of forty I would feel pretty good. But like,
- 7:02Speaker 1: and that kind of stuff is gonna change throughout the
- 7:03Speaker 1: season or even on a hunt. Like, for instance, in
- 7:06Speaker 1: twenty nineteen I drew a really awesome tag for elk
- 7:09Speaker 1: and that was a nine day hunt you and I
- 7:11Speaker 1: were on. And at the beginning of that hunt I
- 7:14Speaker 1: felt really good at seventy, but by day about day
- 7:18Speaker 1: five or six, you haven't shot your bow much. You've,
- 7:20Speaker 1: you know, been doing whatever. Had that thing fall off
- 7:23Speaker 1: a tree or whatever. You know, you know how I am.
- 7:25Speaker 1: I like to kind of balance my both places like uh,
- 7:28Speaker 1: you know, you need to be mindful of that kind
- 7:30Speaker 1: of stuff while you're on a hunting trip, whether it's
- 7:32Speaker 1: banged around on the truck, it's been on a horse
- 7:34Speaker 1: and a pack in whatever it might be. Like things
- 7:36Speaker 1: changed throughout a hunt. So like on day seven of
- 7:41Speaker 1: a hunt, maybe you range isn't quite what it was
- 7:43Speaker 1: because you have been practicing it much, or maybe you're
- 7:45Speaker 1: diligent and you do your practice midday or maybe at
- 7:47Speaker 1: the time for that. I don't know. It's scenario specific
- 7:50Speaker 1: and like the ranch buck, which was the year before,
- 7:53Speaker 1: I had him at forty nine, completely calm, nothing, didn't
- 7:56Speaker 1: know anything was going on. He was out there like
- 7:59Speaker 1: in the middle of the open and I'm sitting like
- 8:01Speaker 1: ten foot up in a tree, so good angles and everything.
- 8:05Speaker 1: At forty nine. Didn't take the shot and I say
- 8:07Speaker 1: in that video like, man, I just haven't been shooting.
- 8:11Speaker 1: It's no, it's late November and I haven't been shooting
- 8:13Speaker 1: and I just didn't feel comfortable with it, you know.
- 8:14Speaker 1: So it really is specific and I try to make
- 8:17Speaker 1: the best decision I can in the moment. Man, that
- 8:19Speaker 1: was that was one of the biggest bucks, maybe the
- 8:21Speaker 1: biggest buck I'd ever would have shot at the time.
- 8:24Speaker 1: It just happens, man. You just gotta you gotta play
- 8:26Speaker 1: it by a here and make the best decision you can.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Sometimes you live with it. Mark knows. Marks had his
- 8:30Speaker 1: ups and downs over the years too, man, and that's
- 8:32Speaker 1: what it is when you dear hunt a lot, and
- 8:33Speaker 1: that's one of the things that makes bow hunting out
- 8:34Speaker 1: siding is that it's not a for sure deal, even
- 8:37Speaker 1: whenever you pull the trigger you know, whenever you've got uh,
- 8:41Speaker 1: a rifle or a muzzled or whatever, you know, within
- 8:43Speaker 1: a close range, it's still not add p crazy things happen.
- 8:47Speaker 1: But like you and I know we we grew up
- 8:49Speaker 1: doing a lot of riffle huning. Like it's uh, you know,
- 8:52Speaker 1: if you gotta deer a hunter yards of the rifle,
- 8:54Speaker 1: it's dead rights. Usually, you know, with a with a bow,
- 8:57Speaker 1: especially in the East Texas, white tail twenty yards ain't nothing.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Songs might be in the next county by the Americans there,
- 9:03Speaker 1: you know. So it's a it's a it's a cool
- 9:05Speaker 1: thing and it makes bow hunting super exciting. And today
- 9:08Speaker 1: on the rout fresh portion of this podcast, we're actually
- 9:12Speaker 1: gonna talk to some dudes who are really excited about
- 9:14Speaker 1: things because some exciting things are happening in the woods.
- 9:17Speaker 1: You've got Brent Purvis from Georgia, we've got Brett joy
- 9:22Speaker 1: from just Hunt Club in New Hampshire, we've got Jeff
- 9:24Speaker 1: Danker from buck ventures in Kansas and we've got grant forny,
- 9:28Speaker 1: the everyday outdoorsman in Maryland, and these dudes have been
- 9:31Speaker 1: doing some really good hunting a lot of success in
- 9:34Speaker 1: there's some big bucks going down for like mid September,
- 9:37Speaker 1: which is I would almost call this like the second lull,
- 9:40Speaker 1: or the first of the second you know, people talk
- 9:42Speaker 1: about the October lull, which is controversial in itself. But
- 9:46Speaker 1: like when the velvets on the deer on summer patterns
- 9:49Speaker 1: vellow starts coming off, everything goes haywire right like you
- 9:53Speaker 1: and I have cameras across the country and all of
- 9:55Speaker 1: a sudden we aren't seeing the same bucks. Once the
- 9:58Speaker 1: velot comes off, everything goes crazy. So be able to
- 10:00Speaker 1: get on a big buck right now, once the velvet
- 10:03Speaker 1: is off, is like a pretty tough thing to do,
- 10:05Speaker 1: but it sounds like these guys haven't figured out and
- 10:07Speaker 1: I do think that if you listen to kind of
- 10:10Speaker 1: some of their tactics and some of the things they employed,
- 10:12Speaker 1: as crazy as they might be, you just might be
- 10:15Speaker 1: able to get on a big buck yourself. Now we've
- 10:18Speaker 1: got Brent Purvis from Georgia on here. He's a pastor
- 10:21Speaker 1: down there and Georgia. Brent. What's been going on? Man? Man,
- 10:25Speaker 1: it's been fun. I've got a good one. This week
- 10:27Speaker 1: the deer been running kind of together, as you guys know.
- 10:30Speaker 1: They've been in velvet. But, Buddy, I just missed it.
- 10:33Speaker 1: So I just missed a velvet which has been a
- 10:36Speaker 1: dream of mine. But yeah, I got got some velva
- 10:39Speaker 1: still hanging off this deer, but got a good one
- 10:41Speaker 1: the other night. That's cool, man. Yeah, I saw a
- 10:43Speaker 1: picture of that deer actually on Philip culpepper's story. Apparently
- 10:47Speaker 1: he'd been, you know, talking to you about it and stuff,
- 10:49Speaker 1: and that was really awesome, man. And I don't know,
- 10:52Speaker 1: it's kind of cool to see him just out of
- 10:53Speaker 1: velvet too, because those antlers look so fresh. They're so sharp,
- 10:56Speaker 1: you know that haven't been rubbed up too much. Uh.
- 10:59Speaker 1: So how are you uh kind of patterning these deer
- 11:02Speaker 1: going into this hunt? So this here, you know, early
- 11:06Speaker 1: season pattern. Some of my favorite stuff early and then
- 11:08Speaker 1: you got the road. We've got two different opportunities here.
- 11:11Speaker 1: But early season. Um, what I did is I kind
- 11:14Speaker 1: of did a scarcity tactic. I usually dumped out a
- 11:17Speaker 1: lot of corn the first month and but the problem
- 11:20Speaker 1: is they turned nocternal before opening day here in Georgia
- 11:22Speaker 1: and it's hot. So I did scarcity. I put a
- 11:25Speaker 1: little bit of corn out and I let it go
- 11:27Speaker 1: dry for four or five days. A little bit of corn,
- 11:29Speaker 1: let it go dry. And what happened is that dominant
- 11:31Speaker 1: buck wanted to come into the fastest and get that
- 11:34Speaker 1: corn before those other little eight corners and four corners.
- 11:37Speaker 1: So bottles my tactic and it and it paid off.
- 11:41Speaker 1: And then I did something a little bit crazy. I
- 11:43Speaker 1: I got winded on my first hunt and he was up,
- 11:46Speaker 1: up when. So, I mean I had everything covered, sprayed
- 11:48Speaker 1: down everything. So the next night I've been pouring acorn
- 11:51Speaker 1: rage in there with my corn. This sounds crazy, but
- 11:54Speaker 1: I took a bag, trash bag nonsending, poured acorn range there.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Let it sit for twenty four hour or so when
- 12:00Speaker 1: I got up there. All the since we're familiar for
- 12:04Speaker 1: this book, I I guess I've heard uh, during the Rut,
- 12:08Speaker 1: you gotta be careful of stuff like that. You know
- 12:10Speaker 1: what I mean? Yeah, you gotta be careful. That's right. Don't.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Don't be using that tactic in November. Yeah, you may
- 12:21Speaker 1: get more than what you want. I'm telling you, dude,
- 12:24Speaker 1: it's all right to go into wood smelling like a
- 12:25Speaker 1: snack in September, man, but you do it November, it's
- 12:27Speaker 1: gonna be rough. That's right then, so so let's talk
- 12:30Speaker 1: a little bit about that. You know, you you said
- 12:33Speaker 1: that the that you got winded. Did it? Do you think?
- 12:37Speaker 1: You know, one of the things we've been talking with
- 12:38Speaker 1: some of these guys about this week is the access
- 12:41Speaker 1: uh that they've used. Is Did did that have to
- 12:44Speaker 1: do anything with access? And talk a little bit about
- 12:46Speaker 1: how you were access in this. You know, I had
- 12:49Speaker 1: good access. I was fortunate enough. We cut trails all
- 12:51Speaker 1: throughout here, so I would ride my range or right
- 12:54Speaker 1: down to the spot right even to feed, and I
- 12:56Speaker 1: only did it at noon. So I stayed away from
- 12:58Speaker 1: their their hour or that they would feed. But what
- 13:02Speaker 1: happened is this deer, we actually called him Johnny Ringo off.
- 13:04Speaker 1: You Remember that movie Tu Song that was remember Johnny Ringo.
- 13:08Speaker 1: He talked about that he was high strung. After thought
- 13:11Speaker 1: killed and he said he to poor Solo. It was
- 13:13Speaker 1: just too high strung. This there is for we've watched
- 13:16Speaker 1: him for four and a half years. He's a five
- 13:18Speaker 1: year old deer, or five and a half year old deer,
- 13:21Speaker 1: and he was high strung. So he felt something was off.
- 13:24Speaker 1: So I feel my access was good. We even moved
- 13:28Speaker 1: the stand where he comes in, the entry point. He
- 13:31Speaker 1: would come in and not get around me. That's what
- 13:33Speaker 1: was amazing about it is that he was fifty yards,
- 13:36Speaker 1: you know, up wind of me and just felt something
- 13:39Speaker 1: off that this deer has always been high strung. so
- 13:42Speaker 1: Um that that was something I think that I talked
- 13:45Speaker 1: to Philip culpepper, my buddy off hunt club, and I
- 13:47Speaker 1: was talking to him every evening. He said, man, got
- 13:50Speaker 1: to change your tactics a little bit up and and
- 13:52Speaker 1: that's where I started adjusting and adjusting with the corn
- 13:56Speaker 1: some more, feeding up a little bit more, and then
- 13:58Speaker 1: I actually came up with a crazy tag to the
- 14:00Speaker 1: smelling like food and that night I killed him, he
- 14:02Speaker 1: came within fifteen yards and never smelled. Oh Wow, that's cool, dude.
- 14:06Speaker 1: So tell me more about that hunt that you were
- 14:08Speaker 1: able to capitalize on. Yeah, you know, I knew he
- 14:12Speaker 1: had been coming in there a hunting. I gave him
- 14:15Speaker 1: rest after he busted me, so I said right, this
- 14:17Speaker 1: was smart deer. I gave him two days rest but
- 14:19Speaker 1: kept feeding him. Then came back in and the wind
- 14:23Speaker 1: died down a little bit that night, which was perfect.
- 14:25Speaker 1: It was cool for Georgia. That's odd donea that that
- 14:27Speaker 1: is in Texas is high and Um, he got in
- 14:31Speaker 1: there and to eight pointers came out first and I thought, man,
- 14:35Speaker 1: that's strange. And they started getting weird. He started doing
- 14:37Speaker 1: the whole thing when they started, you know, kind of
- 14:39Speaker 1: kneeling down and backing away, and I knew I had
- 14:42Speaker 1: him then and he came up fifteen yards from me,
- 14:46Speaker 1: hung behind a tree for it felt like an eternity.
- 14:49Speaker 1: He probably wouldn't fine minutes and then he took out
- 14:52Speaker 1: two couple of steps at twenty yards and I just
- 14:54Speaker 1: made a bus of perfect hard shop but weird. It
- 14:57Speaker 1: came out the front of the Um, the front, in
- 15:00Speaker 1: front of the opposite leg, but it blew his hard
- 15:03Speaker 1: out and he didn't go to yards down the heell.
- 15:06Speaker 1: I mean, but choosing a g five and one of
- 15:08Speaker 1: the g five mega meats and I have never seen
- 15:12Speaker 1: so much blood. I mean I've shot here six is
- 15:15Speaker 1: not seen that much blood. Like a door post in Egypt. Man,
- 15:19Speaker 1: you know, just you ain't kidding. I'M gonna have to
- 15:26Speaker 1: use that on video this year. Man. Yeah, that's awesome, Dude. Man,
- 15:30Speaker 1: it just feels so good when they're in tight and
- 15:33Speaker 1: you know the shot is such a big deal, especially
- 15:35Speaker 1: on the southern Jumpie deer, you know, like just the
- 15:38Speaker 1: the Uh, I don't know, the UH, the calmness that
- 15:42Speaker 1: there is and just knowing it's a shot that you
- 15:44Speaker 1: for sure can make comfortably. You know, like anything out
- 15:47Speaker 1: past thirty. I mean I practice in the yard so far,
- 15:49Speaker 1: you know, but anything out past thirties is you're really
- 15:52Speaker 1: kind of a I toss up a little bit on
- 15:54Speaker 1: white tell. You know, when you got them that fifteen
- 15:56Speaker 1: twenty range, it's like they're they're dead meat, as you
- 15:59Speaker 1: said with of the yeah. So, and it's so difficult
- 16:04Speaker 1: too because the other side of that as they can hear,
- 16:06Speaker 1: this deer is on edge that he could hear that,
- 16:08Speaker 1: you know, be pulling back that bow and it got
- 16:11Speaker 1: his attention and I knew how big he was already.
- 16:14Speaker 1: He should score number three in the county, Muskoga County,
- 16:18Speaker 1: on boat kills and the history of the county. We're
- 16:21Speaker 1: kind of a near city limits, but we got like
- 16:24Speaker 1: thirty acres right outside the city limits. So he should
- 16:27Speaker 1: score number three. But he was so on edge. I
- 16:30Speaker 1: had he was so big. I knew he was gonna
- 16:32Speaker 1: be a record. So I had to not look as
- 16:34Speaker 1: at his antlers. I've been looking at that. I'm just
- 16:38Speaker 1: looking at how do I touched this thing in your
- 16:39Speaker 1: as might as possible, as quick as possible, cause the
- 16:42Speaker 1: moment I pulled he looked. Man, we don't bust the
- 16:44Speaker 1: tapes out real often, but it sounds, you know, on
- 16:47Speaker 1: a really big deer like that, it's definitely something to consider.
- 16:50Speaker 1: I'm assuming you've measured him already. What did you tape
- 16:52Speaker 1: out at? He taped out at like one forty two
- 16:55Speaker 1: and some change. And of course they gotta let a
- 16:57Speaker 1: sixty day period and go by then to send the
- 17:00Speaker 1: you know, official measures. But for around here, you know,
- 17:04Speaker 1: that's not that's not a giant. I've killed one sixties
- 17:07Speaker 1: in my bow and stuff like that. But in the
- 17:09Speaker 1: city limits like this, he's gonna hit the record with that.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Georgia boys like him urban bucks, it seems. Man. It's
- 17:15Speaker 1: a that's cool, dude. Yeah, yeah, so if you were
- 17:19Speaker 1: to look at the upcoming forecast and just all the different,
- 17:23Speaker 1: uh you know, uh situations that are going on out
- 17:27Speaker 1: there in the white tailed woods, what would you rate,
- 17:28Speaker 1: on the scale from one to ten, what you expect
- 17:30Speaker 1: the deer movement to be like, specifically buck movement in
- 17:33Speaker 1: the next week and the next week, I would say
- 17:36Speaker 1: there's still in that pattern stage. If if you're feeding up,
- 17:39Speaker 1: they're still good. It's cooling down here in Georgia, so
- 17:42Speaker 1: it's kind of getting exciting. Usually it's hotter than this.
- 17:45Speaker 1: So I'd say the movement probably I'd say a six
- 17:48Speaker 1: or seven, but you still can patterned these deer right now,
- 17:51Speaker 1: which is exciting. It hasn't lost that. Y'All know how
- 17:53Speaker 1: it is the first two to three weeks. You know,
- 17:56Speaker 1: it's just as exciting as the Rut and here in Georgia,
- 18:00Speaker 1: southern Georgia, when it dies, it dies off. So you
- 18:03Speaker 1: you go dead there for, you know, a little while
- 18:05Speaker 1: before November comes and thanksgiving. Then it kicks back up.
- 18:08Speaker 1: So right now is the time to be in the woods. Man,
- 18:11Speaker 1: Awesome Day. Well, that gets me pump for sure, and
- 18:15Speaker 1: I think I'm gonna leave and go hunting somewhere here
- 18:17Speaker 1: pretty soon. But Hey, I appreciate you hopping on with
- 18:20Speaker 1: this man and giving us the rundown there in Georgia
- 18:22Speaker 1: and hopefully you'll get some more time in the stand
- 18:25Speaker 1: this year. Absolutely, man. I look forward to it. Thank
- 18:28Speaker 1: you all for what Y'all do. We Got Brett joy
- 18:32Speaker 1: on the phone now. He is from just hunt club
- 18:35Speaker 1: and he is in New Hampshire. Brett, what's going on? Man? Oh,
- 18:39Speaker 1: just at work today, waiting on the next col front
- 18:42Speaker 1: and hopefullsh and good truck CARC picture stuff. Point. That's cool.
- 18:46Speaker 1: So your day to day is going to work and
- 18:49Speaker 1: just checking that APP the whole time looking for deer. Well,
- 18:53Speaker 1: that's what I'm what's ends up happening more. Will tell
- 18:56Speaker 1: him he gets you need to get some work done too. Well,
- 18:58Speaker 1: one of the owners of the business. So only have
- 19:00Speaker 1: myself look at, and that's self. Accountability is tough, man.
- 19:06Speaker 1: That's cool. Man. So Um here lately. What's U? What's
- 19:09Speaker 1: been the vibe up there in New Hampshire? You know,
- 19:13Speaker 1: it's a it's a funky time. It always is this
- 19:15Speaker 1: time of year. You go kind of a you're we're
- 19:18Speaker 1: in sort of the transition phase from the summer patterns
- 19:21Speaker 1: to fall patterns. You of deer. They're in velvet, deer
- 19:23Speaker 1: that are shed velvet Um. Some of that are really
- 19:26Speaker 1: starting to feel that spike and testosterone. Some of that aren't.
- 19:29Speaker 1: So it's it's kind of highly variable Um this time
- 19:32Speaker 1: of year. But we're kind of like I said, in
- 19:34Speaker 1: that transition phase. We opened the fifteenth of September. So, Um,
- 19:39Speaker 1: it's kind of interesting phase. It can be kind of
- 19:41Speaker 1: feast or famine, if you will. Um, if you're on
- 19:43Speaker 1: a deer that is kind of in his patterns. So
- 19:45Speaker 1: or maybe he's he's changed the new pattern. You've figured
- 19:47Speaker 1: him out. Um, he's gonna be on it for a
- 19:49Speaker 1: bit and you have a really good opportunity to kill
- 19:51Speaker 1: him there. I think the general theme is that most
- 19:53Speaker 1: of these deer are still pretty relaxed, they're still pretty
- 19:56Speaker 1: daylight active and uh, you know there were they favor
- 20:00Speaker 1: more to a consistent pattern than other times in the season. Sure. So.
- 20:04Speaker 1: So what's the weather like and how does it compare
- 20:06Speaker 1: to normal weather patterns? Um, you know what, had an
- 20:09Speaker 1: extremely hot summer, but it seems like those cooler, cool
- 20:12Speaker 1: attempts you just started to move in. We had a
- 20:14Speaker 1: good cold front uh, the last few days, Um, right
- 20:19Speaker 1: for the opener. Actually they're kind of Thursday, Friday Saturday,
- 20:22Speaker 1: which the first three days of the season. We had
- 20:24Speaker 1: a good cold front. Our team killed a buck and
- 20:27Speaker 1: a bear Um, and it had some good hunts. So yeah,
- 20:31Speaker 1: that the TUMPS are good. Looking out it did warm
- 20:33Speaker 1: up a little bit, but we look like we have
- 20:35Speaker 1: another really good cold front coming in the end of
- 20:37Speaker 1: the week. So I would say you can't really ask
- 20:39Speaker 1: for much more than that. Cold Fronts, the two cold
- 20:42Speaker 1: fronts the first ten day of the season that happened
- 20:44Speaker 1: to fall on weekends for the guys that can't, you know,
- 20:47Speaker 1: during the week. So yeah, we should be that's cool.
- 20:51Speaker 1: So with the hot weather is that? Does that make
- 20:54Speaker 1: water a scarcity or um? Is it? Are you okay there?
- 20:58Speaker 1: It doesn't seem like it. You have a lot of
- 21:00Speaker 1: ponds and we have a lot of lakes, streams. Uh,
- 21:04Speaker 1: it seems like waters everywhere. Um, I'll be honest, I
- 21:07Speaker 1: haven't focused a kind of on water in the past,
- 21:10Speaker 1: watering holes are building and anything like that, because I
- 21:13Speaker 1: just haven't seen much on water whenever on cameras on
- 21:17Speaker 1: water in the past. So immittally it's been, you know,
- 21:20Speaker 1: a few years since I've tried, but I just haven't
- 21:22Speaker 1: seen a huge, huge draw there. I feel you. I'm
- 21:25Speaker 1: the same way. Man Like water is. Water is tough
- 21:28Speaker 1: for me. I got a buddy, Tony, who knows a
- 21:30Speaker 1: lot about that stuff and tries to convince me all
- 21:32Speaker 1: the time that I need to be hunting on the
- 21:34Speaker 1: water hole. But it's tough for me, you know, even
- 21:36Speaker 1: hanging cameras, I don't see super consistency that that makes
- 21:39Speaker 1: me want to be there, you know. So No, no,
- 21:42Speaker 1: not to say that in different areas or different situations
- 21:45Speaker 1: that could be the ticket, but it doesn't seem like
- 21:47Speaker 1: it quits in our circumstance. What is the ticket right
- 21:50Speaker 1: now in New Hampshire? Um, I think the ticket is
- 21:54Speaker 1: Um finding. Well, I would say, given you're targeting your
- 22:01Speaker 1: chure back, which I know not every listeners, you know,
- 22:03Speaker 1: really focused on that, but we are, is finding one
- 22:06Speaker 1: of these deer and then trying to hone in on
- 22:08Speaker 1: exactly is like small pattern, because they're not moving terribly
- 22:11Speaker 1: far right now. So I think the biggest challenge right
- 22:14Speaker 1: now is finding one in this kind of the landscape
- 22:17Speaker 1: we hunting is big timber, lots of mountains, thousands of
- 22:21Speaker 1: thousands of eight or no eggs, so finding one can
- 22:23Speaker 1: be probably at least half the battle was locating where
- 22:26Speaker 1: that buck is in this this period of the season
- 22:29Speaker 1: and then, once you do, trying to get tight to
- 22:31Speaker 1: where's moving and manage your entry your exit. Um Manage
- 22:35Speaker 1: your wind and hunt them accordingly. We like to try
- 22:37Speaker 1: to hunt and focus on cold fronts. That seems like
- 22:40Speaker 1: that's the trigger that gets these mature deer moving in
- 22:42Speaker 1: daylight earlier in the season. Um, you know, it's tough
- 22:45Speaker 1: in the mountains to sit right on top of a
- 22:47Speaker 1: bed like you may and different, you know, different regions
- 22:52Speaker 1: of the country. A betting area maybe a thirty or
- 22:54Speaker 1: forty Acre area on the mountain rather than, you know,
- 22:57Speaker 1: one or two acres. So it's tough to kind of
- 22:59Speaker 1: calibrate how close you can get to that bed. So
- 23:01Speaker 1: if you're hunting in a bedding area, you have a
- 23:03Speaker 1: high probability of potentially bout me that here. So we're
- 23:05Speaker 1: trying to stay on the edge and what that means
- 23:07Speaker 1: is we may need a deer move a hundred yards
- 23:09Speaker 1: and we may need them to move five hundred yards.
- 23:11Speaker 1: So we're looking for those cold friends to get them
- 23:13Speaker 1: kind of out of that bedding area. You know, the
- 23:15Speaker 1: areas that we think are you know that they could
- 23:18Speaker 1: be in and moving. So that's kind of the ticket. Um.
- 23:21Speaker 1: As far as food sources, it seems like there's food
- 23:25Speaker 1: everywhere this time of year. We did have a great
- 23:28Speaker 1: hunt on a buck coming to a food plot, but
- 23:30Speaker 1: that's kind of the exception. We don't have many food
- 23:32Speaker 1: plots and we don't have many bag areas, so that,
- 23:35Speaker 1: I'd say the number one food source right now is
- 23:37Speaker 1: red oaks. You have at least an areas. We hunt
- 23:40Speaker 1: abundance of them. They're everywhere. As long as you have
- 23:43Speaker 1: some in the area, you're in good shape. I think
- 23:45Speaker 1: trying to identify like a feed tree is probably pretty
- 23:47Speaker 1: useless because we have thousands upon thousands of them pretty
- 23:51Speaker 1: evenly distributed across there is these deer in so if
- 23:54Speaker 1: you can find, you know, some of them in the
- 23:57Speaker 1: vicinity of where this buck side, now you're in good shape.
- 23:59Speaker 1: It's kind of like, okay, well, you know he's he's
- 24:02Speaker 1: in here, there's food. What do you think he's betting?
- 24:04Speaker 1: And then what we like to focus on is even
- 24:06Speaker 1: scrapes this time of yere close to it. You know
- 24:08Speaker 1: where we think is a betting here and food source
- 24:10Speaker 1: and hunt those scrapes because the most cold fronts hit,
- 24:13Speaker 1: triggers movement and they kind of hit those scrapes and
- 24:15Speaker 1: we can be in good buck, in good shape, I
- 24:17Speaker 1: should say. Man, this does sound like some pretty kilar
- 24:19Speaker 1: tactics there. If you were to look at the next
- 24:22Speaker 1: week upcoming, I know you mentioned that cold front is
- 24:24Speaker 1: kind of gonna hit here later in the week. What
- 24:27Speaker 1: would you product to the buck movement being like? In
- 24:29Speaker 1: a scale of one to team, I would say it's
- 24:32Speaker 1: probably again to be and we get some really good
- 24:35Speaker 1: weather coming in. I think it could be an eight
- 24:38Speaker 1: cos that's an exciting number. Yeah, no, it really is,
- 24:41Speaker 1: because you know, if if these bucks start to fall
- 24:44Speaker 1: under these ED fall into an early season pattern, um
- 24:48Speaker 1: you can get on him. And then we have these
- 24:50Speaker 1: temperatures which here I'm looking at like at the end
- 24:52Speaker 1: of this week we have highs in the little fifties.
- 24:55Speaker 1: That's below average for sure for this time of year. Um,
- 25:00Speaker 1: northwest winds, high pressure. Yeah, it could be really good
- 25:03Speaker 1: if you're in the right spot. If you're not on
- 25:04Speaker 1: the right spot, you're not on that deer. You'RE NOT
- 25:06Speaker 1: gonna YOU'RE gonna be crying. But if you you are,
- 25:09Speaker 1: you could be in the money. So that's on the
- 25:11Speaker 1: spot you could be it could be a could be
- 25:14Speaker 1: an eight plus. Yeah. Well, maybe, if you put your
- 25:16Speaker 1: work in and know where one is, it's a good
- 25:17Speaker 1: time to get in the woods there in New Hampshire. Brett,
- 25:19Speaker 1: we really appreciate it, man. I hope you have a
- 25:21Speaker 1: really great season. Thank you too, you guys as well.
- 25:38Speaker 1: Now we've got Jeff Danker from buck ventures. Jeff has
- 25:41Speaker 1: been doing some hunting over in Kansas. Jeff, how are
- 25:44Speaker 1: things going, man, well, we got a big buck in
- 25:47Speaker 1: the bike and we're heading home. So, Casey, I think
- 25:50Speaker 1: you're doing pretty good. It sounds sounds pretty skippy man.
- 25:53Speaker 1: That's cool. So, uh, how'd that go down? Man? You
- 25:56Speaker 1: were y'all seeing quite a bit of Buck Movement there
- 25:58Speaker 1: for the Kansas opener. Well, you know, we uh we
- 26:02Speaker 1: got some farms up there that we've been really babying
- 26:04Speaker 1: all year and actually for the last three or four years.
- 26:07Speaker 1: So great farm but um man, weather has really put
- 26:11Speaker 1: a damper on things and uh, you know, it wasn't
- 26:15Speaker 1: the regular type punt. We had to kind of adjust
- 26:17Speaker 1: on the fly. So so when you say baby and
- 26:19Speaker 1: what exactly you mean, well, I just man, I think
- 26:23Speaker 1: more I love shooting big deer, but I think I
- 26:25Speaker 1: love more than that. It is fixing up farms for
- 26:27Speaker 1: big deer and just having those you know, whitetail haven
- 26:30Speaker 1: type stuff. So just babying with food plots and, you know,
- 26:33Speaker 1: keeping out there, just keeping these deer, these these farms
- 26:36Speaker 1: just right for deer with water, food, everything that I
- 26:40Speaker 1: can do. Yeah, so you're you're and you're probably pretty
- 26:43Speaker 1: particular about what what are shot off that at that
- 26:46Speaker 1: farm right, like it's gotta be a certain age or
- 26:48Speaker 1: something like that. Man, absolutely, we're shooting definitely age on
- 26:51Speaker 1: on on what we call special deer. We do shoot
- 26:54Speaker 1: some four year olds of times that we think aren't
- 26:57Speaker 1: gonna be much Um, but other than that, yeah, we
- 27:00Speaker 1: definitely have a strict game player. So y'all Z owned
- 27:03Speaker 1: in on one of those special deer this past week,
- 27:05Speaker 1: I'd imagine. Can you tell us little bit about that? Well, so, basically,
- 27:08Speaker 1: we had, as we at this eight point last year,
- 27:10Speaker 1: there was probably a hundred forty years deer and he
- 27:12Speaker 1: was a five year open. Really we kind of had
- 27:14Speaker 1: him on the list to shoot him and he he
- 27:17Speaker 1: got by. You know, some of our guys went after
- 27:19Speaker 1: a different deer or whatever and uh, but he broke early,
- 27:22Speaker 1: got a fight, broke early, didn't think a lot of it,
- 27:25Speaker 1: but then he shed early and we're like man, what
- 27:28Speaker 1: happened to this deer and and all of a sudden
- 27:30Speaker 1: he comes back this year and he's got a big
- 27:31Speaker 1: old double main beam and junk going everywhere and just
- 27:35Speaker 1: turned into a brute Um. And so yeah, my dad
- 27:39Speaker 1: definitely picked him out and said, yeah, let's go see
- 27:41Speaker 1: we can kill him, and that's what we've been doing
- 27:43Speaker 1: this week. Man, that's cool. So you've mentioned the weather
- 27:46Speaker 1: a little bit earlier. How are the crops there in Kansas?
- 27:49Speaker 1: Is Is it a good year for crops? And Heaven
- 27:52Speaker 1: Whitetail Movement to agriculture? Well, so this is my ideal.
- 27:56Speaker 1: My thoughts on that is we we had a good spring.
- 27:59Speaker 1: We had some some Ain in the spring and end
- 28:01Speaker 1: up there. We're at, you know, around medicine lode in
- 28:04Speaker 1: that area. But then it went into the worst drought
- 28:07Speaker 1: we've ever seen. So crops, you know, we had some
- 28:10Speaker 1: good soy beans started and this NASS or deer, we're
- 28:13Speaker 1: getting some things. But uh now, guys, it's awful. It
- 28:17Speaker 1: is as bad as I've ever seen it. And and
- 28:19Speaker 1: again that's got me in a little bit of of
- 28:22Speaker 1: a whirlwind on on my stuff up there. I mean, basically,
- 28:25Speaker 1: we killed this deer. We we basically targeted water. Everything
- 28:30Speaker 1: was about water, Um, and and even you know, obviously
- 28:33Speaker 1: you can bait in Kansas and they're just not one corn.
- 28:37Speaker 1: It's a real weird deer guys, M man. So that
- 28:41Speaker 1: does count sound a little bit depressing, tell you the
- 28:44Speaker 1: truth of matter. I know it's tough sometimes, but it
- 28:46Speaker 1: makes it kind of fun, as long as the animals
- 28:48Speaker 1: are in good shape. You know, to to have challenges
- 28:50Speaker 1: like that come along. As you kind of look forward
- 28:53Speaker 1: this season, like in the next week or so, as
- 28:57Speaker 1: we have these openers. Happened across the country. You know,
- 28:59Speaker 1: Kansas just opened up. What do you predict dear movement
- 29:02Speaker 1: to be like and what are they going to be
- 29:04Speaker 1: focusing on? Well, if I was to predict that right now,
- 29:07Speaker 1: and I mean obviously, I looked at the fifteen day
- 29:09Speaker 1: forecast every day and Um, you know, I live by guys,
- 29:14Speaker 1: truly lived by Co Fronts, you know, drops and broometer
- 29:19Speaker 1: rises and when you get, I don't care if you
- 29:21Speaker 1: get a steady thirty two degrees, that thirty two degrees,
- 29:25Speaker 1: that just stays thirty degrees and it's the same day
- 29:28Speaker 1: every day. It gets hard to kill deer because it's
- 29:31Speaker 1: just a it's a it's hard to get a change.
- 29:33Speaker 1: And then you multiply that. When you get just a
- 29:36Speaker 1: you know obviously we're gonna be a hundred one up
- 29:38Speaker 1: there on Monday. I mean, when you get that kind
- 29:41Speaker 1: of stuff going on and it's and that's all it is.
- 29:43Speaker 1: When you look at fifteen days, it's just hot, hot,
- 29:46Speaker 1: hot and dry, hot, dry, hot, dry brometer staying the same.
- 29:49Speaker 1: So as long as that stays it's gonna be tough stuff.
- 29:53Speaker 1: I mean, you know you're sneaking in. I mean we
- 29:56Speaker 1: shot this deer in the morning. Usually this time year
- 29:58Speaker 1: weren I ain't hunting in the morning. We're, I can
- 30:00Speaker 1: weigh off the alfile fields and UM, getting these deer
- 30:03Speaker 1: right where they're fixing to lay down. Um. And so
- 30:08Speaker 1: again I'm hoping it'll snap out of it. When I
- 30:10Speaker 1: talked to all the farmers, you know they're looking at
- 30:12Speaker 1: the farmers farminact. You know they're predicting that it ain't
- 30:15Speaker 1: gonna rain and it's the first moisture room get up
- 30:18Speaker 1: in that area. You know, Fifteen, sixteen is Um snow,
- 30:23Speaker 1: and so you know, you don't know how much take
- 30:25Speaker 1: into that, but you sure want to listen to these
- 30:28Speaker 1: wise old farmers. You know, YEP, Yep, they've been there,
- 30:32Speaker 1: hadn't they? They they're they're all the all year long.
- 30:34Speaker 1: They kind of know what's going on in those areas.
- 30:37Speaker 1: You know, typically the farmers are good people for that
- 30:40Speaker 1: kind of thing. Did Uh now when you, when you
- 30:42Speaker 1: guys were able to shoot this deer? Was that? was
- 30:44Speaker 1: that based off of a uh, you know, a changing
- 30:47Speaker 1: weather pattern? No, it really was, and we just we
- 30:51Speaker 1: knew what the weather was gonna be. I mean a
- 30:53Speaker 1: lot of times when we're afterving and Biggins, we we
- 30:56Speaker 1: see that weather coming up and we leave alone, even alone,
- 30:58Speaker 1: and we don't hunt, hunt, you know. But I just
- 31:00Speaker 1: had a feeling that this deer was gonna come to water.
- 31:03Speaker 1: We had a big water tank out and we had
- 31:05Speaker 1: I hadn't checked his cameron about three weeks and but
- 31:08Speaker 1: last time I checked it. We we knew that he
- 31:10Speaker 1: was there a bunch and we knew that he was
- 31:12Speaker 1: laying down somewhere under grass there. And Uh, it was
- 31:15Speaker 1: a great access with a good wind. I mean that
- 31:18Speaker 1: was the key to this place, is is that? And
- 31:20Speaker 1: then could just slip in and getting the tree staying
- 31:22Speaker 1: there and that's what happened. They just we just had
- 31:25Speaker 1: a hunch and and hunting him again. You know, when
- 31:27Speaker 1: he hunt over bait or something like that, a lot
- 31:30Speaker 1: of times you put pressure on him real quick. But
- 31:32Speaker 1: when you're when you're hunting back and you ain't gotta
- 31:34Speaker 1: worry about coming into Bait in the morning and that
- 31:37Speaker 1: kind of stuff, and you're just going to get the
- 31:38Speaker 1: tree and that know that he probably won't be there
- 31:40Speaker 1: he's out on Halfi field for a while, you can
- 31:43Speaker 1: get by with some stuff. And that was just what
- 31:44Speaker 1: we were hoping and that's what happened, man. So going
- 31:47Speaker 1: forward for the next week, what are you protecting buck
- 31:49Speaker 1: movement being like on a scale from one to ten? Well,
- 31:53Speaker 1: I'm hoping right now bucks are real or staying real close.
- 31:57Speaker 1: You either got a big buck or you don't. You know,
- 31:59Speaker 1: you ain't getting a whole lot of new stuff showing
- 32:01Speaker 1: up yet. So I'm hoping that that'll start. You know,
- 32:04Speaker 1: we'll start kind of gathering some new bucks. But again,
- 32:07Speaker 1: with the weather, Um, you know, we're gonna sit here
- 32:10Speaker 1: on her thumbs a little bit at the House and
- 32:13Speaker 1: watch this weather and and you know that would I
- 32:15Speaker 1: if I was telling anyone if they had a big buck,
- 32:17Speaker 1: you know, be careful, you don't leave him alone and
- 32:20Speaker 1: let him feel comfortable and tell us time to go
- 32:22Speaker 1: kill him. And that's that's what we're fiction to do.
- 32:25Speaker 1: We're not going to get ahead of herself here and
- 32:27Speaker 1: see if this weather will come and take shape force
- 32:29Speaker 1: and maybe get a you know, a twenty degree drop somewhere,
- 32:32Speaker 1: and then we'll pounce. That's great, man. That's good advice. Jeff.
- 32:36Speaker 1: What's the best way for people to connect with you?
- 32:39Speaker 1: If they want to see what's going on? Check out
- 32:40Speaker 1: that big yeah, man, we have we've ramped up our youtube.
- 32:45Speaker 1: I'd love to tell everybody about our youtube. I mean
- 32:47Speaker 1: we've just started our youtube last year. You know, I
- 32:49Speaker 1: still have been done tell this for years, but our Youtube,
- 32:52Speaker 1: Bill we we you know, cocaine and heads that up
- 32:55Speaker 1: as a great editor and these acts of the guys
- 32:57Speaker 1: over my shoulder night e. A the time. so He's
- 33:00Speaker 1: running that. We're putting some good stuff out live. This
- 33:02Speaker 1: hunt will be out in just a few days. Um,
- 33:05Speaker 1: that we just talked about on it. You know, obviously
- 33:07Speaker 1: you come find me and Buck pincher's on instagram and
- 33:11Speaker 1: facebook and all that stuff. And we'd love to hear
- 33:13Speaker 1: from anyone. Awesome, man. Well, thanks for hopping on the
- 33:17Speaker 1: phone and giving us some advice there, and I'm sure
- 33:19Speaker 1: we'll talk to you some other time this year. Well,
- 33:22Speaker 1: Try Outer Casey, I'm sure if I appreciate you guys
- 33:25Speaker 1: and even thinking about me, and just know that I'm
- 33:27Speaker 1: here at any time, you aren't gonna Talk. We have
- 33:32Speaker 1: got grant forney with the everyday outdoorsman. Grant has been
- 33:36Speaker 1: hunting in Maryland, way up there in the northeast. Grant,
- 33:39Speaker 1: how are you doing, man? Pretty good. It's, uh, my
- 33:43Speaker 1: favorite time of the year, hunting season this year, so
- 33:46Speaker 1: I'm having fun getting my season started here. How about
- 33:49Speaker 1: you guys? We're doing good. We've been doing other things
- 33:52Speaker 1: than white tell lately. We've been doing elk and mule
- 33:54Speaker 1: hear and stuff, but got white telling the brain right now, Dude.
- 33:57Speaker 1: And you have already done the UN thing do well,
- 34:00Speaker 1: you've put a nice Maryland buck down and it ain't
- 34:02Speaker 1: even October yet. Man. How did that go? Yeah, it
- 34:06Speaker 1: was honestly an awesome hunt. I I couldn't believe it either,
- 34:10Speaker 1: to to put a buck down that early. This is
- 34:12Speaker 1: the earliest in the year that I've ever been fortunate
- 34:15Speaker 1: enough to take a book. So Um, yeah, it was
- 34:18Speaker 1: a really good, uh, really good early season hunt. Very
- 34:21Speaker 1: thankful to to kill a pretty good buck this early
- 34:24Speaker 1: in the season on public there in Maryland. Oh Dude,
- 34:26Speaker 1: that's awesome. I don't even realize I was on public grounds.
- 34:28Speaker 1: So this earlier in the year, do you see a
- 34:30Speaker 1: lot of hunter pressure there on public grounds? Yeah, yeah,
- 34:34Speaker 1: there's a pretty good amount of pressure, uh, on the
- 34:37Speaker 1: pieces of public that I hunt, especially opening weekend the
- 34:40Speaker 1: first two days. The first day of the season was
- 34:43Speaker 1: last Friday, so lots of guys in the woods Friday
- 34:47Speaker 1: and Saturday. So usually my strategy for that is, number one,
- 34:52Speaker 1: to try to get away from guys and number two,
- 34:56Speaker 1: to really try to be as close to betting areas
- 34:59Speaker 1: as I can be. H and that's kind of how
- 35:01Speaker 1: that's kind of how my hunt was on Saturday morning.
- 35:04Speaker 1: It was just a pretty classic example, I would say,
- 35:07Speaker 1: of a buck coming back off of food, heading back
- 35:12Speaker 1: to the betting area and uh, I was able to
- 35:15Speaker 1: catch him, you know, on his way back to bed. Uh.
- 35:19Speaker 1: The other thing I had going for me was just
- 35:22Speaker 1: a little bit of a cooler morning. It wasn't super cold.
- 35:25Speaker 1: I wouldn't really necessarily call it a cold front, but
- 35:29Speaker 1: that early in the year, if you can just get
- 35:31Speaker 1: like a morning that's just cool enough, especially because of
- 35:34Speaker 1: how hot of a summer we've had. Um, you know
- 35:37Speaker 1: the deer, the deer gonna be on the feet and uh,
- 35:40Speaker 1: that's what I had going for me Saturday morning. So
- 35:42Speaker 1: I got lucky and it worked out for me. Yeah,
- 35:44Speaker 1: that's that's dude. You put the pieces together and that
- 35:47Speaker 1: is awesome. I know that some of the other guys
- 35:49Speaker 1: we've talked to see you to be saying that weather,
- 35:51Speaker 1: it has played a huge part of what they're doing.
- 35:53Speaker 1: Do you foresee that whether being an issue like throughout
- 35:56Speaker 1: the season here? Is that something that's happening to you
- 35:58Speaker 1: up there in the northeast? Yeah, yeah, for sure it's. Um,
- 36:03Speaker 1: it's such a huge part of of the deer movement here,
- 36:06Speaker 1: as you know, I did, as I'm sure everywhere. But yeah,
- 36:09Speaker 1: it's a huge factor, I think. Um, you know here
- 36:13Speaker 1: in the early season, uh, the temperature is just it's
- 36:16Speaker 1: such a big deal. Of course, for me during Maryland,
- 36:20Speaker 1: the hunting pressure is also a big deal, but I'm
- 36:24Speaker 1: looking to get out on those days where the temperature
- 36:28Speaker 1: is uh is lower, you know, relative to uh the
- 36:32Speaker 1: days before or the days after it. This time of year,
- 36:34Speaker 1: that's really what I'm looking for. You know, I might
- 36:37Speaker 1: get a day or two of the week to hunt
- 36:39Speaker 1: and I'm gonna pick the day or two where the
- 36:42Speaker 1: temperature is is really looking the lowest. Pretty much the strategy.
- 36:47Speaker 1: So are there any like unique challenges or tactics that
- 36:52Speaker 1: you have for access during the early season that you
- 36:55Speaker 1: may not use as much during, you know, the Rut
- 36:58Speaker 1: or colder months? Yeah, I mean, nothing really too specific.
- 37:03Speaker 1: I would just say in general, like I'm very, very
- 37:09Speaker 1: much in tune and very cautious about my access this
- 37:11Speaker 1: time of year compared to what it would be during
- 37:14Speaker 1: the Rut. Uh, in the Rut, you know I'm really
- 37:18Speaker 1: not always careful, because you can just get away with
- 37:21Speaker 1: a lot more, I would say, but this time of year,
- 37:25Speaker 1: I mean like slipping in, slipping in there for a
- 37:28Speaker 1: morning hunt. Really my strategy for access. It's just to
- 37:31Speaker 1: try to to try to stay off of food on
- 37:35Speaker 1: my way in and then, even more specifically, not do
- 37:39Speaker 1: my best to not put my grounds in uh, on
- 37:43Speaker 1: the side of the tree where the deer are going
- 37:45Speaker 1: to be coming in from. Yeah, is that something that
- 37:47Speaker 1: you do? Is the ground set thing something you think
- 37:49Speaker 1: about much, or is that like a because you're sweating
- 37:52Speaker 1: this time of year going in? You're really really worried
- 37:55Speaker 1: about it? Yeah, yeah, for sure. This time of year,
- 37:58Speaker 1: even more worried about that. With H with the ground
- 38:01Speaker 1: sent Um, I really yeah, because of like long walks
- 38:05Speaker 1: in the heat, I'm sweating a lot. Uh, I'm really
- 38:09Speaker 1: not doing a lot for sent control for this style
- 38:14Speaker 1: of hunting this time of year. So, uh, you know,
- 38:17Speaker 1: I'm really paying attention to win direction on my access
- 38:21Speaker 1: and then and then, like we said, where I'm putting
- 38:24Speaker 1: my grounds and all my way into the tree. Yeah, man,
- 38:28Speaker 1: that totally makes sense. Whenever it's so hot, ground or
- 38:32Speaker 1: sink control kind of can be a moot point at
- 38:34Speaker 1: that at that point. So, Um, you were talking about
- 38:37Speaker 1: food sources quite a bit here. You're referring to agricultural
- 38:40Speaker 1: food sources or natural food sources. UH, some of both,
- 38:43Speaker 1: mostly agriculture. Uh. There's some skinning corn that butts up
- 38:49Speaker 1: to some of the public I hunt right now. That
- 38:51Speaker 1: you're hitting pretty good. And then, Um, there also is, yeah,
- 38:56Speaker 1: there also is some natural with the horns and crowds
- 38:59Speaker 1: right now. So, Um, the year that I killed on Saturday,
- 39:05Speaker 1: where he came from. He was probably actually coming off
- 39:07Speaker 1: the Bait Worns on his way back to bed. So Um,
- 39:12Speaker 1: you know, definitely some things to think about this time
- 39:14Speaker 1: of year. Yeah, man, that's awesome. So going forward, as
- 39:18Speaker 1: we look towards like the next week of hunting, you
- 39:20Speaker 1: know is uh, kind of the years starts to push
- 39:23Speaker 1: on and we swing from kind of the warmer temperatures
- 39:25Speaker 1: into the fall. What do you expect the buck movement
- 39:27Speaker 1: to be over the next week? I would say over
- 39:31Speaker 1: the next week it's gonna be. It's gonna be okay.
- 39:35Speaker 1: I would say, probably not as good as last week
- 39:38Speaker 1: because of, in my case, the Hind pressure that it
- 39:41Speaker 1: started to take effect on them, that opening weekend pressure,
- 39:45Speaker 1: but it should be. It should be okay. I think
- 39:48Speaker 1: if we can uh, you know, it got some cooler evenings,
- 39:51Speaker 1: which looks like we have some okay temperatures coming up,
- 39:54Speaker 1: it should be uh, it should be decent. You guys
- 39:57Speaker 1: want me to to yea, yeah, the ten. Yeah, so
- 40:01Speaker 1: if you were to, let me just say the question,
- 40:02Speaker 1: if you were to rate it on a scale of
- 40:05Speaker 1: one to ten. Looking forward. What you think that would be?
- 40:08Speaker 1: I would say I'll give it a six here for
- 40:12Speaker 1: this upcoming week versus maybe an eight last week got you.
- 40:18Speaker 1: So a little lower, but still definitely optimistic looking forward. Uh,
- 40:22Speaker 1: maybe with, you know, not quite as much pressure in
- 40:25Speaker 1: the woods because people are just not want to get
- 40:27Speaker 1: out there and hunt in the heat, I would imagine. Right. Yeah,
- 40:30Speaker 1: I would say, you know, the later part of the
- 40:33Speaker 1: week will be better as the hunting pressure starts to
- 40:35Speaker 1: tie off, but right here, early in the week, it
- 40:38Speaker 1: might be a little tougher because of the heavy hunting
- 40:40Speaker 1: pressure that we've seen here opening weeks. But I would
- 40:43Speaker 1: say optimistic towards the end of next week with the
- 40:47Speaker 1: hunting pressure starting to die down a little bit and
- 40:49Speaker 1: slightly cooler attempts coming in. Cool, cool man. So right
- 40:53Speaker 1: now you were actually headed to go hunt some more.
- 40:56Speaker 1: You're in a different state and we want to wish
- 40:58Speaker 1: you the best hunt of your eason right now. I
- 41:00Speaker 1: really appreciate you hopping on here to to talk and
- 41:03Speaker 1: kind of hope a little bit before you hit out
- 41:05Speaker 1: to the woods. If people want to see more of
- 41:07Speaker 1: what you got going on, what should they check out?
- 41:10Speaker 1: They can check out the everyday outdoorsman on Youtube, instagram
- 41:15Speaker 1: and facebook. Awesome Grant. Thanks. Hey, thanks a lot, guys.
- 41:19Speaker 1: To really appreciate it. Guys, is sounding like a great
- 41:24Speaker 1: week to get out in the woods and chase white tails,
- 41:27Speaker 1: if you have a season open, if you don't, or
- 41:29Speaker 1: if you do, it doesn't matter. Uh, and you're just
- 41:31Speaker 1: hope about some hunting. Guess what? There is a new
- 41:34Speaker 1: video on the element Youtube Channel. Our Buddy Tyler Jones
- 41:38Speaker 1: went to Colorado and shot a great, great buck up
- 41:42Speaker 1: in the high country. Super Tough, super emotional hunt, uh,
- 41:45Speaker 1: drama field, just all the stuff you want out of
- 41:47Speaker 1: a high country hunt. And then also on the meat
- 41:50Speaker 1: eator youtube feed as well, mark Kenyon's deer country episode
- 41:54Speaker 1: two is live, where he goes out with play nucom
- 41:57Speaker 1: and shoots a really awesome buck in the Arkansas Mountains.
- 42:00Speaker 1: This has been brought fresh radio. Y'All. Keep it fresh.
- 42:10Speaker 1: m
