- 0:00Welcome back to Fostering Faith. I'm going to
- 0:02be your host Tracie Foster. And in this episode,
- 0:05it has really just been part of something that's
- 0:09kind of been working in my brain. And so consistency,
- 0:13consistency, consistency, consistency with a
- 0:15diet, consistency with working out, consisting,
- 0:17you know, consistency showing up for your family,
- 0:19your friends, your job. I mean, consistency really
- 0:23is the key to success. I mean, If you want a
- 0:26business, you consistently have to work at it
- 0:29and improve. If you want your health, you have
- 0:31to consistently, you know, choose the better
- 0:33foods. If you want bigger muscles, you have to
- 0:35consistently, you know, lift weights and be stronger.
- 0:39If you want a better marriage, you have to consistently
- 0:41date your spouse. If you want, you know, to be
- 0:45better in most things, you have to consistently
- 0:48show up. And so I think that we are a society
- 0:52of just half -hearted... kind of show up whenever
- 0:55you want to, hope for the best, it's gonna be
- 0:57fine. And we're so inundated with trying to be
- 1:01perfect and have so many things in our lives
- 1:03that we cannot show up consistently for everything
- 1:06that is on our lives. And so we have to really
- 1:08prioritize what we really need to be consistent
- 1:12with. And so that's what brings me to this topic.
- 1:16And so welcome back to Fostering Faith. If you've
- 1:19not been here, I am Tracy. I'm your host. I am
- 1:21the mother of Gia, the wife of Derek, and just
- 1:25a person that is on fire for Jesus. I started
- 1:29back to school. I'm in seminary for a master's
- 1:33in theology and Bible study. uh and I just doing
- 1:37these podcasts just to to deepen my faith to
- 1:40show up consistently um and if you know me I'm
- 1:44consistent I'm consistent I will constantly show
- 1:46up if I say I'm gonna do something I'm gonna
- 1:47do it and I say no to a lot of things because
- 1:51I want to be consistent on what the things that
- 1:54are important to me and so the power of no to
- 1:58show up consistently for those for what is important
- 2:00and that way I don't overbook myself. I don't
- 2:03do things that I don't want to do. And I think
- 2:06that that's greatly important in a society that
- 2:10we live in because we want to be busy and we
- 2:11want to do all the things. But it's the power
- 2:14of no, I'm not doing that. That doesn't interest
- 2:16me. I don't want to do that. I don't want to
- 2:18be on that committee. I don't want to be on that
- 2:20board. I don't know. I don't want to do that.
- 2:23Thank you. And so. those that are returning,
- 2:27welcome back home. And today we're gonna be diving
- 2:30into a message that's been on my heart. And it's,
- 2:34are we living a part -time Christian life? Are
- 2:37we living a full -time Christians? And it's not
- 2:40about being perfect, but it's about being consistent.
- 2:42So ask yourself, what happens after we leave
- 2:45church on Sunday? Do we clock out on Jesus? Like
- 2:48the ship's over, hey, we're done, I'm out, see
- 2:50you next Sunday. Or do we carry him into our
- 2:54Monday or Tuesday and every day after? And so
- 2:58this episode is going to be real and we're going
- 2:59to be maybe convicting. And but it's also going
- 3:05to be freeing all at the same time. So let's
- 3:07be honest, it's easy to dress up and go to church
- 3:10on Sunday, raise your hands and even tie it in
- 3:12the bucket on Sunday. But what about Wednesday
- 3:14afternoon when your coworker kicks you off? What
- 3:17about Friday night when the pressure is on to
- 3:20go along with the crowd? A lot of us, if we're
- 3:23honest, treat Christianity like a part -time
- 3:25job. We're available when it fits into our schedule,
- 3:29but we clock off when life gets inconvenient.
- 3:33And James 1 .22 says, do not merely listen to
- 3:35what the world, so it deceives ourselves. Do
- 3:38what it says. In other words, being a Christian
- 3:42is not about clocking in and clocking out. It's
- 3:44about transformation. And that's what they said
- 3:47in class the other day. They were like, you know,
- 3:51seminary is not about grades. It's not about
- 3:53this. It's not about that. It's about a transformation
- 3:55that's going to happen to you while you walk
- 3:57with Jesus, while you sit with the Holy Spirit.
- 3:59It's about a transformation of your heart and
- 4:01your mind. And so I just think it's so important
- 4:04that we consistently show up. We will be changed
- 4:07from the inside out. And so what does full -time
- 4:11Christianity look like? Now, contrast that with
- 4:15being a full -time Christian. What does it mean
- 4:19when you're preaching on stage every day? It
- 4:21doesn't mean that you are perfect. It means your
- 4:27faith is integrated into every part of your life.
- 4:31As we have Colossians 3 .17 that says, whatever
- 4:33you do, whether in word or deed, do it in the
- 4:36name of the Lord Jesus. And that means whenever
- 4:39you're at work. Whenever you're on the ball field,
- 4:42whenever you're talking to your spouse, whenever
- 4:45you're scrolling on your phone, you're still
- 4:47a Christian. You're still called to reflect Christ.
- 4:52And that's what I tell my kids all the time is
- 4:54that you are a walking billboard for Christ.
- 4:56Whether you're on the basketball court, whether
- 4:59you're on the football field, you just you're
- 5:02here in youth now. That doesn't leave. You don't
- 5:04get to take off that hat. And so here's the kicker.
- 5:07The world's watching. The youth in your home
- 5:10are watching, your teammates, your co -workers,
- 5:12your neighbors. They're looking for consistency,
- 5:16not perfection, but authenticity. Full -time
- 5:19faith that says, my relationship with Jesus doesn't
- 5:23end when the benediction is given on Sunday morning.
- 5:28And so, for the youth that's listening, being
- 5:33a full -time Christian means standing up for
- 5:35what's right when your friends are gossiping.
- 5:37choosing to walk away from whenever temptation
- 5:40pulls, and daring to say, I follow Jesus, even
- 5:44if it costs me my popularity. And for the adults,
- 5:48it means leading with integrity at work, refusing
- 5:52not to cut corners, speaking kindness over criticism,
- 5:56prioritizing prayer at home, and not just in
- 5:59the pew. Think of it like sports practice. If
- 6:02you only show up on game day and never practice
- 6:05during the week, you're going to get smoked on
- 6:09the court. Someone's gonna break your ankles
- 6:11for the kids out there. And the same with your
- 6:14faith. If you live and only do it on Sundays,
- 6:21you will crumble when life throws pressure your
- 6:23way because you've not trained. You've not been
- 6:26consistent. You don't know what's in the scriptures.
- 6:29Jesus doesn't call us to do part -time discipleship.
- 6:32In loop 923, it says, whoever wants to be my
- 6:35disciple must deny themselves and take up their
- 6:38cross daily to follow me. The word daily. That's
- 6:45full time Christianity. And so let's dive a little
- 6:48deeper. And you have Paul in Romans 12, one that
- 6:51says, it calls us to offer our bodies as a living
- 6:55sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. This is
- 6:58your true and proper worship. sacrifice is not
- 7:02part time. It doesn't come off the altar when
- 7:05things get hard. That's what makes this call
- 7:09super radical. Karl Barth once said that faith
- 7:13does not part shape the whole of life, is no
- 7:19faith at all. Let's repeat that. So Karl Barth,
- 7:24a known theologian, and says that Faith that
- 7:27does not shape the whole of your life is not
- 7:31faith at all. Tim Mackey from The Bible Project.
- 7:34And if you've not listened to The Bible Project,
- 7:36go read it. Go listen to it. It is great, great,
- 7:39great. If you're going to study a chapter or
- 7:43a book, go watch the videos first and let him
- 7:47explain it to you. And then go and read. And
- 7:52it just makes the whole book. Just come alive.
- 7:55And so Tim Mackey from the Bible Project explains
- 7:58it this way. The biblical word for faith is E
- 8:01-M -U -N -A -H. Enuma. It is not an intellectually
- 8:08agreement, but a covenant of loyalty. This means
- 8:13that you're not nodding your head at a sermon.
- 8:15You're aligning your life to the God who saved
- 8:19you. Theologically, when we treat Christianity
- 8:22as a part time, We reduce God to an accessory
- 8:27instead of the Lord of our life. But Jesus isn't
- 8:30interested in being an accessory. He's king.
- 8:35He is the king that rules every part of your
- 8:38life. And so how can we actually do this? How
- 8:43can we put this into practice every day? One,
- 8:47start your morning off with Him. Before you check
- 8:49your phone, check in with God. Two, Integrate
- 8:54prayer into your daily routine, not just before
- 8:57meals, but in the car, in the shower, in between
- 9:01classes, in between meetings, in every aspect
- 9:05of your day. I mean, just whenever anything goes
- 9:07good. I mean, whenever you hear something, instead
- 9:10of texting your friend, go to God with it. Three,
- 9:14live accountable. Find a brother or sister who
- 9:16is willing to check in with you and not just
- 9:19about church attendance, but about your walk
- 9:22with Jesus. Four, guard your inputs. What you
- 9:27watch, what you listen to, what you scroll, it
- 9:31shapes your output. A full -time Christian filters
- 9:33everything because we have to guard our gates
- 9:36through the lenses of Christ. Five, embrace consistency
- 9:40over perfection. Don't give up whenever you fail.
- 9:44Repent, reset, and try it again. And that's full
- 9:48-time faith. And so let me leave you with this.
- 9:52Are you a part -time Christian? Are you a full
- 9:54-time Christian? When the music stops, when the
- 9:57sermon ends, when Monday morning chaos begins,
- 10:00are you still carrying Jesus with you? Or did
- 10:03you clock out Sunday at 1130? Jesus gave his
- 10:07whole life for us. The least that we can do for
- 10:10him is give our whole life back, and not just
- 10:13out of obligation, but out of love. And so I
- 10:17would love to pray for you today. Dear Heavenly
- 10:19Father, thank you so much for these listeners.
- 10:21Thank you so much for this day. I pray today
- 10:23that we will choose you, that we choose to live
- 10:27a full -time life, a life of sacrifice, everyday
- 10:32disciples, because whenever we do, the world
- 10:35won't hear the gospel on Sunday and see you all
- 10:39week long. Thank you for consistency. Thank you
- 10:41that you always show up for us and that we will
- 10:43always show up for you. Thank you for all that
- 10:45you do. In Jesus name I pray. Amen. Thanks so
- 10:50much for joining us today on Fostering Faith.
- 10:52I just encourage you, share it with a friend.
- 10:54And remember, faith isn't just part -time, it's
- 10:57a lifestyle. And so we love you guys. Have an
- 11:00amazing week.
