- 3:17Welcome to again, big lea pig lea Wigglely hotline three zero four three four

- 3:24five zero zero eight. Last week, the Kanawa County Board of Education met
- 3:29during their regular meeting and they were asked to name someone to lead the board
- 3:32as in being president of the board, and they chose Rick Cavner, longtime
- 3:36member of the board, and he joins us now in the par of Marstore
- 3:38studio. Richard, good morning, welcome to the show Mourning. David.
- 3:42You congratulations, I think I think yeah, sure, No, it's great.
- 3:46I'm excited. I know you are. I know you are. But
- 3:49anytime you're your time. I mean you've been how long have you been on
- 3:52the board. I mean you just got reelective, but how long you been?
- 3:53Was elected third term SOS my eighth year. Okay, yeah, so
- 3:58so how does it, I mean, explain the process of becoming the president
- 4:01of the board, how exactly does that? So it is a that they
- 4:04all go not me, not me, not it, not it, no,
- 4:08no, no, I mean every two years, every election year effectively
- 4:11that we have which we have it, we have someone is being elected from
- 4:15to the board every two years right at that July meeting, whenever that first
- 4:18July meeting, we are required to nominate and elect a president to serve two
- 4:23years. And the president's role and of course the president pro ten which is
- 4:26like the vice president, which is what I just was, and really our
- 4:29role is to lead the meetings. Obviously you get the gable, get the
- 4:32gabble. I don't know if I'm going to use the gavel or not.
- 4:34We were joking about that. We do have a gavel there, but no
- 4:36one that really used it. I've been there. Yeah, I think you
- 4:40should. I think you should think that if things get like maybe unruly,
- 4:44I could use it, but never really maybe a bullhorn, yeah, imagine
- 4:47that. I don't I don't think I'm the bullhorn president, say, I
- 4:50don't. I don't think you. I don't think you need that. So
- 4:53so why do you do this. I mean, you have a you have
- 4:56a job as executive director of Charleston Urban Works. Folks do fine, fine
- 5:00work. Your full time dad involved in ten thousand other different things in the
- 5:04community. Why do you serve on a border education? That's a good question.
- 5:09I mean, I you know, and I think when I've been on
- 5:11before, I made the joke that so many people when I see the mouth,
- 5:13they'll say, you know that that's got to be such a thankless job.
- 5:15I think that's sort of the reputation that we have as board members is
- 5:17that it's like this thankless role. Right. For me, it's not.
- 5:21And I can understand when people think that, because I mean, we're elected.
- 5:25We don't run the daily operations of the school system. That's up to
- 5:28the superintendent, that says or her role, right, and you know,
- 5:31our job is to oversee the superintendent, right as any other corporate board does
- 5:35with their executive director or the CEO, and to be that sort of link
- 5:40with you know, between the community and the school system, right that that's
- 5:44why the people elect us to be that link. And I've never really I've
- 5:48enjoyed that role because and I think it's a personality thing right, Like,
- 5:51if you enjoy talking to people, you enjoy being out and you know,
- 5:57connecting with folks, you can really enjoy this role. So I've never once
- 6:00woken up been like, God, what am I doing? It has never
- 6:02been me. Now, I could see why some people think that, because
- 6:04we do get blamed for things that aren't that aren't our fault, right,
- 6:08because so much, you know, so many policy related issues are at the
- 6:13state level. Right, we can set our own policies with you know,
- 6:15we are a subdivision of the state. We can set our own policies as
- 6:19long as it is in line with the state. But at the end of
- 6:21the day, there's just some stuff that we can't control, and we're the
- 6:25ones at the county level. Those local folks sometimes get blamed. So for
- 6:28those reasons, I can see what people think it's not a great role.
- 6:30But I think and we get along so well, the five board members here
- 6:34in Kannall County, and it's we never really have those issues. It's been
- 6:39really enjoyable, and it's not always that way. I know, you're friends
- 6:42with BOE members across the state of West Virginia, and you know, everybody
- 6:46tries to get along. But again, you're talking about five people, You're
- 6:48talking about five personalities, five different ideologies. It doesn't have to run as
- 6:54smoothly, and it doesn't sometimes, sadly enough, run as smoothly as what
- 6:59it does in can On County. That's right now. I would like to
- 7:00think that we set a really good example for how you do operate as a
- 7:03board. You know, we've all said this a thousand times. The final
- 7:06of us don't always agree on everything, but we respect one another and we
- 7:11always, at the end of the day come back with the final result,
- 7:14which what is best for the students and the faculty and the administrators of Okenwall
- 7:18County. Talking to Rick Cavnar again, the President of the Kanaw County Board
- 7:21of Education. Of the day Island Show in five Any Live brought to you
- 7:24apart by Pinnacle Consultants. Poor indoor air quality can cause a variety of health
- 7:29issues, including allergies, respiratory problems, and more. Pinnacle offers specialized indoor
- 7:32air quality services for resident decline. And as long as we promise not only
- 7:36our voters, but every constituent, every student, every faculty member, every
- 7:41administrator in the county that we're going to be good stewards of their tax dollars,
- 7:45their property tax dollars that they pay every year. We have to make
- 7:47those difficult decisions sometimes. I want to talk about Rick about public schools in
- 7:53general. You know, we have more and more parents nationwide that are choosing
- 7:58alternative means of educating their kids outside the public school system, from private schools
- 8:03to homeschooling, to charter schools, you know, you name it. The
- 8:07number of quote unquote again this is a nationwide thing. The number of quote
- 8:11unquote non traditional schools for lack of a better term, seem to be going
- 8:16up or these parents are choosing other options. But what's your take on that?
- 8:20How do you guys fix this? You know, I think that some
- 8:24of that is if, if I'm being frank, is due to misinformation.
- 8:28I think that there is definitely there is these voice There are these voices out
- 8:33here that claim that and not even really focus on education, focused on like,
- 8:37you know, what our students are being what they're hearing in their schools,
- 8:41and what they're being taught in public school and whatnot. And there's a
- 8:45lot of misinformation out there about what what's occurring in the schools. And that's
- 8:48I think getting some parents worried and afraid and maybe wanting them wanting to see
- 8:54them go have their children go to to other education of other means. Now,
- 9:00as far as what's happened here in West Virginia over the past whatever four
- 9:03years with the with the creation of charter schools in West Virginia, I'm personally
- 9:07and i've been I have made public statements on this in the past, I'm
- 9:11as far as West Virginia is concerned, and the way again back to our
- 9:13population, I don't think charter schools can really really work in you know,
- 9:20a long term setting, you know. But in as far as being a
- 9:24public school board member, it's not great because those public tax dollars are still
- 9:28being in part paying we're paying to help fund these schools that have absolutely we
- 9:33have no jurisdiction over whatsoever, and they create their own charter, they create
- 9:37their own bylaws, they have full control over what they're doing, and we're
- 9:41still having to give them money. We're talking right now, Dave. We've
- 9:43we budgeted over eight hundred thousand dollars that will be funneled through us to go
- 9:48directly to charter schools for this coming for this coming school year. For our
- 9:50budget year, that equals, you know, about ten teacher positions that we
- 9:56may have to turn around and cut or move in some way because of those
- 10:01funds that we are required to have to give to charter school. So excuse
- 10:05me. I have my own personal sort of philosophical feelings on that, you
- 10:11know. But parents do have the right to educate their kids how they see
- 10:15fit. I grew up with some homeschool kids and they went on to do
- 10:16some great things. You know, it really is up to the individual parent.
- 10:20But I do believe that our public schools have a whole lot to offer
- 10:24a lot of programming Here in Kannall County. We have a lot of programming
- 10:28to prepare students, not just for if they decide to go to a four
- 10:31year university, but also if they decide to go into a trade or if
- 10:35they decide to go directly into the workforce. There really is something for every
- 10:39student in Kannall County, and we have really great people leading those programs.
- 10:43We have great virtual programs for maybe those kids who don't do well in a
- 10:46in an in person setting. We have a wonderful the Model Virtual program for
- 10:50the State of West Virginia so there's a lot of options out there, and
- 10:54so I do want to I want people to keep that in mind when they're
- 10:56making those decisions. They have a text before we let you go. It
- 10:58says speak consolidation. Can you ask Rick if he thinks we really need fifty
- 11:03five full boards of education in the small state seems very top heavy with fifty
- 11:07five high paid superintendent said administration. I know you can't speak, you know,
- 11:11to anything beyond Kanawha County, but this is an argument, or at
- 11:18least a statement that's been put out there from time to time by people.
- 11:20Do you care to comment on that I've heard. I've heard this argument,
- 11:24and I've been posed this question several times. And you know, if you
- 11:28take a step back and look at the whole state, and you know,
- 11:30you've probably seen some of those studies, those hypotheticals where people will, you
- 11:33know, they'll this idea of like you know, meshing three or four counties
- 11:37together to create larger metropolitan statistical areas, right, which then will be good
- 11:41for economic development purposes, right, because if you have more more condensed,
- 11:45more folks in a condensed area, that you can then sort of tout as
- 11:48one county versus three separate counties with three separate count of commissions or three separate
- 11:50boards of education, or whatever the case is. There could be other opportunities
- 11:56economically speaking, business development speaking, that could be beneficial. So I've I've
- 12:00looked at both sides of those of those arguments, both of those those viewpoints.
- 12:03As far as how we are set up in West Virginia, we are
- 12:07one of the few county or excuse me states left in the in the country
- 12:11that still operates in a county of just a full county school countem right.
- 12:13Usually you see like independent school districts or school district the state of Ohio,
- 12:16for example, I've spent when I when I was in Ohio. You know,
- 12:20you have county schools and then you have city schools, different superintendents,
- 12:24different different boards or commissions or whatever you call it. Funding is set up
- 12:28differently all that. Yes, so we are sort of, I guess you
- 12:31would say, sort of still in that archaic old school county school system set
- 12:35up. But again, as you mentioned, that is a state decision.
- 12:39I think as long as we are set up to be county school systems,
- 12:41I'm very proud to be a county board member here in Kanaal, we definitely
- 12:43have one of the best superintendents, probably not in the state, but in
- 12:46the in the country. Well, Rick, class Act. I've known you
- 12:48for some time, man, I know you're doing good things out there.
- 12:50I appreciate you being here. Any final words that you want to say before
- 12:54we leave. I ought to say thank you to my fellow board members for
- 12:56electing any president it's you know, and the voters too, because they just
- 12:58put you a statements. Thank the voters for coming out strong and choosing to
- 13:03keep me for another four years. It definitely means the world to me.
- 13:07So yeah, thank you and thank you Dave for having me on. I

- 16:17are the colleges not teaching our future teachers how to teach reading? Or
- 16:21are the textbook companies controlling the teaching method It's a Texter, Uh, you
- 16:26know. I love to talk to the folks from the Allen Creek Alliance.
- 16:30I have a big event coming up this Saturday at the Washington District Community Center
- 16:33out at Samplant. Chrissy ballas with the group. She joins us now via
- 16:37the Bigley Piggly Wiggly houtline Chris in good morning, welcome back to the show.
- 16:41Good morning day, Thanks for having me, appreciate it, Thank you
- 16:42for being here. Have a good fourth Yes, had a wonderful force is
- 16:47relaxing time. Saw some good fireworks and ate some good food. So back
- 16:49to the grinds. That's what that's what it's all about now, Chris,
- 16:52even on several times in the past. But for people who may not know
- 16:56exactly what is this alliance? Is Allen Creek Alliance. Yeah, So Allen
- 17:00Creek Alliance more about community development within Allen Creek. So we do blood drives
- 17:07fundraisers. Our mission is to improve community access to health, nutrition, social
- 17:11and recreation services in Allen Creek area. So we aim to enhance a well
- 17:17being of residents while also providing essential resources and fostering those community connections. And
- 17:22how did a lot of fundraisers coming up? Well, I was going to
- 17:25say, how did this whole thing come about? How did you get involved
- 17:27in it? I've been involved with Allen Creek Alliance now for a couple of
- 17:32years. So my aunt Laura mark Er, she's been affiliated with Allen Creek
- 17:37for many, many years. They go way back, and she actually was
- 17:40able to get me involved because I'm interested in community involvement. But it's a
- 17:44great organization there. For a while when COVID hit, we were not joining
- 17:48a lot of things, but since then we have grown now and we're out
- 17:52and about in the community and we want people to learn and know about what
- 17:56we're doing here to help enhance resources that we want to do. And then,
- 18:00as you know, the Washington Just Community Center building is now complete,
- 18:04which that's where we host most of our even I don't want to talk about
- 18:07that because it's a I've never been in it, but I have driven by
- 18:11it several times and it's uh. If you're if you're in the general vicinity
- 18:15around South Ridge, I know that you've seen it several times on sand Planet.
- 18:18It's a it's a great looking facility. It is. It's awesome and
- 18:22inside it's amazing. It's pretty nice. We have a kitchen. There's also
- 18:26basketball, so during the day anyone can go in and play basketball hoops.
- 18:32They are open to the public from nine to seven. You go in,
- 18:34there'll be a gentleman day or where you sign in and so you can do
- 18:38that. We're looking at later on expanding maybe I adding some pickleball and volleyball
- 18:42later, but now you can do there's awesome basketball hoops in there. Or
- 18:45you can even walk even if you want to do some walking indoor because it's
- 18:48so hot outside right now. Anyone is welcome to go inside and you can
- 18:52actually do some laps around the court. And it's open to the public.
- 18:56I mean, anybody can use it or anybody that does what you're telling me
- 19:00exactly. Yeah, you can come in for open gym that is what we
- 19:03call it, so open gym during the day for those types of things.
- 19:06If you're interested. You can host birthday parties, private events, but that
- 19:11is actually through the City of South Charleston, not through Allankirk Creek a line.
- 19:15You can do that by reaching out to the City of South Charleston and
- 19:18making those connections with them to schedule your event. Then the lot presented in
- 19:22part by General Hardware, Windfield and Milton and General number of Winfield all projects
- 19:26big and Small Day can help you out and shop locally. Visit General Hardware
- 19:30WV dot com. All right, you got a big event going on this
- 19:33Saturday, talk about it. Yeah, So we have a community yard Selle.
- 19:37It's going to be inside and outside, So it's going to be this
- 19:41Saturday from seven to twelve. We will have two sessions and you can come
- 19:45and shop and grab a bite to eat. We'll have some biscuits and some
- 19:49eggs biscuits and some sausage biscuits. And also though we are still accepting people
- 19:55if you want to interested in renting a booth, so you can rent outside
- 19:59or inside at si dollars. Outside it's twenty dollars for inside. We do
- 20:03have tables right now. We do have people still available. Its needs to
- 20:07be that we can provide to those who need them. So now, are
- 20:11you looking for primarily just people that just want to you know, like like
- 20:15you know, yard sale type stuff, you're looking for people to do food
- 20:18I mean, or just open to anybody that wants to get a booth right
- 20:21or yes, mainly yard sale stuff, okayel people who want to rent a
- 20:25booth, because we still have availability for booth rentals. So we're still looking
- 20:30to help facilitate that with people renting some booths because we do have that available.
- 20:33But if you're interested just to come and shop and check out the community
- 20:37center, you can do that as well. And you folks have done things
- 20:41like this in the past. I mean as far as you know, you've
- 20:44done you've done different different yard sales, inside out and whatever you want to
- 20:47call it. You've you've done this in the past, and you've been pretty
- 20:48successful with them. We have, yet we've been real successful. Yeah.
- 20:52Absolutely, we always have a good crowd come in. Especially, Hey,
- 20:56when you have yard tails and food, you can't beat it. So yeah,
- 20:59we usually have a good crowd come in for both people coming into shopping
- 21:03off of people participating. We do have I like to mention coming up a
- 21:07blood drive American Red Cross will be in the Washington District Community Center July thirtieth
- 21:12from one to six. Okay, interested in that as well. And I
- 21:15can tell you from having talked about blood drives on the radio for the past
- 21:18thirty some odd years, summertime tends to be and I'm not an expert,
- 21:23but tends to be one of the times that the blood donations normally have a
- 21:27tendency to go down because people are thinking vacations, they're eventually thinking back to
- 21:32school, They're thinking all these different activities and festivals and so on and so
- 21:34forth. Sometimes they don't think about giving blood. So you're giving people an
- 21:38opportunity to do that again on the thirtieth. Is that what you said,
- 21:41Yes, July thirtieth, one to six. All right, So if people
- 21:45are listening right now and they say, hey, I want to get a
- 21:48booth, what's the time frame here? I mean, is there a cutoff?
- 21:49I mean, do you have so many slots available? What do you
- 21:52got? Yeah, so we have flots available. We're still taking floods.
- 21:56A cutoff time will be Friday. You can set up Friday evening the night
- 22:00before if you don't want to come early Saturday and set up. So we

- 24:02tomorrow I've asked john to stop by the studios to kind of talk about it

- 25:02I mentioned earlier in the show kind of preview, and I'm going to get
- 25:06into a little bit later on. We are going to talk to Brian Hughes
- 25:07about Regatta. Here momentarily, but I did mention the fact that the calls
- 25:12are coming out for President Biden to drop out of the race. There's been
- 25:18at least five to six well high ranking folks in Washington that have come out
- 25:23and said it is time for him to withdraw from the race. And as
- 25:27soon as I mentioned it, I got a text. So I'm going to
- 25:30read this text and we'll go to break and I'll get back into this a
- 25:33little bit later on the show. Texas, If you're calling for Biden to

- 26:07That was a quote. Look what I'm talking about here, though, is
- 26:11coming from Democrats. You're not going to hear a heck of a lot of
- 26:17Democrats say well, I think Trump should stay in the race. I mean
- 26:19they didn't want him there to begin with. And a whole lot of Republicans
- 26:22didn't want Trump there to begin with. Not enough, in my opinion,

- 29:56Now, Brian, good morning, Well, good pointed, Dave. You
- 30:00still gotta regot it. I said that earlier. I was talking to Rick
- 30:03Cavanter and I said, I think this was off the air. I was,
- 30:07and I was going to say the words you got and Regott. It
- 30:08just came out. You know, it's like you gotta Regot. I didn't
- 30:11mean to say you got it, Regott. It. I turned on my
- 30:14TV, as I do every morning, Brian. I turned on my TV
- 30:17when I get out of bed and I'm having my coffee and turn on my
- 30:18TV, and there you are on television. I thought, I thought,
- 30:22surely that you would at least take a day off. Have you had any
- 30:26sleep in all of the last couple of days for the entire event, I
- 30:30pretty much slept two to two and a half hours each night. I mean
- 30:33then if I would try and take a mid day short nap, I would
- 30:37get phone calls the entire time. So my watchtow man slipped six hours last
- 30:41night. I don't believe it. You're not as young as you used to
- 30:44be, Brian. You know you know that right well, you know,
- 30:48the mayor and I were discussing it. It just feel like it's just it
- 30:52was tougher this year. But you know, we pulled it off, and
- 30:55that's what matters. Could we call it a success in your in your in
- 30:59your eyes? Absolutely we we we believe it was a round uh just a
- 31:04round success across the board. And you know what what we've looked at is
- 31:10we've looked at it, you know, just just eyeballing it. Attendance for
- 31:14each night and such. And the only one that we had that we were
- 31:17lower was on the country music night. We don't think it was particularly because
- 31:19of music. And he had to be thunderstorm watched it had been issued,
- 31:22storms were threatening earlier in the day and and uh, and plus the humiditative
- 31:26just through the roof that day, So you know, I think that had
- 31:30some factors in it. But you know, collectively, this was great.
- 31:33Talking to vendors, a number of them who've been with us all three years,
- 31:37we're talking about your numbers were roughly fifty percent higher than what they had
- 31:41been in the prior years. And uh, you know, I was talking
- 31:45with Tim Beavers over a corporate identity and uh and he said, man,
- 31:49on Saturday, he said he was slammed. They had to pull in extra
- 31:53people. He said he was a He said it was as guy quote bunkers,
- 31:57so bokers knockers. Yeah, that's that's a quote. When you were
- 32:04on the show, and I had the mayor on the show, and I
- 32:06even had Tim Brady others on the show. We talked about and this goes
- 32:09with any event, Brian. It's like, you know, year one,
- 32:13when it came back, you're kind of learning what you're doing, Okay.
- 32:15Year two you're usually trying to clean up the messes and things you did wrong
- 32:20in year one. That this is true of any event, not just forgot
- 32:22it. Year three is the pivotal year. Though this was the pivotal year
- 32:27because you had two years under your belt. And again based on everything that
- 32:30I have seen and everybody that I've talked to, you know, the city
- 32:34and you guys knocked it down the park again well, and we greatly appreciate
- 32:38that, you know, And we were even even going in about two weeks
- 32:44a month to two weeks before, we were starting to write down things that
- 32:46need to be fixed for twenty twenty five and and so we've got a number
- 32:51of those things. And actually, you know, with our sponsorship packages,
- 32:54U you know, we've had a number of people said I want to be
- 32:58a sponsor. Now you know, it took them three years to say I
- 33:00want to do this or I want to do more, and so you know,
- 33:04we're going to have those out, you know, within the next month
- 33:07going into twenty twenty five, and we're already discussing, you know, August
- 33:10into September, getting these bookings finalized early for concerts and stuff, because once
- 33:16we can secure you know, some of those sponsorship dollars when we're looking at
- 33:22nonprofit moneies that that people are donating things of that nature, if we can
- 33:27do those starting in August in September, a lot of those budgets are finalized
- 33:30by October, you know, then we have you know, a basis for
- 33:34where we need to be at certain levels. But we think we're in really
- 33:38good shape going into twenty twenty five and two next years. You know,
- 33:44I think it's going to settle up as a thirty Thursday, Friday, Saturday
- 33:46Sunday event, you know. And here's the thing there and Mayor have talked
- 33:52about it, you talked about on the show in the past two Brian.
- 33:54I mean, everybody remembers the heyday of Regatta back around Labor Day, and
- 34:00that's one of the complaints that we get is, you know, back in
- 34:01the day it was also a ten day festival. People say, well,
- 34:04why isn't it later because so many people have vacations in and around the fourth
- 34:08of July it's you know, typically you're a weather guy. Typically you know
- 34:13it's oppressive heat and so on and so forth. I think the Mayor brought
- 34:16up a really good point. This was, you know, back when I
- 34:19was in school, back back in the old days. You know, school
- 34:22started the start of the day after Labor Day. It's not that way now
- 34:25in most areas. August fifteenth, sixteenth or whatever, kids are back in
- 34:30school. And so that's going to cut into that's going to cut into it
- 34:34a little bit. But I'll let you speak to that and from the reg
- 34:37from the Stern Wheelers perspective as well, because that's something you know a lot
- 34:39about. Yeah, So when it was, when it was, the event
- 34:44was terminated when the Stern Wheelers left. And you know, and on that
- 34:46Labor Day way back when I say way back when, in about two thousand
- 34:52and seven, thousand and eight, you know, everybody else filled in the
- 34:57gap, and point pleasant took over labor a weekend. And while put pleasants
- 35:00tribute to the river, it's not a big event. It's a pivotal event.
- 35:05You know, it's you get to you get to essentially go almost halfway
- 35:08to Marietta. And it was you know, and stopped there for a weekend.
- 35:13So that occurred, and we'd even discussed briefly, just briefly about maybe
- 35:19could we negotiate Labor Day weekend with Mary with a point pleasant it just didn't
- 35:24make sense because you're right, schools start now middle of August now, some
- 35:29of them even almost nearly the second versus almost second week of August. You've
- 35:32got college football that you know, back then two thousand and seven eight,
- 35:39you know, they weren't starting as early as they are now. Now you've
- 35:42got you know, games or even a weekend before Labor Day. So all
- 35:46that being said, the attendance just wasn't going to be There would have been
- 35:50a touch schooler probably, but you know, that's just where we had to
- 35:53conte do do are people making the changes in their vacation plans out? Yes,
- 36:00I'm run into a number of people, my uh, my doctor,
- 36:04my primary care position. She said, we can't leave on July fourth anymore
- 36:07because my son wants to be here for Regatta with all his friends. And
- 36:13I've heard a number of parents talk about that, that their kids do not
- 36:16want to leave July fourth weekend. Now, uh, you almost to the
- 36:20point that they don't want to go to the family vacation, Well, who
- 36:22does want to go on the family give it us beside the point exactly,
- 36:27because you never want to be with your with your parents the whole time on
- 36:29a family vacation. But but they but they like this here. So you
- 36:32know what we have and actually the mayor brought this up, you know,
- 36:35a few years ago. We're gonna try this and if it works, people
- 36:38will start changing their holiday bay holiday vacation plans and they'll stick around here because
- 36:44for one thing, it is a vacation and the same you don't have to
- 36:46pay for lodging, you don't have to leave, and you're gonna they're gonna
- 36:50spend a lot of that vacation money right here in town and that's gonna help
- 36:53everybody, the collective, whole businesses, everyone. It's amazing what a dollar
- 37:00will do here in town. With Regatta talking to Brian Hughes before we let
- 37:05you go, Brian, there was a couple of points I wanted to bring
- 37:07up. One of the things that I noticed in uh and doing a lot
- 37:12of the social media that I do for myself, and one of the other
- 37:15stations here in the building was I was constantly monitoring the social media of the
- 37:19city and Regatta and so on and so forth. The number of people that
- 37:22commented and said, I've never been to this event before, how do I
- 37:28do this? Or where's the best place to see this concert? Or where's
- 37:31the best place for this? Because I've never been there before. That's what
- 37:36that bringing this whole thing was about. I mean, you know, obviously
- 37:39we want to take care of the locals we wanted off, but we also
- 37:42want to get heads in beds. As Tim Brady would say, we want
- 37:45to get people here from out of town. And when you see people posing
- 37:49these questions, Brian and saying, you know, I've never I've never been
- 37:52here before, Where's the best place for this, where's the best way?
- 37:54I saw a whole lot of that on social media traffic. Brian. You
- 37:58know what we did too, And I'm glad you say that, because obviously
- 38:02I'm monitoring a lot of social media, have to do my own and everything
- 38:05else. And you sell a lot of people who said I wanted to go
- 38:09down there, but I just I just couldn't. But I really think I
- 38:13want to be there now, And you're right, they're asking a few those
- 38:15questions, and you know, we've got there there. I think about eight
- 38:20to ten of us that monitors, you know, the Bragata Facebook page and
- 38:22then also is the city page. So we can answer questions as are being
- 38:27thrown at us and in the posts and such, and we're answering them.
- 38:30We're answering almost all of them. But you know what was really neat as
- 38:34well. You know you're talking about the heads and beds. You know a
- 38:37lot of people who said, uh, and I saw this, and I
- 38:38was told about this personally that hey, yeah, I live in Winfield,
- 38:43but I got a hotel here because I knew it'd be down here and I'd
- 38:45probably have a few drinks and didn't want to drive home, and and so
- 38:50they would get a hotel in town and we get there just a short drive
- 38:53away. Yeah and smart y smart, Yes, yeah, it's very a
- 38:57smart move. But but that is that isy that is spent in town.
- 39:00It's it's dollars that stay here, and it's people seeing their friends and having
- 39:05a good time. And I got to tell you, you know, we
- 39:07all we want to do is bring two hundred and fifty thousand of our closest
- 39:10friends downtown, have a little party, and I think we've got that ton
- 39:14If you had to estimate, and I know it's very very hard to estimate
- 39:16because you don't know how many people are on the river. You don't know,
- 39:19you know, and and it's not your job to you're you're a meteorologist,
- 39:22you're not an accountant to go how many people would you say was there
- 39:27for let's say the the show that had Vanilla Ice, the Isle of the
- 39:31nineties with tone, Look, how many people if you had to estimate,
- 39:35Brian, would you say, we're there? You know, I will say
- 39:37this the street and the bowl here saying the bowl down in the Amphitheater,
- 39:45it's very deceptive. But I know, having done the Flow Rider last year
- 39:50and and you know the year before with Martina and everything else, the bull
- 39:54was completely full down the Amphitheater was and people were dancing in front of the
- 40:01JumboTron. And what was the most amusing thing to me was, you know,
- 40:06some of them recording the jumbo tron on their phone down there. So
- 40:10I mean that was cool. But the fact that it was completely full there
- 40:14means you know, and we also don't I think you probably noticed this down
- 40:19the boulevard that first block of the boulevard that runs right in front of Hadad.
- 40:22We moved the vendors up on the sidewalk to open that lane. It's
- 40:27open, essentially an extra lane of traffic and still get it was packed all
- 40:30the way back to that area. So I couldn't give you an exact number,
- 40:35but I think our numbers are going to be at least in total attendance
- 40:37between two twenty five and two fifty and probably on the upper end of that.
- 40:42I know our sales numbers were up for various sales points collected. I
- 40:47mean first night, second night, they were up. They were knocking out
- 40:51the numbers from the previous two years. So I think in I think as
- 40:54a collective hole, we are going to be bigger and better than we have
- 40:58been over the last two years. And you know it could be almost a
- 41:02quarter million people in town and you know, economic impact probably gonna be well
- 41:07known for north of thirty five million. Unbelievable. Brian. Before we let
- 41:10you go, give me thirty seconds on the weather, because you've got to
- 41:14make you as if you're on the clock. We got to have you do
- 41:15something. Weather. Give me thirty seconds on this week's weather. Well,
- 41:19the next two days are going to be stupid hot and get them. Is
- 41:22that a scientific term, Brian, stupid hot? It is? It is
- 41:27in my book. And if anybody liked George W. Bushy, and if

- 46:43mayor on the East Coast, says a Texter. Texays ha. Now with
- 46:47this Biden administration, I've got two unemployed beside me that order in food every
- 46:52night, That's absurd, says a text. All right, back to the
- 46:54president. President Biden is the subject of today's commentary, Hoppy's coventary that is,
- 47:00and by the way, you can read that at wv metronews dot com.
- 47:04The question is should the president step aside before or after the Democratic National
- 47:08Convention? And Hoppy's answer is yes, And I think it would be the
- 47:14same answer coming from any sane person Hoppy is a poll going on x now,
- 47:20the artist formally known as Twitter, and as of when I checked it
- 47:23before I started the show, the yes he should set aside folks were way
- 47:29ahead. And I watched the interview Friday night that the president did with ABC
- 47:35News and George Stephan Ovelis, and I will say this, I saw nothing
- 47:39in that interview to clear up any questions about the mental faculties of President Biden.
- 47:46Absolutely nothing, if anything, that interview actually made it worse. And
- 47:55as Hoppy points out in his commentary, which I said, you can read
- 48:00in full wv metronews dot com, the president's approval rating sets in the mid
- 48:05thirties and he is trailing former President Trump by at least six points nationally and
- 48:12in the battleground states that Biden won in twenty twenty, he is way behind
- 48:20in most of those states. Four years ago, Biden was up by ten
- 48:22in the polls. Now he's down and he's going to lose to Trump.
- 48:27So where do the Democrats turn? First of all, Biden would have to
- 48:30step up and step out. That's where it starts, and then it would
- 48:34have to go to vice president. In my eyes, vice president Kamala Harris.
- 48:38Polls have shown, at least some of them, that Harris beats Trump
- 48:43in a hypothetical matchup, and there's simply folks, in my opinion, there's
- 48:50no way that you can look at President Biden and think it's a good idea.
- 48:53He continues, in this race, I just wish the Democrats would be
- 48:58honest with themselves and everybody needs to stop playing the WATERBOUTI is in games.
- 49:02So tech says, we'll close with this, should a thirty four time fella
- 49:07step aside. Trump shouldn't have been there to begin with. In my opinion,
- 49:10I think he's unfit to be the president of the United States. So
- 49:14you're not gotta get an argument there for me one hundred percent. But this
- 49:16is about Biden. This is not about Trump. Trump shouldn't be there to
- 49:19begin with in my opinion. All right, thanks to Brian Hughes for being
- 49:22here Kenawah County bord of It.
