- 0:11Hello friends and a happy Friday to you.
- 0:16I hope you are doing really well because today is a day that we
- 0:22get to celebrate the end of the week together with a Psalm.
- 0:24Today we are going to read Psalm 72.
- 0:28Which is the final Psalm in the second book of the Psalms.
- 0:33There are five books and we are just rounding out the 2nd and
- 0:36next week we will crack open the third book of the Psalms.
- 0:41Today's Psalm is a Psalm that's attributed to Solomon and this
- 0:47is the final Psalm as it says at the end.
- 0:50Of the prayers of David son of Jesse.
- 0:53So this is the end of an era in the Book of Psalms.
- 0:57But there will still be plenty more love and anguish and joy
- 1:03and momentous moments in the Psalms.
- 1:06Today's Psalm is a royal Psalm, a prayer for the king.
- 1:11So all that said, let us put down the busyness of our weeks
- 1:17and our days. As we invite the Holy Spirit,
- 1:21Holy Spirit, come shape our hearts, open our ears and our
- 1:27hearts and our minds that we would not just see you, but
- 1:31experience your presence as we read this Psalm together.
- 1:38All right, friends, let's do it. Let's pray together this Psalm
- 1:43of Solomon, Psalm 72. Give your love of justice to the
- 1:58king, O God, and righteousness to the King's son.
- 2:02Help him judge your people in the right way.
- 2:05Let the poor always be treated fairly.
- 2:08May the mountains yield prosperity for all, and may the
- 2:12hills be fruitful. Help him to defend the poor, to
- 2:17rescue the children of the needy, and to crush their
- 2:20oppressors. May they fear you as long as the
- 2:24sun shines. As long as the moon remains in
- 2:27the sky. Yes, forever.
- 2:31May the King's rule be refreshing like spring rain on
- 2:34freshly cut grass, like the showers that water the earth.
- 2:39May all the godly flourish during his rain.
- 2:42May there be abundant prosperity until the moon is no more.
- 2:48May he rain from sea to sea. And from the Euphrates River to
- 2:52the ends of the Earth Desert nomads will bow before him.
- 2:57His enemies will fall before him in the dust.
- 3:00The western kings of Tashish and other distant lands will bring
- 3:04him tribute. The eastern kings of Sheba and
- 3:08Siba will bring him gifts. All kings will bow before him,
- 3:13and all nations will serve him. He will rescue the poor when
- 3:17they cry to him. He will help thee oppressed.
- 3:21Who have no one to defend them. He feels pity for the weak and
- 3:25the needy, and he will rescue them.
- 3:28He will redeem them from oppression and violence, for
- 3:31their lives are precious to him. Long live the king.
- 3:36May the gold of Sheba be given to him.
- 3:39May the people always pray for him and bless him all day.
- 3:42Long May there be abundant grain throughout the land, flourishing
- 3:47even on the hilltops. May the fruit trees flourish
- 3:51like the trees of Lebanon, and may the people thrive like grass
- 3:55in a field. May the King's name endure
- 3:58forever. May continue as long as the sun
- 4:02shines. May all nations be blessed
- 4:05through him and bring him praise.
- 4:09Praise the Lord God, the God of Israel, who alone does such
- 4:14wonderful things. Praise his glorious name
- 4:17forever. Let the whole earth be filled
- 4:21with his glory. Amen and Amen.
- 4:25This ends the prayers of David, son of Jesse.
- 4:40God. We yearn for such a time where
- 4:43there is the rule of justice and mercy and kindness and
- 4:48compassion. On those who have no voice of
- 4:52their own, thank you that in your heart this is how you
- 4:58desire your creation to be, with your refrain of kindness and
- 5:04love echoing over the hills. And we thank you that ultimately
- 5:11you will restore your creation to be a place of justice and
- 5:16mercy and compassion. But until then.
- 5:20Give us hearts to continue crying out to you, looking
- 5:26forward to that day. You are wonderful and we love
- 5:31you, and it's in the name of Jesus that we pray all these
- 5:34things. Amen.
