Transcript
- 0:00Right hour number two, Welcome back, Miller and Condon.
- 0:02Iowa Sports Radio Network, wherever you're listening in the
- 0:05state of Iowa. Glad that you are.
- 0:07Let's get right to it. He is the head coach of the Iowa
- 0:10Wild. They dropped the puck on their
- 0:12season Saturday night down at the KC Center.
- 0:15He's Greg Cronin in his first year behind the bench of the
- 0:17Iowa Wild. Coach, my partner's name is
- 0:20Trent Condon. This is Ken Miller.
- 0:21Good to talk to you, Coach. How are you?
- 0:24I'm good, thanks. I appreciate you coming on.
- 0:27Well, let's you know, I, I listened to media day last week
- 0:30and I was struck by one of your answers about the systems and
- 0:35your Yeah, you know, one of your responsibilities is to get to
- 0:37get the players to to buy into the Minnesota, the big club
- 0:42system. So when they get that call up,
- 0:45they're ready to go. My question is, as many stops as
- 0:48you've had, do these systems kind of run together or are
- 0:52they, are there significant differences amongst every team?
- 0:58Well, I mean, you have to go zone to zone to discuss that.
- 1:02And I think the zone that's probably the most sophisticated
- 1:06would be the defensive zone. Certain teams defend
- 1:10differently. I would just use it as a generic
- 1:13term. Some teams zone, team, some
- 1:15teams zone or sorry, a man on man and other teams are a
- 1:18hybrid, right? So we kind of run a hybrid
- 1:20system. I ran a different system when I
- 1:23was in the Anaheim. It's not too much different.
- 1:26But I think there's certain trigger points in that zone
- 1:28system with a hybrid system that are going to probably guarantee
- 1:32success. And that's what we're focusing
- 1:34on, trying to just make it real simple.
- 1:36When you look at the way that you were kind of built, you as a
- 1:39hockey coach, coupled with what the Minnesota Wild want you guys
- 1:42to do down here with the Iowa Wild, what is the style of play?
- 1:45If you know kind of a novice fan went out there, hasn't seen one
- 1:48of your coach teams before, what should they expect to see on the
- 1:51ice? Well, I have a real basic
- 1:56identity that I like to have the players play to when that's play
- 2:00fast, hunt pucks down, possess the pucks, then you got a
- 2:04defense, you got to defend relentless defense.
- 2:07And those are all kind of generic hyperbole things, but I
- 2:10don't, you know, you don't really know if the players can
- 2:13match that. Like for example, you want to
- 2:14play fast, but if you have slow skates, but probably not going
- 2:17to play too fast, you've got to make an adjustment and let the
- 2:21puck do the work. There's not one player on the
- 2:22ice can out race the pucks. You may have to use a little bit
- 2:25more of a stretch mentality with your passing and your dump and
- 2:28chase systems. Yeah, fair.
- 2:30Fairpoint and I and I watched your Ducks play last year and
- 2:33they played hard. I, I watched play Winnipeg three
- 2:36times. You beat them twice and they had
- 2:38the best record in the NHL last year.
- 2:40So hopefully that carries over. This roster that you're putting
- 2:43together here. How important is it to have some
- 2:46veteran presence of guys that have experienced the NHL that
- 2:50maybe, you know, not a tweener, but you know, they're going to
- 2:54be up at some point or they're on their way down.
- 2:56They're hanging on and just want to, you know, share what they've
- 2:58learned with some of the some of the kids that are on their way
- 3:01up. How important is veteran
- 3:03presence on an NHL roster? The veteran presence is the most
- 3:08important part of an NHL roster. It's so critical because they
- 3:14are literally an extension of the coaching staff.
- 3:17And I made this comment like in when I realized this house in
- 3:21the NHL number of years as an assistant and as a head coach,
- 3:24like think about this. So listen, is that are familiar
- 3:27with this the big college football state, right?
- 3:29College football's got a little bit crazy.
- 3:31I don't want to go down that road with the transfers and the
- 3:33NLI and all that. But the old traditional college
- 3:36football, you'd spend 4 years at a school and you'd graduate,
- 3:39right? So you can maybe catch up to the
- 3:41teams that more talent, you're recruiting better athletes as
- 3:44freshmen and sophomores. And as they are developed and
- 3:47they're coached, you can you can try and gain competitive
- 3:49advantages on teams that historically had had better
- 3:52teams than you did. So you use that that kind of as
- 3:55your mentality like we're going to outwork teams are going to
- 3:57out execute teams. Well in the NHL, they don't
- 4:01graduate, OK, Just keep getting better, right?
- 4:04In the American League, what we do have, we have a 1/3 of the
- 4:08players do graduate. So you can only have 6 veterans
- 4:11used to be fixed in an exemption.
- 4:14So a third of your skaters are graduating every year, right?
- 4:18So you think about this, when you do have them, if you do have
- 4:21good veterans, you keep them and they're able to stay.
- 4:24All right. And those are the guys that
- 4:26literally help these young kids anywhere from 19 to say 23
- 4:30probably is when the the entry level contract expire, that
- 4:34three-year window when you want these kids to create some
- 4:37visibility so the NHL club can say, OK, we're going to, we're
- 4:40going to invest another contract in that player.
- 4:43We're going to call that player up.
- 4:44We're going to let that player go.
- 4:46That group of veterans that's that literally sits between the
- 4:50coaches and those young kids are probably the most important part
- 4:54of that development plan. Tell us a neighbor to a player
- 4:57that you've seen on the ices you guys have been working towards
- 5:00the beginning of the season, the home opener on Saturday that's
- 5:03been turning your heads a surprise or maybe a new name or
- 5:06just a guy that is even better than you anticipated before you
- 5:09see saw him out there. Well, I won't touch the older
- 5:13guys because I think the fans are familiar with the old
- 5:15investments. Yeah, but the guy like Matt SOP,
- 5:18he's come through camp. I didn't know who he was.
- 5:20He was kind of up and down between the East Coast
- 5:22Heartlanders and the Wild last year.
- 5:24He's really shown a lot to me this camp.
- 5:26Riley Height has come on. He's a young kid.
- 5:30We drafted out of Prince George first year in the HL.
- 5:33He seems to get better and better every day.
- 5:36Cooper Lining, who came from Finland.
- 5:37He's the second round draft pick like I was there rookie Cam.
- 5:41So like the and I use this expression quite frequently.
- 5:44Like there's a mystery in once how some guys develop quicker
- 5:47than others. You know, we all this sports
- 5:50science, analytics, all this data that's hardcore data.
- 5:53You can say 2 + 2 as far as math, but you don't know like
- 5:56mentally and emotionally how quickly players can grab
- 5:59concepts and deal with adversity because a lot of these kids are
- 6:02dealing with adversity for the first time.
- 6:04They've like run the show on their junior teams, have been
- 6:06offensively productive. Now they get to the second
- 6:09highest level in the world, which is the American Hockey
- 6:11League. And the success they had earlier
- 6:14isn't as easy. So they probably get hit
- 6:16mentally like, jeez, I don't know if I can do this.
- 6:18The motion they get down a little bit, but I've 11.
- 6:21Good thing is I've seen these young kids seem to get better
- 6:23and better. So, you know, that's the that's
- 6:26the good thing. David Spot chicks a young
- 6:27defense, but he's got a chance to play in the NHL.
- 6:29Lambos has got a chance to play in the NHL.
- 6:31Like we've got to get those guys prepared for that.
- 6:34How come goalies are are you take a little bit longer
- 6:37historically to to get their game NHL ready?
- 6:43I think it goes back to what I said, honestly, the emotional
- 6:45and the mental part of it, like they're physically these kids
- 6:48today, you know, when I was a kid, there was no strength and
- 6:51conditioning coaches. There was, you know, there
- 6:53weren't even a lot of weight rooms.
- 6:54For God's sakes, you, you, you didn't have Lifetime fitness and
- 6:5824 Hour Fitness. You, you didn't have those
- 7:00resources today. The kids have their own personal
- 7:02trainers, They have their own programs.
- 7:05You know, a 20 year old goalie and a 27 year old goalie
- 7:08probably look the same athletically and they look the
- 7:10same physically, but it's the mental and emotional maturity
- 7:13that actually takes a while to to allow them to be more
- 7:17consistent in that. When, when the final buzzer goes
- 7:21on any given game, what do you want fans leaving the leaving
- 7:25the KC Center to to think about your team Coach?
- 7:28What's the what's the message that you want the fan base to
- 7:31maybe absorb maybe more than anything?
- 7:35Well, it's a Midwestern state. People here are very hardcore
- 7:38value people. They work hard.
- 7:39It's a kind of a blue collar image.
- 7:41Our team has to play hard. I want the people watching the
- 7:44game think they win, lose a tie. Those kids play hard.
- 7:47The second level is we have to execute.
- 7:49There's got to be some sort of an identity every night, and I'm
- 7:52not going to go into that and take another interview for that
- 7:55one. But I just want the fans coming
- 7:57out proud of the way they work. It's going to be a reflection of
- 8:00just hardcore Iowa values. Well, I love the fact that the
- 8:04the letter that you sent out to the fan base when you first got
- 8:07here, that that goes a long way, coach.
- 8:09That was a lot of people noticed that.
- 8:11Good luck this season. He said he'll take another
- 8:13interview. I'm going to hold you to that as
- 8:16we look forward to talking to you throughout the season.
- 8:18Thank you, Coach Cronin. Good luck this year.
- 8:20We'll talk to you down the road, OK?
- 8:23OK. Thanks guys.
- 8:24Thank you. Appreciate you.
- 8:25Do the same. Greg Cronin, the head coach of
- 8:27the Iowa Wild Day will start their season coming up here on
- 8:31Saturday night. They drop the puck.
- 8:33Chicago Wolves are in town. All right, let's switch gears.
- 8:36Let's go from hockey to football.
- 8:39Frank Schwab, he's a Wisconsin grad.
- 8:41He covers the NFL for yahoosports.com and Frank joins
- 8:45us. Frank Trenton, Ken, thank you
- 8:46for coming on. Let's let's start with your
- 8:48Badgers, the Hawkeyes. We do it every year.
- 8:50This week we we don't want to bug you more than once a month.
- 8:53So we make sure that the the one time we're going to bug you that
- 8:56during the month of is when Wisconsin and Iowa play.
- 9:00You've watched your squad maybe maybe half it, two and three not
- 9:03going particularly well. Iowa's three and two.
- 9:06These two schools, it's a great rivalry.
- 9:08Love the fact that Wisconsin's doing 42 push ups at the end of
- 9:12every practice. That's what they I will put up
- 9:14on him. Last year that did not sit well.
- 9:17I can't wait for this game. Frank, good to talk to you.
- 9:18What do you expect to see on Saturday?
- 9:22Yeah, you can't bring me out and talk about the Milwaukee
- 9:24Brewers. You gotta gotta talk about the
- 9:26Badgers. Like, yeah, usually, yes, I, I
- 9:30look forward to talking about Wisconsin, Iowa most years.
- 9:33And you know, right before he called, I was like, oh God, I
- 9:36got, I got to talk about Wisconsin, Iowa, the Burrell
- 9:41among Wisconsin fans of Iowa. People didn't know this could
- 9:44not be any lower. It was the The best performance
- 9:47of the fickle era might be not getting blown out by Michigan
- 9:52and covering a 17 1/2 point spread like they only lost by
- 9:5514. Wow, we're back.
- 9:57Like that's how bad it is in Wisconsin right now.
- 10:00But I'm sure those 42 push ups are going to change everything
- 10:03in the program. So yes, if I if I'm Iowa, I feel
- 10:07very good going in to play Wisconsin.
- 10:09I don't I don't think Wisconsin's going to win a big
- 10:1110 game this year. Maybe one, maybe they get one.
- 10:14I Maryland went in there and held Wisconsin scoreless until a
- 10:17garbage touched on in the last minute.
- 10:19Like what are we going to do against nothing against
- 10:23Maryland, any Maryland folks out there?
- 10:24But if we get blown out by Maryland like that, we're going
- 10:27to get blown out by everybody like that.
- 10:30It the state of the program is absolute shambles.
- 10:34I think it's going to take years to dig out of this.
- 10:36I couldn't feel lower about the Wisconsin Badgers.
- 10:39I, I usually lean toward pessimistic fan anyway, maybe
- 10:43because my teams haven't been that good my entire life.
- 10:45But this is real pessimism. This is there.
- 10:49There's nothing to hold on to right now.
- 10:51There's no NFL talent in the program.
- 10:53They got the wrong coach who has like a $30 million buy out.
- 10:56It is you're losing again, The I'm not very bleak.
- 11:01The again, I want to repeat this because it is not a lie.
- 11:04I think the best day Luke Fickle has had as a Wisconsin coach
- 11:08with losing by only 14 in Michigan, that's the best.
- 11:11That is the high point of the Fickle era so far.
- 11:14Oh boy. And here comes Ohio State,
- 11:16Oregon, Washington, IN Illinois, and then for the Axe.
- 11:21Yeah, you might lose every game by those by 30.
- 11:24It's just remarkably. And I don't think people have
- 11:27caught on. I I think maybe people in the
- 11:28Midwest have, but I had a bunch of people like, man, why is
- 11:33what's Alabama like a 20? You know, I think it was like a
- 11:3627 point spread, 24 points, whatever it was.
- 11:39I know I had Alabama that day. Let's put it that that's how bad
- 11:41Wisconsin is. I was like, yeah, I'm betting
- 11:43Alabama. I might as well make money off
- 11:44of it. So I had a bunch of people
- 11:47texting me like, is Wisconsin really that bad?
- 11:50And I texted them back like, yes, yes, they are.
- 11:52They're they're absolutely they're they're one of the 10
- 11:54worst teams in the power 4 right now.
- 11:56I don't know how this happened. This is back.
- 11:58Any Wisconsin heads out there or just big 10 people?
- 12:01This is like back to the Don Morton of how bad they are.
- 12:05This is just pathetic. This is pathetic.
- 12:07Like it's awful. And when Luke Fickle gets fired,
- 12:10I guarantee you there will be 100% approval rating for that
- 12:14move across the Wisconsin fan base.
- 12:16He is him having a losing record as Ohio State's coach.
- 12:19That one year should have been a tip off that that this is we're
- 12:23just being sold a bag of goods. Just absolutely crazy.
- 12:26They can't run the ball. The offensive line is bad.
- 12:28They're Wisconsin to go away from your DNA.
- 12:33And I will say this, and Frank, just as a football fan, you'll
- 12:37know that whenever Kirk Ferris retires, Hawkeye fans, look at
- 12:40what's happening here. You don't want the shiny object.
- 12:43You don't want somebody that's going to try to change your
- 12:45football DNA. There are certain ways that you
- 12:48have to be built. Wisconsin went away with it,
- 12:50went away from it, and well, we're seeing what's happening
- 12:52now. Oh yeah, I Nate Tice, who is my
- 12:56Co worker, you know, son of Mike Tyson, obviously, and he was
- 12:59backup quarterback for Wisconsin when we got together Super Bowl
- 13:03week last year, having dinner and, you know, out of work
- 13:05outing or whatever. And both of us had the same.
- 13:09Where did our program go? There's no toughness in this
- 13:11program. There's no look, I get it and
- 13:14there is. This is this goes for Iowa fans
- 13:17and went for Wisconsin fans, including me.
- 13:18I'm not going to say I wasn't. I didn't have these thoughts or,
- 13:22or anything. You always wonder, like, what
- 13:24if, you know, we're so good? Maybe if we morphed into a
- 13:28little more modern game that we could, you know, compete for a
- 13:31national championship because we've been good for 30 years now
- 13:34and they just lost their way. Even JJ Watt tweeted about this
- 13:39like that. There's just this isn't
- 13:40Wisconsin football anymore. And yes, maybe we were really
- 13:43boring for a while. Like it wasn't the most fun
- 13:46version of football to watch. I get that.
- 13:48But I knew every Saturday I, I could turn on the television and
- 13:53a bunch of 310 LB dudes were just to be pushing you 5 yards
- 13:56downfield and Jonathan Taylor was gonna be running for 100
- 13:59yards like it is at least I knew that they were going to win 910
- 14:02games. Some years they'd win 11 and
- 14:04it'd be really good. And maybe we'll go to Rose Bowl
- 14:06once in a while when the brakes go our way.
- 14:08And now it's like, I don't think we're good.
- 14:10I, I don't look forward to Wisconsin games anymore.
- 14:13I, I'm not like, I will watch the Wisconsin Iowa game on
- 14:16Saturday if I have absolutely nothing else to do.
- 14:18If it's like, Oh yeah, I was supposed to mow the grass today,
- 14:21I'll be like, all right, I'll miss the first quarter.
- 14:23Big deal like that. That's what's been robbed.
- 14:25And, and I, I'm talking to any fan base out there who, because
- 14:28it complaints about their team, you can get to a point where you
- 14:32don't want like, it's not even a part of your Saturday anymore.
- 14:35Imagine that. Like, imagine, you know, you're
- 14:37like, it used to be like for a big game.
- 14:40Now you're on Wisconsin #1 Ohio State's coming to town all week.
- 14:44I'd be planning my week around it.
- 14:45Like, Oh no, honey, we we can't we can't make any plans on
- 14:48Saturday at 2:30 because I'm watching Wisconsin now.
- 14:51It's like there's not a game on the thing on the schedule that I
- 14:54would be changing the slightest of plans to watch that.
- 14:57That's what's right. I could we could do like 7
- 15:00segments on this be complaining about Wisconsin football.
- 15:02But I do think it applies to everybody of, hey, like, yeah,
- 15:05you, you, you might not be totally thrilled with the state
- 15:08of your program right now. Like Iowa, like, it's a good
- 15:11exam. It's a really, really good Iowa
- 15:13and Wisconsin and Iowa, Wisconsin have been parallel for
- 15:16a long time. But it can get a lot worse.
- 15:18Trust me. It can get to a point where
- 15:20you're just like, this is an embarrassment.
- 15:22I don't even like talking about Wisconsin football.
- 15:24The people college football gets brought up.
- 15:26I'm like, I want to change the subject because I don't want
- 15:28them to be like, hey, well, how's Wisconsin doing this year?
- 15:29Because I don't want to talk about it.
- 15:31You've been a good sport. Let's let's do one on the
- 15:33Brewers before we get to the NFL because it seems like they're
- 15:36going to end that series today, Frank, and then they'll play
- 15:38either obviously Philly or Dodgers.
- 15:41Ohh don't don't. Don't has been so good though.
- 15:43I, I, I can't even speak rationally about this anymore
- 15:47because you know it. If they would have been playing
- 15:51the Padres or the Reds or whoever, it would have been just
- 15:54normal playoff pressure. Playing that team from Chicago
- 15:59does not make it like there's two.
- 16:01There's just too much. It's just too much if you lose
- 16:03to Chicago. The Cubs fans are obnoxious in
- 16:07in normal times. If you if if we have the best
- 16:11season in franchise history, which it literally is, and he
- 16:14just loses to the Cubs in your first playoff series, I'll never
- 16:17hear the end of it from my Cubs fans friends.
- 16:19So yes, tonight there I will be. If it's a tie game late.
- 16:24Just know that I am supposed to be why.
- 16:26I hope my bosses aren't listening.
- 16:27I'm supposed to be watching that NFL game and writing off of it
- 16:30and all that. I will not be paying a lick of
- 16:32attention to that game. I will be chewing my
- 16:35fingernails, hoping and praying that the Brewers don't go to a
- 16:38Game 5. We go from Wisconsin sports to
- 16:41your main beat that is the NFL. Well, in fact, let's stay in
- 16:44that state. Green Bay, week one, this team
- 16:48might win a Super Bowl. Week 2, here we go.
- 16:51Since then, given up 40 to Dallas, it has not been the same
- 16:54Packers team. What's going on there?
- 16:55What's the issue with Green Bay and where do we kind of tear
- 16:58them at this point in the year? It is really hard and it's it's
- 17:03so confusing, right? Because I don't even think I'm
- 17:06pretty sure we talked after week 1 or maybe it was Week 2 and
- 17:10we're saying, Oh my goodness, the Packers are messing in
- 17:12football and the Lions are in trouble.
- 17:14The Lions, Oh my goodness, they they miss our coordinators,
- 17:17offensive lines a mess. And what's happened since then?
- 17:21It's crazy. Like you look back and you're
- 17:23like, was that just one of those weird Week 1 things?
- 17:25The the Raiders beating the Patriots or last year the the
- 17:28Patriots beating the Bengals like that?
- 17:30You know, we always have those weird Week 1 results where we
- 17:33look back and we're like that That has nothing to do with what
- 17:36we're watching right now. How did that happen?
- 17:38I wonder if it's the Packers just blasting Lions like that.
- 17:42I'm not saying the Packers are a bad team in any way, but boy,
- 17:45they sure been exposed a little bit these past couple of games.
- 17:49And you know, part of that is just if if they were to kick the
- 17:52field goal against the Browns. Are we having this conversation?
- 17:55Probably not. So I hate to overreact, but at
- 17:59the same time, you did lose to the Browns.
- 18:01You did not beat the Cowboys, who you should be.
- 18:04I mean, you gave up 40 to without CD Lamb.
- 18:07I, I don't know what to make of Packers.
- 18:09I really don't. They're one of those teams that
- 18:10really confuses me because I if I had to say one way or another,
- 18:15is this team good, great, bad, mediocre?
- 18:18I'd say they're very, very good. I I think they're a Super Bowl
- 18:20contender of things break right for them, but we sure haven't
- 18:23seen it since, you know, I mean, now you look back and there's
- 18:26just like, well, the Commanders Week 2, it's a Thursday, it's a
- 18:29short week and that was a good spot for the Packers to be in.
- 18:33Maybe week 1 was a little fluky getting used to the new
- 18:35coordinators and you just have a bad game and it stands out
- 18:38because it's week 1. I don't know, I don't know where
- 18:41I'm at with the Packers right now.
- 18:42I I believe they're very good. I believe they could be a Super
- 18:44Bowl contender, but I want to. I don't want them to be in a
- 18:48game in the fourth quarter against Joe Flacco in the
- 18:50Pingles on Sunday because then you're like, OK, this team's
- 18:54just not good. How did I get fooled so badly?
- 18:57Man survivor, Circus survivor. There'll be a whole bunch of
- 19:00Packer. Fans, I thought, I thought 50%
- 19:03and you never see 50% in a survivor pool.
- 19:06It's always, you know, you get to like 35%.
- 19:09You're like, oh, this is really the chalk.
- 19:11I saw 50%. Fifty estimated 50% of Circa
- 19:15will be on the Packers on Sunday, which is just wild.
- 19:18I want to talk about the AFC North.
- 19:20We're up until like Monday or Tuesday, Baltimore somehow was
- 19:24still favored to win that division.
- 19:25I think the news that Jackson probably not going to play this
- 19:28week, the Steelers are now a slight favorite to win the
- 19:30North. But why is Baltimore still
- 19:32seemingly on a lot of people's radar when it comes to the AFC
- 19:36North? Are they are they still still a
- 19:38legitimate threat to win that division?
- 19:39Obviously when Jackson comes back.
- 19:41But the defense is just so bad, Frank.
- 19:45Yeah, it's, I think it's a combination of things.
- 19:48I think it's the first part of that is I don't think there's a
- 19:51lot of faith in the Steelers and definitely not the Bengals or
- 19:54Browns. So I think it's hard for people
- 19:57to wrap their heads around this Steelers team winning the
- 19:59division. I yes, they're off to a good
- 20:01start. Three and one perfect credit.
- 20:02Awesome. But Aaron Rodgers, the
- 20:05underlying metrics say he is not playing well.
- 20:07It's a cool story. He's he made plays for them when
- 20:10he has to etcetera, etcetera. But his average depth of target,
- 20:14which is, you know, a very common stat now it's 3.1.
- 20:18There's no other quarterback in the NFL under like 6.4.
- 20:21So he is. Becoming an extreme check down
- 20:25Charlie, like that's all he's doing is just throwing at the
- 20:28line of scrimmage and that is not Aaron Rodgers.
- 20:30That tells you something's wrong.
- 20:32I think that defenses look old and slow at times this year.
- 20:35Played well against the Vikings. So maybe things are turning
- 20:37around. Really well coached team.
- 20:39So that's possible. So I think part of it is just
- 20:41skepticism about the Steelers, which I have too.
- 20:43I I don't think the Steelers are that good.
- 20:44I don't think are better than a nine win team that kind of opens
- 20:47the door for the Ravens that the Ravens can just get it going.
- 20:49But now you start to just do the math of I don't think they're
- 20:53beating the Rams on Sunday. Like a angry Rams team with
- 20:56extra rest is not going to come in there and lose to Cooper rush
- 20:59and the Ravens third week of the preseason lineup.
- 21:02Like that's just not going to happen.
- 21:03Right. So all of a sudden and and the
- 21:06Browns, the the Steelers host the Browns, who are coming in
- 21:09from London, the first time ever the NFL scheduled a team coming
- 21:13in from London, not taking their by against the team coming off
- 21:16their by like that's a very big disadvantage.
- 21:19So I assume that the Steelers are going to win.
- 21:22All of a sudden they're they're four and one.
- 21:25The Ravens are one and four like these.
- 21:28This is not easy to overcome. Not not to mention all the
- 21:33things you talked about. Their defense is bad right now.
- 21:35They're they're Henry. I don't know, like he's had some
- 21:39long runs, but it just hasn't looked like Derrick Henry the
- 21:42past few weeks and it's inevitable that eventually slows
- 21:45down. So I think it's a combination of
- 21:47not a lot of faith in the Steelers and just this kind of
- 21:51hope that the Ravens turn it around, which I do think it
- 21:54will. I like that coach, except Mark
- 21:57Jackson is MVP level player. They'll be better, but at some
- 22:02point you dig yourself so big of a hole that it's hard to get off
- 22:04of that. The Indianapolis Colts, what are
- 22:07the stories of the season? Are they a contender?
- 22:11Yeah, they can win the AFC S Yeah, they can win a playoff
- 22:15game. Is there more than that, though,
- 22:17with this Colts team? You know, I don't think so.
- 22:20And I feel bad about it because I I I feel like I'm just this
- 22:25may Sayer about the Colts when all the Colts have done is look
- 22:29like one of the best teams in football.
- 22:30If you're just judging the last five weeks, what you've seen on
- 22:33the field, they should be 5 and O and they have quality wins.
- 22:36I mean, they beat the Broncos, who I think are really, really
- 22:39good. They should have beat the Rams,
- 22:42if not for two or three just ridiculous mental mistakes that
- 22:46you're just not going to repeat. You're not going to have 10 men
- 22:48on the field for an 88 yard touchdown.
- 22:50You're not going to see Adonai Mitchell drop the ball before he
- 22:52scores again, because you're not going to see much of Adonai
- 22:54Mitchell anymore. They so you look and you say,
- 22:57why would I discount what this Colts team has done?
- 23:01It's not like they've just had a really, really easy schedule.
- 23:04It's not like they're just sneaking by teams.
- 23:06They'd be the Raiders 40 to 6. So I feel bad saying, yes, I am
- 23:10skeptical about the Colts keeping this up.
- 23:12I think they're a good team. I think they, if you look at
- 23:15look at their schedule, I don't have it in front of me, but I
- 23:17looked at it this week. Their next 5 games are either
- 23:20four and one or five and O. It's unbelievable to run out.
- 23:23They have they're going to be 9 and one or eight and two unless
- 23:26they really screw this up. And I like Jacksonville a lot.
- 23:29I think Jacksonville will win the division before the season
- 23:31started. But at some point, like the
- 23:34Colts are going to get again, if they're nine and one, like, who
- 23:37am I to say that they're not for real?
- 23:39I don't think they're a Super Bowl contender, but definitely
- 23:43can win that division and definitely can, I guess win a
- 23:46game in the playoffs. I don't know, Like, I, I, I'm
- 23:48needlessly skeptical about the Colts when all they've done is
- 23:51win. And I'll get my hats off to the
- 23:53Colts. Like this has been Shane Steiken
- 23:54went from the hot seat to one of the hottest coaches in the NFL,
- 23:57which you don't see very often. It's been a dream run out for
- 24:00them so far. We've got a minute left.
- 24:02So I got asked about the Chiefs, who's beaten, beaten the Giants
- 24:06and the Ravens without Lamar Jackson.
- 24:07Then here. Here we go with them Lions,
- 24:09Raiders, Commanders, Bills, Broncos, Colts and then
- 24:12Thanksgiving against the Cowboys.
- 24:14That schedule is daunting. Where are you on the Kansas City
- 24:17Chiefs 2 and three? They, you know, two weeks ago, I
- 24:20thought maybe they're back. I'm not sure they're back,
- 24:22Frank. Yeah.
- 24:24Yeah, I thought 145 left on Monday night.
- 24:27They're back. I didn't expect Trevor to take
- 24:30the Jaguars down and beat them, but he did.
- 24:32It's funny because we're seeing Mahomes played great football
- 24:36Monday night. Great.
- 24:37It was vintage Mahomes and the Jaguars still beat them.
- 24:40And I get a Lions team that comes in now the Lions are beat
- 24:43up. The Lions secondary is really
- 24:44got a lot of issues. But if so, if the Chiefs win she
- 24:49Rice back in Week 7, I think they're going to get it going.
- 24:52I think the Chiefs are going to be fine, but I'll tell you this,
- 24:54I think the Broncos win that division.
- 24:55I think the Broncos are the best team in that division straight
- 24:57up. I just think that they've lost
- 25:00two games with no time left on the clock at the Colts, at the
- 25:03Chargers, like, OK, like that. That's pretty reasonable.
- 25:06So I don't know where I'm at with the Chiefs.
- 25:07I think they're going to be a team nobody wants to play in
- 25:09January because because of Andy, because of Patrick.
- 25:13But I don't look at this as a dominant Chiefs team either.
- 25:16Maybe they will be by the end of the season, but again, I'm I'm
- 25:20sitting here telling you I don't think they wouldn't have
- 25:21division. So this is not one of the more
- 25:24strongest teams of the cheese dynasty.
- 25:26I'll tell you that there there's a lot of issues here and just
- 25:28losing games like, you know, letting Trevor Lawrence go down
- 25:31and last 1:45 to win that game. But all this close game luck
- 25:35they had last year really regressing on them.
- 25:37So I think it's still a very good team, but maybe not.
- 25:39I don't think they're going to be back in the Super Bowl or win
- 25:41their division. Appreciate the relationship,
- 25:44Frank. Thanks for doing this, as
- 25:45always. We'll talk to you in a few
- 25:46weeks. Thank you, Frank Schwab.
- 25:48Absolutely, guys. I appreciate it.
- 25:49Yeah, good to talk to you, Frank Schwab, as we check in and his
- 25:51alma mater, the Badgers and Obvious and you.
- 25:54That's an excellent point when it comes to the the Badgers and
- 25:58the Hawkeyes win 910 games, right?
- 26:01And that's the same. But if you do go get that shiny
- 26:04object, look what's happened to them as Frank.
- 26:07Said you've heard it from you've heard it from Hawkeye.
- 26:09Absolutely. No, you don't want that.
- 26:11You don't. It's not going to work.
- 26:13It's not going to work in Iowa City, just like it's not working
- 26:16in Madison. Get the three. £120 offensive
- 26:19lineman, open up the hole, run the Dang football.
- 26:21They got away from that in Wisconsin.
- 26:23Look what's happened to that team, Trent.
- 26:25They might not win another game. Yeah.
- 26:27They so in our Locked on Big 10 roundtable that we had before
- 26:31the season, I was given a hard time too because we had to have
- 26:34a hot take. A hot take was that Wisconsin
- 26:36was going to go one and eight in the Big 10 and finish in last
- 26:39place. They.
- 26:39Were going to be wrong, they might not win 1.
- 26:40They're going to be O 9. I think you're right.
- 26:42If they don't win Saturday, they're going to be O 9.
- 26:45Because Minnesota wants that axe.
- 26:47Absolutely. They're going to be O.
- 26:49And that team will be so checked out at that point, if it plays
- 26:51out, yes, if it plays, if it plays out in that fashion and
- 26:55Phil Fleck, he'll have the boys ready.
- 26:57We'll talk to Simple next his Huskers.
- 26:59Will his team be ready at the end of the year?
- 27:02How fascinating where they're going to be.
- 27:05I'm not wishing this. I love that game, Trent.
- 27:07I love that game. We'll talk to Sip about this
- 27:09week's game. I in last week's game when he
- 27:11joins us on the other side, Miller and Condon on the Iowa
- 27:14Sports Radio Network. It's time for SIP.
- 27:21Stephen M Siple talks with myself and Ken on Nebraska
- 27:24football. I mean, I have a radio show, we
- 27:26have callers. I pay attention to my Twitter
- 27:29notifications and all that. There's definitely some
- 27:32frustration. We talk Cornhuskers, and you
- 27:35never know what else is going to come up with 30 years on the
- 27:41Nebraska beat. Here's Steven M Simple.
- 27:43As long as they're paying me to talk, I'm just going to keep.
- 27:45Doing it all. Right, let's get right to him.
- 27:48Sip joins us every single Thursday at this time during the
- 27:51football season to talk about those Huskers as we know, final
- 27:55week of the regular season, Iowa and Nebraska.
- 27:58Nebraska this week they go on the road, take on a pesky
- 28:01Maryland squad. You caught sipping me talking
- 28:02off air there. What did you say?
- 28:04We were still talking, were you? Yeah, and SIP joins us.
- 28:07Hello Steven M how are you? Good, good.
- 28:10How are? You doing pretty well.
- 28:12Hey, before we go forward to this game against Maryland, want
- 28:15to go back to last week where I thought Nebraska answered some
- 28:20questions, but there's one question that still lingers
- 28:22said, but I'm sure you'll agree with me, and it's the offensive
- 28:25line because they're still giving up way too many sacks.
- 28:29Rayola doesn't have time to throw the football.
- 28:31He's scrambling for his life back there.
- 28:34Disappointing so far. The play of the offensive line.
- 28:37Defensive line was better last week, I thought offensive line,
- 28:40not so much. How do they fix it?
- 28:41Can they fix it? Due to observations, the
- 28:46defensive line was was excellent and that was a remember I said
- 28:51to you guys, I don't expect you to remember to remember
- 28:55everything I say, but I said I was worried about that D line
- 28:59being a vulnerability. It did not look like a
- 29:01vulnerability at all. The offensive line has now a
- 29:04back-to-back game. They've given up.
- 29:06Well, I mean Nebraska has given up 12 facts in two games.
- 29:12I mean, that's not really sustainable. 7 stacks against
- 29:17Michigan, five against Michigan State.
- 29:21I would say there was a variety of issues.
- 29:25In fact, Kenny, I'll tell you, I don't know.
- 29:28You guys probably look at Pro Football Focus a little bit.
- 29:32The grade, the offensive line didn't grade that bad really
- 29:36that grades fairly well. No, it didn't it.
- 29:38So there's sort of a lot going on in that conversation as there
- 29:42often isn't football. It wasn't great protection.
- 29:47Some of the time it was. Sometimes it was receivers not
- 29:52getting open and they saw more man coverage than they thought.
- 29:57I think that's a sort of a hidden factor in this
- 29:59discussion. And, you know, a running back
- 30:05blew an assignment at one point. The left tackle blew an
- 30:08assignment at one point. And Dylan, Dylan at times
- 30:14probably held the ball a little too long.
- 30:17That's the discussion around here.
- 30:20I don't see that being a major problem like some tend to.
- 30:25That's kind of the narrative around here a little bit.
- 30:27I don't see it. I watched the game live, I
- 30:29watched again, and yeah, there's a couple instances where he did
- 30:32that. But no, the offensive line, they
- 30:36got it. They got to tune it up.
- 30:38I mean, they're playing the Maryland team that has 19 sacks.
- 30:42It's not a great Maryland team by any stretch, but they do have
- 30:4619 sacks and they do have some good line, but up front on
- 30:49defense. Yeah, One thing that I I thought
- 30:51really jumped off is they've been getting off the field
- 30:53defensively a bunch and this is going to maybe come down to
- 30:55those third down conversions. Oblique Washington freshman
- 30:58quarterback. I think it'd be a lot different
- 31:00if he was making his way to Lincoln for this one, but he's
- 31:02going to be in the comfy he Co finds there in College Park.
- 31:06What have you seen out of Malik Washington?
- 31:08And you just think he's a young guy.
- 31:10He was a big time prospect and he wanted to stay home.
- 31:13But I'm sure there's already some phone calls going to the
- 31:15Washington residents about where he's going to be getting his
- 31:18mail next. Year.
- 31:20Yeah, he's, he's interesting. He's not.
- 31:23He's completing 60% of his passes with they have 21 drops
- 31:30if if they didn't have what if they didn't have 21 drops, he'd
- 31:34be complete and 75% of the pass yeah, he's accurate.
- 31:39I've watched him twice he's snapped he's got a really strong
- 31:42arm. He snaps it off really well.
- 31:44They don't ask him to throw a whole lot downfield yet as a
- 31:47this young he's good. He's legit 6 and he's 65231 by
- 31:53the way. But here's the big this is, you
- 31:56know, this is it's kind of like Dylan, he doesn't run.
- 32:00He had a 17 yard run against Towson and really nothing else
- 32:04to speak up this year. He doesn't run it much.
- 32:07I think he has, I think he's been credited with 11 carry.
- 32:13He's not. So so you know, that's always
- 32:16something to look at. They don't run the ball.
- 32:19They're, they're, they've run for 460 some yards this year.
- 32:25Yeah, they don't run it. So it's on him and he's got,
- 32:29he's got three very good receivers.
- 32:32Now you say, well, what about the drop?
- 32:33Yeah, they drop it. One guy has 6 drops.
- 32:36I mean, so I've watched them. They're typical Maryland.
- 32:42You know, they're, they're, they got skilled players on that on
- 32:46the outside and then on defense, it's they're, they're better
- 32:50than Maryland usually. I think, like I said up front,
- 32:53they're pretty good. 19 sacks is 19 sacks.
- 32:57So I don't know. I I think it's a good matchup
- 33:00for Nebraska though. Speaking of running backs, Emma
- 33:03Johnson is is off to I think a really nice start to get to the
- 33:06end zone a bunch, but the drop off from RB-1 and I'm not even
- 33:10sure there is an RB2 sip. It seems like it's Emma Johnson
- 33:13running the football is is there just not much behind him?
- 33:17So there's just not much behind him.
- 33:19It's been a. It's been a.
- 33:21Pretty extensive conversation here.
- 33:24We're not used to it at Nebraska necessarily.
- 33:26Just now he is. He's third in the league in
- 33:30rushing. Emma Johnson, they're 14th in
- 33:33the Big 10. It's odd, right?
- 33:36Yeah, Yeah, they have. They have the he's tied for
- 33:39third with Jonah Coleman. Justice Haynes is 1 and Waymont
- 33:43Jordan's 2, and then Coleman and Johnson.
- 33:47Emma Johnson are three, but they're 14th in Russia.
- 33:51It's odd. It's an odd conversation.
- 33:53They don't. And then now again, you know how
- 33:56football is. Last week, 52 snaps is all they
- 34:00got. So there wasn't a lot of, you
- 34:04know, there's wasn't many snaps. And then if you watch the game,
- 34:07they went through a stretch of offensive futility at a level
- 34:12that I don't know that I've seen in Nebraska.
- 34:14And it was, yeah, it was bad. It was, it was 25 plays and 19
- 34:20yards. And it spanned the second and
- 34:24into the third quarter, late into the late third quarter.
- 34:27When Sparty took the lead. Yeah, when Sparty took the lead.
- 34:30Yeah, yeah, yeah, you're right. Sparty took the lead at 21 to 14
- 34:36and then the only pass down field that Nebraska got all day.
- 34:41Dylan hit and Jacora Barney for a 45 yard pass and Nebraska
- 34:45scored a couple plays later in his Tide and the momentum
- 34:50shifted like that. Special special teams were
- 34:53great. Sip that punt block was a a
- 34:54scooping score. That was that was a thing of
- 34:56beauty. Hey, brother, we're out of time.
- 34:58We'll we'll talk to you next week in advance of the Friday
- 35:00night game up in the Twin Cities against the Gophers.
- 35:05Sip. Thanks for what you do for us,
- 35:06brother. Have a good trip out east and
