Transcript
- 0:00[SPEAKER_00]: one of the things that excites me the most about what we do at a week community is to give back freedom to someone that may have lost their freedom due to weight.
- 0:10[SPEAKER_00]: We want to be able to provide that to people.
- 0:26[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome everybody.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_01]: I'm your host, Izzy.
- 0:28[SPEAKER_01]: This is the red zone report.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_01]: And I am here to discuss Jim Leonard and what we learned from him here recently during OTAs.
- 0:35[SPEAKER_01]: And I see I got some comments in the bill that my man Lance Nelson president of built in Buffalo.
- 0:40[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome back.
- 0:49[SPEAKER_01]: welcome in and I hope you enjoy the show.
- 0:52[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm actually going to be breaking down defense specifically front seven for this show, a little bit of defensive back, but mostly front seven based on what we've learned because the big thing when we had ended the season and Sean McCormick
- 1:20[SPEAKER_01]: who shortly thereafter brought in Jim Leder to be his defensive coordinator.
- 1:25[SPEAKER_01]: We had a lot of questions, right?
- 1:27[SPEAKER_01]: We're going from a traditionally 425
- 1:31[SPEAKER_01]: normally running base 4-3 defense of Shomic Dermary.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_01]: Ben, but don't break, you know, a one-tech, a three-tech, two defensive ends, which were your edge rushers.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_01]: We had, you know, two linebackers in the field, usually with Terren Johnson as the nickel, which acted as the third linebacker.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_01]: The two linebacks in the field were generally our will and our mic.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_01]: When we were in base formation, you know, Dorian Williams would come in as our sand linebacker.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_01]: And then you had your DBs, you know, Christian Benford and Maxwell Harrison and Tray White, you know, something in for Maxwell Maxwell's heart, Cole Bishop and, you know, I safety Jordan Polier came in and took over, I have to tell a wrap went down.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_01]: The secondary isn't as much of a concern when it comes to the schematics of the defense, right?
- 2:17[SPEAKER_01]: They are going to be playing a lot more man coverage according to Jim Leonard and the way the scheme is supposed to work, the way it worked in Denver.
- 2:30[SPEAKER_01]: The front seven is really where the meat and potatoes is at.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_01]: That's where the difference is.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_01]: Differences, three down linemen versus four down linemen.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_01]: But, it's a five man front, meaning you're two outside linebackers.
- 2:43[SPEAKER_01]: Are your edge washers now?
- 2:45[SPEAKER_01]: One will often drop into coverage.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_01]: The other one will often rush.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_01]: Usually the one dropping into coverage is probably going to cover the flats, the curl flats.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_01]: your two inside linebackers will basically act as they did in Sean McDermott's defense coverage and then getting down hills, stop the run, but they're going to have a lot more help up front, especially with three down defensive tackles or defensive ends or nose tackles or whatever is you want to call them and I'm going to break that part down today.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_01]: So it might not be a long show.
- 3:17[SPEAKER_01]: It might be longer than I expect for it to be.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_01]: That is the meat potatoes and so I I got into my max off paint.
- 3:24[SPEAKER_01]: This is rudimentary, you know, but it is a visual representation of what this Buffalo bill's defense should look like schematically now Microsoft Roseboro back in the building, but my man Chris, glad to have you back as always.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_01]: But the structure of the defense.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_01]: When you look at.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_01]: A 43, you have your one tech and you have your three tech.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_01]: Your one tech's usually your big guy comparable to a nose tackle, your three tech, usually a smaller defensive tackle.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_01]: You used to penetrate the defense to try and get up field to stop the run and or get to the pass or your outside linebackers, your edge rushers, they usually try and seal or excuse me, your defensive ends in the 43 scheme will normally try and seal off the edges in a run play and get around the tackles in a pass play.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_01]: The three four defense you normally would have a big fat nose tackle in the middle.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_01]: you'd have two defensive ends around him and you'd have two outside linebackers.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_01]: Well, in this scheme, the outside linebackers are your edge rushers.
- 4:30[SPEAKER_01]: The defensive ends are basically bigger than they are in a three four, the three four defensive end, or a two, the four three defensive end are usually smaller.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_01]: They can get up there and size.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_01]: You may see a 285 pound guy like a mouse guy in three four three, excuse me, I keep mixing them up.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_01]: In a four three, you may see a mouse guy
- 4:51[SPEAKER_01]: He's big, he's huge, massive man.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_01]: But those guys are rare.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_01]: You're more likely to see the kill killel max.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_01]: The guys who are like 260, 260ish, like AJP and S.A.L.I.
- 5:03[SPEAKER_01]: Greg Russo.
- 5:04[SPEAKER_01]: Guys who are around that size range, tall and lean and bendy to an extent.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_01]: And in the three four, those guys are the outside linebackers.
- 5:14[SPEAKER_01]: And usually you want guys who are a little bit bendy here because they have a little more distance to cover because now you have three dudes in the middle and the edge rushers are on the outside.
- 5:26[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to pull up the old school three four defense we're not going to compare this to four three anymore because we've already covered that and what an old school three four defense would look like right I'm not talking about like a rich Ryan defense because rich Ryan ran more similar to what Jim Lairn's gonna run than what people thought he would run you know
- 5:48[SPEAKER_01]: Rex Ryan ran a movement based three or four defense whereas defensive linemen moved and stunted quite a bit.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_01]: The biggest defensive linemen on that line was Marcel Derris and he played defensive end.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_01]: He didn't played no stack.
- 5:59[SPEAKER_01]: That was Kyle Williams.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_01]: Kyle Williams didn't have any beef up to five, ten pounds from 305 to three, ten to three, 15.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_01]: So there's a big difference in how this is going to, you know, operate.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_01]: The last time we ran one of those two
- 6:16[SPEAKER_01]: way back.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_01]: Late Mondays.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_01]: What's good is he?
- 6:20[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, how you doing Joey?
- 6:21[SPEAKER_01]: For Man Joey in the building?
- 6:23[SPEAKER_01]: Michael DeBella, good evening, all.
- 6:25[SPEAKER_01]: Good evening, Joe.
- 6:26[SPEAKER_01]: Michael from Angel.
- 6:28[SPEAKER_01]: How are my Buffalo bills brothers and sisters today?
- 6:30[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I'm doing pretty good.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_01]: I hope the rest of them respond to you in the audience.
- 6:35[SPEAKER_01]: Feel free guys to chat away.
- 6:36[SPEAKER_01]: I'm here to talk to you guys and get this show on the road.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_01]: So without further ado, I'm going to bring up my rudimentary first image covering an old school three four and what the players on the team would be identified in such a scheme.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_01]: So like in an old school, Wade Phillips style, three, four defense.
- 6:54[SPEAKER_01]: This is what you're looking at.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_01]: You have your basic power eye offense right here, which is when you'll be in base formation.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_01]: You have two receivers and was it's 12 personnel, right?
- 7:07[SPEAKER_01]: So you have two guys in the back field, a full back and a half back.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_01]: You have a tight end, 12 personnel.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_01]: Then you have two outer receivers and then your five linemen in your quarterback.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_01]: If you look here between the offensive linemen, outside the tackles, you see gap.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_01]: Inside your tackling guard is your B gap.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_01]: What's when your guard in center is your A gap, and then on the other side it does the same thing.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_01]: Between center and guard, A gap, if you guard in tackled B gap, outside the tackles is your C gap between the tackling tight end.
- 7:43[SPEAKER_01]: Then just above, I don't know if you guys are able to zoom in this video.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_01]: Defensive linemen or edge rushers who line up outside of the tackle are your five tech right this is on the weak side only right was no tight in there so you there's no additional gap outside the tight end Your five tech lines up out there your four tech lines up directly over the tackle your four eyed lines up a shade inside the offensive tackles shoulder Your three tech lines up just outside the guards shoulder your two tech lines up straight up over the guard
- 8:18[SPEAKER_01]: your one tech lines up in the A gap directly over the center would be your zero tech or your nose tackle and then it repeats going the other way but once you get to the tight end after the tackle is your five tech then you have your six eye so a dead rush who lines up there would be playing a six eye technique technique.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_01]: Directly over the tight end, six tech outside the tight end, seven tech.
- 8:43[SPEAKER_01]: So your nickname is Nick, nick, nick, needles of the world, you know, who line up wide and then, you know, crashing and bend to get around.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_01]: And he'll also pay five on the other side too, but just for the for the visual representation of what this is, right?
- 8:59[SPEAKER_01]: In a traditional three, four defense defensive end, nose tackle defensive end, those are your three down linemen.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_01]: you'll have your on the ball line backers, your edge rusher, so to speak, your jackbacker on the left, which is your weekside and then your strong side line backer, your Sam on the right.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_01]: Those are your edge rusher's and the three, four defense, the way it is communicated is a little more complex than the way Jim Leonard is gonna communicate it, right?
- 9:28[SPEAKER_01]: So those two guys, your jack and your Sam are your outside linebackers.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_01]: I've had to do a bunch of research on this
- 9:35[SPEAKER_01]: get all this down.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_01]: But it is what it is.
- 9:39[SPEAKER_01]: Now, at linebacker, you'll have your will and your middle linebacker and they will switch sides depending on which side of the formation is the weak side.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_01]: In this instance, the right side that we're looking for them from the quarterbacks perspective looking towards the line.
- 9:54[SPEAKER_01]: The right sides of the tight end is that is your strong side.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_01]: So your Sam is over there.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_01]: Your wills on the left, your mic is on the right side of the interior, deepensive line, you know, interior, but it's intermediate.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_01]: Then you have your two corners on the outside and you have your two safety's.
- 10:11[SPEAKER_01]: You're free in your strong.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_01]: In this one, looks like it's a cover two look because your two safety's are both playing deep.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_01]: Your corners are directly over the receivers.
- 10:21[SPEAKER_01]: So this could be cover two man.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_01]: This could be cover two zone.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_01]: could be covered six, could be covered nine, could be a bunch of different things, but as of right now, the look is covered two.
- 10:30[SPEAKER_01]: We're just going to keep it simple.
- 10:34[SPEAKER_01]: Out of this formation, you'll see a lot of run plays and usually short to intermediate passes.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_01]: You can get deep in this formation of offense, but it is what it is.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_01]: This is your old school weight fillups type defense.
- 10:49[SPEAKER_01]: This is what you guys will see.
- 10:51[SPEAKER_01]: When you do have a Vince Will fork, no, Bill Bell check, another example.
- 10:57[SPEAKER_01]: You got a Vince Will fork there.
- 10:59[SPEAKER_01]: And then you have, you know, two big bastards in the outside.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_01]: That's your three, four, old school, two gap defense.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_01]: Let's see, Sergeant O'King, happy Sunday, bra.
- 11:10[SPEAKER_01]: Michael DeBella, okay, thank you.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_01]: and the you, and to you, I'm guessing, is what you mean.
- 11:17[SPEAKER_01]: What up, go bills, go bills, baby, let's go.
- 11:20[SPEAKER_01]: See, this unit is going to play a lot of 4-3 under and 4-3 over with the person that we have.
- 11:26[SPEAKER_01]: They look very similar to a 3-4.
- 11:28[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, exactly.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_01]: Because of the person that we have, we'll probably play more of that, which is why we only have one player on the roster, listed as a defensive end, even though at Oliver's probably going to be playing end.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_01]: According to the language of this scheme right here, I'm showing you at always be playing end.
- 11:50[SPEAKER_01]: No stack was probably going to be the unwalker, but they're again, they're going to move these guys around.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_01]: So again, a movement based 340 fence.
- 11:58[SPEAKER_01]: This is not what that is.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_01]: This right here is everybody's fixed.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody's got their position.
- 12:02[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody does their job the way the scheme designs it to be.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_01]: Jim Leonard is going to be running a defense that is similar in structure but not the same in functionality.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_01]: I wonder if Duane Carter or Landon Jackson must link up with the bill stop the run.
- 12:23[SPEAKER_01]: Very possible.
- 12:25[SPEAKER_01]: I think that when we do go into looks like this defense that I'm showing you right now,
- 12:29[SPEAKER_01]: that it's very possible that doing card it could be the guy who to go in there at nose tackle and take those reps because the unwalkers not really the best against the double team then again in a three four the nose tackle job is really the eat blocks away everybody else can kind of get free.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if the unwalkers can be effective at that.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_01]: So you have a guy like Dwayne Carter who's going to beef up to 330 pounds or who has beef up to 330 pounds and is looking to take that spot.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_01]: I've heard Dion Walker is losing fat and trying to muscle up also.
- 13:00[SPEAKER_01]: That's what I heard as well.
- 13:04[SPEAKER_01]: Hopefully fast.
- 13:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, hopefully fast.
- 13:06[SPEAKER_01]: See, Lannon Jackson is labeled as a defenseman.
- 13:09[SPEAKER_01]: He is and he, according to this chart here or this schematic here, he will be a defense event.
- 13:15[SPEAKER_01]: He will not be a, a, a, a, a, a, a, he's going to be a, he's beefing up to to 85 for a reason.
- 13:22[SPEAKER_01]: Because in a three four scheme, your defensive ends will be 280 to like 310, 315 pounds.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_01]: Your nose tackle in a traditional three four is going to be like 315 to 330.
- 13:34[SPEAKER_01]: So it just depends.
- 13:35[SPEAKER_01]: At all, it was already like 287.
- 13:37[SPEAKER_01]: So he's already fitting the bill there.
- 13:38[SPEAKER_01]: Also, TJ Sanders is like 295.
- 13:40[SPEAKER_01]: So he's already fitting the bill there.
- 13:42[SPEAKER_01]: There's already a ton of guys who fit that defensive line.
- 13:45[SPEAKER_01]: The question is, where are these reps coming from?
- 13:51[SPEAKER_01]: to what happens if key on Coleman breaks out, doubt it, but you never know.
- 13:55[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not sure, but I think that that's what they're hoping for, is that the key on Coleman breaks out.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_01]: Then you have a nice, you know, why receive a group in Klooshikir, DJ Moore, key on Coleman, and then you have behind them developing Skyler Bell, who once DJ Moore's contract is up or the ones that both are ready to move on from DJ Moore,
- 14:23[SPEAKER_01]: TJ Parker and Bradley Chub will be big upgrades against the run where Bosa was a library.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_01]: Bosa was and so was impenetra.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_01]: Appenetra was not great against the run.
- 14:30[SPEAKER_01]: He was solid against the run and he was solid, you know, as a rotational pass pressure.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_01]: But that's what the Japanese is.
- 14:38[SPEAKER_01]: He's a rotational past Russia.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_01]: He's not your star player.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_01]: He's the guy who's going to go in there, and he's going to get you six and a half sex a year, which is a good thing.
- 14:45[SPEAKER_01]: Right?
- 14:46[SPEAKER_01]: If you're a rotational guy, you'll almost always have a job.
- 14:49[SPEAKER_01]: He doesn't have a job right now, which is why I said, almost, he should have a job, but apparently he failed as physical.
- 14:54[SPEAKER_01]: So we'll see if the problems you revisit that.
- 14:56[SPEAKER_01]: Now that they've traded away Miles Garrett and Jared versus there, maybe they're going to need some guy who can go in there and back him up.
- 15:07[SPEAKER_01]: See how Landon Jackson is the kind of defensive player at L.C.
- 15:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he was this kind of defensive player at L.C.
- 15:15[SPEAKER_01]: He was 25 years big and his junior year at Arkansas.
- 15:20[SPEAKER_01]: teammates said Solomon is massive weight for his son.
- 15:27[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not sure what you're trying to say here.
- 15:30[SPEAKER_01]: teammates said Solomon lifts massive weight for his size.
- 15:35[SPEAKER_01]: That was a shocker to me.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_01]: Michael Houghty should be rid of training camp.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_01]: I cannot wait to see how Michael Houghty looks in his defense.
- 15:43[SPEAKER_01]: The way Rick's Ryan used the Venezuela Exander.
- 15:45[SPEAKER_01]: I would expect Jim Leonard to use Michael Houghty.
- 15:48[SPEAKER_01]: He'll rotate in there on the inside at linebacker.
- 15:51[SPEAKER_01]: He'll rotate in there on the outside at linebacker.
- 15:53[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to be a guy that they use as a Swiss Army knife.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_01]: Past pressure from the inside from the outside from all over the place.
- 16:00[SPEAKER_01]: So I cannot wait.
- 16:06[SPEAKER_01]: lifts massive weight for a size.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, gotcha.
- 16:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, poor versus miserable right now from contender to progatory from Super Bowl favorite to first round draft pick favorite.
- 16:19[SPEAKER_01]: Like you went from 1 to 31, 1 to 32.
- 16:24[SPEAKER_01]: It's a rough move, but hey, you know what, make that money man, make that money.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_01]: Miles Gary had to do it, so while I feel bad for a verse, I feel that much better for Miles Gary, although I hate it because now we might have to see the Rams and Superbowl if we get there.
- 16:39[SPEAKER_01]: That is terrifying, especially if AD decides to come out of retirement.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_01]: All right, so.
- 16:46[SPEAKER_01]: Now we're going to move to the three four scheme of Jim Leonard, and you'll notice some differences.
- 16:51[SPEAKER_01]: You're not going to notice any differences in the gaps, those are all the same.
- 16:53[SPEAKER_01]: You're not going to notice any differences in the techniques, those are all the same.
- 16:57[SPEAKER_01]: As you see, I have the receivers labeled as X and Y.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_01]: Those are two receivers out there, so those are only two receivers that will be out there.
- 17:03[SPEAKER_01]: If the receiver on the left on the right was on the left in duo, then he would likely be the Z, which is their slot.
- 17:15[SPEAKER_01]: All right, so we're going to remove this, bring this up and here we go.
- 17:19[SPEAKER_01]: Here's the Jim Leonard defense.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_01]: As you can see, the defensive line has shifted to the left a little bit.
- 17:24[SPEAKER_01]: Looking more like when a man said was a 4, 3 over or under, right?
- 17:29[SPEAKER_01]: So you have your edge rush over here.
- 17:30[SPEAKER_01]: You have your 3 down linemen.
- 17:32[SPEAKER_01]: You have your edge rush over here.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_01]: The 4 3 over would be your left defensive and your left as rush or defensive linemen defensive linemen defensive linemen notice how all these guys on the line your three guys are no longer defensive and nose tackle defensive and they're now defensive line because those guys are all going to switch places often they're going to stun they're going to move around they're going to be You know In motion quite a bit to confuse offensive lines so they don't know where the pressure's coming from now
- 18:07[SPEAKER_01]: Left or right edge, D line, D line, D line.
- 18:10[SPEAKER_01]: Your other edge is your linebacker, so to speak, right?
- 18:15[SPEAKER_01]: In the fourth or three over.
- 18:17[SPEAKER_01]: Or see it in the fourth or three under.
- 18:19[SPEAKER_01]: In the fourth or three over, it would be the other way.
- 18:22[SPEAKER_01]: So have your will and your mic.
- 18:24[SPEAKER_01]: Then you look at your receivers.
- 18:26[SPEAKER_01]: You have your X and your Y. I didn't label on this one for some reason, must have mixed that up, but it's okay.
- 18:31[SPEAKER_01]: This one's still in cover two.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_01]: I wanted to keep the defense in the same,
- 18:35[SPEAKER_01]: coverage scheme, so that way it was not so confusing.
- 18:39[SPEAKER_01]: In the nickel formations, I have it more in a cover one or cover three.
- 18:46[SPEAKER_01]: Look.
- 18:49[SPEAKER_01]: See, they said Miles Garrett took a pay cut as well.
- 18:52[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, you go from the Browns to the Rams.
- 18:55[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_01]: You might be willing to do that.
- 18:57[SPEAKER_01]: First of all, you're living in LA, which is much nicer city.
- 19:04[SPEAKER_01]: Was there this human man Scott me and my wife went up there when we got together with Scott from built in Buffalo's on triple coverage on Thursdays, so check them out Scott to party dude.
- 19:14[SPEAKER_01]: And he brings a posse.
- 19:16[SPEAKER_01]: He brings a freaking posse.
- 19:18[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, they said, Miles Garrett took a picture.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_01]: That's smart.
- 19:22[SPEAKER_01]: And he wouldn't take a picture of the Brown.
- 19:24[SPEAKER_01]: So shows you, you know, what going to a container will do.
- 19:28[SPEAKER_01]: Caleb E-Larm's or inside linebacker has impressed.
- 19:31[SPEAKER_01]: He has been impressing and he will definitely compete with Dorian Williams for the starting spot there.
- 19:36[SPEAKER_01]: I'm happy he's impressing because you don't want your draft picks to not impress.
- 19:39[SPEAKER_01]: I guess it's just a waste of resources.
- 19:42[SPEAKER_01]: So Jim Leonard has a nickname of Silent Assassin.
- 19:46[SPEAKER_01]: I like that.
- 19:48[SPEAKER_01]: I do, but I like that nickname more for James Cook.
- 19:53[SPEAKER_01]: Just saying, this feels more like a James Cook nickname.
- 19:56[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway,
- 19:58[SPEAKER_01]: California has got the largest jack tax in the United States.
- 20:02[SPEAKER_01]: They do, but it's also beautiful there, you know.
- 20:08[SPEAKER_01]: It is what it is, like the natural scenery of California's beautiful.
- 20:13[SPEAKER_01]: So they may have a big tax there, but again, you're going to contender and you're going to a more beautiful place.
- 20:20[SPEAKER_01]: It is what it is.
- 20:24[SPEAKER_01]: Now as you'll see, the defensive line is shifted towards the
- 20:30[SPEAKER_01]: Right, the shit in terms of the week side, you have your four eye as your first defensive lineman to the left.
- 20:37[SPEAKER_01]: You have your zero tech slash shade.
- 20:43[SPEAKER_01]: He's not directly over the center.
- 20:44[SPEAKER_01]: He's over the shoulder of the center, which they call a shade, right?
- 20:48[SPEAKER_01]: Instead of playing zero nose tackle.
- 20:52[SPEAKER_01]: You shade over the center's shoulder and that's how I believe it's Jonathan Allen for the Broncos played last year.
- 20:58[SPEAKER_01]: He wasn't an over the center kind of guy either and Jim Leonard said that in his is remarks during his press conference.
- 21:05[SPEAKER_01]: And so the unwelker or T. to centers or Duane Carter, whoever it is will likely be in a shade position on the defensive line, likely not directly in the zero spot.
- 21:18[SPEAKER_01]: And then you're other guy.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_01]: 4i, right?
- 21:21[SPEAKER_01]: So you have your 4-tech 5-tech on the other side.
- 21:24[SPEAKER_01]: You have your 4i on the right, and then you have your edge pressures.
- 21:31[SPEAKER_01]: Your linebackers, they will move around.
- 21:33[SPEAKER_01]: Right?
- 21:34[SPEAKER_01]: This is just where the formation base starts.
- 21:38[SPEAKER_01]: These players will move around.
- 21:39[SPEAKER_01]: They'll show blitz and move up into those gaps.
- 21:41[SPEAKER_01]: They'll show blitz and they'll move into
- 21:45[SPEAKER_01]: If they think it's a pass play and they decide to sell out for the pass, they'll those linebackers will move outside or move outward.
- 21:54[SPEAKER_01]: In order to cover more ground, if they think it's a run play, they may stay in the middle there because you now have two edge rushers, along with three down linemen to cover the run.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_01]: So theoretically, this should be better against the run.
- 22:06[SPEAKER_01]: Then you have your two safety's deep.
- 22:08[SPEAKER_01]: See, you're going to Johnson, coal bishop, your outside corners.
- 22:16[SPEAKER_01]: Christian Benford, CB43.
- 22:18[SPEAKER_01]: Of course, assuming CB47.
- 22:23[SPEAKER_01]: This is the base.
- 22:24[SPEAKER_01]: This will be something the bills are in 30 to 35% of the time because most offenses are running in three receiver or more sets most of the time.
- 22:34[SPEAKER_01]: So I didn't go out to dime, right, a little more complicated and I haven't done enough research to see if they'd run a 415 or it's going to be a 416 or a 326 or a 236 or however they decide to pony up those players, but.
- 22:54[SPEAKER_01]: have the nickel and I have the base.
- 22:57[SPEAKER_01]: This is the base.
- 22:58[SPEAKER_01]: The previous was the base three four old school.
- 23:01[SPEAKER_01]: This is the base three four gym Leonard.
- 23:03[SPEAKER_01]: Also remember Rex Ryan's defense was known as an exotic three four.
- 23:09[SPEAKER_01]: It's the style moved on to a movement base three four, which I think exotic is better because it's less words, right?
- 23:15[SPEAKER_01]: Why are we adding words and syllables, you know, for the same type of idea?
- 23:19[SPEAKER_01]: It's called exotic.
- 23:20[SPEAKER_01]: It is what it is.
- 23:21[SPEAKER_01]: But I think they changed the name because it's no longer as exotic as it was because a lot of people are running more similar defenses to this now, like Seattle did this year, Denver ran this year now the bills are running it, the Eagles run a three four similar to this, but they do have a big fat bastard in the middle.
- 23:36[SPEAKER_01]: They have a Jordan Davis.
- 23:37[SPEAKER_01]: They had they got that big guy.
- 23:39[SPEAKER_01]: So we'll see what happens, but now I'm going to move on to the old school nickel formation for a three four based defense, likely not what the bill is going to be running.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, likely how the bill's going to be running.
- 23:53[SPEAKER_01]: They're likely to be running something different.
- 23:55[SPEAKER_01]: Now they could run this still.
- 23:57[SPEAKER_01]: They may sprinkle some of this in there, a little bit, right?
- 24:00[SPEAKER_01]: So you have your defensive end, your nose tackle, your defensive end.
- 24:04[SPEAKER_01]: That's based just off to three, four.
- 24:07[SPEAKER_01]: You have one linebacker in the middle, so you have your mic, so you have your jack, your mic, and your, and your sam.
- 24:13[SPEAKER_01]: In this one, you can see we have a safety cheating down into the linebacker spot where the will would be.
- 24:21[SPEAKER_01]: This would indicate that he is a box safety, normally you're strong safety, Jordan Poir, Gibralp peppers, TJ Gardner Johnson in our scheme now.
- 24:32[SPEAKER_01]: This guy's going to be watching for the run and then covering tight ends coming across the field.
- 24:37[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to have more of a shallow route kind of, you know, concept to what he's going to be looking for.
- 24:47[SPEAKER_01]: The defensive line is going to operate very much the same as it does in base, but the line backers on the outside.
- 24:55[SPEAKER_01]: One will almost always definitely be dropping the coverage in the 335.
- 24:58[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, almost always.
- 25:02[SPEAKER_01]: Just is what it is.
- 25:03[SPEAKER_01]: So you you probably have a Javan solvent out there when he's because he's smaller and quicker, but then again, if he does
- 25:13[SPEAKER_01]: He made earn some reps.
- 25:15[SPEAKER_01]: I like that.
- 25:15[SPEAKER_01]: Sound the alarm.
- 25:16[SPEAKER_01]: Let's go.
- 25:16[SPEAKER_01]: No bones about it.
- 25:18[SPEAKER_01]: I like that.
- 25:19[SPEAKER_01]: So he's reached out to my friend that meal prep.
- 25:22[SPEAKER_01]: He's trying to get right a set.
- 25:24[SPEAKER_01]: She also caters.
- 25:25[SPEAKER_01]: Cool.
- 25:26[SPEAKER_01]: Hell yeah.
- 25:29[SPEAKER_01]: See, I've been hearing a lot of positive news about our new DB from Ohio State.
- 25:32[SPEAKER_01]: I've been hearing a lot about IGB as well.
- 25:35[SPEAKER_01]: He's not going to sit lightly while Maxwell Harrison just gets the job.
- 25:39[SPEAKER_01]: Granted, Maxwell Harrison does have the job as a right now, as the first round pick from last year, but if you get out perform, you get out perform.
- 25:46[SPEAKER_01]: We've seen Kair Ilham get dog walk by Christian Benford for a job.
- 25:51[SPEAKER_01]: Do I think that, Maxwell先生 is going to get dog walk by IGB?
- 25:56[SPEAKER_01]: No, but I do think Davison Ignosen is a more physical stock corner.
- 26:01[SPEAKER_01]: He does have speed and while he did have a lot of penalties in his junior year at Ohio State, he's last year at Ohio State.
- 26:09[SPEAKER_01]: He played much better and brought those penalties from 12 to 4.
- 26:13[SPEAKER_01]: So, something to watch out for, something to watch out for.
- 26:18[SPEAKER_01]: But as you see, I got the receivers listed here to you have your ex on the left right he's on lined up on the line he's your ex receiver he's the only receiver on that side he's not the only weapon on the side the the half back is lined up on that side of the formation right so you can see
- 26:43[SPEAKER_01]: You've got your tight end, you've got your Z, which is your slot, ClipshaCare as a right now and your Y, Keyon Coleman, Scatter Bell, whoever plays Y or you may see ClipshaCare out there playing the Y and you may see Keyon Coleman at DZ.
- 26:59[SPEAKER_01]: So there's a lot of different variations of this offense can do, but this offensive scheme isn't based on the Buffalo Bills offense.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_01]: This is just a generic offense that I put in an air shot on double flex formation, the 11 personnel, just to give an idea as to what the old school 335 Nickel defense would be based on a 34 scheme.
- 27:19[SPEAKER_01]: Now, a 34 scheme is gonna be a little different.
- 27:23[SPEAKER_01]: We've already covered that.
- 27:24[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to look more like a 4-3 over, or 4-3 under at times, depending on what the tight end is, you will have the strong side, be one side or the other, and the line backers, and edge rushers will adjust accordingly as well the defensive line, but as the right now, that's what it looks like.
- 27:51[SPEAKER_01]: which is very similar to the 425 defense that we've been running.
- 27:55[SPEAKER_01]: We've been running the 425 defense, which just means you have two defensive tackles, two defensive ends, two linebackers, two safety's three corners, that's it, right?
- 28:04[SPEAKER_01]: With this, you have two defensive linemen, two edge rushers,
- 28:09[SPEAKER_01]: differences.
- 28:09[SPEAKER_01]: These guys will have their hands off the ground if they're comfortable with that.
- 28:13[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe they'll put the hand in the dirt.
- 28:14[SPEAKER_01]: I guess that might be up to them and or Jim Leonard and their linebackers coach, their edge rushers coach.
- 28:20[SPEAKER_01]: But it does look different than the previous.
- 28:25[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 28:27[SPEAKER_01]: Here you have your two edge rushers, two defensive linemen, two linebackers.
- 28:31[SPEAKER_01]: Same as the 425.
- 28:34[SPEAKER_01]: This one I also ran a single high safety look, which means you're looking at a cover one, looking at cover three, generally speaking.
- 28:42[SPEAKER_01]: You could run other schemes like cover six, cover nine, out of this as well, but that puts your strong safety in position to have to cover a lot of ground.
- 28:53[SPEAKER_01]: Granted, we have CJ Garner Donson who can do that.
- 28:56[SPEAKER_01]: So we do have the personnel to run this in such a way, excuse my alarm here.
- 29:04[SPEAKER_01]: Now, you have your nickel back on the Z, you have your outside corners covering your X and your Y, that's all standard procedure, right?
- 29:11[SPEAKER_01]: Whether they're bumping and run, this show isn't really covering that, this show is covering what schematically on paper, like what you should be looking for and seeing and what you call the players, right?
- 29:24[SPEAKER_01]: That's the whole point of this exercise.
- 29:25[SPEAKER_01]: It's not
- 29:30[SPEAKER_01]: say what we can will and won't do, right?
- 29:32[SPEAKER_01]: You'll see a lot of stunts out of this too.
- 29:33[SPEAKER_01]: You'll see a lot of, you know, five-tech edge pressure on the right, sneaking on the inside and rushing from the inside.
- 29:43[SPEAKER_01]: You'll see a lot of, you know, contains, and you'll see a lot of edge ceiling out of this.
- 29:51[SPEAKER_01]: But schematically, it's similar to the 45.
- 30:00[SPEAKER_01]: or this type of formation and run different schemes out of it.
- 30:03[SPEAKER_01]: This isn't like some static thing where, oh my God, you can drop that strong safety back.
- 30:08[SPEAKER_01]: Now you're in cover two, cover two man, cover two zone, cover six, cover nine, all types of different defenses that you can run out of that.
- 30:16[SPEAKER_01]: You could bring your other safety down close to the box two, run cover zero.
- 30:21[SPEAKER_01]: Or you can run a cover zero look, which are safeties.
- 30:23[SPEAKER_01]: You're then going to cover deep.
- 30:25[SPEAKER_01]: And you do have two fast safeties who can then fake like they're going to play the run and then cover up high.
- 30:33[SPEAKER_01]: We have those players at safety.
- 30:35[SPEAKER_01]: The secondary doesn't really worry me too much.
- 30:38[SPEAKER_01]: It did before we drafted IGB.
- 30:41[SPEAKER_01]: I was skeptical of the pick of IGB.
- 30:43[SPEAKER_01]: Now I'm less skeptical of it because I'm not worried about the secondary at all.
- 30:50[SPEAKER_01]: CJ Garner Johnson, Cole Bishop, Christian Benford, Max Hirsten, IGB.
- 30:56[SPEAKER_01]: I still think that they'll bring in a veteran corner.
- 30:58[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe a tray white.
- 30:59[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe not.
- 31:00[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe they want somebody who's more man-covered versed.
- 31:03[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 31:04[SPEAKER_01]: They could bring in a tray white, just to bring in a guy who can help run zone concepts.
- 31:09[SPEAKER_01]: I think as you don't want to put him out there every time you run his own, because that's a dead giveaway.
- 31:13[SPEAKER_01]: But!
- 31:18[SPEAKER_01]: This right here is what you'll be seeing basically.
- 31:24[SPEAKER_01]: Just look at the linebackers and the defensive linemen and the edge rushers, and that's the picture you should look at.
- 31:29[SPEAKER_01]: So when you're looking at Greg Russo and Bradley Chub, you can call them linebackers if you want to, but you're just over-complicating the situation.
- 31:36[SPEAKER_01]: So to simplify things, they are edge rushers.
- 31:39[SPEAKER_01]: That's what Jim Leonard said in his press conference, everybody else is a defensive lineman, and his words not mine.
- 31:48[SPEAKER_01]: Inside of the tackle box, you are defensive tackle, right?
- 31:55[SPEAKER_01]: So if you're not playing five tech, like outside, then you're playing four tech, where you're playing four eye.
- 32:07[SPEAKER_01]: There may be sometimes we run wide alignments and if they run wide alignments, you're gonna have some moments where
- 32:15[SPEAKER_01]: the defensive line might be in a five-text spot.
- 32:19[SPEAKER_01]: You might be running something like a double mug.
- 32:23[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I'm not sure how that works in the three four, but I'm guessing one of the edge Russians kind of plays a role and comes onto the line like in this from here and those two linebackers will come in the middle of those two defensive linemen.
- 32:36[SPEAKER_01]: How you do that in a base formation?
- 32:38[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if that's really something to do.
- 32:40[SPEAKER_01]: I think you just fill in the gaps.
- 32:42[SPEAKER_01]: Like a run or fake fake the blitz and then fall back in the coverage you see that you'll see that a lot
- 32:53[SPEAKER_01]: But at least I can give you what these players are going to be called, where your gaps are, where your techniques for the defensive line are.
- 33:02[SPEAKER_01]: And whenever they're lined up in a certain spot, what they're actually playing.
- 33:05[SPEAKER_01]: Because no one's going to be, I'm just a five-tech, no you're not.
- 33:09[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just a nose tackle, no you're not.
- 33:13[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just a one-tech, no you're not.
- 33:15[SPEAKER_01]: There's going to be times where you're playing in the one.
- 33:16[SPEAKER_01]: There's going to be times where you're playing in the two,
- 33:21[SPEAKER_01]: Now, you probably won't see many of our defensive linemen playing outside the tight end.
- 33:25[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to be your edge rushers.
- 33:28[SPEAKER_01]: Between the fives is where your defensive linemen are.
- 33:32[SPEAKER_01]: Your defensive tackles, all the land ejections listed as defensive end, which further complicate things to people who don't really know how this works.
- 33:42[SPEAKER_01]: He's technically a defensive tackle.
- 33:46[SPEAKER_01]: Will you running much at no tackle, not likely, could he play inside a little bit if you want to, you know, rush the pastor from the middle probably could put him in, you know, the hands of a lot of big big boys, but.
- 34:00[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not a defensive coordinator.
- 34:02[SPEAKER_01]: I don't make decisions.
- 34:03[SPEAKER_01]: I just observe and then try to understand.
- 34:05[SPEAKER_01]: And that's what this video is about.
- 34:06[SPEAKER_01]: It's me trying to understand.
- 34:07[SPEAKER_01]: And me trying to help you understand.
- 34:09[SPEAKER_01]: So today, and all week, studying the differences and nuances, listening to the content creators out there, the air and queens, the jomorinos, the people who really know exes knows, which I didn't use exes knows.
- 34:21[SPEAKER_01]: I use squares knows, who cares?
- 34:27[SPEAKER_01]: Those guys who really, really, really know and they just know the top of their head and don't have to write it down.
- 34:31[SPEAKER_01]: I gotta write it down, right?
- 34:33[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a football guy.
- 34:35[SPEAKER_01]: I love ball, but I'm not as knowledgeable as guys like that.
- 34:40[SPEAKER_01]: I know what I know and I share what I know.
- 34:44[SPEAKER_01]: This right here, it's gonna be fun to watch.
- 34:47[SPEAKER_01]: We fund the watch, the growth, and the development players.
- 34:50[SPEAKER_01]: Guys like TJ Sanders, I'm interested in seeing how they're going to fit.
- 34:53[SPEAKER_01]: Guys like Dion Walker, I'm interested in seeing how much further he can push his potential.
- 34:58[SPEAKER_01]: Guys like at Oliver, I'm interested in seeing how much havoc he can wreak at the four eye at a five tech at a four tech one on one.
- 35:08[SPEAKER_01]: I cannot wait to see how this defense creates one-on-one situations for guys like Ed Oliver and Dion Walker and how guys like Duane Carter are going to help by eating a blocks in the middle and how guys at Lenin Jackson are going to develop because it wasn't great last year for Lenin Jackson, but he was playing a 265 pounds with a 4 through scheme that didn't really suit what he's really built to do.
- 35:32[SPEAKER_01]: So guys, that is my show today.
- 35:35[SPEAKER_01]: I told you guys it probably wouldn't be
- 35:39[SPEAKER_01]: I hope this was informative.
- 35:41[SPEAKER_01]: I hope that you guys learned along with me.
- 35:44[SPEAKER_01]: And I hope that, you know, you guys look at training camp and the pre-season with Kenarize, right?
- 35:56[SPEAKER_01]: Because when watching the guys like Anne Quinn and Joe Marino and those guys who know ball and they'll put game footage on the screen,
- 36:05[SPEAKER_01]: It's hard for some people to identify what is actually happening on the screen because a lot of times you have the alt 22 and you'll see the guys but they'll be running in some exotic package.
- 36:14[SPEAKER_01]: You won't know, right?
- 36:17[SPEAKER_01]: Who they are, especially if you can't see their number like, oh, where's Benito?
- 36:20[SPEAKER_01]: You can't see him because there's a tackle blocking your vision from where he's at, right?
- 36:24[SPEAKER_01]: So they're showing you Broncos footage and you don't see him until after the thing, you know, like, now you gotta go back.
- 36:29[SPEAKER_01]: Some people just want to, you know, a simple breakdown.
- 36:31[SPEAKER_01]: And that's what this is.
- 36:32[SPEAKER_01]: It's to simplify the breakdowns from like a Joe Marino or an Aaron Quinn to give you an idea, quintessentially about what this is going to be.
- 36:40[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 36:42[SPEAKER_01]: So guys, that is my show.
- 36:44[SPEAKER_01]: I love you all very much.
- 36:45[SPEAKER_01]: I hope you guys took this and understood it.
- 36:50[SPEAKER_01]: God bless you all.
- 36:52[SPEAKER_01]: As you know, I've been on my journey into my faith,
- 36:58[SPEAKER_01]: Do good, be good, god bless and go bills, crisis king, enjoy the rest of your Sunday.
