- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday, it's the 21st of
- 0:16May. And how good are you taking a
- 0:19moment in the midst of the busyness of your day to say,
- 0:22come on Sean, let's read that next chapter of Acts.
- 0:26Let's see what God has in store for His church as it begins to
- 0:30grow. And when we think of church, we
- 0:32think of buildings and services. But back in this day it was this
- 0:37group of new believers whose minds were blown by what Jesus
- 0:41had done for them. Heard the Holy Spirit
- 0:43transforming them into this community that just put others
- 0:471st and not their own selfish needs.
- 0:50Not selfish needs, but their own self centred needs, which
- 0:54frankly in a brutal place like the Roman Empire in the 1st
- 0:57century, it was hard to survive. So the fact that people just
- 1:00look beyond themselves to others is absolutely miraculous.
- 1:05And it's in the midst of this that we today will hear this
- 1:08incredible story of God being so active and shaking things up.
- 1:14It's a story that you have heard.
- 1:16Well, I'm assuming that because it's such a famous one, and it's
- 1:20one that will eventually get them into a little bit of
- 1:22trouble and starts to stir the hornet's nest.
- 1:25So let's read this wonderful story together, friends.
- 1:27In Acts chapter 3, Peter and John went to the
- 1:41temple one afternoon to take part in the 3:00 prayer service.
- 1:45As they approached the temple, a man lame from birth was being
- 1:49carried in. Each day he was put beside the
- 1:52temple gate, the one called the Beautiful gate, so he could beg
- 1:56from the people going into the temple.
- 1:58When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for some
- 2:02money. Peter and John looked at him
- 2:05intently and Peter said, Look at us.
- 2:08The lame man looked at them eagerly, expecting some money.
- 2:12But Peter said, I don't have any silver or gold for you, but I'll
- 2:17give you what I have in the name of Jesus Christ, the Nazarene,
- 2:21get up and walk. Then Peter took the lame man by
- 2:25the right hand and helped him up, and as he did, the man's
- 2:30feet and ankles were instantly healed and strengthened.
- 2:34He jumped up, stood on his feet and began to walk.
- 2:38Then walking, leaping and praising God, he went into the
- 2:42temple with them. All the people saw him walking
- 2:46and heard him praising God. When they realised he was the
- 2:49lame beggar they had seen so often at the beautiful gate,
- 2:52they were absolutely astounded. They all rushed out in amazement
- 2:57to Solomon's colonnade, where the man was holding tightly to
- 3:00Peter and John. Peter saw his opportunity and
- 3:04addressed the crowd, people of Israel.
- 3:06He said. What is so surprising about this
- 3:09and why stare at us as though we had made this man walk by our
- 3:14own power or godliness? For it is the God of Abraham,
- 3:18Isaac and Jacob, the God of all our ancestors, who has brought
- 3:23glory to his servant Jesus by doing this.
- 3:26This is the same Jesus whom you handed over and rejected before
- 3:31Pilate. Despite Pilate's decision to
- 3:34release him. You rejected this holy righteous
- 3:38one and instead demanded the release of a murderer.
- 3:42You killed the Author of life, but God raised him from the dead
- 3:48and we are witnesses of this fact.
- 3:50Through faith in the name of Jesus, this man was healed, and
- 3:55you know how crippled he was before.
- 3:57Faith in Jesus name has healed him before your very eyes.
- 4:02Friends, I realise that what you and your leaders did to Jesus
- 4:05was done in ignorance, but God was fulfilling what all the
- 4:09prophets had foretold about the Messiah, that he must suffer
- 4:13these things now. Repent of your sins and turn to
- 4:17God so that your sins may be wiped away.
- 4:21Then times of refreshment will come from the presence of the
- 4:25Lord, and he will again send you Jesus, your appointed Messiah,
- 4:30for he must remain in heaven until the time for the final
- 4:33restoration of all things, as God promised long ago through
- 4:37his holy prophets. Moses said.
- 4:40The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from
- 4:44among your own people. Listen carefully to everything
- 4:48he tells you. Then Moses said anyone who will
- 4:51not listen to that prophet will be completely cut off from God's
- 4:55people. Starting with Samuel.
- 4:58Every prophet spoke about what is happening today.
- 5:02You are the children of those prophets and you are included in
- 5:06the covenant God promised to your ancestors.
- 5:09For God said to Abraham, through your descendants, all the
- 5:14families on earth will be blessed.
- 5:16When God raised up his servant Jesus, He sent him first to you
- 5:22people of Israel, to bless you by turning each of you back from
- 5:26your sinful ways. Our Lord, your mission is so
- 5:41clear as we read this. You did not come incarnated in
- 5:47this form of a man in Jesus to set things cosmically right.
- 5:54Know you came so that you could transform each one of us, your
- 6:00beloved children, to know you and to be in your family.
- 6:06You do not have a vision that is broad and vanilla, but you have
- 6:11a vision that is for me and for each one of us.
- 6:14Praying this prayer because you love us with a Father's heart
- 6:20and you draw us back into your family.
- 6:25Thank you for everything you've done, Jesus.
- 6:28Thank you for making a way. Thank you, Father, for giving us
- 6:32your Son at great cost to yourself so that you can
- 6:37reconcile us back to you. And thank you, Holy Spirit, for
- 6:41coming and dwelling in US, pointing US ever back to Jesus
- 6:45so that we can know the character of God more and more
- 6:50and how much we are loved and saved.
- 6:54So, Lord, transform our lives just as Peter, speaking to that
- 6:59audience urged them to do. Let us turn our back on the
- 7:04things that draw us away from you and come fresh to you as our
- 7:08number one priority in our lives.
- 7:11Because what could be more important than you?
- 7:14We love you, we praise you, we lift you up, and we pray all of
- 7:18this in your name. Jesus, I'm in.
