- 0:00John Summers is the motoring historian.
- 0:02He was a company car thrashing technology sales rep that turned into a fairly inept
- 0:07sports bike rider hailing from California.
- 0:10He collects cars and bikes built with plenty of cheap and
- 0:12fast and not much reliable.
- 0:15On his show, he gets together with various co-hosts to talk about new
- 0:18and old cars driving motorbikes, motor racing, and motoring travel.
- 0:35Good day.
- 0:36Good morning, good afternoon.
- 0:37It is John Summers the motoring historian with Mark Gamy.
- 0:41I'm back.
- 0:42You are back?
- 0:43Yeah.
- 0:44Yeah.
- 0:44Like you never I'm I'm not even sure if you have been away.
- 0:47Yeah, I'm not aware of the audio you're putting these out in so it could have
- 0:50been a listener might get confused.
- 0:52That's what I worry about.
- 0:53The poor blight probably is super confused.
- 0:56I'm in my new spirit of coming straight to the point.
- 0:59Um, have you heard of or seen a movie called Moon Runners?
- 1:05No.
- 1:06If I told you it was produced, written and produced by Guy Waldron, does
- 1:12that name name mean anything to you?
- 1:13I've had the name, I'm not a hundred percent sure.
- 1:15What I would tie it to this movie was the prototype for the Dukes of Hazard.
- 1:21Okay.
- 1:21It features moonshine running.
- 1:25Old man named Uncle Jesse who is looking after three worly
- 1:32teenager, 20 something types.
- 1:35They can drive really well.
- 1:36They make moonshine one's a girl, the other's a, but it is a sort of
- 1:42grittier version of, of the story.
- 1:45So the pub is called The Balls Nest.
- 1:48Um, the sheriff is called Roscoe.
- 1:51Boss Hog owns a whorehouse as well.
- 1:53He's not called Boss Hog.
- 1:55The Daisy character has run away from Mississippi because her stepdaddy sold her
- 2:03to the richest man in town into marriage.
- 2:06This is set in the 1970s before the Dukes of Hazard, like 70, mid seventies.
- 2:11I would say Judging by the the cars, the cars do not take.
- 2:17Center stage.
- 2:19Right.
- 2:19It's very, I was thinking, I watched some of the movie one night and then
- 2:24I watched some last night and fell asleep, and then I was watching a bit
- 2:27more of it this morning before the, before the school run, I realized that
- 2:33clearly one of the changes between Moon Runners and the Dukes of Hazard was a
- 2:38decision to make the car a character.
- 2:41Well, was the film successful?
- 2:43I, I, I don't know.
- 2:45I should have done that before springing it on you as a topic was I, we discussed
- 2:49an agenda before we came on air, and then I thought of this topic as well.
- 2:53It's 'cause when I looked at my pc, the movie was still, was still on and it
- 2:57made me, uh, it made me, I mean maybe that it would make sense that they
- 3:01were the sort of changes it had to make commercially to be more successful.
- 3:04If you've had a dry run, you're always gonna edit for better success on you.
- 3:07Oh, well it, it softened the edges, right?
- 3:09The, the Luke character.
- 3:12Is much more interesting in the movie.
- 3:15The Harder Core, uncle Jesse is interesting as well.
- 3:20Roscoe and Boss are both much better in the Dukes.
- 3:25Boss particularly, he has the white Cadillac and he's a fat bastard,
- 3:30but he's not charismatic and funny.
- 3:34And I actually, it's funny, I watched another movie with Sorel book, the
- 3:37guy that played Boss Hog, and was struck by how I, it was at the end
- 3:42of the movie before I was like, oh, that's the dude that plays Boss Hog
- 3:46because he's not actually that fat.
- 3:48He's like padded himself to be Boss Hog.
- 3:51The fatness is the acting and then the cigar and the white suit and all of that.
- 3:57The white Cadillac was there in Moon runners.
- 4:01Duke is a bad guy, but in later episodes of the Dukes he, he's almost is really
- 4:09too much Loki study here, but he's a quasi-religious figure because you
- 4:14can come to him with your problems.
- 4:18And he will fix them miraculously.
- 4:20'cause you have to agree that in numerous episodes the fixes he performs
- 4:27are nothing short of miraculous.
- 4:33James Best made the Roscoe character come alive.
- 4:37The Roscoe character in the movie is quite thin.
- 4:40The other cops are more interesting characters than Roscoe.
- 4:43There's a tobacco chewing cop in the opening scene where
- 4:47it dribbles down his chin.
- 4:48The Duke farm, they don't make a big deal out of the Duke farm
- 4:53and the way that in the Duke's a hazard before you go in the farm.
- 4:57There's always like the shot of the farm itself in the nature with the white
- 5:03pickup truck and the Dodge Charger.
- 5:06They don't make a big play on that.
- 5:07So I think visually, the Dukes, visually it was far more complete.
- 5:13It makes you, I guess, as a storyteller, it's interesting because you see
- 5:18how Waldron crafted what he had.
- 5:21To go to the big studios, you know, by having Baris do the car.
- 5:25So you have the beauty shot, so it walks and talks a little bit like Starsky and
- 5:29Hutch, which was the biggest show in the world when they were making the Dukes.
- 5:33I'm sure the car idea came from, you know, Baris did the
- 5:37Starsky and Hutch car, didn't he?
- 5:39Unless I'm mistaken, I edit myself out if I'm, but Barris did the General
- 5:44Lee and James Best brought the comedy element, the crashing into the water.
- 5:49That was the same, the car chase scenes, like on dirt roads where they're bashing
- 5:54panels, that was was there as well, which is was of course how the film
- 6:00cropped up in my feed in the first place.
- 6:02And I was like, oh.
- 6:03Oh, I never watched this before.
- 6:07The brothers race a 55 Chevy, which barely features in, in the movie,
- 6:13although there is a scene of the racing and that car is named Traveler,
- 6:19which was General Lee's horse.
- 6:21That's how the car is positioned, but it is not the car,
- 6:24which is used all the time.
- 6:26There's a, like a fifties Chevy that's used and clearly a bunch of beater cars,
- 6:32which the production team were able to like buy cheap in LA at that time.
- 6:37So, you know, the kind of thing that you could, you know, four door rear wheel
- 6:41drive, big sedans that they then abuse and clearly paint different colors and
- 6:45fit different body panels to, and all of the stuff that they would subsequently
- 6:49do to make the episodes of the Dukes with the rapid cadence that they could.
- 6:56You know that you'd buy as many Plymouth Furies, as many
- 6:59Dodge Chargers as you could.
- 7:01So actually, this is interesting, and I don't know if this is true, but Dave
- 7:07Fryberger, the hot rod editor guy that did road Kill, who's now doing his own
- 7:14YouTube channel, which I, which I watch.
- 7:17Pretty avidly.
- 7:18I've, I've gotta say fryer reckons, when he did a review a couple of videos ago,
- 7:24he did a review of all the cars that he'd owned and in doing, talked about the
- 7:29muscle car scene and the hot rod scene in Los Angeles in the eighties and nineties.
- 7:35He's maybe three or four years older than you were, you or I. So almost
- 7:40the same age, but little bit older than, uh, than than Mark Newton.
- 7:45And.
- 7:45He reckons the.
- 7:47He, he says, as, as I look through these, it's noticeable.
- 7:52You know, he's a Mopar guy to the core, so there were a lot of dusters.
- 7:55He has roadrunners, he's had a roadrunner, an orange roadrunner that
- 7:59he bought when he was 17 that he's had, so he's had B body cars, he's had
- 8:03road, he's had sea body cars as well as the little a, the little a body stuff.
- 8:09What he never seemed to have was charges, and he addressed that
- 8:13about halfway through the video.
- 8:15And he says he thinks it was because the production company, Warner
- 8:18Brothers were buying up all of the charges that were used, charges that
- 8:24were for sale, and he goes on sale.
- 8:27And again, who knows if this is true.
- 8:29He had a neighbor.
- 8:31Who was the guy who used to go and the line was, and tell the old ladies
- 8:37that their car wasn't gonna be painted orange and trashed in next week's
- 8:41show, which really was gonna be,
- 8:46uh, I'd certainly heard that that con, that that show contributed
- 8:49to a death of those particular cars on the secondhand market.
- 8:52329 cars is my understanding.
- 8:55That's how many Dodge General leads there were.
- 8:58I, I mean, you can go to a website and check that now, can't you?
- 9:04I was idly specking.
- 9:05I was bored last night, so I was, I, after the Mrs had gone beds, I
- 9:08went onto the Honda website and I was specking up CB 1000 Hornet sps.
- 9:14And the truth is, there's not much to speck up about 'em.
- 9:17You either get the hornet or you get the Hornet sp with the Olin suspension
- 9:21and the, and you can have any color you want as long as it's black and
- 9:24it looks fucking mean as in black.
- 9:27Quite a fancy one, but I'm not sure I can justify 10 grand new, even though
- 9:30that is quite a bargain for that.
- 9:32Are they a parallel twin?
- 9:33It's the blade engine from a few years ago.
- 9:35Oh, so it's like 150 odd horsepower tuned for more torque, and it's in a naked, like
- 9:42super nosy, really sharp oing suspension.
- 9:4640 14th.
- 9:47Reviewed it.
- 9:47I went and watched a bunch of reviews, Neve Z reviewed it and a,
- 9:52a bunch of other people reviewed it and that all of them were like.
- 9:55Chef's kiss, it's fantastic.
- 9:58Honda should be saluted.
- 9:59But a lot of people are gonna say, oh well it's not this and it's not that.
- 10:02And it's not, it's not the latest that, and yeah, all of that's true.
- 10:05But what they've done is done a bargain basement, bits from the catalog
- 10:09and delivered a real belter of a, of a bike for not a lot of money.
- 10:13You had me, uh, it's got the old fire blade motor.
- 10:20So what's the latest with the, what else we got on here?
- 10:22What's the latest with the Mercedes?
- 10:23Well, I was gonna ask you.
- 10:27Oh this.
- 10:27Sorry.
- 10:27This is my own, this is my note.
- 10:29I mean, I can tell you the latest, I've just been to pick mine up from
- 10:33storage in Lodi where it sat for a year.
- 10:35Yeah.
- 10:36And it's been out and I've been driving it around again.
- 10:39But the weather has taken a toll on the roof.
- 10:42So now basically has a hole around one quarter of the.
- 10:47Sunroof.
- 10:48So the sunroof is there, and then there's a sort of hole around the front edge.
- 10:53So I was like, you know, it'll be no problem.
- 10:55I'll put rust cleaner on it.
- 10:58I'll put masking tape on it, you know, duct tape.
- 11:00I bought the best duct tape I could, and Dana agreed that
- 11:04it did look less terrible.
- 11:06Come across the street, right, which was my main goal in, in doing it, where
- 11:10the carbon fiber sort of look sticker on the, a pillar of the driver door
- 11:16where that had come off and had rusted underneath and it looked terrible.
- 11:22I held a piece of cardboard against the glass and I just hid it with
- 11:26the black rust inhibiting spray.
- 11:29That's how the pros do it.
- 11:30Yeah, yeah.
- 11:30Totally do.
- 11:32Totally, totally fixed, right?
- 11:35Fixed.
- 11:36I was, I was done in about 15 minutes.
- 11:38Right.
- 11:38It was masterly, masterly craftsmanship.
- 11:42So Ollie and I drive into K one go-karting, and he's
- 11:45like, what's that noise?
- 11:46And I'm like, Hmm, it could, could be.
- 11:49Could be my roof repair.
- 11:51Working its way loose and flapping around.
- 11:53That's definitely what it looks like.
- 11:56It's, uh, a any tape based repairs on like the, we, Angie's St.
- 12:01Went into the garage for a MOT.
- 12:04She'd had a little conant with a car park with a one of those orange,
- 12:08those yellow painted curbs in multi-story car parks, which you've
- 12:11gotta be a bit careful for against.
- 12:14She hadn't been to this particular multi-story and she was quite stressed.
- 12:16So she got a bit of an incident with one, a fra car, should we say.
- 12:20The, the left hand side, the, the near side curbside of affair, uh, was,
- 12:23has been a bit sort of pulled away on the side skirt, so I sort of bd it.
- 12:28Um, with some C tape, and that lasted a couple of journeys and then it went in
- 12:32for an MOT and the Ford dealership rang up and went, ah, we need to fix a couple
- 12:35of things on this before it goes through.
- 12:36I went, yeah, yeah.
- 12:37Okay.
- 12:38Expecting.
- 12:39And they said, well, the wing mirror like needs a, like a little glass in
- 12:42it or something for the indicator.
- 12:44I was like, yeah, yeah, fine, do that.
- 12:45So they fixed that.
- 12:46And then they said, oh, we need to reattach the side skirt.
- 12:50I, okay.
- 12:50And I'm thinking, well, how, how much is that?
- 12:52And they, oh, like 20 quid.
- 12:53I'm like, oh, whatever.
- 12:53No problem.
- 12:54Just do that.
- 12:54Then it arrived back and I walked around and looked at it.
- 12:57They lo and behold, they had gaffer taped it as well just with different
- 13:02color gaffer tape, and it was attached.
- 13:05It last did one day until the next day, and then came loose.
- 13:09So my gaffer taping is better than Ford original gaffer taping.
- 13:13Well, my ST was brand new.
- 13:16Ollie was a baby and was that age where you have to like nap.
- 13:20And I went with him to a hot rod show, but it was that age where he was so young that
- 13:25I hadn't like coordinated it properly.
- 13:27So by the time we got there, he needed to have his nap.
- 13:29But I was like, you know, no harm, no foul.
- 13:32It doesn't matter that we got here at noon and I'm not gonna
- 13:34be able to go in until three.
- 13:35You know, this is what it is.
- 13:37When you have a baby of that age, this is the life that you live.
- 13:40So, you know, he just like in that, well.
- 13:43I was feeling that as I backed the fiesta into a spot which had a high curve that
- 13:48I hadn't seen and broke the clips that hold the back bumper in place, I like,
- 13:56oh man, the, the plastic's like an egg.
- 14:00And once it's broken.
- 14:02Like you like hit it in the wrong way, it cracks, and once it's
- 14:05cracked, there's no fixing it.
- 14:06The best thing you should do is just not worry about it.
- 14:08Yeah.
- 14:09Well, I mean, what I found, I can get another one for 45 quid from a car
- 14:13that's had an impact on the other side.
- 14:15Then you have to paint it unless, no it comes in.
- 14:18Remember it's, remember it's Ford St. They only came in like three colors.
- 14:22Most of them were in that blue.
- 14:23So, you know, I can just get one on eBay.
- 14:26Pre-done.
- 14:27Yeah.
- 14:28Oh yeah.
- 14:29To all those people.
- 14:30Like all these rover loving people on YouTube.
- 14:34This is why people love Ford.
- 14:36This is why people love Ford.
- 14:38'cause not only are they good to drive, but when things happen,
- 14:42the fix is easy and cheap.
- 14:44Relative to your experience with your BMW.
- 14:49Oh yeah, for sure.
- 14:49I mean, look, you might have to put in a little bit of effort on the basis that.
- 14:53When it needed a new exhaust, I rang up the dealership and said, right, I need
- 14:58a new rear is like midsection back.
- 15:00I think I said this before and it was 1300 quid.
- 15:03I was like, not with fitting bro.
- 15:04And he was like, that is with fitting.
- 15:06Sorry, that is without fitting.
- 15:08I was went fuck sake.
- 15:08So the whole new mill tech system was 500 quid.
- 15:12Okay.
- 15:13To just get, you know, different stuff, you know, as you upgrade, as you, as you,
- 15:16um, through the lifestyle of the car.
- 15:18But yeah, and absolutely it's always been a a, a benefit.
- 15:21I mean, mine only has 21 K on it and I'm, there's an air filter over
- 15:25there that I still need to fit to it.
- 15:27It's over in Lodi and I've juggled Lodi.
- 15:30Now the Mercedes is out, the fiesta's in, but I've also put a bunch of bikes
- 15:34in so the Mercedes can't go back in.
- 15:36How I get rid of a bunch of bikes.
- 15:38I'll tell you how Tetris it is.
- 15:39Last time I was in there, when I pulled the door down to close it,
- 15:43it caught on the bike's handlebar.
- 15:46And I had to do the door back up so I could go back outside so I could
- 15:50stand by the bike to pull the thing down so I could lean on the bike.
- 15:55So it went away from the handlebar and then when the door went down, I
- 15:58could then climb over the motorcycle.
- 16:00So yeah, so I dunno what I'm gonna do going forward 'cause it's sort
- 16:03of over there, but I couldn't bear it sitting around in the street.
- 16:07Like just getting toileted by the weather.
- 16:09Mm-hmm.
- 16:10You know, the Mercedes is hardly any better because it's with
- 16:14the best will in the world.
- 16:15You know, that spraying a bit of rust once they've started rusting it just
- 16:19living by the seaside and stuff, you know.
- 16:21Well, I dunno what I'm gonna do with it because, uh, for a hot minute there,
- 16:25it was worth quite a lot of money.
- 16:28Because I think we, we talked in the last pod about these people who believe
- 16:32that peak car was like the year 2000.
- 16:34You know, reason I love it is that it's a great car.
- 16:37It is great to drive and super affordable.
- 16:40And so as if you are looking for a starter classic that you
- 16:44could actually use every day.
- 16:45That kind of car is a terrific example of it.
- 16:48Only 70,000 of them made.
- 16:51But here's the thing, right?
- 16:52In the time since I've had it, the price shot, the prices on them shot up in the
- 16:57pandemic and really fell off quickly.
- 16:59I think at its peak, I think I maybe could have got like
- 17:02seven and a half grand for mine.
- 17:04I think now it's worth like under $2,000.
- 17:08I think it's a breaker because it's in such bad condition, superficially
- 17:15like bodily and gamy I know of in this neighborhood, four other cars of exactly
- 17:22the same age, two of which are in superb condition, and two other of which are
- 17:27in much better condition than mine.
- 17:29So you've literally, it is that beta Jaguar that I always wanted.
- 17:35And I just need to accept that it is perfect as it is.
- 17:38And just let it carry on.
- 17:42Just slow the decay.
- 17:43That's what I'm trying to do.
- 17:45That that is indeed what you're trying to do.
- 17:48Which is why I'm street parking it in saline air, right?
- 17:52I mean, yeah, it's gonna take money, isn't it?
- 17:56I mean, look, I'm just looking, you know, because the reason I hadn't,
- 17:59I wanted to ask about your Mercedes, which is why I had clicked, of course,
- 18:03Mercedes on our five point bullet list for the agenda was also talking about my.
- 18:08A, my sort of potential purchase of Mercedes, which is much more
- 18:12loose in terms of the, the budget.
- 18:14You know, 10 grand, not a million miles 'cause it's gonna get used.
- 18:18But automatic obviously, which is part of the reason I just
- 18:20want something to waft around in.
- 18:21But again, it's the difficulty because I thought whilst we're
- 18:25chatting, I'll check on Autotrader, how many E 50 fives there are.
- 18:28And there's a eight grand one with eight, 6,000 miles and a 99 plate
- 18:35because they changed them in my jet.
- 18:38Mine was current 98 to 2002.
- 18:41Yeah, this is a 99 plate.
- 18:42Looks like yours.
- 18:43Okay.
- 18:43Yeah, there, you're right.
- 18:44There are later ones.
- 18:45The sort of oh oh 3, 0 4 ones.
- 18:48Well, those, those later ones, uh, are supercharged.
- 18:51Yeah, they're like 507 horsepower instead of 355.
- 18:54It's like a, a meaningful increase in horsepower and decrease in reliability.
- 19:01I mean, what I will say is there's an, this is why I like
- 19:04the idea of getting a Mercedes.
- 19:06There's an oh four plate E 55, so the later one with 220,000 miles.
- 19:12For five and half.
- 19:12Yeah, I've seen ones like, this is what I was gonna say.
- 19:14You limiting it to 60,000 miles.
- 19:16I, I understand why you did that.
- 19:18I'd rather take a hundred thousand mile car that's been owned by one or two dudes
- 19:23that's got a service history this thick.
- 19:26And when you meet the dude, he reminds you of my dad.
- 19:28I'd take that car with a hundred thousand miles on it before I
- 19:31took a 50,000 mile one from a dealer where there was no history.
- 19:35Yeah, no, I hear you.
- 19:36I mean, what the thing is like, I like, I mean, I'm just
- 19:38looking at this E 55 in black.
- 19:40I like it.
- 19:41Eight grand for 86,000 miles on 99 plate six miles.
- 19:44Um, I understand why you won 60 because my whole challenge, and this is, that's the
- 19:49thing, this is why I bought another truck.
- 19:51I've had that tundra a year and I put 20,000 miles on it in addition to whatever
- 19:57other miles I've put on other stuff.
- 19:59That's the challenge.
- 20:00Yeah, it's gonna have to wear daily use.
- 20:02So like not loads of nodes in a world of video conferencing calls and
- 20:06stuff, and you know, I'm gonna get in the train to some appointments,
- 20:09no doubt if they're in London.
- 20:10But at the end of the day, you know, I'm gonna have to toot up em down
- 20:13the highways and highways a bit.
- 20:14Now look, this, I don't wanna have millions of cars, but moving to the
- 20:18new place, there is a room for about.
- 20:20Five or six, so I could certainly have an extra one.
- 20:24And I like the idea of buying something like that E 55, that I
- 20:27actually sort of wouldn't mind.
- 20:29It can just stay, you know, it can just find a place and where 10,000 miles a
- 20:34year, not 20,000 miles a year, but on the other end, realistically with your head,
- 20:39you should just buy a middleweight, three liter boo ring, whatever box Mercedes
- 20:43with all toys so you can have a massage butt crack and not care about killing it.
- 20:47That's what I really should do.
- 20:49And ventilated.
- 20:50But the other, the other thing to think about is, is, is, uh, you know, Wayne
- 20:54had, uh, E three 50 and it was maybe a 20 11, 20 12, something like that, when
- 21:02they had that E-Class, when they had that sort of squared off, like fender line
- 21:08and square, little square headlights.
- 21:11At the time, I was a bit like, why'd you buy that way?
- 21:14And didn't really understand why he, why he bought it.
- 21:18In sport mode.
- 21:19It was incredible.
- 21:21It was absolutely incredible and I think that's what you have to understand
- 21:25is that like a 2012 E three 50 in sport mode is better than a 2005 A
- 21:34MG in sport mode is, if that's your.
- 21:38You know, I, I don't know.
- 21:40It might well be, it's just that the generation of, you know, the newer
- 21:43cars are really great in sport mode.
- 21:45Is, is I guess what I'm saying.
- 21:46The other thing is, is that i, I, that you can do, that I envy you for is diesel.
- 21:51Yeah.
- 21:52But like, I can't.
- 21:54Yeah, I mean, I, I won't let me, I, I, I un I understand why you, you,
- 21:58I think it's attractive to me 'cause it's like if there were 3, 3, 5 i's,
- 22:03and 3, 3 5 D's both available here.
- 22:05I would want the 3, 3, 5.
- 22:07I, and I understand why you would want the three.
- 22:09It's just the D appeals 'cause you can't get 'em.
- 22:13Yeah, no, I understand.
- 22:14Forbidden and all that sort of thing, but I fucking hate diesel.
- 22:18Yeah.
- 22:18Um, I was telling Ollie I shall share with you as well, the moment I
- 22:23had that I hate Diesel moment group and I took a vacation together.
- 22:30It was like a weekend break to.
- 22:33Monaco, or I can't remember where we flew to, but either way, we ended up
- 22:38renting a car and driving from somewhere to somewhere to Monaco or something.
- 22:45Either way, I went to Monaco with Greek.
- 22:46I walked the Monaco Grand Prix circuit with Greek.
- 22:50We had this Lancia Libra rental car, which, uh, of course you did.
- 22:55And, and on the drive there was a climb and an overtake, and I went
- 23:01to do the overtake and, you know, got alongside right at that moment
- 23:06where a gas powered car finds a bit more power to complete the overtake.
- 23:10And this thing just bounced off the rev limiter.
- 23:13And add nothing.
- 23:14And then I 500 revs.
- 23:17About 4,000 revs.
- 23:18Yeah.
- 23:18Yeah, yeah.
- 23:19And, and so now I'm fighting for another gear and now it's out of Turbo
- 23:22Boost and now I'm about to get head on and, and that was the moment where
- 23:27I was like, I fucking hate diesel.
- 23:30Right.
- 23:30That was the, that's the standout moment to me with, with people
- 23:35that is perfectly acceptable.
- 23:36Like they, they're not reving like, it's like, yeah, like talk, talk, whatever.
- 23:41But like, you know, the, the talk, it just, it just runs outta puff
- 23:45in a really disappointing way.
- 23:47The running out of puff in a really disappointing way.
- 23:50Is it the oomph when you first come in, the gas is lovely.
- 23:53Oh, that's nice.
- 23:54The running out of puff in a really disappointed way.
- 23:57Harley's are a little like that.
- 23:59Yeah.
- 24:00Yeah, I can see that.
- 24:01I mean, I love it.
- 24:02I, I love it.
- 24:03And I, and you know, I just bought this diesel truck.
- 24:05I'm enjoying both, I really enjoyed the Virin bikes and the torque.
- 24:09I love, I love the torque and for an American environment, I, I
- 24:13absolutely, I absolutely get it.
- 24:16Everything has its place.
- 24:17So a lot of talk.
- 24:18What I really love is a high revving, naturally aspirated gas motor.
- 24:24And here I am eulogizing the one in the BMW.
- 24:28Um, but before that area, there's an area where you can really red line
- 24:32the BMW in like a couple of gears.
- 24:34He can, like any, you know, he's got 180 horse.
- 24:37He's not a fast car, so, you know, out of the turn, second and
- 24:41third, you know, and then into the, you know, it sounds awesome.
- 24:45That rush to the red line, that rush to the six grand,
- 24:49six and a half grand red line.
- 24:50It sounds awesome.
- 24:52It's everything that makes cars fun and, and great.
- 24:56And, and if you don't believe it, that's what's missing with
- 25:00electric cars, that the zing is not.
- 25:04Accompanied by the same sense of of theater, it's the
- 25:08rock show without a sound.
- 25:11I wanna say something else as well, and I wonder what your thoughts are on this.
- 25:15I feel like the whole way electric vehicles, uh.
- 25:20Launch that whole like launch experience and the building up
- 25:25of speed that feels completely different in electric vehicles to me.
- 25:31And, and for a long time.
- 25:32Well, for a long time, but I spent a while, I had a ride in Rivian fairly
- 25:36recently and I had that thought and I said as much to the owner and he was
- 25:41like, oh, there is fully a difference.
- 25:44You know, there is fully a difference.
- 25:45This is a less organic power delivery.
- 25:49It's u Well, it's, but it's uniform.
- 25:50It doesn't build it, it's, there's no sort of like a appreciable feel
- 25:54of the rev range in the same way.
- 25:56You know, there's no power band.
- 25:58It's all power band.
- 25:59It's just sort of a uniform shove.
- 26:02It's a shit ton of shove.
- 26:03And an exciting shove and thrilling in its way.
- 26:06Absolutely.
- 26:07And faster, you know, most of the time in a straight line.
- 26:11Yeah.
- 26:11But it comes with a shit ton of weight.
- 26:14You need to drive the fucking things for about 20 years before
- 26:16you really pay for the, the actual environmental cost of buying them.
- 26:20So I'll stick with the old cars and not ever need a new car.
- 26:22Yeah, that's the greenest thing I can do.
- 26:27Speaking of which, one of the things that came up on the list was like
- 26:30SL 60 and stuff, which is extremely green in me to get like a V 12 Cabrio.
- 26:37Okay, so I would urge with Mercedes, the A MG products because they do have that
- 26:42sort of muscle carry kind of edge to them, which is super, super appealing.
- 26:49The, the V twelves, I do feel like a, some of it was everyone at the golf
- 26:57club as an SL 500, so I'll get a 600.
- 27:00They did offer extra horsepower and I did drive one.
- 27:05A long time ago when I did the smogging, I got to be friends with a guy who did
- 27:09work on car, on my cars for me, and he was doing some work on an SL 600, and
- 27:18he said it's, it's like, it's basically like a really complicated Corvette.
- 27:22And
- 27:25that, I mean, sort of, yeah, because the thrust was kind of similar and
- 27:30it was a two-seater and it was an automatic, and it wasn't floppy,
- 27:34but it also wasn't your Nissan three 50 in terms of, of how it felt.
- 27:40Um, the thing with the, the SL 60 fives and stuff is
- 27:42they're just way too expensive.
- 27:44But on the other hand, if you look at SL 50 fives.
- 27:47There's loads of 'em.
- 27:48Yes.
- 27:49And, and I think the, uh, the important thing is the a m genus.
- 27:53Yeah.
- 27:54The, the other, the other one that I like that's a bit of a, not on
- 27:57the radar, but there's a lot of them are, there's, there's a few of them
- 28:00around are the cls, the coupe ones.
- 28:05Mm-hmm.
- 28:05They do a CL 65, and I think because of that, the CL 60 threes.
- 28:13From the era where they were doing that.
- 28:16M1 60 legendary 6.28 grand red line guy.
- 28:22Mm-hmm.
- 28:22That motor, you could get that in a CL and the CL 63, I guess because you
- 28:30know, most sort of collector types would rather do the 65, the CL 60 threes.
- 28:34They always seem pretty good.
- 28:35Value to, to me, I can't recall.
- 28:38Yeah.
- 28:38I'm just looking at one here.
- 28:39There's a nice black one, an oh eight.
- 28:42With 67,000 miles on the clock for 15 grand.
- 28:46Yeah, I like the no C pillar, B pillar as well.
- 28:49See if you look at, that's nice.
- 28:51If you look at like a C 63 or an E 63 that's been owned by somebody who's
- 28:56actually like driven it, anybody who bought the CL 63, that strikes me
- 29:00as like an older person and somebody who bought that as like a second car.
- 29:05It just, I just feel like a CL is likely to have been more used in a gentler way
- 29:11than E class or certainly a C class.
- 29:15I I'm feeling it.
- 29:17I'm feeling it.
- 29:18This person's taken panes to take all the pictures outside of a country pub,
- 29:28which is, and let me just tell you, it's a thatched pub.
- 29:31I was thinking as I, as I was dealing with the purchase of this, this F two 50
- 29:37that I've bought recently, that's a really nice, I I, I was thinking about how.
- 29:42You do judge on the ad, right?
- 29:44This truck was quite a long way away because I sort of, normally
- 29:48I like have a short list and I, but I didn't do that this time.
- 29:51I just was like, I'm just gonna call about that particular, I
- 29:54had two that I was gonna look at.
- 29:56One of them, the ad wasn't working properly, the phone number
- 29:58didn't seem to be working, so I was just like, fuck that one.
- 30:01It's in fucking Las Vegas anyway, which is.
- 30:03Seven hours away from San Francisco.
- 30:06So that's a massive logistical operation to look at the, yeah, buy
- 30:10the truck and get the truck home.
- 30:12This one, um, was in Modesto only.
- 30:16Two hours away.
- 30:17So a, a much more, uh, realistic kind of prospect.
- 30:21In the pictures, you could tell how straight the panels were.
- 30:24The ad was really well written, and if you just compare that with it's,
- 30:28it's like, it was only after I'd like negotiated with the people and bought
- 30:32the truck that I was like, you know, part of the reason why I bought this was
- 30:35because the ad was actually well written.
- 30:37So I knew that I was gonna be able to have a proper conversation with somebody,
- 30:40the kind of person who photographs.
- 30:44A car half covered by a tar paulin and then says, five grand.
- 30:50No negotiation.
- 30:51Don't waste my time.
- 30:53Is that really somebody you wanna be doing business with?
- 30:57I'm gonna give money to that person when you've not you.
- 30:59You know what I mean?
- 31:00It just becomes when, when you are just on the shitter surfing, you're like,
- 31:03Ooh, you know, I'll, I'll like that one.
- 31:06When you're actually.
- 31:08Got your hand on the dollars and you're about to place the call, suddenly at
- 31:13that point you begin to think much more clearly about what you were, yeah, yeah.
- 31:19No, that's a fair comment.
- 31:20So there's F two 50 is a Powerstroke Diesel seven three Powerstroke diesel.
- 31:25It is currently wearing 465,800 miles.
- 31:30Original transmission, original wheels.
- 31:34Two owners, dude, like trucks are held to a different standard
- 31:37when we first got in it, right?
- 31:39Firstly, Ollie loves it, loves, loves, loves it, right?
- 31:44It's so totally the truck that he wanted.
- 31:49Um, you know, he was like, you know, I didn't wanna say, but the Toyota
- 31:52really wasn't doing it for me.
- 31:53But this, this is like.
- 31:56It really is as far as I can make out a pretty straight old truck.
- 32:01Um, I've not done a lot of miles in it yet.
- 32:04It leaks from the front hub and of course the rebuild on that, which I,
- 32:09you know, budgeted a certain amount in for it's costing, you know, there's a
- 32:13massive Bay Area tax on that being done and the Ford guy doesn't want to touch
- 32:18it 'cause it's like four wheel drive.
- 32:20And so the way I led up to this was.
- 32:23Earlier in the year, I bought a rampage motorcycle lift.
- 32:29We may have even talked about it on the pot.
- 32:31You are nodding.
- 32:32That means you remember the video of the, the way that it works, where you, you
- 32:37sort of, yeah, there's a chalky part and you put the front wheel in the chalky
- 32:41part and you strap the bike down as if it was in the bed of the truck already.
- 32:45And then you connect the winch.
- 32:49The winch motor to the battery of the truck.
- 32:53And then you use the winch and the winch winches the thing up in a
- 33:00sort of quite magical motion into the other part of the ramp, which
- 33:05is fixed in the bed of the truck.
- 33:07And you know, then you, and the original thought was, was this is
- 33:12gonna go in the bed of the tundra.
- 33:14But the Tandra's such a nice example, and I didn't want to drill the bed and
- 33:18it means taking the tailgate off because the rampage will fit in an eight foot
- 33:24bed, but it sticks out of six foot bed.
- 33:29You, what people do is just take the tailgate off, which is fine, right?
- 33:33But it means that all the time I'd have the thing sticking out as well.
- 33:37It like sticks out a foot.
- 33:39So you've sort of got this like it's about a foot wide.
- 33:43And, you know, a couple of inches, half, that'd be fucking annoying.
- 33:47It would be.
- 33:48'cause you bash into stuff all the time and people will bash into it and you
- 33:51know, so I was just like, well, so then I caught myself surfing like the cheapest
- 33:56$2,000 trucks that I could, that were low.
- 34:00So like, you know, like Mazda, Mitsubishi, mighty Maxes and Mazda B 22 hundreds,
- 34:08you know, those kind of, but two wheel drive ones, so they're super low.
- 34:11'cause the name of the game for me, I should have backed up and, and, and
- 34:14said this was, uh, you were aware that earlier in the year I was loading a
- 34:20CB 900 with John and it fell on me.
- 34:23It was the one with the Yura pipe.
- 34:27And as we were going up onto the trailer, if you imagine where it goes up the ramp,
- 34:32so where it comes off the ramp and into the bed of the truck, there's a sort
- 34:36of low point, isn't that kinda light?
- 34:38And the exhaust grazed at that point it was this aftermarket yoshimura
- 34:42and basically it rocked up on the exhaust and fell towards me.
- 34:47And John was just like, I can't hold it.
- 34:49So like, let it go.
- 34:50So anyway, so E either way it twisted up my back.
- 34:52So this led to, we were talking earlier before we came on air about
- 34:56my hip being like all janked up.
- 34:59That's what was the beginning of, you know, me being an additional
- 35:03level of junkiness of my, uh.
- 35:06Of my back.
- 35:06So I was like, I'm not fucking up my back moving these fucking
- 35:11crappy motorcycles anymore, right?
- 35:13I'm just gonna solve this once and for, so hence the rampage where, you know, you
- 35:18push a button and it's, and it's done.
- 35:20But you know, as I say, the truck, which the tundra was meant to
- 35:23cover too many bases, and I'm just like, ah, that's not gonna work.
- 35:27So, uh, I need a truck with an eight foot bed.
- 35:30So I was looking for a two wheel drive truck 'cause it was gonna be low, but then
- 35:33it was like, you know what, if the rampage is going in, it could be four wheel drive.
- 35:36I just get a decent, decent truck.
- 35:38Then you're like, well you could do like the Mitsubishi Mighty
- 35:41Max or something like that.
- 35:42Like something little and sensible.
- 35:44But what you could do is, is do the like million mile capable turbo
- 35:50diesel and do the turbo diesel thing, which you've never really done.
- 35:53You know, don't have any diesel vehicles here.
- 35:56We were just talking about how I'm quite attracted to diesel partly.
- 35:59'cause you know you can't get the turbo diesel cars here.
- 36:02I'd love a turbo diesel jaguar or a turbo diesel Audi that I would definitely,
- 36:06I know you're wrinkling in your nose.
- 36:08It's 'cause you get 'em, we can't get 'em here.
- 36:11So it's quite, it's, it's quite a piece.
- 36:12So this is lurking at the end of the street there.
- 36:15It is enormous 'cause it's a crew cab.
- 36:17It really is huge When you fire it up, when it's in like
- 36:22open cycle, it smells the way.
- 36:25Do you remember the buses used to smell in Plymouth, that
- 36:28diesel smell, that like absolute hardcore, unfiltered diesel smell?
- 36:36It's, it's that, it's, it's, it's really that.
- 36:39There's a lot of stuff online about how legendary the power stroke is.
- 36:43If you Google it, there's all sorts of, you know, user groups
- 36:46and, and all this sort of thing.
- 36:47It really is, uh, uh, and part of the following is like the mileage, right?
- 36:52But part of the following is around the fact that there is a very distinctive
- 36:56exhaust note, and I can't believe I'd missed it before I bought the truck.
- 37:02You know what?
- 37:02It's in that moment where you start it and when you've bought a very high mile.
- 37:08Fucking cheap old truck every time you put the key in it for the first.
- 37:1415 or 20 times, you're not really sure whether it's gonna start, are you?
- 37:17You're a bit worried.
- 37:18So when it fires up, there's always a feeling of joy when it fires
- 37:23up with the way these power, this power stroke, seven, three fires
- 37:27up and it's absolutely unmodified.
- 37:29It's not, you know, because you can turbot charge the crap out of them.
- 37:32Like Marx has about 800 horsepower.
- 37:35And that's with like a reliable kind of a, a tune on it.
- 37:40Obviously not a California smog legal tune.
- 37:42And that's another thing about it.
- 37:43This thing just passed smog.
- 37:45Unbelievable.
- 37:46So awesome, awesome, uh, piece of kit.
- 37:49Not tested the four wheel drive yet.
- 37:51He told me.
- 37:51That works.
- 37:53The windows all work, central lock.
- 37:55It doesn't, I made my payment to, I think the company was called, well,
- 38:01I modify it for privacy and, and, and all of that, but it was something
- 38:06similar to Circle M Hog callers.
- 38:10That was the, uh, so that's what it's, it's, it has a gooseneck in the bed.
- 38:15Gooseneck hitch in the bed.
- 38:16So it was probably hauling, you know, those kind of of, but
- 38:20like for that sort of thing, you don't want a high rev engine.
- 38:23You want grunt low reving, just reliable, you know?
- 38:27Yeah.
- 38:28F yeah.
- 38:29Sort of movement.
- 38:30And that's what they are great at that shit.
- 38:32They absolutely are.
- 38:32Yeah.
- 38:33Well that's why, that's why I wanted this, this deep Yeah, yeah.
- 38:35For this kind of thing.
- 38:36And, and the idea is now the, the ramp can stay in it all the time.
- 38:40And when I do a trip like the Oregon one that I just did, I can always take a bike
- 38:44with me and it could just sit in the ramp.
- 38:47And anytime I want to get out and ride, I can just get out and ride.
- 38:50And the.
- 38:51Tundra can still be used as a sort of luxury car way that
- 38:56we have been using it for.
- 38:57Now, you might say, well, why don't you just buy an SUV?
- 38:59And that's probably what we should have done, but you know, yeah.
- 39:03Fuck SUVs.
- 39:03I probably didn't want an SUV, so we didn't buy an SUV.
- 39:06I'd have done an S suv.
- 39:08I was looking at Escalades.
- 39:09I was looking at 6.2 liter Escalades before, oh, of course you were 6.2 liter.
- 39:14Of course you were.
- 39:14Like, well, why would you have the five three when you're, could
- 39:17have the six two for God's sake?
- 39:19Why put up with 300 in change horsepower?
- 39:22And you could have 400, but that motor un reliable.
- 39:24Apparently.
- 39:25That's why I was often, 'cause Daniel was quite into the idea of an
- 39:28Escalade, but then I read that the motors blow up, so I was like, no.
- 39:31Yeah, I, I mean, I don't like the SUVs.
- 39:35I just, you know, for England, for England, it it, I mean for here
- 39:40it's a totally different thing.
- 39:42Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 39:42So they still suck.
- 39:45It depends, which they still can suck compared to a proper car is my point.
- 39:51You know, it's a better format if they're too high, they're
- 39:54too big, they're too bulky.
- 39:56They're compromises.
- 39:58Yes, yes.
- 39:59I, I, I feel all of that, but the whole like commanding driving position
- 40:04overrides all of that, doesn't it?
- 40:06I guess.
- 40:07I mean the minority.
- 40:10I, I resisted the SUV thing for many, many years and then when I got that
- 40:15Durango, I was like, oh, I kind of get it.
- 40:18I kind of get why people like, oh no, I mean, I'm sure I would be disarmed
- 40:21by and, and would enjoy driving them.
- 40:23I tend to enjoy driving everything.
- 40:24So, I mean, you know, so I'm gonna make a confession now, mark.
- 40:28I'm gonna confess something, which you might find appall.
- 40:32We may not even be able to be friends after I say this.
- 40:34I might, I'm hovering over the hangup button.
- 40:36Yeah.
- 40:37Yeah.
- 40:37It's gonna change the friendship of, of many decades, but I, I've kind of got a
- 40:42hankering for Range Rovers all the time.
- 40:44They knew I've no fucking interest.
- 40:47Right.
- 40:48A knackered one.
- 40:49Oh, well, okay.
- 40:50So Harry.
- 40:51Harry on Harry's garage, Harry Metcalf of Evo Fame and Fortune did an interview
- 40:57where if you watch one of his, his, his re his last couple of years, they, he did
- 41:01an, uh, a 20 or 30 minute video with him and Clarkson of all people sitting on the
- 41:08back of their range rovers talking to each other about why they bought the best one.
- 41:12And they talk about all the different ones and why the ones that they've got are the
- 41:16best ones and that you should get that.
- 41:17So if you are interested, that's what you, that's the video for you.
- 41:21Alright.
- 41:21Because literally, I'm, I'm in that place where I've said before, after I bought
- 41:27that Tundra, I, I was over sensible.
- 41:30It was no more sensible, it was full stupid from there.
- 41:33Hence, the crew cab half a million mile diesel pickup to
- 41:39simply to move motorcycles.
- 41:40Like that really was pretty, uh, intense.
- 41:43Like, I mean, this is the problem.
- 41:44Yeah, we, I've, you and I have never been able to stay on Target.
- 41:47You know, we start with a perfectly reasonable agenda of 10 grand
- 41:50and like 60,000 miles of Mercedes to just wear boring miles.
- 41:54And then I ended up looking at this 15 grand, CLS 55, and then thinking, well,
- 42:00you know, you know, I like the no B pillow and it's got a massive sunroof.
- 42:04So the whole thing had been feeling like a Cabrio the whole time.
- 42:07Like, you know, sort of that would be quality.
- 42:10So, yeah.
- 42:11And, and that occasional backseat counts for so much.
- 42:15And the other thing about 'em is in terms of the cls, particularly the
- 42:19carpark presence, they're like ageless.
- 42:22They're completely, I like the side swoop.
- 42:25I definitely do.
- 42:29But you know, these awesome search engines where you can just put in V 10 and Audi.
- 42:36And then just stack rank, then V 10 Audi sedan and stack rank cheap to
- 42:42expensive because that V 10 motor, those Audis had, it was Lamborghini derives.
- 42:47Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 42:48Same one with the guy.
- 42:49So ab Well, okay, Eric's like if they break down all the time.
- 42:54'cause the price is on them.
- 42:55Dude, if you, the price is on, uh, uh, uh, on like Audi V 10, like an SA or an S six.
- 43:02That was the, the models that they went into versus, uh, E 60 BMW.
- 43:09M five V 10, the M five is worth way more.
- 43:12And any E 63 is worth way more as well.
- 43:15'cause the E 63 and the M five, both gun classic cars, the Lamborghini
- 43:19motor Audis are cheap now.
- 43:21Eric's like, oh, we had one in the club.
- 43:23We had one, like a guy brought one to a track day or something in it.
- 43:27It like blew up and was broken all the time.
- 43:29And I'm like, well.
- 43:29You took it to the track, but yeah, just people seem underwhelmed by them,
- 43:34but I'm like, how bad could it be?
- 43:35Could you not put the Lamborghini like exhaust kind of on the Audi,
- 43:40like, I'm, I'm fascinated by that.
- 43:42I kind of want one.
- 43:43There was one I Googled, one up, I, I Googled on Auto Tempest, which is
- 43:49like a, you know, search aggregation engine for, for, for cars, which
- 43:54is kind of useful for America.
- 43:55Not com no, it's not thorough, I wouldn't say, but it's, it's pretty good.
- 43:59It found me, uh, like an eight grand S six in Kansas City.
- 44:05Right.
- 44:06This is like 120,000 mile cars and there's no like consumer law here.
- 44:11It's, you know, you drive off the forecourt, whatever
- 44:14happens, it's your problem.
- 44:16Good luck.
- 44:17Yeah.
- 44:17Yeah.
- 44:18Sold as seed as they say.
- 44:20You know, there's, there's that to contend with, to say nothing
- 44:23of the logistics of, a lot of 'em are on the east coast as well, and
- 44:26I, I don't want an east coast car.
- 44:28I'd rather have like a. Non rusts carve.
- 44:30But yeah, I've thought about those as well.
- 44:32It's just when it, who would I get to fix it?
- 44:35The difficulty I have with them is, again, in my sort of view of Audis, there are
- 44:41only a handful that were worth having.
- 44:44You know, objectively there's the RS four, there was R eights, there's
- 44:50the TT RS 3.2, and that's about it.
- 44:53Because most of the other ones were too nose heavy and like under steer
- 44:58and I fucking hate under steer.
- 45:00Yeah.
- 45:00Well, that's my objection to them.
- 45:02I think now as I'm looking at the e sixties being like 15, 20, well
- 45:07my, my old boss, um, well, my, my sales director at Fastnet had the,
- 45:12the TT RS 3.2 and loved it, and then he swapped that out for an RS six.
- 45:17He said he wished after about six months, he rec, he said he reckoned the tt.
- 45:22RS 3.2 was a better car and more fun.
- 45:24What year?
- 45:25RS six?
- 45:26Yeah, it would've been about oh five to 10, something like that.
- 45:31Oh, okay.
- 45:32Because Eric's thing is the, the producer, Eric the, instead of talking about the
- 45:37V 10, he was like that first generation.
- 45:40Was it the RS six?
- 45:42Yes.
- 45:42Yes, it was, um, the first generation RS six because I remember that car
- 45:48launching because I was at, it was the end of my time in tech in Britain.
- 45:53I was working in London and we.
- 45:56Rented.
- 45:57I don't remember if we did it or if a partner company did it or whatever.
- 46:01There was some fucking shindig at Jack Barclay's Bentley
- 46:05dealership in fucking Mayfair.
- 46:08Literally, you were the dealership overlooks Sir James's Park with Buckhouse.
- 46:14Just up there, just just up the road kind of thing.
- 46:17And it was the launch of that, um, RS six Audi, and that was the first time I looked
- 46:23at an Audi and thought, bloody hell, I might want one of those more than a BMW.
- 46:28You know, it, it really, I felt like that and in some ways.
- 46:32Styling wise, you can argue that was peak Audi.
- 46:35'cause the car they had was the sedan.
- 46:37And you remember the way the tail lights were on that era of really,
- 46:42uh, distinctive great looking car.
- 46:48I don't know.
- 46:49'cause 'cause I'm, I, I've an, I've an Audi one that got away
- 46:52story 'cause I was offered.
- 46:55Remember when?
- 46:56Same era as as this probably same, same time I worked with a guy in
- 47:01the city who did historic group sea racing of all things he did
- 47:05like this bar 24 and and so on.
- 47:08And I guess I always felt like I should have made an effort to get close to
- 47:11him, but he was a bit of an asshole.
- 47:13So that was, you know, as so many successful salespeople are.
- 47:16So that impeded me, you know, his general need.
- 47:19To show off to me constantly, uh, you know, kind of impeded my bill.
- 47:25Dick Measuring gets tiring.
- 47:26Dick measuring, got real tiring with, with this dude where wherever you are,
- 47:30your life was cool, but you sadly weren't.
- 47:32He offered me, he had an RS two.
- 47:35Do you remember those?
- 47:36They were only wagons and they were built by.
- 47:39Porsche wasn't there?
- 47:40Some shtick like, like Porsche brake calibers.
- 47:43He had one of those, and I remember he offered it to me for 10 grand.
- 47:47It was under 10 grand.
- 47:48It was like 9, 9, 9 5 or what?
- 47:50That was what he, what he wanted for it.
- 47:53And I remember saying to him at the time, you know, that's reasonable.
- 47:55I just don't have that money to give you for it.
- 47:58And looking back, that was.
- 48:00Absolute steal of a deal.
- 48:01Not that I'd have the car now, 'cause I'd have had it when I left England
- 48:05and it would've gone at that time.
- 48:07And then I'd been more sad to have let it go.
- 48:10I probably would've had to let it go for less than I paid him for it.
- 48:14'cause I'd have probably cured up the wheels and driven the shit out of it
- 48:17and it not be worth What was That is true before I uh, are they the ones that
- 48:21had the little plaque inside the cabin telling you what number it was and stuff?
- 48:25Dunno.
- 48:26I never looked at the ones that were built by Porsche.
- 48:28Some of them did have that.
- 48:29I never looked at the car.
- 48:30Oh.
- 48:31Probably was never looked at the car.
- 48:33Can't believe we talked so much about Howdy.
- 48:35Given that you and I are generally like, fuck those
- 48:37things 'cause of the Understood.
- 48:39Yeah.
- 48:39Generally speaking, I mean, producer Eric will say that producer,
- 48:43Eric's very disappointed by the Ur Quatro, like the original Quatro.
- 48:48He reckons that's a like a don't meet your heroes.
- 48:51Kind of a thing.
- 48:52I mean, I don't know.
- 48:53Yeah, I mean, I just, I just think if I, if you think about the Ur Quatro,
- 48:56like an early Audi Quatro and you compare it with Sierra Cosworth,
- 49:01there's just no comparison in my mind between what I'd wanna drive and, and,
- 49:06and I should say, you and I don't need to have this conversation, but, but
- 49:09dear listeners, not the three door.
- 49:12Guy with the big wing that you are thinking of.
- 49:14Mark and I are thinking of the four door sapphire cosworth, which is Sapphire cozy.
- 49:19Yeah.
- 49:20Yeah.
- 49:20But actually did pack a little bit more horse, but in the early years
- 49:24people didn't know what they were looking at with the sapphires.
- 49:27So you really did have something that was, looked like it was, they were, they
- 49:33weren't really very Q car when you look back at 'em, but they were more, way more
- 49:37Q car than the whale tail two door one.
- 49:40Yeah, way more.
- 49:42Yeah.
- 49:42And then, but of course by the era that the Escort Cosworth launched.
- 49:47By that era.
- 49:48That was the era that they were being used by robbery for robberies
- 49:52and in ram raids and Yeah.
- 49:55And all that.
- 49:55Uh, and the cache just grew in their coolness.
- 49:58Yeah.
- 49:58Yeah.
- 49:58And, and you couldn't get insurance could you, by the, like the escort Cosworth.
- 50:02If you were like 25 years old and living in London, you could not insure
- 50:07an escort Cosmo looking, looking back, it's not hard to see why, because.
- 50:11Every OIC under the sun.
- 50:13Mm-hmm.
- 50:14Knew how to hot wire a Ford Esco and fundamentally.
- 50:19That part of an escort Cosworth was exactly the same as, you
- 50:23know, every other bit of it.
- 50:25There was no, yeah, yeah.
- 50:26The door locks that you could screwdriver on your mom's 1.3.
- 50:30You could still do the same door locks on the escort cosworth, couldn't you?
- 50:35So, you know, it's uh oh on, on that kind of theme, right the other day.
- 50:41This is a while ago now, but this is a story worth sharing.
- 50:44It was in the area where I was struggling with my, uh, with my hip.
- 50:48So, uh, I booked this like, you know, massage downtown.
- 50:52I don't wanna use the buses 'cause there's always like homeless people.
- 50:56Pissing and puking and, you know, just, I just don't want
- 50:59to interact with that shit.
- 51:01I'd like, that was like, that was years ago.
- 51:03That's not how I'm going to interact now.
- 51:06So, but at the same time, to do like a Waymo backwards and forwards for 30 bucks.
- 51:10I'll do it the first time, but the second time I'm just like,
- 51:13you know, I'm gonna do it myself.
- 51:15So I zoomed down there on the moped, of course, as, as you, as you would.
- 51:20And then, uh, whilst.
- 51:22At some point during the massage process, lost the fucking key, didn't I?
- 51:27So that really fucking ruled.
- 51:30But it was all right 'cause uh, I, I came home and, uh, got the truck and a
- 51:34ramp and just went and got the moped and loaded it in the back of the truck and
- 51:38brought it home and was like, whatever.
- 51:40And I priced up and I bought another lock barrel with a key, but it was gonna be
- 51:45really fucking annoying to have to change the lock barrel and, and all of that.
- 51:49And then I noticed on my keyboard just over there in the corner of
- 51:53the room hanging up, there was some spare keys that had a fob on that.
- 51:58You know, it seemed like they'd come with the zoomer.
- 52:01So although I had lost the original key, there was another
- 52:04couple of keys that were cut.
- 52:06Lo and behold, I put them in the, and and they worked perfectly.
- 52:10So who knew I had the spare keys all along.
- 52:13I could have just way mowed home, got the spare key and way mowed back and
- 52:17fired the, uh, fired the thing up.
- 52:20So that was lucky.
- 52:21'cause uh, they didn't look like they were exactly the same, but
- 52:25they obviously came with it.
- 52:26And that was enough to, they won't open the seat, but I'd already disabled that
- 52:31the seat lock had already like, jammed up, so I just put some cardboard in it.
- 52:35And so just.
- 52:35It goes up and down rather.
- 52:37That rather nice.
- 52:38Well, actually, well that's one of the things actually I'm
- 52:40looking forward to on the side.
- 52:41'cause I've, I was looking at a few different mopeds in the last few weeks,
- 52:44just as sort of additional thing.
- 52:46One of the things about the little village we're moving to is
- 52:48it's, it's about a mile or two.
- 52:49Outside of like the nearest town, and it's not a very big town, but
- 52:52it's a proper little English village with like, you know, 50 or so
- 52:55houses in it, something like that.
- 52:56And it, the town nearby is a few, you know, couple of thousand
- 52:59people, but like not big, but the Tesco is right at the top.
- 53:03The Maori story is right at the top, multi, um, sort of,
- 53:06um, thing is right there.
- 53:07So nipping out to get like a few beers or a bottle of wine or something on a Sunday
- 53:12is just a little five minute moped away.
- 53:14So I was, I quite out the idea of just having a little moped
- 53:17to just zip and zip back?
- 53:19Yeah, I can.
- 53:20Our back garden will have enough room for me to have the gazebo up.
- 53:25Next to the garage.
- 53:26So I can have that up a lot of the time, especially in the winter.
- 53:30So I can bring stuff outta the garage and work on it in the daylight.
- 53:32But with the gazebo keeping me dry, dude, I, I love the sound of this new place.
- 53:37Yeah, I love the, uh, so the other thing I'm gonna buy, I decided, you
- 53:40know, those big ass metals dishes that you can buy to burn wood.
- 53:45In the garden.
- 53:46Yeah.
- 53:46We've seen those big, those copper things that Goodwood always
- 53:49have 'em at the outside events.
- 53:50Right.
- 53:50Whether it's warm or cold.
- 53:51Anyway, there's always wood burning and you are always like, oh, bit of
- 53:54an air fieldy kind of place, isn't it?
- 53:55And yeah, it's a bit chilly in the wind, so you're always quite glad of them.
- 53:58But I was scoping one of those for exactly that sort of outdoor,
- 54:00working on the bikes and stuff.
- 54:02I don't like those chimney things.
- 54:04'cause like you.
- 54:05I don't wanna burn outdoor heater stuff.
- 54:07I'm not trying to take the, you know, the planet's burning down fast enough without
- 54:09me getting behind it and giving it aho, you know, but a bit of wood burning is, is
- 54:14like, you know, it's quite a nice thing.
- 54:15Anyway.
- 54:16You can get like reclaimed wood and shit from nearby and stuff.
- 54:19It doesn't need to be a prime mahogany or anything.
- 54:23I'm not flying it in from South America, so I'm, yeah, the, the,
- 54:26the facility for me to fettle with additional unrequired machinery
- 54:30outside is, uh, enticing me into, into cruising bike trader for more things.
- 54:36And of course, bikes have the advantage that you can fit more things in.
- 54:39Yeah, they really do have that event.
- 54:41Mm-hmm.
- 54:41And there's a proper side gate, like a sort of full on sort of farm gate style
- 54:45five bar sort of thing on the side.
- 54:46Wooden one that you, I can, you know, that you can get through to get down
- 54:50to the side of the house by the garage.
- 54:51So yeah, my brain is already filling up the spare space with vehicles.
- 54:55I don't yet own good news, mark.
- 54:58Mm-hmm.
- 55:00Well that note.
- 55:01Thank you for your time, mark.
- 55:02Pleasure.
- 55:03Thank you.
- 55:03Drive through.
