Case 008 — The Wrong Address · Endless Noir

The Detective: It was the kind of night that finds the cracks in a building and crawls in through them. Dale had gone home an hour ago, or so I thought, and the bottle in the drawer was doing most of my listening. Then I heard the outer door, and Dale's voice, low, the way it gets when she's already decided the answer is no.
• 0:18
Dale: It's past nine, miss, and the man's not taking clients tonight. He's not taking much of anything tonight, between you and me. You can leave a name and a number and he'll be sorry he missed you in the morning.
• 0:31
The Dame: I don't have until morning. Neither does the man I came about. Be a dear and tell him it's worth his while to be awake.
• 0:41
The Detective: She came in trailing rain and expensive perfume, and Dale gave me a look that said she'd done her part and the rest was my funeral. The woman sat without being asked, which told me plenty. The frightened ones never wait for the chair.
• 0:53
The Dame: There's a man named Elias Roarke. A bookkeeper. Quiet, careful, the kind who writes everything down and never once asks what it means. He's seen a name written next to a thing that name should never touch. And now he's gone to ground, and there are men looking for him who don't carry warrants.
• 1:15
The Detective: Bookkeepers go missing every day in this town. Usually they turn up in another city with a new name and somebody else's money. What makes yours worth a wet walk at nine o'clock?
• 1:24
The Dame: Because the men hunting him aren't after the money. They're after the page he can read out loud. Find him before they do, and he'll tell you the name himself. I'll pay whatever you ask. I only need him breathing when you do.
• 1:40
The Detective: So I took the job. A name, a fee, a frightened woman, three in the morning by way of nine. I'd done the same dance a hundred times, and I let myself believe I knew the steps.
• 1:51
The Dame: You'll want to start at the rooming house on Cudahy Street, the brown one by the el. He slept there last night, third floor, back room. But he won't be there long. They never let a man keep the same pillow twice.
• 2:08
The Detective: And there it was, soft as the perfume. Cudahy Street. Where he slept last night. I hadn't found that yet, but I knew exactly which of my people would have, because I was the one who'd sent him looking. She'd just handed me a fact only my own payroll could've known, and smiled like it was nothing. The hunters weren't a step ahead of me. They were standing inside my own house, and one of them had a key I'd cut myself.
• 2:37
The Detective: Frankie Slim worked a corner the way a spider works a drainpipe. You always knew where to find him, and you never liked what it told you about the weather. I came looking for a name this time. What I left with was worse. I left knowing my own pocket had a hole in it, and I knew exactly which hand had cut it.
• 2:54
The Detective: Evening, Frankie. I'm looking for a bookkeeper. Quiet little man, keeps two sets of figures, owes his health to the wrong people. Heard he's gone to ground. You hear where.
• 3:04
Frankie Slim: The bookkeeper. Sure, sure, the bookkeeper. Funny you should say it, real funny, 'cause I was just thinkin' about him. He's over the rooming house on Quill Street, top floor, back room, goes by the name Mr. Avery now. There. See? You ask Frankie, Frankie's got it. No charge, even, for an old friend.
• 3:28
The Detective: No charge. Frankie never gave away a wet match in his life. The answer came too clean and too fast, like a man reading off a card somebody handed him before I got there. He wasn't selling me the bookkeeper. He was selling the bookkeeper to whoever was paying him to watch where I'd go next.
• 3:44
The Detective: Mr. Avery. Quill Street. That's good work, Frankie. Tell you what, I'm not going there tonight. Going to sleep on it. You hear anybody asking after me, you point them at the docks. Tell them I'm working the docks.
• 3:55
Frankie Slim: The docks. Yeah. Yeah, sure, the docks, I'll, uh, I'll keep my ear down for ya, you know me. Hey, you ain't lookin' at me funny, are ya? 'Cause I'm straight with you, I'm always straight with you. Listen, I just remembered, I got a fella waitin'. I gotta go.
• 4:18
The Detective: And he was gone, off to whisper the docks into a phone that wasn't mine. I let him run. A snitch who's turned is a tool, long as he doesn't know you know. You don't plug a leak like Frankie. You feed it. The bookkeeper was never on Quill Street, and tomorrow the wrong people would be combing a wharf in the rain while I knocked on the right door. A name is a thread. But a man who'll sell you out on schedule, that's a leash. And for once, I was holding the other end.
• 4:49
The Detective: The Chronicle newsroom never closed, but at this hour it ran on cold coffee and nerve. Flynn was at his desk with his name on the front page and the front page on every newsstand in town. A byline's a fine thing, until it's a bullseye. Tonight it was both.
• 5:04
Flynn: You shouldn't be here, and I shouldn't be glad you are. You read the late edition? My name, page one, above the fold. I might as well have hung a lantern in the window. Look, the bookkeeper, your missing witness, he isn't just a loose end. He's the last set of books that still breathes. Everything else got burned. He didn't.
• 5:23
The Detective: So the man at the top doesn't want him found. He wants him buried. That's why every door I knock on, somebody's knocked first.
• 5:30
Flynn: That's the part that turns my stomach. They're a step ahead of you, every time. Whatever you tell that weasel Frankie shows up on the wrong side of town before you finish saying it. Your wire's tapped, friend, and you know whose hand is on it.
• 5:43
The Detective: I know exactly whose hand. That's the beauty of it. A leak only hurts you while you're pretending it isn't there. The day you know where the water's running out, you can decide what to pour in. So I give Frankie an address. A nice quiet one. A room my witness has never set foot in.
• 5:59
Flynn: And the hunters kick down an empty door while you move the real man out the back. That's clean. That's almost too clean. But you burn that wire once and the man at the top stops thinking you're a nuisance. He learns you're in the game to win it. After that there's no walking it back, for you or for me.
• 6:15
The Detective: He wasn't wrong. Feed a lie down a line you know is dirty, and you've told the other end you found it. That's a card you only get to play standing up. But the bookkeeper was the last honest page in this town, and I wasn't about to let the wrong men read it first. So I picked an address out of the dark, a door that led nowhere, and I went looking for Frankie to whisper it in his ear.
• 6:40
The Detective: I fed the false address to the only mouth I knew would sell it, and then I stood in a warehouse three blocks away and waited to hear the hounds run the wrong way. Somewhere across the water a car door slammed on an empty room. The bookkeeper was here, with me, breathing too loud in the dark, worth more than every name in his ledger combined.
• 6:58
The Dame: They took the bait. I watched them go. Keep him moving toward the fog and the loading door, and don't look back at me. I've got the door. I'm good at doors.
• 7:10
The Detective: Stay good at it. He walks out of here tonight, or none of this was worth a nickel.
• 7:15
The Detective: And then a match flared in the corner that was supposed to be empty, and lit up a face I'd been losing sleep over for a year.
• 7:22
Pauly Marchetti: Relax. Sit. I'm not here, see. I was never here. A man hears a little bird is singin' to the wrong people, naturally he comes down to the water to take a look. Curiosity. It's a beautiful thing.
• 7:38
The Detective: One phone call, Pauly. That's all it takes from where you're standing. The little bird never makes the boat.
• 7:44
Pauly Marchetti: It does. One call. You're right about that. But see, the men who'd thank me for it ain't my friends. They're his. And I find I'd rather watch you carry water for a dead man than do those people a single favor. So go. Walk him out. This one's free. There ain't another.
• 8:05
The Dame: Door's open. The fog'll have him before the corner. Walk slow, detective. Running is how they know to chase.
• 8:14
The Detective: So I walked him out slow, into a fog that finally did one decent thing, and the witness lived. But Marchetti had watched me do it, and the dame, and the empty room across the water that would stay empty all night. The decoy worked, and that was the trouble. By morning every man who paid for the leak would know it had run dry, and they'd all know who'd plugged it. I'd saved one man by holding up a lantern in the dark and letting the whole harbor see my face.
• 8:47
The Detective: The rain had settled in for the night, the way it does in this town when it's got nowhere better to be. The bookkeeper was on a bus to anywhere by now, alive, breathing, never knowing how close the ledger came to closing on him. I'd done that. I should have felt like something. I felt like a man who'd spent his last dollar on a round nobody drank.
• 9:07
Lt. Brogan: There you are. Standing in the rain like you're waiting for it to wash something off. It won't. I've been trying twenty years.
• 9:14
The Detective: He's clear, Paddy. The trail they laid for him went nowhere, just like it was built to. The man they wanted in the ground is above it. Call that a win.
• 9:22
Lt. Brogan: It is a win. I'll give you the whole thing, straight. One man breathes tonight who wasn't gonna. That's more than most of us manage in a year. But I keep books too, son, and I'm looking at what it cost you.
• 9:34
The Detective: Go ahead. Read me the bill.
• 9:36
Lt. Brogan: You burned your own wire to do it. Frankie's gone to ground and he won't come up, not for you, not for money, not ever again. That mouth told you things about this city nobody else would. It's shut now. And worse, you stood up in the open and let the careful man see you see the board. He knows your name. He knows you know his. There's no putting that back in the bottle.
• 10:02
Lt. Brogan: So here's the only question left, and I don't have the answer, and neither do you. A man like that, wounded, with a name in his pocket. When he reaches for the knife again, whose name does he cross off next? Yours? Or somebody you were fool enough to protect?
• 10:19
The Detective: He didn't wait for an answer I didn't have. He turned his collar up and walked off into the wet, leaving the question hanging there in the dark with me. I'd won a round. I'd saved a man. And I was standing on an emptier street than the one I'd walked into a week ago, with one less friend, no eyes left in the shadows, and a careful man somewhere across town deciding which of us he hated more. The city didn't change. It just learned my name.
