- 0:01These are the real wonders of the world.
- 0:04There's a story behind that. This is your daily message from
- 0:08Chad #1145 to upgrade your mental game today by telling
- 0:12yourself a better story. Because the most important story
- 0:15you hear is the story you tell yourself.
- 0:17This message is dedicated to Kayla Moon in celebration of her
- 0:19birthday. You can get a free copy of my

- 0:34You think the wonders of the world are things you visit, but
- 0:36upgraded thinking knows the real wonder of the world is the one
- 0:38looking at them. Here's the story.
- 0:42In June 1995, Maya Angelou stood in San Francisco at the 50th
- 0:47anniversary of the United Nations, the same city where the
- 0:49UN Charter was signed. It was only the second time in
- 0:53her life she had been asked to write for a moment this size, 2
- 0:56years before she read at a presidential inauguration.
- 1:00She wrote a new poem for the occasion, titled A Brave and
- 1:03Startling Truth, and in it she calls Earth small and lonely,
- 1:06drifting through space, past stars that don't notice us, a
- 1:10speck of dust, a drift among indifferent Suns.
- 1:13That description didn't come out of nowhere.
- 1:15It came from 50 years of humanity slowly learning just
- 1:19how small we actually are. It started October 24th, 1946,
- 1:24when scientists strapped a movie camera into the nose of a
- 1:26captured German V2 rocket in the New Mexico desert.
- 1:30It climbed 65 miles up, snapped A-frame every second and a half,
- 1:33and then slammed back into the sand.
- 1:36The camera was destroyed, but the film survived and for the
- 1:39first time, humans saw the curve of their own planet.
- 1:43It would be another 20 years in 1967 before a satellite camera
- 1:48would capture the first full photograph of the whole Earth
- 1:51hanging complete and round against black space.
- 1:54A year later, during the Apollo 8 mission, 3 astronauts were
- 1:57circling the moon on Christmas Eve 1968 with cameras pointed at
- 2:01craters when the capsule rolled and Earth rose over the horizon,
- 2:06blue and alone. In 1972, Apollo 17 turned the
- 2:10camera back one last time on the way to the moon and caught the
- 2:13whole lit Earth in a single frame, still the most reproduced
- 2:17photograph ever taken. Then on Valentine's Day 1990,
- 2:22Voyager 1 was 3.7 billion miles out beyond Neptune, done
- 2:27photographing planets. NASA was about to power down the
- 2:30cameras to conserve energy as Voyager headed out of our solar
- 2:34system. Carl Sagan asked NASA to turn
- 2:37the camera around one more time before it shut off forever.
- 2:41They did. The Earth showed up as a single
- 2:44pixel of light caught inside a stray sunbeam.
- 2:47Sagan spent the next four years writing about that little pixel
- 2:51in his book Pale Blue dot. Everyone whoever lived, he said,
- 2:56lived their whole life on that dot.
- 3:00A year later, Angelou stepped to the podium in San Francisco with
- 3:03all of this behind her. The grainy rocket photo, the
- 3:06full disc. The Earthrise.
- 3:08The blue marble, the pale dot. Every image had said the same
- 3:13thing. We're small.
- 3:14We're out here alone. We're easy to miss.
- 3:17She took that same small speck and turned it inside out.
- 3:21Not small like insignificant. Small like Precious.
- 3:25She named the pyramids, the Great Canyon, the Danube, Mount
- 3:29Fuji. The wonders we've always pointed
- 3:31to and said none of them are the real one.
- 3:35We are capable of cruelty that can stab a heart and capable of
- 3:39singing songs that can stop the heart.
- 3:42That contradiction isn't a flaw, it's the miracle.
- 3:46The better story to tell yourself is I will live like the
- 3:49wonder of the world I am. It's easy to get mired in the
- 3:54mundane and loose touch with the miracle of the journey.
- 3:57It's startling when you stop and consider it. 50 years of cameras
- 4:01pointed at Earth and it took a poet to tell us what we were
- 4:04actually looking at. I read this poem back in episode
- 4:08387 titled More That Unites. If you'd like to hear the poem
- 4:13is stuck with me, then it still does tell me a story of Wonder
- 4:17of Humanity to from chadsmith@gmail.com.
- 4:21Send someone a text and tell them you're a wonder of the
- 4:24world.
