- 1:49Speaker 3: Some people were without power last night. We didn't have

- 2:42Speaker 3: the show now from Augden Newspapers. Are good, friend, Steven
- 2:44Speaker 3: Alan Adams, How you doing, my friend?
- 2:47Speaker 5: I hear that there is a milestone going on today.
- 2:52Speaker 6: What's so? What's the milestone?
- 2:54Speaker 3: I am just trying to figure out what the heck
- 2:56Speaker 3: Chris Lawrence has done to this microphone, because it's like
- 2:58Speaker 3: it's in such a position and there we go that
- 3:01Speaker 3: I can't even turn the mic off and on. I
- 3:03Speaker 3: don't know what Chris has got deer jerky hanging from
- 3:05Speaker 3: it or something. Man, I don't what the heck.
- 3:07Speaker 6: He's done here, but you're drying some leather on it.
- 3:09Speaker 3: I don't know what the homesteader is doing over here,
- 3:11Speaker 3: but I don't know what he's done to it. But anyway, yeah,
- 3:15Speaker 3: yeah today. And you know, I'll say this, I like
- 3:18Speaker 3: a good Bob Evans mule as much as the next person.
- 3:21Speaker 3: As much as the next person as I am somebody
- 3:23Speaker 3: that prefers to, you know, eat locally. But nothing against
- 3:27Speaker 3: the good folks of Bob Evans or any of those
- 3:28Speaker 3: they employ a lot of people. Uh, and so, but
- 3:33Speaker 3: everybody since yesterday has been telling me that effective today,
- 3:38Speaker 3: I can order off the back of the bob Evans menu. Uh,
- 3:41Speaker 3: because today I turned fifty five today. I did not
- 3:44Speaker 3: know that that was even a thing. And again I'm
- 3:47Speaker 3: not anti that bob Evans. I eat there. You know,
- 3:49Speaker 3: from time to time, I just did not. I guess
- 3:51Speaker 3: I just never noticed it because it didn't pertain to me.
- 3:54Speaker 3: But effective today, people tell me I can order off
- 3:56Speaker 3: the back of the bob Evans menu.
- 3:59Speaker 5: I got a question about all that. By the way,
- 4:03Speaker 5: we're living longer for the most part as adults, Why
- 4:07Speaker 5: are we still having these? Shouldn't it be higher? Should
- 4:11Speaker 5: it not be fifty five? Shit, be sixty five seventy.
- 4:15Speaker 5: I mean, obviously we're keeping you know, people don't want
- 4:18Speaker 5: to have their social security you know, retirement age raise.
- 4:21Speaker 3: What social security?
- 4:22Speaker 5: Well that's a good point, but like you know, I
- 4:25Speaker 5: think we were talking before the show. AARP you can
- 4:28Speaker 5: go on that at forty. I'm forty three.
- 4:31Speaker 6: I'm not going on a I don't.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Know exactly what the year is. And my good friend
- 4:35Speaker 3: Tom Hunter is listening. He can let me, he can
- 4:37Speaker 3: let me know right for today. But yeah, I got
- 4:40Speaker 3: I got an AARP card long ago. And my good
- 4:44Speaker 3: buddy Jim Strawn, who you know is a frequent guest
- 4:47Speaker 3: to the show, was talking to Strang last week. Strawn
- 4:49Speaker 3: and his wife have a condo in Saint Pete and
- 4:52Speaker 3: he texted me last week and said, hey, I understand
- 4:54Speaker 3: you turning fifty five next week. You can officially stay
- 4:57Speaker 3: in my condo now because it's in the fifty five.
- 5:00Speaker 3: And I know you look look at him and you
- 5:01Speaker 3: think there's no way to Jim Strown's fifty five, But yeah,
- 5:03Speaker 3: he's fifty five plus.
- 5:05Speaker 6: Oh, I assume he was older.
- 5:07Speaker 3: I can No, he's older than I am. I'll put
- 5:12Speaker 3: it that way. I'm not really sure how old Jimmy is,
- 5:14Speaker 3: but nonetheless he tells me I can stay in his
- 5:16Speaker 3: condo now because yeah, and you know, here's the thing
- 5:18Speaker 3: about it. I remember, you know, everybody said, oh, you know,
- 5:22Speaker 3: turning thirty was the worst possible thing in the world. Well,
- 5:26Speaker 3: I turned thirty and survived, and then they're all, forty
- 5:29Speaker 3: forty is the big thing, and then it was fifty
- 5:32Speaker 3: and now it's fifty five. And yeah, I'll be honest
- 5:35Speaker 3: with you, I have been extremely blessed in my time.
- 5:39Speaker 3: I've I am on one medication and that is for
- 5:44Speaker 3: high blood pressure, and that's it.
- 5:47Speaker 6: I have heard me.
- 5:48Speaker 3: I eat. I still, you know, eat like a college kid.
- 5:52Speaker 3: To a certain extent, I am a food If you
- 5:54Speaker 3: follow me on social media, you'll know that carry a
- 5:57Speaker 3: little bit too much around the middle of you know.
- 6:00Speaker 3: But other than that, I'm I'm in pretty good shape.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Now.
- 6:03Speaker 3: I could say that, and I could probably drop that.
- 6:05Speaker 3: Speaking of dropping dead, Steve, I want to say thank
- 6:09Speaker 3: you to you for last week, and I've told the
- 6:14Speaker 3: story on the air and I've had a lot of
- 6:15Speaker 3: fun with it. But so we could go Sunday back
- 6:18Speaker 3: when the Cowboys used to win games and not get
- 6:20Speaker 3: blown out by inferior team.
- 6:22Speaker 6: Like I was gonna bring you some toimes today as
- 6:24Speaker 6: a birthday give.
- 6:26Speaker 3: You know, so you know the Stephen, we could go
- 6:30Speaker 3: Sunday and that Cowboys exciting overtime game. Uh, tweets out
- 6:36Speaker 3: you still call them tweets x's out post if whenever
- 6:39Speaker 3: twet tweets out something to the effect of thought and
- 6:42Speaker 3: prayers for Dave Allen on his heart and it was
- 6:44Speaker 3: because of the Cowboys. And then I start getting random
- 6:47Speaker 3: texts from people saying, hey, are you okay? And then
- 6:49Speaker 3: you texted me. You text me and said you're probably
- 6:53Speaker 3: going to start getting text about your heart condition, and uh,
- 6:58Speaker 3: and I appreciate you can started, but no, it wasn't.
- 7:01Speaker 3: It was game related. It had nothing to do with
- 7:03Speaker 3: the old ticker.
- 7:05Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, man, I I've been around the internet
- 7:09Speaker 5: for hotman and I'm a genial, which means I'm I
- 7:13Speaker 5: hate that word too, but like it's accommodation of millennial
- 7:17Speaker 5: and gen x, and I consider myself more of a
- 7:20Speaker 5: gen x.
- 7:20Speaker 3: Either your gen X, I don't care when you were bad.
- 7:23Speaker 6: I'm a gen xer. By all leaps and backs.
- 7:26Speaker 3: You and I may be boomers. Actually I mean, I
- 7:28Speaker 3: know technically we're gen X, but I got I got
- 7:30Speaker 3: boomer tendencies.
- 7:31Speaker 5: I was one of the say I feel safe in
- 7:33Speaker 5: saving it was one of the state's first bloggers, and
- 7:35Speaker 5: then you were And then micro blogging came along, which
- 7:39Speaker 5: is what Twitter was called. It was a micro blogging
- 7:42Speaker 5: service and ever since then, everyone's been putting their thoughts
- 7:46Speaker 5: out there. And as we've discovered over the last nearly
- 7:49Speaker 5: twenty years of this service, it's it's a nightmare and
- 7:53Speaker 5: it's a cesspool. And West Virginia twitter x is a
- 7:57Speaker 5: very small community. I thought more people knew your love
- 8:02Speaker 5: of the Cowboys then I guess actually did. So when
- 8:06Speaker 5: I put that out there, people went for the worst
- 8:08Speaker 5: case scenario. I'm like, I'm like, did you not watch
- 8:11Speaker 5: the Cowboys game? Like all we do is have Cowboys
- 8:13Speaker 5: like TV like football and the TV now in our
- 8:16Speaker 5: house on Sundays.
- 8:17Speaker 6: I watched that game. I nearly had a heart attack.
- 8:19Speaker 5: Like I thought people would understand, but some people didn't.
- 8:23Speaker 5: So be careful what you just put out there as
- 8:26Speaker 5: we have learned in the last few weeks.
- 8:28Speaker 3: Yeah, but but it came from a good place and
- 8:31Speaker 3: it was actually funny later because you know, I got
- 8:34Speaker 3: to do a little little front porch setting in my
- 8:36Speaker 3: cowboys gear and talk about it and everything. But it's
- 8:39Speaker 3: nice to know that people care.
- 8:40Speaker 6: People do care people.
- 8:42Speaker 3: That was the nice statement. No, my my heart is
- 8:44Speaker 3: fine as far as I know anyway. But they've alent
- 8:46Speaker 3: show on five any Live is brought to you a
- 8:47Speaker 3: part by Jute j o ot Security systems is protected
- 8:50Speaker 3: by jute dot com or check them out on Facebook.
- 8:53Speaker 3: So what's now? Uh uh in your world? You know,
- 8:56Speaker 3: we were talking before the show, and Brad and I
- 8:58Speaker 3: were talking last hour too. I mean political. I do
- 9:01Speaker 3: have a couple of things political I want to bring up.
- 9:03Speaker 3: But you know, no special session.
- 9:05Speaker 5: No special session. No, it probably won't be one. I
- 9:07Speaker 5: really don't think there's going to be one.
- 9:09Speaker 3: I don't think so.
- 9:09Speaker 5: If there is, it's going to be next month. That's
- 9:11Speaker 5: the best opportunity. November the lawmakers travel to Pipe Stem
- 9:15Speaker 5: so as the traveling interims, you're not going to do
- 9:17Speaker 5: it then.
- 9:17Speaker 3: And I have something in October to.
- 9:20Speaker 5: They have a normal interims not normal. But that's that's
- 9:22Speaker 5: why I say the October ideal time to do it.
- 9:26Speaker 5: December at that point, I mean, what's the point. I mean,
- 9:29Speaker 5: Brad's written some good stories about PIA. I've covered some
- 9:32Speaker 5: issues with PI and looked into reports, and the thirty
- 9:34Speaker 5: secret is outside of some issues that were caused which
- 9:38Speaker 5: caused the premiums to get frozen, didn't cause them to
- 9:41Speaker 5: go up all of a sudden, stuff like that. We're
- 9:44Speaker 5: kind of out of that, out of those woods right now. PIA.
- 9:47Speaker 5: The actual finances of it are fine. The problem is
- 9:51Speaker 5: healthcare costs, prescription drug costs, which you're going to keep
- 9:54Speaker 5: going up in the state's got to deal with that.
- 9:56Speaker 5: But they could deal with that in a regular session
- 9:58Speaker 5: and how to kind of find and weighs the save
- 10:00Speaker 5: money here and there.
- 10:02Speaker 6: I don't think they'll go to extreme methods.
- 10:04Speaker 5: They're not going to privatize, they're not going to kick
- 10:07Speaker 5: city and county employees off, They're not going to make
- 10:09Speaker 5: spouses get kicked off. I don't think that's gonna happen.
- 10:13Speaker 5: Not an election here, but they'll do some stuff here.
- 10:15Speaker 5: I think in the regular session they can wait.
- 10:16Speaker 3: All right, I talk to Steven Allen Adams of Ogden Newspapers.
- 10:19Speaker 3: I want to talk to you about the number of
- 10:22Speaker 3: Republicans that are that are that are running for office.
- 10:25Speaker 3: And look, you know, the Democrats controlled was Virginia for
- 10:28Speaker 3: eighty three years and it was the same thing then
- 10:30Speaker 3: growing up where I did. The election was held in May. Uh,
- 10:35Speaker 3: there was no general election unless you had president on
- 10:37Speaker 3: the ballot or something or may be governor. Uh, it
- 10:40Speaker 3: was the all Democrats. Everything was decided, you know, second
- 10:43Speaker 3: Tuesday in May or whatever. It is all right. Uh,
- 10:46Speaker 3: but now we're starting to see that with the Republicans.
- 10:48Speaker 3: And I say that because and I'll give you I'll
- 10:51Speaker 3: give you one example, uh, State Center District four, which
- 10:54Speaker 3: this particular seat that that Eric Tarr, doctor Sittson, doctor
- 10:58Speaker 3: Surface is running. There's at least one of the gentlemen.
- 11:03Speaker 3: And I've had him both on the show. Actually had
- 11:06Speaker 3: had to Eric Turrn the show last week. But there's
- 11:08Speaker 3: another gentleman, Travis Willard, that's running. He's been on the show.
- 11:11Speaker 3: Doctor Phillips Servias was on the show yesterday. I was
- 11:13Speaker 3: told this morning that there's another one. I don't know.
- 11:15Speaker 3: I haven't looked it up to see and I say
- 11:18Speaker 3: that because it's still early. I mean, yeah, today is
- 11:20Speaker 3: the first full day of fall. Used to be you
- 11:23Speaker 3: didn't have these announcements. But it's all about it's all
- 11:25Speaker 3: about running. I just think it's interesting and I'm not
- 11:28Speaker 3: I'm not on either side. I'm just saying I think
- 11:30Speaker 3: it's interesting that now the Republicans and I'm hearing that
- 11:35Speaker 3: there's going to be primary opponents for everybody around the
- 11:38Speaker 3: state of West Virginia. It's just interesting.
- 11:40Speaker 6: Oh, it really is.
- 11:42Speaker 5: A canadithiling period will begin in January last for more
- 11:45Speaker 5: or less a month, and you're right, a lot of
- 11:47Speaker 5: these elections will probably get settled in May twenty twenty six.
- 11:52Speaker 5: And you're talking about, as we've talked about over the years,
- 11:55Speaker 5: different factions of Republicans flight red versus dark red, far
- 12:00Speaker 5: versus more moderate. And that's going to be really interesting
- 12:03Speaker 5: to see once we get further into the election period, because,
- 12:06Speaker 5: as we've talked about, also your independent that your un
- 12:09Speaker 5: affiliated voters cannot vote in the Republican primary this year,
- 12:13Speaker 5: so some of those voters that might have gone more
- 12:15Speaker 5: moderate aren't going to be there unless they switch parties,
- 12:19Speaker 5: and that's going to create real interesting in dynamics. So
- 12:22Speaker 5: who's going to contain get more control over to Western
- 12:24Speaker 5: Ginia legislature after twenty twenty six. This is going to
- 12:26Speaker 5: be the light red or the dark red. That's what's
- 12:28Speaker 5: going to be really interesting to see.
- 12:30Speaker 3: I talked to one state senator earlier this morning who's
- 12:33Speaker 3: not named Eric Tarr. I'll say it's not Eric Tar.
- 12:35Speaker 3: I did talk to a one state senator who told me,
- 12:38Speaker 3: and I won't mention his or her name, but this
- 12:40Speaker 3: person told me, I am more worried about the far
- 12:44Speaker 3: right of the Republican Party than I am the Democrats.
- 12:46Speaker 3: And I mean rightfully so, probably because the numbers, Yeah,
- 12:50Speaker 3: it's simple numbers. But this person told me. They said
- 12:52Speaker 3: that they were very, very concerned about the far right
- 12:55Speaker 3: wing of the Republican Party more so than what they
- 12:59Speaker 3: were about the Democrats.
- 13:01Speaker 5: Yeah, I can understand that concern. We've kind of seen
- 13:05Speaker 5: the legislature take on, certainly more of a weirdly enough
- 13:10Speaker 5: for Republicans, a big government view, wanting more governments say
- 13:14Speaker 5: and control on different aspects of our lives. We've seen
- 13:18Speaker 5: that through different legislation that popped up during the most
- 13:20Speaker 5: recent legislative session.
- 13:24Speaker 6: A little bit of short horseshoe theory too.
- 13:26Speaker 5: There are some issues now that you have thought would
- 13:28Speaker 5: have been on the far left and now are on
- 13:29Speaker 5: the far right. The vaccine issues certainly is one of them.
- 13:31Speaker 5: And we could see something even next year, something similar
- 13:35Speaker 5: to what's happening in Florida, where someone introduces a bill
- 13:37Speaker 5: just to get rid of vaccine requirements for school children altogether.
- 13:41Speaker 5: We'll see if that happens, and I don't know if
- 13:43Speaker 5: it would go anywhere if they did, but point being,
- 13:46Speaker 5: you are going to see more instances like that that
- 13:49Speaker 5: they're going to cause some people concern and voters are
- 13:52Speaker 5: going to have to make a choice down the road
- 13:55Speaker 5: as to whether they that's the path they want to
- 13:57Speaker 5: go down or not. They could backfire report publicans too.
- 14:01Speaker 3: Steven Allen Adams. Before I let you go, I was
- 14:04Speaker 3: told by someone in the office that you have an
- 14:06Speaker 3: award coming up.
- 14:08Speaker 5: Well, yeah, are you're allowed to talk about it? I
- 14:10Speaker 5: can't talk about yeah, okay, but yeah, we do have
- 14:14Speaker 5: our Western Jinnia Press Association Awards coming up. Our annual
- 14:19Speaker 5: convention is October eleventh here in Charleston. So that's the
- 14:24Speaker 5: largest newspapers in the state. Like ours, the gazet Mail,
- 14:27Speaker 5: Clarksburgax's Pone Telegram, all way down to the small weeklies.
- 14:31Speaker 6: I'll submit articles for awards. So yeah, I'm up for at.
- 14:37Speaker 5: Least I'm up for at least three, Okay, and I'm
- 14:40Speaker 5: pretty excited about that to add to to my my
- 14:44Speaker 5: trophy area.
- 14:45Speaker 3: So now you've you've certainly learned it, my friend, and

- 18:00Speaker 3: thank you. Once one day you'll turn fifty five. No,
- 18:03Speaker 3: I quit counting at fifty three. Fifty three? Was that
- 18:06Speaker 3: just thing?
- 18:07Speaker 12: It was just it was just one of those years
- 18:10Speaker 12: where you just said I'm done, I'm not going counting
- 18:12Speaker 12: count Yeah. Hello, and it's been twenty five years since then.
- 18:18Speaker 3: Carry the three double mind. Come on, let that logan

- 18:25Speaker 3: we can't do the math, we just recruit somebody that
- 18:27Speaker 3: can do it. Well, that's what you anyway, Welcome to
- 18:30Speaker 3: the show. Announcement made yesterday that Jack Cookfield, the new
- 18:34Speaker 3: home of Marshall University's baseball team, will be the new
- 18:37Speaker 3: home for the State Baseball Tournament.
- 18:38Speaker 12: Good your thoughts great. I think it's wonderful. You know,
- 18:42Speaker 12: to take nothing away from the city of Charleston, they
- 18:44Speaker 12: hosted that event for forty five years nineteen eighty. I've
- 18:49Speaker 12: done games at Watt Powell Park up on the roof
- 18:51Speaker 12: when the old tar roof was melting in the hot,
- 18:54Speaker 12: hot sun, the showcase event at a show place.
- 19:00Speaker 3: I think the field is awesome down there. I mean
- 19:03Speaker 3: it's it's incredible. And lord, I mean I was a
- 19:06Speaker 3: student at Marshall starting in nineteen ninety they were talking
- 19:09Speaker 3: about a stadium then. If that tells you anything, that's
- 19:12Speaker 3: when they were playing at Saint Cloud's Commons.
- 19:13Speaker 12: Young man that went to Woodrow Wilson High School in
- 19:17Speaker 12: Beckley and great baseball player Steve Ball, and they recruited
- 19:21Speaker 12: Steve Ball to play baseball in Huntington at Marshall University.
- 19:25Speaker 12: With that, Hey, we're going to have a new stadium
- 19:28Speaker 12: nineteen ninety two.
- 19:29Speaker 3: Yeah, it's been a long time coming, but I agree.
- 19:33Speaker 3: I mean, I'm sure it's the city of Charleston. And
- 19:37Speaker 3: I don't you know more than I do about how
- 19:38Speaker 3: all the whole process works out. But the city of
- 19:41Speaker 3: Charlestons you said, has hosted it since nineteen eighty. And
- 19:46Speaker 3: as much as I love the city that I that
- 19:48Speaker 3: I work in, and I think the city over the
- 19:50Speaker 3: years has done a fantastic job on that, I think
- 19:52Speaker 3: it's good, you know, to maybe move things around a
- 19:54Speaker 3: little big gif give some other cities a little slice of.
- 19:57Speaker 12: The pie, and you have to look at what else
- 19:59Speaker 12: is still remaining in Charles.
- 20:01Speaker 3: Yeah, it's not like the city's going out of business.
- 20:03Speaker 12: I still have the track meet. They have baseball or
- 20:06Speaker 12: the basketball, the football, they have cheerleading. Uh you know,
- 20:09Speaker 12: just across in another small in another town just close
- 20:13Speaker 12: to here, in South Charleston, they have the softball So
- 20:15Speaker 12: I mean which for years, right, they have tennis here
- 20:18Speaker 12: in Charleston. So yeah, it is good and I don't
- 20:22Speaker 12: think they could have picked up better place, particularly in
- 20:24Speaker 12: the fact that we're going to a ridiculous number of
- 20:29Speaker 12: games in twenty.
- 20:30Speaker 3: Six that's that's your biggest concern, and it is the
- 20:33Speaker 3: number of games that work play weather.
- 20:35Speaker 12: Yeah, you know, as beautiful as the field is in
- 20:38Speaker 12: Marshall University. It's not a dome, you know, And I
- 20:41Speaker 12: mean weather can play a part that time of the year,
- 20:44Speaker 12: and you've got the softball tournament backing right up against
- 20:47Speaker 12: it the week prior to that, so you know, you
- 20:50Speaker 12: just you got to hope for two weeks of great
- 20:52Speaker 12: weather and then you get them in.
- 20:53Speaker 3: And that's fair which is likely not going to happen
- 20:55Speaker 3: in June, I mean, because it is. That's you know,
- 20:58Speaker 3: that's that's kind of the way.
- 20:59Speaker 12: It is a seven day of that They'll start on Saturday,
- 21:02Speaker 12: June sixth, skip Sunday, and then all the following next
- 21:06Speaker 12: week through Saturday will be baseball as well. So it's
- 21:10Speaker 12: but you have to do that in order to get
- 21:12Speaker 12: that many games in. We used to have four teams.
- 21:14Speaker 12: Now you got eight teams and four classes.
- 21:16Speaker 3: That's thirty two team names that are coming again. As
- 21:19Speaker 3: I said, you're not a fan of expanding the playoffs
- 21:22Speaker 3: so much.
- 21:22Speaker 12: I'm not a fan of four classes. I've said that
- 21:24Speaker 12: many towsand times. It's the state's just too small. It's
- 21:28Speaker 12: just too small. And I get what they're saying. You know,
- 21:30Speaker 12: we're seeing teams at the State championship events that have
- 21:34Speaker 12: never been there before. Okay, fine, I guess, but still,
- 21:41Speaker 12: in my opinion, and just my opinion, I don't think
- 21:44Speaker 12: a senior in high school wants to go out their
- 21:46Speaker 12: last game in basketball they got beat by sixty Ye
- 21:51Speaker 12: what kind of a remember? What kind of a memory
- 21:52Speaker 12: is that? And I see that happening all the time.
- 21:55Speaker 12: But again, they did not consult me when they went.
- 21:59Speaker 3: To what exactly explain for people that don't know what
- 22:04Speaker 3: exactly goes into the bidding process for these cities? How
- 22:08Speaker 3: does it? And I know maybe every situation is different,
- 22:10Speaker 3: but just give us an overview.
- 22:12Speaker 12: Overview simple enough that you have a certain period of
- 22:15Speaker 12: time to submit your bid, your bid meaning for the
- 22:19Speaker 12: city that you want to represent. And I mean it's
- 22:21Speaker 12: not just one person going up with a piece of paper.
- 22:23Speaker 12: I mean these bids really get down into the nitty
- 22:26Speaker 12: gritty what are you going to do for all of
- 22:27Speaker 12: the teams and what kind of an experience is it
- 22:31Speaker 12: going to be for the teams? And there is a
- 22:34Speaker 12: dollar figure, of course, affixed to all of that. And honestly,
- 22:38Speaker 12: the ssac's board of directors, they look at all of
- 22:41Speaker 12: them and what is best for the student athlete. What
- 22:44Speaker 12: kind of experience is it going to be? And I
- 22:47Speaker 12: think sometimes I think Wheeling is a great example. Wheeling
- 22:52Speaker 12: had football for thirty years and I didn't see it
- 22:55Speaker 12: leaving Wheeling because I thought they did just an excellent job.
- 22:58Speaker 12: But give credit to Mike Harbigaff and that crew here
- 23:00Speaker 12: in Charleston last year. I had zero problems with it
- 23:04Speaker 12: being in Charleston. I thought it was great. They did
- 23:06Speaker 12: an excellent job. They've got a huge meeting coming up
- 23:09Speaker 12: on October the sixth where they're going to go over
- 23:11Speaker 12: everything and see how they can even make it better
- 23:14Speaker 12: than they did last year. And that's what it's about.
- 23:16Speaker 12: You get it one year, everybody's excited. It's the next year.
- 23:19Speaker 12: You can't let down. You got to make it better.
- 23:21Speaker 12: And so I see that happening in Charleston. So again,
- 23:24Speaker 12: once the bids are all in, then they're all looked
- 23:28Speaker 12: at by the board of directors and they say, okay,
- 23:31Speaker 12: we'll have a vote on it. And the bid getting
- 23:34Speaker 12: the most boats is through bid is going to win.
- 23:36Speaker 12: And a lot of times, though I think it's only
- 23:39Speaker 12: fair to state, a lot of times there's only one
- 23:41Speaker 12: bid because cities like for example, the cross country. I
- 23:47Speaker 12: don't think you can take it to a better place
- 23:50Speaker 12: than where it's at now, and that's at Cabal Midlands
- 23:52Speaker 12: cross Country Field in Ona. I mean that course was
- 23:56Speaker 12: built directly because they wanted that state tournament event and
- 24:00Speaker 12: that's what they get. Soccer's in Beckley. They've got two
- 24:03Speaker 12: back to back turfed soccer fields at Clined Soccer Complex
- 24:07Speaker 12: and that's where it's been for quite a while now
- 24:09Speaker 12: and we'll stay there for a while until somebody comes
- 24:11Speaker 12: up with what might be a better bid. But you
- 24:13Speaker 12: got to have the facilities, number one. That's why Marshall
- 24:16Speaker 12: never did get baseball. They didn't have the facilities for you.
- 24:18Speaker 12: Now they've got them and they put in a great bid.
- 24:21Speaker 12: Marshall University got behind this, I understand, along with the
- 24:24Speaker 12: city of Huntington. And it's smart for Marshall because everyone
- 24:28Speaker 12: in the area here knows about the brand new baseball
- 24:32Speaker 12: field at Marshall University. Not too many folks outside the
- 24:35Speaker 12: state are around the state and they'll get that exposure,
- 24:39Speaker 12: so they know they're smart, they know what they're doing.
- 24:41Speaker 12: So I think it's great and again absolutely nothing against
- 24:45Speaker 12: the city of Charleston.
- 24:46Speaker 3: They did a great job for forty years. Forty five years.
- 24:49Speaker 3: That's an incredible run when you think about it. I
- 24:51Speaker 3: mean when you think about the age of I mean
- 24:54Speaker 3: we're talking a lot about ages today with this being
- 24:56Speaker 3: my birthday in nineteen eighty in Yunon of nineteen eighty
- 25:01Speaker 3: I was nine years old about to turn ten, so
- 25:04Speaker 3: that should tell you. So I was a little older
- 25:06Speaker 3: than that, just a little bit. But you stopped counting
- 25:08Speaker 3: at age eleven, I think you said, or something like that.
- 25:11Speaker 3: But yeah, I mean, and I think it's great. By
- 25:13Speaker 3: the way, I will mention that the Mayor of Huntington,
- 25:16Speaker 3: Patrick Ferrell's going to be on Metro News midday today
- 25:18Speaker 3: to talk about it.
- 25:19Speaker 12: We reached out to him as they have to be
- 25:21Speaker 12: excited about it. I know folks at Marshall University. I
- 25:24Speaker 12: talked with some folks last night. They're thrilled about the
- 25:27Speaker 12: fact that they get it and they will do an
- 25:29Speaker 12: excellent job with it. Steve Cotton, everybody our buddy. Steve Cotton.
- 25:33Speaker 12: He said, Reid, you're going to love the press box
- 25:36Speaker 12: because it was designed for broadcasters. So looking forward to that.
- 25:39Speaker 3: Well, and you're somebody like me who lives at the
- 25:41Speaker 3: halfway point, and I'm talking about personal reasons. You know,
- 25:44Speaker 3: you live at the halfway point as I, so you
- 25:46Speaker 3: can be in Huntington once you get through the red
- 25:49Speaker 3: light and the construction on how Greer Boulevard. I think
- 25:51Speaker 3: how Greer actually started that construction. That's how long ago
- 25:54Speaker 3: it's been. But that whole area has been under construction.
- 25:56Speaker 3: But that notwithstanding, it's just as easy for you for
- 25:59Speaker 3: a person reason to be in Honey Times is Worth.
- 26:02Speaker 12: Charles and I talked with Travis Jones about that yesterday.
- 26:04Speaker 12: I said, I'm fine, you know, because what is great
- 26:07Speaker 12: about being a part of the broadcast team for all
- 26:09Speaker 12: the state broadcasts that we do. You know sometimes staying
- 26:12Speaker 12: in a hotel. I stay in enough hotel rooms, you know,
- 26:14Speaker 12: during this time of the year, so I get to
- 26:17Speaker 12: stay at home and still do the tournament.
- 26:19Speaker 3: That's that's fantastic. I love that.
- 26:21Speaker 12: So it's it's gonna be it's great. It's great for
- 26:23Speaker 12: high school baseball fans. It holds thirty five hundred, which
- 26:27Speaker 12: is perfect for this tournament. And I think it's gonna
- 26:30Speaker 12: be wonderful. I'm looking forward to it. I think it'll
- 26:32Speaker 12: be a great, great thing to do.
- 26:33Speaker 3: And it's I don't have the dates in front of me.
- 26:35Speaker 3: I think it's like six through the Thirtjune sixth through
- 26:38Speaker 3: the thirteenth. It's already make any plans, all right? Before
- 26:41Speaker 3: we let you go, we have you on Metro News
- 26:42Speaker 3: Midday every Wednesday to talk about the Power Index and
- 26:45Speaker 3: the ratings and so on and so forth. Give you
- 26:48Speaker 3: just a little bit of a preview. We'll have you
- 26:49Speaker 3: on the show at one forty five tomorrow afternoon. Anything
- 26:52Speaker 3: just kind of come out and surprise you anything, any
- 26:55Speaker 3: any big news out of the Power Index? Can I
- 26:58Speaker 3: mention to my Logan Wilde answer? Now four and o
- 27:01Speaker 3: for the first time since nineteen ninety.
- 27:02Speaker 12: Coach Nick Booth is doing a great job, and they're
- 27:04Speaker 12: going into the bye week this week, and I talked
- 27:05Speaker 12: to great time for them.
- 27:07Speaker 3: I talked to him a couple of weeks ago. He said, I,
- 27:08Speaker 3: you know, coaches don't coach speak. You know, we were
- 27:11Speaker 3: texting back and more, and he said, I would like
- 27:14Speaker 3: I would like to be four and o going into
- 27:16Speaker 3: the bye week. And they beat Wayne on the Island
- 27:18Speaker 3: last week, so so they're four and oh.
- 27:20Speaker 12: But anything else, it's you know, I got the ratings
- 27:22Speaker 12: this morning from the S S a C for week five.
- 27:25Speaker 3: It's actually weeks week four.
- 27:28Speaker 12: This is week five of the games, but everything's still
- 27:32Speaker 12: you know, I honestly think they bring the rating out
- 27:34Speaker 12: too soon because other people said, but this Friday night,
- 27:39Speaker 12: there will be nine teams in the state that will
- 27:41Speaker 12: complete half of their regular season. Nine teams already and
- 27:47Speaker 12: every day we say it every year and where did
- 27:48Speaker 12: the season go. We're already halfway through for nine teams,
- 27:52Speaker 12: so you know, it's uh, it's just one of those
- 27:54Speaker 12: crazy things. But we still have a couple of teams
- 27:57Speaker 12: in Class Quade that at the playoffs started today, they
- 28:00Speaker 12: would be in the they would be in the field
- 28:01Speaker 12: of sixteen.
- 28:02Speaker 3: They haven't won a game. Yeah, and now let's let's
- 28:06Speaker 3: let that sink in from they have they have not
- 28:08Speaker 3: won any single game, but they would make the play.
- 28:10Speaker 12: At making Wales, yeah, if it started tonight. So it
- 28:13Speaker 12: was the I don't know.
- 28:14Speaker 3: I also wanted to give you just a quick moment
- 28:16Speaker 3: to reflect on Sean Clark. I mean, you know Sean Clark.
- 28:19Speaker 3: He uh George Washington High graduate, of course, went down
- 28:22Speaker 3: to Appalachi State, had to standout career there coach that
- 28:25Speaker 3: team and was now an assistant coach UCF doing a
- 28:29Speaker 3: great job.
- 28:29Speaker 12: There as well. Such a young man fifty years old,
- 28:32Speaker 12: you know, and though he's in the hospital understand for
- 28:34Speaker 12: a couple of weeks, uh, down in Orlando, and uh, yeah,
- 28:37Speaker 12: it's the you hate to see say.
- 28:39Speaker 3: True. I did not know him personally, but from everybody
- 28:42Speaker 3: that I knew that did know Sean, he was a
- 28:46Speaker 3: uh he was a gentleman first and foremost. That's what
- 28:48Speaker 3: I was. That's exactly the words that they were told
- 28:50Speaker 3: to me, no doubt about it. He was a gentleman.
- 28:53Speaker 12: He knew he knew football as well as anyone at
- 28:56Speaker 12: obviously or what he had done with his career and
- 28:59Speaker 12: just cut short way.
- 29:00Speaker 3: Yeah, and our thoughts and prayers to his his wife
- 29:03Speaker 3: and two kids.
- 29:04Speaker 4: Uh.
- 29:04Speaker 3: You know, Sean was fifty years old, native of Charleston,
- 29:07Speaker 3: went down to Appalachian State, were his best known. Of course,
- 29:10Speaker 3: he was assistant that you see, Fred, It's always a

- 31:28Speaker 14: Sports Five years after the peak of COVID, the US
- 31:32Speaker 14: healthcare system is still facing a serious workforce shortage. A
- 31:35Speaker 14: new Harris Poles survey commissioned by Strategic Education reveals that
- 31:39Speaker 14: burnout and a lack of advancement are key reasons why.
- 31:43Speaker 14: With more here is doctor Lisa Krieger, Executive Deans, School
- 31:46Speaker 14: of Nursing and Health Sciences at Capella University.
- 31:49Speaker 15: The survey indicates many healthcare workers feel taken for granted
- 31:53Speaker 15: and often aren't given clear opportunities for career growth, which
- 31:57Speaker 15: adds to the strain of an already demanding job.
- 32:00Speaker 14: It also found that over half of healthcare workers admit
- 32:03Speaker 14: they'll look for a new role in the next year.
- 32:06Speaker 14: Access to education and training could make a real difference

- 33:32Speaker 3: Martin is going to join us. Now. You may remember her.
- 33:35Speaker 3: She's a native of Mullins in Wyoming County. Kind of
- 33:38Speaker 3: out of the limelight for a little while, but I
- 33:40Speaker 3: mean she her star really exploded, you know, decaded or so,
- 33:46Speaker 3: maybe two decades or so ago, and now she has
- 33:48Speaker 3: a movie. There was a very popular documentary about her.
- 33:52Speaker 3: But now she has a movie coming out about her life.
- 33:56Speaker 3: When Sydney's Sweeney, everyone's favorite jeans model, will be playing
- 34:01Speaker 3: her in a movie. And Christy actually made an appearance
- 34:04Speaker 3: on the carl Lee podcast a couple of weeks ago,
- 34:09Speaker 3: and so she's actually going to be on the show
- 34:12Speaker 3: with us today. So we're looking forward to talking to her.
- 34:15Speaker 3: Mentioned earlier. Huntington Mayor Patrick Ferrell will be on the
- 34:18Speaker 3: show today to talk about the city of Huntington getting
- 34:21Speaker 3: the state Baseball Tournament for the first time since nineteen eighty.
- 34:25Speaker 3: The state Baseball Tournament will not be played in Charleston
- 34:30Speaker 3: for so many years at wat Powell Park and then
- 34:31Speaker 3: later at gomart Ballpark, and the bids and it was
- 34:37Speaker 3: put out to a bit as it is in the
- 34:39Speaker 3: city of Huntington got it and it's a big deal
- 34:42Speaker 3: for the city of Huntington Marshall University. Of course they
- 34:44Speaker 3: got the Jack Cook Field. The Field of Dreams is
- 34:47Speaker 3: what people around Huntingson call it. And I'll tell you,
- 34:49Speaker 3: if you've never seen that stadium, it is phenomenal. Not
- 34:52Speaker 3: throwing any shade on Gomart Ballpark, which still looks great
- 34:54Speaker 3: after all these years. Twenty years now Gomart Ballpark formerly
- 34:58Speaker 3: Appalachian Power Park has been open. But I'll tell you this,
- 35:03Speaker 3: this field in Huntington is fantastic. So I think I
- 35:07Speaker 3: think it's good. We're gonna talk to Patrick Ferrell about that.
- 35:10Speaker 3: And as I said earlier in my conversation with Fred,
- 35:12Speaker 3: I just I like shaking it up every now. And
- 35:14Speaker 3: I'm sorry I haven't talked to anybody from the city
- 35:16Speaker 3: of Charleston, but I'm sure they were, you know, they
- 35:19Speaker 3: weren't happy about the situation. But you know what, Charleston
- 35:22Speaker 3: still has the state basketball tournament, it still has the
- 35:25Speaker 3: football championships, and South Charleston's got softball and you know,
- 35:29Speaker 3: all these other things going on. So you know, it's
- 35:32Speaker 3: hats off to Mayor Ferrell and the folks at Marshall
- 35:35Speaker 3: University for being able to pull off the move of
- 35:37Speaker 3: the state baseball tournament and we'll talk to the Huntington
- 35:40Speaker 3: mayor about that on the show today. Chris Lawrence is
- 35:43Speaker 3: in for the vacation. Jeff Jenkins will get us caught
- 35:45Speaker 3: up on the news and we'll revisit, maybe maybe for

- 35:55Speaker 3: was made yesterday that Jimmy Kimmel is returning to the

- 36:28Speaker 3: owner of Metro News. I say that tongue in cheek
- 36:32Speaker 3: because he's not the owner of Metro News. Yesterday last
- 36:36Speaker 3: night on social medium I got to learn to just
- 36:39Speaker 3: start it off. But last night I was reading some
- 36:41Speaker 3: of the comments. TJ Meadows, who's going to join us
- 36:43Speaker 3: little bit later on, had done a commentary, and in
- 36:46Speaker 3: the commentary somebody took issue with TJ and made a
- 36:51Speaker 3: comment about something to the effect of Metro News being
- 36:57Speaker 3: owned by left wing liberal so on so and that
- 37:02Speaker 3: Ben Selango was the owner of Metro News. I'm here
- 37:05Speaker 3: to assure you that mister Solango is not the owner
- 37:09Speaker 3: of Metro News. As far as I know, we're all
- 37:11Speaker 3: still working for the same guy we always were working for.
- 37:14Speaker 3: And Ben Selango is not the owner of Metro News
- 37:17Speaker 3: unless unless something happened I didn't know about. I saw
- 37:20Speaker 3: it last night and I screenshot it, texted to mister
- 37:23Speaker 3: Silango and I said, should we call you boss now?
- 37:26Speaker 3: And then he promised me a raise. But Ben Selango

- 38:01Speaker 3: The way they looked against the Bears though, I mean,
- 38:05Speaker 3: they made mister Williams look like a MVP. And now

- 38:58Speaker 3: Last night, the Canawa County Board of Education met and
- 39:01Speaker 3: a new board member was elected to replace Tracy White,
- 39:04Speaker 3: who resigned from the board last week. Michael Arbergast was
- 39:07Speaker 3: announced last night. After the meeting, they went into executive

- 39:15Speaker 3: at at GW last night. Michael Arbagass is the new
- 39:18Speaker 3: board member, replacing Tracy White again who resigned last week.
- 39:22Speaker 3: And mister Arbgas has done a whole lot with the

- 39:44Speaker 3: future show. Let me see. Tex says really sick of
- 39:51Speaker 3: hearing how extreme the far right conservatives have become. Looking

- 41:28Speaker 3: text you're saying. I'll do a little research on that,
- 41:30Speaker 3: but appreciate, appreciate the text. And you know, as I
- 41:35Speaker 3: get older and people talk about social Security, and I
- 41:39Speaker 3: have my concerns about social Security. I've been told by
- 41:41Speaker 3: several people that someone of my age shouldn't necessarily be
- 41:45Speaker 3: worried about it, but it should be maybe future generations.
- 41:49Speaker 3: But look from I started paying into Social Security when
- 41:53Speaker 3: I was seventeen years old. Okay. I never once, never,
- 41:58Speaker 3: once thought social Security to be there, and I'm still
- 42:01Speaker 3: not so sure it will be when I retire. Although
- 42:05Speaker 3: to be honest with you, I don't see me ever retiring.
- 42:08Speaker 3: I mean, I talk. They pay me to set behind
- 42:11Speaker 3: this microphone and talk. I mean, I'm not digging ditches here, okay,

- 42:57Speaker 3: got a big enough brand he could probably not come back,
- 43:00Speaker 3: but get late yesterday, Uh, the announcement was made that
- 43:03Speaker 3: Jimmy Kimmel is returning to the airways. Be interesting. I'd
- 43:08Speaker 3: like to know what his ratings are going to be
- 43:09Speaker 3: tonight because a lot of people are going to be
- 43:11Speaker 3: checking out. But again with ratings and the way that
- 43:13Speaker 3: TV and radio works now, people don't always listen live
- 43:16Speaker 3: or watch live. They do it on their schedule, the
- 43:19Speaker 3: show and other programs that we air, you know, are
- 43:23Speaker 3: the same way. Uh. It was announced though that Sinclair,

- 48:23Speaker 3: then I will not see you on the show tomorrow,
- 48:27Speaker 3: just so you know. But yeah, Mike Plant is also
- 48:29Speaker 3: celebrating the birthday today. And I know there's an unwritten
- 48:32Speaker 3: rule in the world of radio, and I suppose maybe
- 48:35Speaker 3: television has this as well, that you're not supposed to
- 48:37Speaker 3: mention quote unquote the other guys. But there is also
- 48:39Speaker 3: a gentleman here in Charleston who is on the radio
- 48:44Speaker 3: on another station. I'll do the Johnny Carson way of
- 48:46Speaker 3: doing things on another network. He's on another station, Kid Conley,
- 48:50Speaker 3: who is celebrating a birthday today as well. He and
- 48:53Speaker 3: I started in radio together at the long since defunct
- 48:59Speaker 3: wlog Logan in nineteen eighty eight. He and I are
- 49:02Speaker 3: born in the same day, in the same year. He
- 49:05Speaker 3: is like two hours older than I am, and so
- 49:08Speaker 3: you can catch him, you know, on another network. But
- 49:10Speaker 3: I wanted to throw it out there that he's also
- 49:12Speaker 3: celebrating their birthday Today's well, and he'll always always be
- 49:16Speaker 3: two hours or so older than I am. Texas, these
- 49:21Speaker 3: Republicans winding about liberal ownership of news outlets don't care
- 49:24Speaker 3: about biased reporting. They are allergic to truth, facts and
- 49:26Speaker 3: objective reporting. Hence they only believe Republican news sources Fox OA,
- 49:30Speaker 3: in Newsmax and alt right podcast anything that confronts the
- 49:34Speaker 3: Republican viewers distorted reality and hurts their feelings. It's fake
- 49:38Speaker 3: or biased. Republicans have no honor or integrity, says a
- 49:42Speaker 3: Texture Texas. Allegedly, Sinclair isn't aerin Kimmel because he won't
- 49:46Speaker 3: apologize to give money to Kirk's wife extortion anyone. I
- 49:49Speaker 3: don't know that that is that that is the case.
- 49:53Speaker 3: I did read an article last night where as part
- 49:56Speaker 3: of the negotiations that someone suggested that Jimmy Kimmel would
- 50:05Speaker 3: apologize and make a donation to the family or the
- 50:08Speaker 3: cause or whatever. I don't know, we'll find out. I mean,
- 50:10Speaker 3: I won't be watching. I mean I may record it,
- 50:13Speaker 3: but by the time look, by the way the new
- 50:15Speaker 3: cycle works now, by the time I get up in
- 50:17Speaker 3: the morning, I get up around five or so, by
- 50:19Speaker 3: the time I get up, I will already know what
- 50:21Speaker 3: he said without even watching it. So you know, that's
- 50:24Speaker 3: just kind of kind of kind of where we are now.
- 50:27Speaker 3: But Dave Island showing five eighty Live is brought to
- 50:29Speaker 3: you part by the All New Generations Ford of Hurricane
- 50:31Speaker 3: Visit Generations Forward dot Com tex says leftist go insane
- 50:36Speaker 3: over Kimmel's words, getting him canceled for a short time
- 50:39Speaker 3: forgetting they still have a lot of nasty hosts on
- 50:42Speaker 3: television Seth Meyers, John Oliver, John Stewart, the Coven of
- 50:45Speaker 3: Witches on the View, and yet Greg Gutfield still kicks
- 50:49Speaker 3: all their dufts in the ratios. Hmmm, wonder why, says
- 50:53Speaker 3: the textra You know, and I am not a big
- 50:55Speaker 3: viewer of the View. I mean, number one, I'm working
- 50:57Speaker 3: at that time of day and just nearly out my
- 51:00Speaker 3: thing I was I was told and actually Bill Maher
- 51:05Speaker 3: made reference to it that the View did not mention
- 51:10Speaker 3: the entire Jimmy Kimble thing. They've they've weighed in on
- 51:14Speaker 3: everything else, but there's something about the old saying of
- 51:17Speaker 3: biting the hand that feeds you. I was told that
- 51:20Speaker 3: I could be wrong. I was told. And Bill Maher
- 51:22Speaker 3: also said it on his show last week that they
- 51:25Speaker 3: did not mention the whole Jimmy Kimmel thing, which that's
- 51:28Speaker 3: ad a little hypocritical. I mean to be honest with you,
- 51:31Speaker 3: if you want my honest opinion about that. Kirk news
- 51:39Speaker 3: is Old's is a texture. Kimball news is Old, trump
- 51:42Speaker 3: is Old released the Epstein files, says a texture. I
- 51:45Speaker 3: want to say, just real quickly though, thank you to
- 51:49Speaker 3: everybody who has reached out and told me happy birthday today.
- 51:53Speaker 3: You know, I was born when I was very young
- 51:56Speaker 3: at Fort Benning, Georgia, fifty five years ago, officially eight
- 52:00Speaker 3: seventeen am from one. I'm told I don't remember much
- 52:02Speaker 3: about that day, but that's what I was told. My
- 52:06Speaker 3: dad was finishing up his stint in the army. Last
- 52:08Speaker 3: stop was Fort Benning, and that's where I was born
- 52:12Speaker 3: did and then we came back to West Virginia, which
- 52:15Speaker 3: is where my parents are both from, in nineteen seventy
- 52:18Speaker 3: one and been here ever since. I will say this,
- 52:22Speaker 3: I am an incredibly blessed guy. As I said earlier
- 52:26Speaker 3: in the show, fifty five years old, I am in
- 52:31Speaker 3: great health. I mean, despite the fact that I you know,
- 52:34Speaker 3: it looks like I'm carrying around of basketball sometimes, but
- 52:37Speaker 3: I am in good health. My doctor says I'm a
- 52:41Speaker 3: freak of nature because he can't quite figure it out.
- 52:44Speaker 3: Millie Snyder says the same thing. I gonna have her
- 52:46Speaker 3: on the show as well. But I am very very blessed.
- 52:50Speaker 3: I have a job that I absolutely love with a
- 52:53Speaker 3: company that I absolutely love. I got great coworkers. I
- 52:56Speaker 3: got a great wife of thirty three years affected of
- 53:00Speaker 3: last year. Uh, and I'm last week. I'm sorry last week.
- 53:04Speaker 3: And I hope to continue to be doing this for
- 53:07Speaker 3: a long, long long time because I don't plan on
- 53:11Speaker 3: every retiring. All Right, gotta go, I'll see you later's
- 53:15Speaker 3: day on Metro News midday. Till then, have fun and
- 53:19Speaker 3: love Somebodysambe.
- 53:36Speaker 2: Six point five, Don Charleston one oh four point five
- 53:38Speaker 2: Cross Lanes, WVRC Media Station.
- 53:42Speaker 3: We are proud to live here too,
