- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart podcasts.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Great to have you with us here an NHL Unscripted
- 0:23Speaker 1: episode number ninety four. Can you believe we're just barreling
- 0:27Speaker 1: towards episode number one hundred syndication. It's fantastic, you know,
- 0:30Speaker 1: it's a good time in the summer.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Talk about lists.
- 0:32Speaker 1: NHL dot Com throwing at a list of the best defenseman,
- 0:35Speaker 1: best wingers.
- 0:35Speaker 2: So we'll go over that.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Tremendous guest this week, Ben Klimber, a terrific career of
- 0:39Speaker 1: the Tampa Bay Lightning, Washington Capitals, among others, now.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Doing worth Minnesota Wild.
- 0:43Speaker 1: He's got stories for days about Alexandro Vetchkin, Bruce Boudreau,
- 0:46Speaker 1: John Torrella. Absolutely fantastic, and of course we'll talk with
- 0:49Speaker 1: the NHL News, which is a little bit lean right now.
- 0:52Speaker 2: JD.
- 0:52Speaker 1: So hope everyone's enjoying their summer. To me, summer's albout
- 0:55Speaker 1: baseball barbecues in the beach. You're in Arizona, though, so
- 0:57Speaker 1: no beach there for you. You're not hitting the beach
- 1:00Speaker 1: like tal Or Natives on the West Coast or like
- 1:01Speaker 1: me at the Jersey Shore.
- 1:02Speaker 2: But you're doing a lot of DIY work. Now, how
- 1:04Speaker 2: is that going?
- 1:05Speaker 3: See, I'm just sweating my bag off doing a home
- 1:07Speaker 3: remodel in a hundred and twenty degree heat, just full
- 1:11Speaker 3: tit sweat. Just I told my wife the other day,
- 1:16Speaker 3: I'm like, you've you fucking made me get into this
- 1:19Speaker 3: keeping it tight.
- 1:20Speaker 4: I was like, We're never doing this again. Never. I'm like,
- 1:24Speaker 4: waiting on, I'm waiting on.
- 1:25Speaker 3: We're waiting on exterior doors right now, so we're almost there.
- 1:29Speaker 3: I I get to watch exterior doors get shipped from
- 1:32Speaker 3: Florida and just stop every two hours and just oh.
- 1:36Speaker 4: But it's been good. It's been good.
- 1:38Speaker 3: I've I've been busy watching the hockey news lack thereof
- 1:43Speaker 3: watching UFC big UFC fans, So I've been enjoying jiu
- 1:47Speaker 3: jitsu is gee, but I've been enjoying the enjoying everything
- 1:54Speaker 3: the UFC has to offer. Dana White Contender series just
- 1:57Speaker 3: started on Tuesday, so again any UFC fans. But it's
- 2:01Speaker 3: been good. How we're uh, are you at the network still? Yeah?
- 2:09Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 2:09Speaker 1: Doing baseball right now. It's we're still based with baseball
- 2:11Speaker 1: four days a week. But speaking of UFC, I was
- 2:13Speaker 1: talking to my cousin the other day as they kick
- 2:14Speaker 1: at to Nate. He was telling me, He's like, you know,
- 2:16Speaker 1: did you watch the White House event? I said, no,
- 2:17Speaker 1: watch UFC is not my thing, but I have a
- 2:19Speaker 1: lot of friends because I'm telling you, dude, this White
- 2:20Speaker 1: House event, it was the greatest specta of all times.
- 2:23Speaker 2: I know you're a UFC guy.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Asking the UFC fans, he goes, they had such a
- 2:27Speaker 1: high barrel, Nate, and he goes, they plowed through it.
- 2:30Speaker 1: I said, but Dana said, I'll never do it again.
- 2:31Speaker 1: He said, well, yeah, like it must have cost so much.
- 2:33Speaker 1: He was, like, the expenditure they put into this thing,
- 2:35Speaker 1: like it was also you guys fite fans. He said,
- 2:38Speaker 1: they alast thirty million, Ate, But do you think it's
- 2:40Speaker 1: worth it just to be able to pull it off
- 2:41Speaker 1: and see you were there at the White House?
- 2:43Speaker 5: Absolutely it's worth it. That was That was one of
- 2:45Speaker 5: the coolest things I've ever watched. I mean, just like
- 2:47Speaker 5: when they did it at the Sphere And Dana said
- 2:49Speaker 5: the same thing after the Sphere too. He said, I'll
- 2:51Speaker 5: never do it at the Sphere again, just because it
- 2:53Speaker 5: costs so much. But I mean, I think the spectacle
- 2:55Speaker 5: of it and like watching them do the walkouts and
- 2:58Speaker 5: then walking through the White House and the Oval Office
- 3:00Speaker 5: and all the important rooms like that was that was incredible,
- 3:03Speaker 5: like that'll never happen again. And on top of that,
- 3:05Speaker 5: the fights were incredible, and then the main the main
- 3:08Speaker 5: card was incredible too. So it uh, it didn't disappoint,
- 3:12Speaker 5: that's for sure. So I think I think Dane's got
- 3:14Speaker 5: to keep doing that, keep doing some cool locations I
- 3:17Speaker 5: think would be great.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Which was the fight.
- 3:19Speaker 1: My cousin said, there's one fight like the doctor said,
- 3:21Speaker 1: that's it, it's over.
- 3:22Speaker 2: And then because no, he like, because I've never seen it.
- 3:25Speaker 2: But the guy ru.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Tell me what that the way he just the way
- 3:29Speaker 1: he described it, be like, you know, Russell Westbrook could
- 3:31Speaker 1: just for talking. Russell Westbrook leaves the NBA game, and
- 3:34Speaker 1: the you know, the trainers like no, he can't go back,
- 3:36Speaker 1: and all a sudden, like willis sweet, he comes limping out,
- 3:38Speaker 1: explaining to me what happened.
- 3:39Speaker 3: He quit on the stool, but his face was pulverized.
- 3:42Speaker 3: He put his face into a meat grinder. He's he
- 3:45Speaker 3: was he's a Spanish fighter and by the end he
- 3:48Speaker 3: looked Asian.
- 3:53Speaker 4: But like a warrior.
- 3:57Speaker 2: He hung in there like yeah he.
- 3:59Speaker 3: Took Yeah, he sat his eye like he when they
- 4:02Speaker 3: say like I'm gonna pump your eyes shut. Yeah, yeah,
- 4:04Speaker 3: Like that's what happened, Like he pumped his eyes. She
- 4:07Speaker 3: broke his orbital bone.
- 4:08Speaker 4: Everything.
- 4:09Speaker 5: I mean, he was he underestimated Gechie big time, Like
- 4:12Speaker 5: he underestimated tried to go toto toe with him. He
- 4:14Speaker 5: does this thing the night before where he was basically
- 4:17Speaker 5: celebrating his win, his future win the night before, and
- 4:22Speaker 5: then he ends up going to to toe with Geechee
- 4:23Speaker 5: and has to quit on the stool. So hell of
- 4:26Speaker 5: a fight though.
- 4:27Speaker 3: You gotta go watch, go watch all the Ian Gary
- 4:29Speaker 3: stuff though, because in this shit coming out right now
- 4:32Speaker 3: is crazy. There's a fight this weekend. Ian Gary is
- 4:35Speaker 3: on Makachev his wife. His wife wrote a book on
- 4:41Speaker 3: how to be a wag before she met him. She's
- 4:43Speaker 3: like fourteen years older than him. Her ex husband is
- 4:48Speaker 3: his nutrition coach now and lives at the house with them.
- 4:52Speaker 4: The weirdest shit you've ever heard in your life.
- 4:54Speaker 3: So if anybody wants a good read, go look up
- 4:56Speaker 3: Ian Gary if you like that reality TV stuff that's awful.
- 4:59Speaker 2: Her ex husband is his fitness coach currently.
- 5:03Speaker 4: His nutrition coach at the house with them.
- 5:06Speaker 3: He just comes back boxers. I've had that before. They
- 5:10Speaker 3: had a ship, they had a kid together.
- 5:13Speaker 4: They're all living under one room.
- 5:15Speaker 2: I didn't know that.
- 5:15Speaker 4: I didn't know that. Oh yeah, go look it up, buddy.
- 5:17Speaker 4: It's insane.
- 5:18Speaker 3: I guess he's a good nutritional funny. She wrote a book,
- 5:22Speaker 3: eleven page book on how to.
- 5:23Speaker 4: Be a wag.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Eleven page book.
- 5:26Speaker 5: It's a pretty slim volume.
- 5:27Speaker 4: Well, it's like a pamphlet.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Guidelines, very long, hard lines, guideline. That's good stuff. All right,
- 5:36Speaker 2: to the hockey we go.
- 5:36Speaker 1: After losing it to the Yanks and just about every
- 5:38Speaker 1: international tournament in the pasture at, Canada rolled over the
- 5:41Speaker 1: Americans eight one last week in the gold medal game,
- 5:44Speaker 1: the Helnka Gretzky kept showcasing the best under eighteen players
- 5:47Speaker 1: in the world. A few stand up performances for Canada
- 5:50Speaker 1: in this game, starting with the defenseman Landon DuPaul, who
- 5:52Speaker 1: had four assists in the game.
- 5:54Speaker 2: The first many discussions would be having.
- 5:55Speaker 1: About DUPONMP but he's presumed to be the top pick
- 5:58Speaker 1: JD the twenty twenty seven draft and playing on a
- 6:00Speaker 1: stacked University of Michigan squad this season.
- 6:04Speaker 4: Uh yeah they were.
- 6:05Speaker 3: Listen, that team was was very good, a little bit
- 6:09Speaker 3: of old school hockey. They played tough, they had some depth.
- 6:16Speaker 3: Landon DuPont, I think is he's a he's a he's
- 6:21Speaker 3: he's the real deal. He's I think he's as advertised.
- 6:24Speaker 3: I don't think he's a generational guy. But he's very good,
- 6:28Speaker 3: great shot, good skater, competes hard.
- 6:30Speaker 4: I think I think, uh, it's it's gonna be. It's good.
- 6:35Speaker 4: He's he's worth it, and I think it was.
- 6:37Speaker 3: It was nice to get the HOLNCA Cup, get something
- 6:40Speaker 3: for the Canadians and in that fashion beating the dirty Yanks.
- 6:43Speaker 3: But yeah, it was, it was good. This is gonna
- 6:46Speaker 3: be an interesting, interesting draft year. I think there's a
- 6:50Speaker 3: lot of teams that are going to early on this
- 6:51Speaker 3: season might kick the can down the road and try
- 6:54Speaker 3: to get him because he's, uh, he's worth it and
- 6:58Speaker 3: he's a good pillar to have as a defenseman back there.
- 7:01Speaker 5: From what I've heard in that birth year talking to
- 7:03Speaker 5: some guys like that nine birth year, especially for Team
- 7:06Speaker 5: Canada is like crazy strong, like some really good players
- 7:09Speaker 5: coming and Canada's will be coming back again and you know,
- 7:13Speaker 5: I got to watch Land and DuPont a couple of
- 7:16Speaker 5: years ago when I was covering the WHL finals and
- 7:19Speaker 5: watching a little bit before and when they were playing. Uh,
- 7:22Speaker 5: when he played, he plays for Everett, and he jumped
- 7:25Speaker 5: out right away and he was only sixteen at the time,
- 7:28Speaker 5: and he was, you know, he looked like an elite
- 7:30Speaker 5: player out there. So you're right. I mean he's got
- 7:32Speaker 5: something and he's got a lot of ability. And right
- 7:35Speaker 5: right shot, right right shot.
- 7:38Speaker 4: Shot there.
- 7:38Speaker 5: It is like that were hey, we were we were
- 7:41Speaker 5: in sync right there, right shot. Yeah, he doesn't jump
- 7:44Speaker 5: on that. I'm taking right shot, which is which is nice.
- 7:48Speaker 5: Every GM wants that.
- 7:50Speaker 2: So that's good news there.
- 7:51Speaker 1: As far as the future, speaking of future players, there
- 7:53Speaker 1: could be stars already. Talk about the eighth over ball
- 7:55Speaker 1: pick Vigo b York could make the Jets, which will
- 7:58Speaker 1: potentially give them the second line center they've been lacking
- 8:00Speaker 1: for a while. Magnus Hablet, the head coach of the
- 8:03Speaker 1: Swedish national junior team that one goal of Byorke, told
- 8:05Speaker 1: me to recently he wouldn't be surprised to see this
- 8:08Speaker 1: young forward stick with the Jets. Winnipeg needs a rebound
- 8:11Speaker 1: Nate from a brutal season. We know we've talked about
- 8:13Speaker 1: the past and the podcast. Could they trade Connor Hallibuck?
- 8:16Speaker 2: Maybe for now?
- 8:16Speaker 1: Hellibuck stays, they try one more kick of the can.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Do you think Buyork could be the answer for this team?
- 8:20Speaker 1: And do you see Winnipeg rebounding and being a playoff
- 8:22Speaker 1: team again?
- 8:24Speaker 5: I don't. I don't see them rebounding to be a
- 8:26Speaker 5: playoff team. And I think it's a lot to do
- 8:28Speaker 5: with this Connor Hellibuck situation and what's looming with that
- 8:31Speaker 5: and what's been talked about. And they you know, they
- 8:33Speaker 5: go out and they sign Stuart Skinner and everyone kind
- 8:36Speaker 5: of scratches their head at that too, knowing that Hellibuck
- 8:39Speaker 5: could be on the move. And I get the the
- 8:42Speaker 5: Vigo Byork situation, but I don't think he's you know,
- 8:44Speaker 5: he's not the answer at your second line center. And
- 8:47Speaker 5: there has been instances where, you know, guys have come
- 8:49Speaker 5: in and people talk about him and his I Hockey
- 8:51Speaker 5: IQ and how well he's going to adapt to the
- 8:55Speaker 5: pro game, the NHL, And there's been instances guys like
- 8:58Speaker 5: you know, Ryan O'Reilly even you know, I'm not gonna
- 9:00Speaker 5: compare but Patrice Berger on these guys that came in
- 9:02Speaker 5: at eighteen nineteen, they weren't even the first round pick
- 9:04Speaker 5: and made an impact. So I don't think he's going
- 9:07Speaker 5: to be the answer. Do I think his possibility make
- 9:10Speaker 5: the team, But I don't know if a guy can
- 9:12Speaker 5: come in just getting drafted.
- 9:15Speaker 4: We'll see.
- 9:15Speaker 5: Obviously it's possible, but I wouldn't put all my eggs
- 9:18Speaker 5: in one basket if I'm in Winnipick Jets thinking that
- 9:20Speaker 5: he's going to be the answer.
- 9:23Speaker 4: Uh. Yeah.
- 9:24Speaker 3: I slightly pushed back on that because I watched him.
- 9:28Speaker 3: I have to do some breakdown stuff. I was doing
- 9:30Speaker 3: some of Evar Stenberg. I think he's one of the
- 9:33Speaker 3: I think he is probably one of two or three
- 9:38Speaker 3: guys that are the most underrated guys in that first round.
- 9:41Speaker 3: I think he's like a trocheck bradon point hybrid. I
- 9:46Speaker 3: think he shuts down top lines, can play a little
- 9:49Speaker 3: power play. I think he's and he's quick. I think
- 9:52Speaker 3: he's going to make an impact. I think he plays
- 9:54Speaker 3: one hundred percent this year. I think they need him,
- 9:57Speaker 3: and I think they drafted thinking he's playing this year,
- 10:01Speaker 3: and I think it would be it would be huge
- 10:03Speaker 3: if it does. Listen, I just kind of messing around
- 10:07Speaker 3: on Twitter and doing these like too early to call
- 10:09Speaker 3: Central Division rankings of like if we were to rank
- 10:12Speaker 3: the divisions, where would I have Winnipeg And it's like
- 10:16Speaker 3: I had them low because the Central is absolute gauntlet
- 10:20Speaker 3: and I still think they finished bottom too, but I
- 10:23Speaker 3: don't know. They still have a lot of good pieces
- 10:26Speaker 3: and what they wanted Jonathan Taves to be just didn't
- 10:29Speaker 3: work out. But if a lot of those guys bounce
- 10:31Speaker 3: back at Cole Profetti didn't have a good year, if
- 10:34Speaker 3: he can bounce back, if their decore can bounce back.
- 10:36Speaker 4: Helly's healthy.
- 10:38Speaker 3: I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if we see them
- 10:40Speaker 3: have a bounce back here and Vigo is a catalyst
- 10:43Speaker 3: to that and they end up, you know, kind of
- 10:46Speaker 3: hanging around that fourth spot, battle for a wild card
- 10:50Speaker 3: spot because they think I can probably all but guarantee
- 10:54Speaker 3: that there's going to be what is it five Central
- 10:57Speaker 3: teams in the playoffs again, I think it's going to
- 11:00Speaker 3: be three Pacific, five Central. So if I'm in the Central,
- 11:03Speaker 3: I'm like, I just got to get that spot because
- 11:05Speaker 3: I can't see a team in the in the Pacific
- 11:08Speaker 3: other than those first three that are gonna do piss
- 11:11Speaker 3: a drop.
- 11:12Speaker 1: The good news to the Jets they do have top
- 11:13Speaker 1: pen talent with Kyle Connor, Mark Stiffley, Josh Morrissey. So
- 11:16Speaker 1: if hell Buck does stay and if he's committed to
- 11:18Speaker 1: the team, then perhaps there is a way that they
- 11:20Speaker 1: do get back to the playoffs. Speaking teams that kind
- 11:23Speaker 1: of just you know, need kind of a facelifts in
- 11:25Speaker 1: some ways. LA Kings didn't waste any time honoring the
- 11:27Speaker 1: recent retired captain, a Copitar. They announced the other day
- 11:31Speaker 1: the retire Kobe's number eleven February twenty fourth against the Habs.
- 11:34Speaker 1: They'll also unveiled bronze statue of Copatar outside Crypto dot Com.
- 11:38Speaker 1: So that's gonna be the fifteenth statue Nate outside the arena.
- 11:41Speaker 1: They're Kobe Bryant's statues. Also, think about that, I know
- 11:45Speaker 1: that much. That's a lotifting that Crypto. For comparison, the
- 11:49Speaker 1: Rogers Center finally got one, Joe Carter finally got a
- 11:51Speaker 1: statue now in Toronto's the Blue Jays fans canna appreciate
- 11:54Speaker 1: that fifteen and l and I know it's a lot
- 11:56Speaker 1: of I know it's a lot of Lakers love, and
- 11:57Speaker 1: I get that chick Hearn's got a statue, But fifteen, Nate, I.
- 12:01Speaker 6: Mean, will be number fifteen and it is a new Kobe.
- 12:08Speaker 2: Quick has to get one.
- 12:09Speaker 5: That's where it stops. I think that's where it stops.
- 12:11Speaker 5: Those two is Quickie and Dewey, and then it stops.
- 12:13Speaker 5: But I think statues and were good. Yeah, I mean,
- 12:16Speaker 5: hang on, hang on a minute, Nate.
- 12:17Speaker 3: If you hang out, hang around l A long enough,
- 12:19Speaker 3: you're gonna get a im.
- 12:23Speaker 2: That just don't go think.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Magic Johnson, Nate Thompson, Thoms.
- 12:31Speaker 7: Hold the mic, hang a long.
- 12:35Speaker 3: You never know. Now they're handing out. They got a
- 12:38Speaker 3: lot of bronze hanging around there. Hey yeah, ot of
- 12:40Speaker 3: precious metals in l A.
- 12:45Speaker 4: That's crazy, it is.
- 12:46Speaker 5: I did not know it was that many. But I
- 12:48Speaker 5: think that because you know, Dustin Brown has one. He's
- 12:52Speaker 5: on there, so I think Kope has to be there,
- 12:55Speaker 5: Quickie's got to be there and then do it. I
- 12:57Speaker 5: think it stops at Dowdy. It has to after that.
- 12:59Speaker 5: I mean, that's just those are the core guys obviously
- 13:02Speaker 5: got him in the cup. They're Hall of famers minus
- 13:04Speaker 5: Dustin Brown, but all the other guys are Hall of Famers,
- 13:06Speaker 5: so I think it's okay. I'm okay with it because
- 13:09Speaker 5: it's copy. I mean, he's arguably the best king of
- 13:12Speaker 5: all time.
- 13:12Speaker 3: So Trevor Lewis, I love you, Sorry, Adrian, Trevor Lewis.
- 13:20Speaker 5: Can you look up?
- 13:21Speaker 1: The most story franchise in hockey is the Ones? Now again,
- 13:25Speaker 1: I know a lot of these are Lakers statues as well,
- 13:27Speaker 1: but can you look up how these statues are outside
- 13:29Speaker 1: the forum? I know that that's it for are you kids?
- 13:33Speaker 1: This is the most storied France? Who are the four
- 13:35Speaker 1: Rocket Raschard, Bellevo, who else?
- 13:38Speaker 4: And Jeffrion might be the fourth.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Statue?
- 13:44Speaker 6: No, No Dryden, no Patrick Wall I mean they have
- 13:47Speaker 6: a few other guys they could put out there. I
- 13:49Speaker 6: was gonna because I was gonna make the baseball reference.
- 13:51Speaker 6: The only building I can think of that comes close
- 13:53Speaker 6: to crypto is the the Cardinals building in Saint Louis.
- 13:56Speaker 6: They got a ton of them out there. But that's
- 13:58Speaker 6: that's a historic franchise. I mean, I don't have a
- 14:01Speaker 6: problem with it, But what do you think about that one?
- 14:03Speaker 6: A V I mean, that's a with a lot.
- 14:05Speaker 2: Again rich history for me.
- 14:06Speaker 1: Yeah, Saint Louis been listening Cardinals of the second winning
- 14:09Speaker 1: his franchise all the time.
- 14:10Speaker 2: In terms of World Series, if we're.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Looking at you know, Bob Gibson or whatever stars they have,
- 14:14Speaker 1: and they're deserving of it. I just think it's interesting
- 14:16Speaker 1: with La. Like Nate said, it's basketball and hockey.
- 14:19Speaker 4: If it was hockey for the Yankees.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Yankees, well, they've got monument parks. You go to your
- 14:23Speaker 1: own section there in Yankee team. They've got all the statues,
- 14:26Speaker 1: but nothing like outside the way that Elliet of those
- 14:28Speaker 1: other stadiums have, I mean probably the history at very.
- 14:30Speaker 2: Least they also last.
- 14:32Speaker 4: They wouldn't last, and it wouldn't last to New York
- 14:34Speaker 4: out there chance.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Oh captain, my captain. Little less than two months away
- 14:39Speaker 1: from the opening of the season. Ten NHL teams currently
- 14:41Speaker 1: without a captain, so a lot of players that you
- 14:44Speaker 1: could see getting the sea. But my question you JD,
- 14:46Speaker 1: is this specifically these teams like the Blackhawks. You go, Okay,
- 14:49Speaker 1: connor by Dart, your Sharks, Macklin, Celebrini, how soon is
- 14:53Speaker 1: too soon to put those guys, specifically those young stars
- 14:55Speaker 1: and give them Islanders Shaffer. They don't want captain yet
- 14:58Speaker 1: how soon do you give them a sea or do
- 15:00Speaker 1: you give it more to a veteran player's been there
- 15:02Speaker 1: for a long time Autawa centers, you could say maybe
- 15:04Speaker 1: two Stutsla.
- 15:05Speaker 2: How do you equate that?
- 15:06Speaker 4: Uh?
- 15:07Speaker 3: I mean Columbus. I think you probably slide to Orensky.
- 15:11Speaker 3: I think they'll clean it up and give it to Orensky.
- 15:13Speaker 3: San Jose's Macklin. They're going to probably announce it on
- 15:15Speaker 3: media day. I can't imagine they wouldn't. Theyre probably gonna
- 15:17Speaker 3: make a spectacle of it. Uh, Chicago's got to be
- 15:20Speaker 3: Bigard whenever he's healthy and back. You maybe give it
- 15:23Speaker 3: to Kaner for one year, like I don't know, maybe
- 15:27Speaker 3: he'll probably be an assistant.
- 15:29Speaker 4: You know.
- 15:29Speaker 3: You look at Boston, it's got to be Pasta. Got
- 15:32Speaker 3: to give it to Pasta. He's he deserves it.
- 15:35Speaker 4: What ell? What do you got la Quintin Byfield? No,
- 15:39Speaker 4: La doubts for one more year and then after that. Yeah,
- 15:44Speaker 4: Dowdy to camp. I think it's easy saying would you
- 15:45Speaker 4: give Islanders?
- 15:48Speaker 3: Yeah, probably i'd maybe I'm trying to think, yeah, I'd
- 15:53Speaker 3: probably give it to him other than if not him
- 15:55Speaker 3: bo Horvat, but I'd probably give it to Shaeffer, just
- 15:58Speaker 3: to it's gonna go to him eventually.
- 16:01Speaker 4: They might wait one more year.
- 16:02Speaker 3: Vancouver, she's put that franchise to the moon, right they cover.
- 16:07Speaker 2: There's no clear.
- 16:10Speaker 4: Philiparonic give and that's.
- 16:15Speaker 5: I mean Anaheim. I'm thinking l Calmer, La Calmer, le Leo.
- 16:21Speaker 3: If you're if you're giving probably now if you're giving
- 16:24Speaker 3: Leo eighteen yeah, eighteen. But yeah, I think the biggest
- 16:31Speaker 3: lock in the I mean the one, it's it's one,
- 16:33Speaker 3: I guess. I guess the big question is probably Ottawa too.
- 16:37Speaker 3: Like where you go Jake Sanderson, I would go, I'd
- 16:41Speaker 3: go to Jake.
- 16:42Speaker 5: Yeah, I can't think of anybody else really, unless this.
- 16:46Speaker 3: Might be the age of a lot of demon getting
- 16:48Speaker 3: to see here. You typically i'd go, I'd go Jake
- 16:52Speaker 3: to Snake.
- 16:52Speaker 5: You could argue in Boston to that it would be
- 16:54Speaker 5: maca boy as well. He could be he could be
- 16:57Speaker 5: the captain too. But I agree, I agree with you.
- 17:00Speaker 5: I think Pasta has earned it. I think he's a
- 17:02Speaker 5: he's he's been a captain like for them team last couple.
- 17:05Speaker 3: Of years and who knows how long he you know,
- 17:08Speaker 3: I mean, who knows where that they're going St.
- 17:12Speaker 5: Louis.
- 17:12Speaker 3: He ever wants out Saint Louis would be. I mean,
- 17:16Speaker 3: I have Paraco, maybe getting too old. Robert Thomas, front,
- 17:20Speaker 3: you have Robert Thomas, Bobby Bobby Tommy.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I know Ottaway, JD. You said Sanderson, Can I
- 17:29Speaker 2: sell you on Thomas Schabbot?
- 17:31Speaker 4: No, right, no, Shabby won't know. It's probably.
- 17:36Speaker 2: One more here with Ottawa.
- 17:38Speaker 4: Rue's not in Ottawa anymore.
- 17:42Speaker 5: He's going back. He's going back.
- 17:44Speaker 4: He's going back one more year. Got this fucking I
- 17:47Speaker 4: could see that.
- 17:47Speaker 5: Give it to g for one year and then.
- 17:51Speaker 3: After that, or Drake Bathson, Yeah, the bath Man. But
- 17:57Speaker 3: I like, I like Sanderson, and then Vancouver. I couldn't
- 18:01Speaker 3: tell you somebody on Vancouver.
- 18:03Speaker 2: It'll be Malhotra. They just they just select what.
- 18:08Speaker 3: Give it to Manny. Let Manny just wear it on
- 18:10Speaker 3: his suit. He's our coaching, our captain players, coach.
- 18:15Speaker 4: Get it.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Oh, last topic before we get to benk Climber. Billy
- 18:18Speaker 1: coivin and had two goals, seven points thirty nine NHL
- 18:21Speaker 1: games last season.
- 18:23Speaker 2: As Jason de Murs gives a hardy chuckle.
- 18:24Speaker 1: He split time to the Penguins and their HL club
- 18:27Speaker 1: in Wilkesprace Crayton. So naturally the Penguins had to lock
- 18:30Speaker 1: him up for not one, not two, not five, not six,
- 18:34Speaker 1: not seven, eight.
- 18:35Speaker 2: Years and thirty two million dollars.
- 18:37Speaker 1: The contracts that summer have been historic, starting with the
- 18:39Speaker 1: Leo Carlson offer sheet, the Monster deals for celebrating but
- 18:43Speaker 1: dark but villy, no offense.
- 18:45Speaker 2: The rest of these players, but Jada, this one, this
- 18:47Speaker 2: one blew your head opened.
- 18:48Speaker 1: I mean, as Ben climbers a Joyce one Matari and
- 18:50Speaker 1: say he's never jealous, but these contracts, this is one
- 18:52Speaker 1: which you you felt personally aggrieved. You went right to
- 18:55Speaker 1: the rank in Arizona then said I gotta come back
- 18:57Speaker 1: for one more year.
- 18:58Speaker 3: Historic or hysterical, I says, no, I listened. We're a
- 19:03Speaker 3: players first, you know, we want guys to get paid
- 19:06Speaker 3: players only. But I have to somewhat kind of go.
- 19:11Speaker 3: It's one of those who are like, oh shit, okay,
- 19:15Speaker 3: you know I think there was a couple like I
- 19:18Speaker 3: had to, you know, nothing against him. I had to
- 19:20Speaker 3: look up the Hockey dB yeah and kind of check, like,
- 19:24Speaker 3: you know, he's been around for a little bit.
- 19:26Speaker 4: Did I miss something right?
- 19:27Speaker 2: Maybe he hit a better year that I realized yeah, and.
- 19:29Speaker 3: I was like, oh shit, okay, like they must see
- 19:32Speaker 3: something that I do not see, because that is a
- 19:35Speaker 3: lot of money to commit to somebody on a team
- 19:38Speaker 3: that I was. Again, we I did my too early
- 19:42Speaker 3: to call standings for the Metro. I don't have pit
- 19:45Speaker 3: that high. I have pit at kind of the bottom
- 19:48Speaker 3: right now, just with I don't think they got any
- 19:50Speaker 3: better question marks at the goaltending position and up front.
- 19:54Speaker 4: You know, they didn't really do a ton.
- 19:57Speaker 3: They resigned some young guys, but I don't know with
- 20:01Speaker 3: Philly Coyven and I I a time will tell, I
- 20:05Speaker 3: guess and it's one of those in five years we'll see.
- 20:08Speaker 3: But this is like a pure eng ball written all
- 20:10Speaker 3: over it, where like you're again are you you're kind
- 20:15Speaker 3: of your hand is forced to play this guy now?
- 20:18Speaker 5: Yeah, I was, Yeah, this one is uh, it's it's changed,
- 20:22Speaker 5: and I guess, you know, we look at how gms
- 20:25Speaker 5: are signing guys compared to when we were playing. I'm
- 20:27Speaker 5: not gonna be old timer, but it was you were
- 20:30Speaker 5: paid based on you know, what you what you were doing,
- 20:32Speaker 5: and now it seems like you know, you're you're gonna
- 20:34Speaker 5: be paid on what you what they what we think
- 20:36Speaker 5: you're going to be able doing. And I was trying
- 20:37Speaker 5: to think of comparisons of guys that in the last
- 20:40Speaker 5: few years that got paid like this without really producing.
- 20:43Speaker 5: I mean, you know Samuelson from Buffalo. I know everyone
- 20:46Speaker 5: scratched their head obviously when he got his deal at
- 20:48Speaker 5: first because he hadn't scored a goal yet, and I
- 20:51Speaker 5: know he's not paid to do that, but it was,
- 20:53Speaker 5: you know, one of those situations where it's like, all right, well,
- 20:55Speaker 5: what are they what do they see? Maybe that's a
- 20:57Speaker 5: bad comparison, but this one is.
- 20:59Speaker 3: Was like Samuelson was like hampered by injuries when he
- 21:02Speaker 3: got it. It wasn't yeah you saw what was that?
- 21:04Speaker 3: And he's got the pedigree cove in.
- 21:06Speaker 5: It's kind of like, yeah, this one is I don't
- 21:09Speaker 5: know if we've ever seen something like this like this,
- 21:11Speaker 5: like this amount of NHL games and he gets paid
- 21:15Speaker 5: for this long. I think this is a first. I
- 21:16Speaker 5: was trying to think about different guys and there's no
- 21:20Speaker 5: comparison to this, and.
- 21:21Speaker 4: Then you can attest to this.
- 21:23Speaker 3: These are one of those signings that if you are
- 21:25Speaker 3: on the desk and this comes up, you are fucking
- 21:29Speaker 3: grasping at straws to try to come up with something
- 21:32Speaker 3: to fill that five minutes. You know what, you've been
- 21:36Speaker 3: there and Nat and and you'll you'll you get there
- 21:39Speaker 3: and somebody's like, we got to talk about this, and
- 21:41Speaker 3: you're like, I got nothing.
- 21:43Speaker 4: I got nothing. There was the only comparison I found
- 21:47Speaker 4: one comparison.
- 21:48Speaker 6: It's Frank Nazar signed a seven year deal after playing
- 21:51Speaker 6: about two dozen games. But that's like, well a top
- 21:53Speaker 6: ten pick, Frank top fifteen pick, which is.
- 21:58Speaker 3: Not listen, I will tell I'm gonna tell, I tell
- 22:02Speaker 3: you what he's going to be. I don't know if
- 22:05Speaker 3: I don't know sometimes if that's doing a disservice to
- 22:07Speaker 3: the player because you put him under the microscope and
- 22:10Speaker 3: the pressure. Yeah, you get that freedom of security, but
- 22:12Speaker 3: you know you're immediately you're immediately judged on it. You know,
- 22:17Speaker 3: you're there's a veil that's just ripped off and you're
- 22:20Speaker 3: not really If he has a bad start, Dan Muse
- 22:23Speaker 3: pulls him into the office. He says, fuck, you got
- 22:26Speaker 3: your contract. Why aren't you working hard? Why aren't you
- 22:29Speaker 3: this and that and that and that. So it's like
- 22:31Speaker 3: everything kind of gets more scrutinized. So it's tough, but
- 22:34Speaker 3: listen to congrats to him. He's rich baby.
- 22:36Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I'm with you guys.
- 22:38Speaker 1: I think it puts pressure on the coach, like now
- 22:39Speaker 1: the pressure's on Big Dick Dan Muse because now they're like.
- 22:43Speaker 2: How can you not play this guy? What do you mean?
- 22:45Speaker 4: Hard to say?
- 22:48Speaker 2: Guilty?
- 22:48Speaker 7: Is charged?
- 22:49Speaker 1: Still to come here in NHL and script, we'll talk
- 22:51Speaker 1: to Ben Climber. He's got stories for days and he's
- 22:53Speaker 1: smart with this money. How should I invest? He's a
- 22:56Speaker 1: financial planner. Maybe he'll tell us and save us all
- 22:58Speaker 1: a bunch of money. Next our next guest draft in
- 23:15Speaker 1: the second round, twenty seventh overall by the Boston Ruins
- 23:18Speaker 1: of the nineteen ninety seven NHL Draft. He went on
- 23:20Speaker 1: to play in four hundred and thirty eight regular season
- 23:22Speaker 1: games the Lightning and Capitals, winning the Stanley Cup with
- 23:25Speaker 1: Tampa Bay in two thousand and four. He could be
- 23:27Speaker 1: seen on television and his native Minnesota covering the wild
- 23:29Speaker 1: University of Minnesota and the fabled Minnesota State High School Tournament.
- 23:33Speaker 1: As if that wasn't enough, he's also a certified financial
- 23:36Speaker 1: planner who needs some advice on their money.
- 23:38Speaker 2: Let's talk to Ben Climber. Hey, Ben, good to see you.
- 23:41Speaker 7: Hey, thanks for having me looking forward to really appreciate.
- 23:44Speaker 2: It, of course our pleasure.
- 23:45Speaker 1: How has this summer been so far? Have you been
- 23:47Speaker 1: keeping track of the contract numbers being thrown out? Speaking
- 23:49Speaker 1: of finances, some of these NHL players getting rich.
- 23:52Speaker 7: Huh, it's a good time to be a player. And
- 23:55Speaker 7: I but I've always cautioned this, like as a player,
- 23:58Speaker 7: you play with some guys and they'd be so bitter
- 24:00Speaker 7: about the way the money is now. I never want
- 24:02Speaker 7: to be that guy. But wow, guys are certainly, you know,
- 24:06Speaker 7: getting paid and good for them.
- 24:09Speaker 3: Ben, I just you know, going into financial planning, was
- 24:13Speaker 3: there something when you were playing that led to you
- 24:16Speaker 3: wanting to do this? Or maybe a moment in time
- 24:20Speaker 3: you with your finances, are seeing some players the way
- 24:22Speaker 3: they handled their money, because you know what it is,
- 24:25Speaker 3: it is a different world and it's a different landscape
- 24:27Speaker 3: in the NHL now, just just in terms of the
- 24:30Speaker 3: monetary money that's coming in. But back then you could
- 24:33Speaker 3: say the market's different. So is there anything any story
- 24:36Speaker 3: that kind of led you to this path.
- 24:40Speaker 7: It's a funny story. And Nate will certainly appreciate this
- 24:43Speaker 7: because you know some of the key characters. I was
- 24:45Speaker 7: super fortunate Brian Lottin was my agent, was just a
- 24:48Speaker 7: tremendous influence in my life and helped me a ton,
- 24:50Speaker 7: and so I wanted I thought I wanted to be
- 24:52Speaker 7: an agent when I was done. So I got done
- 24:54Speaker 7: playing and I sat down with Michael yout who was
- 24:56Speaker 7: running out to God Hockey at the time. I said, Mike,
- 24:58Speaker 7: I want a job. He's like, well, I'm not hiring you.
- 25:00Speaker 7: I'm like, no, no, I'm not like really asking you.
- 25:02Speaker 7: I'm telling you I'm starting. And he's like, you need
- 25:05Speaker 7: to go back to school. He's huge, you know, he
- 25:08Speaker 7: got his law degree. And I respect the heck out
- 25:11Speaker 7: of Mike. And I'm like, okay, Mike, I'll go back.
- 25:13Speaker 7: I get it. And he goes, so, by the way,
- 25:14Speaker 7: you're going to be a terrible agent. I'm like, what
- 25:16Speaker 7: are you talking about. It would be a great agent,
- 25:18Speaker 7: like I learned from Brian and all the things. And
- 25:20Speaker 7: he goes, no, this is why you're going to be
- 25:21Speaker 7: a bad agent. And I'll save that story. But it
- 25:24Speaker 7: is kind of funny. And basically it's like, you need
- 25:26Speaker 7: to have a lot of young kids and now they're
- 25:28Speaker 7: chasing the thirteen year old kids around and that doesn't
- 25:30Speaker 7: sound like a lot of fun. But I was going
- 25:32Speaker 7: back to school at you know, the urging of Mike,
- 25:36Speaker 7: and well, well I was going back to school. I
- 25:38Speaker 7: emailed every GM in the league because after Mike told
- 25:40Speaker 7: me I was going to be a terrible agent, I'm like, well,
- 25:42Speaker 7: maybe I'll be a GM. And I was sitting down
- 25:45Speaker 7: with the guys as they were staying at the Saint Hotel,
- 25:47Speaker 7: have coffee with them, ask about their stories, what they enjoyed,
- 25:51Speaker 7: what they you know, are embarrassed about. Great to hear them,
- 25:54Speaker 7: you know, kind of tell their tale. And as I
- 25:57Speaker 7: was going back to school, I was taking a portfolio
- 26:01Speaker 7: management class and I, in the same process says ted Ley,
- 26:05Speaker 7: osis wrote my letter of admission to get into business school,
- 26:07Speaker 7: which I was super thankful for. And when a guy
- 26:10Speaker 7: like ted Ley Oltsis, who's a billionaire, writes your letter
- 26:13Speaker 7: recognition me, you don't send him a golf sure, right?
- 26:16Speaker 7: And so I did an overview on the Washington Capitals.
- 26:19Speaker 7: There are current players contracts, all the players in hershey
- 26:22Speaker 7: had all their draft picks and said, okay, this year,
- 26:25Speaker 7: this is how you look next year. You're going to
- 26:27Speaker 7: look like this, and the third year going to look
- 26:29Speaker 7: like this. Here's players that are moving out here, players
- 26:31Speaker 7: that are going to work their way up into the
- 26:32Speaker 7: line up here. So I would trade super fun by
- 26:35Speaker 7: the way, to trade people on paper have no consequences.
- 26:38Speaker 7: Oh it was great. And so I was going through
- 26:42Speaker 7: all this process and I sat in the portfolio management
- 26:44Speaker 7: class and instead of looking at the players in the
- 26:46Speaker 7: depth chart, I was looking at asset classes. And I
- 26:49Speaker 7: knew I didn't want to do a lot of moving around.
- 26:51Speaker 7: I'd prefer to just stay in one spot as I
- 26:53Speaker 7: was having a young family. And that was kind of
- 26:56Speaker 7: my AHA moment where I was looking at asset classes
- 26:59Speaker 7: versus players, but using the same kind of part of
- 27:01Speaker 7: my brain that I looked at, you know, through the
- 27:03Speaker 7: hockey line. So that was my moment where I'm like,
- 27:05Speaker 7: you know what, this might be a great fit for
- 27:07Speaker 7: me and got in the business and started rolling from there.
- 27:11Speaker 5: Benny, from that experience and I guess, you know, putting
- 27:14Speaker 5: on your pseudo GM hat, you know, I guess now
- 27:16Speaker 5: with the league and where it's going, and you said,
- 27:19Speaker 5: with the financial landscape, like what do you see like
- 27:22Speaker 5: you put your GM back hat on and what do
- 27:24Speaker 5: you see these contracts, Like, what do you see coming
- 27:26Speaker 5: in near future with some of these guys.
- 27:29Speaker 7: Well, it's so interesting. So when I got in the league,
- 27:32Speaker 7: everyone was you know, waiting and persevering to get to
- 27:35Speaker 7: free agency or unrestricted free agency in your third ever.
- 27:40Speaker 7: And now it's like, oh my god, I just have
- 27:44Speaker 7: one good year and it's like, you know, you're just
- 27:46Speaker 7: ringing the bell. And so that that obviously is a
- 27:50Speaker 7: huge paradigm shift for the league, and they're having to
- 27:54Speaker 7: take you know, bigger and bigger risks. And right now,
- 27:57Speaker 7: with the Soudar cap going up, there's room to make
- 28:00Speaker 7: a few mistakes. However, if it doesn't go up, or
- 28:04Speaker 7: if there is you know, economic turmoil, I think, you know,
- 28:07Speaker 7: there's going to be some teams holding the bag and
- 28:10Speaker 7: some contracts that can't get rid of and that's going
- 28:12Speaker 7: to be a struggle for them. But I mean, right now,
- 28:15Speaker 7: if out of your edge level deal you have a
- 28:17Speaker 7: great third you know season, you're basically looking at you know,
- 28:21Speaker 7: six to you know, seven, eight years almost getting laid
- 28:25Speaker 7: out for you. I think that's different. I don't know
- 28:30Speaker 7: that that's great, but that's the landscape. And kind of
- 28:33Speaker 7: the rules of the game today. As long as the
- 28:35Speaker 7: cap keeps going up, things will work out. If the
- 28:38Speaker 7: cap doesn't go up one year, you are going to
- 28:40Speaker 7: separate the good gms from the play the gms that
- 28:44Speaker 7: are really just you know, making guesses. And I think
- 28:47Speaker 7: that that's something you know that right now is goes
- 28:50Speaker 7: a little bit under the radar. I mean, I think
- 28:52Speaker 7: Bill Garrion in Minnesota's done a great job. But then
- 28:54Speaker 7: I look at Steve Eiserman like people are giving him
- 28:56Speaker 7: a hard time in Detroit, but look at Tampa, like,
- 28:59Speaker 7: make no bones about it, like he set the foundation
- 29:02Speaker 7: for that franchise to move forward. And certainly Julian's done
- 29:05Speaker 7: a great job there, but that has his fingerprints over
- 29:09Speaker 7: it to this day. I think it's interesting that he's getting,
- 29:12Speaker 7: you know, a lot of negative press in Detroit, but
- 29:14Speaker 7: everything that is core to Tampa is basically Steve's doing.
- 29:19Speaker 5: It's a great point.
- 29:20Speaker 1: I want to talk further about Tampa because, as you said, Ben,
- 29:22Speaker 1: when you were there, you know it was not a
- 29:24Speaker 1: model franchise has turned into that, but the team really struggled.
- 29:27Speaker 1: Vincent Lacavalier was the youngest captain of hockey history at nineteen.
- 29:30Speaker 2: What was it like in those early days in Tampa.
- 29:33Speaker 7: Well, I mean, guys, it's funny. You get to the
- 29:37Speaker 7: NHL and you think, like, oh my gosh, the coaches
- 29:40Speaker 7: and everything are going to be great. But we had
- 29:42Speaker 7: Steve Ladzick as a coach. When I walked in, this
- 29:44Speaker 7: guy was wearing a zoot suit. Every night, he was
- 29:47Speaker 7: smoking a cigar. And the six games a year we
- 29:50Speaker 7: would win and I was thinking what and like, what
- 29:53Speaker 7: in the world is going on? You could get tickets
- 29:56Speaker 7: at a gas station for our games. We were so
- 29:57Speaker 7: fricking bad. But then all of a sudden, Tortorella took
- 30:01Speaker 7: over when they fired Lozic, and there was a word,
- 30:06Speaker 7: and a new word came into the the franchise and
- 30:08Speaker 7: it was called accountability. And that was the difference. And
- 30:12Speaker 7: he established accountability. And if you think, I mean the
- 30:15Speaker 7: guys think towards is tough right now, he's like a freaking,
- 30:18Speaker 7: you know, a puppy out there compared to the way
- 30:20Speaker 7: he used to lose his mind on players like and
- 30:23Speaker 7: I won't name these two players, but I've seen him
- 30:26Speaker 7: make two players cry in video session, two players grown
- 30:30Speaker 7: men cry and one of them we traded within the
- 30:35Speaker 7: next three.
- 30:35Speaker 4: Days, who'd you trade him to in in what year?
- 30:39Speaker 4: And then we'll get our We'll get our.
- 30:41Speaker 7: Exactly, exactly exactly.
- 30:44Speaker 3: Give me I mean is that we always have to ask,
- 30:48Speaker 3: like anytime Torderella's name comes up as a group, where like,
- 30:52Speaker 3: what's give me your best Tortorella story that either happened
- 30:54Speaker 3: to you or or you saw. I know, maybe it
- 30:57Speaker 3: could be the video, but I'm sure there's other ones
- 30:59Speaker 3: that were just absolutely incredible the video.
- 31:03Speaker 7: This is how video session goes with torts. Like, first off,
- 31:07Speaker 7: you know, he runs a pretty high practice, up paced,
- 31:10Speaker 7: up tempo, and so at the end he'd be like, okay, guys,
- 31:12Speaker 7: you got fifteen minutes, and then everybody you know, be
- 31:15Speaker 7: in the locker room and be comfortable. We're going to
- 31:17Speaker 7: be there for a while, and so you'd get your
- 31:20Speaker 7: stuff off, you get a you know, water, whatever goe
- 31:22Speaker 7: to be. Sometimes you get a hot pack for your
- 31:24Speaker 7: back because you're going to be there for a while
- 31:25Speaker 7: instead of an ice pack because you don't want to
- 31:28Speaker 7: lock up. So a perfect example, we traded once for
- 31:33Speaker 7: this guy named Za Daniel Seeger and we call him
- 31:35Speaker 7: Bob Seger. Really nice guy, but he had no idea
- 31:38Speaker 7: what he was walking into. He traded Matthew Barnaby for him.
- 31:42Speaker 7: And first video clip comes up and he's sitting right
- 31:44Speaker 7: next to me on the locker room and the puck
- 31:48Speaker 7: goes from like the d up to the wing, hits
- 31:50Speaker 7: him on the tape. He kind of looks in the middle.
- 31:52Speaker 7: He's going to like, you know, sauce it to the
- 31:54Speaker 7: center or whatever. Hit somebody turnover goes the other way,
- 31:57Speaker 7: Borts hits the you know, hits the stop. But he's like, ah,
- 32:01Speaker 7: what were you thinking there? He's like, wow, I got
- 32:02Speaker 7: the pass and I saw whoever going through the middle,
- 32:04Speaker 7: So he's gonna try to sauce it over and do it.
- 32:06Speaker 8: He's like yeah, so like what are you doing? And
- 32:09Speaker 8: he's like that's the same thing again, and Tour's like, okay, yeah,
- 32:13Speaker 8: so what are you doing? And so finally he figures out.
- 32:15Speaker 8: He's like, oh, yeah, I screwed up. I can't make
- 32:18Speaker 8: that play. Next clip, Bob again in the wall turnover,
- 32:22Speaker 8: same deal. Next clip, follow in the wall, turn off,
- 32:25Speaker 8: five clips in a row.
- 32:27Speaker 4: Five. Yes, the whole room.
- 32:30Speaker 7: Is just like it's dark, it's pitch black. He's like
- 32:33Speaker 7: in his chair like this he's gonna you know, doesn't
- 32:35Speaker 7: have any idea what he walked into. But that was
- 32:38Speaker 7: the deal with Tort's like if you had the puck
- 32:41Speaker 7: on the wall, like it had to get out and
- 32:42Speaker 7: he didn't care. How like, yeah, if you can make
- 32:45Speaker 7: the past to Brad Richards and already saying that they're
- 32:47Speaker 7: gonna go do something special, awesome, good on you. But
- 32:50Speaker 7: what you can do is turn it over, Like you
- 32:52Speaker 7: might as well carry that thing in your teeth across
- 32:54Speaker 7: the blue line before you turn that thing over.
- 32:57Speaker 3: I mean, Nate, isn't that the best thing when you're
- 33:01Speaker 3: when the coach, Like sometimes you get some good coaches
- 33:04Speaker 3: will like come grab you before and you're like you're
- 33:06Speaker 3: gonna get it in the meetings. So just like, hey,
- 33:09Speaker 3: just handle like a big boy in like five straight clips.
- 33:12Speaker 3: Oh you got you couldn't be any smaller that room,
- 33:16Speaker 3: that room can't be dark enough height, Oh my god.
- 33:19Speaker 5: He had no clue that was coming. I don't think
- 33:21Speaker 5: Torch was giving him a heads up on that one.
- 33:23Speaker 5: Most likely he had, I mean.
- 33:26Speaker 7: No idea if I like, if anybody would have known,
- 33:28Speaker 7: like somebody would pull him aside and said Hey, dude,
- 33:31Speaker 7: just admit you made a mistake. You have to be better,
- 33:34Speaker 7: et cetera, et cetera, be accountable. But he wasn't ready
- 33:38Speaker 7: for that, nor would anybody be ready for that. But
- 33:41Speaker 7: that's just the way it was.
- 33:43Speaker 4: I love that he called him Bob too.
- 33:46Speaker 7: Hey Bobby, here's like, here's a classic story. So I mean,
- 33:52Speaker 7: we win the Cup, lockout happens. I signed in Washington
- 33:56Speaker 7: and our team is an it's a country club, like
- 34:00Speaker 7: it is a complete country club. So we play in
- 34:03Speaker 7: Tampa and I'm walking by the visitors room and I
- 34:05Speaker 7: see Nolan Pratt, who's my roommate, and I'm like, and
- 34:08Speaker 7: we probably get smoked by Tampa, who don't say we
- 34:11Speaker 7: lose by four, which is maybe have bend six. And
- 34:14Speaker 7: I'm walking by the locker room and I'm like, at
- 34:15Speaker 7: this point in the year, we've already lost enough games
- 34:18Speaker 7: in Washington where I'm like, gosh, you know, being accountable
- 34:22Speaker 7: and you know being stressed out every day is hard,
- 34:26Speaker 7: but if that's the cost of winning, I'll take it.
- 34:30Speaker 7: I walk by the locker room talk to Nolan. He's
- 34:32Speaker 7: just miserable because Torts is pressing on him so hard
- 34:35Speaker 7: every single day, He's like, I would you know, I
- 34:38Speaker 7: want to We'd love to get moved here, get moved there.
- 34:40Speaker 7: And I'm like, hey, buddy, I would drop this bag
- 34:43Speaker 7: and run back into that locker room if I could,
- 34:46Speaker 7: because the team wins. And sure practice is hard and
- 34:50Speaker 7: there's stressed every single day, but success is certainly worth it.
- 34:55Speaker 5: A guy we both played with many Mary Saint Louis,
- 34:58Speaker 5: he obviously raved about towards too. You know, I want
- 35:00Speaker 5: to talk about Marty though. You know you play with
- 35:02Speaker 5: him in his twenties and he kind of took that
- 35:05Speaker 5: next step in his career. Did you think that he
- 35:09Speaker 5: would get into coaching and be ahead coach like he
- 35:12Speaker 5: is now when you played with him.
- 35:14Speaker 7: Well, I mean from a standpoint of like, do I
- 35:17Speaker 7: think that Marty really understood the game to a higher level, Yes,
- 35:20Speaker 7: for sure, But also you look at some guys who
- 35:23Speaker 7: have some great success and like, do they want to
- 35:25Speaker 7: put the work in because there's like they're spending so
- 35:28Speaker 7: much time at the rink these days. That would have
- 35:31Speaker 7: been really the question for me. And in understanding his
- 35:35Speaker 7: family situation and I know his kids were a little
- 35:37Speaker 7: bit older, which allowed him some runway to then get
- 35:41Speaker 7: back into the NHL coaching versus coaching his kid. Yeah,
- 35:46Speaker 7: I'm always a bit surprised and kind of how it
- 35:48Speaker 7: went down. I think was super unique and he was
- 35:51Speaker 7: a kind of off the wall higher at the time.
- 35:55Speaker 7: But as far as his knowledge and his attention to detail,
- 35:59Speaker 7: being a smaller guy like he had to play smart
- 36:01Speaker 7: a lot. Body position mattered for him. His quickness was
- 36:05Speaker 7: his gift, but he certainly had to make up for
- 36:08Speaker 7: some of his size and all the things that I'm
- 36:10Speaker 7: sure he's undressing, you know, through video and probably a
- 36:13Speaker 7: huge advocate for Cole Coffield in particular, who was I
- 36:18Speaker 7: believe I'm already Saint Louis was Cole Coffield's favorite player
- 36:20Speaker 7: growing up, which has to be super cool for him.
- 36:24Speaker 1: Oh you mentioned the fact playing in Washington play with
- 36:26Speaker 1: the Alexander Robatchkin ever always talks to any about his
- 36:28Speaker 1: incredible goal against the Counties No.
- 36:29Speaker 4: Six.
- 36:30Speaker 1: They don't talk enough of about how you got the
- 36:31Speaker 1: winning goal in that game. Do you ever bring that
- 36:34Speaker 1: up to him?
- 36:37Speaker 7: You know, no, you don't. What a what a unique
- 36:43Speaker 7: guy teammate like he is a caricature and even to
- 36:45Speaker 7: this day when you see him, you're like, does anybody
- 36:48Speaker 7: have more fun than the league than that guy. Like
- 36:50Speaker 7: he's always laughed. Now if I had nine hundred goals,
- 36:52Speaker 7: I'd freaking be smiling too, Don't get me wrong, but
- 36:57Speaker 7: he he is, you know, fun to see his success.
- 37:00Speaker 7: I was his roommate in training camp, his first training camp,
- 37:04Speaker 7: and I like knew a little bit about him, but
- 37:06Speaker 7: I didn't know and nobody expected him to be what
- 37:09Speaker 7: he is today. And I remember walking into the hotel
- 37:12Speaker 7: room and this freaking mutant is playing PlayStation of the
- 37:17Speaker 7: Washington Capitals and he's made himself on the team, and
- 37:20Speaker 7: I'm just like, what in the world, Like what did
- 37:23Speaker 7: I do to get this? Like just George McBee pissed
- 37:26Speaker 7: at me, like what this sucks? And he can't really
- 37:31Speaker 7: speak English at the time, but he's very passionate about
- 37:33Speaker 7: wanting to learn English. And I look back on it
- 37:37Speaker 7: makes me laugh, like all the things they'd be like, Oh,
- 37:39Speaker 7: we're gonna go get dinner, and like during training camp,
- 37:42Speaker 7: just get out of the hotel because the hotel is
- 37:44Speaker 7: poisoned in my eyes in training camp because it's just
- 37:46Speaker 7: full of guys are going to get sent to the miners.
- 37:48Speaker 7: The more he can get out of the hotel, the better.
- 37:51Speaker 7: But he certainly, you know, was a different player when
- 37:54Speaker 7: the lights turned out and to start the regular season
- 37:56Speaker 7: training camp, he was good, but not like I think
- 37:59Speaker 7: I've heard Jefferson talk about this as well. All of
- 38:01Speaker 7: a sudden, the regular season lights came on and this
- 38:03Speaker 7: guy's like, Okay, I'm in now I'm gonna start scoring.
- 38:07Speaker 4: What do you think makes it that way for him?
- 38:09Speaker 3: Because you know, you also saw him when he's so young,
- 38:12Speaker 3: and and do you ever sit back and watch and
- 38:15Speaker 3: could you have predicted when you saw him and saw
- 38:19Speaker 3: the way he acted off the asanes, that he would
- 38:21Speaker 3: have gotten to this milestone and be the greatest goal
- 38:24Speaker 3: scorer NHL history.
- 38:26Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean I think that you score fifty plus
- 38:29Speaker 7: your rookie year, certainly there's a trend line that is unique.
- 38:33Speaker 7: But to have the longevity and the health that he's had,
- 38:36Speaker 7: I think is you know, pretty special and important. He's
- 38:41Speaker 7: a strong, big bodied guy right from the get go.
- 38:44Speaker 7: I mean his fingers look like my thumb, like just bigger,
- 38:48Speaker 7: like he's just at nineteen that year, I mean he
- 38:51Speaker 7: had to be two hundred and twenty five pounds like
- 38:53Speaker 7: he was, and it wasn't fat, Like this guy's just
- 38:56Speaker 7: a horse, and so I can't say that anybody was
- 39:01Speaker 7: going to expect that. But I remember looking him going
- 39:03Speaker 7: in nineteen and I didn't look like that at nineteen,
- 39:06Speaker 7: Like I don't look like that, you know, ever, But
- 39:09Speaker 7: he's certainly strong and just has that kind of like
- 39:13Speaker 7: almost that farm kid strength that you would say with
- 39:16Speaker 7: like the Western Canadian players.
- 39:20Speaker 5: You played in Hershey for Bruce Boudreaux and that you know,
- 39:24Speaker 5: he gets a promotion to the Caps.
- 39:26Speaker 7: What was.
- 39:28Speaker 5: American Hockey League?
- 39:32Speaker 7: I mean, so my Bruce Boudreau experienced ranges from seeing
- 39:37Speaker 7: him in Hershey to seeing him get called up and
- 39:41Speaker 7: he's like a player getting called up. He's so excited
- 39:43Speaker 7: that then covering him with the wild and so there's
- 39:46Speaker 7: like a lot of time and he's grown and you know,
- 39:51Speaker 7: had success in the league. He was great. But I
- 39:54Speaker 7: think when he was in Hershey that was like his
- 39:56Speaker 7: comfort space. He was a legend there. He could his
- 40:00Speaker 7: teams were always good, and he cared like he was
- 40:05Speaker 7: really good about developing hockey players, and I appreciated that
- 40:09Speaker 7: out of him. I was on the other side of
- 40:11Speaker 7: it where he's like, hey, I know you don't want
- 40:12Speaker 7: to be here. We're going to try to do the
- 40:15Speaker 7: best we can to make your situation better, maybe get
- 40:18Speaker 7: traded whatever. I was really happy for him when he
- 40:21Speaker 7: got caught up. I thought x's and o's he was.
- 40:24Speaker 7: He was really good when he got to the wild.
- 40:28Speaker 7: You know, he'd had success in Washington, he'd been and Anaheim.
- 40:32Speaker 7: You know, then he was just I felt like he's like,
- 40:34Speaker 7: screw it, I'm good, Like I cared less. He doesn't
- 40:37Speaker 7: trying to be buttoned up. He's like, I don't need
- 40:39Speaker 7: I'm just gonna be authentically me. And that's the Bruce
- 40:42Speaker 7: where I like enjoyed and just kind of chuckled because
- 40:46Speaker 7: he may have his tie and one thing might be
- 40:49Speaker 7: up like this, and he doesn't care. He's just like,
- 40:51Speaker 7: this is great and I'm comfortable. I'm gonna coach and whatever.
- 40:56Speaker 7: He's a beauty but smart, smart hockey coach.
- 40:59Speaker 3: Did you ever be cause we you know, me and
- 41:02Speaker 3: Adnan famously had Pat Maroon on and Pat Maroon took
- 41:05Speaker 3: us through his pregame meal and was one of the
- 41:10Speaker 3: funnier clips we ever put up.
- 41:11Speaker 4: I don't know if you ever had any because we
- 41:14Speaker 4: work I work with him at the net. We all
- 41:15Speaker 4: work with the network.
- 41:16Speaker 3: And ye, I mean it is just what you described
- 41:20Speaker 3: him in many is what he is now of like
- 41:23Speaker 3: he's just such an amazing human being, so nice, so
- 41:27Speaker 3: great with his time, like loves Wwe like to the Instagram,
- 41:31Speaker 3: which is like the weirdest thing and but like just
- 41:34Speaker 3: so funny. But you know, I don't know if you
- 41:37Speaker 3: have any I don't want to tunk on him again. No,
- 41:41Speaker 3: I mean stories are the best because he admits that
- 41:44Speaker 3: he's like I.
- 41:44Speaker 4: Love to eat.
- 41:46Speaker 7: I would say this, and I can't give you for
- 41:48Speaker 7: instance of like I watched him like buring like three
- 41:51Speaker 7: chicken palms or something. But I will say that I'm
- 41:53Speaker 7: sure that he knew, Like you know, when you're in
- 41:55Speaker 7: the miners, you fill out the thing in the front
- 41:57Speaker 7: of the bus or whatever, and then your food shows up.
- 42:00Speaker 7: I can promise you he could probably walk you through,
- 42:02Speaker 7: like Okay, we're here and we're playing Rochester. I'm ordering
- 42:07Speaker 7: this off the sheet because he probably had them all
- 42:09Speaker 7: memorized or whatever and was just crushing him in the
- 42:11Speaker 7: front of the bus. But I don't have anything it's
- 42:14Speaker 7: specifically about it. But yes, he liked to eat. Wasn't
- 42:18Speaker 7: shy about it, and uh, you know wore that well
- 42:22Speaker 7: last one for me.
- 42:23Speaker 2: Ben.
- 42:23Speaker 1: With regards to the finances, again, how big a factor
- 42:26Speaker 1: is state tax and players choosing where to sign and
- 42:29Speaker 1: how challenging is the Washington state millionaire attacks to the
- 42:32Speaker 1: cracking because edge of and Oski among former Panthers, I said, hey, guys,
- 42:35Speaker 1: you know there was no state tax back in the day.
- 42:37Speaker 1: Like everyone to think that now this is the thing
- 42:39Speaker 1: directing all these players.
- 42:41Speaker 2: But how much of a challenge is it.
- 42:43Speaker 7: It's it's a it's a massive and I mean, you know,
- 42:47Speaker 7: business talked about I think like kind of blew up
- 42:49Speaker 7: the topic saying, gosh, the league should should make amends
- 42:53Speaker 7: to make this this whole. Gary's come on and said, well, look,
- 42:56Speaker 7: you know, go to yesteryear and and when I was
- 42:58Speaker 7: in Tampa, it's like nobody cared. The team was brutal,
- 43:00Speaker 7: so people didn't want to sign in Tampa. But what
- 43:03Speaker 7: you've had this you kind of had a number of
- 43:05Speaker 7: things collide together. Number One, the Southern teams have gotten good.
- 43:10Speaker 7: They're not expansion teams anymore. There's solid businesses that have
- 43:15Speaker 7: veteran players and now they have lots of Stanley cups
- 43:18Speaker 7: behind them, salary caps going up. I think this though
- 43:24Speaker 7: players are also more educated. I'm going to walk you
- 43:26Speaker 7: through this an area that we walked one of our
- 43:28Speaker 7: players through last year. They got an offer from one
- 43:32Speaker 7: of the Canadian teams and rough math it was five
- 43:35Speaker 7: y five, so twenty five million bucks. Then they got
- 43:37Speaker 7: an offer from a tax friendly environment that they kind
- 43:42Speaker 7: of sort of would be willing to go to, but
- 43:44Speaker 7: they wanted to go to a lot more than going
- 43:46Speaker 7: to this Canadian city. And so we're having a conversation
- 43:50Speaker 7: about it, and I said, look like, let's go post tax,
- 43:53Speaker 7: let's forget pre tax. Let's look at what's actually going
- 43:56Speaker 7: to go in your genes, like how much are you
- 43:58Speaker 7: actually going to put into your account? And it was
- 44:01Speaker 7: surprising to him how much more he was at actually
- 44:04Speaker 7: going to make with a lower AAV plane in a
- 44:08Speaker 7: tax friendly state. And that was a huge part, if
- 44:11Speaker 7: not the nail in the coffin for the Canadian team.
- 44:14Speaker 7: And I don't say that you know and want to
- 44:17Speaker 7: bang on Canada, it's just the economics right now are
- 44:20Speaker 7: very difficult for them. And then if you look at
- 44:22Speaker 7: those teams too, you know, is it the carters at
- 44:25Speaker 7: the horse. Are they bad because of the tax? Are
- 44:27Speaker 7: they bad because they're poorly run? Well, I would say
- 44:30Speaker 7: a lot of them have both going in their favor
- 44:32Speaker 7: right now or both negatives. And so it's easy to say,
- 44:36Speaker 7: you know what, I don't want to go deal with
- 44:38Speaker 7: the travel, the currency, the media. It's just easier to
- 44:44Speaker 7: go play in Carolina. Like it's not zero tax. But
- 44:48Speaker 7: you know what you're after. Practice activities are postgame expectations
- 44:53Speaker 7: are tenfold either in playing in Montreal, Vancouver, you know
- 44:57Speaker 7: you going right down the list.
- 44:59Speaker 3: Well, let's throw Minnesota in there, because we've got to
- 45:01Speaker 3: talk a little wild for you talking Quinn Hughes and
- 45:04Speaker 3: con tracks in what your thoughts are finance wise with
- 45:07Speaker 3: the Minnesota Wild and how do they get this thing done?
- 45:10Speaker 3: With Quinn and you know you live there, and we
- 45:13Speaker 3: talked a little bit before we came on air of
- 45:15Speaker 3: just you know how Minnesota is a desirable place for
- 45:18Speaker 3: guys to live post career. But has it become enough
- 45:22Speaker 3: and is it enough, you know, tax wise and city
- 45:26Speaker 3: wise to kind of an entice a guy like Quinn
- 45:29Speaker 3: Hughes And what do you think it's going to take
- 45:31Speaker 3: for them to get this done.
- 45:33Speaker 7: Well. I mean, tax wise, we're a bit of a
- 45:35Speaker 7: nightmare transparently. I mean, we are a high tax state
- 45:40Speaker 7: and we've been you know, I hate to say it,
- 45:42Speaker 7: but we've been the laughing stock of the US for
- 45:45Speaker 7: lots of things politically motivated that we don't need to
- 45:47Speaker 7: touch on, but it may matter to some individuals. I
- 45:54Speaker 7: had Jim Hughes as my coach when I played in
- 45:56Speaker 7: the KHL, so that's interesting. I saw him at some
- 46:00Speaker 7: of the playoff games. I don't know this to be true,
- 46:02Speaker 7: but I believe that I'm probably closer to right than
- 46:05Speaker 7: people would believe. Certainly, the money matters. However, I think
- 46:10Speaker 7: when Quinn came here, he was probably thinking significantly different
- 46:14Speaker 7: than he thinks today because he was thinking, look, I'll
- 46:16Speaker 7: play this thing out and I'm going to go somewhere else. Well,
- 46:19Speaker 7: he shows up and is a tremendous fit with this
- 46:23Speaker 7: hockey team, and I think he had a lot of
- 46:25Speaker 7: fun and the team had a lot of success, and
- 46:27Speaker 7: the community loves him like he's electric to watch. I mean,
- 46:30Speaker 7: any young defenseman in the state of Minnesota, if you're
- 46:33Speaker 7: not watching Quinn, he was like, you're doing something wrong
- 46:36Speaker 7: or you better be watching Brought Favor. The way I
- 46:38Speaker 7: see the world, I think it's more about them continuing
- 46:42Speaker 7: to build a winning opportunity, Like I think that matters more.
- 46:46Speaker 7: He's going to get the money. If he gets eighteen
- 46:48Speaker 7: million or nineteen million or twenty two million, like, what's
- 46:50Speaker 7: the difference? His kids kids are going to have to
- 46:52Speaker 7: figure that out. It's not going to matter to him
- 46:55Speaker 7: if I was, you know, talking with him. That's the
- 47:00Speaker 7: most important question. Is this a money decision or is
- 47:02Speaker 7: this a winning decision? I think the money's already spoken for,
- 47:06Speaker 7: Like he's going to get enough of it, and he
- 47:08Speaker 7: could he could take all of it if you wanted.
- 47:10Speaker 7: But he can't take all of it and win. And
- 47:12Speaker 7: I think he's smart enough to figure that out. And
- 47:14Speaker 7: so I believe the contract is more about or the
- 47:18Speaker 7: discussion points are what else are you going to put
- 47:20Speaker 7: on the table that is going to get this team
- 47:22Speaker 7: over the hump? Which leads to some of the Dylan
- 47:25Speaker 7: Larkin conversations. Certainly, you know Austin Matthews. I mean, we're
- 47:28Speaker 7: talking about American players who played for Bill Garrand, and
- 47:32Speaker 7: so that's easy. But you know Bill's going to continue
- 47:34Speaker 7: to be aggressive, and I think that that's, you know,
- 47:39Speaker 7: very attractive the players out there, and I think Bill's
- 47:43Speaker 7: approachable and he's smart, and I think all the players
- 47:47Speaker 7: do appreciate that.
- 47:51Speaker 4: Well.
- 47:52Speaker 3: Country's one thing, but once you got to get the
- 47:55Speaker 3: wamp them involved with Quinn Hughes and his relationship with
- 47:58Speaker 3: Billy G I think it changes a little bit. But
- 48:00Speaker 3: I had one more. I was just looking before we
- 48:03Speaker 3: came on uh.
- 48:04Speaker 4: Uh to talk to you. You played it.
- 48:06Speaker 3: We talked a little bit about OV and DC, but
- 48:08Speaker 3: you played with my boy Eric Fair and I had
- 48:13Speaker 3: I had a great story with him because I played
- 48:16Speaker 3: in Russia with him our last years, trying to make
- 48:21Speaker 3: it to the Olympics. And we're sitting at a at
- 48:24Speaker 3: a restaurant. We're sitting at a bar together having drink.
- 48:27Speaker 3: All of a sudden his phone rings and we're like,
- 48:28Speaker 3: you know, a month into the season, and he looks
- 48:31Speaker 3: at me and he goes, it's OV calling me right now.
- 48:34Speaker 4: And he goes, it's it's OVI on FaceTime. And we're
- 48:37Speaker 4: in like, I can't remember where we were.
- 48:38Speaker 3: We're on the road, and he picks up the phone
- 48:40Speaker 3: and it's OV crushing beers going.
- 48:43Speaker 4: You motherfucker you were.
- 48:44Speaker 2: You were making fun of the Khel and he goes, look.
- 48:47Speaker 4: Or you're playing.
- 48:47Speaker 3: He goes, you're playing a mother in Russia and he's
- 48:50Speaker 3: just crushing beers and Fansier is telling me how much
- 48:53Speaker 3: you just ship on the KHL to him and how
- 48:55Speaker 3: bad of a league it is.
- 48:56Speaker 4: And then it just like so funny how he ended
- 49:00Speaker 4: up there.
- 49:01Speaker 3: But I mean talk, I mean talk about fairs. He
- 49:03Speaker 3: just a locker room guy, T two tea, and I
- 49:07Speaker 3: just can't imagine him and Ov matching up together and
- 49:10Speaker 3: how that looked, especially both them young.
- 49:13Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean Eric was is and was incredibly talented
- 49:17Speaker 7: to be looking at some of his junior stat lines
- 49:19Speaker 7: and he was so yeah, he could he could put
- 49:22Speaker 7: it away. I mean, he could fly in a terrific
- 49:27Speaker 7: guy like you could argue that he would have been
- 49:29Speaker 7: quite a bit more successful if he would have just
- 49:31Speaker 7: been an absolute prick out there at twenty four to seven.
- 49:35Speaker 7: He was, you know, a gentleman even during the game
- 49:38Speaker 7: when he was scoring. Score nice on you like probably
- 49:40Speaker 7: like I'm sorry about that, but you're not good enough.
- 49:42Speaker 7: I'm just gonna blow your tires off right now. But
- 49:45Speaker 7: I thought Eric was awesome. You know, a good, good human,
- 49:51Speaker 7: good locker room guy. He's been interesting to uh. You know,
- 49:55Speaker 7: as I was exiting as he was coming in to
- 49:57Speaker 7: follow him, because I was dating my wife at the time,
- 50:01Speaker 7: and she's like, that guy's really good. Like you're slow
- 50:04Speaker 7: out there, but that guy looks like he's going fast
- 50:06Speaker 7: all the time. And I'm like, yep, that one's going
- 50:08Speaker 7: to work out. And if anything, I mean, he had
- 50:11Speaker 7: some injuries in his career. Had he been healthier, I
- 50:14Speaker 7: think the numbers he would have put up in the
- 50:16Speaker 7: NHL would shock a lot of people. But if you
- 50:19Speaker 7: played with them, and you know, you played against him,
- 50:22Speaker 7: I mean, he did have that kind of talent where
- 50:24Speaker 7: he I could have seen him scoring forty goals in
- 50:26Speaker 7: the NHL for you know a number of years with
- 50:29Speaker 7: his talents.
- 50:30Speaker 4: Yeah, he ended up in rush with me.
- 50:32Speaker 5: Yeah, he scored fifty at will in the WHL. It
- 50:36Speaker 5: was like, yeah, so, how was how was your time
- 50:39Speaker 5: as you were finishing it in Russia? Like what was
- 50:40Speaker 5: your experience over there? I know it's different for every
- 50:42Speaker 5: single guy. Everyone has some stories, So I'm sure you
- 50:46Speaker 5: got the best.
- 50:49Speaker 7: I didn't. I didn't know totally what I was getting
- 50:52Speaker 7: into I would say I look back on it better
- 50:54Speaker 7: now than I did at the time, But there was
- 50:56Speaker 7: some funny things. I mean, so I came over a
- 51:00Speaker 7: little bit late. They'd already fired the first head coach,
- 51:02Speaker 7: and Jim Hughes was the head coach, and so so
- 51:05Speaker 7: I fly over there, I stay in this hotel and I,
- 51:07Speaker 7: you know, walk my bag a quarter mile of the
- 51:09Speaker 7: rink in the first morning and I get in there,
- 51:11Speaker 7: I drop my bag off and Jim Hughes is bouncing
- 51:13Speaker 7: off the walls in this video session he's getting ready
- 51:16Speaker 7: for and I'm like, hey, dude, I just can someone
- 51:20Speaker 7: unpack my gear? And can somebody get me a coffee?
- 51:22Speaker 7: That's like all I want right now. Like I don't
- 51:24Speaker 7: care about practice, I don't care about anything. I'm jet lagged.
- 51:28Speaker 7: Just could I just have coffee? And I'm going to
- 51:30Speaker 7: try to go out there and not pull something today
- 51:32Speaker 7: in practice. He's like, this is the biggest game of
- 51:33Speaker 7: the year on Thursday.
- 51:35Speaker 5: Just you know.
- 51:36Speaker 7: I'm like, I don't even know who we're playing Thursday,
- 51:38Speaker 7: and I certainly don't care. And he's like, We're going
- 51:40Speaker 7: to play the Belarussian national team, and da da dah
- 51:43Speaker 7: dah dah, and so I get through practice. Fortunately, don't
- 51:46Speaker 7: hurt myself. The next day I show up and I
- 51:48Speaker 7: could like, all right, I can kind of play it
- 51:50Speaker 7: the next day, and then the following day was the game,
- 51:53Speaker 7: and I can now understand why it's such a big deal.
- 51:58Speaker 7: The first team in Belarus that's going to play in
- 52:00Speaker 7: the kh I'll get play against their national team, and
- 52:01Speaker 7: they really wanted to make sure we won. Well, our
- 52:04Speaker 7: team was awful, like we were awful, I mean terrible,
- 52:08Speaker 7: terrible hockey team. And so after the first period, I
- 52:11Speaker 7: come in and have our captain, Alex is next to
- 52:13Speaker 7: me and he speaks English and I score in the
- 52:17Speaker 7: first period. So I'm sitting there like, oh yeah, I'm good, Like,
- 52:19Speaker 7: no big deal. You know, We're down to one, and
- 52:22Speaker 7: all of a sudden, this guy comes flying into the
- 52:25Speaker 7: locker room freaking out at the top of his lungs.
- 52:28Speaker 7: I look at Alex, I'm my cow, tell the guy
- 52:30Speaker 7: to get the fuck out of the locker om right now.
- 52:31Speaker 7: I was like, no, no, no, look at the floor,
- 52:33Speaker 7: look at the floor. Right after this guy comes a
- 52:35Speaker 7: guy with a German shepherd. The next guy with the
- 52:38Speaker 7: machine gun, and I'm like, oh, I get this now,
- 52:40Speaker 7: like I need to feel shamed, and so he's losing
- 52:44Speaker 7: his mind on us. And he was the vice president
- 52:46Speaker 7: of the country effectively, and you know, coming into yell
- 52:49Speaker 7: at us after the first period when we were down
- 52:51Speaker 7: by a goal, and that kind of set the tone
- 52:54Speaker 7: for the way it was going to be all year long.
- 52:56Speaker 7: Our team was terrible. You know, we'd get yelled at
- 52:59Speaker 7: all the time. You know, practice would start when the
- 53:01Speaker 7: zamboni doors closed and they would end when they all
- 53:04Speaker 7: and they would practice the wheels off you every minute
- 53:08Speaker 7: that they had available. And like that league when I mean,
- 53:14Speaker 7: I don't know for you guys, but like I've flown
- 53:16Speaker 7: into more airports with dirt floors than I am proud
- 53:19Speaker 7: to say across Russia. I've seen more feral dogs on
- 53:23Speaker 7: runways than most Americans, that is for sure. When this all,
- 53:29Speaker 7: when the season ended, I took a picture of our
- 53:31Speaker 7: plane and it had a glass tip, yes, a glass
- 53:34Speaker 7: tip to the front of the plane. And a friend
- 53:37Speaker 7: of mine works for this company called Elliot Aviation, so
- 53:39Speaker 7: I sent him a picture. I did not want to
- 53:41Speaker 7: send it to him before the years over because I
- 53:42Speaker 7: didn't want to know how bad this plane was well,
- 53:45Speaker 7: I send it to him. He brings it down to
- 53:47Speaker 7: the mechanics and they're rolling laughing, like you flew that
- 53:51Speaker 7: plane across Russia. It was an old plane where like
- 53:53Speaker 7: that's where the gunner would be at the front of
- 53:55Speaker 7: this freaking plane. Can't make it up.
- 54:00Speaker 4: And that was the way that the plane leaked at
- 54:03Speaker 4: me in a B fifty two bomber, Like.
- 54:06Speaker 7: Every every we'd take up, drip drip, drip, until it
- 54:10Speaker 7: would gets so cold it would freeze. I mean it was.
- 54:14Speaker 7: I hope it's better, but it would. The travel was brutal,
- 54:21Speaker 7: it was. It was a unique experience, that's for sure.
- 54:25Speaker 7: And I could go on and on, but it was
- 54:28Speaker 7: a down of a new era of like whoa, I
- 54:31Speaker 7: got to make it through this whole year like this.
- 54:35Speaker 7: It's it's tough. I'm not going back to the Russia
- 54:37Speaker 7: the rest of my life. I can promise you that.
- 54:40Speaker 7: And when people ask me, like, oh, what you know,
- 54:42Speaker 7: I'm thinking about going on one of those Viking cruises
- 54:44Speaker 7: to see Russia, I'm like, here's what you do. This
- 54:47Speaker 7: is simple. Google Russia and book a trip to Hawaii.
- 54:51Speaker 7: You'll thank me later.
- 54:55Speaker 2: That is the perfect mic front.
- 54:57Speaker 1: Ben Climber, a terrific NHL player, obviously stories for days,
- 55:00Speaker 1: and a great success now as a financial planner.
- 55:02Speaker 2: Ben, this was awesome, man, Thank you so much.
- 55:04Speaker 4: This was right.
- 55:04Speaker 7: Yeah, thanks guys, appreciate it.
- 55:14Speaker 2: Thanks again to Ben Klimber. He was fantastic.
- 55:16Speaker 1: Again, if you ever in Minnesota, maybe go look at
- 55:19Speaker 1: Ben Claimber if he wants some financial advice. He's definitely
- 55:21Speaker 1: a bright guy, knows this stuff and obviously has stories
- 55:23Speaker 1: for days.
- 55:23Speaker 2: And Ny you said you knew him.
- 55:24Speaker 1: You played against when you're seventeen, so you go way
- 55:26Speaker 1: back with Ben Klimber, right, Yeah, I.
- 55:29Speaker 5: Was still in junior and I that's when I hopped
- 55:31Speaker 5: on board with Octagon and Brian Latton and I was
- 55:34Speaker 5: going to Minnesota and skating with a lot of those guys.
- 55:36Speaker 5: Ben Climber, Brett heddeck In, those are the names that
- 55:38Speaker 5: really jump out. And that's when Benny was kind of
- 55:41Speaker 5: uh yeah, that was when he was, you know, in
- 55:43Speaker 5: the NHL in Tampa and winning a Cup. So it
- 55:46Speaker 5: was nice to have him on. He's great, dude.
- 55:49Speaker 1: I always think Jada, when someone says they're a financial planner,
- 55:51Speaker 1: either they're always good with money or terrible with money
- 55:54Speaker 1: and trying to make amends.
- 55:55Speaker 2: I'm not sure which one it was a benk Clamber.
- 55:56Speaker 2: I think he probably was always good with money.
- 55:59Speaker 1: Lost money, Yeah, he lost a lot of money, and
- 56:00Speaker 1: he realized, Hey, you know what, I don't want that
- 56:02Speaker 1: to happen to other people what happened to me?
- 56:04Speaker 4: And I'm gonna be ballers.
- 56:06Speaker 2: Yeah, click the rock baller like that.
- 56:11Speaker 1: That's what I think is bed Claver's ballers, all right,
- 56:13Speaker 1: sine file in sixty I pulled a bait and switch
- 56:16Speaker 1: on towel. I told my I wanted to talk a
- 56:17Speaker 1: Blue Heron, which is a critical acclaimed film which is wonderful.
- 56:20Speaker 1: It's out of Vancouver and everyone should watch. It's really good.
- 56:22Speaker 1: But for our podcast, people are interested in these independent
- 56:25Speaker 1: Canadian films. But go watch Blue Heron if you're into that.
- 56:27Speaker 1: What I knew he'd be into and it would titillate
- 56:29Speaker 1: tal and offend JD. It's a new film called I
- 56:32Speaker 1: Want Your Sex. It stars Olivia Wilde and the son
- 56:34Speaker 1: of the great Philips Himura Hoffin Cooper Hoffman.
- 56:37Speaker 2: And what's happening to this movie? It's all S and M.
- 56:39Speaker 1: She plays the boss, he plays the underling. That comes
- 56:42Speaker 1: in one of the first scenes. She says to listen,
- 56:44Speaker 1: do you have a girlfriend?
- 56:45Speaker 2: He's like yeah, he's okay, so you won't want if
- 56:46Speaker 2: we have sex together. He's like what.
- 56:47Speaker 1: He's like, Oh, I'm your boss. You're gonna do what
- 56:49Speaker 1: I tell you to do. And he is willfully going
- 56:51Speaker 1: into this trap. It's much like the film Secretary member
- 56:54Speaker 1: James Spader, Maggie Gillenhall.
- 56:55Speaker 2: Yeah, but the role is a little reversed here.
- 56:57Speaker 1: She's the one in charge. And when my buddy Tyler
- 56:59Speaker 1: saw it loved. I say just one quick question, how
- 57:02Speaker 1: racy is it? Because racing?
- 57:03Speaker 2: How much nudity? He's like nudity, I go top bottom,
- 57:06Speaker 2: He's like Olivia Wild topless. In the first minute.
- 57:08Speaker 1: I said, that's a good Scotger pork because no onally
- 57:10Speaker 1: get there a little late. Maybe you want to get
- 57:11Speaker 1: some milk duds, a couple of extra.
- 57:13Speaker 2: Trailers, gonna better on my ass, and a seat there
- 57:15Speaker 2: right out the gate. We're gonna have some racy outfits
- 57:18Speaker 2: there from a littly Wild.
- 57:19Speaker 1: It's really funny, it's provocative and hopefully they'll get these
- 57:22Speaker 1: kids out there, these gen zs and millennials off their
- 57:25Speaker 1: phones and in there watching TV because you know, much
- 57:27Speaker 1: like back in the day, and they's watching wild things.
- 57:29Speaker 1: I'm watching basic things. Think this is what these kids
- 57:31Speaker 1: they should be doing. So Cooper hop and by the way,
- 57:34Speaker 1: again the son of the great Philips Humer Hoffen. He
- 57:36Speaker 1: was in the Criterion closet. Talley picked up the great
- 57:38Speaker 1: film Happiness Todd sol Ons and he goes. I picked
- 57:40Speaker 1: it up because not many people can say they can
- 57:42Speaker 1: watch me in which their dad was masturbating, so clearly
- 57:44Speaker 1: has a good sense of humor like his dad.
- 57:46Speaker 2: How you've heard of this movie? It's a big hit
- 57:48Speaker 2: at sun Decks Sunday.
- 57:49Speaker 1: It's Gregor Rocky, the director did Mysterious Skin, great film
- 57:51Speaker 1: back in the day.
- 57:52Speaker 2: So check out. I want your sex. Good counter programming
- 57:54Speaker 2: for the Odyssey.
- 57:58Speaker 4: I heard good thing.
- 57:59Speaker 3: I'm just looking at that. I'm looking at the videos
- 58:02Speaker 3: on Twitter right now.
- 58:04Speaker 2: Good tell you've heard of the movie.
- 58:06Speaker 6: Highlights a lot about a movie, and I've been waiting
- 58:10Speaker 6: for Cooper Hoffman's next next starring role for a while,
- 58:14Speaker 6: so I might check it out. And I was just
- 58:16Speaker 6: gonna add I saw Tony the Bourdaine Yes Story. I
- 58:20Speaker 6: just directed by Matt Johnson really enjoyed.
- 58:22Speaker 4: It to watch that, did you like it?
- 58:24Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, I enjoyed it. I mean, it's fan fiction,
- 58:26Speaker 6: it's not you know, it's not the real deal. But
- 58:28Speaker 6: I watched the Chances are great. Antonio banderas very fine performance.
- 58:34Speaker 6: And yeah, Matt Johnson, who I've since discovered, he's the
- 58:37Speaker 6: director Canadian.
- 58:39Speaker 4: He's one of the two members of this Nirvana, the Nirvana.
- 58:43Speaker 4: The band.
- 58:44Speaker 2: People talk about that movie a lot too.
- 58:45Speaker 5: You're very funny.
- 58:46Speaker 4: I did a deep dive.
- 58:48Speaker 6: I watched it was the movie was recommended to me,
- 58:50Speaker 6: and then I started watching the show.
- 58:51Speaker 4: It's all on Hulu. It's it's hilarious. I love these guys.
- 58:55Speaker 2: The movie was funny as well. I I haven't seen
- 58:56Speaker 2: the movie yet. I've heard of the show, but the
- 58:58Speaker 2: movie is funny. Tell yeah, yeah, the movie is great.
- 59:00Speaker 6: They rip off every show and every movie you've ever
- 59:03Speaker 6: heard of, but they do it in a very satirical,
- 59:06Speaker 6: funny way.
- 59:07Speaker 3: I watched Big Chicken, a fast food conspiracy documentary with
- 59:12Speaker 3: with my mom and I tell you what, never again,
- 59:17Speaker 3: don't watch it.
- 59:18Speaker 4: Yeah. No, I'm not telling you, but.
- 59:20Speaker 2: To write down. But it's not a good recommendation avoid,
- 59:22Speaker 2: but you know it's.
- 59:23Speaker 3: It's it's great, but it is eye opening. This guy
- 59:26Speaker 3: eats chicken. He eats fried chicken three meals a day
- 59:30Speaker 3: from a month. It's kind of like organize me super
- 59:35Speaker 3: But he goes really deep on the chicken and like
- 59:39Speaker 3: and goes to the you know, he goes Tyson Foods
- 59:42Speaker 3: and he goes tries to go the factories and the
- 59:45Speaker 3: plants and go inside. I mean, it is absolutely disgusting
- 59:48Speaker 3: what they feed us, So you would.
- 59:50Speaker 2: Never want to eat chicken again. I love chicken. I
- 59:52Speaker 2: eat chicken, fried chicken.
- 59:55Speaker 4: Guys, Yeah, I don't.
- 59:56Speaker 3: I stopped eating I kind of stopped eating chicken probably
- 1:00:01Speaker 3: three years ago, really, and I have like I've had,
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: you know, since that time. You know, I I cut
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: it out completely for probably two years. In the past year,
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: I probably had chicken on one hand, but I might
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: go back to no chicken after this.
- 1:00:18Speaker 5: You feel better without the chicken.
- 1:00:20Speaker 4: Yeah, it goes. I'm just straight steak, steak, and fish.
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: But this chicken, what they feed us, these poor goddamn
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: chickens that are just don't even stand up.
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: And with eggs anyway, Yeah, I love eggs.
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: An eggs guy.
- 1:00:38Speaker 4: I'm an eggs guy.
- 1:00:39Speaker 6: Okay, supersized me was kind of debunked by the way.
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: I don't know for you.
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: First, you want to get into that a little bit,
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: gooh well.
- 1:00:46Speaker 6: I was just gonna say, like, it's about Morgan Spurlock
- 1:00:49Speaker 6: eating nothing but McDonald's for a month and how it
- 1:00:52Speaker 6: turned his body into a trash bin. But then it
- 1:00:54Speaker 6: turned out later he was a raging alcoholic the entire time,
- 1:00:58Speaker 6: So kind of well kind of explained not to you know,
- 1:01:01Speaker 6: rip Morgan Spurlock.
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: But ye, well I kind of made it.
- 1:01:04Speaker 5: I was gonna say, stoner in one of the two.
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it affected the Uh it shows you and
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: you add both of them. It's a recipe for ucking death.
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: Give yourself a chance there, Bubba.
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: Big Mack and a vog on the rocks. Let's get
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: after it, all right. People love a good list here.
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: I can't say this enough. Not a lot of hockey talks,
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: that's what we're going here at NHL dot com. But
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: Jad knows people get fired up about this. So top
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: ten listed defenseman mccarr quinn, Hughes Wrensky. I think most
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: would agree with the top three Doleen Hasting at five
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: was the liye opening to me, laying Hudson at six,
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: then Schaeffer at seven, Jake Sanderson eight, Most Satur at nine,
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: and what's Evan Bouchard gotta gotta do here? It could
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: give me a top five. No, he barely cracks the
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: top ten. What do you think of the list?
- 1:01:51Speaker 7: JD.
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: I thought Bouchard a little low personally, and Hasting at
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: five was a little surprising to me.
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: I had so, I had mccar, Hughes, Wrensky, Dollen all
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: the same. Yep that I had Haskin at five, you did?
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: I had Schaeffer at six, so one, I had Lam.
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: I had Lacombe at seven.
- 1:02:08Speaker 4: Ye I like that.
- 1:02:08Speaker 3: I took a swing had I had Faber at eight.
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: I had Most Cider at nine, which is where they
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: had Moca. And then number ten I had Jake Sanderson.
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: She did not have Busch on your top.
- 1:02:21Speaker 3: I had Bousche at eleven. I had Lane Hudson at twelve.
- 1:02:26Speaker 3: I went Charlie McAvoy at thirteen. I went Jacob Slavin
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: at fourteen, Josh Morrissey fifteen. I went Mikhail Sergachev at sixteen.
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: As a little bit of a flyer, people in Utah.
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: He fucking does everything. I had Yosi seventeen. Then I
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: had Adam Fox at eighteen, which they had him at thirteen.
- 1:02:46Speaker 3: I think, so I went five spots down. Now that
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: one's a point of contention because a lot of people,
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: if you look at the numbers analytically, Fox should be
- 1:02:54Speaker 3: a top ten, but I take into account I go
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: based off of last year into this year. He was
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: injured a lot of the year, so I have him down.
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: I don't even have Headman on the left because Headman
- 1:03:05Speaker 3: did not play enough and I know he's had some issues.
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: I can't see him getting back to top twenty four.
- 1:03:12Speaker 3: And actually my nineteen twenty is like my nineteen is
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: Tabes in my twenty was a mix of I think twenty.
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: I mean, you could have put Gaverickov, you could put Harley,
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: you could put Samuelson, you could put Miller.
- 1:03:25Speaker 4: But yeah, but I was close. I just had la
- 1:03:27Speaker 4: Combe and Faber up high.
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: The big difference is you had Hudson at twelve. They
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: had him at six.
- 1:03:33Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: I just think Hudson physically in the playoffs, you could
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: see he got tired. I love Hudson. I think he's
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: he's a gamer. He's incredible. I just think lacombe in
- 1:03:43Speaker 3: Faber do everything. I know Hudson does too, but Lacomb
- 1:03:48Speaker 3: is like he is designated to play against the top
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: line Layne Hudson is not. Faber does everything, and Faber
- 1:03:57Speaker 3: is absolutely incredible. It was incredible without Hughes and is
- 1:04:01Speaker 3: even better with Quinn Hughes. So I had favor well,
- 1:04:04Speaker 3: and then Sanderson, I'm very bullish. I think he wins
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: the Norris in the next five years.
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: That'd be awesome.
- 1:04:09Speaker 5: Nate your thoughts on the list, Yeah, I mean, I
- 1:04:11Speaker 5: won't go into too much depth, like GD said, because
- 1:04:15Speaker 5: he's a former defenseman, but I agree. I mean, I
- 1:04:17Speaker 5: think Jackson McComb for sure has to be in the
- 1:04:20Speaker 5: top ten. That was the one that was glaring, that
- 1:04:22Speaker 5: was missing for me as soon as I saw that.
- 1:04:23Speaker 5: And then I take Bouchard out of the top ten
- 1:04:26Speaker 5: just because I just don't think that. And I still
- 1:04:29Speaker 5: have Lane Hudson in the top ten as well. Okay,
- 1:04:32Speaker 5: I like it with board Out, I just get so
- 1:04:35Speaker 5: much just because yeah, he does. But I just think
- 1:04:38Speaker 5: with Lane Hudson, how much both him and Jackson McComb
- 1:04:41Speaker 5: kind of carry the mail for both those teams, it's
- 1:04:43Speaker 5: like they have to be in the top ten. So
- 1:04:44Speaker 5: those are the twos that really really stand out to me.
- 1:04:47Speaker 5: Is Jackson, lecolemb and Bouchard not being in the top ten.
- 1:04:51Speaker 4: I can make a case for Lane to be in
- 1:04:53Speaker 4: the top ten. Easy. Yeah, Well, the.
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: List start of the week before the dot COM's top
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: twenty wingers. We'll just go top ten for you, Nate
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: Couch your off Pasta Caprisov, Mitch Marner, Ranson and Boldie Robertson,
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: Matthew Kachuck, Cole Cawfield and Willie Nielander at number ten
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: your thoughts.
- 1:05:13Speaker 5: I'm not too far off. The one that really jumps
- 1:05:16Speaker 5: out at me, I think, and this will be you know,
- 1:05:19Speaker 5: guys will not sure is Sam reyin Hart. That's one
- 1:05:22Speaker 5: for me as a winger. I think I would even
- 1:05:27Speaker 5: take you know, I know he scored over fifty goals Caffield,
- 1:05:30Speaker 5: but so did Sam Ryan Hart a couple of seasons ago.
- 1:05:33Speaker 5: And I might even take Caffield off or Kneelander just
- 1:05:36Speaker 5: because of what Sam Ryan Hart does as a player,
- 1:05:39Speaker 5: Like he plays in every single situation, penalty, kill, power,
- 1:05:43Speaker 5: play everything, like he's kind of an all around player,
- 1:05:45Speaker 5: and I put him as one of the smartest you know,
- 1:05:47Speaker 5: hockey IQ wingers in the league. I would put him
- 1:05:50Speaker 5: in the top ten. That's the one for me. I
- 1:05:52Speaker 5: think i'd probably put him in. I'd probably take caugh
- 1:05:56Speaker 5: Field out just because I know he scored fifty goals,
- 1:06:00Speaker 5: but you know, we saw in the playoffs that he's
- 1:06:03Speaker 5: still at needs to add another dimension to his game.
- 1:06:07Speaker 5: I think where you know, you look at a guy
- 1:06:08Speaker 5: like Sam Ryan Hart and you know he's he hits
- 1:06:11Speaker 5: every box when it comes to playing playing hockey in
- 1:06:13Speaker 5: all different areas. So that's the one that really really
- 1:06:16Speaker 5: jumps out to me. All the other guys though, I
- 1:06:18Speaker 5: mean you look at Cooch Pasta, caprizof marn I mean,
- 1:06:21Speaker 5: all those guys are wingers that create time and space
- 1:06:26Speaker 5: for their line mates, where wingers usually are not looked
- 1:06:29Speaker 5: at as that, and those guys, like I said, they
- 1:06:32Speaker 5: carry the mail when it comes to uh being wingers
- 1:06:34Speaker 5: in the league for perspective.
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: By what you guys both like Lacombe, he was seventeenth
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: NHL's list. It was n't, by the way, Ryanhart fourteenth.
- 1:06:41Speaker 3: Go ahead, Jitni, Yeah, I'd actually have Marner and rant
- 1:06:45Speaker 3: and and ahead of Caprizov. I'd have capriceoff and boldly
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: next to each other. I think I'm interested to see
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: what Caprisof does without Zukurello this year and if he
- 1:06:55Speaker 3: can shoulder that load. But I would I love Capriceof.
- 1:06:59Speaker 3: I think he's the top five and I think he's
- 1:07:01Speaker 3: absolutely incredible. But Marner, I think does not get enough
- 1:07:05Speaker 3: credit for what he does defensively, and that's why I
- 1:07:08Speaker 3: have him up higher as the three car because he
- 1:07:11Speaker 3: produces plays the top on the power play in Vegas
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: for a lot of those for that Vegas power Play,
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: and then he's also the first guy with the boards
- 1:07:20Speaker 3: for the penalty kill. So I think Marner is up there.
- 1:07:24Speaker 3: And then yeah, I agree, I think Cawfield that have
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: lower on the list that I have probably in you know,
- 1:07:29Speaker 3: top fifteen, but I wouldn't have him in my top ten.
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: Closing thoughts are happy birthday to Sidney Cross because he
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: turned thirty nine. Amazing to think sid still looks youthful
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: as ever, still wants to keep going and who knows
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: what he can have as far as the future is concerned.
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: But I'm with h J D.
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: I think the Penguins last year were success story. This
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: year they missed the playoffs, and I'm curious what's going
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: to happen with Sid. I feel like he's the kind
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: guy that can play till forty forty one forty two.
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: But I don't think the Penguins have a strong season.
- 1:07:55Speaker 3: No, I think they might miss or just squeak in
- 1:07:57Speaker 3: in the final spot. I don't like what they did.
- 1:08:00Speaker 3: I don't know if Philly makes it back. I think Jersey,
- 1:08:03Speaker 3: if they can stay healthy, does it. And then I
- 1:08:05Speaker 3: I'm bullish on Columbus. I think I want to see
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: if Columbus can pull up their socks and not be
- 1:08:11Speaker 3: little bitches after the end last year and make it
- 1:08:14Speaker 3: back to the playoffs. But I think I'm a little
- 1:08:16Speaker 3: nervous on Pittsburgh. Yeah, it's the goat.
- 1:08:20Speaker 5: He is the goat. He's still going to be a
- 1:08:22Speaker 5: point per game guy. We're still going to get him
- 1:08:25Speaker 5: doing that every season. But I saw your you know,
- 1:08:29Speaker 5: and I'm with you, Jap like you you your Metro
- 1:08:31Speaker 5: division standings like before the season and is like this
- 1:08:34Speaker 5: is the biggest wild card division. I think because yes,
- 1:08:38Speaker 5: the other one, yeah, like the other one is that
- 1:08:40Speaker 5: you talked about. I mean Pittsburgh, I don't know if
- 1:08:42Speaker 5: they're going to get either, but like the Islanders, like,
- 1:08:43Speaker 5: what are they going to do this year? They're going
- 1:08:45Speaker 5: to finish, you know, I help you. Yeah, in the
- 1:08:48Speaker 5: mix with they're going to be eight like you had him,
- 1:08:51Speaker 5: you know, so I don't.
- 1:08:51Speaker 4: Know, Yeah I had him.
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: I have Islanders eighth right now, and I have New
- 1:08:55Speaker 3: York Rangers seven, and I'm but it depends because Paul Mary,
- 1:09:01Speaker 3: you know, blew his knee out. They had a lot
- 1:09:02Speaker 3: of injuries down the stretch. Can do get a lot
- 1:09:05Speaker 3: out of them, Shae for another year and they got
- 1:09:06Speaker 3: a great goaltender. So I mean easily Islanders could be third.
- 1:09:11Speaker 3: It's I think three to eight in the Metro is
- 1:09:13Speaker 3: a fucking point. It's gonna be separated by like four
- 1:09:15Speaker 3: or five points.
- 1:09:16Speaker 5: Yeah, you have Washed, Carolina, Columbus one, two, three.
- 1:09:19Speaker 3: Yeah, Columbus is my flyer, but I have I think
- 1:09:22Speaker 3: Washed and Carolina are they're they're gonna be twenty points
- 1:09:26Speaker 3: ahead of all those teams.
- 1:09:27Speaker 4: Yeah, I agree with that.
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: Yeah, Well, we're building up to spring of course training camp.
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: We're coming up in September. Episto Dumber ninety four, so
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: six more away from the vaunted one hundred mark. And
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: as we close, I gotta hope everyone joys this summer.
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: We'll see it back in a couple of weeks here
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: in ny Stellan script. It's a late August, will crank
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: out one more and then by September we'll be training
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: camps and again Mark tann san Luis meeting Jerry Seinfeld.
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: That's one of the highlights of this summer.
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: And apparently Seinfeld said to him, Howie Morenz has a
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: statue and Ken Dryden doesn't.
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: But what's the deal with that?
- 1:09:54Speaker 4: What's the deal with that?
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: See the next tent of that script.
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: Is NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and
