Latest / Traveler’s Tales / R.A. Torrey: Strong Faith and Faithful Service
Transcript
- 0:00Some lives are loud, others are steady, and sometimes the most powerful legacy is not
- 0:19found in a dramatic moment, but in a lifetime of quiet faithfulness.
- 0:25This man may not be as widely known as some of his contemporaries, but his influence shaped
- 0:31generations.
- 0:32R.A.
- 0:33Torrey.
- 0:34If you've ever heard of the Moody Bible Institute or benefited from its ministry, you've felt
- 0:39his influence.
- 0:41If you've been helped by the preaching of D.L.
- 0:43Moody, you've indirectly been helped by Torrey.
- 0:47If you've read solid Bible teaching that stirred your confidence in the Word of God, then you
- 0:53have walked a path that he helped clear.
- 0:57But his story didn't begin with large crowds.
- 1:00It began with a praying mother.
- 1:03I'm Greg Dowdy, and you're listening to Traveler's Tales, produced by Enjoying the Journey.
- 1:09On our own journeys of faith, it is helpful for us to remember and learn from the men
- 1:14and women who faithfully followed Christ in history.
- 1:17Yes, times have changed since these people lived.
- 1:20The world looks different.
- 1:22But the God in whom they trusted has not changed.
- 1:25The gospel they proclaimed has not changed.
- 1:28And the need for faithful believers has not changed.
- 1:33Reuben Archer Torrey was born in 1856 into a wealthy Christian home.
- 1:38His mother was a woman of deep conviction and consistent prayer.
- 1:43Though the family held some doctrinal views that would later be refined, they honored
- 1:48the Lord's Day and filled it with Scripture and worship.
- 1:53Young Torrey was brilliant.
- 1:55He entered college at 15.
- 1:58But intelligence is no substitute for conversion.
- 2:02While at Yale University, Torrey wrestled internally.
- 2:06He sensed that God might be calling him into ministry.
- 2:10And in his resistance, he reasoned that the safest way to avoid that calling was simply
- 2:15to avoid becoming a Christian.
- 2:18If you've ever seen someone do that, avoid surrender because they feared what obedience
- 2:22might cost.
- 2:24Torrey battled conviction.
- 2:26He rejected sermons.
- 2:27He dismissed the arguments.
- 2:29But there was one thing he could not escape, his mother's prayers.
- 2:34One night, overwhelmed with disappointment and the turmoil inside, Torrey sprang from
- 2:40his bed intending to take his own life.
- 2:44But in that dark, desperate moment, God met him.
- 2:48Instead of ending his life, he surrendered it.
- 2:52He later testified,
- 2:54Though I had gotten over sermons and arguments and churches and everything else, I could
- 2:58not get over my mother's prayers.
- 3:01Friend, never underestimate what God can do through faithful prayer.
- 3:07You may not see immediate results.
- 3:09You may not live to see the harvest.
- 3:12Torrey's mother would die just two years after his conversion.
- 3:16But heaven keeps record of every tear, every plea.
- 3:20James 5.16 says the effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
- 3:27Keep praying.
- 3:28God is working even when you cannot see it.
- 3:32Torrey's surrender did not end his struggles.
- 3:35For several years, he wrestled intellectually with the authority and inerrancy of Scripture.
- 3:41Could the Bible truly be trusted as the very Word of God?
- 3:45He examined it.
- 3:47He questioned it.
- 3:48He weighed it.
- 3:49And finally, by faith, he accepted that the Bible is exactly what it claims to be, God's
- 3:56perfect book.
- 3:58That decision shaped the rest of his life.
- 4:01From that point forward, Torrey preached the Word with conviction.
- 4:06He wrote extensively in defense of it.
- 4:08He saw thousands come to Christ through its power.
- 4:12Here is the lesson.
- 4:13Your view of Scripture will determine the direction of your life.
- 4:18If it is merely an inspirational book, it will lightly influence you.
- 4:22If it is truly authoritative, it will govern you.
- 4:26And Torrey chose to stand on it, and God used him mightily.
- 4:31He served as pastor, educator, evangelist, and author.
- 4:36He became the first president of Moody Bible Institute.
- 4:39He pastored churches in Chicago and Los Angeles.
- 4:43He traveled the world preaching Christ, seeing over 100,000 conversions.
- 4:48In Australia alone, it is said that 20,000 trusted Christ during his meetings.
- 4:54But perhaps his greatest impact wasn't in numbers or in public ministry.
- 5:00It was in integrity.
- 5:03His public ministry and private life matched.
- 5:08His daughter once wrote something remarkable.
- 5:11She said, if I were not a believer, the very consistency of my father's life would force
- 5:17me to become a believer.
- 5:19That may be one of the highest compliments a Christian can receive.
- 5:24Integrity is not perfection.
- 5:26It is consistency.
- 5:29It is walking with God in public and in private.
- 5:33It is being the same person at home that you are in the pulpit.
- 5:37And that is where Proverbs 20 verse 7 comes alive.
- 5:41The Bible says, the just man walketh in his integrity.
- 5:45His children are blessed after him.
- 5:48Torrey's life blessed more than crowds.
- 5:51It blessed his family.
- 5:52It strengthened institutions.
- 5:54It extended the ministry of others.
- 5:57He was not trying to build a platform.
- 5:59He was striving for faithfulness.
- 6:02What stands out about R.A. Torrey is not just what he accomplished, but what he overcame
- 6:08a resistant heart, a suicidal night, intellectual doubt, and through it all, prayer, surrender
- 6:17and steady obedience.
- 6:19So let me ask you, is there someone you need to keep praying for?
- 6:24Is there an area where you need to settle your confidence in the Word of God?
- 6:30Is your private life strengthening or undermining your public ministry?
- 6:35Torrey was not a great man because he was flawless.
- 6:38He was a great man because he was faithful.
- 6:41He walked with integrity.
- 6:43And long after his voice fell silent, his life still continues to bless others.
- 6:49Friend, we serve the same master he served.
- 6:52We hold the same book he defended.
- 6:54We approach the same throne of grace where his dear mother poured out her prayers.
- 7:00May we, by God's grace, be found faithful.
- 7:04Thank you for traveling with me today.
