- 0:02Speaker 1: The Year of the Rookie continues. Happy Connor Griffin debut
- 0:07Speaker 1: day to those who celebrate, I know someone celebrating right here.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Should we do crattats before we even start the show today,
- 0:17Speaker 1: because it's so obvious?
- 0:19Speaker 2: I mean, is there any other iconic hat that worn
- 0:21Speaker 2: forward or backwards like a buffoon is better than the
- 0:26Speaker 2: Pirates throwback? I think it's like seventies when they were
- 0:31Speaker 2: like legit. And for everybody on Twitter that came after
- 0:35Speaker 2: me about my Connor Griffin, I was actually I was
- 0:39Speaker 2: actually in favor of this the Pirates. I feel like
- 0:41Speaker 2: did a really good job. Good job Pirates. Not everything
- 0:46Speaker 2: that is said about the Pirates on the show is
- 0:49Speaker 2: slander and hate. Okay, so great job Pirates. You've got
- 0:53Speaker 2: extra value out of not disclosing when you're going to
- 0:58Speaker 2: sign Connor Griffin to an extension like everybody else would do.
- 1:03Speaker 1: I think we're better off doing days when Twitter doesn't
- 1:08Speaker 1: come after krats AJ and we can ask him why
- 1:12Speaker 1: people are not coming after him.
- 1:15Speaker 3: I mean, I don't know Twitter. Twitter people are funny
- 1:18Speaker 3: whether they come after or not. I mean, who cares,
- 1:22Speaker 3: but listen, uh, it is Connor Griffin Day. It's gonna
- 1:27Speaker 3: make his major leque. Deb I can't wait to see
- 1:29Speaker 3: how the kid does. And if he goes over in
- 1:31Speaker 3: the first game, then let's not everyone think he should
- 1:34Speaker 3: still be in Triple A. Okay, And yes, they will
- 1:37Speaker 3: announce an extension soon. It's just funny to me that
- 1:40Speaker 3: you know they're not they're not talking about her, or
- 1:42Speaker 3: they haven't announced it, even though people are reporting that
- 1:45Speaker 3: it's very close to being done. They don't want to
- 1:47Speaker 3: do that because they don't want to lose the draft
- 1:48Speaker 3: picks and all that stuff. This whole thing is is
- 1:51Speaker 3: crazy to me. I'm just happy that Connor Griffin is there.
- 1:53Speaker 3: He's one of their best players. He should be on
- 1:55Speaker 3: the Pirates and he should be trying to help them win,
- 1:57Speaker 3: not not manipulate when he comes up up and not
- 2:00Speaker 3: all that stuff.
- 2:02Speaker 1: And we'll hopefully get to more of that later. One
- 2:04Speaker 1: more thing before we charge. I saw some comments say
- 2:08Speaker 1: that the Pirates were just trying to hook up Indianapolis
- 2:13Speaker 1: with a week with Connor Griffin. But you know what's
- 2:17Speaker 1: funny to me, they sounded serious. They were like, yeah,
- 2:21Speaker 1: some teams make sure that their prospects get to each level,
- 2:24Speaker 1: even for a little bit it's part of being good
- 2:27Speaker 1: partners to their affiliates.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Okay, that might be true, but we're not making big
- 2:35Speaker 2: league decisions based on what level they should be at.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Like there might be some like I know big leaguers
- 2:42Speaker 2: sometimes are encouraged to go rehab at different places. But
- 2:47Speaker 2: that's not I let's put it this way. I'll make
- 2:52Speaker 2: a call. I'll text to see if teams actually have
- 2:54Speaker 2: those decisions because I one thing I did do. I
- 2:58Speaker 2: spent a lot of time in the minor leagues. So
- 3:00Speaker 2: Connor Griffin did not get sent to Triple A so
- 3:02Speaker 2: that Indianapolis could have six nice gates at the Indianapolis
- 3:08Speaker 2: indian Stadium Victory Field.
- 3:12Speaker 1: You do that for us, You do some homework. Let
- 3:13Speaker 1: me know how much say they have? I'm assuming it's
- 3:17Speaker 1: just about zero. All right, let's charge. Let's charge. What
- 3:23Speaker 1: do we have here? Aj Carter Jensen, who is a
- 3:26Speaker 1: rookie promising player for the Royals, their catcher of the future,
- 3:31Speaker 1: showing up very late to the ballpark a five to
- 3:34Speaker 1: one loss for the Royals. He was supposed to catch. Instead,
- 3:36Speaker 1: it's Salvador Perez, the thirty six year old vet who
- 3:39Speaker 1: takes over. He was scratched quote. I didn't wake up
- 3:43Speaker 1: to my alarm, slept through it. Don't really have an excuse,
- 3:45Speaker 1: nor should I. It sucks it happens. I feel like
- 3:47Speaker 1: I let teammates coaches down, just learn from it, and
- 3:49Speaker 1: just know it won't happen again. Does this happen often?
- 3:54Speaker 3: I I don't think I've ever heard of this at
- 3:57Speaker 3: the big league level, honestly. I mean there's been times
- 4:00Speaker 3: where in TRIPAA where we almost missed planes because the
- 4:03Speaker 3: planes were like at four in the morning, but that
- 4:06Speaker 3: you had a roommate at the time and to check
- 4:09Speaker 3: on people. So I've never, honestly, at the big league level.
- 4:12Speaker 3: I'm sure it's happened before. I've never heard of this
- 4:15Speaker 3: because I listen. I was always freaked out when there
- 4:18Speaker 3: was a day game, and I listened. I went out
- 4:20Speaker 3: before day games and had some adult beverages and got
- 4:24Speaker 3: back to the hotel two, three in the morning.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Whatever.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Fine, But I had like a wake up call. I
- 4:30Speaker 3: had an alarm set I told people to call me.
- 4:33Speaker 3: There was no way, and plus I never really slept
- 4:36Speaker 3: when I knew that I had to be up. I
- 4:37Speaker 3: still don't sleep if I know I have to be
- 4:38Speaker 3: up super early. I don't sleep. I'm checking my phone,
- 4:41Speaker 3: I'm checking the time. I'm checking my watch every I'm
- 4:44Speaker 3: like this, Oh what time is it?
- 4:45Speaker 2: Boop?
- 4:45Speaker 3: Oh it's oh okay, I got two more hours. Okay,
- 4:48Speaker 3: I can go back to sleep. It's a constant thing.
- 4:50Speaker 3: So I've never heard of this. I'm sure it's happened before.
- 4:52Speaker 3: But hopefully he learns from it. And I love what
- 4:54Speaker 3: Vinnie said. I thought Vinnie nailed it.
- 4:57Speaker 2: I think I've seen it happen in spring training Ryan Roberts,
- 5:01Speaker 2: who became tatman after his time with the Diamondbacks. But
- 5:07Speaker 2: he slept through his alarm and we were already out
- 5:10Speaker 2: on field three doing whatever you do in spring training,
- 5:14Speaker 2: and he's rolling in. Taxi dropped him off, so he
- 5:18Speaker 2: got to run sprints on the treadmill for an hour
- 5:21Speaker 2: the next morning at six in the morning. So, yes,
- 5:24Speaker 2: it's happened in this case in the big leagues. The
- 5:28Speaker 2: fact that he was getting a start like Salvado Perez.
- 5:31Speaker 2: While he doesn't play as much as when I played
- 5:33Speaker 2: with Salvado Perez, he still plays a lot. And it
- 5:36Speaker 2: was your chance to start. Carter Janssen. I bet he
- 5:39Speaker 2: doesn't make the same mistake. I was twenty three years
- 5:42Speaker 2: old in short season ball and my roommate and I shoot,
- 5:47Speaker 2: Richmond Richmond. I forget what his first name was, but anyway,
- 5:51Speaker 2: Paul Richmond. We both slept through our alarm and they
- 5:55Speaker 2: started the bus up. And it was one of those
- 5:57Speaker 2: hotels that was like we were on the first floor
- 5:59Speaker 2: but or below ground, and I could hear the bus
- 6:02Speaker 2: start up, and we both jumped out of bed, got
- 6:05Speaker 2: our suitcases, and we're on the bus in like seven minutes.
- 6:08Speaker 2: That's the closest I've ever been to missing a bus,
- 6:11Speaker 2: or never sleeping through a game, or getting to a
- 6:15Speaker 2: game too late.
- 6:17Speaker 3: Spring training is different than a big league game. I
- 6:21Speaker 3: mean spring training. Yeah, I've seen guys oversleep in spring training. That, okay,
- 6:25Speaker 3: I get it. That's a little different, but not a
- 6:27Speaker 3: game like a big league game. I've seen guys rolling
- 6:30Speaker 3: late to spring training. I've never seen a guy usually also,
- 6:34Speaker 3: there's somebody calling him, somebody calling his apartment, somebody checking
- 6:37Speaker 3: on him, whoever that person is. I mean, this game
- 6:40Speaker 3: was at one o'clock. It's not like it was at
- 6:41Speaker 3: seven in the morning. So listen. And the biggest thing
- 6:45Speaker 3: for me is when people don't understand is when when
- 6:48Speaker 3: Vinnie Paspentino said Salvi had to go from being the
- 6:51Speaker 3: DH to be in the the catcher. There was a
- 6:54Speaker 3: huge difference as someone that was a catcher and then
- 6:56Speaker 3: all of a sudden, Oh I got to play or
- 6:58Speaker 3: not DH. If I'm schedu DH, it's a huge difference
- 7:01Speaker 3: in prep. It's a huge difference in mental prep. It's
- 7:04Speaker 3: a huge difference from any everything. I remember when I
- 7:06Speaker 3: played with Barry Bonds, Barry Bonds the day games that
- 7:08Speaker 3: have two different lineups. If he played, I wasn't in.
- 7:11Speaker 3: If he didn't play, I was in the lineup, and
- 7:13Speaker 3: I had to wait for Barry to make that decision.
- 7:15Speaker 3: But you still have to get ready for the game
- 7:16Speaker 3: like you're catching. So that was a big thing, and
- 7:20Speaker 3: I agree with what Vinnie said. You know, it was
- 7:21Speaker 3: a big thing for Salve. Salve handled it of course
- 7:23Speaker 3: like a pro. He was ready to go. But yeah,
- 7:26Speaker 3: I just I've never seen this, and I'm glad that
- 7:28Speaker 3: that Vinnie said what he said. He said everything right. Jensen.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Jensen came out after said everything right. They'll move on.
- 7:34Speaker 3: But I just never seen this.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Let's get Vinnie passed beintween a past Quentino's quote. This
- 7:41Speaker 1: is what he said about the incident.
- 7:44Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, you got a thirty six year old
- 7:45Speaker 4: catcher who's preparing to DH today and then his work
- 7:48Speaker 4: gets a little rocked that an hour and a half
- 7:50Speaker 4: before the game, he's not going to be not gonna
- 7:53Speaker 4: be dhing.
- 7:54Speaker 2: So your credit to Salvy today.
- 7:56Speaker 3: For being ready.
- 8:00Speaker 4: First and foremost, we're glad Carter's okay, right, I mean
- 8:02Speaker 4: that was kind of the initial thought when you're trying
- 8:04Speaker 4: to get ahold of his parents and everything like that
- 8:07Speaker 4: and just make sure that he's okay. But once you
- 8:08Speaker 4: find out he's okay, it's like, all right, it's a
- 8:10Speaker 4: growing moment. He's really young. There are some things that
- 8:14Speaker 4: cannot happen, and that's one of them. So he's gonna
- 8:17Speaker 4: have to wear it on the chin the same way
- 8:19Speaker 4: anybody would have to. So it can't happen, and you know,
- 8:24Speaker 4: hopefully it doesn't happen again. But it's one of those
- 8:27Speaker 4: things that you just you can't afford mistakes like that
- 8:29Speaker 4: in this game. So just gotta move forward the best
- 8:33Speaker 4: that he can. I know, I know he feels really bad.
- 8:36Speaker 4: I know that it was not his favorite drive. To
- 8:38Speaker 4: the field this morning, but it wasn't our favorite morning either,
- 8:41Speaker 4: trying to figure out what was going on. So you know,
- 8:43Speaker 4: he'll learn from it and grow up a little bit,
- 8:45Speaker 4: and you know we're here for him. Though it's not
- 8:47Speaker 4: like where anybody's you know, mad at him. Things happen,
- 8:50Speaker 4: but you gotta learn from mistakes like that and maybe
- 8:53Speaker 4: get another alarm clock or.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Something at home.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Great last line there, Then he's a pro.
- 9:00Speaker 3: So by the way, I guarantee his teammates gifted him
- 9:02Speaker 3: alarm clocks. There's somebody who told you there was Vinnie
- 9:05Speaker 3: or Salvey or one of his teammates. I promise you
- 9:08Speaker 3: went to the clubhouse guy and said, hey, as a joke,
- 9:11Speaker 3: we need to get this guy a bunch of alarm clocks.
- 9:12Speaker 3: And he probably has forty alarm clocks now sitting in
- 9:15Speaker 3: his locker off for this road trip. But he'll never
- 9:18Speaker 3: do it again. He'll learn his lesson and he'll move on.
- 9:21Speaker 3: But yeah, it's just Vinnie handled it like a pro.
- 9:23Speaker 3: The Royals handle like a pro. It's just something I'd
- 9:25Speaker 3: never seen before.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Being late. Being late is not a like, it's not
- 9:29Speaker 2: a thing like you're to the point where when I
- 9:33Speaker 2: saw this and it made I told my wife, I'm like,
- 9:38Speaker 2: oh great, I'm gonna probably have a bad dream about
- 9:40Speaker 2: being late to the field, because that was my reoccurring
- 9:43Speaker 2: dream in baseball, was being late to the field, whether
- 9:47Speaker 2: it was not necessarily showing up late, but like, I'm
- 9:51Speaker 2: going out to stretch, I'm going out and starting, and
- 9:53Speaker 2: I looked down and both my socks are different colors.
- 9:57Speaker 2: So I'm like, okay, it's fine, it's fine. Six thirty
- 10:00Speaker 2: five and when I got to be out there for
- 10:01Speaker 2: seven o'clock game, and so I thought last night, after
- 10:05Speaker 2: hearing this happened during the day yesterday, I'm like, oh great,
- 10:08Speaker 2: now here comes my being late to a baseball game
- 10:11Speaker 2: dream coming back. But fortunately it's okay, Carter I slept
- 10:15Speaker 2: fine tonight.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Okay, so wait, but happened. Some guys showed up late consistently.
- 10:21Speaker 1: It's just that it's before game time. I mean, Jaci Olpuige,
- 10:25Speaker 1: I know, had tons of issues with this where he
- 10:27Speaker 1: was showing up super late. Didn't even like yeah, but
- 10:30Speaker 1: he never missed a game.
- 10:31Speaker 3: He never you're.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Saying through the game time, I played.
- 10:35Speaker 3: With guys that were late to stretch or late to
- 10:37Speaker 3: be or stuff like that, and that happens. What, there's
- 10:40Speaker 3: a million different reasons. Sometimes you don't even know. Guys
- 10:42Speaker 3: have something happen with their family and you're like, oh, man,
- 10:45Speaker 3: why was this guy late today, and then you come
- 10:46Speaker 3: to find out there was like their kid was sick
- 10:49Speaker 3: or I mean, there's been times where guys have been sick,
- 10:51Speaker 3: they've missed stuff. I mean I played with Octavio Dotel
- 10:54Speaker 3: who was notoriously late to everything, and he kind of
- 10:57Speaker 3: made a joke out of it, but he never missed
- 10:58Speaker 3: a game five minutes before stretch and stuff like that.
- 11:02Speaker 3: That wasn't a big deal. I mean, yeah, annoyed people,
- 11:05Speaker 3: but it wasn't the end all be all, like missing
- 11:07Speaker 3: an actual game time. That's where I've never seen. That's
- 11:10Speaker 3: the thing I've never seen.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Lasting's Millage. I got two stories. Last Thing's Millage. When
- 11:15Speaker 2: he came over to Pittsburgh. He told me a story
- 11:18Speaker 2: that his first week in the big leagues whatever, it
- 11:21Speaker 2: was his first day off. The night before, the manager
- 11:24Speaker 2: told him, you get the day off tomorrow, and he had.
- 11:28Speaker 2: I don't know if you remember when Lasting's Millage made
- 11:30Speaker 2: his debut, it was like big hit high fives going
- 11:33Speaker 2: down the line going back out to the outfield, like
- 11:35Speaker 2: there was a lot of fanfare, and they told me
- 11:38Speaker 2: you had the day off, and it was like six
- 11:41Speaker 2: point thirty and they were calling him, they were like, bro,
- 11:43Speaker 2: where are you. He was like, you guys gave me
- 11:46Speaker 2: the day off. So whether that was a true story
- 11:49Speaker 2: or he was trying to be funny, and I've I've
- 11:51Speaker 2: believed it for the last fifteen sixteen years now. It
- 11:55Speaker 2: was a story that made me laugh. And Roy Holliday
- 11:57Speaker 2: was also another one. Never ever saw him late. When
- 12:01Speaker 2: you're talking late, like it's time to prepare. He's already
- 12:03Speaker 2: at the field, sweating before other people are for his
- 12:06Speaker 2: before his start, and I show up at the field
- 12:10Speaker 2: and Doc's not there yet. A day started here on
- 12:13Speaker 2: ninety five, which is the main highway that runs right
- 12:16Speaker 2: outside of Citizens Bank Park, there was an accident blocking
- 12:21Speaker 2: all three lanes or two lanes whatever it is there
- 12:24Speaker 2: and they had to send a police car to go
- 12:28Speaker 2: into traffic the opposite direction get him around traffic to
- 12:33Speaker 2: be able to get him to the game in time
- 12:36Speaker 2: for his start.
- 12:38Speaker 1: There was a little bit of a setback for Carlos Rodan.
- 12:42Speaker 1: It's never good, but right now the Yankees are rolling.
- 12:45Speaker 1: They're in good shape with their rotation. Rodan called his
- 12:47Speaker 1: hamstring tightness a bump in the road and said he
- 12:49Speaker 1: hopes to throw from a mount tomorrow. If that goes well,
- 12:52Speaker 1: his next step could be a rehab assignment. So this
- 12:54Speaker 1: news came this morning, So just a drop of the speedbump.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Aj Yankees pitching looks really good.
- 13:02Speaker 3: Yank's look really good so far. It's early, but they
- 13:05Speaker 3: look good so far.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Scoring runs, hitting dingers, and the rotation is doing quite
- 13:12Speaker 2: fine without Rodin and Cole. Imagine when they get those
- 13:16Speaker 2: guys back.
- 13:17Speaker 1: Sheepersh Cam Schlitzler looks like he's gonna be an ace.
- 13:22Speaker 3: It looks, yeah, he looks. And I love that he
- 13:25Speaker 3: talks trash too.
- 13:27Speaker 2: They were saying, they were saying that that cutter is new.
- 13:30Speaker 2: But to me, it just looks like his fastball that
- 13:34Speaker 2: he's just getting around a little bit, which I thought
- 13:36Speaker 2: he did last year. But they're saying it's new. Whatever
- 13:39Speaker 2: it is, it's when you're blowing dudes away with a
- 13:42Speaker 2: ball that's going that much right to left, it's it's
- 13:47Speaker 2: pretty impressive.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Well, Kratz, your boy. Johann Oviedo did not look good
- 13:53Speaker 1: the other day, and now he is on the ail
- 13:56Speaker 1: with a right elbow streen. I think he's gonna visit
- 13:59Speaker 1: one of the doomed to see if there's worse news
- 14:03Speaker 1: I don't.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Want to see. You don't want to see right elbow
- 14:05Speaker 2: strain or flexer strain or oh it's just this in
- 14:10Speaker 2: the elbow. You never want to see it. So hopefully
- 14:13Speaker 2: he gets good news. But when you have an outing
- 14:17Speaker 2: like that where your command's not there, your velocity is
- 14:20Speaker 2: not consistent. How long was he dealing with it? Sucks?
- 14:26Speaker 1: Yeah, he had TJ in December of twenty twenty three.
- 14:29Speaker 1: You remember he missed all of twenty four, came back
- 14:30Speaker 1: at some point last year, showed some signs. Keith Meister
- 14:35Speaker 1: is the visit for him coming up. And he was
- 14:38Speaker 1: great on our show AJA when we had him. But
- 14:40Speaker 1: that is not the doctor that you want to be
- 14:42Speaker 1: asked to see.
- 14:45Speaker 3: No, that is not the guy meister Andrews. Job used
- 14:48Speaker 3: to be job remember job, yep, elect not the guys.
- 14:54Speaker 3: Those names are the names when you're a player, you
- 14:56Speaker 3: don't want to hear that. Hey, I got to go
- 14:57Speaker 3: see those guys because he usually doesn't end very well, no,
- 15:01Speaker 3: it does not.
- 15:01Speaker 1: One more roster move for the Al East. This with
- 15:05Speaker 1: the Rays. Garret Clevenger good reliever, right calf tightness hits
- 15:10Speaker 1: the shelf hunter Biggie gets.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Called biggie, Biggie, Biggie. Can't you see you just got
- 15:17Speaker 2: we called to this show?
- 15:19Speaker 1: Wow, that's good analysis. The Rais are two and four,
- 15:23Speaker 1: by the way to start the year. The Yeah, in
- 15:26Speaker 1: a tough division. They're quite blah aside from Junior Camonaro
- 15:32Speaker 1: and Yandi.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Yanni's gonna have a nice year, go for a batting title,
- 15:37Speaker 2: Get traded, get traded.
- 15:39Speaker 1: Yeah, this is the year he gets traded. This trade deadline.
- 15:41Speaker 3: You think this is the one that finally happens.
- 15:43Speaker 2: I do. I mean it's been a while. Yeah, he's
- 15:47Speaker 2: he's been on the block for a minute.
- 15:50Speaker 1: If they're in bad shape like it, I think they
- 15:52Speaker 1: will be as in, not a terrible team, but not
- 15:55Speaker 1: a team in the playoff mix. I think this is
- 15:57Speaker 1: the year where they'll try to capitalize. The Rays are
- 15:59Speaker 1: so good at making sure that they take a guy
- 16:01Speaker 1: in a good spot, stock is high, and they trade
- 16:03Speaker 1: him away. Yandi's coming off a great year. If he
- 16:05Speaker 1: looks good again in the beginning of this season, you
- 16:07Speaker 1: trade him to a team that needs some offense, there
- 16:09Speaker 1: will be plenty of teams that need offense better than
- 16:19Speaker 1: box scorers. Will just wrap up what we saw on
- 16:22Speaker 1: Thursday before we move on to these Friday games. So
- 16:25Speaker 1: the Mets lost to the Giants, and they've got a
- 16:28Speaker 1: number of issues to address here. First of all, most
- 16:31Speaker 1: of their new acquisitions are off to a slow start.
- 16:33Speaker 1: It's very common, but we're only dealing with a small
- 16:36Speaker 1: sample size right now. And I know we mentioned yesterday
- 16:39Speaker 1: how they were chasing, maybe more than usual outside of
- 16:42Speaker 1: the zone with runners in scoring position. Again, it's early
- 16:44Speaker 1: in the season. The guy that got picked on last
- 16:47Speaker 1: night was Marcus Simon after Francisco Lindor was picked on
- 16:50Speaker 1: the night before for a couple of gaffes that he
- 16:53Speaker 1: made that were uncommon for him. So for Simeon, on
- 16:56Speaker 1: a particular pop up, he whiffed and the probability was
- 17:01Speaker 1: ninety percent. We're showing it right now, AJ, isn't that
- 17:05Speaker 1: Louise Roberts.
- 17:06Speaker 3: Paul, Yes, yes, I don't know why Simeon's getting in
- 17:09Speaker 3: trouble with this. That's Louise Roberts ball. He's standing right there,
- 17:12Speaker 3: Papa priority. You do it every day in spring training,
- 17:14Speaker 3: every day, especially in Arizona when it was no sun,
- 17:17Speaker 3: no clouds in the sky and Wendy blowing forty. Coaches
- 17:20Speaker 3: be like, ah, we're gonna do Papa priority guys, and
- 17:23Speaker 3: everyone's like, oh, because we know someone's gonna miss there,
- 17:26Speaker 3: We're gonna miss a couple, someone's gonna lose one in
- 17:28Speaker 3: the sun. And then the coaches get to yell at
- 17:30Speaker 3: you that you're not concentrating. So I thought that was
- 17:33Speaker 3: Louise Roberts Paul. He easily could have got there. Listen,
- 17:35Speaker 3: Simeon's taken the hate heat for that, but I feel
- 17:38Speaker 3: like that wasn't. He actually went a really long way
- 17:40Speaker 3: to even get a glove on it.
- 17:42Speaker 2: Please say something, please. One of my biggest pet peeves
- 17:46Speaker 2: is when guys come from travel programs or other schools
- 17:50Speaker 2: and they're like ball when the balls in the air.
- 17:53Speaker 2: One time, to me, Luise Robert has to call him off. Now,
- 17:57Speaker 2: did Marcus Simeon wave him off? Yes, he did everything
- 18:01Speaker 2: he's supposed to do. As an infielder, you're supposed to
- 18:03Speaker 2: run as hard as you can to get a ball,
- 18:05Speaker 2: and you'll see at the end of the play. Yes,
- 18:08Speaker 2: he waves them off right here, he waves them off.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Louise Robert, that's your ball. Marcus Simmy will just keep
- 18:16Speaker 2: running and just go by the ball. He'll make the turn.
- 18:19Speaker 2: It won't even be a play like he has to
- 18:21Speaker 2: take ownership. It's center field, then it's the corner outfielders,
- 18:26Speaker 2: then it's the shortstop. Then it's a second baseman, and
- 18:28Speaker 2: it's a corner infielders. Pitchers beat it and then the
- 18:32Speaker 2: catchers get anything that stays close to the dirt.
- 18:38Speaker 1: Let's move to the pitching. Sean Mania started to hear
- 18:42Speaker 1: in the bullpen. He picked up some significant innings last
- 18:45Speaker 1: night in relief of David Peterson, seventy four pitches for Manaiah.
- 18:50Speaker 1: The problem for him in spring training was the velocity.
- 18:53Speaker 1: It has not picked up for him. It's from John Harper,
- 18:56Speaker 1: who covers the team every day. He said he was
- 18:58Speaker 1: eighty nine to ninety one in that seventy four pitch,
- 19:01Speaker 1: outing four hits, including the Devers homer, two walks, and
- 19:04Speaker 1: you had a fan who commented about how the Mets
- 19:07Speaker 1: are paying fifty five million dollars per season to Manaya,
- 19:11Speaker 1: Clay Holmes and Frankie Montas, while the Yankees during the
- 19:16Speaker 1: same free agency period a couple of years ago signed
- 19:19Speaker 1: Max Freed and they're paying him twenty seven mil per year.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Obviously that deal is for a longer period of time,
- 19:25Speaker 1: but the debate does rage on with signing more proven
- 19:30Speaker 1: aces or mixing and matching and looking for gold. I
- 19:34Speaker 1: don't know if Manaia is quite the example you can use,
- 19:36Speaker 1: since they did have gold a couple years ago. AJ,
- 19:39Speaker 1: But your thoughts on what we're seeing from Manya right now,
- 19:43Speaker 1: I mean, he's in his mid thirties. You hope you
- 19:44Speaker 1: gets the velocity back, as they signed him for big
- 19:47Speaker 1: money and they'd like him to be a contributor in
- 19:49Speaker 1: the rotation eventually. But also the bigger picture of how
- 19:53Speaker 1: the Mets have been looking at paying pitchers long term.
- 19:56Speaker 1: You know, we'll see what happens with Freddy Peralta. I
- 19:59Speaker 1: actually thought that they would. I've gotten an extension done
- 20:01Speaker 1: with him in spring training. No word on that, so
- 20:04Speaker 1: it might not happen during the season for them. But
- 20:07Speaker 1: we have learned that David Stearns is very, very firm
- 20:12Speaker 1: about the way that he looks at starting pitching long term.
- 20:14Speaker 1: It does not sound like he believes in the five
- 20:16Speaker 1: to six seven year plus deals for starters.
- 20:21Speaker 3: I just, I mean, I have one question for how
- 20:22Speaker 3: many World Series has David Sterns won?
- 20:26Speaker 1: Zero?
- 20:28Speaker 3: I just I don't know. I just I'm asking that,
- 20:31Speaker 3: And I don't mean that as a shot at David Stearns,
- 20:33Speaker 3: but he hasn't won any. And the Frankie Montos, I
- 20:35Speaker 3: think people on here question that as soon as it
- 20:38Speaker 3: came out. Did we not like, man, how does this
- 20:40Speaker 3: guy keep getting sixteen seventeen eighteen million dollars a year
- 20:43Speaker 3: when he's hurt every year? And he got hurt again, right,
- 20:46Speaker 3: and then the Mania thing. He was really good for
- 20:48Speaker 3: him at the end of twenty four because remember they
- 20:52Speaker 3: beat the Mets, went and beat the Brewers, and they
- 20:55Speaker 3: beat the Phillies in the DS and then they went
- 20:57Speaker 3: to the LCS and lost the Dodgers in a great
- 20:59Speaker 3: series and manyah was their best picture. So the the
- 21:04Speaker 3: Mets he was a free agent. The Mets were thinking, man,
- 21:06Speaker 3: if this is the sham Maanayah we get, then he's
- 21:09Speaker 3: worth it. And nobody was complaining about the sham Mania deal.
- 21:12Speaker 3: Let's not forget when he signed that. Okay, so the
- 21:15Speaker 3: Manya thing. Then he gets hurt last year and I
- 21:17Speaker 3: think he hurt it? Did he not hurt? His shoulder
- 21:19Speaker 3: and shoulders are hard to come back from. Remember he
- 21:22Speaker 3: changed his arm angle and he dropped down start throwing
- 21:24Speaker 3: crossfire like Chris Sale. Well, he just hasn't bounced back.
- 21:28Speaker 3: So at the time when listen, I have no problem
- 21:31Speaker 3: with Seaman and i A signing the deal and the
- 21:32Speaker 3: Mets signing Shamanya. Well when he signed that he was
- 21:34Speaker 3: their best picture, he was their guy in the playoffs,
- 21:36Speaker 3: he was their number one. He was a free agent,
- 21:38Speaker 3: perfect timing, and then he unfortunately got hurt. So to
- 21:42Speaker 3: say Max reed or this or that, I mean mania,
- 21:46Speaker 3: listen to Montas one we can argue that we're blue
- 21:48Speaker 3: in the face. What was the other one was Manaiyah Vontas?
- 21:51Speaker 3: And who was the man.
- 21:52Speaker 1: Was pointing out Holmes? You know who had been good
- 21:55Speaker 1: last year?
- 21:55Speaker 3: This is the ra look at Holmes did last year.
- 21:57Speaker 3: Holmes was good, Holmes was under he was like a
- 22:01Speaker 3: top ten in era last year. I think Clay Holmes
- 22:04Speaker 3: has been fine. Clay Holmes hasn't.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Been pro No, I agree, And that's not a huge contract.
- 22:09Speaker 1: So that's the point is that you're going to hit
- 22:11Speaker 1: on some of those. It's just that your success rate
- 22:13Speaker 1: on deals like that is probably what, less than fifty percent?
- 22:17Speaker 1: And I think your success rate what Kratz you think?
- 22:20Speaker 1: I'm I'm on the money there, less than fifty percent
- 22:23Speaker 1: the money And those aren't cheap deals. I mean they're
- 22:26Speaker 1: mid range deals.
- 22:28Speaker 2: Yeah, but you can't I don't. I don't care what
- 22:30Speaker 2: the price is. I don't care when you're having a
- 22:33Speaker 2: fifty percent success rate. If that's the number we're setting
- 22:37Speaker 2: out there, you can't do that. You can't bring in
- 22:40Speaker 2: ten guys on those types of deals and expect it
- 22:44Speaker 2: to work out for your team. Did it really work
- 22:46Speaker 2: out really well in twenty four? Absolutely, seam and Iya
- 22:50Speaker 2: made the adjustment that I think he can make again.
- 22:53Speaker 2: I think he can get his velocity up. I feel
- 22:56Speaker 2: like maybe his arm angle has dropped a little bit lower,
- 22:59Speaker 2: and he doesn't look like he's quite as much crossfire
- 23:02Speaker 2: when you're looking at his extension point. Before he was
- 23:05Speaker 2: really far over here and he's really extending out now.
- 23:08Speaker 2: Just looks like it's low, but he's also coming out
- 23:10Speaker 2: of the pen. He's given the guys seventy four pitches
- 23:13Speaker 2: out of the bullpen. That's not ideal. But if your
- 23:16Speaker 2: success rate saying oh, this is our reclamation project, this
- 23:19Speaker 2: is our three year reclamation proh, we're going to turn
- 23:22Speaker 2: this reliever into a starter, and that success rate is
- 23:25Speaker 2: fifty percent, to me, it's that you're not going to
- 23:29Speaker 2: win a championship. I don't think David Sterens went from Milwaukee,
- 23:33Speaker 2: where he was doing really well, was brought in by
- 23:36Speaker 2: Steve Cohen to say we're gonna do really good. No,
- 23:40Speaker 2: they want to win a World Series and I just
- 23:42Speaker 2: don't think that that is a formula. And I think
- 23:47Speaker 2: they addressed that a little bit this year. They brought
- 23:49Speaker 2: in a number one in Freddy Peralta for one year.
- 23:52Speaker 2: But over the long term, can you do these three
- 23:56Speaker 2: year deals, capping out pitchers at three year deals and
- 24:01Speaker 2: win a World Series? I have a hard time believing.
- 24:04Speaker 2: Unless you get a young guy like Nolan McLain, unless
- 24:07Speaker 2: you get a unless somebody hits like you know another
- 24:11Speaker 2: you know, you bring in another prospect, or you always
- 24:13Speaker 2: trading your prospects to bring in the one year rental.
- 24:17Speaker 2: We'll see how it goes. Maybe David Sterns doesn't have
- 24:19Speaker 2: a long enough leash. If this team doesn't win.
- 24:23Speaker 1: It's rare that you see a team grow all top end,
- 24:27Speaker 1: playoff level starters. I've seen one team do it in
- 24:30Speaker 1: the past. What I can remember, ten fifteen years, I'm
- 24:34Speaker 1: talking about like four or five guys. I would say
- 24:36Speaker 1: the Mariners are probably the closest on the homegrown front
- 24:40Speaker 1: to being able to develop that many pitchers that are
- 24:42Speaker 1: that good in one organization during one winning window. I
- 24:45Speaker 1: can't really think of any other team. I'm sure there's
- 24:47Speaker 1: one or two I'm missing, but it is really rare.
- 24:50Speaker 1: Look and they still have.
- 24:52Speaker 3: Look at who won the World Series. Look at the
- 24:54Speaker 3: teams who won the World Series, the Dodgers, Glass now
- 24:57Speaker 3: Snow right, Yamamotoie Suzaki, right. And then before that, the
- 25:02Speaker 3: Astros brought Erlander. Right, they went out and got some guys.
- 25:05Speaker 3: They couldn't just have the homegrown guys who I mean,
- 25:09Speaker 3: just run through the list of the World Series champions,
- 25:12Speaker 3: the Rangers, right, they Evaldi into Grom and all those guys. Right,
- 25:15Speaker 3: It's not that easy to just develop these guys. You
- 25:20Speaker 3: have to go out and you have to spend money,
- 25:22Speaker 3: and honestly, you have to spend money on the big names.
- 25:25Speaker 3: Just the lower named guys are nice and it's cute
- 25:27Speaker 3: and trying to find victory in the margins. But at
- 25:29Speaker 3: the end of the day, I always go back to
- 25:32Speaker 3: the twenty sixteen Cubs and it's ten years after that.
- 25:34Speaker 3: Who did they go get Lester Lackey boom right to
- 25:38Speaker 3: leave the rotation? Guess what they did? They won a
- 25:40Speaker 3: World Series. Yes they had Hendrix, Yes they had you know,
- 25:43Speaker 3: Arita Arietta who they traded for. But they had to
- 25:46Speaker 3: go out and sign the big free agent starters to
- 25:48Speaker 3: put them over the top. That's usually how it has
- 25:49Speaker 3: to go.
- 25:52Speaker 1: Just mixing in some injury and rehab updates during the
- 25:55Speaker 1: TV commercial breaks here so you get more on YouTube.
- 25:58Speaker 1: Trey Savage working his way back from the old shoulder thing.
- 26:02Speaker 1: He slated to pitch three innings in a minor league
- 26:04Speaker 1: game for Class A Dunedin today. This according to Ben
- 26:07Speaker 1: Nicholson Smith. Blue Jays manager John Schneider estimated that he
- 26:11Speaker 1: would be back in the majors first, followed by Jose Burrios,
- 26:15Speaker 1: then Shane Bieber and aj We actually learned that Cody
- 26:20Speaker 1: Ponce is going to get more insight I think early
- 26:22Speaker 1: next week related to his injury. Sounds like it's going
- 26:25Speaker 1: to be a long term thing for him. But point is,
- 26:28Speaker 1: there is a very good starting rotation on the shelf
- 26:30Speaker 1: right now for the Blue Jays, and guys will be
- 26:32Speaker 1: working their way back.
- 26:34Speaker 3: Well, this was one of the worries about the every
- 26:36Speaker 3: team and people said, oh, the Blue Jays have too
- 26:39Speaker 3: many Remember they signed Scherzer and people said, oh, they
- 26:41Speaker 3: got too many starting pitching. You can never have too
- 26:43Speaker 3: much starting pitching. I'm sorry, and this is just more
- 26:45Speaker 3: proof of it. All the guys that have gone down
- 26:48Speaker 3: sadly for the Blue Jays, but they're all going to
- 26:49Speaker 3: come back at some point hopefully and make this team
- 26:52Speaker 3: stronger and give them a chance to win another World Series.
- 26:54Speaker 3: So this is why you build depth. But yeah, it's
- 26:56Speaker 3: been kind of a freak thing for the Blue Jays
- 26:58Speaker 3: as year.
- 27:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's a I think it's a tough start,
- 27:04Speaker 2: but it's also why you build depth. And I hope
- 27:07Speaker 2: they're not taking it too fast for any of these guys.
- 27:11Speaker 2: But the part with Shane Bieber coming back after Burrios,
- 27:15Speaker 2: that one's concerning to me because I thought Bieber would
- 27:18Speaker 2: be back before Housey Burrs but we shall see.
- 27:26Speaker 1: Yeah, and when you start thinking about the team from
- 27:29Speaker 1: a win total perspective, you might have to measure expectations.
- 27:32Speaker 1: I think this is still really a good team. But again,
- 27:34Speaker 1: the most common factor that you see after a deep
- 27:38Speaker 1: October run is a pitching staff going through it. This
- 27:41Speaker 1: is not uncommon at all, especially when it's the same staff.
- 27:45Speaker 1: The Dodgers were able to essentially have a completely different
- 27:47Speaker 1: looking starting rotation from twenty twenty four to twenty twenty five.
- 27:51Speaker 1: That helps for the Blue Jays. These are the names
- 27:54Speaker 1: that we saw through that long run last year. I'm
- 27:56Speaker 1: not saying that was the cause of the injury, but
- 27:59Speaker 1: it is common to see this stuff pop up. So
- 28:01Speaker 1: for them, is there a world where they have to
- 28:04Speaker 1: sneak in as a wildcard versus a division winner? I
- 28:07Speaker 1: mean they almost were in that case last year. They
- 28:09Speaker 1: won the division by basically a tiebreaker over the Yankees.
- 28:13Speaker 1: And bet MGM players will receive in any sport odds
- 28:15Speaker 1: boost token if you haven't already, You can use that
- 28:18Speaker 1: token ad of wager made up of bets from any
- 28:20Speaker 1: sport to your bet slip. And there's a lot of
- 28:21Speaker 1: sports to choose from. Right now, tis the season, activate
- 28:24Speaker 1: the token. If you win your wager with the token,
- 28:27Speaker 1: you get extra winnings with bonus dollars. Gambling problem, more concern,
- 28:31Speaker 1: there's help, Call one eight hundred gambler. Yeah, let's lap
- 28:45Speaker 1: a few things to do. We'll start with the rally sombrero.
- 28:48Speaker 1: This is something that I am excited to see AJ
- 28:52Speaker 1: sample when he is in Arlington. AJ, would you like
- 28:56Speaker 1: to describe.
- 28:58Speaker 3: When I go to Arlington at already in the words,
- 29:00Speaker 3: it's already been sent. All the new food, all the
- 29:02Speaker 3: parks I'm going to there, they will all be tried.
- 29:07Speaker 1: So so this is a sombrero that you can wear
- 29:10Speaker 1: on your head, but it contains a lot of nachos
- 29:14Speaker 1: and other fun stuff around it. So if you would
- 29:18Speaker 1: like to get food for the fam and you are
- 29:20Speaker 1: out of hands, this is helpful, right because you can
- 29:23Speaker 1: put this on your head and then still have two
- 29:25Speaker 1: hands to carry a lot more food and drinks.
- 29:31Speaker 3: I'm trying to figure out how you get the microphone,
- 29:33Speaker 3: put the little boo over over the sombrero, over the headset.
- 29:38Speaker 2: You gotta grind, you gotta work, you gotta you gotta
- 29:41Speaker 2: get it done. Like there's no reality is you got
- 29:44Speaker 2: to buy it for the person in front of you.
- 29:45Speaker 2: They have to wear it and so that when you're
- 29:47Speaker 2: sitting in your seat you can just lean forward like
- 29:50Speaker 2: you can't have it on your own head, and like, now,
- 29:53Speaker 2: that's that's tragic.
- 29:56Speaker 1: That's a great idea, right you. You talk to the
- 29:59Speaker 1: person in front of you and say, hey, I will
- 30:01Speaker 1: buy you a beer if you allow me to eat
- 30:04Speaker 1: my nachos from your head, and let me know how
- 30:07Speaker 1: that goes.
- 30:08Speaker 2: I wouldn't repeat it like that. I would think, you know,
- 30:12Speaker 2: different way, but hey, you know what, nachos are delicious?
- 30:15Speaker 2: Those look delicious. I'm gotting, I've got hungry right now.
- 30:19Speaker 1: All right, well, we'll see if this can help particular
- 30:22Speaker 1: your fancy. Dylan Cees is an artiste. He is pitching
- 30:25Speaker 1: right now, and we can talk about the weekend of
- 30:27Speaker 1: games too, but cease right now. With four K through
- 30:29Speaker 1: two innings, one run given up to the White Sox,
- 30:30Speaker 1: that's a tie game. And he gave this painting to
- 30:35Speaker 1: John Schneider. What do we think here, guys, It's gotta
- 30:38Speaker 1: look he's.
- 30:40Speaker 3: A renaissance man that Dylan sees. He's not your normal guy.
- 30:42Speaker 2: Man.
- 30:42Speaker 3: Have you seen his hair and his mustache thing he's
- 30:44Speaker 3: got going right now. He likes frisbee golf, and he's
- 30:47Speaker 3: into he's a he's a real life renaissance man. It's
- 30:51Speaker 3: a he's an interesting guy. Have you ever talked to him?
- 30:54Speaker 3: He's got a lot of thoughts in his head and
- 30:55Speaker 3: he's he's a fun guy to talk to.
- 30:57Speaker 1: He's a hobbyist.
- 30:59Speaker 2: Yeah, he's a hobbyman. He's not just locked only into baseball.
- 31:03Speaker 2: But I'm gonna go like art dealer, like people who
- 31:05Speaker 2: collect art, say I hate it, two million dollars, please,
- 31:10Speaker 2: I'll abuy it. I hate it, I don't love it
- 31:12Speaker 2: at all. Four million fine final price, four.
- 31:16Speaker 1: Million dollars, and then ten years later sell it.
- 31:21Speaker 2: For devil because I hated it when I bought it.
- 31:24Speaker 2: Now I love it. It's grown on me, it could
- 31:26Speaker 2: grow on you. Two six million dollars. That's it, no more.
- 31:32Speaker 1: That's good. And hey, Anthony Rendon, you can sorry, he's
- 31:37Speaker 1: going to catch strace here. You can love things outside
- 31:40Speaker 1: of baseball and still be really good at baseball, Dylan
- 31:43Speaker 1: Cees example one many interests in hobbies.
- 31:48Speaker 3: Still, that's the way good. I know we have other
- 31:50Speaker 3: things to get to, but can I just discuss this
- 31:52Speaker 3: with you guys. And I'm gonna bring this up as
- 31:54Speaker 3: a White Sox guy. And I'm not questioning Will Venable.
- 31:57Speaker 3: He knows his team way better than I do. But
- 31:58Speaker 3: Grant Taylor is one of your best levers and you're
- 32:01Speaker 3: counting on him to be a late inning guy. It's
- 32:03Speaker 3: a home opener. Why do you throw him in the
- 32:05Speaker 3: first inning and now he's out of the game in
- 32:07Speaker 3: the first inning. Yes, he had one inning and one strikeout,
- 32:10Speaker 3: no runs, but why is he then you have then
- 32:12Speaker 3: you back in with Sean Burke, who was, you know,
- 32:15Speaker 3: one of your better starters last year. Why do you
- 32:17Speaker 3: not just start Sean Burke? Why do you bring and
- 32:19Speaker 3: then you don't have him available? And the open has
- 32:21Speaker 3: been a problem for the White Sox already. I'm just
- 32:24Speaker 3: I don't know, I don't I don't understand that, But
- 32:26Speaker 3: maybe I'm way.
- 32:27Speaker 2: Off on that. The fans were electric to see one
- 32:31Speaker 2: of their high end relievers start the game. That's what
- 32:35Speaker 2: Chicago has been clamoring for since two thousand and five,
- 32:39Speaker 2: when Paul Kinerko and aj Prazinski and Jermaine Dye were
- 32:43Speaker 2: gracing the field Qualcomm X Stadium.
- 32:49Speaker 1: No.
- 32:49Speaker 2: This is not like, play the game out, play the
- 32:52Speaker 2: game out. There are more important things. Have him face
- 32:56Speaker 2: Vladimir Guerrero, Have him face Springer, have them faced. I'm
- 33:01Speaker 2: not sure who else the other top three in their
- 33:03Speaker 2: lineup is right now, have them face them in the
- 33:07Speaker 2: big spots when you know what, they're starting to get
- 33:09Speaker 2: into the rhythm of the game and it's a close
- 33:12Speaker 2: game because your starter Sean Burke is actually like pretty
- 33:16Speaker 2: good and he's had a really good outing and he's
- 33:18Speaker 2: had success for you. Let him stay in that role.
- 33:21Speaker 2: But no, you know what, we'll figure it out. We'll
- 33:24Speaker 2: change We'll change the game.
- 33:27Speaker 1: Yeah, bullpen game to welcome your fan base to the
- 33:30Speaker 1: twenty twenty six season.
- 33:32Speaker 2: So that's right. I don't get it.
- 33:33Speaker 3: I mean I can listen. I understand when guys are
- 33:36Speaker 3: openers and I get matchups early in the game, but
- 33:40Speaker 3: usually you don't throw your eighth inning guy, right. It's
- 33:43Speaker 3: usually a guy that matches up well that you know
- 33:45Speaker 3: is this sixth seventh inning. You're trying to just get
- 33:48Speaker 3: a matchup here and there, But it's not your like
- 33:49Speaker 3: guy you're counting on in the eighth inning to come
- 33:51Speaker 3: in and punch tickets.
- 33:54Speaker 2: Maybe they didn't think they were going to be winning.
- 33:56Speaker 2: Maybe they didn't think they were going to be winning,
- 33:57Speaker 2: so they're like, well, we got to bring them in
- 33:59Speaker 2: when we're still winning. We did all we could do.
- 34:02Speaker 2: We don't trust our players.
- 34:06Speaker 1: Most interesting thing I learned this week is that about
- 34:08Speaker 1: twenty years ago, seven eleven sponsored the White Sox and
- 34:11Speaker 1: they would start games at.
- 34:12Speaker 3: Seven to eleven and we never got a slurpeing machine,
- 34:15Speaker 3: which is bull crap. We fought a slurpey machine.
- 34:18Speaker 1: What days for life?
- 34:21Speaker 2: That would be electron
