- 0:02Speaker 1: Friday has arrived, a big day and a big weekend.
- 0:06Speaker 1: It is good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to the program. Here,
- 0:10Speaker 1: I'm thirteen under the Zone. We bring you the program
- 0:12Speaker 1: this afternoon from UFCU dishfog Field, prior to tonight's series
- 0:17Speaker 1: opener tonight in the Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown Rivalry
- 0:21Speaker 1: series Who Else with the Longhorns and Aggies, Texas against
- 0:25Speaker 1: Texas A and M. My name is Craig Wait glad
- 0:26Speaker 1: to have you with us this afternoon. Yes, there's a
- 0:29Speaker 1: lot to get to with regard to this series matchup
- 0:32Speaker 1: between Texas and Texas A and M, and we'll certainly
- 0:35Speaker 1: talk about that. We'll updateh on the SEC. There's a
- 0:39Speaker 1: game going on right now in the SEC. And then
- 0:43Speaker 1: additionally there'll be a lot more to discuss with regard
- 0:48Speaker 1: to the NBA Playoffs and hl Stanley Cup Playoffs, but
- 0:50Speaker 1: also clearly and obviously the twenty twenty five NFL Draft.
- 0:57Speaker 1: If you were tuned in yesterday to our program or
- 1:01Speaker 1: one of the many who made their way out to
- 1:03Speaker 1: Twin Peaks and Round Rocket I thirty five and Louis Henna,
- 1:08Speaker 1: we were glad to see you out there and of course,
- 1:10Speaker 1: we set the stage for that with a four hour
- 1:12Speaker 1: and fifty minute draft preview special that included not only
- 1:16Speaker 1: Cameron Parker with me, but also my cardboll Harge. Mark
- 1:20Speaker 1: Henry was with us as well, the two guys certainly
- 1:23Speaker 1: from the morning kickoff. Speaking of the morning kickoff, our
- 1:27Speaker 1: producer today is not Cameron Parker. He has some family
- 1:34Speaker 1: business attending to today. So you talk about a guy
- 1:36Speaker 1: doing the marathon shift, he did it yesterday as our
- 1:40Speaker 1: on site engineer. And here he is in the studio
- 1:45Speaker 1: after being at it in the morning, and here he
- 1:47Speaker 1: is the one and only Marcus Spears.
- 1:50Speaker 2: I think it's our first.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Time together doing a show together outside of that draft thing.
- 1:54Speaker 2: But I appreciate it. Marcus. How are you holding up today?
- 1:57Speaker 3: He am getting it in, getting it in, starting it
- 2:01Speaker 3: in the groove, you know how it is?
- 2:02Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, okay.
- 2:03Speaker 1: So I'm really curious to get your thoughts because I
- 2:07Speaker 1: know you follow the NFL very closely hard, you know,
- 2:11Speaker 1: get solicit your opinion on things. Also, for folks who
- 2:14Speaker 1: don't know about Marcus, it's a little bit different than
- 2:18Speaker 1: what we have with Cameron. You see, Cameron, of course
- 2:22Speaker 1: went to the university of Texas. But Cameron was originally
- 2:25Speaker 1: grew up in the Charlotte, North Carolina area, and Cameron
- 2:28Speaker 1: is a long suffering and I do mean long suffering
- 2:32Speaker 1: Dallas Cowboys fan of late of late, Houston Texans fans
- 2:37Speaker 1: have not had to suffer nearly as much, so it
- 2:40Speaker 1: hasn't been nearly as bad in terms of the suffering.
- 2:44Speaker 1: The Houston Texans fan base includes none other than our
- 2:48Speaker 1: producer today, Marcus Spears. You're an h Town native, aren't you?
- 2:52Speaker 1: Or originally a resident.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Born and raised Houston, Texas North Side? North Side? All right?
- 2:58Speaker 2: Where'd you go to high school? Want to? Uh?
- 3:01Speaker 3: Formally known high school as Forestbrook High School? It is
- 3:04Speaker 3: no longer in high school right now, it is junior
- 3:07Speaker 3: high school.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right, Forestbrook, That's right. Uh okay, yeah, I'm
- 3:13Speaker 1: I'm I'm quite familiar with that with all of my
- 3:17Speaker 1: whatever high school duties and the things that I that
- 3:20Speaker 1: I deal with.
- 3:21Speaker 2: But anyway, okay, so you're.
- 3:24Speaker 1: A Texans fan, yes, And the Texans traded out around
- 3:30Speaker 1: wanted made that made that deal with the Giants, and
- 3:33Speaker 1: that was after they had earlier made a deal with
- 3:35Speaker 1: the Browns and they were kind of swapping amid the
- 3:38Speaker 1: lake round draft choices, but the Texans traded out of it.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Not only did the Texans trade out of the first
- 3:44Speaker 1: round my team. I'm a Rams fan, and the Rams
- 3:46Speaker 1: traded out of the first round as well. So, UH,
- 3:50Speaker 1: I will tell you that I wasn't I really wasn't
- 3:53Speaker 1: that unhappy that that the Rams traded out of the
- 3:58Speaker 1: round because they picked up an X their first round
- 4:00Speaker 1: draft choice. I think they wanted to get Omari and Hampton,
- 4:04Speaker 1: the North Carolina running back and when the team crossed town, uh,
- 4:07Speaker 1: the carpetbackers known as the Los Angeles Chargers took uh,
- 4:12Speaker 1: took Omari and Hampton. Then I think the Rams kind
- 4:14Speaker 1: of re evaluated and said, all right, what else can
- 4:16Speaker 1: we do? And they made a deal with the Falcons
- 4:18Speaker 1: where they swapped basically into the second round or relatively
- 4:22Speaker 1: early in the second round, picked up another pick, and
- 4:25Speaker 1: they picked up the first round pick from the Falcons
- 4:28Speaker 1: for next year. So I think the Rams said, okay,
- 4:31Speaker 1: what about the Texas. How do you feel about the
- 4:33Speaker 1: Texans and the deal they made with the Giants? To UH,
- 4:37Speaker 1: I guess you might say build for on down the road.
- 4:41Speaker 3: My opinion is is if you can't get the guy
- 4:43Speaker 3: that you want, you might as well trade to pick
- 4:47Speaker 3: get as many access as uh, you know.
- 4:49Speaker 2: As you want.
- 4:50Speaker 3: And I think the guy that was looking at is
- 4:53Speaker 3: the is the the guard what's the guy named Donovan
- 4:58Speaker 3: Jackson which was selected right before them. I think they
- 5:02Speaker 3: probably had some interest in in uh in Golden because
- 5:06Speaker 3: they do need some some receiver help with UH with
- 5:11Speaker 3: tank deal going down last year, and Diggs also no
- 5:15Speaker 3: longer with the teams. But those two picks right before
- 5:19Speaker 3: the Texans they just basically had to trade down and
- 5:22Speaker 3: get more assets.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Yeah, it kind of took their interest out of it
- 5:26Speaker 1: right once, uh, you know, once the Garden went and
- 5:28Speaker 1: then I think, especially with Matthew Golden, there was a
- 5:30Speaker 1: lot of conversation that Matthew, of course, being an h
- 5:34Speaker 1: Town native, would have been a perfect fit for what
- 5:38Speaker 1: uh the Texans wanted, and once the Packers took him,
- 5:42Speaker 1: and how popular a pick was that at lambeau Field last.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Night, Yeah, they was. They erupted.
- 5:47Speaker 1: They were pretty excited about it, and Matthew was pretty
- 5:49Speaker 1: excited about it as well. So uh so you know,
- 5:53Speaker 1: so that happened, and and and I agree with you,
- 5:55Speaker 1: I think At that point, the Texans said, let's let's
- 5:58Speaker 1: see if we can improve for all on down the
- 6:00Speaker 1: road and made the deal with the Giants. The Giants
- 6:04Speaker 1: did exactly what they wanted to move in and then
- 6:07Speaker 1: all of the draft experts and the draft draft knicks,
- 6:11Speaker 1: both from the collegiate side of it and from the
- 6:14Speaker 1: NFL side of it, said, okay, the Giants are traded
- 6:17Speaker 1: here because they want a quarterback. And given the fact
- 6:22Speaker 1: that you saw you know, Shador Sanders slide all the
- 6:28Speaker 1: way to that point that was at number twenty six,
- 6:31Speaker 1: that the that the sentiment and the thought process becaing, well,
- 6:35Speaker 1: maybe this is where the Giants opt for shad Door Sanders.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Didn't happen. They went with Jackson Dart.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Shad Door Sanders winds up not being drafted in the
- 6:44Speaker 1: first round.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Now, I do expect him to go very early.
- 6:46Speaker 1: I think if he's there when the Browns or Browns
- 6:48Speaker 1: have three second round pitch and they have one I
- 6:50Speaker 1: think at number three in the second round, I think
- 6:54Speaker 1: Cleveland's going to go for him, if if, if.
- 6:57Speaker 2: He's still there.
- 6:59Speaker 1: And but did it did it surprise you that Shuldaris
- 7:03Speaker 1: Anders was passed over by all the NFL teams.
- 7:08Speaker 3: To be honest, nothing surprises me when it comes to
- 7:11Speaker 3: NFL teams when it comes to drafting quarterbacks, because every
- 7:16Speaker 3: team has the little ideal what they want, big guy.
- 7:20Speaker 3: Some teams want the big guy that sits in the pockets,
- 7:22Speaker 3: stairs the defense, downfields, throw, you know, and some teams
- 7:26Speaker 3: want a mobile quarterback move around, and I think Shadurance
- 7:29Speaker 3: kind of you know, he's a guy that moves around
- 7:33Speaker 3: the passes it. So I think it's kind of a tweener.
- 7:38Speaker 3: That's kind of kind of a tweener between what most
- 7:40Speaker 3: GMS want, most teams want. But I think, yeah, it's
- 7:44Speaker 3: more unlikely because I saw recently h Garrett Miles, Garrett
- 7:50Speaker 3: pretty much excited about who the Browns may bring in
- 7:54Speaker 3: as quarterback and maybe he shouldure is that guy.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I just have a feeling that that's probably going
- 8:01Speaker 1: to be the case if he's still there. So I
- 8:06Speaker 1: have a feeling that's probably going to be the deal.
- 8:08Speaker 1: All right, let me tell you what we have coming up,
- 8:10Speaker 1: because like we like to do on this program is
- 8:14Speaker 1: bring you a variety of things and topics and stuff
- 8:17Speaker 1: like that, because not everybody's into the NFL draft and
- 8:19Speaker 1: not everybody's into the NBA, and not everybody's into.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Major League Baseball, and not.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Everybody's even into in the Longhorn Baseball, even as big
- 8:28Speaker 1: as this series is between Texas and Texas. And and we're
- 8:31Speaker 1: going to hear from Jim Slasnagle a little bit later
- 8:32Speaker 1: on in the program. But uh, coming up, we'll talk
- 8:37Speaker 1: major League Baseball. Our good friend and member of the
- 8:41Speaker 1: Chicago White Sox front office, Gene Watson, will join us
- 8:44Speaker 1: to talk about major League Baseball, our weekly conversation.
- 8:47Speaker 2: We'll do that.
- 8:48Speaker 1: As I mentioned, we're also going to hear from Jim Slasnagle,
- 8:51Speaker 1: the long WRNS head coach.
- 8:52Speaker 2: We do have inconceivable.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Uh and on and on Fridays, Marcus, just so you'll know,
- 8:59Speaker 1: in CONCEIVD means it's a Florida Man Friday. So we
- 9:02Speaker 1: have the exploits of Florida Man as well as some
- 9:06Speaker 1: of the other inconceivable elements. I'm a little excited right
- 9:09Speaker 1: now now, Okay, I think you'll enjoy that. So we
- 9:11Speaker 1: have that coming up, and then in the four o'clock
- 9:15Speaker 1: hour joining us, Ty Harrington's calling the game with me tonight.
- 9:21Speaker 2: He'll be on the call with me on the.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Broadcast for Texas and Texas A and M and T.
- 9:27Speaker 1: I'll be here and we'll have our weekly segment talking
- 9:29Speaker 1: college baseball. We'll do that in the four o'clock hour.
- 9:32Speaker 1: As I mentioned, we'll hear from Jim Schlosnegle coming up
- 9:35Speaker 1: at the three o'clock hour. But up next we talk
- 9:37Speaker 1: major League baseball with Gene Watson. Is we continue from
- 9:40Speaker 1: UFCU Dish falk Field here on Friday afternoon on thirteen
- 9:44Speaker 1: hundred the zone. It's a Friday afternoon as we continue
- 9:51Speaker 1: here from UFCU Dish falk Field. Craig wait with you
- 9:54Speaker 1: here this afternoon at the ballpark. And as always always
- 9:59Speaker 1: we enjoy talking major League baseball with a man who
- 10:03Speaker 1: has oh forty plus years in it or right around there.
- 10:09Speaker 1: That's of the resume of our man, Jeen Watson in
- 10:14Speaker 1: the Chicago White Sox front office who joins us.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Now, did I exaggerate that forty years?
- 10:18Speaker 1: I was thinking you started like around eighty five working
- 10:21Speaker 1: with the Rangers, right six years? Okay, all right, so
- 10:26Speaker 1: only exaggerated a little bit there. Okay, let me get
- 10:30Speaker 1: your thoughts first of all. On well, I'll put it
- 10:35Speaker 1: to you this way. I'll ask you to fill in
- 10:37Speaker 1: the blank. The most unexpected element of the Major league
- 10:45Speaker 1: season so far is blank, And then the most surprising
- 10:50Speaker 1: element of this Major League baseball season so far, since
- 10:54Speaker 1: we're basically a month into it, is blank. Let me
- 10:57Speaker 1: start with the most non surprising. What you expected and
- 11:02Speaker 1: what you've seen so far?
- 11:05Speaker 4: Well, I think.
- 11:05Speaker 5: That for even the little struggles that the Dodgers have had,
- 11:10Speaker 5: I think that everybody has expected them to be the
- 11:13Speaker 5: team to beat this year, and what Yamamoto is doing
- 11:17Speaker 5: is absolutely unbelievable. He has turned into arguably the best
- 11:20Speaker 5: pitcher in baseball. And I think that they're even for
- 11:24Speaker 5: the struggles that they've had against the Chicago Cubs, which
- 11:27Speaker 5: might be the biggest surprise in baseball.
- 11:29Speaker 4: For whatever theody thought they might be.
- 11:32Speaker 5: I think the Dodgers, you know, they're just it doesn't matter.
- 11:36Speaker 5: You almost wish the season away April October, and then
- 11:40Speaker 5: when the bell rings in October, the really good teams
- 11:42Speaker 5: come out and they're ready to play, So the Dodgers
- 11:45Speaker 5: would not be a big surprise. And the Cubs and
- 11:48Speaker 5: the way they've handled the Dodgers and the fight that
- 11:51Speaker 5: they've shown in some of the great games we saw
- 11:53Speaker 5: at Wrigley Field this week. I think that they now
- 11:56Speaker 5: become a team with the minor league system that they
- 11:59Speaker 5: have to go out and make a very big splash
- 12:02Speaker 5: to acquire one and or two starters to really put
- 12:06Speaker 5: them in contention as a favorite in the.
- 12:09Speaker 4: National League this year.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Well, and.
- 12:13Speaker 1: You brought up the Dodgers are asking you the fact
- 12:15Speaker 1: that Blake Snell has to back off of his throwing
- 12:18Speaker 1: program right now because that left shoulder inflammation. Clayton Kershaw's
- 12:22Speaker 1: going through rehab warm up, Tony Gonsolin's going through rehab
- 12:26Speaker 1: warm ups right now. The one guy who really is
- 12:28Speaker 1: toting the mail from is Yamamoto on the mound, and
- 12:32Speaker 1: Sasaki pitch pretty well the other day. But if there's
- 12:35Speaker 1: an achilles heel with La right now, is it the
- 12:38Speaker 1: starting pitching.
- 12:40Speaker 4: It would be.
- 12:42Speaker 5: I saw Gonsolyn's last rehab start and he was outstanding.
- 12:45Speaker 5: So he's gonna be a big lift for them when
- 12:48Speaker 5: he gets ready.
- 12:49Speaker 4: But but that's kind of what makes.
- 12:51Speaker 5: The Dodgers so good, is you know, they take an
- 12:54Speaker 5: injury and it's just the next man up, and their
- 12:57Speaker 5: depth is so incredible, and they're they're constantly looking for
- 13:00Speaker 5: more depth and they've got guys in their minor league
- 13:03Speaker 5: system that they could just say, hey, let's let's give
- 13:06Speaker 5: this guy a shot, and that guy would be better
- 13:08Speaker 5: than a lot of team's best best options. So it's
- 13:12Speaker 5: not anything to be panicked about. Kursol's been just okay
- 13:16Speaker 5: in his rehabs. The velocity's been down a little bit,
- 13:20Speaker 5: but Gonsolin's been outstanding. And so the one thing they
- 13:23Speaker 5: do have going for them is very good depth and
- 13:26Speaker 5: a very strong system.
- 13:27Speaker 1: All right, since we're talking about pitching at the moment,
- 13:30Speaker 1: before I jumped to the unexpected for you and we're
- 13:33Speaker 1: talking about pitching, you were a major part of building
- 13:37Speaker 1: up what the Royals did for several years, including winning
- 13:40Speaker 1: the World Series. How big a blow is it that
- 13:44Speaker 1: Cole Reagan's is going to have to have testing on
- 13:46Speaker 1: the left groin?
- 13:47Speaker 2: He had to leave last night.
- 13:49Speaker 1: Start after what three innings and sixty two pitcher pitches
- 13:52Speaker 1: allowed four runs on three hits, a couple of them
- 13:55Speaker 1: were home runs and two walks. And if this is serious,
- 13:59Speaker 1: howficult is this for Kansas City?
- 14:02Speaker 5: Well, it's very serious, and that's kind of been the
- 14:06Speaker 5: concern all along. When you're talking about Michael waka Cole
- 14:10Speaker 5: Reagan's who's had two Tommy Johns, Seth Lugo, who's had
- 14:14Speaker 5: some injuries in the past, Like that was kind of
- 14:17Speaker 5: the house of cards is the health of the rotation.
- 14:20Speaker 5: But second to the health of rotation has been the
- 14:22Speaker 5: production of the outfield. And the offense is coming from
- 14:26Speaker 5: the outfield. So, uh, the one thing when you're not hitting,
- 14:29Speaker 5: when you can lean on the pitching, that's a big plus.
- 14:32Speaker 5: But if your pitching starts to break down, it it
- 14:35Speaker 5: really turns into a house of cards. So hopefully Cole,
- 14:38Speaker 5: you know, he'll be it won't be a major injury,
- 14:41Speaker 5: and he'll be back sooner than later.
- 14:43Speaker 1: All right, And I don't think this necessarily belongs in
- 14:45Speaker 1: the surprise category, but I'll transition over to it and
- 14:48Speaker 1: get your thoughts on this. Since we were talking about pitching,
- 14:51Speaker 1: and since we were talking about, uh, the Dodgers now now
- 14:56Speaker 1: Walker Buehler of course is applying his trade h in Boston, Massachusetts.
- 15:01Speaker 1: He looked fabulous the other day in the Patriots Day starting.
- 15:04Speaker 1: I think he's three and one right now, So I
- 15:07Speaker 1: don't know it's necessarily a surprise, but it's certainly a
- 15:10Speaker 1: pleasant development for Boston because everybody wasn't quite sure what
- 15:14Speaker 1: Bueller was gonna have even though he had the good
- 15:16Speaker 1: postseason for LA last year. About your thoughts on what
- 15:19Speaker 1: he's doing with Boston.
- 15:21Speaker 4: Well, two things.
- 15:22Speaker 5: One, the pitching infrastructure in Boston is as good as
- 15:26Speaker 5: there is in the game of baseball, you know, going
- 15:28Speaker 5: back to when Brian Banister was there, who now works
- 15:31Speaker 5: with us, but just the some of all the parts,
- 15:35Speaker 5: and he was used to it in LA, high expectation,
- 15:39Speaker 5: great talent around him, and so to be there with
- 15:42Speaker 5: a great infrastructure in the pitching department, high expectation of
- 15:46Speaker 5: the organization, and great pictures around him every day is
- 15:50Speaker 5: kind of, you know, a work in progress and training
- 15:53Speaker 5: for him.
- 15:53Speaker 4: And so Walker Bueller.
- 15:55Speaker 5: As good as he is, is not a finished product.
- 15:58Speaker 5: And the sky is the limit for what this guy
- 16:00Speaker 5: could be. And for them to be really really good
- 16:03Speaker 5: and survived in October, which they have the team to
- 16:06Speaker 5: do it, Walker's gonna have to continue to perform.
- 16:09Speaker 4: At the rate that he has.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Talking Major League Baseball with Jean watch him from the
- 16:12Speaker 1: Chicago White Sox front office here on thirteen hundred zent. Okay,
- 16:15Speaker 1: let me go to part two of that because you
- 16:18Speaker 1: answered the part about what has not surprised you through
- 16:20Speaker 1: the first month of the season, what has what's open
- 16:23Speaker 1: your eyes the most geno maybe unexpected, not only for you,
- 16:28Speaker 1: but for anybody else that's looking at what's going on
- 16:31Speaker 1: in the big leagues right now. What has stood out
- 16:34Speaker 1: to you as a surprise element, good or bad with
- 16:37Speaker 1: this major league season.
- 16:39Speaker 5: I think the Atlanta Braves has been a very big surprise,
- 16:42Speaker 5: and I think we all knew that that was going
- 16:45Speaker 5: to be a very difficult decision with the Mets and
- 16:47Speaker 5: the Phillies and the Nationals.
- 16:49Speaker 4: Having a very good young team.
- 16:51Speaker 5: But I think the expectations were extremely high on the Braves, and.
- 16:55Speaker 4: You know what kind of fell out of rhythm early.
- 16:57Speaker 5: You have to go to Arizona and play a couple
- 17:00Speaker 5: of spring training games against the Cubs who were coming
- 17:03Speaker 5: back from Japan. You've got to start on the West Coast,
- 17:05Speaker 5: a very brutal schedule, going into San Diego and into
- 17:10Speaker 5: La and then travel back east, and they just haven't
- 17:13Speaker 5: really found.
- 17:14Speaker 4: Their rhythm yet.
- 17:15Speaker 5: And then you have the situation with Clinic last week
- 17:19Speaker 5: where he did run the home run with the double out,
- 17:21Speaker 5: thinking it was a home run and then you've got
- 17:24Speaker 5: some you know, infrastructure controversy with players tweeting certain things,
- 17:29Speaker 5: and so I think this is a team that's really
- 17:32Speaker 5: gonna at some point get their backs to the wall
- 17:35Speaker 5: and have to look each other in the mirror and say, look,
- 17:38Speaker 5: we're way too good.
- 17:39Speaker 4: Of a team for this.
- 17:39Speaker 5: And I know the goal right now is win every
- 17:42Speaker 5: day and get to five hundred, but even in the
- 17:45Speaker 5: last four or five days, it's been a very very
- 17:47Speaker 5: very difficult run for them.
- 17:48Speaker 1: All Right, Yeah, you brought that up. And I'm not
- 17:51Speaker 1: in any way, shape or formasking you to whatever single
- 17:54Speaker 1: anybody out or point any fingers anything like that. I'm
- 17:56Speaker 1: more interested in the philosophical side of this, because you've
- 17:59Speaker 1: been in a lot of Major league clubhouses, both when
- 18:03Speaker 1: things are going well and when things are not going well,
- 18:06Speaker 1: And I'm just kind of curious about this. You made
- 18:09Speaker 1: the reference there with Clinic not running out kind of
- 18:13Speaker 1: not running out the ball, and then Ronald Lacoona making
- 18:17Speaker 1: the making having the tweet about it, and I thought
- 18:21Speaker 1: Brian Stinker handled it very very well when he said, look,
- 18:24Speaker 1: you know, we've addressed it and not gonna worry about that,
- 18:26Speaker 1: and all this kind of stuff. Is it your in
- 18:30Speaker 1: your experience over time, what you've seen that things like
- 18:35Speaker 1: that that, like the old John Nadden thing, winning is
- 18:39Speaker 1: a great deodorant. I mean, you win, things kind of
- 18:42Speaker 1: sift away. If you're not winning immediately, things can still
- 18:47Speaker 1: kind of bubble and simmer beneath the surface. A little
- 18:49Speaker 1: bit about when something like that happens about a player
- 18:54Speaker 1: who says something or in this day and age and
- 18:56Speaker 1: social media tweet something out or something like that. How
- 19:00Speaker 1: depending on how the ball club is going to go
- 19:02Speaker 1: as to how long something like that lingers.
- 19:06Speaker 5: What you're really hoping for is that you have the
- 19:08Speaker 5: kind of culture where the players police themselves and that
- 19:12Speaker 5: clubhouse with the twenty six players in the clubhouse is
- 19:16Speaker 5: a living, breathing organism and you cannot you cannot fake it.
- 19:21Speaker 4: It's organic. You cannot fake great culture.
- 19:24Speaker 5: What you want to have is a clubhouse where the
- 19:26Speaker 5: players police themselves, They hold each other accountability, and even
- 19:31Speaker 5: in situations, and most good teams situations, you kind of
- 19:36Speaker 5: connect the dots on accountability. One player manages this player,
- 19:40Speaker 5: and this player manages this one, and you know one
- 19:43Speaker 5: knows when to tell the one player, Hey, keep your
- 19:46Speaker 5: mouth shut and hey, this is not the way we
- 19:48Speaker 5: do things around here. That's what you hope for. And
- 19:51Speaker 5: when you don't have that and you're not playing well,
- 19:54Speaker 5: things can spiral out of control quickly because then your
- 19:58Speaker 5: coaches and your manager have to get involved. And it
- 20:01Speaker 5: is forever a player's game, and so that can be
- 20:04Speaker 5: a very slippery slope for coaching staffs. But you hope
- 20:08Speaker 5: that in the twenty six man roster you have the
- 20:10Speaker 5: type of clubhouse that everybody's kind of policing each other
- 20:14Speaker 5: and holding each other accountable, and they've got that real
- 20:17Speaker 5: big mirror to look at themselves in the eyes and say,
- 20:19Speaker 5: we got to go forward, boys.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Let me keep it. In the National League East, you
- 20:23Speaker 1: mentioned in the Phillies, you mentioned the Mets in the
- 20:26Speaker 1: Nationals as well. The Mets have won five a seven
- 20:29Speaker 1: in a row. They've won eight of their last ten.
- 20:32Speaker 1: They're the only team leading a division that has fewer
- 20:37Speaker 1: than eight losses this year, and they have a five
- 20:42Speaker 1: game lead on Philadepha. Now it's early, like you said,
- 20:45Speaker 1: we're barely a month into it, but I know you
- 20:47Speaker 1: have to be impressed with what you've seen for the
- 20:48Speaker 1: Mets so far.
- 20:50Speaker 4: Very much impressed. And they don't have two hitters.
- 20:54Speaker 5: They have two hitters with over an eight hundred ops
- 20:57Speaker 5: and Lon Soto in one of them. And you know,
- 21:00Speaker 5: they've they've had some injuries in their rotation. What they
- 21:03Speaker 5: do have is a really good manager and they've got
- 21:07Speaker 5: great expectations from last year, and they've got some young
- 21:10Speaker 5: players that have kind of not achieved to the level
- 21:14Speaker 5: that you would hope to this point that are kind
- 21:16Speaker 5: of coming out right now, and the Brett Badies and
- 21:18Speaker 5: the Atunas, and they've got a very good system, and
- 21:21Speaker 5: so if they can continue to trend the way they're doing,
- 21:25Speaker 5: you know, they're gonna spend money. So they're not afraid
- 21:27Speaker 5: of adding at the deadline. They've got the system to
- 21:30Speaker 5: trade away.
- 21:31Speaker 4: Players to add.
- 21:32Speaker 5: They've got major league talent and depth to trade away
- 21:34Speaker 5: if they need to. So they're kind of overperforming for
- 21:38Speaker 5: the health that they've had and the offense production they've
- 21:40Speaker 5: had and the injuries they've had to that rotation. They're
- 21:44Speaker 5: kind of finding a way to win games every night,
- 21:46Speaker 5: and that's.
- 21:47Speaker 4: A real positive sign as you move into May.
- 21:50Speaker 2: Keeping it in the American League.
- 21:53Speaker 1: You've been talking about how aj Hinch does a fabulous
- 21:56Speaker 1: job with the Tigers, and they are up. I have
- 21:57Speaker 1: game on Cleveland a resident Guardians fan, I'm sure, or
- 22:00Speaker 1: with text in to get your your impressions early on
- 22:03Speaker 1: of what you see from Cleveland right now.
- 22:06Speaker 2: Half came back of Detroit in the central.
- 22:09Speaker 5: Yeah, I'll tell you what this division it's It hasn't
- 22:13Speaker 5: really gone the way it's thought. Everybody thought Minnesota was
- 22:15Speaker 5: gonna be a lot to at least contend for the Vision.
- 22:19Speaker 4: They've had a really a tough time.
- 22:20Speaker 5: But actually the Tigers are really really good and they've
- 22:23Speaker 5: got good young starting pitching. Jackson job could arguably be
- 22:27Speaker 5: Rookie of the Year. Flaherty's done a tremendous job. This
- 22:33Speaker 5: is a really sneaky team, not the most talented team
- 22:36Speaker 5: in the world, but they play so well together, and
- 22:40Speaker 5: they played great in that ballpark, and they really got
- 22:43Speaker 5: a quick eye opener as to where they need to
- 22:46Speaker 5: be early in the season when they went out west
- 22:48Speaker 5: and they faced the Dodgers. I think for aj that
- 22:51Speaker 5: was kind of a measuring stick for them, and they
- 22:53Speaker 5: didn't play great, and so I think that that it
- 22:56Speaker 5: kind of gave him a little, you know, a little
- 23:00Speaker 5: way to tell his team.
- 23:01Speaker 4: Look, we're not there yet. For everything that we.
- 23:04Speaker 5: Did in October, this is the measure, and we're not
- 23:07Speaker 5: there yet. And they played really well since then, and
- 23:10Speaker 5: so I think that they've got a really really good
- 23:13Speaker 5: system at the upper levels, arguably the best manager in baseball,
- 23:17Speaker 5: and a really really good young club that's going to
- 23:20Speaker 5: be dangerous in October.
- 23:21Speaker 2: You what do you see him from the Guardian so far?
- 23:25Speaker 5: Well, they just do what they always do. They hit,
- 23:27Speaker 5: and that's what they're doing again this year. They the
- 23:30Speaker 5: pitching hasn't been healthy. The DFA of Tristan McKenzie was
- 23:34Speaker 5: a little bit of surprise for what they thought he
- 23:36Speaker 5: was going to be long term. But Cleveland just kind
- 23:39Speaker 5: of does their own thing all the time. And the
- 23:42Speaker 5: one thing they do do is they play good baseball
- 23:45Speaker 5: and they hit all right.
- 23:46Speaker 1: Let me jump to the American League West. Now, I'm
- 23:49Speaker 1: curious to get your thoughts on this. Seattle's fourteen eleven.
- 23:53Speaker 1: The Rangers were fourteen eleven lost a heartbreaker last night.
- 23:55Speaker 1: I had that three to two lead in the ninth
- 23:57Speaker 1: and uncharacteristic for Leoti ta veris to misplay the fly
- 24:01Speaker 1: ball that wound up opening the door to two runs
- 24:04Speaker 1: coming in in Oakland or the A's as they call themselves, Athletics,
- 24:09Speaker 1: not Sacramento just Athletics won that ball game and ended
- 24:12Speaker 1: up winning that series. And so you have the Mariners
- 24:16Speaker 1: and the Rangers are both fourteen to eleven, the Astros
- 24:18Speaker 1: half game back at thirteen eleven, Angels twelve and twelve,
- 24:22Speaker 1: a game and a half off the pace, and the
- 24:23Speaker 1: A's are two games back. My question is this, how
- 24:27Speaker 1: many teams will stick in this race in your thought?
- 24:30Speaker 1: And for how long will it be like this all
- 24:33Speaker 1: the way in the October between two, three, four, or
- 24:38Speaker 1: maybe even five teams.
- 24:40Speaker 5: Well as it begins, the heat up help will be
- 24:44Speaker 5: a major issue for every club. The advantages would go
- 24:48Speaker 5: to Seattle Texas in Houston because they play indoors.
- 24:52Speaker 4: Their home games are indoors. It's funny about this division.
- 24:56Speaker 5: What makes it so unique is that each team finds
- 24:59Speaker 5: a different way to win. Seattle tremendous pitching, lack a
- 25:04Speaker 5: lot of offense.
- 25:05Speaker 4: The bullpen's okay.
- 25:07Speaker 5: The Angels arguably some of the best young position players
- 25:11Speaker 5: in the game at premium positions.
- 25:14Speaker 4: When you talk.
- 25:14Speaker 5: About Zach Nato, who's just getting back from injury and
- 25:17Speaker 5: Logan o'happy, Naytan Shanwell, and they've got some really good
- 25:21Speaker 5: young pitching. Look for a kid named Caana Dana A
- 25:25Speaker 5: Dana Cayden to come up and impact that rotation soon.
- 25:29Speaker 5: And then for the Astros to lose Kyle Tucker and
- 25:31Speaker 5: Alex Bregman and still be hanging around. Just from a
- 25:35Speaker 5: morale standpoint of what losing two players like that does
- 25:40Speaker 5: to your clubhouse. From a leadership standpoint, it just speaks
- 25:44Speaker 5: volumes to again what a great system the Houston Astros
- 25:48Speaker 5: have at the major league level and the way they
- 25:50Speaker 5: go about the expectation level and how the expectations drive
- 25:55Speaker 5: the results. And Texas for me is arguably not just
- 25:59Speaker 5: the best team in the in the American League West,
- 26:01Speaker 5: but also the American League.
- 26:03Speaker 4: And when they can get everything right.
- 26:05Speaker 5: With their pitching and get healthy and start scoring runs,
- 26:09Speaker 5: I think that this is the team that kind of
- 26:11Speaker 5: they're the most balanced team, and I think they're the
- 26:14Speaker 5: ones that are gonna pull away at some point, but
- 26:16Speaker 5: all different ways of winning ball games each night, and
- 26:20Speaker 5: it's gonna be really funny. And when the when the
- 26:22Speaker 5: summer hits and the heat starts to take over, whoever
- 26:25Speaker 5: can stay the healthiest is gonna be the team that
- 26:27Speaker 5: pulls away.
- 26:28Speaker 1: He's team Watson, the director play a personnel for the
- 26:30Speaker 1: Chicago White Soxs toes is each week to talk Major
- 26:33Speaker 1: League Baseball? Does does does your travels? And they have
- 26:36Speaker 1: and they have just voluminous travel. But do your travels
- 26:40Speaker 1: manage to take you back this way for any of
- 26:43Speaker 1: the games of this rather large series this weekend between
- 26:46Speaker 1: long Horns and Aggies.
- 26:48Speaker 4: I can't wait. I'm gonna be there tomorrow.
- 26:50Speaker 5: I've I've I've knocked out the Aggies and this is
- 26:54Speaker 5: gonna be a great, great series. I haven't been able
- 26:58Speaker 5: to see Texas yet this year, know how super talented
- 27:01Speaker 5: they are.
- 27:01Speaker 4: But this Texas A and M club.
- 27:03Speaker 5: I was in Knoxville when they got ten runs on
- 27:06Speaker 5: Friday night. And you wake up on Saturday morning, and
- 27:09Speaker 5: Ryan Prager's dad and I were teammates at UT Arlington,
- 27:13Speaker 5: and you wake up on Saturday morning and you think
- 27:15Speaker 5: they're up against the Ropes and about to be knocked out.
- 27:18Speaker 5: And they sweep Tennessee those two games, they sweep South
- 27:22Speaker 5: Carolina and they've kind of found their way again. And
- 27:24Speaker 5: it is a super talented baseball team. And you're gonna
- 27:28Speaker 5: have arguably as many major league prospects on the field
- 27:32Speaker 5: in one weekend as you could have tomorrow.
- 27:35Speaker 4: And that's why I will be there.
- 27:37Speaker 1: Yeah, indeed, all right, Hey, I appreciate that, GENO. Look
- 27:40Speaker 1: forward to seeing out here at the ballpark tomorrow. Okay, correct,
- 27:43Speaker 1: take care man, all right. That's Geene Watson. He is
- 27:46Speaker 1: the director of player person out out of the Chicago
- 27:49Speaker 1: White Sox front office.
- 27:50Speaker 2: Talks Major League Baseball with us every week.
- 27:53Speaker 1: Up next, we bring Inconceivable on a Friday afternoon when
- 27:56Speaker 1: we continue from UFCU Dish falk Field.
- 27:58Speaker 2: I'm thirteen hundred the zone.
- 28:00Speaker 6: Inconceivable, inconceivable, inconceivable, inconceivable.
- 28:06Speaker 2: Us in the horn.
- 28:07Speaker 7: I don't think it, miss, What do you think it?
- 28:08Speaker 2: Miss? I?
- 28:11Speaker 1: Yes, inconceivable for a Friday. We know what inconceivable means
- 28:17Speaker 1: on Friday. Obviously, it means, as we like to say,
- 28:22Speaker 1: we go to the lowest of the forty eight states,
- 28:26Speaker 1: the most flacid of those, to pick the low hanging
- 28:31Speaker 1: fruit that is Florida, Man. And we'll get to Florida
- 28:33Speaker 1: Man soon enough. However, there's other things we get to
- 28:37Speaker 1: I'm I'm gonna ask the producer of Marcus and Marcus
- 28:41Speaker 1: and I have known each other for a little bit,
- 28:42Speaker 1: but I don't know that much about Marcus because we
- 28:44Speaker 1: haven't had a chance to work together that much. So
- 28:46Speaker 1: I'm just going to toss a couple of things at you, Marcus,
- 28:49Speaker 1: and you tell me, because I have discovered over time
- 28:52Speaker 1: that people are either into cereal like breakfast Cerea, or
- 28:58Speaker 1: they are not into breakfast Cereal. And I like to
- 29:01Speaker 1: do a fast food and junk food update as part
- 29:04Speaker 1: of Inconceivable. So I put the question to you, my friend,
- 29:07Speaker 1: are you a breakfast cereal kind of guy? Where you
- 29:09Speaker 1: ever into the breakfast Cereal thing?
- 29:12Speaker 3: I'm more in and out with it. Sometimes I'm in
- 29:14Speaker 3: a heavy move for Cereal. Sometimes I'm not. Right now,
- 29:17Speaker 3: I'm not, but in a month or two, I'd probably
- 29:20Speaker 3: be eating some fruity prep pebbles or some Captain Crunch,
- 29:23Speaker 3: like every day when I wake up.
- 29:25Speaker 1: All right, So there you go. You just hit on
- 29:27Speaker 1: what I was gonna ask about Captain Crunch. Right, So
- 29:29Speaker 1: you like Captain crunch?
- 29:30Speaker 2: Yeah? One is the roof of my mouth. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 29:34Speaker 1: Well I should let you know that it says the
- 29:37Speaker 1: weight is over Captain Crunch is bringing back it's original
- 29:42Speaker 1: summertime flavor that they had back in twenty sixteen as
- 29:45Speaker 1: a limited edition release to bringing it back for the
- 29:47Speaker 1: summer Orange cream pop crunch orange cream up like like
- 29:53Speaker 1: a dreamsickle type thing?
- 29:55Speaker 2: Does that? Does that hold any interest for you?
- 29:57Speaker 1: There?
- 29:58Speaker 3: I might give it a try. I used to love
- 30:01Speaker 3: the Dreamsuckles when I was young, So yeah, I give
- 30:03Speaker 3: it a try.
- 30:04Speaker 1: Okay, the folks say, quote, this isn't simply an orange
- 30:09Speaker 1: colored Captain Crunch, But it isn't simply a cap'n Crunch
- 30:13Speaker 1: shaped orange cereal either. It's an orange coated Captain Crunch
- 30:17Speaker 1: that carries the best of both worlds. According to a reviewer,
- 30:20Speaker 1: it tastes eerily like an orange cream sickle or dreamsickle
- 30:25Speaker 1: by combining a sweet and juicy bite of orange fruit
- 30:28Speaker 1: flavor with a delightfully creamy, yet subtle vanilla finish. So yeah,
- 30:35Speaker 1: maybe you may have to review it for us and
- 30:37Speaker 1: let us know.
- 30:38Speaker 2: Let us know which. I By the way, I am
- 30:39Speaker 2: a breakfast cereal guy. I like those which.
- 30:43Speaker 1: It's so your favorite would either be, you said, fruity
- 30:46Speaker 1: Pebbles or Captain Crunch if you were to pick a
- 30:49Speaker 1: favorite breakfast.
- 30:50Speaker 3: Cereal, say, Lucky Charms is probably I used to love
- 30:53Speaker 3: pops as a kid, but uh yeah, I kind of
- 30:55Speaker 3: grew out of that. But I would say Lucky Charms
- 30:58Speaker 3: is probably my favorite.
- 30:59Speaker 1: You and my wife and Crisp Beard all Lucky Charms people.
- 31:05Speaker 2: So there you go.
- 31:06Speaker 1: I like it too, all right, all right, jumping from
- 31:10Speaker 1: junkie cereals to junk food in general.
- 31:13Speaker 2: How do you stand with oreos? Um it's cookies? Okay?
- 31:19Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 31:19Speaker 2: So yeah, okay, all right? Do you like pretzels? Only
- 31:25Speaker 2: pretzels buy stuff. I don't like mixing it with anything.
- 31:28Speaker 1: So you would not be down with a chocolate covered
- 31:31Speaker 1: pretzel favored flavored Oreo.
- 31:34Speaker 2: No, I have to pass on.
- 31:35Speaker 1: That, okay, because that's coming out in a couple of weeks.
- 31:38Speaker 1: The chocolate covered pretzel flavored Oreo will launch nationwide on
- 31:45Speaker 1: May fifth, and they're all fired up about this thing.
- 31:48Speaker 1: I've never been really that much into I like the
- 31:51Speaker 1: maybe the small mini chocolate covered pretzels, but I'm not
- 31:55Speaker 1: really big into mixing my sweet and salty that much. Yes,
- 32:00Speaker 1: so that's coming out.
- 32:00Speaker 3: That's just like the trail mixes that have, like the
- 32:03Speaker 3: candy in and it's just it's bad.
- 32:06Speaker 1: That doesn't work for you. Yeah, okay, all right? Are
- 32:09Speaker 1: you much into collecting or at least following the sports
- 32:15Speaker 1: card and sports memorabilia collectible scene?
- 32:18Speaker 3: Are you just like looking at my childhood and just
- 32:21Speaker 3: bringing up stuff that I used to do it.
- 32:24Speaker 1: I have a reason.
- 32:24Speaker 2: I have a reason for all these questions.
- 32:26Speaker 1: Like I asked you about the I asked you about
- 32:28Speaker 1: the oreos, I asked you about the breakfast here, and
- 32:30Speaker 1: I have a reason for asking you this question. Were
- 32:32Speaker 1: you into have you now been or have you ever
- 32:36Speaker 1: been into the collectible scene?
- 32:39Speaker 3: I used to collect car sports cards as a kid, Okay,
- 32:44Speaker 3: any I had a Barry Santa's Rookie card when I
- 32:47Speaker 3: was a kid and one of my family members did
- 32:51Speaker 3: bad things to it and I'm still upset about it.
- 32:54Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 32:55Speaker 1: But everybody that collected cards at one time or another
- 32:58Speaker 1: has a horror story like mine with my mom. Throw
- 33:00Speaker 1: bring out a sack of cards, had over two thousand
- 33:01Speaker 1: cards in it, had a Willi Nayes and a hancarrot
- 33:04Speaker 1: and all that kind of stuff. So yeah, the reason
- 33:06Speaker 1: why I asked this is for those who are into collectibles.
- 33:11Speaker 2: This week, by the way.
- 33:12Speaker 1: I'm sure not many people knew about this, but this
- 33:16Speaker 1: week it was two days ago. Wednesday was William Shakespeare's birthday. Now,
- 33:21Speaker 1: he was born in fifteen sixty four, so that would
- 33:23Speaker 1: make him what five one hundred and forty eight years old?
- 33:29Speaker 1: I think if it worked out an add to one. No, right,
- 33:34Speaker 1: but his collected works an original. In fact, all four
- 33:41Speaker 1: of William Shakespeare's folios will be offered at auction in
- 33:46Speaker 1: a single lot for the first time since nineteen eighty nine.
- 33:49Speaker 1: Sotheby's is planning to sell the first four editions of
- 33:53Speaker 1: William Shakespeare's collected works next month. Care to estimate what
- 33:57Speaker 1: that might fetch? Marcus?
- 34:02Speaker 2: This is in what currency?
- 34:04Speaker 8: Uh?
- 34:05Speaker 1: Just if it just said an American if we said
- 34:06Speaker 1: American money, what do you think it would How much
- 34:09Speaker 1: money do you think that that would fetch?
- 34:11Speaker 2: Twenty five million? I don't know.
- 34:13Speaker 1: It's going to start around six million dollars. Oh, okay, okay,
- 34:17Speaker 1: overshot it.
- 34:18Speaker 2: That's all right.
- 34:19Speaker 1: The first folio, which was published in sixteen twenty three
- 34:22Speaker 1: after his death, is among the most significant books ever produced.
- 34:26Speaker 2: Is described.
- 34:26Speaker 1: It contains thirty six of Shakespeare's plays, including Macbeth, Hamlet, Romeo,
- 34:31Speaker 1: and Juliet in a Midsummer Night's Dream. There are about
- 34:34Speaker 1: seven hundred and fifty copies of it printed. There's about
- 34:37Speaker 1: two hundred and thirty believed to survive today, and of
- 34:43Speaker 1: those two hundred and thirty, most are in public institutions
- 34:46Speaker 1: like the British Library. In the New York Public Library,
- 34:49Speaker 1: very few copies are described as complete.
- 34:52Speaker 2: But and due to the Great Fire of London.
- 34:54Speaker 1: By the way, the third folio is actually the rarest
- 34:56Speaker 1: of the bunch's only an estimate one hundred and eighty
- 34:58Speaker 1: two surviving today. But if you got a spare six
- 35:01Speaker 1: million and up, you know, and you're into Shakespeare, now
- 35:05Speaker 1: you can do it. I took a Shakespeare analysis course
- 35:07Speaker 1: in college. I used to tell people I got out
- 35:09Speaker 1: of there on new Hamlets underwear size. I mean it
- 35:11Speaker 1: was it was pretty detail stuff, all right. So here
- 35:14Speaker 1: we are to Florida Man Friday.
- 35:17Speaker 2: Oh boy, here we go.
- 35:18Speaker 4: All right.
- 35:18Speaker 1: Well, first of all, you have the you have the
- 35:22Speaker 1: the usual really disturbing, troublesome Florida man fee headline Florida
- 35:27Speaker 1: man kills father and wounds mother over video games.
- 35:31Speaker 2: Argument game. That's a good question.
- 35:35Speaker 1: Let's see Florida Man admitted the police he fatally shot
- 35:37Speaker 1: his father wounded his mother, allegedly over comments his parents
- 35:41Speaker 1: made about him spending too much time playing video games
- 35:45Speaker 1: and not having a job. Joseph Voyd, twenty three years
- 35:49Speaker 1: of age, told Polk County Sheriff's deputies that his followers
- 35:52Speaker 1: upset about him spending the majority of his time playing
- 35:55Speaker 1: video games and was quote writing his ass about making
- 35:58Speaker 1: something of himself and getting job. So then he shot
- 36:03Speaker 1: the dad, sixty three year old Barvin Boyd, killed him,
- 36:07Speaker 1: wounded his mom, fifty eight.
- 36:09Speaker 2: Year old Susan Voight.
- 36:11Speaker 1: So they got him by the way, his criminal history
- 36:15Speaker 1: included arrest for firing a weapon in a residential area
- 36:18Speaker 1: and battery. No word as to.
- 36:20Speaker 2: Whether that had anything to do with video games.
- 36:22Speaker 1: And then, finally, if you know a lot of things
- 36:25Speaker 1: about the state of Florida, you also know that, of course,
- 36:28Speaker 1: Florida is the home of disney World, and we always
- 36:32Speaker 1: hear about weird things that happen at or around disney World.
- 36:36Speaker 2: This is one of the stranger ones.
- 36:39Speaker 1: Headline Former Disney World employee sentenced to three years in
- 36:43Speaker 1: prison for hacking menus. Former Disney World employee Michael Schuer
- 36:50Speaker 1: was sentenced to three years in federal prison for hacking
- 36:54Speaker 1: in the Walt Disney World's computer system to manipulate menu information.
- 36:59Speaker 1: Former employee accessing the menu system following his termination from
- 37:03Speaker 1: the company a month prior. He worked as a menu
- 37:06Speaker 1: product manager and was accused of hacking into the system
- 37:10Speaker 1: over three months and manipulating menus in various ways that
- 37:13Speaker 1: included changing prices, adding profanity, and altering the allergen information.
- 37:19Speaker 2: That's just what we all need, right, I think it's
- 37:22Speaker 2: allergen information.
- 37:23Speaker 1: I got, yeah, with some with some profanity in there,
- 37:26Speaker 1: with a with an overpriced item. There, all right, there
- 37:30Speaker 1: it is. There's your inconceivable for Friday, complete with Florida.
- 37:34Speaker 2: Man.
- 37:34Speaker 1: We'll be back to wrap up hour number one on
- 37:36Speaker 1: thirteen under the zone. All right, we come to the
- 37:40Speaker 1: end of hour number one, but still a lot to
- 37:43Speaker 1: go in hour number two and hour number three. Of course,
- 37:46Speaker 1: we're here with you up until five o'clock, and then
- 37:50Speaker 1: we'll be back at six forty five with the pregame
- 37:52Speaker 1: start time. In the first pitches at seven o'clock, Texas
- 37:54Speaker 1: against Texas A and M. More on this matchup between
- 37:57Speaker 1: Longhorns and Aggies coming up in our number two of
- 38:01Speaker 1: the program. Well, update, there's a pretty important SEC game
- 38:05Speaker 1: going on right now. They moved it up I think
- 38:07Speaker 1: to dodge some weather, and we'll sell you about that
- 38:09Speaker 1: coming up. But obviously day two of the NFL Draft,
- 38:12Speaker 1: how many more Texas Longhorns will go, you know, for
- 38:15Speaker 1: the first time since nineteen eighty three went in the
- 38:18Speaker 1: first round. So we'll get to that coming up, NBA
- 38:22Speaker 1: playoffs and more so, stay with us our number two
- 38:27Speaker 1: of three hours on a Friday, coming up here on
- 38:30Speaker 1: thirteen hundred the Zone, our number two of the program
- 38:35Speaker 1: here on thirteen hundreds. I almost said round two, because
- 38:38Speaker 1: Round two of the NFL Draft continues and gets underway tonight,
- 38:44Speaker 1: and I don't know how this is. Well I know
- 38:48Speaker 1: how it's possible, but I can't say as I remember
- 38:53Speaker 1: the same question going into round two being the exact
- 38:59Speaker 1: same question.
- 39:00Speaker 2: Going into round one. And you know where I'm going
- 39:02Speaker 2: with this.
- 39:03Speaker 1: The question is where and when wolves should Sanders be selected,
- 39:08Speaker 1: because there were those who thought that he could go
- 39:10Speaker 1: as high as top five, that somebody might make a
- 39:14Speaker 1: deal to take him the top five, possibly top ten.
- 39:17Speaker 1: I did say on our Draft Day special yesterday that
- 39:21Speaker 1: it would not surprise me, and our producer just afterd
- 39:26Speaker 1: Marcus Spears echoed the sentiments that it would not surprise
- 39:30Speaker 1: me to see should do or Sanders slide deep into
- 39:33Speaker 1: or perhaps even completely out of round one and for
- 39:37Speaker 1: any number of reasons.
- 39:38Speaker 2: And that's exactly what happened.
- 39:41Speaker 1: And as we look at what's to come in round two,
- 39:45Speaker 1: that's that's going to be a topic of conversation. How
- 39:48Speaker 1: long Wolve should Ur Sanders still be on the board.
- 39:50Speaker 1: I'm looking at one mock draft that says he's coming
- 39:52Speaker 1: off first pick, first pick number thirty three over roll
- 39:56Speaker 1: of round two, because the first pick belongs to the
- 39:58Speaker 1: Cleveland Browns, and the Browns did not want to take
- 40:00Speaker 1: a quarterback in round one, and they made that deal
- 40:04Speaker 1: with the Jaguars of the Jags could move up and
- 40:06Speaker 1: get Travis Hunter. So now maybe as a second round pick,
- 40:13Speaker 1: they might be a little more amenable to that. But
- 40:16Speaker 1: the thing that I found out last night and looking
- 40:18Speaker 1: at all of the draft analysis afterwards, because last night
- 40:23Speaker 1: and the way it usually kind of works in my
- 40:25Speaker 1: house is I keep a pretty loose thumb on the
- 40:32Speaker 1: remote and flip around and I watch a lot of things.
- 40:35Speaker 1: Now I watch. I watched quite a bit of NBA playoffs.
- 40:40Speaker 1: I watched NHL Stanley Cup playoffs. I watched their friend
- 40:44Speaker 1: and Collie Keith Morland called the Georgia Oklahoma series opener.
- 40:47Speaker 2: He's working that.
- 40:48Speaker 1: It's a Thursday, Friday, Saturday series in Athens, Georgia. And
- 40:53Speaker 1: obviously and predominantly I was watching the NFL Draft. I
- 40:57Speaker 1: got to where I could time it pretty good between
- 41:00Speaker 1: in the you know, in the ten minutes downtime in
- 41:02Speaker 1: between picks, to flip back over and see it in
- 41:07Speaker 1: time for the pick. And here's some of the analysis
- 41:09Speaker 1: afterwards all of that. But I also stayed up pretty
- 41:13Speaker 1: late and was watching a lot of the post draft
- 41:16Speaker 1: analysis and a lot of that seemed to center around
- 41:20Speaker 1: why did shaduor Sanders go completely out of the first round,
- 41:25Speaker 1: And then of course there were the requisite shots of
- 41:27Speaker 1: him out and at the place there in Canton out
- 41:31Speaker 1: near Tyler Out in East Texas where he was situated
- 41:35Speaker 1: with his family. And then he issued a statement and
- 41:38Speaker 1: I thought he handled it pretty well and talking about, hey,
- 41:41Speaker 1: exactly how he thought this would go. But there's a
- 41:44Speaker 1: plan for everything, and we'll be fine. It'll all be fine.
- 41:46Speaker 1: So it was that kind of thing, and I thought
- 41:48Speaker 1: he handled it pretty well. But then there are a
- 41:51Speaker 1: lot of the draft experts were asked why why did
- 41:55Speaker 1: he fall this farm? And there's probably two or three
- 42:00Speaker 1: reasons that folks could make for it. And I'm not
- 42:06Speaker 1: comfortable with somebody saying, well, well, Scotts just didn't think
- 42:09Speaker 1: he was that good. There's reasons beyond that, and there's
- 42:14Speaker 1: reasons why they might not have thought that he was
- 42:20Speaker 1: first round material, whatever those reasons are, and folks control
- 42:24Speaker 1: their own conclusions with this. I thought they handled it
- 42:28Speaker 1: pretty well. Nick Saban made a great point last night
- 42:31Speaker 1: when he said, you know, we all do all of
- 42:34Speaker 1: this speculating this and that that in the end, a
- 42:37Speaker 1: team decides when they want a guy, and then it's
- 42:40Speaker 1: up to them when they take it for the for
- 42:42Speaker 1: the young man to go and play and play well.
- 42:44Speaker 1: For that That's that's all that matters on this thing.
- 42:46Speaker 1: The rest of it is details and the details surround
- 42:50Speaker 1: money first round money as opposed to you know, falling
- 42:55Speaker 1: out of the first round and not getting that kind
- 42:57Speaker 1: of first round money. But that's basically what talking about
- 43:00Speaker 1: is if it was going to be first round money
- 43:02Speaker 1: otherwise you know, he's going to be drafted, He's going
- 43:07Speaker 1: to go somewhere, and he's going to be projected to
- 43:10Speaker 1: be a contributor. So we'll see if that's the case
- 43:14Speaker 1: with the Browns taking in with the first pick in
- 43:16Speaker 1: the second round. Put it this way, as much attention
- 43:20Speaker 1: as was focused on Shoudeur Sanders in the first round,
- 43:25Speaker 1: it wasn't as much as say, you know, waiting on
- 43:27Speaker 1: the inevitable Camore to be selected and then what other
- 43:29Speaker 1: trades might happen. But Sanders was always a piece of
- 43:32Speaker 1: it going into round number two. Today it's more than
- 43:39Speaker 1: just a piece. He's the centerpiece of it now about
- 43:41Speaker 1: you know, what happens with him and how far there.
- 43:45Speaker 1: There was even speculation, I think this morning among some
- 43:48Speaker 1: of the draft analysts on ESPN who were speculating what
- 43:54Speaker 1: might happen if he slid all the way to the
- 43:57Speaker 1: third round h and that may the Pittsburgh Steelers, who
- 44:01Speaker 1: many thought would take him if he was available at
- 44:03Speaker 1: twenty one, and he was not. I mean he was,
- 44:07Speaker 1: but they did not select him. You know, would they
- 44:10Speaker 1: would he still be there? I can't imagine him being
- 44:13Speaker 1: there and available in the third round. I was able
- 44:15Speaker 1: to imagine him not being selected in the first round
- 44:18Speaker 1: for any number of reasons, among those to fit, what
- 44:21Speaker 1: people wanted from certain positions, what their draft needs were,
- 44:26Speaker 1: and where he rated among other quarterbacks who were available.
- 44:29Speaker 1: Folks can have their own argument and discussion and debate
- 44:33Speaker 1: about whether the Giants should have taken shudor Sanders instead
- 44:36Speaker 1: of Jackson Dart. But the end result about this is
- 44:40Speaker 1: that you know, the very few quarterbacks were taking a
- 44:44Speaker 1: Round one. This was not expected to be a heavy, heavy,
- 44:48Speaker 1: high round quarterback draft.
- 44:50Speaker 2: It wasn't going to be like this.
- 44:51Speaker 1: This was not nineteen eighty three with the magical draft
- 44:56Speaker 1: that that was for quarterbacks. But there are quarterbacks available
- 45:00Speaker 1: that are still available, including Quinn Ewers, which also brings
- 45:04Speaker 1: us to the Texas thing. How many long Warns will
- 45:07Speaker 1: go On Day two of the draft. Day number one
- 45:10Speaker 1: of the draft saw three long Worns go in the
- 45:14Speaker 1: first round. Kelvin Banks ninth of roll selection to the
- 45:19Speaker 1: New Orleans Saints, and you saw the emotion there from
- 45:22Speaker 1: his family. I love seeing that, by the way, on
- 45:24Speaker 1: draft day, when the families get a chance to see
- 45:29Speaker 1: not only their you know, their son, or their their
- 45:32Speaker 1: son or nephew, or whatever or close friends dreams come true,
- 45:38Speaker 1: but in some ways their dreams come true as well.
- 45:42Speaker 1: Matthew Golden had said something about, you know, wanting a
- 45:46Speaker 1: dream he had was to purchase the home that his
- 45:49Speaker 1: grandmother had lived in for a long time in Houston
- 45:51Speaker 1: and lost lost that home later, and he drove past
- 45:55Speaker 1: that house as recent as about a week ago, and
- 45:58Speaker 1: that he was interested in the possible purchase at that home.
- 46:02Speaker 1: But hearing those things, John ay Baron the great story
- 46:06Speaker 1: and just a fabulous young man. You know, I've had
- 46:12Speaker 1: a lot of pleasure not only broadcasting his games as
- 46:16Speaker 1: a long worn but even going back to covering him
- 46:19Speaker 1: when he was a standout at Conley High in the
- 46:21Speaker 1: flug of eliasd and just what a great dude. And
- 46:27Speaker 1: to see that come true and for him to be
- 46:29Speaker 1: the twentieth overall selection and go to Denver, it's a
- 46:32Speaker 1: great story. And then I mentioned Matthew Golden obviously going
- 46:36Speaker 1: to the Packers, and that brought about a great deal
- 46:38Speaker 1: of excitement there in Green Bay.
- 46:39Speaker 2: They got lit up about that.
- 46:41Speaker 1: So three long Worns selected in the first round of
- 46:44Speaker 1: the draft for the first time since nineteen eighty the
- 46:48Speaker 1: only other time it happened. Happened on this and I
- 46:54Speaker 1: will tell you that Cameron Parker had all of us
- 47:03Speaker 1: chuckling and completely thrown off when he mentioned, can you
- 47:07Speaker 1: name the only other time the Longhorns had three players
- 47:11Speaker 1: selected in the first round of the NFL Draft? And
- 47:14Speaker 1: the answer was nineteen forty two. Well, nineteen forty two,
- 47:20Speaker 1: in addition to being a war year, was the only time.
- 47:26Speaker 1: It wasn't the only time, but at the time there
- 47:28Speaker 1: were only the draft was only six years old, so
- 47:32Speaker 1: even the draft was different back then than it is now.
- 47:36Speaker 1: Nineteen eighty is much more representative time. And the Longhorns had,
- 47:43Speaker 1: you know, the Longhorns had an opportunity to repeat history
- 47:49Speaker 1: and they did and so that was really cool. So uh,
- 47:53Speaker 1: looking at our text line because I asked Marcus about
- 47:57Speaker 1: his collecting days, Marcus, but he said, I have a
- 48:00Speaker 1: dan uh dan pastor any card worth about twenty five cents.
- 48:05Speaker 1: Uh because from his time of playing with the Oilers,
- 48:08Speaker 1: or maybe later after the trade for Stable when he
- 48:10Speaker 1: went to the Raiders or something like that, do you
- 48:12Speaker 1: remember how valuable your most valuable card was?
- 48:18Speaker 2: You know what?
- 48:18Speaker 3: I remember having a little books h And I don't
- 48:23Speaker 3: know how accurate they were I had.
- 48:26Speaker 2: I don't remember even the card.
- 48:28Speaker 3: I remember I had one card that was like worth
- 48:30Speaker 3: like ten bucks, but that's fit as high as it got.
- 48:34Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, all right, Uh well, uh you know that's
- 48:39Speaker 1: you know, I, like I said, I had some cards
- 48:41Speaker 1: that were worth some things and and and ended up
- 48:44Speaker 1: losing out on all of that.
- 48:45Speaker 2: But we all we all kind of have that story.
- 48:47Speaker 2: It's almost kind of like a fish story.
- 48:49Speaker 1: We all kind of have that that story about Oh
- 48:51Speaker 1: I had this card, or I had that comic book,
- 48:53Speaker 1: or I had this collectible and uh somehow I got
- 48:56Speaker 1: lost or the dog ate it, or my mom threw
- 48:59Speaker 1: it out or whatever. So that's always gonna come back.
- 49:03Speaker 1: And as I bring it back full circle to the
- 49:06Speaker 1: NFL draft, that's why you have so many people with
- 49:11Speaker 1: trying to get those rookie cards. Can imagine what the
- 49:14Speaker 1: rookie card for cam Ward could and I do stress
- 49:18Speaker 1: the word could could be worth someday. We'll see, we'll
- 49:25Speaker 1: see how that all turns out, all right. I mentioned
- 49:28Speaker 1: that there was an SEC baseball game going on right now.
- 49:30Speaker 1: It is Oklahoma and Georgia, the three game series in Athens.
- 49:35Speaker 1: They both went into the weekend with ten and eight
- 49:37Speaker 1: conference records. Oklahoma won last night's game eight to six.
- 49:43Speaker 1: The Sooners were up eight to one and Georgia cut
- 49:46Speaker 1: it back to an eight to six ball game before
- 49:49Speaker 1: Oklahoma was able to close that out and get the win. Well, today,
- 49:51Speaker 1: it's almost an inverse even though the game is still
- 49:53Speaker 1: going on. Georgia jumped to a nine to two lead
- 49:56Speaker 1: on Oklahoma, and they moved the start time up by
- 49:59Speaker 1: like six hours because they were concerned about weather in
- 50:02Speaker 1: the area. So Georgia jumps to a nine to two lead.
- 50:05Speaker 1: Oklahoma cuts it to nine to seven in the seventh
- 50:08Speaker 1: before Georgia gets out of the inning. Now they're in
- 50:10Speaker 1: the top of the top of the eighth inning and
- 50:13Speaker 1: george is still leading oklum it's ten to seven right now,
- 50:17Speaker 1: and again the Sooners are now eleven and eight in
- 50:19Speaker 1: the conference and Georgia is ten and nine in the league.
- 50:24Speaker 1: So they have game two of that series well underway.
- 50:28Speaker 1: Of course, the Longhorns and Texas A and M have
- 50:31Speaker 1: their series opener tonight here at UFCU dish Fowk Field,
- 50:34Speaker 1: and coming up will take a closer look at the
- 50:37Speaker 1: matchups on that a little later on we'll hear from
- 50:39Speaker 1: Jim Schlasnagel to Long Horns head coach, will visit with
- 50:42Speaker 1: Ty Harrington as well, and will work the broadcast with
- 50:44Speaker 1: me tonight.
- 50:44Speaker 2: So we've got all that and more coming.
- 50:46Speaker 1: Up when we continue here on hour number two from
- 50:49Speaker 1: UFCU dish falk Field.
- 50:50Speaker 2: I'm thirteen under the zone.
- 50:51Speaker 1: You're on a Friday afternoon, bring you to the program
- 50:55Speaker 1: from UFCU dish falk Cup bright sunny skies right now.
- 50:58Speaker 1: There was some chance of some showers in the area.
- 51:05Speaker 2: That could happen, but.
- 51:10Speaker 1: It was only a minor chance of that happening at best,
- 51:14Speaker 1: and even if it did, it probably wouldn't be anything prolific.
- 51:19Speaker 1: In other words, it wouldn't it shouldn't be anything that
- 51:24Speaker 1: would prevent the game from being played tonight, or being
- 51:29Speaker 1: played to its completion tonight, or any anything like that.
- 51:31Speaker 1: I think it'll all, you know, at this point, it
- 51:37Speaker 1: should all come off with out a big issue, should
- 51:41Speaker 1: be able to be played without any real big problem.
- 51:45Speaker 1: All right, As I mentioned, it's a big weekend for
- 51:49Speaker 1: college baseball here in Austin across the state of Texas,
- 51:55Speaker 1: and there's another big series. By the way, I'll tell
- 51:57Speaker 1: you about with regard to the possibility on down the
- 52:04Speaker 1: road to postseason. There's another series outside of the SEC
- 52:09Speaker 1: that's pretty important as well, and we'll get to that
- 52:11Speaker 1: coming up in a little bit also. But as we mentioned,
- 52:16Speaker 1: it's a pretty big weekend for Texas and Texas A
- 52:20Speaker 1: and M. It's the first time that they will have
- 52:25Speaker 1: met as conference foes since twenty twelve. As we know,
- 52:30Speaker 1: before Texas A and M went off to the SEC
- 52:36Speaker 1: and the log Orange, we're still in the Big Twelve
- 52:38Speaker 1: and they continue to play every year. This is different
- 52:42Speaker 1: than the years between football games where the two teams
- 52:51Speaker 1: did not meet at all in football between twenty twelve
- 52:56Speaker 1: and twenty twenty four, and they finally got together in
- 53:00Speaker 1: twenty twenty fours. We know Thanksgiving weekend last November when
- 53:04Speaker 1: the Long Wrorns beat Texas A and M in College
- 53:06Speaker 1: Station seventeen to seven to renew the Cotton Holdings Lone
- 53:11Speaker 1: Star Showdown rivalry series. Cotton Holdings became the sponsor for
- 53:18Speaker 1: that and this is the first year that they've reupt
- 53:27Speaker 1: this Lone Star Showdown series. And I should let you
- 53:30Speaker 1: know that if you're a long Wrn fan, it's good news.
- 53:35Speaker 1: If this thing means something to you because even before
- 53:40Speaker 1: the two teams take the field tonight, Texas has already
- 53:45Speaker 1: clinched winning the Lone Star Showdown Series. They're up ten
- 53:49Speaker 1: to four in the series, and this weekend baseball series
- 53:54Speaker 1: counts for one point out of that and it's a
- 53:56Speaker 1: ten to four edge for Texas, so they've already clinched
- 53:59Speaker 1: winning it as it's come back around. But what I
- 54:01Speaker 1: have found about that with regard to the Lone Star
- 54:06Speaker 1: Showdown Series is it's important when it's convenient for folks,
- 54:11Speaker 1: whether you're a Longhorn or an Aggie, to bring it up.
- 54:14Speaker 2: It's that kind of thing.
- 54:16Speaker 1: I understand that, and long worn fans will also point
- 54:20Speaker 1: out that the Director's Cup, which of course is a
- 54:24Speaker 1: national award for the top overall athletic program in the country,
- 54:28Speaker 1: and the Longhorns have won that three of the last
- 54:30Speaker 1: four years, or they're closing in on making it for
- 54:32Speaker 1: the last five. They have a pretty healthy lead in
- 54:35Speaker 1: the points in that as well, and that's the nationally
- 54:39Speaker 1: for having the best overall collegiate athletic program in the
- 54:42Speaker 1: country and winning some national championships that the Longhorns have
- 54:47Speaker 1: during the season as well as the proliferation of conference championships,
- 54:52Speaker 1: most notably of late men's tennis winning as well, and
- 54:56Speaker 1: obviously baseball is in the thick of the fight for
- 54:58Speaker 1: it A softball.
- 54:59Speaker 2: Is as well.
- 55:00Speaker 1: But they need a good weekend in Norman, Oklahoma against
- 55:04Speaker 1: the defending national champion Sooners. They need a good weekend
- 55:06Speaker 1: they're to strengthen their possibility. They're they're very close to
- 55:10Speaker 1: the top. And and by the way, it's Texas A
- 55:12Speaker 1: and M who leads the SEC softball standings right now.
- 55:16Speaker 1: So uh, Texas needs a good weekend in Norman.
- 55:21Speaker 2: Uh at what's it called. It's called.
- 55:24Speaker 1: It's named uh. I think it's called Loves Park or whatever,
- 55:30Speaker 1: named after the truck stop, uh, you know loves Loves
- 55:33Speaker 1: truck stops, which are headquartered in Oklahoma. But anyway, they
- 55:35Speaker 1: need they need a big weekend in uh, Oklahoma to
- 55:41Speaker 1: stay in the thick of the fight of the SEC race.
- 55:44Speaker 1: The log Oorns sit in first place on top of
- 55:47Speaker 1: the SEC standings going into the weekend by three full
- 55:50Speaker 1: games over Arkansas. But as we know, the long Orangs
- 55:54Speaker 1: will be in Fayetteville next weekend to play Arkansas next weekend,
- 55:57Speaker 1: so that could be a critical series. In fact, it
- 55:59Speaker 1: will be one or another, not only in terms of
- 56:02Speaker 1: who might or could possibly win the SEC, but also
- 56:08Speaker 1: you know, we could be talking about placement on national
- 56:12Speaker 1: seeds as well. So that's an important series. But the
- 56:16Speaker 1: other series began this weekend. Last night, Missouri had a
- 56:22Speaker 1: five to I think it was a five to one
- 56:24Speaker 1: lead or five to two lead on Alabama. They ended
- 56:26Speaker 1: up losing seven to five. Missouri is now oh and
- 56:30Speaker 1: nineteen in the SEC oh and nineteen as they played
- 56:34Speaker 1: that series in Tuscaloosa, Alabama with the win went to
- 56:36Speaker 1: ten and nine in conference play with the win.
- 56:39Speaker 2: The rest of the series get underwraty to night.
- 56:40Speaker 1: Obviously this one here, but additionally South Carolina is at Kentucky.
- 56:44Speaker 1: Both of those programs have bent resurgent. South Carolina comes
- 56:49Speaker 1: off winning a series against Ole miss even though they're
- 56:51Speaker 1: in fifteenth place at four and fourteen in the conference.
- 56:55Speaker 2: Kentucky, after dropping.
- 56:57Speaker 1: Two out of three at home to Texas, turned around
- 57:02Speaker 1: and took two out of three in Knoxville over Tennessee.
- 57:05Speaker 1: That was a huge win for them. Mississippi State is
- 57:08Speaker 1: at Auburn. Mississippi State comes off dropping two out of
- 57:12Speaker 1: three at home to Florida. Auburn of course swept by Texas.
- 57:17Speaker 1: Auburn's ninety nine in the league, Misissippi state of six
- 57:19Speaker 1: and twelve in the conference. Tennessee is at LSU. Big
- 57:23Speaker 1: series there, both teams trying to bounce back after having
- 57:28Speaker 1: some difficult weekend series. LSU twelve and six in the
- 57:35Speaker 1: league and Tennessee is twelve and six in the league.
- 57:38Speaker 1: In Tennessee dropped two out of three, as I mentioned,
- 57:42Speaker 1: at home last weekend against Kentucky, so that's about positioning
- 57:46Speaker 1: as well. Vanderbilt plays at Ole Miss. Vanderbilt had dropped
- 57:52Speaker 1: two of three at OUI were eleven and seven in
- 57:55Speaker 1: the league, and like I said, Oklahoma now eleven and
- 57:58Speaker 1: eight after winning last night. They're going to the bottom
- 58:01Speaker 1: of the eighth inning in Athens and Georgia after dropping
- 58:05Speaker 1: last night series opener to Oklahoma, leads by a score
- 58:09Speaker 1: of ten to nine. In that Oklahoma's rallied back from
- 58:12Speaker 1: nine to two to pull them within a run at
- 58:15Speaker 1: ten to nine. And then of course there's Texas A
- 58:17Speaker 1: and M in Texas and the Aggies have been red
- 58:20Speaker 1: hot of late. Texas A and M has won three
- 58:24Speaker 1: consecutive series over well they've won. They've won ten of
- 58:32Speaker 1: their last eleven games, and they've won three straight series,
- 58:36Speaker 1: including back to back series on the road against number
- 58:41Speaker 1: one and number two in the country, winning two out
- 58:46Speaker 1: of three at Tennessee. And you heard Geene Watson if
- 58:48Speaker 1: you were listening last hour, discuss how big it was
- 58:54Speaker 1: for Texas A and M after being no hit and
- 58:58Speaker 1: run ruled in the series opener on Friday to come
- 59:02Speaker 1: back and playing a doubleheader on Saturday to escape the rain.
- 59:05Speaker 1: And they won both ends of the double header, including
- 59:07Speaker 1: run ruling Tennessee in that last game. That was huge.
- 59:11Speaker 1: Then they went to Arkansas. Well, they went home and
- 59:14Speaker 1: swept South Carolina, had that crazy game and hit the
- 59:18Speaker 1: two Grand Slams and won that last game to sweep
- 59:21Speaker 1: the series. Then they would go to Arkansas and win
- 59:23Speaker 1: two out of three of the Razorbacks.
- 59:25Speaker 2: Very impressive there.
- 59:26Speaker 1: So, as I mentioned, they have won road series against
- 59:30Speaker 1: the number one and number two teams in the country
- 59:34Speaker 1: and now here they are in Austin facing another number
- 59:37Speaker 1: one team in the country. They're looking for their third
- 59:41Speaker 1: straight road series win over a top two rank school.
- 59:48Speaker 1: And the Aggies had flipped the script. They were actually
- 59:52Speaker 1: sub five hundred. At one point around the midway mark
- 59:54Speaker 1: of the season, they were one and nine in SEC
- 59:59Speaker 1: play and they have turned it around. As I mentioned,
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: they have won ten of their last eleven games and
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: that has gotten them the twenty four and sixteen because
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: they were fourteen and fifteen before getting those wins in
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: Game two in Game three to turn things around. So
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: it's pretty impressive stuff for Texas A and M. They're
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: going with their their veteran left handed Ryan Prager who's
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: two and two with a four to two nine ERA.
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: And you've probably heard the news with regard to Texas
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: that the Longhorns are going to be without Jared Spencer
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: for the rest of the season shoulder injury. He got
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: i think three separate independent medical evaluations and opinions and
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: they all yielded apparently the same result that it's a
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: shoulder injury and he will not be able to return
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: from the shoulder injury.
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: So his season is done.
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: So what that has brought about is the Longhorns have
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: to do a flip of the script and a flipping
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: the rotation and they'll move Ruger Riojas from the Sunday
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: starter to the Friday start. That's why Ruger only threw
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: thirty eight pitches last Sunday and only three innings in
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: the series sweeping clinching win against Auburn because Jim Slasnigl
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: and Max Wiener wanted to have him completely fresh and
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: ready to go for tonight's series opener. So it'll be Ruger,
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: Rio Hassel the man for Texas, and Ryan Prager left hander.
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: In fact, the Aggies are going to go with three
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: left handers over the weekend, three straight lefties, Ryan Prager tonight,
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: Justin Lambkin who's three and four on a four to
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: one three ERA tomorrow and Miles pat Nehw's three and
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: three with a four eight five ERA. And these guys,
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: even though the numbers, a lot of the numbers are not,
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: like incredibly impressive.
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: A lot of that is due to.
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: The difficult they had at the start of SEC play
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: when they started one to nine in conference play. Well
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: that's turned around and now they're posting much better numbers
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: on this and the back of their bullpen is better,
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: and they're hitting the ball well.
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: As we knew.
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: So in fact, I mentioned, you know when Kimball Schuschler
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: hit the home run to end Sunday's game in seven
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: innings with that fourteen to two winterver Auburn actually sit
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: in the home run call. I don't know what else
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: is going on around the SEC, but I know there's
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: nobody more deserving of SEC Player the Week honors than
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: Kimball Schusler. Well, it was partially correct. He did win
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: SEC Co Player of the Week honors. The guy that
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: he shared the honor with is Jace Lobolette, who has
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: also been on a tear of late, and he hit
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: five home runs last week and he one co.
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: Player of the Week.
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: He right now leads the Aggies with fifteen home runs,
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: fifty two RBIs, He's drawn forty three walks, he scored
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: forty eight runs. He has sixty five career home runs.
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: That's an all time Texas A and M record, one
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: hundred and fifty five walks. That's a first in A
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: and M program history. So anyway, there's lots of impressive
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: numbers of late of late that Texas A and M
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: is posting. We'll have more on that coming up as
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: we bring it to you here on a Friday afternoon
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: from UFCU Dish falk Field here on thirteen under the
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: Zone here on a Friday afternoon, getting you ready for
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: a big baseball weekend.
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: We've talked a little bit about it.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: I mentioned that it's an important weekend in the state
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: of Texas, not only on baseball for Texas and Texas
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: A and M, but a couple of other schools meeting
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: head to head this weekend are TCU and Baylor playing
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: in Fort Worth. And even though the Long Words are
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: no longer in the Big Twelve Conference, it's a bit
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: fascinating to see what's going on there because it's a jumble,
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: and on any given well game one or game tuvas series,
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: let alone after the completion of a three game weekend series,
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: you could have a different team leading the standings. Right now,
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: it's West Virginia. They're thirteen and three, Kansas, Arizona and
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: TCU are all twelve and six. There's going to be
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: an uneven amount of games because West Virginia was only
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: able to play one of its three games and still
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: water against Oklahoma State, which is, by the way, been
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: the most stunning surprise this year. The Cowboys, with a
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: preseason choice to win the Big Twelve. They're six and
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: nine in the league and they are eighteen and nineteen overall.
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: The second biggest surprise would be Taxes Tech. You're always
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: to be a contender. The Red Raiders are eight and
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: ten in conference play and they're thirteen and twenty three overall.
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: The only way Texas Tech is going to make it
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: into a regional and the same can be said for
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: Oklahoma State is to first qualify for the Big Twelve
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: tournament and then second win it to get the automatic bid.
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: And I say qualified because only twelve slots of the
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: fourteen baseball playing institutions of the Big Twelve land a
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: spot in the postseason tournament at Globalie Field in Arlington.
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: I said fourteen because remember Colorado and Iowa State do
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: not field baseball programs. The last time Iowa State field
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: of the program I believe was nineteen ninety nine. Colorado
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: hasn't fielded a baseball program since nineteen eighty. They've got
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: a skiing team, but they don't have baseball, So no
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: baseball for Colorado and Iowa State right now. The teams
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: are at the bottom are Utah and BYU, but UCF
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: is very close to it, Houston's very close to it,
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: mistakes not far from that bottom as well. And again
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: the top twelve will advance into that tournament.
- 1:06:05Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: So against that backdrop, TCU is twelve and six in
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: the league, twenty nine to twelve overall. Right now, if
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: you look at tournament projections, they're in the field, and
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: not only in the field. One of the sets of projections,
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: it might be Baseball America, as I pulled that up here,
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: one of the sets of projections, it's not Baseball America,
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: it's D one. Baseball has tc hosting a regional, but
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: they're really kind of on the bubble for that. Jim
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: Slawstangle made a very good point to me the other
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: day when we were recording the pregame interview when he
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: said that there's always a situation where a team is
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: on the bubble. You're either on the bubble to try
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: to get into the tournament in a regional, or you're
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: on the bubble to host a regional, be a top sixteen,
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: or you're on the bubble to be a top eight
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: national seed. There's always and in the case of Texas,
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: may be on the bubble to be the number one
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: overall seed as well. It depending on how they do
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: with the rest of their conference season. Remember, after this
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: weekend against A and M. They go to Arkansas, then
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: they come home for a senior weekend against Florida, and
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: then they finished the regular season in Norman against Oklahoma.
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: Speaking of the Sooners, Georgia just put down Oh You
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: in the night to win ten nine. So in both
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: cases last night and tonight, the winning team built a
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: seven run lead and then held on for dear life.
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: Last night, Oklaoma won the series opener eight six. Today
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: Georgia takes a second game, ten nine. They've got one
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: more game out of that series tomorrow. Keith Morland will
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: be on the call for that, and then he'll fly
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: back and join us for the Sunday broadcast of the
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: game here between Texas and Texas A and M. Ty
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: Harrington will join me for tonight's Carl Roger Wallace will
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: be with me to for tomorrow's call. But in getting
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: back to that TCU Oklahoma TCU Baylor thing, here's tc
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: which right now is projected to host a regional but
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: again it's kind of on the bubble, and it's gonna
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: be very very important for the horn Frogs to have
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: a good weekend at home against Baylor. It's going to
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: be very very important for Baylor to make sure they
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: continue to win to stay away from that bottom part
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: of And they're eight and ten in the league, so
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: they're probably in pretty solid shape to make the Big
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: twelve tournament, but they have designs on making an NC regional.
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: And the Bears are twenty six and fourteen, TCUs twenty
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: nine and twelve. TCU's twelve and six in the conference.
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: Baylor is eight and ten in conference play, so all
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: of that is important stuff, and we'll see how those
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: weekend series go as well. All right, coming up, we're
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: gonna hear from Loggorne's head coach Jim Slasnegle down on
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: the field as well.
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: The Longhorns are down on the field.
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: We're gonna hear from Jim Slastnigle talking about this matchup
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: between Texas and Texas A and M. When we continue
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: on thirteen under the Zone. We welcome you back here
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: to the program. You're a partam you FCU dish fault
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: field on thirteen one hundred the Zone. Texas getting ready
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: to take on Texas A and M. And yesterday Longhorns
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: take coach Jim Slastnigle got a chance of media availability
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: to visit with the media and talk about this big
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: matchup between the Longhorns and the team he used to coach,
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: the Aggies of Texas A and M.
- 1:09:34Speaker 6: Thanks everybody for coming super excited about a weekend ahead.
- 1:09:39Speaker 6: Feel really good about how our team's playing at this point.
- 1:09:43Speaker 6: I thought Tuesday night was a great test for us,
- 1:09:45Speaker 6: and I told him after the game, if we didn't
- 1:09:49Speaker 6: win a game the rest of the season, Tuesday night
- 1:09:51Speaker 6: may be my favorite win of the year. So hopefully
- 1:09:55Speaker 6: we can get some guys with their feet under them,
- 1:09:58Speaker 6: get healthy for the stretch run here and and then
- 1:10:01Speaker 6: you know, obviously having the opportunity to be a part
- 1:10:04Speaker 6: of the rivalry series this weekend, what a great thing
- 1:10:08Speaker 6: for our players and A and m's players to uh
- 1:10:13Speaker 6: to be a part of a Texas and Texas A
- 1:10:14Speaker 6: and M baseball series in the SEC and they'd be
- 1:10:17Speaker 6: the very first one.
- 1:10:18Speaker 7: Wow, what a what a great life experience.
- 1:10:21Speaker 6: So I'm sure this place will be rocking and and
- 1:10:25Speaker 6: I hope we play well.
- 1:10:26Speaker 7: Which is an update on jar A Spencer where you
- 1:10:28Speaker 7: guys are. Yeah, he's on his way back from Houston.
- 1:10:31Speaker 6: We're gonna meet when he gets back, and you'll let
- 1:10:33Speaker 6: us know what he's what he's deciding. I think at
- 1:10:35Speaker 6: some point today as soon as he gets a chance
- 1:10:37Speaker 6: to talk to his family.
- 1:10:39Speaker 5: Other than with Kimball gestured to the dugout last year
- 1:10:42Speaker 5: in the regional what's the biggest memory of like that
- 1:10:44Speaker 5: atmosphere and what that original mat.
- 1:10:46Speaker 7: Over in College Station.
- 1:10:48Speaker 6: My biggest memory, Uh, La Baron pitched really well.
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:10:53Speaker 7: I remember we knew JT.
- 1:10:57Speaker 6: Swung loved to swing at the first pitch of the game,
- 1:10:59Speaker 6: and Prager was having a great year, and I was like,
- 1:11:03Speaker 6: I let him just wanna get the first pitch of
- 1:11:04Speaker 6: the game, and he hit a homer, and then Kimball
- 1:11:06Speaker 6: hit the homer and then of course the weird, weird
- 1:11:08Speaker 6: play at third base. But it was just an awesome game. Uh,
- 1:11:11Speaker 6: incredible atmosphere. To have those two teams play each other
- 1:11:16Speaker 6: in an interregional winners bracket game was great. And uh
- 1:11:21Speaker 6: of course we also got to play in the College
- 1:11:23Speaker 6: World Series that was even better.
- 1:11:24Speaker 7: You know, if if it was.
- 1:11:26Speaker 6: Up to me, these two teams would be cool to
- 1:11:28Speaker 6: meet in Omaha and that's that's the best place to play.
- 1:11:31Speaker 4: Are you ready for this because a few personally.
- 1:11:34Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, I mean I'm you know, I've been I've
- 1:11:37Speaker 6: been around a little bit, and I've been through this before.
- 1:11:40Speaker 6: I had to uh at TEA at A and M
- 1:11:42Speaker 6: the first year, had to coach against tcuh. You know,
- 1:11:46Speaker 6: within a year of leaving there in a in a
- 1:11:48Speaker 6: regional in a regional final, and so you know, this
- 1:11:51Speaker 6: is an SEC series, this is three games versus one.
- 1:11:53Speaker 7: But uh yeah, I mean I'm the game.
- 1:11:58Speaker 6: Uh you let the fans in and everybody else enjoy
- 1:12:02Speaker 6: all the peripheral stuff.
- 1:12:03Speaker 7: Our job, you know, my job is to coach the team.
- 1:12:05Speaker 6: And it's not to coach team any differently on Friday
- 1:12:08Speaker 6: night than I did Tuesday night. And if we win
- 1:12:11Speaker 6: a game, it's it's worth one. It's not worth one
- 1:12:14Speaker 6: point five. And if we lose, it doesn't cost any
- 1:12:16Speaker 6: more than one. So I'm not trying to downplay it.
- 1:12:19Speaker 6: But for my own you ask me, my own personal
- 1:12:21Speaker 6: role in this thing is to coach our team. And
- 1:12:24Speaker 6: I can't get and I'm not going to get caught
- 1:12:26Speaker 6: up in the other stuff general, like the coaching.
- 1:12:28Speaker 3: Perspectives, whether it's injuries or having to go in different
- 1:12:31Speaker 3: environments and environments like this weekend, How does that create
- 1:12:34Speaker 3: coach how does it help bond, especially in the first year.
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: Point.
- 1:12:37Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, I think.
- 1:12:40Speaker 6: Adversity and going through those experiences, the failure of it,
- 1:12:45Speaker 6: the success, the travel, the newness, the anxiety of waiting.
- 1:12:51Speaker 6: There's no anxiety during the gagame. It's just waiting for
- 1:12:54Speaker 6: the game to get here, you know. And so yeah,
- 1:12:57Speaker 6: I mean our team's battle tested. A and M's teams
- 1:12:59Speaker 6: obviously incredibly battle tested. They have championship pedigree from their
- 1:13:02Speaker 6: team last year and then.
- 1:13:04Speaker 7: Got off to a slow start.
- 1:13:06Speaker 6: I never doubted what kind of season they were gonna have,
- 1:13:09Speaker 6: not for one second, and so it doesn't surprise me
- 1:13:12Speaker 6: at all that they're playing well, and you know, we're
- 1:13:15Speaker 6: playing well. And but yeah, I think all those things
- 1:13:18Speaker 6: baseball lends itself to what you have.
- 1:13:20Speaker 7: To go through to bring your team closer together. Do
- 1:13:22Speaker 7: you th chans live there and your players know if.
- 1:13:26Speaker 4: They hate you, How do you, as a head coach
- 1:13:29Speaker 4: keep from being the story because it's a baseball series
- 1:13:32Speaker 4: and that's the.
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: Most important part. How do you keep them level ahead
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: it because they kind of know the history.
- 1:13:37Speaker 6: Of this runs ye, yeah, yeah, I mean we had
- 1:13:40Speaker 6: a I mean, I think it's foolish to put your
- 1:13:42Speaker 6: head in the stand and and not at least address it.
- 1:13:44Speaker 6: I addressed it with our team during the course of
- 1:13:48Speaker 6: this week about you know, if we're gonna talk all
- 1:13:51Speaker 6: year about playing to a standard, not a.
- 1:13:52Speaker 7: Scoreboard, then when you get to these moments, then you
- 1:13:56Speaker 7: better do it.
- 1:13:56Speaker 6: And I thought that that's why I thought Tuesday night
- 1:13:58Speaker 6: was incredible. We had, you know, we were pitching some
- 1:14:01Speaker 6: guys that hadn't pitched in a while. We were in
- 1:14:04Speaker 6: a really tough environment, not as big, but tough.
- 1:14:07Speaker 7: It was tough.
- 1:14:07Speaker 4: Man.
- 1:14:08Speaker 6: Fans were right on you, the students were right, and
- 1:14:10Speaker 6: the Texas State students were right on us. We get
- 1:14:12Speaker 6: down five runs, would have been super easy to cash
- 1:14:15Speaker 6: that in and go home and get ready for this weekend,
- 1:14:18Speaker 6: and these guys kept playing. So uh, to answer your question,
- 1:14:22Speaker 6: I think, you know, this is the ultimate test. And
- 1:14:24Speaker 6: I told him this week would be the ultimate test.
- 1:14:27Speaker 6: But then next week we go to Arkansas.
- 1:14:28Speaker 7: I don't think.
- 1:14:29Speaker 4: I don't.
- 1:14:29Speaker 6: I don't think those fans like this very much either,
- 1:14:31Speaker 6: from what I've been told. I mean, I've had long
- 1:14:33Speaker 6: time Longhorns say that Arkansas fans are tougher on you
- 1:14:37Speaker 6: than the Aggie fans. So and then the last weekend
- 1:14:40Speaker 6: of the season played Oklahoma, so uh, and.
- 1:14:44Speaker 7: Each week you will Oklahoma, same.
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: Act.
- 1:14:49Speaker 6: Your fashion choices are questionable, but but now it's uh,
- 1:14:54Speaker 6: it's great experience, you know, and we may get it.
- 1:14:58Speaker 6: The weekend may not go our away. We'll learn from
- 1:15:00Speaker 6: that too.
- 1:15:01Speaker 4: That's Los Angeles.
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: Since the day you arrived today, What have you.
- 1:15:05Speaker 4: Done specifically could of bond this team to have the
- 1:15:09Speaker 4: outcome of this team play like they are right now
- 1:15:12Speaker 4: being what they did tuesdays? I mean, that's opendon me
- 1:15:15Speaker 4: on probably what you would try to learn.
- 1:15:17Speaker 6: Yeah, well, I was very blessed that coach Pierce had
- 1:15:23Speaker 6: guys like gal Vaughan and Schusler and Flores and Gasparino
- 1:15:27Speaker 6: and Duplantier, dre and and and Jayden and Luke Harrison,
- 1:15:33Speaker 6: guys that they love this school so much and they
- 1:15:36Speaker 6: have such a great passion for leaving it, Max Bulow,
- 1:15:40Speaker 6: leaving it in a as good or better place than
- 1:15:42Speaker 6: they found it. And so that's where it's to me,
- 1:15:45Speaker 6: that's where it all starts. It starts with really good
- 1:15:47Speaker 6: players who have a passion for being better. And then
- 1:15:51Speaker 6: then what you're talking about culture, and that's just a
- 1:15:53Speaker 6: day to day. From the very first day we get here,
- 1:15:56Speaker 6: we set what we want to do, and then each
- 1:15:58Speaker 6: single day we're super intentional. It's the most important thing
- 1:16:02Speaker 6: I do every day is continue to push this massive
- 1:16:06Speaker 6: battleship forward and keep these guys.
- 1:16:09Speaker 7: Accountable, but also keep them confident.
- 1:16:11Speaker 6: And they're confident bunch, and there's no doubt about it.
- 1:16:14Speaker 6: They believe they can win every game and the whole
- 1:16:17Speaker 6: win anyway, or win any way. Mentality has really caught
- 1:16:21Speaker 6: on within within this particular team. And what a great
- 1:16:25Speaker 6: trait to have that when you keep taking blows, you
- 1:16:28Speaker 6: just keep getting off the map.
- 1:16:29Speaker 4: It's gonna be like you working across and seeing Mike over.
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: There, and.
- 1:16:35Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean I've you know, seeing Mike over there.
- 1:16:38Speaker 6: I'm happy for him and his family. You know, he
- 1:16:40Speaker 6: earned the opportunity to be the head coach over there.
- 1:16:42Speaker 6: Will Fox as well, was on our staff last year,
- 1:16:45Speaker 6: and happy for him that he got promoted into a
- 1:16:47Speaker 6: baseball position. But you know, when you coach thirty five years,
- 1:16:52Speaker 6: I mean I've already, for three or four times this
- 1:16:56Speaker 6: year coached against you know, guys that worked with us,
- 1:16:58Speaker 6: or or even players that I coach. So that part
- 1:17:02Speaker 6: of it is fine, you know, it's what's what's a
- 1:17:05Speaker 6: little it's not harder once the game starts. But what's
- 1:17:07Speaker 6: tougher is, you know, is seeing the players that you
- 1:17:11Speaker 6: love and care for so much, but you can't really
- 1:17:14Speaker 6: talk to them or you can't you know, it's not
- 1:17:16Speaker 6: the time and place to to kind of catch up.
- 1:17:18Speaker 6: And we will have our moments, uh when they're finished playing.
- 1:17:22Speaker 6: There's guys from the team last year at A and
- 1:17:24Speaker 6: M that have they've been over here and we've had
- 1:17:27Speaker 6: a good time together and gone to football games and
- 1:17:29Speaker 6: stuff like that. But that's that's the tougher part is
- 1:17:34Speaker 6: I would never wish bad on a guy like Jace
- 1:17:36Speaker 6: lovel At, like I don't want him to play portly,
- 1:17:39Speaker 6: but I do want our team to win.
- 1:17:41Speaker 7: So that's the challenge.
- 1:17:43Speaker 5: Because you know those guys so well, what have you
- 1:17:46Speaker 5: seen that's allowed them to.
- 1:17:47Speaker 8: Turn it around?
- 1:17:48Speaker 4: What are the biggest challenges they'll present?
- 1:17:50Speaker 6: Well, first of all, they've always they've had good starting
- 1:17:52Speaker 6: pitching the whole season. I mean they had, you know,
- 1:17:55Speaker 6: and they've been those guys have been consistent. Preger Lampkin
- 1:17:59Speaker 6: and what's the guy from Long Beach the left the
- 1:18:02Speaker 6: other left him and he's, uh paton yet he they've
- 1:18:06Speaker 6: they've been great. So when you have good starting pitching,
- 1:18:08Speaker 6: you give yourself a chance. I think the you know,
- 1:18:12Speaker 6: I think getting off to a slow start, and guys
- 1:18:14Speaker 6: start to press, and I know Hayden shot and I
- 1:18:18Speaker 6: know Jason, I know Surrell was injured, and and guys
- 1:18:23Speaker 6: that are they just start to press because it means
- 1:18:25Speaker 6: a lot to him. And I said all along, all
- 1:18:28Speaker 6: it's gonna take is one day, one day of them
- 1:18:30Speaker 6: starting to feel confident about themselves. And once that happens,
- 1:18:34Speaker 6: look out and of course getting healthy, getting Currell back
- 1:18:37Speaker 6: uh Lanthen's their lineup, and Bender up feeling better about himself.
- 1:18:42Speaker 6: So and then they had that day at Tennessee and
- 1:18:44Speaker 6: haven't really No one's really slowed him down too much since.
- 1:18:47Speaker 6: So they have they know how to win, and they're
- 1:18:51Speaker 6: certainly they've gone to Arkansas, they've gone to Tennessee. So uh,
- 1:18:56Speaker 6: coming over here is you know they've I don't think
- 1:18:59Speaker 6: they're gonna be I know they're going to be ready
- 1:19:01Speaker 6: to play.
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: Warren's head coach Jim Slasniga. We'll be back to wrap
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: up hour number two. I'm thirteen under the Zone thirty
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: final hour of the program here on thirteen hundred of
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: the Zone. Greig Way with you and glad to be
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: with you here on this final hour of the program.
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: And I actually have a treat tonight, and that is
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: and this is really weird because it's the first time
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: it's happened this season, but Ty Herrinkin's going to work
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: a baseball game with me now, So I'm very glad
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: and and I'm glad for the reasons that you haven't
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: been able to work a baseball game, because you've been
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: You've been a TV mogul and TV personality on the
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: SEC Network plus telecast the Long Horning Game.
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: So I'm really happy for you for that.
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: I like how we've kept it all in the family,
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: whether it's you or Keith or Roger or my car
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: or whoever whoever happens to be the analyst at the time.
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: It's it's it's good. So I'm I'm glad of that.
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: And we've been doing our weekly segment regardless of any
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: of that stuff anyway, So it's it's good.
- 1:20:09Speaker 8: It's been fun. I mean, it's been it's been a
- 1:20:11Speaker 8: little bit different.
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: And what's the biggest difference for you working huh TV
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: as opposed to radio.
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: I bet I know some of them, but I want
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: to hear it.
- 1:20:20Speaker 8: Some of it is And this is not in a
- 1:20:22Speaker 8: bad way because I've I've I've worked with six, maybe
- 1:20:28Speaker 8: seven different play by play guys now okay, and uh
- 1:20:31Speaker 8: so that's part of it. The other piece is the
- 1:20:36Speaker 8: radio part is smaller pieces of conversation because you're having
- 1:20:43Speaker 8: Your part is to describe what they can't see, as
- 1:20:47Speaker 8: opposed as you know it's on TV, they see it,
- 1:20:51Speaker 8: so you can cut. You can keep discussing whatever it
- 1:20:54Speaker 8: is that may be going on.
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: So I have to do the who, what, where, and when,
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: and then you do the why.
- 1:20:58Speaker 8: That's right, and when it's TV, you can kind of
- 1:21:02Speaker 8: keep going even in the conversating. Let's say a foul ball,
- 1:21:05Speaker 8: let's say a pitch gets taken, let's say even a
- 1:21:08Speaker 8: plays made. Sometimes you keep conversating and then you you're still.
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: Talking about it as a pop flyout to left field
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: and folks can see it. So the play by play
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: gud doesn't have to say there's a high fly ball
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: to left field and have to see it. They could
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: see that while you finish a point.
- 1:21:22Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, And I mean, I just that's probably the
- 1:21:27Speaker 8: difference the most, truthfully.
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: And it's not like this is your first time in
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: first year ever doing TV. You've been doing it for
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: years on the Texas State telecast.
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: So yeah, yeah, but yes, that's correct.
- 1:21:38Speaker 8: And that's where I you know, I was probably fifty
- 1:21:42Speaker 8: to fifty working games with you on radio, and then
- 1:21:45Speaker 8: the schedule had it.
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: That it worked out at Texas State.
- 1:21:48Speaker 8: I was able to go down there and do a
- 1:21:50Speaker 8: lot of TV down there and often this year was
- 1:21:53Speaker 8: the most games that Texas State had on the road.
- 1:21:58Speaker 2: Texas was at home and.
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: And then you know, and not like which adds up
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: to you doing a lot more games.
- 1:22:05Speaker 2: That's right.
- 1:22:06Speaker 8: And luckily for me this weekend, I get to work
- 1:22:10Speaker 8: with you because linear TV came in as we all know,
- 1:22:13Speaker 8: and took over the weekends.
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: The names of Tom Hard and Kyle Peterson and Chris
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: Burke and uh yeah.
- 1:22:21Speaker 8: They all came in and took all three games, and
- 1:22:25Speaker 8: but it all worked out anyway. I want to get
- 1:22:28Speaker 8: to work radio with you and too, I got to
- 1:22:30Speaker 8: go to a wedding tomorrow and uh in Houston and Douglender,
- 1:22:34Speaker 8: my longtime college roommate and friend and teammate here at TOUCH.
- 1:22:38Speaker 8: His daughter's getting married. So I'm gonna go to wedding tomorrow,
- 1:22:40Speaker 8: but I'll be back on Sunday to watch the game
- 1:22:44Speaker 8: as a fan and sit and watch a game. Don't
- 1:22:49Speaker 8: do that, do that very often. And so I'm gonna
- 1:22:53Speaker 8: get to do that. And then but it's you know what,
- 1:22:57Speaker 8: So what's interesting about this? They they Linear TV picked
- 1:23:03Speaker 8: up these three games before the season got started.
- 1:23:07Speaker 2: That's right.
- 1:23:07Speaker 8: Then it looked like it was gonna be a who
- 1:23:12Speaker 8: knows what kind of.
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: Series because of what was happening in college ash correct
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: and then somehow and it's been You can see it
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: when you watch the games, but you don't know what
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: was going on behind closed doors or on a bus
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: or whatever happened in Knoxville, Tennessee.
- 1:23:32Speaker 8: That you know that you get no hit, run ruled,
- 1:23:37Speaker 8: your wheels are no longer wobbling.
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: You would assume the wheels were off. That's the complete
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: nator of the season. The complete bottoming out of Texas
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: A and M season was after the Friday night game.
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: And who could have possibly imagined that the flip of
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: the script and completely turning it around.
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: What happened starting the next day with a double banner,
- 1:23:58Speaker 2: no question about it.
- 1:23:59Speaker 8: And now you could look into the future and say
- 1:24:03Speaker 8: when Surrell got back in the lineup, that that was
- 1:24:06Speaker 8: gonna make a difference. Okay, he's played fifteen games now,
- 1:24:10Speaker 8: and in those fifteen games, what has happened.
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: They've they've won. He came into I think.
- 1:24:14Speaker 8: The Alabama Series or something like that, they hit a homer,
- 1:24:18Speaker 8: but they didn't win. They still lost the series or something,
- 1:24:22Speaker 8: and then you know, and they since then, since that
- 1:24:28Speaker 8: the game in Knoxville, man, they'd have been You watch
- 1:24:32Speaker 8: them offensively, they've been really good. They're better. Defensively, they
- 1:24:35Speaker 8: were not. Let's see another piece of this that I
- 1:24:37Speaker 8: don't I think.
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: You you would know it.
- 1:24:39Speaker 8: People that pay attention, close attention to the game they
- 1:24:43Speaker 8: put they didn't play great defense that first month and
- 1:24:46Speaker 8: a half of the season as well.
- 1:24:48Speaker 2: They've cleaned that part of it on the infield up.
- 1:24:52Speaker 8: And it will never know emotionally what unless you were
- 1:24:57Speaker 8: in that bus or in that locker room or in
- 1:24:59Speaker 8: those team meeting, you won't really know what was discussed
- 1:25:02Speaker 8: or how it all transformed.
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: The physical side of it. Getting two guys back was huge.
- 1:25:07Speaker 8: And then the other piece of is uh Moss has
- 1:25:10Speaker 8: been in the bullpen has been pretty.
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: Good, which has helped make a difference, uh for a
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: team who when you look at the eras of the
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: starting pitchers in the record, it's not that impressive though.
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: I mean you were talking a two and two of
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: the four to two nine, a three and four with
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: a four to one three, and the three and three
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: with a four eight five. But as I said on
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: the program earlier, a lot of that's frontloaded from the
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: struggles early in conference.
- 1:25:34Speaker 8: That's right, it's one hundred percent right. And then you
- 1:25:37Speaker 8: know the to me too, Now you know you go
- 1:25:42Speaker 8: through there digging there even more, which I know you
- 1:25:44Speaker 8: have that the eras and the sec are higher than
- 1:25:48Speaker 8: what that is unbelievable.
- 1:25:50Speaker 2: The team era is over six.
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: Yes, and you say, how in the world could they
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: have won seven of their last eight conference games and
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: ten of their last eleven overall. Well, one, I think
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: of the Sunday game against South Carolina outslugging that slam.
- 1:26:05Speaker 2: Yeah, they found it happened. No, that doesn't happen.
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: So they found the way to out slug and then
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: and then there were other games where you know they
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: pitched well enough, but the e R. I would like
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: to have seen what the e RA was after the
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: Friday night run rule loss to Tennessee. What the team
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: e RA was after that Friday night game compared to
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: where it is right now had to be above eight.
- 1:26:28Speaker 2: Yes. Yes, So if you're so, if.
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: You're erasing two full runs off a team e R
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: in a span of eleven, twelve thirteen ball games, you've
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: done something.
- 1:26:41Speaker 8: You've done something, and then and then again they they're
- 1:26:45Speaker 8: depending the ball better if you look at the pitching stats.
- 1:26:49Speaker 8: So one thing I will even with the ERA being
- 1:26:51Speaker 8: a little bit higher, I will say about their stats,
- 1:26:53Speaker 8: whether it's coming off of last year with Max Wiener
- 1:26:56Speaker 8: or a continuation I should I should say for Max
- 1:26:59Speaker 8: and or who they what they're doing now, they throw
- 1:27:02Speaker 8: the ball in the strikes on them. They're starters around
- 1:27:05Speaker 8: that twelve fourteen walks a game, that's not very many
- 1:27:08Speaker 8: with fifty something innings under their belt, and then you
- 1:27:11Speaker 8: go in there. But what they are do, they're going
- 1:27:13Speaker 8: to give up hits. So if they defend the baseball
- 1:27:16Speaker 8: at a higher level, and you're putting the ball in
- 1:27:18Speaker 8: play and you keep defending it, then you got a
- 1:27:21Speaker 8: chance to hold runner your whole games to five runs.
- 1:27:25Speaker 8: So now your offense which is now stretching its legs,
- 1:27:28Speaker 8: and now Jay s lava Lette is really stretching his
- 1:27:32Speaker 8: legs over the last two weeks and not trying to
- 1:27:34Speaker 8: carry the whole team on his shoulders.
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: Yeah, makes a big difference on that. All right, Ty
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: Herring is with me, and in this next segment we're
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: going to talk about the rest of the SEC.
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: Again.
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: Georgia beat Oklahoma today. They moved the start time up
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: by six hours because they're worried about rain their storms
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: in Athens. So it was very similar to last night's game,
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: where Oklahoma built a seven run lead held on in
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: one eight six. Today george have built a seven run
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: avenger up nine to two and held on to win
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: ten to nine. We'll talk about the SEC and about
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: the national scene. As I mentioned, there's another huge series
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: in the state of Texas and it's not even in
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: the SEC. Tonight at ten fort Worth with TCU and Baylor.
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: We'll get to that. We've got a lot more than
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: we'll get to here. On a Friday afternoon again, Texas
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: and Texas A and M first game of the Cotton
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: Holdings Lone Star Showdown Rivalry Series six forty five pre
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: game start time in a seven o'clock first pitch on
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: one oh three point one FM, Austin's eighties station, New York.
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: Can also listen to it on the Texas Longhorns app.
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: You can connect to it through the iHeartRadio app and
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: also online at Texas Longhorns dot com.
- 1:28:40Speaker 2: So more on.
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: This and a lot more coming up when we continue
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: on a Friday afternoon from UFCU, just fogg Field, I'm
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: thirteen under the Zone.
- 1:28:49Speaker 8: Well, all right, dotcha citizens Universe recording, as we have
- 1:28:55Speaker 8: returned to claim here and now.
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: Pop in on the mother I am on this Friday afternoon.
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: I'm thirteen under the Zone Craig Wave joined by the coach,
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: Ty Harrington, who will join us for the game broadcast tonight.
- 1:29:09Speaker 2: Update.
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: Texas Saftball plays Oklahoma in Norman. Game one is at
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: five o'clock this afternoon. That's a crucial series of the
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: long Worns, just behind Texas A and M and just ahead
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: of Oklahoma in the conference standings. That's going to go
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: to the wire and depending on what happens this weekend,
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: we'll see how the big twelve race goes in terms
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: of going to the wire as well, Ty, I don't
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: know with too many people.
- 1:29:36Speaker 2: I don't know of anybody who would.
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: Have said, yes, twelve games left in conference play, Texas
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: will be thirty four and five and they'll have a
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: three game lead in the conference standings. Could you have
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: foreseen that?
- 1:29:49Speaker 8: No, No, no, I don't think. I mean, everybody can see.
- 1:29:54Speaker 8: They want to say they were coming. Sure, yeah, but
- 1:29:58Speaker 8: there's no way. I mean, look when they got off
- 1:30:01Speaker 8: to the first month and a half start, and you
- 1:30:07Speaker 8: could you could see that the older hitters, which is
- 1:30:11Speaker 8: what Jim talked about at the beginning of the year,
- 1:30:13Speaker 8: like he often said, look like what I walked into
- 1:30:17Speaker 8: at an m having the older hitters, and so you
- 1:30:20Speaker 8: could see that, you could see that, you know, there
- 1:30:22Speaker 8: was the defensive side of the game is going to
- 1:30:25Speaker 8: be good. I think now, I don't know what's going
- 1:30:29Speaker 8: to happen this weekend. I think you would at least
- 1:30:31Speaker 8: acknowledge you whether you agree or not, you're entitled. We're
- 1:30:35Speaker 8: all intelegent own thoughts. But to me, one of the
- 1:30:38Speaker 8: two of the biggest pieces of this the guys that
- 1:30:40Speaker 8: have been here before, Grubs has been excellent, not just good,
- 1:30:44Speaker 8: he's been excellent. His demeanor on the mound is so confident,
- 1:30:50Speaker 8: so patient, So I mean just you know, confident might
- 1:30:55Speaker 8: be the best word describe it. And his execution obviously
- 1:30:58Speaker 8: follows his mindset right now. But the second guy for
- 1:31:01Speaker 8: me that has been I would not have got no offense.
- 1:31:06Speaker 8: I don't think I would have said it's the beginning
- 1:31:08Speaker 8: of the year as Luke Harrison m I just.
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: To be as as consistent, yep. I mean he hasn't
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: been dominating by any stretch, hadn't been spectacular, but he's
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: been solid. He's been consistent, getting the long words into
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: the middle innings where they either by then have been
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: able to build a lead or stay close enough for
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: where they could overhaul whoever was in the lead in
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: time to think of the Georgia series in that and
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: then the bullpen has been solid.
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: Enough to hold the water the rest of the way.
- 1:31:37Speaker 8: But he's a big piece of why the bullpen's been
- 1:31:40Speaker 8: able to stand so Friday night it has you know,
- 1:31:44Speaker 8: it's it's.
- 1:31:44Speaker 2: Been really good.
- 1:31:45Speaker 8: Spencer's been good, but he's had moments in the fifth, right,
- 1:31:48Speaker 8: or fifth or sixth they go out goes in and
- 1:31:50Speaker 8: there's valances. So now Saturday becomes stressful because if you
- 1:31:55Speaker 8: got to go to your pen in the second inning
- 1:31:58Speaker 8: or the third inning on a Saturday, you're in trouble.
- 1:32:02Speaker 8: For you might string it out and win that game,
- 1:32:05Speaker 8: but now you've exhausted your pen. Now that rolls into
- 1:32:08Speaker 8: that Sunday roll and that's when the games get really goofy, right,
- 1:32:11Speaker 8: really can get crazy. To me, he has kept them
- 1:32:15Speaker 8: from having to go early in the bullpen on Saturday.
- 1:32:20Speaker 2: Stretch the bullpen, and.
- 1:32:21Speaker 8: Then you know who knows, Flip a coin now you
- 1:32:24Speaker 8: know because now Reojas has been good on Sunday or
- 1:32:27Speaker 8: but in the same breath, you don't.
- 1:32:30Speaker 2: He hasn't stretched it or stretched.
- 1:32:32Speaker 8: Them out, in my opinion, and most coaches will. Most
- 1:32:35Speaker 8: coaches will say they're obviously the Friday night's the big game.
- 1:32:38Speaker 8: Because I've seen coaches give up Friday nights and go,
- 1:32:41Speaker 8: we're not gonna beat their guy. They've got a guy
- 1:32:43Speaker 8: over there, We're not beating him.
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: Let's build it toward the back end of the week.
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: Let's go play Saturday Sunday.
- 1:32:48Speaker 8: Right, So, and I've seen guys do that, but I
- 1:32:52Speaker 8: mean each time I would go, oh, I wonder how
- 1:32:54Speaker 8: that's going to be this Saturday. We I don't wonder
- 1:32:56Speaker 8: how it's going to be this Saturday. It's been pretty good.
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: There were years seasons when Augie would do that.
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: Uh now, not when he'd have like a Taylor youngman
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: going on our Parker French. Everybody else was the gall
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: on Friday night.
- 1:33:09Speaker 2: They're throwing young men we're gonna go through.
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: Or a Parker French or you know, even Nathan Thornhill,
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: you know, you know, those those kinds of guys. But
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: there were seasons when he would build it towards Saturday
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: and Sunday doing that. And and I've been asked this
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: by long worn fans this week, everybody expected the other
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: shoe to drop it. It did officially yesterday that Jared Spencer's
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: out for the year's shoulder injury. So Ruger Riojas flips
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: from Sunday to Friday. And I asked, Jim Schlasney just
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: busied with him a few minutes ago, and we recorded
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: our pregame a conversation for tonight, and and I said,
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: you like Ruger in that role because some people said, well,
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: why don't you just move Harrison to Friday, and then
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: put and then put Ruger. He's been solid enough, why
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: don't you do that? And and put Ruger in. Just
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: move him up one day on Saturday. And the answer
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: pretty much that Schlass has had is emotionally, mentally psychologica,
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: however you want to describe it. Ruger, he feels, and
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: Max Wiener feels is better built for the aura of
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: what the Friday night game is all about as opposed
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: to the Saturday.
- 1:34:15Speaker 2: I would agree with that.
- 1:34:17Speaker 8: And I think also, look, I'm not gonna speak for
- 1:34:21Speaker 8: coach Flash and go okay or Max Wiener when I
- 1:34:24Speaker 8: say this, but there's times when coaches find a guy
- 1:34:27Speaker 8: that's comfortable in that moment, in that day, in that game,
- 1:34:31Speaker 8: and you.
- 1:34:31Speaker 2: Just go, let's he's been so good that let's don't
- 1:34:34Speaker 2: move him. Right.
- 1:34:34Speaker 8: I played on the eighty four team that this is similar.
- 1:34:38Speaker 8: But Jamie Dowdy was hitting in the nine hole, and
- 1:34:41Speaker 8: he was by the end of the year, he.
- 1:34:43Speaker 2: Was chasing the home run record at University.
- 1:34:45Speaker 8: Of Texas, and coach moved him off to the four
- 1:34:48Speaker 8: hole for a couple of games.
- 1:34:49Speaker 2: He didn't do it.
- 1:34:49Speaker 8: He moved him right back, and it was just like
- 1:34:52Speaker 8: so there are coaches who get My last year in nineteen,
- 1:34:56Speaker 8: our best guy was on Saturday. I didn't move he
- 1:35:00Speaker 8: I'm sorry, I'm sorry. Sunday, I'm sorry. He was Picture
- 1:35:02Speaker 8: of the Year on Sunday out of the Sunday slot.
- 1:35:04Speaker 8: I was like, I'm not I don't want to move
- 1:35:05Speaker 8: in there, Like what if we moved on?
- 1:35:07Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: You know who you just described Cole Green, Yes, Picture
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: the Year Sunday starter.
- 1:35:14Speaker 2: I tried, No, I tried.
- 1:35:15Speaker 8: I just I think sometimes there's a comfort level for
- 1:35:18Speaker 8: the player, there's a comfort level for the coach. Let's
- 1:35:21Speaker 8: just let's leave him right there. He's doing good, right,
- 1:35:24Speaker 8: Let's let's just so. And that's why this this weekend
- 1:35:27Speaker 8: is going to be fun again on you know, tomorrow's game,
- 1:35:30Speaker 8: to see how he does match up several left handed bats. Again,
- 1:35:34Speaker 8: some of their better bats are left handed, and so
- 1:35:36Speaker 8: we'll see how they go.
- 1:35:37Speaker 2: Here's the other question I got from fans.
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: Max Grubbs has been so great, why don't you just
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: move him into the rotation? And the answer that I said,
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: without having asked Jim about it, because I hadn't had
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: a chance of the time, was with what he has
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: done on those occasions when Jared Spencer didn't have his
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: best stuff in the middle innings and Max came in
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: and just stabilized everything. That it that it made a
- 1:36:05Speaker 1: big difference. The other question I got for people said, hey,
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: by the way, what was the deal with k Bing?
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: Why didn't he pitch on Tuesday? He always pitches on Tuesday,
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: And so I said, when we talked on Tuesday, you
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: don't know they're entering a different zone. Now guys have
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: pitched well, but you don't know now when now that
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: we do know that Spencer's done, you don't.
- 1:36:27Speaker 2: Know how the rest of the guys are going to respond.
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: And having another arm and a left hander at that
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: at your disposal may speak to what you just talked
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: about about the quandary of Saturday and Sunday if you've
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: got another arm and in this case, a left hander
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: and being available, which is why he didn't pitch Tuesday night,
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: which is why Grayson Sannier, who's had some good outings
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: especially in Kentucky, started, and which is and they were
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: able to piece it together somehow with all of those
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: guys and find it offense to come back and win
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: that ball game on Tuesday night, all the while saving
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: a k bing for any sort of time that they
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: might need him this weekend.
- 1:37:09Speaker 8: Well, this state's back. I'm gonna just I'm guessing now,
- 1:37:14Speaker 8: I don't have nobody else told me anything kind of
- 1:37:17Speaker 8: before I go to the I think this goes back
- 1:37:19Speaker 8: to Riojas coming out of the game earlier last weekend.
- 1:37:23Speaker 8: I think they sensed that, hey, you know, we may
- 1:37:27Speaker 8: need to we may need to overexpose him. He's on
- 1:37:30Speaker 8: short rest, remember, because he pushed up a day to
- 1:37:34Speaker 8: Eastern Kay pushed up a day. And then now you
- 1:37:38Speaker 8: may move one of your guys to the front of
- 1:37:40Speaker 8: the rotation possibly, so let's don't overexhaust him, which is.
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: Why only weekend, which is why only threw thirty eight
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: pitches and slaps, even said and when I just said
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: to him, that went into his mind. Not when they
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: made the move to move Ruger up. That went into
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: his mind as Jared Spencer walked off the mound on
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: Thursday day night, that they were going to have to
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: do some shuffling and something because they knew, like he said,
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: he didn't know at the time that that Jared was
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: done for the year. In fact, he even told us
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: on the post game, he said, he's a little sore,
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: it'd be all right. They never heard a discernible pop
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: or anything like that. Jared didn't feel anything weird or strange.
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: It was just a little sore, and they thought, okay,
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: he's coming back a day early. He's a little sore,
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: he'll be okay. But his law said, even if he's
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: quote unquote okay, and maybe it's a slight strain, you
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: know he's not gonna pick next weekend. That's right, So
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: you got to start making plans.
- 1:38:32Speaker 2: Nine percent, So go back to now.
- 1:38:35Speaker 8: To me, this is part of why I think Jim
- 1:38:38Speaker 8: is the best, one of the best, if not the best,
- 1:38:39Speaker 8: in our business, is because he's a forward thinker. He's
- 1:38:44Speaker 8: a continual, you know, progressive thinker. In his mind, it
- 1:38:48Speaker 8: was already translating and communicating his Okay, now, wait a minute, Well,
- 1:38:53Speaker 8: if that's real, and he we know that, and I
- 1:38:56Speaker 8: agree with you, I know he probably knew that he
- 1:38:59Speaker 8: was not going to throw this weekend right now.
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: He said, even in the best case scenario, if you
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: moved him back a couple of days, it's.
- 1:39:06Speaker 8: Still wasn't gonna be still gonna be Friday.
- 1:39:08Speaker 2: It was not gonna be Friday.
- 1:39:10Speaker 8: So that started that day and then all of a sudden,
- 1:39:13Speaker 8: if you watch how they now, that's also confidence, right,
- 1:39:16Speaker 8: and then and your staff that week to finish off
- 1:39:19Speaker 8: that weekend last weekend conference wise, right, So he had hits.
- 1:39:23Speaker 8: You know what we've got. I'm sure they sat in
- 1:39:25Speaker 8: there in the conversation and the dougout going, hey, coach, look,
- 1:39:28Speaker 8: we we've got enough bullets to get through this this weekend.
- 1:39:31Speaker 8: We've got in a bullpen, we've got enough guys. But
- 1:39:33Speaker 8: you know, we've got our six guys, which is what
- 1:39:35Speaker 8: they've been kind of rallying around six seven guys on
- 1:39:39Speaker 8: the mount. He goes, well, we've got our guys. Let's
- 1:39:40Speaker 8: let's do it, and let's get it set up. We
- 1:39:42Speaker 8: know he's not gonna be able to throw. Let's get
- 1:39:44Speaker 8: Ruger set up to go into the Friday game with
- 1:39:46Speaker 8: the Aggies at home. And so they started translating. They
- 1:39:50Speaker 8: rolled the dice in in uh sant Marcus Kay being
- 1:39:55Speaker 8: who has been really good on Tuesdays, were good enough
- 1:39:57Speaker 8: on Tuesdays. Let's hey, let's let's it's take them out.
- 1:40:00Speaker 8: We may need him against the Aggies. It's a conference series.
- 1:40:04Speaker 8: And we need to get some We now are forcing
- 1:40:07Speaker 8: ourselves to put some other guys on the mound. And
- 1:40:09Speaker 8: you saw guys go out Tuesday night, I did you
- 1:40:11Speaker 8: And Sam Marcus that had done not a ton of innings,
- 1:40:14Speaker 8: not a ton of.
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: Work, had not pitched much on Tuesday. Connor McCreery had
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: barely seen the field.
- 1:40:20Speaker 2: That's right, Yeah, that's right.
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: And Drew Rerick hadn't pitched my Cody Howard winds up
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: getting the win, that's right. And it was his first
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: time to pitch in the ball game since March twenty first.
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: It was the first time for Hudson Hamilton to pitch
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: in the game since March eleven, six weeks.
- 1:40:36Speaker 2: We're talking.
- 1:40:36Speaker 8: Yeah, now you're gonna see those guys again Tuesday if
- 1:40:39Speaker 8: they don't get used for some reason partially this weekend.
- 1:40:42Speaker 2: Not over exposive for being.
- 1:40:45Speaker 8: So they'll be used on Tuesday. But what that does
- 1:40:47Speaker 8: is that that gave them being for this weekend. Who
- 1:40:50Speaker 8: can use his breaker on the left tended hitters because
- 1:40:53Speaker 8: they have you know, it's on that tended hitters in
- 1:40:55Speaker 8: this lineup that are a challenge and you at least
- 1:40:57Speaker 8: feel better about Well, let's go at and whatever breaker
- 1:41:00Speaker 8: and let's go to you know, armside, I'm sorry, extension
- 1:41:03Speaker 8: side fastballs, third base side, make them empty their barrels
- 1:41:05Speaker 8: the other way.
- 1:41:06Speaker 2: And so I felt like that when.
- 1:41:09Speaker 8: They did that, or like, we've got enough guys were
- 1:41:12Speaker 8: we know the ballpark in Texas State as an offensive park.
- 1:41:15Speaker 2: We're older hitters, let's go out score them.
- 1:41:18Speaker 8: And it just happened that it worked out that way
- 1:41:20Speaker 8: late in the game, it worked out that way for them.
- 1:41:23Speaker 8: And then to me, one of the guys that I
- 1:41:25Speaker 8: think you and I talked about this too, one of
- 1:41:27Speaker 8: the guys to me that I felt like, was gonna
- 1:41:31Speaker 8: be possibly valuable to this team. But he hadn't He
- 1:41:34Speaker 8: kind of had done it, hadn't done it, kind of
- 1:41:36Speaker 8: done was Burns.
- 1:41:38Speaker 2: Kind of done it.
- 1:41:39Speaker 8: Then he did it on the road Kentucky, Kentucky. That's right,
- 1:41:43Speaker 8: even though he took the loss, but he was he
- 1:41:46Speaker 8: threw the ball inning, that's right. He threw the ball good.
- 1:41:50Speaker 8: And to me, he was that guy's like, golly, when's that?
- 1:41:52Speaker 8: When's that guy gonna really appear?
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: When when is that?
- 1:41:55Speaker 2: And now you don't have a choice. And he goes
- 1:41:57Speaker 2: out there Tuesday night and was wamm bam.
- 1:41:59Speaker 8: Game over right, any game that was Look, it was
- 1:42:02Speaker 8: a tugger war, both teams going back and forth.
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: When's the last time you worked a game that had
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: two Grand Slams in it.
- 1:42:11Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:42:12Speaker 8: I don't know if I ever I don't know, I
- 1:42:14Speaker 8: don't know if I ever had. And I've been involved
- 1:42:16Speaker 8: in a game coaching wise, but not not to that.
- 1:42:18Speaker 8: And I mean it was just like, I don't know,
- 1:42:21Speaker 8: I don't know.
- 1:42:21Speaker 2: The crazy game.
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: When you think about this, things like, uh, you know,
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: I neither Keith nor I nor anybody else that I
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: would know would be grudge Joanah Williams for trying to
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: get the second on that ball he scorched and it
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: took a perfect throw and did a one hop and
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: a perfect throw from Brightfield to get him, and it did.
- 1:42:42Speaker 2: It was a great It was a great play.
- 1:42:44Speaker 8: Uh.
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: You have two outs of the plate the Texas statement.
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: Once on a sharply struck ground ball that Florest was
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: able to snag and come home.
- 1:42:52Speaker 2: That was a big out.
- 1:42:53Speaker 1: And then obviously the ball that just trickled a few
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: feet away and Galvan's able to flip underhand, and then
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: the tag from Cody Howard was down to get to
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: to get the out.
- 1:43:02Speaker 2: Yep, that was what the basis loaded.
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: Yeah, and with two outs and was more up.
- 1:43:08Speaker 2: He was up. He was right.
- 1:43:10Speaker 8: I think he was up because because he as he'd
- 1:43:13Speaker 8: already hit the Grand Slam. And I don't know anyway,
- 1:43:16Speaker 8: I think they were in the middle part of the
- 1:43:18Speaker 8: order if I remember right.
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: Yeah, because it was the bottom part of the order
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: to end the game, and that was in the eighth
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: when that happened that ninety and so there was a
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: lot of it.
- 1:43:25Speaker 8: To me, the play Floras made was a dynamic, which
- 1:43:29Speaker 8: if you're a long warm fan, you're getting used to it.
- 1:43:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I did, be honest with me.
- 1:43:33Speaker 8: And now if you ask Jonah Williams, I would assume
- 1:43:35Speaker 8: if he if he took he thought that proble ball
- 1:43:38Speaker 8: was probably out after he got closer to first base,
- 1:43:41Speaker 8: not when he first hit it, but after he got
- 1:43:42Speaker 8: a little bit closer, and then all of a sudden
- 1:43:45Speaker 8: when it hits the gear that he went into was like, I.
- 1:43:50Speaker 2: Mean, just like I don't know, it was like warp speed.
- 1:43:53Speaker 2: He was flying.
- 1:43:55Speaker 8: To your point about how good the throw was and
- 1:43:57Speaker 8: to play off the off the fence to get him
- 1:44:00Speaker 8: second face. Well, I gotta be honest with ye. I
- 1:44:03Speaker 8: was shocked that they didn't go look at it. I
- 1:44:06Speaker 8: thought he was safe. I thought his hand went around
- 1:44:09Speaker 8: the tag, or one of the other went around it,
- 1:44:12Speaker 8: or it was close enough that.
- 1:44:13Speaker 2: But you know, anyway, a back and forth game.
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: Is Alan Shibley that good an outfielder. He's the one
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: who made the throat.
- 1:44:19Speaker 8: Yeah, but you remember now, it doesn't have the Texas
- 1:44:24Speaker 8: State Stadium. The fence doesn't have the deeper angle like
- 1:44:28Speaker 8: here is three twenty five, and you start describing the
- 1:44:30Speaker 8: field before the game street twenty five, but it jets
- 1:44:33Speaker 8: out to three forty probably pretty quickly, pretty quickly.
- 1:44:36Speaker 2: It doesn't do that there. Yeah, it's pretty symmetrically. Yeah,
- 1:44:39Speaker 2: that's right. So you don't have that the deeper alleys
- 1:44:42Speaker 2: and so.
- 1:44:43Speaker 8: And and subsequently, when the ball bounces off this fence,
- 1:44:46Speaker 8: it's going one a different direction. There, it has a
- 1:44:49Speaker 8: chance that it's gonna ricochet and bounce right to you.
- 1:44:51Speaker 8: And now obviously it has something not taking anything away
- 1:44:54Speaker 8: from Shibley because it was a tremendous play, but I've
- 1:44:57Speaker 8: seen a lot of guys thrown out from right field
- 1:45:00Speaker 8: and to second base on the line in the air.
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: Throw guys with less speed than Jona Williams, Yes, and
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: then Jonah and he gets Jonah there.
- 1:45:08Speaker 2: So was that of a play all right? Again?
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: Like I said, we're gonna look at the national scene
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: for college baseball leading up to this series opener between
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: Texas and Texas A and M. When we continue from
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: UFCU Diish falk Field, I'm thirteen under the zone here
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: on a Friday afternoon from UFCU Dish falk Field, and
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: continue with Ty Harrington here. As the long words go
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: through batting practice, long one's going to face three left
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: handers at least as starters for Texas A and M.
- 1:45:36Speaker 2: How do you see that affecting?
- 1:45:38Speaker 1: Obviously, Adrian Rodriguez unfortunately's only able to hit from the
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: left side. So I don't know how much if he's
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: going to be in the lineup or how much or
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: that sort of thing. I don't I don't know how
- 1:45:47Speaker 1: old that will be. But it's three left handers are
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: facing tonight and tomorrow afternoon and Sunday after that.
- 1:45:53Speaker 2: You know that this has been years ago.
- 1:45:58Speaker 8: I had two freshmen and a junior or something like
- 1:46:00Speaker 8: theyver all I was starting three left handers. Frank Anderson,
- 1:46:04Speaker 8: who was in the pitching coach here and I ran
- 1:46:07Speaker 8: into each other, and Frank and I've known each other
- 1:46:08Speaker 8: for a really long time, and he questioned me, He goes,
- 1:46:13Speaker 8: why are you starting three left handers?
- 1:46:15Speaker 2: It was a question of you know what church is
- 1:46:17Speaker 2: the reason?
- 1:46:18Speaker 8: And well I said, I said, well, Frank, first of all,
- 1:46:20Speaker 8: they're probably my three best strike throwers.
- 1:46:23Speaker 2: They just happened to be left handed.
- 1:46:25Speaker 8: And he said does he what effect do you think
- 1:46:28Speaker 8: it has on the other team or what effect do
- 1:46:30Speaker 8: you you know? And he goes, do you worry about
- 1:46:33Speaker 8: you know, the left handed hitters seeing the same thing
- 1:46:36Speaker 8: over and over and repeated three games in a row,
- 1:46:38Speaker 8: and we went it was a forty five minute discussion
- 1:46:41Speaker 8: about it. And if that that three rotation of left
- 1:46:46Speaker 8: handed broke up about oh, week five or six, and
- 1:46:50Speaker 8: the one guy, a freshman, didn't you know how that
- 1:46:52Speaker 8: it just changes?
- 1:46:53Speaker 5: Right?
- 1:46:53Speaker 8: I mean, you know you're starting rotations about his flood?
- 1:46:57Speaker 8: Is his fluid as a top twenty in college baseball historically?
- 1:47:00Speaker 4: Right?
- 1:47:00Speaker 8: And but it was interesting that he asked me that,
- 1:47:03Speaker 8: and the answer became for me a little bit later on.
- 1:47:07Speaker 8: The majority a lot of college baseball's best hitters are
- 1:47:12Speaker 8: left handed. A lot of the majority of the middle
- 1:47:15Speaker 8: of a lineup in college baseball is left handed. So
- 1:47:19Speaker 8: I felt like that if I was starting three left handers,
- 1:47:23Speaker 8: maybe it made those guys think about it.
- 1:47:25Speaker 2: Maybe it got into their head.
- 1:47:26Speaker 8: If they had a bad night on Friday night, they
- 1:47:29Speaker 8: didn't like you know, maybe they were trying to change.
- 1:47:31Speaker 8: I don't know, like I just I did. It did
- 1:47:33Speaker 8: not bother me, and I actually liked it. Now, the
- 1:47:36Speaker 8: flip side of it is we talk about on not
- 1:47:40Speaker 8: the flip side. Let me finish that side of it first.
- 1:47:42Speaker 8: We talk about the matchups all the time. We don't
- 1:47:45Speaker 8: talk about the right right matchup as much as we
- 1:47:48Speaker 8: talk about the left left matchup. And that's just the
- 1:47:51Speaker 8: way baseball is, and that's the way it's always been.
- 1:47:53Speaker 8: In the averages, go down left on left, historically go
- 1:47:57Speaker 8: down left on left occasionally.
- 1:47:59Speaker 2: Who was it was unity, I wasn't, kidd Who was
- 1:48:01Speaker 2: it a year ago? Two years ago? That was left handed?
- 1:48:04Speaker 2: He was hit It wasn't.
- 1:48:06Speaker 8: Yeah, he was hitting as high now he runs some
- 1:48:08Speaker 8: of that. He was running some of that average right.
- 1:48:11Speaker 8: And but so it is a challenge and for I
- 1:48:16Speaker 8: was just when you and I were looking at I
- 1:48:17Speaker 8: was watching Rodriguez take VP. You know, he was hitting
- 1:48:19Speaker 8: left handed, and I was thinking to myself, I wonder
- 1:48:21Speaker 8: if he's gonna move over to the right side, but
- 1:48:23Speaker 8: I guess not this weekend.
- 1:48:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:48:26Speaker 8: Yeah, And so he's obviously would be better off if
- 1:48:29Speaker 8: he could go to the other side of the plate
- 1:48:30Speaker 8: right handed, because I do think it can. It can
- 1:48:33Speaker 8: have a fan in fact, because prayer is also the
- 1:48:36Speaker 8: to the prayer. And then, uh, what's the second guy
- 1:48:40Speaker 8: they'll start tomorrow? They are they are breaking ball heavy guys.
- 1:48:46Speaker 8: They're breaking ball heavy guys. So if they're change up
- 1:48:49Speaker 8: left handed pitchers, if their best pitchure is a change up,
- 1:48:52Speaker 8: then you'd leave your left handed hitters in there. Because
- 1:48:54Speaker 8: a lot of old school coaches would say they pit
- 1:48:57Speaker 8: leet handed pitchers don't like having to execute a left
- 1:49:00Speaker 8: handed change up to the third base side of the play.
- 1:49:03Speaker 8: They're historically doing it to the right handed hitters on
- 1:49:06Speaker 8: the first base side.
- 1:49:06Speaker 2: They don't I don't like going back across.
- 1:49:09Speaker 8: They don't like going extension side back across. So having
- 1:49:13Speaker 8: said that, some guys would take Wayne Graham would take
- 1:49:16Speaker 8: a left handed hitter and put him in the lineup.
- 1:49:19Speaker 8: If your guy was a left handed changeup guy, to
- 1:49:21Speaker 8: take that pitch away. Now you were narrowed down to
- 1:49:23Speaker 8: two pitches against your left handed hitters. So there's there's
- 1:49:27Speaker 8: starts of going now. Like I said, name Cannon. If
- 1:49:29Speaker 8: they're more breaker heavy guys than they are change up,
- 1:49:32Speaker 8: they have it. But I will tell you what you
- 1:49:34Speaker 8: will see this weekend might be one of the best
- 1:49:37Speaker 8: change ups in college baseball. And in command of the
- 1:49:39Speaker 8: change up as Moss. It is any count at any
- 1:49:43Speaker 8: right hitter, left handed hit, it does not matter. And
- 1:49:46Speaker 8: to back it up, and he's he's probably I bet you,
- 1:49:49Speaker 8: and I don't know. I don't have in front of
- 1:49:51Speaker 8: me the data. I bet you he's seventy five percent
- 1:49:54Speaker 8: change up. There, seventy percent change up. Well, the ninety
- 1:49:57Speaker 8: five min our heater behind it. Wo, but it is
- 1:50:01Speaker 8: change up. He'll throw a change straight change up and
- 1:50:03Speaker 8: then he gets that finger in front of that thumb
- 1:50:05Speaker 8: underneath it and I'm sorry, in front of it and a.
- 1:50:08Speaker 2: Man and it'll disappear. Wow. And so he'll throw two
- 1:50:12Speaker 2: different types this week.
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: And I mentioned TC's playing Baylor in Fort Worth and
- 1:50:20Speaker 1: is like you said about check the rankings every week.
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: Check the standings every week in the Big Twelve. Now
- 1:50:24Speaker 1: West Virginia is on top, but they have an uneven
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: amount of games. They're only able to play one of
- 1:50:28Speaker 1: their three games in still Water, and I think unfortunately
- 1:50:30Speaker 1: that's a disadvantage for West Virginia. You'd say that they
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: didn't play the other two games in Stillwater. Oklahoma State
- 1:50:37Speaker 1: struggling this year. So West Virginia is thirteen to three,
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: so there's going to be an uneven amount of games.
- 1:50:42Speaker 1: But the three teams Kansas, Arizona and tc are all
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: twelve and six. TCU comes off losing a series at
- 1:50:48Speaker 1: Central Florida, which is struggling to make the tournament field.
- 1:50:51Speaker 1: Because remember only the top twelve make the Big twelve
- 1:50:54Speaker 1: tournament field. The other two schools since Colorado and I
- 1:50:57Speaker 1: was stay, don't field baseball programs. There's fourteen baseballing UH
- 1:51:01Speaker 1: schools in the Big twelve, and UH they're trying to
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: make sure they're in the field. They dropped two or
- 1:51:05Speaker 1: three on the road. Now they're home and they're playing Baylor.
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: Baylor has been up and down and up and down.
- 1:51:09Speaker 1: They're eight and ten in the league going in there,
- 1:51:12Speaker 1: but you've got some in Kansas comes off sweeping Kansas
- 1:51:16Speaker 1: State after really struggling. I got swept in Fort Worth,
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: and UH dropped two out of three in another series.
- 1:51:21Speaker 2: It's hard to figure out that league.
- 1:51:23Speaker 8: Early in the year, I thought K State was the
- 1:51:27Speaker 8: team that everybody I saw him early in UH in
- 1:51:30Speaker 8: Arlington had watched them. And then they went on ah,
- 1:51:34Speaker 8: you know, the first month of February and half of March,
- 1:51:36Speaker 8: and I was like, you know what, they're physical, They're
- 1:51:38Speaker 8: good enough on the mound, and I think they went
- 1:51:40Speaker 8: to Lubbock and watch which, as it turned out, you know,
- 1:51:43Speaker 8: Texas not very good. And and so I was kind
- 1:51:46Speaker 8: of like, K State maybe is that team? And then
- 1:51:48Speaker 8: the name I didn't know it was West Virginia. That's right,
- 1:51:50Speaker 8: that's right. The team I didn't know much about was
- 1:51:53Speaker 8: and maybe just assume because Mazie wasn't there anymore, Andy
- 1:51:56Speaker 8: wasn't coaching anymore, it was West Virginia.
- 1:51:58Speaker 2: But West Virginia does what West Virginia always does.
- 1:52:01Speaker 1: They open the season running away from the home state weather, right,
- 1:52:06Speaker 1: they go chasing the sun. So they play in Myrtle
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: Beach or they play in Florida. They've even played in Arizona,
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: but mainly on the East coast in the South, so
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: they can get some games. And that's why they've only
- 1:52:14Speaker 1: lost five ball games. But there aren't PI in that
- 1:52:17Speaker 1: great and but they won the conference games they have
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: to win. They're thirteen and three right now. Arizona's been
- 1:52:23Speaker 1: up and down. Kansas State got back on the roll
- 1:52:25Speaker 1: before being swept by Kansas. That's why say, go figure
- 1:52:28Speaker 1: this out. Arizona State has been up and down. Baylor
- 1:52:30Speaker 1: won two out of three at Arizona and dropped two
- 1:52:33Speaker 1: out of three at home to Houston.
- 1:52:35Speaker 2: Figure that out.
- 1:52:36Speaker 8: You're not gonna and I will say this because you know,
- 1:52:38Speaker 8: Texas State went in there the Tuesday before you have
- 1:52:41Speaker 8: aged came in and beat them up on a Tuesday,
- 1:52:45Speaker 8: I mean really just beat them up. And so you
- 1:52:48Speaker 8: don't know what picture is missing. You don't know what
- 1:52:51Speaker 8: guys down. You know, men, we know the dynamic here
- 1:52:56Speaker 8: because you're respenter being out. We all know that most
- 1:52:58Speaker 8: people do because it's such a highly publicize you know,
- 1:53:01Speaker 8: program number one and number one in the country. But
- 1:53:03Speaker 8: then in near the Friday night guy, everybody in the
- 1:53:04Speaker 8: world's gonna hear about it, yep. But you don't know
- 1:53:07Speaker 8: what that looks like at Case State. You don't know
- 1:53:09Speaker 8: what that looked like at Beata.
- 1:53:10Speaker 2: I know that.
- 1:53:10Speaker 8: I know that the last three weeks, four weeks or
- 1:53:13Speaker 8: last month, Bader started giving up more runs than what
- 1:53:15Speaker 8: they were doing earlier.
- 1:53:16Speaker 2: In the year.
- 1:53:17Speaker 8: And you know, they had a little bit better I
- 1:53:18Speaker 8: thought they had better arms this year going into the season.
- 1:53:21Speaker 8: So I don't we don't know what they've done it,
- 1:53:22Speaker 8: but it is that conference. Are you talking about fluid
- 1:53:27Speaker 8: as you are? You couldn't mind you. We're gonna look
- 1:53:30Speaker 8: up in three weeks and there's no tonne what it's.
- 1:53:32Speaker 2: Gonna look like.
- 1:53:32Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, go and figure that out. Like I said,
- 1:53:34Speaker 1: it's gonna be It's gonna be a Derby all the
- 1:53:36Speaker 1: way to wire. All right, we've got one more segment
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: of the program to go, tying. I'd be back to
- 1:53:39Speaker 1: wrap it up. As we continue from UFC Yudish Fowk Field.
- 1:53:41Speaker 1: I'm thirteen under the zone. We get ready to wrap
- 1:53:43Speaker 1: it up from here at UFCU just fog Field with
- 1:53:46Speaker 1: the longhorns taking doting practice right now. Well, the guys
- 1:53:51Speaker 1: taking swings right now. Hit one of the boomingest home
- 1:53:55Speaker 1: runs we've seen this here, the one that Casey Borba
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: hit the other night that just flat out crushed it
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: off of that back wall.
- 1:54:04Speaker 2: Yes, and that's not common. I mean they hit one year.
- 1:54:09Speaker 8: No, it's just not you know what you was interesting.
- 1:54:13Speaker 8: I think you'll agree with me on this. The majority
- 1:54:16Speaker 8: of his homers or pull side, yep. And that was
- 1:54:19Speaker 8: when he hit it, and I mean he got full
- 1:54:22Speaker 8: extension and it was like he was lined up, I'm
- 1:54:25Speaker 8: hitting this ball the other way or I'm gonna stay
- 1:54:27Speaker 8: on it one or the other. And he got to
- 1:54:29Speaker 8: the bottom middle of the baseball and it just kept
- 1:54:33Speaker 8: going and kept going. And I mean that's not an
- 1:54:36Speaker 8: easy part of the park to hit a homer.
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: There's a reason teams shift way over for him. Yes, yeah, No,
- 1:54:42Speaker 1: one shift over to the other side because to to
- 1:54:45Speaker 1: the left side, because they're expecting him to pull pull
- 1:54:48Speaker 1: the ball. And then and then one of the lesser
- 1:54:53Speaker 1: mile per hour hits, but was one of the bigger
- 1:54:56Speaker 1: hits of the ball game. Is the guy at the
- 1:54:58Speaker 1: play right now, Gasparino, who's had big hits, but he
- 1:55:00Speaker 1: hit that little blue fly and keep mentioned that, Uh,
- 1:55:04Speaker 1: it was kind of a it was a difficult ball
- 1:55:08Speaker 1: for I'm looking for him now, Samsung qu to pick
- 1:55:13Speaker 1: up because he started back and then about he.
- 1:55:15Speaker 8: Started back because you're used to Gasparino took a big
- 1:55:19Speaker 8: swing at it. Yep, wasn't It wasn't a soft out
- 1:55:21Speaker 8: of balanced sling. It was an imbalanced sling. He just
- 1:55:24Speaker 8: capped it and caught.
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: Off the end of the bat and so by the
- 1:55:26Speaker 1: time he got to it, dropped in and kept the
- 1:55:28Speaker 1: inning alive and got run home. That sort of thing. So,
- 1:55:31Speaker 1: all right, the uh, let me ask you this. There's
- 1:55:36Speaker 1: four weekend series left for this team, and none of
- 1:55:38Speaker 1: them are going to be easy. Florida has been hot
- 1:55:40Speaker 1: of late. They took two or three of Mississippi State.
- 1:55:42Speaker 1: So the last home series, the senior weekend series, that'll
- 1:55:46Speaker 1: be Florida here, and then you've got three rival series
- 1:55:51Speaker 1: end the season with OU. They go to Arkansas next
- 1:55:53Speaker 1: weekend and obviously these guys here at Texas A and M.
- 1:55:57Speaker 2: So the question is, as a coach, what do you
- 1:55:59Speaker 2: do to keep your guys.
- 1:56:02Speaker 1: Level consistent but but but up and spired enough? How
- 1:56:05Speaker 1: do you strike the balance with all of that?
- 1:56:06Speaker 8: Well, I would tell you that this that part of
- 1:56:10Speaker 8: Jim slash Nagel's magic and influence is they have a
- 1:56:17Speaker 8: mental coach and Brian Kane, who's really good. He's been
- 1:56:20Speaker 8: with you know, he's worked with Jim for since he
- 1:56:22Speaker 8: was way back at TCU. We had him for two
- 1:56:24Speaker 8: years with us, and he works with Brian works with a.
- 1:56:27Speaker 2: Lot of people.
- 1:56:28Speaker 8: My point is they they stay so engaged in their routines.
- 1:56:33Speaker 8: How many times, DEVI, I ass you this, How many
- 1:56:35Speaker 8: times did Jim slash n Angle use the word routine
- 1:56:37Speaker 8: around you? Yeah? Yeah, Sai right, So he he thrives
- 1:56:41Speaker 8: in and his players and they thrive in that routine
- 1:56:45Speaker 8: and it keeps their emotions at at a level you
- 1:56:48Speaker 8: know for them and in checks not the right word,
- 1:56:51Speaker 8: but it helps them stay in that moment through their routines.
- 1:56:56Speaker 1: Uh, I just robbed you in an hour of your day.
- 1:56:58Speaker 1: You're okay with that? And still doing a ballgame.
- 1:57:00Speaker 2: Oh, I'll be fun, you know that? All right? It
- 1:57:02Speaker 2: comes to college baseball, I'm in.
- 1:57:04Speaker 1: Ty Harrington is all in. He'll be here with us tonight.
