- 2:27that sounds exciting. You call losing your money exciting, Patsy, You're right,
- 2:30but I'm not going out there for the front of it. Oh,
- 2:32I suppose you'd rather go fishing. I certainly would, and I'd rather fish
- 2:36for fish than for a murderer. Now for the case of the missing piano
- 2:45player, Today's thrilling Nick Carter Adventure, brought to you by All Dutch Cleanser.
- 2:51Our story begins in the roulette room of the gambling ship, which is
- 2:53anchored off the Atlantic coast. Several customers are gathered about the large roulette table
- 2:59as the croupier for Paris to spin the wheel. Now more, Brett's lady,
- 3:02can that call? No more? Hey? Bill? Stop playing a
- 3:10minute? Yeah, Gus, no more music. Boss wants to see you
- 3:15in his office. Oh okay, Gus, what's wrong? Come on,
- 3:21what's wrong? Gus? Can't you tell me? Boss will talk about that
- 3:27inside Bill? Okay, Hello, Edwards. You you wanted to see me,
- 3:34mister Simmons, Yes, why haven't you been following my orders? I
- 3:38was hired to play the piano, not the customers. You know what you
- 3:42were supposed to do when you took the job. I took the job because
- 3:45I needed it. But I've been thinking it over and I've decided that a
- 3:47crooked Roulett wheel is not in my line. You knew the wheel was fixed
- 3:51when we hired you. It's why you was hired. Now you're welchin on
- 3:54the deal. Now I want to know why. Well, I got a
- 3:58sister to take care of what's that to us? Just this, mister duchess
- 4:02Iman, I've decided to quit. Don't you know nobody quits this record once
- 4:06he's in it. I just want to get out of here. My sister's
- 4:10a swell gallon. I just can't afford to stay around here and end up
- 4:13behind the eight ball. You're behind the eight ball right now, Edwards,
- 4:16and it's mighty black too. I don't want to take care of things.
- 4:21Sure, boss, Sure, what are you gonna do? You're going for
- 4:29a little walk, Edwards, A little walk with guys up to the bower
- 4:34of the ship. Perhaps, yes, Nick, if I finished with our
- 4:48case history, don't worry, mister Carter. They'll all be nicely typed through
- 4:51medical filing before you go away on your vacation. I don't see why I
- 4:56had to go. Someone at the door, Nick, I'll go, thanks,
- 5:00Patsy Homicide Sergeant Matheson. Oh hello, Maddy? Oh hi? And
- 5:12Nick? What cooks me? I'm off for a vacation. Fishing guess called
- 5:15to say that Patsy will know where I am if anything develops that requires my
- 5:18attention, it won't. Where are you going, Sandy Point? I wish
- 5:23I was going along with you, so do I. Maddy, Well,
- 5:26I'll be seeing you, okay, Nick, have fun, Nick. This
- 5:29is mister John Ridden already do mister Ridden sit down? Thank you. Mister
- 5:33Riedden has a problem, Nick. I told him you were just about to
- 5:36go away, but he's very anxious to talk to you about one of your
- 5:40pet hates. Gambling. Oh that's all. I'll just what's your difficulty,
- 5:44mister Rieddon a gambling ship. I've lost a great deal of money on it,
- 5:47but why come to me about that. I'm convinced that the roulette feel
- 5:51on this ship is crooked. If I can prove it, Betty Is,
- 5:55if I can get you to prove it, I may be able to get
- 5:58back some of my losses. Sorry, I can't help you, mister Ridden,
- 6:01but I'm off on a fishing trip. Mister Ridden, if you're convinced
- 6:03that this gambling ship is crooked, why don't you go to the police.
- 6:06In the first place, I can't afford the publicity, And in the second
- 6:11place, the police would merely raid the ship and shut it down, and
- 6:13I'd have no chance to get back by losses. Mister Carter, Yes,
- 6:18I've heard about your big hobby, you're downtown Boys Club. Well, if
- 6:24you look into this matter for me, I'm prepared to make a very substantial
- 6:28donation to you boys club. Oh, Nick, that would be wonderful.
- 6:32Yeah. Where is this gambling ship anchored off the coasts, reached by launch
- 6:39from the town of Thompson's Cool Thompson's Coal. Why, that's only a few
- 6:43miles from Sandy Point, where I'm going for my week of fishing. I'll
- 6:46do, mister Ridden. I'll take a look at this gambling ship. If
- 6:48I find anything, I'll take a case. I can't ask for any more
- 6:51than that. But just why do you think this gambling ship isn't on the
- 6:55level, mister Carter. I'm convinced the roulette wheel is fixed, is I
- 7:00don't know just how it's done. That kind of evidence isn't very satisfactory in
- 7:02the court room. Well, if we can just find out how it's done,
- 7:05I can confront the gambling syndicate with the facts and get back your money
- 7:11and close up the ship. That's see. Well, mister Ridden, I'll
- 7:14take a run out there and have a look. Suggest you meet me at
- 7:15the hotel of Thompson's Cove in a couple of days. I'll give you my
- 7:18decision. I'll do that, mister Carter. I'm grateful to you. I'll
- 7:23don't be grateful yet. Good day, mister Ridden, Good day, mister
- 7:26Carter. Missus Bowen, good bye, mister Ridden. Ol Patsy, you've
- 7:30got a hurry up and finish those case history. Oh Nick, what do
- 7:32I I'll need you with me when I go up to that gambling ship tomorrow
- 7:35night. Well why didn't you say so that's different? Do you mean we
- 7:49don't have to pay to ride on, miss Launch. No, the gambling
- 7:54ship provides free transportation to its guests. Oh hey, there are some prosperous
- 7:59looking people on board. I have to be to play roulette, Nick,
- 8:03she got young girl over by the rail. She can't be over eighteen,
- 8:07pretty too. I wonder why she's going out to the ship. She seems
- 8:11to be alone and oh, Pats, Yeah, I think that'd be a
- 8:13good idea if you try to find her out. She's not the gambling type
- 8:18at all, right, Nick, I'll strike up a conversation with her as
- 8:20soon as we get aboard. Nick, I want you to meet miss Edwards.
- 8:35Mister Carter. How do you do, mister Curdi he wanted to meet
- 8:39you, miss Edwards. I noticed you coming out on the launch. Uhh,
- 8:41charlas plattering if you noticed by a pretty girl? Thank you. Ms.
- 8:45Bowen and I were both wondering why a girl like you would be visiting
- 8:48a place like this alone. See that piano over there in the roulette room.
- 8:52Yes, my brother Bill played that piano until last night. Oh did
- 8:56he lose his job? I don't know. You don't know. No.
- 9:01All I know is he didn't come home last night. You see, we
- 9:03lived together in Thompson's Cove. I have a job there and you've come out
- 9:07here to find out what happened to your brother. If I can, mister
- 9:09Carter, I'm terribly worried. Well, possibly I can be of some assistant
- 9:13oor you only could? I think the first step in that direction is the
- 9:18present piano player. I'll go over and have a chat with him. No
- 9:22more. Why'd you stop playing the piano so abruptly? Son? I don't
- 9:41like that number much? How about playing Jun's Best? Not all over here?
- 9:46Oh? I don't like that one either. You're new here, aren't
- 9:50you? Kind of what happened to the former piano player? I want to
- 9:54play it here? Last night? I got no idea, that's all.
- 9:58Any idea? Who can tell me about the other piano player? Day?
- 10:03Why did you mind your own business? Why? I'm just curious to find
- 10:07out? How do you stop right in the middle of the chune? Listen?
- 10:13You can I hit a dambler talk to me. I like to see
- 10:16mister Corta. That's where you never mind? Do you know my name?
- 10:20Sure? So does the boss. Many of fact, the boss wants to
- 10:24see you in his office right away. I'll be delighted to meet the boss.
- 10:28As a matter of fact, I was just about to ask someone for
- 10:31a proper introduction. Okay, follow me, I'll introduce you good and proper.
- 10:50Here's mister Cotta boy. I love Nick Cotter. How do you do?
- 10:56Don't believe I've had the pleasure? Simmons? The name Dutch Simmons.
- 11:00Glad to know you and your friends. Here. My name's Gus Gus Jones.
- 11:05Well, gentlemen, now that we're a quainted quarter, I want to
- 11:09know what you're doing on this ship. Isn't my money as good as any
- 11:11other suckers? I don't like that, Craig Carter, this is an honest
- 11:15ship. I never heard of a gambling ship that was honest. How would
- 11:18you know whether or that way around is till you haven't been gambling. We
- 11:20spotted you the minute you got aboard, and we know you're a private eye
- 11:24giving us the once over. Who are you working for? You should know
- 11:28that it's unethical for me to devolve the name of a client. That's a
- 11:31life of private dick talking about ethics. Some of us are on the level.
- 11:37By the way, who are you? Two girl friends? One is
- 11:39my assistant, Miss Boonene, and the other is a miss ethel Edwards,
- 11:43whose brother played the piano in your roulette room until last night. Oh yeah,
- 11:48Bill Edwards, nice kid? What happened to him? How should I
- 11:52know he didn't go home last night? Strange? A youngster should just vanish.
- 11:58So you're working for the kids? Could be? Well, you're entirely
- 12:01too inquisitive, mister Carter, And if I ever see you on the ship
- 12:03again, maybe you'll vanish too. Tough aren't you tough enough to handle you?
- 12:09Gus? Yeah? Boss, take Carter and his assistant and his new
- 12:13girlfriend to the next launch, okay, and see that they get back to
- 12:16shore. Well that was quite a shit. Yeah, fantastic, isn't it
- 12:35a white people flock to a place like that just to lose their money?
- 12:39My brother Built says, they do a big business, expensive layout. All
- 12:43right, Now we've got to figure out how to get back there. Miss
- 12:48Bowen and I have been barred bard Uh huh? Why is Edwards? I'm
- 12:52a private detective and miss Bowen as my assistant. Oh. I'm investigating something
- 12:56on the ship for a client. But when I heard about your missing I
- 13:00decided i'd look into that too. Thank you, mister CURDI hope you can
- 13:03find out what's happened to him. I will this at all possible, and
- 13:07I think I'll start by having a chat for the pilot of this launch.
- 13:11Oh, we better wait for you back here, Nick, Oh, Betsy,
- 13:13you'll want to be a moment Okay, nice night, skipper. Nice
- 13:20enough. Suppose you sometimes get rough weather sim time? What do you do
- 13:26when it gets really tough? Don't run? But how do the customers get
- 13:30back and forth to the ship? Then? Good? Don't? Oh and
- 13:33I suppose you decided the ship will be open for business each evening. Yeah,
- 13:37that's about it, mister huh. I have to think the owners of
- 13:41the ship would certainly value your services. Not too much. I've been working
- 13:46here for more than a year and got no rease yet. Oh how about
- 13:50the men who work on the ship. The bosses treat them pretty well financially.
- 13:54I mean, I wouldn't know, mister. You know somebody back there
- 13:58on the ship. Just a kid who plays the piano. Here's that Bill
- 14:01Edwards? Nice kids, haven't seen him in a couple of days. You
- 14:05mean he didn't come back with you last night? No he didn't, did
- 14:09he usually? Right? Say? Why are you asking me all these questions?
- 14:13Thanks? Skippers? He again. Yeah, wait a minute, what
- 14:16they can do? Well, Nick, learn anything miss edwards. The pilot
- 14:24tells me your brother didn't return the shore last night unless he swam. But
- 14:28Phill isn't a very good swimmer, and he wouldn't try to swim ashore.
- 14:31It's too far. That's what I'm afraid of, Bessy. He's dead,
- 14:35mister Cutter. I just know that I had a hard young trier, but
- 14:37we don't know what's happened to him. More, mister Curry, you said
- 14:41you'd help me, and I will. I'm going through with thisation now,
- 14:45no matter what happens. So a casual look into a possible gambling swindle on
- 14:56Nick's part suddenly turns into a investigation. Or is it murder? We'll see
- 15:03in just a moment. Now back to the case of the missing piano player.
- 15:13Today is Nick Carter Adventure, brought to you by All Dutch Cleanser.
- 15:18It is the following morning. Nick is in John Ridon's hotel room at Thompson's
- 15:20Colt, where Rian has come to hear Nick's first report. Mister Riden,
- 15:26that gambling ship is run by a group of dangerous men. I thought so
- 15:30they warned me not to return to the ship or I'd vanish. Why,
- 15:35because I think I may be on the track of a murder. Murder,
- 15:37that's right. A young piano player named Bill Edwards. I remember him?
- 15:43Why? Why? I like his music? This kid was playing the piano
- 15:48in the roulette room until the night before last, then he vanished. How
- 15:52do you know? Chris Bone? And I met his sister on the launch
- 15:56going out for the ship, and from much she told us mister ridden young
- 16:00I led Ridge is a prisoner on that ship or dead? Have you notified
- 16:03the police? No, because I'm not sure of anything yet. Well,
- 16:07in the meantime, how about that roulette field? Is it crooked? Is
- 16:11it fixed? Shouldn't be it? All surprised after my conversation with mister dutz
- 16:15Zimmon and his pal Gusts. I also think it may have something to do
- 16:19with the piano. Piano eh, yes, all right. Now my main
- 16:25problem is getting back to the ship, and how do you intend to do
- 16:27that. I've decided to take your case, good, very good, But
- 16:32I'm afraid it's going to cost you some extra money for a bride. How
- 16:34much? Possibly five hundred, possibly one thousand and that's nothing compared to what
- 16:38I've lost out there. Agreed, Thanks for the photo. Confidence your call
- 16:45piece Thompson's code seven three eight six extension eight seven three eight six extension eight.
- 16:52Right, what are you doing calling the ship? Phone number was on
- 16:55the guest card I got in this hotel. The extension I recalled from Ducks
- 16:57or mister dutz zimmon his phone in his office. Hello, Hello, here's
- 17:03Gus's there is Gus. Who's this? This is Nick Carter? Nick Cutty?
- 17:08What Gus? How'd you like to pick up an extra five hundred for
- 17:12what? I thought that? For five hundred dollars, you'd see that I
- 17:15got back on that ship. That's a tough thing to arrange. Cutter boys
- 17:22don't like you. I can't guarantee what had happened? Alright, how about
- 17:26a thousand? Okay, it's a deal, but I won't promise what will
- 17:30happen after you get aboard. I'll worry about that. Just meet me in
- 17:34Karrn's Bar and grill and Thompson's cove this afternoon at four, have another drink.
- 17:49Gus might as well, so MANI you ain't touched yours. I will
- 17:56later waiter yeah, another of the same. Yeah, come up, This
- 18:03booze should tastes funny, that's your imagination. Guess what do you know about
- 18:10Bill Edwards? Nice kid, good piano player too. It's too bad.
- 18:18What happened to him? He disappeared? Where didn't he somewhere on the ship?
- 18:29Well, guys, drink hearty? Yeah? Sure, Hey, what
- 18:36happened to Bill Edwards? Guess Bill Edwards? Yes? Where is he?
- 18:42He s dead? Where got funny tasting and booze in this joint? How
- 18:51did Bill Edwards die? Guess where's his body? There was a oh anchor
- 18:57and wow, the ship been there for years? I ain't there now.
- 19:06We had to use it. Yeah, we used it. So thanks,
- 19:15Thank you guys, you've helped a lot. Homicide Sergeant Matheson, Hello,
- 19:33Maddy, Nick, Nick, all right, Thompson's Co Hotel, Maddick and
- 19:37you come out here right away. What's up? Thought you were on a
- 19:40vacation been interrupted by a murder and I need a little police cooperation and past
- 19:44can do? Nick? So happens? I know the police officers out there
- 19:47very well. Fine, can you come right out? Sure things are quiet
- 19:49here in town. Thanks Maddy, and be sure to wear your old clothes.
- 19:53I've arranged a fishing expedition for you. Big crowd here tonight, Nick.
- 20:08Yes, it's amazing the way people like to get rid of money.
- 20:12Good evening text here again, This is miss Bourne. Hi, Hi,
- 20:21I enjoy your playing very much, right, Miss Boone, and I were
- 20:23wondering why you don't use the entire keyboard. I don't get you. I've
- 20:29never seen the player in the extreme bass or the extreme trouble for such a
- 20:32fine instrument. It's a shame not to use the whole keyboard. Whyn't you
- 20:37two go away and play games. I told you to stay off this ship,
- 20:47Cattter, Oh, hello Dutch. Oh, this is my assistant,
- 20:52Miss Boone. How do you do? Got of this thing? You feel
- 20:53in the middle of your back is a gun? But what I thought?
- 20:56Start walking to my office? Mind? If I come along, you stay
- 21:02here. I'm gonna have a little talk with your boyfriend alone. Yes,
- 21:06you're not wanted, Betsy. I see you later, all right, Nick,
- 21:10I'll be waiting for you. You were a fool to come back,
- 21:17Carter. I warned you. I remember that you just said if I ever
- 21:22came back here, I'd vanish like Bill Edwards. That's what you're going to
- 21:26do. Yeah, yeah, open that door. Ah, come in,
- 21:32mister Carter, mister Redon, Yes, close the door to sure, Ridden,
- 21:37and no sudden moves either of you. I've got you both covered.
- 21:42I wouldn't want any trouble. Well, that is certainly an unexpected turn of
- 21:53events. We'll see what happens next in just a moment. And now for
- 22:03the conclusion of the case of the missing piano player. Today's adventure with Nick
- 22:06Carter brought to you by Old Dutch Cleanser. We pick up our story where
- 22:11we left off, as Riardon says to Dutch and Nick. Now sudden molds
- 22:14either of you. I've got you both covered. I wouldn't want any trouble.
- 22:18What's the idea, Ridden? Why the gun looks like he's gone screw?
- 22:21He shut up, Gus, I'll do the talking, Ridden. What
- 22:23are you doing here? This is my office, Carter, our office.
- 22:27So you boys are partners in this ragon nice deduction. Carter. I wondered,
- 22:32how long did it take for you to come out in the open?
- 22:33Ridden? But why the gun? Gus and Dutch are going to do some
- 22:37explaining. So you hired Carter correct. I hired him to check up on
- 22:41YouTube. Are you now, Perhaps you'll tell me why you've brought Carter in
- 22:45here at the point of a gun. He's too nosy and ask him too
- 22:48many questions. He knows too much. That's right, he knows too much
- 22:51about a crooked roulette for you. You mean to say that this smile,
- 22:52Alex is not telling you listen to what Carter has to say. Dutch,
- 22:56speak up, Carter, gladly, mister ridden at first, inasmuch as you
- 23:00seem to know DUTs so well, will you be good enough to tell him
- 23:03to take that automatic out of my spine. You heard him, Dutch drop
- 23:07the gun on the floor. You'll be sorry for this riding. Thanks well,
- 23:11Carter. How about that roulette wheel. It's fixed. It's a lot
- 23:15room, both of you, all right, Carter, prove it. You'll
- 23:19take that piano apart. You find the answer our wires under the rug from
- 23:23the piano to the roulett wheel. As the wheel starts spinning, the piano
- 23:26starts playing at a signal from the croupier. The piano player, who faces
- 23:30the croupier, stops playing abruptly. You're crazy, Carter, Go ahead,
- 23:34card I noticed that the fear and Thiss never touches the extreme treble or bass
- 23:37keys, except when he stops playing. Then he does press a certain key
- 23:41at one end or the other. A key in the bass for black,
- 23:45a key in the treble for red. It's as simple as that, Ridden,
- 23:48So much for the mechanics. What else this fact should also be of
- 23:52interest to you. Some of the customers are very pally with the croupier,
- 23:53and they're always the same cut. And these customers walk away from that table
- 23:57with some handsome winnings, winning in which you do not share, Ridden,
- 24:02but in which Dutch and Gusts do real Are you going to believe this,
- 24:04Bump Carter or Rus? I'm going to believe Carter. Carter doesn't lie alright,
- 24:07Ridden, what are you gonna do about it? There's Dutch. I'm
- 24:10going to dissolve our partnership here, and no DUTs. He's gonna say,
- 24:15what care you of knocking me over? Carter? You don't want to be
- 24:17a killer too? Ridden? He oh, hi, Maddie, it's good
- 24:22to see you, right, Nick, right his rain? What's the scorn?
- 24:25Nick? My client here decided to become a killer, So I tackled
- 24:27him and the shots went. Why what's this all about, Carter? Why
- 24:30are the cops? That's about a murder? Maddy? Yeah, and you
- 24:33and the local police find that anchor we did, Nick, under the bow
- 24:37of this ship. Well, young Bill Edwards's body tied to it. There
- 24:40are your killers, Maddie, DU's zimm And and Gus Jones. Nice going,
- 24:42Nick, take him away, boys, you can't take me. This
- 24:45guy's crazy. The bulletsh you guys pumped into young Bill Edwards before you dropped
- 24:49him over the side. Don't finish putting you in the hot seat. I'll
- 24:53turn him a badge. Let's go. Huh. Well, Nick, another
- 25:06case history to type. Just as I had everything in the office cleaned up
- 25:08and ready for filing, I'll give you something to do while I catch some
- 25:11fish. You. Oh you know, Nick, you haven't told me how
- 25:15you knew where to find Build Edward's body. I need the facts for the
- 25:18file. Scopolamine, Petsy, huh scopolamine it's a truth serum, the kind
- 25:22of stuff the Germans used to get information out of their prisoners during the war.
- 25:26I don't follow you. You recall I had a date with guests in
- 25:30a bar. Yeah, Well, Scapolamine is a drug that makes a man
- 25:33unable to avoid telling the truth. I've put some of the drinks I bought
- 25:37for him. Oh, then I asked him about Young Edwards. The minute
- 25:41he mentioned the anchor, I knew the answer. I called the local police.
- 25:45When they dragged the bottom under the bow of that ship. They found
- 25:48what they were after, unfortunately, and you found more than you bargained for.
- 25:52Yes, very true, Patsy. I realized that Riordan had a little
- 25:56private drudge to settle as soon as he recognized the name of Bill Edwards.
- 26:00H but murder. Wow, that's something more than we've bargained for. Well,
- 26:07now that that's settled, I suppose you're going back to Sandy Point,
- 26:11right, Patsy. Back to Sandy Point and some fishing, and this time
- 26:14I hope to catch nothing but fish. Well, Nick, can you give
- 26:25us a hint or two on the adventure that old edge cleaner is going to
- 26:26bring us next week? Certainly? Can Bob. It started out with a
- 26:30dish of macaroni in a one armed lunch room, a dish which contained more
- 26:33than macaroni, I might add, and which led us into strange and devious
- 26:37paths first we landed in an unused heating furnace, then a trash can on
- 26:41the corner. Wait a minute to what we're looking for? A small metal
- 26:45capsule that was worth a fortune and then turned into a miniature bomb at the
- 26:48end. It certainly sounds unusual. What do you call the story, Nick?
- 26:52I call it the Case of the Wandering Macaroni. Nick carter Master Detective
- 27:02is presented each week at this time and over these same stations by the Cutty
- 27:06Heat Packing Company, makers of all Dutch cleanser. Nick Carter Master Detective,
- 27:22produced and directed by Jock McGregor, is copyrighted by Street and Smith Publications Incorporated.
- 27:27Lon Clark is starred as Nick, with Charlotte Manson featured as Patsy.
- 27:32Matty is played by Ed Latimer. Today's script was written by Bryce disc Junior.
- 27:37Original music is played by George Wright. This program is fictional and any
- 27:42resemblance to actual persons living or dead is purely coincidental. This is Bob Martin
- 27:48saying, when minutes count, use old Dutch cleanser. This is the mutual
- 28:03broadcasting system. Welcome back. To be honest, the plot has a problem.
- 28:33It's one of those things where mystery writers get clever when coming up with
- 28:38crimes, and their crime ideas are clever, but they're not too practical.
- 28:44This whole thing with the piano and being restricted from playing it normally even when
- 28:52you're not doing things to actively fix the wheel, it's problematic because people are
- 28:59going to want to hear songs, and anytime you have an element in a
- 29:03casino, it's basically to keep the guests happy and continuing to gamble. And
- 29:11certainly I can't help but thinking somebody other than Nick probably would have figured this
- 29:17out one day or another. But at any rate, Nick did do it
- 29:23all right. Well, I do want to send us special thanks out from
