- 2:30gonna let Noah take over right now because apparently I can't
- 2:33speak tonight. I'm yeah, we're wresting control
- 2:38from you this week. I picked 1974's Black Christmas.
- 2:44I got a bit of there's a bit of story here.
- 2:46This is this one was unknown to me, but Alex mentioned it's like
- 2:53a staple for you and Nick. You had already seen this a few
- 2:57times. Oh yeah, this is definitely a
- 2:59staple movie. So some of this information will
- 3:04kind of talk about a little bit of the movie.
- 3:07Spoiler warning, you should go watch this.
- 3:10It's absolutely worth your time. But we can get into it here.
- 3:15So Black Christmas is a Canadian slasher film produced and
- 3:18directed by Bob Clark, written by Roy Moore.
- 3:22Bob Clark is a American director, however, he was
- 3:29approached by the Canadian Film Development Corporation to
- 3:33produce this movie in Canada. The movie's inspired by an urban
- 3:38legend of young babysitters being brutally assaulted and
- 3:41murdered in the Midwest in the early 60s, and the rumor is
- 3:45based on some real crimes, including one of a 13 year old
- 3:50girl who was sexually assaulted by an unknown suspect.
- 3:53Another incident involved a babysitter who was unnerved by a
- 3:58life-size statue of a clown that she found in the home of the
- 4:02family she was hired by. When she called the parents to
- 4:05ask if she could cover the statue with the blanket, the
- 4:07parent informed her that they owned no such statue and it
- 4:11turned out to be a murderer with dwarfism dressed in a clown
- 4:14costume. What?
- 4:17Make that. Fucking movie.
- 4:19Now that it's, it's sort of unclear which of these versions
- 4:23of the story is true. However, there's some more
- 4:25versions, like one in which the babysitter rescues kids from the
- 4:29attacker, and then the attacker is caught by the police, the
- 4:33babysitter managing to fight off and even kill the intruder,
- 4:36saving the kids. One where the babysitter is
- 4:39killed but the kids survive. Another one where the kids turn
- 4:43out to be pulling a prank on the babysitter and are told off by
- 4:47the police when the plan falls apart, which is a little bit
- 4:50like the one we watched last week.
- 4:52Better watch out where it turned turned out to be the kids who
- 4:57were in control. There's another option where the
- 5:01police inform a family member after the fact that they found a
- 5:05killer hiding under the kids bed holding a weapon.
- 5:10This movie's cast is pretty stacked.
- 5:12We got Olivia Hussey pussy. However you say that, who you
- 5:18will recognize from 1968's Romeo and Juliet, Death on the Nile.
- 5:22And she had a small role in the Star Wars The Old Republic.
- 5:26Margot Kidder. Yeah, Margot Kidder, who is
- 5:29famous for her roles as Lois Lane in 1978's Superman along
- 5:34with its 1980 sequel, The Amityville Horror, Smallville
- 5:38and Halloween 2. Oh yeah, Keir Dulay.
- 5:43I don't really know how you say that guy's name, but you'd know
- 5:46him from Fahrenheit 451, that Halo TV show from 2022 that
- 5:51nobody liked, and the legendary astronaut turned intergalactic
- 5:55star child David Bowman from Space Odyssey.
- 5:59Yeah, buddy, we love. So there's also John Saxon from
- 6:04Enter the Dragon and Nightmare on Elm Street and Andrea Martin
- 6:08who if you were a kid who watched cartoons in the early
- 6:112000s, you will definitely recognize her voice because she
- 6:15was Miss Foul. She also on a Jimmy Neutron.
- 6:19She lent her voice to a number of different shows including Kim
- 6:24Possible, American Dad, Recessed Cat Dog, The Simpsons, and
- 6:28Sesame Street. Love that.
- 6:29She also had some smaller roles in TV shows like 30 Rock, Nurse
- 6:34Nurse Jackie and Modern Family. So big cast.
- 6:40Big cast here. The budget for the movie is
- 6:45about $686,000 as filmed in Toronto in 1973 and 74.
- 6:52The screenplay was written under the title Stop Me and was
- 6:57adjusted multiple times changing locations and plot points and
- 7:02like I said, the title changed. Eventually, it was completed and
- 7:06distributed as Silent Night, Evil Night in the US by Warner
- 7:10Brothers in 1975. And then the film's name was
- 7:14later renamed to Black Christmas.
- 7:17And it's estimated that the movie made about $4 million,
- 7:20making it some some somewhat of a success.
- 7:25So with its cast, yeah, not, not bad.
- 7:28The cast of young stars. The movie filmed for about two
- 7:31months in Toronto. The Canadian Film Development
- 7:35Corporation gave the team $200,000 to start out.
- 7:39So that's where a fair chunk of the budget came from.
- 7:42And that's a very common thing a lot of people don't know, but in
- 7:46Canada they there was something of a mandate that Canadian made
- 7:51productions be pushed harder than foreign made production.
- 7:56So on like radio stations, they had like a quota that you had to
- 8:02play a certain amount of Canadian music, which is why all
- 8:06Canadians love Rush. So they gave, so they gave them
- 8:12a bit of money to start out. The house that the movie
- 8:15primarily takes place in is a large house around the corner
- 8:19from the popular Casa Loma in Toronto, which if you don't know
- 8:23what that is, it's essentially a normal Toronto like suburb
- 8:27neighborhood. And then there's just a castle
- 8:29there. And it's like a full on castle
- 8:32with like towers and tall walls and a big courtyard and a spooky
- 8:39dungeon pool in the basement. You can, you can just go and you
- 8:43can just go and visit it. And if you go around the corner,
- 8:45you can you can see the black Christmas house.
- 8:48That's fucking awesome. Where where is this located in
- 8:52relation to Detroit? How far from Detroit is this?
- 8:55Toronto, it's four hours. OK, what we might, I can go back
- 8:59to Canada. So you know if if the IT came
- 9:03from screen box tour, the location tour can go
- 9:10international, we can put that on our list.
- 9:12I got an enhanced license. And I, I, I've been to Casa
- 9:17Loma. I know where this is.
- 9:18It is not it's it's, yeah, it's some somewhat close to where my
- 9:23grandparents live. That's awesome.
- 9:25So they have visited. We probably drove past the
- 9:28house. You know, it's, it's on like a
- 9:31main road there. There's not really much to
- 9:37report about making the movie. The cast seem to have a good
- 9:40time. The POV shots that are all over
- 9:44the movie. We're done with a specially
- 9:46designed head mounted camera rig so that the wearer would be able
- 9:50to climb up a ladder or as we see like entering the window of
- 9:55the house without having to do any extra camera tricks.
- 10:01Could you imagine having like that?
- 10:03Yeah. You could have like a George
- 10:05corpse grinder neck on that man. Exactly because those cameras,
- 10:10like I don't know how small you would have, were able to make
- 10:12those things back in the day. And the smallest camera like
- 10:17would have been like a super 8 or something.
- 10:20I'm not really sure what camera they use, but it could have been
- 10:22really heavy. It probably was really heavy,
- 10:26yeah. Yeah, the score is provided by
- 10:31Carl Zitter Zitterer, who used experimental ideas like tying
- 10:37forks and other objects to the strings of the piano to distort
- 10:42its sound. He also played some of the
- 10:44sounds through an old phone and recorded that to create the
- 10:49disturbing soundscape for the film.
- 10:52In the weeks before the release, there was a hotline setup that
- 10:56you could call and you would hear the sinister voice that we
- 11:00hear throughout the movie on the other end of the phone.
- 11:03That's cool as fuck. The hotline was set up by the
- 11:06studio, but it crippled the studio's phone network and
- 11:09received over 10,000 callers within the 1st 24 hours.
- 11:13The The New York Telephone Company requested that the
- 11:17promotional event be ended early.
- 11:19Warner Brothers did as they asked, and they also cancelled
- 11:22another promotional event where two women would walk the streets
- 11:26of Manhattan in Santa suits, hanging handing out cards with
- 11:30the same phone number on it. How cool would that have been?
- 11:34It's like when we were in San Diego and that.
- 11:38I don't know what movie that was, but they were just putting
- 11:41shit in people's pockets and shit like that.
- 11:43I think that was. I think that was for a game.
- 11:46Whatever it was, that was sweet as fuck.
- 11:48But it's that like guerrilla marketing stuff?
- 11:50I love it. Exactly.
- 11:53So there was a bit of a bit of a kerfuffle when they went to
- 12:02release this movie for TV. The killer in the movie is
- 12:08clearly based on some real world serial killers.
- 12:12Two weeks before the the premiere of the TV version of
- 12:16the film, which was then known as Stranger in the House, the
- 12:20governor of Florida, Ruben Eskew called NBCTV to ask them to
- 12:24delay the release for the southern states.
- 12:27On January 28th of 1978, a gruesome double murder occurred
- 12:32at the Florida State University campus in Tallahassee where a
- 12:36man murdered 2 Chi Omega sisters while they were sleeping in
- 12:39their beds. He then went next door to
- 12:42another sorority house and attacked 2 more students who
- 12:45survived and were able to identify their attacker as none
- 12:48other than Ted Bundy. Not good.
- 12:52So during the movie, Alex, you mentioned that the killer was
- 12:55based on seemed to be based somewhat on Ted Bundy.
- 12:58I said that as well. Yeah.
- 13:01Oh, then Nick. Nick said that, so you know Ted.
- 13:05Bundy gets his. Way into the story here.
- 13:09Fun fact. Ted Bundy, of course.
- 13:11Oh yeah. She was a nurse around the time
- 13:16that Ted Bundy was doing the slayings.
- 13:19Oh, yeah, her friend. Her friend was killed by Ted
- 13:22Bundy. Oh my God.
- 13:24Yes, that's my aunt Camille. Her her friend was killed by
- 13:30him, Yes. Wow.
- 13:32Well, he eventually, it's a very crispy story, but he was
- 13:38eventually executed as we know for this and many other.
- 13:42Burns, Bundy. Burn.
- 13:44That's right, NBCTV offered an alternative to the movie for the
- 13:49southern partners, realizing that the issue might hit a
- 13:52little too close to home for the students and residents of
- 13:55Tallahassee. Reviews overall were mixed.
- 13:59In Canada, the reception was a little bit worse than it was in
- 14:03the States. Critics thought the movie was
- 14:05cliched and childish, and the script did not contain much
- 14:09substance. This.
- 14:10Is the I roll from Alex 31? Yeah, maybe it was just at the
- 14:15time that they felt that, but when you watch it now, it it.
- 14:19And as time went on the like, the later reviews are much
- 14:22kinder, calling the movie innovative and praising the
- 14:26actors who by that point had really established himself as
- 14:31big names. Margot Kidder won Best
- 14:35Performance by a Lead Actress at the Canadian Film Awards in 1975
- 14:41for this role, and it also won Best Sound Editing at the same
- 14:44award show. It's released on VHS in the 80s
- 14:50and then DVD as long as a few theatrical releases for
- 14:54anniversaries and has since developed a small cult
- 14:58following. But it wasn't enough to keep it
- 15:03coming back to theaters, so that eventually got all got canned.
- 15:06But today it remains A cult classic of the holiday horror
- 15:11movie genre, finding itself very comfortably on a lot of the best
- 15:16horror movies of all time from publications like Indie Wire and
- 15:20Bravo. A lot of people praised the
- 15:22movie for having a bit of a feminist slant, showing off its
- 15:27feminist or it's it's female protagonists and tackling some
- 15:32Women's Health issues. Yeah.
- 15:35So that's the business. You guys have seen it before.
- 15:39What do you guys? Think who wants to go first
- 15:42here, Alex? Go for it, Nick.
- 15:45I've always liked Black Christmas, there's always a
- 15:49super creepy movie to me. I haven't seen it in a long
- 15:51time, but I used to watch it all the time, like Every Around
- 15:55Christmas and especially when I had roommates like me and the
- 15:58guys were just put on this. This movie especially and the
- 16:05sound design in this movie is what always fucked me up.
- 16:07That and the killer because you never really get a clear shot of
- 16:11the killer. It's a lot of implications with
- 16:14it. Those calls always fucked with
- 16:16me. I hated when those.
- 16:20I loved how the calls were done. I hated when they'd come through
- 16:25because I hated that garbled mixture of different voices,
- 16:29mixture of noises. You don't know what's going on,
- 16:31but then you kind of have a clear shot of what's going on
- 16:34and it's just so fucked and terrifying.
- 16:37I hated it. I still, I hated it.
- 16:40Watching it tonight, I was like, I fucking remember why I hate
- 16:44this, but in a good way. In, in a good way.
- 16:46I don't like it, but I love black Christmas.
- 16:50I thought I've always thought this movie was really good.
- 16:52I think the pacing is just great for this film.
- 16:55The actors are crushing it every second they're on screen.
- 17:01I I I love this movie and I just hope it remains this forever
- 17:06right, just in its own bubble doing its own thing, getting new
- 17:12viewers to see it. You know, being on screen box is
- 17:15great for this movie. So yeah, I love I love Black
- 17:18Christmas. Love it.
- 17:22Yeah, it's a. Fucking solid horror flick even
- 17:27year round, but it is a Christmas staple every year I
- 17:31tend to watch it. There's there was some other
- 17:35random shit I'm trying to remember it.
- 17:38I'm not going to be able to remember fuck was it but.
- 17:42You can do it bub. No, dude, it's it's.
- 17:48Gone. He got some.
- 17:49He's got his own fun facts. No, I'm trying to fucking
- 17:54remember, God dammit. Was it nonetheless before the
- 17:57dab that maybe you forgot, or after the dab?
- 17:59No because I was trying to think about it during the movie too.
- 18:02OK because Noah brought some stuff up very early on and but
- 18:09no solid movie. Like Nick said, the actors crush
- 18:12it in this fucking movie. They absolutely do.
- 18:18And pretty violent, yeah. Yeah, it's.
- 18:22Pretty fucking violent. There's like 4, how many kills
- 18:26are there in it? Like there's 44.
- 18:29Yeah, so like 4 kill. What about the girl?
- 18:364 Hark 5. Well, we don't.
- 18:38We don't. See that?
- 18:40But we don't see that but. Also did he do it?
- 18:43I see. I don't know.
- 18:45I think he's. Been in the house the entire
- 18:47night though. Well, there's also the cut.
- 18:49The cop gets killed, but we don't see that.
- 18:52So I think it is the same killer doing all of it.
- 18:55Yeah. But this movie does like a
- 18:57really good job of like the setup it it's leading you down
- 19:02one path and then there's like A twist.
- 19:07But it's one of those things where even at the end it's it's
- 19:13kind of unclear who the killer is because the whole time the
- 19:18movie setting up that you're supposed to think it's Peter,
- 19:20that he's the killer, which like there's some things that
- 19:27happened, like the the person on the other end of the phone says
- 19:30something that Peter said I'd that it wouldn't make sense for
- 19:35another person to have been there to hear that.
- 19:39Yeah, 'cause it was such a private thing.
- 19:41Yeah, yeah. And it's like, OK, so who is?
- 19:44It has to be Peter. Like I'm in.
- 19:47Your walls. I'm in your walls.
- 19:48I'm in your walls. Dude, I, I, I love it.
- 19:51Dude, I you know what I love with the phone calls?
- 19:54Yep. I think, I think because before
- 19:58any killings happen, he calls and is like he's just like
- 20:04talking. He's like saying stuff.
- 20:06But as soon as the first kill happens, the next time he calls,
- 20:10you hear like the suffocating and the choking sound.
- 20:13Yeah, so. It's almost like he records his
- 20:17murders and then plays it back over the phone.
- 20:20And then is talking while he's doing the other.
- 20:23Mm hmm. That's where all those.
- 20:27Because after they find the little girl in the park, you
- 20:30hear like the kid. You hear like a young voice
- 20:34being. Oh fuck yeah, you're right.
- 20:36Yeah, you do. The only one that doesn't happen
- 20:39for is the cop because it's it's not really clear when.
- 20:43The the the teacher too right, The school teacher too right?
- 20:46Or the the the the the house. Mom.
- 20:49The yeah yeah, the house mom. So it's 5 kills then?
- 20:54Yeah, my favorite, honestly my favorite is the first one, just
- 20:59the like the setup for where you're like whenever it cuts to
- 21:03like a handheld POV shot, the insinuation is that is the
- 21:08killer. But what they do right at the
- 21:10beginning is they make it kind of unclear if he's really there
- 21:13or not. And then the movie just very
- 21:16quickly tells you like, no, he's here, he's in the house.
- 21:19Yeah, he's he's right there. What do you mean you guys didn't
- 21:22see him there? There's a lot of shadow play in
- 21:24this as well that I liked a lot. And I think my favorite kill is
- 21:29between the first kill and then the horse knife kill.
- 21:34Oh, the the Unicorn. Statue.
- 21:35Yeah. Unicorn statue.
- 21:36Yeah, yeah, yeah. I love that kill as well 'cause
- 21:39you don't really. And that's.
- 21:40Yeah. That one has like a misleading
- 21:43thing in it too, where like you hear the sound of somebody like
- 21:46choking or like gasping for breath and they go up and she's
- 21:51having an asthma attack. Yes.
- 21:54And then like it happens again, but this time she's being
- 21:56killed. Of course the other the other
- 21:59woman is out listening to the Christmas carolers, but.
- 22:02Yeah, fucking Christmas carolers, dude.
- 22:06Yeah, dude. I I love this film.
- 22:10I think this is a great fix. The the first kill and like got
- 22:15to give old girl credit for like just sitting in the chair with
- 22:20that bag overhead breathing in to where it's like stuck in her
- 22:23fucking mouth while I just like shoot her recording like fuck.
- 22:29So that that actually there was something from the set that the
- 22:33actor said that she she enjoyed doing that scene.
- 22:38She was able to hold her breath for a long time and stay still
- 22:41for a long time because she was a she was a gifted swimmer.
- 22:46So she was used to holding her breath.
- 22:49That was something she said in an interview.
- 22:51And it was it was one of the only things where like people
- 22:53were like talking about it other than saying like the normal
- 22:56stuff, like, oh, we had a good time.
- 22:57But she made it clear that she found it easy to do those scenes
- 23:03where she had to sit in the chair and pretend to be dead.
- 23:07I enjoy it. The whole time.
- 23:10Just. Breathing in I.
- 23:12Enjoy the implication that she's always been in that window as
- 23:15well. Oh, she has been.
- 23:17It's not an implication. She's been in that window.
- 23:19Yeah. Just like rocking back and
- 23:21forth, just all fucked up and like you could.
- 23:24See it if anyone like walked by and just slightly paid any
- 23:28attention you could see it. Does the whole movie like take
- 23:32place over one night? Yes, yes.
- 23:35OK, so I mean it is possible that nobody would have seen it
- 23:40if all the lights were off. There weren't really straight
- 23:43lights. It's possible you wouldn't see
- 23:45it, but there's Party too. The the movie is supposed to be
- 23:49set in Montreal, so the Montreal police were not doing a very
- 23:54good job. Otherwise, I feel like any
- 23:57police officers would have turned that house upside down.
- 24:02First, yeah, that that bitch would have been brought to the
- 24:05ground. Yeah.
- 24:07I mean, look at the one murders that just happened, Brian
- 24:13Koeberger. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 24:19Sorry, that's that's kind of related a little bit.
- 24:22Yeah, he he's no good. No, no, good college girls.
- 24:28Yeah, no good. Yeah.
- 24:29But I mean, it is, it is similar.
- 24:31And it was like a thing after the movie came out.
- 24:34It was, it was kind of 'cause that was like a problem.
- 24:37Like, violence on college campuses has always been a
- 24:41problem. Clearly.
- 24:42Yeah. And then of like, of course,
- 24:46this had to happen in the late 70s.
- 24:49And Ted Bundy was doing his thing.
- 24:50And that was, like, his whole MO.
- 24:53Yeah. And like him being out there,
- 24:55that really had like an effect on the whole country because he
- 25:01seemed to move around a lot and very quickly.
- 25:06He was everywhere. I thought that.
- 25:09Well, a lot like. Fucking everywhere.
- 25:11I think it it's, it's kind of a crazy coincidence how similar
- 25:18that is. Like, I don't know when the Ted
- 25:20Bundy, like when people kind of knew about him.
- 25:23I don't know when that started. I'm unsure I but I want.
- 25:30Most of it most of the movie is based around like the killer in
- 25:35the house type thing. Yeah, home intruder.
- 25:40It just so happened that it happened to be reflecting things
- 25:44that were going on in the real world.
- 25:46But. I've I really liked it.
- 25:48I think it's definitely going to find its place as a holiday
- 25:53staple. This really something to watch
- 25:55it. Like I said, it's not very not
- 25:58very like holiday, but it just takes place I think like a
- 26:03couple days before Christmas. So Oh yeah, that's why they give
- 26:07it that holiday sending. But I going to give it a four
- 26:10out of five. Oh, very good, Mr. Alex, I'm.
- 26:16Going to give it a 5 out of five.
- 26:18Very good classic. It's a, it's a classic.
- 26:20It's a strong movie. It you know what you're getting
- 26:23into when you're watching it. It's fun, good movie.
- 26:27Hell yeah. I will also give it a 5 out of
- 26:32five. This is a classic.
- 26:33It's a staple in the holiday horror community and holiday
- 26:38horror movies itself. This is a must watch.
