- 0:04Right hour number two, welcome back Miller and Condon.
- 0:06Iowa Sports Radio Network Trent Condon, Ken Miller take you to
- 0:10the top of the hour. At that time, we will vacate the
- 0:13premises and make wait for off the bench comes Sean Robertson,
- 0:18Lucas Strain, John Bowencamp coming up bottom of the hour on
- 0:21the Hawkeye basketball media availability earlier this
- 0:25morning. But let's head to the All Star
- 0:26City, to Atlanta All Star game tonight.
- 0:28National League, American League and Matt Post Matt Postons, he
- 0:32was our last get Matt Snyder from
- 0:34cbssports.joins.uscoversbaseballrightsforward@cbssports.com. Matt Trenton, Ken, thank you for
- 0:41coming on. How are you?
- 0:43I'm great. I'm just looking at my hotel
- 0:46room window at Truest Parker. So.
- 0:49Pretty pleased. Does it feel like a big event?
- 0:52Yeah. Yeah, it does.
- 0:53Like there is. The battery the past two days
- 0:57has been insane. It's a really, really nice area
- 0:59around the ballpark. I kind of feel like Wrigleyville
- 1:03was one of the first places that really built the area around the
- 1:06ballpark and a lot of the new places now like Cincinnati
- 1:09really built up around it in San Francisco was pretty good.
- 1:14Atlanta here are the Battery. It's great.
- 1:17So, yeah, I, I it did not feel like a regular season game or
- 1:21anything like that. There were and there's just all
- 1:23kinds of I think one of my favorite things is, is trying to
- 1:26count the jerseys, like how many different teams jerseys I see
- 1:30represented in the fans. That's awesome.
- 1:33I'm sure there's some like some Expo sprinkled in and some of
- 1:36the, you know, come before jerseys no longer there.
- 1:39Baseball fans are baseball fans, right?
- 1:41Love the they show up. So I guess let's let's go to the
- 1:45Mizuroski story first of all, because it dominated last over
- 1:48the weekend when it became apparent that he is going to be
- 1:51a part of it. I have no problem with it.
- 1:52I know that some of the players, in particular the Phillies do.
- 1:55And I can't wait. And I'm so grateful that the
- 1:58Brewers and the Phillies are not done with each other this year.
- 2:01They will get to see these two teams collide, which could make
- 2:04for some outstanding theater. But baseball's been always
- 2:07criticized for not doing enough to promote their fans.
- 2:10Are there are there both their superstars?
- 2:13Here's one. I I don't know.
- 2:16I, I, I know that I'm, I'm not in the majority when it comes to
- 2:19this, but I don't have a problem with it, Matt.
- 2:22I I understand, I think both sides of it, but but here's
- 2:27here's a good point is I talked to Trevor McGill, the Brewers
- 2:31closer, and asked about it and he went, look, there's guys left
- 2:35and right dropping out and say they're not going to pitch and
- 2:38they need somebody whose schedule lined up that would
- 2:40pitch and his schedule lined up and he said, I'm good to go an
- 2:43inning. So what's the problem there?
- 2:44Like so many guys are just saying, I'm not going to pitch,
- 2:47I'm not going to pitch. And they needed somebody who
- 2:49could pitch. And he's like, plus his arms
- 2:52electric as anybody. And if the whole point is you
- 2:55want to put on a good show and you want fans to see who who's
- 3:00the best talent in the league, he's like, he's one of the most
- 3:03talented players. So what?
- 3:05What's the problem here? And I could not possibly agree
- 3:08more. There's some news from today
- 3:10about the potential of Major League Baseball players playing
- 3:14in the 2028 LA Olympics. Now, baseball, yeah, has been
- 3:19obviously something that has not been a big part of Olympic lore.
- 3:23I mean, what do you got to go back to Mark McGwire in 88 kind
- 3:26of the last time? It felt like it had some of
- 3:27those memorable moments and he was a youngster at USC at the
- 3:31time or just coming off of it. Is this a realistic possibility
- 3:35or is this just one of those topics that comes up, a question
- 3:38comes and then you guys all write articles about it?
- 3:40Or do you see this as a real possibility?
- 3:43Man, I, I, I sure hope not. I mean, I just think about if
- 3:47baseball's an everyday sport, right?
- 3:49We need the rhythm we have every day.
- 3:52If you have a gap in the middle of the season, I mean, how long
- 3:54do the WNBA have to take off? It was like a month, wasn't it?
- 3:59I, I just can't see us shutting down the game for an entire
- 4:02month. And, and if you don't, then the
- 4:06players who take part in the Olympics are just going to leave
- 4:08their team. What teams are going to be OK
- 4:10with players that are paying millions of dollars to just take
- 4:13off for a month and go play in the Olympics?
- 4:16I'm just not seeing it. I think the World Baseball
- 4:19Classic is as close as we'll get to an international event where
- 4:23players represent their countries.
- 4:24And even then, USA we're, we're scraping the the bottom of the
- 4:28barrel for pitching because no pitchers wanted to disrupt
- 4:31spring training. I, I just don't see it as being
- 4:36a realistic thing. Just with this being a summer
- 4:38sport, it's just not going to happen.
- 4:41I know that we're going to get some challenges tonight when it
- 4:44comes to a balls and strikes. Are we close to to implementing
- 4:49the robo UMP, if you will, next year when it comes to that, or
- 4:53is there starting to be some push push back amongst the
- 4:56players? I thought, and I don't remember
- 4:58who it was, but if I could, I would give them credit.
- 5:00Made a great point that the young players coming making
- 5:03their way through the miners today will have a big edge when
- 5:06it is that who it was. I thought that was a great point
- 5:09because they're used to this, right?
- 5:11They're used to being and that's A and the veterans maybe you
- 5:15know, separate two behind in the beginning.
- 5:17Are we close to to having robo UPS do you think?
- 5:21Not not full on, but the ABS challenge system where you only
- 5:25have like 2 challenges a game. Absolutely yes.
- 5:27I think it's coming next year. I think they'll have it ready
- 5:30for the full season next year and the playoffs and everything.
- 5:33And I think it's a good thing. I actually, I spoke to Joe Mauer
- 5:37about it, you know, which I thought was he would be a good
- 5:40authority. He was a good framer.
- 5:41He was a catcher. He had a great eye at the plate.
- 5:44And he said that of course, he's Minnesota nice, But he said not
- 5:48only is it good to fix mistakes, but he's like the umpires
- 5:52probably want it too, because the umpires will go back and
- 5:55watch highlights and if they missed a call, they beat
- 5:57themselves up over it. They're human.
- 5:58They don't want to miss calls. So if it's a big spot and they
- 6:01get it wrong, to have the ability to get it fixed, I think
- 6:05it's definitely a good thing. And, and I think where where
- 6:08people who, who don't know the full story, where they get all
- 6:13riled up and they think it's wrong.
- 6:14And I love the human element and everything.
- 6:16Like you're, you're still getting it.
- 6:18You're still going to have framing.
- 6:19This is, we're talking about two, two challenges per game.
- 6:23And hopefully we get AC tonight for the people who didn't watch
- 6:28in spring training how fast it is because as you guys know, in
- 6:31Iowa, you've had it in AAA forever.
- 6:34The challenge, it's not like when they go to video on an out
- 6:38safe play where it might take a minute.
- 6:40Dude, this takes 15 seconds Max, maybe 5 seconds sometimes.
- 6:44It's really, really fast. And if you can have a game
- 6:47changing call fixed, I think that's a great, great thing for
- 6:50baseball. Two parter here and it deals
- 6:53with the sale of a team. The Rays have been our agreed in
- 6:56principle to be sold as Stu Sternberg is finally out of the
- 6:59baseball business. He bought it 20 years ago for
- 7:01200 million. He's going to sell it for 1.7
- 7:03billion. Pretty good return on investment
- 7:06on that one. Does this mean Tampa is in play?
- 7:09Saint Petersburg, maybe somewhere else?
- 7:10He's based in Jacksonville on this ownership group.
- 7:13And secondly, if the Rays go for 1.7, what are my twins going to
- 7:17sell for? Three maybe.
- 7:22Yeah, the twins are much more valuable franchise than than the
- 7:26race. Much more valuable.
- 7:28So yeah, it's gonna get up there in terms of the race.
- 7:31I just hope they get a new ballpark.
- 7:33And I think retractable roof is what they need something like
- 7:37the Rangers and Astros have. Because it's just, we've seen
- 7:42the way the Rays have to stack this year since they're playing
- 7:45outdoors, how they have to stack all their Rd. games in the
- 7:47middle of season and all their home games April, May and
- 7:51September. It's just not cool to have the
- 7:53schedule be like that. And the Trop is just not going
- 7:56to cut it. And we know that that's been an
- 7:58issue for a long, long time. And one of the things Rob
- 8:01Manfred has talked about for years when he's asked about
- 8:03expansion is we have to get the raise and the A's settled in new
- 8:08homes before we think about expanding.
- 8:10And hopefully this new ownership group will be more aggressive
- 8:15and, and getting that ballpark built.
- 8:17And I believe the plans are still Saint Petersburg, but
- 8:20we'll see. It's a new ownership group.
- 8:22Maybe they'll maybe they'll change plans.
- 8:25The Tampa side definitely would be more favorable for
- 8:28attendance. Hopefully something gets done
- 8:31there. I'm optimistic just to get
- 8:33Sternberg out of there. Give me a name or two that might
- 8:36be we might not be thinking about right now that way all of
- 8:40a sudden become available in the next couple of weeks as we get
- 8:44close to the trend deadline. I asked Trent today about Joe
- 8:46Ryan. Obviously he'd be an incredibly
- 8:49coveted commodity and he'd get literally a King's ransom for
- 8:52Joe Ryan. Is there a big name that's it's
- 8:55not being maybe floated about on a consistent basis right now
- 8:59that you're keeping an eye on, Matt?
- 9:03Maybe it's just because I'm just looking at the ballpark right
- 9:05now, but you know, the Braves could become sellers.
- 9:09Marcelo Zuna maybe. I know that Ronald Lacuna Junior
- 9:13was floated a couple weeks ago on MLB Network, and that's one
- 9:16of the most ridiculous ideas I've ever heard.
- 9:18But they could sell others like Marcelo Zuna.
- 9:22It could be included there. Chris Dale.
- 9:25I don't, I don't know how likely it is, but I'm sure there's a
- 9:29lot of teams that are going to be calling the Braves about
- 9:30Chris Dale. And what's when's he back?
- 9:34Any idea? A couple weeks, I think.
- 9:38So that's one of those. And actually that leads me into
- 9:43another one I want to throw out there, Shane Bieber.
- 9:46The Guardians are going to sell and I think they might.
- 9:49He's coming back from Tommy John surgery.
- 9:51He's throwing off a mound. He's going to go on a rehab
- 9:53assignment soon. You'd have to take him without
- 9:56him getting back on a big league mound and his return from Tommy
- 9:58John surgery because he's not going to be back until early
- 10:01August. But it's Shane Bieber.
- 10:04He's an All Star caliber pitcher when he's right.
- 10:06So somebody might take him side on scene.
- 10:09To third base, because we know the Cubs are in the market now.
- 10:13Matt Shaw just does not hit. And if you're going to win a
- 10:15World Series, it feels like you can't have that kind of
- 10:17offensive hole at a position like third base.
- 10:20There's a ton out there. One of them potentially Nolan
- 10:24Arnado. I don't see the Cards helping
- 10:26out. I don't see the Pirates helping
- 10:28out with Brian Hayes unless it's a offer that they can't refuse
- 10:32and then he get into, you know, the Ryan Mcmahons of the world,
- 10:35Suarez. Now, Suarez is kind of a
- 10:37different 1. And that's going to be a big
- 10:38one, too. You know, Arayas with the
- 10:39Orioles is fine. What do you go through?
- 10:41And you look at 3rd baseman knowing.
- 10:43But it's not just the Cubs. The Yankees also desperately
- 10:47need a third baseman. They can move Jazz Chism back
- 10:49over to second base. The Dodgers, there's another one
- 10:53is that just get the third baseman.
- 10:54It feels like there's going to be some heavy hitters in that
- 10:56same market. Yes, absolutely.
- 10:58And I think the one who, if I can put my Cubs fan hat on for a
- 11:03second, I'm all about a Eugenio Suarez is a rental with that
- 11:07kind of power. You don't even have to put them
- 11:10in the middle of the lineup. You could bat him 6th or 7th and
- 11:13they just do just do your thing and hit your Bob in the 6th or
- 11:167th hole. That'd be that'd be a coup to go
- 11:18out and get him and actually think if when for the Cubs, if
- 11:21you're talking to Arizona, you can try to loop in Beryl Kelly
- 11:23too. Two birds with one stone right
- 11:25there. But yeah, like Ryan McMahon is
- 11:28definitely going to go. Arenado is interesting because
- 11:31the Cardinals could still kind of be buyers, but also trade
- 11:36Arenado. It's just because they have
- 11:39enough infielders that it is they could still stay in
- 11:42contention without Arenado and he's not like he's that great
- 11:45anymore and they could shed some of his salary.
- 11:48I feel like the Yankees and Arenado is going to end up being
- 11:53the eventually and their defense is so bad it's they can deal
- 11:58with him not being that great of a hitter.
- 11:59They just need a good defender at 3rd and he's still an
- 12:01excellent defender at third base.
- 12:03So I my feel is they're not to the Yankees is going to work.
- 12:07The Brewers are one game back as we hit the All Star break.
- 12:12I don't know how well I do know how they're they got there.
- 12:15They play. They play the game the right
- 12:16way. I love the way that Murphy's got
- 12:18his team playing. How big of a threat are they to
- 12:21the Cubs winning the division? Legitimate threat 100% there is.
- 12:27They are one of the best organizations in baseball, if
- 12:31not deepest at just getting absolutely the maximum output
- 12:35out of out of their their players, organizational guys,
- 12:38stars, you name it. They are so good at getting the
- 12:41most out of their talent and maximizing everything.
- 12:44And the scary thing is from the Cubs perspective, Jackson
- 12:49Cherio, William Contreras haven't really hit that well
- 12:51this year. And we know they're better
- 12:53hitters than that. So they're probably going to
- 12:55pick it up. And then they're they're
- 12:56pitching. It's like between Mesrowski,
- 13:00Chad Patrick, Logan Henderson, they're bringing these guys up
- 13:03and sending them back down because they have so much depth
- 13:05in the rotation being while the Cubs are starving for for
- 13:08another arm, but the Brewers have so much depth in the
- 13:10rotation. It's probably, yeah, it's
- 13:14probably going to go down to the wire here.
- 13:16I I still think the Cubs are going to win the division, but
- 13:19the Brewers are absolutely a team that scares me.
- 13:22And look at look at Andrew Vaughn, boy.
- 13:24I'm not scared of the Reds or Cardinals.
- 13:26And look at what? Look at Andrew.
- 13:27Vaughn, since he's been, he's been unbelievable.
- 13:32And and it's one of those things sometimes a guy kind of can feel
- 13:36like he's freed and get out of a really, really terrible team.
- 13:41It it almost in similar vein. Obviously he's far more
- 13:45talented, but last night during the Home Run Derby, I was just
- 13:48dreaming on if a good organization could get their
- 13:51hands on ODL Cruz and what would be possible there.
- 13:56Ryan O'hearn is an All Star starter.
- 13:59I've watched Ryan O'hearn for a long time.
- 14:02I didn't believe he'd ever be an All Star starter.
- 14:03Maybe he can put together that kind of year.
- 14:06Does that say something about maybe the first base position in
- 14:08the American League? A little bit, yeah.
- 14:12It's, I think things got really the ALDH.
- 14:17It was like Rafael Devers got traded to the National League.
- 14:23So then he got basically just removed off the ballot.
- 14:26Some, some guys were hurt, you know, rookers, rookers there.
- 14:29Rookers should have been starting over here.
- 14:31But you know how how I was going to say, how do you get
- 14:35Sacramento fans to vote? But I mean, Jacob Wilson be
- 14:37popular. So I don't know.
- 14:39Sometimes there's no rhyme or reason to it.
- 14:43The NLDH is a lot more stacked with Otani, Kyle Schwarber and
- 14:47Saya Suzuki's not even here. So sometimes there's just
- 14:50imbalance. Are you buying the Red Sox run?
- 14:55A little bit, yeah. I mean, Bregman's back,
- 14:58Yoshida's back, Roman Anthony, I think is definitely the real
- 15:01thing. If you look at the rotation
- 15:04there, like Geolito's starting to look like the Geolito bull
- 15:07there, and Baio looks amazing and like there should be more in
- 15:13Walker Bueller. I do think that the front office
- 15:17is very eager to buy in front of the trade deadline just to show
- 15:21the fans, hey, we sold Devers, but that wasn't because we
- 15:24wanted to be sellers. That was because we think he's a
- 15:26bad fit here. But we really want to go for it
- 15:29and we really believe in this team.
- 15:30So I think they're going to be very aggressive, maybe first
- 15:34base, which remember they once Cassis got hurt, they tried to
- 15:38get Devers the move to 1st and he refused.
- 15:41You know who'd be a nice fit there?
- 15:42I believe the Diamondbacks are going to be sellers.
- 15:45Josh Naylor. Yeah, you hear his name that
- 15:48he's that the snakes are going to make him available.
- 15:50I I I'm just surprised. So let's stay in that division.
- 15:53Jays have a two game lead. They lost the series in
- 15:56Sacramento. Just a head scratcher after
- 15:58playing as well as they were give the A's credit.
- 16:00Their plucky team. Yankees are the Yankees.
- 16:03I don't think they're as good as some years, but they're still
- 16:06the Yankees after all. How's this going to shake up If
- 16:09you if we go on record today as to who wins the American League
- 16:12East knowing the Jays have a two game lead as we sit here at the
- 16:15break, how do do you see it ending up?
- 16:18The only thing I'm really sure of is no Orioles.
- 16:21I guess I could probably say I don't think the Rays can hang
- 16:24either. But man, I definitely think the
- 16:26Red Sox are legitimate. I don't think the Yankees are
- 16:29going anywhere. I don't think the Blue Jays are
- 16:30going anywhere. The Blue Jays offensively during
- 16:34that run from like Memorial Day up until that last series, they
- 16:38were after almost six runs a game.
- 16:40And it wasn't, you always think of Vlad or Beau Bichette or
- 16:45George Springer, who looked like the Astros version of George
- 16:47Springer for a long time. But it was it was, you know,
- 16:51Alejandro Kirk, who's an All Star.
- 16:52He was Addison Barger and David Schneider getting big hits and
- 16:56Nathan Ruth. Like it's up and down the line
- 16:59of every single guy's producing. I think it's real.
- 17:02I think they really are that good offensive, probably.
- 17:04So yeah, I think the Jays are going to be there.
- 17:07If pressed, I guess I might just take the Yankees, but man, I
- 17:14wouldn't be surprised at all if the Blue Jays are.
- 17:16Red Sox won it. We still have a couple weeks of
- 17:18baseball before the trade deadline or a little less than
- 17:21two weeks. But Ken and I were talking
- 17:23earlier in the week about the Angels and in an American League
- 17:26that looks pretty open, they haven't made the playoffs since
- 17:292014. They haven't won a playoff game
- 17:32since 2009. For a fan base that just hasn't
- 17:36seen it, they've spent and it just hasn't gone their way.
- 17:39Could the Angels be a team because we know the twins aren't
- 17:41going to spend, the Rays aren't going to spend.
- 17:43There's a bunch of those wild card teams in the race or on the
- 17:46periphery of the race that aren't going to spend.
- 17:48Could we see the Angels, if they have a good, you know, 11 game
- 17:51stretch here coming out of the break that they could be a team
- 17:53decides, you know what, let's go for it because it's been so
- 17:56long. Yes, 100%.
- 17:58That's that's what they will and that's what they should do.
- 18:02It's four games out, like you're in it.
- 18:05If you're four games out of a playoff spot, you're in it.
- 18:07And we've seen teams take a wild card all the way to the World
- 18:10Series. I don't think they're good
- 18:12enough. Absolutely not.
- 18:13But you've got to try. You've got to try because you
- 18:16never know. So yes, I absolutely think if
- 18:19they're anywhere, as you said, even on the periphery, that they
- 18:22definitely should try to make a move or to and and they they
- 18:26should be aggressive. I mean, it's look we we talked
- 18:29about for years, man, they're wasting Mike Truss prime.
- 18:32Well, it's over. He's post prime now, but still
- 18:3633 years old. He has 17 bombs and 70 games
- 18:39like he he could still play. It'd be nice to see him on the
- 18:42big stage. What do you do for you the
- 18:44Kansas City Royals? I I think that they can kind of,
- 18:51I mean, they're 4 1/2 out. So basically what I just said,
- 18:54like they should try. And at this front office,
- 18:56they've shown that they will try.
- 18:58But if they fall back, I could see them kind of like selling on
- 19:03the margins a little bit and trying to reload for next year.
- 19:07Like there's, you know, Seth Lugo, maybe you just do what you
- 19:11could get for him. He has a player option for next
- 19:13year. So he's it's almost free agency,
- 19:17somebody like Jonathan India, maybe Michael Lorenzen, stuff
- 19:21like that. Like you can just kind of sell
- 19:23around the edges and still be ready to reload for next year.
- 19:28While we're talking about the central my Twins, it's a
- 19:30potential lame duck status if you don't know what the front
- 19:33office is going to be there and there's some big things that you
- 19:36could do. I mean, if you think that Royce
- 19:37Lewis is cooked this maybe somebody is willing to take him
- 19:40on and think that they can reclamate him.
- 19:42The big contract with Correa and of course Ken mentioned Joe
- 19:45Ryan, There's a lot of names out there for this Twins team
- 19:48knowing that they are for sale and they will be sold.
- 19:51You did anticipate soon. Do you want a front office that
- 19:54doesn't know they're going to be there running that kind of and
- 19:58trading away maybe the future of your organization?
- 20:02No, you don't. But I also think that you're
- 20:07you're trying to impress. If you're the front, let's say
- 20:10you're Derek Valerie, you're trying to show the next owner
- 20:15that you're worth retaining. So I think you go for it and you
- 20:18just try to make the playoffs and hope that they can make a
- 20:21run to like the ALCS or even the World Series.
- 20:24And then when you get a new boss, say, hey, look, we just
- 20:27made a deep playoff run, you got to keep me.
- 20:29So I think they're going to try. And and lastly, we'll get you
- 20:33out of here on this just because this team's 3 1/2 games out.
- 20:36This was a lot of people's chic pick this year to represent the
- 20:39American League and it's the Rangers.
- 20:41Degrom's having a terrific year of Aldi's, unbelievable.
- 20:44They've obviously Seeger when he's in the lineup, Carter
- 20:47likewise Garcia likewise. Are the Texas a playoff team?
- 20:51We'll put Texas, we'll ask you this way.
- 20:53Rangers going to make the playoffs.
- 20:55Yay or nay? I'll say no, I'm bailing on.
- 20:58I was, I was one of the biggest, the defenders of the Rangers
- 21:02heading into the year I loved. Him.
- 21:03I had a point in the American. League.
- 21:05I did too. Things just haven't clicked
- 21:08offensively on the whole. Now they've gotten big games
- 21:11here and there. But like Adelis Garcia, I
- 21:13thought he was going to be more like 2023.
- 21:15No, Evan Carter a little bit. Now recently he started to pick
- 21:20it up, but like Wyatt Langford kind of thought was already
- 21:23going to be an All Star caliber player.
- 21:24That hasn't happened. Marcus Simeon was brutal for the
- 21:28first two months. Just Jock Peterson, just
- 21:32horrific isn't at the plate. Jake Berger hasn't really helped
- 21:35at the plate. It's just so many things that I
- 21:38thought would go right offensively have gone completely
- 21:41terribly. So my expectation is
- 21:44everything's just not going to turn around on a dime.
- 21:47Like you're not just going to get back from the break and all
- 21:48of a sudden have everybody hitting like we thought they
- 21:51would. So it just seems like a bad mix
- 21:53right now. But you know what?
- 21:55Flags fly forever, and they got their World Series in 2020. 30

- 23:02John Bowen Camp, Associated Press, I would call it
- 23:05troops.com, etcetera, etcetera joins us to recap the media
- 23:10availability today. McCollum and some of the Iowa
- 23:13players. Former Iowa player Trent Owen
- 23:15Freeman out four to six weeks, but sounds like we'll be back
- 23:18for the season. But Owen Freeman real injuries
- 23:21a. Real injury, not a finger
- 23:23injury. You keep him out a couple months
- 23:24it. Was wild, wasn't it?
- 23:26Hello. John Bowen, Camp Trenton.
- 23:27Ken, how are you? I'm good.
- 23:30How you doing? Doing pretty well.
- 23:32So I want to get just you want for a pick your brain on what
- 23:35you saw today. I want to start though, with
- 23:38Bennett Sturtz, who's kind of the given when it comes to the
- 23:40Drake players as to at least on the surface, how we think he's
- 23:43going to fit in. And I think part and parcel to
- 23:46that is, you know, just, we, we saw him play against good
- 23:49competition, right? Texas Tech, really good team,
- 23:52Missouri, a really good team. Those two teams played in the in
- 23:55the tournament, beat Mizzou, lost to the Red Raiders.
- 23:59But we've seen him do it before. I I'm anxious to.
- 24:02Did you get your take on what when you watch Sturtz play, does
- 24:06he look like a Big 10 player to you?
- 24:09Yes, no, I think it's really good.
- 24:13I think that I think there is it's the it's the it's the I
- 24:17mean, obviously the scoring is there, but it's the court
- 24:20vision, it's the understanding the game.
- 24:23And I mean, when you're putting together a new roster to get a
- 24:27guy like that, you're way ahead of the game.
- 24:30You know, at that point when then and he was one of the first
- 24:33ones to commit. And so when when they got him,
- 24:36it was like, OK, not net. You've got your star now.
- 24:39Now you build around him and I think I think Ben Mccollum's
- 24:42done a really good job of that. But you know, to to go back to
- 24:45your question, yeah, I think he's really good and I think
- 24:48he's going to be really good in the Big 10.
- 24:50And I mean, I again, he showed it last year against power
- 24:53conference team. There's there's a lot of talent
- 24:57there to like. When you see him listed, you
- 25:00know, top 20 NBA prospect, I think that's certainly eye
- 25:03opening for a guy that didn't have AD one offer coming out of
- 25:06high school. And they can they can find him
- 25:08all over the place. How?
- 25:08Old is he? Is he?
- 25:09That's that's working against it means got to be 2220. 2122,
- 25:14yeah, probably something in that range.
- 25:17And I think a reason that I'm optimistic that they're going to
- 25:20hit the ground running is just all those Drake guys, right?
- 25:22You have that kind of continuity.
- 25:24Ben McCollum coaches hard. I think we've seen that.
- 25:27The videos that have come out looking back at last year at
- 25:30Drake, he's a guy that way. But when you're not just going
- 25:33to a new place, but you're bringing five guys with you that
- 25:35know what the expectations are, I think that's a huge help for
- 25:39the other 13 guys on that roster.
- 25:42Right. And it's not just, I mean, it's
- 25:44five guys that know the system, actually 6 if you throw in the
- 25:47red shirt player, they know the system, they know what he wants,
- 25:51they know what he likes, they know how he is.
- 25:53But these are also guys that want, I mean, they won 31 games
- 25:57last year, they won a conference title, they won a conference
- 26:00tournament, they went to the second round of the MC turn.
- 26:03These guys know how to win. And when you're doing
- 26:06intangibles and you start and in college basketball is an awful
- 26:10lot, even in this transfer portal era is still a lot about
- 26:13intangible and chemistry and whatever else.
- 26:16And I think when you've got that foundation, when you've got that
- 26:19core, now you did, now you build around it.
- 26:22And he's done a really good job of that in my mind.
- 26:24But you've got a really good base to start from because these
- 26:28guys know how to win. Was Trey Thompson there today?
- 26:32No, and and part of it he cannot as, as and he may have been
- 26:36there like watching, I don't know.
- 26:38I got there. I was a little late because I
- 26:41had, I had, I had a phone interview to do, but.
- 26:44You can't do any. Sort of instruction with him,
- 26:47yeah, until the fall gets here. So I asked him, I, I sat down
- 26:52with Ben McCollum yesterday and and I asked him about that and
- 26:55he said that that they can't do any instruction with him until
- 26:58the school year start. Brendan Hassan back out there.
- 27:01Saw some clips from him on social media knocking down 3
- 27:05pointers. He was a guy that had been out
- 27:06for a little bit. What do we expect for him?
- 27:09He, I think he's going to be a starter.
- 27:11He's going to play certainly 20 plus minutes a game.
- 27:13Is he going to be a guy though that they rely on for you know,
- 27:1632 type minutes a game? Or is he going to be maybe in
- 27:19that 25 range? Something like that, when you're
- 27:22kind of looking at a minute's breakdown and how he fits in and
- 27:24getting all the pieces working together.
- 27:27Probably in the high 20s, I would think, you know, in that
- 27:3025 to 28 range. But he can shoot the ball.
- 27:33There's no doubt about it. You look at his numbers from
- 27:36last year and and you know, throughout his career, he can,
- 27:39he can shoot the three. And again, he's done a really
- 27:42good job in the composition of this roster of finding guys that
- 27:47can shoot. And, and I mean, and, and, and
- 27:50it's not just even the guards, it's some of his bigs can, can
- 27:54step out and shoot. So to get a guy again, to get a
- 27:57guy like that that that that had good numbers last year, it
- 28:01wasn't really a big, big part of that Kansas State team, but
- 28:04still a really good player. And so to get somebody like that
- 28:07one out and OK, now you've got your score, Now you've got that
- 28:10that two guard that you lost, you know, that you didn't have
- 28:14with this, you know, when you were starting to put this
- 28:16together. So I think I think it was a
- 28:17really good pick up for them to get him.
- 28:20What was the take away or two from what you heard afterwards
- 28:23or saw during once you got there?
- 28:26One year, a couple of year takeaways, John.
- 28:29They're, they're, it's a very intense workout that they do.
- 28:33I mean, this isn't just summer. Let's let's play, pick a ball,
- 28:36get to know each other. I mean, there's a lot of
- 28:38installation going on. There's a lot of, you know, and,
- 28:41and, and he, when we talked yesterday, you know, he said, I
- 28:45really want intensity. And he goes, and I told myself,
- 28:48I, I think you have read some real intense workouts and he
- 28:51goes, I think we could be better.
- 28:53And so I'm thinking if that's the level he wants to get at,
- 28:57you know, these guys are really going to have to get after it,
- 29:00and that's a good sign. And to me, it's, you know, in
- 29:04talking to the players today, it's that way in the weight
- 29:06room, it's that way, you know, in individual workouts, they
- 29:09want you and they're doing this, this, this, and and they want
- 29:12you talking and they want you, you know, to be, you know, they
- 29:15want the communication there. So there's, like I said, a lot
- 29:18of intensity with this group and and you can see it again today.
- 29:21I mean, I know they only got a couple weeks left in the summer
- 29:24workout, but these guys really get after it.
- 29:26And I mean, they, they hustle. And that's what that he wants
- 29:30out of his team. That's what made that Drake team
- 29:31so good one. So was it night and day when you
- 29:33think back to McCaffrey at this point of the offseason, you
- 29:36know, when you'd get an opportunity to watch the team
- 29:38practices as a whole? I mean, is, is it?
- 29:41Is it the contrast stark? Yeah.
- 29:44I mean it was, I mean, I mean Franz teams were very, you know,
- 29:47and he would always say this. They were very business like,
- 29:50you know, and I mean it was just we're just going to go about our
- 29:52business. These guys are little.
- 29:55I mean, these guys have a lot more intensity to it.
- 29:57And you know, I'm not saying one way is right one way.
- 29:59Sorry, it's a different, you know, kind of a style.
- 30:02But I mean, Franz teams were very, you know, he always talked
- 30:04about business, like come in, get your work done.
- 30:07You know, Ben McCollum is get your work done.
- 30:09But I want to hear you guys and I want you to, you know, to push
- 30:12each other. And you can see that in this
- 30:15group and you've seen that in the videos they've shown from
- 30:17the weight room. And I mean these guys really,
- 30:19these guys really get on each other.
- 30:21And I mean, they want they want to win.
- 30:23I mean, this isn't a, this isn't a let's take a year to rebuild.
- 30:27It's like, no, they want to get to the NCAA Tournament.
- 30:30They want to be in that upper half of the Big 10.
- 30:32They won't, they don't want to be playing on Wednesday in the
- 30:35Big 10 tournament. They want to play on Friday.
- 30:37So, so I mean, there you can just tell there is an intensity
- 30:41with this group that that I, I, I really like it.
- 30:44It's fun to watch them work. How do you think Kim Manuel is
- 30:47going to hold up being undersized at the center
- 30:50position? It's one thing to do it in the
- 30:51NBC play 20 minutes a game. They're hoping for a lot.
- 30:56Obviously out of him, out of the center position this year.
- 30:58How do you think he's going to hold up?
- 31:00I, I, I think the body is there. He's going to need help.
- 31:03They're going to have to find somebody to help him out inside
- 31:06because I don't think he can go 3536 minutes a game.
- 31:10You're going to have to find somebody or, or a combination
- 31:13thereof to give you a good 10A good solid 10.
- 31:17And you, one of the things we were talking about yesterday
- 31:19and, and he brought up about, and I think he said Matt Painter
- 31:23said, this is everybody. They always talks about, you
- 31:25know, getting stars. And he's like, sometimes you
- 31:27need that guy to play right field.
- 31:29You know, you need that. You need that guy to give you 10
- 31:32minutes. And so it's going to be really
- 31:34important, I think in, in, in, in the, in the rest of this
- 31:38summer here in the last week or so.
- 31:40And then to get in the fall to find that second person inside
- 31:44or third person to give you 10 minutes to give him a break
- 31:48because he can't do it all on his own.
- 31:50For Garris maybe? Maybe you know, but the one good
- 31:55thing I really like about him is, is, is, is I think he's he's
- 31:58going to, he's going to be a really good big, but he can step
- 32:00out and shoot 3. And so So what you know, how you
- 32:04know, how much is he going to be playing inside?
- 32:06We don't know yet. And, and again, they don't know
- 32:09yet because they haven't really seen a whole lot of him this
- 32:11summer. So again, that's going to be one
- 32:13of those. How does this?
- 32:14How does he fit in and and where do they kind of work around him?
- 32:19John Bowencamp joining us as we take a look inside Iowa
- 32:22basketball after media availability.
- 32:24One final name that was available today is Tate Sage.
- 32:28Talk about a guy there wasn't. I talked to a couple of Drake
- 32:31people and he committed to them. They're like, we'll see.
- 32:34And now he's been and maybe the most buzz, yeah, the most
- 32:39buzziest kind of guy this summer, like, look out here and
- 32:42maybe not for this year, but for the future, Take us in Tate Sage
- 32:45a little bit a guy at six foot seven, got some guard skills.
- 32:49Pretty intriguing prospect. We talked to him today and I
- 32:52mean, he was, he was like I was, I wanted to be.
- 32:56He didn't even visit Iowa when he committed.
- 32:59You know, it's just like I want to play for Coach Mack.
- 33:01And because he said I really like where I fit in in the
- 33:05system and I I like him. Again, he's going to be one of
- 33:08those guys. He's going to have to get a
- 33:09little stronger, But the body is there, the the length is there.
- 33:15And I think his ability is there.
- 33:17It's just a matter of can he take the, the bounding that that
- 33:21kind of comes with, you know, the big 10.
- 33:24So and he even admitted that he goes, I've got to get stronger.
- 33:26But he, you know, he, he's here to work.
- 33:29And so I, I think maybe he becomes a pleasant surprise,
- 33:34maybe not right away, but but I think probably at some point
- 33:38this year, he he is probably going to play a significant role
- 33:41on this team just by the way he plays and with his size and
- 33:45everything else. Again, it's all going to come
- 33:46back to how much, you know, can he put on some weight?
- 33:49Can he put on some muscle? But there's there, there is
- 33:52something there and I, and again, I think they tap into it
- 33:56as he goes along in his career. Quick baseball when John, as we
- 34:00talk about as we talk about your Dodgers and we see them, it's
- 34:04crazy to think that well, this team's really underachieving
- 34:07this year, got the second best record in baseball, best record
- 34:11in the National League. So I I guess I mean is this the
- 34:15bottom I mean? I mean, there's there's they're,
- 34:19they're only going to get better.
- 34:20You're going to get guys healthy again.
- 34:22You know, Glass now's back now, probably comes back here.
- 34:26They're going to fleece the twins out of one or two
- 34:28relievers, probably. Wow, which?
- 34:32Will. Bolster the bullpen, which will
- 34:34bolster the bullpen, you know, and they and maybe they go get
- 34:38an outfielder. Pie has been unbelievable.
- 34:42You know, I mean, there's a lot of guys out there that that that
- 34:46might be really good fit for them.
- 34:48And I mean, it's, I don't know if you roll the dice and say,
- 34:51well, we'll just go with Michael Conforto the rest of the year.
- 34:54But again, there's, there's plenty of options out there.
- 34:58And like, and I've said this before, they haven't even come
- 35:02close to being their best and they're 5 1/2 games up right
- 35:05now. And so probably everybody should
- 35:08be frightened. But that's just me.
- 35:11Do they not like Tanner Scott? I mean, is he under?
- 35:13Is he underachieved? He is really underachieved.
- 35:16Yeah, that's why I think they do have to go find the clothes.
- 35:19Duran from the Twins. Yeah.
- 35:21No, no. Yes.
- 35:22And if it and if it costs and if it costs a couple of Class A
- 35:27prospects, which is probably what the twins will want because
- 35:30they're not very good at trading.
- 35:34So, so I mean, I, I do think, I do think you will go see them
- 35:38get somebody like that. You, there will be some, you
- 35:42know, and I mean, everybody's going to be looking for closers,
- 35:44but they are going to need some relief help because unless I
- 35:47mean, Tanner Scott's been so inconsistent and I just, I don't
- 35:50know how you trust that going in October. 30 seconds left.
- 35:54Jack Dryer's been unbelievable. I mean, who saw this coming,
- 35:57right? Yeah, I mean, he's been really
- 36:00good in in the role and I mean, I'd like to see him do a little
- 36:02bit more, but but where he's at right now with him, I I think
- 36:06he's got a really good season. Yep, I'm with you John, Thanks
- 36:09for jumping on. Appreciate you recapping what
- 36:11you saw earlier today. Thank you John Bowencamp, talk
- 36:13to you down the road brother for having me.
- 36:15Yep, good to talk to him. Yep, Yep, bye bye John Bowencamp
- 36:17as we check in on the Hawks and snippet or two on his squad.
- 36:20He's got to hustle home so he can talk to Brian Wardle.
- 36:24That's his latest interview for Blue Ribbon Magazine.
- 36:27How many teams does he do for them?
- 36:29Oh. 3040. Sometimes he do that man.
- 36:32I know last time we had him on, I think he was talking to
- 36:34McDermott and Jacobson that day. So I think he does kind of a
- 36:37bunch of the upper Midwest teams.
- 36:39It's kind of the part of the blue ribbon that he does.
- 36:42All right, good stuff. We'll take a time out.
- 36:43Transplays of the day or next. There are a couple of WNB.
- 36:46Why? Why are they doing this?
- 36:47Why? Why are they playing tonight?
- 36:49You got to play the games. Not everybody plays tomorrow.
- 36:53Not everybody likes baseball. No, I know.
- 36:55But are they playing? Are they are they playing
- 36:57tomorrow? I don't know.
- 36:58I haven't looked that far ahead. I got to get through the day
- 37:00all. Right Trent's plays of the day
- 37:02circus sports sponsor them. They're next.
- 37:04Miller and Condon Iowa Sports Radio Network Hi Miller and
- 37:07Condon. Final couple of minutes of our
- 37:09program as you just heard off the bench Coming up next Major
- 37:12League All Star games, scuba versus Skeens.
- 37:16Those are your starters. Will you dabble in the MVP
- 37:19market? No, do not play the MVP market.
- 37:21I will be playing a couple of props.
- 37:24I got both schemes and Scubble both over 1 1/2 strikeouts plus
- 37:29money on both of them so if I hit one we win.
- 37:31Do you know how far they'll go? Are they both out after the one
- 37:34inning? I think just one inning for both
- 37:36of them, so let's get a couple of strikeouts for both guys and
- 37:38we're going to be sitting pretty.
- 37:39It's an automatic bet every year I got to take the American
- 37:41League I. Mean it's.
