- 0:01Hello, I'm Adam Cozort, and I want to thank you for your
- 0:05interest in this series of studies through the book of
- 0:09Hebrews. If you've gotten to this point,
- 0:12you have probably listened to our first two lessons, our first
- 0:17two classes going through the 1st 2 chapters of the book of
- 0:21Hebrews. Unfortunately, in our normal
- 0:25Bible class setting where these have been recorded, we had a
- 0:31technical glitch when it came to the third class and the
- 0:35recording did not become available.
- 0:39And so because of that, I am going to endeavor to lay out for
- 0:44you the basics of what we covered in that third class,
- 0:49which essentially covered from Hebrews chapter 3 verse one to
- 0:52chapter 4, verse 10. And while I won't be able to go
- 0:57through and completely recreate the class and certainly not be
- 1:02able to recreate all of the components of the discussion of
- 1:07the class, I do want to make sure that you have available to
- 1:11you the basic dynamics and the the core discussion of what was
- 1:18covered in that class. So we may not have the same
- 1:22length, it may not be a full 45 minutes, but I want to spend
- 1:26some time with you in this particular audio recording,
- 1:31going through and examining chapters 3 and four and giving
- 1:36you the baseline for the discussion in our next class,
- 1:42because it's going to pick up with this very area because
- 1:47they're completely connected. And so let's go through and
- 1:51examine chapters 3 and 4. As we've talked about already,
- 1:57and as is going to be the core thrust throughout the book of
- 2:00Hebrews, we need to be mindful of the fact that this letter is
- 2:05written to Jewish Christians. These are people who are already
- 2:09believers in Jesus. These are people who have
- 2:12already professed their faith and have been obedient to Jesus,
- 2:17but they're struggling and they're struggling with whether
- 2:20or not Jesus is enough. They're struggling with whether
- 2:23or not they should remain with Jesus, continue to follow after
- 2:28Jesus, or whether it's time to just go back to the old
- 2:33traditions and to go back to the way that things were.
- 2:37Chapter 3 is really going to be the first instance of the
- 2:43discussion focusing on that particular mindset and those
- 2:48questions that they have in their mind.
- 2:51It's also the first of two sections, as we talked about it
- 2:54in our class, of where the writer or speaker of the book of
- 2:59Hebrews goes on a bit of a rabbit chase.
- 3:02The other one is going to be over in Chapter 7, But all of
- 3:05the discussion so far has been about Jesus, about who He is,
- 3:09about what He has come to do, and all of the things that He
- 3:13has given to redeem mankind and to count us as brethren and to
- 3:20save us from our sins. That being said, chapter 3 is
- 3:25going to begin with the continuation of that discussion,
- 3:29but then it's going to move into something specifically for this
- 3:32audience at this particular time.
- 3:34Let me show you what I mean in verses one through 6.
- 3:38The continuation of what's been discussed in chapters 1 and 2 is
- 3:42evident when the writer of Hebrews says, Therefore, holy
- 3:47brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the
- 3:51apostle and high priest of our confession.
- 3:53Christ Jesus, who was faithful to him who appointed him as
- 3:57Moses, also was faithful in all his house.
- 4:00For this one has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses,
- 4:04in as much as he who built the house has more honor than the
- 4:08house. For every house is built by
- 4:10someone. But he who built all things is
- 4:13God. And Moses indeed was faithful in
- 4:16all his house as a servant for a testimony of those things which
- 4:20would be spoken afterward. But Christ as a son over his own
- 4:24house, whose house we are, if we hold fast the confidence and the
- 4:28rejoicing of the hope firm to the end.
- 4:32In the 1st 6 verses he's talking here and he he makes the
- 4:35emphasis of talking about Jesus as the apostle and high priest
- 4:40of our confession. Now this is key because this
- 4:44idea of Jesus being the high priest and also the apostle, and
- 4:49remember in Greek the apostle, it's the word apostolos, which
- 4:53means 1 cent on a mission. The apostle and high priest of
- 4:57our confession is going to be the topic of the discussion all
- 5:00the way to chapter 8. It's going to weave in and out
- 5:03of a couple of these side discussions, but the core of
- 5:06everything that's being discussed in chapters 34567 and
- 5:118 is Jesus as our high priest. This is important when you
- 5:15recognize the mindset of the Jewish Christian and the role
- 5:20that the priesthood and especially the high priesthood
- 5:23had in Old Testament Judaism or in the Old Testament Israelite
- 5:30system. And so he's going to begin here
- 5:34in chapter 3 by honing in on this idea of Jesus as our high
- 5:40priest. But here in chapter 3, the
- 5:43emphasis is going to be on faithfulness.
- 5:47Notice he says in verse 2 that Jesus was faithful to him who
- 5:50appointed him in the same way that Moses also was faithful.
- 5:55So in harkening back to these Jewish Christians who are
- 5:58thinking about going back under the old law or trying to once
- 6:01again follow the law of Moses, he reminds them that Jesus was
- 6:07faithful just like Moses was faithful.
- 6:11But there's a very distinct difference in these two because
- 6:15Moses was faithful in what he was asked to do, but the house
- 6:22that Moses was over wasn't his. He was simply a servant in that
- 6:27house. That's what verse 5 says.
- 6:29Moses indeed was faithful in all his house as a servant, but the
- 6:34house didn't belong to him. The house belonged to God as
- 6:38Moses was faithful in leading Israel and in serving Israel and
- 6:42in being the spokesman for God before the people of Israel.
- 6:48Israel wasn't his. He was a servant of God who took
- 6:54care of Israel for God, but Israel wasn't his.
- 7:01Jesus is different. Jesus is a son over his own
- 7:06house. That's the church.
- 7:09That's Christianity, he says He's a son over his own house,
- 7:14whose house we are, if we hold fast the confidence and the
- 7:18rejoicing of the hope firm to the end.
- 7:21Notice the way that he's going to flow through this here in
- 7:24chapter 3. He begins by talking about how
- 7:28Jesus was faithful and Moses was faithful, but Jesus is a
- 7:35faithful high priest. He's a faithful apostle of our
- 7:39confession over his own house and we are that house.
- 7:44But there's this little 2 letter word that's used in verse 6 that
- 7:48becomes very important to the rest of our discussion today,
- 7:53and that is that word. If he says he is a son over his
- 7:57house, whose house we are, If we hold fast the confidence and the
- 8:04rejoicing of the hope firm to the end, we are that house.
- 8:09We are his people. We are the ones to whom he is
- 8:12faithful. If we're faithful, if we are
- 8:19ones who hold fast the confidence, who continue to
- 8:26believe and practice the things that we have believed in
- 8:29practice up till this point. Now here's where he's going to
- 8:33make a turn. Because as he goes into this
- 8:37discussion of this idea of faithfulness and the emphasis of
- 8:42the fact that Jesus was faithful and Moses was faithful and
- 8:46therefore we need to be faithful, He's going to hearken
- 8:49back once again to the Old law. He's going to hearken back to
- 8:55the Old Testament and to the Israelites of old as the example
- 9:02of why this is the case and how it applies to the New Testament
- 9:06Christian. To do that, he's going to
- 9:09utilize one of the writer of the book of Hebrews favorite
- 9:13mechanisms and that is the Psalms.
- 9:16He's going to use the Psalms to illustrate the New Testament
- 9:19point. Let's see how he does it in
- 9:23chapter 3, beginning in verse 7. He says, therefore, as the Holy
- 9:27Spirit says today, if you will hear his voice, do not harden
- 9:32your hearts as in the rebellion in the day of trial in the
- 9:35wilderness, where your Father's tested me, tried me, and saw my
- 9:39works 40 years. Therefore I was angry with that
- 9:42generation and said they always go astray in their heart and
- 9:46they have not known my ways. So I swore in my wrath They
- 9:50shall not enter my rest. The quote here in verses 7
- 9:55through 11 of Hebrews 3 is actually from the book of Psalms
- 10:01and it's in Psalm 95, verses 7 through 11.
- 10:06And so if you go back to Psalm 95, you'll notice that in the
- 10:10first half of the Psalm you have this call to worship God and
- 10:14this call to bow down to God. And if you actually go through
- 10:18and read it, you read the first half of the Psalm and you're
- 10:20like, yes, absolutely. This is this is great, this is
- 10:25wonderful. It begins, oh, come, let us sing
- 10:27to the Lord. Let us shout joyfully to the
- 10:30rock of our salvation. Let me let us come before his
- 10:33presence with Thanksgiving. Let us shout joyfully to Him,
- 10:36Psalms, for the Lord is the great God and the great King
- 10:39above all gods. In his hands are the deep places
- 10:42of the earth, the heights of the hills are His.
- 10:44Also the sea is His, for He made it, and his hands formed the dry
- 10:49land. Oh, come, let us worship and bow
- 10:52down. Let us kneel before the Lord our
- 10:55Maker, for He is our God, and we are the people of his pasture
- 10:59and the sheep of his hand. If you stop there, everything's
- 11:03rosy and everything's perfect. But the psalmist doesn't stop
- 11:07there, and the Hebrews writer doesn't actually start there.
- 11:13He starts with the second-half of verse 7 where he says today,
- 11:17if you will hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the
- 11:22rebellion and as the day of trial in the wilderness when
- 11:29your father's tested me, tried me, though they saw my work.
- 11:33The terms here for rebellion and trial in the New King James
- 11:38Version in verse 8 are actually references to a specific
- 11:43location in a specific situation.
- 11:46The word rebellion is the Hebrew word meribah, and the word trial
- 11:55is the Hebrew word Massa. Where this takes us back to is
- 12:01all the way back to the days of Moses in Exodus chapter 17.
- 12:07In Exodus 17, the children of Israel have come out of the land
- 12:12of Egypt. They have crossed the Red Sea,
- 12:15but they are not yet to Mount Sinai, and they've come to a
- 12:20place at the start of Exodus 17 where they are in the wilderness
- 12:25and they have no water. They're camped at Refedim.
- 12:29There is no water, and they begin to murmur and to complain
- 12:33with Moses. And so they accuse Moses chapter
- 12:3817, verse 3, of going, taking them out of Egypt to kill them
- 12:44in the wilderness with thirst. And Moses cries out to the Lord,
- 12:50saying, What shall I do with this people?
- 12:51They're almost ready to stone me.
- 12:53And the Lord says to go and to take some of the elders of
- 12:56Israel, to take the rod, and to stand before the rock in Horeb,
- 13:04and to strike the rock, and water will come out of it.
- 13:08Moses is going to do that. And verse 7 says he called the
- 13:12name of the place Massa and Meribah because of the
- 13:16contention of the children of Israel and because they tempted
- 13:20the Lord, saying, is the Lord among us or not?
- 13:24Massa is the Hebrew word that carries with it the idea of
- 13:29trial or testing. And meribah is rebellion or
- 13:35contention. And so as you come back to Psalm
- 13:4195, you have this reminder that actually takes us all the way
- 13:48back to Exodus chapter 17 to this first generation of
- 13:52Israelites that are coming out of Egypt and how they rebelled
- 13:59against God. And and notice if you go back to
- 14:01Psalm 95 once again, he says that your Father's verse 9
- 14:07tested me tried me even though they saw my work for 40 years.
- 14:13I was grieved with that generation and said it is a
- 14:16people who go astray in their hearts and they do not know my
- 14:20ways. So I swore in my wrath they
- 14:23shall not enter my rest. God says that they will not
- 14:30enter the Promised land because they refused to be faithful.
- 14:35They always go astray in their hearts.
- 14:38Their hearts were hardened against God.
- 14:41And certainly as you read the book of Exodus and as you read
- 14:44the book of Numbers, you see this over and over again, even
- 14:48to the point in Numbers, chapters 13 and 14, where the
- 14:52children of Israel refused to enter the Promised land and try
- 14:56to bring about new leaders that will take them back to Egypt.
- 15:03It's that generation. And it's those mindsets that the
- 15:10writer of the book of Hebrews brings up here in Hebrews
- 15:14chapter 3. And they're not arbitrary, what
- 15:17he's trying to do. And we're going to see it in
- 15:19just a moment when we continue in verse 12.
- 15:23But what he's trying to do is he's trying to get them to think
- 15:27about their ancestors who did this way back then.
- 15:30And they've been spoken of and they've been thought of in
- 15:33derision because they quit, they turned back, they tested God.
- 15:39They God was never able to do enough to engender full faith in
- 15:44them that they would trust him, that he knew what he was doing.
- 15:48Well, what are these people trying to do?
- 15:52What? What are these people struggling
- 15:54with as New Testament Christians in the 1st century?
- 16:00Should I be faithful to Christ or should I try to, as the first
- 16:06generation did, go back to Egypt?
- 16:10Notice the way that the writer of the book of Hebrews puts it.
- 16:13Go back to Hebrews 3 if you haven't already done so, and
- 16:17let's pick up. In verse 12 he says, Beware,
- 16:20brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief
- 16:24in departing from the living God.
- 16:26But exhort one another daily while it is called today, lest
- 16:29any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
- 16:33For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning
- 16:37of our confidence steadfast to the end.
- 16:40While it is said today, if you will hear His voice, do not
- 16:45harden your hearts as in the rebellion.
- 16:47For who, having heard, rebelled? Indeed, was it not all who came
- 16:53out of Egypt led by Moses? Now with whom was he angry 40
- 16:57years? Was it not with those who
- 16:59sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness?
- 17:03And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest,
- 17:06but to those who did not obey? So we see that they could not
- 17:11enter in because of unbelief. Do you see the lesson that He's
- 17:16bringing out here? He says, Brethren, beware lest
- 17:20this kind of heart, this evil heart of unbelief begins to live
- 17:26in you in departing from the living God instead, don't let
- 17:31that take root, but exhort one another daily while it is called
- 17:35today. He then Harkins back to that
- 17:37statement at the end of verse 7, the beginning of verse 8.
- 17:39Today, if you will hear his voice, we've got to remain
- 17:44faithful. Who wasn't that rebelled?
- 17:49This is verses 16 through 19. Who was it who rebelled?
- 17:53It was those that came out of Egypt led by Moses.
- 17:56Moses was faithful going back to those first 6 verses.
- 18:00Those that followed him were not.
- 18:03So with whom was he angry? For 40 years?
- 18:06He wasn't angry with Moses, he was angry with those who sinned,
- 18:10those that were constantly tempting him, those that wanted
- 18:14to turn back and would refuse to do what was commanded of them.
- 18:19Who did he swear would not enter his rest?
- 18:22Those who wouldn't obey. And so he says, we see that they
- 18:27could not enter in because of unbelief.
- 18:31Once again, what's the struggle that these Jewish Christians are
- 18:34dealing with? It's the question of whether or
- 18:38not to continue to believe and to faithfully practice the
- 18:42things that are of Christ or whether to try to just go back
- 18:49to what their fathers always did.
- 18:52And it's interesting that the way that he presents it, the
- 18:55reality of what their fathers did should be setting into them
- 19:00that if we're going to go back to what our fathers did, our
- 19:04fathers didn't set the greatest example for us in a lot of these
- 19:08areas because they rebelled against God.
- 19:12They said what God is doing is not enough.
- 19:15And remember, if you go back to chapters one and two, He has
- 19:18spent these first two chapters showing the level of love and
- 19:23the greatness of what Jesus has done for us and for them and
- 19:28what he has put in place and what He has given up in order to
- 19:34be their Redeemer. O the question is, how are you
- 19:42going to respond? What are you going to do?
- 19:47But you see the discussions not done there and and as you're
- 19:49going to hear me talk about, and maybe you've already heard me
- 19:52talk about several times, these chapter divisions are man made.
- 19:55They're they're not original to the text.
- 19:58They have been placed there to help us to understand and, and
- 20:02to be able to reference things easier.
- 20:04But you know, a lot of times they will come right in the
- 20:08middle of a discussion and the discussions not over yet.
- 20:12So walk with me through the first few verses of chapter 4 as
- 20:16we continue to lay out the argument that's being made in
- 20:21chapter 4, verse 1. He says.
- 20:23Therefore, since a promise remains of entering his rest,
- 20:29let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it.
- 20:33So because of all of these things and remember this is this
- 20:39is kind of that that dual mindset he's talking about where
- 20:42they are now, but he's wanting them to remember where their
- 20:47forefathers were as the basis for what decision they're going
- 20:53to make today. And so he says therefore, since
- 20:57a promised remains of entering his rest, well in the Old
- 21:01Testament time, in the days of their fathers, that that
- 21:05original rest, that promised land was the land of Canaan.
- 21:09But that's not what we're discussing here.
- 21:12Here we're talking about the promised rest for the Christian
- 21:15for for the follower of Christ. So we're talking about heaven.
- 21:20So therefore, since a promise remains for the New Testament
- 21:24Christian of entering his rest, let us fear lest any of you seem
- 21:29to have come short of it. For indeed the gospel was
- 21:33preached to us, verse 2, as well as to them.
- 21:38But the word which they heard did not profit them, not being
- 21:42mixed with faith in those who heard it.
- 21:45For we who have believed do enter that rest, as He has said.
- 21:49So I swore in my wrath They shall not enter my rest,
- 21:54although the works were finished from the foundation of the
- 21:57world. For He has spoken in a certain
- 21:59place of the 7th day in this way, and God rested on the 7th
- 22:04day from all his works. And again in this place they
- 22:08shall not enter my rest. You're going to have here the
- 22:13sentiment that's going to be discussed about this idea of
- 22:17rest, and you have the statement going all the way back to
- 22:21Genesis chapter 2 that God rested on the 7th day from all
- 22:25His works, and that yet he says of those Israelites of old, they
- 22:31shall not enter my rest. The plan had already been put in
- 22:37place. God's goals and and God's
- 22:40intentions to bring Israel out of Egypt, to bring them to the
- 22:44promised land had been laid out all the way back to the days of
- 22:47Abraham. They'd actually been laid out,
- 22:50as verse 3 says, all the way from the foundation of the
- 22:52world. God knew what He was going to do
- 22:54and how He was going to do it, but He speaks concerning the 7th
- 22:59day as the day which He rested from all of His works.
- 23:05And then he says in Psalm 95, They shall not enter my rest.
- 23:11They won't come to the place where I rest.
- 23:16Since therefore verse 6, it remains that some must enter it,
- 23:20and those to whom it was first preached did not enter because
- 23:24of disobedience. Again he designates a certain
- 23:27day, saying in David the psalmist today, after such a
- 23:32long time as it has been said today, if you will hear his
- 23:35voice, do not harden your hearts.
- 23:39For if Joshua had given them rest, then he would not
- 23:42afterward have spoken of another day.
- 23:45There remains therefore a rest for the people of God, For he
- 23:50who has entered his rest has himself also ceased from his
- 23:55works as God did from his. Notice the emphasis of what he's
- 24:02laying out here in chapter 4. In chapter 3, he has talked
- 24:10about this idea of the the disobedience of Israel of old
- 24:16and the way that they rebelled and the way that they refused to
- 24:21follow through with serving God. And God says, I swore in my
- 24:27wrath, they shall not enter my rest.
- 24:29That's going to be quoted again here in chapter 4, but also the
- 24:33emphasis from verses 7 and 8 of chapter 3 and Psalm 95.
- 24:39Interestingly enough, they have the exact same verse structure.
- 24:43He says do not harden your hearts.
- 24:48He is pleading with them. Do not be like your ancestors
- 24:52were, because there's something still to look forward to that
- 24:56you are traveling to arrive at. They were leaving Egypt, trying
- 25:02to get to the promised land, trying to get back to that land
- 25:06of Canaan that God had said and promised Abraham and Isaac and
- 25:10Jacob that they were going to receive.
- 25:15They never made it because of their unbelief.
- 25:19But notice verse 6 says of chapter 4.
- 25:21Since therefore, it remains that some must enter it, and those to
- 25:26whom it was first preached did not enter because of
- 25:28disobedience, he designates a certain day, saying in David
- 25:33today there is a rest that is greater than the the promised
- 25:42land that Israel was going to. And that rest is the rest of
- 25:48eternal life. It is rest in the habitation of
- 25:52God, in the promises of God. He says in verse 8.
- 25:57For if Joshua had given them rest, then he would not
- 26:01afterward have spoken of another day.
- 26:05In other words, if the rest that God was looking to give them was
- 26:10rest in Canaan, then there would have been no reason for David to
- 26:16lay out his promises of rest, and there would be no reason for
- 26:20rest to be discussed in the context of the Christian life
- 26:25either. And yet, what does Jesus talk
- 26:28about in Matthew Chapter 11 verses 28 through 30, when he
- 26:33talks about the emphasis of Come unto me, all ye that labor, and
- 26:39are heavy laden, and I will give you rest, take my yoke upon you
- 26:45and learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and you
- 26:49shall find rest for your souls. There remains, therefore chapter
- 26:584, verse 9, a rest for the people of God.
- 27:04When he's talking about the people of God here, he's talking
- 27:07about Christians, the New Testament church, of which these
- 27:12recipients of this letter are already apart.
- 27:16He's not asking them to turn from the old law and follow
- 27:21after Christ. They've already said they're
- 27:24going to do that. The question is, are they going
- 27:31to be faithful? Are they going to be faithful
- 27:36like Jesus is faithful? Are they going to be faithful
- 27:41like Moses was faithful? Or are they instead going to be
- 27:47faithful like their ancestors of old were faithful, and that is
- 27:57not faithful at all, but instead quitting, failing to trust in
- 28:04God and turning back to the things that they prefer?
- 28:16There does remain a rest for the people of God.
- 28:19It is that final rest of heaven. It is that rest to which we
- 28:27continue to search and to move toward in our lives as we seek
- 28:35to serve God. This section where we're going
- 28:39to put our paws in it for this class in verse 10 says, for he
- 28:44who has entered his rest has himself also ceased from his
- 28:49works as God did from his. And let me just jump into verse
- 28:5411 a little bit. And this is where class #4 will
- 28:57pick up. But in verse 11 he says, let us
- 29:00therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall
- 29:06according to the same example of disobedience.
- 29:14Take the lesson of Israel of old, both from the statement of
- 29:19David in Psalm 95 and the incidents with Moses that were
- 29:24their origin point back in Exodus 17, and all of the things
- 29:28in between. Go back and look and let that
- 29:33teach you to be diligent, the Hebrews writer says, lest we
- 29:40fall according to the same example of disobedience.
- 29:47And yet how many times? Because it's so easy for us to
- 29:50look back at those Jewish Christians of old and say, see
- 29:54if you'd have just had more faith or, or why can't you have
- 29:57as much faith? This isn't a 1st century Jewish
- 30:02Christian problem. This is a human problem.
- 30:07We all have people that we know that have at one point believed
- 30:16and followed the things of God and now have left all of that
- 30:19behind. This is not a old condition that
- 30:25doesn't exist anymore, nor is it a condition that is only brought
- 30:32upon people of the origin and of the type of those to whom this
- 30:38letter is written. It's just as much a problem that
- 30:42we deal with now, and it's just as much a heart issue that we
- 30:46deal with now. So whether you're a Christian in
- 30:50the 1st century who's struggling with whether to remain faithful,
- 30:53or whether you're a Christian in the 21st century wondering
- 30:57whether or not it's worth it to stay faithful, passages such as
- 31:01Hebrews, chapters 3 and four are meant to help us reflect and
- 31:07help us to consider what the consequences are of failing to
- 31:13be faithful to Christ. That's where we're going to put
- 31:18a stop in it for this class. Thank you so much for your
- 31:23interest in our studies. We will have one more section
- 31:26that we are going to have to do in this manner because the
- 31:29recordings did not take, but you will have the next several
- 31:34classes in their original class form.
- 31:38And so I hope that you will continue to study through them
- 31:41and I hope that you enjoy them and we'll look forward to being
- 31:46with you next time. Thank you so much.
