- 0:46Speaker 4: All right back out here Broncos Park Power by common Spirit.
- 0:49Speaker 4: We're joined by our good friend Jeff LANGWALDESPN dot com.
- 0:53Speaker 3: Hi, Leggy, Good morning, fellas.
- 0:55Speaker 4: We're one day away from joint practice with the with
- 0:58Speaker 4: the Green Bay Packers. Is that the day that they'll
- 1:01Speaker 4: get the most out of this training camp? Is it
- 1:04Speaker 4: joint practice days?
- 1:05Speaker 3: I can wait and see. You know what our Green
- 1:08Speaker 3: Bay Packer writer ESPN, Rob Demoski told me yesterday that
- 1:13Speaker 3: Matt Lafleur gave this long list of things they weren't
- 1:15Speaker 3: gonna do in the joint practice. So I Oh really, Ill, Yeah,
- 1:21Speaker 3: I'm intrigued to know ei they're gonna unload all their
- 1:23Speaker 3: crap and practice for a day if there's all the
- 1:26Speaker 3: stuff they're not gonna do. But maybe he's exaggerating or
- 1:29Speaker 3: was just in a mood or something. But but I
- 1:32Speaker 3: think the uh, you know, the last last year, you know,
- 1:36Speaker 3: they had two days of joint practices, and I you know,
- 1:40Speaker 3: I get the sense that Sean Payton would sort of
- 1:42Speaker 3: prefer that to split it up a little bit, right,
- 1:46Speaker 3: Uh you know, I think he wanted to do at
- 1:48Speaker 3: least one of these, and this was probably the the
- 1:51Speaker 3: the best they could do. I think in the future
- 1:55Speaker 3: with the new massive new palace out here in a
- 1:58Speaker 3: couple of years, I think we'll see more more of
- 2:01Speaker 3: these locally here because they'll have they have all the
- 2:06Speaker 3: places now. But I think then they will really ramp
- 2:09Speaker 3: it up.
- 2:10Speaker 5: Did they purposely reduce it to one day just to
- 2:13Speaker 5: reduce the possible fights and all that stuff that goes on?
- 2:16Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I think the coaches have proven through
- 2:18Speaker 3: the years, if you want to prevent fights, you can
- 2:21Speaker 3: the coaches who make a point of it, you know,
- 2:25Speaker 3: and together both coaches have to be in on it.
- 2:28Speaker 3: But if they do it, they can prevent that stuff.
- 2:31Speaker 3: When that happens, it's because one or both of the
- 2:33Speaker 3: coaches are letting it go a little bit. You know.
- 2:36Speaker 3: It doesn't just spontaneously organically happen that way.
- 2:41Speaker 4: The coach at drud mail, what do you think about
- 2:45Speaker 4: his approach? He said, if we have a fight in
- 2:47Speaker 4: joint practice, if you're a starter, you're going to play
- 2:50Speaker 4: the whole preseason game. If you aren't, you aren't playing time.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Jeff. That shows you and tells you how lame preseason
- 3:00Speaker 1: football is the punishment for fighting his place. You have
- 3:03Speaker 1: to play well. I mean, it's just.
- 3:06Speaker 3: I like it that you're upset that it's lame, but
- 3:08Speaker 3: you won't watch ten minutes of it.
- 3:10Speaker 1: I watched the entire thing.
- 3:11Speaker 3: I'll watchep.
- 3:12Speaker 1: I like it.
- 3:13Speaker 3: I won't like it. I fell asleep.
- 3:15Speaker 1: I won't.
- 3:17Speaker 3: You were bored five minutes and you told somebody I'm bored.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Well, actually I left late in the fourth War to
- 3:23Speaker 1: go golfing with my wife. But it's funny. It's funny.
- 3:27Speaker 1: The punishment is you got to play football.
- 3:29Speaker 3: It used to be they were you know, when I
- 3:31Speaker 3: first started covering the league, they were actually looking for
- 3:34Speaker 3: the last ten roster spots in the preseason. That's not
- 3:38Speaker 3: the case anymore. I mean, the off season used to
- 3:41Speaker 3: be three days in June. That used to be the
- 3:43Speaker 3: off season program used to be three days and that
- 3:47Speaker 3: was it. So the preseason was finding players. I mean,
- 3:50Speaker 3: he said it to me yesterday when I asked him
- 3:53Speaker 3: a question about the roster. He he basically said he
- 3:56Speaker 3: could get to forty four, you know right now, just check.
- 4:01Speaker 1: So.
- 4:01Speaker 3: I mean they know where they're at. That's why it's
- 4:03Speaker 3: so and that, you know, the season's longer, and the
- 4:07Speaker 3: margin for air and games is a lot slimmer than
- 4:10Speaker 3: it used to be. I mean, there's tons more close
- 4:12Speaker 3: games than there used to be, and they're far more
- 4:16Speaker 3: petrified of somebody getting hurt than they are of not
- 4:20Speaker 3: finding that. One last developmental nugget, how much.
- 4:23Speaker 4: Of the starting twenty two in offensive defense? How many
- 4:26Speaker 4: positions do you think already have starters penciled in right now?
- 4:29Speaker 3: Probably most of them, I mean, probably more on offense
- 4:32Speaker 3: than defense. I mean that risk.
- 4:35Speaker 4: I think they know that right now.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Yeah, I think he knew it before camp started. But
- 4:38Speaker 3: that's just my personal opinion. You don't take Zach Wilson.
- 4:42Speaker 3: Now the rotation four days in, if you don't know
- 4:44Speaker 3: what the quarterbacks or you don't know who the quarterback
- 4:47Speaker 3: is going to be, I mean the ten thousand foot
- 4:50Speaker 3: objective view, he may have played better than anybody. And Indy,
- 4:53Speaker 3: you know, granted is against threes, but that ain't his fault.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Okay, now that you said that, of course read everything
- 5:00Speaker 1: you write, so you're well sorry to hear that, you're
- 5:02Speaker 1: but you're welcome. Uh But your little snippet there on
- 5:05Speaker 1: on the Broncos page where yesterday Sean Payton is praising
- 5:09Speaker 1: Zach Wilson got a good live arm hat. I thought
- 5:12Speaker 1: he had a good game. I'm encouraged. Fellows rips in
- 5:14Speaker 1: the game are really good. There's poise, He's been there,
- 5:16Speaker 1: done that. Is he coming around to Zach Wilson.
- 5:19Speaker 3: I mean he could didn't aimed to come around.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Most he likes.
- 5:23Speaker 3: He doesn't like him a little bit. He likes him.
- 5:25Speaker 1: That being said, we were going through yesterday with coach.
- 5:28Speaker 3: They're gonna find a way to keep him. I think.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Okay, well because because right now he could be the
- 5:32Speaker 1: backup on so many teams in this league, including the
- 5:35Speaker 1: damn San Francisco forty nine. Who's have got Brandon Allen
- 5:37Speaker 1: right now sort of? Or Josh Josh the Josh Dobbs
- 5:41Speaker 1: is there as there?
- 5:42Speaker 3: You know, I guess and you know, look he Zach
- 5:44Speaker 3: Wilson was overdrafted, Yes, like any quarterback it seems. But
- 5:49Speaker 3: should he been the second pick of the draft? No?
- 5:52Speaker 3: But the more I watch him, the more I think
- 5:55Speaker 3: it wasn't all his fault.
- 5:57Speaker 1: I don't want to Joe. I don't want to believe.
- 5:59Speaker 1: I don't want him to leave.
- 6:00Speaker 3: I think there's a lot there that they could cultivate
- 6:03Speaker 3: and look at. I mean, is he ready to be
- 6:05Speaker 3: a mistake free starter? And you know when you know,
- 6:08Speaker 3: I don't know the answer to that, but I do
- 6:10Speaker 3: know he has shown so much that they should keep
- 6:14Speaker 3: and take a look at in my opinion, So, uh
- 6:17Speaker 3: do I think he would get through waivers? As the
- 6:20Speaker 3: next question? Could they? And I don't think so because
- 6:23Speaker 3: I mean I've I personally have talked to multiple gms
- 6:27Speaker 3: of other teams who say, if it's a top ten pick,
- 6:31Speaker 3: it's almost an automatic claim unless a guy has showed
- 6:35Speaker 3: some kind of off the field mess or or injury.
- 6:38Speaker 5: Jeffrey, what is the most talent deficient position on this team.
- 6:42Speaker 3: I just think depth overall is you know, when he
- 6:45Speaker 3: talks about competition, a lot of that is because the
- 6:49Speaker 3: players are all at the same level, you know, that
- 6:53Speaker 3: are competing and.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Like at the other corner spot opposites or take.
- 6:57Speaker 3: I think I think they you know, I don't no
- 7:00Speaker 3: if Riley Moss is going to be the pick, but
- 7:02Speaker 3: I'm intrigued by his athleticism and side. I mean, that
- 7:05Speaker 3: would give them two of the biggest corners in the
- 7:07Speaker 3: league if if Riley Moss was the starter there, and
- 7:11Speaker 3: that's you want to fight. You know, all the size
- 7:14Speaker 3: and athleticism and all these three wide sets. You know,
- 7:18Speaker 3: that's what you need is you need big guys who
- 7:20Speaker 3: can really move. And but I just think depth, like
- 7:24Speaker 3: offensive line. The minute you know Quinn Bailey is not
- 7:27Speaker 3: going to be a guy we talk about a lot
- 7:29Speaker 3: on this show or any other show. But that injury
- 7:33Speaker 3: may cost them two other players because they got to
- 7:37Speaker 3: keep extra players in the offensive line just to cover
- 7:40Speaker 3: for the fact. Because he could play both guard spots,
- 7:44Speaker 3: he could play tackle, he could start games. He could
- 7:47Speaker 3: start games and get you by at four positions in
- 7:50Speaker 3: the offensive line. Oh yeah, and he was the extra
- 7:54Speaker 3: tight end in the in the run.
- 7:56Speaker 1: Look.
- 7:56Speaker 3: So I mean that's an awful lot of stuff for
- 7:59Speaker 3: a guy maybe we don't think about or talk about,
- 8:02Speaker 3: but that injury is gonna be significant when they cut
- 8:05Speaker 3: this team of fifty three.
- 8:06Speaker 4: That's a funny thing when you talk about depth, it's
- 8:08Speaker 4: like they want to find a way to keep Zach Wilson. Well,
- 8:10Speaker 4: that would mean you're keeping quarterbacks or.
- 8:12Speaker 3: You know, the running back. Everybody's telling me they got oh,
- 8:15Speaker 3: they got to keep all these running backs.
- 8:16Speaker 4: There's almost wide receiver. Yeah, And it's like you can't
- 8:20Speaker 4: stack depth on just one side of the football and
- 8:22Speaker 4: you're not.
- 8:22Speaker 3: Gonna You're not gonna have depth when you get rid
- 8:25Speaker 3: of coaches every two and three. I mean, Peyton Chom
- 8:27Speaker 3: Payton's only in his second year. He's still trying to
- 8:31Speaker 3: make this roster look like what he wants, just like
- 8:34Speaker 3: Big Fangio did. And you know, Hackett didn't even get
- 8:38Speaker 3: a shot, but they constructed that initial roster to what
- 8:42Speaker 3: he wanted. So, I mean, it's it's impossible. You know,
- 8:46Speaker 3: it's not a criticism really in a lot of ways
- 8:49Speaker 3: that they don't have depth, other than they can't make
- 8:51Speaker 3: their you know, their choices at head coach stick in
- 8:55Speaker 3: recent years.
- 8:56Speaker 4: Can I follow up on the wide receiver spot because
- 8:59Speaker 4: Troy frank Two part question Troy Franklin has he had
- 9:04Speaker 4: a disappointing camp? And then the second part is is
- 9:09Speaker 4: better than him as of right now?
- 9:11Speaker 1: Three more parts of the question.
- 9:12Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a lot of parts. You went to one part.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Okay, nice job. Do you want like some freaking hand tools?
- 9:22Speaker 3: Did Swedish directions disappointing?
- 9:24Speaker 1: Yes? Or no? Second?
- 9:27Speaker 3: I'm ready. I was ready for any and all questions.
- 9:29Speaker 3: So you're okay, Well, so what's your favorite color? Some
- 9:33Speaker 3: would say, U, you know, money now? Uh, you know,
- 9:38Speaker 3: I just I never say, or I try not to say.
- 9:43Speaker 3: You know, a rookie is disappointing after four weeks, but
- 9:46Speaker 3: you know, but I think his transition is exactly what Uh.
- 9:53Speaker 3: Some scouts had concerns about that unless you play in
- 9:57Speaker 3: the SEC and you're a wide receiver, you have basically
- 10:01Speaker 3: run free and caught passes in unencumbered glory and you
- 10:07Speaker 3: just run around in open space unless you've played in
- 10:10Speaker 3: the SEC and you can see that here's he's had
- 10:14Speaker 3: a difficult time when the defensive backs get physical with him,
- 10:18Speaker 3: he gets jostled off his route. Now, the timing's off
- 10:21Speaker 3: on a lot of things, and they have not thrown
- 10:25Speaker 3: a lot of passes in any drills. You know. I
- 10:28Speaker 3: know what social media says and all their quarterbacks are
- 10:32Speaker 3: amazing and all of that, but they haven't thrown a
- 10:36Speaker 3: three damn deep balls in any practice I've attended and mimes.
- 10:40Speaker 3: There's a reason we haven't had a lot of social
- 10:44Speaker 3: media confetti for Marvin Mims and Troy Franklin because they
- 10:48Speaker 3: haven't thrown any passes that the routes they're best at,
- 10:53Speaker 3: you know, vertical speed, you know they're not They're simply
- 10:57Speaker 3: not throwing those right now. Why, I think they're trying to,
- 11:01Speaker 3: you know, get bo Nicks as comfortable in the offense
- 11:06Speaker 3: as they can. And they've catered again personal opinion, They're
- 11:10Speaker 3: never gonna say yes, that's right, but I think they've
- 11:13Speaker 3: catered a lot of things to get bow Nicks as
- 11:17Speaker 3: comfortable to be the starter as possible, whether he won
- 11:20Speaker 3: the job or not. I just think that's how they
- 11:22Speaker 3: structured the whole thing.
- 11:23Speaker 5: Jeff Flag, well, why aren't you able to elicit the
- 11:25Speaker 5: same well thought out responses from Sean Payton that Kay
- 11:29Speaker 5: Adams can.
- 11:32Speaker 3: Well take a look.
- 11:34Speaker 1: That's a loaded question. That is an absolutely loaded question.
- 11:37Speaker 3: We have a lot more history of mister Peyton and I.
- 11:41Speaker 1: Do you really okay, did you hear what she said yesterday?
- 11:43Speaker 5: The reason I bring it up is Nellie, if you
- 11:45Speaker 5: don't mind relaying that interview, she was here in camp
- 11:48Speaker 5: yesterday and she didn't mess around. Right off the top
- 11:50Speaker 5: to me, right after the whole quarterback carousel, here's what
- 11:53Speaker 5: she had to ask him.
- 11:56Speaker 3: Well, if the jig is up, though, coach, it's like,
- 11:58Speaker 3: we know he's the guy, why not hands him the keys?
- 12:01Speaker 3: Like Chicago? What do you mean?
- 12:04Speaker 4: What are you you're to see what this next preseason
- 12:08Speaker 4: game is?
- 12:08Speaker 1: This next game would be important?
- 12:09Speaker 3: Why does you have to earn it?
- 12:10Speaker 4: What is the problem with just naming it?
- 12:12Speaker 3: Like what I do think it's important to the team
- 12:14Speaker 3: that they see.
- 12:16Speaker 1: In other words, I'm.
- 12:17Speaker 5: Not important to the team. And you said this two
- 12:20Speaker 5: weeks ago before. He would never name him exactly.
- 12:24Speaker 1: It's an entitlement thing.
- 12:26Speaker 3: I look, I've spoken to him about this process. He
- 12:30Speaker 3: would never Uh. What the Bears did would give Sean
- 12:34Speaker 3: Payton hives to to tell the rookie quarterback he is
- 12:38Speaker 3: the starter immediately and sit him out of the preseason opener.
- 12:43Speaker 3: This this, this head coach simply would not do that,
- 12:46Speaker 3: no matter. And it could have been rookie Peyton Manning
- 12:50Speaker 3: in here, could have been rookie Dan Marino, rookie John Elway.
- 12:53Speaker 3: It wouldn't have mattered. He would have handled it the same.
- 12:55Speaker 1: But you also said a couple of weeks ago, and
- 12:58Speaker 1: I think you were so running the money. Players know
- 13:01Speaker 1: you know, and and and he's got even if he
- 13:04Speaker 1: wants him, and he's gonna start him, and so on
- 13:05Speaker 1: and so forth.
- 13:06Speaker 3: If it's a tie, it's him. Yeah, close to a tie,
- 13:08Speaker 3: it's him right there.
- 13:09Speaker 1: There's got to be a certain aspect that the play
- 13:12Speaker 1: other players see of earning the position. So you're not
- 13:15Speaker 1: you're yeah, yeah exactly. So you got to get out
- 13:18Speaker 1: there and bust your hump. And and they're not dumb
- 13:21Speaker 1: inside that room. They know if it's a tie or
- 13:23Speaker 1: or it's closed, it's gonna be the kid.
- 13:25Speaker 3: They know the second play pats Er Tan ran as
- 13:27Speaker 3: a rookie, he was the starter.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Correct, I mean they correct.
- 13:30Speaker 3: They see talent, sees talent, then they know what it
- 13:34Speaker 3: looks like. But quarterback is a different animal in that
- 13:38Speaker 3: you've got to show them you can take it essentially
- 13:43Speaker 3: that you're gonna take the heat for the mistakes, even
- 13:45Speaker 3: if they weren't your mistakes. Yep, the greatest quarterbacks do that.
- 13:49Speaker 3: The bad ones don't. Uh, and just they they want
- 13:53Speaker 3: to see how you react to, you know, being in
- 13:56Speaker 3: the hub of the wheel as it were. And uh,
- 13:59Speaker 3: you know, the toughest thing for a coach is if
- 14:01Speaker 3: you picked the quarterback the locker room doesn't think one
- 14:05Speaker 3: the competition and I don't think they've had I think
- 14:09Speaker 3: Stidham has outplayed them objectively in a lot of training camp.
- 14:14Speaker 3: That the gap has certainly narrowed, you know, the last
- 14:18Speaker 3: week and a half or so as we get closer
- 14:20Speaker 3: to how things are going to look. But it hasn't
- 14:23Speaker 3: been a knockout. I mean, the other two guys would
- 14:25Speaker 3: have had to win by a knockout, and that that
- 14:28Speaker 3: it was pretty clear that, you know, bow Nicks was
- 14:31Speaker 3: good enough that that wasn't going to happen.
- 14:34Speaker 4: Jeff Legwold is brought to you by the International Brotherhood
- 14:37Speaker 4: of Electrical Workers ibe W Local sixty eight. Start with
- 14:41Speaker 4: a job and with a career, I could be.
- 14:43Speaker 3: There if this this thing doesn't work out here. But yeah,
- 14:45Speaker 3: you know.
- 14:46Speaker 4: You'd still cover camp though, even if you work there,
- 14:48Speaker 4: you'd come out here for camp.
- 14:49Speaker 3: You know, you take my personal time. Yeah, that's what
- 14:52Speaker 3: you're saying.
- 14:52Speaker 4: You want to sit around for another segment?
- 14:54Speaker 3: Sure, all right.
- 14:54Speaker 4: Jeff Lagwall continues with us Next Shakers Studios, Serious Lawyers
- 15:00Speaker 4: this series.
- 15:05Speaker 1: It's Don Loomis.
- 15:06Speaker 2: This is Teama Pac PhD coming up at.
- 15:08Speaker 4: Noon now to two Sports with Eli, Moser, Lombardy and Kane.
- 15:18Speaker 6: I think the Troy Franklin thing is the squirreliest decision
- 15:21Speaker 6: they got to make. I know they're stuck basically keeping them.
- 15:24Speaker 6: But if if this was a true meritocracy in terms
- 15:27Speaker 6: of who's earning it during camp, you'd be cutting Troy Franklin.
- 15:30Speaker 2: But but you guys know this as well as anybody else.
- 15:32Speaker 2: You're not wrong in that. You're definitely not wrong. But
- 15:35Speaker 2: when you build a roster, you build a roster full
- 15:37Speaker 2: of ready made guys and guys that you need in
- 15:40Speaker 2: the future. And he fits into the category of guys
- 15:42Speaker 2: that you need in the fun doesn Mims fit that too?
- 15:44Speaker 1: Then?
- 15:45Speaker 2: Mims to me, I chop City Mins.
- 15:49Speaker 1: A higher draft pick than he was. Yeah, just the
- 15:52Speaker 1: only second year with him.
- 15:53Speaker 6: I wouldn't I wouldn't shut it's here. Whatsoever you've got
- 15:55Speaker 6: rid of Marvin Mims. Wouldn't bother me, what whatsoever. I
- 15:59Speaker 6: do not think he's like one of the best capable guys.
- 16:01Speaker 6: And they've changed kickoffs and puns and I they got
- 16:04Speaker 6: guys that can do that job.
- 16:09Speaker 4: PhD yesterday as we're out here Broncos Park, powered by
- 16:12Speaker 4: Common Spirit, and all conversations with Jeff Lagwald are brought
- 16:16Speaker 4: to you by the International Pro Bowler.
- 16:19Speaker 3: I like that.
- 16:20Speaker 4: It's bold and brought to you by the International Brotherhood
- 16:24Speaker 4: of Electrical Workers. I b W Local sixty eight. Start
- 16:27Speaker 4: with a job and with a career.
- 16:28Speaker 3: Yet a team with no pro bowler should cut the
- 16:34Speaker 3: pro bowler.
- 16:35Speaker 1: I love it. What what day are you on with them?
- 16:38Speaker 3: I was on right after that. We think there was
- 16:40Speaker 3: good reasons they didn't tell me what they said. No,
- 16:45Speaker 3: I don't get the I don't get the cliff notes
- 16:47Speaker 3: as to what's gone down before I whe But I
- 16:51Speaker 3: just assume you've said some crazy crap before I come on.
- 16:55Speaker 1: There is I don't do dumb it would be credit.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Even if he didn't catch a ball, you're gonna cut
- 17:03Speaker 3: a Pro Bowl returner. Yeah, especially I guess that's that's
- 17:07Speaker 3: what had been My response to them was, even if
- 17:10Speaker 3: he doesn't catch a pass, you're gonna cut a Pro.
- 17:12Speaker 5: Bowl that you have such a dearth of any game
- 17:15Speaker 5: breaking ability on that team, I thought, would you take
- 17:17Speaker 5: the one guy who's a game break?
- 17:19Speaker 3: I think I believe, And again I don't have the
- 17:22Speaker 3: numbers right in front of me, but it's close to this.
- 17:24Speaker 3: I think they had seven plays last year forty seven
- 17:28Speaker 3: yards or longer, and he had four exactly so, and
- 17:31Speaker 3: it's not his fault that three of them were in
- 17:33Speaker 3: Week two. You know, he had three of those against Washington. Yes,
- 17:39Speaker 3: so you know the fact they don't they can't get
- 17:43Speaker 3: their act together to get the ball down the field
- 17:45Speaker 3: is not Marvin Mims's fault. But you know that that's
- 17:47Speaker 3: is how it goes in camp, you know, we I
- 17:51Speaker 3: think sometimes and look, I've fallen into the trap as well.
- 17:55Speaker 3: The part we all see isn't the only part of
- 17:59Speaker 3: the grade, you know, and it's just there's just more
- 18:02Speaker 3: to it to that, and uh, you don't take the
- 18:05Speaker 3: fifty three best guys to win Game one. You take
- 18:08Speaker 3: the fifty three best guys that will get you through
- 18:10Speaker 3: a season, and there's gonna be a developmental side of that.
- 18:15Speaker 3: And there isn't a good team in the league that
- 18:18Speaker 3: would just cut second round picks in their second year.
- 18:22Speaker 3: That's you either stink at drafting or stink at developing.
- 18:26Speaker 3: But that just shouldn't happen.
- 18:28Speaker 5: Is there a chance that the Denver Broncos can reunite
- 18:30Speaker 5: themselves with Justin Simmons?
- 18:33Speaker 3: You know, I guess I never say never with the Broncos, Vick,
- 18:36Speaker 3: You've been here long enough to know that, never say
- 18:39Speaker 3: never with the Broncos. Uh, there's an awful lot of
- 18:43Speaker 3: hard feelings, and I don't they don't.
- 18:44Speaker 1: Cut What are the hard feelings? What's the problem because
- 18:47Speaker 1: I made.
- 18:48Speaker 3: I think he thinks he played far better than they do,
- 18:52Speaker 3: and I agree with him, gotcha, But they they cut
- 18:56Speaker 3: him because they didn't think he played well enough. And
- 18:59Speaker 3: I guess I just don't buy them.
- 19:01Speaker 5: My theory is they're they're they're purging the locker room
- 19:05Speaker 5: of non peytent thinker.
- 19:06Speaker 3: Well, that's always the way with any coach, you know.
- 19:09Speaker 1: Well, the first to go was McMahon's Mike.
- 19:10Speaker 3: Mike did the same thing when Mike got here long ago,
- 19:14Speaker 3: and I just think that's common. But the difference here
- 19:18Speaker 3: is it's been done five times in the span of
- 19:20Speaker 3: a decade. So you're just not going to be able
- 19:23Speaker 3: to put any kind of consistent depth chart together for
- 19:26Speaker 3: a while.
- 19:28Speaker 1: You know.
- 19:28Speaker 4: On top of that, as far as the guys that
- 19:31Speaker 4: I think are really intriguing, Tim Patrick was a huge
- 19:34Speaker 4: part of this football team two years ago. He was
- 19:36Speaker 4: your most sure handed wide receiver. How has he looked
- 19:38Speaker 4: to you two years removed from injuries.
- 19:40Speaker 3: It's stinking amazing that he's even doing this. Yeah, and
- 19:46Speaker 3: he's doing it pretty well. The problem is, in some
- 19:49Speaker 3: years this wouldn't even been a discussion because it wasn't crowded.
- 19:53Speaker 3: But it's crowded yep now. And I you know, I
- 19:57Speaker 3: always if I'm a veteran player, just in my time
- 20:00Speaker 3: cover in the league, it's I'm always quizzical when they
- 20:04Speaker 3: invoke your name when they draft another guy. And the
- 20:07Speaker 3: first thing they said after they took Devon Vley and
- 20:10Speaker 3: the draft was he's just like Tim Patrick. So and
- 20:14Speaker 3: we can all go back and look at the transcripts,
- 20:16Speaker 3: but it was the first thing they said almost after
- 20:19Speaker 3: they picked him. So he's I have said, if if
- 20:23Speaker 3: I had to name three players on the Broncos who've
- 20:26Speaker 3: had the best camp, he'd be on the list.
- 20:28Speaker 1: Well, he's your age.
- 20:30Speaker 3: Yeah, that's why we get Hilong, we get along great.
- 20:33Speaker 4: Seriously, he is that why you dropped in the draft?
- 20:35Speaker 3: By the way, he's he's.
- 20:39Speaker 1: A twenty six year old rookie.
- 20:41Speaker 3: Yeah, he'll be twenty seven soon.
- 20:43Speaker 1: He Yeah.
- 20:43Speaker 3: I put the question of McGlinchey yesterday. Zach Allen is
- 20:48Speaker 3: twenty six. He's in a sixth year in the NFL. Man,
- 20:51Speaker 3: I think that's my.
- 20:52Speaker 5: Comparison because maybe the only team if Vle and Bonnick
- 20:55Speaker 5: were to start where starting.
- 20:57Speaker 1: Two rookies would up the age average agent.
- 21:00Speaker 3: Goes off from last last time.
- 21:02Speaker 4: The only quarterback wide out Cobbo with two kids in
- 21:05Speaker 4: high school. So wait, you said he's gonna turn twenty
- 21:08Speaker 4: seven soon.
- 21:08Speaker 3: I think he's turned during the season during.
- 21:12Speaker 1: Rookies with kids on a lot of times.
- 21:13Speaker 4: If two ricky rookies connected on a pass where their
- 21:15Speaker 4: combined ages fifty one.
- 21:17Speaker 3: Years old, that would be worth that.
- 21:18Speaker 1: That would be pretty amazing.
- 21:20Speaker 3: Yeah, it may have happened, you know, like in the
- 21:22Speaker 3: crazy War years or something. Yeah, yeah, when they had
- 21:25Speaker 3: thirty year olds running around.
- 21:26Speaker 1: So we've been into the preseason now just a little
- 21:28Speaker 1: tiny bit. I love reading the stories about the new
- 21:31Speaker 1: kickoff rules, right, and how teams were adapting and so
- 21:34Speaker 1: on and so forth. I want to get your opinion
- 21:36Speaker 1: on it. But but I'm reading the guy from Pittsburgh,
- 21:40Speaker 1: Danny Smith. He's like, everybody's just feeling their way through.
- 21:43Speaker 1: You don't want to show a lot because you don't
- 21:45Speaker 1: know a lot, right, Jim Harbig, He's like, I don't
- 21:48Speaker 1: know what we're going to do week one, you know,
- 21:50Speaker 1: against the Raiders. He said, I think to say we
- 21:53Speaker 1: haven't decided it is pretty darn accurate. Sean McVay, It
- 21:56Speaker 1: feels word I know, the aten is weird. The intendant
- 21:58Speaker 1: is there, will try to figure it out. That's where
- 22:00Speaker 1: we're at right now, right with this new rule that
- 22:02Speaker 1: everybody is just in a feel out stage. What are
- 22:06Speaker 1: we doing? You know? And it's I think everybody thinks
- 22:09Speaker 1: it's gonna look different as the season goes on. What
- 22:12Speaker 1: do you think?
- 22:13Speaker 3: I think this is the first time in a long
- 22:16Speaker 3: time for all coaches to believe they have a competitive
- 22:20Speaker 3: advantage right out of the game and something. So everyone's
- 22:23Speaker 3: holding back because they are gonna think their version of
- 22:27Speaker 3: it is a competitive advantage, including this team.
- 22:30Speaker 1: Where do they practice it like so we we.
- 22:33Speaker 3: Don't see it like that, but they're uh now, they
- 22:38Speaker 3: they may, you know, they've shown some glimpses of their
- 22:42Speaker 3: intentions here, but they do it in pieces, like they'll
- 22:45Speaker 3: do half field returns sometimes in special teams periods. If
- 22:49Speaker 3: you look closely, they'll start the coverage players all the
- 22:53Speaker 3: way down the field like they're already down there, and
- 22:56Speaker 3: they'll do it. But they do it in pieces, but
- 22:58Speaker 3: no one's really gonna show what they think is really
- 23:02Speaker 3: gonna work. The weird thing is is if at some point,
- 23:05Speaker 3: if you looked at it from the end zone, it's
- 23:07Speaker 3: gonna look like a running play. At some point, you
- 23:11Speaker 3: know you're gonna see I think some pin and pull
- 23:14Speaker 3: type stuff you're gonna see. I think even kickouts you're
- 23:18Speaker 3: gonna it's gonna look like a running play from behind
- 23:21Speaker 3: at some point.
- 23:22Speaker 1: I can't wait.
- 23:23Speaker 5: Where do you think a guy like Sean Payton, who's
- 23:25Speaker 5: been around the block, who's done this for many years,
- 23:29Speaker 5: where is he adapting and learning your wrinkles to his offense.
- 23:32Speaker 5: Is he going to the college ranks? Is he going
- 23:34Speaker 5: to other NFL teams?
- 23:36Speaker 3: Other defensive coordinators would say he's stayed more true, he
- 23:42Speaker 3: doesn't have as much pre snap motion as everybody else does.
- 23:46Speaker 3: Right now, that's the thing right now that everybody's.
- 23:51Speaker 1: Uh.
- 23:51Speaker 3: He still plays a full back more than a lot
- 23:53Speaker 3: of people. He and Kyle Shanahan, you know, he's sort
- 23:56Speaker 3: of of that ILK. I think in this camp he's
- 24:01Speaker 3: evolved a little bit in shotgun pistol. You can tell
- 24:06Speaker 3: he's thinking he might have a quarterback start who's comfortable
- 24:09Speaker 3: in those things. So they've done more with that that
- 24:12Speaker 3: you've also seen as you would expect, you know, be
- 24:16Speaker 3: like asking anybody to suddenly do something at the highest
- 24:20Speaker 3: level they've never been asked to do before. But when
- 24:22Speaker 3: bon Nicks is under center, he doesn't look nearly as
- 24:25Speaker 3: comfortable as he does. He funneled a snap and you know,
- 24:29Speaker 3: right it's happened plenty, and so he I think the
- 24:35Speaker 3: adaptation right now is that I think he is trying
- 24:38Speaker 3: to find a happy medium because he likes like Mike
- 24:43Speaker 3: Shanahan did long ago. He likes a quarterback under center
- 24:45Speaker 3: a lot because he thinks it helps.
- 24:48Speaker 4: How often do you see a tight end get carted
- 24:50Speaker 4: off the field and then be a practice like three
- 24:52Speaker 4: days later.
- 24:52Speaker 3: Karat Boles did that from a game one time, card out,
- 24:55Speaker 3: He got card out in the game, and he was
- 24:57Speaker 3: on the practice field the next the next time they this,
- 25:00Speaker 3: which I was stunned. But yeah, no, it's I think
- 25:02Speaker 3: sometimes it's I mean, we've all had not to the
- 25:06Speaker 3: degree of these guys sometimes, but you get that initial
- 25:09Speaker 3: oh my god, I think I broke.
- 25:10Speaker 4: Some What what do you feel about the tight end
- 25:13Speaker 4: room now as we're you know, they really need.
- 25:16Speaker 3: They need dulsage in the passing game, or it's just
- 25:19Speaker 3: gonna look a lot of the way it did last
- 25:21Speaker 3: year where they're trying to piece it together. But he's
- 25:24Speaker 3: he's the impact guy who can force the issue.
- 25:27Speaker 1: He's he looks the part.
- 25:29Speaker 3: Yeah, he's.
- 25:31Speaker 1: Yeah, he looks the part that he I guess coming
- 25:35Speaker 1: out of UCLA everything that I had hoped that he
- 25:37Speaker 1: would be. He looks like he's that guy. What what
- 25:41Speaker 1: is his ceiling?
- 25:41Speaker 3: Do you think? I think he could be a really
- 25:44Speaker 3: impactful player in the passing game. You know what however
- 25:47Speaker 3: many catches that is, I don't I don't know, but
- 25:50Speaker 3: they need guys who can finish. I mean, they just
- 25:52Speaker 3: donet They've not shown last year that they had Courtland
- 25:55Speaker 3: Sutton had ten touchdowns, but the next guy had four,
- 25:59Speaker 3: you know, and it was Annon Johnson. He might not
- 26:01Speaker 3: even make the team this time, and he was second
- 26:04Speaker 3: in touchdown catches.
- 26:05Speaker 4: VIC brought this up earlier. Is that's something you look
- 26:08Speaker 4: at the wide receiver room. It was apparent the first
- 26:10Speaker 4: day you look at the wide receiver standing next to
- 26:12Speaker 4: each other, everybody six that is that a red zone thing?
- 26:19Speaker 3: And it's it's I think he knows bo Nix's strengths
- 26:24Speaker 3: are between the numbers. I think defensive coordinators are going
- 26:28Speaker 3: to try and push him to make decisions out wide.
- 26:33Speaker 3: And we've we've had several passes we've seen that where
- 26:38Speaker 3: he can't quite drive it hard enough and that's probably
- 26:41Speaker 3: going the other way and in a game, but really
- 26:46Speaker 3: comfortable and on time and inaccurate in the middle of
- 26:49Speaker 3: the field, and you need size to do a lot
- 26:52Speaker 3: of that. It's kind of a post up situation in
- 26:55Speaker 3: the red zone. I think he came away. I mean
- 26:58Speaker 3: they were one of the worst teams in gold Go
- 27:00Speaker 3: which was inside the ten.
- 27:01Speaker 4: Yeah, they were.
- 27:02Speaker 3: Thirtieth in the league. And you know, I've often thought
- 27:08Speaker 3: between the twenties is the scheme, that's the genius world. Okay,
- 27:12Speaker 3: you scheme it up in there inside the twenty, that's
- 27:15Speaker 3: just your guy beating the other guy. Exactly right, because
- 27:18Speaker 3: Vic Fangio has sort of brought the return of I'm
- 27:21Speaker 3: just gonna clog it up enough so you can't do
- 27:24Speaker 3: what you want to do, and everyone has copied it.
- 27:26Speaker 5: And that's why Fanji was so effective against Kansas City
- 27:29Speaker 5: all those years because he's figured it out. Let them,
- 27:31Speaker 5: let them run.
- 27:32Speaker 3: Them up between the twenties, and if you can hold them,
- 27:37Speaker 3: the field goals and hope for the best.
- 27:38Speaker 4: You know. That's the weird thing about last year, as
- 27:41Speaker 4: we were talking about this earlier, and not that you
- 27:42Speaker 4: can pinpoint, you know, where a season ended to a
- 27:46Speaker 4: specific play, because there's a million things that happened during
- 27:48Speaker 4: the course of a season. But I remember in that
- 27:51Speaker 4: Patriots game is a huge game last year. I mean
- 27:53Speaker 4: that game was you lose that game, you're pretty much out.
- 27:56Speaker 4: You win, you got a decent shot of making the bosseason.
- 27:59Speaker 4: They get a turnover on that first drive on New England.
- 28:01Speaker 4: They start the drive I think was in the red zone,
- 28:03Speaker 4: didn't they and couldn't finish and only couldn't finish in
- 28:07Speaker 4: the end zone. It turned it over on downs. And
- 28:10Speaker 4: I just wonder how much of this offseason was all
- 28:12Speaker 4: about for Sean Payton if we get to that in
- 28:14Speaker 4: between the twenty eight we're finishing.
- 28:16Speaker 3: Look what he did. He up the size in the
- 28:19Speaker 3: receiver room and took a power back in the draft
- 28:22Speaker 3: who they he says, was at the top of their
- 28:25Speaker 3: board among the backs, among breaking tackles yards after contact.
- 28:31Speaker 3: You know, he obviously decided their red zone troubles were
- 28:35Speaker 3: because they couldn't They couldn't force the issue when they
- 28:39Speaker 3: wanted to, which takes either power or speed or both
- 28:43Speaker 3: in the NFL, and they didn't have enough of either.
- 28:45Speaker 1: Finally, from me before I let you go, thank god,
- 28:48Speaker 1: I I just saw the Patriots and the Falcons do
- 28:52Speaker 1: a trade. Right, Reddick is all up in arms to.
- 28:56Speaker 3: A guy who has said Judaan has said, I haven't
- 28:59Speaker 3: agreed to it.
- 29:01Speaker 1: It's it's crazy. And by the way, if you if
- 29:03Speaker 1: you agree to a deal, you pay the guy. I
- 29:04Speaker 1: have no idea what the Jets traded for Redick and
- 29:07Speaker 1: then they're sitting on their hands.
- 29:09Speaker 3: It seems to me that you should cover that issue before.
- 29:11Speaker 1: It's exactly what you're doing.
- 29:13Speaker 3: But I just it stress everybody's mad. They did that
- 29:16Speaker 3: here with Russell, right that they covered the issue with Russell.
- 29:19Speaker 3: But now suddenly it.
- 29:20Speaker 1: Just feels like pass rushers and whiteouts this year. I mean,
- 29:24Speaker 1: they've gone full Deva. They've just gone full give me,
- 29:26Speaker 1: give me.
- 29:28Speaker 3: Give me, you know, and I thought that I'm with
- 29:30Speaker 3: the players on this. Okay, give me a break. You know.
- 29:34Speaker 3: The Cowboys are like exhibit A of this.
- 29:36Speaker 1: But can they afford to pay c They can, but
- 29:39Speaker 1: they've got all this money.
- 29:40Speaker 3: I mean, tell me how smart you are, and then
- 29:42Speaker 3: you can't pull that off? Okay, fourteen or whatever it is.
- 29:48Speaker 3: If you can't do that, then.
- 29:49Speaker 1: You're okay, it's just the I mean they.
- 29:52Speaker 3: Should look, the players should get every dollar. They agreed,
- 29:56Speaker 3: you know, agreed, but it's just guess what when they're
- 29:58Speaker 3: you know, we we never ever bring it up. But
- 30:00Speaker 3: when they get Justin Simmons, did Justin Simmons have years
- 30:03Speaker 3: left on his contract?
- 30:05Speaker 1: Yep? Yes, what they do they caught him, but it
- 30:08Speaker 1: seems like nobody I mean, and this is why we're
- 30:10Speaker 1: seeing a holdout for money. Okay, nobody's but nobody's happy.
- 30:14Speaker 1: None of these guys. Like everybody's complaining at one point
- 30:17Speaker 1: or another. That's just what it feels like. Why do
- 30:18Speaker 1: you hate people that don't want money? Yeah, you want,
- 30:20Speaker 1: well I don't. I want money. I want to put
- 30:22Speaker 1: six D money, me me money, money, me me money.
- 30:26Speaker 1: That's our that's all.
- 30:27Speaker 3: I just it's always intrigued to me. The teams always say, well,
- 30:31Speaker 3: he's got a contract or we just can't possibly find
- 30:34Speaker 3: a way. You know, they just spent But the on
- 30:37Speaker 3: a buffet for the corporate sponsors.
- 30:40Speaker 1: The the Ioke thing doesn't bother you at all. If
- 30:43Speaker 1: I was a forty nine er fan, i'd be why.
- 30:45Speaker 3: Look, I always I just don't understand why we It's
- 30:49Speaker 3: the only thing in the world where we side with
- 30:52Speaker 3: the bosses all the time. In sports, we're like, oh,
- 30:56Speaker 3: he should just play and shut up.
- 30:59Speaker 1: I'm not saying that, but he's they've they've worked out
- 31:01Speaker 1: three different trades and here's one. Any of them just
- 31:04Speaker 1: do radio and shut up.
- 31:05Speaker 3: No, he just suck at Lobardi I mean, seriously, no,
- 31:10Speaker 3: I you know, if you're a fan, I get it.
- 31:12Speaker 3: You want the best team possible out there. I understand
- 31:16Speaker 3: the frustration. I just I guess I've spent enough time
- 31:19Speaker 3: around players to have felt the Uh, they're just gonna
- 31:23Speaker 3: get rid of you when they're done with you, and
- 31:25Speaker 3: you better take care of your take care of you?
- 31:29Speaker 4: Can I ask one question, then we'll let you go.
- 31:30Speaker 4: Last thing?
- 31:31Speaker 3: Is this another twelve part?
- 31:33Speaker 4: It's not.
- 31:33Speaker 3: I'm ready though.
- 31:36Speaker 4: Uh. Defensively, are they, from what you see now better
- 31:40Speaker 4: or worse last year or the same?
- 31:42Speaker 3: I think they can be better because they're better upfront.
- 31:44Speaker 3: The Franklin Myers for free, Yeah, I like him. Look
- 31:49Speaker 3: at that player you got for almost free.
- 31:52Speaker 4: So Malcolm Road, he's a beast in that run.
- 31:54Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean they've really now you know that said,
- 31:57Speaker 3: are they going to be as good at safety without
- 31:59Speaker 3: Justin and Kareem?
- 32:00Speaker 1: I don't.
- 32:01Speaker 3: I don't think so. But you know they'll be athletic
- 32:04Speaker 3: enough to make up for some other things too, so
- 32:08Speaker 3: they could close the gap there. And you know you
- 32:11Speaker 3: need somebody, you need a hundred tackle guy. Josie Jewel
- 32:14Speaker 3: was a hundred tackle guys, So you need a hundred
- 32:16Speaker 3: tackle guy in there somewhere.
- 32:17Speaker 1: Well, Singleton's a hundred tackle guy.
- 32:19Speaker 3: Well they both were hundred tackle guys last year, so
- 32:22Speaker 3: you need another one.
- 32:23Speaker 1: Mos Roach is a big man.
- 32:26Speaker 4: He's huge.
- 32:26Speaker 3: They're like a large human.
- 32:27Speaker 1: But I don't know the I gotta get his exact size.
- 32:31Speaker 1: But he's just he's as thick as he is tall.
- 32:33Speaker 1: I mean, he's gigantic.
- 32:35Speaker 3: But the you know, the FRANKL. Myers things changes everything
- 32:37Speaker 3: because everyone else can play where they're supposed to. Then
- 32:41Speaker 3: that's what That's what happened last year. That's why they
- 32:43Speaker 3: couldn't defend the run. You know, they had injuries, so
- 32:47Speaker 3: they had to move guys around and play them where
- 32:49Speaker 3: they're not at their best. You know, they got the
- 32:52Speaker 3: wrong guys getting double teamed. You know, now they can
- 32:56Speaker 3: they can set things up how they want it, and
- 32:59Speaker 3: one of their past rushers has to have sort of
- 33:01Speaker 3: a mini breakout, you know, most likely to be I think,
- 33:06Speaker 3: but Benito has the most natural explosiveness. I mean, he
- 33:12Speaker 3: was unbelievable. He was third in the league last year
- 33:15Speaker 3: in one of the one of your real analytics stats,
- 33:18Speaker 3: which is pressures percentage of pressures as the first rusher,
- 33:24Speaker 3: you know, the first guy there essentially, and he the
- 33:27Speaker 3: percentage of times he did that, he was number three
- 33:30Speaker 3: in the league. He just didn't have as many rushes
- 33:32Speaker 3: as a lot of the other guys. But uh, that's
- 33:36Speaker 3: they need somebody. They needed sort of a twelve sack
- 33:39Speaker 3: guy instead of you know, eight, eight and a half
- 33:41Speaker 3: or eight. They need a couple. They need a twelve
- 33:44Speaker 3: and a ten, you know somewhere in there to really
- 33:46Speaker 3: get it going.
- 33:47Speaker 4: Jeff Lakewell ESPN dot comy joy is every Thursday. Always
- 33:50Speaker 4: appreciate it, leg you thank you about him?
- 33:51Speaker 3: Is this the last one in the tenth? Is that
- 33:53Speaker 3: what we're saying, last one of the tenth?
- 33:55Speaker 4: That's right, we'll talk to you on the face next week.
- 33:57Speaker 1: Jeff, I'm bored.
- 33:59Speaker 3: You are bored. Uh, you're always bored, all right. You
- 34:03Speaker 3: know how many times people say I'm bored. After I'm
- 34:05Speaker 3: done talking, make a big list fit in the line.
- 34:10Speaker 5: You better ask for more money either.
- 34:12Speaker 1: Yeah, I wanted six hundred chees money me. You don't money.
- 34:16Speaker 3: You don't know anybody to get paid. What's the deal.
- 34:18Speaker 1: I want everybody to every free free bread for everybody.
- 34:24Speaker 3: Vick was done. Apparently Apparently he's a crophone scratch.
