Transcript
- 0:00Hey everybody, welcome back to another episode of the Shed
- 0:04Organics Show. Today's episode is a special
- 0:08one. I sometimes have these episodes
- 0:12where after recording I just feel like just really connected.
- 0:17My heart is full. I feel like the interaction is
- 0:22just so authentic and real that it just leaves me feeling so
- 0:30good after the conversation. And today was definitely one of
- 0:34those days. Today we have Joe from Henley's
- 0:38Rustics, and Joe's one of those people that screams
- 0:44authenticity. And, you know, we speak about it
- 0:47in today's conversation about being real, being somewhat raw
- 0:51and authentic. And I'm just so blown away and
- 0:56inspired by the things that Joe had to say because it really
- 1:00resonates. And I think it resonates with
- 1:02all of us at some deep level that we're almost all yearning
- 1:06for this type of message, this type of feeling and the
- 1:11struggles of life and trying to aim in the right direction.
- 1:15And I think that this conversation is an important one
- 1:19to showcase because it's helped me inspire me to be more of
- 1:25myself. And I'm going to be going away
- 1:27and thinking about how I can take some of the lessons that
- 1:29Joe shared into my own life and to take that into the content
- 1:34and things that I do. So I have absolutely no doubt
- 1:37that you'll really enjoy this conversation.
- 1:39Joe calls herself a rookie gardener, but it is not about
- 1:42that at all. She has a wealth of experience
- 1:45and a story that is really compelling.
- 1:47And I'm so excited for you to hear the conversation.
- 1:50So from Garden Beds, Gardening and beyond, here is the
- 1:54conversation with Joe from Henley's Rustics.
- 2:15Yeah, it's such a bizarre journey that it was never like a
- 2:20sit down moment thinking let's do a business.
- 2:24Like it just has happened. And I don't want to say I don't
- 2:29feel like I've had control over like us doing it, but I just
- 2:32feel like it's happened so naturally that I haven't really
- 2:36like forced anything or we've made decisions.
- 2:38It's all just kind of happened. It's just, it's so like, so
- 2:44basically my dad with from a farming family, mum and dad have
- 2:49the farm my whole life and a couple of years ago looking to
- 2:53sell it. And so dad still had a shed in
- 2:58town in Hungary that was for the trucks and he still had some
- 3:01gear. And so as he was exiting out of
- 3:04the farm, you know, he was looking to maybe drive.
- 3:07He bought a Mack truck and he was going to grain.
- 3:10He was going to cut grain. That was like his next kind of
- 3:13like semi retirement kind of Ave.
- 3:16Anyway. So there was a building in
- 3:18Ongarry that he wanted Tenderfold to pull down.
- 3:21It was actually an old warehouse.
- 3:23I think they sold like machinery and like hardware and like
- 3:29tools, all sorts of things. And my grandma used to work
- 3:31there when she was like 20 or something like that.
- 3:33Anyway, the building was falling down unsafe.
- 3:35Dad won the tender. He pulled down the building that
- 3:39had these beautiful bricks. It had corrugated iron.
- 3:42It had beautiful like, you know, the patent roof and everything
- 3:44that you have in the old buildings.
- 3:46So basically he was like selling the bits and pieces off people
- 3:51in the like locally, you know, sold the bricks and someone was
- 3:56building a house. He, he had the corrugated iron.
- 3:59But it would because it, when you pull corrugated iron off an
- 4:01old building, because it's like a soft metal from back like 80
- 4:06years old and older. It's like a it's, it's sturdy,
- 4:10but soft. And so when you pull it off,
- 4:12well, it gets quiet, you know, it's not your flat sheet.
- 4:15So one of his mates, Jason, he jumped on and I think it was off
- 4:20marketplace. He found an old water tank
- 4:22rolling machine. It's like you broke, put a shade
- 4:25of corrugated iron into it and you can just put it through like
- 4:29to go straight. Basically it gets it back out to
- 4:32a sheet. It still has its curves in it,
- 4:34but it makes it into like, you know, a straight sheet.
- 4:37So that was the idea is that he was just going to straighten
- 4:39these sheets ready to sell on like, you know, to, you know,
- 4:43pass on all the materials. Anyway.
- 4:45I, I think mum may have asked or he was playing around with like
- 4:50some garden beds. ID of like for her and came up
- 4:53with a couple of Oval ones and circle ones.
- 4:56And literally it just happened that the kids and I were
- 4:59visiting. I'm in Forbes, which is an hour
- 5:00and a half away and the kids and I were visiting and I'm like,
- 5:04these are really cool dad. Like it was just like that kind
- 5:07of conversation. These are really cool.
- 5:08Like I wonder if like if you put them on marketplace, like maybe
- 5:11you could sell them. So we put them on marketplace
- 5:14that night and yeah, it just like instantly, I think my,
- 5:20because I, we put it on in Forbes because I knew like, you
- 5:23know, they could deliver to the homes and Forbes.
- 5:25And yeah, I think the first few people like 5 minutes later were
- 5:28like 2 friends of mine in Forbes.
- 5:31They're like, we want garden beds.
- 5:32Yeah. Anyway, it just kept digging
- 5:34like, and then it just two years later, it just hasn't stopped
- 5:38digging. But like, I guess for the first
- 5:40year we're heavily relied, relied on marketplace and now,
- 5:46you know, because of the online gardening community, it's huge.
- 5:50So now I sell most of them through like Instagram or that
- 5:53leads them into the website where they can look.
- 5:55So yeah, it was just a moment of time where like dad was exiting
- 5:59out of farming and I was doing, I was kind of stepping down a
- 6:02little bit trying to find a more acquired a job because my kids,
- 6:09I was working at the same daycare my kids were in and it
- 6:12just got too much. I was like, either I leave or
- 6:14they leave. Like it was like they were
- 6:16crying for me and I was trying to work and I have done big
- 6:19roles, like big management roles in the past, but just wanting to
- 6:23focus on parenting basically. So it was like Dad exiting out
- 6:28of the farm, me wanting to quieten down and this like, you
- 6:31know, little selling on marketplace for a little while.
- 6:35And then I'm like, OK, well, we need a name.
- 6:37And I'm such an indecisive person.
- 6:39Like I overthink way too much. And literally Henley's Rustics
- 6:43was just like, I think the first thought thing I thought of.
- 6:45And then that was it. Boom.
- 6:47And then it was like, OK, well, we need some more sizes.
- 6:51And so we kind of worked out what would fit on a truck.
- 6:53And then yeah, OK, well, what towns are we going to deliver
- 6:57to? So we chose like from Ongarry,
- 6:59Griffith and Woga, they were close by.
- 7:03And then over the last two years we now delivered to 100 towns.
- 7:08Yeah. So it's just, it's just like we
- 7:10started small and done like, you know, I think like the first
- 7:14couple of loads, we had 20 garden beds on there and they
- 7:16were like, Oh my gosh, 20 garden beds.
- 7:19And now we have like, you know, sold out loads heading out most
- 7:22every couple of weekends, like, you know, with a full load of
- 7:25aiding garden, 80 garden beds going out to homes.
- 7:28So it's mind blowing. Yeah, mind blowing.
- 7:31So this like, yeah, so the I had the journey of Henley's rustics
- 7:34it. And I think that's what's so
- 7:37great about it is because we never had expectations of it and
- 7:40it never was a plan. And dad in seminary retirement
- 7:44and I'm just trying to find this crazier, not crazier lifestyle,
- 7:49but more not. So I've always been a workaholic
- 7:53and I'm, I'm just trying to step into a bit more of a balanced
- 7:57life. So yeah, like it's just unfolded
- 8:00naturally. I I don't, yeah, there's no,
- 8:03like if someone said like what's the secret to start up a
- 8:05business and for it to be successful, I wouldn't be able
- 8:09to give any advice because I was like, it just happened, you
- 8:11know? It sounds like this, this
- 8:13beautiful synergy of like timing because like the on one thing,
- 8:21like dad coming out of farming, right.
- 8:24You know, I'm about to go through the same process with my
- 8:25father when he eventually decides to retire.
- 8:28He's pass it on to me as well. But this workaholic just, you
- 8:33know, go hard at whatever you do and he spends a lot of hours on
- 8:37it. And then for that to just finish
- 8:39and have like kind of nothing. It's like you're sort of you
- 8:42really, you really need something for them to do and,
- 8:45and it's good for them to have something to do right.
- 8:47And it's kind of just worked perfectly in this little skill
- 8:51set for him to kind of make this.
- 8:53And then yourself again, I can relate to being a workaholic,
- 9:00having a billion ideas in my head at once.
- 9:03But being a mum in itself is such an important role, such a
- 9:06massive role and like being present for your kids and
- 9:12everything. I, you know, I noticed that you,
- 9:13you posted about that kind of recent birthday or something,
- 9:17just being more present with your kids and being around.
- 9:20And I think that's such a smart move to just like think about
- 9:26being around home or being more involved in their lives because
- 9:29parenting is such a massive thing.
- 9:31I mean, you were obviously involved in their lives, being
- 9:34with them in the daycare, but like that slower pace, being
- 9:38around the garden, the community, the family, it's,
- 9:41it's an underappreciated, powerful thing.
- 9:45So bringing all those together and then having that, like you
- 9:50said, there's no friction to it because I think that's when you
- 9:53know you're in the right spot. Like there isn't this crazy
- 9:57friction. And I think if there is
- 9:59friction, then you're probably pushing too hard or you're, you
- 10:02know, you're trying to make something square peg in a round
- 10:06hole type situation. So was there any kind of
- 10:13hiccups, hurdles that you faced initially sort of getting to
- 10:17that point? I'm even, I'm just even
- 10:20picturing your dad making 80 garden beds every weeks or
- 10:24something. That's crazy.
- 10:25But how does that, yeah. How's that evolved?
- 10:28Have there been any problems or anything?
- 10:30Yeah, I think, yeah, there was one point it was too busy.
- 10:37And so dad works seven days a week basically, whether he's in
- 10:41the workshop or he's out delivering and that's him
- 10:43anyway. Like even on a day off, you
- 10:46know, he'd wanna be doing something.
- 10:48Yeah, but there was a point where it was basically not
- 10:51humanly possible for him to make keep up with the demand.
- 10:54Cause all of a sudden, like, you know, sometimes people order 20
- 10:59garden beds and then you have all the other people ordering as
- 11:02well. And so now we have 2 workers
- 11:04with dad in the workshop. Cool.
- 11:06So we got Kerry and Katie and they, so they're in a couple of
- 11:10days a week helping dad. And I think that's more
- 11:12enjoyable for dad as well. Like I know when I go home and
- 11:14visit, like I hope he doesn't watch this, but you know, like
- 11:17they sometimes singing a song or like, you know, having a little
- 11:19joke and be like, it's nice that it's gotten to the point where
- 11:23he can have a couple of workers. And then it takes that, you
- 11:27know, he's not just like trying to pump them out.
- 11:30It's more of like a a bit more like, you know, they're working
- 11:34on a load and they know what's coming up.
- 11:35I don't know. I just, I feel, you know, like
- 11:38that's been really positive for him because, you know, being a
- 11:42farmer, often you do work on your own anyway, but I know it's
- 11:46good to have companies. So that was, and we, we
- 11:49actually, we've just come out of a really big two months and it
- 11:52felt like that again, like just too busy.
- 11:55Like I felt like, like it was busy.
- 11:59And I know mum and dad were out nearly delivering every weekend.
- 12:02Like it just was too busy. Like I'm trying to keep it like
- 12:06we don't want to go any more than we've set our region of
- 12:09delivery, which is like, you know, the river arena of NSW,
- 12:12central West Canberra. And that is manageable.
- 12:18And I think when we take we don't want to grow any bigger.
- 12:22We just want to, you know, serve like the local community and
- 12:25other states travelled to us to collect garden beds.
- 12:27So it's just trying to find that balance that we first set out
- 12:31like dad's exiting, you know, you know, into retirement
- 12:35eventually, like coming out of farming.
- 12:37And I'm meant to be having this balanced life I'm seeking and it
- 12:39will and it can. And because I have workaholic
- 12:43tendencies, it was getting that real business like, you know,
- 12:48really, you know, like pumping, trying to keep up with the
- 12:53demand. So yeah, I like, that's probably
- 12:56the biggest thing is like, OK, well, it's what do we want from
- 12:59this? It's like enjoyable.
- 13:00Like, you know, mum and dad are out delivering and hand
- 13:02delivering the the garden beds themselves and they really enjoy
- 13:05that. I know Mum loves that part of
- 13:06it. I love, you know, the garden
- 13:09community that I've created online and, you know, I'm a
- 13:12rookie gardener. So to share my learnings along
- 13:15the way, like to try and just make that all balanced is
- 13:21probably is something that's probably, yeah, not maybe not
- 13:26yet reached it. Just trying to like, you know,
- 13:27tune things and just gonna, you know, and that mom's quite good
- 13:31with that. She's, you know, she'll, she's
- 13:34got her own business where she does like hypnosis and Reiki and
- 13:38things. So for her, so dates for
- 13:41delivery kind of need to fit around her.
- 13:42So it's nice. Like she doesn't do a lot of it
- 13:45all the time, but it's nice just to have mum say, oh, that's a
- 13:48little bit too close to that or can't do that.
- 13:52Yeah. It's just, I think that will
- 13:53always be a bit of a part of it. And we ended up opening up a
- 13:56second workshop. We need more space.
- 13:59So as things have come up, yeah, we just dad like I'm as you can
- 14:05see when I talk like I'm like, wait, Dad's just like Dad's just
- 14:09like no worries. Yep.
- 14:12Good. You know, So he my busyness and
- 14:14he's calm. It's like Dad and I've never
- 14:16we've never clashed. Like there's never like I stay
- 14:20in my line. I run the business.
- 14:22And he doesn't know what he just probably thinks I'm fluffing
- 14:25around online with the gardening community not knowing.
- 14:27And I know I just, you know, he's making the garden, but it's
- 14:30like we just, you know, we're doing our own things, so we're
- 14:33not. And I mean, we're in separate
- 14:34towns. So it's all just worked.
- 14:38It's like, you know, to be a father and daughter team that
- 14:42maybe not everyone could do that because of like, you know,
- 14:45personalities and whatnot. So it's just, yeah, luckily
- 14:48enough as this was meant to be. I don't know.
- 14:52It's like this was like this. I've never even said this
- 14:54before. Like, is it our destiny?
- 14:57Like I feel like right now, like this is it feels like it's so
- 15:02natural. And I know that sounds bizarre
- 15:04to say, but like it it's all just happened.
- 15:07We plant like the seed was planted and it's grown into this
- 15:11without force. Yeah, yeah.
- 15:15So that's it, isn't it? It's that what it's like, like I
- 15:18said, the friction is not there. So it feels authentic.
- 15:21It feels like it was meant to be because it's the doors are just
- 15:26in sliding open. No dramas, you know, and like I
- 15:30can totally relate because I know, you know, when you say
- 15:33that it can kind of the growth of it can out outpace you a bit.
- 15:40It's exciting. It's like, oh, you know, we love
- 15:43doing this. Like we and then you get that
- 15:45connection with people. You they get to have a lovely
- 15:47garden bed and they you know, and they're sharing their
- 15:49journey and that becomes somewhat like addictive or it
- 15:54becomes this like real feel good thing and you want to keep
- 15:57serving that and you want to keep growing and the excitement
- 16:01is there, but it's like, hang on, I need to check myself like
- 16:06is this, are we going? Am I being taken too far One
- 16:09Direction or whatever? But I love how you said that
- 16:15your relationship father daughter is schmaker, because
- 16:19that was definitely one of my questions is like working with
- 16:23her. They say, you know, like don't
- 16:24go into business with family and things like this.
- 16:26But I actually think that if you have good, I mean, you know,
- 16:30you're naturally different people, which works quite well
- 16:33and you stay in your lane, as you said, but the but to
- 16:36naturally, like naturally people would just kind of both have
- 16:42ideas and they might come into it together.
- 16:44But I feel like family you should if you've got open
- 16:47communication, you can understand each other a little
- 16:49bit better. You can give each other a little
- 16:52bit more slack and some grace and, and that kind of thing and,
- 16:56and hopefully it, it brings you your family closer together.
- 16:59Maybe you've, you've obviously found that my my questions then
- 17:06like when now that you're having these thoughts about like
- 17:11balance and OK, we're kind of capping our area, we've worked
- 17:15out how busy we want to go and stuff like that.
- 17:17What do you see as like the next couple of steps?
- 17:20Like where do you feel like you want to go with it without going
- 17:24through your billion ideas like I would?
- 17:26Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, I think like for us, so we
- 17:30get to most towns every two months and I think we've just
- 17:33come out of the peak of spring. Everyone was wanting garden.
- 17:35But so for me, like I run the business and do all the admin
- 17:39and then obviously there's the online gardening community and I
- 17:44do, I basically I'm a rookie gardener, but I, I've always
- 17:48said like, I don't want to just sell garden in bed.
- 17:50I want to be the person that people can also come to say,
- 17:54here's your garden Med and here is some ideas.
- 17:57If you're new to gardening, this is how you can do it.
- 18:00And you know, I get Keith Edwards to come in, who's my
- 18:02like gardening idol. So we do like live videos.
- 18:05I've had other gardening gurus come in and I'm sharing my
- 18:10journey like that for me is important.
- 18:13And, you know, I think that's going well.
- 18:15Like I'm totally, yeah, I feel like for me it's just kind of
- 18:21establishing. I, I don't necessarily want to
- 18:23the next couple of years or next couple of steps is just
- 18:26basically doing what we're doing.
- 18:29I don't think anything really needs to change.
- 18:31We introduced our wiki embeds over a year ago.
- 18:36So we just had like, you know, the corrugated iron, you know,
- 18:39rolling that in the water tank into shapes and sizes that we
- 18:43do. And then now we've got a wiki
- 18:45embed option which has got a waterproof reservoir inside and
- 18:50it's like, you know, it's the garden, you know, what we can
- 18:52bet is like a waters itself, It's a self watering garden.
- 18:55So that's been a bit of a journey when you talked about
- 18:57challenges before, like for us to work out how do you get an 80
- 19:01year old shared the corrugated iron and to have a permanent
- 19:04inbuilt reservoir, what materials stick to what?
- 19:07And so we did have a bit of a journey during winter, some of
- 19:10the, the membrane, it wasn't curing properly during winter
- 19:17time. So we've had to change like
- 19:19methods a couple of times. And, you know, and every method,
- 19:24you know, my more involvement is a, is a water safe is a few
- 19:27graders. Like that's my like, I'd like,
- 19:29you know, just that checking like dad's, you know, he's got
- 19:31the scientist brain and he's developing it and doing all
- 19:35that. And for me, it's just like, make
- 19:36sure it's waterproof, food grade, everything we do.
- 19:39So, yeah, like that, like for us, that's the Wicken beds are
- 19:43probably becoming more popular. Yeah.
- 19:45So yeah, there's probably a bit more education around that.
- 19:48We could like, you know, to support people, understand that.
- 19:52I think people are learning about Wicken beds still for the
- 19:54first time. We only heard about it a year
- 19:56ago when just before we started making them because a customer
- 19:59was going to turn one of our garden beds into a Wicken bed.
- 20:01They asked, please don't put the brace in the middle because I'm
- 20:04going to turn into a Wicken bed. And we're like a what?
- 20:06Yeah. What's that?
- 20:07What are you doing? Yeah.
- 20:09And so anyway, we're since. Yeah, about a year we've been
- 20:11making them. So yeah, with Dad, I think I
- 20:17just want to try and slow it down maybe a little bit for him,
- 20:22for me, more, many bit more balanced management.
- 20:25I'm probably going to say balanced 100 times through this
- 20:28chat, but you know, for me to plan out loads so they're not so
- 20:33pushed for time. I don't know, maybe just fine
- 20:35tweak these balance, you know, for me, you know, I'm a sole
- 20:39parent. Like it's just me and the kids,
- 20:41like they don't. It's just, yeah, I wear all the
- 20:44hats. And so, you know, as things get
- 20:47as busy, if they what what it's been, I feel like I it's like
- 20:51the seesaw, the like the better the business is going more
- 20:54demanding. It's getting like I feel like,
- 20:56oh, I'm like I'm a bit more high strung and the kids aren't
- 21:00getting the gentleman they need. And then I feel like if I take a
- 21:04step like gentle parent and like do all the things, then, you
- 21:08know, I feel a bit like out of control with the business.
- 21:10Like I was not responding as quickly as I liked.
- 21:14It's like it's just trying to find the balance.
- 21:16So for me, next step with the business is just for us to
- 21:19really continue to enjoy it, but maybe find a bit more balance
- 21:24for us. So, yeah, I think we're I've the
- 21:27last two, yes. Like I've I have really worked
- 21:30really hard. Like, you know, you got to set
- 21:32everything up, you got to set up a website, you got to do this,
- 21:34you got to do this, you got to, you know, build a business.
- 21:38And now that we have it's, it's like.
- 21:41Yeah, yeah. Let's have these chats with
- 21:44Keith and other gurus. Let's help the people in the
- 21:47garden like Dad, like, you know, just give him because basically
- 21:51I take all the orders and then I say, Dad, this is your load On
- 21:55this date. It should just be a little bit
- 21:57more flowing like that. Like where I feel like, yeah,
- 22:00we've it's probably been a little bit like, yeah,
- 22:03sometimes. But I think that's my
- 22:05personality anyway. So I don't know how much like,
- 22:08you know, the shoulder drop. Yeah, that I'll get in life.
- 22:12I know it. Yeah, I know what you mean.
- 22:13That makes a lot of sense. The balance thing, like you
- 22:15said, is the most hard, hardest thing to achieve.
- 22:19Think like even just parenting on its own is just that.
- 22:21Like it's one of the hardest jobs, let alone having to do it
- 22:23on your own. And how many kids do you have?
- 22:27Sorry. So Ned's four and Frankie is 6.
- 22:30Awesome, awesome. That's so cool.
- 22:32Yeah. And look at it, I honestly
- 22:34think, and this is if like because I've become, I've been a
- 22:39workaholic and I've done big roles in everything.
- 22:41I was actually in Perth just before I came back to Hungary.
- 22:44I'd lived in like Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.
- 22:46And when we spoke earlier about the timing, like if dad had to
- 22:49retire a year earlier, I would have still been in Perth.
- 22:51Like Kenley's rustics would never have happened.
- 22:54Now, like I live in a country town.
- 22:58I'm a sole parent with no family in my town.
- 23:00It's like how what does my life look like?
- 23:02And I feel like we had, I do love our lifestyle.
- 23:08I love that we have, I'm looking at my, I can see my veggie patch
- 23:10right there in my front of the yard.
- 23:12Like we have this like homegrown lifestyle.
- 23:16And we, we have a nice little family.
- 23:20Like it's like you could have all the money in the world, but
- 23:25you, the rich people can grow vegetables and, you know, the
- 23:28middle class, like you can grow vegetables and like it's just
- 23:32we, I feel like I'm living our best life.
- 23:36I'm growing my own vegetables. I just picked out my own
- 23:38beetroot for lunch today. Like I'm not a material like
- 23:41stick person. I I'm all about like, you know,
- 23:44does your heart feel full? Does your, is your heart OK?
- 23:47And do you feel like well-being? And that's the patch like is
- 23:52basically what what's given that to the kids and myself.
- 23:56And I said of this the other day, I think on the post, like,
- 23:59you know, like grandma, you know, 80 years ago they had to
- 24:05grow their own vegetables, right?
- 24:06But this day and age, I have a supermarket 2 minutes down the
- 24:09road. I'm choosing to grow my own.
- 24:11I'm choosing to teach my children about vegetables.
- 24:14I'm choosing to to teach them about, you know, what's
- 24:17chemicals, What's we don't grow with chemicals like, but the
- 24:21supermarket like it's all these conversations.
- 24:24And for me, like, OK, well, I am a sole parent.
- 24:28I am living in a country town. I do need to live a simple life.
- 24:30How can we make that rich? Like for me, like, nature brings
- 24:34me calmness. The veggie patch brings us this
- 24:37lifestyle that is fulfilling. Like, and I, you know, I started
- 24:43learning to garden two years ago to grow vegetables because I
- 24:46didn't know how to. And I did not want to sell
- 24:49garden beds and not know how to garden and give advice.
- 24:54Like I, like, I wanted people to come, you know, to us.
- 24:57And it's just flipped it on it, like, on its head.
- 25:00Like, I'm like, I love it. Like, you know, like what's
- 25:05like. Yeah.
- 25:06Like it's like this gift that's coming to our life.
- 25:09Like, I love it and I love it for my kids.
- 25:11And I, you know, this balance that I'm seeking.
- 25:14I'm giving that to my kids now and trying to give him that
- 25:18skill. My, my daughter in particular
- 25:20was born with a busy brain like me.
- 25:21And like, it's a place we can slow down.
- 25:24And, you know, she asked the most curious questions about the
- 25:29garden and about what's this growing like, how's that
- 25:32growing? And then I love it, you know,
- 25:35like it's all so. Inspiring.
- 25:38I love and but you know, like, but I feel like I'm feeling it
- 25:42in my heart and my chest that we're doing like our business is
- 25:46providing this for families, the everyday person.
- 25:48Like like I said this the other day, like I don't want to just
- 25:51sell a dream. Like I want to show you how to
- 25:53get there. Like I'm leaving it like it's I
- 25:56picked my own B treat for lunch today, you know, like it's like
- 26:00and all the summer veggies are going.
- 26:01We're going to be in abundance soon.
- 26:02Like it's like anyone can do this.
- 26:06And I just love that our business is providing them like
- 26:11the tools that's like, you know, and then they bring it to life.
- 26:14Like yeah, I could go on for hours, but and I I listened to
- 26:19Keith Edwards chat with you. You, you had him on recently and
- 26:22he spoke about passion and a lot and it is you.
- 26:27It's being passionate about helping people, being
- 26:30passionate, you know, about being on the top of the mum I
- 26:33want to be. It's all about passion in life
- 26:35and you know, gardening in nature, you know, it's a lot of
- 26:39passion and you know, isn't it? It's just like.
- 26:42Oh. Totally different to life.
- 26:43I always think about like, I don't know what else it could
- 26:46be. Like, you know, it's about
- 26:48helping people, It's about connection, it's about
- 26:51community. It's all these things.
- 26:53And you don't need to be a billionaire for that.
- 26:54Like you can just have it in your backyard or in my case, in
- 26:57my front yard. So yeah, I could talk in
- 27:00circles. That's no.
- 27:01No, no, Joe, that's beautiful. Everything you said really
- 27:05strikes a chord in my heart too, because I feel like I feel like
- 27:10it's something that everybody sort of yearns for deep down.
- 27:14That community connection, that groundedness, that connection to
- 27:18land to where our food comes from, just like nature in
- 27:22general. Like we are nature.
- 27:23We're not separate from it. And that the richness that you
- 27:27speak about, that you're creating in your life that any
- 27:31kind of millionaire, billionaire, whatever just won't
- 27:34have in their huge empty modern mansion.
- 27:37Like I just too often, I don't know, this is much more
- 27:42appreciated in the gardening community that, that we're in.
- 27:45But you know, too often you see all of these curated lives and
- 27:49material lives that people will have on social media and all of
- 27:52this. And it's this image of success
- 27:54and, and, and wealth and all of this kind of thing.
- 27:57But it's realistically the life that you're creating where you
- 28:02like the joy that you get from seeing your child, reaping the
- 28:06benefits of picking something you've grown yourself and being
- 28:10curious about it, being happy, seeing them just putter around
- 28:13the garden. Like that kind of level of self
- 28:16satisfaction cannot be beaten. And the same thing that you're
- 28:20doing with your business that you mentioned creating this for
- 28:23other people, allowing them to step into that as well.
- 28:27Like, you know, I, I mean, I, I bring him up a lot because he's
- 28:30so important in my life with my, and my little boy is only 5
- 28:34months old and starting to really explore the world.
- 28:37And the amount of joy that that brings me over anything that I
- 28:42could possibly do is just immense.
- 28:44And like every single morning when the sun comes up and he
- 28:47wakes up at an ungodly hour, we're out there in the garden
- 28:51and I'm just watching his bright blue eyes stare around the
- 28:55garden and like, feel some of the leaves.
- 28:58And just like that kind of feeling and connection and that
- 29:02satisfaction I get from giving him those moments.
- 29:05Yeah, it's just something that is unmatched.
- 29:08So, but when you've got, yeah, I mean, like running a business
- 29:14and then having to do all the admin and like, you know, the
- 29:17finances and the tax, it's like it feels like we're split
- 29:20between these two. I just want to enjoy my garden.
- 29:23I don't want to have to worry about all this business.
- 29:25But then it's also facilitating this lifestyle that you're then
- 29:30able to provide and give you all of that value.
- 29:36So I genuinely really appreciate your authenticity and sharing
- 29:40that. I think it's so, so amazing.
- 29:43Hey, guys, really quickly jumping in.
- 29:45I just want to remind you, if you are not subscribed to this
- 29:48show, that is the number one thing that you can do to show me
- 29:51your support. So if you're finding value from
- 29:53this conversation and you're deeply engaged, I would love you
- 29:57to hit the follow or subscribe button.
- 29:59All right, back to the show. Can you can you talk to me about
- 30:02your journey then getting into the gardening community?
- 30:05So like you spoke about, you know, starting to share your
- 30:09journey and you call yourself a, a rookie gardener, but I think
- 30:13that you're going to be out of that quite soon.
- 30:16I think that you're not you're surpassing that title already.
- 30:22What's it been like for you connecting with people in the
- 30:24gardening community? What's the reception being like
- 30:27and how does that feel for you? Yeah, I, I think it initially
- 30:32when I started sharing my journey, it was just me and the
- 30:34kids in the garden, you know, and I would share our updates
- 30:39and you're at the start, we probably had like 20 followers
- 30:41and I still share the like the same, you know, today is what I
- 30:46did. Then it's just showing up.
- 30:48It's being real. So I think if you're being real,
- 30:53it attracts another. What do they say?
- 30:55It attracts your tribe like you're real, like you'll find
- 30:59your own community. And I think the people that
- 31:02would follow Henley's rustics, probably I, you know, your
- 31:07everyday gardener starting out or you know, looking for
- 31:11connection to gardening or you know, we do.
- 31:14We've got a whole range of rookies to experts.
- 31:18And I think I because I show up real, I don't know how to be any
- 31:21other way. It's attracted that that
- 31:26community. And you know, even I I do video
- 31:29tours in my garden and I had one I thought was paterie mildew.
- 31:34And then two people messaged me and said, I don't think that is
- 31:36Joe like I think just feel the leaf.
- 31:38And anyway, they said she sent me Karen and Kylie, these two
- 31:43ladies. One of them sent me this like
- 31:45post about how there's different shapes on leaves and I like
- 31:49there was no, oh, she's wrong. She's like, like it was just
- 31:54like, hey, did you like maybe I don't.
- 31:56It's just, there's no competition.
- 31:58Everyone's just trying to help each other out.
- 32:00Like it's just so like we all want the best for each other.
- 32:06And I, you know, if I say something like I'll mention it
- 32:10to them and then people message me from other states that are
- 32:13not even customers and ask me a question.
- 32:16And I love that. Like I'm not here just to serve
- 32:18our like customers. Like it's, it's a broader
- 32:22community. I like beautiful that there is a
- 32:24percentage of the people in the online gardening community that
- 32:27are our customers, but it's just everyone helping each other out.
- 32:30And I am and I will keep calling myself a rookie because the
- 32:33reason why I'll probably always be a rookie and I've listened to
- 32:36your podcast is that you've got a brilliant brain and know all
- 32:40the terminologies for these, what's going on in the earth and
- 32:44what's that you like all these like, you know, scientific
- 32:49names. I, my brain doesn't remember
- 32:50names like that. And I you know, I did a video of
- 32:53my patch when I call, you know, the little climbing arms, like
- 32:58and and then like in that the the hairy bits off the bottom of
- 33:03like I will always be I'm not going to be ever be like, you
- 33:06know, Keith Edwards or yourself that can rattle off all these
- 33:09things. I'll be very Sampit level
- 33:13terminology and I and I I I like being a rookie.
- 33:16Actually, I think it's in this space of making mistakes, which
- 33:21I just call learning. And you know, I think everyone
- 33:24is always learn. Even Keith Edwards said he's
- 33:26always learning and he said that in podcast.
- 33:30Yeah. So for my experience with the
- 33:32online community is just just beautiful, like such a beautiful
- 33:36community. And look, not everyone probably
- 33:40likes our page and then they probably don't follow and that's
- 33:43OK. I'm an over sharer.
- 33:46I am not polished. I yeah, like, and some people
- 33:52might be like, oh, what's this page?
- 33:54And they might go and follow a, you know, cottage, someone that
- 33:58that looks like Pinterest and everything.
- 34:00It's like, you know, like there's, I think there's space
- 34:03for everyone in this world and, you know, the gardening
- 34:06community in general. Yeah.
- 34:09Are just real people. Yeah, they definitely are.
- 34:12And but I think that that realness, that authenticity can
- 34:15be sniffed out a mile away by a follower like, you know, you're
- 34:20I've been guilty in the past of like trying to, I guess, you
- 34:28know, not necessary. I don't want to use the word
- 34:30fake it till you make it type thing, but just like pretend to
- 34:33be something that I'm not necessarily.
- 34:36And then moving into this gardening space, I've just kind
- 34:39of gone like this is what I love.
- 34:41This is my lane. And you know, so many people,
- 34:46even with content like turning the camera on yourself, I just
- 34:52have a thought. I switch it on and I say it and
- 34:55that one, usually that's one take and it's done.
- 34:58I can't have any more friction than that.
- 35:01Because if I'm thinking about what I have to say and curate
- 35:04something and and put it together, then that's just not
- 35:06me. And it people can figure that
- 35:09out. And like the other, they have
- 35:11what I would post and I was like, oh, this plant that, you
- 35:14know, this pigeon pee or something I said and it was the
- 35:17wrong name. Like I said the wrong name.
- 35:19I knew what it was, but I said the wrong name.
- 35:20And then I kind of had, unfortunately some people just
- 35:25going, oh, he's, you know, blah, blah, blah.
- 35:26They'll put like he doesn't know what he's talking about.
- 35:29But then the majority of people, like you say, are super
- 35:33receptive to being like, Hey, you know, we're all supporting
- 35:38each other. And yeah, like I, you know, I
- 35:45may know some of the, the sciency terms in my soil world.
- 35:49But at the end of the day, if you can produce a really good
- 35:52quality end result, it doesn't matter what you call it.
- 35:54It doesn't matter how it matters that you've got that beautiful
- 35:58result and you're enjoying the process in the meantime.
- 36:00And like, I totally can say I'm always learning and I'm a rookie
- 36:04at so many areas of gardening. I just have spent more hours
- 36:09studying one particular area than than others.
- 36:13So like that's where I feel like this particular, you know,
- 36:20conversations in this podcast for me, it's just the absolute
- 36:23best. I get to chat to so many
- 36:24different people, learn so many different because I can't live
- 36:28all of these lives and learn all of these experiences.
- 36:31This is where that community comes in, the passing down of
- 36:34generations, the sharing of stories and things where I can
- 36:37be like, oh, like I remembered so and so, like, for example, I
- 36:41remember Joe saying this about how she was growing this and
- 36:43then she realized it was that. And I cannot make that mistake
- 36:46too. And Keith said this, I'll add in
- 36:49your rock minerals or whatever. And it helps with this.
- 36:51And you just, I enjoy this so much, being able to chat to
- 36:56people and like, you know, I know that you're really enjoying
- 36:59it too, being able to go on live and starting to have that and
- 37:03just getting to pick people's brains with all the selfish
- 37:06questions that you have. Do you think that's something
- 37:10like that you might continue in terms of because I know you said
- 37:15like you, you want to be somebody that can walk the walk
- 37:19as well and help people in this kind of thing.
- 37:21But like, give it a few years, Joe.
- 37:25And I reckon you know what, even now, you're leaps and bounds
- 37:28ahead of somebody who's just starting out.
- 37:30So you don't necessarily have to be an expert or have to be
- 37:35somebody that's this big, you know, studied person.
- 37:38Like I have 0 documents to my name on gardening. 0.
- 37:44It's all being self-taught, looking up lectures, getting in
- 37:49the garden, learning from people.
- 37:53And some people have a problem with that because I don't have
- 37:55my, you know, dots and names things after my name or whatever
- 37:58it is. But then I don't necessarily see
- 38:02that as a marker for knowledge or wisdom, whatever it is.
- 38:07So do you see yourself becoming more of that person?
- 38:11Would you like to be something like more of that person that
- 38:14can help people on their journey?
- 38:16Yeah, well, I think I'm just doing it as it is anyway.
- 38:19Like for me two years ago when I first thought I know I better, I
- 38:23better learn how to garden. Like I went and put the garden
- 38:26bed and filled it up. It was a shady spot in my
- 38:28backyard. Did not even know about the
- 38:30rules about sun. And then, you know, and then I'm
- 38:33like, OK, we better go buy some vegetables.
- 38:35And so I went and bought a broccoli in February and put
- 38:39that in the garden. Yeah, because, you know, I
- 38:41didn't realise actually you don't need to start that till
- 38:45autumn broccoli. And so it bolted.
- 38:48Like there's so many things that you, there's some fundamentals
- 38:54to start out in gardening. And I basically did all the
- 38:56wrong things because I just was like, OK, I'm going to start the
- 38:58garden. I better learn quick, quick,
- 38:59quick. And so I did like so many issues
- 39:02at the start and then like with 0 because my, there's so much,
- 39:09you know, gardening is such a broad topic and what I do focus
- 39:15more on is vegetable growing. Like that's, you know, we sell
- 39:18garden beds and probably 80% of our customers to 90% will be
- 39:23growing vegetables in them. You know, some buy them just for
- 39:26flowers. So once I started making all
- 39:30these mistakes, you know, like somehow Keith Edwards fell fell
- 39:35into my life and we just started doing these videos and quite
- 39:39quickly I learned, you know, about positioning sun soil
- 39:44health is the most important aspect of it.
- 39:46If you can't get your soil health right, then your
- 39:49vegetables might be successful. If your vegetables aren't
- 39:52successful, there's probably something wrong with your soil
- 39:54health. Like, and then so for me it's
- 39:57like, OK, well then I better go and tell my customers this
- 40:01because it's like, well, because there's so many people that are
- 40:04seeing this dream life or they're wanting to get into, you
- 40:08know, growing veggies with their family.
- 40:10But that will like me, possibly naive, just had no idea.
- 40:16And so for me, like that cycle will always happen.
- 40:19You people will. You know, maybe because all of a
- 40:24sudden they bought their new house or they've gotten a bit
- 40:26older or their circumstance circumstances change or they've
- 40:29been really stressed in life looking for a well-being
- 40:31balanced lifestyle. There will always be like a new
- 40:35cycle of people coming into that brand new experience of growing
- 40:39vegetables. So when you said like, do I can
- 40:42imagine like what continuing or doing it further?
- 40:46I just think it's like for me, I love helping those beginners.
- 40:50I don't I feel like, OK, someone needed to be gardening.
- 40:55OK, where are you going to put your garden?
- 40:56But you need the sun. OK, let's focus on getting your
- 40:59soil right and then seasonal planting.
- 41:01Don't buy your broccoli in February.
- 41:04You know, like that in itself is such a lot of education and that
- 41:07can take a couple of years just on its own.
- 41:10Oh, yeah. And then, you know, then there's
- 41:12companion planning and then like, you know, you for me, I
- 41:16didn't, I've only just started looking at companion planning on
- 41:19my second year in like, yeah, second.
- 41:21Like I just feel like there's the fundamentals, like you had
- 41:25must haves and then there's some extra nice haves, you know, and
- 41:29then like pest control and, you know, there's all these things
- 41:33that I think for me, just supporting the beginners is so
- 41:39important. And I feel like I am
- 41:42experiencing it personally, myself and my kids.
- 41:45Like that's where I'm at. And so many of our customers are
- 41:49brand new and I want to be that support for them.
- 41:51And if you come to our page, hopefully you'll learn like I'll
- 41:57get the some information of how to get started at my keep my
- 42:01chat with Keith or my, you know, chat with other gurus that I've
- 42:04been doing. Like it's a go to place for a
- 42:06beginner. And I love that we also have
- 42:09experts in the community as well, you know, that actually
- 42:13comment on some things. And yeah, support as well.
- 42:18But I do really love helping the beginners because I'm a beginner
- 42:22and there's no point of me trying to teach an expert at
- 42:25anything because I already know like they're like, they're going
- 42:27to be looking for Keith Edwards directly or they're going to be
- 42:31looking for people that have been in the industry for 40
- 42:34years. Like there's people that like
- 42:37gurus go to go to them. Like don't come to me about an
- 42:41expert problem because I'll just ask Keith, you know what I mean?
- 42:44So I I feel like me, the only position I can really stand on
- 42:48and that I feel naturally OK with is like, have just heard
- 42:52this. Maybe you could try that.
- 42:55Or this is what I've done so far.
- 42:56It's working well for me. But you could check out this
- 42:59one. And there's so many different
- 43:00ways to get soil health. And I use Keith Edwards like his
- 43:04little formula of his combo, you know, with these like compost
- 43:08and his rock dust and his beerous soil worm casting.
- 43:10Like I use Keith's combo and it works well for me so that I tell
- 43:14people that's what I use. So, yeah, when you, I'm going
- 43:17around in circles, but you asked what would I do for the next
- 43:19couple of years as well, do that in, you know, six months time
- 43:23there'll be a couple of more 100 followers that will be brand
- 43:27new. And then, you know, next year
- 43:29there's Four Seasons in a year. Well, it's the same
- 43:31conversation. Next year.
- 43:32We're getting ready for spring planting, we're getting ready
- 43:34for summer plant. Like it's the same thing, but
- 43:36maybe next year I might know some extra tips or go, Hey,
- 43:41that's not powdering. You're due.
- 43:44I I remember, you know, like, did you feel the leaf?
- 43:47Like, you know, like that the conversations I've been having
- 43:50this year and the learnings will help me next year.
- 43:54Yeah, and the like, and the way you say it too, could just land
- 43:57with somebody differently, Just they might be ready to hear it
- 44:00at the right time. Or like the way you dissect
- 44:04something that you heard from Keith might like, you know,
- 44:07from, say, if I'm spitting words out or Keith is saying stuff
- 44:11that just doesn't make sense to someone who's beginning.
- 44:13And then you go, hey, like that basically just means this.
- 44:16And then they go like, cool. And they can go away and feel
- 44:20empowered to do that because the barrier to entry.
- 44:24It's getting easier to be able to get into gardening.
- 44:26It's getting more important to get into gardening and have a
- 44:28bit more food sovereignty. And helping the beginners means
- 44:34that there's less friction for them getting to a result,
- 44:37getting to that satisfaction of being able to grow their own
- 44:39food. And then ultimately taking the
- 44:42power back from these big food conglomerates to bring it back
- 44:46to the individual, the community, allowing them to make
- 44:51positive food choices about where it comes from, the types
- 44:55of treatment that is on it and all of these types of things.
- 44:58And ultimately that leads to like this.
- 45:01It's the ripple effect, you know, and I think I, I often
- 45:03think one person at a time. That's a lot of the motto that I
- 45:06keep saying to myself because I sometimes just want to scream
- 45:11out from the rooftops about certain things because I again,
- 45:15passion, that's where it comes from.
- 45:16I'm just like, everybody needs to know this because it's so
- 45:19important. But then I'm not in the
- 45:22convincing business. That's not what I'm trying to
- 45:24do. It's more like, let's just have
- 45:27these genuine conversations with people and when somebody is in
- 45:31the right situation at the right time, that one conversation with
- 45:35that one person might create something, plant that seed, and
- 45:39then it's the ripple effect. They then go and do the same
- 45:42thing for somebody else and then for someone else and it just
- 45:45emanates out from that. And I used to think we need to
- 45:52just get, you know, you need more people to just understand
- 45:55this concept. And it's like, well, I wasn't
- 45:59ready to understand that concept at one point in time.
- 46:02So how can I expect and force somebody else and, and any, any
- 46:06of that kind of when I'm too passionate or too screaming out
- 46:09too loud from the rooftops, then it makes people almost want to
- 46:14back away kind of they're just like, whoa, OK, like I'm not
- 46:17ready for this. So I really like.
- 46:20Coffee. Yeah, like.
- 46:21Yeah, yeah, It's like I, I really love that you're thinking
- 46:25about just going, hey, look, let's just make it simple for
- 46:29you guys to start to have a bit of this life that you want, that
- 46:34you want to create and just start just getting involved and
- 46:39feeling good. I can't even believe that they
- 46:41sold you broccoli seedlings in February, to be honest.
- 46:44Like they shouldn't. Even well that, well that's what
- 46:46like and that's what I say to our new rookie customers is that
- 46:51trying look at your seasonal guides because what is happening
- 46:56in your nurseries? Are they groaning like in
- 46:59controlled environments? And yeah, they do have broccoli
- 47:04already in February because they've grown it in a controlled
- 47:07environment and they're putting it in.
- 47:09Yeah. So there's no real rules of what
- 47:11they're going to put in the nurseries.
- 47:12You need to look yourself. Actually, I'm, and then I'm in
- 47:15Forbes NSW. Like we're still experiencing
- 47:19hot, hot weather until like April.
- 47:22Like, you know, it's it's like what you're doing and I'm doing
- 47:26is still can be world departed as well like you.
- 47:29So it's like you got to look at your seasonal guides for your
- 47:32area. Don't I don't just look at when
- 47:35Keith's planting things like he says, look out for your soil
- 47:39temperature. And I'm a structured bit more of
- 47:42a structured brain gardener. So I have a thermometer.
- 47:44I'm like, I checked the soil temperature.
- 47:47You know, I'm planting keys. My soil is ready to go.
- 47:50And you know, he's down in Victoria still waiting on times.
- 47:53I think, you know, and that's what I say, like there's,
- 47:57there's all these like things that can go wrong as a rookie
- 48:04garden. And so people go, I can't do it
- 48:06anymore. Like so, so like for me, it's
- 48:08just like, I repeat, like, you know, like I said, I'll be
- 48:12saying the same things next year because you repeat the things
- 48:14and then, like you said, it might land differently next to
- 48:16that conversation. People aren't ready for that
- 48:18yet. You know, I it can just someone
- 48:23said really nice. Actually, Glenn has sent me this
- 48:25feedback the other day. Just like thank you for all your
- 48:27tips, Joe And she I look up to her.
- 48:29She's a landscape designer. I said, Oh my gosh, thank you.
- 48:33I said, I hope it helps one person.
- 48:35She says, well, it helps me like, you know, like like you
- 48:38said before, it might just it's one person.
- 48:40I and I said I just want to help at least one person.
- 48:43If I've done a video, I think it's helped at least one person
- 48:47because it's landed at the right time for them.
- 48:50Worth doing, you know? Yeah.
- 48:53And I look, I don't go too much into pushing like what's
- 48:57happening in the big food industry.
- 48:59Like I more just like the lifestyle, homegrown lifestyle
- 49:05that you have. You can control what's in your
- 49:07food. I use no chemicals that
- 49:09everything's certified. Well, you know, you, you can't
- 49:12guarantee soil initially, but what I put onto them and you
- 49:15know, you can control that. It's fresh, healthy food
- 49:18straight from the patch to your plate basically.
- 49:21And I know my fights not to try and, you know, have those big
- 49:25conversations about all the things that are going wrong in
- 49:30the industry because I don't have the terminology for I don't
- 49:32have the expert insights that I just know the benefits of
- 49:36growing your own home veggies and your little boy that you go
- 49:39out first thing in the morning and he's like, that's that's
- 49:42where it all starts from, isn't it?
- 49:43It's letting my daughter pick the first tomato for the year.
- 49:46Like how huge is that? That's grown in our own garden.
- 49:50Like, you know, you go to the supermarket and there's hundreds
- 49:53of tomatoes, but we grew that one from a seed, Yeah, months
- 49:56and months ago. And now you get to eat the first
- 49:58one like that. It's not just the joy of
- 50:01growing, but like, it's like nothing's going to taste better
- 50:04than that chemical free growing in your own garden.
- 50:07Like it's. Yeah.
- 50:08Yeah, it's definitely the education around that.
- 50:11But like, it's, I think what what I'm getting from what you
- 50:14just said, it's like you're walking the walk of the life
- 50:19that you want to lead. And then basically, rather than
- 50:25convincing and telling people this is what we need to do,
- 50:28you're just showing people. Yeah, it's a way of life and you
- 50:30can choose it or not. It's like there's an alternative
- 50:33and this is about your health, of your family, but it's a
- 50:38lifestyle. Like I'm a high strung person
- 50:42with a very busy brain. I'm the most calmest in the
- 50:45patch. My kids are like in nature, like
- 50:48and I'm not just selling that. Like for me personally, like
- 50:52that has worked and I still am seeking balance.
- 50:56Like I'm not saying it's your miracle answer.
- 51:00Like you need to like like there's other things you need to
- 51:02do in life, go for a walk and all these things, but it's like
- 51:05a game changer. So yeah, I'm not I did a video
- 51:07about it. The other, I'm not just saying
- 51:09this will change a lot. Like it's I'm just showing you
- 51:13and then I'm sharing like a huge part of my pages.
- 51:16I like to show our customers progress and showing their patch
- 51:21what they're up to because we're all just everyday people and
- 51:25some might have two garden beds and some might have 10.
- 51:27Everyone's just doing their own little part for their family and
- 51:31for themselves. And I don't change the filter
- 51:36them and like, you know, add something to their photos.
- 51:39Like I love that they're everyday photos.
- 51:41Like don't try and make them. I mean, some of them are very
- 51:44beautiful photos that people send through.
- 51:46And I'm like, wow. But I just love like just your
- 51:49everyday photo or like to of your real patch.
- 51:52They're like, sorry about the weeds.
- 51:53I love the weeds because it's just like it shows realness.
- 51:57Like we don't have time to always pull out the weeds next
- 51:59to the garden. But it's like, I think it's just
- 52:02like not to show that it's this unreachable, you know, go that
- 52:08anyone can do it and it doesn't have to look fancy.
- 52:11It doesn't have to be like keeping up with the Joneses.
- 52:14There's not. It's just about what personally
- 52:17it benefits you and if you've got a family, how it benefits
- 52:20your family and your well-being. Like it's yeah, it's not, I'm
- 52:24not on here just to go, oh, look at my life like I'm doing it.
- 52:28Yes, to educate people how you can do it.
- 52:30But in the end, like where it's for my little family, like it's
- 52:34yeah in look, I won't go into like, you know, but personally,
- 52:41my being a solo parent and the kids are only having one parent
- 52:46that wears all their hats. It could be a very sad life and
- 52:50not my kids do struggle at times, but they our lives do
- 52:53feel full because I'm trying to add these little things into
- 52:56your into their lives. And anyway, I could go into a
- 53:00whole tangent about that. But yeah, bring me in with the
- 53:02next question. I just, no, I think you're doing
- 53:06a brilliant job at that because it's not, it's not perfect, but
- 53:10this curated life, this curated gardens, like, oh man, I see
- 53:16going through Brisbane sometimes on my travels and whatever, I
- 53:19see these just like perfectly manicured lawns and gardens and
- 53:25things. And it's just not a
- 53:26representation of real life or nature at all.
- 53:29And I think showing up, warts and all, weeds and all, is just
- 53:35like so much more real that when somebody sees it, they go,
- 53:39actually, it's OK to be like that.
- 53:43It's fine. That's actually a good thing
- 53:45that you've got certain different things popping up in
- 53:47your garden. It's not something to be scared
- 53:49of. And yeah, having having more
- 53:56people like yourself that and lead that life, promote that
- 53:59kind of thing is exactly what we need.
- 54:02So I'm just I'm, I'm a big supporter of you.
- 54:05I think you're. Amazing.
- 54:06Thanks, Jordan, That's so kind. And don't get me wrong, like the
- 54:09people that do have well manicured, manicured garden and
- 54:14like you know Colleen in orange like she's got the most
- 54:17beautiful gun. She's in that stage of her life.
- 54:19Like it's different people in stages of their life, different
- 54:22circumstances. I'm not saying.
- 54:23That's very true. I'm ruling out all the pretty
- 54:26gardens and saying like it's not real enough.
- 54:28I'm just saying like the everyday person, you know,
- 54:32that's what it is. You're just doing what you can.
- 54:34But I'm not ditching the gardens that do look beautiful and some
- 54:37of them are like a breathtaking and they're in the space that
- 54:39they can do that. And that's like, that's
- 54:42brilliant as well. I just think there's space for
- 54:44all of us. And there we have it, ladies and
- 55:03gentlemen. I told you you'd be so inspired.
- 55:05Joe is absolutely incredible. She's an amazing woman doing
- 55:09some incredible things, not only juggling being a mom, but also
- 55:13running a business, family business, being in a country
- 55:16town and battling all of the things life has to throw at us.
- 55:20So I'd really love you to go and check out Henley's rustics if
- 55:23you haven't come across them before.
- 55:24Go and say good day to Joe. Go and tell her that you enjoyed
- 55:28the episode. Share something, share a story
- 55:30of your own that resonated with you and connect with her because
- 55:35I think that's the one thing that we can do to help support
- 55:38her and what she's doing. If you found value from this,
- 55:41sharing this conversation around also helps.
- 55:43If you want to, you can also leave a review, some thoughtful
- 55:46comments on what you enjoyed and otherwise I'm so excited because
- 55:50we've got another amazing guest next week.
- 55:53I'm very thankful for your support.
- 55:55Can't wait to see you again soon.
- 55:57O thank you, take care and bye for now.
