Latest / HEAVY Music Interviews / Haunting Atmospherics With ANDREW CRAIGHAN From MY DYING BRIDE
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: My name is Andy. I play a guitar in a
- 0:02Speaker 1: band called My Dying Bride, which is an English doom
- 0:06Speaker 1: metal band for those that are unfamiliar with what we
- 0:08Speaker 1: were about. And we're about to come to Australia amongst
- 0:14Speaker 1: a few other places Japan and China very soon at
- 0:17Speaker 1: the sort of tenth around the tenth of September for
- 0:21Speaker 1: the first time in our thirty five year sort of
- 0:24Speaker 1: career or existence or whatever you want to call it.
- 0:26Speaker 1: So we're all really quite excited about that, and some
- 0:29Speaker 1: of us are still in shock at that it's finally happening,
- 0:32Speaker 1: and some of us are still shocked that it's happening
- 0:34Speaker 1: at all, but there we are. So yeah, it's interesting times.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Something's going on. Somebody said, thanks for joining us, man.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Might I Bright hit Astralia for the first time ever
- 0:47Speaker 2: this month for two special trids, personally the Metro in
- 0:49Speaker 2: Sydney on September sixteen, before hitting the North Kape Theater
- 0:53Speaker 2: in Melbourne the following night, like not far off right,
- 0:55Speaker 2: and you're packed and ready to go.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Oddly enough, I'm more packs then you might think, which
- 1:02Speaker 1: is surprising, and I'm not entirely show why that is.
- 1:05Speaker 1: I think I think it's mild panic attacks that because
- 1:09Speaker 1: we I mean, we've done decent distance if you will,
- 1:13Speaker 1: shows before, but nothing quite like this. I mean really
- 1:17Speaker 1: nothing that this will be very unique for everybody in
- 1:20Speaker 1: this band. No one's been quite this far away from
- 1:22Speaker 1: home and that kind of thing. So I'm not quite
- 1:26Speaker 1: fully packed to check. And if I was, I'd probably
- 1:28Speaker 1: unpack it and repack it to check like that. But no,
- 1:34Speaker 1: not completely, but closer than I'm a little bit more
- 1:37Speaker 1: prepared than I like to think. But it's just making
- 1:38Speaker 1: me nervous now thinking about it.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Check.
- 1:40Speaker 1: It means that much to us, you know, we're really
- 1:44Speaker 1: sort of I don't I don't know how I describe it.
- 1:49Speaker 1: I mean, we get excited in front of shows, and
- 1:50Speaker 1: nervous is that, but this is different. It feels very different.
- 1:53Speaker 1: We're really looking forward to these.
- 1:55Speaker 2: You sort of touched on this before, Bright, but it
- 1:57Speaker 2: is your first ever time company Ereia. So the big
- 1:59Speaker 2: quest as you needed, why or hell have you menationed
- 2:02Speaker 2: Collects for thirty five years?
- 2:07Speaker 1: I don't have a clear or a crystal clear answer
- 2:12Speaker 1: to that. But the closest I can come to any
- 2:15Speaker 1: semblance of truth is we all work for not well.
- 2:19Speaker 1: As I just mentioned a second ago, we all and
- 2:22Speaker 1: the rest of the band are no different. They all
- 2:23Speaker 1: have very serious jobs obviously we've got to keep hold
- 2:26Speaker 1: of and I can only assume that our mixture of
- 2:32Speaker 1: wanting to do shows but closer as always gotten the
- 2:35Speaker 1: way of risking, if you will, or committing to all
- 2:39Speaker 1: of these shows like we are doing now. And I
- 2:41Speaker 1: think what happened was we've had some bad news recently
- 2:44Speaker 1: and the band's a little bit turmoil, as most people
- 2:47Speaker 1: who know about us, we'll probably know, and we just decided,
- 2:50Speaker 1: you know what, let's just fucking do it. Let's put
- 2:54Speaker 1: all the other shows that we had penciled in on
- 2:58Speaker 1: the sidelines and those kinds of things with that upsetting anybody,
- 3:00Speaker 1: no cancelations and just do and concentrate. And we just
- 3:04Speaker 1: everybody just put the mind to we want to go
- 3:06Speaker 1: to Australia, we want to go to Japan. China just
- 3:09Speaker 1: fell in the mix, and career fell in the mix
- 3:10Speaker 1: as well, and it was just it was one of
- 3:14Speaker 1: those but why not, let's just, you know, we may
- 3:16Speaker 1: never get another chance, who knows, you know, And it's
- 3:20Speaker 1: not because we don't want to go and it's not
- 3:21Speaker 1: because there's no interest. It's just that we have to
- 3:23Speaker 1: balance that against our working lives as well. And I
- 3:26Speaker 1: can only think it's that because it's not the lack
- 3:28Speaker 1: of promoters with serious offers. Australia has always been, you know,
- 3:31Speaker 1: very professionally interested. Let's call it the same for Japan,
- 3:36Speaker 1: and I'm not so sure about China though that one
- 3:39Speaker 1: was a bit of a surprise. It's it's it's the
- 3:42Speaker 1: band's sort of a happy type for the risks to
- 3:45Speaker 1: come out there, because once we do these shows, that's
- 3:47Speaker 1: sort's finished, you know what I mean. That we're all
- 3:48Speaker 1: back to work and no one's going on holiday.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Ever.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Again, that's certainly not rock and roll, is it. You know, know,
- 3:56Speaker 1: you don't get may Croup saying that. I mean, you
- 4:04Speaker 1: know what I mean. We've you've kind of like we've
- 4:07Speaker 1: deliberately hobbled ourselves by playing music almost no one wants
- 4:11Speaker 1: to hear, and yet we love it and obviously there
- 4:14Speaker 1: is a crowd that loves it, and but it's only
- 4:16Speaker 1: in a very limited aspect of limited sort of numbers
- 4:20Speaker 1: and those kind of things. So we we kind of
- 4:23Speaker 1: asked for trouble and then got it. In the way
- 4:26Speaker 1: in the music which you use to play. But there
- 4:28Speaker 1: such is life.
- 4:30Speaker 2: There wouldn't be many places left in the road that
- 4:32Speaker 2: you guys haven't been. So when you tore a country
- 4:34Speaker 2: for the first time, like you are Australia, you talk
- 4:36Speaker 2: to people you either have been here before to find
- 4:38Speaker 2: out what to expect or do. You're rather going cold
- 4:40Speaker 2: and take it as it comes.
- 4:43Speaker 1: I've got a good friend actually who lives there, and
- 4:48Speaker 1: I've actually not He was my best friend for many
- 4:50Speaker 1: years when we were kids growing up listening to Anthrax
- 4:53Speaker 1: and Slayer, and he moved to Australia. He's flying across
- 4:55Speaker 1: to see us, and I haven't asked him anything. But
- 4:58Speaker 1: then I asked a good managerial friend who is actually
- 5:03Speaker 1: believe it or not, it's probably just about to finish
- 5:05Speaker 1: the a CDC tour in Europe as their tour manager,
- 5:09Speaker 1: and he lives really close to me, So I asked
- 5:11Speaker 1: him mainly, how do we get in first time? You
- 5:14Speaker 1: know how to make the visas go without causing any
- 5:16Speaker 1: bothering that kind of thing, and he just gave us
- 5:18Speaker 1: some tips on that. But the actual boots on the ground,
- 5:21Speaker 1: I haven't asked anybody anything. I never even thought to.
- 5:27Speaker 1: We've just been concentrated on making sure that we play
- 5:30Speaker 1: the set you know, correctly, and make sure that the
- 5:33Speaker 1: show is at least well, there's an element that's out
- 5:37Speaker 1: of our hands, but at least the music side is
- 5:38Speaker 1: going to be good. I never even thought about I
- 5:41Speaker 1: might ask someone what to do what I mean, some
- 5:43Speaker 1: interviewers have been given me top tips on what to eat,
- 5:46Speaker 1: but I'm not sure I trust any of those people.
- 5:48Speaker 1: I know they've all got yeah, but no. So we're
- 5:54Speaker 1: going in cold as it were.
- 5:56Speaker 2: And what are you actually expecting from Australian crowds? Light
- 5:59Speaker 2: Like we've got reputation for made a little bit crazy
- 6:01Speaker 2: over here.
- 6:02Speaker 1: You have, I'm expecting that actually, and we're hoping that
- 6:07Speaker 1: we can just hold it together to get the set done.
- 6:09Speaker 1: I mean whatever, I mean, We'll be happy with whatever
- 6:12Speaker 1: takes place. I mean, these two shows that we're doing
- 6:14Speaker 1: are very sort of up close and personal types club shows.
- 6:18Speaker 1: It's not like the festivals that we sometimes play in Europe,
- 6:21Speaker 1: where you know, the crowd's massive and the you know,
- 6:25Speaker 1: you're twenty feet away from everybody and forty feet up
- 6:28Speaker 1: in the air as well. Sometimes so we appreciate. It's
- 6:31Speaker 1: very much a club show, and we haven't done many
- 6:33Speaker 1: of them in the last few years, so for us,
- 6:36Speaker 1: it's it's going to be in It's almost like a
- 6:39Speaker 1: blast from the past, so we'll it'll be like going
- 6:42Speaker 1: back in time to when people were really keen and
- 6:44Speaker 1: really close at the same time. So it should it'll
- 6:47Speaker 1: be interesting. I reckon it's going to be good. It
- 6:51Speaker 1: should just be a good, good atmosphere and we're happy
- 6:54Speaker 1: to be there. If they're happy to be there, it'll
- 6:56Speaker 1: just be great.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Saying it's going to be your first thought me about
- 7:00Speaker 2: are you going to play songs from your whole career?
- 7:02Speaker 2: Are you just going to focus on your most recent album.
- 7:04Speaker 2: I'm all a binding.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Mainly older stuff. Probably up to Feel the Misery. I
- 7:10Speaker 1: think we bring back Field just the song that the
- 7:13Speaker 1: title song, Feel the Misery, and then just two off
- 7:15Speaker 1: the new album, which is the second of Three Bells
- 7:18Speaker 1: and the Apocalyptist, and they fit the set very well.
- 7:22Speaker 1: I mean, if, as I would imagine, some of your
- 7:27Speaker 1: crowd might be very drunk, they probably notice which two
- 7:31Speaker 1: they are, so that we might do a competition to
- 7:33Speaker 1: see where they were in the set. But yeah, no,
- 7:35Speaker 1: it's it's mainly also we appreciate. I mean I appreciate
- 7:39Speaker 1: because I'm like this, you know, if I want to
- 7:41Speaker 1: see someone, you want to hear the songs that you
- 7:44Speaker 1: know and love from when you were growing when the
- 7:46Speaker 1: scene was still forming and it was well I'm not
- 7:49Speaker 1: saying it's not important now, but it was certainly more
- 7:51Speaker 1: important back then. So we wouldn't just we're not then
- 7:56Speaker 1: necessarily to promote this new album. I mean, in fact,
- 7:59Speaker 1: that's probably the best way say this. We're not there
- 8:00Speaker 1: to promote this new album at all. We're there to
- 8:03Speaker 1: just play a show, and it just so happens that
- 8:06Speaker 1: we'll get We enjoy these two songs so much, we
- 8:08Speaker 1: want to play them, and we want to play them live.
- 8:12Speaker 1: But they could equally and and and just as quickly
- 8:16Speaker 1: be put aside and maybe your River from Turners could
- 8:19Speaker 1: be brought in and something from one of the others,
- 8:20Speaker 1: you know, because we've we've got plenty of music to
- 8:22Speaker 1: choose from. They're just good songs and they fit the set. Well. Yeah.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Nice. Now you've got to Miko Costa Maki from Say
- 8:29Speaker 2: the Sun guesting on vocals to the show, So tell
- 8:31Speaker 2: us more about him, and then why he was chosen.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Well, he he was chosen because we found ourselves vocalist less,
- 8:41Speaker 1: if there is such a word. Yeah, and we're allowed
- 8:47Speaker 1: to do that. We make and we have to admit
- 8:52Speaker 1: we didn't know quite how deeply Aaron's solo aspirations were.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Let let's politely put like that, which we which I
- 9:02Speaker 1: kind of understand. You know, people, you know, you get
- 9:04Speaker 1: to a certain age and you want to make things happen,
- 9:05Speaker 1: you want to make them happen quick, but obviously adding
- 9:08Speaker 1: an effect on us. We were left without vocalist and
- 9:13Speaker 1: we weren't ready for it. We weren't we didn't have
- 9:15Speaker 1: a plan. We didn't well mainly because we didn't know.
- 9:18Speaker 1: So we quickly sort of we found ourselves in disarray.
- 9:22Speaker 1: And I'll try to be brief, but we were. We
- 9:24Speaker 1: were sort of shocked at this. So once we'd got
- 9:27Speaker 1: over the shock and we realized we really didn't have
- 9:29Speaker 1: a vocalist. Is his new bands and he's putting another
- 9:32Speaker 1: It sounds like he's putting another band together as well.
- 9:34Speaker 1: To Enhuse's solo career. We had to find a vocalist
- 9:39Speaker 1: and we I think it was either Neil and Sean
- 9:43Speaker 1: or a combination of Neil, Dan and Sean who were
- 9:46Speaker 1: very fond Swallow the Sun, and they know Miko's history
- 9:50Speaker 1: because I think Swallowed us on a very early in
- 9:53Speaker 1: their early career were influenced by My Dane Bride. So
- 9:56Speaker 1: he kind of left us with well, so he knows us,
- 9:59Speaker 1: he knows what my Dame Bride is, he knows what
- 10:01Speaker 1: the ethosism, you know what it's about. He won't have
- 10:04Speaker 1: any delusions of grandeur because he knows where my dayn
- 10:06Speaker 1: bread come from and where we presently are. And then
- 10:09Speaker 1: the most important thing. We looked at his vocal range
- 10:12Speaker 1: and it's very his death metals different to the way
- 10:14Speaker 1: Aaron would sing it, but his vocal range is very
- 10:16Speaker 1: much what we needed. So we we'll try that guy first.
- 10:20Speaker 1: And he just said yes, And it was that simple,
- 10:23Speaker 1: It were really And then within a couple of weeks
- 10:24Speaker 1: of him saying yes, we flew him across to Halifax
- 10:28Speaker 1: and we and we had a meaning and a meeting
- 10:31Speaker 1: and we did some rehearsals and it was just easy.
- 10:34Speaker 1: It was really something. And despite he's got a very
- 10:39Speaker 1: dry sense of humor, of phenomenally dry sense of humor,
- 10:42Speaker 1: but He's very, very professional, to the point where we
- 10:46Speaker 1: were quite shocked. We were like, oh fucking hell, we're
- 10:47Speaker 1: gonna have to get professional now.
- 10:50Speaker 2: That wasn't the contract profession.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Looks like we weren't ready for any of that. So yeah,
- 10:56Speaker 1: we we all pulled the socks up a little bit
- 10:58Speaker 1: and just works and we went and we've just done
- 11:01Speaker 1: three shows. We did when it's back. He went in
- 11:04Speaker 1: hungry and won in Finland, his hometown, well not his hometown,
- 11:08Speaker 1: but it's home country, at least to a great success.
- 11:11Speaker 1: I mean, we had some equipment issues, but that nothing
- 11:14Speaker 1: musically or personality wise. We all got on. We had
- 11:19Speaker 1: a great time and despite the shock of you know,
- 11:23Speaker 1: people sort of the new Miko was singing and I'm
- 11:26Speaker 1: not sure what they expected, but when he walks out
- 11:29Speaker 1: on stage, they cheer.
- 11:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:32Speaker 1: The joke in the band is that you know that
- 11:34Speaker 1: I've been in this band for X amount of years
- 11:35Speaker 1: and they don't fucking cheer for me? Is it? So
- 11:41Speaker 1: it was we were all suddenly, it's like that is it?
- 11:45Speaker 1: So it's been great, I have to admit, but it was.
- 11:49Speaker 1: It was strange beginnings and we weren't really sure what
- 11:52Speaker 1: was going to come out, but it's it's been great.
- 11:53Speaker 1: So this is how we'll continue until we don't.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Cool very nice. Now, going back in history a bit, brother,
- 11:59Speaker 2: like you started My Dying Briding Bradford back in ninety ninety.
- 12:03Speaker 2: So what was the musical climate like back then they
- 12:05Speaker 2: gave birth to the band and where did you fit
- 12:07Speaker 2: in in the early days.
- 12:09Speaker 1: Well, we I actually mentioned in another email to one
- 12:13Speaker 1: of your compatriots that Bradford's a shittle and I actually
- 12:17Speaker 1: used that word and it was probably I mean, it's
- 12:20Speaker 1: not a great place, don't get me wrong, but even
- 12:22Speaker 1: then it's probably a little bit harsh because you can find,
- 12:25Speaker 1: you know what I mean, diamonds in the rough, let's say.
- 12:29Speaker 1: But back then in nineteen ninety or in nineteen eighty
- 12:32Speaker 1: eight eighty nine, when we were just coming into this scene,
- 12:35Speaker 1: Bradford was one of the few places in Britain that
- 12:38Speaker 1: got all of the American all of the European death
- 12:42Speaker 1: metal bands and then bands, so we were so dark.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Angel would come over and they'd play London Bradford and
- 12:48Speaker 1: somewhere in Scotland we'd get Nuclear Assault, Slayer, Anthrax, all
- 12:55Speaker 1: of that. We didn't miss a single thing, so Bradford
- 12:57Speaker 1: was like a hotbed and I lived and well we
- 13:00Speaker 1: all lived there so we didn't have to travel far.
- 13:02Speaker 1: The gigs were mainly in a place called the Queen's
- 13:04Speaker 1: All upstairs in the Queens Oaks. They had a smaller
- 13:07Speaker 1: venue downstairs too, and we'd get also, you know, we
- 13:09Speaker 1: had the bolt throzer when near Pandath carcass everybody and
- 13:13Speaker 1: we never missed anybody. It was just phenomenal entombed. When
- 13:16Speaker 1: they first came over, we saw them at Queen's Hall,
- 13:19Speaker 1: Me and Calvin, the original guitarist from years ago. We're
- 13:22Speaker 1: talking to them, you know, trying to get their plectrums
- 13:25Speaker 1: off them, which then turned out to be simple Jim
- 13:28Speaker 1: Dunlop one mill plectrums. They weren't even entombed once. You
- 13:32Speaker 1: know that we've got you know, but we were kids,
- 13:34Speaker 1: you know, we were we were just keen, like man alive.
- 13:36Speaker 1: It's entmbed, you know. We were just listening to the
- 13:38Speaker 1: left hand path and their side came, and then you
- 13:41Speaker 1: know that Sacred Right came, and then Morbid Angel came
- 13:44Speaker 1: and it's like we had parking everybody. So for us,
- 13:48Speaker 1: it was it was beautiful, it really was, and it
- 13:52Speaker 1: was easy because it was right on his doorstep. I
- 13:54Speaker 1: could walk to these venues from where I lived and
- 13:56Speaker 1: then walk home. So joining or starting an every metal band,
- 14:01Speaker 1: we were all. Everybody was at it, you know what
- 14:03Speaker 1: I mean. So there was loads of us. So for us,
- 14:05Speaker 1: the we were kind of I won't say spoil it.
- 14:08Speaker 1: It wasn't easy easy, but it was easier in retrospect
- 14:12Speaker 1: because we had places to play and we had people
- 14:15Speaker 1: to play too. So when we teamed up with like,
- 14:18Speaker 1: there was a band from London called Decomposed, we used
- 14:20Speaker 1: to play with them. There's a band I think that
- 14:22Speaker 1: from Wales called him Paler or something. We played with them,
- 14:25Speaker 1: and we played with Anathema, and we played with a
- 14:28Speaker 1: band called Malediction who are still going right now. And
- 14:30Speaker 1: we've played with all these you know, underground bands, and
- 14:32Speaker 1: some of us broke from some of us didn't. Paradise
- 14:35Speaker 1: Loss we've played with them a number of times, played
- 14:37Speaker 1: with Nate Palm Death and Caracas and Morbid Angel different
- 14:41Speaker 1: levels and Boltthrow. We've played with bolt Throw that we
- 14:43Speaker 1: loved both Throw in fact still do and memorialm So
- 14:48Speaker 1: there was nothing, you know what I mean. That's if
- 14:49Speaker 1: you listen to the list we had it. We were
- 14:52Speaker 1: on easy street back then, we really were, and today
- 14:55Speaker 1: those venues have all gone. Playing gigs in Bradford is
- 14:58Speaker 1: not quite the same. It's still has the essence. You
- 15:01Speaker 1: can you can sense the not the heartbeat as it had,
- 15:06Speaker 1: but the sort of people sense it had the heart
- 15:10Speaker 1: and the kind of reliving some of that sometimes. But
- 15:13Speaker 1: we back then, I have to admit it was. It
- 15:15Speaker 1: was well, I'm going it looks like it was easy
- 15:18Speaker 1: now when I've just spelled it out like that. But
- 15:20Speaker 1: the time, but it's certainly easier than what I would
- 15:23Speaker 1: imagine modern bands. If you were to start now, you
- 15:26Speaker 1: would you wouldn't have the same ride we had because we,
- 15:29Speaker 1: like I said, every metal band that came through European
- 15:33Speaker 1: or or otherwise, the Americans particularly all came and just
- 15:36Speaker 1: played at Queen's Hall and you could get him. It was.
- 15:40Speaker 1: It was just an amazing time. I mean really badly.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Missed what you've just said.
- 15:48Speaker 1: A great place, but this particular place, you know, it
- 15:53Speaker 1: was a top end of Bradford. I mean it was
- 15:54Speaker 1: actually all right, It's yeah, I mean I denigrated it
- 15:58Speaker 1: really badly and I felt a bit guilty about that.
- 16:00Speaker 1: I mean, I am literally from Bradford's I shouldn't really
- 16:02Speaker 1: have said that, so well, that's my apology. Then I'm
- 16:08Speaker 1: not saying it again.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Get One, You've gone on to be widely regarded as
- 16:17Speaker 2: pioneers of the metal. But what was your early vision
- 16:20Speaker 2: in regards to music and how it changed since?
- 16:25Speaker 1: I don't think that the vision's changed since. But originally,
- 16:30Speaker 1: the overriding feeling we had is when we we thought
- 16:36Speaker 1: or we've tried to be. And this is rather pompous.
- 16:39Speaker 1: I suppose we were big fans of Celtic Frost right
- 16:43Speaker 1: up until Cold Lake, and we've we've spoke to Tom
- 16:46Speaker 1: about that, We've had words with him about that record,
- 16:50Speaker 1: and we we love that eclectic sort of approach and
- 16:55Speaker 1: the absolute no holds bad. You know that we're going
- 16:58Speaker 1: to do something like this and when you going to
- 17:00Speaker 1: do something like this, and we liked that, but we
- 17:03Speaker 1: sort of thought we we can be better at that,
- 17:06Speaker 1: and we can be better. I mean, we weren't, and
- 17:07Speaker 1: we thought we were I call it confident naivete, which
- 17:12Speaker 1: we were full of back then when we were kids.
- 17:14Speaker 1: So we tried to be death metal, but with the
- 17:17Speaker 1: more polished and poetic and English attitude to it. You know,
- 17:21Speaker 1: we couldn't be deer sided, we didn't have their teeth,
- 17:24Speaker 1: and we could be morbidy angel and we weren't quite
- 17:26Speaker 1: like Carcass and we weren't as polished as Candle Mass,
- 17:30Speaker 1: but as a mixture of them all we could bring
- 17:33Speaker 1: our version of professionalism. We tried to be professional even
- 17:36Speaker 1: though we were stupid kids, but we tried and we've
- 17:39Speaker 1: always particularly after the Iron Maiden tour that we did,
- 17:42Speaker 1: when we watched how they operate, we really fine tuned,
- 17:46Speaker 1: as you know, because we were stupid kids up until
- 17:48Speaker 1: that point. And I think all we've tried to be
- 17:51Speaker 1: is not necessarily deliberately avant garde, because people can out
- 17:57Speaker 1: weird as now. You know, there's lots more bands playing
- 18:00Speaker 1: ange music than we did. But we always tried to
- 18:02Speaker 1: push the boundaries but still keep it in the realm
- 18:05Speaker 1: of heavy metal. It had to be some form of
- 18:08Speaker 1: well whatever it was, but says metal at the end,
- 18:10Speaker 1: it was never meant to be anything else, and I
- 18:13Speaker 1: think that stuck with us. We still tried that, but
- 18:16Speaker 1: the in the early days we didn't really and I'll
- 18:21Speaker 1: be honest with no one anticipated an ep no one
- 18:23Speaker 1: anticipated an album or two albums or three albums. No one.
- 18:27Speaker 1: There was no one in the band who was that
- 18:30Speaker 1: egotistical that we thought we'd get any of that done.
- 18:33Speaker 1: It was all brand new to us. Every single one
- 18:35Speaker 1: was an amazing trip. We thought, wow, you know what
- 18:37Speaker 1: on his third album, bloody Hell, no one thought that
- 18:40Speaker 1: was coming. And to be still doing it, I mean,
- 18:42Speaker 1: I'm going to feel it, but it still excites me
- 18:46Speaker 1: in the in the right way. But the ethosy seemed
- 18:50Speaker 1: to just try be It's almost like trying to be
- 18:54Speaker 1: rowdy and messy and clean and professional at the same time.
- 18:57Speaker 1: You know you've got this. The paradox is how you
- 19:00Speaker 1: and they do that's not possible.
- 19:01Speaker 2: Tell me when you figure it out.
- 19:02Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, no one's going to do it and
- 19:05Speaker 1: trying and give also this sort of eclectic, intelligent element
- 19:09Speaker 1: as well as if we're sort of British gentleman, which
- 19:12Speaker 1: if you actually saw is you know, we obviously on
- 19:15Speaker 1: stage we're focused and professional, but if you met as
- 19:20Speaker 1: it's kind of you know, we're just regular. We can
- 19:23Speaker 1: probably sense that from me now, we're just regular guys
- 19:25Speaker 1: and girls. You know, there's nothing over the pretentious about us,
- 19:30Speaker 1: But the music when that starts, that changes something inside us,
- 19:34Speaker 1: and we've become slightly different while it's playing, and then
- 19:36Speaker 1: you know, back to normal when it stops.
- 19:39Speaker 2: Perfect and speaking about albums, like you released your fifteenth
- 19:42Speaker 2: studio album, Mortal Binding last year, So how the reception
- 19:46Speaker 2: for that? Like I know at the time before it
- 19:47Speaker 2: came out, people were saying it was your best way yet.
- 19:50Speaker 2: But how was the reception? Did that translate?
- 19:54Speaker 1: It has? I mean, like I said that I touched
- 19:56Speaker 1: on early with with Aaron, sort of a solo aspirations
- 20:00Speaker 1: I like to call them, to be polite about the
- 20:03Speaker 1: sort of decision making process. It's had an effect. But musically,
- 20:09Speaker 1: when you sit down and people actually scrutinize it or
- 20:13Speaker 1: if they review it, no one's complaining about it. In fact,
- 20:16Speaker 1: most people are saying it's the strongest album we've done
- 20:18Speaker 1: for some time, even better than Ghost of a Ryan,
- 20:21Speaker 1: which was relative. Most people thought that was a pretty
- 20:24Speaker 1: strong record. This one musically, but I think the discord
- 20:30Speaker 1: that's sort of surrounding it at the moment has kind
- 20:32Speaker 1: of soured it a little bit. But overall, from a
- 20:34Speaker 1: musical point of view, I don't think anybody's I mean,
- 20:38Speaker 1: if they get into My dying brade that people are
- 20:40Speaker 1: really sort of catching on to this and it is
- 20:42Speaker 1: picking up again. People are saying nice things about it
- 20:44Speaker 1: now because it's weird how something utterly and completely unrelated
- 20:50Speaker 1: to the actual music can have an effect on people's
- 20:52Speaker 1: perception of it. We've watched it, but it's beginning to
- 20:55Speaker 1: fade and people are liking the album again in a
- 20:57Speaker 1: strange way. Anything, Well, it was always the same album, even.
- 20:59Speaker 2: Though is it it's frustrating to people and outside factors
- 21:04Speaker 2: come into what is essentially a separate body of work
- 21:09Speaker 2: it is.
- 21:09Speaker 1: I mean, I mean, it's kind of understandable, but it's
- 21:12Speaker 1: a weird sort of a when when we've realized what
- 21:16Speaker 1: was taking place. So I was speaking to the record label,
- 21:18Speaker 1: one of the guys down there, and they were pointing
- 21:21Speaker 1: out these things. Everythink, that's that's weird. That's a weird
- 21:23Speaker 1: sort of No one would expect that as because we're
- 21:27Speaker 1: kind of weird animals. We're very emotional, even if we
- 21:29Speaker 1: try to pretend we're cool all the time. All of
- 21:31Speaker 1: us are affected by something and these the turmoil, if
- 21:35Speaker 1: you want to call it affected retrospectively, people's opinion of
- 21:40Speaker 1: music they previously enjoyed worked out and they could see,
- 21:44Speaker 1: you know, in reactions and that kind of thing of
- 21:45Speaker 1: these little poles that they do. Anythink, wow, I would
- 21:47Speaker 1: never have thought that, But and then you think, yeah,
- 21:49Speaker 1: it kind of makes sense. But the things people are
- 21:53Speaker 1: sort of dusting off the turmoil and getting back to
- 21:55Speaker 1: the core of why they like Nighty and Bride the music.
- 21:59Speaker 1: You know, we're not anything much more than just a
- 22:02Speaker 1: man that tries to be and tries to play honest music.
- 22:06Speaker 2: Yeah, and I can't do anything else. Bro fifteen albums,
- 22:09Speaker 2: Man like fifteen albums. There's a lot of albums and
- 22:12Speaker 2: a hell of a lot of music, right as in
- 22:14Speaker 2: many addition, do you think it gas if you're all
- 22:16Speaker 2: harder to come up with fresh shirting material?
- 22:17Speaker 1: The more you're right, Oddly enough, I think it gets easier.
- 22:23Speaker 1: But there's an element of you've got to be very
- 22:26Speaker 1: careful or in my opinion, my my sort of experience
- 22:31Speaker 1: of it, not to repeat. That's the that's the hard part,
- 22:34Speaker 1: not repeating what you've done. Because obviously I like what
- 22:39Speaker 1: I like and most you can hear it, you know,
- 22:41Speaker 1: you can hear it on the albums. That's me that
- 22:42Speaker 1: you know what I mean, and you're getting mostly what
- 22:46Speaker 1: I like to hear. You know, I'm not really playing
- 22:49Speaker 1: it for anybody else. I'm doing it because I like
- 22:51Speaker 1: it and thankfully some of the people who are joining in.
- 22:55Speaker 1: So but after a while, the key is you go
- 22:57Speaker 1: back and play something it's like, famly, I fucking recognize
- 23:00Speaker 1: that and it's us, you know, and you've got to
- 23:02Speaker 1: really think, now, well, we can't do that again. We
- 23:04Speaker 1: need to rethink that. That's the hard part. The ideas
- 23:08Speaker 1: keep flowing, but you I am I repeating myself now,
- 23:11Speaker 1: you know. That's the tricky part. That the writing, the
- 23:16Speaker 1: actual I find it's really easy and I've got so
- 23:20Speaker 1: many ideas and so many different things to keep going
- 23:22Speaker 1: and ideas to push when we when we start writing again. Well,
- 23:25Speaker 1: in fact, we've started writing again, but we were having
- 23:27Speaker 1: a break at the moment while we're just the shows.
- 23:31Speaker 1: So I'd say overall, the trickiest part is ensuring it
- 23:36Speaker 1: stays relatively fresh, but also not so obviously MDB, that
- 23:43Speaker 1: it's stuff you've you're not regurgitating stuff that you've already done.
- 23:46Speaker 1: That's the hard part. I mean, let's face it, the
- 23:49Speaker 1: world's not bereft of misery to take inspiration from us.
- 23:53Speaker 2: Just got to go.
- 23:57Speaker 1: You don't have to go far for any kind of
- 23:58Speaker 1: real inspiration, you know, just wake up, that'll do.
- 24:04Speaker 2: We mentioned earlier that you going to be playing shows
- 24:06Speaker 2: in Sydney and Melbourne. Now you know, Australia is a
- 24:08Speaker 2: big place made, so there's going to be a lot
- 24:10Speaker 2: of people having to come from inter state to what
- 24:11Speaker 2: you play. But just say, someone's still sitting on the
- 24:14Speaker 2: fence about paying for that airfare and getting that hotel room,
- 24:17Speaker 2: like why should they travel to see you?
- 24:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't have an answer for that, because I'm
- 24:23Speaker 1: not really a salesman, I mean, and the people promoting
- 24:25Speaker 1: this are probably kicking themselves saying, who's this club? Can't
- 24:27Speaker 1: we get someone else? I would if I was on
- 24:31Speaker 1: the fence, and all right, because I appreciate finances are
- 24:35Speaker 1: probably i mean the tough for everybody, and I get that.
- 24:38Speaker 1: So but there's a good chance this might be I mean,
- 24:44Speaker 1: I walk into my esoteric if we meet in Australia,
- 24:47Speaker 1: I'll tell you what I was about to say at
- 24:49Speaker 1: this point, But I reckon, well, there's probably a chance
- 24:54Speaker 1: we might not ever make it back. I'm not saying
- 24:56Speaker 1: the world's going to crack it up and we're just space.
- 24:58Speaker 1: But it took thirty five years just to get this far.
- 25:01Speaker 1: H So I would I would edge my bets if
- 25:04Speaker 1: if I was one of those guys on the face
- 25:06Speaker 1: and thing, well, what are the chances of MDB coming again?
- 25:09Speaker 1: It's slim, right, let's just say it's slim. So you know,
- 25:12Speaker 1: I better make a movie here. But I can't. I
- 25:15Speaker 1: can't convince anybody. I was like, oh, if you come
- 25:18Speaker 1: and see us, it's gonna be the best thing. You know,
- 25:20Speaker 1: don't go see Beyond, say instead, come and see us.
- 25:22Speaker 1: It's well, yeah, you go see Beyonce. Of course it's
- 25:33Speaker 1: one of those showing you know, relatively, Oh you know,
- 25:37Speaker 1: we go see them, you know what I mean. Like
- 25:39Speaker 1: and because that that Bradford thing I mentioned earlier, when
- 25:41Speaker 1: it was easy for us to see people, that those
- 25:44Speaker 1: days have gone. We have to travel now. Yeah, I
- 25:47Speaker 1: appreciate it. And if you're into this kind of thing
- 25:50Speaker 1: and you want to just say I was there, I
- 25:52Speaker 1: definitely saw them. They came to Australia and you know,
- 25:53Speaker 1: I was one of those guys supporting them during that
- 25:56Speaker 1: this is it, this is probably it. But on the
- 25:58Speaker 1: flip side, there is an element of once it's been
- 26:02Speaker 1: done once it makes it easy to do it again.
- 26:05Speaker 1: But I don't know when that might be. That's the
- 26:07Speaker 1: that's the gamble, you know what I mean?
- 26:10Speaker 2: Such a crappy answer. It you just you covered every
- 26:12Speaker 2: side of the fence there, You did well.
- 26:15Speaker 1: I managed to stay on the fence as well. You know,
- 26:17Speaker 1: I didn't commit to any side of You.
- 26:18Speaker 2: Know you are a salesman. Thanks for your time. Andrew
- 26:23Speaker 2: has been absolutely pleasure speaking about Sure I die Brady
- 26:26Speaker 2: here September sixteen, seventeen, Sydney and Melbourne. Only Andrew's not
- 26:31Speaker 2: going to tell you to get a flight, but I'm
- 26:32Speaker 2: going to tell you to get a flight. Be fucking awesome.
- 26:36Speaker 1: Well, thank you very much. I'm sure they'll be really
- 26:38Speaker 1: I am looking forward to these. I'm sure they're going
- 26:40Speaker 1: to be great.
- 27:00Speaker 2: Yeah,
