- 0:12Hello friends, shown here it is Thursday.
- 0:16It is the 16th of May. Thank you for inviting me into
- 0:21your day. As we get closer to the end of
- 0:23the week and we continue in our journey reading through the Book
- 0:27of Proverbs are Proverbs. What a fascinating book, right?
- 0:31And there are all these controversies.
- 0:33You know that the more you learn about something, the more
- 0:35controversial it becomes. What you what you just assumed
- 0:38was simple, is never simple. And the assumption is that,
- 0:42yeah, these were written by King Solomon as he was ruling, but
- 0:46the more that they have learned, the more that they are starting
- 0:50to realise with consensus, is that these were likely written
- 0:54during the exile, or after the exile in Babylon, which is a
- 0:58long time after Solomon. Because as they've looked at
- 1:02these, they have seen parallels between Proverbs and other
- 1:07wisdom writings of the ancient Near East.
- 1:10And it's very likely that as they were exiled in Babylon that
- 1:14the Israelites heard this other literature and they thought, no,
- 1:18these are the teachings of our people.
- 1:20And so they captured their wisdom, their wisdom handed down
- 1:25from the wisest man in their National History, and they've
- 1:30captured their version. Which doesn't talk about the
- 1:33correct way to live to gain prosperity, but it talks about
- 1:37the best way to live in wisdom, in submission to the Lord though
- 1:44it is putting a very God centric slant on the idea of wisdom.
- 1:51And so here we are able to take note of this incredible writing
- 1:56which brings such richness and tradition and shares it all in
- 2:01the light of us as people of the living God.
- 2:05How awesome is that? So today, gather around with me
- 2:10like little children sitting on the knee of our Father as he
- 2:14will teach us more about trusting in God and finding
- 2:20wisdom as we read together. Proverbs Chapter 3
- 2:35My child, Never forget the things I've taught you.
- 2:38Store my commands in your heart. If you do this, you will live
- 2:42many years and your life will be satisfying.
- 2:46Never let loyalty and kindness leave you.
- 2:49Tie them around your neck as a reminder.
- 2:52Write them deep within your heart.
- 2:54Then you will find favour with both God and people, and you
- 2:58will earn a good reputation. Trust in the Lord with all your
- 3:03heart. Do not depend on your own
- 3:06understanding. Seek His will in all you do and
- 3:10He will show you which path to take.
- 3:14Don't be impressed with your own wisdom.
- 3:16Instead, fear the Lord and turn away from evil.
- 3:20Then you will have healing for your body and strength for your
- 3:23bones onto the load, with your wealth and with the best part of
- 3:28everything you produce. Then He will fill your barns
- 3:32with grain, and your vats will overflow with good wine.
- 3:37But child, don't reject the Lord's discipline, and don't be
- 3:40upset when He corrects you, For the Lord corrects those He
- 3:44loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom He delights.
- 3:49Joyful is the person who finds wisdom, the one who gains
- 3:52understanding, For wisdom is more profitable than silver, and
- 3:57her wages are better than gold. Wisdom is more precious than
- 4:02rubies. Nothing you desire can compare
- 4:04with her. She offers you long life in her
- 4:07right hand and riches and honour in her left.
- 4:12She will guide you down delightful paths.
- 4:15All her ways are satisfying. Wisdom is a tree of life to
- 4:20those who embrace her. Happy are those who hold her
- 4:23tightly. By wisdom the Lord founded the
- 4:27earth. By understanding He created the
- 4:30heavens. By His knowledge the deep
- 4:33fountains of the earth burst forth, and the Jew settles
- 4:38beneath the night sky. My child, don't lose sight of
- 4:42common sense and discernment. Hang on to them, for they will
- 4:46refresh your soul. They are like jewels and a
- 4:50necklace. They keep you safe on your way,
- 4:53and your feet will not stumble. You can go to bed without fear.
- 4:57You will lie down and sleep soundly.
- 5:00You need not be afraid of sudden disaster or the destruction that
- 5:04comes upon the wicked, for the Lord is your security.
- 5:09He will keep your foot from being caught in a trap.
- 5:13Do not withhold good from those who deserve it when it's in your
- 5:17power to help them. If you can help your neighbour
- 5:19now, don't say come back tomorrow and then I'll help you.
- 5:24Don't plot harm against your neighbour.
- 5:27For those who live nearby, trust you.
- 5:29Don't pick a fight without reason when no one has done you
- 5:33harm. Don't envy violent people or
- 5:36copy their ways. Such wicked people are
- 5:39detestable to the Lord, but he offers his friendship to the
- 5:44godly. The Lord curses the House of the
- 5:47wicked, but he blesses the home of the upright.
- 5:51The Lord mocks the mockers, but is gracious to the humble.
- 5:55The wise inherit honour, but fools are put to shame,
- 6:11Lord, in this proverb you tell us to trust in you with our
- 6:17whole heart, and not to have backup plans, and not to depend
- 6:22on ourselves, and not to have things in the wings ready to
- 6:25swoop in if plan A fails because you just don't fail.
- 6:31That's so hard for us to wrap our head around, Lord, because
- 6:34everything else can fail from time to time.
- 6:40So Lord, give us the boldness, give us the faith to be able to
- 6:46just commit ourselves 100% wholeness.
- 6:50Bolus to you go all out in our faith, knowing that you will
- 6:58never let us down, that we can depend on you entirely, and that
- 7:05you bless us with abilities that we can use and wisdom that we
- 7:08can live by. But ultimately that it is you
- 7:11who will empower us. And it's you that we can lean
- 7:15back into Holy Spirit, strip our hearts of those defences that we
- 7:23build up to protect us, just in case you fail.
- 7:27Because we just don't need them. Strip us clean so that we can
- 7:33fall deep into your embrace. Ah, we love you and we pray.
- 7:39All this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
