- 0:47convention. Here is bonus material.
- 0:51If you watching here and you see my hat, you know we're in
- 0:53Denver. So you know, I learned from
- 0:56coach Crime that I ain't hard to find.
- 0:58So I had to go get the hat since I was coming here to Colorado.
- 1:02All right, we're back up ready for the next one here.
- 1:04Why don't you introduce yourself and speak up with all the the
- 1:06loudness here? I'm Shane Brookshire from
- 1:09Frostburg State University. Shane, it's kind of a odd
- 1:13question I've been asking to kind of kick off each interview.
- 1:17What are you doing here? What I mean by that, let me
- 1:19explain it. You know, there's a lot of
- 1:22different things that go on during this week.
- 1:23All amazing things, right? From Hall of Fame dinner,
- 1:25Bowerman Symposiums, executive committee meetings, things like
- 1:32that. What are you doing?
- 1:34What do you? What's your goal?
- 1:36Well, I'm the conference Rep for the mountain E for the exactly
- 1:39the cross country committee. And so I've been going to all
- 1:41those meetings, but also just trying to soak in all the
- 1:45symposiums this year. Didn't get to go to very many
- 1:47last year. And also a little bit of
- 1:49vacation time too, with having a a long cross country season.
- 1:54So it's time to take a little break from it all.
- 1:57So I'm looking forward to that too.
- 1:58That's really. Important that's good you know
- 2:02my whole life as coaches, track coaches and I talked to at least
- 2:06it feels like 100 track coaches every day, but a lot every day
- 2:10and you know one of them. So I probably, I probably and
- 2:14this if I'm saying this without any robata, I probably have more
- 2:20of a knowledge of coaches as people about the XS and OS side
- 2:24than you know, most people, almost at everybody, but most
- 2:27people. And the number one thing that I
- 2:30see us doing to a detriment is that we are coach 24/7.
- 2:35So is this a new? So I'm really proud of you
- 2:38understanding and recognizing I need to take a break that I'm
- 2:41Shane first, not coach first. Has that been something new for
- 2:45you? Did you have to learn that, or
- 2:46has this been the principle of yours for a while?
- 2:49It's been a little difficult. When I got to Frostburg, I had
- 2:53to rebuild that whole program. So.
- 2:55But I didn't really think I could take any time off for a
- 2:58while until we got our roster numbers where they needed to be
- 3:01at that should we finally hit those goals.
- 3:04And so I even told my AD, he's been stressing to me for about
- 3:08taking time off. And yeah, so I, yeah, like
- 3:13finally this year, I felt like I could start to relax and scale
- 3:16it back a little bit more on everything that I do.
- 3:19Made it a point that that have some fun at the convention, like
- 3:22check things out and then take a little trip to Nashville
- 3:25afterwards to something I always wanted to do.
- 3:28And so do that for the weekend before I head back to Maryland.
- 3:31Well, I was going to ask, what does that look like to you?
- 3:34So going to a place you've never been, but always kind of what?
- 3:37Yeah, I mean, I've done it a lot of times for my own coaching.
- 3:39I've traveled all over the country, so it's I'm used to
- 3:42going places I've never been and I meet new people.
- 3:45So figured that why not like go to Nashville a little bit, like
- 3:49take a little couple extra days to relax and then be energized
- 3:54for the rest of the track season?
- 3:56What do you have you set like an itinerary for Nashville or is it
- 3:59something like you want to make sure you go see or do?
- 4:02The only thing I'm that's on my list right now, aside from
- 4:05checking out all the other music venues is going to Garth Brooks
- 4:08New Bar. Big fan of his.
- 4:12I want to check that out. I caught it.
- 4:14Come on now. Yeah, you can't go wrong with
- 4:16Garth Brooks. That's right.
- 4:17Yeah, Did. You grow up a country.
- 4:20Ohh yeah. Grew up on country like on Garth
- 4:23especially, and then I lived down to Oklahoma, so flying
- 4:27coached out there and make sure I went out to a lot of different
- 4:30venues there and so. And he's an Okie, I'm an Okie,
- 4:33so I'll go check it out. Oh yeah, Oklahoma State.
- 4:38Yeah, a lot of people don't know that about it.
- 4:40That's a nice sign for him to make it.
- 4:42Too. So what was and I came over with
- 4:46the the Superman, the ultimate name.
- 4:48He wouldn't. Carter, Chris Gaines so.
- 4:50What was up with the Chris Gaines then?
- 4:51I. Think he was just trying to have
- 4:52a little bit of fun. I met the guy.
- 4:59Oh, good. OK, great.
- 5:01Thank you, Dan. Appreciate it.
- 5:03Yeah. What was up with that?
- 5:03So just kind of wanted to, like, be able to publish music without
- 5:06the Garth Brooks name not attached to it.
- 5:09Like, it automatically hits gold, but it kind of does.
- 5:11But like, he could play around and do some different things.
- 5:14Yeah, I think that's all he was looking to do with the like,
- 5:17spelling something new, have a little bit of fun.
- 5:19Yeah. And stuff.
- 5:20And that was weird. It was, but I.
- 5:23Can't imagine. Yeah, I think like guards and
- 5:25Taylor Swift things like, I mean, everything is under every
- 5:28little microscope. She would agree a little bit
- 5:32like that for coaching track and field and cross country.
- 5:34Right. We may not have the national
- 5:36media, which I would love for us to, you know, it's a little bit
- 5:38be careful what you ask for, right?
- 5:39It's like, you know, you'll see today the New York Times are
- 5:41calling me every day like, hey, what happened to cross country
- 5:42season this year, You know, but you know, you certainly are
- 5:46every little mood where you choose to go to meets, who you
- 5:49choose to run in those needs. Why are you holding that person
- 5:51level? How did that person get injured?
- 5:53What did you do? It's really a little bit.
- 5:56Unfair. That definitely can be, yeah.
- 5:58Especially, I mean, like you got people from outside the program
- 6:01trying to figure out why you're doing what you're doing when
- 6:04they don't really see the whole picture of it.
- 6:06And yeah, that's, that's probably like the biggest issue
- 6:09with it. But beside me, we try to do our
- 6:12best at my place with establishing like the why
- 6:15behind. Everything.
- 6:16And like teaching our athletes at and so hopefully they buy
- 6:20into it like that. And I mean, it's carried over.
- 6:23It's brought a lot of success in this program and it's like the
- 6:28administration find in the bubble villain.
- 6:30So it's, it's been an exciting growth to see in prospects.
- 6:35We had George Williams, now retired coach St. on the
- 6:40podcast. He has the same.
- 6:43It's been decades that he's had to say.
- 6:45If you're not in the huddle, you don't know the play.
- 6:48Meaning, you know, if I've seen Shane, one of your athletes get
- 6:51hurt and I'm like, well, you know, that kid was in my
- 6:54program. They wouldn't get hurt and no
- 6:56one realizes, Well, that kid went out and played basketball
- 6:58at midnight towards when it's whatever.
- 6:59You know, it's like you don't know what's going on over there.
- 7:02Guys. It's it's really like it really
- 7:04helped me to like understand and see like not to have judgments.
- 7:08So I don't know what's going on, but you don't know what's going
- 7:10on with your athletes. Such a I'm not in the huddle, I
- 7:12don't know the place. How do you recommend that that
- 7:14episode he. Did a great job all.
- 7:16Right, Shane, let's have a little fun here.
- 7:17I've got 100 random, and I mean, they're random brother questions
- 7:20here. You get the big number, I get to
- 7:21ask the question. So 12 favorite number.
- 7:24Favorite number? All right, Did the apple fall
- 7:27far from the tree? Let's hear it.
- 7:29Are you team Apple or are you team Android?
- 7:34Probably go with an Android. It should.
- 7:36Be that hard. What is your phone?
- 7:38Well, that's an Apple, but it's a work phone.
- 7:40My first smartphone was an Android so.
- 7:43So if you had your choice, you'd be on Team Android.
- 7:45I go with whatever cheaper. Yeah, not Yeah, OK.
- 7:48That's an automatic viewer of the Android team.
- 7:51I gotta be able to. Afford it?
- 7:52Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's amazing what the the prices
- 7:55of these things, man. It's amazing.
- 7:57Shane, thank you so much, man. We're grateful.
- 7:59This is not always the easiest thing in the world to sit in the
- 8:01hot seat. And so for everybody who sits in
- 8:03the hot seat today, you've got a little token of appreciation
- 8:06from all of us here at Gill. You've got a custom Gill
- 8:08Connections Christmas order before you for.
- 8:10Your Christmas tour. Awesome.
- 8:12Thank you, brother. Appreciate you being here, man.
- 8:13Thank you so much. Oh, for me.
- 8:15Oh, hey, come on. No, no.
- 8:16We got to make a little bigger deal of this.
- 8:18Yeah. Yeah.
- 8:19I love this. You know, if you're following
- 8:21along on Twitter at Mike Cunningham, you know, it's a
- 8:24real like I get to say this to you right here.
- 8:27I just appreciate this. It's not lightning that I wear
- 8:30these shirts. You know, it is kind of my my
- 8:33memento, my memory, my passion. When I'm in that weight room
- 8:36working out, I'm doing it to be healthier and my family.
- 8:40Amy, I know you're probably watching I love you too, baby
- 8:42and the kids, but it really is. It's like that memory when I see
- 8:46whatever school I have that day on, it's, it's I get to think of
- 8:49you, Shane, and like what I get to do and how I get to serve and
- 8:54uplift and honor what you do for young people.
- 8:57Maybe it's it's immeasurable what you do.
- 8:59I appreciate the support you give to coaches and I love
- 9:02seeing you wearing those other gears.
- 9:04So I got. You.
- 9:04I got it. Yeah.
- 9:05Thank you, brother. Thank you so much.
- 9:08It really does. It means the world to me when
- 9:11coaches send me these shirts and I have shirts from around the
- 9:13country and you know, there's nothing, there's not a bigger
- 9:17passion and uplifting and honor that I can do to work every day
- 9:22to get better personally, health wise.
- 9:25And also how I go about doing my business of serving coaches,
- 9:28empowering coaches with innovative equipment.
- 9:30And it's just a great memento and a great memory for what I'm
- 9:34doing every day to help serve coaches around the country.
