- 0:26Hey everybody, welcome back to the Pop Culture Junkie Podcast. I'm Hayley, I am here with my fellow Junkies.
- 0:37I'm Shanua, and I'm Nicole. And this episode is a little bittersweet for me because it is my last episode on the Pop Culture Junkie Podcast.
- 0:52For now, I'm going to put parentheses for now, hyphen, asterisk, because once a Junkie, always a Junkie.
- 1:00But I have a new job that is very exciting. I'm completely changing careers. And it is going to require a lot more of my time.
- 1:16And most likely relocating my physical self. And it's a big change, a lot going on for me and my family. And so, unfortunately, that means I won't be on the podcast weekend and week out. But I hope that doesn't mean that you guys will forget about me.
- 1:39Oh my God, of course not. It's been so incredible, Hayley. It just feels so natural having you here that it's weird to think about a time before you were on the podcast.
- 1:51So, I don't know, it's been incredible. You're just such a joy and so kind and funny and smart and such a fucking nerd.
- 2:01Ah, shucks.
- 2:03I don't know. We're going to miss you a lot, but we're really, really excited for you. Yeah, I cannot even express how much I enjoy having you on the show.
- 2:14Someone in the middle, I feel like between me and Shauna, where you know, half of the things Shauna talks about, you know, half the things I talk about, where's that I could just talk about long order with you. I could talk about a bunch of different stuff. And you would understand.
- 2:27I'm very, very excited for you. I can't wait to hear everything. All the stories. Hopefully you can tell us maybe because what you're going to be doing is so, so cool. And I'm so happy for you because I know you've wanted this for a very long time. And you finally get to pursue it.
- 2:41And I can't wait to see the things that you do because I know you're going to do great things.
- 2:45Thank you guys. I appreciate it. It's honestly, I was like up in my feels earlier today.
- 2:51I was like, oh man, this, I'm obviously I'm really excited, but like sucks because this is so fun. And thankfully, like, I really feel like we're friends. So I know it's not going to be like the last time we chat. And I better be getting texts about long order and Mandalorian and last of us season two and all the upcoming things because I'm going to need somebody to talk with about that stuff.
- 3:20You will still be in the Junkie group chat. Yes. Absolutely. Absolutely. Always. Well, I figure since it's my last episode, I just would take it over.
- 3:37You know, we are following your lead this week, Hayley the Brave. Carte Blanche just decided to decide before we get into what I wanted to talk about. Let's do our normal.
- 3:51For my last thought. Let's do our normal.
- 3:54Pop it and drop it reviews. What did you guys watch and watch it? Everybody check out or skip. Oh man. Okay, I feel like I watched so much since we last recorded.
- 4:09I'll speed through a couple of them. Definitely started a new season of Demon Slayer, which I'm excited about. It's an anime that my husband and I watch.
- 4:18We finished the latest season of my hero academia, another anime. God, I mean, I'm such a fan of both of those and it's so frustrating because you have to wait so long in between seasons for a lot of these.
- 4:31Gosh, I finished only murders in the building season one. And I called it. Oh, I knew it was her. Okay, spoilers for anybody who hasn't finished only murders in the building season one.
- 4:44It was like a couple episodes before and I said, I don't know. She seems a little iffy. She seems sketched to me. So I called it. And he didn't. He thought it was. He, oh my God, he thought it was tied eye guy again. And I was like, no, we're past that. We're past that.
- 5:01I thought it was her. Jan, right? That's her name. Yeah. I thought it was her a few episodes before the end. But then they threw in like another red hailing. So it.
- 5:11Yeah, I couldn't this side. I was kind of going back and forth. But I know I kept in like she's too similar to her character in the office. We have to make her kind of different because she's just too likable. But then she started getting a little.
- 5:24I don't know. A little suspicious. Just wanting to be in the investigation. So bad and getting kind of like but her that they didn't. Well, you know what? No, the first time that it tingled my.
- 5:36My true crime senses was when she left the note under Brazos. I don't know. She left the note under his door asking for a date. And I was like, didn't the murder also leave notes it kind of look like the same handwriting. And I was like, maybe I'm just going crazy.
- 5:54I wasn't. I'm good at this. And then I saw two movies that I'll talk about briefly. So John Wick Chapter Three. No, Four Chapter Four. There's so many of these movies.
- 6:08John Wick Chapter Four came out and it was really good. I mean, it's exactly what she want from a John Wick movie. The action is incredible. The stunts are amazing. Like I can't you can tell has aged as we all do with the passage of time from the first one where he's maybe not doing.
- 6:29I don't know. For some of these things. I'm a stunts or. Yeah. For some of them. I'm like somebody could have taken him down. Come on man.
- 6:36But you know, it kind of leaves it where it's like this seems like it could be the last one. But at the same time it makes so much money that it wouldn't shock me if it's not or they make spin-offs.
- 6:49So I'm definitely going to pop John Wick chapter four. If you are a John Wick fan, it's definitely worth the watch. And if you're not a John Wick fan, go back and check out our Keanu 101.
- 7:00About first John Wick. And then you'll be coming. Even if you're not a John Wick fan, I mean, you'll go into this movie and it's definitely deep in the lore at this point. And you won't know why are they chasing who were these people? Why do we care?
- 7:15But it's still just, you know, fun action popcorn flick too. You want to turn your brain off a little bit. But I definitely suggest watching all the first three to know what the hell is going on.
- 7:26And then another franchise that I've been getting into recently are the Creed movies. So I'm definitely, as we've mentioned before, not like an inspirational sports film fan like Miss Nicole.
- 7:40So if it has a 10 about the Creed movies, but Michael Beachwarden is so fine. So twist my arm. I guess I'll give it a watch. The Creed movies are really good.
- 7:51I've never seen the original Rocky movies, but I already know enough just from being a pop culture junkie of who Rocky Balboa is.
- 7:59I knew how Apollo Creed dies and kind of the backstory there just from being a movie fan. But it's really good. All three of them. We watched them maybe within the past like two months. My husband and I.
- 8:11And Michael Beachwarden is amazing. Tessa Thompson is really good and it's too. It pulls at your heartstrings. The one thing I will say about this new one that was a little glaring to me is that it's the first one that Silvestre Stallone is not in.
- 8:30And they never provide an explanation for why he's not there. So on the back in Silvestre Stallone had like a disagreement with the movie. It get the filmmakers and didn't really like where some stuff was going.
- 8:43So he's listed as I think a producer on the movie, but he said that he really didn't have anything to do with it. Like, oh, he loves the Rocky character. He loves the Creed character, but he's just stuck back.
- 8:55The first two movies, he's like he's Adonis Creed's trainer. He's really heavily involved in his life. And they're like family and shit. And then in this one, he's just not there. Yeah, I'm like, is he dead? Like he had cancer a couple movies ago.
- 9:13But it made it seem like he went into remission. I don't know. It's definitely in the future a little bit from the second movie. Like Creeds and Retirement at this point, or he's about to go into retirement, which you do very young as a boxer.
- 9:30The whole time they're like, you're so old man. And I'm like, fuck you. He's like 34.
- 9:36But yeah, they never mentioned why Rocky's not there. But beyond that, definitely gonna pop all the Creed movies, gonna pop creep three. Michael be joined with his shirt off.
- 9:46It's good stuff. Nice. Racking up those sequels like Infinity Stones.
- 9:51Oh my gosh, right? I'm just I'm getting through all these. My husband's like, we should watch this movie. We should watch these. He's got good taste.
- 9:59I could test right now. What about Unicorn? One of the things I watched was the first couple episodes of full swing on Netflix. Is it about swingers or golf or swingers who play golf?
- 10:14It's about golf. It's about the PGA tour. The first couple episodes I've watched it just kind of goes along with the players and the tournament and follows them.
- 10:26Their home life, how they prepare for tournaments and stuff like that, which me being the sports fanatic like we just said, I am enjoying it.
- 10:34It's cool to see the behind the scenes of the preparation, how hard these guys are on themselves every week for each tournament.
- 10:43And the second episode I think had, well, not I think I know it had the ways open in Scottsdale.
- 10:52I think they did a cover of that and all the golfers on there were saying how that tournament is their favorite tournament just because of the fans that are there and just the atmosphere.
- 11:00Because we're all wasted and crazy.
- 11:02The worst management. No wasted management.
- 11:05They love the 16 pole. That's the crazy hole. The party on the swingers go run down and they're literally.
- 11:14It's just so fun. I was there this year and I was on the 16th hole on Sunday and it's just so funny because if a player misses the green, they get booed.
- 11:24They get very like happy Gilmore.
- 11:28It really is. God, I haven't been since college and me and this girl I went, ended up getting like kicked out. She got us kicked out.
- 11:38I had to help security carry the limp body out and have not been back since because I don't like golf.
- 11:45I dated a professional golfer. I won't say his name. It's like a hot second in college.
- 11:50But I had to pretend like I thought golf was interesting for a couple of months.
- 11:55Oh wow. Honestly, I was there for it.
- 12:00That's really interesting. Go on. Also, I'll have the steak.
- 12:04So what platforms are on Nicole? It's on Netflix.
- 12:11And then I finally seen screen 6. Oh, was it good? It's really good. Actually, I am a fan of the screen franchise.
- 12:23I think every movie that they produce has been good. I know sometimes when there's multiple movies of one franchise,
- 12:31it becomes old and overdone at a certain point. But it was really good.
- 12:37I think it's a really good twist that they do. Spoiler, I guess. I'm not going to say who.
- 12:43That does say who it is. I won't. I won't. I promise.
- 12:46But instead of the previous years, like at the originals and then screen 5 and stuff like that, there's three killers.
- 12:56It's really good. The action is incredible. Janet Ortega is obviously incredible.
- 13:03She's such a good. She's a really good. She plays a really good part. I would definitely pop it.
- 13:08If you have a chance for like, screen movies, if you like the screen franchise, it's really good.
- 13:13I need to catch up on that franchise. Is that streaming somewhere?
- 13:18No, I went to the movie theater and paid to watch it. There you go. Nice.
- 13:22You know, I've seen the first one. And for years, I thought I had seen the second one,
- 13:27but then recently my friend and I watched it. And I was like, I have never seen any of this in my life.
- 13:33The whole time I was like, "What? What? They're making a movie about the movie."
- 13:38And she's like, "You've never seen this, have you?" No, I haven't. So apparently I need to watch them all.
- 13:43Yeah, I've only seen the first one. And like, I love it. So I don't know why I've never seen the other ones.
- 13:49Yeah, I give it a whirl. I mean, it was very cheesy, but I'd seen the scene where Sarah Michelle Geller dies,
- 13:58spoiler from a movie from 30 years ago. With Sarah Michelle Geller is in-screen too?
- 14:03For like a second, she's definitely not the main character.
- 14:06Wasn't she on the way you did last summer? Yes, she was. And I also recently watched that with the same friend.
- 14:11Oh, nice. I'm in like a scary movie rewatch. Like I watched Contagion recently, which I had watched since the before times.
- 14:22Yeah, and it's still the whole time I'm like, "That happened to us. That happened in real life."
- 14:28Except for Gwyneth Paltrow getting her face peeled off. That didn't happen in the life.
- 14:33I'm gonna probably do. It's part of her beauty and health.
- 14:37Yeah, exactly. So it's like, probably the other got a new one.
- 14:41Every morning, I do my energy shifting, peeling of my face, and then I sew my-
- 14:48I love it with my-
- 14:49I love it with my-
- 14:50I love it with my-
- 14:51I love it with my-
- 14:52I love it with my-
- 14:53I love it with my-
- 14:54I love it with my-
- 14:55Oh my god. Yeah, I need to get on that Nicole.
- 14:58What else? What else, Nicole?
- 15:00The other thing I've been watching is on peacock. It's called Killer Cases.
- 15:04And it's a show about just recaps of real crime that's happened.
- 15:11People dying. They go-
- 15:13They show real footage from the crime scene. They show real footage from the court scenes of-
- 15:19Bodies to their-
- 15:20Are there dead bodies?
- 15:21I don't think they show bodies, but they show blood splatter and stuff.
- 15:26But you want to see bodies watch homicide for the holidays and peacock?
- 15:31Yeah, that's the other one you talked about.
- 15:33That one's really good.
- 15:34We were like, "Bodies!"
- 15:35Yeah!
- 15:36But Killer Cases is pretty good. I like the true crime stuff and I've seen the real footage
- 15:45and stuff. I know it's kind of gross, but-
- 15:47No, I think it's sick.
- 15:48Yeah, it makes the show more interesting when you can actually see the stuff firsthand, I guess.
- 15:53But if you like true crime, I would pop it. I was kind of hesitant because there's so much true crime stuff out there nowadays.
- 15:59It's like, what do I watch?
- 16:00And what's going to be good?
- 16:01It's all repetitive.
- 16:02That was pretty good.
- 16:03Sorry, I'd pop that one.
- 16:04Nice.
- 16:05Yeah, that's a good little-
- 16:06Is there one thing I know?
- 16:07It's that Nicole likes true crime and sports and Shana likes bodies.
- 16:14I like looking at dead bodies.
- 16:17I like bodies in every sense of the word.
- 16:20I like looking at dead bodies and then I like watching bodies like do it.
- 16:27I just like bodies.
- 16:32Oh, goodness.
- 16:33I love it.
- 16:35I'll watch it if people have sex or if they die.
- 16:38Rather wise I'm out.
- 16:39I'm out.
- 16:40Obviously.
- 16:41Or have sex till they die.
- 16:42That's going to be a new reality show.
- 16:47Who can survive?
- 16:49Wasn't it like so long to the ER?
- 16:52Oh, yeah, that is a show.
- 16:55I think that's people like sticking things where they're not supposed to be stuck though.
- 16:59Benny slipping in the shower.
- 17:02You know what?
- 17:03Speaking of sex toys for like two seconds.
- 17:07I promise it's related to pop culture.
- 17:09I swear to God.
- 17:10Okay, so in Only Murders in the Building, my recent A-Binder is because of the bassoon cleaner.
- 17:16And I was wondering if anybody's watching this show and they played the bassoon, do you think
- 17:22they figured it out just immediately?
- 17:25Because they were going through Tim Kono's like sex toys in maybe the second or third episode.
- 17:30And they pulled that out and they were like, what the hell is this?
- 17:34True.
- 17:35And I wonder if any bassoonist watching it was like, oh, Jan did it.
- 17:38You know there had to be.
- 17:39You know someone was like, oh yeah.
- 17:41Yeah, it's her.
- 17:42Oh yeah.
- 17:43Oh yeah.
- 17:44Oh yeah.
- 17:45Oh that is.
- 17:46It makes you wonder if like one of the writers was a bassoonist.
- 17:48Third thing to bring into the show.
- 17:53And it had to be absurd instrument.
- 17:55Otherwise, if it was just like a cleaning tool that a lot of people would know, it would probably
- 18:01give it away a lot sooner.
- 18:03So I don't know.
- 18:04If any listeners played the bassoon and you figured out that Jan was the killer right away, please
- 18:10let us know.
- 18:11Yeah, it's interesting.
- 18:13All right, I checked out a couple things.
- 18:16I was sick last week as you guys know.
- 18:19And so I decided to let me backtrack for a second.
- 18:24So in our Samuel Jackson 101, we watched Pulp Fiction, right?
- 18:28And that was the first time I had watched a Quentin Tarantino film.
- 18:33Oh wow.
- 18:34Start by me.
- 18:35Okay.
- 18:36And I'd seen a couple TV episodes he'd done, but I never watched one of his movies.
- 18:41And as you may remember, I did not love Pulp Fiction.
- 18:45There's not much am.
- 18:47And so I was like, I have to watch another Quentin Tarantino movie to decide if I didn't like Pulp Fiction,
- 18:55or if I don't like Quentin Tarantino.
- 18:57So on one of my sick days, I watched Reservoir Dogs because it's the shortest I think of all of his movies.
- 19:04Yeah.
- 19:05And I will say I definitively realized that I don't like Quentin Tarantino.
- 19:11Yeah.
- 19:12Okay.
- 19:13Okay.
- 19:14I'll say I like Reservoir Dogs more than Pulp Fiction.
- 19:17I think that's partially because it was about half as long.
- 19:20And it also has like one plot.
- 19:24Like the, you know, heist gone wrong is the plot of the whole movie.
- 19:31Yeah.
- 19:32And I will say that I really like Tim Roth.
- 19:35I thought he did a really good job in that movie.
- 19:38But I do not love Tarantino's insistence on creating unlikeable characters that I am forced to sit and watch for an extended period of time.
- 19:51Like just the racism and the misogyny and the like beating me over the head with it.
- 19:57Like I was just like, I don't care about any of these people.
- 20:00Like I want them all to die.
- 20:01So that's really not for me.
- 20:03And then also, you know, he just, it's talking.
- 20:08It's laying on the floor bleeding out.
- 20:09It's a lot of talking for an hour.
- 20:11And I am going to pitch a Quentin Tarantino movie to you.
- 20:15Okay.
- 20:16You should watch Django Unchained.
- 20:19Django Unchained.
- 20:20Okay.
- 20:21Yes.
- 20:22So it's Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson is in it because it's a Quentin Tarantino movie.
- 20:30And Carrie Washington.
- 20:33And Django is a freed slave.
- 20:36And him and Christoph Waltz set out to try to save Django's wife, who is being held in slavery by Leonardo Caprio's character.
- 20:46And if you want to root for somebody, you're going to root for Django.
- 20:51Okay.
- 20:52I mean, and Christoph Waltz.
- 20:53He's like the opposite of what he is in Inglourious Basterds, which is a Nazi.
- 20:59And in this part, it's like Inglourious Basterds.
- 21:02Yeah.
- 21:03So I'm somewhat familiar.
- 21:04That's his scouts.
- 21:05But yeah, Django Unchained, I mean, it is hyper violent because it is a Quentin Tarantino movie.
- 21:10But you actually get to root for the main character because you root for him and his wife reuniting.
- 21:16And, you know, they're in so in love and Christoph Waltz is such a great guy helping them out.
- 21:21And you want Leonardo Caprio to just fucking eat it.
- 21:25But I know.
- 21:26I know.
- 21:27You're going to have to watch that one and then report back to me.
- 21:29Okay.
- 21:30All right.
- 21:31I'll have to give it a chance.
- 21:32I was going to try Kill Bill.
- 21:33Isn't that Quentin Tarantino?
- 21:34Ooh, yeah.
- 21:35Kill Bill is good too.
- 21:36I like the Kill Bill movies.
- 21:38I mean, again, hyper violent, hyper sexual, like bad words galore.
- 21:44Yeah.
- 21:45But it's a kick ass woman.
- 21:47See, yeah, if the plot's good and the action's good, like I'm down for all of that.
- 21:53I just so far.
- 21:54I'm going to root for her.
- 21:55Yeah.
- 21:56I can see that.
- 21:57Yeah.
- 21:58So, Jingle and Change and Kill Bill, I will.
- 22:00Okay.
- 22:01But I have to report back once you have a more--
- 22:04You know, once you have a few spare hours, anyway.
- 22:06Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 22:07The other things that I checked out this week, there's a series on Netflix called Unstable
- 22:14that is Rob Lowe and his son, John Owen Lowe.
- 22:19And it was actually created by his son.
- 22:22And it's about Rob Lowe plays kind of like an Elon Musk.
- 22:27If Elon Musk was a good guy, kind of role where he's, you know, using his big brain to try
- 22:34to make the world more green.
- 22:37But he has just lost his wife.
- 22:39And she was kind of the stable one in the marriage.
- 22:43She's the one that kept him grounded.
- 22:44And so now he's kind of losing his mind.
- 22:46And his son and him have always fought it.
- 22:50And his son comes to work for him to try to kind of help him.
- 22:54And I think I'm about six episodes in to the season.
- 22:59And I will say if you like Rob Lowe, then you'll probably like the series.
- 23:03If you don't like Rob Lowe, then you won't, because he's front and center.
- 23:06But I like it.
- 23:09I will pop it.
- 23:10I will say I like it probably the most out of like new series that I have watched.
- 23:16And I love that I kind of binge it.
- 23:21And it's kind of nice background.
- 23:23Like I got to work from home or I got to do the dishes or I got to do, I'm eating dinner
- 23:27and I kind of just want something on.
- 23:29It's not like must see TV.
- 23:31But I do think it's entertaining enough that it's worth checking out.
- 23:36I think Rob Lowe seems like, I don't know, I think I've seen him and I've liked him in
- 23:40the past.
- 23:41I mean, I love him in parks and rec.
- 23:43Me too.
- 23:44And he's, yeah, I mean, he's kind of a similar Chris Trigger-esque in a lot of ways.
- 23:49So.
- 23:50And then the thing that I got to pop all the way is the Super Mario Brothers movie.
- 23:56Oh, good.
- 23:57It was so good.
- 23:58It was really good.
- 23:59Like, unironically, you know, as an adult, like obviously I went with my kids and especially
- 24:07my son, because he's obsessed with all things Mario.
- 24:09But even if I didn't have kids, it would have been enjoyable to watch.
- 24:17And my husband actually realized after it ended that it was written and directed by Aaron
- 24:25Horvath, who is the creator and writer of Teen Titans Go.
- 24:31Which makes a lot of sense because that is like my favorite animated anything that my,
- 24:36it's like a toss up between that and Bluey, but really like Teen Titans Go has moments where
- 24:42my kids are not paying attention and I'm sitting down and I'm watching it.
- 24:44So it's got humor for adults for sure.
- 24:48It's a perfect blend of nostalgia.
- 24:50They throw in like stuff that you forget about like the Donkey Kong rap and all this kind
- 24:54of stuff.
- 24:55And the cast, the cast is really great.
- 24:58Chris Pratt.
- 24:59He does a good job.
- 25:01Yeah.
- 25:02I mean, they opted to go this like, you know, Brooklyn route.
- 25:05So he's not doing kind of this Italian accent.
- 25:09But Charles Martinette is that his name?
- 25:12The guy who played the original Mario voice?
- 25:15I want to say it's Charles Martinette.
- 25:18He is, he plays the voice of Mario's dad in the movie.
- 25:23So he's there and it's just, it's so good.
- 25:27They established like a whole full plot out of a game that really doesn't have a plot.
- 25:33And it was really cute.
- 25:34Like I would go see it again.
- 25:35It was that cute.
- 25:36I was like, we go again?
- 25:37I'm like, yeah.
- 25:38Like, yes, I'm invested.
- 25:39I'm so excited to see it.
- 25:41I'm so glad that it's good.
- 25:43Yeah.
- 25:44It was really good.
- 25:45And critics are stupid.
- 25:46They gave it like a 48% or something on Rotten Tomatoes.
- 25:49And I was like, what do you want?
- 25:51It's a cartoon.
- 25:52Yeah.
- 25:53It's a Mario movie.
- 25:54Like, I'm not a guy.
- 25:55Not everything has to be like, Coco, you know, and have like, you know, sometimes you
- 26:00make you weep at the end.
- 26:01Sometimes I don't want to cry.
- 26:02Sometimes you can just giggle through mushroom kingdom.
- 26:05Yeah.
- 26:06That's all I want to do.
- 26:07It was good.
- 26:08Definitely.
- 26:09Yeah.
- 26:10Pop the Mario movie.
- 26:15All right.
- 26:16So, with it being my swan song, I decided if I could do anything on this episode, it would
- 26:23be to force you guys to watch my favorite thing in the whole world, which is the X-Files.
- 26:33So we binged all 11 seasons at X-Files in February.
- 26:39In both movies.
- 26:40In one week.
- 26:42No, I had you guys watch the pilot very first episode in hopes that per chance it might
- 26:47plant a seed that you may later watch.
- 26:52I'll just, I'll get you a list later of episodes to watch.
- 26:55You don't need to watch all 11 seasons.
- 26:57But I wanted to know, I have so many questions for you guys as first time viewers.
- 27:03So, allow me to like step and put on my interviewer hat.
- 27:07What were your initial impressions of the X-Files?
- 27:11Now, for anyone who may be unfamiliar, okay, the X-Files stars David DeCovny and Jillian
- 27:15Anderson.
- 27:16It premiered on Fox September 10th, 1993.
- 27:20So I was six years old when this came out 30 years ago now.
- 27:25Nicole was just a twinkle in someone's eye.
- 27:29Not even thought it was just a bad one.
- 27:35Not even a fetus.
- 27:36A toddler.
- 27:38So, we were all young or non-existent when it premiered.
- 27:44But I do have early memories of being, I don't think I watched it when I was six, but I do
- 27:49think I was seven or eight years old.
- 27:51And I have these memories of sitting on the couch with my brother and kind of watching
- 27:55it like this.
- 27:58But very early on in my life, it became this like formative experience for me so much so I
- 28:05named my son after the show.
- 28:08And it's actually the show is actually the reason my husband and I met.
- 28:11He sent me a message on my space because I had the X-Files as my favorite show and it was
- 28:18his favorite show too.
- 28:19So he sent me a message.
- 28:21So we kind of owe I owe the X-Files like my life really.
- 28:26So no pressure on you if you hated it, you can absolutely say so.
- 28:31No, we can't.
- 28:32But I want to know, I literally will not judge you.
- 28:35But I want to know, I just want to know what were your initial impressions, initial thoughts
- 28:39watching the X-Files for the first time?
- 28:43I truly deeply, I'm not just saying this because I love you, I really enjoyed it.
- 28:49That was the first ever episode of the X-Files that I've seen.
- 28:52My mom had some CD growing up, I want to say it was called like pure moods or something.
- 28:59And for some reason the X-Files theme song was on it.
- 29:04And so I always thought this is the theme song kind of slapped but that's like all I knew
- 29:07about it.
- 29:09And I really enjoyed it.
- 29:10I mean from the first time that David DeCovny shows up on screen, I texted you guys in
- 29:15the group chat like, oh, I get it.
- 29:18I've always had he was a good looking guy but I get it.
- 29:23Julian Anderson, I mean in the beginning she seems a little cookie cutter but I think she's
- 29:27supposed to because she's kind of the straight lace like, oh, I'm doing this by the books and
- 29:33I don't believe in this mumbo jumbo but then I'm sure as the show goes on she's gonna loosen
- 29:39up.
- 29:40But I really enjoyed it.
- 29:41I think I might give it a try.
- 29:43The only thing holding me back is that it's freaking 11 seasons long.
- 29:48That's one of the reasons I didn't get ever get into super natural.
- 29:51It's just because I feel like I missed the train.
- 29:53And now like no one has time for that.
- 29:55I'm not telling you to sit down and watch super natural, lost or I don't know or the X-Files
- 30:02like.
- 30:03Yeah, it is.
- 30:04But I did really like it.
- 30:06Nice.
- 30:07I really enjoyed it too.
- 30:08It's right up my alley with super natural and crime.
- 30:13I love ghost adventures.
- 30:14I know that's not what we're talking about but.
- 30:16Dude, I love ghost adventures.
- 30:18I love ghost adventures.
- 30:19I love true crime.
- 30:20We know that.
- 30:21So the two put together.
- 30:24I honestly was so oblivious to what the title the X-Files met.
- 30:28I never put it together.
- 30:29That was like extra to much real.
- 30:31But yeah, I didn't put two and two together and also because I probably put it off to
- 30:35you because one didn't really know about it until you Haley introduced us to it and
- 30:42two probably because of how old it is.
- 30:44But watching it, I don't think I would have thought it was made in 93 or put out in 93 because
- 30:51I don't, it doesn't look that old to me.
- 30:53Like the scenes look like it could be over 2000s even.
- 30:58Definitely not modern day type shooting but the acting, the way they put it together is
- 31:05really good.
- 31:06I really, really enjoyed it and I agree.
- 31:08I think I'm going to continue to watch it to be honest with you.
- 31:11At least get through season one and see what happens.
- 31:13But I think I think you might have just introduced me to a new show in the week.
- 31:19Yay.
- 31:20I will say out of, you know, a lot of shows that I have watched of which there are many, I
- 31:27feel like the X-Files has a really strong pilot.
- 31:29Like right out the gate.
- 31:32It really did.
- 31:33I was surprised.
- 31:34Yeah.
- 31:35If you're introduced to the dynamic, you're hooked into the story, like the mystery of
- 31:42it all.
- 31:43It's very tight, like the format of the episode is really tight.
- 31:48I wish I could say that that holds up for 11 seasons.
- 31:51It definitely does not.
- 31:52But, you know, like Shawnee you mentioned supernatural.
- 31:55The X-Files really is the blueprint for all these other shows.
- 31:59If you take any other show where you partner up a guy like Castle, Bones, Lucifer, yeah,
- 32:07Lucifer, like you take any fringe, fringe is literally like X-Files rip off, side story.
- 32:16But yeah, you take any of that stuff and it's really, it's based on the X-Files so much
- 32:21so that supernatural has an X-Files themed episode.
- 32:24Bones has an X-Files themed episode.
- 32:26Like they pay homage to the story.
- 32:30So it is iconic in that way, I think, where like, you know, even just seeing one episode,
- 32:36it is worth it.
- 32:39And I'm not joking when I say I could tell you what episodes to watch.
- 32:44But also the movie.
- 32:46If I would say if there's like one other thing that you ever watched, the X-Files related,
- 32:50a movie that came out in 1997 called Fight the Future.
- 32:54And in 7 or 98.
- 32:56And it takes place between, I think, season 6 and season 7.
- 33:01And all you can do is.
- 33:02There's two movies.
- 33:03There's two movies, yeah.
- 33:05So one takes place mid show, one takes place after the series ended after season 9.
- 33:09Got it.
- 33:10Okay.
- 33:11And if you ask me as a diehard, that second movie, to me, is kind of where the series ends.
- 33:17The revival seasons, seasons 10 and 11 were a huge disappointment.
- 33:22Like they go back and they rewrite a lot of the plot.
- 33:26Yeah.
- 33:27It's just really not, I don't think it does any favors to the original story.
- 33:32I hate that.
- 33:33Yeah.
- 33:34So I will watch some of those revival episodes, but I watched them almost like their fanfiction,
- 33:39like this like side story that has no real reason.
- 33:40This is a canon, it's fun.
- 33:42Yeah, it's not canon.
- 33:43But yeah, it's season, season 6 of the X-Files is my all time favorite season.
- 33:49It has the most like bangers one after the other.
- 33:53So for anybody, you guys included, who might watch it, there's basically two different types
- 33:58of episodes.
- 34:00There's one that are called mythology episodes and those are the ones that deal with what
- 34:05you guys were introduced to, which is anything heavy to do with aliens.
- 34:09And I do like, the mythology gets real slippery later on in the series and we're like, what
- 34:14that F is going on.
- 34:15But I do like that it's not just aliens want to kidnap you to probe you for no reason.
- 34:21There is a bigger goal or end game that's going on there.
- 34:27So those are all the mythology stories and those ones you kind of have to like watch in
- 34:31order because otherwise you're confused.
- 34:34But then there's episodes called Monster of the Week episodes, which are just one off.
- 34:39But it has to.
- 34:40Yeah, they're just one off like, you know, you don't have to know anything about the show
- 34:43really to tune in and enjoy them.
- 34:45And those are the ones that I tend to recommend to people like, hey, just watch this one episode
- 34:51or watch a few of these.
- 34:55And they're really, really funny and some are really scary, not to be like a Cabernet
- 35:01X-Files trivia.
- 35:02But there is this episode called Home that for I think even still it is banned on network
- 35:12TV.
- 35:13So it aired thinking that yesterday, there is an episode of X-Files that's supposed to
- 35:17be so fucking scary that like, it's like banned or something.
- 35:22Yeah.
- 35:23So it aired originally with a disclaimer.
- 35:26And then after it aired that first time, they took it off it.
- 35:28You couldn't watch it in reruns.
- 35:30You could only watch it on like DVDs.
- 35:32And oddly enough, I think it's the first episode I remember watching like in my youth.
- 35:37That's it.
- 35:38It is the first one that stands out in my head is like, I remember that show.
- 35:41And a lot of times with people with the X-Files, like people who haven't seen it, if you've
- 35:45ever seen the X-Files, they'll be like, no, but I saw this one episode and it was so
- 35:49weft up and it's always home, always.
- 35:53So I don't want to tell you too much about it because I don't want to give anything away.
- 35:56But if you like, don't really like messed up stories that you're never going to get out of
- 36:00your head.
- 36:01The only thing that would bother me about this show is if I watch it and for 11 seasons,
- 36:12it's like, no, I still don't think aliens exist.
- 36:24I'm holding what in my hands and she's like, no, I don't.
- 36:28You know, I hope that at some point, she's like, yes, I believe.
- 36:30Because if it goes on for too long, I'm going to be like, bitch, come on.
- 36:32I don't think you can see.
- 36:33I don't think you can see my notes.
- 36:36I'm trying to see if I could get this.
- 36:37But this gribly line right here says new creative way is to not see the truth.
- 36:43Oh my god.
- 36:45That is an unfortunate plot in the X-Files is they find new and creative ways like, okay,
- 36:52slight spoilers.
- 36:53I got to give you slight spoilers because it's just you get in the movie, fight the future
- 36:56that you are going to go watch because it's amazing.
- 36:59The end of the movie, Scollie's on a, like an f-ing, like a ship.
- 37:04She's on a UFO, okay?
- 37:06She's on it.
- 37:08But she's incapacitated.
- 37:11She's passed out.
- 37:12So Mulder like rescues her.
- 37:15She opens her eyes for all of like two seconds to see the UFO.
- 37:23But then passes out and has no memory of it.
- 37:25No.
- 37:26No.
- 37:27I think it gives episode one.
- 37:30I was like aliens.
- 37:31It's aliens.
- 37:32Like, come on, girl.
- 37:34Yeah.
- 37:35No, not a ship.
- 37:36No, not a ship.
- 37:37No.
- 37:38There has to be a scientific explanation for this for like eight seasons.
- 37:42But it does start to, okay.
- 37:44Yeah.
- 37:45I mean, that reminds me of Lucifer too where he keeps being like, no, I'm literally the devil.
- 37:50And she's like, no, no, you're not.
- 37:52He's like, no, I really am.
- 37:53Oh, you.
- 37:55And then literally, like, you know, you don't have to buy yourself.
- 37:57Yeah.
- 37:58I don't think you are.
- 37:59He's like, no, I'm just, it's true though.
- 38:01And then finally, you know, she gets to the point where she's like, oh, you're the fucking
- 38:04devil.
- 38:05And he's like, yeah, yeah.
- 38:07So it's, it's, it's very much like, okay, what was your favorite part of the episode of
- 38:13the pilot?
- 38:14Because I have a very clear favorite part, but I'm curious to know what yours is.
- 38:18My favorite part is when she's looking in the mirror and she finds the little spots on
- 38:22her back and freaks out and like runs to his room.
- 38:28And it makes sense for her to be in her underwear in that moment because I, I hate that where
- 38:32it's just like, oh, the chick's in her underwear for some of your chewed as dumb reason.
- 38:37But she had to show him like this stuff.
- 38:39I mean, I guess she could have just left it her shirt anyway.
- 38:42Yeah.
- 38:43And then you see like, he's a little distracted by her like body for like a split second.
- 38:49And then he focuses and then starts to laugh at her.
- 38:51And it's like, and it's like, candle lit.
- 38:55Yeah.
- 38:56Yeah.
- 38:57I was like, are they going to kiss in the, there's so many points this episode.
- 38:59I was like, are they going to kiss in the first episode?
- 39:01Like that would be ridiculous because I did kind of read ahead.
- 39:04And I think they don't kiss for like many seasons and some of them are under different
- 39:10situations where it's like, that this year's their first real kiss.
- 39:14Yeah.
- 39:15I suppose so.
- 39:16Oh, dude.
- 39:17Anytime anyone's like, it's a slow burn.
- 39:18Like, I can't wait for my ship to get together.
- 39:20I'm like, shut up.
- 39:21Because unless it's Olivia Benson and Elliot Stable, no ship had a longer run than motor
- 39:27and skull.
- 39:28Like for real.
- 39:29Six seasons for the kiss.
- 39:30Yeah.
- 39:31Fuck man.
- 39:32And they don't even get together after that.
- 39:34It's a New Year's kiss.
- 39:36I watch that on YouTube.
- 39:37My husband walked in and I'm like on YouTube watching like, scull, I gotta watch it like
- 39:42a skull, yeah, like skullly and moldy like kiss compilations.
- 39:46That's a good use of your time.
- 39:49I watch so many like, buffy and spike kiss compilations that it's just like, God bless
- 39:55YouTube.
- 39:56I don't know.
- 39:57I know.
- 39:58I'm like, cool.
- 39:59It's when they go to the cemetery and they're pulling out the coffin casket from the ground.
- 40:04Oh, no, I don't.
- 40:07And the autopsy guy comes and he's like, what are you doing?
- 40:11Blah, blah, blah.
- 40:13And the daughter just goes out the car.
- 40:14She said, we have to go home.
- 40:16Dad, we have to go home.
- 40:18I was like, I'm like, girl, why are you like so pressed?
- 40:22Like, why are you screaming?
- 40:23Why are you screaming?
- 40:24Just to go home.
- 40:25Just to make sure you stand there.
- 40:26Just to make sure you stand there.
- 40:29Yeah, so that part right there is my favorite part.
- 40:31Just be comfortable.
- 40:32I thought you were going to say when they dropped the coffin.
- 40:35I don't know.
- 40:36It was her getting out of the car being so dramatic.
- 40:39I'm like, she deserves an obstacle for that.
- 40:41Oh my gosh.
- 40:42That's a love it.
- 40:43That was her big break.
- 40:44She's like, I got a big accident.
- 40:46That was pretty good.
- 40:47I guess it makes sense later because she's going through shit, but yeah.
- 40:51Yeah.
- 40:52It's so fun.
- 40:53That's awesome.
- 40:54We got to go.
- 40:57He's like, I'm literally at work.
- 41:00Why aren't you?
- 41:01Get back in the car.
- 41:02Yeah.
- 41:03Oh my gosh.
- 41:04That's awesome.
- 41:06My favorite part is when they are in the rain and molder, I think it's when he first
- 41:13makes the connection to Billy Miles and he starts explaining that the woods is calling
- 41:19them and that there's some light and all this.
- 41:23But the reason it's my favorite part is because Scully finds herself joining in on the theory
- 41:31and the mystical nature of it all.
- 41:34And then they both are laughing at how ridiculous they sound.
- 41:41But I think, and I don't care what Chris Carter thinks, he's a creator of the show.
- 41:47I don't care anything.
- 41:49I'm the real.
- 41:50I think.
- 41:52I think that moment is when molder and Scully first fall for each other because they think
- 42:01they have the tingles and their pants for each other.
- 42:03Yeah.
- 42:04Okay.
- 42:05I was going to say hard, but what about you?
- 42:07Yeah.
- 42:08[laughter]
- 42:09Yeah.
- 42:10It's hard whenever.
- 42:11The difference between me and Haley summed up literally right there.
- 42:21But the tingles and her tingles at the same time.
- 42:25Fair, fair.
- 42:26Oh, yeah.
- 42:27Oh, yeah.
- 42:28But I just think he saw in her someone who was willing to take him seriously even if it's
- 42:33just for a second and go down that path with him and nobody ever took him seriously.
- 42:38And she saw in him someone who was open to this world of possibility that her whole life
- 42:45had been so closed off because she so, you know, I only believe in science.
- 42:49And so he represents this adventure.
- 42:52And I text you guys this, but it's nostalgic for me to watch it, but also what's the right
- 43:00word?
- 43:01Kind of heart-wrenching because that scene in the motel where he's telling her about his
- 43:06sister's abduction.
- 43:07Oh, yeah.
- 43:08And she's on the bed and he's on the floor.
- 43:10That scene is played again in the finale.
- 43:14And they like flip-bat.
- 43:15Now, well, she's on the bed.
- 43:19He's on the floor, but this time they're talking about he's basically saying like what was
- 43:24this all for?
- 43:25And she's saying all those years ago, what I saw in you, it made me follow you and I would
- 43:32do it all over again.
- 43:34And then he climbs in the bed and then they snuggle.
- 43:37Oh, snuggle.
- 43:38But it's so nice because it like calls for a circle because like here they are.
- 43:44And then here they end up in it so sweet.
- 43:46And it's just, I mean, I could go on and on, but like it is to me with all of its flaws, it's
- 43:56still like the greatest TV story ever told.
- 44:01Well, it's my favorite.
- 44:03Well, I think you found two new fans.
- 44:05Are you created two new fans here?
- 44:07Awesome.
- 44:08Well, that's, that was my plan was to just rope you guys into a thing that I like and then
- 44:13that's going to force you to continue to talk to me because you'll text me questions and
- 44:16be like, wait a second, what is going on?
- 44:19That was actually really wise.
- 44:20I like that.
- 44:21I like that.
- 44:22It's what I do.
- 44:23I manipulate my friends, meant to be my friends.
- 44:25They're going to stay my friend because I'm going to answer your questions about the
- 44:30thing.
- 44:31Yeah.
- 44:32All right.
- 44:33I got a day ever.
- 44:34Wait, wait, wait, I have a question.
- 44:36Okay, go.
- 44:37Do they ever do it?
- 44:41Not on camera.
- 44:43What?
- 44:44I mean, I guess is in the heavily implied.
- 44:49Here's why it's significant.
- 44:50Season seven, episode 17, it's called All Things and the reason I'm telling you is because
- 44:56a lot of fans on our initial viewing, we like, it's like a blink and you miss it kind
- 45:01of thing.
- 45:02But that episode was written and directed by Jillian Anderson.
- 45:05Yeah.
