- 0:00Speaker 1: Uh.
- 0:00Speaker 2: First of all, I want to thank this guy for
- 0:02Speaker 2: coming in, because I feel like anytime we've tried to
- 0:04Speaker 2: catch up with him over the last few years, it's
- 0:06Speaker 2: like zoom call in, but he has made time to
- 0:10Speaker 2: come hang with us.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Chris Young is in the studio.
- 0:13Speaker 3: What's up. I'm happy to be back in the studio. Man,
- 0:15Speaker 3: it's weird. No, it's awesome. I just tipped the band
- 0:19Speaker 3: that's playing out. Yeah. The guy was very confused. He
- 0:23Speaker 3: thought I was lost because I went to This is
- 0:27Speaker 3: probably not how you wanted to start the interview, but
- 0:29Speaker 3: I went to the bathroom that's out this way and
- 0:32Speaker 3: there's a couple of guys up on stage playing, and
- 0:34Speaker 3: so I just walked over and kept them and he
- 0:36Speaker 3: was like, oh, He's like, I didn't know what you
- 0:38Speaker 3: were doing. I was like, yeah, man, I've done that
- 0:41Speaker 3: a lot.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Did he even realize that you were Chris Young?
- 0:45Speaker 3: He was he's with the security friend house. Oh yeah.
- 0:47Speaker 3: So I think he just thought I was confused because
- 0:50Speaker 3: I was like, no, it's this way. You're a musician,
- 0:52Speaker 3: you're up early. You don't know where you are? Yeah, no,
- 0:56Speaker 3: what is early for you? That's that's a good question.
- 1:02Speaker 3: This year has been so all over the place in
- 1:04Speaker 3: the best way possible, but like launching Young Love and
- 1:07Speaker 3: Saturday Nights like the album, not just the single. We
- 1:11Speaker 3: were in Australia while I was doing that, and then
- 1:13Speaker 3: I came back. I was in California. This is gonna
- 1:16Speaker 3: make me sound like an old man, but I threw
- 1:18Speaker 3: my back out for the first time in my life.
- 1:19Speaker 3: I had to sit down for three shows. Then I
- 1:22Speaker 3: was in Nashville, then New York, then Nashville and Texas,
- 1:25Speaker 3: then Nashville. It's like we've been everywhere in different time zones.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Oh, you're gonna blame the time. So I'm going to
- 1:31Speaker 1: bed before nine o'clock.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Go ahead, Oh dude, I have thousand Dude. Last night,
- 1:36Speaker 3: I one thousand percent went to bed at nine thirty
- 1:38Speaker 3: as you should, and got up at six and let
- 1:40Speaker 3: my dog out because he was staring at me like
- 1:42Speaker 3: this one hundred and fifteen pounds German shepherd stares at you.
- 1:45Speaker 3: He's that close to your face, he's got that much teeth.
- 1:48Speaker 3: You're like, okay, you can go out to you.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Yeah, take about what's that been like? Because that I
- 1:52Speaker 2: don't want to say it's new for you in your
- 1:54Speaker 2: career to be you know, over here, over here, over here.
- 1:56Speaker 2: But at the same time, you are at a level
- 1:58Speaker 2: in your career where like you can can't just promote
- 2:00Speaker 2: an album in Nashville anymore, you don't just do shows,
- 2:04Speaker 2: you know, from New York to la like you literally
- 2:07Speaker 2: have become I feel like, more so over the last
- 2:11Speaker 2: like five years, you've become I don't want to say
- 2:14Speaker 2: bigger than that, but for the lack of a better phrase,
- 2:17Speaker 2: like your career has hit a whole new level in
- 2:19Speaker 2: the last five years.
- 2:20Speaker 3: No, man, I'm incredibly grateful for that. I'm grateful for
- 2:24Speaker 3: the opportunity. And you know, people might think I'm just
- 2:28Speaker 3: full of it when I'm on stage because I say
- 2:30Speaker 3: thank you as much as I can throughout the show.
- 2:32Speaker 3: But they don't want to listen to my music anymore,
- 2:36Speaker 3: they don't want to come see the show. Then it
- 2:37Speaker 3: doesn't matter. So I can sit in my studio and
- 2:41Speaker 3: make music as much as I want. But you know,
- 2:45Speaker 3: all the tools in the world and the guitars in
- 2:48Speaker 3: the world aren't going to make a difference when people
- 2:49Speaker 3: don't want to hear it. So it's it's awesome. I'll
- 2:52Speaker 3: take the good with the bad because there's always everybody
- 2:57Speaker 3: always goes, no, this is I'm living my dream, and
- 2:59Speaker 3: I am. There's still stuff that you don't want to do. Yeah. Yeah,
- 3:07Speaker 3: there are times when they're like, hey, you got to
- 3:08Speaker 3: get up at four in the morning after you flew
- 3:10Speaker 3: in at eleven, And I'm like, that doesn't sound fun
- 3:14Speaker 3: at all. But you know, I've also done HVAC before,
- 3:20Speaker 3: and I would rather not be in a hot addict.
- 3:22Speaker 3: So shout out to all the HVAC people out there,
- 3:24Speaker 3: We love you.
- 3:26Speaker 1: That would that be the plan if music didn't work out,
- 3:29Speaker 1: you just be.
- 3:29Speaker 3: That's what I was doing before. I was doing construction
- 3:32Speaker 3: and climbing up in people's attics, putting you know, going
- 3:36Speaker 3: now that your condenser?
- 3:39Speaker 1: Could you still do it today? Like would you do
- 3:41Speaker 1: you fix your own HS?
- 3:42Speaker 2: Back?
- 3:42Speaker 3: I can fix a certain amount, I would say, And
- 3:47Speaker 3: my boss would say the same thing from back then
- 3:50Speaker 3: because I still know him and keep in touch with him.
- 3:52Speaker 3: But he would he would probably tell you, uh, I'm
- 3:58Speaker 3: you know, a big dude, like he's like he can
- 4:01Speaker 3: pick everything up. I don't know about the intricacies of
- 4:05Speaker 3: some of the parts of it. Uh. So let me
- 4:08Speaker 3: put it this way. It's a good thing. I'm putting
- 4:10Speaker 3: music into people's houses and not HVAC units. Got it
- 4:13Speaker 3: all right, So he wouldn't rehire you. What you're saying,
- 4:16Speaker 3: probably not?
- 4:17Speaker 1: Probably you are and you wear it on your sleeve.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Man. You are a big sports guy, obviously specifically Texas sports.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Uh you.
- 4:25Speaker 2: It's funny because your team is similar to mine where
- 4:28Speaker 2: they haven't done much in a while, but you still like,
- 4:30Speaker 2: I'm a Minnesota Vikings guy and this time of the year.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Let me ask you a question. It just hypothetically is
- 4:35Speaker 3: a Minnesota Vikings fan? Yeah?
- 4:37Speaker 1: J J McCarthy.
- 4:38Speaker 3: So where did where did you guys?
- 4:40Speaker 2: Uh?
- 4:41Speaker 3: Did you win your division?
- 4:42Speaker 1: Is that what we're doing?
- 4:43Speaker 3: Did you win your division last year? No? Weird, we did?
- 4:48Speaker 1: Is this what we're gonna do?
- 4:49Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 4:49Speaker 2: You started, But in ninety one the Minnesota Twins won
- 4:54Speaker 2: the World Series.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Okay, and we're still hanging on to that one.
- 4:57Speaker 3: Well, and the last year the EXUS Rangers one the
- 5:01Speaker 3: World Series and I've got a ring on.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Uh you are?
- 5:06Speaker 2: You are a big sports guy, and this is an
- 5:08Speaker 2: exciting time of year, especially for somebody who loves football.
- 5:12Speaker 2: I'm the first question I'm gonna ask before I dive
- 5:14Speaker 2: into more, is are you're a fantasy football guy?
- 5:17Speaker 3: So we have multiple fantasy football leagues. I did win
- 5:20Speaker 3: one of my leagues last year. So the belt is
- 5:23Speaker 3: getting passed to me. On my podcast that I do
- 5:27Speaker 3: where we talk about sports. It's called The Quad with
- 5:30Speaker 3: Chris Young if anybody wants to check it out. But
- 5:33Speaker 3: it uh, it is a big deal for us because
- 5:39Speaker 3: we all like act like we're not really invested, but
- 5:43Speaker 3: we're really invested. And like Nate Smith played with us
- 5:47Speaker 3: last year. He was in in the league and he
- 5:49Speaker 3: had no clue what he was doing awesome, and he's
- 5:53Speaker 3: just like, dude, I don't know what I'm doing. I'm like,
- 5:54Speaker 3: this is not the point. We just we want you
- 5:57Speaker 3: to join and see if you like it, because I
- 5:59Speaker 3: didn't know what I was doing the first year I played.
- 6:01Speaker 3: And it was Blake Shelton that made me play my
- 6:04Speaker 3: first year and he was like, here's a piece of
- 6:08Speaker 3: this is like still on paper with a pen, like
- 6:10Speaker 3: writing out everybody who drafted who, And so I love it.
- 6:16Speaker 3: I love that aspect of it. And you know, I've
- 6:18Speaker 3: been lucky enough to get to know you know, Dak
- 6:21Speaker 3: Prescott and hang out with him, go fishing with him
- 6:26Speaker 3: down in Louisiana and that's not his brother. Tad is amazing,
- 6:31Speaker 3: and yeah, it's it's a wild thing to grow up here.
- 6:38Speaker 3: And everybody's like, whyren't you a Titans fan? I was like,
- 6:40Speaker 3: you have to understand, I'm thirty nine years old, Like,
- 6:42Speaker 3: we didn't have the Titans when I was a kid.
- 6:45Speaker 3: That was the team that I watched, and that was
- 6:48Speaker 3: when they were win in all the Super Bowls. So
- 6:53Speaker 3: I'm not going to say I cursed them, but they
- 6:55Speaker 3: they haven't been great. This is in the postseason since then.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Fine, this year turns it around, I hope. So I'm
- 7:02Speaker 2: telling you, this is gonna be a good year for Dallas.
- 7:05Speaker 3: You know what, God willing In the next couple of years,
- 7:09Speaker 3: there's a Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl win and Minnesota Vikings
- 7:14Speaker 3: Super Bowl, and then we can sit here and.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Look about it, right, and then I'll bring you in
- 7:18Speaker 2: and we'll do the podcast from here.
- 7:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:21Speaker 1: How many leagues do you play in for Fantasy?
- 7:23Speaker 3: I limit myself to three.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Oh see, I at one point I tried to do
- 7:28Speaker 2: like everybody asking, I'm like, I'm in, I'm in, I'm in,
- 7:31Speaker 2: and It's just it was a horrible mistake and I
- 7:33Speaker 2: botched every one I was in.
- 7:35Speaker 3: So there's a there's a Sony League allegedly, uh, there's
- 7:44Speaker 3: my podcast league. And then I've got one more that
- 7:49Speaker 3: I'm involved in that's like a whole bunch of artists
- 7:53Speaker 3: that we just see who wants to play that year. Basically,
- 7:58Speaker 3: Mitchell Tinpenny, I'm your I'm still on. I can't say
- 8:02Speaker 3: the words that I want to say, You're You're on
- 8:05Speaker 3: my list about people that needs to play in the
- 8:09Speaker 3: league because he's always like, oh, I'm already in like four,
- 8:13Speaker 3: and I'm like, there's no way you're already in four.
- 8:16Speaker 3: If I'm texting you before preseason started, ye, like it's no.
- 8:20Speaker 3: So yeah, Mitchell and me got minor beef. Last thing.
- 8:26Speaker 2: I'm gonna ask you about that and then we'll talk
- 8:27Speaker 2: music because I hear you're an artist as well.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Yeah, that's crazy. He's a singer.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Guys, who is And you don't have to answer if
- 8:35Speaker 2: you don't want who is the biggest name that is
- 8:38Speaker 2: the worst at fantasy football?
- 8:42Speaker 3: It might be Nate. I'm sorry, buddy.
- 8:46Speaker 1: I'm sorry, sorry, Sorry, Nate Smith.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Please continue to sing with me when we play shows together.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Watch him no show the next one.
- 8:56Speaker 3: Well, that was one time he was I was like,
- 8:59Speaker 3: you do famous friends and come out at the end
- 9:01Speaker 3: of my show. I know it's after years. I don't
- 9:03Speaker 3: know if you're leaving. He goes, oh, yeah, I'll do it.
- 9:05Speaker 3: He goes, can I get the lyrics? I'm like, yeah,
- 9:09Speaker 3: of course. I was like, I'm asking you right before
- 9:12Speaker 3: you go on stage, Like, yeah, it's not a big deal.
- 9:15Speaker 3: But he is such an incredible singer, such a nice dude,
- 9:18Speaker 3: and like all of the success he's had, he's somebody
- 9:23Speaker 3: I just really root for. I mean, there's so many
- 9:26Speaker 3: artists that I've gotten a chance to know, and yeah,
- 9:30Speaker 3: we all compete against each other, right, But at the
- 9:33Speaker 3: same time, it's like, I mean, even Drew Baldridge yep,
- 9:38Speaker 3: having this massive success that he's having, you know, doing
- 9:44Speaker 3: it on his own is just so cool and you
- 9:47Speaker 3: got to you gotta root for everybody else too.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Well, we're rooting for you because you were on the
- 9:53Speaker 2: version of doing something pretty special. You have had nominations,
- 9:57Speaker 2: you have had you like, hang on, don't say I'm
- 9:59Speaker 2: not gonna don't you it, don't me what does at
- 10:02Speaker 2: this point in your career you are far past the
- 10:05Speaker 2: word established. But a number one song still means what
- 10:09Speaker 2: to you as an artist and a songwriter.
- 10:11Speaker 3: It means the world. Man. I grew up as a
- 10:15Speaker 3: kid listening to records with my grandfather and listening to
- 10:21Speaker 3: the radio with my mom in the car in the
- 10:24Speaker 3: back seat as a kid and hearing you know, countdowns say,
- 10:32Speaker 3: all right, this week at number one in the country
- 10:34Speaker 3: is blank and if you ever get tired of that,
- 10:39Speaker 3: you should probably quit. That is still a pinnacle to me,
- 10:50Speaker 3: even after you've had one, even after you've had ten whatever.
- 10:57Speaker 3: I mean, George strait is the wrated every single one,
- 11:00Speaker 3: he said. And I think there's something intrinsically special about
- 11:06Speaker 3: that as an artist, as a songwriter, as a producer,
- 11:10Speaker 3: when you get to go there's nothing above me but letterhead. Hey,
- 11:16Speaker 3: that's big, and you know, hopefully we can do it
- 11:20Speaker 3: this one because David Bowie is a songwriter on this obviously.
- 11:26Speaker 3: The one really funny thing was when we put it out,
- 11:30Speaker 3: a lot of people were like, oh my god, that's
- 11:32Speaker 3: so cool that you used the lick from Rebel Rebel
- 11:36Speaker 3: and create a new song. And you know, people don't
- 11:39Speaker 3: dig as much as they used to, Like, you don't
- 11:41Speaker 3: see liner notes anymore as much as you used to.
- 11:44Speaker 3: You don't know what's going on. And there were some
- 11:46Speaker 3: people that were like the majority of people were like,
- 11:49Speaker 3: this is so cool. Then there were some people that
- 11:52Speaker 3: were like, oh my god, you stole David Bowie's song,
- 11:57Speaker 3: and I was like, I didn't write it. Also, he's
- 12:01Speaker 3: listed as a songwriter because they bought the catalog and
- 12:04Speaker 3: that was intentional, Like that was the whole point. And
- 12:08Speaker 3: then there was one comment that made me laugh so
- 12:11Speaker 3: hard because somebody was like, oh, I love the Rolling Stones,
- 12:16Speaker 3: and I was just like swinging a miss. That was yeah,
- 12:21Speaker 3: top on Google.
- 12:22Speaker 1: I learned something Young Love and Saturday Nights.
- 12:25Speaker 2: When you listen to the album obviously self titled single
- 12:28Speaker 2: off of that album, it feels special, not more special
- 12:32Speaker 2: than the rest of the record, but like it definitely
- 12:34Speaker 2: as a country music fan, it raised its hand.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Was that the same for you?
- 12:39Speaker 2: Like, was this easy to pick not only the title
- 12:41Speaker 2: of the album but the first single, so.
- 12:44Speaker 3: It's the second single technically, but Young Love and Saturday
- 12:50Speaker 3: Nights was something that I listened to sitting in a
- 12:52Speaker 3: room probably the size of this and we'd already had
- 12:58Speaker 3: Looking for You out on the radio. And the minute
- 13:01Speaker 3: that I recorded this and produced it and turned it in,
- 13:06Speaker 3: everybody was like okay, and I think you put it perfectly.
- 13:10Speaker 3: It raised its hand, it was like this is special,
- 13:14Speaker 3: and I was like, man, I gotta I gotta get
- 13:18Speaker 3: this out. I gotta put this out. I wanted to
- 13:20Speaker 3: be the summer song for the record, and it's been
- 13:25Speaker 3: so cool watching it climb the chart and hearing from
- 13:29Speaker 3: everybody about how much they love it. And now, especially
- 13:32Speaker 3: in the past like two and a half three months,
- 13:36Speaker 3: you can see it in the crowd. Yeah, the lick starts,
- 13:40Speaker 3: everybody loses their minds. It's it's perfect. I love it.
- 13:44Speaker 2: That's gotta be the best feeling, too, like working a song,
- 13:47Speaker 2: putting your heart into it, you know, watching it grow
- 13:49Speaker 2: up country radio and streaming, and then once that crowd
- 13:52Speaker 2: reacts to it, though, that's got to be like the
- 13:55Speaker 2: seal to the whole thing.
- 13:56Speaker 3: I can tell you the difference between now and when
- 14:00Speaker 3: we first put it out. So when we first put
- 14:02Speaker 3: it out had this really cool video concept. I love
- 14:05Speaker 3: the video. It's probably one of my favorite videos I've
- 14:07Speaker 3: ever made. So if you haven't seen that, go check
- 14:09Speaker 3: the video out. But I was playing a show with Lee,
- 14:19Speaker 3: Brice and Houser for a radio station, and we were
- 14:24Speaker 3: all just like trying out sing out because we all
- 14:29Speaker 3: know each other, and we're like cracking jokes behind the
- 14:32Speaker 3: other person that's singing while they're playing whatever song they're doing.
- 14:35Speaker 3: We're like, I almost step it up on this next one,
- 14:38Speaker 3: Like we're just like goofing off with each other. And
- 14:42Speaker 3: I played Young Love and Saturday Nights and it was
- 14:44Speaker 3: before anyone knew it, and I was like, Man, I
- 14:47Speaker 3: hate that more people haven't heard this because I feel
- 14:51Speaker 3: like I'm like pushing on that one. Like all the
- 14:54Speaker 3: other songs that I played are songs that people have
- 14:56Speaker 3: known and put on the radio. And so seeing the
- 14:58Speaker 3: difference in that reaction at the beginning of that song
- 15:02Speaker 3: to now when I'm standing in an arena full of
- 15:04Speaker 3: people and everyone is singing the words to it is magic.
- 15:10Speaker 3: It's the only way to describe it.
- 15:12Speaker 1: That's so awesome.
- 15:12Speaker 3: Man.
- 15:13Speaker 2: Last thing I want to ask you so I can
- 15:14Speaker 2: clip this for social You are a champion now when
- 15:18Speaker 2: it comes to fantasy football, so I'm going to ask
- 15:21Speaker 2: you for It's the second time I've wont it sorry.
- 15:25Speaker 2: Two time Fantasy football team time, one hundred teams, two championships.
- 15:29Speaker 2: It's fine, We're not counting teams.
- 15:33Speaker 3: Sorry.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Two time Fantasy football champion Chris Young, who is a
- 15:36Speaker 2: sleeper pick for somebody to look for in a fantasy
- 15:39Speaker 2: football draft this year.
- 15:41Speaker 3: I think bo Nicks is going to be Offensive player
- 15:44Speaker 3: of the Year. Really, I'm telling you, I know all
- 15:49Speaker 3: the attention is on the Bears and having that pick.
- 15:57Speaker 3: I just think unfortunately for Russell Wilson, he experienced his
- 16:03Speaker 3: decline going to a new team. I think Bo Nicks
- 16:07Speaker 3: with the way that he plays, even even though it
- 16:10Speaker 3: was preseason, there's like a couple of things that he did.
- 16:13Speaker 3: He's very accurate, even when it was down to the
- 16:18Speaker 3: short plays. There's a play he did if people weren't
- 16:20Speaker 3: watching that game, where he like literally lobs it over
- 16:23Speaker 3: the line to the running back who like leaks out.
- 16:29Speaker 3: I think it was running back. It might have been
- 16:31Speaker 3: a tight end, but forgive me on that part. But
- 16:35Speaker 3: he literally just does this almost Brett Farv esque trick
- 16:39Speaker 3: play where he just like threw it over like clime. Yeah,
- 16:43Speaker 3: and I think he sees the field the way Peyton
- 16:46Speaker 3: wants someone to see it. YEP. I think bo Nicks
- 16:50Speaker 3: is going to be the sleeper.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Pick him up, y'all.
- 16:53Speaker 3: Now you know Curtis and I mean, don't go early,
- 16:57Speaker 3: early rounds on him, but you get late rounds, you're
- 17:01Speaker 3: looking for another quarterback.
- 17:04Speaker 1: Hid this clip from your friends. Your sleeper pick. Courtesy
- 17:06Speaker 1: of Chris Young. Thanks Man, Thanks Maun
