- 0:55Speaker 2: Well, there you go.
- 0:56Speaker 1: We try to give the best content when we put
- 0:59Speaker 1: this together.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Absolutely all right, guys, let's talk about our podcast yesterday,
- 1:05Speaker 3: Ryan Pagano, how we I was saying, well, there's so
- 1:09Speaker 3: many teams competing for this third wild card.
- 1:11Speaker 2: It's not usually like this, and we all made points.
- 1:14Speaker 2: But Lou you wanted to, I don't know, push back somewhere,
- 1:17Speaker 2: but you had some disagreements or what we said yesterday,
- 1:20Speaker 2: go for it. Let let's stir it up a bit.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Well. I listened to your entire podcasts and it was great.
- 1:28Speaker 1: The conversation was great. There was a couple of things,
- 1:30Speaker 1: I definitely, I mean it was more like wishful thinking
- 1:35Speaker 1: I think on your part. And let's go right. Let's
- 1:37Speaker 1: go right to the heart case. The New York Mets
- 1:41Speaker 1: after training eight players are nowhere near in any kind
- 1:45Speaker 1: of exciting times as they end this season. If they
- 1:48Speaker 1: get to within five games of five hundred, they should,
- 1:52Speaker 1: they should get the Canyon of Heroes because they're going
- 1:55Speaker 1: nowhere and it's all about next year. And I know
- 1:58Speaker 1: you guys are trying to pump off the lane. Six
- 2:00Speaker 1: weeks the last week six weeks.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Yeah, turned around where they went from lifeless to literally
- 2:06Speaker 2: scoring almost eight ten runs a game is very fascinating
- 2:10Speaker 2: to watch. I know, it may not lay to anything,
- 2:11Speaker 2: but still it is kind of exciting. Even as Ryan
- 2:14Speaker 2: was saying for twenty twenty seven build up, you know.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Yes, and I definitely agree with that. To the twenty
- 2:20Speaker 1: twenty seven build up. Obviously, the Mets do have some
- 2:24Speaker 1: young guys that are going to be mainstays for years
- 2:26Speaker 1: to come in in Ewing who's been terrific, and Bench
- 2:32Speaker 1: who's been terrific, and this hope with the pitchers obviously McClain,
- 2:37Speaker 1: Christian Scott coming off, Tommy John still has to there's
- 2:42Speaker 1: still a little rough edges of there, but he's going
- 2:44Speaker 1: to be in rotation next year. He's got terrific stuff. Thornton,
- 2:49Speaker 1: I mean that came out of nowhere, and unfortunately they
- 2:53Speaker 1: got to straighten out joanah Tong and he's he's had
- 2:56Speaker 1: a bad year. And again, guys, this could be his owner.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Tom could be hurt in this year because they brought
- 3:04Speaker 1: him up when so many guys were hurt down the
- 3:06Speaker 1: stretch last year and they were trying to get into
- 3:08Speaker 1: the playoffs, and that might have screwed him up. He
- 3:11Speaker 1: probably wasn't ready to come up. And again I have
- 3:14Speaker 1: no idea if that affected them or not, but they
- 3:17Speaker 1: got to straighten them out. He's only twenty one years old,
- 3:20Speaker 1: and you know he might be on the roster next year.
- 3:25Speaker 1: They got to get they got to get a horse.
- 3:29Speaker 1: You know, they thought that Parolta could have been that,
- 3:32Speaker 1: but again he he just had a bad year. And
- 3:35Speaker 1: but again, who could have gotten rid of they got
- 3:38Speaker 1: rid of David Peterson's pitched very well for the Cubs. Parolta,
- 3:42Speaker 1: who hasn't pitched well in his first who starts with
- 3:45Speaker 1: Tampa Bay, but he's had a you know, he's had
- 3:47Speaker 1: a very good track record. And they traded their best pitcher,
- 3:51Speaker 1: Clay Holmes, who did not have a good first start,
- 3:55Speaker 1: but I think he's going to help the Cubs. And
- 3:57Speaker 1: they traded their foremost effective relief pitchers and their closer
- 4:02Speaker 1: who's been okay, he hasn't been terrible, he hasn't been great.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Is is on the disabled list. They're playing without Soto,
- 4:10Speaker 1: you know, their best player. So I mean, I'm not
- 4:13Speaker 1: saying that it's all doom and gloom, but this season,
- 4:17Speaker 1: let's just watch these young guys. Hopefully they continue to
- 4:21Speaker 1: play and learn so next year they're already.
- 4:25Speaker 2: I hope they don't get injured at all, and from
- 4:27Speaker 2: this time to now, I think there's another thing there.
- 4:29Speaker 1: So that that is true. You do not want to
- 4:31Speaker 1: see them get injured. And you know with a calf injury.
- 4:35Speaker 1: You know Soto's had that calf injury since Game twelve.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Remember Game twelve is what started the twelve game losing streak,
- 4:42Speaker 1: and he didn't play in any of them. And those
- 4:44Speaker 1: calf injuries and we've seen it in other sports sometimes
- 4:46Speaker 1: lead to ten to achilles ten in issues Again, would
- 4:51Speaker 1: I like to see him back September first? Last night
- 4:54Speaker 1: in the Mets telecast, they said he might be back
- 4:56Speaker 1: around September first, first week of September. I don't know
- 4:59Speaker 1: if it's if it's worth it bringing them back.
- 5:03Speaker 4: I mean, I don't like it's just the ewing effect
- 5:06Speaker 4: in full force. Lou You're just.
- 5:08Speaker 5: Seeing right now in front of your own eyes that somehow,
- 5:12Speaker 5: magically the Mets are surprisingly looking better without their seven
- 5:17Speaker 5: hundred and sixty five million dollar franchise. Peace, I mean,
- 5:22Speaker 5: just try to make it make sense. But then again,
- 5:25Speaker 5: I also can't help but wonder, Okay, if he does
- 5:28Speaker 5: come back and the Mets get closer to five hundred.
- 5:32Speaker 4: Then what which are they still going to have that
- 5:33Speaker 4: same amount of success.
- 5:34Speaker 5: I really don't know how they're going to be in September,
- 5:37Speaker 5: assuming that he comes back, and assuming that maybe somebody
- 5:42Speaker 5: like Jonah tong as you mentioned just a couple of
- 5:44Speaker 5: minutes ago, Lou could perhaps be a September call up.
- 5:47Speaker 5: And I do agree with you one hundred percent about
- 5:50Speaker 5: Jonah Tongue that they rushed him up, and clearly you're
- 5:54Speaker 5: seeing those negative side effects here this season with how
- 6:00Speaker 5: horrible he's been in Triple A. There's no other way
- 6:02Speaker 5: I can really put that. And even as limited appearances
- 6:05Speaker 5: in the Bigs have left a ton to be desired,
- 6:09Speaker 5: almost to the point where you can't help but wonder
- 6:10Speaker 5: if last offseason should he have been traded instead of
- 6:14Speaker 5: Brandon Sprot. And I mean it's Sprot. He's not doing
- 6:17Speaker 5: that much better in Milwaukee. But you got to entertain
- 6:21Speaker 5: those questions one way or another year.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Yeah, no, you're right. And the thing is, everybody asked
- 6:26Speaker 1: for Tongue first this offseason, Oh.
- 6:29Speaker 5: No question, and everybody at the time too. If we're
- 6:32Speaker 5: gonna play a little bit the Devil's advocate here, everybody
- 6:35Speaker 5: preferred for Jonah tong to stay instead of Brandon sprot At,
- 6:39Speaker 5: a potential Freddie Peralta trade. So there's no denying that
- 6:41Speaker 5: everybody wanted Sproke excuse me tongue to stay put, and
- 6:46Speaker 5: I would have to, you know, but it's really a
- 6:50Speaker 5: matter now of him needing more seasoning in the minor leagues.
- 6:56Speaker 5: Before we even entertained the thought of him becoming a
- 6:58Speaker 5: key piece to a future rotation.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Well, they're put there. They're rushing these guys up. He's
- 7:03Speaker 1: twenty he's still twenty one years old, so so we'll
- 7:07Speaker 1: we'll see what happens. But if they trade him this offseason,
- 7:09Speaker 1: that'll be interesting. I don't think they will, but they
- 7:13Speaker 1: have to get a horse and uh to anchor this,
- 7:17Speaker 1: and McClain is a potential horse. But again, he's finishing
- 7:21Speaker 1: his roop. Technically, this is still his rookie year. He
- 7:25Speaker 1: was eligible for the Rookie of the Year, and it's
- 7:27Speaker 1: going to be interesting to see who gets Rookie the
- 7:29Speaker 1: Year International League is Ben's going to get it. You know,
- 7:33Speaker 1: he's been terrific and uh, you know, watching a j
- 7:37Speaker 1: Ewing play center field and making these circus catches one
- 7:41Speaker 1: night after another. I mean, the kid and I saw
- 7:44Speaker 1: the kid in spring training when I went down there,
- 7:47Speaker 1: and you know, you see guys and they all look
- 7:50Speaker 1: the same, whether they're the veterans or the or the
- 7:54Speaker 1: the youngsters. He stood out and I was there with
- 7:57Speaker 1: my brother. I said, I went, how far from the
- 8:00Speaker 1: major leagues?
- 8:01Speaker 2: Louis you mentioned Ewing's excellent outfielding. I saw Ben's fielding right,
- 8:06Speaker 2: and I've seen him in center a little bit. That
- 8:08Speaker 2: kid's got a good future in the outfield as well.
- 8:10Speaker 4: And look even a damn good arm at that.
- 8:13Speaker 5: I mean, we've seen him nail a couple runners at
- 8:15Speaker 5: home here and there.
- 8:16Speaker 4: And his fielding, it.
- 8:18Speaker 5: Just hasn't been talked about because everybody's talking about how
- 8:21Speaker 5: good is bad as Alex, But then his fielding, I'm
- 8:25Speaker 5: very glad you brought that up here because his fielding
- 8:28Speaker 5: very very underrated in my opinion.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Well, it's gotten better since the beginning of the year.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Remember against Detroit he dropped that fly ball, and he
- 8:37Speaker 1: did and he misjudged a couple of the fly balls.
- 8:42Speaker 1: The way I like about the kid is he has
- 8:44Speaker 1: gotten better as his rookie year has gone on. And
- 8:46Speaker 1: remember in May he was really struggling and I thought
- 8:50Speaker 1: they might have to send him down, and it looks
- 8:53Speaker 1: like he's a keeper and Ryan he does. You're right,
- 8:57Speaker 1: he has a howitzer for a right arm. So it's
- 9:02Speaker 1: interesting today.
- 9:04Speaker 2: And also, you know the Lindor resurgence heading a couple
- 9:07Speaker 2: of homers here after the trade headline. We've been talking
- 9:10Speaker 2: about this yesterday. Yeah, Alta intervened with that Sodo Lindor relationship, and.
- 9:14Speaker 5: If I could just interrupt real quick, I'm glad you
- 9:16Speaker 5: brought up Lindor. If I could just bring this up
- 9:19Speaker 5: as well, that Lindor. Now, since our last conversation, Alex,
- 9:24Speaker 5: he's gone on the record talking about Steve, Steve Cohen
- 9:29Speaker 5: and David Stearn's approach moving forward for twenty twenty seven
- 9:33Speaker 5: and really answering a lot of questions about whether or
- 9:35Speaker 5: not he wants to actually remain a met and all that. So,
- 9:40Speaker 5: and this was in a conversation, by the way, with
- 9:42Speaker 5: Mike Puma the New York Post, and he basically just
- 9:46Speaker 5: went out to say that they have the right guys,
- 9:48Speaker 5: that Stearns is the right guy.
- 9:51Speaker 4: Cohen is one of the.
- 9:51Speaker 5: Best owners in sports history because he's always going to
- 9:54Speaker 5: put He's always gonna go with the energy that needs
- 9:57Speaker 5: to be put into the team. When you're in such
- 9:59Speaker 5: a big market, there isn't a thing is rebuilding a
- 10:02Speaker 5: little bit of transition, that's it. You can't afford to
- 10:05Speaker 5: rebuild in big markets. So I think we have not
- 10:08Speaker 5: taken a step backwards. So Lindor here clearly defending Cohen,
- 10:14Speaker 5: clearly defending Stearns for just.
- 10:18Speaker 4: This very horrible season, all the way to around it.
- 10:21Speaker 5: But I'm very curious both of your thoughts really about
- 10:26Speaker 5: this whole Lindor quote, And do you think he's right or.
- 10:29Speaker 4: And he being the wrong?
- 10:31Speaker 2: Is he calling Colin the grades owner in history because
- 10:33Speaker 2: he gave him all that money? I wonder if that that.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Well, again, he gave him all that money, right, but
- 10:38Speaker 1: now that his contract is tradeable, his contract isn't untradeable.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Thirty four million year. I know that's ridiculous. It sounds
- 10:45Speaker 1: like it's nothing. But when he signed it five years ago,
- 10:49Speaker 1: that was a big, big contract. Now, I mean, let's.
- 10:54Speaker 4: Say potatoes in comparison to yeah contract he gave up soccer.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Yeah, well so, but so it is the player sosh,
- 11:01Speaker 1: No quite one of the top Yeah, he's one of
- 11:03Speaker 1: the top three hitters in baseball and h you know
- 11:08Speaker 1: the one thing about and Alex knows this. There was
- 11:12Speaker 1: no bigger Lindor critic critic than me. But you got
- 11:18Speaker 1: to cut the guy slack like. And Alex and I
- 11:21Speaker 1: have talked about it. He broke his wrist just before
- 11:25Speaker 1: spring training. He had the hammock bar and he came
- 11:30Speaker 1: back within in five weeks. Then twenty games into the
- 11:34Speaker 1: season he has a calf muscle. He misses fifty seven games.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Can't play without these guys, and that affects you. I
- 11:42Speaker 1: don't care. He can't be one hundred percent. He just
- 11:45Speaker 1: can't be. But my other question is are they going
- 11:48Speaker 1: to find a better shortstop than Lindor next year?
- 11:53Speaker 5: I don't think so, because realistically, who else would be
- 11:56Speaker 5: able to fill in right now? If Lindor just suddenly
- 11:59Speaker 5: got traded today, who realistically could fill that hole at shortstop?
- 12:04Speaker 5: I mean, yes, I mean he's played shortstop before his
- 12:07Speaker 5: transition to second base when he joined the Blue Jays
- 12:09Speaker 5: in twenty one. But do you really trust him at
- 12:12Speaker 5: this point as a major league quality shortstop?
- 12:14Speaker 4: I really don't know about that.
- 12:16Speaker 5: Not to mention it, I don't trust, you know, And
- 12:20Speaker 5: Mitch Voyd especially, He's looking great in the minors, don't
- 12:22Speaker 5: get me wrong.
- 12:23Speaker 4: Is he big league ready though not yet, not yet.
- 12:27Speaker 4: His time will come eventually, though, but they.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Don't way they just I know, they just promoted him
- 12:32Speaker 1: to Binghamton. And I know these guys look at you,
- 12:35Speaker 1: knowing last year he was in he was in a
- 12:37Speaker 1: ball and now he's doing a great job with the Mets.
- 12:41Speaker 1: So these guys do progress faster than twenty five years
- 12:45Speaker 1: ago through the minor league system. But yeah, the Mets,
- 12:52Speaker 1: I don't know. Voy is the future second baseman and
- 12:55Speaker 1: as early as next year they might have to eat
- 12:57Speaker 1: the Simeon contract.
- 13:00Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, especially if he approaches that twenty twenty
- 13:03Speaker 5: two Robinson Cano territory just next year of being unhittable
- 13:06Speaker 5: and basically unplayable, then we very much could be talking
- 13:10Speaker 5: about a potential buyout here.
- 13:12Speaker 4: But it seems like as of now, from what from the.
- 13:15Speaker 5: Types of quotes that Steve Cohen has given the press
- 13:18Speaker 5: and the fans about his future approach, it really doesn't
- 13:22Speaker 5: seem like he wants to buy out any of these contracts.
- 13:24Speaker 4: Yeah, a complete opposite approach of.
- 13:26Speaker 5: Twenty two and twenty three where he was more than
- 13:28Speaker 5: willing to eat salary if it meant getting some better pieces.
- 13:31Speaker 4: Right down the line. But well, that's the exact opposite
- 13:35Speaker 4: now it is.
- 13:37Speaker 1: And I'm sure even though he wasn't officially a Met
- 13:39Speaker 1: employee at that time, and everything that happened at the
- 13:43Speaker 1: end of twenty three, trading Verlander, trading Shurzer, and remember
- 13:48Speaker 1: the Met's wronging like five games out the trade deadline,
- 13:51Speaker 1: that was all I'm sure David Stearns was in his
- 13:55Speaker 1: ear getting rid of Show Walter. That was all David Sterns,
- 14:00Speaker 1: even though he wasn't officially a Met employee. Everybody knew
- 14:03Speaker 1: that last year when he was still under contract with
- 14:06Speaker 1: Milwaukee but was just a consultant or just collecting paychecks,
- 14:11Speaker 1: that that he was going to be the Mets Baseball
- 14:14Speaker 1: president of operations. So again, I don't know. I mean,
- 14:21Speaker 1: you know, Simeon plays hard, he's a pro, but and.
- 14:25Speaker 4: He knows what it takes to to win a World Series.
- 14:27Speaker 5: I mean, being one of the key pieces on the
- 14:29Speaker 5: twenty twenty three World champion Rangers will most certainly help
- 14:32Speaker 5: with that. But I mean, then again, years ago, they
- 14:37Speaker 5: were saying the same thing too about Roberto Alomar, you know,
- 14:40Speaker 5: World Series champion, future Hall of Famer, But what did
- 14:43Speaker 5: he do.
- 14:43Speaker 4: With the Mets? Right, I feel like a similar conversations
- 14:46Speaker 4: we're having.
- 14:47Speaker 1: It's a huge difference there, my dear friend. The year
- 14:50Speaker 1: before the Mets got him, he bet at three thirty six,
- 14:55Speaker 1: he bet, not like Simeon with he about two twenty
- 14:59Speaker 1: last year. I mean, he was still playing at a
- 15:01Speaker 1: high level, and you know, some guys just flame out quickly, and.
- 15:05Speaker 2: Alamar had a good year and I want to if
- 15:07Speaker 2: I'm not mistaken, so I.
- 15:08Speaker 5: Guess a great year and then he just completely fell
- 15:12Speaker 5: off the face of the planet. Now for semi and
- 15:14Speaker 5: of course it's been a little slower in that regard.
- 15:17Speaker 5: But it's gonna be highlight highlighted either way when you're
- 15:21Speaker 5: under that big media spotlight that New York is. I mean,
- 15:24Speaker 5: that's just naturally gonna come either way for some guys
- 15:28Speaker 5: quick some well, but you.
- 15:30Speaker 2: Don't see Mishek coming back. But I have a bigger
- 15:32Speaker 2: question for you, Louis Well.
- 15:34Speaker 1: Hold on with your question on Bashett. The only thing
- 15:38Speaker 1: that might change this with Bishett, who's played very well
- 15:42Speaker 1: after the first seven weeks of the season, is because
- 15:46Speaker 1: is this potential lockout, he might opt in because depending
- 15:53Speaker 1: on what the new rules are going to be, the
- 15:56Speaker 1: new agreement is going to be, it might be it
- 15:59Speaker 1: might be a disadvantage if he opts out. Remember, he's
- 16:03Speaker 1: he's guaranteed watch forty two forty three million next year
- 16:09Speaker 1: if he opts out, and he may not get that.
- 16:13Speaker 1: So that's the one thing, that's the one thing we
- 16:15Speaker 1: gotta we got to look at. And I think a
- 16:18Speaker 1: lot of guys are going to be signed before December first.
- 16:20Speaker 2: And what about your guy, Louis Robert Junior. What's his
- 16:24Speaker 2: deal going to be.
- 16:24Speaker 1: For the well, he's got I think it. I think
- 16:27Speaker 1: it's h he has a weird opt out. I'm not
- 16:30Speaker 1: sure if it's a I think if the Mets have
- 16:32Speaker 1: the opt out, or it's think.
- 16:34Speaker 4: It's a club option. To answer your question here, Louis
- 16:37Speaker 4: twenty million dollars I believe.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Yeah, So whatever they have to pay him, it's probably
- 16:43Speaker 1: like five million. If it's a club option, that probably
- 16:46Speaker 1: just cut bait with him.
- 16:47Speaker 4: Yeah, two million buyout if the Mets decline the club option.
- 16:51Speaker 1: Okay, all right, so yeah, the Mets will probably give
- 16:55Speaker 1: him the two million and say thanks, but no thanks.
- 16:58Speaker 4: The guy's hurt go elsewhere.
- 16:59Speaker 1: Basically, yeah, yeah, I mean, uh, you know he could.
- 17:03Speaker 1: He can't play every day. They gotta give him a
- 17:05Speaker 1: break every two days because it was back. He's not
- 17:09Speaker 1: the guy, and he wasn't the guy when they or
- 17:11Speaker 1: when they made the trade. He just wasn't. I mean,
- 17:14Speaker 1: everybody saw it. I don't know what Sterens was seeing,
- 17:17Speaker 1: just like I don't understand what Stearns was looking at
- 17:20Speaker 1: when he traded Nemo. And we said that a million times.
- 17:23Speaker 1: It's sickening. We've been repeating it over and over again.
- 17:26Speaker 1: If you want to trade Nimo, that's fine, but you
- 17:29Speaker 1: trade him for the wrong guy you didn't trade. I mean,
- 17:35Speaker 1: you know, it's just makes no sense.
- 17:39Speaker 2: It doesn't.
- 17:40Speaker 1: Well, well, we all and I'm not saying that Neimo
- 17:45Speaker 1: or Alonzo would make the difference the match. That so
- 17:47Speaker 1: many problems with injuries, you know, but you know, but
- 17:54Speaker 1: if you're gonna trade Nemo, he kind of get you
- 17:57Speaker 1: gotta get better. You gotta get better than Simmy and
- 18:00Speaker 1: who has you know, who has too has two years
- 18:03Speaker 1: to go on? Is his deal after this one? It
- 18:06Speaker 1: makes no sense.
- 18:08Speaker 2: It was it was a frustrating off season and might
- 18:10Speaker 2: head heading into another one. But I want to go
- 18:13Speaker 2: back to my premise of yesterday, which was, I don't know.
- 18:16Speaker 2: I feel like I haven't seen this kind of competition
- 18:19Speaker 2: for a third wild card spot in a while. With
- 18:22Speaker 2: the Mariners topping on it. Four games under that that's
- 18:26Speaker 2: like the last in the pack. But if four games
- 18:28Speaker 2: under is you know where we're at on the AO,
- 18:32Speaker 2: that means it's a very competitive league. And then also
- 18:34Speaker 2: on the n O side, only six and a half
- 18:35Speaker 2: back as of yesterday. I mean it's a tight race,
- 18:39Speaker 2: and I think people are losing sight of that or
- 18:41Speaker 2: don't even want acknowledge it a tight race, or am
- 18:43Speaker 2: I out of nowhere lunch Well, well I'm.
- 18:47Speaker 1: Not saying you're out to lunch on it. But the
- 18:49Speaker 1: reason why they they're not clutching his pennant race to
- 18:55Speaker 1: their to their bullsom is because the Seattle Mayron has
- 19:00Speaker 1: there are or what fifty six and sixty four? There
- 19:04Speaker 1: are four games out there, eight games in the five hundred.
- 19:06Speaker 1: Toronto was eight games under five hundred before they won
- 19:08Speaker 1: three out of four. Now they're still five games under
- 19:10Speaker 1: five hundred, but they're only two and a half out.
- 19:12Speaker 1: You can't fool the public. It's bad baseball. And this
- 19:15Speaker 1: time there has to be there.
- 19:17Speaker 2: After trading schoobl and Mies, we can make sense.
- 19:21Speaker 4: Make it make sense.
- 19:23Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I mean, and that's what it is, guys.
- 19:26Speaker 1: If this was a race where you have a lot
- 19:32Speaker 1: of great teams at the bottom of the playoff positions,
- 19:38Speaker 1: and you're not gonna have great teams, but I mean
- 19:41Speaker 1: good teams. The Maron, the Mariners can hit.
- 19:46Speaker 5: You know.
- 19:47Speaker 1: You see the American League Central, you see one crummy
- 19:50Speaker 1: team after the other. There's there's no other way to
- 19:54Speaker 1: say it. The Indian, the Indians, the Guardians can hit.
- 19:58Speaker 1: The White Scots are a nice story, but just think
- 20:04Speaker 1: they might have home field in the first round if
- 20:09Speaker 1: depending on what happens to the Western Division winner, if
- 20:13Speaker 1: the White Sox continue to do with what they're doing,
- 20:15Speaker 1: and what the White Sox are doing, it's remarkable considering
- 20:18Speaker 1: where the White Sox have been the last three years.
- 20:21Speaker 1: You know, they've lost watch three hundred and forty five
- 20:23Speaker 1: three d and forty eight games combined the last three years.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Whatever happens to them, no matter. Even though the American
- 20:28Speaker 1: League is not a good league, This year. This is
- 20:32Speaker 1: a huge year, positive year for the White Sox, no
- 20:35Speaker 1: matter what happens. I mean to just think two years
- 20:38Speaker 1: ago they were they lost one hundred and twenty one games.
- 20:42Speaker 1: They've lost over one hundred games three years in a row,
- 20:45Speaker 1: and they got some good young talent the team that
- 20:48Speaker 1: the team that way. Yeah, yeah, no, absolutely, there's a whole.
- 20:52Speaker 2: Game for them, that's for sure.
- 20:54Speaker 1: You know.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Numerically though, and I don't know if you're wanting agree
- 20:56Speaker 2: with me on this point I made yesterday, Numerically, the
- 21:00Speaker 2: Yankees could be uh one of the best wild card
- 21:03Speaker 2: teams uh in there in a while. I don't know.
- 21:06Speaker 2: I feel like eighty something ninety plus record ninety one
- 21:10Speaker 2: records are pretty good record for a wild card team
- 21:13Speaker 2: that's probably gonna be out a lot of divisional records too,
- 21:16Speaker 2: which just I.
- 21:16Speaker 1: Mean, I could thinking off the top of my head
- 21:19Speaker 1: when they had that dumb wild card playoff, I think
- 21:24Speaker 1: the the Cardinals one year won ninety seven games and
- 21:28Speaker 1: the Pirates won ninety eight and they had one of
- 21:31Speaker 1: them was eliminating that one game playoff. I forget what
- 21:34Speaker 1: year it was, but been yeah, I mean that was ridiculous. One,
- 21:41Speaker 1: you know, you win ninety eight, ninety or whatever. It's
- 21:43Speaker 1: not they the Pirates won ninety eight and I think
- 21:46Speaker 1: the Cardinals won ninety seven. You play one game and
- 21:48Speaker 1: then go home, you know.
- 21:51Speaker 2: So there's been some really and that's why they expended
- 21:54Speaker 2: the three games at least.
- 21:55Speaker 1: So yes, and three games is fine.
- 21:58Speaker 2: That'd be a four game set also, though, like I
- 22:01Speaker 2: don't know if that'll ever happen. I'm waiting for that
- 22:02Speaker 2: to happen.
- 22:03Speaker 5: So, you know.
- 22:05Speaker 1: But getting back to the Yankees, the Yankees are going
- 22:09Speaker 1: to be good because they have three number one type
- 22:12Speaker 1: starters in their rotation, and they have a deep rotation.
- 22:16Speaker 1: They have Cole legitimate number one starter. They have Freed
- 22:20Speaker 1: legitimate number one starter, and they have Splitler a number one,
- 22:23Speaker 1: legitimate number one starter. Uh. And they they're deep with Warren.
- 22:28Speaker 1: You know, he's a number five starter.
- 22:30Speaker 2: He's not great, but he's and by the way, they
- 22:32Speaker 2: still have Rodin coming back up.
- 22:33Speaker 1: They might have Sma absolutely, I mean, boy, they I
- 22:37Speaker 1: mean they have the post.
- 22:39Speaker 2: Season that would be really good right.
- 22:41Speaker 4: There, not even as a starter, but as a high
- 22:43Speaker 4: leverage bullpen arm.
- 22:44Speaker 5: How much of a difference would that make for the
- 22:46Speaker 5: Yankees to be able to have his services there.
- 22:49Speaker 2: I think that's why they got run into DeVault despite
- 22:52Speaker 2: his It's edition by some traction exactly because the Vault
- 22:55Speaker 2: was a mess. But I think they could see some
- 22:57Speaker 2: others coming in that bullpen in October, so they only
- 23:00Speaker 2: get them out of there now.
- 23:01Speaker 1: Now that the Yankees issue is going to be And
- 23:04Speaker 1: you know that they've seen this in the in the past,
- 23:08Speaker 1: even when they've had Stanton and Judge in the postseason,
- 23:14Speaker 1: Judge has had a tough time hitting good playoff pitching. Remember,
- 23:19Speaker 1: you're not seeing uh, you know, you're not seeing the
- 23:23Speaker 1: dregs of the league come playoff time. Most of the
- 23:27Speaker 1: time you're seeing it. You're seeing outstanding pitchers. So they
- 23:32Speaker 1: need Judge back. I know you you were talking about
- 23:34Speaker 1: Bellinger yesterday on your podcast. Yeah, you want Bellinger back.
- 23:40Speaker 1: But let's face it, Bellinger's home and road splits are terrible.
- 23:46Speaker 1: Is batting a three twenty five at home nine to
- 23:49Speaker 1: eighty one ops, eight home runs on the road two
- 23:53Speaker 1: h five batting average, three home runs five ninety five ops.
- 23:58Speaker 1: It's a huge difference. And I'm I'm a big Bellinger fan.
- 24:01Speaker 1: I like Cody Belger's game. I was hoping the Mets
- 24:04Speaker 1: might sign him, but he's definitely a Yankee. Stadium is
- 24:09Speaker 1: definitely tailored for Cody Bellinger's left handed hitting style.
- 24:14Speaker 2: Even though they into the right field, the right field
- 24:18Speaker 2: line like just the doubles online. He just he's got
- 24:20Speaker 2: a sweet wing for that ballpark. I'll tell you, yeah,
- 24:22Speaker 2: he does.
- 24:23Speaker 1: The guy that they need back and to be effective
- 24:25Speaker 1: is the best player in the American League.
- 24:27Speaker 2: Yeah, Aaron Judge, no question, absolutely quick.
- 24:31Speaker 5: That's how the Yankees get to the World Series. If
- 24:33Speaker 5: there is a path for them to make it to
- 24:35Speaker 5: the World Series this year, it all start.
- 24:37Speaker 1: I mean, there's a wide highway pass. It's a five laneer.
- 24:43Speaker 1: It's a five lane highway for them to get get
- 24:46Speaker 1: to the World Series this year. The best team in
- 24:48Speaker 1: the American League is the Tampa.
- 24:50Speaker 2: Bay Rays, who are up supporting against the A's and
- 24:54Speaker 2: I'll tell you they're on an eight game win streak.
- 24:56Speaker 2: But they faced the A's at the right time. I think,
- 24:58Speaker 2: just like the Dodgers facing the roads are at the
- 25:01Speaker 2: right time to get them back on track a little bit.
- 25:03Speaker 1: But you make a very good point. You make a
- 25:06Speaker 1: very good point, Alex. When the Red Sox were steaming
- 25:09Speaker 1: hot up until Saturday that where they were thirty one
- 25:13Speaker 1: and five. Now they've lost four in a row. They
- 25:16Speaker 1: played Tampa and Campa got swept. When you're playing well,
- 25:23Speaker 1: it doesn't matter who you're playing, like the Red Sox
- 25:26Speaker 1: were playing then. Now the Red Sox have had They've
- 25:29Speaker 1: lost four games in a row to two teams under
- 25:33Speaker 1: well four or five excuse me, the teams under five hundred,
- 25:36Speaker 1: the Pathetic Athletics, and they've lost to Toronto, one of
- 25:39Speaker 1: the most disappointing teams in the American League. Yes, they've
- 25:43Speaker 1: had their pitching injuries. I understand that the Toronto has,
- 25:47Speaker 1: but for them to be struggling from day one is surprising.
- 25:53Speaker 1: Detroit too, I mean Detroit since last September first, when
- 25:57Speaker 1: they started choking away that huge lead against Cleveland Jim
- 26:03Speaker 1: Today they're very disappointing. The other team, that's very disappointing.
- 26:09Speaker 1: You talk about all these young players, and we talked
- 26:12Speaker 1: about in the past, Baltimore Baltimore Gunnar Henderson, Botting two fifteen,
- 26:18Speaker 1: Jackson Holliday, another guy who's drafted number one. They got
- 26:22Speaker 1: rid of Rushman who was drafted number one. Overall, they're young,
- 26:26Speaker 1: people haven't come through for them, and their best player
- 26:31Speaker 1: is Pete Alonzo.
- 26:33Speaker 2: Yes he has. He's been quite a he's been quite
- 26:36Speaker 2: a quite an impression. All Right, we gotta get to
- 26:38Speaker 2: this before we go, and I don't even really care
- 26:40Speaker 2: about football right now, but we got to get into
- 26:42Speaker 2: the bigger news today of the big sale that happened
- 26:45Speaker 2: with the Lakers, another sale one in as many years.
- 26:49Speaker 2: It feels like, so what are your take what's your
- 26:51Speaker 2: takeaway on that, Louis.
- 26:53Speaker 1: My takeaway on that is when I joined the NBA
- 26:57Speaker 1: in the New Jersey Nets in nineteen eighty one, teams
- 27:00Speaker 1: worth five six seven million dollars, the Nets worth six
- 27:06Speaker 1: seven million dollars back in nineteen eighty one. And if
- 27:09Speaker 1: you were telling me that a non NFL team was
- 27:13Speaker 1: being sold for twelve point five billion dollars, to me,
- 27:18Speaker 1: it's mind boggling, really.
- 27:20Speaker 2: And the answer there and ten billion dollars worth now apparently.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Yeah, Well, I mean what you see when from Forbes
- 27:28Speaker 1: saying that these franchise values add a couple of billion
- 27:32Speaker 1: to whoever they are, whatever you know, whatever they are.
- 27:37Speaker 5: It's especially if it's the Lakers that we're talking about here,
- 27:41Speaker 5: because I mean, look, look, this wouldn't happen for say,
- 27:44Speaker 5: the Milwaukee Bucks or whatever.
- 27:46Speaker 1: But a lot of it might Milwaukee Bucks. But they're
- 27:50Speaker 1: gonna even if you want to buy a Milwaukee Bucks, they're.
- 27:53Speaker 4: Gonna go at least a couple of billion.
- 27:54Speaker 1: I'm sure the Milwaukee Bucks you probably can uh get
- 28:00Speaker 1: probably six billion to buy using you guys, I'm telling you,
- 28:07Speaker 1: it's it's crazy. It's crazy times.
- 28:11Speaker 2: And sure with the Dodger owner under scrutiny or something
- 28:15Speaker 2: with insurance, I don't know exactly what's with Mark Walter. Yeah,
- 28:17Speaker 2: I don't know what's going on there, but I heard
- 28:19Speaker 2: there's something going on.
- 28:20Speaker 1: Then he bought part of Lakers last year, I believe
- 28:23Speaker 1: from the Bus family.
- 28:24Speaker 5: Yeah, so he initially he purchased the Lakers from Genie
- 28:29Speaker 5: Buss and the rest of the Bus family. And I
- 28:32Speaker 5: don't recall off the top of my head how much
- 28:34Speaker 5: he how much it was exactly, but I know it
- 28:36Speaker 5: was a similar amount to the twelve point five billion
- 28:41Speaker 5: that he would be receiving in this sale if this
- 28:45Speaker 5: goes through it, of course, I mean that's still up
- 28:47Speaker 5: to the NBA's Board of Governors to approve it.
- 28:50Speaker 4: In the first place. So for all we know, this
- 28:52Speaker 4: might not even happen. It's up to the rest of
- 28:54Speaker 4: the owners.
- 28:54Speaker 1: But it doesn't see what happens here, you know, it'll
- 28:58Speaker 1: happen unless there's something, uh, you know, a little fishy
- 29:03Speaker 1: they want to happen, because if they see that the
- 29:05Speaker 1: Lakers are twelve point five billion, that jacks up the
- 29:08Speaker 1: price of every other franchise that might possibly be sold
- 29:12Speaker 1: in the next couple of years. Yeah, I mean it
- 29:15Speaker 1: not as something unscrupulous.
- 29:17Speaker 5: And it is telling though that he gave control of
- 29:19Speaker 5: the Rangers to his son after that. Yeah, you never
- 29:22Speaker 5: know where things could be heading.
- 29:23Speaker 4: And especially with the whole news months ago about the
- 29:26Speaker 4: Knicks and the Rangers that they might become publicly traded companies.
- 29:30Speaker 2: Now, yeah, that's that's a real There's.
- 29:32Speaker 4: Still a whole big if here at those two franchise.
- 29:37Speaker 2: And I don't know, does I mean Bob Viker's not
- 29:39Speaker 2: win Doesney anymore correct? Because I mean, no, no.
- 29:43Speaker 1: He's not, but he's he's uh you know, now he's
- 29:47Speaker 1: involved with the Lakers and the other guy I never
- 29:50Speaker 1: heard of. But now again, the other thing is why
- 29:53Speaker 1: these guys buy Let's face it, until these guys might
- 29:57Speaker 1: be tremendously successful in the life billionaires, but we never
- 30:02Speaker 1: hear of him until they become owners of sports teams.
- 30:06Speaker 1: We could you could take that back even to uh
- 30:08Speaker 1: when when Steinburn bought the Yankees for ten million, and.
- 30:11Speaker 2: I was a ship owner, ship maker, ship care guy.
- 30:14Speaker 1: You know, if he had stay in that business, he
- 30:16Speaker 1: would be he would still be a multi millionaire. That's
- 30:18Speaker 1: surely successful, but nobody would have known.
- 30:21Speaker 5: Who he is.
- 30:23Speaker 2: And you know, he really does not like the Yankees
- 30:25Speaker 2: in Cleveland. That's the interesting part. Like he loved his
- 30:28Speaker 2: his Indians back in the day, and then he bought
- 30:30Speaker 2: the Yankees.
- 30:30Speaker 5: Well, he had a minority share, I believe in the
- 30:32Speaker 5: Indians score. He bought into his Yankees interests. Sven and
- 30:36Speaker 5: he's a He's a huge basket god.
- 30:39Speaker 1: Rest is soul. He was a huge basketball fan before
- 30:41Speaker 1: the ABA. There was a league in the early sixties
- 30:44Speaker 1: called the American Basketball League and he had a uh
- 30:49Speaker 1: he had a piece of that Cleveland team in the
- 30:53Speaker 1: American Basketball leagu The league lasted for just a couple
- 30:56Speaker 1: of years, and I believe he became a minority owner
- 30:59Speaker 1: of the Carlo Bulls during the time I was with
- 31:02Speaker 1: the Nets and then he had to sell that when
- 31:04Speaker 1: he bore the piece of the nets, you know, around
- 31:07Speaker 1: two thousand or ninety nine, and it was effort, you know,
- 31:10Speaker 1: for two three years before Yankee Nets sold sold the teams.
- 31:17Speaker 2: And that's where I got to know Lewis Katz and
- 31:18Speaker 2: the whole family because you know, the Yankee Nets partnership
- 31:22Speaker 2: happened exactly the right time that I happened to meet
- 31:24Speaker 2: him over those few years, and that's how the Devils
- 31:27Speaker 2: ended up in the suite when they won the Cup
- 31:29Speaker 2: in three. I mean a lot and people don't really
- 31:32Speaker 2: remember this, I don't think, but you know, the Devil's
- 31:35Speaker 2: and Nets were very close in that era because of
- 31:37Speaker 2: Yankee Nets, weren't they? Or am I mistaken?
- 31:40Speaker 1: Yeah? No, we had to work together. We you know,
- 31:42Speaker 1: mister Lambarello was our boss for both teams, so we
- 31:45Speaker 1: knew we did. There was a lot of crossover.
- 31:48Speaker 2: So yeah, Wine and Lewis Katz oversaw both those teams.
- 31:52Speaker 2: It was just an interesting era, that's for sure. And
- 31:55Speaker 2: you know it's great to see Chico rest still around
- 31:58Speaker 2: from that whole time doing game with Lucklin.
- 32:01Speaker 1: Well, during those three years that we were together, the
- 32:04Speaker 1: next one to the finals twice. The Devils went to
- 32:07Speaker 1: the finals twice and they won one cup. Yeah, so
- 32:10Speaker 1: that was exciting. That was an exciting people.
- 32:13Speaker 2: Now, I can't believe I'm saying this, but about a
- 32:16Speaker 2: month and a few two weeks a month, we're nearly
- 32:19Speaker 2: almost a month away from the opening night in the hockey.
- 32:22Speaker 1: Now.
- 32:22Speaker 2: I know the Knicks are about twelve hundred bucks or
- 32:25Speaker 2: so more maybe two thousand for opening night my birthday
- 32:29Speaker 2: October twentieth, the batteries night. But the fact I'm saying
- 32:33Speaker 2: hockey is just over a month is insane. We're normally
- 32:36Speaker 2: so them opening mid October, so this is gonna be
- 32:38Speaker 2: a very interesting change seeing them start in September. It
- 32:41Speaker 2: does change the season a little bit, doesn't it.
- 32:43Speaker 1: It does. It does. So when you look at the
- 32:46Speaker 1: calendar and you see that the Islands are gonna be
- 32:48Speaker 1: open up in Toronto on September thirtieth, and the Ranges
- 32:54Speaker 1: the two nights before, yeah, it's weird. I have to
- 32:58Speaker 1: admit to see September regular season game is weird.
- 33:02Speaker 2: So, but that means we're gonna have it. We're gonna
- 33:04Speaker 2: have spring, We're gonna have regular We're gonna have training
- 33:07Speaker 2: games or you know, preseason in the middle of September.
- 33:09Speaker 2: That's normally October thing for hockey, you know, like that late.
- 33:13Speaker 4: September is when the preseason games would start.
- 33:16Speaker 5: That's how it was just last year, late September you
- 33:18Speaker 5: had your preseason sleaate and then you'd open up the
- 33:21Speaker 5: season maybe like a week or two into October. That's
- 33:24Speaker 5: at least how things were in the past couple of
- 33:26Speaker 5: years minus the COVID year. But now, I mean, it
- 33:29Speaker 5: just adds a whole new interesting layer that they're gonna
- 33:33Speaker 5: be competing with the end of the baseball regular season.
- 33:38Speaker 5: And that's where a lot of my curiosity factor arises.
- 33:43Speaker 5: The fact that they're gonna be competing now at the
- 33:45Speaker 5: end of the baseball regular season and all those great
- 33:48Speaker 5: storylines that we could probably be getting from the Pennant race,
- 33:52Speaker 5: now hockey's got to compete against that. I really don't
- 33:55Speaker 5: know how to quite feel about that. And this isn't
- 33:58Speaker 5: even This isn't even just because that the.
- 34:00Speaker 2: Gold Cards series and then the opening and then the
- 34:02Speaker 2: hockey starts riding the same time, or because I know
- 34:06Speaker 2: the season ends at twenty seventh, or is a twenty eighth,
- 34:08Speaker 2: right or something for baseball, something like that.
- 34:10Speaker 5: Yeah, so so I believe that they'd be competing with
- 34:12Speaker 5: the Wildcard Series either way.
- 34:13Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a ton of games over there too, that's
- 34:17Speaker 4: I'm thinking. So that's competition, and.
- 34:19Speaker 2: Then you'll have Giants full swing by then week two
- 34:21Speaker 2: or three. So it's gonna be a fun fall ahead,
- 34:24Speaker 2: I think. Now, I know you want to spring uh
- 34:27Speaker 2: spring training. Listen to me. I know you want to
- 34:29Speaker 2: talk about training camp. I guess because the Giants are
- 34:31Speaker 2: in West Virginia, I could care that's what they're up to,
- 34:33Speaker 2: because it's like it's far away, you know.
- 34:36Speaker 5: But but.
- 34:39Speaker 1: Just a couple of things. I mean that Giants are
- 34:41Speaker 1: back in East Rutherford now they were they remember they
- 34:44Speaker 1: went to West Virginia because of uh, the World Cup
- 34:49Speaker 1: was messing up the Middle Lands, you know, and the
- 34:51Speaker 1: Giants was supposed to have the facilities completed.
- 34:54Speaker 2: But I still that they should have kept the grass
- 34:56Speaker 2: in for the Giants that term, Oh.
- 35:00Speaker 1: Think would have been great.
- 35:00Speaker 5: The allegations, by the way, until they get rid of
- 35:03Speaker 5: that turf for once. Yeah, there never be the allegations
- 35:06Speaker 5: of having the worst.
- 35:07Speaker 1: The Jets and Giants want that the players want want
- 35:11Speaker 1: that grass field desperately.
- 35:14Speaker 4: But I mean their ligaments are getting torn up left,
- 35:18Speaker 4: right and center.
- 35:18Speaker 1: Well again, now look at in the first ten days
- 35:23Speaker 1: of training camp, how many guys have gotten hurt and
- 35:25Speaker 1: then they and they're playing mostly on grass their training
- 35:28Speaker 1: camp and and they've been hurt. But again there's still
- 35:31Speaker 1: a big difference turf U to UH to regular natural surface.
- 35:37Speaker 1: So I would love to see that. But a couple
- 35:39Speaker 1: of things in hockey real quick, and then UH, Alex
- 35:42Speaker 1: you can wrap it up. Quin News can be a
- 35:46Speaker 1: free free agent at the end of this year. There's
- 35:50Speaker 1: been no I haven't heard anything from Minnesota from Bill Garren.
- 35:55Speaker 1: What they doing? Are they going to sign them? Is
- 35:57Speaker 1: uh he's going to force a tray? Is he waiting
- 36:01Speaker 1: to uh be a free agent at the end of
- 36:03Speaker 1: the year because is he going to be a devil?
- 36:05Speaker 1: Does he want does he want to play with other brothers?
- 36:07Speaker 1: Is he gonna shine a Is he going to sign
- 36:10Speaker 1: a short term deal to match up with with Jack
- 36:13Speaker 1: Hughes' contract, which has three more years to go, so
- 36:16Speaker 1: they can go as a pair in three years. I
- 36:19Speaker 1: don't think that's gonna happen because of the young excu's
- 36:24Speaker 1: brother signing an eight year deal. So that's something to
- 36:28Speaker 1: keep an eye on even before the season begins. Uh,
- 36:33Speaker 1: when yous are they going to trade him? Are they?
- 36:36Speaker 5: You know?
- 36:36Speaker 1: I mean he could be a twenty an eighteen to
- 36:39Speaker 1: twenty million dollar guy and that never happens in the
- 36:43Speaker 1: in the NHL. Dylan Larkin, what's gonna happen to him?
- 36:47Speaker 1: He hasn't been traded yet? He wants to be traded?
- 36:50Speaker 1: Is that not going to happen? Helluck says, I'm okay
- 36:54Speaker 1: in Winnipeg. But but so Wayne keep saying, but is
- 37:00Speaker 1: he going to be traded? He's going to be traded
- 37:01Speaker 1: at the deadline. Just a couple of interesting things. All
- 37:05Speaker 1: three ironically, all three of them are Americans, And uh,
- 37:10Speaker 1: well we know one thing that I'll.
- 37:11Speaker 2: Be keeping an eye on is uh and look, if
- 37:15Speaker 2: I'm not mistaken, we had a busy NHL free agency
- 37:18Speaker 2: let alone, we never usually do, but that was kind
- 37:20Speaker 2: of busy, and everyone's keep an eye and then of
- 37:22Speaker 2: course the draft happened and all that. But I'm kind
- 37:24Speaker 2: of here's how Patrick Kanes and it ends his career
- 37:27Speaker 2: with the Blackhawks, Like I wanted to go on a
- 37:29Speaker 2: high note, you know, so that'll be kind of fun
- 37:30Speaker 2: to watch on I think he will.
- 37:31Speaker 1: I mean, I think he's doing a good spot to
- 37:33Speaker 1: end his career. So I mean that's all. That's the
- 37:36Speaker 1: only thing I want to bring about hockey on this
- 37:39Speaker 1: on this.
- 37:40Speaker 2: Glistering hot day. I know we are all we're all kind.
- 37:43Speaker 5: Of uite the irony there, but I mean not that
- 37:47Speaker 5: the Blackhawks are really going to be at a point
- 37:51Speaker 5: in their franchise's history where they'd be able to compete
- 37:53Speaker 5: for a cup. Now, don't get me wrong, it'd be
- 37:54Speaker 5: pretty cool to see Kane hoist up Lord Stanley for.
- 37:58Speaker 4: One more time.
- 37:58Speaker 5: But well, jeeze, if he could make the playoffs at
- 38:02Speaker 5: least with the black Hawks, if this is his final
- 38:04Speaker 5: go around, how poetic with that?
- 38:06Speaker 2: Well one, I know one last thing because we talk
- 38:09Speaker 2: about it with the Mets and the apathy there, but
- 38:12Speaker 2: you look at both weeks in a row. I asked
- 38:14Speaker 2: this to Ryan yesterday. I'll ask you old Timer's day
- 38:18Speaker 2: ish stuff at Cityfield with the fortieth Old Timer's Day
- 38:21Speaker 2: at Yankee Stadium. But the fans aren't turning up, is
- 38:24Speaker 2: Michael okay?
- 38:24Speaker 5: Right?
- 38:26Speaker 2: Is there just this not caring of nostalgia or is
- 38:29Speaker 2: there something deeper in your mind?
- 38:30Speaker 1: Louis, you are talking to a baseball nostalgia guy. Even
- 38:38Speaker 1: when I was younger, when I was in my teens,
- 38:42Speaker 1: i'd studied baseball. I mean, I know I knew who
- 38:45Speaker 1: these guys were, whether they were Yankees or great players
- 38:51Speaker 1: or players. They don't even have to be Hall of
- 38:53Speaker 1: Famous from other teams. I need the history of the game.
- 38:56Speaker 1: I enjoyed that. I'm not sure how if the young
- 38:59Speaker 1: fan and enjoys the history of the game. I really
- 39:05Speaker 1: don't believe that. Let's look at the met situation real quick.
- 39:09Speaker 1: The fortieth anniversary, they told you, guys, that's a long
- 39:12Speaker 1: time ago. If you were forty, you have to if
- 39:15Speaker 1: you were under forty seven years old, forty eight years old,
- 39:19Speaker 1: you don't know these guys. You have no connection to
- 39:21Speaker 1: the eighty six months. They know Keith Hernandez and Ron
- 39:25Speaker 1: Darling from watching them on TV. But how many guys
- 39:27Speaker 1: can tell you what position that Keith Hernandez played? Was
- 39:31Speaker 1: her right handed hit or left handed? Hither they probably
- 39:34Speaker 1: don't know that. And I think that has something to
- 39:38Speaker 1: do with it in the Yankees case. And I know
- 39:41Speaker 1: I've said this a lot of times. The Yankees have
- 39:43Speaker 1: been tremendously successful. They haven't had a losing season since
- 39:46Speaker 1: nineteen ninety two. Fans become jaded. They become jaded. The
- 39:51Speaker 1: Yankees are going to make the playoffs again? What is
- 39:53Speaker 1: this twenty three out of twenty five years?
- 39:56Speaker 2: Yeah, or some ridiculous, but the fact that they have
- 40:00Speaker 2: not had a losing record in thirty plus years is yeah.
- 40:05Speaker 2: I think I think all three of us and maybe
- 40:08Speaker 2: you had that experience to Ryan is all three of
- 40:10Speaker 2: us had parents that just raised us on like, you know,
- 40:14Speaker 2: my dad loved baseball and he was always around baseball
- 40:16Speaker 2: and baseball history. I look at kids today and their parents,
- 40:20Speaker 2: and the parents are trying to control the kid. It's like,
- 40:22Speaker 2: I don't know. I can't tell the newer generations you're
- 40:25Speaker 2: teaching kids baseball history because there's so many other things
- 40:27Speaker 2: going on, like maybe that they we didn't have growing up.
- 40:30Speaker 2: I don't know what the difference is, but there's something.
- 40:33Speaker 2: Maybe social media is a big difference too, because kids
- 40:35Speaker 2: are on the right pad now at three years old
- 40:36Speaker 2: instead of learning, you know, baseball stuff.
- 40:38Speaker 5: I don't know, because they're also not being shown the
- 40:40Speaker 5: highlights from the eighties and the seventies anymore on social
- 40:43Speaker 5: media now it's all about you know, what's trending now
- 40:46Speaker 5: and all this. But you know, say, I say, you
- 40:49Speaker 5: look at I don't know, a Gary Maddox highlight for example, right,
- 40:53Speaker 5: and this was just the first person that came to
- 40:55Speaker 5: my head and vertic Remember I think it was Harry
- 40:58Speaker 5: Kallis saying that two thirds of the earth is covered
- 41:02Speaker 5: by water or the other third covered by Gary monnockx
- 41:04Speaker 5: and he made some.
- 41:04Speaker 1: Dance actually, but like actually was Ralph Kiner who said that.
- 41:08Speaker 5: Ralph Kiner, Okay, thank you said but yeah, but again,
- 41:13Speaker 5: but yeah, you're not really see those kinds of highlights
- 41:15Speaker 5: anymore from the seventies and eighties because and I guess
- 41:17Speaker 5: there's that sort of sentiment, Okay, well what is so
- 41:20Speaker 5: so dumb for me lately?
- 41:22Speaker 2: Well, right, and you're seeing the kids say, want to
- 41:25Speaker 2: hit the homers and not like do actual baseball because
- 41:28Speaker 2: they've been growing up on watching all these guys in homers.
- 41:31Speaker 2: I mean Lindor's highlight reel. All it was was his
- 41:34Speaker 2: amazing home runs in Cleveland. But when he didn't do
- 41:36Speaker 2: that his first few months in New York. It was
- 41:38Speaker 2: all disappointing. By the way, I told you, Louis, he
- 41:40Speaker 2: wasn't going to make match his highlight reel the first
- 41:43Speaker 2: months in, and I kind of was right out of that,
- 41:44Speaker 2: like I just it was amazing to me. And of
- 41:46Speaker 2: course with Lindoor, they never even saw a pitch and
- 41:49Speaker 2: they sign him to an extension. That was kind of
- 41:51Speaker 2: interesting to me.
- 41:52Speaker 1: But well, that was like that was like getting a
- 41:56Speaker 1: free agent, even though it was a trade, and the
- 41:57Speaker 1: Mets the trade good players to get them. The thing is, Ryan,
- 42:04Speaker 1: like you said a couple of seconds ago, instant gratification.
- 42:08Speaker 1: That's what these people want. They don't, you know, they
- 42:11Speaker 1: forget about guys who played five years ago. Again, I'm
- 42:15Speaker 1: not again. I'm now I'm older. But even when I
- 42:18Speaker 1: was in my teens, I knew baseball of the thirties.
- 42:22Speaker 1: I knew Rogers hornsby stand usual. Of course, you know
- 42:27Speaker 1: the Babe Garrick, Charlie Gerringer, May's, Monty Irvin, Larry Dobie.
- 42:34Speaker 1: I know I knew those guys. I knew the history
- 42:36Speaker 1: of baseball. I never, of course, I saw May's play.
- 42:39Speaker 1: I saw May's play the last eleven years of his career.
- 42:45Speaker 1: But I knew those guys, and I don't know if
- 42:49Speaker 1: these if these fans.
- 42:52Speaker 2: I'm hoping to get to Chicago for one hundred and
- 42:54Speaker 2: fifty year anniversary of the Cubs at the end of
- 42:56Speaker 2: the month, and you know, talk about all these legendary players.
- 43:00Speaker 2: A lot of those guys are going to be celebrated
- 43:01Speaker 2: that day did not even win a ring. I mean,
- 43:04Speaker 2: you think about Ernie Banks, Rhino, you think about Mark
- 43:09Speaker 2: great Well. I think Mark might have won with the diamondbackspace, yeah,
- 43:12Speaker 2: but all in the Cubs he did not. But you
- 43:14Speaker 2: think about these guys, Mickey Morendini at one point with
- 43:18Speaker 2: the Cops, I mean, Paul Bacco, I think was was
- 43:21Speaker 2: the catcher at one point. I mean, all these guys
- 43:24Speaker 2: that were part of Cubs history that never won a ring.
- 43:26Speaker 2: It's amazing to me. And it's kind of sad that
- 43:31Speaker 2: you know whether they did not. But the point is
- 43:33Speaker 2: is all these guys that have made history did not
- 43:34Speaker 2: win a ring. It's quite a history there actually with
- 43:38Speaker 2: the Cubs.
- 43:39Speaker 1: The other thing is maybe we've gotten to a point,
- 43:42Speaker 1: and this is just in the Yankees case, maybe they
- 43:45Speaker 1: shouldn't have Old Timer's Day every year. Maybe it should
- 43:48Speaker 1: be every second year, Maybe it should be every third year.
- 43:52Speaker 1: Maybe it's gone to the point everything changes, everything changes.
- 43:56Speaker 1: Do you ever think you would you would see forty
- 43:58Speaker 1: six interleague games?
- 43:59Speaker 2: Or well, you do it because obviously the next so
- 44:02Speaker 2: ninety six was a one off, But then you don't
- 44:04Speaker 2: do it in ninety seven. You do in ninety eight, ninety,
- 44:05Speaker 2: ninety two thousand, because those three years, that three p
- 44:09Speaker 2: needs to be remembered. I mean, that's the only way
- 44:11Speaker 2: you're going to keep thanks for your life. So you're
- 44:13Speaker 2: onto the thirty the anniversary of all those teams and
- 44:15Speaker 2: to Old Timer's Day, and then maybe do it again
- 44:18Speaker 2: in twenty twenty thirty nine or whatever.
- 44:21Speaker 1: Maybe you just don't do it every year. And yeah,
- 44:25Speaker 1: so there was again. You guys were there, you know,
- 44:27Speaker 1: well Michael Kay said there was twenty two twenty three
- 44:29Speaker 1: thousand fans there during the old timer ceremony. Eventually, yes,
- 44:33Speaker 1: I guess they announced forty five thousand. I mean this
- 44:37Speaker 1: obviously you're going to see a good time.
- 44:38Speaker 2: Mean, I noticed people were coming in after the ceremony,
- 44:41Speaker 2: I say, and I'm thinking to myself, do they not care?
- 44:44Speaker 2: Do they not know that there was a bad time Van.
- 44:46Speaker 1: Your answer, Alex, if they're coming in in the second
- 44:49Speaker 1: first inning, the second inning, there's your answer that the
- 44:53Speaker 1: old Timer's Day doesn't have the allure. And I wasn't
- 44:56Speaker 1: even a Yankee fan when I was growing up, but
- 44:59Speaker 1: I watched Dult Timer's Day. I watched it and fans
- 45:03Speaker 1: were always in the.
- 45:06Speaker 2: Fans were always in their seats. Anyway, we got to
- 45:09Speaker 2: go back to our radio gig, but Lou always a
