- 0:27What is going on, everybody?
- 0:28Welcome to Thursday Night CrossFit Talk.
- 0:31My name is Scott Schweitzer.
- 0:32I'm the Clydesdale.
- 0:33I have with me my normal co-host,
- 0:35Jamie Latimer, and our special co-host,
- 0:38who is going to fill in for
- 0:39most of the night for me.
- 0:41I'll be here,
- 0:41but I don't have much of a voice,
- 0:44Carolyn Prevost,
- 0:45who is a great friend of the show,
- 0:47and we appreciate her so much.
- 0:49But we're going to go through today's news,
- 0:51and I'm actually going to
- 0:52turn it over to Jamie to
- 0:54lead this edition.
- 0:56And so we're gonna we're
- 0:58gonna kick it off.
- 1:00All right, big day.
- 1:01Um,
- 1:02so one of the big breaking news we got
- 1:05male O'Brien has said she
- 1:07is out and not going to
- 1:09even do the open this year.
- 1:11thoughts, Carolyn.
- 1:13I'm not surprised.
- 1:15Looked like she's, like she said,
- 1:17she's at peace with her decision.
- 1:20There's no timeline for when
- 1:21she'll be ready to come back.
- 1:22If she wants to come back,
- 1:24she's someone that's going to be active,
- 1:25I think her whole life and she'll,
- 1:28she'll find something to
- 1:30stay fit and yeah, happy for her.
- 1:32I mean,
- 1:33if this is what she wants and this
- 1:34is what she needs for her health,
- 1:35I think that's, that's good.
- 1:38Yeah.
- 1:39Sounds like she's,
- 1:40In Hawaii, enjoying her time.
- 1:43I have heard a lot of people
- 1:45speculating she may be
- 1:47going to do a high rocks race.
- 1:49They've seen a lot of posts
- 1:50in that direction.
- 1:50A little less stress, I would say,
- 1:53with something like that.
- 1:54So I could see that route.
- 1:56I don't know.
- 1:56I don't even know if
- 1:57competing in anything is on
- 1:58her horizon right now.
- 2:00She just looks like she's
- 2:01honestly having a good time traveling,
- 2:03spending time with her
- 2:04boyfriend and getting some
- 2:06training in whenever she can.
- 2:07I think that's good for her.
- 2:10Yeah, I agree.
- 2:12This is actually one of my
- 2:13biggest pet peeve topics.
- 2:16And so I do want to,
- 2:17I want to jump in here a little bit.
- 2:19And that is we've got to stop pushing 13,
- 2:2314,
- 2:2415 year old kids into professional sports,
- 2:27whether it be soccer,
- 2:29whether it be gymnastics,
- 2:30whether it be CrossFit, whatever it is.
- 2:34Carolyn's a great example.
- 2:35She played sports every
- 2:37season and it was different.
- 2:39She got to shut off one, pick up another.
- 2:41I did the same when I was in high school.
- 2:44It made high school sports
- 2:45enjoyable for me to move
- 2:47from sport to sport to sport.
- 2:50And the fact that you think
- 2:51a 13 year old is going to
- 2:52be a professional athlete.
- 2:55It's just too much, I think,
- 2:57for kids these days.
- 2:59And my biggest hope for Mal
- 3:02is I don't care if she ever comes back.
- 3:06If she's happy,
- 3:07that's the most important thing.
- 3:10But it says a lot that she
- 3:12moved all the way to Hawaii,
- 3:14kind of out of the spotlight.
- 3:17to get away from some things.
- 3:19And,
- 3:20and I think we need to respect that
- 3:23and let her find whatever
- 3:25it is she wants to do in life.
- 3:29Because she looks like she's
- 3:30having a ball.
- 3:31That's a cute video.
- 3:33Absolutely.
- 3:33I mean, yeah, like her whole identity,
- 3:35I feel like for many years was CrossFit,
- 3:37right?
- 3:37And it's, it can be hard to, you know,
- 3:40step away from that and try to refine,
- 3:43you know, what makes you happy.
- 3:44And, and it, you know,
- 3:46especially when you're that
- 3:47part of your life, you maybe you're just,
- 3:49you still like,
- 3:50but you just can't do the
- 3:51competition part.
- 3:52So yeah, I mean,
- 3:53looking forward to seeing
- 3:54the things that she's going
- 3:55to post and what she's, you know,
- 3:58her next next adventures.
- 4:03Can you are so right?
- 4:04We missed our five minutes
- 4:05of TV talk to start the hour.
- 4:08Oh, man.
- 4:10Turn it over to Jamie and
- 4:11look what happens.
- 4:14I don't even know what I've
- 4:15been I don't know what I've
- 4:16been watching this week.
- 4:17Nothing really I haven't
- 4:18gotten that like the movie
- 4:20that you suggested.
- 4:21I saw it but I skipped over
- 4:23I've been pretty busy this
- 4:24week so I don't have any
- 4:25like any show talk here and
- 4:28even watch anything.
- 4:30I honestly have not watched
- 4:33a single thing.
- 4:34I am busy doing schoolwork.
- 4:37I just started my next,
- 4:38like my new semester last week.
- 4:40So it's just been just prepping,
- 4:43meeting my new students and
- 4:45adjusting what,
- 4:46where I want to go with the semester.
- 4:48Cause now you get like, you know,
- 4:49different levels that come in every year.
- 4:51So it's just been busy,
- 4:52busy first couple of weeks
- 4:54and then things will start
- 4:55to settle after that for me.
- 5:00What's your TV?
- 5:06It goes with the first
- 5:07agenda item we kind of skipped over,
- 5:09and that is my health, that I am back.
- 5:12I'm watching a lot of Friends.
- 5:15And just so you know,
- 5:17the reason I watch Friends
- 5:18is it's probably my
- 5:19favorite show of all time.
- 5:22And it's something that I
- 5:23can sleep to and wake up
- 5:26and sleep and wake up and sleep.
- 5:29I know the show well enough
- 5:31that I know where we're at.
- 5:33But I've also had a lot of
- 5:35anxiety with what happened
- 5:38to me this last week.
- 5:40And Friends has kept me even
- 5:42keel during that with just
- 5:45some lighthearted laughter
- 5:46and nothing too serious.
- 5:49Before I went in the hospital,
- 5:52I was watching Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
- 5:54I stopped that for now.
- 5:57I need something normal,
- 5:58something just kind of,
- 6:01Easy on the brain familiar.
- 6:04Yeah.
- 6:05Agreed.
- 6:06So Lex has a couple questions here.
- 6:08Is she in Hawaii with her
- 6:10boyfriend or did her family move there?
- 6:12I don't believe her family moved.
- 6:13So I think that she's just
- 6:14there with the boyfriend
- 6:16and she moved there.
- 6:19I think so too.
- 6:20And I noticed that back when
- 6:22I went in like August that
- 6:24she had put Hawaii in her bowl.
- 6:25So she's been there a while.
- 6:26Um,
- 6:29And she doesn't have HWPO in
- 6:31her bio anymore.
- 6:32Did she leave that?
- 6:34That's a good question
- 6:35because they posted her a
- 6:37couple of months ago when
- 6:38they did their roster.
- 6:40So that might be a new exit.
- 6:43At the end of the video, she says,
- 6:46when you want to know more
- 6:47about my future, you'll hear it from me.
- 6:51Wow.
- 6:53That's a statement, huh?
- 6:54She also has her YouTube channel.
- 6:59So I'm sure she might start
- 7:00doing a little bit more
- 7:01with that and maybe showing
- 7:02a different side of her.
- 7:03I know I watched something
- 7:04with her cooking and things like that.
- 7:08So I'm sure she's going to
- 7:09explore different avenues as well.
- 7:12Yeah.
- 7:15We got a Christopher Alford.
- 7:17Carolyn, what do you teach?
- 7:19My daughter is a music teacher.
- 7:20So I have a grade nine math, grade 10 math,
- 7:24and then a grade 11 and 12 fitness class,
- 7:27which I crushed today.
- 7:28It's great.
- 7:30I'm sure you crush that every day.
- 7:33They got to love having you as a fitness.
- 7:36They have a lot of respect.
- 7:37That's for sure.
- 7:38And this group that I have this semester,
- 7:42they all took the class in grade 10,
- 7:44basically almost all of them.
- 7:45And they have continued to
- 7:46work out at lunchtime and
- 7:48They've all signed up for
- 7:49different gyms and they
- 7:52come in now with their little notebooks,
- 7:54write the workout,
- 7:55write all their lifts and everything.
- 7:57Like they're so independent.
- 7:59It's really nice to see them take that,
- 8:02you know, very passionate with their.
- 8:03That's awesome.
- 8:05And you have an affiliate in the school.
- 8:07Yeah.
- 8:08Yeah.
- 8:08That's, that's the gym.
- 8:09It's just the affiliate.
- 8:12So I get access to some of
- 8:13the affiliate benefits and,
- 8:17That's really cool.
- 8:19Okay, another athlete.
- 8:21Lazar leaves Mayhem.
- 8:24This one's news to me.
- 8:25So Scott found some recent
- 8:28information that I hadn't seen.
- 8:29So you have an Instagram post on this?
- 8:31All right.
- 8:37Nope.
- 8:39Nope.
- 8:40All these pins get me.
- 8:42Oh, yeah, I know.
- 8:44Hey, that was it.
- 8:50I think I had seen something
- 8:51about the fact that he was
- 8:53going back to his previous
- 8:54coach from when he did the
- 8:55best at the games, right?
- 8:57Is that what we had seen?
- 8:59I don't remember where it was.
- 9:00I think he pulled it.
- 9:01Yeah, he may have pulled it.
- 9:04But it did mention something
- 9:06about going back to his
- 9:08roots when he first
- 9:09finished top 10 at the
- 9:10games and then had a
- 9:12picture with a coach or
- 9:13something like that.
- 9:15And then...
- 9:17Assuming he's going back there.
- 9:19It could just be,
- 9:20that's his like coach where
- 9:22he lives and then still
- 9:23follows the mayhem program,
- 9:25which you see a lot of times, um,
- 9:28when people don't really
- 9:29live in Tennessee.
- 9:31Yeah.
- 9:32It's gotta be hard.
- 9:33I mean, you can follow the man programming,
- 9:36but I feel like if you had
- 9:37the thing going,
- 9:39if you aren't going to be
- 9:40in that camp with them,
- 9:42you probably better off
- 9:43with the personal coach that you had.
- 9:46Yeah, it might be in a story.
- 9:48Let me look real quick.
- 9:49Yeah, it could be a story.
- 9:50I just showed it where he
- 9:52does advertise for ATB lab programming.
- 9:58There's a comment he makes.
- 10:00So I'm back for that video we just showed.
- 10:03And here.
- 10:05That's the one, I think.
- 10:10Whoops.
- 10:11I tried to pause and it went.
- 10:122021, my first CrossFit Games,
- 10:19first top 10 finish, first event win,
- 10:21and the best male rookie of the year.
- 10:23All done with this, man.
- 10:24Glad to be back to finish what we started.
- 10:32Good for him.
- 10:33Ken says here,
- 10:34I remember Rich saying a
- 10:35couple years ago that it
- 10:36seems the trend for people
- 10:38to only be at Mayhem for
- 10:39about three to four years
- 10:40at most and then move on.
- 10:42I
- 10:44I mean,
- 10:44that could be due to the intensity
- 10:47at which they train.
- 10:48Rich has said so many times
- 10:50the training age of his
- 10:52body is just too much wear and tear.
- 10:58They go hard there.
- 10:59They do a lot of volume.
- 11:00I kind of think that's the
- 11:01case in most camps.
- 11:04You can only hang around for
- 11:05so long and keep up for so long.
- 11:09Yeah.
- 11:10And if you know the coach like very well,
- 11:13you have that good relationship.
- 11:15Sometimes it just has a
- 11:16little bit less pressure.
- 11:17You know,
- 11:17you can be more honest with your
- 11:19training with that person
- 11:21and adjust things as you need.
- 11:26Do you want me to do my
- 11:26health update before?
- 11:28Yeah.
- 11:29Yeah.
- 11:30At least we're trying to
- 11:31save you from talking.
- 11:32We know you're going to do
- 11:32you also with Cheryl tomorrow,
- 11:34but please tell us everything that you,
- 11:36you know, you're going through.
- 11:38So if you listen to the
- 11:39weight loss show last week,
- 11:41I was kind of hitting a
- 11:42breaking point where I
- 11:45couldn't breathe much.
- 11:47I couldn't breathe very well.
- 11:49And with Cheryl and I talked
- 11:52about the stresses in my life,
- 11:53like my sister's having
- 11:54cancer removed tomorrow,
- 11:57some different things like that.
- 11:59So I went to the family
- 12:00doctor that Tuesday,
- 12:03which would be a week and a half ago.
- 12:06He diagnosed me with lung infection,
- 12:09gave me antibiotics and steroids.
- 12:13I get to Friday,
- 12:14I start to feel a little bit better.
- 12:15Saturday, fell off a cliff,
- 12:17like could barely breathe,
- 12:19could barely even walk like
- 12:21to the bathroom.
- 12:24And my wife is like,
- 12:27we're going to the ER.
- 12:28So we go outside and I'm in
- 12:30such a panic attack,
- 12:32like I can't even get in my car.
- 12:35I can't even describe like
- 12:37like every time I got in the car,
- 12:38I couldn't breathe.
- 12:40Was it the anxiety of going
- 12:42to the ER or was it?
- 12:44I don't know.
- 12:46So I had like so much gas.
- 12:47My stomach was protruding out.
- 12:50And every time I like
- 12:51crunched into the car,
- 12:53it felt like you're cutting
- 12:54off my airway.
- 12:57And and so she takes me to the ER.
- 13:00I finally get in there.
- 13:03I opened this, we like,
- 13:04it was cold Saturday.
- 13:05Like we had the sunroof open.
- 13:07We had the windows open,
- 13:09but thank goodness the ER
- 13:10is only like 10 minutes up the street.
- 13:13So we get there,
- 13:15couldn't ask for better care.
- 13:17They get me in like 15 tests
- 13:18done in five minutes, like bing, bang,
- 13:21boom, chest x-ray, chest, a CAT scan.
- 13:28Stomach x-ray.
- 13:30Just one thing after another.
- 13:33And they found the AFib within 10 minutes.
- 13:37Hooked me up to an EKG.
- 13:39Found that immediately.
- 13:41And then it was put me on
- 13:44medicine to try to get that
- 13:46to correct itself.
- 13:48That wasn't happening very fast.
- 13:50So they decided they were
- 13:51going to transfer me to the hospital.
- 13:55Squad came and got me at
- 13:56like 4 o'clock in the morning.
- 13:58On Saturday night, Sunday morning,
- 14:01I go to the hospital.
- 14:03They hook me up to everything,
- 14:05another bunch of tests.
- 14:08And what had happened was a
- 14:12lot of things around it.
- 14:13So the AFib is the most important thing,
- 14:15which is not life-threatening in itself,
- 14:18but it can cause strokes.
- 14:19It can cause some other things.
- 14:21So you want to get it under control.
- 14:25Um, but the,
- 14:27I had that sinus surgery in
- 14:28October and it was on prednisone a lot.
- 14:32That prednisone pushed my
- 14:34blood sugar up to three 80.
- 14:38And eventually we learned my
- 14:40A1C to 10 and it was like six,
- 14:44six months ago.
- 14:47So now I'm in like diabetic condition.
- 14:50need to have that.
- 14:52Blood pressure stayed okay.
- 14:55It was a little bit variant,
- 14:56but it was in the okay range.
- 15:03Trying to think what else
- 15:04I'm still doing the coughing thing.
- 15:06So they're having me spit in
- 15:08a cup so that can go off to lab.
- 15:10Um, they're giving me stuff for that.
- 15:13Um, and every time that like I'm coughing,
- 15:15I'm panicking because it's
- 15:17closing off my airway to like everything.
- 15:20Um, I have so many medications right now.
- 15:24It's insane.
- 15:27And so I stayed there for a couple days.
- 15:30Everything leveled out.
- 15:32My heartbeat was 150 beats a
- 15:33minute to 165 beats a
- 15:34minute when I went into the ER.
- 15:35When I got let go,
- 15:35it was between 65 and 75,
- 15:37but still not synced.
- 15:48So they sent me home with medications.
- 15:52I don't trust my family doctor anymore.
- 15:54And I talked to the doctor
- 15:55in the hospital.
- 15:56Like, what do I do?
- 15:57I don't trust him because
- 15:59every time I go there,
- 16:01all he does is throw pills
- 16:02at me and doesn't like do
- 16:04the tests I need done.
- 16:06So they set me up with a
- 16:07counselor to get a new doctor.
- 16:10So I see the new doctor next Friday.
- 16:11I see the cardiologist on
- 16:14Monday to kind of follow up.
- 16:17The cardiologist is going to
- 16:18make the decision on Monday.
- 16:20If the medicine hasn't done it enough,
- 16:22they're going to send an
- 16:23appointment to shock my
- 16:24heart back into rhythm.
- 16:28So it's still irregular right now?
- 16:31Yeah.
- 16:32And do you feel that?
- 16:38Now I'm acutely aware of it.
- 16:41I can feel a flutter in my
- 16:43chest every time it gets way off.
- 16:46So they hooked me up to a
- 16:47machine in the hospital and there's two,
- 16:50two beats going.
- 16:52There's a top of your heart
- 16:53and the bottom of your
- 16:53heart and the closer they're matched,
- 16:56the better I feel.
- 16:59So if one's beating it like
- 17:0065 beats a minute and one's
- 17:02at 68 beats a minute,
- 17:04I'm feeling really good
- 17:05even though it's still off.
- 17:07But if they vary,
- 17:08I feel like a flutter in my chest and it,
- 17:12it just zaps me.
- 17:16So, yeah,
- 17:19Monday's the decision whether
- 17:21they bring me in and shock
- 17:22the heart back to rhythm.
- 17:26Or if it's so bad,
- 17:27they need to do an ablation,
- 17:29which means they go in.
- 17:31There's a sensor at the top
- 17:32of the heart that basically
- 17:34you go in and you clean it off,
- 17:36and then it sets it back to rhythm.
- 17:39Okay.
- 17:41That's kind of like what's coming up.
- 17:42But in the meantime,
- 17:43I'm taking all these diabetes medicines.
- 17:45I'm taking heart or they
- 17:48have me on blood pressure
- 17:49just because a stroke is
- 17:51the most dangerous thing.
- 17:52Anything that can cause a stroke,
- 17:54they're trying to get my
- 17:55stuff as low as possible.
- 17:57So I'm like,
- 17:58I have to inject insulin for
- 17:59the first time in my life.
- 18:01I am taking metformin.
- 18:04I am taking heart pressure
- 18:08or blood pressure medicine.
- 18:10it's just crazy are you
- 18:13taking the insulin like on
- 18:14your like the finger or
- 18:16like to go in your stomach
- 18:17or yeah I have to prick my
- 18:19finger to read my blood
- 18:21sugar then I have to inject
- 18:23it into my stomach or my
- 18:24thigh or whatever I thought
- 18:29that would be hard it was
- 18:29not yeah um but it's just
- 18:33how many times a day do you
- 18:34have to do that
- 18:35The insulin just once.
- 18:37And it's because it's for sleeping.
- 18:40It's like a longer lasting
- 18:42medicine where like the
- 18:44metformin I take only lasts
- 18:46for a few hours.
- 18:47So you take that like during
- 18:48the day when you're awake
- 18:50and can take it.
- 18:51And then at night you take
- 18:52the insulin to kind of get
- 18:54you through the night.
- 18:57Are you getting through the night?
- 18:58Are you sleeping through the night?
- 19:00Sleeping way better.
- 19:01Okay.
- 19:03Um, my cough is actually reduced, um,
- 19:07through all of this.
- 19:09It's still there.
- 19:10And I still like cough up
- 19:11phlegm occasionally, but not like I was.
- 19:14And, uh, I was telling Jamie,
- 19:17the analysis on the phlegm came back.
- 19:20I don't understand anything it says.
- 19:21So I'll have to wait for the
- 19:23doctor to tell me what that means.
- 19:26Um,
- 19:28I hate that.
- 19:29I just want, Dash,
- 19:31I hope this new doctor gets
- 19:33you some answers.
- 19:34Like,
- 19:34you need to get to the bottom of this.
- 19:36This has gone on for far too long.
- 19:38I want to answer.
- 19:41Kenneth says, did they say what caused it?
- 19:44They say you can't know what causes AFib.
- 19:48Like it,
- 19:48it is the most common irregular
- 19:50heartbeat in the world.
- 19:52Millions of people have it
- 19:53and you don't know why it happens.
- 19:55And I can tell you the
- 19:57amount of people that have
- 19:58reached out to me who have
- 19:59it has blown me away.
- 20:03Um, the amount of DMS I've gotten,
- 20:06the amount of well wishes I've gotten,
- 20:09I am, I'm, I mean,
- 20:12I like cried this afternoon.
- 20:13I think CrossFit sent me a card.
- 20:19Wishing me well.
- 20:23Unreal, unreal.
- 20:24And I appreciate each and
- 20:25every one of the messages.
- 20:26They mean the world to me.
- 20:29But these people that have
- 20:30gone through what I've gone
- 20:30through and know what it's
- 20:32like and are on the other side,
- 20:34those messages mean so much
- 20:37to me because they're
- 20:38giving me the confidence
- 20:39that in a few weeks I should be better.
- 20:44So what's your routine like during the day,
- 20:46the last couple of days?
- 20:47Are you at home?
- 20:49So I got home Tuesday night.
- 20:53Basically,
- 20:54it is... I have not been back to work.
- 20:57And the only thing normal
- 20:59I've done is today these two shows.
- 21:01With Jason Grubb this
- 21:02morning and this one tonight.
- 21:04Everything else is just get
- 21:06through the day.
- 21:07Yesterday, I...
- 21:10Here we go, cheesy me.
- 21:12Before all this happened,
- 21:13I bought my wife Lego flowers,
- 21:16and then I went to the
- 21:17hospital and couldn't get them made.
- 21:19So yesterday I was putting them together,
- 21:20and it helped me so much
- 21:22just to clear my mind,
- 21:23just to do something with my fingers.
- 21:26And I know it sounds juvenile,
- 21:27but it just helped.
- 21:31So I'm trying to do more
- 21:33puzzly stuff during the day
- 21:35when I'm awake,
- 21:36just to keep my mind off of things.
- 21:40but yeah.
- 21:41Are you able to like go for
- 21:43a walk and let's say with
- 21:45the dog or anything?
- 21:46I do not want the heart
- 21:47elevated at all until they
- 21:49figure this out.
- 21:53Yeah.
- 21:53I'm pretty much on like a bed rest.
- 21:55Yeah.
- 21:59Well, we're glad to see you back today.
- 22:02Yeah.
- 22:03It's good to be back.
- 22:04Uh,
- 22:04but the grub interview did take it out
- 22:06of me.
- 22:07Um,
- 22:10But thank goodness he talks a lot.
- 22:12I know that was said in the
- 22:14comments earlier because it
- 22:16did give me time to kind of
- 22:17recoup the voice while he
- 22:19was talking to be able to ask questions,
- 22:22but.
- 22:25yeah yeah you you have so
- 22:28many people praying for you
- 22:30right and I know you're
- 22:31getting those messages but
- 22:32yeah everyone's been behind
- 22:34you uh you've seen the
- 22:36posts you've seen the other
- 22:37channels speaking about you
- 22:40so yeah just know that
- 22:41people are here for you um
- 22:44Yeah.
- 22:44We,
- 22:44we are praying that this doctor figures
- 22:46some things out and we get
- 22:47to the bottom of all of this.
- 22:48It's really got me.
- 22:50So the other,
- 22:50the thing about the doctors and all that,
- 22:52like, I'm just pissed off.
- 22:53I just want to,
- 22:54now I'm in a mode where get me,
- 22:57get me back to like
- 22:58function and let me kick some ass.
- 23:01Right.
- 23:01That's just where I want to be now.
- 23:03I want, like,
- 23:04I have all these prescriptions.
- 23:06Let's start checking those
- 23:07off and throwing them in a trash.
- 23:09Like, I want to like,
- 23:09just get rid of them all.
- 23:11And it gives me a goal to
- 23:13like shoot for let's take
- 23:15nine down to seven.
- 23:16Let's take seven down to
- 23:17five and let's go.
- 23:18Yep.
- 23:23Yep.
- 23:24So, so that's it.
- 23:28Well, the channel, if you want more,
- 23:30more delving into this,
- 23:31Scott's going to go over it
- 23:32with Cheryl tomorrow.
- 23:33So there'll be even more in-depth talk.
- 23:36So join, get some more background and, um,
- 23:40Yeah, hop in on that.
- 23:42Okay,
- 23:43so I thought I'd jump in on this
- 23:47trend of...
- 23:49the versus series.
- 23:52Um, and so, and I, I have a unique,
- 23:55I think, uh, perspective in my gym of,
- 23:59I now have Haley Rolfe, a, uh,
- 24:02three time team games athlete.
- 24:04She's 18 training right beside me.
- 24:07And then I have Jim, uh,
- 24:102022 third fittest man, 65 plus, um,
- 24:14that trains next to me every single day.
- 24:16So a pretty wide array of, um,
- 24:19ages, I'd say we're both,
- 24:21we're all highly competitive.
- 24:23Um, so I want to run, you know,
- 24:25I want to shoot like once a week,
- 24:26one of our tougher workouts, um, and,
- 24:29and show people like 18 year old,
- 24:32a 40 year old and a 67 year old man, um,
- 24:36what fitness at any age looks like.
- 24:38And maybe I'll occasionally
- 24:39get one of like my regular
- 24:41class members in there.
- 24:42So you can even see a
- 24:44general population person
- 24:46competing alongside us.
- 24:48Um,
- 24:49I don't know.
- 24:49I don't know if this will pick up or not.
- 24:52I've gotten quite a few
- 24:54comments today that say
- 24:54they love this idea.
- 24:55I know Taylor Self is doing
- 24:59it or Jason Hopper is
- 24:59throwing his weekly ones up.
- 25:02We'll see.
- 25:02Look at Jim's Toto bars.
- 25:04Somebody call him out on that.
- 25:07No rep.
- 25:11Would you do the open with
- 25:13them live or do you want to
- 25:15keep your scores still
- 25:16because it's competitive with the
- 25:21I don't know how we'll do
- 25:22the open Haley and I will
- 25:23probably so Haley and I are
- 25:24going to try to also go
- 25:25team with two other guys so
- 25:31we may keep that like not
- 25:33post it until like Monday
- 25:35but we will probably do the
- 25:36workout together so there
- 25:37will probably be video of
- 25:39Haley and I doing the
- 25:40workout together and Jim
- 25:42usually runs opposite of me
- 25:43because I need to really
- 25:46walk him through some things
- 25:48Scott knows that.
- 25:51Yeah, Jim is no ordinary 67-year-old.
- 25:54He is incredibly fit.
- 25:56His engine is amazing.
- 25:58He's
- 26:03He's similar to me in the
- 26:05top-end strength isn't quite there.
- 26:08The difference, I'd say,
- 26:09is he also doesn't have
- 26:11some top-end gymnastic skills.
- 26:15He doesn't have ring
- 26:17muscle-ups or a bar muscle-up.
- 26:20He can't hold a free...
- 26:22That's what held him out
- 26:23last year from making the
- 26:24games was the freestanding
- 26:25handstand hold.
- 26:25He only got a second.
- 26:28If he would have been able
- 26:28to do three seconds,
- 26:30he would have made it.
- 26:31He just...
- 26:33his shoulder mobility is, I mean,
- 26:36we try to work on it every day, but yeah.
- 26:38So if you guys like it, hop on the channel,
- 26:40hop on that video and
- 26:42thumbs up it and comment so
- 26:44that it helps the algorithm.
- 26:45And I'll try to put more of these out.
- 26:49Where do we find it?
- 26:50Is it on the Clydesdale media one?
- 26:52It is.
- 26:53Okay.
- 26:53So it's going to be there.
- 26:54And will it be, you said once a week?
- 26:57Yeah.
- 26:58And so and I don't know, like,
- 27:00I want to pick a workout
- 27:01that's like under 14 minutes.
- 27:02So it's not so long.
- 27:03This happened to be a 20 minute AMRAP.
- 27:05And I ended up shortening
- 27:06the middle like five to 18 minutes.
- 27:09I like sped it way up.
- 27:12You can see it's started.
- 27:15Well, no, it hasn't kicked up yet.
- 27:18But yeah,
- 27:18because I want to talk through
- 27:19the workout.
- 27:20And I don't want us to sit
- 27:21there and talk for 15 minutes.
- 27:22So I'm hoping to find a little bit.
- 27:25Yes.
- 27:26Some shorter ones might be a
- 27:27little bit more.
- 27:28You know,
- 27:29who wants... I don't know who
- 27:30wants to watch.
- 27:31Andrew,
- 27:31you got to comment on the video and
- 27:33call Jim out.
- 27:37Yeah.
- 27:37I don't... You know,
- 27:38we'll see how long... They
- 27:39won't all be this long.
- 27:41We'll try to find some shorter workouts.
- 27:43We'll try to find... If you
- 27:44go and watch this,
- 27:45Haley and I talk about
- 27:47competing with each other.
- 27:48So...
- 27:51I will try to find a barbell
- 27:54centric workout that Haley
- 27:55has a much better shot at
- 27:56beating me at that.
- 27:58We've done a lot of
- 27:59gymnastics workouts lately
- 28:00that give me the upper edge.
- 28:03So I'm sure she's itching to
- 28:05beat me in a workout.
- 28:10She's 18.
- 28:10So she's aged up now this year.
- 28:13Yes.
- 28:14Yeah, she's aged up.
- 28:14Yep.
- 28:15Which so she's not going to
- 28:17be quite competitive enough to make
- 28:19A semi, I don't think.
- 28:20So I think that's why we've
- 28:23decided to try to put together a team.
- 28:24I mean, it would,
- 28:25it'd be a miracle if we made semis,
- 28:27but it'd be fun to go as a group.
- 28:31So, and Azariah Price is our,
- 28:33one of our other guys,
- 28:35also a team member.
- 28:36But it's also cool that the
- 28:39masters are able to do the
- 28:41whole... Because there are
- 28:43different times of the year,
- 28:44you have your own path,
- 28:45and then you can also do team.
- 28:47Yeah, I know.
- 28:48I love that.
- 28:49I thought that was cool.
- 28:52Ken,
- 28:53the best part of the video was the
- 28:56DBAB discussion.
- 28:57I don't even know what we discussed.
- 28:59What is DBAB?
- 29:00Does anyone else know what DBAB is?
- 29:01Discussion.
- 29:04Discussion.
- 29:06I think it says auto-correct.
- 29:09He put that in the comments too.
- 29:12Oh,
- 29:12like just our discussion in general was
- 29:16your favorite part of the video?
- 29:20I'm guessing it.
- 29:23Oh, yeah, we did say don't be a bitch.
- 29:26We both were like,
- 29:28I was telling myself don't be a bitch.
- 29:32Got it, got it.
- 29:35The one thing I also want to
- 29:35put out here is Jamie did this on her own,
- 29:39and it is awesome.
- 29:40I love every bit of it.
- 29:42But one thing we want to
- 29:43focus on is all the other
- 29:45people that are doing these
- 29:45types of workouts are men.
- 29:4750% of the sport is women,
- 29:50and it's just as popular.
- 29:52And maybe Jamie and Carolyn
- 29:55do a head-to-head on one of these weeks.
- 29:59Who knows?
- 30:01It's limitless what we can do with this.
- 30:04Right.
- 30:05For sure.
- 30:06Yeah.
- 30:06And I wouldn't,
- 30:06I was considering that too.
- 30:08Like if, if this starts to pick up,
- 30:09like I was thinking that
- 30:10like I could send Carol in
- 30:11a workout I'm going to do,
- 30:13we can both do it even if
- 30:14it's a day or two apart,
- 30:15but I could take the videos
- 30:16and put them next to each
- 30:18other on the screen and we can show that.
- 30:21Yeah.
- 30:21Um, I'm, I'm totally up for any other,
- 30:25like,
- 30:25and not to like try to do a fit
- 30:27where it would just be like,
- 30:28here's a workout and we can
- 30:29analyze it and just, you know, over it.
- 30:34Like we can come on the show,
- 30:35you guys can talk over it,
- 30:37how it felt for each of you
- 30:38differently with your skill set.
- 30:43There's a lot of men's versions of this.
- 30:46We need to get the women their shine too.
- 30:50And teens and masters.
- 30:51Yeah.
- 30:54And so...
- 30:56I think we could do a lot.
- 30:57You know, we,
- 30:58we did the whole legend series.
- 31:00We have a ton of masters
- 31:02contacts that we could do
- 31:03the same thing with them.
- 31:04I think it'd be cool.
- 31:08And I, and you know,
- 31:09thank you so much for you
- 31:10did all this while I was in the hospital.
- 31:13Yeah, I didn't.
- 31:13And guys, I threw this up last night.
- 31:16I was trying to not bother Scott.
- 31:18He's like,
- 31:19just put it on your own channel.
- 31:20I was like, that won't be the same.
- 31:22And I'm trying to do it all alone.
- 31:24And I'm not super proficient
- 31:25with all of this software yet.
- 31:28So I did my best here to put a draft out.
- 31:31And we'll see if it gets some likes,
- 31:32shares.
- 31:33Um, yeah, if you guys like share it,
- 31:35I might reshare my story in
- 31:36my Instagram and you guys
- 31:38can reshare that and get more,
- 31:40more views here.
- 31:41It would totally help.
- 31:42Like you guys heard this
- 31:43morning with Jason,
- 31:44it's all about the
- 31:46algorithm and getting
- 31:47YouTube to pick up on things.
- 31:48So you guys can help.
- 31:50We'll keep pushing out this kind of stuff.
- 31:52Yeah.
- 31:53Cause it's the comments or
- 31:54something that you have to put, right?
- 31:55Like we're always doing in
- 31:56the chat for the, like the live chat,
- 31:58but then once the video goes up,
- 32:00if there's not any in the comments,
- 32:02then it's
- 32:04Right?
- 32:04It doesn't bring it up as much.
- 32:05Is that what happens?
- 32:07Yeah, I know.
- 32:08That's part of it.
- 32:10It's hard figuring out
- 32:11YouTube's algorithm.
- 32:12I'll say that.
- 32:15So yeah,
- 32:16look for another one of those next week.
- 32:20But moving on.
- 32:23Don fall has said that a
- 32:25significant amount of money
- 32:26will be pulled from the
- 32:27games team and used to
- 32:29support the affiliates.
- 32:31What does this mean for the support?
- 32:34What are the affiliates asking for?
- 32:41I mean,
- 32:41I guess we don't know yet because
- 32:43they haven't announced any
- 32:44prize money or broadcast deals.
- 32:48I'm fine if they want to
- 32:49take money out as long as
- 32:50there's sponsorships that
- 32:52are coming in to fill the
- 32:53money that would be needed.
- 32:55you know, given by CrossFit.
- 32:57Because if CrossFit can save money and,
- 33:00you know,
- 33:00allow other players to enter the space,
- 33:03that's, I mean, that's great.
- 33:07But if there's no other
- 33:08players plus CrossFit removing,
- 33:10then that sucks for the sport side of it.
- 33:12Because that's, you know,
- 33:14a huge entertainment part of CrossFit.
- 33:18And it'd be sad.
- 33:21Well, I feel like they've already...
- 33:24taken money out of the sport
- 33:25by dropping the semi-finals
- 33:28right and giving and and
- 33:29that's a good choice we've
- 33:31all we all think that
- 33:32that's a good idea to give
- 33:33it back to the local comps
- 33:35um syndicate running their
- 33:38theirs um so there's
- 33:41already money that they've
- 33:43saved on the table
- 33:45and where so where are they
- 33:46pulling there's pulling
- 33:47more money from all the
- 33:49influx of open and quarters
- 33:52and they're keeping that
- 33:53and push putting it towards
- 33:54affiliates like I don't
- 33:55quite understand like if
- 33:56the money is coming in for
- 33:57the sports side that needs
- 33:59to be supporting the sports
- 34:01side because that's clearly
- 34:01where people are showing
- 34:02you they want their money
- 34:03they're putting their money
- 34:05where their mouth is and if
- 34:06that's where they want it
- 34:07then you need to keep
- 34:08investing in the sports side um
- 34:11don't know what the
- 34:11affiliates are even asking
- 34:13for more more content that
- 34:15isn't game centric I don't
- 34:16know I mean yes they they
- 34:19should be you know pumping
- 34:21out content you know daily
- 34:24essentially of affiliates
- 34:25and uh you know like
- 34:28basically what you're doing
- 34:28like you know older members
- 34:31uh younger masters teenagers
- 34:35just more content in general,
- 34:37people from all over the world,
- 34:38not just in the States.
- 34:40You know,
- 34:40people have different backgrounds,
- 34:43you know,
- 34:43just pumping out just content constantly.
- 34:45So I don't know if they just
- 34:46need more people to be
- 34:47traveling around the world.
- 34:48I know that like the money
- 34:49from the CrossFit open and
- 34:51stuff like it is good.
- 34:54good amount of money with
- 34:55the quarterfinals,
- 34:55but there's still like all
- 34:56those expenses for the semifinals,
- 34:58for the, for the buildings,
- 34:59for the broadcast, the games,
- 35:01like it's still not enough.
- 35:01They're still taking a lot of money from,
- 35:03I'm assuming from the L
- 35:05ones and everything else
- 35:07outside of the sport.
- 35:08So I'm sure they're using up
- 35:10all of the sport money already.
- 35:11Plus some of the other level
- 35:14one stuff that they have
- 35:15money from there.
- 35:15And I'm sure they just want
- 35:16to be like a little bit less,
- 35:18but I don't know what that
- 35:19significant amount is going to be.
- 35:21And yeah,
- 35:22how that's going to affect
- 35:23which is weird because you
- 35:25have the teenage games and
- 35:28the masters the same
- 35:29weekend to me that just
- 35:30made it more expensive
- 35:31because now two broadcast
- 35:33deals two it you know
- 35:37wouldn't that be more
- 35:38expensive this is the one
- 35:40thing that about all of
- 35:41this and this is further
- 35:43down in the notes but we
- 35:44can jump to it because it
- 35:45kind of does coincide like
- 35:47I don't understand when you
- 35:48say you're trying to save
- 35:49money in the games because
- 35:52it's so expensive.
- 35:54And then you split into
- 35:56three different venues.
- 35:58Now you got to pay for three venues.
- 35:59You got to pay for three broadcasts.
- 36:01You got to pay for three
- 36:03shipments of equipment to
- 36:05be sent to three different places.
- 36:10And then you're requiring
- 36:12triple the sponsors, right?
- 36:15to show to attend or chip in
- 36:18when it could just be the
- 36:19one location it would make
- 36:20more sense to get like few
- 36:22bigger sponsors in a bigger
- 36:24monetary sense um I i this
- 36:27is just mind-boggling to me
- 36:29there's no way this is
- 36:30saving money and to me it
- 36:34like the biggest thing
- 36:36comes down to again this is
- 36:38further down in the notes
- 36:39but like the athlete kit we
- 36:41talked about this with uh
- 36:44this morning,
- 36:46is such a giant draw for athletes.
- 36:51You're talking about the
- 36:51swag bag stuff from the games?
- 36:53Yeah.
- 36:55That's the only reason I
- 36:55wanted to go to the games in 2019.
- 36:57That is the only reason.
- 36:58I was like, oh my god,
- 36:59I get all these pairs of shoes,
- 37:01all this clothes.
- 37:02I wanted to make the cut
- 37:03because I had more clothes.
- 37:05That was my goal to make the cut was like,
- 37:07oh,
- 37:08I can enter into the prize money and I
- 37:10just got a new set of
- 37:11outfits with my name on it.
- 37:14That's how it was.
- 37:17I was going there for the kit.
- 37:20That is what I've been trying to say.
- 37:21There are numerous.
- 37:23I mean,
- 37:24you're talking in the hundreds of
- 37:25athletes that are just
- 37:26vying to get to that break
- 37:29into that spot just to show up.
- 37:32I know people say this all the time.
- 37:36If you aren't telling
- 37:37yourself you're going there to win,
- 37:38there are lots of athletes
- 37:40that that's not in their mind.
- 37:41They are just going there to make it,
- 37:44to win it, to get the kit.
- 37:47They have put up with years
- 37:48and years of striving for this, attending,
- 37:52spending money on other
- 37:53local comps or traveling to
- 37:56mid-level comps just to get
- 37:58the experience.
- 37:59to walk away with little to
- 38:00no prizes or swags at these
- 38:03to tiptoe their way into
- 38:05the games just to get the
- 38:06swag back that is the first
- 38:10time at least the first
- 38:11time that's that's it like
- 38:13that's that's what's
- 38:14drawing these people to to
- 38:15keep buying for that spot
- 38:17ariel lowen told everyone
- 38:19that just about to say
- 38:21that's why right that's why
- 38:24she went to grant games
- 38:25just to get the freaking placard
- 38:29Yeah.
- 38:29I was like, yeah, like, dude, that's,
- 38:32that's the fun.
- 38:32Like once after a while, you know,
- 38:35the first year you're
- 38:36willing to spend that money
- 38:37and you're like, I don't care if I'm,
- 38:39you know, out 2000, 3000.
- 38:41Cause I got all this clothes.
- 38:43I got these signs,
- 38:44everything after a while.
- 38:45You're like, okay,
- 38:46I don't need the clothes.
- 38:46I actually just,
- 38:47I need the support for the competition.
- 38:49But for those initial times
- 38:51that you like qualify,
- 38:52those kids are super important.
- 38:54Those are memories.
- 38:56like I went through my
- 38:57clothes the other maybe a
- 38:58month ago I couldn't throw
- 38:59away any of the things that
- 39:00I had from like the first
- 39:02games I'm like no there's
- 39:04you're attached that
- 39:05clothes like that that pair
- 39:06of pants I've worn this
- 39:07event this it's like it's
- 39:10memories yeah it I've
- 39:16spent like days like stressing over this.
- 39:19And when I heard Bob say on
- 39:21the podcast the other day
- 39:24with Jason that they
- 39:26announced the gear sponsor
- 39:30and for the athlete kit for masters.
- 39:33And it's someone we've never heard of.
- 39:36They don't have bags.
- 39:38It's not Northern tool, but close.
- 39:41They don't have bags.
- 39:42They don't have shoes.
- 39:43So we, so we're,
- 39:47Huh?
- 39:47Will Gold Rock do it for the Masters?
- 39:49No, no, no.
- 39:51We're getting so we are
- 39:52going to be exactly as I expected.
- 39:55The redheaded stepchild of
- 39:56this entire thing.
- 39:57We're going to go get a
- 39:58couple of shirts and a couple of shorts,
- 39:59which is exactly what we
- 40:00got at MFC and Legends.
- 40:02So what is it?
- 40:04What is other than maybe the
- 40:06top two or three that have
- 40:07a chance of winning the podium money?
- 40:10What is it that's going to
- 40:11draw an athlete to go to
- 40:13the Masters games as
- 40:14opposed to Legends in December?
- 40:16If I if I personally lived
- 40:18like at this point,
- 40:19I might as well not go and
- 40:20I might as well just go to
- 40:21MFC because I can drive there.
- 40:23It's cheaper.
- 40:27I'm going to get the exact
- 40:27same thing out of it.
- 40:29I'm going to get an outfit and.
- 40:33You know,
- 40:33you're not going to get as many
- 40:34people from South America
- 40:36or Europe or Australia like
- 40:38traveling like that.
- 40:40for the Masters as well.
- 40:43It's already been separated, right?
- 40:46Those athletes were coming, you know,
- 40:49because they were competing at the games.
- 40:51Then they got to watch and, you know,
- 40:53watch the individuals, watch the teams or,
- 40:55you know, go around the vendor village,
- 40:57et cetera.
- 40:58but now it's just the masters.
- 41:01So it's like,
- 41:01what's going to draw all of
- 41:03these athletes in or the
- 41:05teenagers or the adaptive division too.
- 41:06I mean,
- 41:07even the adaptive divisions at the
- 41:09same time as the SoCal, uh,
- 41:11water Palooza.
- 41:12So all three, uh,
- 41:14Of the split off games.
- 41:17Are clashing.
- 41:19With like something.
- 41:20With each other.
- 41:20Or with another major event.
- 41:24Which is just unfortunate for the vendors.
- 41:26Unfortunate for the athletes.
- 41:28Everything.
- 41:29I wish.
- 41:30I wish somehow.
- 41:32Somebody was willing to.
- 41:36Get that.
- 41:37Through to HQ.
- 41:40That like.
- 41:41The athlete kit is.
- 41:43one of the most important
- 41:45things like and
- 41:46unfortunately like speaking
- 41:47with Jason like he doesn't seem to
- 41:49It doesn't matter to him.
- 41:50Well,
- 41:50it doesn't matter because you've been
- 41:52there four or five times
- 41:53and you have years of gear.
- 41:54And so like,
- 41:55it doesn't matter to you anymore,
- 41:57but it does matter to a lot of people.
- 42:00And a lot of people who are like 32, 33,
- 42:03who didn't make it and are
- 42:04going to like excited to
- 42:05turn 35 to go that way.
- 42:07I mean, that was always my whole thing.
- 42:09Like I have spent years just
- 42:11trying to make it just to
- 42:12get the kit and to have the
- 42:15exact same thing that everyone else had.
- 42:17And yeah,
- 42:18it's four three four grand
- 42:20easily worth of stuff I
- 42:22mean they got everyone got
- 42:23an ice bath last year we're
- 42:24not going to get anything
- 42:25like that like mine's my
- 42:28new kitchen table because
- 42:29it won't fit on my balcony
- 42:31that's my that's my kitchen
- 42:35Yeah, I don't know.
- 42:36It's just, it's heartbreaking for me.
- 42:41So the one thing I don't
- 42:42want to get lost in this is
- 42:47I've been a big supporter of Don Fall.
- 42:50I like him a lot.
- 42:52He lost me on this one.
- 42:54Okay.
- 42:56And in the notes I put, like,
- 42:58what do the affiliates want
- 43:00with this money?
- 43:01What do they feel they're missing?
- 43:03And then you have people
- 43:04like Dale King coming on
- 43:05kettlebells and cocktails saying,
- 43:08it's not CrossFit's
- 43:09responsibility to bring
- 43:10people into my doors.
- 43:12That's my job.
- 43:14That's what I'm supposed to do.
- 43:16He,
- 43:17what he wants is the stuff he can't do.
- 43:19Like the legal representation of the name,
- 43:23the make sure you protect
- 43:25the brand so that it's there for me.
- 43:31It just feels like CrossFit
- 43:34HQ in this move and in this
- 43:37announcement is going very Orange Theory,
- 43:41very that corporate gym mentality.
- 43:48And I don't think that's
- 43:49what the affiliates want.
- 43:51And you can't count dollar for dollar,
- 43:5450-50 split.
- 43:56They're two different entities.
- 43:58And I think earlier in the comments,
- 44:00Kenneth said,
- 44:01I bet you if you took a poll
- 44:03of people who got into CrossFit,
- 44:0575% of them did it because
- 44:07they watched the games on
- 44:08ESPN and went to a gym.
- 44:11Which again goes back to
- 44:12bringing people within the gym.
- 44:13I don't know how well Dale
- 44:15King's gym is doing,
- 44:16but at the end of the day,
- 44:18affiliates still want...
- 44:21CrossFit to still help in some way,
- 44:23you know,
- 44:25bring a better reputation to the
- 44:27word CrossFit in terms of
- 44:28safety and coaching and stuff like that.
- 44:31So I think that's where the
- 44:32money needs to go.
- 44:32They posted something today
- 44:34with safety and injuries.
- 44:39You know,
- 44:39it's protecting the name of
- 44:41CrossFit to bring more
- 44:42people to the affiliates.
- 44:44It's still the games and the
- 44:47Netflix documentaries or if
- 44:49they want to do other types
- 44:50of documentaries to continue to expose,
- 44:55you know,
- 44:55people outside of our population
- 44:57to CrossFit to then bring
- 44:59them to their local
- 45:00affiliates and stuff like that.
- 45:01So, I mean...
- 45:03It's both.
- 45:04It's what CrossFit can do in
- 45:05terms of the name.
- 45:07And indirectly,
- 45:08it's bringing people to their affiliates.
- 45:10They still want more members.
- 45:13So my big overarching question on this is,
- 45:15do you think this means at
- 45:16some point they try to
- 45:19split it off again?
- 45:21I don't think so.
- 45:24Like between the health,
- 45:25like CrossFit for health
- 45:27and then CrossFit sport, you mean?
- 45:29Yeah.
- 45:35I hope not.
- 45:36I don't know.
- 45:37I think, I think they're, they're related.
- 45:39I think they're, they're different,
- 45:42but they're, they're, they're together.
- 45:47But for me, it's just like, it's,
- 45:49it's the name.
- 45:49I still, you know, if I, if I'm teaching,
- 45:53let's say kids and I say
- 45:54the word CrossFit,
- 45:55they're still kids that
- 45:56even in this generation now,
- 45:57because they watch a lot of
- 45:58bodybuilding and, um, you know,
- 46:02and they're like, Oh,
- 46:02CrossFit and kipping pull-ups and,
- 46:04Like there's still a
- 46:05negative like view of the
- 46:08word CrossFit and intensity and injuries.
- 46:12So that's where I think we
- 46:14need to continue like the CrossFit to,
- 46:19you know,
- 46:19push to protect our name and to
- 46:23take away all of these
- 46:24ideas that's on the
- 46:25internet or just word of
- 46:27mouth from people that are
- 46:29not fans of CrossFit.
- 46:31But to separate them, I don't know,
- 46:33because I think the
- 46:36intensity part is still
- 46:38getting everyone fitter with age.
- 46:43The Masters population is huge in CrossFit,
- 46:46and they still can look up
- 46:47to someone within their age group,
- 46:48which is really cool to see
- 46:50what's possible at that age.
- 46:53I don't know.
- 46:53I don't think you can separate fully.
- 46:58I don't know.
- 46:59In one hand, I want to say yes,
- 47:02it should be separated
- 47:03because they clearly can't,
- 47:07they seem to not be able to
- 47:10see the difference.
- 47:11And I would almost prefer
- 47:13them to not have any aspect
- 47:16of the open money or anything,
- 47:19and that all just be a separate entity.
- 47:21And if the sport
- 47:24wants to support the sport
- 47:25then it will and the money
- 47:27will go where it should go
- 47:28and in that aspect like
- 47:31they need to be separate so
- 47:32they can't intertwine the
- 47:34funds and we don't get this
- 47:35muddling of well it's just
- 47:36costing us too much money
- 47:38is it because I mean I feel
- 47:40like if the games is truly
- 47:41sustainable if that's if
- 47:42people are going to pay for
- 47:43it then there's money to be
- 47:45made there in some fashion
- 47:47and somebody would pick it
- 47:48up maybe it'd be rogue I have no idea
- 47:51Um, but in one way, in one aspect,
- 47:55I almost feel like it does
- 47:56need to be separated
- 47:57because we just keep getting this.
- 47:58It costs too much.
- 47:59Well,
- 47:59then you shouldn't be in charge of it.
- 48:00It's like government doing anything.
- 48:06Yeah.
- 48:06I mean, yeah.
- 48:07If they, if they have the support, I mean,
- 48:08it seemed like we were
- 48:10heading that direction, like in 2018,
- 48:12like we were going to get
- 48:13these big deals or something, um,
- 48:16to cover the sport.
- 48:17And then we just kind of
- 48:18lost all the media.
- 48:19Right.
- 48:20I mean, if it can work, sure.
- 48:24Where has the buildup been to the open?
- 48:28And Instagram here or there,
- 48:29it seems like HQ just neglects YouTube.
- 48:33I've, yeah, I've seen a few, I don't know.
- 48:37I'd say every few days I see
- 48:38a post on like Facebook or Instagram, um,
- 48:43showing,
- 48:43showing just a general member
- 48:46doing the open in their gym, um, with,
- 48:48you know,
- 48:49an inspirational message of like,
- 48:50this is why we do the openness.
- 48:52I've, I've had a lot of those.
- 48:53I've shared them to my own
- 48:55private team page.
- 48:56Um, so they're,
- 48:57they're popping up on my end.
- 48:58Or they're reposting
- 49:00previous head-to-head
- 49:01matchups I've seen a lot.
- 49:03Those are the ones that seem
- 49:03to be better on the views.
- 49:05I was looking at some of the
- 49:06views that they've had.
- 49:08Those ones are doing well.
- 49:09Like the throwbacks of, let's say,
- 49:11Pat Delner versus someone.
- 49:14Yeah.
- 49:15Yeah.
- 49:16That would be my complaint
- 49:17with their YouTube is their
- 49:19YouTube has become just a
- 49:20retread of something
- 49:22they've done in the past.
- 49:23They're still getting views though.
- 49:25Like, don't get me wrong.
- 49:26Show in the past open announcements,
- 49:29they're doing well.
- 49:31And here's my other beef is
- 49:33if you've signed up for the open before,
- 49:35and I know Kenneth hasn't.
- 49:36So like, because of everything going on,
- 49:39I've not signed up for the open.
- 49:41I get a daily reminder that
- 49:43I need to sign up because I
- 49:45signed up before like every single day.
- 49:48But I'm not who you should
- 49:50be marketing to.
- 49:51Right?
- 49:54Like how much are you
- 49:55investing in retention of
- 49:57the people you have as
- 49:59opposed to getting more?
- 50:00Trying to find new people.
- 50:02Yeah.
- 50:03I don't know.
- 50:04The few things that I've
- 50:05seen on Facebook seem to be
- 50:07the direction I think they
- 50:07should be going.
- 50:09maybe it's not getting enough traction.
- 50:11Maybe again, algorithms,
- 50:13I don't know what's not
- 50:14getting that out to new people.
- 50:19Maybe CrossFit should be
- 50:20sending stuff to affiliate owners on,
- 50:27you know,
- 50:27send these to all of your members.
- 50:29Right.
- 50:30Not just the ones that I've signed up,
- 50:31but these are like, yeah,
- 50:35don't know why you should be
- 50:36doing the open what what it
- 50:37can be good for for the
- 50:38following year like just
- 50:39like certain templates for
- 50:41the affiliates so that they
- 50:42can then grab that
- 50:43information and then boom
- 50:45they send it to them just
- 50:46to facilitate some of the
- 50:49that side for the members
- 50:50like that could be
- 50:51something that hq could be
- 50:52doing you know um I know
- 50:55for um like crossfit canada
- 50:57um our affiliate manager
- 50:59sent a few uh like
- 51:02is it through canvas stuff
- 51:04of why you're doing the open?
- 51:06And like,
- 51:07she sent us a few things to the
- 51:09affiliate owners just to
- 51:10share on our pages or stuff
- 51:13or to members.
- 51:14Like, I think that idea is good.
- 51:17Yeah.
- 51:21I just, I love Kenneth to lap.
- 51:25He always puts that little
- 51:26sneaky backhand compliment in for us.
- 51:31We are talking about Colton next, Ken.
- 51:34Here we go.
- 51:34His first ever podcast?
- 51:37Yes.
- 51:39His first ever podcast was
- 51:41on this channel.
- 51:43That's when he made it.
- 51:44That's when you knew he made it,
- 51:46right there.
- 51:47Yep.
- 51:49Good job, Scott, with that one.
- 51:51You know how to pick them.
- 51:54um okay so we've just got
- 51:56announced that week two
- 51:58announcement is going to be
- 52:00justin madero's first
- 52:01colton mertens um we
- 52:04already know that colton is
- 52:06doing the taylor self first
- 52:08the world uh week three
- 52:11with um taylor so is that
- 52:15is that a lot of
- 52:16head-to-head competition is
- 52:17that like an unnecessary
- 52:18amount of anxiety you think carolyn
- 52:22No, because I think the Open doesn't, like,
- 52:26doesn't matter.
- 52:28You know, it's 25%.
- 52:29And then the thing that's
- 52:31different this year is the
- 52:32quarterfinals are pushed
- 52:33back for the individuals
- 52:34about a month after the Open.
- 52:37So it's actually fine if you
- 52:39want to grab a little bit
- 52:40more intensity and, you know,
- 52:44do the Open announcement,
- 52:45go with your buddies and go
- 52:47head-to-head there.
- 52:48Because I think that's good
- 52:49practice for then a month later-ish.
- 52:52for the quarterfinals.
- 52:53I don't think it like, you know,
- 52:54before it was like a week
- 52:56off and then boom, you know,
- 52:57you're already almost like getting,
- 53:01you know, ready for that.
- 53:02But no, I think,
- 53:03I think it's fine for him.
- 53:05Yeah.
- 53:05I Colton seems to be,
- 53:07he'd like thrives in these
- 53:08situations and he seems to
- 53:10be grabbing at all of these
- 53:11opportunities.
- 53:13He's eating up this, this,
- 53:16Which is strange for him
- 53:17because he doesn't seem
- 53:19like a sociable guy,
- 53:20but he's taking all of
- 53:23these handouts that are coming his way.
- 53:25If there's an opportunity,
- 53:26he's grabbing it.
- 53:27He's kind of like showing,
- 53:29I don't know if it's like a
- 53:30new personality or his
- 53:32personality from before,
- 53:33or he's just more buying
- 53:35into this character that
- 53:37he's kind of been given in
- 53:39the CrossFit space of that
- 53:41put your head down and
- 53:43you're working hard and
- 53:44that farm boy type.
- 53:46attitude and you guys are all, you know,
- 53:50crying on the floor and I'm fine.
- 53:52Yeah.
- 53:53He's buying into that.
- 53:54And I think that's a
- 53:55separation for him in terms
- 53:57of sponsorship.
- 53:58You know,
- 53:58you have to find if that's working,
- 54:01find it and run with it.
- 54:03And I feel like that's what
- 54:04he's doing lately is he's
- 54:05just running away like with that type of
- 54:08And I think this is good for him.
- 54:09I was just surprised that it
- 54:10was two athletes because I
- 54:12remember Dave said it's
- 54:13going to be more than two
- 54:15and less than seven.
- 54:18Yeah.
- 54:18Then you saw two and I was like,
- 54:20is there more coming?
- 54:23I got to think,
- 54:24I got to think there's two
- 54:25females coming still.
- 54:26I want to say there's got to
- 54:27be two females,
- 54:28especially with that gold barbell.
- 54:30Yeah.
- 54:31A few events.
- 54:31I don't think that they
- 54:32would do all of those
- 54:34events just head to head.
- 54:36Justin versus Colton that
- 54:39whole day doing a few events.
- 54:40Cause I don't think that would be good.
- 54:43Maybe mentally for either of the athletes,
- 54:46you know?
- 54:47I want to ask you this, Carolyn,
- 54:49are you a chip on your shoulder athlete?
- 54:52Because Colton has always
- 54:53been a chip on his shoulder,
- 54:55but he internalized a lot of that.
- 54:57Like people said,
- 54:58he's too short to do wall balls.
- 55:00I'm doing a hundred wall
- 55:01balls a day with a 30 pound
- 55:03ball until I'm great at wall balls.
- 55:06Right.
- 55:07And it seems like all that
- 55:08internal chip is oozing out
- 55:12now into an external, like,
- 55:15stop with the talk that I can't do it.
- 55:20I've heard it for three
- 55:21years in a row that I can't get past this,
- 55:23this, or this.
- 55:25I'm going to get past this.
- 55:26Stop it.
- 55:28Do you ever go in with a
- 55:29chip on your shoulder?
- 55:30Yeah, I think so.
- 55:31I think I well,
- 55:34I'll just tell myself I'm
- 55:35just trying to prove
- 55:36certain people wrong if
- 55:37they like say certain things about me.
- 55:40I'm like, OK, well, I know what I can do.
- 55:42And it's just but I don't
- 55:43necessarily externally voice it.
- 55:45It's more just internally
- 55:47just using it as fuel to be like, OK,
- 55:49this, you know,
- 55:50I'm going to prove myself wrong.
- 55:53Like when I used to play hockey,
- 55:54I used to have a little,
- 55:56I used to write on my hockey stick on my,
- 55:59like the knob on my stick, PTW.
- 56:00It was like, prove them wrong.
- 56:02It's like, okay,
- 56:02like if I got sat on the
- 56:04bench and I was mad, I was like, okay,
- 56:05well, next shift.
- 56:06Like I just looked down my
- 56:07stick and I was like, prove them wrong.
- 56:09Like show them why you should be there.
- 56:11And it was just like,
- 56:12that was like my model,
- 56:13like in hockey all the time.
- 56:16or in sports was just like
- 56:17prove them wrong but then
- 56:18it kind of more recently
- 56:20was like okay more like
- 56:22proving me also not just
- 56:24like them so it's kind of
- 56:25like a balance a little bit
- 56:27um but yeah I'd say I have
- 56:29a chip on my shoulder
- 56:30sometimes I think it's good
- 56:32it's good I don't know what
- 56:34drives me scott I i have no
- 56:36idea I haven't figured it out either so
- 56:42Just curious.
- 56:43Yeah, I don't know.
- 56:43I'll have to do some more.
- 56:47I mean, I guess a little bit.
- 56:48I want to beat... I don't know.
- 56:51I have no idea.
- 56:52I just have an extreme competitive side.
- 56:55When you train,
- 56:56do you visualize a certain competitor?
- 57:00Like what...
- 57:02like I know like when I'm training,
- 57:04like I'm not visualizing a
- 57:05specific competitor, but I'm visualizing,
- 57:08you know,
- 57:09other people putting themselves
- 57:10in certain situations.
- 57:12It's like,
- 57:12I need to put myself here and it's like,
- 57:13I want to make it here like
- 57:16to the games or whatever.
- 57:17Like, what do you visualize, I guess,
- 57:18when you're training to keep you, I guess,
- 57:23focused or keep, you know,
- 57:25going through those dark
- 57:26places and workouts.
- 57:27Like, what do you think about just,
- 57:29just pushing yourself or what you can do?
- 57:31Or do you,
- 57:32visualize usually it's it is
- 57:34usually just myself I mean
- 57:35I will say like I'll be on
- 57:37the bike and I'll be like
- 57:39I don't picture one athlete.
- 57:41I just in my head, I'm like,
- 57:44anyone else would be suffering,
- 57:46would be willing to suffer
- 57:47worse than you are right now.
- 57:48Like shut up and don't be a
- 57:50little bitch and push.
- 57:53And I'll like,
- 57:55I try really hard to do that.
- 57:56If it's like a heavy barbell,
- 57:57like step up and grab this barbell.
- 58:00Like other people are
- 58:01stronger than you and
- 58:02they're already approaching the barbell.
- 58:03But I don't have like a specific,
- 58:06I don't know that anyone
- 58:07has ever like been like,
- 58:09you suck and, and I'm going to, and then,
- 58:13and then I'm like,
- 58:13want to prove them wrong.
- 58:14I don't, I don't know.
- 58:16So it's just a general population.
- 58:18Like I just,
- 58:20in any situation I envision
- 58:21like people and they're
- 58:23just doing better than me and I want,
- 58:25and I need to push harder
- 58:26and try to catch up or whatever.
- 58:28So I think what I envision is just like,
- 58:32what is the cut line?
- 58:33And I envision like when I'm
- 58:34in a pace where,
- 58:36this is the pace I feel like
- 58:38a games athlete would be doing it at,
- 58:40or this is, you know, an elite score.
- 58:42And I'm just kind of chasing
- 58:43what I kind of visualize as
- 58:46that elite score.
- 58:47And it's like, I want to be elite.
- 58:49This is what I have to do.
- 58:50And I'm just trying to like chase that.
- 58:52Cause I'm often just training by myself.
- 58:54So that's,
- 58:55I'm just trying to picture some
- 58:57sort of line in front of me.
- 59:00It's like, this is where I should be.
- 59:02Yeah, exactly.
- 59:03I'd say that's very similar.
- 59:04Speaking of, I put you in my top 25.
- 59:07Scott, did you finish your poll?
- 59:11I did not.
- 59:12I wondered.
- 59:13Try to open it tonight
- 59:14because I actually just
- 59:15submitted mine earlier today.
- 59:17And I know it said yesterday.
- 59:18Let's see if you can submit it tonight.
- 59:20Oh, they're redoing that.
- 59:22Yeah, they did a February poll.
- 59:23And yes, you were in my top 25.
- 59:24Nice.
- 59:26Yeah, check that.
- 59:31Okay, so...
- 59:34athletes coming back after a drug ban,
- 59:37the Heinrich Oscarsson,
- 59:41they just said he's coming back.
- 59:42Should these athletes be
- 59:43tested prior to coming back
- 59:45or throughout their ban or I don't,
- 59:48however you look at it.
- 59:50They should be tested during their ban.
- 59:54For sure.
- 59:55Like you can't go four years
- 59:57without getting tested.
- 59:59It's literally like, Oh,
- 1:00:00continue doing for a little
- 1:00:01bit longer what you can do and then
- 1:00:04next time you're at an
- 1:00:04in-person competition, you'll get tested.
- 1:00:07So, you know,
- 1:00:08then they know they're
- 1:00:10basically figuring out in
- 1:00:11the next four years,
- 1:00:12how long things take to get
- 1:00:14out of their system.
- 1:00:15They got four years to figure that out.
- 1:00:17Yeah.
- 1:00:18They got to get tested somehow.
- 1:00:22I did hear that,
- 1:00:23that Ricky Gerard was
- 1:00:25tested throughout the band,
- 1:00:27but I don't know.
- 1:00:29It could have been one time.
- 1:00:30One time.
- 1:00:30Is that what it was?
- 1:00:31One time.
- 1:00:35So I agree with you, Carolyn, that to me,
- 1:00:40if I'm in CrossFit and I get banned,
- 1:00:42let's juice it up to 11 and
- 1:00:47get as strong as I can possibly get.
- 1:00:50And then when I know the
- 1:00:51half-life is going to be
- 1:00:52gone for my return back,
- 1:00:55then let it all out, right?
- 1:00:59But we don't even test the
- 1:01:02current athletes enough.
- 1:01:04I have competed in CrossFit since 2014.
- 1:01:09I have been tested three times, I think.
- 1:01:18And I'm on the list of I
- 1:01:21send my whereabouts every
- 1:01:22three to four months.
- 1:01:25been tested three times for
- 1:01:27the crossfit games I want
- 1:01:28to say and I've been on
- 1:01:29podiums like a few times in
- 1:01:32like different competitions
- 1:01:34they're not testing enough
- 1:01:37because like I don't take
- 1:01:39anything I just take
- 1:01:40creaking that's the only
- 1:01:40thing I take and I'm like
- 1:01:41I'm thinking to myself damn
- 1:01:42if I'm getting tested three
- 1:01:44times in 10 years and I've
- 1:01:46been to 10 10 regionals and
- 1:01:48semi-finals like
- 1:01:50I mean, I know some of the top,
- 1:01:51top athletes are getting
- 1:01:52tested a lot more,
- 1:01:54but still the other games
- 1:01:57athletes or bubble people,
- 1:02:00like there's just not enough testing.
- 1:02:03It's crazy.
- 1:02:04It is crazy.
- 1:02:07I don't know what the solution is.
- 1:02:08That does seem like a big
- 1:02:09strain on the budget.
- 1:02:12So I don't know.
- 1:02:14But then in my head, I'm like,
- 1:02:15but don't waste your test on me.
- 1:02:16Go test other people.
- 1:02:17I'm clean.
- 1:02:19Sure, test me, but go test people.
- 1:02:25Just not enough.
- 1:02:27And in the teams,
- 1:02:29they only test two people.
- 1:02:31So I don't know.
- 1:02:33I'd rather pay more for
- 1:02:36competitions knowing that
- 1:02:37everyone gets tested.
- 1:02:40I'd rather pay a little bit
- 1:02:42more in the competition fee
- 1:02:43if it means it's covering
- 1:02:44the testing of more people.
- 1:02:47But even then,
- 1:02:48people at competitions are
- 1:02:51normally off whatever they're taking.
- 1:02:53So it's during the open, show up to a gym.
- 1:02:57Show up to a random
- 1:02:58affiliate that has a bunch
- 1:03:00of people or just that you know.
- 1:03:01Show up to an affiliate, test.
- 1:03:03Because everyone that's on
- 1:03:04the open or under that could be tested.
- 1:03:09So during the open,
- 1:03:10just show up to places.
- 1:03:13The only people that take
- 1:03:15during a competition are those that say,
- 1:03:17Hey, my buddy gave me a bag of pills.
- 1:03:20I just took them.
- 1:03:27But I know it's expensive, but yeah,
- 1:03:28I guess I don't know, but I guess.
- 1:03:30Yeah.
- 1:03:32I don't know what to do there either.
- 1:03:36All right.
- 1:03:37Well,
- 1:03:37hopefully when they come back from
- 1:03:38their ban, though,
- 1:03:40is that they've learned their lesson.
- 1:03:42Like, that's what you hope for, right?
- 1:03:43Like,
- 1:03:43that's what my heart wants to believe,
- 1:03:46I guess.
- 1:03:49That they're coming back.
- 1:03:49Have you ever predicted that
- 1:03:51Ricky would be this popular
- 1:03:55after coming back?
- 1:03:57No,
- 1:03:58I thought that there would be a little
- 1:03:59bit more.
- 1:04:00But, like, this first year,
- 1:04:01I think he was well –
- 1:04:05like, uh, well received.
- 1:04:08Yeah, he was,
- 1:04:09he was actually well received.
- 1:04:10I was surprised,
- 1:04:10but I was really surprised
- 1:04:12about his first year back
- 1:04:14being well received.
- 1:04:16And now he's like,
- 1:04:17like he's one of the most
- 1:04:18popular athletes in the sport.
- 1:04:21Yeah.
- 1:04:22And I think people want to
- 1:04:23see someone learn from
- 1:04:24their lesson and learn, um, yeah,
- 1:04:28like learn from their lesson.
- 1:04:29And then,
- 1:04:30like a comeback story.
- 1:04:31Like we all love a comeback story.
- 1:04:33I think that's what's drawing people in.
- 1:04:35The only thing I didn't like
- 1:04:37from that situation is that
- 1:04:38his brother popped for the
- 1:04:39same thing two years later.
- 1:04:40And you're like, did he learn?
- 1:04:42That's where I'm like, what,
- 1:04:44what about Ricky makes you
- 1:04:45think he learned from his lesson?
- 1:04:47And especially knowing his brother,
- 1:04:49like maybe he just learned how to cycle.
- 1:04:55No comment.
- 1:04:56I don't know.
- 1:05:00For me,
- 1:05:01the tough part is that his brother
- 1:05:03tested positive two years.
- 1:05:04Like that, that was a tough part.
- 1:05:05Cause I was like, well,
- 1:05:08one of them hasn't learned
- 1:05:09their lesson at least, but you, you hope,
- 1:05:12I don't know.
- 1:05:13I hope that cause he's,
- 1:05:14he's really a phenomenal athlete.
- 1:05:16Like he's not just a crosser.
- 1:05:17Like he's a really good athlete.
- 1:05:18I think he played rugby.
- 1:05:20He's a great mountain biker or like,
- 1:05:22it's like, I,
- 1:05:23I like the athletes in this sport.
- 1:05:24So he's, he's an athlete.
- 1:05:26So like, I, I hope that he can, that he's,
- 1:05:31learned ldy2742 if you're
- 1:05:34caught they should be
- 1:05:35tested every three months
- 1:05:36make the athlete pay for it
- 1:05:38I do like that you want to
- 1:05:39compete that's an
- 1:05:41interesting take yeah
- 1:05:47something like that I guess
- 1:05:49I i don't I don't even know
- 1:05:50how much the testing is but
- 1:05:51something like that yeah I have no clue
- 1:05:54but I guess they would know
- 1:05:55when they're buying their
- 1:05:56own test to get tested.
- 1:05:59And I don't know how that would work, but.
- 1:06:04Yeah.
- 1:06:07It's you got to pay the penance, right?
- 1:06:10You're the one that tested positive.
- 1:06:13You want to stay in the sport.
- 1:06:14You got to pay for this over
- 1:06:16the next four years.
- 1:06:17Well,
- 1:06:17Brian friend on what's it called
- 1:06:22around the whiteboard is
- 1:06:23what it's called.
- 1:06:24I'd like propose that if you
- 1:06:29test positive and then you
- 1:06:31rat someone else out,
- 1:06:32that is also juicing that
- 1:06:36it would reduce yours.
- 1:06:37Cause it would basically try
- 1:06:39to get more people to get tested.
- 1:06:41I still don't like the fact
- 1:06:42that you would reduce yours.
- 1:06:43Like going to rat someone else out.
- 1:06:45Shouldn't reduce what you did.
- 1:06:48Like you still tested positive.
- 1:06:51It should get, you know,
- 1:06:52your four years just by,
- 1:06:54pointing fingers and say, well,
- 1:06:56go and test these ones that
- 1:06:57I got the supply from or whatever,
- 1:06:59shouldn't be reducing your bad.
- 1:07:02But if it's going to grab more people,
- 1:07:04I don't know.
- 1:07:05Both are, I don't know.
- 1:07:06What do you think about that?
- 1:07:07Yeah,
- 1:07:08I thought it was an interesting take.
- 1:07:11I would almost be willing to
- 1:07:13dock a year just to get
- 1:07:16more people caught.
- 1:07:20It may be worth it.
- 1:07:23So then it would go like that.
- 1:07:24No, no more than one year though.
- 1:07:26No more than one year.
- 1:07:27Agreed.
- 1:07:28Like just cause you do two,
- 1:07:29you don't get two years.
- 1:07:30If you start going into two
- 1:07:32years and stuff and all of
- 1:07:33a sudden that would be.
- 1:07:34Yeah.
- 1:07:36Yeah.
- 1:07:36Yep.
- 1:07:36Exactly.
- 1:07:37We attribute that to the right Brian.
- 1:07:39It was Brian spin.
- 1:07:41What did I say?
- 1:07:42Friend.
- 1:07:43Oh, sorry.
- 1:07:44Uh, yeah.
- 1:07:44Brian spin.
- 1:07:45Wow.
- 1:07:47Yes, yes, yes.
- 1:07:49When you said that Brian
- 1:07:50Friend was on Around the World,
- 1:07:51I knew that that topic was on.
- 1:07:53I was like, well,
- 1:07:54that's news that he was brought on.
- 1:07:55I don't even know why I said Brian Friend.
- 1:07:58Different people.
- 1:08:00Yeah.
- 1:08:02Brian.
- 1:08:03All right.
- 1:08:05All right.
- 1:08:05Open predictions.
- 1:08:06So, Scott,
- 1:08:07you want us to guess what we
- 1:08:08think the first workout might be?
- 1:08:10Is that what you want to predict?
- 1:08:12This isn't my note.
- 1:08:14Oh, all right, Carolyn.
- 1:08:15All right, let's go.
- 1:08:17I don't know.
- 1:08:18I was just asking if you had
- 1:08:20any predictions for the Open coming up.
- 1:08:24Prediction workout-wise or
- 1:08:26prediction... Yeah, workout-wise.
- 1:08:27Okay.
- 1:08:28Movement-wise, week one.
- 1:08:30Because you said it's unique.
- 1:08:32I know.
- 1:08:35I'm intrigued by the wording
- 1:08:38around week one.
- 1:08:43CrossFit...
- 1:08:45I think it's going to be
- 1:08:46simple classic CrossFit.
- 1:08:49What's going to be unique in there?
- 1:08:51I don't know.
- 1:08:52That to me is not unique.
- 1:08:58I would like to think that
- 1:09:00they are done with the
- 1:09:02introductions of new
- 1:09:03movements in the open.
- 1:09:04It's
- 1:09:06I just, I don't think that's a good idea.
- 1:09:08I don't think that's the
- 1:09:09place to introduce them.
- 1:09:10It's too many people
- 1:09:14interpreting something new.
- 1:09:18Online.
- 1:09:19Yeah.
- 1:09:20I think that also,
- 1:09:21I think I would also go
- 1:09:22with quarterfinals for that too.
- 1:09:23I think if there's a new
- 1:09:24movement introduced,
- 1:09:25I would like to see it in
- 1:09:26person with top judges and
- 1:09:30then have it trickle down from there.
- 1:09:32But when you have non judges,
- 1:09:35top judges and affiliates
- 1:09:38grabbing new movements.
- 1:09:39I don't think that's a good idea.
- 1:09:40Cindy.
- 1:09:44I don't think you're going
- 1:09:44to see burpee or pushups in, in the open.
- 1:09:48That's, that's a recipe for disaster,
- 1:09:52but there could be a version of that,
- 1:09:54whether it be like burpee
- 1:09:56Cindy or Dave pipes every year.
- 1:10:01And it's never crazy different.
- 1:10:04Yeah.
- 1:10:04Yeah.
- 1:10:06He does have a way to just draw you in.
- 1:10:09Like,
- 1:10:09it's just like the way he would speak
- 1:10:11at the games, the way that he just,
- 1:10:13you know, those words about the open,
- 1:10:16like you're just,
- 1:10:17those are the things I
- 1:10:18think that people miss the
- 1:10:19most is just the way he
- 1:10:21talks about workouts and
- 1:10:23just gets you anxious.
- 1:10:25Literally, you're like listening to him.
- 1:10:26You're like, oh my gosh,
- 1:10:28there's a lot of pain coming up.
- 1:10:31Yeah, that makes sense.
- 1:10:34It makes me think that it
- 1:10:36won't be a retest because
- 1:10:37that's not really unique.
- 1:10:42Like what if it's like the
- 1:10:44seven minutes of burpees,
- 1:10:45but it's like seven minutes of,
- 1:10:47they had a 10 minutes of
- 1:10:49burpee box jump overs on cap or.com.
- 1:10:52I,
- 1:10:53I get them mixed up now because a lot of
- 1:10:54cap has been showing up on.com.
- 1:10:58Something like that is just gross.
- 1:11:00Yeah.
- 1:11:02So I would and so and I we
- 1:11:04actually were just talking
- 1:11:05about this recently.
- 1:11:06I would like to see burpee
- 1:11:08pull either burpee or
- 1:11:10bar muscle up or burpee ring
- 1:11:11muscle up um because I
- 1:11:13personally think not
- 1:11:15connecting those reps like
- 1:11:18I've said this before like
- 1:11:19a ring muscle up with the
- 1:11:21dip I think is the way to
- 1:11:22do it or or burpee ring
- 1:11:24muscle ups so that it you
- 1:11:26can't really get away with
- 1:11:27that push away as much um
- 1:11:30and making those be singles
- 1:11:32and um I just think this
- 1:11:34one is the first one right
- 1:11:36um so yeah like a burpee
- 1:11:38bar muscle up I think would be
- 1:11:41Let me propose this.
- 1:11:44Everywhere we're hearing Boz
- 1:11:45and Dave talk about how we
- 1:11:48have to change the way
- 1:11:50workouts look so that everybody can start,
- 1:11:53not everybody can finish.
- 1:11:55And maybe workout one is a
- 1:11:57demonstration of that.
- 1:11:59So my first ever open workout was 13-1.
- 1:12:03It was 50 burpees, then snatches,
- 1:12:10lightweight.
- 1:12:11Then you went more burpees or less burpees,
- 1:12:14but then a heavier snatch.
- 1:12:17What if you did like both?
- 1:12:20You start with regular
- 1:12:21burpees and you do a light snatch.
- 1:12:24Then you do burpee pull-ups
- 1:12:26and a heavier snatch.
- 1:12:28Then burpee bar muscle-ups
- 1:12:30and a heavier snatch.
- 1:12:31something like that that
- 1:12:33demonstrates what the new
- 1:12:37way of the workout is going
- 1:12:39to be so that everybody can play,
- 1:12:42but we can still test for
- 1:12:44the fittest on earth.
- 1:12:50Yeah.
- 1:12:50I think we're going to see a
- 1:12:51lot of that type of thing
- 1:12:53or the gated type workouts
- 1:12:57in quarterfinals.
- 1:12:58I think they've already alluded to that.
- 1:13:00They're like,
- 1:13:02they basically said the 25
- 1:13:05will be able to start the
- 1:13:06workout they probably won't
- 1:13:08be able to finish um so I
- 1:13:10would be hesitant to think
- 1:13:11that they're gonna do that
- 1:13:12also in the open um just
- 1:13:16because I think that's
- 1:13:16gonna be you're gonna see
- 1:13:18five of those workout types
- 1:13:19of workouts in
- 1:13:20quarterfinals so I don't
- 1:13:24know I don't know I don't
- 1:13:27think we'll see shuttles personally
- 1:13:30i think I don't think
- 1:13:31shuttles will be in I don't
- 1:13:33necessarily think have they
- 1:13:34shown a like a equipment
- 1:13:39list no I don't think
- 1:13:40they're doing that this
- 1:13:40year well I said I think it
- 1:13:42was paused no I think it
- 1:13:43was said that the equipment
- 1:13:46list basically came out of
- 1:13:47the pandemic and uh they're
- 1:13:51going away from that but
- 1:13:53now you should just have everything
- 1:13:55basically have everything available and,
- 1:13:59but I don't think you'll
- 1:14:00see anything with 25, um, feet for the,
- 1:14:03for the open.
- 1:14:04I think something on the
- 1:14:06spot or in a smaller area,
- 1:14:09that's just easier for the affiliates, uh,
- 1:14:12might be the way to go just
- 1:14:14to facilitate classes,
- 1:14:15to run the workouts.
- 1:14:18We've had 25 feet for a long time.
- 1:14:20We have with lunges.
- 1:14:212016 was the introduction.
- 1:14:24I think with the overhead walking lunges,
- 1:14:27burpees, chest of our one,
- 1:14:29I think was the first time.
- 1:14:31So I don't,
- 1:14:31I don't think that's the big
- 1:14:32problem for affiliates.
- 1:14:34It's that it's designated floors length.
- 1:14:40So quick move.
- 1:14:41Yeah.
- 1:14:42I w I would say that one,
- 1:14:43it would be a problem
- 1:14:44because on overhead,
- 1:14:48bar a lot of like our gym
- 1:14:49would have to go under the
- 1:14:51rig and like that just
- 1:14:53takes up a lot of room like
- 1:14:54a bar versus like dumbbells
- 1:14:57in 17.2 I think it was uh
- 1:15:02lunge lunge love toast of
- 1:15:04our power like that takes a
- 1:15:07little bit less room that
- 1:15:07you can kind of go a little
- 1:15:08closer in lanes if you're
- 1:15:11if you're by people but the
- 1:15:13overhead bar I think would be less
- 1:15:17And you could,
- 1:15:18you could make lunges 15
- 1:15:19feet or like short.
- 1:15:22And it'd still be effective.
- 1:15:24Hell you can lunge in place
- 1:15:25and it's effective.
- 1:15:26Yeah.
- 1:15:27Especially cause you're
- 1:15:28having to push off.
- 1:15:30If you're doing like,
- 1:15:30let's say a forward lunge
- 1:15:31or a reverse lunge.
- 1:15:35That could be.
- 1:15:38Do we see a max lift?
- 1:15:40I think we will see a max lift.
- 1:15:42What's your prediction of the max lift?
- 1:15:48I think a heavy deadlift is coming.
- 1:15:52Woo.
- 1:15:5514.3.
- 1:15:58Box jumps and deadlifts ascending ladder.
- 1:16:00It's coming.
- 1:16:01It's coming back.
- 1:16:04Oh, so you just think just like 14.3,
- 1:16:07like the workout lift,
- 1:16:08not like a one rep max deadlift.
- 1:16:11No, no,
- 1:16:11I don't think I'd do a one rep max
- 1:16:13deadlift.
- 1:16:14I think there's going to be
- 1:16:14a two part workout with a lift.
- 1:16:19Complex or a lift?
- 1:16:21So I would prefer to see a
- 1:16:23complex for sure.
- 1:16:25I just think doing a single lift after,
- 1:16:29I mean,
- 1:16:30I think it should be after a
- 1:16:31workout and I think it should be,
- 1:16:33you should have to do the
- 1:16:34workout in some fashion to earn the lift.
- 1:16:37The one year, 2021,
- 1:16:38when they did the complex,
- 1:16:43I did not like the format
- 1:16:45of once you got done,
- 1:16:47you had one minute or something.
- 1:16:48I don't know what the time
- 1:16:49was because you were
- 1:16:50getting penalized by being fitter.
- 1:16:53Yep.
- 1:16:53Because if you finish the,
- 1:16:55and then if you didn't finish the workout,
- 1:16:57let's say you began lifting.
- 1:16:58I don't remember the time.
- 1:16:59It was the thruster chest to bar one.
- 1:17:01And then let's say 12
- 1:17:03minutes at the 12 minute mark,
- 1:17:04you had a time cap and then
- 1:17:07however long you had for your lifts.
- 1:17:09But if you finish that in,
- 1:17:11let's say eight minutes,
- 1:17:12you were lifting at nine minutes.
- 1:17:14You were lifting under a certain fatigue.
- 1:17:16And if you didn't have the
- 1:17:17fitness to finish very fast
- 1:17:19and you had to wait around
- 1:17:20because you didn't have, let's say,
- 1:17:21a chest to bar or the bar muscle up,
- 1:17:24you got to rest.
- 1:17:26Basically, you could almost load your bar,
- 1:17:28get ready,
- 1:17:28and then you got to do your
- 1:17:29lift fresh while the fitter
- 1:17:33athletes were under fatigue.
- 1:17:35So I don't like that idea.
- 1:17:36I like that if you are going
- 1:17:38into another lift, if you finish earlier,
- 1:17:40you earn that rest.
- 1:17:44A hundred percent.
- 1:17:45And not one minute later you finish.
- 1:17:49Boom.
- 1:17:49Go.
- 1:17:50Yeah.
- 1:17:51I didn't.
- 1:17:51Absolutely.
- 1:17:52It was 2021.
- 1:17:52Yeah.
- 1:17:55I didn't like that either.
- 1:17:56I remember specifically that
- 1:17:57there were people in the gym out,
- 1:18:00outlifting me, which is not rare,
- 1:18:02but who did half the amount of work.
- 1:18:04And I'm like,
- 1:18:05if you would have continued
- 1:18:07to work with what I did, you would have,
- 1:18:09you wouldn't have hit what you hit.
- 1:18:10I mean, I, I know that for a fact.
- 1:18:13Um, yeah, I don't like workouts like that.
- 1:18:15Yeah.
- 1:18:16So if there is a second part,
- 1:18:17it can't be like 2015 with
- 1:18:21part a was nine minutes.
- 1:18:23And then part B was the
- 1:18:24clean and jerk and people
- 1:18:25sat around and then a max lift,
- 1:18:27which was very similar to me.
- 1:18:29People didn't sit around for 2021, uh,
- 1:18:3021 point,
- 1:18:34three slash four.
- 1:18:35Yep.
- 1:18:35But it was the same idea as
- 1:18:372015 where someone could
- 1:18:39still float around for the
- 1:18:41first part and then get
- 1:18:42ready for their lift.
- 1:18:44Yeah.
- 1:18:48Scott,
- 1:18:48do you think there'll be a lift in
- 1:18:49the open?
- 1:18:54I'll be honest.
- 1:18:54I have not thought about the
- 1:18:56open because of the last week too much.
- 1:19:00Um, I always love a lift and,
- 1:19:04I'll tell you the year they
- 1:19:05had the burpees you had to
- 1:19:07finish to be able to lift.
- 1:19:11Yes.
- 1:19:14It, it pushed me to,
- 1:19:16and that's the only workout
- 1:19:18I've ever repeated because
- 1:19:20I missed it by like two
- 1:19:21reps the first time and
- 1:19:25then went in with a
- 1:19:25different strategy and
- 1:19:27finished it and was able to
- 1:19:29do the lift on the second one.
- 1:19:30That was a game changer.
- 1:19:32Yeah.
- 1:19:35Yeah.
- 1:19:35I, that was one of my, I,
- 1:19:37that workout was tough, but like,
- 1:19:39I think that's the way you
- 1:19:41program a lift for sure.
- 1:19:43You,
- 1:19:44you have to show the fitness to earn it.
- 1:19:47I was thinking bench too.
- 1:19:48Sorry.
- 1:19:48What if we're all thinking
- 1:19:52there's like a max lift,
- 1:19:53but it's a max gymnastics
- 1:19:55movement and it's like max reps of,
- 1:19:59I don't know.
- 1:20:01They did pull-ups in team
- 1:20:02series the one year or
- 1:20:03something like that.
- 1:20:04I mean,
- 1:20:05a certain amount of time or
- 1:20:08something on a machine, like a one,
- 1:20:10two K row.
- 1:20:12So did you see their,
- 1:20:14did you see their posts the other day of,
- 1:20:19it was like basically some,
- 1:20:21some people say a two K row
- 1:20:22is one of like the worst things.
- 1:20:23How about three of them?
- 1:20:25And it was like two K row rest,
- 1:20:27three minutes, repeat two K row rest,
- 1:20:30three minutes repeat.
- 1:20:31And I was like, gross, gross.
- 1:20:33Something that people avoid doing like,
- 1:20:36like repeated workouts.
- 1:20:38And it's like, your score is your slowest,
- 1:20:39you know, or something like that.
- 1:20:41And it's like, that sucks.
- 1:20:44Yes.
- 1:20:45You know, and we're all thinking max slip,
- 1:20:46but it could be something
- 1:20:47different and unique.
- 1:20:49And it's something that tests fitness.
- 1:20:53I don't know.
- 1:20:54Just throwing that out there.
- 1:20:54That would just, that would take so long.
- 1:20:56I mean, they wouldn't be a 2k,
- 1:20:59but I don't know.
- 1:21:02Something.
- 1:21:04Yeah, I saw that one and I was like,
- 1:21:05oh my god.
- 1:21:06I suppose you could do a 2K row.
- 1:21:10I mean,
- 1:21:10they've had 20 like 25 minute workouts.
- 1:21:1625?
- 1:21:17Yeah.
- 1:21:18Well, shoot.
- 1:21:19They had the thruster double
- 1:21:21under which had no time cap.
- 1:21:25Thruster double under. 17.5.
- 1:21:30there were people that like
- 1:21:31there literally was no clock for that.
- 1:21:33So like you could have gone for it.
- 1:21:35Yeah.
- 1:21:35Okay.
- 1:21:36Yeah.
- 1:21:36I was trying to think of, yeah.
- 1:21:4017.5.
- 1:21:43Um, but for the most part, I think,
- 1:21:46I think they're done in about 20 minutes,
- 1:21:47but I don't know.
- 1:21:52I was going to say there's no cap for 14,
- 1:21:54five, 16, five.
- 1:21:56Yeah.
- 1:21:56The burpees.
- 1:21:59So yeah.
- 1:22:03Are we ready to wrap this thing up?
- 1:22:05Yes.
- 1:22:07I put the next one here and
- 1:22:08I listed this just before
- 1:22:10the show on death by one of
- 1:22:13the questions was,
- 1:22:14can you be balanced in life
- 1:22:16and win the CrossFit Games?
- 1:22:19Because it's almost been
- 1:22:21like an armor for people to say,
- 1:22:26and I'll just say Matt Frazier,
- 1:22:28like he did not live in
- 1:22:30balance to win the CrossFit Games.
- 1:22:33When he was training,
- 1:22:34it was all about training
- 1:22:36and all about winning the games.
- 1:22:39Do you think you can be
- 1:22:40balanced in life and win?
- 1:22:46Yes.
- 1:22:48Well, in life,
- 1:22:52there's still some sacrifices, I guess.
- 1:22:55But I don't know.
- 1:22:56I think Pat Vellner has gone pretty close.
- 1:23:00Is that right?
- 1:23:02Alex Gazan is an example of
- 1:23:04someone who is just such a freak athlete.
- 1:23:07He thinks she can do it.
- 1:23:09And she's very adamant about
- 1:23:11having balance in her life.
- 1:23:15What's balance for her?
- 1:23:17Yeah.
- 1:23:18She's doing this full time.
- 1:23:20Exactly.
- 1:23:21She doesn't have a job.
- 1:23:22I mean, defined.
- 1:23:24Job is CrossFit.
- 1:23:25Yeah.
- 1:23:26Sponsorship obligations and stuff.
- 1:23:27I don't know what I would
- 1:23:28consider balance in that point.
- 1:23:30I guess everyone's balance is different,
- 1:23:31though.
- 1:23:33That's the thing as well is
- 1:23:35my balance will look
- 1:23:35different than someone
- 1:23:36else's balance because what
- 1:23:37I can handle will be
- 1:23:39different than someone else's.
- 1:23:44I mean, Ariel still doesn't work, though,
- 1:23:46like in terms – she has her daughter.
- 1:23:48Are you saying being a
- 1:23:50mother is not working?
- 1:23:51No, no, no.
- 1:23:51I'm saying – no, no, no.
- 1:23:53But I'm saying she's like –
- 1:23:55she's training at home.
- 1:23:57She has her daughter,
- 1:24:00and then she has – like
- 1:24:02she's not doing like another job on top,
- 1:24:05right?
- 1:24:05Like she has her daughter
- 1:24:07that she's doing a lot of
- 1:24:09activities with and then
- 1:24:10doing her training around –
- 1:24:13that part um which I think
- 1:24:15helps on her garage gym oh
- 1:24:17my gosh looks have you guys
- 1:24:19seen how nice it looks her
- 1:24:21new one that's getting
- 1:24:23built the new one beautiful
- 1:24:27damn that's that's amazing
- 1:24:32that's what happens when
- 1:24:32you yeah I would say she's
- 1:24:35pretty close in terms of
- 1:24:37balance because of
- 1:24:40like it's not only CrossFit, but I mean,
- 1:24:41there's other like fathers
- 1:24:43and mothers too in this space.
- 1:24:45So I don't, I guess, yeah,
- 1:24:46I guess how do we define balance?
- 1:24:48Are we talking about, can you have a job,
- 1:24:50like another career?
- 1:24:54Is that what we're talking about?
- 1:24:55Or because there's other athletes that,
- 1:25:00I mean,
- 1:25:00male athletes aren't coming back
- 1:25:02from like a pregnancy,
- 1:25:03like Ariel or Annie or Cara Tia have.
- 1:25:07So I guess like that's
- 1:25:08completely different, I think.
- 1:25:10I don't know.
- 1:25:12Yeah.
- 1:25:13I'd be curious what they're, when they,
- 1:25:16yeah.
- 1:25:16What were they trying to say
- 1:25:17when they said that?
- 1:25:18I mean, it's notable with Matt, right?
- 1:25:21Like he was a singular focus
- 1:25:23and to the effect of not
- 1:25:25using a knife during season,
- 1:25:27not going to someone's birthday party,
- 1:25:30not see,
- 1:25:31like if you become no longer social and,
- 1:25:36to the point where you like
- 1:25:37will not go out and go
- 1:25:40somewhere with your friends
- 1:25:40on a Friday night.
- 1:25:41Cause you don't want to go
- 1:25:41to a restaurant or you
- 1:25:43don't have a different food.
- 1:25:46Um, I would say, no, you're not balanced.
- 1:25:49I would say I'm not balanced
- 1:25:50and I'm not nowhere near.
- 1:25:52Um, so like,
- 1:25:54there's lots of things I
- 1:25:55declined to do with my
- 1:25:57family that I would have
- 1:25:58not declined to do years ago.
- 1:26:00Um,
- 1:26:02And I and I can only imagine
- 1:26:04that the people that do
- 1:26:05this like fully full time
- 1:26:07are even worse than me.
- 1:26:09But maybe I'm wrong.
- 1:26:14Yeah, yeah, I guess.
- 1:26:15Yes.
- 1:26:16It's the balance question
- 1:26:17that I have trouble.
- 1:26:19Because that's like,
- 1:26:21is it's gonna be different for everyone.
- 1:26:23Everyone's balance is different.
- 1:26:25Exactly.
- 1:26:26Like, I think
- 1:26:27if just looking on social
- 1:26:29and what you see on social
- 1:26:30media isn't even an
- 1:26:31accurate representation of
- 1:26:32what people probably do outside,
- 1:26:34but it's nice to see though, you know,
- 1:26:38someone like Pat, for instance,
- 1:26:40still put in some hours,
- 1:26:44his chiropractic
- 1:26:47chiropractor job that he's doing.
- 1:26:51Then he has a family as well.
- 1:26:53Plus he's,
- 1:26:54you know, podium at the games.
- 1:26:55Ariel has a daughter.
- 1:26:57You can see her doing
- 1:26:58activities with her
- 1:27:00daughter and doing things
- 1:27:02like it's different.
- 1:27:03Like she doesn't have the
- 1:27:04job as well as Pat,
- 1:27:06but then she also came back
- 1:27:07from pregnancy.
- 1:27:08It's just different.
- 1:27:09I don't know.
- 1:27:12Yeah.
- 1:27:13I think, I think it can happen though.
- 1:27:14I think it happened.
- 1:27:15Yeah.
- 1:27:16I think Emma Lawson does a pretty good job,
- 1:27:18but again, she's,
- 1:27:20not working.
- 1:27:21Uh, I'm pretty sure she's living at home,
- 1:27:23has a great setup at home,
- 1:27:25has a lot of sponsorships and,
- 1:27:30but in terms of her life balance,
- 1:27:34it's easier maybe to have a
- 1:27:35balanced life when your
- 1:27:36partner is a games athlete as well.
- 1:27:39And they have similar interests.
- 1:27:40Like I think that balance,
- 1:27:43they see each other at the gym as well,
- 1:27:45and then they can spend some time off.
- 1:27:46I don't know.
- 1:27:49It's still connected,
- 1:27:50but she is still doing kid or young stuff,
- 1:27:54right?
- 1:27:56Rich Rawlings is a good example.
- 1:27:59That guy has no balance.
- 1:28:01When he was individual, no way.
- 1:28:03He has no balance.
- 1:28:04You have to go team to get balance.
- 1:28:08His kids come to the gym.
- 1:28:10He doesn't have balance.
- 1:28:12I love him too, but like
- 1:28:15There's not.
- 1:28:15I don't know.
- 1:28:18They did say on the show
- 1:28:18that those who are
- 1:28:22partnered with their life
- 1:28:24partner as a coach and life
- 1:28:26partner seem to be more balanced,
- 1:28:29like a Jeff Adler or a Tia Toomey,
- 1:28:33but it's just probably more disguised.
- 1:28:35Yeah, I agree with that.
- 1:28:44That is their lifestyle as a family.
- 1:28:48So the balance there is in
- 1:28:53unison in a sense.
- 1:28:59Yeah.
- 1:29:00Well,
- 1:29:00the last thing we have on our agenda
- 1:29:03is from the TDC podcast,
- 1:29:06Vendor Village not attached
- 1:29:07directly to the venue at
- 1:29:09this year's games.
- 1:29:10It's a few hundred meters away.
- 1:29:12It's a walk.
- 1:29:13It's not right next to it.
- 1:29:15It's going to have a different feeling.
- 1:29:17They're going to plan for
- 1:29:18big breaks between events
- 1:29:20to hopefully drive people over there.
- 1:29:22Thoughts for vendors?
- 1:29:24On the surface, without seeing it,
- 1:29:26I think that sucks.
- 1:29:29Even if they put big breaks,
- 1:29:31people are going to go to a restaurant.
- 1:29:35But having a wall through
- 1:29:37the vendor village,
- 1:29:38having it so easily accessible there,
- 1:29:40I think really helps the vendors.
- 1:29:43If they go and do workouts
- 1:29:46in the vendor village,
- 1:29:46because it's a bigger vendor village,
- 1:29:48and it's like, hey,
- 1:29:49meet at 1 o'clock here for
- 1:29:51a community workout,
- 1:29:54having these athletes sign,
- 1:29:55it could draw people.
- 1:29:56I think that's what they're
- 1:29:57going to try to do.
- 1:29:59But I think it's,
- 1:30:01I guess we'll see year one,
- 1:30:03but it's definitely
- 1:30:04interesting that it's not attached.
- 1:30:05Because when that building came up,
- 1:30:08the Dickies, we all thought, you know, oh,
- 1:30:11the vendor village is going
- 1:30:12to look great here and there.
- 1:30:13But it's not attached.
- 1:30:15So one,
- 1:30:16what are they using that area that
- 1:30:18typically is a vendor village for?
- 1:30:22And basic freaking business 101 is,
- 1:30:26Wherever it is,
- 1:30:28make it the entrance to the arena.
- 1:30:34To come and go,
- 1:30:35you have to walk through
- 1:30:36Vendor Village to go to the arena.
- 1:30:39And I'm okay with it.
- 1:30:42If you guys have indicated
- 1:30:43in Paper Street who were
- 1:30:46right inside of Wadapalooza last year,
- 1:30:48not this year, but last year,
- 1:30:50and everybody had to walk
- 1:30:51by their booth to get to
- 1:30:53any of the venues, they killed it.
- 1:30:57Yep.
- 1:31:02So I don't know.
- 1:31:05Yeah, the open.
- 1:31:07And it's going to be open to the public.
- 1:31:09And that works then.
- 1:31:12If it's the entrance,
- 1:31:13you have to walk through
- 1:31:14there to get to the arena.
- 1:31:17You just have the gate on
- 1:31:18the back end to go into the arena.
- 1:31:21Or you can exit over here if
- 1:31:23you're just there for the public.
- 1:31:27Yeah, I agree.
- 1:31:28I feel like if it's going to be separate,
- 1:31:30it needs to lead into the venue.
- 1:31:35Yeah,
- 1:31:35you have funnel traffic through there.
- 1:31:37If you want people to keep
- 1:31:38sponsoring these things for
- 1:31:42exorbitant amounts of money,
- 1:31:43they have to have the foot traffic.
- 1:31:44They have to make their money back.
- 1:31:47I mean,
- 1:31:47Wadapalooza didn't go great for a
- 1:31:49lot of vendors,
- 1:31:50and a lot of vendors don't
- 1:31:52want to go back.
- 1:31:53Because of the rain, also?
- 1:31:54Probably.
- 1:31:56And I don't...
- 1:31:57And that may be a big part
- 1:31:58of it is the rain was
- 1:32:00keeping spectators away just in general.
- 1:32:04I just think there was less
- 1:32:06foot traffic in general at
- 1:32:07Guadalupe this year overall.
- 1:32:09I think it was paid seats.
- 1:32:13Yeah,
- 1:32:14the paid seats made less people go to
- 1:32:16Guadalupe because they were
- 1:32:18too expensive.
- 1:32:19So less people bought tickets.
- 1:32:24Yeah, I guess I didn't think about that.
- 1:32:27I didn't hear anything about
- 1:32:28Craig Ritchie.
- 1:32:30He wasn't a vendor.
- 1:32:31He just had the app.
- 1:32:32Like he said,
- 1:32:33he lost money going like paying to go.
- 1:32:35Normally he would make that
- 1:32:36back in his YouTube views.
- 1:32:39So hustle is at a booth at
- 1:32:40what a Palooza every year.
- 1:32:45And it's a massive open air
- 1:32:48booth with like,
- 1:32:52Tons of meet and greets and
- 1:32:53stuff like that.
- 1:32:55So he may have had one this year.
- 1:32:57This was my first miss in a couple years.
- 1:33:01Yeah.
- 1:33:02I wouldn't be surprised if
- 1:33:03he didn't make out so well.
- 1:33:04Again, I heard quite a few who didn't.
- 1:33:06So, yeah, that's going to be a problem.
- 1:33:13Well, we're over our 90 minutes.
- 1:33:16Shocker.
- 1:33:18But good show tonight.
- 1:33:20Thank you, everybody,
- 1:33:21in the comments for being here.
- 1:33:23Thank everybody for the well
- 1:33:24wishes and the love in the comments.
- 1:33:27I love you all.
- 1:33:29This has been fun.
- 1:33:30We'll have to do it again.
- 1:33:32Get Carolyn or Lex back on
- 1:33:33and really get some stuff going.
- 1:33:37With that,
- 1:33:38we will catch everybody next
- 1:33:39time on Thursday Night CrossFit Talk.
- 1:33:43Bye, guys.
- 1:33:46We out here takin' aim, let our voices
