- 0:00Welcome to Voices of Life, where history, faith,
- 0:04and the American story come together. Today's
- 0:09Did You Know? episode takes us back to the summer
- 0:12of 1775, a moment when the future of a young
- 0:16nation was still uncertain, and the greatest
- 0:19naval power in the world controlled every American
- 0:22harbor. Before the United States had a navy,
- 0:26before Congress authorized a single warship,
- 0:29patriots were already preparing for a struggle
- 0:32that would reach far beyond the shoreline. This
- 0:36is the untold story of how America began thinking
- 0:39like a maritime nation, months before the Continental
- 0:43Navy was officially born. And guiding us through
- 0:46this powerful chapter of our history is your
- 0:49host, Pastor David, a voice committed to preserving
- 0:53the legacy, courage, and faith that shaped the
- 0:56earliest days of the American Revolution. Settle
- 1:00in. Because the story of how America began to
- 1:04rule the sea starts long before October 13th,
- 1:071775. It begins in the quiet, but determined
- 1:12actions of patriots who understood that liberty
- 1:15would one day need sails, ships, and sailors.
- 1:21Welcome to Voices of Life, a ministry of the
- 1:24Church for Life. I'm Pastor David. Today's Did
- 1:27You Know episode takes us back to summer of 1775,
- 1:32a moment when America was not yet a nation, not
- 1:36yet a maritime power, and not yet ready to challenge
- 1:41the greatest navy on earth. But the preparations
- 1:46had already begun. Long before Congress officially
- 1:49created the Continental Navy on October 13, 1775,
- 1:55Patriots were quietly laying the foundations
- 1:57for America's future at sea. And July 31st sits
- 2:01right in the middle of that forgotten story.
- 2:05By July of 1775, the revolution was underway.
- 2:08The battles of Lexington and Concord had already
- 2:10been fought. The Continental Congress had created
- 2:13the Continental Army. And George Washington had
- 2:16taken command outside of Boston. But the colonies
- 2:20faced a crisis. Britain controlled the sea. Completely.
- 2:24Absolutely and undeniably. British supply ships
- 2:28sailed into Boston without resistance. British
- 2:31warships patrolled American waters with impunity.
- 2:34And the colonies had no national navy, no officers,
- 2:38no warships, no command structure, and no way
- 2:41to protect their commerce or their coastlines.
- 2:44If America hoped to survive, it would have to
- 2:48think like a maritime nation. There is no single
- 2:51congressional resolution dated July 31st, but
- 2:54historians recognize late July and early August
- 2:571775 as the moment when naval preparations truly
- 3:01began. By July, Washington was receiving intelligence
- 3:04that British ships were freely resupplying Boston.
- 3:08Colonial leaders were discussing the need for
- 3:11armed vessels. Several colonies had already begun
- 3:14forming their own naval defenses. Congress was
- 3:18debating whether a united Navy was necessary.
- 3:21Patriot leaders were realizing that the war's
- 3:24outcome would depend on the sea. July 31st is
- 3:29part of the preparation period that led directly
- 3:31to the creation of the Continental Navy, just
- 3:3410 weeks later. America was beginning to understand
- 3:37something profound. Liberty could not survive
- 3:41if it remained trapped on shore. Here's the surprising
- 3:44truth. George Washington created America's first
- 3:47naval operations before Congress created the
- 3:50Navy. In August 1775, Washington began organizing
- 3:55what historians call Washington's Navy or Washington's
- 3:59cruisers. The mission was simple and urgent.
- 4:02Capture British supply ships, deny supplies to
- 4:05British troops in Boston, obtain desperately
- 4:08needed gunpowder, and protect American coastal
- 4:12interests. Washington authorized privately owned
- 4:16schooners and fishing vessels to be armed and
- 4:18commissioned for military service. These vessels,
- 4:21humble, small, and improvised, became the first
- 4:25naval force fighting for the United Colonies.
- 4:28Before Congress acted, Washington was already
- 4:31thinking like a naval commander. Several colonies
- 4:35acted even before Congress did. Rhode Island,
- 4:39Massachusetts, Connecticut, South Carolina, and
- 4:43Virginia. Rhode Island deserves special recognition
- 4:46because on August 26, 1775, its General Assembly
- 4:51formally petitioned Congress to create a national
- 4:54navy capable of protecting all the colonies.
- 4:57Some historians argue that Rhode Island deserves
- 5:00much of the credit for convincing Congress to
- 5:02establish the Continental Navy. America's naval
- 5:06story was not born in a single moment. It was
- 5:09built by colonies that understood the stakes.
- 5:12Let's be honest, the odds could not have been
- 5:15worse. Great Britain possessed the largest navy
- 5:18in the world. Hundreds of warships, thousands
- 5:21of professional sailors and marines, and centuries
- 5:24of global naval experience. The American colonies
- 5:28possessed nothing. No national navy, no naval
- 5:32department, no naval officers, no warship dedicated
- 5:34shipyards, no funding, no command structure.
- 5:38Nothing. America's first naval force would be
- 5:42built from merchant ships, fishing boats, and
- 5:47patriot volunteers. The Continental Navy was
- 5:50born out of necessity, not luxury. Here is a
- 5:55timeline that transformed America from the 13
- 5:57landlocked colonies into an emerging maritime
- 6:01power. In June 1775, the Continental Army was
- 6:06created. July 1775, naval discussions began.
- 6:11August 1775, Rhode Island proposes a Continental
- 6:16Navy. Also in August 1775, Washington organizes
- 6:20naval operations. September 1775, armed vessels
- 6:24begin operating. And October 13th, 1775, the
- 6:28Continental Navy officially was established by
- 6:30Congress. November 10th, 1775, Continental Marines
- 6:34were established. November 1775, naval regulations
- 6:40were adopted. And finally, in December 1775,
- 6:45the first naval commander was appointed. This
- 6:48was the birth of America's maritime identity.
- 6:50If Washington created the need for a navy, John
- 6:53Adams became its greatest champion. Adams famously
- 6:58said, a navy had always been my favorite. He
- 7:03understood that America could not secure He understood
- 7:06that America could not be secure without naval
- 7:10power. Commerce required protection. Independence
- 7:13would fail if Britain controlled American waters.
- 7:18Adams pushed Congress toward creating a Continental
- 7:20Navy, and it is remembered as one of its founding
- 7:24fathers. America's earliest naval missions were
- 7:28not glorious fleet engagements. They were practical,
- 7:32urgent, and essential. They captured British
- 7:35supply ships. They obtained gunpowder. They did
- 7:41protect colonial commerce. They supported the
- 7:44Continental Army. And they harassed British shipping.
- 7:47Without success at sea, Washington's army may
- 7:50not have survived. Did you know America's first
- 7:54naval ships were converted merchant vessels?
- 7:56The Continental Navy operated only 40 to 60 vessels.
- 8:01That's it, 40 to 60 to the British hundreds.
- 8:04Nearly every Continental Navy ship was eventually
- 8:07captured or destroyed. The Navy was disbanded
- 8:11after the war. Congress recreated the Navy in
- 8:151794 under the Constitution. And America's first
- 8:21successful amphibious assault occurred in the
- 8:24Bahamas. These facts remind us that America's
- 8:27naval beginnings were humble but determined.
- 8:30Before America had a navy, it had an idea that
- 8:33liberty could not survive if it remained trapped
- 8:36on the shore. So in the summer of 1775, while
- 8:40the Continental Army stood watch outside of Boston,
- 8:43patriots looked beyond the horizon and understood
- 8:45freedom would require more than just soldiers.
- 8:49It would require sailors. The ships had not yet
- 8:53been built. The flags had not yet been raised.
- 8:55The Continental Navy had not yet to exist. But
- 8:58the preparations had begun. America was learning
- 9:02that to preserve liberty, it would one day have
- 9:06to rule the seas. Thank you for joining us on
- 9:09this Did You Know episode of Voices of Life.
- 9:12I'm Pastor David. Until next time, may we continue
- 9:15to honor the courage of those who look beyond
- 9:18the shore and saw a nation rising we thank you
- 9:21for joining us for this voices of life journey
- 9:24into the summer of 1775 when america first began
- 9:30preparing to challenge the greatest naval power
- 9:32on earth before the continental navy existed
- 9:36before congress authorized a single warship patriots
- 9:42were already looking beyond the shoreline and
- 9:45understanding that liberty would one day depend
- 9:48on the sea. Their ships were small. Their resources
- 9:53were limited. But their determination was extraordinary.
- 9:58From Washington's early naval operations to the
- 10:01colonies that demanded a united maritime force,
- 10:04these first steps carried a nation toward its
- 10:07future. As we close, we remember that freedom
- 10:13is never protected by accident. It is guarded
- 10:16by those willing to stand watch, to take risks,
- 10:19and to see farther than others can see. Until
- 10:23next time, may courage steady your path, may
- 10:27hope strengthen your spirit, and may the story
- 10:30of America's earliest sailors remind us that
- 10:34even the greatest journeys begin with a single
- 10:37decision to move forward. This has been Voices
- 10:41of Life. On behalf of Pastor David, may peace
- 10:44be upon you. And may the light of ordered liberty
- 10:49continue to shine.
