- 0:00There is a particular kind of cruelty that arrives wearing the
- 0:09costume of theology.
- 0:13SPEAKER_01: It does not announce itself as unkind.
- 0:18Instead,
- 0:19it comes dressed in the language of reason,
- 0:23of cause,
- 0:24and of fact.
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: of a tiny universe where suffering always has a satisfying explanation.
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: As we've heard in John chapter 9,
- 0:38Jesus and his disciples are walking along the road when they
- 0:43encounter a man who
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: has been born blind.
- 0:48And before anything redemptive can happen,
- 0:53the disciples ask a question of him.
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?
- 1:05They're so proud of themselves for asking such a thoughtful
- 1:09theological question.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: Notice what the question does not do.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: It does not ask his name.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: It does not ask what he needs.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: He's right there.
- 1:27And they talk about him as if he is some exegetical theological
- 1:34conversation to have.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: A problem to be solved rather than a person to be encountered.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: The question seeks to assign blame and justify his suffering.
- 1:52And that search for blame and justification dressed in
- 1:57spirituality and theology
- 2:00comfortably keeps the questioners at a safe distance from the
- 2:06one who suffers.
- 2:09SPEAKER_01: Jesus refuses that frame.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: Jesus does not take the bait.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: He clears the spiritualized
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: Buffer creating theological underbrush with a single sentence answer.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: Neither this man nor his parents sent.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: Full stop, no cap.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: Then,
- 2:39rather than waiting to have a more spiritual and theological
- 2:44discussion with him,
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: he turns towards the man saying,
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day.
- 2:54SPEAKER_01: Night is coming.
- 2:56Jesus' response is the best response to a bad,
- 3:02spiritualized question about suffering.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: His answer is not theological.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: It is a movement toward the person who is suffering.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: Jesus stops talking.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: and starts acting.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: And he becomes what I like to call the great spitter.
- 3:32Jesus does something that deserves our full attention,
- 3:35I think,
- 3:36this morning.
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: He spits on the ground, makes mud,
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I would give that because I know she likes to make fun.
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: And presses it onto the man's eyes.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: Why?
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: Why not a simple word?
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: Certainly works for Jesus in other cases, right?
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: Well, a few reasons.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: First,
- 4:08the act directly should remind those who are looking on and who
- 4:14are listening on
- 4:16and those of us who are reading of the act of creation in
- 4:21Genesis chapter 2.
- 4:24In Genesis chapter 2,
- 4:26God forms the human being from the dust of the ground.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: Jesus,
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: kneeling into the dirt,
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: using earth and moisture,
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: is recreating this man's life and this man's world.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: He is doing what the Creator does.
- 4:49The one making mud is the one who made the world we are
- 4:54supposed to get from this text.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: But, there is more.
- 5:02I want to tell you a story that I heard a long time ago when I
- 5:07was a missionary and
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: I have never forgotten.
- 5:11There was a missionary who had spent years translating the
- 5:16Bible for a remote
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: indigenous people.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: He translated the Old Testament.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: He translated the prophets.
- 5:25And the people listened and they acknowledged these wonderful
- 5:28faith stories.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: But belief, deep, transforming faith...
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: It didn't come until he translated John chapter 9.
- 5:42And when the people heard that Jesus had healed a blind man by
- 5:48spinning on the
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: ground and making mud,
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: something cracked open for them.
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: The reason is because in their tradition,
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: Certain gifted individuals were known as spitters,
- 6:07healers who used saliva as a medium for their restorative power
- 6:15among the villages.
- 6:17And woven through their ancient tradition was a prophecy that
- 6:25one day the great
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: spitter would come.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: The one whose healing would extend to the whole world.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: And when the missionary read these words aloud,
- 6:41the people did not hear an old story from a foreign culture
- 6:46that they had no idea
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: about.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: They heard the fulfillment of their own prophecy.
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: The great spinner had come, and his name was Jesus, and they will leave.
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: Full stop, no cap.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: Go, wash, come back seen.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: Jesus sends the man to the pool called Salome.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: And John pauses to tell us that the name means sent.
- 7:25SPEAKER_01: So he is sent by a sent one to the pool called sent.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: The mission of God is embedded in the geography of this miracle.
- 7:42SPEAKER_01: And he went and he washed and he came back seeing.
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: This Lent, we have been invited to examine the questions we ask.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: The disciples' question, who sinned?
- 8:00is a question that looks backwards.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: It assigns blame, and it keeps us standing above those who are suffering.
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: Jesus' question,
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: unspoken,
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: but embodied in every single action that he takes,
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: looks at the present...
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: offers healing and moves towards those who are suffering and in need.
- 8:29Jesus' question is,
- 8:30what can be done now to reveal the healing work of God?
- 8:37SPEAKER_01: That question moves forward.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: It moves towards.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: That question requires something of us as well.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: The light of the world did not illuminate from a safe distance.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: He knelt in the dirt.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: He made mud with his hands.
- 8:58SPEAKER_01: He touched what others refused to touch.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: May we too ask better questions than the first disciples.
- 9:10And may we be willing,
- 9:12like Jesus,
- 9:13to kneel in the mud to bring healing to others.
- 9:19Amen.
