- Lucas: If your enterprise network is still running Wi-Fi 6 access points, Windows 11 version 24H2 is about to make your job more interesting. Microsoft's latest hardware certification quietly requires Wi-Fi 7 support for new devices, and the default networking stack now prioritises the 6 GHz band when available. Luna: Wait — so Windows is basically telling IT teams, 'upgrade your wireless or your new laptops won't work optimally'? Lucas: Exactly. It's not a hard block — older Wi-Fi standards still connect — but the driver defaults and power-management profiles are tuned for Wi-Fi 7. If your access points are only Wi-Fi 6 or 6E, you'll see higher latency and more frequent disconnects on modern Windows 11 devices. Luna: I've heard Wi-Fi 7 is still early. What's actually changed that makes this a bigger deal than the jump from Wi-Fi 5 to 6? Lucas: Two things: multi-link operation and the 320 MHz channel width. A lot of enterprises I've talked to are planning phased upgrades: start with high-density areas like conference rooms and open-plan desks where multi-link operation actually helps. Leave the warehouse and back offices on Wi-Fi 6 for now. Luna: And what about older devices — Windows 10 machines that still connect to these networks? Do they see problems too? Lucas: Not directly. Windows 10's Wi-Fi stack doesn't attempt multi-link operation. But here's the twist: some enterprise access points, when they detect a Wi-Fi 7 client, enable features like preamble puncturing and hybrid automatic repeat request. Those features can degrade performance for older clients because the AP splits airtime differently. Luna: So upgrading clients can actually hurt the experience for everyone else on the same network until the APs are fully configured. Lucas: Exactly. That's the hidden cost. IT teams need to check their access point firmware — most major vendors like Aruba, Cisco, and Juniper have released updates that let you disable Wi-Fi 7-specific optimisations per SSID. One more thing: Microsoft's updated Windows 11 hardware certification for 2026 includes a requirement for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. So any device certified after January 2026 must support it. That means even budget business laptops will have Wi-Fi 7 by the end of this year. Luna: So the technology is going to be in the devices whether you want it or not. The only question is whether your network is ready. Lucas: And that's the conversation IT leaders need to be having with their networking vendors right now. Get the firmware roadmaps, test the coexistence settings, and plan the SSID strategy.
