- 0:00Yeah, look around. Tell somebody you missed them
- 0:03this week. Let them know that you are praying
- 0:07for them and their sickness, right? And so you
- 0:11may hear it in my voice. We just came off of
- 0:14prayer and fasting, and every year by the time
- 0:18the Christmas feasting is done, my flesh... is
- 0:22never looking forward to it, but my spirit is
- 0:25always in anticipation for the week of prayer
- 0:28and fasting, and I was not at all feeling spiritual
- 0:33during prayer and fasting. I was down with COVID.
- 0:39I missed the prayer nights. I was so bummed,
- 0:42and I wasn't feeling like, God, I got to preach
- 0:46in a couple weeks. I need to hear from you, and
- 0:48all I can do is shiver under the covers. And
- 0:52so I was, though, reading as I've been beginning
- 0:56my new Bible reading program for this year. I
- 0:59was in the book of Job. There's nothing like
- 1:02starting out your Bible reading program in the
- 1:05book of Job. But when you do the chronological
- 1:08study, right, Connie, that's where you really
- 1:11are beginning. And so I was in the middle of
- 1:14Job, and I came across a verse, and immediately
- 1:17my spirit was quickened. And so I want us for
- 1:22a few moments today, it's very simple, and I'm
- 1:26reading this out of the Christian standard here,
- 1:29but in Job 22, 22, it says, receive instruction
- 1:35from his mouth and place his sayings in your
- 1:42heart. And I was struck by that, especially considering
- 1:49that the context of this verse was the book of
- 1:53Job. This was a man in suffering, right? Everything
- 1:59had been taken from him. He was a man in suffering.
- 2:04And here in the middle, we have this verse, receive
- 2:09instruction from his mouth and place his sayings
- 2:14in your heart. Last Sunday in Petersburg, Derek,
- 2:20we all love Derek. You all have to say yes because
- 2:22his sister Izzy is over there. Derek, who's at
- 2:25College, I had him preach for us in Petersburg.
- 2:29And so he did a great job. It was 18 minutes,
- 2:33which was one minute faster than the last time
- 2:36he had preached it. But it was so full. Wasn't
- 2:41it, Vanessa? So full of good things. I said,
- 2:43Derek, you've got to slow down just so we can
- 2:45digest what you've brought to the table. And
- 2:49I was just, as we were worshiping and those words
- 2:52were coming forth today, there was one thing
- 2:54that Derek said. He said, when we worship in
- 2:58suffering, it is not denial. Right? We're not
- 3:04denying that everything is going wrong in life
- 3:07when I worship. So when we worship in suffering,
- 3:11it is not denial. But worship in suffering is
- 3:15defiance. I was like, oh yeah, that was my big
- 3:20takeaway. I only needed 18 minutes to hear that.
- 3:22Because I thought of the number of times that
- 3:25I stood in that front row. All my life I've been
- 3:28a front row worshiper. It's the best place to
- 3:31be. And there's room for others. But I remember
- 3:35in moments standing, God, my husband thinks he's
- 3:38dying. God, I don't know if this child in me
- 3:41is going to come out with a heart that is healthy.
- 3:44And I remember those, and I say it to you often,
- 3:48my most significant moments of worship, because
- 3:50it's in those moments that I did feel defiance.
- 3:54Satan, I don't care what you're doing. I don't
- 3:58care what the circumstance is. I'm going to worship,
- 4:01right? And there's that defiance that kind of
- 4:04arises out of that. I was like, man, Derek, that
- 4:07is so good. I'm going to worship in defiance.
- 4:11And there's some of that that has to kind of,
- 4:14You know, you kind of got to get a little bit
- 4:15of a backbone for that in a way, spiritual backbone
- 4:18to say, I am not subject to this life. I am not
- 4:24subject to the enemy and his opposition. I'm
- 4:27not subject to situations. I will worship. I
- 4:33will worship. And so Job is a great lesson in
- 4:38this. And so I want us, for a few moments today,
- 4:42there's two parts to this verse, right? So we're
- 4:45going to spend a few moments in the first part.
- 4:49Receive instruction from his mouth. I hope you
- 4:57have a notebook today. Should I be taking notes?
- 5:03If not, I can find you one. Pull out your notebook.
- 5:09Receive instruction from his mouth. We just came
- 5:14off prayer and fasting, and we often talk about
- 5:17prayer, don't we? We often talk about intercession
- 5:22and making requests before the Lord. And we quote
- 5:27the verse, you have not because you what? Ask
- 5:31not. And so when we think about our prayer lives,
- 5:37we are often thinking of that. I better start
- 5:42asking. I better start requesting. I better come
- 5:44boldly into throne room to make my request known.
- 5:50And that's good, and that's proper, and that's
- 5:54right. However, how many of you have a friend
- 5:59or a family member that is a talker? How many
- 6:06of you, that is you? And in those conversations,
- 6:14you can't hardly get a word in, right? They're
- 6:19just talking, talking, talking. It's a, Todd.
- 6:24Catherine and Todd will need marriage counseling
- 6:26following this. I'm pretty sure Todd's not the
- 6:30talker. She forgives him. When you are talking,
- 6:41talking, talking, at what point are you able
- 6:44to stop and listen? And so my question for us
- 6:50today is, what does your prayer life look like?
- 6:56What does your prayer life, Monday, Tuesday,
- 7:00Wednesday, Thursday, da -da -da -da -da, what
- 7:02does it look like? Are you a talker? Are you
- 7:09a listener? Do you ever stop to listen? Or do
- 7:14you just talk, talk, talk, talk, God's ear off?
- 7:17Right? What does your prayer life look like?
- 7:22One of the most famous men in the realm of spiritual
- 7:28formation is Dallas Willard. He's got the classic
- 7:34book, The Celebration of Discipline. It's an
- 7:37awesome book. But he says this, it is much more
- 7:43important to cultivate the quiet inward space
- 7:49of a constant listening than to always be approaching
- 7:56God for specific direction. Now, I'm going to
- 8:00say that again. It is much more important to,
- 8:04and this word cultivate is a key word there.
- 8:08To cultivate means we have to do something to
- 8:12make this space. To cultivate the quiet, inward
- 8:17space of a constant listening than to always
- 8:22be approaching God for specific direction. When
- 8:25I read this, what I immediately thought was,
- 8:28this is the difference between striving and abiding.
- 8:36The difference between striving and abiding.
- 8:41When I am constantly coming to God for, God,
- 8:45I need direction. God, I need answer. God, I
- 8:47need this. God, I need this. There's sometimes
- 8:48a striving in that because we're contending for
- 8:52something. But I feel like what he's talking
- 8:56about is more the place of abiding with God.
- 9:01And when you're in a place of abiding, I cannot
- 9:05live in my household with my family and not hear
- 9:10what they say. They talk, right? And so abiding
- 9:17means I'm not just always talking to God. I need,
- 9:21I need, I need, I need, I need help. I'm desperate.
- 9:23Ah! That can be what sometimes that feels like
- 9:27because we're so worried and concerned. What
- 9:30he is saying here is, listen, there's a space,
- 9:33an inward space in our spiritual lives where
- 9:38there is a quiet place of hearing God, of listening
- 9:46to God. And it's impossible to be a listener
- 9:51if you are a talker. We think we can do multiple,
- 9:57we can multitask, but you cannot multitask talking
- 10:01and listening if you're really going to hear
- 10:05what is being said. And so I believe that there
- 10:10is, we should contend for the victory. We sang
- 10:13it today. There is that place of contending for
- 10:17something, of believing for something. But I
- 10:21believe there's also this place. That is a quiet,
- 10:27just, God, what are you saying? And this is the
- 10:34place that I want us to spend a few moments talking
- 10:36about today because it's not an easy place for
- 10:40us in our Western culture. And so in 1 Samuel
- 10:4319, verse 11, this is the account of Elijah.
- 10:49Now, we are a Pentecostal people. And previous
- 10:54to this encounter with God, Elijah has the encounter
- 10:58with the 400 prophets of Baal, or if you remember
- 11:01that. If you don't know that account, you should
- 11:04look it up in 1 Samuel and read it. It's amazing.
- 11:07He's the one prophet of God and all these other
- 11:10Baal gods that he's up against in competition.
- 11:14We're going to call down fire from God, and we're
- 11:18going to see whose God is alive. And so they...
- 11:22call on their God, and nothing happens. And so
- 11:25Elijah steps up to the plate, and he says, bring
- 11:30on the water. Anybody try to start a fire with
- 11:33wet wood? He's like, pour on the water, on the
- 11:37fire. I'm not going to make this easy for God.
- 11:43And he calls down fire, right? And then all of
- 11:48the prophets of Baal are killed. And then, so
- 11:51he just has this experience. Oh, yeah, that would
- 11:55be a great Pentecostal experience, wouldn't it?
- 11:58Us Pentecostals would be like dancing around
- 12:01the fire with Elijah. Yeah! Where we find Elijah
- 12:06next, though, is facing Jezebel and running out
- 12:12of fear for his life because he's afraid she'll
- 12:16kill him. And I love that God, what he does for
- 12:22Elijah is he says, Elijah, it's time to take
- 12:25a nap. I'm going to give you some food, too.
- 12:29Here's some food, and here, take some sleep.
- 12:32I love that. And out of that place, then, Elijah
- 12:37gets up and runs for 40 days to a cave. And it's
- 12:43in the cave. I mean, a cave doesn't sound like
- 12:48a great place to be, right? After this great
- 12:51mountaintop God experience of calling down fire
- 12:55from heaven, he's alone in a cave. And it's in
- 13:00this place that God begins to speak to Elijah.
- 13:04And it sets Elijah up for some of his final assignments
- 13:08from heaven of anointing a new king and anointing
- 13:12a new prophet. And so it's in this place that
- 13:17God meets with Elijah and says to Elijah, go
- 13:20out and stand on the mountain in the presence
- 13:24of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.
- 13:31Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains
- 13:36apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord.
- 13:43But the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind,
- 13:48there was an earthquake. But the Lord was not
- 13:51in the earthquake. After the earthquake came
- 13:56a fire. But the Lord was not in the fire. And
- 14:01after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah
- 14:07heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face.
- 14:11and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.
- 14:17We think that God speaking to us is going to
- 14:20look and sound a certain way, and sometimes we
- 14:24miss it, because the truth is that God's voice
- 14:27is not always an obvious thing. It is a voice
- 14:32that we have to learn to know in our life. And
- 14:39that comes with intentionally listening for the
- 14:44voice. But if we're so busy always talking, talking,
- 14:50talking to God, that we're never exercising our
- 14:54ears to hear. This voice that is powerful enough
- 15:00to create the universe. His voice. His breath
- 15:08created the universe. Yet it's a voice that we
- 15:15have to tune ourselves to. It's a voice that
- 15:20we have to learn. Jesus said it, didn't he? He
- 15:25said, my sheep know my voice. Have we made room
- 15:34in our prayer life? to know the voice of our
- 15:38shepherd. I want you to think about your prayer
- 15:44life in terms of a pie chart. How many of you
- 15:47like pie charts? Pie charts are nice because
- 15:50they give you a quick overview of something,
- 15:52right? And so if you have your notebook, you
- 15:56can make yourself a pie chart. Otherwise, I want
- 15:58you in just the palm of your hand to make yourself
- 16:01a little pie chart. And I want you in that pie
- 16:04chart to divide it, to divide it into two, the
- 16:10ratio of your prayer life that you would say,
- 16:13I spend this much time talking, I spend this
- 16:17much time listening. I just want you off the
- 16:21top of your head, 10 seconds. I want you just
- 16:24to, hmm, I spend a quarter of the time listening
- 16:28and three quarters of the time talking, whatever
- 16:31it is. If you're really honest, maybe you would
- 16:35say, I spend 99 .9 % of the time talking. And
- 16:41I might listen a little bit, but the truth is
- 16:44that when I'm listening for God, it's, oh, I
- 16:46want an elder to pray over me and give me a prophetic
- 16:50word. You know what I'm saying? I'm not talking
- 16:54about that kind of a voice. I'm talking about
- 16:56you, your spirit knowing, Abba, Father. Your
- 17:03spirit knowing the voice. of your father. You
- 17:08don't need any other man to speak for him, you
- 17:12knowing the voice of God. And so how, that sounds
- 17:18so good, but how do I practically do this? I
- 17:23feel a little passionate about this because we
- 17:27live in a world that is pushing in on you. We
- 17:32live in a world where you are constantly hearing
- 17:35the world. You have it on your phone. You have
- 17:41it on your TV. You have it on your devices. It's
- 17:44unending noise of this world pushing in on you.
- 17:51And so there is in us, what word did we hear?
- 17:56Cultivate. It is in us to develop space. to hear
- 18:02the voice of our God. It is in us to say, I'm
- 18:08making room to hear from you. This is why we
- 18:16talk about families making room around a dinner
- 18:19table. Why? So they could actually, in the busyness
- 18:23of life, hear one another talk to each other.
- 18:26What do we do as families in that moment? We're
- 18:29making space for one another. And so today when
- 18:34we are talking about how can I cultivate a space
- 18:38in my life, in my prayer life, to hear from God,
- 18:42it's really not that hard. We do it by giving
- 18:48ourself to the Word of God, your Bible. We do
- 18:53it through stillness. This is hard. This is hard
- 19:00for a lot of people to be still, to stop being
- 19:05busy, to stop, oh, I'm so busy, I'm so busy,
- 19:09I'm so busy. That is the world's voice speaking,
- 19:14that this is the expectation of successful people
- 19:18to be busy. When the word says to be still, and
- 19:25what? No, I'm God. Be still. How do I be still?
- 19:33When do I stop? Even in my prayer time, I'm not
- 19:36being still. I'm asking, I'm asking, I'm asking.
- 19:40And God is just saying, would you just be still
- 19:42for a minute? Just stop for a minute. Quiet.
- 19:51Many of us don't like to be quiet. To turn off
- 19:58the noise. To turn off our phones. You can turn
- 20:08off your notifications. I don't tell that to
- 20:12Darren. I tell Darren to turn on his notifications.
- 20:18But most of us are so attached. We're at the
- 20:25beck and call of every outside voice that we
- 20:30cannot stop and be quiet. Even in our prayer
- 20:33time, I've got to play worship music. I love
- 20:37worship music as much as the next person, but
- 20:40there is a place in my prayer life where it has
- 20:43to be silent. I don't need another worship leader
- 20:48worshiping for me. Do you know, I'm not a worship
- 20:51leader. I'm not gifted musically. But when I'm
- 20:55walking and I don't have any other noise going,
- 20:58do you know what often starts coming out of me?
- 21:01Songs. Songs, I'm like, wow, this could be kind
- 21:06of a good worship song. I'm not gifted in music.
- 21:09The worship team would probably laugh at me.
- 21:14But if I have worship music playing, is that
- 21:18going to happen? No. But in that moment of quietness,
- 21:24There arises out of me a song that nobody else
- 21:27on earth is singing to the Lord. It is my own.
- 21:32It doesn't belong to anybody else. This is my
- 21:35worship and my worship alone. But if there's
- 21:39noise, if there's not quietness, that can't happen.
- 21:49And so it's not difficult. but it does require
- 21:53us pushing back. It does. I love Peter Drucker
- 22:00is a leadership guru, and I love it. He maybe
- 22:05oversimplifies it, but he says this, listening,
- 22:09which is the first competence of leadership,
- 22:13is not a skill. It is a discipline. All you have
- 22:20to do is keep your mouth shut. It's very simple.
- 22:27Sometimes we just need to keep our mouths shut
- 22:29so that God can open his and begin to release
- 22:32words to you and begin to release his instructions
- 22:36to you. All we have to do is keep our mouths
- 22:42shut. I think it's interesting in the book of
- 22:44Job because if you read through the book, We
- 22:47were in chapter 22 when we read our text. And
- 22:52all through the middle of Job, he has his friends
- 22:56talking, right? His friends have input. They're
- 23:00all going back and forth trying to figure out
- 23:04why Job has everything going wrong in his life.
- 23:09And finally, finally, we get to chapter 40. Because
- 23:16in like 38, I think 38, finally God steps up
- 23:20and starts to speak. And when God starts to speak
- 23:25in the book of Job, I mean, what else is man
- 23:27going to say? And Job finally gets this as well.
- 23:31And he says in verse 3 of chapter 40, Job answered
- 23:35the Lord, I am unworthy. How can I reply to you?
- 23:40I put my hand over my mouth. Maybe that's just
- 23:46what we need to do sometimes, put our hand over
- 23:50our mouth. He said, I spoke once, but I have
- 23:54no answer twice, but now I will say no more.
- 24:02And then over in chapter 42, God says, you said,
- 24:08listen now, and I will speak, I will question
- 24:11you, and you shall answer me. And then Job says,
- 24:15ears have heard of you, but now my eyes have
- 24:18seen you. When did Job receive the revelation
- 24:22of God? When he finally closed his mouth and
- 24:27just listened. Suddenly he had a revelation.
- 24:32I had heard of you, God, now I see you. There's
- 24:36something that happens when we hear the voice
- 24:40of God that cannot happen outside of his voice.
- 24:44His voice is creative. His voice is life -giving.
- 24:49Faith comes by hearing his voice. And until we
- 24:53hear it, it's secondhand. Well, I know he's spoken
- 25:00to Candace. I've heard what he's told Candace.
- 25:03I've heard what he's told Linda. But then you
- 25:07hear God for yourself, and suddenly I have heard
- 25:12of this God. Now I have seen God. Why? Because
- 25:17you've heard the voice of God. We've got to stop
- 25:22talking and listen. Just stop talking for a while
- 25:27because the truth is he knows what you're going
- 25:30through. He knows your situation. He knows details
- 25:34you don't know about your situation. And so we
- 25:40don't need to inform him, so maybe we should
- 25:42just stop for a while and listen to what he has
- 25:47to say. That's hard. It's hard. But it's easier
- 25:56when you hear the voice. The hard gives way then
- 26:01for the easy. And so we want to hear God. And
- 26:06then the second part of that passage, it said
- 26:10receive the instruction. So we've got to listen
- 26:13for the instruction, right, from his mouth. And
- 26:17then it says, and place his sayings in your heart.
- 26:23You then are responsible for the instruction
- 26:27that was given, right? And so I think of this
- 26:32when, okay, we've moved now into the middle of
- 26:40January. I don't know about you other gardeners,
- 26:42but I've gotten my seed catalog. I've ordered
- 26:45a second seed catalog. Although I'm determined
- 26:49to just go through all the current seeds because
- 26:52I have enough seeds that could feed the whole
- 26:54church all summer probably. But, you know, I
- 26:58can't help it. I get lured in by all these seeds.
- 27:02And so those days a couple of weeks ago when
- 27:06it was like spring, right, I was like, I know
- 27:10my goal was to organize inside, but I got to
- 27:13get out there. I got to get in the garden. I
- 27:16still have a chance to plant garlic. I thought
- 27:19I had missed my window, but I can plant garlic.
- 27:23I can't even tell you the weeds that had become
- 27:26trees in my garden. Listen, I could not, as much
- 27:31as I loved the garlic seed and when it planted,
- 27:34I couldn't just go out and put it in the garden.
- 27:38I had to violently remove with a shovel, a literal
- 27:44shovel, tree weeds. What was I doing? I was making
- 27:51space for the garden to receive the seed. This
- 28:03is the pushback that I'm talking about. There
- 28:08are sometimes things in our life that we need
- 28:11to get rid of if we're going to make room to
- 28:14hear his voice and receive his instruction. And
- 28:19I was thinking about this this week because I
- 28:23had a customer come through my shop, and she
- 28:26came through super early one morning. And I said,
- 28:30oh, you're here really early today. She said,
- 28:33yeah, band. an eighth grader and a freshman in
- 28:38band, and they have to be at school at 6 .50
- 28:41every morning. David, you're sitting there smiling
- 28:45like you know what we're talking about here.
- 28:48And I start thinking about this, and I think
- 28:51about sports, because sports is no different,
- 28:55right? Kids are out there practicing a lot of
- 28:59times hours that you're all still in bed. And
- 29:03what are they doing when they're out there practicing
- 29:06band, practicing their football or basketball?
- 29:10They are being coached. And so there's this voice
- 29:16that they have attuned themselves to who is the
- 29:20coach or the director. And so I thought yesterday,
- 29:26the world has no problem. Calling for sacrifice.
- 29:35Sports has no problem calling for your kids'
- 29:40time and your money. Band, same way. No problem
- 29:50asking for their time. You don't need to sleep,
- 29:53growing kids. Yes, parents, $90 today. There's
- 29:59no problem that they have in asking for that.
- 30:04And what are they doing? They are forcing the
- 30:07kids to make space to hear from their coaches
- 30:11and directors. There is something in us that
- 30:16needs that kind of tenacity. If the world has
- 30:20no problem asking for us to make space for them,
- 30:23why do we have problems calling for us to make
- 30:27space to hear the voice of our God? There's that
- 30:30kind of ruthlessness that says, you know what,
- 30:32that's all so temporal, and there's a place for
- 30:37it, and I get it, but it is not the most important
- 30:40thing, right? So we unapologetically, I even
- 30:46today unapologetically call for you to make space
- 30:51to put yourself under the voice of your coach,
- 30:55the voice of your director, and hear what he
- 30:58has to say about your life. Make the space. And
- 31:04so in Deuteronomy chapter 30, verse 11, we're
- 31:09going to spend just a couple of moments in these.
- 31:12passages that are going to move us to the New
- 31:15Testament. But it says, now what I am commanding
- 31:19you today is not too difficult for you or beyond
- 31:25your reach. It is not up in heaven so that you
- 31:29have to ask who will ascend into heaven to get
- 31:32it and proclaim it to us so we may obey it. Nor
- 31:38is it beyond the sea so that you have to ask
- 31:40who will cross the sea to get it and proclaim
- 31:43it to us so we may obey it. No, the word is very
- 31:48near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart
- 31:55so you may obey it. I have this verse written
- 32:02in my kitchen. See, I set before you today life
- 32:07and prosperity, death and destruction. For I
- 32:10command you today to love the Lord your God,
- 32:12to walk in obedience to him, and keep his commands,
- 32:16decrees, and laws, that you will live and increase,
- 32:20and the Lord your God will bless you in the land
- 32:22you are entering to possess. This is an amazing
- 32:27verse because the context of it is the law. right?
- 32:31And we know that what the law does, it shows
- 32:35us how much we cannot obey it, how much we cannot
- 32:39keep it. But yet, in a way, this verse is foreshadowing
- 32:44the new covenant. It is saying the reality is
- 32:48God is wanting his word to be near to you. He's
- 32:52wanting it in your mouth. He's wanting it in
- 32:55your heart so that you can obey it. In fact,
- 33:00If we go to Romans 10, we see him quoting it
- 33:04in this passage. So he's going back and saying,
- 33:10okay, here's what it said back in Deuteronomy.
- 33:13Now here's the fulfillment of what he wrote about
- 33:16in Deuteronomy. And so in Romans 10, 4, he's
- 33:21talking about Christ being the culmination of
- 33:24the fulfillment of the law. And he says, so that
- 33:27there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.
- 33:33Moses writes this about the righteousness that
- 33:36is by the law. The person who does these things
- 33:39will live by them. But the righteous that is
- 33:44by faith says, do not say in your heart who will
- 33:47ascend to heaven, that is who is to bring Christ
- 33:51down, or who will ascend into the deep, that
- 33:55is to bring Christ up from the dead, but what
- 33:58does it say? The word is near you, is in your
- 34:01mouth and in your heart, that is the message
- 34:05concerning faith that we proclaim is this, if
- 34:10you declare Right? If you declare with your mouth,
- 34:14Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that
- 34:18God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
- 34:22Okay, so he's saying, what are they saying? Listen,
- 34:26this is not beyond us. The ways of the Lord,
- 34:31the word of the Lord is not so far off that we
- 34:34have to go up into heaven to find it or down
- 34:37into the deep to find it. No. It is near to you.
- 34:43It is in your mouth, and it is in your heart.
- 34:47And so this is why we declare with our mouth,
- 34:51Jesus is Lord, and it's also in our heart. So
- 34:55we what? We believe in our heart that Jesus is
- 34:59Lord. This is so powerful because the truth is
- 35:04that it says, It is with your heart that you
- 35:09believe and are justified, and your mouth that
- 35:11you profess your faith and are saved. So we see
- 35:17the connection. Deuteronomy is the context of
- 35:20following the law, which is impossible, but the
- 35:24foreshadow of what is to come. Emmanuel, God
- 35:30is with us. John chapter 1, Jesus became the
- 35:37Word, and the Word dwells among men. The Word
- 35:43has drawn near to you and I. It is in our mouth.
- 35:48It is in our heart. Jesus, the living Word, is
- 35:53near to us. This is not a God that's trying to
- 35:58make it difficult for us to obey and follow him.
- 36:02He's tried to make it as easy as he can to obey.
- 36:09And so now Jesus said this. In Luke, he said,
- 36:15when he was talking to the Pharisees, who like
- 36:19to overcomplicate it and make it hard, the Pharisees
- 36:24asked when the kingdom of God would come. And
- 36:29Jesus said it doesn't come with observation.
- 36:33They won't say see here or see there. It's not
- 36:36a kingdom on this earth. For indeed the kingdom
- 36:40is within you. The kingdom is within you. His
- 36:50word is in our mouth and it's in our heart. It
- 36:55is in us. And the heart of God is always, you
- 37:00can read it in Isaiah 59. He says, I'm going
- 37:04to put it in your mouth, my words in your mouth,
- 37:07on your lips, on the lips of your children and
- 37:10their descendants. In Jeremiah, he says, I put
- 37:14the law in their minds and on their hearts, and
- 37:17they will be my people and I their God. This
- 37:21is a God that has always longed to be in close,
- 37:25abiding relationship. He has words that he wants
- 37:30to speak to us, but we have to begin to listen.
- 37:35We have to change the dynamic of our prayer life,
- 37:39and maybe what would it look like if we spent
- 37:41a little more time listening? And so the question
- 37:47today is, what fills our heart? And what fills
- 37:51our mouth. Because maybe we need to make some
- 37:54space for God. Maybe we've got some attitudes
- 37:59that we need to deal with. Maybe we're so busy
- 38:03listening to the world that we have no space
- 38:06to listen to God. Receive instruction from his
- 38:12mouth and then place his sayings in your heart.
- 38:19Place his sayings in your heart. I'm going to
- 38:23ask if the team will come back up this morning.
- 38:28God will answer your prayers. God will do extraordinary
- 38:32things. How many of you have had God touch you
- 38:35in a miraculous way, right? In one of those only
- 38:42God can do moments that I love for, I believe
- 38:45for, I pray for, I expect. But that's only one
- 38:52aspect of our God. Our God wants to live and
- 38:57to dwell with us. I believe that he wants us
- 39:03to draw our ears close, anticipating his direction.
- 39:09God, what do you have today? God, what do you
- 39:12want to do this week? I was listening to a podcast
- 39:21this morning and this quote that said, Jesus
- 39:27is in our hearts, but grandpa is still in my
- 39:30bones. Jesus is in our hearts, but grandpa is
- 39:37still in our bones. We've been justified and
- 39:43redeemed, right? But sometimes we've still got
- 39:49a bit of that generational stuff in us, right?
- 39:52Sometimes there are generational curses that
- 39:55Jesus has to break. And sometimes we've not had
- 39:58an example in our family line of a good father,
- 40:01of a good mother. We've not learned how to be
- 40:06good parents. We've still got grandpa's stuff
- 40:10going on in our bones. And I believe that God,
- 40:17his desire is for us to choose to lean in and
- 40:23to hear from him on how to be a better parent,
- 40:28how to be a better husband, how to be a better
- 40:33wife, how to be a better son and a daughter,
- 40:36how to be a better friend, how to be a better
- 40:40worker, how to be a better steward. That isn't
- 40:45always a supernatural changed in the moment kind
- 40:48of a thing. That's the discipleship of being
- 40:53a follower of Jesus. And when I come across great
- 41:00people that I think are doing great things, and
- 41:05I want to learn from them, when I get around
- 41:09them, I don't spend all my time talking, do I?
- 41:12I listen. I need to hear how you've done life.
- 41:16I need to hear how you've walked with God. What
- 41:22would that look like if we do that to God himself?
- 41:26God, you created all this. You knit me together.
- 41:30You have a plan and a purpose for my life. I
- 41:33want to hear what you have to say about it. I
- 41:37want to hear what you have to say about this
- 41:39situation. My kid. This problem in my family,
- 41:45my business, my finances, my health. God, I want
- 41:53to hear what you have to say about it. And so
- 41:56this week, your assignment, you ready? You have
- 42:00an assignment. I want you this week to change
- 42:05your pie chart. I want you this week to move
- 42:10the needle on your pie chart. And I want you
- 42:15to spend more time listening than talking. Just
- 42:20for a week, give it a try. Just for a week, trust
- 42:24that God knows what you're going through, and
- 42:28so you don't have to inform him. And so just
- 42:31for this week, just be quiet, put your hand over
- 42:34your mouth, and listen. And just see what God
- 42:39says. See how he tells you to pray for that situation.
- 42:43See what instruction he gives. And so here's
- 42:49what we're going to do this morning. It's a quarter
- 42:52till, but see, we aren't governed by this world,
- 42:55right? And so you can prolong your lunch a little
- 42:59bit. And the team's going to lead us in a moment
- 43:02of worship. And I want you to just create an
- 43:06altar space. Maybe in your seat, maybe you need
- 43:10to come forward to the altar. And I want you
- 43:15to spend a few moments making space. I want you
- 43:19to spend a few moments just saying, God, I've
- 43:21had this attitude. God, I've been doing this
- 43:24behavior that's not been good. But what we want
- 43:27to do in these final moments is we want to create
- 43:30space so that this week we can spend our time
- 43:34listening. So that this week we can just give
- 43:37ourselves to abiding with the Father and saying,
- 43:40God, I've been speaking to you for 20 years.
- 43:42I'm just going to listen now to what you have
- 43:45to say. But first, we're going to deal with anything
- 43:50that might be clogging up that inward life. You
- 43:54might need to put some worship music away this
- 43:57week and say, yeah, I love Brandon Lake, whoever
- 44:07your favorite is. I love Stephanie Gretzinger,
- 44:11if you want a good cry. But I'm going to even
- 44:16silence that this week. And so I want you in
- 44:20this moment just to ask Holy Spirit, Holy Spirit,
- 44:23how do I make space this week to hear you? What
- 44:31do you want to put your finger on that's been
- 44:33occupying space that belongs to you, that belongs
- 44:38to your instruction? that belongs to your sayings.
- 44:42I want to just clear out closet space to make
- 44:45room for your voice, to make room for your direction
- 44:49this week, to say, God, I just don't know, so
- 44:52I'm just going to listen. I'm just going to hear
- 44:54what you might want to say to me this week. And
- 44:59so let's just begin to turn our eyes, just kind
- 45:03of forget right now about everything that you're
- 45:05going home to today. Begin to put your gaze on
- 45:09Jesus, the living word, Emmanuel, God with us.
- 45:15I want you just to put your eyes on him right
- 45:17now. And I want you just to open up your spirit,
- 45:21open up your heart, open up your life, and say,
- 45:25Holy Spirit, come in and begin to speak. Come
- 45:29in and begin to speak. Come in and begin to speak.
- 45:33And some of you, I feel like you do, you need
- 45:36to make a move to the altar to present it before
- 45:38the Lord, to release it before the Lord, a physical
- 45:42act of releasing it before the Lord as we worship.
- 45:46Just for a few moments, we're going to worship
- 45:48and give space for him to come in and begin to
- 45:52speak.
