- 0:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I have mixed feelings about that.
- 0:35[SPEAKER_00]: Like I was very happy last year getting the career grand slam.
- 0:39[SPEAKER_00]: It's awesome.
- 0:39[SPEAKER_00]: He is one of the greats.
- 0:41[SPEAKER_00]: I wanted to see someone else, whether that's Sam Burns, Scottie Chefler, I'm a big fan of his.
- 0:46[SPEAKER_00]: So there were a lot of other people I would have rather than one, but all things considered can't complain, but I'm really excited for spring, I'll be back out there on my element, shooting photos, videos, really is my favorite time of the year, even though we still have a good five months until the fall, I'm excited for Saturday.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_01]: Ryan Abert, as long as we're talking about other sports to kick this thing off, are you still playing hockey like seven days a week?
- 1:12[SPEAKER_02]: Not quite seven days a week, but at least one, sometimes two, got ourselves a win on Sunday morning.
- 1:32[SPEAKER_01]: and uh... get a victory and remain tied for first there we go man one of these days i'd like to uh... get over there and watch you skate around that i think that'd be awesome so should uh... welcome anytime it's a it's a fun fun time out there absolutely yeah uh... i've tripped over to watch jessie critton didn't play in his band one of these days i got
- 1:52[SPEAKER_01]: I got to get with our man Brady and watch him play guitar.
- 1:57[SPEAKER_01]: Check you out on the ice, Carson.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_01]: I'd like to play some golf with you one of these days.
- 2:02[SPEAKER_01]: Always fall down a line a little bit, but we can make it happen.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_00]: For sure.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_01]: It's this big week for OU man.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_01]: Big week, huge week, obviously.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_01]: Spring football games here.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_01]: Now, full disclosure, I'm not going to be there for the first time in, like since 2004, I'm not going to be covering the OU spring game.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_01]: My little girl is getting married on Saturday and we're all very fired about that.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_01]: It is complete chaos here in the Hoover household and has been for several weeks now, but my poor wife, she's doing like 10 of everything.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_01]: Whatever you gotta do to get ready for a wedding, she's doing it 10 times.
- 2:40[SPEAKER_01]: It's amazing.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_01]: She's quite the woman.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_02]: Anyway, yeah, we certainly appreciate Holly and wait to hear everything about how this weekend goes
- 2:52[SPEAKER_02]: I'm sure starting tomorrow things will even get kicked up into a different gear.
- 2:57[SPEAKER_01]: Oh yeah, starting today.
- 2:59[SPEAKER_01]: As soon as I finish wrap up the podcast, I go drive to the airport and pick up my sister who's flying in from Alaska for the wedding.
- 3:05[SPEAKER_01]: So it's all in man.
- 3:07[SPEAKER_01]: We are the gates have opened and we are steaming down the track.
- 3:12[SPEAKER_01]: So, but I gotta say it's kind of a coincidence.
- 3:15[SPEAKER_01]: The last time, we're gonna open this thing with Spring Football.
- 3:18[SPEAKER_01]: The last time I hosted the podcast, last time Ryan was unable to step in and I think we didn't have Brady available.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, what Heineky was at the NFL Combine?
- 3:29[SPEAKER_01]: And he was telling people, I'm not giving up yet.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_01]: I'm here at the Pro Day or the Combine.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_01]: I'm meeting NFL people, but I'm not done playing college football yet.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_01]: Well, today,
- 3:40[SPEAKER_01]: I'm back behind the mic, and we see that Owen Heineke is still trying to get his fifth year as a football player.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_01]: On Thursday, he's going to be in Norman, not necessarily signing autographs.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to be specifically at Cleveland County District Court at a special hearing, Owen and his legal team are asking for district judge's dad buckman to rule on his NCAA appeal, which is an appeal of an appeal, I think, or I don't know how many times this is going on.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_01]: The NCAA basically even came out and said,
- 4:08[SPEAKER_01]: Here's why we're denying it.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody stop complaining to us.
- 4:12[SPEAKER_01]: Here's why we're denying it.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_01]: And Heinekian, his team said, no, that's not good enough.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_01]: And here's why you need to grant it.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_01]: It's going back and forth.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_01]: Ryan Abers going to cover that for us.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_01]: It's Thursday.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_01]: It's a Ryan.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_01]: I'll turn it over to you.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_01]: What's the latest with, uh, Oh, Heinekian in his situation?
- 4:26[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think right now, the biggest thing is that Owen Heineke filed some paperwork with the Owen Heineke's legal team, I should say, filed some paperwork with the Cleveland County courthouse, and basically said, hey, these are the things that the NCAA said, you know, we didn't do
- 4:47[SPEAKER_02]: in our initial appeal and here's all the proof and the initial cases, the cases that have the hinge on the same issue that the NCAA has ruled in favor of the student athlete receiving an extra year and it'll be fascinating to see how it plays out.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not going to write down in stone either way that he's going to win or he's going to lose but I will say
- 5:15[SPEAKER_02]: just judging by what I know of that balkman and I've seen him work in many cases throughout the years plenty of them connected to OU athletics in some way or another that he's generally a very fair judge and I've got to say it think that if
- 5:33[SPEAKER_02]: They lay that out, the way that it looks like they've laid out in the paperwork in court and the NCAA doesn't have a really valid reason to say, hey, this is why this is different.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_02]: It's not going to surprise me at all if Owen Heineke gets ruled eligible and, you know, the Seniors have a really, really big massive piece to add to their linebacker group.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_01]: My suspicion is, in this particular case, I'm just kind of directed this way, they found an appeal that was granted to a, and I'm probably getting this backwards, a basketball play, or a valuable player who switched to basketball and was not similarly penalized.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_01]: And that wasn't information that was available when they turned down the initial appeal for a six-year.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_01]: But the legal team found it his lawyer's found it and said, hey, here's the perfect example of what we're trying to do.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_01]: You've already granted this to another athlete in another sport, different gender.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_01]: But I think my suspicion is, again, no predictions here, but my suspicion is they're going to come back and say,
- 6:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know what this kid needs to play another year that they've they've established precedent legal precedent with the appeals and everything and I think he's gonna get another year.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_01]: I think the NCAA is probably gonna it's probably looking at that going yeah we're screwed we need to just back off.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_01]: Um, let's switch it up this way, uh, preventable linebackers are, would, would look like, it looks like they're going to, they lost some talent obviously, but it looks like Carson, they're going to be in good shape, uh, regardless of how this turns out, but man, what a boost that defense would get if I want Heineky gets another year, uh, second on the team last year.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_01]: I got a stats right here 40, uh, 74 tackles.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_01]: That's 34 solos and 40 assists.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_01]: 12 tackles for loss.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_01]: This is a former walk on who hadn't started a game at linebacker before this season.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_01]: Comes on a mint season, takes over the starting row for Kobe McKenzie.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_01]: And he's just all he is is productive.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_01]: He's productive in the past game.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_01]: He rushes the quarterback.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_01]: He's knocked a couple of footballs out.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_01]: The guy is all over the field.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_01]: And what would that do, Carson, for Oklahoma's defense overall in that linebacker core in particular?
- 7:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, I think with him back, you go from this linebacker core can get by to this linebacker core could be among the best in the SEC, because I mean, you look at the top of the linebacker room say the linebacker room, Sam's Heineky.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_00]: Kip Lewis Cole Sullivan, you feel pretty good about that Lewis proven in this system.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_00]: Sullivan really came on late for Michigan last year, made some big plays in Norman to when those teams played.
- 8:24[SPEAKER_00]: It leaves guys like Taylorheim, and we know that he's at the very least bruised, we don't know the extent of his injury, but it doesn't sound amazing.
- 8:32[SPEAKER_00]: James Nestle, we've heard good things about him in camp, but he's not very proven, Marcus James dealt with some injury bugs too, so it is somewhat thin as far as players that have been experienced in this defense.
- 8:51[SPEAKER_00]: It's hard to argue there would be many better aligned back rooms across the country, not just the SEC.
- 8:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that could be really, really good.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_01]: Let's talk the spring game itself.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_01]: Let's see, ABER, do you know?
- 9:04[SPEAKER_01]: We're expecting a decision on Thursday, right, from Judge Baldwin.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_02]: I would imagine so.
- 9:11[SPEAKER_02]: I can't imagine that this will stretch into a multi-day deal, so, you know, I guess, you know, depending on what happens here, we could see Owen Feet, Owen Heineke on the field, as soon as this weekend, I would sort of doubt that that would be the case.
- 9:27[SPEAKER_02]: Regardless, although certainly he would be there, if he's granted the extra year, but it'll be
- 9:34[SPEAKER_02]: fascinating to see how this thing plays out, how long it takes, how long that balkman takes to ultimately make his decision, because this case has been sort of looming over, oh, you spring and, you know,
- 9:51[SPEAKER_02]: Like Carson said, not that you wouldn't feel good about the top of their line-backer group either way, but if you add Owen Heineke with what he was able to do last year and the growth, I mean, this is still a fairly young football player in the sense of, as he's been on the field, the growth that we saw from him last year and the potential for future growth, I think that just ramps it up incredibly when you add him into a mix potentially with
- 10:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you remember what I'm going to say maybe about 20 years ago, actually it might have been a little before that, as I was, I think I was covering Oklahoma State when the NCAA cannot, and said, you need to have a certain number of practices without helmets and no shoulder pads, and then you need to have a certain number of practices with just hell.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_01]: So there was that, the acclamation period that called it, it's been in place forever now, but when I started covering college football, that was a brand new thing.
- 10:48[SPEAKER_01]: You don't just throw guys out there with a bunch of helmets and pads and go slam them into each other.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_01]: No contact for the first three practice or something or something like that.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_01]: I wouldn't think Owen Heinecky is probably not in game shape, right?
- 11:00[SPEAKER_01]: If he hasn't been able to practice with the team and stuff like that.
- 11:05[SPEAKER_01]: But if he is out there, that'll be good.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure they'll put him on the video board and introduce him and he will get a standing ovation from the crowd that's coming.
- 11:12[SPEAKER_01]: I expect a fairly large crowd because the weather seems like, please don't let me jinx it.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_01]: The weather on Saturday seems like it's gonna be cooperative.
- 11:20[SPEAKER_01]: right you got you guys know what I'm worried about outdoor weddings but let's bring game itself Saturday noon kickoff kickoff it's a real game this time it's a real scrimmage no crimson combine glad that thing found the gray after just one year but yeah kicks off at noon oh you fans are going to get a sneak peek for how far the program has come in year five under brand vanibels coming off their first college football playoff Abraham what are you
- 11:49[SPEAKER_01]: position-wise, what position are you going to be really focused on this spring?
- 11:55[SPEAKER_02]: Well, before I answer that question, I want to go back to the owner, Oh, and Haniki thing.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 12:00[SPEAKER_02]: Imagine they did this.
- 12:02[SPEAKER_02]: Imagine they had Brian Bosworth.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_02]: come out in the t-shirt.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_02]: You know what's t-shirt I'm talking about.
- 12:08[SPEAKER_02]: Oh my gosh.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_02]: And introduce Owen Heineke on Owen Field on Saturday.
- 12:16[SPEAKER_02]: How much just that would bring the house down.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_02]: And if you're going to, you know, set it up for drama, that'd be the way to do it.
- 12:25[SPEAKER_02]: So just an idea of you folks.
- 12:27[SPEAKER_02]: If certainly if the ruling comes down on your side of a way that, you know, to bring Owen Hynik into the house, but position wise, I mean, make it happen.
- 12:38[SPEAKER_02]: Amen.
- 12:39[SPEAKER_02]: It would be so much fun.
- 12:41[SPEAKER_02]: And we know he has the t-shirt.
- 12:43[SPEAKER_02]: We know it exists.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_02]: We all saw the 60 for 60 or 30 for 30, excuse me, thing.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_02]: E60 and 30 for 30 sort of get used to my mind.
- 12:53[SPEAKER_02]: But, you know, as far as position groups, there's all kinds of ones that act throughout there, you know, we talked a lot about tight ends last week, but I'm going to go with the running backs to see these these freshmen running backs, you know, we've all heard so much about Jonathan Hatton and Patton and some of those other guys that I think
- 13:14[SPEAKER_02]: getting an eye on those guys and seeing what they can do a little bit even if it's not you know full throttle.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_02]: I think that can start giving us an idea of what things are going to look like beyond just Xavier Robinson and Tory Blaylock who we all you know sort of know what they can give them.
- 13:32[SPEAKER_02]: But I think it'll be fun to get an eye on those young running backs but there's so many positions that'll be really interesting and
- 13:44[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I mean, I agree with what Abers said about.
- 13:46[SPEAKER_00]: There really isn't a position group that isn't interesting in the spring game, whether it's one like the running backs that has a lot of turnover, a lot of new guys or kicker where we know it's Tate Sandell and we just want to see that guy kick the football again.
- 13:59[SPEAKER_00]: But what I'm really excited for or to see the defensive ends, especially after how good Taylor Wein was last year, he's gonna be a starter.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_00]: That is not a question.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_00]: But seeing how the other guy's shuttle in there really intrigues me, whether that's a guy like Danny Okoye, that showed some really good flashes.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_00]: I was brilliant at times last year at a poju at a bore.
- 14:19[SPEAKER_00]: Not necessarily the five star, just star player, all conference player, that some people were expecting when he came to Norman, but definitely took some tries and then you get a guy like Jay Krell.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_00]: We've heard nothing but amazing things about him being a true freshman.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_00]: former blue ship guy, everything we're hearing is this guy's knowledgeable, he's violent, all the things that you want out of your next star, Eddrescher, and then Kenny is a wallo, UTSA transfer, where does he shut a limb, whether that's D-in, defensive tackle?
- 14:47[SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot to watch on that position alongside wine, who is the L-S-D-C, a returner of the star, breakout guy last year on the defensive
- 14:56[SPEAKER_00]: Um, there's just so much to watch and I'm just curious to see who gets the other side of the edge, um, alongside wine and who, who are the key backups and how do they look?
- 15:05[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's going to be fascinating.
- 15:09[SPEAKER_01]: I would normally being an old high school tight-end.
- 15:13[SPEAKER_01]: I would normally say, especially with the drama we've seen at that position with the new position coach, Jason Witton, is your position coach now, you know, Hall of Famer, the shortcomings that they've had, the transfers that have tried to come in and make an impact and were, you know, abject failures in a lot of ways.
- 15:31[SPEAKER_01]: They've got, I think, eight tight-ends on the roster right now, and everyone, including the freshman,
- 15:39[SPEAKER_01]: very captivating to me like that's those of the guys I want to see I want to see a fan door selects for real I want to see if Hayden Hanson is for real I want to see Rocky Bears is for real I want to see how much progress under Jason Whitton these young guys like Trenay Washington Kate McIntyre who's been out for his entire career right injury wise I want to see what those guys have done
- 16:01[SPEAKER_01]: But I got to go a different position after having said all that I got to go a different position.
- 16:05[SPEAKER_01]: It's back up quarterback.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, how interesting is the backup quarterback position at Oklahoma when it's everybody's assuming it's going to be a true freshman, right?
- 16:16[SPEAKER_01]: Whitney Bauer, the former Mercer quarterback, transfer, jet new who was an Oklahoma state commit, right?
- 16:24[SPEAKER_01]: And before he flipped and committed Oklahoma.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_01]: uh... obviously janitors the starter he's the all stars supposed to be uh... expecting to be hopefully this year but then you you say who's is back up if something happens to him and something didn't happen last year don't forget broke the thumb and missed missed a game missed a whatever you know the little the little stretch that he missed
- 16:47[SPEAKER_01]: didn't ever get his thumb back right and they didn't really have anybody to go to that they said you're going to be better than him as he struggles through this and give it let's give him a couple more they didn't have that they didn't have that luxury so who is it this year?
- 17:02[SPEAKER_01]: John Matiers of a brave tough hearty running quarterback they're going to ask a lot of him again this year especially probably in the running game maybe they get some things figured out and they don't have to but if he is running the football
- 17:16[SPEAKER_01]: You better know who your backup is.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_01]: You better know who your backup is.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_01]: And right now it's Bobentley.
- 17:22[SPEAKER_01]: We presume, or is it Whitney Bauer who kind of defaults there from last year, six, six, two, 40 is what new Bauer is.
- 17:29[SPEAKER_01]: He's that prototype pocket quarterback pocket passer.
- 17:33[SPEAKER_01]: That's probably not going to fit necessarily what, you know, Ben Arbuckle and Brent Vendibles want the offense to look like.
- 17:38[SPEAKER_01]: So look out for Bobentley.
- 17:41[SPEAKER_01]: keep a very sharp eye on.
- 17:42[SPEAKER_01]: He is number eight, six, one, two, ten.
- 17:44[SPEAKER_01]: Good looking freshman.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_01]: We've seen him throw the ball this spring.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_01]: He's very impressive.
- 17:48[SPEAKER_01]: I just want to see if he has like this vast knowledge of the library of offense that Ben Arbuckle has thrown at him, or if he's got this real focus vision of here's the bump Bentley package as a true freshman.
- 18:03[SPEAKER_01]: Gonna be interesting to see anybody.
- 18:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, anybody got any
- 18:10[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, I think, you know, a lot of the similar ways that we've talked about it, you know, maybe even a couple of years ago with some of the way that things shook out with Jackson Arnold and things like that, it's a matter and Dylan Gabriel.
- 18:25[SPEAKER_02]: It's a matter of, you know, when say an injury would happen, I think, or how long they would be out if it's a short-term thing.
- 18:33[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe you go with uh, you know, with new bower just to get you by because one he's got the experience Yes, your offense looks a little bit different as you alluded to being more of a true pocket guy But I think and if it happens early in the season, maybe it's more likely it's with new bower if it happens later You know, there's a good chance that it winds up being both Bentley or if it's a long-term thing and hey You're gonna burn this guy's wretched anyway
- 19:00[SPEAKER_02]: let's go ahead and roll the dice because this guy gives us the best chance to continue on with the same goals that we have already and with the offense that we have in place.
- 19:13[SPEAKER_02]: So I think Saturday is really important for both these guys, but in particular, Bentley, just to get a little bit more confident, get to have that experience in the stadium, what it feels like with the crowd,
- 19:27[SPEAKER_02]: speeding up that process to where he's ready earlier than maybe he otherwise would be.
- 19:34[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's also fascinating from a John material perspective to just seeing what kind of improvements he's made throughout the off season.
- 19:41[SPEAKER_00]: We talked a lot about obviously the physical toll of his injury, but also the mental toll that it probably took.
- 19:47[SPEAKER_00]: Here you see what strides he's made in his decision making, his footwork, his throwing the canics obviously.
- 19:54[SPEAKER_00]: The fan base, I mean,
- 19:55[SPEAKER_00]: at some point kind of turned on him last year and like you can see why just because the performance was inconsistent, John alluded to that.
- 20:03[SPEAKER_00]: It was a lot less efficient football after he suffered that injury, granted playing a lot better defensive like Texas Ole Miss, some of those opponents down the stretch, but he wasn't the same quarterback that we saw against Michigan in Auburn early in the season.
- 20:18[SPEAKER_00]: It is, I mean, there's no competition, material is going to be the
- 20:23[SPEAKER_00]: Stay as healthy, no unforeseen circumstances, but I think a lot of fans are going to be curious what does this guy look like now healthier one year under his belt in the system in the SEC.
- 20:34[SPEAKER_00]: So that's something I'm at least watching for too.
- 20:37[SPEAKER_01]: The spring game, again, kicks off at noon.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_01]: Guys, I'm on Sooner Sports right now, and I do not see any television designation.
- 20:44[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to presume that it's going to be run back at some
- 20:52[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I imagine so I haven't seen for sure any talk about that, but it would surprise me if there wasn't something on the SEC network on SEC network plus to recount that, but, you know, hopefully people, you know, have, well,
- 21:13[SPEAKER_02]: I know, hopefully people will click the website, but also, you know, I know we'll have plenty to read about it on Si.com slash Oklahoma, because we'll cover every angle of the spring game for sure.
- 21:28[SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely.
- 21:29[SPEAKER_01]: And Carson, you're going to be on the field with a video camera, right?
- 21:32[SPEAKER_01]: So we'll have a video highlights.
- 21:33[SPEAKER_01]: We'll have all that good stuff.
- 21:35[SPEAKER_00]: I believe, I don't know if this is confirmed.
- 21:38[SPEAKER_00]: I believe Brady Trump will be on the end zone opposite of me too, shooting some highlights.
- 21:43[SPEAKER_00]: a lot of angles of stuff.
- 21:44[SPEAKER_00]: So make sure you're staying tuned to YouTube page too.
- 21:47[SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_01]: And that's what we'll have all the post game interviews and Brent Benables recaps and all that good stuff as well.
- 21:53[SPEAKER_01]: Um, let's switch it up.
- 21:55[SPEAKER_01]: Roger Danny, the new athletic director.
- 21:58[SPEAKER_01]: was in my neck of the woods yesterday.
- 21:59[SPEAKER_01]: Down here in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_01]: The OU Club of Tulsa has its annual spring, you know, get together.
- 22:06[SPEAKER_01]: And he came down, he came up, I should say, the turnpike, and he's probably like turnpike.
- 22:12[SPEAKER_01]: You guys have turnpikes though?
- 22:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, buddy, we got turnpikes in Oklahoma.
- 22:14[SPEAKER_01]: You better believe it.
- 22:16[SPEAKER_01]: what to be fair.
- 22:17[SPEAKER_02]: There's also a fair amount of turnpikes slash paid roads in in Illinois, especially around the Chicago area.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_02]: I know I've accidentally wound up on them and wound up in Gary, Indiana.
- 22:31[SPEAKER_01]: good call, good call, you're right.
- 22:34[SPEAKER_01]: I would think that somebody coming from another part of the country, though, when they get to Oklahoma, they're probably in their mind.
- 22:39[SPEAKER_01]: They think tumbleweeds and wide open spaces, and all that way.
- 22:43[SPEAKER_01]: Let's just turn pikes, though.
- 22:44[SPEAKER_01]: How come every highway is a turnpike here?
- 22:46[SPEAKER_01]: Well, how did that?
- 22:46[SPEAKER_01]: Oklahoma is so weird.
- 22:48[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, Kansas has some, you know, obviously, Texas is a North Texas, especially is replete with too many turnpikes.
- 22:56[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't know.
- 22:57[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody's got their hand out these days.
- 22:59[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, let's move on.
- 23:01[SPEAKER_01]: I got to meet Roger for the first time.
- 23:04[SPEAKER_01]: I was not able to attend his introductory press conference.
- 23:07[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, just being able to get some face time with the athletic director at OU was was good for me and several of the other media folks that were there.
- 23:16[SPEAKER_01]: It didn't really like break any huge news or reveal anything important.
- 23:26[SPEAKER_01]: I guess it's not huge, great news or anything, but, you know, jokes stickling on his done these OU Club of Tulsa type things before, but if you think about it, I think this event, the publicity that went out, you know, hey, here's Roger Denny's going to be here, interview time is here, you get some B-roll, shoot some B-roll, get some interviews.
- 23:45[SPEAKER_01]: The publicity that went out to promote this thing.
- 23:48[SPEAKER_01]: You couple that with the rebirth this year of the sooner caravan next month.
- 23:52[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's been sooner caravans been idle for three years now.
- 23:57[SPEAKER_01]: This would have been the fourth straight year.
- 23:59[SPEAKER_01]: that bring in the sooner care of end-back next month.
- 24:02[SPEAKER_01]: I think that shows that Roger Danny is very, very, very interested in using whatever resources he can to tap back into that river of cash that sooner fans can provide.
- 24:13[SPEAKER_01]: I'm talking about donations, right?
- 24:15[SPEAKER_01]: In this day and age, guys, he needs every dollar he can find, right, Abraham.
- 24:21[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, absolutely.
- 24:22[SPEAKER_02]: And, you know, I think that's something that's, you know, been missing a little bit.
- 24:27[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously, Joke Siglion knew exactly where to go for the money and had those relationships built up.
- 24:34[SPEAKER_02]: But when you don't have those relationships built up, you've got to find a way to build them up and in a, you know, sort of, uh,
- 24:42[SPEAKER_02]: broader way.
- 24:44[SPEAKER_02]: This isn't the directed like, I'm going to go talk to this big time donor, but hey, I'm going to go to Tulsa and speak to 200 people who might be, you know, turn into smaller donors and maybe there's, you know, a big donor to, in the audience as well and can get some one-on-one time with them.
- 25:02[SPEAKER_02]: So I think this is really important to, uh,
- 25:06[SPEAKER_02]: You know, get around the state meet some of these people who may not be your, you know, top line donors at Oklahoma, but can be the ones that help you build up that sort of the war chest.
- 25:21[SPEAKER_02]: to be able to compete in the way that Roger Denny wants to compete in the way that Oklahoma athletics wants to compete on a national scale and certainly within the confines of the SEC as you have to be very competitive in order to even hang in there much less competed at the top of sports like football, baseball, softball, both basketballs, things like that.
- 25:49[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody loves the BMDs, the big money donors, but you need the small money donors.
- 25:53[SPEAKER_01]: You need a stack up.
- 25:54[SPEAKER_01]: You need a foundation of small money donors.
- 25:55[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that's what he's kind of grass-rooting this effort right now.
- 25:59[SPEAKER_01]: Getting back into it, Carson.
- 26:02[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, you is in the early phases.
- 26:03[SPEAKER_01]: This is what I wrote about yesterday.
- 26:04[SPEAKER_01]: Talk after talking to ask and brought you any several questions.
- 26:08[SPEAKER_01]: They're in the early phases of renovating the West Side of the stadium.
- 26:11[SPEAKER_01]: This was Ryan's idea by the way, Ryan Chapman.
- 26:13[SPEAKER_01]: I said, asking about this, Roger told me that that's something that the early stages of the renovation.
- 26:21[SPEAKER_01]: He doesn't want to get too far out in front because he just got here, but he also said, he's got a few ideas for some changes.
- 26:26[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I've seen it.
- 26:27[SPEAKER_01]: He said, whether that's actual blue prints or the amenities, or is he called it the phasing of the project, meaning breaking it down into phases that are centered around how effective
- 26:40[SPEAKER_01]: particular fundraising might be for that particular face.
- 26:44[SPEAKER_01]: He seems kind of eager to get on it.
- 26:47[SPEAKER_01]: One quote that I wanted to run by you and let you kind of rumenate on this.
- 26:50[SPEAKER_01]: He said, I don't have the hubris.
- 26:53[SPEAKER_01]: I don't have the hubris to come in and look and see something and say, and I was standing all the time that went into it and thought that went into it.
- 27:00[SPEAKER_01]: I think I have a better idea.
- 27:02[SPEAKER_01]: He said, I like a lot of it.
- 27:04[SPEAKER_01]: I do think there's room for improvement on the edges, but I'm not going to change anything until I really understand why it is where it is and he said we're not at that point yet.
- 27:12[SPEAKER_01]: What'd you think about that, Carson?
- 27:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think it just kind of goes back to what we thought when he was introduced that he is this very well-spoken relational guy that does listen, that's something I've heard a lot of from people with concerns regarding the basketball programs, the baseball program,
- 27:29[SPEAKER_00]: football stadium renovations.
- 27:31[SPEAKER_00]: I mean when those renderings were released, the details were released.
- 27:34[SPEAKER_00]: There was a lot of negative pushback from this fan base about why is this happening, why is that happening?
- 27:40[SPEAKER_00]: Early on it seems like Roger Dini is very aware of some of those concerns.
- 27:46[SPEAKER_00]: Doesn't want to just kind of throw everything in the trash from
- 27:50[SPEAKER_00]: those renderings because I mean like he said he thinks a lot of that is good and he doesn't want to undercut anybody else's work but it does seem valuable that he's listening to one side and listening to the other trying to find some middle ground see what can be the best thing because I mean he is experience with this with stadium building with other developments too when he was at a lot firm in St. Louis working with them so he has a background in this obviously Illinois
- 28:18[SPEAKER_00]: did multiple projects remodeling stadiums while he was in that program.
- 28:23[SPEAKER_00]: That football program was nothing when he joined their staff.
- 28:26[SPEAKER_00]: I wouldn't say they're a playoff contender and national title contender, but they're consistently good, big, tin team.
- 28:33[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of that is thanks to the work that he did to make them kind of relevant with their football experience.
- 28:39[SPEAKER_00]: So I think he knows how big of a thing it is, especially
- 28:42[SPEAKER_00]: program as storied as Oklahoma.
- 28:44[SPEAKER_00]: So just kind of being able to listen to a lot of people be relational, like I said, I think that is going to be huge as OU goes undergoes this huge project.
- 28:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, OU fans are mad about obviously the loss of seats down to 7,000 to like 73,000.
- 29:03[SPEAKER_01]: And they're also mad about having to get, I guess, get replaced.
- 29:07[SPEAKER_01]: They've had these seats in this section forever.
- 29:10[SPEAKER_01]: our generations and now it's where they're getting emails saying you've got to re-up here's the price or you're out.
- 29:16[SPEAKER_01]: They're not liking that.
- 29:17[SPEAKER_01]: So real quick Roger Denny talked about several other topics.
- 29:20[SPEAKER_01]: What we'll do is we'll trickle those gap to you guys and as readers starting next week when things slow down a little bit.
- 29:27[SPEAKER_01]: If you want to see the full interview with Roger
- 29:29[SPEAKER_01]: I was in the very front row, I was the first one in the room, and I got the best seat, and I've got the whole YouTube video posted on my YouTube channel, John Hoover Media.
- 29:37[SPEAKER_01]: You can also find it on our website, OklahomaSoonersonSide.com.
- 29:40[SPEAKER_01]: Just click on the story I wrote yesterday about the stadium renovation.
- 29:44[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you get on their scroll down, click on football if you want to scroll down.
- 29:47[SPEAKER_01]: You will find the full interview right there.
- 29:50[SPEAKER_01]: Let's talk some basketball fellas.
- 29:52[SPEAKER_01]: Alright, so the transfer portal guys is open and portal motors are ported.
- 29:56[SPEAKER_01]: port of mosa i knew i was going to do it is port of mosa in the uh his history over the last few years at Oklahoma these are in that nickname i know he hates it but he's earned it uh and it's out of necessity i know but uh now port of squad has landed a couple of big ones this week Carson one newcomer and one old not old guy but uh a familiar name
- 30:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they definitely have with six foot 10 forward Connie Ruth's from Louisville, that's the newcomer.
- 30:26[SPEAKER_00]: He is someone that didn't have a huge roll, but average 5.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, I believe it was definitely just gives, oh, use some more size, which as I've mentioned, that's been a big area of need with Moa Yee leaving, Carole Latanse leaving, Darion Reed, we have her whether he's staying or going.
- 30:45[SPEAKER_00]: Um, but it's big to get another guy to compliment Kai Rogers who at least showed flashes at times throughout his true freshman season.
- 30:54[SPEAKER_00]: Um, so getting him back should be another good get, uh, able-deluded to it.
- 30:58[SPEAKER_00]: But this team has been so portal heavy, which is kind of a necessity in the modern state college basketball.
- 31:04[SPEAKER_00]: But getting someone with a decent field goal percentage, I believe it was 45% not amazing, but, um, definitely improved from his freshman season.
- 31:15[SPEAKER_00]: But I think the bigger news is getting Xavier Brown back.
- 31:19[SPEAKER_00]: He was really good that one-two punch of Nigel Pack and Xavier Brown.
- 31:23[SPEAKER_00]: He was really strong, really came in in conference play, suffered an injury earlier in the year and once he came back from that, he was...
- 31:31[SPEAKER_00]: He was second most valuable player, only two pack on this team and it's not all that surprising that he's deciding to stay considering his stepfather just in Scott is an assistant for this program, so what would have been at least a little bit surprising if you chose to depart, but he certainly had the options after the year that he had in 2025, 26 really good three point shooter averaged about 17 points per game, so maybe let's just say that's huge.
- 31:58[SPEAKER_00]: I alluded to this a minute ago, but the next big thing to watch is Daryon Reed.
- 32:02[SPEAKER_00]: If they can get him to resign for the next season, that will be huge, and then having a guy like Dayton Forsyth off the bench, you'll start to look at this team, they're obviously going to add one or two maybe three more transfers because there are a lot of spots on this roster open, but if you can retain Reed,
- 32:21[SPEAKER_00]: Pair and a guy like Ruth's obviously brown coming back.
- 32:25[SPEAKER_00]: You're looking at a pretty strong core for this team next year and kind of does more than just a lip service to we're gonna resource the basketball program more.
- 32:34[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Xavier Brown, 15.4 points per game shot 34% from 3, 3.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists per game, lead the team to assist.
- 32:45[SPEAKER_01]: Really, really, that's one of those in Porter's time.
- 32:49[SPEAKER_01]: If he could have had one or two more guys like that, come back the second year or come back for another year.
- 32:56[SPEAKER_01]: I think you have this thing rolling a little better, but as it's been, it's been, get four new guys, they all leave.
- 33:02[SPEAKER_01]: Four new guys come in, they all leave.
- 33:04[SPEAKER_01]: And just being able to bring one back one time, maybe helps establish, you know, year one, year two, year three, all he talked about was culture, culture, culture.
- 33:12[SPEAKER_01]: We got to build the culture before we can do anything else.
- 33:15[SPEAKER_01]: The culture, the culture became,
- 33:17[SPEAKER_01]: transfer portal, transfer portal, transfer portal.
- 33:19[SPEAKER_01]: And nobody wants to live that way, but that's the way college basketball lives nowadays, including Ryan Avers, some of the women's teams are doing that.
- 33:26[SPEAKER_01]: Jenny Baracic got some huge news out of the portal this week as she brought in in my estimation, a couple of proven playmakers.
- 33:33[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and, you know, a couple of it from the state or coming from playing in the state of Kansas one Missouri product one Norman product but got to start with the Norman product kicked off their portal editions and adding keyly parks is big especially after you lose a Zion van into the portal and you sort of understand why Zion van would enter the portal.
- 34:02[SPEAKER_02]: because she proved last year at times that she can command an offense and be the focal point.
- 34:10[SPEAKER_02]: The problem is she's never going to be the focal point at Oklahoma with a Lea Chavez next to her at guard, so you bring in a player like Keely Parks who can be
- 34:19[SPEAKER_02]: You know, okay, be in that number two option at guard parks five-eleven guard from Kansas.
- 34:26[SPEAKER_02]: Did some good things You know last year when she was healthy was banged up a little bit But I think she's one that has a chance to Really really grow as a player once she's able to you know establish health and also to play in a system like Jenny baron chicks with players like Leah Chavez and
- 34:49[SPEAKER_02]: The other player that they've added this week, which is Jordan Spicer, another former McDonald's all-American, it seems like Jenny Buronchek is just collecting these, like Pokemon cards, they're everywhere on this team, when you look at Sahara Williams, who's back, going to be the lone senior on next year's team as of now, but this is a really young team, because you get a Lea Chavez.
- 35:16[SPEAKER_02]: a former McDonald's all-American, you had Brooklyn Stewart and Kaziah Lofton who you would figure their roles are going to grow significantly next season after playing, you know, key roles off the bench as freshman and then you add in Keely Parks who we've talked about and then Jordan Spicer who's, you know, Jordan's, you know,
- 35:39[SPEAKER_02]: offensive production, particularly from deep, really took off late in the year.
- 35:44[SPEAKER_02]: She added two best offensive games in the big 12 tournament.
- 35:48[SPEAKER_02]: As Kansas State made a remarkable run from being, I believe, was at the 12 or 13 seed all the way into the semi finals.
- 35:57[SPEAKER_02]: for them where they lost to TCU, no shame in that, and Jordan Spicer really, a really dynamic player who you see her as a 6-1 guard, the ability to shift in to Jenny Baronchic system.
- 36:14[SPEAKER_02]: I think she will be excellent, getting up and down the floor, finding open three pointers, and also opening things up toward the lane for players like Alicia Chavez.
- 36:30[SPEAKER_02]: I think you're moving it, muted hoof.
- 36:32[SPEAKER_02]: Got to get you off the mute.
- 36:34[SPEAKER_01]: I am unmuted now.
- 36:36[SPEAKER_01]: Appreciate you guys digging into the basketball for us.
- 36:39[SPEAKER_01]: That's good stuff on the newcomers and the retention of Xavier Brown for sure.
- 36:43[SPEAKER_01]: Let's switch it up to the Diamond Sports.
- 36:45[SPEAKER_01]: I was just looking over on the no new updates in terms of the weather, OU versus OSU tonight at Devon Park in Oklahoma City.
- 36:57[SPEAKER_01]: Whole fan stadium, we all know.
- 36:59[SPEAKER_01]: This is a softball team Ryan.
- 37:03[SPEAKER_01]: maybe it's not 9-1-1 but they're coming off a loss.
- 37:06[SPEAKER_01]: They're coming off of a loss after another long winning streak 7 games, lose to Texas.
- 37:13[SPEAKER_01]: They won the series.
- 37:15[SPEAKER_01]: And the rank number one this year, this week, Oklahoma sooner's softball, Patty Gasseau, and the machine that she has built.
- 37:22[SPEAKER_01]: But they go to Texas, go to Texas, go to Texas, 3-0 victory, 4-3 victory clutch, and then they had victory for a sweep in their claws, and it slipped away with an eighth inning pair of home runs.
- 37:38[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 37:39[SPEAKER_01]: I know Texas is really good.
- 37:40[SPEAKER_01]: They're the defending national champ and they've been the team that is ranked.
- 37:43[SPEAKER_01]: I think longer than anybody else this year has been ranked number one.
- 37:46[SPEAKER_01]: I think they're really good
- 37:49[SPEAKER_01]: And Oklahoma was this close to sweeping them in Austin, Texas, holy cow, what a performance by the sooners.
- 37:55[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, no doubt, and as Ryan Chapman and I talked about in the saltball podcast Monday, and you know, check that out if you're a saltball fan, because we break down everything about the previous weekend and look toward the next weekend.
- 38:11[SPEAKER_02]: We talked about game three being
- 38:14[SPEAKER_02]: You know, yes, it's disappointing to lose certainly disappointing to have that game sort of in your grasp and then let it go, but the growth I think that can come from that game because Patty gaso sort of, you know, played like she had, you know, money in her back pocket with the pitching staff, the way she worked the rotations got a list of Parker and Berkeley's a K experience in a game like that, which I think is invaluable.
- 38:43[SPEAKER_02]: I talked to Ella Parker about how much that series two years ago in Austin helped her grow as a player and as a hitter and I think that can be the same thing for Alyssa Parker, Alyssa Parker.
- 38:58[SPEAKER_02]: and Berkeley's decay in the circle.
- 39:01[SPEAKER_02]: And you're able to get those just weighty moments, you know, get your experience in those and really be able to take those into the postseason.
- 39:11[SPEAKER_02]: So I think a big time performance
- 39:14[SPEAKER_02]: from from the Sooners.
- 39:16[SPEAKER_02]: Kind of wells keeps doing what kind of wells is doing.
- 39:18[SPEAKER_02]: I thought her ability to adjust and also take advantage of the one bad pitch that was made to her and set the NCAA freshman home run record was big.
- 39:31[SPEAKER_02]: But another big weekend coming up here as Oklahoma turns to Bedlam tonight.
- 39:38[SPEAKER_02]: And that series always a big, even though it's only one game at Devin Park.
- 39:43[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's bigger for Oklahoma State than it is for Oklahoma.
- 39:46[SPEAKER_02]: I think Patty Gasseau could use this much like she used Sunday's game to get some of those pitchers experience in Devin Park and not just the freshman, but also pitchers like
- 40:01[SPEAKER_02]: who haven't had that experience.
- 40:03[SPEAKER_02]: I know my little chanel obviously was on the Ole Miss team last year got a little bit of experience, but it's a little bit different when you're in the crimson and cream at Devon Park.
- 40:13[SPEAKER_02]: So it'll be fascinating to see how she does it tonight in that one and then looking forward to the series against Arkansas where we know the razor backs are dangerous and obviously a
- 40:29[SPEAKER_02]: Who've you and I were there last year over in Fayetteville for that series and will be a fascinating to see the other side of it as DJ gas so comes back home to Norman in the the opposing dugout.
- 40:44[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, number six ranked Arkansas.
- 40:46[SPEAKER_01]: So you're looking at number one, Oklahoma, number six Arkansas, the SEC showed down in Norman this weekend.
- 40:53[SPEAKER_01]: Switch it up to baseball guys, Carson, Roger Denny's appearance with the OU Club of Tulsa last night.
- 41:02[SPEAKER_01]: was coordinated with the Bedlam baseball game at one oak field.
- 41:05[SPEAKER_01]: And if you've never been to one oak field car, so I would highly suggest that one of these days come on up here.
- 41:09[SPEAKER_01]: It is a beautiful little double A stadium.
- 41:12[SPEAKER_01]: Fantastic little setup.
- 41:14[SPEAKER_01]: Great views of the downtown area.
- 41:16[SPEAKER_01]: But things didn't go well for Roger Denny Sooner's Carson, a 7-3 loss to Oklahoma State, Bedlam defeat.
- 41:24[SPEAKER_01]: They've already beat him once this year, 10-1, but they fell behind early after a couple of home runs in the first inning and never really caught up.
- 41:32[SPEAKER_01]: Here's why I know, Carson.
- 41:34[SPEAKER_01]: The sooners are now 6 and 3 in midweek games.
- 41:37[SPEAKER_01]: The same winning percentage is the season 24 and 12 I think is the record.
- 41:41[SPEAKER_01]: 6 and 3 is better than what they've been in midweek games in recent years and I think that includes a two game sweep of midweek powerhouse juggernaut Dallas Baptist so there's that.
- 41:52[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure skip right now is glad to see the improvements but I'd also bet that you know skip likes to think
- 41:59[SPEAKER_01]: that this program can be a competing for SEC championships and making regular trips to the college world series.
- 42:06[SPEAKER_01]: I bet, and too, that he would like to see more consistent product in those midweek games, Carson.
- 42:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I tend to agree with that, granted.
- 42:13[SPEAKER_00]: I think midweek games, and this has been evidenced by some of the selections, the seedings over the years, definitely taken into account less than conference series, series against other major programs early in the season.
- 42:26[SPEAKER_00]: So I mean,
- 42:27[SPEAKER_00]: It definitely doesn't not matter, but it's not as valuable as, say, SEC play is.
- 42:34[SPEAKER_00]: Regardless, you want to win battle, battle them.
- 42:36[SPEAKER_00]: That is one of your rivals that you don't get to play in conference anymore, discouraging that they weren't able to generate the same magic that they had in the first week of the season down in Arlington.
- 42:46[SPEAKER_00]: But it is one of those things.
- 42:48[SPEAKER_00]: The pitching's not the same in midweek games.
- 42:50[SPEAKER_00]: It's typically your fourth best pitcher.
- 42:51[SPEAKER_00]: So there is a
- 42:53[SPEAKER_00]: a certain level of weirdness you saw that with the loss to South Eastern Louisiana a couple weeks ago.
- 42:58[SPEAKER_00]: You've seen that from just about every major program this year.
- 43:01[SPEAKER_00]: You see the number one team they lost to granted a good Santa Barbara team.
- 43:06[SPEAKER_00]: But still that is the number one team that I believe was on like a 29 game.
- 43:10[SPEAKER_00]: Something ridiculous along winning streak.
- 43:13[SPEAKER_00]: It happens.
- 43:14[SPEAKER_00]: It's weirdness.
- 43:18[SPEAKER_00]: The biggest concern I have with this team is the days that the bats are good, the pitching is not.
- 43:23[SPEAKER_00]: The day is that the pitching is good, the bats not.
- 43:26[SPEAKER_00]: This team though they found a way to win two games on the road in Nashville, which after the first inning on Friday, it did not look like that would happen.
- 43:34[SPEAKER_00]: It looked like they might be headed toward a sweep.
- 43:37[SPEAKER_00]: Instead they win the last two games of that series, pretty remarkable, all things considered
- 43:47[SPEAKER_00]: Um, in the Saturday game, the game three, um, so even though Vanderbilt's not what they usually are still very impressive to win that on the road.
- 43:56[SPEAKER_00]: Um, kind of stay in the mix for hosting their currently, I believe, type for 10th or 11th.
- 44:02[SPEAKER_00]: in the SEC standings.
- 44:04[SPEAKER_00]: But that's, that's not really a slia on the sooners.
- 44:07[SPEAKER_00]: This conference is that good.
- 44:08[SPEAKER_00]: We've talked about that.
- 44:09[SPEAKER_00]: This conference could have 7-8 regional hosts.
- 44:13[SPEAKER_00]: And oh, you, after winning against Vanderbilt, when it looked like they wouldn't.
- 44:17[SPEAKER_00]: Still in a good position to host, but you have to take care of business against Missouri.
- 44:20[SPEAKER_00]: This is not very good Missouri team.
- 44:23[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it's like they were maybe heading in the right direction.
- 44:25[SPEAKER_00]: Want to see these against Kentucky.
- 44:27[SPEAKER_00]: Then they get swept at home by South Carolina.
- 44:29[SPEAKER_00]: That's without a coach.
- 44:31[SPEAKER_00]: Really, this should be a three a three-o sweep for the sooners.
- 44:35[SPEAKER_00]: If it's not, that definitely takes a hit on a use resume relative to other teams that are really starting to play either best baseball, whether that is Texas A&M, Florida, Ole Miss, a lot of these teams that looked like they might not have it this year.
