- 0:15Each episode is crafted to inspire, to strengthen,
- 0:18and to guide you on your walk with God. And now,
- 0:22to lead us through today's journey, here is your
- 0:27host, Pastor David. Welcome to the Voices of
- 0:33Life Did You Know series. I'm Pastor David. Today
- 0:37we step into October 1st, a date overflowing
- 0:40with moments that shape nations deep in faith
- 0:43and reveal God's hand in the human story. From
- 0:49the birth of a president to the founding of a
- 0:51national treasure to the struggles and triumphs
- 0:54of the church, October 1st reminds us that every
- 0:58generation faces defining choices. Let's walk
- 1:02through them together. So did you know that on
- 1:06October 1st, 1890, Congress established Yosemite
- 1:10National Park, a sanctuary of granite cliffs,
- 1:14waterfalls, and ancient sequoias became protected
- 1:19for the generations to come. It's a reminder
- 1:23that God's creation is not just scenery. It's
- 1:26stewardship. A call to preserve beauty we did
- 1:30not create, but are entrusted to protect. On
- 1:37October 1st, 1903, the Pittsburgh Pirates and
- 1:40the Boston Americans met for the first game of
- 1:43what we now call the World Series. The Pirates
- 1:46won 7 -3, launching a tradition that would become
- 1:50woven into American culture. Competition, teamwork,
- 1:54perseverance, all reflections of the discipline
- 1:58Scripture encouraged us to cultivate. On October
- 2:031st, 1924, James Earl Jimmy Carter was born in
- 2:09Plains, Georgia. Long before he became the 39th
- 2:13president, Carter was known for his Southern
- 2:16Baptist faith, teaching Sunday school even during
- 2:20his political career. His life reminds us that
- 2:23public service and Christian conviction can walk
- 2:26hand in hand when humility leads the way. After
- 2:33the horrors of World War II, the world sought
- 2:36justice. On this day in 1946, the International
- 2:41Military Tribunal announced sentences for leading
- 2:45Nazi officials, 12 condemned to death. The Nuremberg
- 2:50Trials established principles that still guide
- 2:53international law. Truth matters, justice matters,
- 2:57accountability matters, and scripture teaches
- 3:01that righteousness exalts a nation. Just to clarify,
- 3:06The Nuremberg Trials and the international law
- 3:09have absolutely nothing to do with the ICC, the
- 3:14International Criminal Court. That was a separate
- 3:16organization set up in 2003, and there's only
- 3:22a few nations that actually subscribe to it.
- 3:24So these are two very different things. When
- 3:26you have a world war, the world wants justice.
- 3:29When you have a couple issues, particularly,
- 3:33that's where the ICC gets involved. The United
- 3:36States is not a member of the ICC and does not
- 3:40recognize their authority. So, moving on to 1949.
- 3:47In 1949, Mao Zedong proclaimed the People's Republic
- 3:51of China, reshaping global politics and setting
- 3:56the stage for decades of Cold War tension. For
- 3:59the United States, this moment became a defining
- 4:02challenge in its foreign policy. A reminder that
- 4:05nations rise and fall, but God's sovereignty
- 4:08remains unchanged. Before and during World War
- 4:12II, we were the allies of China. And we fought
- 4:17for them. We helped repel the Japanese away from
- 4:20them. When this change was made in 1949, it totally
- 4:24did a 180 on the politics. And they more aligned
- 4:30with Russia. And that created more of the Cold
- 4:34War tensions for the United States. But you know,
- 4:38governments are around a certain amount of time,
- 4:40especially if they're socialist or communist,
- 4:43they do not last forever. They can't. Moving
- 4:46on, I'm going to take a look back into history.
- 4:50In 1529, the Marburg Colloquy begins. So Martin
- 4:58Luther, Urick, Zingley, and other Reformers gathered
- 5:03in Marburg hoping to unify Protestants everywhere.
- 5:08They agreed on 14 of 15 theological articles,
- 5:12but could not reconcile their views on the Eucharist.
- 5:18It is a powerful lesson because even among sincere
- 5:22believers, unity requires humility and sometimes
- 5:26patience across generations. In 1553, Mary I
- 5:32was crowned Queen of England. And this happened
- 5:36at Westminster Abbey. Her reign intensified the
- 5:39conflict between the Catholics and the Protestants
- 5:42during the English Reformation. History reminds
- 5:45us that faith and power often collide. But Christ
- 5:50calls his church to pursue truth without persecution,
- 5:54conviction without cruelty, and love without
- 5:57compromise. And here's one of my favorites. Moving
- 6:02up to 1979, Pope John Paul II arrives in the
- 6:07United States. He began his first historic visit
- 6:11starting in Boston to Washington, from Chicago
- 6:15to Philadelphia. His message was simple, yet
- 6:19profound. Human dignity is sacred. Freedom must
- 6:24be anchored in moral truth, and every person
- 6:27is called to holiness. And I can't remember if
- 6:32it was his first visit or he came another time,
- 6:35but he was down here in Miami in South Florida.
- 6:38I remember him going down Biscayne Boulevard,
- 6:40and it was just amazing to see him. I mean, I'm
- 6:43not Catholic, but he was a man that tried to
- 6:46work out conflicts between nations. He was a
- 6:49man of peace, a man of distinction, and his words
- 6:54always encouraged you. So I found Pope John Paul
- 6:58II to be one of the best popes. in modern history.
- 7:02October 1st shows us that history is never just
- 7:06dates and not events. It's people. It's choices,
- 7:10convictions, and consequences. And boy, sometimes
- 7:12there can be a lot of consequences. But from
- 7:15Yosemite's beauty and its birth as a national
- 7:18treasure, to the World Series legacy, to Carter's
- 7:23faith, to the pursuit of justice at Nuremberg,
- 7:26to the struggles of Reformation. to the voice
- 7:30of a modern pope. Each moment whispers the same
- 7:33truth. God is at work in every generation. Thank
- 7:37you for joining me today on Voices of Life, Did
- 7:40You Know?, a ministry of the Church for Life.
