- 0:00Speaker 1: Why is it that psychedelic use has played the role
- 0:03Speaker 1: that it's played in your interests, in your pursuit of knowledge.
- 0:07Speaker 1: What do you think it's done for you that's been valuable.
- 0:12Speaker 1: I think we're in a weird place in society where
- 0:17Speaker 1: the term drug is a is a blanket and it
- 0:21Speaker 1: covers things that have vastly different effects. It covers caffeine,
- 0:27Speaker 1: it covers nicotine, and it covers dimethyl trip to meine,
- 0:31Speaker 1: which is crazy. It's crazy that all those things are drugs.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Adderall is a drug. Benzodiazepine is a drug, xanax. There's
- 0:41Speaker 1: a million of them. They're all different, and they're all drugs.
- 0:45Speaker 1: And the idea that psychedelics are a drug, for lack
- 0:50Speaker 1: of a better term, that's what we use. I don't
- 0:53Speaker 1: think that's what they are at all. I think they
- 0:56Speaker 1: are probably why we became people. I think they are
- 1:00Speaker 1: probably why society advanced, and I think every great ancient
- 1:06Speaker 1: culture probably celebrated them and used them. It seems like
- 1:11Speaker 1: there's so much evidence out of Egypt of the use
- 1:14Speaker 1: of psilocybin, various different drugs, various different psychedelic experiences. The
- 1:23Speaker 1: iconography of the pineal gland seems to be a big
- 1:27Speaker 1: part of multiple cultures, not just Egyptian, but even Catholicism.
- 1:33Speaker 1: If you go to the Vatican, there's this enormous pine
- 1:37Speaker 1: cone that is a statue there. And I was very
- 1:41Speaker 1: lucky when I went to the Vatican. We got a guide.
- 1:43Speaker 1: We hired a private guide that was a scholar from France,
- 1:47Speaker 1: and when he's not working in the summers, he gives
- 1:50Speaker 1: these tours and they're very thorough and he was brilliant guy.
- 1:55Speaker 1: I wish I could remember his name. I should probably
- 1:57Speaker 1: find it out to give him credit. Brilliant guy. He
- 2:00Speaker 1: takes us through showing us all this artwork, it's incredible,
- 2:03Speaker 1: explaining why they had little penises, and that it was
- 2:06Speaker 1: explaining the whole thing that big penises were thought to
- 2:09Speaker 1: be barbaric and it was not representative of like somewhat
- 2:13Speaker 1: of class and dignity and education. And so we get
- 2:15Speaker 1: to this pine cone and he says to me, he goes,
- 2:19Speaker 1: do you know what this represents? And I said, is
- 2:22Speaker 1: it the pineal gland? And he goes, yes. And then
- 2:26Speaker 1: we start this conversation of what, why, why these Catholics
- 2:30Speaker 1: would have this enormous representation of the pineal gland, which
- 2:35Speaker 1: they reference as the seed of the soul, and that
- 2:38Speaker 1: this gland, which is in the center of your brain
- 2:42Speaker 1: is thought to be literally a third eye, and on
- 2:46Speaker 1: reptiles it actually has a cornea and a lens. This
- 2:50Speaker 1: gland like literally it's exactly where the third eye of
- 2:54Speaker 1: Eastern mysticism is, and they've got a representation of it
- 2:57Speaker 1: right here. And it's thought to be where diamond trip
- 3:00Speaker 1: to Meet is produced. And this whole connection to it
- 3:06Speaker 1: is so old that it seems like you go back
- 3:11Speaker 1: to the John Marcro Allegro stuff, you go back to
- 3:14Speaker 1: the Dead Sea Scrolls, which are the oldest version of
- 3:16Speaker 1: the Bible, the only version that I believe, the only
- 3:19Speaker 1: version they've have in Aramaic, of all those stories. And
- 3:23Speaker 1: if he's right, if John Marco Allegro is right, it
- 3:26Speaker 1: all kind of makes sense that these people were having
- 3:30Speaker 1: these experiences, much like the Greeks where with the Elusinian mysteries,
- 3:36Speaker 1: much like multiple different cultures in the Amazon all over
- 3:41Speaker 1: the world have experienced these profound ceremony experiences that lead
- 3:48Speaker 1: to these journeys into the spirit world, these connections with
- 3:51Speaker 1: higher consciousness. This something that when you're experiencing it seems
- 3:56Speaker 1: very very real, but also very preposterous when you try
- 4:00Speaker 1: to explain it to people that aren't experienced, you know,
- 4:03Speaker 1: it's like Hendrix, like, are you experienced? Have you ever
- 4:06Speaker 1: been experienced? Well? I have? Like it's that like with
- 4:10Speaker 1: that understanding that that's possible, the world changes because now
- 4:16Speaker 1: you know that that's possible. You could live your whole
- 4:18Speaker 1: life and not know that the most shocking profound thing
- 4:25Speaker 1: in existence is three hits away, three hits away, and
- 4:29Speaker 1: all of a sudden you're in a completely different universe
- 4:32Speaker 1: in twenty thirty seconds. That's nuts. And the fact that
- 4:37Speaker 1: that is dismissed that people look at it as like, oh,
- 4:43Speaker 1: you're just escaping reality, and you're like. It might be
- 4:48Speaker 1: the source of civilization itself. It might be the source
- 4:52Speaker 1: of language. It might be the source of the expansion
- 4:55Speaker 1: of the human mind over a period of two million years,
- 4:58Speaker 1: The doubling of the human and brain over a period
- 5:01Speaker 1: of two million years, which Terrence McKenna felt directly coincides
- 5:05Speaker 1: with the shifting of the tropical rainforest turning into grasslands,
- 5:10Speaker 1: which would force these primates to experiment with new food sources,
- 5:14Speaker 1: and these undulate cows that were everywhere. That would then
- 5:17Speaker 1: these psilocybin mushrooms would grow. And there's observed primates flipping
- 5:23Speaker 1: over these cow patties looking for beetles and grubs and
- 5:26Speaker 1: things to eat. It's everywhere, like you could see it
- 5:28Speaker 1: all over Africa. If there's something on that they're going
- 5:31Speaker 1: to try it out. And if these things are trying
- 5:33Speaker 1: it out, and they're doing this over a period of
- 5:36Speaker 1: two million years, and they develop language and culture and weapons,
- 5:39Speaker 1: and they start thinking about things and they become different
- 5:42Speaker 1: than every animal around them. And this was McKenna's stone
- 5:46Speaker 1: dape theory, which I'm sure you're familiar with, and Dennis McKenna,
- 5:49Speaker 1: who is a legitimate scientist. Dennis explains it even better
- 5:55Speaker 1: because he explains it with the actual mechanisms that your brain,
- 6:00Speaker 1: that the things that fire up when you encounter high
- 6:02Speaker 1: dose psilocybin experiences that would lead you to the development
- 6:05Speaker 1: of language, gloss aallia, the connection of sounds and objects
- 6:11Speaker 1: and bringing things together in a manner of communication. Also,
- 6:15Speaker 1: they realized that in low doses it increases visual acuity,
- 6:20Speaker 1: It makes people more amorous, makes people hornier, They're gonna
- 6:23Speaker 1: have more sex they're gonna be better hunters because they
- 6:26Speaker 1: could see better. They're gonna be a more sensitive to
- 6:29Speaker 1: the environment, They're gonna be more aware, edge detections, different,
- 6:33Speaker 1: There's like so many different things that happened that if
- 6:36Speaker 1: you're thinking about what made people people, it's a mystery.
- 6:40Speaker 1: We want to pretend that we understand things because of
- 6:43Speaker 1: the fossil record and this and that. Sure we kind
- 6:45Speaker 1: of understand, but every now and then we find a
- 6:47Speaker 1: new human that we didn't even know exist, like Dennis
- 6:49Speaker 1: Oven's what was that not even twenty years ago? I
- 6:52Speaker 1: don't think so. Now there's a whole other branch of
- 6:56Speaker 1: human beings that they weren't even aware of twenty years ago.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Whatever happened that took us from all the other primates
- 7:04Speaker 1: that are still here and made us this, it's pretty profound.
- 7:09Speaker 1: And I have a feeling that psychedelics were at least
- 7:13Speaker 1: involved in that process.
