- 0:00Ah yes, Queensland Police Service setting the standard
- 0:05somewhere, somewhere below sea level.
- 0:08Well, Jay Fallon here and thanks for listening.
- 0:11So we've got another day. Another day and another police
- 0:13officer has been charged, a senior Sergeant, this time a 45
- 0:18year old senior Sergeant allegedly allegedly stealing
- 0:23shop goods while off duty. Let's get into the story.
- 0:25Bring it up here for you because you know, obviously nothing says
- 0:30trusted public institution quite like your senior leadership.
- 0:34Senior leadership getting caught nicking items from the local
- 0:38store, from the Local 711. I, I don't know where it's from,
- 0:42but anyway. And of course, the QPS, they
- 0:44rushed out their favourite PR line in keeping with our
- 0:47commitment, keeping with our commitment to low standards.
- 0:51No, no. In keeping with their commitment
- 0:53to high standards of behaviour, transparency and accountability.
- 0:58Right, Because when I think high standards, I definitely think
- 1:02senior Sergeant charged with shoplifting.
- 1:06It's definitely right up there. If this is the standard, if this
- 1:09is the high standard, well, I'd hate to see the low one.
- 1:12Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:13OK. So apparently now shoplifting is
- 1:17a leadership development exercise, I'm assuming.
- 1:20I don't know. Let's break it down.
- 1:22Here's the story. A senior Sergeant, not a rookie,
- 1:26not a probationary constable, but someone who's supposed to
- 1:30model professionalism, allegedly walks into a store and decides
- 1:34to help himself to the merchandise of duty.
- 1:37Sure, because apparently this is something they put in all the
- 1:40statements lately. It's all you know.
- 1:42They're off duty at the time. He's caught drink driving, but
- 1:44he's off duty. I mean, thank goodness for small
- 1:46mercies, eh? Yeah.
- 1:47So off duty. Sure.
- 1:48Still a sworn officer. Sworn officer.
- 1:51OK Are still bound by the code of conduct.
- 1:54There's something, it might be something in the PPRA.
- 1:56I'm not sure. Is there something about not not
- 1:59stealing or is that just Criminal Code?
- 2:03Who knows, you know? So anyway, but they're still
- 2:05representing the badge. And yet here we are.
- 2:08It's almost, it's almost impressive at this point.
- 2:11QPS keep finding new ways to surprise us, not with
- 2:15excellence, but with creative forms of misconduct.
- 2:19This reminds me of that story. What was that one a couple of
- 2:21years ago where the officer was stealing from the social club at
- 2:24his station and then the other two numpties went and set up a
- 2:27little sting and a little surveillance system and caught
- 2:30him and then tried to charge him.
- 2:32This is right up there with that.
- 2:34Anyway, so let's look at the the QPS response.
- 2:36They're very obviously always transparent about their lack of
- 2:39standards. QPS proudly announces the
- 2:43officer has been stood down and they're committed to informing
- 2:46the public when serious allegations arise.
- 2:49And translation of this is obviously we know you don't
- 2:52trust us, so here's another reason not to trust us.
- 2:56They're always, they always emphasise that the allegations
- 3:00aren't proven. Thank goodness for that.
- 3:02They're not proven because hey, once they are proven, we barely
- 3:05hear a word about it, don't we? And fair enough, presumption of
- 3:09innocence obviously is very important and it matters,
- 3:12absolutely. Let's.
- 3:14But let's be honest, Let's be honest, every time they release
- 3:17one of these statements, public confidence doesn't just drop it
- 3:23freefalls like a brick of a high rise, crashes, plummets.
- 3:28Because people aren't stupid. As much as they want to treat us
- 3:32like we're stupid, people aren't stupid.
- 3:35We see the pattern, we see the culture, we see the revolving
- 3:38door of misconduct announcements.
- 3:42And everyone's asking, we're all asking the same question, you
- 3:46know, and the same question for the sport for years now.
- 3:50If, if this is what's happening off duty, then what's happening
- 3:53on duty? That's what everyone's asking.
- 3:55So it's the bigger issue that I, I think is it's not, it's not
- 4:00the crime as such, it's the culture, the culture behind it.
- 4:03This isn't just about one officer allegedly, allegedly
- 4:07stealing. It's about what it represents
- 4:10when it's about the low standards.
- 4:13This is why I believe we've had such a high number of police
- 4:17officers shooting civilians, Low standards, low standards in
- 4:20recruitment, low standards across the board, low standards
- 4:23in their culture. This, like I said, it's not
- 4:27about this one officer allegedly stealing.
- 4:30It's about what it represents. When senior officers, this is a
- 4:33senior Sergeant. When a senior officer, the ones
- 4:36who are meant to uphold standards, are charged with
- 4:40basic, very basic criminal offences, it sends a message
- 4:45that the culture is broken, the leadership is compromised, the
- 4:48institution is rotting from the inside, and the public knows
- 4:54that. We all know it.
- 4:54Every scandal chips away at trust.
- 4:57Every misconduct announcement erodes confidence.
- 5:00Every. We're committed to transparency,
- 5:03Announcement, press release, whatever sounds more like damage
- 5:06control than accountability. Real accountability.
- 5:09People start to wonder if senior officers, a senior Sergeant, if
- 5:13senior officers are doing this, what else is happening behind
- 5:16closed doors? How many incidents never make it
- 5:20to a press release? You know, I could tell you a
- 5:21couple of things, but I'll get into lots of trouble, so I
- 5:24won't. So, yeah.
- 5:25How many incidents never make it to a press release?
- 5:27How many officers are protected instead of prosecuted?
- 5:32How deep does the rot go? This is this is the issue.
- 5:36This is what people want to know, because once trust is
- 5:39gone, it doesn't come back easily.
- 5:46Here's the what I think, here's what the politicians hate about
- 5:52all these things. When police integrity collapses,
- 5:56when they have these quantum announcements, government
- 5:58integrity collapses as well. It collapses with it because the
- 6:03police service isn't just a it's not just a standalone
- 6:06organisation, it's an arm of the state.
- 6:09It's if this arm is diseased, the body is too.
- 6:13People, people don't separate the 2.
- 6:15They see misconduct in policing as misconduct in governance.
- 6:21And when senior officers are charged with crimes, it
- 6:25reinforces the public's suspicions that the system is
- 6:29corrupt, the oversight is weak, the leadership is incompetent,
- 6:34and the government is either unwilling, and I think it's
- 6:39probably more unwilling, unwilling or unable to fix it.
- 6:43And this is how confidence erodes, not in one big scandal,
- 6:47but in 1000, small ones. Let's just look at the last.
- 6:52What the last two months, police officers making a turn that they
- 6:57shouldn't have been making in their vehicle up in Cairns
- 7:00because they wanted to arrest someone who was on the side of
- 7:03the street. They strike a 71 year old female
- 7:07woman who was crossing the street as she was allowed to do
- 7:09and they killed her. What's what's happened with that
- 7:11story that police been charged? Has anything happened?
- 7:17Another story, they're chasing down a dangerous person running
- 7:20around the park. They try and hit him with the
- 7:22car, they're trying to disable him.
- 7:23They get out and start shooting, just shooting at the man in a
- 7:27built up built up area, houses everywhere, houses behind them,
- 7:32cars driving along. A a female who was standing at
- 7:36her front door in her own property was shot, was struck
- 7:39with a bullet fired from a police gun.
- 7:41Because they're just too busy reacting out of fear, I assume
- 7:47trying to hit the dude, trying to stop him from running away,
- 7:50and they've almost killed someone.
- 7:52Bullets were found in cars that were driving by at the time.
- 7:56What's happened with those police officers?
- 7:58You know, we, we've had all these other incidents, as I've
- 8:01said before, QPS, when something good happens, they are out there
- 8:05announcing it from the top of a skyscraper, telling everyone,
- 8:09look how good we are. Look at their conduct, the great
- 8:11conduct of their police officers.
- 8:13When things like this happen, it's very minimal, Minimal.
- 8:16I mean, it's transparency, minimal transparency, minimal
- 8:19information. This is the, this is the issue.
- 8:22This is why the confidence erodes.
- 8:25Like I said, it's not not in a big scandal, even though I
- 8:29think, you know, hitting a woman with your car and killing is
- 8:33fairly big. Shooting, spraying bullets
- 8:36everywhere and hitting, hitting us, a person who's standing at a
- 8:39front door, that's pretty big. But yeah, these aren't, they're
- 8:42just all these little small cuts.
- 8:45It's the senior Sergeant allegedly stealing shop goods.
- 8:50Just another small cut, another little little section that
- 8:53erodes public confidence. So let's here's the takeaway.
- 8:59Here's what I what I think. OK, a senior Sergeant allegedly
- 9:02stealing from a shop isn't just embarrassing, it's corrosive and
- 9:10embarrassing. It undermines public confidence.
- 9:12It damages the reputation of the Queensland Police Service, it
- 9:16reflects poorly on the government and it reinforces the
- 9:20growing belief that the system is broken.
- 9:24And if people believe the system is broken then they don't want
- 9:28to work within the system. This is the this is the issue
- 9:31the government, the growing issue that the government is
- 9:34facing. QPS can talk about high
- 9:37standards all they want, but we know from all the stories that
- 9:41we've seen over the last couple of years that high standards is
- 9:44not really a part of their recruitment process at the
- 9:47moment. It's all about money and
- 9:49lifestyle. That's their high standards,
- 9:51high money and great lifestyle. But until so until the actions
- 10:01meet their slogans, until the actions match their slogans, the
- 10:06public will keep rolling world's biggest eye roll, rolling our
- 10:11eyes, and stories like this will keep proving the point.
- 10:17As always, this is just my opinion.
- 10:20What would I know? I'm Jay Fallon.
- 10:22Thanks for listening. Get
