• 0:01
Speaker 1: On a cold winter morning in early twenty twenty five,
• 0:05
Speaker 1: mother of two Ashley Elkins disappeared after leaving her home
• 0:09
Speaker 1: in Warren, Michigan to run a few errands. Five days later,
• 0:14
Speaker 1: Ashley's car was found parked outside of an apartment complex
• 0:17
Speaker 1: in Roseville, a few miles from where her cell phone
• 0:20
Speaker 1: location last pinged. The search for Ashley would lead to
• 0:25
Speaker 1: a disturbing crime scene, to hours of unsettling surveillance footage,
• 0:31
Speaker 1: and eventually sifting through acres of landfill. As more and
• 0:38
Speaker 1: more evidence came to light, so did the truth. Hi there,
• 0:48
Speaker 1: I'm Kevin, and welcome to Just That Lounge. Today we're
• 0:52
Speaker 1: taking a look at a very recent case unraveling in Michigan.
• 0:56
Speaker 1: It's a heartbreaking and disturbing story of a young life
• 1:01
Speaker 1: cut short. Let's take a look. On the morning of
• 1:18
Speaker 1: January tewod twenty twenty five, thirty year old Ashley Elkins
• 1:23
Speaker 1: left her house in Warren, Michigan to run a few errands.
• 1:26
Speaker 1: The mother of two sons aged seven to ten, left
• 1:30
Speaker 1: her boys with her younger sister. She was not meant
• 1:32
Speaker 1: to be away from them for very long. Ashley drove
• 1:36
Speaker 1: her Silver Malibu to a seven eleven. At around eight
• 1:39
Speaker 1: am that morning, she was captured parking and entering the store.
• 1:43
Speaker 1: Throughout the morning, she exchanged sporadic messages with her mother, Monica.
• 1:48
Speaker 1: At just after nine o'clock, however, these messages abruptly ceased.
• 1:53
Speaker 1: Monica had a sixth sense that something was not right.
• 1:57
Speaker 1: At nine oh six, she texted her daughter about an
• 1:59
Speaker 1: upset dream she had the night before that her daughter's
• 2:02
Speaker 1: car had been stolen. The response she received unsettled her further.
• 2:08
Speaker 1: It read simply aw man. Such a strange response from
• 2:12
Speaker 1: her daughter, and after that silence, Monica Elkins tried to
• 2:20
Speaker 1: FaceTime her daughter, but she didn't answer. She drove to
• 2:24
Speaker 1: her house, but Ashley had already left. Hours later, another
• 2:28
Speaker 1: family member received a text from Ashley stating that she
• 2:32
Speaker 1: was heading to a specific beauty supply store. Shortly after,
• 2:35
Speaker 1: her phone was turned off and then later turned back on,
• 2:39
Speaker 1: though there was no further communication. Unable to reach her,
• 2:43
Speaker 1: the family did what they could to track her down.
• 2:46
Speaker 1: Ashley's sister Alexis tracked Ashley's phone using the find my
• 2:51
Speaker 1: iPhone app, which showed her last known location was at
• 2:54
Speaker 1: an apartment in the twenty nine hundred block of Pinehurst
• 2:57
Speaker 1: Street in Roseville, Michigan. The address was a familiar one.
• 3:02
Speaker 1: It was the home of Ashley's ex boyfriend, thirty two
• 3:05
Speaker 1: year old DeAndre Booker. Members of Ashley's family, including her mother, sister,
• 3:11
Speaker 1: and the father of her two boys, went out to
• 3:13
Speaker 1: the apartment to look around. Her car wasn't in the
• 3:17
Speaker 1: parking lot. There was no response at Deandre's door. Monica
• 3:27
Speaker 1: spoke with police that evening. She could only speculate as
• 3:30
Speaker 1: to why Ashley would be at Deandre's apartment that morning.
• 3:34
Speaker 1: They had broken up months earlier, and to her knowledge,
• 3:37
Speaker 1: they were no longer involved.
• 3:44
Speaker 2: I was relie because she had sometimes how well.
• 3:52
Speaker 1: The Elkins had reason to suspect DeAndre Booker had something
• 3:56
Speaker 1: to do with Ashley's disappearance. They had at one time
• 4:00
Speaker 1: accepted him as family. Ashley and DeAndre were together for
• 4:04
Speaker 1: approximately a year, during which time he met her relatives.
• 4:08
Speaker 1: They bonded over the holidays, and he regularly helped out
• 4:11
Speaker 1: with her boys. Though after their breakup the previous September,
• 4:16
Speaker 1: Ashley had consciously distanced herself from her ex. When he called,
• 4:20
Speaker 1: she did not answer. In the weeks before she went missing,
• 4:25
Speaker 1: Ashley told some family members that she believed DeAndre may
• 4:29
Speaker 1: have been following her. As soon as Ashley went missing,
• 4:33
Speaker 1: her family grew concerned that he may have abducted her.
• 4:37
Speaker 1: Just days before, DeAndre had attempted to trick Ashley into
• 4:40
Speaker 1: letting him into her house by making an appointment under
• 4:44
Speaker 1: a fake name with her hairstyling business, which she ran
• 4:47
  Speaker 1: from home.
• 4:50
Speaker 2: He came to the house. He act like he was
• 4:53
Speaker 2: a client, and he made a point where her she
• 4:56
Speaker 2: respected a client was him and they were in the
• 4:59
Speaker 2: house clish. She told to be quiet. He not on
• 5:01
Speaker 2: the front during the side. During that he left in
• 5:02
Speaker 2: the here is two days later, she's stolen.
• 5:07
Speaker 1: Five days after she went missing, Ashley's Silver Malibu was
• 5:11
Speaker 1: discovered in the parking lot of an apartment complex near
• 5:14
Speaker 1: to thirteen Mile in Little Mac in Roseville. This location
• 5:18
Speaker 1: is four miles from the complex where her ex boyfriend lived.
• 5:22
Speaker 1: The keys had been left on the seat.
• 5:25
Speaker 3: I'm big in my hid passed, not flass and I
• 5:27
Speaker 3: just got off work. I've been out here all weekend.
• 5:29
  Speaker 3: I am concerned, concerned. She's a good person. She's a
• 5:32
Speaker 3: mother too, I mean anything outside of that, that's the
• 5:35
Speaker 3: main focus right there. She has babies, so that's our
• 5:37
Speaker 3: focus as a family in aspect communities.
• 5:40
Speaker 4: She loves her family, her kids.
• 5:42
Speaker 1: She would never just disappear for this many days, investigators
• 5:50
Speaker 1: began to trace Ashley's movements from the morning of January
• 5:54
Speaker 1: twod A camera facing the parking lot of DeAndre Booker's
• 5:57
Speaker 1: apartment building on Pinehurst Street captured Ashley entering the lot
• 6:01
Speaker 1: that morning. She is shown wearing the same clothing she
• 6:05
Speaker 1: was wearing earlier at the seven to eleven an orange shirt,
• 6:09
Speaker 1: black jacket, and dark jeans. A few hours later, at
• 6:15
Speaker 1: just afternoon, two figures were captured moving towards Ashley's vehicle.
• 6:21
Speaker 1: The mail in dark jeans, a black coat and hat
• 6:24
Speaker 1: appeared to be DeAndre Booker. The woman investigators assumed must
• 6:30
Speaker 1: be Ashley, except she was wearing different clothing. The angle
• 6:35
Speaker 1: of the camera did not allow for an accurate identification.
• 6:39
Speaker 1: The couple got into the car. After a pause and
• 6:42
Speaker 1: brief exchange, the woman got into the driver's side. They
• 6:47
Speaker 1: took a left out of the complex. The car never returned.
• 7:00
Speaker 1: Days after Ashley went missing, DeAndre placed a call to
• 7:03
Speaker 1: Roseville Police telling them that he suspected his apartment had
• 7:07
Speaker 1: been broken into. He had not stayed there the night before,
• 7:11
Speaker 1: nor did he meet officers at his door. When they
• 7:13
Speaker 1: arrived to investigate. Officers reported that they found the door
• 7:18
Speaker 1: to the unit unlocked and sitting slightly ajar. For this reason,
• 7:22
Speaker 1: they let themselves inside as they made their way through
• 7:26
Speaker 1: the living room and down the hallway towards the bedrooms.
• 7:29
Speaker 1: In the bathroom, they noted a number of curious and
• 7:33
Speaker 1: unsettling signs, ones that indicated that the apartment had been
• 7:37
Speaker 1: the location of a brutal, likely deadly incident. The unit
• 7:42
Speaker 1: had been very recently cleaned, using a significant amount of bleach.
• 7:47
Speaker 1: The scent of cleaning products lingered in the air. On
• 7:50
Speaker 1: the sofa, a pair of yellow rubber gloves sat discarded
• 7:54
Speaker 1: on the cushion. A laptop in headphones sat out on
• 7:57
Speaker 1: the tabletop in plain view, d jesting the apartment had
• 8:01
Speaker 1: not in fact been burgled. It was in the bathroom
• 8:06
Speaker 1: where alarm bells went off, prompting officers to immediately seal
• 8:10
Speaker 1: off the scene and call for further support. Two bottles
• 8:14
Speaker 1: of bleach sat out, one on the counter next to
• 8:17
Speaker 1: the sink and a second on the floor next to
• 8:20
Speaker 1: the bathtub. The shower curtain was missing. The plug to
• 8:25
Speaker 1: the bath drain was in the middle of the tub.
• 8:28
Speaker 1: The drain itself appeared to have small items sitting just
• 8:32
Speaker 1: inside it. Using a pair of tweezers, the responding officer
• 8:36
Speaker 1: pulled the visible bits of debris from the drain. Remnants
• 8:40
Speaker 1: of a blood like substance had been caught on a
• 8:43
Speaker 1: few hairs. Also visible to the naked eye were small
• 8:49
Speaker 1: spatter stains on the tiles against the side of the bathtub,
• 8:52
Speaker 1: on the baseboards, the floor, and on the back of
• 8:56
Speaker 1: the bathroom door. The countertop surrounding the sink was most clean,
• 9:00
Speaker 1: but the cupboard doors below were not. From the bathroom,
• 9:05
Speaker 1: attention was drawn down the hallway, where spatter was noted
• 9:08
Speaker 1: on the closet door and the walls. In the kitchen,
• 9:13
Speaker 1: searchers found a box of heavy duty garbage bags. A
• 9:16
Speaker 1: few had been used. There was also a second set
• 9:19
Speaker 1: of lighter pink colored bags that seemed to be used
• 9:22
Speaker 1: throughout the rest of the unit. The waist bin in
• 9:26
Speaker 1: the kitchen was empty. A fresh heavy duty garbage bag
• 9:29
Speaker 1: was placed inside a mop showed the signs of an
• 9:32
Speaker 1: attempted clean up. Later, a forensic team applied a luminous
• 9:38
Speaker 1: solution to the walls and floors and revealed the extent
• 9:41
Speaker 1: of cleaning that had been undertaken in the bathroom and hallway.
• 9:46
Speaker 1: A plumber was then called in to take apart the
• 9:49
Speaker 1: pipes in the apartment from the drain in the bathtub,
• 9:52
Speaker 1: they pulled out a bullet fragment, one silver hooped style earring,
• 9:57
Speaker 1: and a small clump of hair. Underneath the couch, police
• 10:02
Speaker 1: found a handgun. It was registered to DeAndre Booker. Ashley
• 10:13
Speaker 1: Elkins entered her ex boyfriend's apartment on the morning of
• 10:17
Speaker 1: January two, and it was now heartbreakingly obvious that she
• 10:21
Speaker 1: did not leave alive. The same camera that captured Ashley
• 10:26
Speaker 1: entering the complex that morning also caught DeAndre back and
• 10:29
Speaker 1: forth from his unit to the parking lot and surrounding
• 10:32
Speaker 1: areas for hours. Later that day, at about three p m.
• 10:37
Speaker 1: DeAndre carried what appeared to be a large cardboard box
• 10:40
Speaker 1: towards a dumpster that sat in the far corner of
• 10:43
Speaker 1: the parking lot to the top right view of the camera.
• 10:48
Speaker 1: It was dark by the time he resumed his activities outside.
• 10:52
Speaker 1: At around a quarter past eleven, a figure is shown
• 10:55
Speaker 1: crossing the street to the seven eleven. From there, the
• 11:01
Speaker 1: figure returns pushing a shopping cart. Shortly afterwards, he emerges again,
• 11:09
Speaker 1: this time carrying a pink bag to the dumpster. These
• 11:13
Speaker 1: trips to various garbage dumpsters around the complex continue for hours.
• 11:19
Speaker 1: At one am, he carries a larger, heavy duty black
• 11:22
Speaker 1: garbage bag to the north parking lot, where another dumpster
• 11:26
Speaker 1: was used to dispose of another bag. By four am,
• 11:33
Speaker 1: a figure that again emerges from his building is captured
• 11:36
Speaker 1: walking visible only in silhouette, along the tree line that
• 11:40
Speaker 1: separates Pinehurst Complex from the buildings next to it. Again,
• 11:44
Speaker 1: the figure carried a large dark bag towards a dumpster,
• 11:49
Speaker 1: then is shown returning to Deandre's building, no longer carrying
• 11:53
Speaker 1: the trash bag. Footage captured just after four am on
• 11:59
Speaker 1: January third, is the most disturbing. DeAndre re emerges with
• 12:04
Speaker 1: the shopping cart, but it is no longer empty. DeAndre
• 12:11
Speaker 1: first walked towards the dumpster on the left side of
• 12:13
Speaker 1: the parking lot and finds the fence blocking his path.
• 12:18
Speaker 1: He is seen backtracking with his cart and then pushing
• 12:21
Speaker 1: it along the walkway to the right of the screen,
• 12:24
Speaker 1: eventually reaching the dumpster at the far left corner of
• 12:27
Speaker 1: the camera's vision. His movements at this point are almost
• 12:32
Speaker 1: entirely concealed by the darkness. However, analysis of shadows revealed
• 12:37
Speaker 1: DeAndre attempting to lift a heavy object from the cart
• 12:41
Speaker 1: into the dumpster. He fails at first and must collect
• 12:45
Speaker 1: the object from the ground, and with some effort, he
• 12:48
Speaker 1: is able to lift it in. He then appears to
• 12:51
Speaker 1: empty more items from the cart into the bin. DeAndre
• 12:56
Speaker 1: is captured at the dumpster for nearly five full minutes.
• 13:00
Speaker 1: It was just before five am by the time police
• 13:08
Speaker 1: uncovered the surveillance footage from around the apartment complex. The
• 13:12
Speaker 1: garbage collection had already taken place. The items that DeAndre
• 13:17
Speaker 1: had so painstakingly disposed of in the dead of the
• 13:20
Speaker 1: night were gone. There were, however, traces left behind. Police
• 13:26
Speaker 1: seized the dumpsters and began analyzing the contents. Forensic teams
• 13:31
Speaker 1: found traces of blood in the bottom of the container.
• 13:35
Speaker 1: These samples returned a match to Ashley Elkins. The same
• 13:38
Speaker 1: was true when testing was completed on the samples taken
• 13:41
Speaker 1: from inside of Deandre's apartment. Ashley's DNA was an overwhelming
• 13:47
Speaker 1: percentage match to these samples taken from the bathroom, the hallway,
• 13:51
Speaker 1: and elsewhere. Inside the unit.
• 13:55
Speaker 5: We met with Chief Berlin, and we met with multiple
• 13:58
Speaker 5: deputy chief and they gave us an update on what
• 14:04
Speaker 5: was found yesterday. What they indicated was there was substantial
• 14:09
Speaker 5: evidence collected at the home of the ex boyfriend. They
• 14:13
Speaker 5: also indicated that based upon that evidence, that Ashley was murdered.
• 14:23
Speaker 5: They don't have her body at this time. They do
• 14:26
Speaker 5: have good leads on where her body is. They have
• 14:33
Speaker 5: a strong suspicion of where she may be.
• 14:36
Speaker 3: The boys seven years old.
• 14:39
  Speaker 2: Yes, I won't have a mom anymore, No, they won't.
• 14:43
Speaker 5: What happens next for them is going to take a
• 14:46
Speaker 5: lot of family. Everyone here is going to take the
• 14:49
Speaker 5: love and support of the family that they do have,
• 14:52
Speaker 5: their father, they have grandparents. Everyone's going to embrace them
• 14:56
Speaker 5: and support them. That's actually starting now. The healings start now.
• 15:04
Speaker 1: Investigators learned that trash from the dumpster where DeAndre had
• 15:08
Speaker 1: emptied his cart would be taken to a transfer station
• 15:11
Speaker 1: on Grosbeck Highway in Roseville, where it would then be
• 15:14
Speaker 1: loaded onto another truck and taken to a landfill in
• 15:17
Speaker 1: Lenox Township. Beginning on January thirteenth and continuing for five
• 15:22
Speaker 1: straight days, Officers from fifteen law enforcement agencies combed through
• 15:27
Speaker 1: a targeted area of six and a half acres of
• 15:30
Speaker 1: the Pine Tree Acre landfill. Its total area measures over
• 15:34
Speaker 1: three hundred and seventy acres. The trash was sifted through
• 15:38
Speaker 1: two inches at a time as systematically as possible, in
• 15:42
Speaker 1: the hope of discovering any items linked to the murder, or,
• 15:46
Speaker 1: if they were fortunate, locating Ashley's remains.
• 15:50
Speaker 6: We have some audios we are taking back for processing.
• 15:54
Speaker 6: We're not sure if they're related to the case or not,
• 15:56
Speaker 6: so we got to do some more work on that.
• 15:58
Speaker 6: I think we're in the right spot. We just got
• 15:59
Speaker 6: more work out of it.
• 16:01
Speaker 1: After a week of searching, the efforts ceased. No remains
• 16:05
Speaker 1: were found. In the days immediately following Ashley's disappearance, investigators
• 16:13
Speaker 1: had spoken with DeAndre over the phone twice. During those conversations,
• 16:18
Speaker 1: he told them that he had met with Ashley at
• 16:21
Speaker 1: his home on the morning of January second. She came
• 16:24
Speaker 1: by just to talk sometimes, he claimed. He told them
• 16:27
Speaker 1: that she left his place on the same day and
• 16:30
Speaker 1: that he had not heard from her since. When asked
• 16:34
Speaker 1: if she had left wearing the same clothing as when
• 16:36
Speaker 1: she arrived, he said yes. When asked to confirm that
• 16:40
Speaker 1: she left in her Silver Malibu, he again said yes.
• 16:44
Speaker 1: These were, of course, easily disprovable statements, so as investigators
• 16:50
Speaker 1: continued to compile a case against him for murder and
• 16:53
Speaker 1: to search for Ashley, they arrested DeAndre Booker for lying
• 16:58
Speaker 1: to a peace officer. DeAndre was eventually located at a
• 17:03
Speaker 1: girlfriend's home in Flint. Law enforcement had been able to
• 17:06
Speaker 1: track him to the location from the cameras and foam
• 17:09
Speaker 1: data beginning on January third, at just before six a m.
• 17:13
Speaker 1: After hours of disposing items and dumpsters, an uber driver
• 17:17
Speaker 1: collected DeAndre outside of the Motor City pawn Shop, which
• 17:20
Speaker 1: is located near to his apartment. Cameras showed him disposing
• 17:24
Speaker 1: of a few items there as well, before he caught
• 17:26
Speaker 1: a ride. The uber dropped him in Flint, where police
• 17:30
Speaker 1: would find him days later. At the girlfriends they found
• 17:34
Speaker 1: Deandre's clothing identical to the items worn by the figure
• 17:38
Speaker 1: captured on camera disposing of bags of bloody evidence, his
• 17:42
Speaker 1: black coat with the fur lined hood, dark ripped jeans,
• 17:46
Speaker 1: and a black hat. When DeAndre was arrested in Flint,
• 17:51
Speaker 1: investigators obtained his cell phone, along with a search warrant
• 17:54
Speaker 1: allowing them to access its data. What they found was disturbing.
• 17:59
Speaker 1: It also painted a picture of Ashley's likely fate. Beginning
• 18:03
Speaker 1: on December twenty ninth, two days before he booked the
• 18:06
Speaker 1: hair appointment under a fake name in an attempt to
• 18:09
Speaker 1: gain entry into Ashley's home, DeAndre searched nine millimeter silencer, Roseville, Michigan,
• 18:15
Speaker 1: and murder out of rage x After trying to see
• 18:19
Speaker 1: Ashley and being turned away, He searched shotgun through pillow
• 18:24
Speaker 1: and can you track location when phone is off? As
• 18:29
Speaker 1: well as the disturbing and revealing question what happens to
• 18:33
Speaker 1: trash after it's picked up? There were also indications that
• 18:39
Speaker 1: DeAndre was plotting ways to escape justice in the days
• 18:43
Speaker 1: after the murder. While at the house in Flint, he
• 18:45
Speaker 1: searched what to do on the run, how to beat
• 18:48
Speaker 1: a polygraph, and finally delete Google History. As DeAndre Booker
• 18:55
Speaker 1: was arraigned on his initial charges, the search for Ashley continued.
• 19:00
Speaker 1: He was held on a two hundred and fifty thousand
• 19:03
  Speaker 1: dollars bond.
• 19:05
Speaker 4: And do you believe, based on evidence that you have
• 19:08
Speaker 4: or more that you'll look at, that you will find Ashley?
• 19:13
  Speaker 2: I'm hopeful.
• 19:15
  Speaker 5: I'm optimistic.
• 19:18
Speaker 7: I'd like to go ahead and tell you yes, but
• 19:21
Speaker 7: it's only if somebody or evidence points to where that happens.
• 19:26
Speaker 5: Somebody may cooperate in the investigation.
• 19:29
Speaker 8: Sometimes it takes a little bit, but I'm hopeful.
• 19:35
Speaker 6: Can you repeat what was said this morning in regard
• 19:37
Speaker 6: to the suspect being in a vehicle with a female
• 19:40
Speaker 6: I believe and then came back alone. So did he
• 19:44
Speaker 6: have help? Can you talk about the relevance of why
• 19:48
Speaker 6: that was introduced today? We believe he acted alone. There
• 19:52
Speaker 6: was video portion of a second female. It was investigator thoroughly.
• 19:56
Speaker 6: She was not involved.
• 19:57
Speaker 1: She was unwitting. Since his arraignment, DeAndre Booker's appearances in
• 20:04
Speaker 1: court have been characterized by unpredictable and unhinged behavior. At
• 20:09
Speaker 1: his pre trial hearing in August twenty twenty five, DeAndre
• 20:13
Speaker 1: at first refused to sit while in court, even as
• 20:16
Speaker 1: Ashley's mother took the stand.
• 20:20
Speaker 3: Mister Booker, I was told earlier that you did not
• 20:23
  Speaker 3: want to sit.
• 20:24
Speaker 5: You you consider if you wish, but if.
• 20:27
Speaker 3: You don't want, you can stand. No response.
• 20:34
Speaker 9: So with that unique question, jud Jo, I just want
• 20:39
Speaker 9: to I want to play someone a record on the
• 20:42
Speaker 9: record and injection to the defendant, postuating this manner in
• 20:46
Speaker 9: an attempt, my opinion, to intimidate witnesses that are going
• 20:49
Speaker 9: to be testifying against them today. That's the court runs,
• 20:53
Speaker 9: it's court room the way it's he said, and I
• 20:55
Speaker 9: recognize that, but if you want to just place it
• 20:57
  Speaker 9: on the record.
• 21:00
Speaker 1: By this time, Deandre's sordid past had come to light.
• 21:04
Speaker 1: A veteran of the U. S Army, DeAndre had gone
• 21:06
Speaker 1: a wall in twenty seventeen and was later less than
• 21:10
Speaker 1: honorably discharged. State prosecutors revealed that he had prior counts
• 21:15
Speaker 1: of both larceny and fraud. The thirty two year old
• 21:19
Speaker 1: was unemployed at the time of his arrest. Over several
• 21:23
Speaker 1: days in his pre trial hearing, evidence of his guilt
• 21:26
Speaker 1: was meticulously outlined. During this time, he routinely refused to
• 21:31
Speaker 1: get dressed or leave his cell to attend to the
• 21:34
Speaker 1: hearing in person. Attempts to connect him to the proceedings
• 21:37
Speaker 1: via video link, while partially covered by a blanket, mostly
• 21:41
Speaker 1: failed when he would not agree to stop screaming and cursing.
• 21:45
Speaker 1: When his video feed was unmuted, DeAndre could be heard screaming,
• 21:50
  Speaker 1: let me go.
• 21:52
Speaker 7: Oh, DeAndre Booker could hear the court he.
• 21:58
Speaker 8: Ad, it's obvious to me that in the cell uh,
• 22:26
Speaker 8: he's not himself available visibility purposes.
• 22:35
Speaker 1: I can let the court know that based.
• 22:39
Speaker 8: Upon money, conversations and meetings with Bookers.
• 22:49
Speaker 7: Just one the second place, it's real clearer to the
• 22:54
Speaker 7: court that mister Booker is screaming he's.
• 22:57
Speaker 8: In the jail cells.
• 22:59
Speaker 7: Uh, rather than just listen to that, I don't know
• 23:04
Speaker 7: if you could hear us, I am I muted?
• 23:06
  Speaker 8: Please.
• 23:12
Speaker 1: State prosecutors outlined their case through testimony by responding officers, detectives,
• 23:17
Speaker 1: and lab technicians. They also revealed one missing piece of
• 23:21
Speaker 1: the puzzle, the identity of the mystery woman who drove
• 23:25
Speaker 1: Ashley's Malibu from the complex on the day she disappeared.
• 23:29
Speaker 1: It was speculated that she might have been an accomplice.
• 23:33
Speaker 1: The truth is that this woman was a family member
• 23:36
Speaker 1: who testified she had been manipulated. Payne Barksdale is the
• 23:41
Speaker 1: adopted daughter of DeAndre Booker's sister. Though less than a
• 23:45
Speaker 1: decade separated them by age, Pain had grown up adoring
• 23:49
Speaker 1: the man she viewed as her uncle. He had been
• 23:51
Speaker 1: a supportive figure in her young life. After gradually losing
• 23:55
Speaker 1: touch over the years. The two had only recently reconnected.
• 24:00
Speaker 1: On the morning of January second, DeAndre asked his niece
• 24:03
Speaker 1: to do him a favor. Could she come by in
• 24:06
Speaker 1: the early afternoon and move his friend's car.
• 24:11
Speaker 4: He called me and he said that he needed his
• 24:16
Speaker 4: friend vehicle to be removed from his apartment complex because
• 24:19
Speaker 4: he didn't want to get in trouble.
• 24:20
Speaker 2: Now his apartment complex.
• 24:22
Speaker 4: Had you ever been there before? No, that was my
• 24:25
Speaker 4: first time. Do you know that address?
• 24:27
  Speaker 3: No?
• 24:27
Speaker 4: I do not. Do you know what city is in Roseville?
• 24:32
Speaker 8: So he called you and said he needed help with.
• 24:36
Speaker 4: Moving the cars. Yes, it was a co worker. It
• 24:39
Speaker 4: was a mail co worker. He said that he had
• 24:41
Speaker 4: went to his house. The car wasn't registered or it
• 24:44
Speaker 4: didn't have any place. He had just walked the vehicle.
• 24:46
Speaker 4: He didn't have a license, and so with me having
• 24:49
Speaker 4: a license, he wanted me to drive it to his
• 24:53
Speaker 4: coworker's house. He said the cost was hot in the area,
• 24:56
Speaker 4: so me having a license, if I was to get
• 24:58
Speaker 4: pulled over, I wouldn't be in trouble.
• 25:00
Speaker 1: So that was so at some point.
• 25:02
Speaker 4: On January second, to the defendant's apartment. Yes, requested the
• 25:07
Speaker 4: Uber Uber DeAndre cussed over from me from my apartment
• 25:11
Speaker 4: to go to his apartment.
• 25:12
Speaker 1: Pain followed Deandre's directions to the location of an apartment
• 25:16
Speaker 1: complex he claimed was home to his friend, and they
• 25:19
Speaker 1: left the car there. He told her his friend wanted
• 25:23
Speaker 1: the keys left on the seat before ordering an uber
• 25:26
Speaker 1: to drive them back. He carried a bag from the
• 25:29
Speaker 1: car to a nearby dumpster and disposed of it. The
• 25:35
Speaker 1: final stop DeAndre asked Pain to make was to a
• 25:38
Speaker 1: nearby beauty supply store. Cameras captured the uber in the
• 25:42
Speaker 1: far right edge of its frame driving into the store
• 25:45
Speaker 1: parking lot. Payne exited the car and entered the store
• 25:48
Speaker 1: while DeAndre waited in the vehicle. He asked her to
• 25:52
Speaker 1: pick up a couple of items. Investigators suspect that this
• 25:56
Speaker 1: is when Ashley's cell phone was powered back on in
• 25:59
Speaker 1: an attempt to register her location at the store and
• 26:03
Speaker 1: not at DeAndre Booker's apartment.
• 26:07
Speaker 4: And then he asked me, if you turn a phone off,
• 26:11
Speaker 4: will anyone still see a location? I said, whatever location
• 26:15
Speaker 4: the phone was at before the phone was turned off,
• 26:17
Speaker 4: then yes. And then he asks if him and I
• 26:19
  Speaker 4: to shure locations.
• 26:21
Speaker 7: So when he asked you this this was after you
• 26:24
Speaker 7: were at calling meeting with the deetendant.
• 26:26
  Speaker 4: Prat Yes.
• 26:31
Speaker 1: The preliminary hearing in August twenty twenty five unveiled an
• 26:35
Speaker 1: impressive two hundred pieces of evidence. Considering the volume of
• 26:39
Speaker 1: information presented, Judge Bodeker agreed with the defense's request to
• 26:44
Speaker 1: extend a ruling until the full court transcripts, along with
• 26:48
Speaker 1: every piece of evidence, can be thoroughly reviewed. This process
• 26:52
Speaker 1: is expected to take several months. At that time, further
• 26:57
Speaker 1: arguments are likely to be presented before a decision is
• 27:00
Speaker 1: made about whether DeAndre Booker will continue to trial. For
• 27:06
Speaker 1: Ashley Elkin's family, the investigation had provided many answers, though
• 27:11
Speaker 1: of course not complete closure. The question remains what could
• 27:16
Speaker 1: possibly have caused the rage towards Ashley that DeAndre referenced
• 27:21
Speaker 1: in his searches days before she disappeared. What motive could
• 27:25
Speaker 1: he have had to take his ex girlfriend from her children?
• 27:30
Speaker 1: Can you describe their relationship?
• 27:31
Speaker 4: Have you been around them in they way?
• 27:33
Speaker 2: Yeah, he was around my whole family. When I say,
• 27:36
Speaker 2: I thought he was the one who's gonna marry her.
• 27:44
Speaker 2: He was good to her kids, He played ball with them,
• 27:48
Speaker 2: he took their haircuts, He was there. He's always in
• 27:52
Speaker 2: my house. I cooked who's part of the family. So
• 27:57
Speaker 2: I'm just really shook they would do something like this
• 28:05
Speaker 2: the way accepted him, We accepted you and our family.
• 28:14
Speaker 2: Her grandmother you met her, you or her father side
• 28:18
Speaker 2: of family. You were good to those boys, you know
• 28:22
Speaker 2: you didn't think that. How will affect those boys? The
• 28:26
Speaker 2: ones you have got their haircut, the ones you kept
• 28:28
Speaker 2: some times when she had to run areas, the ones
• 28:30
Speaker 2: you played ball with, the ones used to depart. You
• 28:32
Speaker 2: didn't care about them.
• 28:36
Speaker 1: A gofund me page has been launched to raise money
• 28:38
Speaker 1: intended for a trust to financially support Ashley's two young sons.
• 28:44
Speaker 1: They remain in the care of their father and other
• 28:46
Speaker 1: family members. A link to the page can be found
• 28:49
Speaker 1: in the description below. As of the publication of this documentary,
