- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. I'm excited today to be with you
- 0:19in Isaiah Chapter 11, especially after the past two, maybe 3
- 0:27episodes have all been God's judgement.
- 0:30So it's been a lot of like really sad things happening.
- 0:33And in Isaiah 11, we get back to the good news.
- 0:37This is what God is building towards, that the old, the evil
- 0:43is purged so that there can be a good society, there can be a
- 0:49good, if you will, world focused on God and His way, His care and
- 0:57love for people. And so we're going to read
- 0:59through that together. Isaiah Chapter 11 and verse #1
- 1:02it says this. Then a shoot will grow from the
- 1:06stump of Jesse. Let me pause there real quick.
- 1:09Last episode we looked at Assyria's judgment that ended in
- 1:15verse #34 actually at verse #33 where it says, look, Yahweh, add
- 1:22an eye of heaven's armies will chop off the branches with
- 1:25terrifying power, and the tall trees will be cut down, the high
- 1:29trees felled. He's clearing the thickets of
- 1:32the forest with an axe, and Lebanon with its majesty will
- 1:35fall. So Assyria is going to come
- 1:37through by decree of the Lord, 'cause there to be a judgement
- 1:41on Israel, and even Judah itself would not escape unscathed from
- 1:47that invasion. And then we read this in verse
- 1:50#11 for these trees that have been felled by Assyria.
- 1:57Verse #1 Then a shoot will grow from the stump of Jesse.
- 2:03That is David's father. So King David, that kingly line
- 2:09where the kings of Judah were from, but ultimately where the
- 2:14Messiah would be from. And that's where our focus needs
- 2:16to be there. A shoot will grow from the stump
- 2:19of Jesse, and a branch from his roots will bear fruit here.
- 2:24The branch from the tribe of Jet or from the tribe of Judah, It's
- 2:29the branch of Jesse here that comes and bears fruit.
- 2:34So what comes from this kingly person that David's line would
- 2:41not be wiped out. Even though Israel and Judah
- 2:44would experience some judgment from the Lord, the line of David
- 2:48would still continue. And what would happen with this
- 2:51kingly person? Verse #2 The Spirit of Yahweh
- 2:57will rest on him, a spirit of wisdom and understanding, a
- 3:02spirit of counsel and strength, a spirit of knowledge and of the
- 3:08fear of Yahweh. So in verse #2 we read 7 times
- 3:15the Spirit of Yahweh. This is the Holy Spirit is
- 3:19living and working through this descendant of David.
- 3:25And why would I count 7 times that the Spirit is mentioned?
- 3:30Because when you look at Revelation, you'll see the
- 3:34apostle John thinking about this portion of Scripture and he'll
- 3:38talk about the seven spirits of God that are there with Jesus.
- 3:44OK, are there 7 holy spirits instead of a Trinity?
- 3:47Do we have whatever you would call 9 persons in one God?
- 3:52No, this is saying the seven old expression of who the Spirit is
- 4:01and and what does the Spirit bring?
- 4:03Well, he's the Spirit of Yahweh that he is not some just random
- 4:09breath or existence or power. It is God's own presence.
- 4:14And so it is the spirit of Yahweh.
- 4:16He is the Spirit of wisdom, He is the spirit of understanding.
- 4:21He's the spirit of counsel, the spirit of strength.
- 4:25You can think of what Paul says in Second Timothy, one that God
- 4:27has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a
- 4:32sound mind. He is this one that gives
- 4:34strength. He is a spirit of knowledge and
- 4:37of the fear of Yahweh. And so here, this spirit that
- 4:42gives wisdom into our brokenness, counsel,
- 4:45understanding, knowledge of the fear of Yahweh, the one that
- 4:50leads us in the right way, this is what this descendant of David
- 4:55is going to be known by. He is going to act like God
- 5:00would act. He is going to have the wisdom
- 5:04that God himself possesses. So again, this is such a glaring
- 5:11picture of Christ and what a joy, especially as you remember
- 5:15a couple chapters ago where Isaiah said in Isaiah 7 to King
- 5:21Ahaz, who was from the line of David, he was like, oh, House of
- 5:24David, like you, you basically, you annoy people, but will you
- 5:29also annoy God himself through your refusal to obey?
- 5:33So the descendants of David right now, we're not following
- 5:37the Lord. They did not have this wisdom,
- 5:39but based on the promise of Second Samuel 7, that there
- 5:43would be a descendant from David's line that would sit on
- 5:46his throne forever. Isaiah says.
- 5:49And as Isaiah prophecies, he sees that there is going to come
- 5:54one who, yes, is from the line of David, but is so much more.
- 5:58What makes the difference? Well, it is God's presence that
- 6:02makes the difference, and certainly He is the ultimate
- 6:06Emmanuel. God with us verse #3 His delight
- 6:10will be in the fear of Yahweh. Jesus was concerned with what
- 6:16the Father wanted done. He did not seek His own will as
- 6:19he came down as a man, but instead he sought the will of
- 6:23God. It says he will not judge by
- 6:25what he sees with his eyes, He will not execute justice by what
- 6:30he hears with his ears, but he will judge the poor righteously
- 6:35and execute justice for the oppressed of the land.
- 6:40Jesus was not going to just operate by his own 5 senses, He
- 6:45was going to rely on the Spirit of God to give him what he
- 6:50needed to say or do in any given circumstance.
- 6:53And what a joy that this is because as we think about it, I
- 6:58am not God Incarnate. Therefore, I if the only thing
- 7:04that Jesus had was his divine nature, well, I don't have that
- 7:10divine nature and so I can't follow Jesus into obedience.
- 7:13But Jesus as a man did everything that he did in the
- 7:17power of the Holy Spirit, guided by the Word of God.
- 7:22And I have the Spirit and the Word of God as well, and that
- 7:27means that I can follow Jesus obediently.
- 7:30I will fail at that. Every single one of us do.
- 7:34But we don't have to fail. We don't have to, in any given
- 7:38moment, choose the wrong path. We can as we encounter
- 7:43hardships, as we encounter arguments, when we need to make
- 7:48a decision, we can either go by what we can discern with our
- 7:52five senses, or we can rely on the Word of God to say, well,
- 7:56right now I feel like I should be angry and lash out, but I
- 8:01remember what Scripture tells me.
- 8:03Be angry and do not sin. Do not let the sun go down on
- 8:07your wrath. And I can remember that I can
- 8:10remember be patient with one another, bearing with one
- 8:13another, and forgiving one another even as God for Christ's
- 8:17sake has forgiven you. I can think about all of those
- 8:19things when I run into decisions.
- 8:21I can either do what Adam and Eve did in the garden where they
- 8:24see the fruit that it it's good to look at and it will make you
- 8:28wise. What their senses told them was
- 8:31the fruit is totally fine. If they had listened to the word
- 8:34of God in the voice of God, he said this will kill you.
- 8:39They chose to go with their senses instead of going by the
- 8:43word of God. Because if you remember all the
- 8:45trees in the garden looked good. God saw everything that he had
- 8:49made and behold it was very good.
- 8:52So everything looked good, but they had to rely on The Voice of
- 8:56God to know what is the right choice and what is the wrong
- 9:00choice. They chose to ignore the voice
- 9:02of God. May we be like Jesus and not
- 9:06operate based on simply animal instinct, what we want to do at
- 9:12any given moment, or what our senses tell us.
- 9:15You should automatically make this choice.
- 9:18No, my friend, rely on the Word of God.
- 9:20Let Jesus instruct you about what you need to do, even as
- 9:25Jesus as he walked this earth. And one day, as he rules, he
- 9:29will rule in the wisdom of the Holy Spirit, who gives us what
- 9:34we need from the Word of God and through the Word of God.
- 9:38I I know I've mentioned this before as well.
- 9:40Sometimes people pit like the Holy Spirit and the Word of God
- 9:45at odds with one another. The Holy Spirit is who gave us
- 9:48the Word of God. And if you want to truly know
- 9:51what the voice of the Holy Spirit sounds like, get into
- 9:55these books in the Old and the New Testament, and you will get
- 9:58to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit over and over again so
- 10:02that when He is speaking to you, you know what His voice sounds
- 10:06like. His voice is not just your inner
- 10:09dialogue. His voice is not every impulse
- 10:13that you have. His voice aligns with what is in
- 10:17Scripture because His is the voice that speaks through
- 10:20Scripture. Holy man of holy men of God
- 10:24spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit or in That's first
- 10:29sorry, that is second Peter one for no yes, second Peter one
- 10:34says that Second Timothy 3 says that all Scripture is breathed
- 10:40out by God and is profitable. So get to know the voice of the
- 10:45Spirit through what He has already spoken in the Word.
- 10:50Continuing in verse #4 hear the Messiah, the, the branch from
- 10:54Jesse, this king from the line of David.
- 10:57He will strike the land with a scepter from his mouth.
- 11:01That is his word that he speaks. And you can read about that over
- 11:06and over again in Revelation. That's a, a picture that John
- 11:09really loves and picks up. He says, and he will kill the
- 11:12wicked with a command from his lips.
- 11:15There will no longer have to be armies that are fighting, if you
- 11:19will. When Jesus comes back to rule
- 11:22and to reign on this earth, He is the One that is.
- 11:25He simply states the command. The same word that created
- 11:29everything that exists. That same word can choose to
- 11:34execute the wicked verse #5 Righteousness will be a belt
- 11:39around His hips. Faithfulness will be a belt
- 11:43around His waist. That is the core of who He is.
- 11:47What brings him all together is this righteousness and
- 11:51faithfulness. And what a joy that because
- 11:54Jesus is righteous, He will never be unrighteous towards
- 11:58you. He will never do you wrong.
- 12:03He will walk with us through hard times.
- 12:06But because He is holy and He is good, He will never do us wrong.
- 12:12And He is faithful. He's consistent.
- 12:15Who he was 1000 years ago is who he is today is who he will be in
- 12:2030 million years, and we can have confidence in our future
- 12:23based on the word of God and the faithfulness of God.
- 12:28Verse number six, a beautiful promise.
- 12:30The wolf will dwell with the lamb, and the leopard will lie
- 12:35down with the goat. The calf, the young lion, and
- 12:38the fattened calf will be together and a child will lead
- 12:42them. The cow and the bear will graze,
- 12:44Their young ones will lie down together and the lion will eat
- 12:47straw like cattle. An infant will play beside the
- 12:51cobras pit, and a toddler will put his hand into a snake's den.
- 12:55They will not harm or destroy each other on my entire holy
- 12:59mountain, for the land will be as full of the knowledge of
- 13:03Yahweh as the sea is filled with water.
- 13:07On that day when Jesus rules and reigns everything now, even in
- 13:12our natural world, that brings death and devastation and
- 13:17destruction, sorrow, even fighting between animals will
- 13:22cease on that wonderful day. Think about, you know, I've,
- 13:27I've got my 3 1/2 year old Evelyn and I would never, ever,
- 13:32ever want her to go anywhere near a snake or a cobra.
- 13:36But on that day, it will be completely safe.
- 13:39On that day, there's no longer the predators and the prey.
- 13:44God has made all things new. Now this is set off as poetry.
- 13:50It's done in poetic lines. You can even as we read through
- 13:54those, see the different patterns.
- 13:56So I don't want to mandate an overtly literal rendering of
- 14:05that. It could be that there's still
- 14:08regular rhythms of the animal Kingdom, and this is being used
- 14:12as a picture of the peace that now exists as the Messiah is
- 14:17there. However, knowing God, knowing
- 14:19His ability to do anything that He wants, it could very well be
- 14:24that in that day, not only will mankind cease to make war, but
- 14:28even the animal Kingdom will cease to make war.
- 14:32Verse #10 On that day, the root of Jesse will stand as a banner
- 14:37for the peoples. The nations will look to Him for
- 14:40guidance, and his resting place will be glorious.
- 14:45Here. This king from David's line will
- 14:48be king over all of the earth, and everywhere there will be
- 14:52peace and joy, righteousness and guidance for the people here.
- 14:57Even as I read that the nations will look to Him for guidance.
- 15:01It makes me wonder, well what kind of questions would people
- 15:04have in a world that Jesus is over.
- 15:06And to me it just brings a delight that some of the if you
- 15:12will, problem solving things that we that exist in our world
- 15:15today, They're not all as a result of sin.
- 15:19You can think even back to the Garden of Eden as God gave Adam
- 15:24his initial missions to name the animals, that is to give them a
- 15:30a purpose and a role within the garden.
- 15:33And as he told Adam to dress the garden is kind of the older way
- 15:40to phrase it. I'm turning over there to see if
- 15:42there's a different word that is used in more modern
- 15:46translations. God says they're in verse #15
- 15:53God took the man and placed him in the Garden of Eden to work it
- 15:57and to watch over it. That there, there's even some
- 16:01questions there that come up in my mind.
- 16:03OK, well, if everything was very good and he's watching over it,
- 16:08why is he watching over it? Like, are there bad things?
- 16:12And, and that's not fleshed out for us there in Genesis 2, but
- 16:17he is supposed to be watching over.
- 16:18And so some of these wonderful mysteries that Scripture has for
- 16:22us where he tells us some wonderful things about the
- 16:24Messiah's reign. But there's things that I don't
- 16:26know the answers to yet, but I'm excited to discover them one day
- 16:31with my Lord. Verse #11 On that day, the Lord
- 16:34will extend his hand a second time.
- 16:36Not, not now in judgement as we read in the previous chapter,
- 16:41but he's, he's extending his hand a second time to recover
- 16:44the remnant of his people who survive from Syria, Egypt,
- 16:49Pathros, Kush, Elam, Shinar, Hamas, and the coasts and
- 16:53islands of the West. He will lift up a banner for the
- 16:57nations and gather the dispersed of Israel.
- 17:00He'll collect the scattered of Judah from the four corners of
- 17:03the earth. Ephraim's envy will cease.
- 17:06Judah's harassing will end. Ephraim will no longer be
- 17:09envious of Judah, and Judah will not harass Ephraim, but they
- 17:13will swoop down on the Philistine flank to the West.
- 17:16Together they will plunder the people of the east.
- 17:19They will extend their power over Edom and Moab, and the
- 17:22Ammonites will be their subjects.
- 17:25Yahweh will divide the Gulf of Suez.
- 17:27He will wave his hand over the Euphrates with his mighty wind,
- 17:32and we'll split it into 7 streams, letting people walk
- 17:36through on foot. There will be a highway for the
- 17:39remnant of his people who will survive from Assyria, as there
- 17:42was for Israel when they came up from the land of Egypt.
- 17:47So here Isaiah gives, he's given these a couple times before.
- 17:50I'll draw attention to it every time he says it.
- 17:53Here he's using some poetic language to describe the return
- 17:59to Israel as being like when they came from Egypt.
- 18:05So if you will, this is a second exodus, only instead of coming
- 18:08from Egypt, they're coming from Assyria and from Babylon back to
- 18:12the land of promise. And I think here one of the
- 18:17things that's highlighted is they will be able to experience
- 18:21the land as God intended for them.
- 18:24So if you go to Israel today, there are no longer any
- 18:27Philistines. There are no longer Edomites,
- 18:30Moabites, Ammonites. They are long gone to the annals
- 18:34of history. And so here, as Jesus brings
- 18:38back his people, there's not going to be a, if you will, a
- 18:42resurgence of those old nations. And then that happens here.
- 18:47This is poetic language saying what God did in the first
- 18:52Exodus, which is what these people were supposed to
- 18:54experience, was the fullness of the land.
- 18:56God delivering them and protecting them, scattering out
- 19:01the enemies that were consistently robbing, harassing
- 19:06and slaving, all that kind of stuff.
- 19:08They will experience the land as God intended for them to at the
- 19:13first. So if you have any questions,
- 19:16please let me know. I think that about covers
- 19:19everything that we need to go over today for Isaiah 11.
- 19:24The next episode, Isaiah 12 is just a short 6 verses where
- 19:29Isaiah continues to talk about this wonderful day when what was
- 19:33broken is now restored to the fullest through this descendant
- 19:38of David's line who we know now as King Jesus, the Son of David.
- 19:45Thanks for tuning in today. Hope you have a wonderful day.
