- 0:00SPEAKER_00: I'm glad to see you all here tonight and I'm not concerned that you're here because we all have a mind and we all should be concerned about strengthening it.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: So I'm glad you're here tonight and I hope you learned something.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: Does anybody have anything exciting that they're looking forward to this summer?
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: Anything that they're doing?
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: Maybe you're reading a good book or waiting for a movie to come out.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Any vacations planned?
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: Maybe, maybe.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: So uh I don't know how many summers ago, it was probably eight or nine, my family took us to Worlds of Fun and rode, I don't know what ride it was.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: I don't think it was a roller coaster.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: It's just a normal ride, but I remember mostly the day that I was laying on the bench recovering from motion sickness.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Does anybody else get that?
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: So, you know, I got nauseated, and that would happen to me a lot when I was a kid, riding boats, you know, back of the car and get sick.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: So fast forward a few years from there, the fair is in town, and cute boy says, Hey, let's go on that ride.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: The one that kind of looks like a Ferris wheel, but it's not because it's this egg-shaped container, and you pull the lever, you know, and you spin.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: And so I'm like, I don't think so.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: But he's cute and persistent.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: So I say, okay.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: So we go on the ride, and he has control of the lever.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: So we spin and we get off, and I'm still just um excited that you know we're talking.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: And one of our friends has just turned 16, so he has a car.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: First time he's like any of us have driven in a car with anybody who's not our parents.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: So I'm feeling a little bit queasy, but uh, you know, I didn't want to end the communication, so we get in the car and we're driving, and I'm starting to feel more nauseated, but uh that's not cool either.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: So I puke in the new car, okay.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: So we get to where we're going, and cute boy cleans up my vomit while I lay down and I decide to marry him.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: So, seven years later.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: So, anyway, cute boy and I get married, and last spring we go to Branson and go to Silver Dollar City, and I spend most of the day with my six-year-old, and he takes my 13 and 15-year-old to ride the fun rides because I still don't really like the fun rides, although I ride them now, I don't get sick, I take dramamine preventively, ibuprofen, muscle relaxers, and I'm good.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: And but you know, but I also really value connection.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: So at the end of the day, when my teenagers who don't invite me to do a lot of things with them, say, Hey mom, do you want to go on a roller coaster?
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: I go, sure, sure.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: I mean, by now I can say no to my husband, but not so much to my kids.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: So um, and and I really I wasn't alarmed to go on the roller coaster, but we go on the roller coaster and we get up in line and it's the it's the power keg.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: So it shoots out really fast and goes upside down a couple times, and so we're in line, and I I'm not afraid, but my memory network is saying, remember that sometimes you get sick when you go upside down, and that you had this whiplash injury from when you were 16 and your neck hurts all the time.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: So that's okay, I'm still having fun.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: And I sit on the roller coaster and I remember while we're going because it's a really, really shaky one, and I'm just saying to myself, take a deep breath, relax your muscles, let go.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: You're having fun, because I talk to myself a lot like this, and I teach my clients to talk to themselves like this.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: It's called mindsight, being aware of what's going on in our body and our mind and responding to that appropriately.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: So we get off the ride and you feel the exhilaration, right?
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: Because you didn't die, your brain said, Oh, I'm going upside down.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: But then you get off and you're like, oh, that was fun.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: And um, so that happened.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: You're wondering why I'm telling you a story about a roller coaster, and there's gonna be a couple reasons.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: One is because we're gonna talk about your brain and your mind tonight, and just the process I described of what was going on and how my brain was pulling from my memory network to influence my feelings and my perceptions about what was gonna happen.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: That's the first reason.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: So let's start out talking about the brain.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: I love talking about the brain, okay?
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Um, so just to make it simple, I want you to think about it in three general levels.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: So if we were thinking about it like this, say our hand is our brain, our very bottom brain, our lower reptilian brain, is concerned with survival.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: Don't die, make more people, basically.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: It controls our autonomic nervous system.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: So it tells our heart to beat, it tells us how to breathe, it tells us to digest.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: We don't have to think about any of those things, it just automatically takes care of business for us, okay?
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: This part of our brain is very powerful because when it perceives threat, it can shut off the information coming from the other parts of the brain.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: So if all of a sudden this room were on fire, nobody would say, I forgot my purse, let me go back, right?
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: We would just get out because our survival brain would say, You gotta go, you gotta survive.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: This part of our brain is very useful.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: You're probably familiar with hearing fight or flight, it's actually fight, flight, freeze, or fawn, those are the responses that we have.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: And I talk about this a lot with my work with clients because we talk about trauma.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: So this part of our brain, when we're young, is very active, right?
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: So you can go and the child goes, right?
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: Threat everywhere.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: But then as we get older, if things are going along and we're safe, by the age of 10 or 12, this part of our brain starts to calm down a little bit and say, okay, good, we're safe, we can relax, we don't have to be on guard.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: For some people that doesn't happen for good reason because when they're scared and their environment isn't consistent or they're not safe, their amygdala says, We're not gonna prune, we're gonna see everything as a threat.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: So not only is, you know, like crowded places are a threat, and you know, someone looking at you can be a threat, falling in love can be a threat, everything can be a threat because your brain is saying danger, don't die.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Okay, so it's a very intelligent form of our brain.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: It's our unconscious part.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: So bottom brain, reptilian brain, survival.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna keep you alive, okay?
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: Then in the middle of our brain is our limbic brain, our emotional brain.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: This is the part of my brain that said, get on the ride, even though you're gonna get sick, right?
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: So we interact with people, we perceive things, we feel things, we have memories, and that influences what's coming in, okay?
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: So what's coming in from the world is not the same for any two of us, just as what I just talked about.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: You were recalling memories about are you safe?
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: Are you not safe?
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: And you were saying yes or no, right?
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: So our mind, our limbic brain is based on our experiences and it's our emotional brain, and it's where we make decisions from, okay?
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: And most of it's subconscious.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: So we're not walking around thinking these things that are in our limbic brain, we're experiencing them.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: It's what's coming up.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: So what comes in is from the world, and what comes up comes from our experiences.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: So, and then the top part of our brain, this is our thinking brain.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: We would think of this as in our adult brain.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: So this is where we talk, this is where we learn, this is where we move.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: We think we make decisions up here, but really not.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: Okay, so only five to ten percent of our thoughts are conscious.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: 60 to 80,000 thoughts a day, only five to ten percent are conscious.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: So has anybody ever made a new year's resolution?
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: Has anybody ever made the same news resolution twice?
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: Okay, right.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: Because not because you didn't think it was a good idea, you analyzed it up here and you go, I think it would be a good idea to save more money or to lose weight or to eat healthier or to be more patient with my kids.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: And up here it made sense.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: But if you have ever set a goal, not accomplished it, if you have ever decided you want to do something and yet you do the other thing instead, then you made the decision up here, but you did not have a buy-in from your limbic brain.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: Bottom brain wins, okay?
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: So just something to think about.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: So when we talk about our brain, um, the other thing, the other reason my story is relevant is because I spend a lot of time, like I said, talking with people about their brain and educating them on how to get back to a state of relaxation.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: Because our brain has two basic states, fight or flight, or relaxation.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: What we want is for us to be in a state of relaxation, and then a threat comes in, danger, danger, my kid just broke a bone, and then we go back down, right?
- 8:32SPEAKER_00: Or I'm feeling okay, then I get a little bit nervous, but then I regulate myself and I come back down.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: We're supposed to be at a calm state.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: That's what's best for our body.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: If we're in a state of ah, fight or flight all the time, 1400 chemical reactions happen in our brain when we get scared, right?
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: So that suppresses our immune system for about eight hours.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: So this leads to chronic illness.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: Bunch of autoimmune diseases have their basis in dysregulation, I believe.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: But um, so the other reason I got, I'm really excited to give this talk tonight is because when we got off that roller coaster in Branson and I was feeling the exhilaration and just, you know, being with my kids, it was nothing, it wasn't a real fearful situation.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: It was, but I was talking to myself through it because I knew that I needed to relax.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: Oops, sorry.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: But I didn't know that sitting right next to me, my daughter had sustained a very serious vestibular concussion on that roller coaster.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: So for the last 15 months, not only have we been, my husband and I, trying like crazy to find all the resources and educate ourselves as much as we can about the brain so that we can find help for her.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: But, you know, how do you stay in homeostasis when you have a constant threat, right?
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: The threat's not removed.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: And I know many of you have been on this kind of ride.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: You know, you're strapped in, you don't have any control, more downs and ups, your life's turned upside down.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: And but life goes on, and we can't live in that state of anxiety even if what's coming in the world is like really, really hard.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: And so over the I think God just gives you the opportunities to practice what you preach sometimes.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: And so this last 15 months I've been like, what do I know?
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: What do I know?
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: What do I know?
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: What do I know?
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: How do I keep myself from you know not losing, at least holding on to at least the sanity that I had before this happened?
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: And I found some things really helpful.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: You know, I've done some things not well, and some other things have really helped, and I hope to share that with you because I know that, you know, no matter where we are, if we were in a good season of our life or we're in a hard thing, or maybe we've been in a hard thing forever, or maybe we're not in a hard thing right now, but maybe the whole thing has just been hard because we've been in that state of threat all the time.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: That there's some really powerful things that we can do with our mind to influence our brain.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: So uh Norman Vincent Peel is who is a late minister and he's the forefather of the positive psychology movement.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: And he says if you change your mind, you can change your world.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: And there's a lot of research that supports just how powerful our mind is.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: Okay, and I wish my daughter were here because she's just amazing, and she won't tell me how she's gotten through this whole thing, and we're still really deep into it, but someday I'm gonna get to know like how she got through it because she's just amazingly steady and calm and patient, and um, and I know that that's that God gave her those things because he knew her season and he knows our season and that everything that we have, he has given us to be able to get through things like this.
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: He has given us to have a sound mind, it's his intention for us, and so we need to take hold of that responsibility and train our brain just like we would any other thing in our life.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: It's about being very intentional.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: So the mind, here's how our mind is different than our brain.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: So our brain is this physical structure, it's where things happen.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: Our mind are our thoughts, our perceptions, our way of seeing the world.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: So if you think about a fingerprint, there are no two fingerprints that will ever be the same or are ever the same.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: It's like God's saying, You're so special, you're so unique.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: Nobody has your talents, your story, your version of my spirit, and our minds are like this too.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: You can have identical twins with the same DNA, and yet their minds will be very different because our minds are a unique culmination of the things we experience, our thoughts, our personality.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: And again, remembering that we only have access to 5 to 10 percent, not that we have access to, but that's what we're aware of, just on a normal basis.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: Five to ten percent of our thoughts are here.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: That leaves a whole lot that we can retrieve and work with and change.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: So let's talk about how our mind gets formed.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: Because what happens is when a baby's born, first of all, they're taking in information in the utero that's affecting their brain.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: But when they come out, right, they have no memory yet.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: Nothing has happened yet, bad or good.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: But when that baby looks out at the world, they start learning, they start experiencing, they start feeling, they start connecting.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: And so this baby looks up, right?
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: Like, looks up, mommy's there.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: I cry, what do I see from the world?
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: I see mommy's face, are her eyes compassionate?
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: What do I feel?
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: Do I feel her arms around me?
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: Is she rocking me?
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: You know, and and if that happens and it happens consistently, they go, Oh, I'm safe.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: And then as they get older, maybe they cry, and dad says, Stop being such a crybaby.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: And they go, Oh, maybe I shouldn't cry, right?
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: So we're learning things all the time because we're very adaptive creatures.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: And a kid doesn't come into a family and say, hey, now that I'm here, we're gonna do things my way, although in toddler years maybe.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: But uh, for the most part, they adapt, right?
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: So what works?
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: What works in their family?
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: How do I feel emotion?
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: Is it okay?
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: Do I call out for help?
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: You know, when we get mad, do we hit each other?
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: If I have a big emotion, can mom or dad handle it or can they not?
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: Am I safe?
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: So they're learning, their mind is developing around identity and around experience.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: And our brains, because they're so sophisticated, they capture everything that's coming in.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: What do I see, smell, feel, touch, hear?
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: And they take all of that information and it gets encoded.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: And then our mind says, like when I was, you know, taking my dramamine that morning, even though I've had many, many roller coasters where I've not been sick, I've learned, like, hey, that's a memory, I'm gonna pay attention to that.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: I'm going to, and as I'm on there and I feel myself kind of bracing because I've had that old memory, I tell myself, it's okay, like take a deep breath, you know, you're fine.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: If you relax, it's not gonna hurt your neck.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: I wish I told my daughter the same thing.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: But anyway, um, so that's how our brain is formed is by our experience, our learning who I am.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: And this subconscious material we don't question.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: Why don't we question it?
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: Why don't we go, well, of course that wasn't my fault?
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: I was five.
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: Of course that wasn't my fault.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: The reason we don't question it is because we learn so many other things.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: And once we learn them at a conscious level, so we learn how to tie our shoe, right?
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: We learn how to tie our shoe, we have to work really hard at first to do it, but then we do it over and over again.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: How many have how many of you have to sit and think about tying your shoe?
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: Now, maybe later if there's cognitive deficits or we have a stroke or something, but ordinarily that that has that conscious memory has moved to the subconscious, and it's just now part of us.
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: The other reason is because our parents are so truthful, right?
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: So they say, This is your hand, this is your tummy, this is your head, that's tree, that's sky, they're labeling the whole world for us.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: And as we go out and we say this is a ball, and then we go to the playground and we go, Can I have a ball?
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: And the kid gives us a ball, and we go, they were right.
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: So then if the parent or or even the perception of, so maybe everybody has their back turned, and maybe for good reason, you know, maybe dad's deployed and mom's depressed and has five kids and a job and nobody's there, and they think, I'm not important, or my feelings don't matter.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: Some of those things, I'm not saying we all have those, but we all have something.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: We all have an insecurity, we all have a broken place because we came into the world and the world is broken, and no matter how great our parents did it or tried to do it, there were things that we misperceived.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: There were things that as kids we didn't know how to understand.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: And those messages we took in and we believed them just as truth.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: So one of the key features of our automatic thoughts is that we don't question them.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: They're running around like subliminal messages in our mind, and we don't stop to challenge them, and we don't even know that we can.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: We don't even know, we just say things like, it's just my anxiety, I just can't do that, or all the women in my family have depression, or it's just this or that.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: And I'm not saying those things never exist, but we don't give ourselves enough credit that we can have freedom from that because some of those things are strongholds in our minds that have been put there, and we have the opportunity to challenge those, we have the opportunity to break out of those.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: We just need to know how, and we need to know that it's possible, and we need to be alert.
- 17:37SPEAKER_00: And we know that scripture tells us, you know, 2 Timothy 1.7 says, You were created not with a spirit of fear, but a power, love, and sound mind, right?
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: That's how we were created.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: That was our original state, right?
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: So we start out with a sound mind, and then the world comes in.
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: And the world, no matter how good it is, has some things that do not reflect the exact truth of God, right?
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: So the world influences us.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: And then so scripture also says that we must not be conformed to the world, but we must be transformed by renewing our mind.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: Get it?
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: So we were born with a sound mind, we get conformed by the world whether we like it or not, and then it's our responsibility to do the work of the renewal that God promises is possible, right?
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: So start with a sound mind, the world contaminates us, and now we have to renew our mind.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: So do not be conformed.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: Conformed means to comply to a set of rules or regulations, right?
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: So if we're conformed, we're agreeing that all that stuff in our subconscious mind that we never really agreed to in the first place, or we never maybe even tested, is true, right?
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: Have you ever thought, you know, my family always did it this way, but I think we're gonna celebrate Christmas this way now, or we're gonna change this tradition, and those things we change.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: Things about worth and value take a little bit more work because they're just there and we don't know them.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: And I know people don't know them, and some of you don't know them, because and I have in this last year, I've as I've been working on what's coming up for me when I see my daughter so sick, you know, is a lot of stuff.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: I'm a helper, I want to fix it.
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: What comes up for me when I see her sick is utter helplessness and feeling completely out of control, right?
- 19:24SPEAKER_00: Because it's my job to make people feel better, and I cannot make her feel better.
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: I can do what I can, but but I I can't judge my value based on whether or not I can succeed in that, because there are things that are beyond my control.
- 19:37SPEAKER_00: But how I know some of you struggle that too is because almost every person I ever seen in counseling over 20 years, they come in and they tell me a story, and it's a hard story usually, and I'll listen to them and then I hand them a sheet of paper and I say, is there anything on this sheet of paper that even if you know up here with your thinking brain isn't true, but it but somewhere inside it might feel true or it might come up for you, and they'll look down the list, and there's probably, I don't know, about 30 things, you know.
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: Some of them have to do with worth, and I'm not good enough, I'm not worthy, I'm not valuable, I'm not significant, some have to do with responsibility, I should have done something different.
- 20:16SPEAKER_00: You know, I did something wrong.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: It's not my fault.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: Someone wrote trust, I can't trust anyone, I can't trust myself.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: It's not okay for me to have feelings.
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: And they'll look at the list, and while two minutes ago they didn't know that that was there, the tears will come, and that is what has come up, right?
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: That's the issue.
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: It's not this thing that happened.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: That thing that happened was hard, but it's what you believe with your mind about that thing.
- 20:44SPEAKER_00: What do you believe about your in your mind, about you, about God, about the world, it's what you believe about that thing in your mind that impacts the emotions that you have about it.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: So if we want to renew our minds, the process is how do we get to deeper than the 5%?
- 21:04SPEAKER_00: How do we get to that stuff?
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: Now, sometimes that stuff is so hard.
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: Sometimes there's trauma that's so hard that it's not just, I mean, you have in there in your handout like an igloo, like conscious, subconscious, conscious, there's a unconscious, there's a difference.
- 21:19SPEAKER_00: Unconscious material, you're not gonna get to on your own, right?
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: The stuff that's been pushed out of your complete awareness, you need some help.
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: Or if you if you go, I can't feel feelings, we're afraid to feel feelings.
- 21:31SPEAKER_00: I can't feel feelings, right?
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: Because they're so overwhelming that when they come up, I'm gonna have a panic attack, right?
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: Then they're for very good reason your brain has protected you and put that where you can't get to it.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: And that's another just awesome way that God has made us.
- 21:49SPEAKER_00: So when we think about how do we get to this ideal state of our brain, influenced by our mind, which is homeostasis, I sense alert, I respond to alert.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Come back down, but I'm relaxed most of the time.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: And how do we keep our?
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: We have to be very strategic about it.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: And I'm gonna tell you how to do it, but I'm gonna tell you, nothing you learn tonight will change your life unless you apply it.
- 22:12SPEAKER_00: I had an exercise video one time, and she's like, You can't think yourself into a better body.
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: Well, you can think yourself into a better mind, but you have to be very deliberate about it, and you have to do it over and over and over and over and over again, right?
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: Like you were trained the first time, you know, you don't learn the word the very first time.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: It's said over and over and over again, and then you learn it, and you have that experience over and over and over again.
- 22:35SPEAKER_00: So here's what we need to do if we're gonna transform our mind.
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: And this is this is exciting because it just wakes up so many possibilities for how we can live fuller lives.
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: Not only can we have better emotional stability and have better calm and season those hard things that come in in our life, but we can also reach goals, we can, you know, discern for ourselves what we really want, we can live congruently because there's nothing worse than making decisions up here that feel bad in here.
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: And we know when that happens, like we're saying yes, but our spirit's saying no, right?
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: That's because there's incongruence usually.
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: And so we need to figure out how to know ourselves and be able to discern God's voice and not just comply with the way we've always been, okay?
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: So the first thing we're gonna talk about when we think about changing our brain is that we have to start bottom up, okay?
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: Because if we're overwhelmed and we're anxious, remember when I said bottom brain shuts off communication to top brain?
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: You can have all these strategies loaded.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: If you can't get to them because your brain's saying you're in danger all the time, they're not gonna be effective.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: So I want to talk to you.
- 23:54SPEAKER_00: There's probably more on your handouts, and I'll remember to go over, but we need to really work on calming our body.
- 23:59SPEAKER_00: And the single, I'm gonna say this, and you're gonna like really just breathing.
- 24:03SPEAKER_00: Breathing, okay?
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: Breathing.
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: We don't breathe right.
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: Anybody who has anxiety, you have disordered breathing.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: You might not have received that diagnosis, but it's true.
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: If you have any anxiety, you have disordered breathing, okay?
- 24:15SPEAKER_00: If you have disordered breathing, you're gonna have anxiety.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: And so this is the kind of breathing we want is breathing when we breathe in through our nostrils and we go in to our diaphragm right down here, okay?
- 24:28SPEAKER_00: And we and if you're anxious and you need to calm your body, you're gonna want to breathe in for four seconds, okay?
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: You're gonna go and hold it, and exhale and hold it.
- 24:43SPEAKER_00: And inhale and hold it, and exhale and hold it.
- 24:52SPEAKER_00: And when your mind is swirling with a bunch of worries and hard things, you will find you're not doing this, right?
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: And it's it's hard to stop and do this.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: And if you try to do it, you know, has anybody ever had a big dinner party and you try all new recipes you've never had before?
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: I mean, I don't have dinner parties, but I but no, you wouldn't want to do that, right?
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: Because if you practice it when you need it, it will not work.
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: It but if you practice it consistently, the research shows that if you do this kind of breathing for 20 minutes a day, you can do 10 minutes in the morning, 10 minutes at night, five, five, ten, however you want to split up.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: If you do this kind of breathing for 20 minutes a day, in 15 weeks, your brain will look different on a scan.
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: That's powerful, right?
- 25:39SPEAKER_00: Because some of us have had these patterns for years, but we don't know that if we stick with it and we train, and we train our brain, because what's happening when you do that is there's this vagus nerve that runs from our brain all the way down, it goes all the way down through our intestines.
- 25:53SPEAKER_00: I'm not going to talk about food tonight much, but it's huge.
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: Okay, but this vagus nerve goes all the way down through our intestines, and when we breathe deeply like this, what happens is it stimulates a relaxation.
- 26:03SPEAKER_00: So it's your body signaling your brain, we're okay.
- 26:07SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 26:08SPEAKER_00: The vagus nerve is constantly sending signals back and forth, back and forth, saying, Are we okay?
- 26:14SPEAKER_00: And so when we breathe like this, we're gonna we're gonna send a message to our brain that we're okay.
- 26:20SPEAKER_00: Another thing you can do is stand like this.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: Might feel funny doing this, but if you stand like this for three minutes, your cortisol levels will go down, okay?
- 26:33SPEAKER_00: Significantly, your testosterone levels will go up, which gives us a state of calm.
- 26:39SPEAKER_00: And again, what this is doing when we stand like this is forcing air down into our diaphragm where we need it, and it's sending this relaxation.
- 26:47SPEAKER_00: And when we put our shoulders back, we're opening up our rib cage so that we can utilize all of our airwaves.
- 26:55SPEAKER_00: When we look down, we get afraid, right?
- 26:58SPEAKER_00: You've seen kids are afraid, or we're afraid, right?
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: We're down like this.
- 27:02SPEAKER_00: This posture tells our body you're okay, you're safe.
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: So our body's constantly sending signals to our mind of how to respond.
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: When we're afraid, our head is gonna jet forward.
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: Okay, we need to bring it back.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: So these are things that we can do with our body to signal our brain.
- 27:21SPEAKER_00: Proper nutrition.
- 27:22SPEAKER_00: I mean, there's not one diet that's good for everybody, but there are a lot of things that are bad for almost everybody.
- 27:29SPEAKER_00: But just to speak in a general way, you know, I just did an integrative um health certification this past year, and the trainer said, there's no such thing as junk food.
- 27:40SPEAKER_00: There's junk or there's food, right?
- 27:42SPEAKER_00: It's one or the other.
- 27:44SPEAKER_00: So just eat healthy, eat healthier.
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: You'll be surprised how many toxins that'll clear out your of your body.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: I've had people that have come to me for anxiety disorders, and you know what, it was food, and they changed their diet, and guess what?
- 27:59SPEAKER_00: They feel better.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: So we can eat healthier.
- 28:01SPEAKER_00: We can go to bed with our circadic rhythm.
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: This is hard for us too.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: We're getting busy with kids, this is hard for me, but you know, you go to bed at nine o'clock when the sun goes down, it signals your brain.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: So much happens during sleep.
- 28:13SPEAKER_00: The parts of our brain that are responsible for calming some of these lower parts of our brain, get rest at night, right?
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: When we relax, they grow bigger.
- 28:24SPEAKER_00: Our brain changes structures with what we do with our body and with what we do with our thoughts.
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: So the first thing we have to do is get your body calm.
- 28:33SPEAKER_00: There's also some good yoga poses.
- 28:35SPEAKER_00: Um, I'm not going to demonstrate those tonight, but if you were to go up against a wall, have your bottom all the way against the wall, and put your legs straight up against the wall, what would happen is your femurs, these big bones in our thighs would relax into our pelvis, and that would stimulate a vagus nerve.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: So if you're thinking about something distressing, try breathing, try that.
- 28:57SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, you can take a magnesium bath, hot bath, and magnesium relaxes our body.
- 29:03SPEAKER_00: It's an important, um, it's an important mineral that we would that we can get, just absorb through our skin.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: We can just have some good practices in place.
- 29:11SPEAKER_00: If you are suffering from depression, you probably need more cardio, you know, like four times a week, four or five times a week, no one wants to hear that.
- 29:20SPEAKER_00: People are going, really?
- 29:22SPEAKER_00: Um, but it it does, where if we're anxious, yoga or something like that, where we're really feeling into our body.
- 29:29SPEAKER_00: That's the next thing we're gonna get to.
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: So there's a part of our brain called the insula.
- 29:33SPEAKER_00: Okay, you don't need to know that name, but you need to know that God specifically gave you a part of your brain whose sole purpose is to feel into your body, right?
- 29:41SPEAKER_00: To notice I've got a pit in my stomach, my shoulders are tensing up, my breath is shallow, my heart is racing, my palms are sweaty.
- 29:48SPEAKER_00: There's a whole part of our brain that's designed to give you that information.
- 29:53SPEAKER_00: Problem is it's covered with cortisol receptors, so if we're stressed out a lot, guess what?
- 29:57SPEAKER_00: That insula is not very healthy.
- 29:59SPEAKER_00: So we need to pay attention to our body.
- 30:02SPEAKER_00: So that that part, every time we do that, you know, our insula goes, oh yeah, like you're using me, right?
- 30:08SPEAKER_00: It's we start to practice that reflux in our mind and it changes our brain, okay?
- 30:15SPEAKER_00: So after we get a little bit calm and we have our wits about us, then we can move to what are we gonna do?
- 30:22SPEAKER_00: What are we gonna do with our cognitive processes of our mind that are gonna change us?
- 30:28SPEAKER_00: Okay, and this is the part where you know, uh Paul, who's been imprisoned, he's been shipwrecked, he's you know, headed for martyrdom, he's you know, been hungry, he's experienced every kind of hardship that we can imagine in his body.
- 30:45SPEAKER_00: And he says, I've learned to be content in any circumstance.
- 30:48SPEAKER_00: And he says, What do we do?
- 30:50SPEAKER_00: We demolish our all arguments, set up against the pretense of God, so demolish.
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: Again, this is a verb, something we must do, we must demolish.
- 30:58SPEAKER_00: We must take captive of every thought and make it obedient.
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: So we demolish, take captive and make it obedient.
- 31:08SPEAKER_00: And from someone who's in shackles and you know, been beaten, do you think those words were chosen inconsequentially?
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: He's like, you're gonna have to fight for this, you're gonna have to do these things, and you're gonna have to be aggressive about it.
- 31:20SPEAKER_00: And so we have to, that's the part, that's the part where we're renewing our mind, we're renewing what's there by taking hold.
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: And that's where we have to know more than what's up here, more than that five to ten percent.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: We have to know what's going on in our mind that has been impacted by those experiences that we've had.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: So this is this is an important piece, and this is something we want to, we want to have this observer part of us that's just constantly doing that.
- 31:46SPEAKER_00: This observer is constantly watching our mind, noticing our body, paying attention.
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: And of course, we we need to, if we don't know what God says is truth, we need to find out, you know, and um we can we can get books on the promises of God, we can we can read his word because when you're in this process, you're gonna have to know truth, and there is no other truth.
- 32:09SPEAKER_00: There is no truth.
- 32:10SPEAKER_00: I can't say, well, this is my truth.
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: Well, it's not my truth, it's it's my truth for me, but it I don't determine truth because I'm influenced by everything I've seen, heard, experienced, and everything that anybody who is imperfect has taught me.
- 32:23SPEAKER_00: And so there is no one truth to evaluate.
- 32:26SPEAKER_00: So if we're gonna take hold of these arguments, we better know what we're gonna evaluate and test them against.
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: Okay, so as we do this, as we feel into our body and we notice our sensations, right?
- 32:39SPEAKER_00: And and let me just say, like it's it's I say, oh, there's this part of our brain that's designed to feel, we need to just use that part.
- 32:47SPEAKER_00: There's something really scary about feeling uncomfortable feelings.
- 32:52SPEAKER_00: You know, mindfulness says be in the moment, and it's it's powerful.
- 32:56SPEAKER_00: Like if you look at the studies on mindfulness, when our when our brain is in a mindful state, and let's just substitute prayer.
- 33:03SPEAKER_00: We don't have to be on a rock with a mat.
- 33:05SPEAKER_00: But in prayer, we're if we're still and we're present with the moment, right?
- 33:13SPEAKER_00: Connecting to our body, connecting to our spirit, that's a concentrated mind.
- 33:20SPEAKER_00: C.S.
- 33:21SPEAKER_00: Lewis says a concentrated mind and a sitting body makes for better prayer than a kneeling body and a half asleep mind.
- 33:32SPEAKER_00: We don't want a mind half asleep, right?
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: We want a concentrated mind.
- 33:36SPEAKER_00: And for this to happen, we have to be still and we have to be willing to feel.
- 33:45SPEAKER_00: So all this information's coming in, sensory, right?
- 33:48SPEAKER_00: Noise, TV, radio, kids, husbands, jobs, everything we dogs, everything we have going on, makes it really hard to be still.
- 33:59SPEAKER_00: You know, sometimes over this last year, I I feel pretty calm most of the time, but over this last year I just have to turn everything off.
- 34:06SPEAKER_00: And just like, you know, even the radio was too much because it just was so much stimulation coming in.
- 34:13SPEAKER_00: So we have to be willing to be still and feel it.
- 34:17SPEAKER_00: And the other thing is I think we're accustomed to not feeling a lot of discomfort.
- 34:20SPEAKER_00: There's so much that we don't have to feel now, physically speaking, right?
- 34:24SPEAKER_00: I mean, we have air-conditioned homes, a lot of us, we have, you know, we have heat in the winter.
- 34:30SPEAKER_00: Most of us will probably never really experience like true hunger.
- 34:34SPEAKER_00: So, you know, epidural, uh, there's nothing wrong with wanting to, you know, experience physical comfort.
- 34:43SPEAKER_00: But we can't get through life experiencing emotional comfort all the time.
- 34:48SPEAKER_00: And if 1400 chemical reactions happen in our body when we feel stressed, I don't think God wants us to not feel that.
- 34:55SPEAKER_00: We have to feel that.
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: It says, don't be surprised, you will have trials of many kinds.
- 35:00SPEAKER_00: And all we have to do is look at all the Psalms and all the way through scripture where people are in experiencing very difficult emotions.
- 35:09SPEAKER_00: But now I think when we have an emotion, we think that's a really bad thing.
- 35:13SPEAKER_00: I shouldn't be feeling this.
- 35:14SPEAKER_00: I have to do something to get away from this feeling, right?
- 35:19SPEAKER_00: Rather, because we don't maybe have the skills for knowing how to get to the other side of it.
- 35:24SPEAKER_00: We feel like it's gonna take us over, so it's not gonna be this wave that comes in and then recedes back.
- 35:29SPEAKER_00: It's gonna become this wave that comes in and we get sucked in the undertow and we're lost at sea forever, right?
- 35:35SPEAKER_00: But if we know how to calm ourselves, that's not gonna happen.
- 35:39SPEAKER_00: So we have to gain confidence in those skills.
- 35:41SPEAKER_00: When we practice these things, we practice letting the emotion coming in and breathing through it and noticing what am I thinking, what am I saying to myself, what do I believe about that?
- 35:53SPEAKER_00: And that's hard because I know in my mind, like when the hard thing comes in, I just ruminate on the hard thing.
- 35:59SPEAKER_00: I can hear myself.
- 36:00SPEAKER_00: It's like, you know, I can't believe this, I can't believe this, this is never gonna get anywhere, this is never gonna be right, I can't believe this.
- 36:05SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh, it's been six months, it's been nine months, oh my gosh, you know, what are we gonna do?
- 36:07SPEAKER_00: What if this, what if that, what if, and that, and then it just goes, right?
- 36:11SPEAKER_00: I think we all do that some moments, but we have to hear that and we have to rein that in and just say, I feel sad, I feel really sad, I feel really scared, I feel really betrayed, whatever it is we're feeling, right?
- 36:30SPEAKER_00: We just have to say the feeling, not I am, but I feel.
- 36:35SPEAKER_00: This is a feeling, this is one emotion, and you know what?
- 36:38SPEAKER_00: There are other emotions, and that's part of what you know we do with uh mindfulness is be grateful.
- 36:46SPEAKER_00: I was Christmas shopping, I saw this little box that TJ Maxx and it said, I'm grateful for.
- 36:50SPEAKER_00: I bought it and I put it on my desk and with all these little note cards.
- 36:54SPEAKER_00: Because you know what?
- 36:55SPEAKER_00: Really hard days, my daughter's really bad, but I have two other kids and they're doing really great, right?
- 37:02SPEAKER_00: So, but we're focused on the pain.
- 37:05SPEAKER_00: And and we have to say thank you, or thank you that I can care for this person, or thank you that you know we have providers, or thank you that we're finding answers, thank you that my husband's persistent and you know, searches, and thank you that um you've you've given us friends and family, and you know, that we have a home, and there's always something to be thankful for.
- 37:24SPEAKER_00: And so, along with our hard emotions, we have to say, I feel this, but if we say a part of me feels really sad, can we say, and there's another part of me that feels really grateful, and there's another part of me that has a lot of hope, and there's another part of me that knows this will not go on forever, and that's that's the that's where we get to truth, and we'll talk about in a minute.
- 37:47SPEAKER_00: So, anyway, just what are we what are we thinking?
- 37:49SPEAKER_00: What are we feeling, okay?
- 37:51SPEAKER_00: And then what are we thinking?
- 37:52SPEAKER_00: And I just set off thinking all these things, right?
- 37:55SPEAKER_00: And some of them, some of those things we think on the surface might be true, right?
- 37:59SPEAKER_00: On the surface, we say I think the situation stinks, I think this is hard, I think this is not fair, I think we were mistreated, I think that person did a bad thing to me, and that assessment might be true, but it's not the only truth, right?
- 38:17SPEAKER_00: And that's the thing we need to get to.
- 38:18SPEAKER_00: We need to be able to hold both that it's not the only truth, it's just a part of the truth, and when we know the full truth, then we have to speak that truth until that old our thoughts right are obedient.
- 38:44SPEAKER_00: Is this making sense?
- 38:47SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 38:47SPEAKER_00: So when we do that, I would encourage you to isolate the thought.
- 38:54SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 38:55SPEAKER_00: So we're gonna isolate the thought.
- 38:57SPEAKER_00: So um, in my example, like, I can't handle this.
- 39:00SPEAKER_00: I just hear myself, I can't handle this, I can't handle this.
- 39:05SPEAKER_00: That's not true.
- 39:07SPEAKER_00: I have handled it every single day.
- 39:09SPEAKER_00: And she I'd say, she can't she can't handle this, she can't handle this, this is too much.
- 39:14SPEAKER_00: But she has, right?
- 39:16SPEAKER_00: And so the truth is that God will give us what we need, everything that we need in that moment, for that moment, but that moment's not here yet, usually.
- 39:25SPEAKER_00: It's like this moment.
- 39:26SPEAKER_00: Can I deal with this moment?
- 39:27SPEAKER_00: Yes, can I deal with this moment?
- 39:28SPEAKER_00: I can.
- 39:30SPEAKER_00: And when I can't, he will, right?
- 39:33SPEAKER_00: Because he's strong when we're weak.
- 39:34SPEAKER_00: And so when we run out of it and we think I cannot do, I had one of these days about maybe about two months ago, and we were a year in, and she's worse over this spring break than she was a year ago at that point.
- 39:48SPEAKER_00: And I just I love my anybody who knows me knows I love my job.
- 39:51SPEAKER_00: It's like a vacation to me.
- 39:53SPEAKER_00: I if I didn't have a family I loved, I'd have a hard time coming home.
- 39:56SPEAKER_00: I love my job.
- 39:57SPEAKER_00: But this day I woke up and I was like, I just can't do it.
- 40:00SPEAKER_00: I just that's what was going through my mind.
- 40:01SPEAKER_00: I can't do this, I cannot do this today, I cannot do this today.
- 40:05SPEAKER_00: But I knew I was gonna go, I wasn't gonna call my clients and cancel.
- 40:09SPEAKER_00: So I said to my husband, I'm really sad, I'm so sad.
- 40:13SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 40:14SPEAKER_00: And I cried and I got together and I got my kids breakfast and I drove to work, and then I had a like a really ugly cry.
- 40:21SPEAKER_00: And I looked at the clock and I'm like, I got a client in 12 minutes, and my clients are amazing people, but nobody wants to show up to counseling and have their therapist crying.
- 40:31SPEAKER_00: Can we all look like okay?
- 40:34SPEAKER_00: Maybe if you're in a cubicle with a spreadsheet, but I like I gotta get this together, right?
- 40:39SPEAKER_00: So I say, no, I can handle it, but I say, God, you know, I can't, I just I don't have anything.
- 40:44SPEAKER_00: I do not have anything.
- 40:46SPEAKER_00: Like, please just take care of her, and as if he wasn't already.
- 40:49SPEAKER_00: I'm like calling in a sub, you know, God, I can't be there today, so if you can, but uh, you know, but that's what went through my mind.
- 40:56SPEAKER_00: Like, I can't, I can't attend to both of these things.
- 40:58SPEAKER_00: Please just take care of her and just give me something for these people that you've sent me.
- 41:02SPEAKER_00: And, you know, I dried my eyes, and 10 minutes later I said, Hey, how are you?
- 41:07SPEAKER_00: Right, because that's my job.
- 41:10SPEAKER_00: And um, so I went through the day, I scheduled back to back, back to back.
- 41:14SPEAKER_00: So I didn't really think about my other situation.
- 41:17SPEAKER_00: I used to think of that as compartmentalizing, but on this particular day, some I two different things happened.
- 41:23SPEAKER_00: One client that I'd seen for a long time just thanked me.
- 41:26SPEAKER_00: It's like so encouraging.
- 41:28SPEAKER_00: It was so encouraging.
- 41:30SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 41:31SPEAKER_00: And I go home that night and I get an email.
- 41:34SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, same thing.
- 41:37SPEAKER_00: And I was like, how did that happen?
- 41:39SPEAKER_00: Because I had nothing, like nothing in the morning, right?
- 41:44SPEAKER_00: But we don't have anything that is our own anyway.
- 41:47SPEAKER_00: And so, one, it was really humbling that God heard that prayer, and it just reminded me that like he was in that wasn't anything good I did, but it also it's like you know, it's the connection, it's a connection to our pain, so we're afraid to feel it, but that's what allows us to connect with other people, and when we're in pain, we want to isolate, we want to pull away, and we want to not share that.
- 42:09SPEAKER_00: And I didn't share my pain in that session, but because I was that morning broken and open to it, like that level of me, that connection with God and connecting to myself allow me to connect to them in their pain.
- 42:26SPEAKER_00: And we we all have that within us to connect with others and to not go inside and to not be afraid that we can't handle those feelings because that's that's the creation of our mind, right?
- 42:40SPEAKER_00: Our experience forms us.
- 42:42SPEAKER_00: And if we're forming these experiences in the right way by talking to God, then those things that He gives us, they're not just for us, they're for everybody else, right?
- 42:55SPEAKER_00: Not just our family, but everybody we encounter.
- 42:58SPEAKER_00: And so when we use what He does in our life through our pain, we're able to connect with anyone else that has pain, which is everybody else that you will ever meet, right?
- 43:11SPEAKER_00: That's our bond.
- 43:13SPEAKER_00: And so we don't want to not feel the hard stuff.
- 43:19SPEAKER_00: Because I don't if I'd won the lottery that day, I don't think I would have had any more to give.
- 43:24SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 43:25SPEAKER_00: And I've had many days where everything was fine in my life and I didn't have any more to give.
- 43:31SPEAKER_00: I just I think God allowed that information to come in to say, you know what, it's okay.
- 43:38SPEAKER_00: Like it's okay to be sad.
- 43:40SPEAKER_00: And it's it's not gonna make you less than if you're in a sad season.
- 43:44SPEAKER_00: You just don't get stuck there, right?
- 43:48SPEAKER_00: You just, I mean, I'm glad that I went to work that day.
- 43:50SPEAKER_00: I'm glad that I wasn't on the floor all day because what I would have done is go through those same thoughts.
- 43:54SPEAKER_00: We have to say, okay, this is what I this is what's coming in, this is what's hard in my world, this is what I'm feeling.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: I'm feeling sad, I'm feeling scared, I'm feeling angry, and we feel that pain because it's a signal you gotta do something.
- 44:07SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 44:08SPEAKER_00: Like if we look away, we can't do that.
- 44:11SPEAKER_00: We have to make decisions, we have to take care of business, we have to be informed by that pain to know how to respond.
- 44:21SPEAKER_00: But we have to make sure that the way we're thinking about our pain is not distorted.
- 44:27SPEAKER_00: So when I say I can't handle it, it's like that's saying I'm the only one to handle it, and because God, this isn't going the way I thought it should go, then it's completely out of control because I've no longer got my finger on it.
- 44:42SPEAKER_00: So surely you must be out of control too.
- 44:45SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 44:45SPEAKER_00: That's kind of what I'm saying, is that like because it's out of my control that nobody else can fix it.
- 44:52SPEAKER_00: One time my daughter's favorite doctor, who I mean, she just loves and he's brilliant, and he's amazing, and we drive six hours to see him, and um three hours there, three hours back, not through six hours one way.
- 45:04SPEAKER_00: But we do that in a day many, many, many times.
- 45:06SPEAKER_00: And he was telling her about some limitations that she might have, and it was really, it's like she never cries, she's so strong, she never cries.
- 45:14SPEAKER_00: But this moved her a lot.
- 45:16SPEAKER_00: And um I said to her, you know, he is brilliant, he's like the smartest people that person that we have encountered.
- 45:23SPEAKER_00: Um, but he's not God, right?
- 45:26SPEAKER_00: God can do anything he wants, and so we don't have to be limited by that.
- 45:32SPEAKER_00: So when we say this situation's never gonna get any better, this can't get fixed, I couldn't handle it if that thing happened.
- 45:38SPEAKER_00: I oh, I could never handle it if you know something happened to my child.
- 45:42SPEAKER_00: I could never handle it if I went through divorce, I could never handle it if I went through bankruptcy, I could never handle it if you can, you can and you will.
- 45:49SPEAKER_00: And so if you say that, it's not truth.
- 45:52SPEAKER_00: You may feel like you couldn't handle it, but it's not truth, and it needs to be challenged because those things keep us very stuck.
- 46:02SPEAKER_00: God's truth says you don't know what's gonna happen an hour from now, right?
- 46:08SPEAKER_00: I didn't plan what happened, but I can't plan for tomorrow or the next day or the next day, and that's why that being in the moment, even if you don't like your moment, sometimes like be in my moment, I wanna be in someone else's moment, I'm gonna get on Facebook.
- 46:23SPEAKER_00: I don't like this moment.
- 46:24SPEAKER_00: But God doesn't work with us through other people's moments.
- 46:29SPEAKER_00: Other people can connect to us through their moments, but God wants to work with us through our moment.
- 46:35SPEAKER_00: So we have to be there in that moment and we have to feel it, and we have to align our thoughts with His.
- 46:39SPEAKER_00: So we can we calm down, we take in what we think, what we're feeling.
- 46:48SPEAKER_00: And then we need to get to what we know.
- 46:52SPEAKER_00: And that's what I was talking about when I said that's the only truth we have.
- 46:58SPEAKER_00: The only truth we have is what God says is our truth, right?
- 47:04SPEAKER_00: And so I want to I want to have you look at the psalm that I included on the last page.
- 47:16SPEAKER_00: Okay, because I just came across this and I was like, this is an exact representation, I think, of what needs to happen to us all the time.
- 47:26SPEAKER_00: So I'm just gonna read it.
- 47:28SPEAKER_00: So this is the feel part, okay?
- 47:30SPEAKER_00: I cried out to God for help.
- 47:32SPEAKER_00: I cried out to God to hear me.
- 47:34SPEAKER_00: When I was in distress, I sought the Lord.
- 47:37SPEAKER_00: At night I stretched out my untiring hands.
- 47:39SPEAKER_00: I would not be comforted.
- 47:41SPEAKER_00: I remembered you, God, and I groaned, I meditated, my spirit grew faint.
- 47:45SPEAKER_00: You kept my eyes from closing.
- 47:46SPEAKER_00: I was too troubled to speak.
- 47:48SPEAKER_00: I thought about the former days, the years of long ago.
- 47:51SPEAKER_00: I remember my song in the night.
- 47:53SPEAKER_00: And here's a transition.
- 47:54SPEAKER_00: He says, My heart meditated and my spirit asked.
- 47:58SPEAKER_00: These are the things, will the Lord reject me forever?
- 48:00SPEAKER_00: Will he never show his favor again?
- 48:01SPEAKER_00: Has his unfailing love vanished forever?
- 48:03SPEAKER_00: Has his promise failed for all times?
- 48:05SPEAKER_00: Has God forgotten to be merciful?
- 48:07SPEAKER_00: Has he in anger withheld his compassion from me?
- 48:11SPEAKER_00: And then there's another transition, and this is where we get to what we know.
- 48:14SPEAKER_00: And then I thought, to this I will appeal the years when the Most High stretched out his right hand.
- 48:19SPEAKER_00: I will remember the deeds of the Lord.
- 48:21SPEAKER_00: Yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.
- 48:24SPEAKER_00: I will consider all your works, I will meditate on all your deeds.
- 48:27SPEAKER_00: Your ways, God, are holy.
- 48:29SPEAKER_00: What God is as great as our God.
- 48:31SPEAKER_00: You are the God who performs miracles.
- 48:32SPEAKER_00: You display your power among the peoples.
- 48:35SPEAKER_00: With your mighty arm you redeemed your people, the descendants of Jacob and Joseph, the waters saw you, God, the waters saw you and write, the very depths were convulsed, the clouds poured down water, the heavens resounded with thunder, your arrows flashed back and forth, your thunder was heard in a whirlwind, your lightning lit up the world, the earth trembled and quaked, your path led to the sea, your way through the mighty waters.
- 48:59SPEAKER_00: Though your footprints were not seen, you led your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.
- 49:07SPEAKER_00: And that is the reality that we have to get to.
- 49:10SPEAKER_00: Is what is coming in from our world is such a sliver of God's reality.
- 49:16SPEAKER_00: It is the one reality.
- 49:17SPEAKER_00: It's what we think, hear, see, taste, touch, and we think that's all there is sometimes.
- 49:23SPEAKER_00: And we have to keep reminding ourselves that there is a parallel reality that overshadows everything in our world.
- 49:31SPEAKER_00: And that when we feel hopeless and we feel scared, and we no matter what we feel, we can know it's gonna end.
- 49:39SPEAKER_00: Because we know there is a there's a day where there's no more pain, there's no more sorrow, there's no more sickness, there's no more divorce, there's no more financial troubles, there's no more any of those things that weigh us down.
- 49:50SPEAKER_00: There's a day where there's no more tears, right?
- 49:52SPEAKER_00: No more sorrow.
- 49:54SPEAKER_00: And I just one morning I woke up and you know, all I mean, there is not there's not half a day that goes by in my home where my husband and I are not talking about the brain.
- 50:04SPEAKER_00: Like, right, all the time.
- 50:06SPEAKER_00: And one morning, and I just woke up and I was like, the helmet of salvation.
- 50:10SPEAKER_00: It was just like the helmet of salvation.
- 50:13SPEAKER_00: Like of all the things, I want to bubble wrap my daughter, right?
- 50:18SPEAKER_00: But like the helmet of salvation, it's already done.
- 50:21SPEAKER_00: Like he already has us, and he already completed it a long time ago, and all this stuff is just the journey back.
- 50:28SPEAKER_00: And so we have to be mindful of how we use these experiences because we don't want to feel any worse than we have to feel.
- 50:37SPEAKER_00: And I can tell you that I have done these things religiously.
- 50:40SPEAKER_00: I have paid attention to my body, and I have woken up in the middle of the night, and I have started to get on Google, and I have stopped myself, and I have said breathe, and I have calmed my body, and I have got on and I have done guided imagery relaxations.
- 50:53SPEAKER_00: Google's wonderful, use it for the right ways, right?
- 50:57SPEAKER_00: There's guided imagery.
- 50:58SPEAKER_00: I've said relax my body, and then I've, you know, read the scriptures and I've meditated on his truth.
- 51:05SPEAKER_00: And it's been the hardest year of my life, but it's probably been the one of the most learning and the most growth.
- 51:11SPEAKER_00: And I'm not at the point where I can say I'm glad it happened because I'm not.
- 51:15SPEAKER_00: But I can tell you I haven't been depressed and I haven't been anxious, and I'm not saying that as a badge of honor because I had an early life that gave me that relaxed state, right?
- 51:27SPEAKER_00: But I can also say that the first few months of this trial, I was up here.
- 51:33SPEAKER_00: I was like in shock.
- 51:36SPEAKER_00: You know, I was just in shock.
- 51:38SPEAKER_00: How could this have happened?
- 51:40SPEAKER_00: How could this have happened?
- 51:41SPEAKER_00: She's healthy and now she, you know, she's can't get out of bed and she can't eat with us and she can't balance and she can't regulate her heart rate and she can't regulate her temperature and all these things.
- 51:51SPEAKER_00: And I was up here, and I it became very clear to me very quickly that you can't, we cannot, our our internal state cannot be reflective of what's going on in our lives because some of our situations go on for a long time, and so we have to find a way to be relaxed amidst our trials, to feel the pain and let it come in and then work with it and let it go and know God's truth and let Him grow us through that.
- 52:25SPEAKER_00: So I would invite you tonight to think about.
- 52:28SPEAKER_00: I asked you in the beginning to think about one thing that is going well in your life.
- 52:34SPEAKER_00: And you need to hold that thing, right?
- 52:37SPEAKER_00: What are the things that we're grateful for?
- 52:39SPEAKER_00: We need to hang out in those memory networks, okay?
- 52:43SPEAKER_00: The more we focus our attention on what's going well and what we like and what we're thankful for, notice your body.
- 52:50SPEAKER_00: Just do that for a minute.
- 52:51SPEAKER_00: Think about something you're thankful for, something you like, something that brings you joy.
- 52:56SPEAKER_00: Think about it.
- 52:59SPEAKER_00: Pull your shoulders back while you think about it.
- 53:01SPEAKER_00: Relax your body, notice what happens, and stay there for a little bit.
- 53:06SPEAKER_00: It's not going to, you know, it's not going to mean that you're not working on your problem.
- 53:11SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 53:12SPEAKER_00: Stay positive.
- 53:15SPEAKER_00: Focus on that stuff and then deal with the hard stuff.
- 53:18SPEAKER_00: So focus on the good stuff more, keep your mind there, and then challenge yourself.
- 53:23SPEAKER_00: And what's one thing that I'd like to change a little bit?
- 53:27SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's a situation in my life that has me down.
- 53:30SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's an insecurity that I have.
- 53:33SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's something I want to do, but I'm held back by something.
- 53:37SPEAKER_00: Maybe I'd like to be more generous.
- 53:38SPEAKER_00: Maybe I'd like to step out a little bit and be more compassionate.
- 53:42SPEAKER_00: Think about one thing that you would like, because we should always be growing.
- 53:46SPEAKER_00: We shouldn't just grow when we're in a trial and we have to, but sometimes that's how it happens.
- 53:50SPEAKER_00: I know, like I said, practice what you preached this last year.
- 53:53SPEAKER_00: I'm like, okay, I've really got to do this stuff.
- 53:55SPEAKER_00: Like it works.
- 53:56SPEAKER_00: I know it works for other people.
- 53:57SPEAKER_00: I have to do it for me.
- 53:59SPEAKER_00: And if we do it, it works, but we can't only grow when something hard is going on.
- 54:06SPEAKER_00: We should be always growing because God wants us to reflect his glory and he wants us to be.
- 54:12SPEAKER_00: You know, he wants people to look at us and go, yeah, you know, I I wanna I wanna feel some of what she's feeling, right?
- 54:20SPEAKER_00: Not out of imitation, but just because we're reflecting God's peace.
- 54:26SPEAKER_00: So I'd challenge you to think about one thing you like, but then think about something that you'd like to change and go through this process.
- 54:33SPEAKER_00: And the reason I'm suggesting one thing, there's a wonderful resource resource out there, her name's um Dr.
- 54:38SPEAKER_00: Caroline Leaf.
- 54:39SPEAKER_00: And when I would drive these um trips to Omaha, I would say, I'm gonna listen to something positive.
- 54:45SPEAKER_00: That's another thing.
- 54:46SPEAKER_00: Like I don't listen to anything that's not positive.
- 54:47SPEAKER_00: If it's not K-Love, if it's not a sermon, if it's not a Tony Robbins type motivational, I just don't listen to it.
- 54:55SPEAKER_00: We're we have we feed our mind, we know our thoughts go with what we nourish it with.
- 55:00SPEAKER_00: But Dr.
- 55:01SPEAKER_00: Caroline Leaf, she talks about she's a neuroscientist, she talks a lot about the brain, and she has a lot of strategies for changing your brain, but you know, she suggests this process of I I haven't read the whole thing, but it's like, you know, basically do one thing at a time.
- 55:15SPEAKER_00: Don't say I'm gonna change everything about myself.
- 55:17SPEAKER_00: Just pick one thing, you know, one insecurity, one problem, and just kind of unpack it a little bit.
- 55:24SPEAKER_00: You know, sit with it, give yourself some time to be still, write it down.
- 55:29SPEAKER_00: Say, you know, I'd like to change this thing or my thinking about this, and then go through this process, think about it, and get your body calm enough to think about it and notice what's coming up.
- 55:41SPEAKER_00: Okay, it's not what happens to us, it's not that person at work you can't stand, it's that person at work that you can't stand because when you're with them, there's something coming up that you don't like to feel in yourself.
- 55:54SPEAKER_00: So be still.
- 55:56SPEAKER_00: Notice what's coming up, notice what you're feeling.
- 55:59SPEAKER_00: Label the emotions.
- 56:02SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 56:02SPEAKER_00: Are you mad?
- 56:03SPEAKER_00: Are you really mad?
- 56:04SPEAKER_00: Are you sad?
- 56:06SPEAKER_00: Or are you afraid?
- 56:08SPEAKER_00: Are you hopeless?
- 56:11SPEAKER_00: Are you encouraged?
- 56:13SPEAKER_00: Doesn't always have to be a bad emotion.
- 56:15SPEAKER_00: We gotta feel the good emotions too.
- 56:16SPEAKER_00: There's also research that says only 20% can lean into feeling good.
- 56:21SPEAKER_00: Bernie Brown talks about this, right?
- 56:23SPEAKER_00: 20% can feel joy.
- 56:24SPEAKER_00: Other times we start feel joy and we go, this is too good to be true.
- 56:28SPEAKER_00: It's probably, you know, I right?
- 56:31SPEAKER_00: We think we think something's gonna happen to take it away.
- 56:35SPEAKER_00: You know what makes us be able to lean into our joy is one factor, gratitude.
- 56:43SPEAKER_00: If we're grateful, and we just say, I'm grateful, I'm grateful for this, I'm grateful for that, I'm grateful, it's gonna be the worst situation ever.
- 56:50SPEAKER_00: So I'm grateful for what you're teaching me in this.
- 56:52SPEAKER_00: I'm grateful that I'm still alive.
- 56:55SPEAKER_00: I'm grateful, Lord, that you have a promise that says I don't have to live through this forever.
- 57:01SPEAKER_00: There's always something to be grateful for, and if we're grateful, we can lean into joy.
- 57:05SPEAKER_00: So feel the feelings coming up, identify the thoughts, and then you gotta go, where did that thought come from?
- 57:12SPEAKER_00: Am I really unworthy, or did I just have some people that didn't treat me very well when I was young?
- 57:19SPEAKER_00: Am I really not good enough?
- 57:24SPEAKER_00: Or do I just have this comparison thing going on in my mind where I think everybody else is better?
- 57:31SPEAKER_00: Is it really not okay to have my feelings?
- 57:35SPEAKER_00: Or were feelings just off limits where I grew up?
- 57:41SPEAKER_00: Am I really not safe?
- 57:43SPEAKER_00: Or did I just have a lot of important people betray me and now I don't trust anybody?
- 57:50SPEAKER_00: So when we notice what's coming up and we get really like, what is that?
- 57:57SPEAKER_00: Where did I learn it?
- 57:58SPEAKER_00: Then we have to say, and do I agree with it?
- 58:00SPEAKER_00: And more importantly, does God agree with it?
- 58:03SPEAKER_00: Another thing I'll say all the time when people are telling me they're this, you know, not good enough, it's my fault.
- 58:10SPEAKER_00: I I you know, I'm I'm not pretty enough, I'm not smart enough, I'm not strong enough, I can't handle it.
- 58:17SPEAKER_00: Say, is that what you would say to a friend?
- 58:19SPEAKER_00: Is that what you would say to your daughter?
- 58:21SPEAKER_00: You're never gonna make it through this.
- 58:23SPEAKER_00: You may as well just give up, right?
- 58:26SPEAKER_00: Most of the things that we say to ourselves, those thoughts running around, we would never speak to somebody else.
- 58:32SPEAKER_00: So we need to hold those captive because they're just as damaging to our spirit as they would be to someone else's.
- 58:40SPEAKER_00: So what's coming up, what we feel and think, and then we got to go to what we know.
- 58:46SPEAKER_00: And what we know doesn't always feel true.
- 58:49SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 58:50SPEAKER_00: We know, and we have to say, I know that I know that I know that I know it.
- 58:54SPEAKER_00: Even if I don't feel it right now.
- 58:56SPEAKER_00: I believe it because you said it, and that's the that's it.
- 59:00SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 59:02SPEAKER_00: I don't know where this came from, but like I grew up Methodist and we did the Apostles' Creed.
- 59:06SPEAKER_00: Has anybody ever done the Apostles' Creed?
- 59:08SPEAKER_00: I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of Heaven and Earth, and his only son, our Lord.
- 59:12SPEAKER_00: That one goes on and on and on, you know.
- 59:14SPEAKER_00: I would just recite that to myself again and again and again and again and again.
- 59:18SPEAKER_00: I haven't said it for 20 years, but I would just say it over and over and over and over again in the car by myself because that is what I know.
- 59:26SPEAKER_00: That's the only certain thing I know.
- 59:29SPEAKER_00: And that thought brings comfort because when we align our mind with the mind of the one who created us, we have peace, even if our world is crazy.
- 59:41SPEAKER_00: So go home or stay here tonight.
- 59:43SPEAKER_00: Connie's gonna sing a song.
- 59:46SPEAKER_00: And then I, you know, you can either oh, you're not gonna sing a song.
- 59:50SPEAKER_00: We're gonna play a song.
- 59:51SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry I put her on the spot.
- 59:54SPEAKER_00: I wanted Connie to sing a song.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_00: Connie's going to play a song.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_00: We are going to sing a song.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_00: And then, you know, maybe you don't want to do it here, but there's time we've allowed.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_00: Because this thought, these memory structures, I didn't say everything I wanted to say tonight about the mind because there's so much, but these memory structures, if we don't pay attention to them, like it, the proteins that hold them together, they fall away.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_00: So you might be thinking of something right here tonight that you think, you know, maybe I could think about this differently, maybe I could do that differently, maybe I could feel this a little bit differently.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_00: And if you don't act on it within 48 hours, it will be gone.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_00: So I would encourage you tonight, there's a there's paper, there's a table, and when we speak it, we get it up here.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_00: When we take what's down here and we get it up here into language, it becomes real, it becomes malleable.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_00: Move those thoughts from the subconscious up here, and then we can change them.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_00: So you can write something down and then just think about that thought every day, and every, and then you'll get to hear that thought.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_00: If you're saying, I can't handle it, or this is too hard, or I'm not good enough, you'll start to recognize that thought every time it comes to your brain, and every time it comes to your brain, you can demolish it.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_00: Every time it comes to your brain, you can take it, take it captive and make it obedient.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_00: So write something down.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_00: There's there's tables, you can talk among yourselves, you can share something.
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_00: If you have questions, I'm happy to answer them.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_00: Thank you for listening tonight, and I hope that there's something tonight that you can take home and use.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_00: And God bless you.
